the power         of a foul spirit

to do with us1 ,jesus the ,nazarene8    
,have you         come to destroy us8   
,i know who you are--,god's ,holy ,one4

saying1 ,silence6 come out of him4

throwing the man into convulsions1      
came out of him with a loud cry4

another1         ,what does this mean8  
,here is a new sort of teaching--       
and a tone of authority6  ,and even to  
foul spirits he issues         orders

fame spread at once everywhere in all   
that part of ,galilee4  #jja3jbi ,then  

on leaving the synagogue they came at   
once1 with ,james         and ,john1 to 
the house of ,simon and ,andrew4        
#jja3jcj ,now ,simon's mother-in-law was
 ill in bed with a fever1         and   
without delay they informed ,him about  
her4  #jja3jca ,so ,he went to her1 and 
taking her hand ,he raised her to her   
feet3         the fever left her1 and   
she began to wait upon them4  #jja3jcb  
,when it was evening1 after sunset      
people came bringing ,him         all   
who were sick and the demoniacs2

assembled at the door4  #jja3jcd ,then  
,he cured numbers of people who were ill

drove out many demons2 not allowing the 
demons to speak1         because they

         because for that purpose ,i

through all ,galilee1 preaching in the  
synagogues         and expelling the    
demons4  #jja3jdj ,one day there came a 
leper to ,jesus entreating ,him1        
and pleading on his knees4  ,if you are 
willing1 he said1         you are able  
to cleanse me4  #jja3jda ,moved with    
pity ,jesus reached out ,his hand and   
touched him4         ,i am willing1 ,he 
said2 be cleansed4  #jja3jdb ,the       
leprosy at once left him1 and he was

matter abroad1 so that it was no longer 
possible         for ,jesus to go openly
 into any town2 but ,he had to remain   
outside in unfrequented places1 where   
people came to ,him         from all    
parts4  #jjb3jja ,after some days ,he   
entered ,capernaum again1 and it soon   
became         known that ,he was at    
home2  #jjb3jjb and such numbers of     
people came together that there was no  
longer room for them even round the     
door4  ,he was speaking         ,his    
,message to them1  #jjb3jjc when there  
came a party of people bringing a       
paralytic--         four men carrying   
him4  #jjb3jjd ,finding themselves      
unable1 however1 to bring him to ,jesus 
because of the crowd1 they untiled the  
roof just over ,his head1         and   
after clearing an opening they lowered  
the mat on which         the paralytic  

was lying4  #jjb3jje ,seeing their      
faith1 ,jesus said to the paralytic1 ,my
 son1         your sins are pardoned4   
#jjb3jjf ,now there were some of the    
,scribes sitting there1 and reasoning   
in their hearts4  #jjb3jjg ,why does    
this man use such words8 they said2 he  
is blaspheming4         ,who can pardon 
sins but ,one--that is1 ,god8  #jjb3jjh 
,at once perceiving by ,his spirit that 
they were reasoning         within      
themselves1 ,jesus asked them1 ,why do  
you thus argue         in your minds8   
#jjb3jji ,which is easier8--to say to   
this paralytic1 ',your sins are         
pardoned1'         or to say1 ',rise1   
take up your mat1 and walk8'  #jjb3jaj  
,but that you may know that the ,son of 
,man has authority on earth         to  
pardon sins--,he turned to the          
paralytic1 and said1  #jjb3jaa ,to you  
,i say1 ',rise1 take up your mat and go 
home4'  #jjb3jab ,the man rose1 and     
immediately under the eyes of all took  
up his mat and went out1 so that they   

were all filled         with            
astonishment1 gave the glory to ,god1   
and said1         ,we never saw anything
 like this4  #jjb3jac ,again ,he went   
out to the shore of the ,lake1 and the  
whole         multitude kept coming to  
,him1 and ,he taught them4  #jjb3jad    
,and as ,he passed by1 ,he saw ,levi the
 son of ,alphaeus         sitting at the
 ,toll ,office1 and said to him1 ,follow
 me4         ,so he rose and followed   
,him4  #jjb3jae ,when ,he was sitting at
 table in ,levi's house1 a large number 
of tax-gatherers and notorious sinners  
were at table         with ,jesus and   
,his disciples2 for there were many such
 who         habitually followed ,him4

