one and the same ,god--,he who in each person brings about the whole result4 #jab3jjg ,but to each of us a manifestation of the ,spirit has been granted for the common good4 #jab3jjh ,to one the special faith2 to another various gifts of healing1 by means of the one ,spirit2 #jab3jaj to another the exercise of miraculous powers2 to another the gift of prophecy2 to another the power of discriminating between prophetic utterances2 to another varieties of the gift of tongues2' to another the interpretation of tongues4 #jab3jaa ,but these results are all brought about by one and the same ,spirit1 who bestows ,his gifts upon each of us in accordance with ,his own will4 #jab3jab ,for just as the human body is one and yet has many parts1 and all its parts1 many as they are1 constitute but one body1 so it is with the ,church of ,christ4 #jab3jac ,for1 in fact1 in one ,spirit all of us--whether we are ,jews or ,gentiles1 slaves or free men--were baptized to form but one body2 and we were all nourished by that one ,spirit4 #jab3jad ,for the human body does not consist of one part1 but of many4 #jab3jae ,were the foot to say1 ,because ,i am not a hand ,i am not a part those parts of the body which are apparently somewhat feeble are yet indispensable2 #jab3jbc and those which we deem less honorable we clothe with more abundant honor2 and so our ungraceful parts come to have a more abundant grace1 while our graceful parts have everything they need4 #jab3jbd ,but it was ,god who built up the body1 and bestowed more abundant honor on the part that felt the need1 #jab3jbe that there might be no disunion in the body1 but that all the members might entertain the same anxious care for one another's welfare4 #jab3jbf ,and if one part is suffering1 every other part suffers with it2 or if one part is receiving special honor1 every other part shares in the joy4 #jab3jbg ,as for you1 you are the body of ,christ1 and individually you are members of it4 #jab3jbh ,and by ,god's appointment there are in the ,church-- first ,apostles1 secondly ,prophets1 thirdly teachers4 ,then come miraculous powers1 and then ability to cure diseases or render loving service1 or powers of organization1 or varieties of the gift of tongues4' #jab3jbi ,are all ,apostles8 ,are all ,prophets8 ,are all teachers8 #jab3jcj ,have all miraculous powers8 ,have all ability to cure diseases8 ,do all speak in tongues'8 ,do all interpret8 #jab3jca ,but always seek to excel in the greater gifts4 ,and now ,i will point out to you a way of life which transcends all others4 #jac3jja ,if ,i can speak with the tongues of men and of angels1 but am destitute of ,love1 ,i have but become a loud-sounding trumpet or a clanging cymbal4 #jac3jjb ,if ,i possess the gift of prophecy and am versed in all mysteries and all knowledge1 and have such absolute faith that ,i can remove mountains1 but am destitute of ,love1 ,i am nothing4 #jac3jjc ,and if ,i distribute all my possessions to the poor1 and give up my body to be burned1 but am destitute of ,love1 it profits me nothing4 #jac3jjd ,love is patient and kind4 ,love knows neither envy nor jealousy4 ,love is not forward and fails4 ,but if there are prophecies1 they will be done away with2 if there are languages1 they will cease2 if there is knowledge1 it will be brought to an end4 #jac3jji ,for our knowledge is imperfect1 and so is our prophesying2 #jac3jaj but when the perfect state of things is come1 all that is imperfect will be brought to an end4 #jac3jaa ,when ,i was a child1 ,i talked like a child1 felt like a child1 reasoned like a child3 when ,i became a man1 ,i put from me childish ways4 #jac3jab ,for the present we see things as if in a mirror1 and are puzzled2 but then we shall see them face to face4 ,for the present the knowledge ,i gain is imperfect2 but then ,i shall know fully1 even as ,i am fully known4 #jac3jac ,and so there remain ,faith1 ,hope1 ,love--these three2 and of these the greatest is ,love4 #jad3jja ,be eager in your pursuit of this ,love1 and be earnestly ambitious for spiritual gifts1 but let it be chiefly so in order that you may prophesy4 #jad3jjb ,for he who speaks in an unknown tongue is not speaking to men1 but to ,god2 for no one understands him4 ,yet in the ,spirit he is speaking secret truths4 #jad3jjc ,but he who prophesies speaks to men words of edification1 encouragement and comfort4 #jad3jjd ,he who speaks in an unknown tongue does good to himself1 but he who prophesies does good to the ,church4 #jad3jje ,i should be right glad were you all to speak