such as lead to controversy rather than 
to a true stewardship         for ,god1 
which only exists where there is faith4

secured by exhortation is the love

although they         do not understand 
either their own words or what the      
things         are about which they make

,now we know that the ,law is good1 if a
 man uses it in the way         it      
should be used1  #jja3jji and remembers 
that a law is not enacted to control a  
righteous man1         but for the      
lawless and rebellious1 the irreligious 
and sinful1         the godless and     
profane--for those who strike their     
fathers         or their mothers1 for   
murderers1  #jja3jaj fornicators1       
sodomites1 slave-dealers1 liars and     
false witnesses2         and for        
whatever else is opposed to wholesome   
teaching  #jja3jaa and is not in        
accordance with the ,good ,news of the  
blessed         ,god with which ,i have 

been entrusted4  #jja3jab ,i am thankful
 to ,him who made me strong--even       
,christ ,jesus         our              
,lord--because ,he has judged me to be  
faithful and has         put me into    
,his service1  #jja3jac though ,i was   
previously a blasphemer and a persecutor
         and had been insolent in       
outrage4  ,yet mercy was shown me1      
because ,i had acted ignorantly1 not    
having as yet believed2  #jja3jad and   
the grace of our ,lord came to me in    
overflowing fulness1         conferring 
faith on me and the love which is in

testified to at its own appointed time1

appointed a herald and an ,apostle 7,i

not a fiction71 a teacher of         the

 ,so then ,i would have the men         
everywhere pray1 lifting to ,god        
holy hands which are unstained with     
anger or strife2  #jjb3jji and ,i would 
have the women dress becomingly1 with   
modesty         and self-control1 not   
with plaited hair or gold or pearls     

or costly clothes1  #jjb3jaj but--as    
befits women making a claim to          
godliness--         with the ornament of
 good works4  #jjb3jaa ,a woman should  
quietly learn from others with entire   
submissiveness4  #jjb3jab ,i do not     
permit a woman to teach1 nor have       
authority over a man1         but she   
must remain silent4  #jjb3jac ,for ,adam
 was formed first1 and then ,eve2       
#jjb3jad and ,adam was not deceived1 but
 his wife was thoroughly deceived1      
and so became involved in transgression4
  #jjb3jae ,yet a woman will be brought 
safely through childbirth         if she
 and her husband continue to live in    
faith and love         and growing      
holiness1 with habitual self-restraint4 
#jjc3jja ,faithful is the saying1 ,if   
any one is eager to have the oversight  
of a ,church1 he desires a noble work4  
#jjc3jjb ,a minister then must be a man 
of irreproachable character1            
true to his one wife1 temperate1        
sober-minded1 well-behaved1             

hospitable to strangers1 and with a gift
 for teaching2  #jjc3jjc not a hard     
drinker nor given to blows2 not selfish 
or         quarrelsome or covetous2     
#jjc3jjd but ruling his own household   
wisely and well1 with children          
kept under control with true dignity4   
#jjc3jje 7,if a man does not know how to
 rule his own household1         how    
shall he have the ,church of ,god given 
into his care87  #jjc3jjf ,he ought not 
to be a new convert1 for fear he should 
be blinded         with pride and come  
under the same condemnation as the      
,devil4  #jjc3jjg ,it is needful also   
that he bear a good character with      
people         outside the ,church1 lest
 he fall into reproach or a snare       
of the ,devil4  #jjc3jjh ,deacons1 in   
the same way1 must be men of serious    
demeanour1         not double-tongued1  
nor addicted to much wine1 nor greedy   
of base gain1  #jjc3jji but holding the 
secret truths of the faith with a clear 
conscience4  #jjc3jaj ,and they must    

also be well-tried men1 and when found  
to be         of unblemished character  
then let them serve as deacons4         
#jjc3jaa ,deaconesses1 in the same way1 
must be sober-minded women1         not 
slanderers1 but in every way temperate  
and trustworthy4  #jjc3jab ,a deacon    
must be true to his one wife1 and rule  
his children         and his own        
household wisely and well4  #jjc3jac    
,for those who have filled the deacon's 
office wisely and well1         are     
already gaining for themselves an       
honourable standing1         and are    
acquiring great freedom of speech in    
proclaiming         the faith which     
rests on ,christ ,jesus4  #jjc3jad ,all 
this ,i write to you1 though ,i am      
hoping before long to come         to   
see you4  #jjc3jae ,but1 for fear ,i may
 be hindered1 ,i now write1 so that you 
may have rules to guide you in dealing  
with ,god's household4         ,for this
 is what the ,church of the ever-living 
,god is1         and it is the pillar   

