contained instructions and admonitions which ,st4 ,john was commanded to write to the seven bishops of the churches in ,asia4 ,and in the following chapters1 to the end1 are contained prophecies of things that are to come to pass in the ,church of ,christ1 particularly towards the end of the world1 in the time of ,antichrist4 ,it was written in ,greek1 in the island of ,patmos1 where ,st4 ,john was in banishment by order of the cruel emperor ,domitian1 about sixty-four years after our ,lord's ,ascension4 ,apocalypse ,chapter #a ,st4 ,john is ordered to write to the seven churches in ,asia4 ,the manner of ,christ's appearing to him4 #a3a4 ,the ,revelation of ,jesus ,christ1 which ,god gave unto him1 to make known to his servants the things which must shortly come to pass3 and signified1 sending by his angel to his servant ,john1 ,the things which must shortly come444 and again it is said1 ver4 #c1 ,the time is at hand444 ,this can not be meant of all the things prophesied in the ,apocalypse1 where mention is made also of the day of judgment1 and of the glory of heaven at the end of the world4 ,that some things were to come to pass shortly1 is evident1 by what is said to the ,seven ,churches1 chap4 #b and #c1 ,or that the persecutions foretold should begin shortly4 ,or that these words signified1 that all time is short1 and that from the coming of ,christ1 we are now in the last age or last hour4 ,see #a ,john #b4ah4 #a3b4 ,who hath given testimony to the word of ,god and the testimony of ,jesus ,christ1 what things soever he hath seen4 #a3c4 ,blessed is he that readeth and heareth the words of this prophecy3 and keepeth those things which are written in it4 ,for the time is at hand4 #a3d4 ,john to the seven churches which are in ,asia4 ,grace be unto you and peace1 from him that is and that was and that is to come3 and from the seven spirits which are before his throne3 #a3e4 ,and from ,jesus ,christ1 who is the faithful witness1 the first begotten of the dead and the prince of the kings of the earth1 who hath loved us and washed us from our sins in his own blood1 #a3f4 ,and hath made us a kingdom1 and priests to ,god and his ,father4 ,to him be glory and empire for ever and ever4 ,amen4 #a3g4 ,behold1 he cometh with the clouds1 and every eye shall see him3 and they also that pierced him4 ,and all the tribes of the earth shall bewail themselves are the names of the first and last letters of the ,greek alphabet1 and signify the same as what follows3 ,the beginning and the end3 the first cause and last end of all beings3 who is1 and who was1 and who is to come1 the ,almighty444 ,these words signify the true ,god only1 and are here applied to our ,lord and ,saviour ,jesus ,christ1 who is to come again to judge the living and the dead4 #a3i4 ,i1 ,john1 your brother and your partner in tribulation and in the kingdom and patience in ,christ ,jesus1 was in the island which is called ,patmos1 for the word of ,god and for the testimony of ,jesus4 #a3aj4 ,i was in the spirit on the ,lord's day and heard behind me a great voice1 as of a trumpet1 #a3aa4 ,saying3 ,what thou seest1 write in a book and send to the seven churches which are in ,asia3 to ,ephesus and to ,smyrna and to ,pergamus and to ,thyatira and to ,sardis and to ,philadelphia and to ,laodicea4 #a3ab4 ,and ,i turned to see the voice that spoke with me4 ,and being turned1 ,i saw seven golden candlesticks3 #a3ac4 ,and in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks1 one like to the ,son of man1 clothed with a garment down to the feet1 and girt about the paps with a golden girdle4 #a3ad4 ,and his head and his hairs were white as white wool and as snow4 ,and his eyes were as a flame of fire3 #a3ae4 ,and his feet like unto fine brass1 as in a burning furnace4 ,and his voice as the sound of many waters4 #a3af4 ,and he had in his right hand seven stars4 ,and from his mouth came out a sharp two-edged sword4 ,and his face was as the sun shineth in his power4 #a3ag4 ,and when ,i had seen him1 ,i fell at his feet as dead4 ,and he laid his right hand upon me1 saying3 ,fear not4 ,i am the ,first and the ,last1 #a3ah4 ,and alive1 and was dead4 ,and behold ,i am living for ever and ever and have the keys of death and of hell4 #a3ai4 ,write therefore the things which thou hast seen3 and which are3 and which must be done hereafter4 #a3bj4 ,the mystery of the seven stars1 which thou sawest in my right hand and the seven golden candlesticks4 ,the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches4 ,and the seven candlesticks are the seven churches4 ,apocalypse ,chapter #b ,directions what to write to the angels or bishops of ,ephesus1 ,smyrna1 ,pergamus and ,thyatira4 #b3a4 ,unto the angel of the church of ,ephesus write3 ,these things saith he who holdeth the seven stars in his right hand1 who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks3 #b3b4 ,i know thy works and thy labour and thy patience and how thou canst not bear them that are evil4 ,and thou hast tried them who say they are apostles and are not3 and hast found them liars3 #b3c4 ,and thou hast patience and hast endured for my name and hast not fainted4 #b3d4 ,but ,i have somewhat against thee1 because thou hast left thy first charity4 #b3e4 ,be mindful therefore from whence thou art fallen3 and do penance and do the first works4 ,or else ,i come to thee and will move thy candlestick out of its place1 except thou do penance4 #b3f4 ,but this thou hast1 that thou hatest the deeds of the ,nicolaites1 which ,i also hate4 #b3g4 ,he that hath an ear let him hear what the ,spirit saith to the churches3 ,to him that overcometh ,i will give to eat of the tree of life which is in the paradise of my ,god4 #b3h4 ,and to the angel of the church of ,smyrna write3 ,these things saith the ,first and the ,last1 who was dead and is alive3 #b3i4 ,i know thy tribulation and thy poverty3 but thou art rich4 ,and thou art blasphemed by them that say they are ,jews and are not1 but are the synagogue of ,satan4 #b3aj4 ,fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer4 ,behold1 the devil will cast some of you into prison1 that you may be tried3 and you shall have tribulation ten days4 ,be thou faithful unto death3 and ,i will give thee the crown of life4 #b3aa4 ,he that hath an ear1 let him hear what the ,spirit saith to the churches3 ,he that shall overcome shall not be hurt by the second death4 #b3ab4 ,and to the angel of the church of ,pergamus write3 ,these things saith he that hath the sharp two-edged sword3 #b3ac4 ,i know where thou dwellest1 where the seat of ,satan is4 ,and thou holdest fast my name and hast not denied my faith4 ,even in those days when ,antipas was my faithful witness1 who was slain among you1 where ,satan dwelleth4 #b3ad4 ,but ,i have against thee a few things3 because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of ,balaam who taught ,balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of ,israel1 to eat and to commit fornication4 #b3ae4 ,so hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the ,nicolaites4 #b3af4 ,in like manner do penance4 ,if not1 ,i will come to thee quickly and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth4 #b3ag4 ,he that hath an ear1 let him hear what the ,spirit saith to the churches3 ,to him that overcometh ,i will give the hidden manna and will give him a white counter3 and in the counter1 a new name written1 which no man knoweth but he that receiveth it4 #b3ah4 ,and to the angel of the church of ,thyatira write3 ,these things saith the ,son of ,god1 who hath his eyes like to a flame of fire and his feet like to fine brass4 #b3ai4 ,i know thy works and thy faith and thy charity and thy ministry and thy patience and thy last works1 which are more than the former4 #b3bj4 ,but ,i have against thee a few things3 because thou sufferest the woman ,jezabel1 who calleth herself a prophetess1 to