 ,himself to suffer for our sins in     
order to rescue         us from the     
present wicked age in accordance with   
the will         of our ,god and

 to the ,ages of the ,ages6  ,amen4     
#jja3jjf ,i marvel that you are so      
readily leaving ,him who called you by  
the grace of ,christ1 and are adhering  
to a different ,good ,news4  #jja3jjg   
,for other ,good ,news there is none2   
but there are some         persons who  

are troubling you1 and are seeking to   
distort         the ,good ,news         
concerning ,christ4  #jja3jjh ,but if   
even we or an angel from ,heaven should 
bring you a         ,good ,news         
different from that which we have       
already brought you1         let him be 
accursed4  #jja3jji ,what ,i have just  
said ,i repeat--if any one is preaching 
to you         a ,good ,news other than 
that which you originally received1     
let him be accursed4  #jja3jaj ,for is  
it man's favour or ,god's that ,i aspire
 to8         ,or am ,i seeking to please
 men8  ,if ,i were still a man-pleaser1 
,i should not be ,christ's bondservant4 
#jja3jaa ,for ,i must tell you1         
brethren1 that the ,good ,news which was
         proclaimed by me is not such as
 man approves of4  #jja3jab ,for1 in    
fact1 it was not from man that ,i       
received or learnt it1         but by a 
revelation from ,jesus ,christ4         
#jja3jac ,for you have heard of my early
 career in ,judaism--how ,i furiously   

persecuted the ,church of ,god1 and made
 havoc of it2  #jja3jad and how in      
devotion to ,judaism ,i outstripped many
 men of my         own age among my     
people1 being far more zealous than they
         on behalf of the traditions of 
my forefathers4  #jja3jae ,but when ,he 
who set me apart even from my birth1 and
 called         me by ,his grace1       
#jja3jaf saw fit to reveal ,his ,son    
within me in order that ,i might tell   
among the ,gentiles the ,good ,news     
concerning ,him1 at once ,i         did 
not confer with any human being1        
#jja3jag nor did ,i go up to ,jerusalem 
to those who were my seniors         in 
the ,apostleship1 but ,i went away into 
,arabia1 and afterwards         came    
back to ,damascus4  #jja3jah ,then1     
three years later1 ,i went up to        
,jerusalem to inquire         for       
,peter1 and ,i spent a fortnight with   
him4  #jja3jai ,i saw none of the other 
,apostles1 except ,james1 the ,lord's   
brother4  #jja3jbj ,in making these     

assertions ,i am speaking the truth1    
as in the sight of ,god4  #jja3jba      
,afterwards ,i visited ,syria and       
,cilicia4  #jja3jbb ,but to the         
,christian ,churches in ,judaea ,i was  
personally unknown4  #jja3jbc ,they only
 heard it said1 ,he who was once our    
persecutor         is now telling the   
,good ,news of the faith of which he    
formerly made havoc4  #jja3jbd ,and they
 gave glory to ,god on my account4      
#jjb3jja ,later still1 after an interval
 of fourteen years1 ,i again            
went up to ,jerusalem in company with   
,barnabas1 taking ,titus         also   
with me4  #jjb3jjb ,i went up in        
obedience to a revelation of ,god's     
will2         and ,i explained to them  
the ,good ,news which ,i proclaim among 
the ,gentiles4  ,to the leaders of the  
,church this explanation         was    
made in private1 lest by any means ,i   
should be running1         or should    
already have run1 in vain4  #jjb3jjc    
,but although my companion ,titus was a 