and foundation-stone of the truth4      
#jjc3jaf ,and1 beyond controversy1 great
 is the mystery of our religion--       
that ,christ appeared in human form1 and
 ,his claims justified         by the   
,spirit1 was seen by angels and         
proclaimed among         ,gentile       
nations1 was believed on in the world1  
and received         up again into      
glory4  #jjd3jja ,now the ,spirit       
expressly declares that in later times  
some will         fall away from the    
faith1 giving heed to deceiving spirits 
and the teachings of demons2  #jjd3jjb  
through the hypocrisy of men who teach  
falsely and have their         own      
consciences seared as with a hot iron2  
#jjd3jjc forbidding people to marry1 and
 insisting on abstinence from foods     
which ,god has created to be partaken   
of1 with thankfulness1         by those 
who believe and have a clear knowledge  
of the truth4  #jjd3jjd ,for everything 
that ,god has created is good1 and      
nothing is         to be cast aside1 if 

only it is received with thanksgiving4  
#jjd3jje ,for it is made holy by the    
word of ,god and by prayer4  #jjd3jjf   
,if you warn the brethren of these      
dangers you will be a good and          
faithful servant of ,christ ,jesus1     
inwardly feeding on the lessons         
of the faith and of the sound teaching  
of which you have been1         and are1
 so close a follower4  #jjd3jjg ,but    
worldly stories1 fit only for credulous 
old women1         have nothing to do   
with4  #jjd3jjh ,train yourself in      
godliness4  ,exercise for the body is   
not useless1         but godliness is   
useful in every respect1 possessing1 as 
it does1         the promise of ,life   
now and of the ,life which is soon      
coming4  #jjd3jji ,faithful is this     
saying and deserving of universal       
acceptance3  #jjd3jaj and here is the   
motive of our toiling and wrestling1    
because we have our hopes fixed on the  
ever-living ,god1         who is the    
,saviour of all mankind1 and especially 

of believers4  #jjd3jaa ,command this   
and teach this4  #jjd3jab ,let no one   
think slightingly of you because you are
 a young man2         but in speech1    
conduct1 love1 faith and purity1 be an  
example         for your fellow         
,christians to imitate4  #jjd3jac ,till 
,i come1 bestow your attention on       
reading1         exhortation and        
teaching4  #jjd3jad ,do not be careless 
about the gifts with which you are      
endowed1         which were conferred on
 you through a divine revelation        
when the hands of the elders were placed
 upon you4  #jjd3jae ,habitually        
practise these duties1 and be absorbed  
in them2         so that your growing   
proficiency in them may be evident to   
all4  #jjd3jaf ,be on your guard as to  
yourself and your teaching4             
,persevere in these things2 for by doing
 this you will make         certain your
 own salvation and that of your hearers4
  #jje3jja ,never administer a sharp    
reprimand to a man older than yourself2 

but entreat him as if he were your      
father1 and the younger         men as  
brothers2  #jje3jjb the elder women too 
as mothers1 and the younger women as    
sisters1         with perfect modesty4  
#jje3jjc ,honour widows who are really  
in need4  #jje3jjd ,but if a widow has  
children or grandchildren1 let these    
learn         first to show piety       
towards their own homes and to prove    
their gratitude to their parents2 for   
this is well pleasing         in the    
sight of ,god4  #jje3jje ,a widow who is
 really in need1 friendless and         
desolate1         has her hopes fixed on
 ,god1 and continues at her             
supplications         and prayers1 night
 and day2  #jje3jjf but a               
pleasure-loving widow is dead even while
 still alive4  #jje3jjg ,press these    
facts upon them1 so that they may live  
lives         free from reproach4       
#jje3jjh ,but if a man makes no         
provision for those dependent on him1   
and especially for his own family1 he   

has disowned the faith         and is   
behaving worse than an unbeliever4      
#jje3jji ,no widow is to be put on the  
roll who is under sixty years of age4   
#jje3jaj ,she must have been true to her
 one husband1 and well         reported 
of for good deeds1 as having brought up 
children1         received strangers    
hospitably1 washed the feet of ,god's   
people1         given relief to the     
distressed1 and devoted herself to good 
works of every kind4  #jje3jaa ,but the 
younger widows you must not enrol2 for  
as soon as they         begin to chafe  
against the yoke of ,christ1 they want  
to marry1  #jje3jab and they incur      
disapproval for having broken their     
original vow4  #jje3jac ,and at the same
 time they also learn to be idle as they
 go         round from house to house2  
and they are not only idle1         but 
are gossips also and busybodies1        
speaking of things         that ought   
not to be spoken of4  #jje3jad ,i would 
therefore have the younger women marry1 