teach and to seduce my servants1 to commit fornication and to eat of things sacrificed to idols4 #b3ba4 ,and ,i gave her a time that she might do penance3 and she will not repent of her fornication4 #b3bb4 ,behold1 ,i will cast her into a bed3 and they that commit adultery with her shall be in very great tribulation1 except they do penance from their deeds1 #b3bc4 ,and ,i will kill her children with death3 and all the churches shall know that ,i am he that searcheth the reins and hearts4 ,and ,i will give to every one of you according to your works4 ,but to you ,i say1 #b3bd4 ,and to the rest who are at ,thyatira3 ,whosoever have not this doctrine and who have not known the depths of ,satan1 as they say3 ,i will not put upon you any other burthen4 #b3be4 ,yet that which you have1 hold fast till ,i come4 #b3bf4 ,and he that shall overcome and keep my words unto the end1 ,i will give him power over the nations4 ,power over the nations444 ,this shews1 that the saints1 who are with ,christ our ,lord in heaven1 receive power from him to preside over nations and provinces1 as patrons2 and shall come with him at the end of the world to execute his will against those who have not kept his commandments4 #b3bg4 ,and he shall rule them with a rod of iron3 and as the vessel of a potter they shall be broken3 #b3bh4 ,as ,i also have received of my ,father4 ,and ,i will give him the morning star4 #b3bi4 ,he that hath an ear1 let him hear what the ,spirit saith to the churches4 ,apocalypse ,chapter #c ,directions what to write to ,sardis1 ,philadelphia and ,laodicea4 #c3a4 ,and to the angel of the church of ,sardis write3 ,these things saith he that hath the seven spirits of ,god and the seven stars3 ,i know thy works1 and that thou hast the name of being alive4 ,and thou art dead4 #c3b4 ,be watchful and strengthen the things that remain1 which are ready to die4 ,for ,i find not thy works full before my ,god4 #c3c4 ,have in mind therefore in what manner thou hast received and heard3 and observe and do penance3 ,if then thou shalt not watch1 ,i will come to thee as a thief3 and thou shalt not know at what hour ,i will come to thee4 #c3d4 ,but thou hast a few names in ,sardis which have not defiled their garments3 and they shall walk with me in white1 because they are worthy4 #c3e4 ,he that shall overcome shall thus be clothed in white garments3 and ,i will not blot out his name out of the book of life4 ,and ,i will confess his name before my ,father and before his angels4 #c3f4 ,he that hath an ear1 let him hear what the ,spirit saith to the churches4 #c3g4 ,and to the angel of the church of ,philadelphia write3 ,these things saith the ,holy ,one and the true one1 he that hath the key of ,david1 he that openeth and no man shutteth1 shutteth and no man openeth3 #c3h4 ,i know thy works4 ,behold1 ,i have given before thee a door opened1 which no man can shut3 because thou hast a little strength and hast kept my word and hast not denied my name4 #c3i4 ,behold1 ,i will bring of the synagogue of ,satan1 who say they are ,jews and are not1 but do lie4 ,behold1 ,i will make them to come and adore before thy feet4 ,and they shall know that ,i have loved thee4 #c3aj4 ,because thou hast kept the word of my patience1 ,i will also keep thee from the hour of temptation1 which shall come upon the whole world to try them that dwell upon the earth4 #c3aa4 ,behold1 ,i come quickly3 hold fast that which thou hast1 that no man take thy crown4 #c3ab4 ,he that shall overcome1 ,i will make him a pillar in the temple of my ,god3 and he shall go out no more4 ,and ,i will write upon him the name of my ,god and the name of the city of my ,god1 the new ,jerusalem1 which cometh down out of heaven from my ,god1 and my new name4 #c3ac4 ,he that hath an ear1 let him hear what the ,spirit saith to the churches4 #c3ad4 ,and to the angel of the church of ,laodicea write3 ,these things saith the ,amen1 the faithful and true witness1 who is the beginning of the creation of ,god3 ,the ,amen444 that is1 the true one1 the ,truth itself2 the ,word and ,son of ,god4 ,the beginning1 'px444 that is1 the principle1 the source1 and the efficient cause of the whole creation4 #c3ae4 ,i know thy works1 that thou art neither cold nor hot4 ,i would thou wert cold or hot4 #c3af4 ,but because thou art lukewarm and neither cold nor hot1 ,i will begin to vomit thee out of my mouth4 #c3ag4 ,because thou sayest3 ,i am rich and made wealthy and have need of nothing3 and knowest not that thou art wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked4 #c3ah4 ,i counsel thee to buy of me gold1 fire tried1 that thou mayest be made rich and mayest be clothed in white garments3 and that the shame of thy nakedness may not appear4 ,and anoint thy eyes with eyesalve1 that thou mayest see4 #c3ai4 ,such as ,i love1 ,i rebuke and chastise4 ,be zealous therefore and do penance4 #c3bj4 ,behold1 ,i stand at the gate and knock4 ,if any man shall hear my voice and open to me the door1 ,i will come in to him and will sup with him3 and he with me4 #c3ba4 ,to him that shall overcome1 ,i will give to sit with me in my throne3 as ,i also have overcome and am set down with my ,father in his throne4 #c3bb4 ,he that hath an ear1 let him hear what the ,spirit saith to the churches4 ,apocalypse ,chapter #d ,the vision of the throne of ,god1 the twenty-four ancients and the four living creatures4 #d3a4 ,aftengs which must be done hereafter4 #d3b4 ,and immediately ,i was in the spirit4 ,and behold1 there was a throne set in heaven1 and upon the throne one sitting4 #d3c4 ,and he that sat was to the sight like the jasper and the sardine stone4 ,and there was a rainbow round about the throne1 in sight like unto an emerald4 #d3d4 ,and round about the throne were four and twenty seats3 and upon the seats1 four and twenty ancients sitting1 clothed in white garments4 ,and on their heads were crowns of gold4 #d3e4 ,and from the throne proceeded lightnings and voices and thunders4 ,and there were seven lamps burning before the throne1 which are the seven ,spirits of ,god4 #d3f4 ,and in the sight of the throne was1 as it were1 a sea of glass like to crystal3 and in the midst of the throne1 and round about the throne1 were four living creatures1 full of eyes before and behind4 #d3g4 ,and the first living creature was like a lion3 and the second living creature like a calf3 and the third living creature1 having the face1 as it were1 of a man3 and the fourth living creature was like an eagle flying4 #d3h4 ,and the four living creatures had each of them six wings3 and round about and within they are full of eyes4 ,and they rested not day and night1 saying3 ,holy1 ,holy1 ,holy1 ,lord ,god ,almighty1 who was and who is and who is to come4 #d3i4 ,and when those living creatures gave glory and honour and benediction to him that sitteth on the throne1 who liveth for ever and ever3 #d3aj4 ,the four and twenty ancients fell down before him that sitteth on the throne and adored him that liveth for ever and ever and cast their crowns before the throne1 saying3 #d3aa4 ,thou art worthy1 ,o ,lord our ,god1 to receive glory and honour and power4 ,because thou hast created all things3 and for thy will they were and have been created4 ,apocalypse ,chapter #e ,the book sealed with seven seals is opened by the ,lamb1 who thereupon receives adoration and praise from all4 #e3a4 ,and ,i saw1 in the right hand of him that sat on the throne1 a book1 written within and without1 sealed with seven seals4 #e3b4 ,and ,i saw a strong angel1 proclaiming with a loud voice3 ,who is worthy to open the book and to loose the seals thereof8 #e3c4 ,and no man was able1 neither in heaven nor on earth nor under the earth1 to open the book1 nor to look on it4 #e3d4 ,and ,i wept much1 because no man was found worthy to open the book1 nor to see it4 #e3e4 ,and one of the ancients said to me3 ,weep not3 behold the lion