had received the ,message amid severe   
persecution1         and yet with the   
joy which the ,holy ,spirit gives1

 all the believers throughout

it was not only from you that the       
,master's ,message sounded         forth
 throughout ,macedonia and ,greece2 but 
everywhere your         faith in ,god   
has become known1 so that it is         
unnecessary         for us to say       
anything about it4  #jja3jji ,for when  
others speak of us they report the      
reception we         had from you1 and  
how you turned from your idols to ,god1 
to be bondservants of the true and      
ever-living ,god1  #jja3jaj and to await
 the return from ,heaven of ,his ,son1  
whom ,he         raised from among the  
dead--even ,jesus1 our ,deliverer from  

,god's coming anger4  #jjb3jja ,for you 
yourselves1 brethren1 know that our     
visit to you did         not fail of its
 purpose4  #jjb3jjb ,but1 as you will   
remember1 after we had already met with 
suffering         and outrage at        
,philippi1 we summoned up boldness1 by  
the help         of our ,god1 to tell   
you ,god's ,good ,news amid much        
opposition4  #jjb3jjc ,for our preaching
 was not grounded on a delusion1 nor    
prompted         by mingled motives1 nor
 was there fraud in it4  #jjb3jjd ,but  
as ,god tested and approved us before   
entrusting us with         ,his ,good   
,news1 so in what we say we are seeking 
not to please         men but to please 
,god1 who tests and approves our        
motives4  #jjb3jje ,for1 as you are well
 aware1 we have never used the language 
of flattery nor have we found pretexts  
for enriching ourselves--         ,god  
is our witness2  #jjb3jjf nor did we    
seek glory either from you or from any  
other mere men1         although we     

might have stood on our dignity as      
,christ's ,apostles4  #jjb3jjg ,on the  
contrary1 in our relations to you we    
showed ourselves as         gentle as a 
mother is when she tenderly nurses her  
own children4  #jjb3jjh ,seeing that we 
were thus drawn affectionately towards  
you1         it would have been a joy to
 us to have imparted to you not         
only ,god's ,good ,news1 but to have    
given our very lives also1              
because you had become very dear to us4 
#jjb3jji ,for you remember1 brethren1   
our labour and toil3  how1 working night
         and day so as not to become a  
burden to any one of you1         we    
came and proclaimed among you ,god's    
,good ,news4  #jjb3jaj ,you yourselves  
are witnesses--and ,god is witness--how 
holy         and upright and blameless  
our dealings with you believers were4   
#jjb3jaa ,for you know that we acted    
towards every one of you as a father    
does towards his own children1          
encouraging and cheering you1  #jjb3jab 

and imploring you to live lives worthy  
of fellowship with ,god         who is  
inviting you to share ,his own ,kingship
 and glory4  #jjb3jac ,and for this     
further reason we render unceasing      
thanks to ,god1         that when you   
received ,god's ,message from our lips1 
it was         as no mere message from  
men that you embraced it1 but as--      
what it really is--,god's ,message1     
which also does its work         in the 
hearts of you who believe4  #jjb3jad    
,for you1 brethren1 followed the example
 of the ,churches of ,god         in    
,christ ,jesus which are in ,judaea2    
seeing that you endured         the same
 ill-treatment at the hands of your     
countrymen1         as they did at the  
hands of the ,jews4  #jjb3jae ,those    
,jewish persecutors killed both the     
,lord ,jesus and the ,prophets1         
and drove us out of their midst4  ,they 
are displeasing to ,god1         and are
 the enemies of all mankind2  #jjb3jaf  
for they still try to prevent our       