in tongues1' but yet more glad were you all to prophesy4 ,and1 in fact1 the man who prophesies is superior to him who speaks in tongues1' except when the latter can interpret in order that the ,church may get a blessing4 #jad3jjf ,but1 brethren1 as things are1 if ,i come to you speaking in tongues1' what benefit shall ,i confer on you1 if the utterance is neither in the form of a revelation nor of additional knowledge nor of prophecy nor of teaching8 #jad3jjg ,even inanimate things--flutes or harps1 for instance-- when yielding a sound1 if they make no distinction in the notes1 how shall the tune which is played on the flute or the harp be known8 #jad3jjh ,if the bugle--to take another example--gives an uncertain sound1 who will prepare for battle8 #jad3jji ,and so with you2 if with the living voice you fail to utter intelligible words1 how will people know what you are saying8 ,you will be talking to the winds4 #jad3jaj ,there are1 we will suppose1 a great number of languages in the world1 and no creature is without a language4 #jad3jaa ,if1 however1 ,i do not know the meaning of the particular language1 ,i shall seem to the speaker of it1 and he to me1 to be merely talking some foreign tongue4 #jad3jab ,therefore1 seeing that you are ambitious for spiritual gifts1 seek to excel in them so as to benefit the ,church4 #jad3jac ,therefore let a man who has the gift of tongues pray for the power of interpreting them4 #jad3jad ,for if ,i pray in an unknown tongue1 my spirit prays1 but my understanding is barren4 #jad3jae ,how then does the matter stand8 ,i will pray in spirit1 and ,i will pray with my understanding also4 ,i will praise ,god in spirit1 and ,i will praise ,him with my understanding also4 #jad3jaf ,otherwise1 if you bless ,god in spirit only1 how shall he who is in the position of an ungifted man say the ,amen' to your giving of thanks1 when he does not know what your words mean8 #jad3jag ,rightly enough you are giving thanks1 and yet your neighbor is not benefited4 #jad3jah ,i speak in a tongue1 thank ,god1 more than all of you2 #jad3jai but in the ,church ,i would rather speak five words with my understanding--so as to instruct others also--than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue4 #jad3jbj ,brethren1 do not prove yourselves to be children in your minds4 ,as regards evil1 indeed1 be utter babes1 but as regards your minds prove yourselves to be men of ripe years4 #jad3jba ,in the ,law it stands written1 ,by men of unknown tongues and by the lips of an unknown nation will ,i speak to this ,people1 but even then they will not listen to ,me'1 says the ,lord4 #jad3jbb ,this shows that the gift of tongues is intended as a sign not to those who believe but to unbelievers1 but prophecy is intended not for unbelievers but for those who believe4 #jad3jbc ,accordingly if the whole ,church has assembled and all are speaking in tongues1' and there come in ungifted men1 or unbelievers1 will they not say that you are all mad8 #jad3jbd ,if1 on the other hand1 every one is prophesying and an unbeliever or an ungifted man comes in1 he is convicted by all and closely examined by all1 #jad3jbe and the hidden evils of his heart are brought to light4 ,and1 as the result1 he will fall on his face and worship ,god1 and will report to others that of a truth ,god is among you4 #jad3jbf ,what then1 brethren8 ,whenever you assemble1 there is not one of you who is not ready either with a song of praise1 a sermon1 a revelation1 a tongue1' or an interpretation4 ,let everything be done with a view to the building up of faith and character4 #jad3jbg ,if there is speaking in an unknown tongue1 only two or at the most three should speak1 and they should do so one at a time1 and one should interpret2 #jad3jbh or if there is no interpreter1 let the man with the gift be silent in the ,church1 speaking to himself and to ,god4 #jad3jbi ,but if there are ,prophets1 let two or three speak and let the rest judge4 #jad3jcj ,and if anything is revealed to some one else who is seated there1 let the first be silent4 #jad3jca ,for you can all prophesy one by one1 so that all may learn and all be only that it has come8 #jad3jcg ,if any one deems himself to be a ,prophet or a man with spiritual gifts1 let him recognize as the ,lord's command all that ,i am now writing to you4 #jad3jch ,but if any one is ignorant1 let him be ignorant4 #jad3jci ,the conclusion1 my brethren1 is this4 ,be earnestly ambitious to prophesy1 and do not check speaking with tongues2 #jad3jdj only let everything be