of the tribe of ,juda1 the root of ,david1 hath prevailed to open the book and to loose the seven seals thereof4 #e3f4 ,and ,i saw3 and behold in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures and in the midst of the ancients1 a ,lamb standing1 as it were slain1 having seven horns and seven eyes3 which are the seven ,spirits of ,god1 sent forth into all the earth4 #e3g4 ,and he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat on the throne4 #e3h4 ,and when he had opened the book1 the four living creatures and the four and twenty ancients fell down before the ,lamb1 having every one of them harps and golden vials full of odours1 which are the prayers of saints4 ,the prayers of saints444 ,here we see that the saints in heaven offer up to ,christ the prayers of the faithful upon earth4 #e3i4 ,and they sung a new canticle1 saying3 ,thou art worthy1 ,o ,lord1 to take the book and to open the seals thereof3 because thou wast slain and hast redeemed us to ,god1 in thy blood1 out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation3 #e3aj4 ,and hast made us to our ,god a kingdom and priests1 and we shall reign on the earth4 #e3aa4 ,and ,i beheld1 and ,i heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the living creatures and the ancients 7and the number of them was thousands of thousands71 #e3ab4 ,saying with a loud voice3 ,the ,lamb that was slain is worthy to receive power and divinity and wisdom and strength and honour and glory and benediction4 #e3ac4 ,and every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth1 and such as are in the sea1 and all that are in them1 ,i heard all saying3 ,to him that sitteth on the throne and to the ,lamb1 benediction and honour and glory and power1 for ever and ever4 #e3ad4 ,and the four living creatures said3 ,amen4 ,and the four and twenty ancients fell down on their faces and adored him that liveth for ever and ever4 ,apocalypse ,chapter #f ,what followed upon opening six of the seals4 #f3a4 ,and ,i saw that the ,lamb had opened one of the seven seals3 and ,i heard one of the four living creatures1 as it were the voice of thunder1 saying3 ,come and see4 #f3b4 ,and ,i saw3 and behold a white horse1 and he that sat on him had a bow1 and there was a crown given him1 and he went forth conquering that he might conquer4 ,white horse444 ,he that sitteth on the white horse is ,christ1 going forth to subdue the world by his gospel4 ,the other horses that follow represent the judgments and punishment that were to fall on the enemies of ,christ and his church4 ,the red horse signifies war2 the black horse1 famine2 and the pale horse 7which has ,death for its rider71 plagues or pestilence4 #f3c4 ,and when he had opened the second seal1 ,i heard the second living creature saying3 ,come and see4 #f3d4 ,and there went out another horse that was red4 ,and to him that sat thereon1 it was given that he should take peace from the earth3 and that they should kill one another4 ,and a great sword was given to him4 #f3e4 ,and when he had opened the third seal1 ,i heard the third living creature saying3 ,come and see4 ,and behold a black horse4 ,and he that sat on him had a pair of scales in his hand4 #f3f4 ,and ,i heard1 as it were a voice in the midst of the four living creatures1 saying3 ,two pounds of wheat for a penny1 and thrice two pounds of barley for a penny3 and see thou hurt not the wine and the oil4 #f3g4 ,and when he had opened the fourth seal1 ,i heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying3 ,come and see4 #f3h4 ,and behold a pale horse3 and he that sat upon him1 his name was ,death4 ,and hell followed him4 ,and power was given to him over the four parts of the earth1 to kill with sword1 with famine and with death and with the beasts of the earth4 #f3i4 ,and when he had opened the fifth seal1 ,i saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of ,god and for the testimony which they held4 ,under the altar444 ,christ1 as man1 is this altar1 under which the souls of the martyrs live in heaven1 as their bodies are here deposited under our altars4 #f3aj4 ,and they cried with a loud voice1 saying3 ,how long1 ,o ,lord 7,holy and ,true71 dost thou not judge and revenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth8 ,revenge our blood444 ,they ask not this out of hatred to their enemies1 but out of zeal for the glory of ,god1 and a desire that the ,lord would accelerate the general judgment1 and the complete beatitude of all his elect4 #f3aa4 ,and white robes were given to every one of them one2 ,and it was said to them that they should rest for a little time till their fellow servants and their brethren1 who are to be slain even as they1 should be filled up4 #f3ab4 ,and ,i saw1 when he had opened the sixth seal3 and behold there was a great earthquake4 ,and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair3 and the whole moon became as blood4 #f3ac4 ,and the stars from heaven fell upon the earth1 as the fig tree casteth its green figs when it is shaken by a great wind4 #f3ad4 ,and the heaven departed as a book folded up4 ,and every mountain1 and the islands1 were moved out of their places4 #f3ae4 ,and the kings of the earth and the princes and tribunes and the rich and the strong and every bondman and every freeman hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of mountains3 #f3af4 ,and they say to the mountains and the rocks3 ,fall upon us and hide us from the face of him that sitteth upon the throne and from the wrath of the ,lamb4 #f3ag4 ,for the great day of their wrath is come4 ,and who shall be able to stand8 ,apocalypse ,chapter #g ,the number of them that were marked with the seal of the living ,god and clothed in white robes4 #g3a4 ,after these things1 ,i saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth1 holding the four winds of the earth1 that they should not blow upon the earth nor upon the sea nor on any tree4 #g3b4 ,and ,i saw another angel ascending from the rising of the sun1 having the sign of the living ,god4 ,and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea1 #g3c4 ,saying3 ,hurt not the earth nor the sea nor the trees1 till we sign the servants of our ,god in their foreheads4 #g3d4 ,and ,i heard the number of them that were signed4 ,an hundred forty- four thousand were signed1 of every tribe of the children of ,israel4 #g3e4 ,of the tribe of ,juda1 twelve thousand signed3 ,of the tribe of ,ruben1 twelve thousand signed3 ,of the tribe of ,gad1 twelve thousand signed3 #g3f4 ,of the tribe of ,aser1 twelve thousand signed3 ,of the tribe of ,nephthali1 twelve thousand signed3 ,of the tribe of ,manasses1 twelve thousand signed3 #g3g4 ,of the tribe of ,simeon1 twelve thousand signed3 ,of the tribe of ,levi1 twelve thousand signed3 ,of the tribe of ,issachar1 twelve thousand signed3 #g3h4 ,of the tribe of ,zabulon1 twelve thousand signed3 ,of the tribe of ,joseph1 twelve thousand signed3 ,of the tribe of ,benjamin1 twelve thousand signed4 #g3i4 ,after this1 ,i saw a great multitude1 which no man could number1 of all nations and tribes and peoples and tongues1 standing before the throne and in sight of the ,lamb1 clothed with white robes1 and palms in their hands4 #g3aj4 ,and they cried with a loud voice1 saying3 ,salvation to our ,god1 who sitteth upon the throne and to the ,lamb4 #g3aa4 ,and all the angels stood round about the throne and the ancients and the four living creatures4 ,and they fell down before the throne upon their faces and adored ,god1 #g3ab4 ,saying3 ,amen4 ,benediction and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving1 honour and power and strength1 to our ,god1 for ever and ever4 ,amen4 #g3ac4 ,and one of the ancients answered and said to me3 ,these that are clothed in white robes1 who are they8 ,and whence came they8 #g3ad4 ,and ,i said to him3 ,my ,lord1 thou knowest4 ,and he said to me3 ,these are they who are