,pharisee sect saw ,him eating with     
the sinners and the tax-gatherers1 they 
said to ,his disciples1         ,he is  
eating and drinking with the

,jesus heard the words1 and ,he said1   
,it is not the healthy         who      

require a doctor1 but the sick3  ,i did 
not come to appeal         to the       
righteous1 but to sinners4  #jjb3jah    
7,now ,john's disciples and those of the
 ,pharisees were keeping         a      
fast47  ,and they came and asked ,him1  
,how is it that         ,john's         
disciples and those of the ,pharisees   
are fasting1         and yours are not8 
#jjb3jai ,can a wedding party fast while
 the bridegroom is among them8          
replied ,jesus4  ,so long as they have  
the bridegroom with them1               
fasting is impossible4  #jjb3jbj ,but a 
time will come when the ,bridegroom will
 be taken away         from them2 then  
they will fast4  #jjb3jba ,no one mends 
an old garment with a piece of unshrunk 
cloth4         ,otherwise1 the patch put
 on would tear away from it--           
the new from the old--and a worse hole  
would be made4  #jjb3jbb ,and no one    
pours new wine into old wineskins4      
,otherwise the wine         would burst 
the skins1 and both wine and skins would

 be lost4         ,new wine needs fresh 
skins6  #jjb3jbc ,one ,sabbath ,he was  
walking through the wheatfields when    
,his         disciples began to pluck   
the ears of wheat as they went4         
#jjb3jbd ,so the ,pharisees said to     
,him1 ,look6 why are they doing what on 
the ,sabbath is unlawful8  #jjb3jbe     
,have you never read1 ,jesus replied1   
what ,david did when         the        
necessity arose and he and his men were

house of ,god in the ,high-priesthood of

priests         are allowed to eat--and

there with one arm shrivelled up4

see whether ,he would cure him          
on the ,sabbath--so as to have a charge

forward1 said ,he to the man with the   
shrivelled arm4  #jjc3jjd ,then ,he     
asked them1 ,are we allowed to do good  
on the ,sabbath1         or to do evil8 
to save a life1 or to destroy one8

,grieved and indignant at the hardening 
of their hearts1         ,he looked     
round on them with anger1 and said to   
the man1         ,stretch out your arm4 
,he stretched it out1 and the arm

synagogue than they         held a      
consultation with the ,herodians against
 ,jesus1         to devise some means of

people from ,galilee followed ,him2

 and ,idumaea and from beyond           

the ,jordan and from the district of    
,tyre and ,sidon there came         to  
,him a vast crowd1 hearing of all that  
,he was doing4  #jjc3jji ,so ,he gave   
directions to ,his disciples to keep a  
small         boat in constant          
attendance on ,him because of the       
throng--         to prevent their       
crushing ,him4  #jjc3jaj ,for ,he had   
cured many of the people1 so that all   
who had any         ailments pressed    
upon ,him1 to touch ,him4  #jjc3jaa ,and
 the foul spirits1 whenever they saw    
,him1 threw themselves         down at  
,his feet1 screaming out3  ,you are the 
,son of ,god4  #jjc3jab ,but ,he many a 
time checked them1 forbidding them to   
say         who ,he was4  #jjc3jac ,then
 ,he went up the hill2 and those whom   
,he ,himself chose         ,he called1  
and they came to ,him4  #jjc3jad ,he    
appointed twelve of them1 that they     
might be with ,him1         and that ,he
 might also send them to proclaim ,his