,greek they did not insist         upon 
even his being circumcised4  #jjb3jjd   
,yet there was danger of this through   
the false brethren         secretly     
introduced into the ,church1 who had    
stolen in to spy         out the freedom
 which is ours in ,christ ,jesus1 in    
order to rob         us of it4  #jjb3jje
 ,but not for an hour did we give way   
and submit to them2         in order    
that the ,good ,news might continue with
 you         in its integrity4  #jjb3jjf
 ,from those leaders ,i gained nothing  
new4  ,whether they         were men of 
importance or not1 matters nothing to   
me--         ,god recognizes no external
 distinctions4  ,to me1 at any rate1    
the leaders imparted nothing new4       
#jjb3jjg ,indeed1 when they saw that ,i 
was entrusted with the preaching        
of the ,good ,news to the ,gentiles as  
,peter had been with that         to the
 ,jews--  #jjb3jjh for ,he who had been 
at work within ,peter with a view to his
         ,apostleship to the ,jews had  

also been at work within me         with
 a view to my ,apostleship to the       
,gentiles--  #jjb3jji and when they     
perceived the mission which was         
graciously         entrusted to me1 they
 7that is to say1 ,james1 ,peter1 and   
,john1         who were considered to be
 the pillars of the ,church7            
welcomed ,barnabas and me to their      
fellowship on the understanding         
that we were to go to the ,gentiles and 
they to the ,jews4  #jjb3jaj ,only they 
urged that we should remember their     
poor--a thing         which was         
uppermost in my own mind4  #jjb3jaa ,now
 when ,peter visited ,antioch1 ,i       
remonstrated with him to his face1      
because he had incurred just censure4   
#jjb3jab ,for until certain persons came
 from ,james he had been accustomed     
to eat with ,gentiles2 but as soon as   
these persons came1 he withdrew         
and separated himself for fear of the   
,circumcision party4  #jjb3jac ,and     
along with him the other ,jews also     

concealed their         real opinions1  
so that even ,barnabas was carried away 
by their         lack of                
straightforwardness4  #jjb3jad ,as soon 
as ,i saw that they were not walking    
uprightly in the spirit         of the  
,good ,news1 ,i said to ,peter1 before  
them all1 ,if you1         though you   
are a ,jew1 live as a ,gentile does1 and
 not as a ,jew1         how can you make
 the ,gentiles follow ,jewish customs8  
#jjb3jae ,you and ,i1 though we are     
,jews by birth and not ,gentile sinners1
  #jjb3jaf know that it is not through  
obedience to ,law that a man         can
 be declared free from guilt1 but only  
through faith         in ,jesus ,christ4
  ,we have therefore believed in ,christ
 ,jesus1         for the purpose of     
being declared free from guilt1         
through faith in ,christ and not through
 obedience to ,law4         ,for through
 obedience to ,law no human being shall 
be declared         free from guilt4    
#jjb3jag ,but if while we are seeking in

 ,christ acquittal from guilt we        
ourselves are convicted of sin1 ,christ 
then encourages us         to sin6  ,no1
 indeed4  #jjb3jah ,why1 if ,i am now   
rebuilding that structure of sin which  
,i         had demolished1 ,i am thereby
 constituting myself a transgressor2    
#jjb3jai for it is by the ,law that ,i  
have died to the ,law1 in order         
that ,i may live to ,god4  #jjb3jbj ,i  
have been crucified with ,christ1 and it
 is no longer ,i that live1         but 
,christ that lives in me2 and the life  
which ,i now live         in the body ,i
 live through faith in the ,son of ,god 
who loved         me and gave ,himself  
up to death on my behalf4  #jjb3jba ,i  
do not nullify the grace of ,god2 for if
 acquittal from guilt         is        
obtainable through the ,law1 then       
,christ has died in vain4  #jjc3jja ,you
 foolish ,galatians6  ,whose sophistry  
has bewitched you--         you to whom 
,jesus ,christ has been vividly         
portrayed as         on the ,cross8     