come out of great tribulation and have washed their robes and have made them white in the blood of the ,lamb4 #g3ae4 ,therefore1 they are before the throne of ,god3 and they serve him day and night in his temple4 ,and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell over them4 #g3af4 ,they shall no more hunger nor thirst3 neither shall the sun fall on them1 nor any heat4 #g3ag4 ,for the ,lamb1 which is in the midst of the throne1 shall rule them and shall lead them to the fountains of the waters of life3 and ,god shall wipe away all tears from their eyes4 ,apocalypse ,chapter #h ,the seventh seal is opened4 ,the angels with the seven trumpets4 #h3a4 ,and when he had opened the seventh seal1 there was silence in heaven1 as it were for half an hour4 #h3b4 ,and ,i saw seven angels standing in the presence of ,god3 and there were given to them seven trumpets4 #h3c4 ,and another angel came and stood before the altar1 having a golden censer3 and there was given to him much incense1 that he should offer of the prayers of all saints1 upon the golden altar which is before the throne of ,god4 #h3d4 ,and the smoke of the incense of the prayers of the saints ascended up before ,god from the hand of the angel4 #h3e4 ,and the angel took the censer and filled it with the fire of the altar and cast it on the earth3 and there were thunders and voices and lightnings and a great earthquake4 #h3f4 ,and the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound the trumpet4 #h3g4 ,and the first angel sounded the trumpet3 and there followed hail and fire1 mingled with blood3 and it was cast on the earth4 ,and the third part of the earth was burnt up3 and the third part of the trees was burnt up3 and all green grass was burnt up4 #h3h4 ,and the second angel sounded the trumpet3 and1 as it were1 a great mountain1 burning with fire1 was cast into the sea4 ,and the third part of the sea became blood4 #h3i4 ,and the third part of those creatures died which had life in the sea3 and the third part of the ships was destroyed4 #h3aj4 ,and the third angel sounded the trumpet3 and a great star fell from heaven1 burning as it were a torch4 ,and it fell on the third part of the rivers and upon the fountains of waters3 #h3aa4 ,and the name of the star is called ,wormwood4 ,and the third part of the waters became wormwood4 ,and many men died of the waters1 because they were made bitter4 #h3ab4 ,and the fourth angel sounded the trumpet3 and the third part of the sun was smitten1 and the third part of the moon1 and the third part of the stars1 so that the third part of them was darkened4 ,and the day did not shine for a third part of it3 and the night in like manner4 #h3ac4 ,and ,i beheld3 and heard the voice of one eagle flying through the midst of heaven1 saying with a loud voice3 ,woe1 ,woe1 ,woe to the inhabitants of the earth1 by reason of the rest of the voices of the three angels1 who are yet to sound the trumpet6 ,apocalypse ,chapter #i ,locusts come forth from the bottomless pit4 ,the vision of the army of horsemen4 #i3a4 ,and the fifth angel sounded the trumpet3 and ,i saw a star fall from heaven upon the earth4 ,and there was given to him the key of the bottomless pit4 ,a star full444 ,this may mean the fall and apostasy of great and learned men from the true faith4 ,or a whole nation falling into error and separating from the church1 not having the sign of ,god in their foreheads4 ,and there was given to him the key of the bottomless pit444 ,that is1 to the angel1 not to the fallen star4 ,to this angel was given the power1 which is here signified by a key1 of opening hell4 #i3b4 ,and he opened the bottomless pit3 and the smoke of the pit arose1 as the smoke of a great furnace4 ,and the sun and the air were darkened with the smoke of the pit4 #i3c4 ,and from the smoke of the pit there came out locusts upon the earth4 ,and power was given to them1 as the scorpions of the earth have power4 ,there came out locusts444 ,these may be devils in ,antichrist's time1 having the appearance of locusts1 but large and monstrous1 as here described4 ,or they may be real locusts1 but of an extraordinary size and monstrous shape1 such as were never before seen on earth1 sent to torment those who have not the sign 7or seal7 of ,god on their foreheads4 ,some commentators by these locusts understand heretics1 and especially those heretics1 that sprung from ,jews1 and with them denied the divinity of ,jesus ,christ2 as ,theodotus1 ,praxeas1 ,noetus1 ,paul of ,samosata1 ,sabellius1 ,arius1 etc4 ,these were great enemies of the ,christian religion2 they tormented and infected the souls of men1 stinging them like scorpions1 with the poison of their heresies4 ,others have explained these locusts1 and other animals1 mentioned in different places throughout this sacred and mystical book1 in a most absurd1 fanciful1 and ridiculous manner2 they make ,abaddon the ,pope1 and the locusts to be friars mendicant1 etc4 ,here it is thought proper1 not to enter into any controversy upon that subject1 as the inventors of these fancies have been already answered1 and fully refuted by many controvertists3 besides1 those who might be inposed on by such chimerical writers1 are in these days much better informed4 #i3d4 ,and it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth nor any green thing nor any tree3 but only the men who have not the sign of ,god on their foreheads4 #i3e4 ,and it was given unto them that they should not kill them3 but that they should torment them five months4 ,and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion when he striketh a man4 #i3f4 ,and in those days1 men shall seek death and shall not find it4 ,and they shall desire to die3 and death shall fly from them4 #i3g4 ,and the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle4 ,and on their heads were1 as it were1 crowns like gold3 and their faces were as the faces of men4 #i3h4 ,and they had hair as the hair of women3 and their teeth were as lions4 #i3i4 ,and they had breastplates as breastplates of iron3 and the noise of their wings was as the noise of chariots and many horses running to battle4 #i3aj4 ,and they had tails like to scorpions3 and there were stings in their tails4 ,and their power was to hurt men1 five months4 ,and they had over them #i3aa4 ,a king1 the angel of the bottomless pit 7whose name in ,hebrew is ,abaddon and in ,greek ,apollyon1 in ,latin ,exterminans74 #i3ab4 ,one woe is past3 and behold there come yet two woes more hereafter4 #i3ac4 ,and the sixth angel sounded the trumpet3 and ,i heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before the eyes of ,god1 #i3ad4 ,saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet3 ,loose the four angels who are bound in the great river ,euphrates4 #i3ae4 ,and the four angels were loosed1 who were prepared for an hour1 and a day1 and a month1 and a year3 for to kill the third part of men4 #i3af4 ,and the number of the army of horsemen was twenty thousand times ten thousand4 ,and ,i heard the number of them4 #i3ag4 ,and thus ,i saw the horses in the vision4 ,and they that sat on them had breastplates of fire and of hyacinth and of brimstone4 ,and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions3 and from their mouths proceeded fire and smoke and brimstone4 #i3ah4 ,and by these three plagues was slain the third part of men1 by the fire and by the smoke and by the brimstone which issued out of their mouths4 #i3ai4 ,for the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails4 ,for1 their tails are like to serpents and have heads3 and with them they hurt4 #i3bj4 ,and the rest of the men1 who were not slain by these plagues1 did not do penance from the works of their hands1 that they should not adore devils and idols of gold and silver and brass and stone and wood1 which neither can see nor hear nor walk3 #i3ba4 ,neither did they penance from their