the son of ,zabdi and ,john the brother 
of ,james         7these two ,he        
surnamed ,boanerges1 that is ',sons of  
,thunder'71  #jjc3jah ,andrew1 ,philip1 
,bartholomew1 ,matthew1 ,thomas1 ,james 
the son         of ,alphaeus1           
,thaddaeus1 ,simon the ,cananaean1      
#jjc3jai and ,judas ,iscariot1 the man  
who also betrayed ,him4  #jjc3jbj ,and  
,he went into a house4  ,but again the  
crowd assembled1         so that there  
was no opportunity for them even to     
snatch a meal4  #jjc3jba ,hearing of    
this1 ,his relatives came to seize ,him 
by force1         for they said1 ,he is 
out of his mind4  #jjc3jbb ,the         
,scribes1 too1 who had come down from   
,jerusalem said1         ,he has        
,baal-zebul in him2 and it is by the    
power of the ,prince         of the     
demons that he expels the demons4       
#jjc3jbc ,so ,he called them to ,him1   

and using figurative language ,he       
appealed to them1 saying1 ,how is it    
possible for ,satan         to expel    
,satan8  #jjc3jbd ,for if civil war     
breaks out in a kingdom1 nothing can    
make         that kingdom last2         
#jjc3jbe and if a family splits into    
parties1 that family cannot continue4   
#jjc3jbf ,so if ,satan has risen in arms
 and has made war upon himself1         
stand he cannot1 but meets his end4     
#jjc3jbg ,nay1 no one can go into a     
strong man's house and carry off        
his property1 unless he first binds the 
strong man1 and then         he will    
plunder his house4  #jjc3jbh ,in solemn 
truth ,i tell you that all their sins   
may be pardoned         to the sons of  
men1 and all their blasphemies1 however 
they         may have blasphemed2       
#jjc3jbi but whoever blasphemes against 
the ,holy ,spirit1 he remains           
for ever unabsolved3  he is guilty of a 
sin of the ,ages4  #jjc3jcj ,this was   
because they said1 ,he is possessed by a

 foul spirit4  #jjc3jca ,by this time   
,his mother and ,his brothers arrive1   
and standing         outside they send a
 message to ,him to call ,him4  #jjc3jcb
 ,now a crowd was sitting round ,him2 so
 they tell ,him1 ,your mother           
and your brothers and sisters are       
outside1 inquiring for you4  #jjc3jcc   
,who are my mother and my brothers8  ,he
 replied4  #jjc3jcd ,and1 fixing ,his   
eyes on the people who were sitting     
round ,him         in a circle1 ,he     
said1  #jjc3jce ,here are my mother and 
my brothers4  ,for wherever there       
is one who has been obedient to ,god1   
there is my brother--         my        
sister--and my mother4  #jjd3jja ,once  
more ,he began to teach by the side of  
the ,lake1         and a vast multitude 
of people came together to listen to    
,him4         ,he therefore went on     
board the boat and sat there1 a little  
way from the land2 and all the people   
were on the shore close         to the  
water4  #jjd3jjb ,then ,he proceeded to 

teach them many lessons in figurative   
language2         and in ,his teaching  
,he said1  #jjd3jjc ,listen3 the sower  
goes out to sow4  #jjd3jjd ,as he sows1 
some of the seed falls by the way-side1 
and the birds         come and peck it  
up4  #jjd3jje ,some falls on the rocky  
ground where it finds but little earth1 
and it shoots up quickly because it has 
no depth of soil2  #jjd3jjf but when the
 sun is risen1 it is scorched1 and      
through having         no root it       
withers away4  #jjd3jjg ,some1 again1   
falls among the thorns2 and the thorns  
spring up         and stifle it1 so that
 it yields no crop4  #jjd3jjh ,but some 
of the seed falls into good ground1 and 
gives a return3         it comes up and 
increases1 and yields thirty1 sixty1    
or a hundred-fold4  #jjd3jji ,listen1   
,he added1 every one who has ears to    
listen with6  #jjd3jaj ,when ,he was    
alone1 the ,twelve and the others who   
were about ,him         requested ,him  
to explain ,his figurative language4    