#jjc3jjb ,answer me this one question1  
,is it on the ground of your obedience  
to the ,law that you received the       
,spirit1 or is it because1         when 
you heard1 you believed8  #jjc3jjc ,are 
you so foolish8  ,having begun by the   
,spirit1 are you now         going to   
reach perfection through what is        
external8  #jjc3jjd ,have you endured   
such sufferings to no purpose--if indeed
 it         has been to no purpose8     
#jjc3jje ,he who gives you ,his ,spirit 
and works miracles among you--          
does ,he do so on the ground of your    
obedience to the ,law1         or is it 
the result of your having heard and     
believed3  #jjc3jjf even as ,abraham    
believed ,god1 and his faith was placed 
to his         account as righteousness8
  #jjc3jjg ,notice therefore that those 
who possess faith are true         sons 
of ,abraham4  #jjc3jjh ,and the         
,scripture1 foreseeing that in          
consequence of faith         ,god would 
declare the nations to be free from     

guilt1         sent beforehand the ,good
 ,news to ,abraham1 saying1 ,in you     
all the nations shall be blessed4       
#jjc3jji ,so we see that it is those who
 possess faith that are blessed         
with believing ,abraham4  #jjc3jaj ,all 
who are depending upon their own        
obedience to the ,law         are under 
a curse1 for it is written1 ,cursed is  
every one         who does not remain   
faithful to all the precepts of the     
,law1         and practise them4        
#jjc3jaa ,it is evident1 too1 that no   
one can find acceptance with ,god       
simply by obeying the ,law1 because the 
righteous shall         live by faith1  
#jjc3jab and the ,law has nothing to do 
with faith4  ,it teaches that he        
who does these things shall live by     
doing them4  #jjc3jac ,christ has       
purchased our freedom from the curse of 
the ,law         by becoming accursed   
for us--because ,cursed is every one    
who is hanged upon a tree4  #jjc3jad    
,our freedom has been thus purchased in 

order that in ,christ ,jesus         the
 blessing belonging to ,abraham may come
 upon the nations1         so that      
through faith we may receive the        
promised ,spirit4  #jjc3jae ,brethren1  
even a covenant made by a man--to borrow
 an illustration         from daily     
life--when once formally sanctioned is  
not liable         to be set aside or   
added to4  #jjc3jaf 7,now the promises  
were given to ,abraham and to his seed4 
,god did not say and to seeds1 as if    
speaking of many1         but and to    
your seed1 since ,he spoke of only one--
         and this is ,christ47  #jjc3jag
 ,i mean that the ,covenant which ,god  
had already formally made         is not
 abrogated by the ,law which was given  
four hundred         and thirty years   
later--so as to annul the promise4      
#jjc3jah ,for if the inheritance comes  
through obedience to ,law1 it no        
longer comes because of a promise4      
,but1 as a matter of fact1         ,god 
has granted it to ,abraham in fulfilment

 of a promise4  #jjc3jai ,why then was  
the ,law given8  ,it was imposed later  
on for the sake         of defining sin1
 until the seed should come to whom ,god
 had         made the promise2 and its  
details were laid down by a mediator    
with the help of angels4  #jjc3jbj ,but 
there cannot be a mediator where only   
one individual         is concerned4    
#jjc3jba ,god1 however1 is only one4    
,is the ,law then opposed to the        
promises         of ,god8  ,no1 indeed2 
for if a ,law had been given which could
         have conferred ,life1          
righteousness would certainly have come 
by the ,law4  #jjc3jbb ,but ,scripture  
has shown that all mankind are the      
prisoners of sin1         in order that 
the promised blessing1 which depends on 
faith         in ,jesus ,christ1 may be 
given to those who believe4  #jjc3jbc   
,before this faith came1 we ,jews were  
perpetual prisoners under         the   
,law1 living under restraints and       
limitations in preparation         for  