preaching to the ,gentiles         so   
that they may find salvation4  ,they    
thus continually fill         up the    
measure of their own sins1 and ,god's   
anger in its         severest form has  
overtaken them4  #jjb3jag ,but we1      
brethren1 having been for a short time  
separated         from you in bodily    
presence1 though not in heart1          
endeavoured all the more earnestly1 with
 intense longing1         to see you    
face to face4  #jjb3jah ,on this account
 we wanted to come to you--at least ,i  
,paul         wanted again and again to 
do so--but ,satan hindered us4  #jjb3jai
 ,for what is our hope or joy1 or the   
crown of which we boast8         ,is it 
not you yourselves in the presence of   
our ,lord ,jesus         at ,his        
,coming8  #jjb3jbj ,yes1 you are our    
glory and our joy4  #jjc3jja ,so when we
 could endure it no longer1 we decided  
to remain         behind in ,athens     
alone2  #jjc3jjb and sent ,timothy our  
brother and ,god's minister in the      

service         of ,christ's ,good      
,news1 that he might help you           
spiritually         and encourage you in
 your faith2  #jjc3jjc that none of you 
might be unnerved by your present       
trials3         for you yourselves know 
that they are our appointed lot4        
#jjc3jjd ,for even when we were with    
you1 we forewarned you1 saying1         
,we are soon to suffer affliction2 and  
this actually happened1         as you  
well know4  #jjc3jje ,for this reason ,i
 also1 when ,i could no longer endure   
the uncertainty1 sent to know the       
condition of your faith1         lest   
perchance the ,tempter might have       
tempted you and our         labour have 
been lost4  #jjc3jjf ,but now that      
,timothy has recently come back to us   
from you1         and has brought us the
 happy tidings of your faith and love1  
and has told us how you still cherish a 
constant and affectionate               
recollection of us1 and are longing to  
see us as we also long         to see   

you--  #jjc3jjg for this reason in our  
distress and trouble we have been       
comforted about you1 brethren1 by your  
faith4  #jjc3jjh ,for now life is for us
 life indeed1 since you are standing    
fast in the ,lord4  #jjc3jji ,for what  
thanksgiving on your behalf can we      
possibly offer         to ,god in return
 for all the joy which fills our souls  
before         our ,god for you1        
#jjc3jaj while night and day1 with      
intense earnestness1 we pray that we    
may see your faces1 and may bring to    
perfection whatever         may be still
 lacking in your faith8  #jjc3jaa ,but  
may our ,god and ,father ,himself--and  
our ,lord ,jesus--         guide us on

you1 may the ,lord teach you to love one

commands which we laid upon you by the  
authority         of the ,lord ,jesus4

purity of life1 that you         abstain

man among you shall know how to procure 
a wife         who shall be his own in  
purity and honour2  #jjd3jje that you be
 not overmastered by lustful cravings1  
like the ,gentiles         who have no  
knowledge of ,god2  #jjd3jjf and that in
 this matter there be no encroaching on 
the         rights of a brother         
,christian and no overreaching him4     
,for the ,lord is an avenger in all such
 cases1 as we have         already      

taught you and solemnly warned you4     
#jjd3jjg ,god has not called us to an   
unclean life1 but to one of purity4     
#jjd3jjh ,therefore a defiant spirit in 
such a case provokes not man         but
 ,god1 who puts ,his ,holy ,spirit into 
your hearts4  #jjd3jji ,but on the      
subject of love for the brotherhood it  
is unnecessary         for me to write  
to you1 for you yourselves have been    
taught         by ,god to love one      
another2  #jjd3jaj and indeed you do    
love all the brethren throughout        
,macedonia4         ,and we exhort you  
to do so more and more1  #jjd3jaa and to
 vie with one another in eagerness for  
peace1         every one minding his own
 business and working with his hands1   
as we ordered you to do3  #jjd3jab so as
 to live worthy lives in relation to    
outsiders1 and not         be a burden  
to any one4  #jjd3jac ,now1 concerning  
those who from time to time pass away1  
we would not have you to be ignorant1   
brethren1 lest you         should mourn 