#jjd3jaa ,to you1 ,he replied1 has been 
entrusted the secret truth              
concerning the ,kingdom of ,god2 but to 
those others outside         your number
 all this is spoken in figurative       
language2  #jjd3jab that ',they may look
 and look but not see1 and listen and   
listen but not understand1 lest         
perchance they should return         and
 be pardoned4'  #jjd3jac ,do you all    
miss the meaning of this parable8  ,he  
added2         how then will you        
understand the rest of my parables8     
#jjd3jad ,what the sower sows is the    
,message4  #jjd3jae ,those who receive  
the seed by the way-side are those in   
whom         the ,message is sown1 but1 
when they have heard it1 ,satan comes   
at once and carries away the ,message   
sown in them4  #jjd3jaf ,in the same way
 those who receive the seed on the rocky
         places are those who1 when they
 have heard the ,message1         at    
once accept it joyfully1  #jjd3jag but  
they have no root within them4  ,they   

last for a time2         then1 when     
suffering or persecution comes because  
of the ,message1         they are       
immediately overthrown4  #jjd3jah       
,others there are who receive the seed  
among the thorns3         these are they
 who have heard the ,message1  #jjd3jai 
but worldly cares and the deceitfulness 
of wealth and the excessive             
pursuit of other objects come in and    
stifle the ,message1         and it     
becomes unfruitful4  #jjd3jbj ,those1 on
 the other hand1 who have received the  
seed on         the good ground1 are all
 who hear the ,message and welcome it1  
and yield a return of thirty1 sixty1 or 
a hundred fold4  #jjd3jba ,he went on to
 say1 ,is the lamp brought in in order  
to be put         under the bushel or   
under the bed8  ,is it not rather in    
order         that it may be placed on  
the lampstand8  #jjd3jbb ,why1 there is 
nothing hidden except with a view to its
 being         ultimately disclosed1 nor
 has anything been made a secret        

but that it may at last come to light4  
#jjd3jbc ,listen1 every one who has ears
 to listen with6  #jjd3jbd ,he also said
 to them1 ,take care what you hear4     
,with what measure you measure1 it will 
be measured to you1         and that    
with interest4  #jjd3jbe ,for those who 
have will have more given them2 and from
 those         who have not1 even what  
they have will be taken away4  #jjd3jbf 
,another saying of ,his was this3  ,the 
,kingdom of ,god is as if         a man 
scattered seed over the ground3

awake1 now asleep1 while the seed       
sprouts and grows tall1 he knows not

produces the crop--first the blade1 then
 the ear2         afterwards the perfect

,but no sooner is the crop ripe1 than he
 sends the reapers1         because the

,another saying of ,his was this3  ,how 
are we to picture the ,kingdom          

of ,god8 or by what figure of speech    
shall we represent it8  #jjd3jca ,it is 
like a mustard-seed1 which1 when sown in
 the earth1         is the smallest of  
all the seeds in the world2  #jjd3jcb   
yet when sown it springs up and becomes 
larger than all the herbs1         and  
throws out great branches1 so that the  
birds build         under its shadow4   
#jjd3jcc ,with many such parables ,he   
used to speak the ,message to them      
according to their capacity for         
receiving it4  #jjd3jcd ,but except in  
figurative language ,he spoke nothing to
 them2         while to ,his own        
disciples ,he expounded everything1 in  
private4  #jjd3jce ,the same day1 in the
 evening1 ,he said to them1 ,let us     
cross         to the other side4        
#jjd3jcf ,so they got away from the     
crowd1 and took ,him--as ,he was--      
in the boat2 and other boats accompanied

came on1 and the waves were now dashing

left securely bound in fetters          

and chains1 but afterwards the chains

         ,so the people came to see what

the demoniac quietly seated1            
clothed and of sane mind--the man who   
had had the legion2         and they

who had seen it told them the           
particulars of what had         happened
 to the demoniac1 and all about the     
swine4  #jje3jag ,then they began       
entreating ,him to depart from their    
district4  #jje3jah ,as ,he was         
embarking1 the man who had been         
possessed asked         permission to   

accompany ,him4  #jje3jai ,but ,he would
 not allow it4  ,go home to your family1