the faith which was soon to be revealed4
  #jjc3jbd ,so that the ,law has acted  
the part of a tutor-slave to lead       
us to ,christ1 in order that through    
faith we may be declared         to be  
free from guilt4  #jjc3jbe ,but now that
 this faith has come1 we are no longer  
under a tutor-slave4  #jjc3jbf ,you are 
all sons of ,god through faith in       
,christ ,jesus2  #jjc3jbg for all of you
 who have been baptized into ,christ1   
have clothed         yourselves with    
,christ4  #jjc3jbh ,in ,him the         
distinctions between ,jew and ,gentile1 
slave and free man1         male and    
female1 disappear2 you are all one in   
,christ ,jesus4  #jjc3jbi ,and if you   
belong to ,christ1 then you are indeed  
true descendants         of ,abraham1   
and are heirs in fulfilment of the      
promise4  #jjd3jja ,now ,i say that so  
long as an heir is a child1 he in no    
respect         differs from a slave1   
although he is the owner of everything1 
#jjd3jjb but he is under the control of 

guardians and trustees until         the
 time his father has appointed4         
#jjd3jjc ,so we also1 when spiritually  
we were children1 were subject          
to the world's rudimentary notions1 and 
were enslaved4  #jjd3jjd ,but1 when the 
time was fully come1 ,god sent forth    
,his ,son1         born of a woman1 born
 subject to ,law1  #jjd3jje in order to 
purchase the freedom of all who were    
subject to ,law1         so that we     
might receive recognition as sons4      
#jjd3jjf ,and because you are sons1 ,god
 has sent out the ,spirit of ,his ,son  
to enter your hearts and cry ,abba6 our 
,father6  #jjd3jjg ,therefore you are no
 longer a slave1 but a son2 and if a    
son1         then an heir also through  
,god's own act4  #jjd3jjh ,but at one   
time1 you ,gentiles1 having no knowledge
 of ,god1         were slaves to gods   
which in reality do not exist4  #jjd3jji
 ,now1 however1 having come to know     
,god--or rather to be known by ,him--   
how is it you are again turning back to 

weak and worthless         rudimentary  
notions to which you are once more      
willing         to be enslaved8         
#jjd3jaj ,you scrupulously observe days 
and months1 special seasons1 and years4 
#jjd3jaa ,i am alarmed about you1 and am
 afraid that ,i have perhaps            
bestowed labour upon you to no purpose4 
#jjd3jab ,brethren1 become as ,i am1 ,i 
beseech you2 for ,i have also become    
like you4  ,in no respect did you behave
 badly to me4  #jjd3jac ,and you know   
that in those early days it was on      
account         of bodily infirmity that
 ,i proclaimed the ,good ,news to you1  
#jjd3jad and yet the bodily infirmity   
which was such a trial to you1          
you did not regard with contempt or     
loathing1 but you received         me as
 if ,i had been an angel of ,god or     
,christ ,jesus ,himself6  #jjd3jae ,i   
ask you1 then1 what has become of your  
self-congratulations8         ,for ,i   
bear you witness that had it been       
possible you would         have torn out

 your own eyes and have given them to   
me4  #jjd3jaf ,can it be that ,i have   
become your enemy through speaking      
the truth to you8  #jjd3jag ,these men  
pay court to you1 but not with          
honourable motives4         ,they want  
to exclude you1 so that you may pay     
court to them4  #jjd3jah ,it is always  
an honourable thing to be courted in an 
honourable cause2         always1 and   
not only when ,i am with you1 my        
children--  #jjd3jai you for whom ,i am 
again1 as it were1 undergoing the pains 
of childbirth1 until ,christ is fully   
formed within you4  #jjd3jbj ,would that
 ,i were with you and could change my   
tone1 for ,i am         perplexed about 
you4  #jjd3jba ,tell me--you who want to
 continue to be subject to ,law--       
will you not listen to the ,law8        
#jjd3jbb ,for it is written that        
,abraham had two sons1 one by the       
slave-girl         and one by the free  
woman4  #jjd3jbc ,but we see that the   
child of the slave-girl was born in the 