murders nor from their sorceries nor from their fornication nor from their thefts4 ,apocalypse ,chapter #aj ,the cry of a mighty angel4 ,he gives ,john a book to eat4 #aj3a4 ,and ,i saw another mighty angel come down from heaven1 clothed with a cloud4 ,and a rainbow was on his head3 and his face1 as the sun1 and his feet as pillars of fire4 #aj3b4 ,and he had in his hand a little book1 open4 ,and he set his right foot upon the sea1 and his left foot upon the earth4 #aj3c4 ,and he cried with a loud voice as when a lion roareth4 ,and when he had cried1 seven thunders uttered their voices4 #aj3d4 ,and when the seven thunders had uttered their voices1 ,i was about to write4 ,and ,i heard a voice from heaven saying to me3 ,seal up the things which the seven thunders have spoken4 ,and write them not4 #aj3e4 ,and the angel whom ,i saw standing upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven4 #aj3f4 ,and he swore by him that liveth for ever and ever1 who created heaven and the things which are therein1 and the earth and the things which are in it1 and the sea and the things which are therein3 ,that time shall be no longer4 #aj3g4 ,but in the days of the voice of the seventh angel1 when he shall begin to sound the trumpet1 the mystery of ,god shall be finished1 as he hath declared by his servants the prophets4 ,declared444 literally evangelized1 to signify the good tidings1 agreeable to the ,gospel1 of the final victory of ,christ1 and of that eternal life1 which should be the reward of the temporal sufferings of the martyrs and faithful servants of ,god4 #aj3h4 ,and ,i heard a voice from heaven1 again speaking to me and saying3 ,go and take the book that is open1 from the hand of the angel who standeth upon the sea and upon the earth4 #aj3i4 ,and ,i went to the angel1 saying unto him that he should give me the book4 ,and he said to me3 ,take the book and eat it up4 ,and it shall make thy belly bitter3 but in thy mouth it shall be sweet as honey4 #aj3aj4 ,and ,i took the book from the hand of the angel and ate it up3 and it was in my mouth1 sweet as honey4 ,and when ,i had eaten it1 my belly was bitter4 #aj3aa4 ,and he said to me3 ,thou must prophesy again to many nations and peoples and tongues and kings4 ,apocalypse ,chapter #aa ,he is ordered to measure the temple4 ,the two witnesses4 #aa3a4 ,and there was given me a reed1 like unto a rod4 ,and it was said to me3 ,arise1 and measure the temple of ,god and the altar and them that adore therein4 #aa3b4 ,but the court which is without the temple1 cast out and measure it not3 because it is given unto the ,gentiles4 ,and the holy city they shall tread under foot1 two and forty months3 #aa3c4 ,and ,i will give unto my two witnesses3 and they shall prophesy1 a thousand two hundred sixty days1 clothed in sackcloth4 ,my two witnesses444 ,it is commonly understood of ,henoch and ,elias4 #aa3d4 ,these are the two olive trees and the two candlesticks that stand before the ,lord of the earth4 #aa3e4 ,and if any man will hurt them1 fire shall come out of their mouths and shall devour their enemies4 ,and if any man will hurt them1 in this manner must he be slain4 #aa3f4 ,these have power to shut heaven1 that it rain not in the days of their prophecy3 ,and they have power over waters1 to turn them into blood and to strike the earth with all plagues1 as often as they will4 #aa3g4 ,and when they shall have finished their testimony1 the beast that ascendeth out of the abyss shall make war against them and shall overcome them and kill them4 #aa3h4 ,and their bodies shall lie in the streets of the great city which is called spiritually1 ,sodom and ,egypt3 where their ,lord also was crucified4 #aa3i4 ,and they of the tribes and peoples and tongues and nations shall see their bodies for three days and a half3 and they shall not suffer their bodies to be laid in sepulchres4 #aa3aj4 ,and they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them and make merry3 and shall send gifts one to another1 because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt upon the earth4 #aa3aa4 ,and after three days and a half1 the spirit of life from ,god entered into them4 ,and they stood upon their feet3 and great fear fell upon them that saw them4 #aa3ab4 ,and they heard a great voice from heaven1 saying to them3 ,come up hither4 ,and they went up to heaven in a cloud3 and their enemies saw them4 #aa3ac4 ,and at that hour there was made a great earthquake3 and the tenth part of the city fell4 ,and there were slain in the earthquake1 names of men1 seven thousand3 and the rest were cast into a fear and gave glory to the ,god of heaven4 #aa3ad4 ,the second woe is past3 and behold the third woe will come quickly4 #aa3ae4 ,and the seventh angel sounded the trumpet3 and there were great voices in heaven1 saying3 ,the kingdom of this world is become our ,lord's and his ,christ's1 and he shall reign for ever and ever4 ,amen4 #aa3af4 ,and the four and twenty ancients who sit on their seats in the sight of ,god1 fell on their faces and adored ,god1 saying3 #aa3ag4 ,we give thee thanks1 ,o ,lord ,god ,almighty1 who art and who wast and who art to come3 because thou hast taken to thee thy great power1 and thou hast reigned4 #aa3ah4 ,and the nations were angry3 and thy wrath is come4 ,and the time of the dead1 that they should be judged and that thou shouldest render reward to thy servants the prophets and the saints1 and to them that fear thy name1 little and great3 and shouldest destroy them who have corrupted the earth4 #aa3ai4 ,and the temple of ,god was opened in heaven3 and the ark of his testament was seen in his temple4 ,and there were lightnings and voices and an earthquake and great hail4 ,apocalypse ,chapter #ab ,the vision of the woman clothed with the sun and of the great dragon her persecutor4 #ab3a4 ,and a great sign appeared in heaven3 ,a woman clothed with the sun1 and the moon under her feet1 and on her head a crown of twelve stars4 ,a woman444 ,the church of ,god4 ,it may also1 by allusion1 be applied to our blessed ,lady4 ,the church is clothed with the sun1 that is1 with ,christ3 she hath the moon1 that is1 the changeable things of the world1 under her feet3 and the twelve stars with which she is crowned1 are the twelve apostles3 she is in labour and pain1 whilst she brings forth her children1 and ,christ in them1 in the midst of afflictions and persecutions4 #ab3b4 ,and being with child1 she cried travailing in birth3 and was in pain to be delivered4 #ab3c4 ,and there was seen another sign in heaven4 ,and behold a great red dragon1 having seven heads and ten horns and on his heads seven diadems4 #ab3d4 ,and his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven and cast them to the earth4 ,and the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to be delivered3 that1 when she should be delivered1 he might devour her son4 #ab3e4 ,and she brought forth a man child1 who was to rule all nations with an iron rod4 ,and her son was taken up to ,god and to his throne4 #ab3f4 ,and the woman fled into the wilderness1 where she had a place prepared by ,god1 that there they should feed her1 a thousand two hundred sixty days4 #ab3g4 ,and there was a great battle in heaven3 ,michael and his angels fought with the dragon1 and the dragon fought1 and his angels4 #ab3h4 ,and they prevailed not3 neither was their place found any more in heaven4 #ab3i4 ,and that great dragon was cast out1 that old serpent1 who is called the devil and ,satan1 who seduceth the whole world4 ,and he was cast unto the earth3 and his angels were thrown down with him4 #ab3aj4 ,and ,i heard a loud voice in heaven1 saying3 ,now is come salvation and strength and the kingdom of our ,god and the power of his ,christ3 because the accuser of our brethren is cast forth1 who accused them before our ,god day and night4 #ab3aa4 ,and they overcame him by the blood of the ,lamb