all that the ,lord has done for you1

and ,he was on the shore         of the

the ,wardens of the ,synagogue--        
he was called ,jair--who1 on beholding  
,him1 threw himself         at ,his     
feet1  #jje3jbc and besought ,him with  
many entreaties4  ,my little daughter1

years had suffered from haemorrhage1

without receiving benefit         but on

crowd behind ,him and         touched

,i but touch ,his clothes1 ,i shall be

of her blood ceased1 and she felt in    
herself         that her complaint was

well knowing that healing power had gone
         from within ,him1 turned round 
in the crowd and asked1         ,who

the multitude pressing you on all sides1
         ,his disciples exclaimed1 and  
yet you ask1 ',who touched me8'

about to see the person who had done

frightened and trembling1 knowing what  
had happened to her1 came and threw     
herself at ,his feet1         and told

 ,he said1 your faith has cured you3  go
 in peace1         and be free from your

speaking1 men come from the house to the

 and that is why these miraculous       
,powers         are working in him4

,elijah4  ,others again said1           
,he is a ,prophet1 like one of the great

heard of ,him1 he said1 ,the ,john1 whom
 ,i beheaded1         has come back to  
life4  #jjf3jag ,for ,herod himself had 

sent and had had ,john arrested and had 
kept him in prison in chains1 for the   
sake of ,herodias1         his brother  
,philip's wife2 because he had married  
her4  #jjf3jah ,for ,john had repeatedly
 told ,herod1 ,you have no right to be  
living with your brother's wife4        
#jjf3jai ,therefore ,herodias hated him 
and wished to take his life1         but
 could not2  #jjf3jbj for ,herod stood  
in awe of ,john1 knowing him to be an   
upright         and holy man1 and he    
protected him4  ,after listening to him 
he was         in great perplexity1 and 
yet he found a pleasure in listening4

opportunity4  ,herod on his birthday    
gave a banquet to the nobles of his     
court and to the tribunes         and   
the principal people in ,galilee1       
#jjf3jbb at which ,herodias's own       
daughter came in and danced1         and
 so charmed ,herod and his guests that  
he said to her1         ,ask me for     
anything you please1 and ,i will give it

her1 ,whatever you ask me for ,i will   
give you1         up to half my kingdom4

said to her mother3  ,what shall ,i ask 
for8         ,the head of ,john the

girl immediately came in1 in haste1 to  
the ,king and made         her request4

give me1         here and now1 on a     
dish1 the head of ,john the ,baptist4

intensely sorry1 yet for the sake of his
 oaths1         and of his guests1 would

 said to them1 ,come away1 all of you1  
to a quiet place1         and rest      
awhile4  ,for there were many coming and
 going1         so that they had no time

they sailed away in the boat to a

 people saw them going1 and many knew   
them2 and coming         by land they   
ran together there from all the         
neighbouring towns1         and arrived

landed1 ,he saw a vast multitude2 and   
,his heart         was moved with pity  
for them1 because they were like sheep  
which         have no shepherd1 and ,he 
proceeded to teach them many things4

,this is a lonely place1 and the hour is

 they may go to the farms and villages  
near         here and buy themselves

food yourselves1 ,he replied4  ,are we1 
they asked1         to go and buy two   
hundred shillings' worth of bread and

loaves have you8  ,he inquired2 go and

said1 ,five2 and a couple of fish4

all sit down in companies on         the

leaving ,him behind         to dismiss

was come1 the boat was half way across  
the ,lake1         while he ,himself was

towards morning ,he came towards them

and all the ,jews--being1 as they are1  
zealous for the traditions of the       
,elders--never eat without         first
 carefully washing their hands1

they will not eat without               
bathing first2 and they have a good many
 other customs         which they have  
received traditionally and cling to1    
such as the rinsing of cups and pots and
 of bronze utensils1         and the