common         course of nature2 but the
 child of the free woman in fulfilment  
of the promise4  #jjd3jbd ,all this is  
allegorical2 for the women represent two
 ,covenants4         ,one has its origin
 on ,mount ,sinai1 and bears children   
destined for slavery4  #jjd3jbe ,this is
 ,hagar2 for the name ,hagar stands for 
,mount ,sinai in ,arabia1         and   
corresponds to the present ,jerusalem1  
which is in bondage         together    
with her children4  #jjd3jbf ,but the   
,jerusalem which is above is free1 and  
99she99 is 99our99 mother4  #jjd3jbg    
,for it is written1 ,rejoice1 thou      
barren woman that bearest not1          
break forth into a joyful cry1 thou that
 dost not travail         with child4   
,for the desolate woman has many        
children--         more indeed than she 
who has the husband4  #jjd3jbh ,but you1
 brethren1 like ,isaac1 are children    
born in fulfilment         of a promise4
  #jjd3jbi ,yet just as1 at that time1  
the child born in the common course     

of nature persecuted the one whose birth
 was due to the power         of the    
,spirit1 so it is now4  #jjd3jcj ,but   
what says the ,scripture8  ,send away   
the slave-girl and her son1         for 
never shall the slave-girl's son share  
the inheritance         with the son of 
the free woman4  #jjd3jca ,therefore1   
brethren1 since we are not the children 
of a slave-girl1         but of the free
 woman--  #jje3jja ,christ having made  
us gloriously free--stand fast and do   
not         again be hampered with the  
yoke of slavery4  #jje3jjb ,remember    
that it is ,i ,paul who tell you that if
 you receive         circumcision       
,christ will avail you nothing4         
#jje3jjc ,i once more protest to every  
man who receives circumcision           
that he is under obligation to obey the 
whole ,law of ,moses4  #jje3jjd ,christ 
has become nothing to any of you who are
 seeking acceptance         with ,god   
through the ,law3  you have fallen away 
from grace4  #jje3jje 99,we99 have not1 

for through the ,spirit we wait with    
longing hope         for an acceptance  
with ,god which is to come through      
faith4  #jje3jjf ,for in ,christ ,jesus 
neither circumcision nor uncircumcision 
is of any importance2 but only faith    
working through love4  #jje3jjg ,you    
were running the race nobly6  ,who has  
interfered and caused         you to    
swerve from the truth8  #jje3jjh ,no    
such teaching ever proceeded from ,him  
who is calling you4  #jje3jji ,a little 
yeast corrupts the whole of the dough4  
#jje3jaj ,for my part ,i have strong    
confidence in you in the ,lord          
that you will adopt my view of the      
matter4  ,but the man--         be he   
who he may--who is troubling you1 will  
have to bear         the full weight of 
the judgement to be pronounced on him4  
#jje3jaa ,as for me1 brethren1 if ,i am 
still a preacher of circumcision1       
how is it that ,i am still suffering    
persecution8         ,in that case the  
,cross has ceased to be a               

stumbling-block6  #jje3jab ,would to    
,god that those who are unsettling your 
faith would         even mutilate       
themselves4  #jje3jac ,you however1     
brethren1 were called to freedom4  ,only
 do not turn         your freedom into  
an excuse for giving way to your lower  
natures2         but become bondservants
 to one another in a spirit of love4    
#jje3jad ,for the entire ,law has been  
obeyed when you have kept         the   
single precept1 which says1 ,you are to 
love your fellow         man equally    
with yourself4  #jje3jae ,but if you are
 perpetually snarling and snapping at   
one another1         beware lest you are
 destroyed by one another4  #jje3jaf    
,this then is what ,i mean4  ,let your  
lives be guided by the ,spirit1         
and then you will certainly not indulge 
the cravings of         your lower      
natures4  #jje3jag ,for the cravings of 
the lower nature are opposed to those of
         the ,spirit1 and the cravings  
of the ,spirit are opposed to those of  