and by the word of the testimony3 and they loved not their lives unto death4 #ab3ab4 ,therefore1 rejoice1 ,o heavens1 and you that dwell therein4 ,woe to the earth and to the sea1 because the devil is come down unto you1 having great wrath1 knowing that he hath but a short time4 #ab3ac4 ,and when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth1 he persecuted the woman who brought forth the man child4 #ab3ad4 ,and there were given to the woman two wings of a great eagle1 that she might fly into the desert1 unto her place1 where she is nourished for a time and times1 and half a time1 from the face of the serpent4 #ab3ae4 ,and the serpent cast out of his mouth1 after the woman1 water1 as it were a river3 that he might cause her to be carried away by the river4 #ab3af4 ,and the earth helped the woman3 and the earth opened her mouth and swallowed up the river which the dragon cast out of his mouth4 #ab3ag4 ,and the dragon was angry against the woman3 and went to make war with the rest of her seed1 who keep the commandments of ,god and have the testimony of ,jesus ,christ4 #ab3ah4 ,and he stood upon the sand of the sea4 ,apocalypse ,chapter #ac ,of the beast with seven heads and of a second beast4 #ac3a4 ,and ,i saw a beast coming up out the sea1 having seven heads and ten horns3 and upon his horns1 ten diadems3 and upon his heads1 names of blasphemy4 ,a beast444 ,this first beast with seven heads and ten horns1 is probably the whole company of infidels1 enemies and persecutors of the people of ,god1 from the beginning to the end of the world4 ,the seven heads are seven kings1 that is1 seven principal kingdoms or empires1 which have exercised1 or shall exercise1 tyrannical power over the people of ,god2 of these1 five were then fallen1 viz43 the ,egyptian1 ,assyrian1 ,chaldean1 ,persian1 and ,grecian monarchies3 one was present1 viz41 the empire of ,rome3 and the seventh and chiefest was to come1 viz41 the great ,antichrist and his empire4 ,the ten horns may be understood of ten lesser persecutors4 #ac3b4 ,and the beast which ,i saw was like to a leopard3 and his feet were as the feet of a bear1 and his mouth as the mouth of a lion4 ,and the dragon gave him his own strength and great power4 #ac3c4 ,and ,i saw one of his heads as it were slain to death3 and his death's wound was healed4 ,and all the earth was in admiration after the beast4 ,one of his heads1 etc444 ,some understand this of the mortal wound1 which the idolatry of the ,roman empire 7signified by the sixth head7 received from ,constantine2 which was1 as it were1 healed again by ,julian the ,apostate4 #ac3d4 ,and they adored the dragon which gave power to the beast4 ,and they adored the beast1 saying3 ,who is like to the beast8 ,and who shall be able to fight with him8 #ac3e4 ,and there was given to him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies3 and power was given to him to do1 two and forty months4 #ac3f4 ,and he opened his mouth unto blasphemies against ,god1 to blaspheme his name and his tabernacle and them that dwell in heaven4 ,his tabernacle1 etc444 ,that is1 his church and his saints4 #ac3g4 ,and it was given unto him to make war with the saints and to overcome them4 ,and power was given him over every tribe and people and tongue and nation4 #ac3h4 ,and all that dwell upon the earth adored him1 whose names are not written in the book of life of the ,lamb which was slain from the beginning of the world4 ,slain from the beginning1 etc444 ,in the foreknowledge of ,god2 and inasmuch as all mercy and grace1 from the beginning1 was given in view of his death and passion4 #ac3i4 ,if any man have an ear1 let him hear4 #ac3aj4 ,he that shall lead into captivity shall go into captivity3 he that shall kill by the sword must be killed by the sword4 ,here is the patience and the faith of the saints4 #ac3aa4 ,and ,i saw another beast coming up out of the earth3 and he had two horns1 like a lamb3 and he spoke as a dragon4 ,another beast444 ,this second beast with two horns1 may be understood of the heathenish priests and magicians2 the principal promoters both of idolatry and persecution4 #ac3ab4 ,and he executed all the power of the former beast in his sight4 ,and he caused the earth and them that dwell therein to adore the first beast1 whose wound to death was healed4 #ac3ac4 ,and he did great signs1 so that he made also fire to come down from heaven unto the earth1 in the sight of men4 #ac3ad4 ,and he seduced them that dwell on the earth1 for the signs which were given him to do in the sight of the beast3 saying to them that dwell on the earth that they should make the image of the beast which had the wound by the sword and lived4 #ac3ae4 ,and it was given him to give life to the image of the beast3 and that the image of the beast should speak3 and should cause that whosoever will not adore the image of the beast should be slain4 #ac3af4 ,and he shall make all1 both little and great1 rich and poor1 freemen and bondmen1 to have a character in their right hand or on their foreheads3 #ac3ag4 ,and that no man might buy or sell1 but he that hath the character1 or the name of the beast1 or the number of his name4 #ac3ah4 ,here is wisdom4 ,he that hath understanding1 let him count the number of the beast4 ,for it is the number of a man3 and the number of him is six hundred sixty-six4 ,six hundred sixty-six444 ,the numeral letters of his name shall make up this number4 ,apocalypse ,chapter #ad ,of the ,lamb and of the virgins that follow him4 ,of the judgments that shall fall upon the wicked4 #ad3a4 ,and ,i beheld3 and lo a ,lamb stood upon mount ,sion1 and with him an hundred forty-four thousand1 having his name and the name of his ,father written on their foreheads4 #ad3b4 ,and ,i heard a voice from heaven1 as the noise of many waters and as the voice of great thunder4 ,and the voice which ,i heard was as the voice of harpers1 harping on their harps4 #ad3c4 ,and they sung as it were a new canticle1 before the throne and before the four living creatures and the ancients3 and no man could say the canticle1 but those hundred forty-four thousand who were purchased from the earth4 #ad3d4 ,these are they who were not defiled with women3 for they are virgins4 ,these follow the ,lamb whithersoever he goeth4 ,these were purchased from among men1 the firstfruits to ,god and to the ,lamb4 #ad3e4 ,and in their mouth there was found no lie3 for they are without spot before the throne of ,god4 #ad3f4 ,and ,i saw another angel flying through the midst of heaven1 having the eternal gospel1 to preach unto them that sit upon the earth and over every nation and tribe and tongue and people3 #ad3g4 ,saying with a loud voice3 ,fear the ,lord and give him honour1 because the hour of his judgment is come4 ,and adore ye him that made heaven and earth1 the sea and the fountains of waters4 #ad3h4 ,and another angel followed1 saying3 ,that great ,babylon is fallen1 is fallen2 which made all nations to drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication4 ,babylon444 ,by ,babylon may be very probably signified all the wicked world in general1 which ,god will punish1 and destroy after the short time of this mortal life3 or it may signify every great city wherein enormous sins and abominations are daily committed2 and that when the measure of its iniquities is full1 the punishments due to its crimes are poured on it4 ,it may also be some city of the description in the text1 that will exist1 and be destroyed1 as here described1 towards the end of the world4 #ad3i4 ,and the third angel followed them1 saying with a loud voice3 ,if any man shall adore the beast and his image and receive his character in his forehead or in his hand1 #ad3aj4 ,he also shall drink of the wine of the wrath of ,god1 which is mingled with pure wine in the cup of his wrath3 and shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the sight of