,pharisees and ,scribes put the question
 to ,him3  ,why do         your         
disciples transgress the traditions of  
the ,elders1         and eat their food 
with unclean hands8  #jjg3jjf ,rightly  
did ,isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites1 
,he replied2         as it is written1  
',this ,people honour ,me with their    
lips1         while their hearts are far
 away from ,me3  #jjg3jjg ,but idle is  
their devotion while they lay down      

precepts         which are mere human   
rules4'  #jjg3jjh ,you neglect ,god's   
,commandment3  you hold fast to men's   
traditions4  #jjg3jji ,praiseworthy     
indeed6  ,he added1 to set at nought    
,god's ,commandment in order to observe 
your own traditions6  #jjg3jaj ,for     
,moses said1 ',honour thy father and thy
 mother' and again1         ',he who    
curses father or mother1 let him die the
 death4'  #jjg3jaa ,but 99you99 say1    
',if a man says to his father or mother1
 ,it is         a ,korban 7that is1 a   
thing devoted to ,god71 whatever it is1 
which otherwise you would have received 
from me--'  #jjg3jab ,and so you no     
longer allow him to do anything for his 
father or mother1  #jjg3jac thus        
nullifying ,god's precept by your       
tradition which you         have handed 
down4  ,and many things of that kind you
 do4  #jjg3jad ,then ,jesus called the  
people to ,him again4  ,listen to me1   
all of you1 ,he said1 and understand4   
#jjg3jae ,there is nothing outside a man

 which entering him can make         him
 unclean2 but it is the things which    
come out of a man         that make him

 had left the crowd and gone indoors1   
,his disciples         began to ask ,him
 about this figure of speech4  #jjg3jah 
,have 99you99 also so little            
understanding8  ,he replied2         do 
you not understand that anything        
whatever that enters         a man from 
outside cannot make him unclean1        
#jjg3jai because it does not go into his
 heart1 but into his stomach1           
and passes away ejected from him8  ,by  
these words ,jesus         pronounced   
all kinds of food clean4  #jjg3jbj ,what
 comes out of a man1 ,he added1 that it 
is which         makes him unclean4     
#jjg3jba ,for from within1 out of men's 
hearts1 their evil purposes proceed--   
fornication1 theft1 murder1 adultery1

deceit1 licentiousness1 envy1           
reviling1 pride1 reckless folly3        

#jjg3jbc all these wicked things come   
out from within and make         a man  
unclean4  #jjg3jbd ,then ,he rose and   
left that place and went into the       
neighbourhood         of ,tyre and      
,sidon4  ,here ,he entered a house and  
wished no         one to know it1 but   
,he could not escape observation4       
#jjg3jbe ,forthwith a woman whose little
 daughter was possessed by a foul       
spirit heard of ,him1 and came and flung
 herself at ,his feet4  #jjg3jbf ,she   
was a ,gentile woman1 a ,syro-phoenician
 by nation3         and again and again 
she begged ,him to expel the demon      
from her daughter4  #jjg3jbg ,let the   
children first eat all they want1 ,he   
said2         it is not right to take   
the children's bread and throw it       
to the dogs4  #jjg3jbh ,true1 ,sir1 she 
replied1 and yet the dogs under the     
table         eat the children's scraps4

 home1 ,he replied2 the demon

 ,so she went home1 and found the child 
lying on the bed1         and the demon 
gone4  #jjg3jca ,returning from the     
neighbourhood of ,tyre1 ,he came by way 
of ,sidon to the ,lake of ,galilee1     
passing through the district         of 
the ,ten ,towns4  #jjg3jcb ,here they   
brought to ,him a deaf man that         
stammered1 on whom         they begged  
,him to lay ,his hands4  #jjg3jcc ,so   
,jesus taking him aside1 apart from the 
crowd1 put ,his         fingers into his
 ears1 and spat1 and moistened his      
tongue2  #jjg3jcd and looking up to     
,heaven ,he sighed1 and said to him1