the lower nature2 because these are     
antagonistic to each other1         so  
that you cannot do everything to which  
you are inclined4  #jje3jah ,but if the 
,spirit is leading you1 you are not     
subject to ,law4  #jje3jai ,now you know
 full well the doings of our lower      
natures4         ,fornication1 impurity1
 indecency1 idol-worship1 sorcery2      
#jje3jbj enmity1 strife1 jealousy1      
outbursts of passion1 intrigues1        
dissensions1 factions1 envyings2        
#jje3jba hard drinking1 riotous         
feasting1 and the like4  ,and as to     
these ,i forewarn you1 as ,i have       
already forewarned you1         that    
those who are guilty of such things will
 have no share         in the ,kingdom  
of ,god4  #jje3jbb ,the ,spirit1 on the 
other hand1 brings a harvest of love1   
joy1 peace2 patience towards others1    
kindness1 benevolence2  #jje3jbc good   
faith1 meekness1 self-restraint4        
#jje3jbd ,against such things as these  
there is no law4  ,now those who        

belong to ,christ ,jesus have crucified 
their lower nature         with its     
passions and appetites4  #jje3jbe ,if we
 are living by the ,spirit's power1 let 
our conduct also be         governed by 
the ,spirit's power4  #jje3jbf ,let us  
not become vain-glorious1 challenging   
one another1         envying one        
another4  #jjf3jja ,brethren1 if anybody
 be detected in any misconduct1 you who 
are         spiritual should restore    
such a one in a spirit of meekness4     
,and let each of you keep watch over    
himself1 lest he also         fall into 
temptation4  #jjf3jjb ,always carry one 
another's burdens1 and so obey the whole
         of ,christ's ,law4  #jjf3jjc   
,for if there is any one who thinks     
himself to be somebody         when he  
is nobody1 he is deluding himself4      
#jjf3jjd ,but let every man scrutinize  
his own conduct1 and then he will       
find out1 not with reference to another 
but with reference         to himself1  
what he has to boast of4  #jjf3jje ,for 

every man will have to carry his own    
load4  #jjf3jjf ,but let those who      
receive instruction in ,christian truth 
share         with their instructors all
 temporal blessings4  #jjf3jjg ,do not  
deceive yourselves4  ,god is not to be  
scoffed at4         ,for whatever a man 
sows1 that he will also reap4  #jjf3jjh 
,he who sows in the field of his lower  
nature1 will from that         nature   
reap destruction2 but he who sows to    
serve the ,spirit         will from the 
,spirit reap the ,life of the ,ages4    
#jjf3jji ,let us not abate our courage  
in doing what is right2         for in  
due time we shall reap a reward1 if we  
do not faint4  #jjf3jaj ,so then1 as we 
have opportunity1 let us labour for the 
good         of all1 and especially of  
those who belong to the household       
of the faith4  #jjf3jaa ,see in what    
large letters ,i am writing to you with 
my own hand4  #jjf3jab ,all who desire  
to display their zeal for external      
observances try         to compel you to

 receive circumcision1 but their real   
object         is simply to escape being
 persecuted for the ,cross of ,christ4  
#jjf3jac ,for these very men do not     
really keep the ,law of ,moses1         
but they would have you receive         
circumcision in order that they         
may glory in 99your99 bodies4  #jjf3jad 
,but as for me1 ,god forbid that ,i     
should glory in anything except         
the ,cross of our ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 
upon which the world         is         
crucified to me1 and ,i am crucified to 
the world4  #jjf3jae ,for neither       
circumcision nor uncircumcision is of   
any importance2         but only a      
renewed nature4  #jjf3jaf ,and all who  
shall regulate their lives by this      
principle--         may peace and mercy 
be given to them--and to the true       
,israel of ,god4  #jjf3jag ,from this   
time onward let no one trouble me2 for1 
as for me1         ,i bear1 branded on  
my body1 the scars of ,jesus as my      
,master4  #jjf3jah ,may the grace of our

 ,lord ,jesus ,christ be with your      
spirits1 brethren4  ,amen4