the holy angels and in the sight of the ,lamb4 #ad3aa4 ,and the smoke of their torments1 shall ascend up for ever and ever3 neither have they rest day nor night1 who have adored the beast and his image and whoever receiveth the character of his name4 #ad3ab4 ,here is the patience of the saints1 who keep the commandments of ,god and the faith of ,jesus4 #ad3ac4 ,and ,i heard a voice from heaven1 saying to me3 ,write3 ,blessed are the dead who die in the ,lord4 ,from henceforth now1 saith the ,spirit1 that they may rest from their labours4 ,for their works follow them4 ,die in the ,lord444 ,it is understood of the martyrs who die for the ,lord4 #ad3ad4 ,and ,i saw3 and behold a white cloud and upon the cloud one sitting like to the ,son of man1 having on his head a crown of gold and in his hand a sharp sickle4 #ad3ae4 ,and another angel came out from the temple1 crying with a loud voice to him that sat upon the cloud3 ,thrust in thy sickle and reap1 because the hour is come to reap4 ,for the harvest of the earth is ripe4 #ad3af4 ,and he that sat on the cloud thrust his sickle into the earth3 and the earth was reaped4 #ad3ag4 ,and another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven1 he also having a sharp sickle4 #ad3ah4 ,and another angel came out from the altar1 who had power over fire4 ,and he cried with a loud voice to him that had the sharp sickle1 saying3 ,thrust in thy sharp sickle and gather the clusters of the vineyard of the earth1 because the grapes thereof are ripe4 #ad3ai4 ,and the angel thrust in his sharp sickle into the earth and gathered the vineyard of the earth and cast it into the great press of the wrath of ,god3 #ad3bj4 ,and the press was trodden without the city1 and blood came out of the press1 up to the horses' bridles1 for a thousand and six hundred furlongs4 ,apocalypse ,chapter #ae ,they that have overcome the beast glorify ,god4 ,of the seven angels with the seven vials4 #ae3a4 ,and ,i saw another sign in heaven1 great and wonderful3 seven angels having the seven last plagues4 ,for in them is filled up the wrath of ,god4 #ae3b4 ,and ,i saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire3 and them that had overcome the beast and his image and the number of his name1 standing on the sea of glass1 having the harps of ,god3 #ae3c4 ,and singing the canticle of ,moses1 the servant of ,god1 and the canticle of the ,lamb1 saying3 ,great and wonderful are thy works1 ,o ,lord ,god ,almighty4 ,just and true are thy ways1 ,o ,king of ages4 #ae3d4 ,who shall not fear thee1 ,o ,lord1 and magnify thy name8 ,for thou only art holy4 ,for all nations shall come and shall adore in thy sight1 because thy judgments are manifest4 #ae3e4 ,and after these things1 ,i looked3 and behold1 the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened4 #ae3f4 ,and the seven angels came out of the temple1 having the seven plagues1 clothed with clean and white linen and girt about the breasts with golden girdles4 #ae3g4 ,and one of the four living creatures gave to the seven angels seven golden vials1 full of the wrath of ,god1 who liveth for ever and ever4 #ae3h4 ,and the temple was filled with smoke from the majesty of ,god and from his power4 ,and no man was able to enter into the temple1 till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled4 ,apocalypse ,chapter #af ,the seven vials are poured out4 ,the plagues that ensue4 #af3a4 ,and ,i heard a great voice out of the temple1 saying to the seven angels3 ,go and pour out the seven vials of the wrath of ,god upon the earth4 #af3b4 ,and the first went and poured out his vial upon the earth4 ,and there fell a sore and grievous wound upon men who had the character of the beast3 and upon them that adored the image thereof4 #af3c4 ,and the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea4 ,and there came blood as it were of a dead man3 and every living soul died in the sea4 #af3d4 ,and the third poured out his vial upon the rivers and the fountains of waters4 ,and there was made blood4 #af3e4 ,and ,i heard the angel of the waters saying3 ,thou art just1 ,o ,lord1 who art and who wast1 the ,holy ,one1 because thou hast judged these things4 #af3f4 ,for they have shed the blood of saints and prophets3 and thou hast given them blood to drink4 ,for they are worthy4 #af3g4 ,and ,i heard another1 from the altar1 saying3 ,yea1 ,o ,lord ,god ,almighty1 true and just are thy judgments4 #af3h4 ,and the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun4 ,and it was given unto him to afflict men with heat and fire4 #af3i4 ,and men were scorched with great heat3 and they blasphemed the name of ,god1 who hath power over these plagues4 ,neither did they penance to give him glory4 #af3aj4 ,and the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast4 ,and his kingdom became dark3 and they gnawed their tongues for pain4 #af3aa4 ,and they blasphemed the ,god of heaven1 because of their pains and wounds3 and did not penance for their works4 #af3ab4 ,and the sixth angel poured out his vial upon that great river ,euphrates and dried up the water thereof1 that a way might be prepared for the kings from the rising of the sun4 #af3ac4 ,and ,i saw from the mouth of the dragon and from the mouth of the beast and from the mouth of the false prophet1 three unclean spirits like frogs4 #af3ad4 ,for they are the spirits of devils1 working signs3 and they go forth unto the kings of the whole earth1 to gather them to battle against the great day of the ,almighty ,god4 #af3ae4 ,behold1 ,i come as a thief4 ,blessed is he that watcheth and keepeth his garments1 lest he walk naked1 and they see his shame4 #af3af4 ,and he shall gather them together into a place which in ,hebrew is called ,armagedon4 ,armagedon444 ,that is1 the hill of robbers4 #af3ag4 ,and the seventh angel poured out his vial upon the air4 ,and there came a great voice out of the temple from the throne1 saying3 ,it is done4 #af3ah4 ,and there were lightnings and voices and thunders3 and there was a great earthquake1 such an one as never had been since men were upon the earth1 such an earthquake1 so great4 #af3ai4 ,and the great city was divided into three parts3 and the cities of the ,gentiles fell4 ,and great ,babylon came in remembrance before ,god1 to give her the cup of the wine of the indignation of his wrath4 #af3bj4 ,and every island fled away3 and the mountains were not found4 #af3ba4 ,and great hail1 like a talent1 came down from heaven upon men3 and men blasphemed ,god1 for the plague of the hail3 because it was exceeding great4 ,apocalypse ,chapter #ag ,the description of the great harlot and of the beast upon which she sits4 #ag3a4 ,and there came one of the seven angels who had the seven vials and spoke with me1 saying3 ,come1 ,i will shew thee the condemnation of the great harlot1 who sitteth upon many waters3 #ag3b4 ,with whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication4 ,and they who inhabit the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her whoredom4 #ag3c4 ,and he took me away in spirit into the desert4 ,and ,i saw a woman sitting upon a scarlet coloured beast1 full of names of blasphemy1 having seven heads and ten horns4 #ag3d4 ,and the woman was clothed round about with purple and scarlet1 and gilt with gold and precious stones and pearls1 having a golden cup in her hand1 full of the abomination and filthiness of her fornication4 #ag3e4 ,and on her forehead a name was written3 ,a mystery3 ,babylon the great1 the mother of the fornications and the abominations of the earth4 ,a mystery444 ,that is1 a secret2 because what follows of the name and title of the great harlot is to be taken in a mystical sense4 ,babylon444 ,either the city of the devil in general2 or1 if this place be to be understood of any particular city1 pagan ,rome1 which then and for three hundred years persecuted the church2 and was the principal