opened1 and his tongue became untied1   
and he began to speak perfectly4

tell no one2 but the more ,he charged

,the amazement was extreme4  ,he        
succeeds in everything         he       

attempts1 they exclaimed2 he even makes 
deaf men hear         and dumb men

was again an immense crowd1 and they    
found themselves with nothing to eat4

the third day they have remained with

possibly get bread here in this remote

,his disciples to distribute these also4

abundant meal2 and what remained over   
they         picked up and carried

,now they had forgotten to take bread1  

nor had they more than         a single

 yeast of the ,pharisees and the yeast

 words to one another by saying1

perceived what they were saying1 and ,he
 said to them1         ,what is this    
discussion of yours about having no     
bread8         ,do you not yet see and  
understand8  ,are your minds so

have eyes6 can you not see8  ,you have  
ears6 can you not         hear8 and have

how many         baskets did you carry  
away full of broken portions8

hampers full         of portions did you

,bethsaida4  ,and a blind man was       
brought         to ,jesus and they

,so ,he took the blind man by the arm   
and brought him out         of the      
village1 and spitting into his eyes ,he 
put ,his hands         on him and asked

,he looked up and said1 ,i can see the  
people3  ,i see them         like       
trees--only walking4  #jjh3jbe ,then for
 the second time ,he put ,his hands on  
the man's eyes1         and the man1    
looking steadily1 recovered his sight

added1 ,do not even go into the village4

,his disciples went to the villages     
belonging to ,caesarea ,philippi4  ,on

replied1 but others say ,elijah1        

and others1 that it is one of the

them pointedly1 ,but you yourselves1 who

are the ,christ1 answered ,peter4

to tell this about ,him to any one4

 told them1 ,the ,son of ,man           
must endure much suffering1 and be      
rejected by the ,elders         and the

put to death1         and after two days

them plainly2 whereupon ,peter took ,him
 and began         to remonstrate with

his life for my sake1 and for the sake  
of the ,good ,news1 will secure it4

man to gain the whole world         and

could a man give to buy back his life8

been ashamed of me and of my            
teachings in this faithless and sinful  
age1 of him the ,son         of ,man    
also will be ashamed when ,he comes in  
,his ,father's         glory with the

say1 ,in solemn truth ,i tell you that  
some of         those who are standing  
here will certainly not taste death till
         they have seen the ,kingdom of

,six days later1 ,jesus took with ,him  
,peter1 ,james1 and ,john1         and  
brought them alone1 apart from the rest1

 up a high mountain2         and in     
their presence ,his appearance underwent
 a change4  #jji3jjc ,his garments also 
became dazzling with brilliant          
whiteness--         such whiteness as no
 bleaching on earth could give4         
#jji3jjd ,moreover there appeared to    
them ,elijah accompanied by ,moses2     
and the two were conversing with ,jesus1

,rabbi1 we are thankful to you          
that we are here4  ,let us put up three 
tents--one for you1         one for     
,moses1 and one for ,elijah4  #jji3jjf  
,for he knew not what to say3  they were

there came a cloud spreading over them1 
and a voice         issued from the

they were coming down from the mountain1

to tell any one what they had seen until

another what was meant by the rising

does indeed come first and reforms

it is written of the ,son of ,man that

disciples1 they saw an immense crowd

and awe-struck1 and yet they ran forward

one of the crowd1 ,i have brought you my
 son4         ,he has a dumb spirit in

and he foams at the mouth and grinds his

,i begged your disciples to expel it1   
but they         had not the power4

 be with you8 how long must ,i have     
patience with you8         ,bring the

him to ,jesus4  ,and the spirit1 when he
 saw ,jesus1         immediately threw  
the youth into convulsions1 so that he  
fell         on the ground and rolled

often it has thrown him into the fire or

would be better for you to enter into   
the ,kingdom of ,god         half-blind 
than remain in possession of two eyes

,every one1 however1 will be salted with

but if the salt should become tasteless1
         what will you use to give it

will put a question to you1 replied     
,jesus2 answer me1         and then ,i  
will tell you by what authority ,i do