as others do who have no hope4  #jjd3jad
 ,for if we believe that ,jesus has died
 and risen again1         we also       
believe that1 through ,jesus1 ,god will 
bring with ,him         those who shall 
have passed away4  #jjd3jae ,for this we
 declare to you on the ,lord's own      
authority--         that we who are     
alive and continue on earth until the   
,coming         of the ,lord1 shall     
certainly not forestall those who shall 
have previously passed away4  #jjd3jaf  
,for the ,lord ,himself will come down  
from ,heaven with a loud word         of
 command1 and with an archangel's voice 
and the trumpet of ,god1         and the
 dead in ,christ will rise first4       
#jjd3jag ,afterwards we who are alive   
and are still on earth will be caught   
up in their company amid clouds to meet 
the ,lord in the air4  #jjd3jah ,and so 
we shall be with the ,lord for ever4    
,therefore encourage         one another
 with these words4  #jje3jja ,but as to 
times and dates it is unnecessary that  

anything         be written to you4     
#jje3jjb ,for you yourselves know       
perfectly well that the day of the ,lord
         comes like a thief in the      
night4  #jje3jjc ,while they are saying 
,peace and safety6 then in a moment     
destruction falls upon them1 like       
birth-pains on a woman         who is   
with child2 and escape there is none4   
#jje3jjd ,but you1 brethren1 are not in 
darkness1 that daylight should          
surprise you like a thief2  #jje3jje for
 all of you are sons of ,light and sons 
of the day4         ,we belong neither  
to the night nor to darkness4  #jje3jjf 
,so then let us not sleep1 like the rest
 of the world1 but let         us keep  
awake and be sober4  #jje3jjg ,for those
 who sleep1 sleep at night1 and those   
who drink freely1         drink at      
night4  #jje3jjh ,but let us1           
belonging--as we do--to the day1 be     
sober1         putting on the           
breastplate of faith and love1 and for a
 helmet         the hope of salvation4  

#jje3jji ,for ,god has not pre-destined 
us to meet ,his anger1 but to obtain    
salvation through our ,lord ,jesus      
,christ2  #jje3jaj who died on our      
behalf1 so that whether we are awake or 
are         sleeping we may share ,his  
,life4  #jje3jaa ,therefore encourage   
one another1 and let each one help      
to strengthen his friend1 as in fact you
 do4  #jje3jab ,now we beg you1         
brethren1 to show respect for those who 
labour among you and are your leaders in
 ,christian work1         and are your  
advisers2  #jje3jac and to esteem them  
very highly in love for their work's    
sake4         ,be at peace among        
yourselves4  #jje3jad ,and we exhort    
you1 brethren1 admonish the unruly1     
comfort the timid1         sustain the  
weak1 and be patient towards all4       
#jje3jae ,see to it that no one ever    
repays another with evil for evil2      
but always seek opportunities of doing  
good both to one         another and to 
all the world4  #jje3jaf ,be always     

joyful4  #jje3jag ,be unceasing in      
prayer4  #jje3jah ,in every circumstance
 of life be thankful2 for this is ,god's
         will in ,christ ,jesus         
respecting you4  #jje3jai ,do not quench
 the ,spirit4  #jje3jbj ,do not think   
meanly of utterances of prophecy2       
#jje3jba but test all such1 and retain  
hold of the good4  #jje3jbb ,hold       
yourselves aloof from every form of     
evil4  #jje3jbc ,and may ,god ,himself  
who gives peace1 make you entirely holy2
         and may your spirits1 souls and
 bodies be preserved complete           
and be found blameless at the ,coming of
 our ,lord ,jesus ,christ4  #jje3jbd    
,faithful is ,he who calls you1 and ,he 
will also perfect ,his work4  #jje3jbe  
,brethren1 pray for us4  #jje3jbf ,greet
 all the brethren with a holy kiss4     
#jje3jbg ,i solemnly charge you in the  
,lord's name to have this ,letter       
read to all the brethren4  #jje3jbh ,may
 the grace of our ,lord ,jesus ,christ  
be with you4