bear children1         rule in domestic 
matters1 and furnish the ,adversary with
 no         excuse for slander4         
#jje3jae ,for already some of them have 
gone astray1 following ,satan4  #jje3jaf
 ,if a believing woman has widows       
dependent on her1 she should            
relieve their wants1 and save the       
,church from being burdened--         so
 that the ,church may relieve the widows
 who are really in need4  #jje3jag ,let 
the ,elders who perform their duties    
wisely and well be         held worthy  
of double honour1 especially those who  
labour         in preaching and         
teaching4  #jje3jah ,for the ,scripture 
says1 ,you are not to muzzle the ox     
while it         is treading out the    
grain2 and the workman deserves his pay4
  #jje3jai ,never entertain an          
accusation against an ,elder except on  
the evidence of two of three witnesses4 
#jje3jbj ,those who persist in sin      
reprove in the presence of all1         
so that it may also be a warning to the 

rest4  #jje3jba ,i solemnly call upon   
you1 in the presence of ,god and of     
,christ ,jesus         and of the elect 
angels1 to carry out these instructions 
of mine without prejudice1 and to do    
nothing from partiality4  #jje3jbb ,do  
not ordain any one hastily2 and do not  
be a partaker         in the sins of    
others2 keep 99yourself99 pure4         
#jje3jbc 7,no longer be a water-drinker2
 but take a little wine for the sake    
of your digestion and your frequent     
ailments47  #jje3jbd ,the sins of some  
men are evident to the world1 leading   
the way         to your estimate of     
their characters1 but the sins of       
others lag behind4  #jje3jbe ,so also   
the right actions of some are evident to
 the world1         and those that are  
not cannot remain for ever out of sight4
  #jjf3jja ,let all who are under the   
yoke of slavery hold their own          
masters to be deserving of honour1 so   
that the name of ,god         and the   
,christian teaching may not be spoken   

against4  #jjf3jjb ,and those who have  
believing masters should not be wanting 
in respect towards them because they are
 their brethren1         but should     
serve them all the more willingly       
because those         who profit by the 
faithful service rendered are believers 
and are friends4  #jjf3jjc ,so teach and
 exhort4  ,if any one is a teacher of   
any other kind         of doctrine1 and 
refuses assent to wholesome             
instructions--         those of our     
,lord ,jesus ,christ--and the teaching  
that harmonizes         with true       
godliness1  #jjf3jjd he is puffed up    
with pride and has no true knowledge1   
but is         crazy over discussions   
and controversies about words which give
         rise to envy1 quarrelling1     
revilings1 ill-natured suspicions1      
#jjf3jje and persistent wranglings on   
the part of people whose intellects     
are disordered and they themselves      
blinded to all knowledge         of the 
truth2 who imagine that godliness means 

gain4  #jjf3jjf ,and godliness 99is99   
gain1 when associated with contentment2 
#jjf3jjg for we brought nothing into the
 world1 nor can we carry anything       
out of it2  #jjf3jjh and if we have food
 and clothing1 with these we will be    
satisfied4  #jjf3jji ,but people who are
 determined to be rich fall into        
temptation         and a snare1 and into
 many unwise and pernicious ways which  
sink         mankind in destruction and 
ruin4  #jjf3jaj ,for from love of money 
all sorts of evils arise2 and some have 
so hankered after money as to be led    
astray from the faith         and be    
pierced through with countless sorrows4 
#jjf3jaa ,but you1 ,o man of ,god1 must 
flee from these things2 and strive      
for uprightness1 godliness1 good faith1 
love1 fortitude1         and a forgiving
 temper4  #jjf3jab ,exert all your      
strength in the honourable struggle for 
the faith2         lay hold of the ,life
 of the ,ages1 to which you were called1
         when you made your noble       

profession of faith before many         
witnesses4  #jjf3jac ,i charge you--as  
in the presence of ,god who gives life  
to all creatures1 and of ,christ ,jesus 
who at the bar of         ,pontius      
,pilate made a noble profession of      
faith--  #jjf3jad that you keep ,god's  
commandments stainlessly and without    
reproach till the ,appearing of our     
,lord ,jesus ,christ4  #jjf3jae ,for1 as
 its appointed time1 this will be       
brought about by the blessed         and
 only ,sovereign1 the ,king of kings and
 ,lord of lords1  #jjf3jaf who alone    
possesses immortality1 dwelling in      
unapproachable light1         and whom  
no man has seen or can see4  ,to ,him be
 eternal honour         and power6

are rich in the present age that they   
must not be haughty nor set their hopes 
on riches--         that unstable       
foundation--but on ,god who provides us

storing up for themselves that which    
shall be a solid         foundation for 
the future1 that they may lay hold of

irreligious and frivolous talk1 and     
controversy with what is         falsely