,baptism--was it of ,heavenly or of     
human origin8         ,answer me4

with one another4         ,suppose we   
say1 ',heavenly1' they argued1 he will

,then ,he began to speak to them in     
figurative language4         ,there was 

once a man1 ,he said1 who planted a     
vineyard1         fenced it round1 dug a
 pit for the wine-tank1 and built       
a strong lodge4  ,then he let the place 
to vine-dressers         and went       
abroad4  #jab3jjb ,at vintage-time he   
sent one of his servants to receive from
         the vine-dressers a share of   
the grapes4  #jab3jjc ,but they seized  
him1 beat him cruelly and sent him away 
empty-handed4  #jab3jjd ,again he sent  
to them another servant3  and as for    
him1         they wounded him in the    
head and treated him shamefully4

they killed4  ,and he sent         many 
besides1 and them also they ill-treated1

people2 for they saw that in this

hypocrisy1 replied1 ,why try to ensnare

came to ,him a party of ,sadducees1 a   
sect which denies that         there is 
any ,resurrection2 and they proceeded to

',if a man's brother should die and     

leave a wife1 but no child1         the 
man shall marry the widow and raise up a

wife1         but at his death left no

your error1 replied ,jesus--your        
ignorance alike of the ,scriptures and

when they have risen from among the     
dead1 men do not marry         and women
 are not given in marriage1 but they are
 as angels         are in ,heaven4

rise to life1 have you never            
read in the ,book of ,moses1 in the     

passage about the ,bush1         how    
,god said to him1 ',i am the ,god of    
,abraham1 the ,god of ,isaac1

is not the ,god of dead1 but of living  
men4         ,you are in grave error4

had heard them disputing and            
well knew that ,jesus had given them an

 of widows and then mask their

these men will receive         far

taken a seat opposite the ,treasury1 ,he
 observed         how the people were   
dropping money into the ,treasury1      
and that many of the wealthy threw in   
large sums4  #jab3jdb ,but there came   
one poor widow and dropped in two       
farthings1         equal in value to a  
halfpenny4  #jab3jdc ,so ,he called ,his
 disciples to ,him and said1 ,in solemn 
truth ,i         tell you that this     
widow1 poor as she is1 has thrown in    

more         than all the other         
contributors to the ,treasury2  #jab3jdd
 for they have all contributed out of   
what they could well spare1         but 
she out of her need has thrown in all   
she possessed--         all she had to

wonderful stones6 what wonderful

great buildings8  ,jesus replied2 not   
one         stone will be left here upon

apart from the others asked ,him1

 nation will rise in arms against       
nation1 and kingdom         against     
kingdom4  ,there will be earthquakes in 
various places2         there will be   
famines4  ,these miseries are but like  
the early         pains of childbirth4  
#jac3jji ,you yourselves must be on your
 guard4  ,they will deliver         you 
up to ,sanhedrins2 you will be brought  
into synagogues         and cruelly     
beaten2 and you will stand before       
governors         and kings for my sake1
 to be witnesses to them for me4

,good ,news must be carried to all      
the ,gentiles before the ,end comes4    
#jac3jaa ,when however they are marching
 you along under arrest1         do not 
be anxious beforehand about what you are
 to say1         but speak what is given

will not be you who speak1 but the ,holy

 brother to be killed1 and fathers will 
betray children2 and children will rise 
against their parents         and have

you see the ,abomination of ,desolation 
standing where he ought not--let the

 let those in ,judaea escape to the

roof not come down and enter the house

and let not him who is in the field turn

women who at that time are with child

for ,himself ,he has cut short the days4

or ',see1 ,he is there6' do not believe

displaying signs and prodigies with a

that were possible--even ,god's own

yourselves1 be on your guard3  ,i have  
forewarned         you of everything4

that distress1 the sun will be          
darkened and the moon will not shed her

forces         which are in the heavens

advancing into the midst         of them

remained silent1 and gave no reply4  ,a 
second time         the ,high ,priest   
questioned ,him4  ,are you the ,christ1

and others will see the ,son         of 
,man sitting at the right hand of the   
divine ,power1         and coming amid