seat both of empire and idolatry4 #ag3f4 ,and ,i saw the woman drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of ,jesus4 ,and ,i wondered1 when ,i had seen her1 with great admiration4 #ag3g4 ,and the angel said to me3 ,why dost thou wonder8 ,i will tell thee the mystery of the woman and of the beast which carrieth her1 which hath the seven heads and ten horns4 #ag3h4 ,the beast which thou sawest1 was1 and is not1 and shall come up out of the bottomless pit and go into destruction4 ,and the inhabitants on the earth 7whose names are not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world7 shall wonder1 seeing the beast that was and is not4 ,the beast which thou sawest444 ,this beast which supports ,babylon1 may signify the power of the devil3 which was and is not1 being much limited by the coming of ,christ1 but shall again exert itself under ,antichrist4 ,the seven heads of this beast are seven mountains or empires1 instruments of his tyranny2 of which five were then fallen4 7,see chap4 #ac4a1 and below1 ver4 #aj47 ,the beast itself is said to be the eighth1 and is of the seven2 because they all act under the devil1 and by his instigation1 so that his power is in them all1 yet so as to make up1 as it were1 an eighth empire1 distinct from them all4 #ag3i4 ,and here is the understanding that hath wisdom4 ,the seven heads are seven mountains1 upon which the woman sitteth3 and they are seven kings4 #ag3aj4 ,five are fallen1 one is1 and the other is not yet come3 and when he is come1 he must remain a short time4 #ag3aa4 ,and the beast which was and is not3 the same also is the eighth1 and is of the seven1 and goeth into destruction4 #ag3ab4 ,and the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings1 who have not yet received a kingdom3 but shall receive power as kings1 one hour after the beast4 ,ten kings444 ,ten lesser kingdoms1 enemies also of the church of ,christ3 which1 nevertheless1 shall be made instruments of the justice of ,god for the punishment of ,babylon4 ,some understand this of the ,goths1 ,vandals1 ,huns1 and other barbarous nations1 that destroyed the empire of ,rome4 #ag3ac4 ,these have one design3 and their strength and power they shall deliver to the beast4 #ag3ad4 ,these shall fight with the ,lamb4 ,and the ,lamb shall overcome them because he is ,lord of lords and ,king of kings3 and they that are with him are called and elect and faithful4 #ag3ae4 ,and he said to me3 ,the waters which thou sawest1 where the harlot sitteth1 are peoples and nations and tongues4 #ag3af4 ,and the ten horns which thou sawest in the beast3 ,these shall hate the harlot and shall make her desolate and naked and shall eat her flesh and shall burn her with fire4 #ag3ag4 ,for ,god hath given into their hearts to do that which pleaseth him3 that they give their kingdom to the beast1 till the words of ,god be fulfilled4 #ag3ah4 ,and the woman which thou sawest is the great city which hath kingdom over the kings of the earth4 ,apocalypse ,chapter #ah ,the fall of ,babylon4 ,kings and merchants lament over her4 #ah3a4 ,and after these things1 ,i saw another angel come down from heaven1 having great power3 and the earth was enlightened with his glory4 #ah3b4 ,and he cried out with a strong voice1 saying3 ,babylon the great is fallen1 is fallen3 and is become the habitation of devils and the hold of every unclean spirit and the hold of every unclean and hateful bird3 #ah3c4 ,because all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication3 and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her2 ,and the merchants of the earth have been made rich by the power of her delicacies4 #ah3d4 ,and ,i heard of the twelve tribes of the children of ,israel4 #ba3ac4 ,on the east1 three gates3 and on the north1 three gates3 and on the south1 three gates3 and on the west1 three gates4 #ba3ad4 ,and the wall of the city had twelve foundations3 ,and in them1 the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the ,lamb1 #ba3ae4 ,and he that spoke with me had a measure of a reed of gold1 to measure the city and the gates thereof and the wall4 #ba3af4 ,and the city lieth in a four-square3 and the length thereof is as great as the breadth4 ,and he measured the city with the golden reed for twelve thousand measure of a man1 i4e41 ,according to the measure of men1 and used by the angel444 ,this seems to be the true meaning of these words4 #ba3ah4 ,and the building of the wall thereof was of jasper stone3 but the city itself pure gold like to clear glass4 #ba3ai4 ,and the foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all manner of precious stones4 ,the first foundation was jasper3 the second1 quickly4 ,blessed is he that keepeth the words of the prophecy of this book4 #bb3h4 ,and ,i1 ,john1 who have heard and seen these things4 ,and1 after ,i had heard and seen1 ,i fell down to adore before the feet of the angel who shewed me the things4 #bb3i4 ,and he said to me3 ,see thou do it not4 ,for ,i am thy fellow servant1 and of thy brethren the prophets and of them that keep the words of the prophecy of this book4 ,adore ,god4 #bb3aj4 ,and he saith to me3 ,seal not the words of the prophecy of this book4 ,for the time is at hand4 ,for the time is at hand444 ,that is1 when compared to eternity1 all time and temporal things vanish1 and are but of short duration4 ,as to the time when the chief predictions should come to pass1 we have no certainty1 as appears by the different opinions1 both of the ancient fathers and late interpreters4 ,many think that most things set down from the #dth chapter to the end1 will not be fulfilled till a little time before the end of the world4 ,others are of opinion1 that a great part of them1 and particularly the fall of the wicked ,babylon1 happened at the destruction of paganism1 by the destruction of heathen ,rome1 and its persecuting heathen emperors4 ,of these interpretations1 see ,aleazar1 in his long commentary2 see the learned ,bossnet1 bishop of ,meaux1 in his treatise on this ,book2 and ,p4 ,alleman1 in his notes on the same ,apocalypse1 tom4 #ab1 who in his ,preface says1 that this1 in a great measure1 may be now looked upon as the opinion followed by the learned men4 ,in fine1 others think that ,st4 ,john's design was in a mystical way1 by metaphors and allegories1 to represent the attempts and persecutions of the wicked against the servants of ,god1 the punishments that should in a short time fall upon ,babylon1 that is1 upon all the wicked in general3 the eternal happiness and reward1 which ,god had reserved for the pious inhabitants of ,jerusalem1 that is1 for his faithful servants1 after their short trials and the tribulations of this mortal life4 ,in the mean time we meet with many profitable instructions and admonitions1 which we may easily enough understand3 but we have no certainty when we apply these predictions to particular events3 for as ,st4 ,jerome takes notice1 the ,apocalypse has as many mysteries as words1 or rather mysteries in every word4 ,apocalypsis ,joannis tot habet ,sacramenta quot verba--parum dixi1 in verbis singulis multiplices latent intelligentiae4 ,ep4 ad ,paulin1 t4 #d4 p4 #egd4 ,edit4 ,benedict4 #bb3aa4 ,he that hurteth1 let him hurt still3 and he that is filthy1 let him be filthy still3 and he that is just1 let him be justified still3 and he that is holy1 let him be sanctified still4 ,let him hurt still444 ,it is not an exhortation1 or license to go on in sin2 but an intimation1 that how far soever the wicked may proceed1 their progress shall quickly end1 and then they must expect to meet with proportionable punishments4 #bb3ab4 ,behold1 ,i come quickly3 and my reward is with me1 to render to every1 man according to his works4 #bb3ac4 ,i am ,alpha and ,omega1 the ,first and the ,last1 the ,beginning and the ,end4 #bb3ad4 ,blessed are they that wash their robes in the blood of the ,lamb3 that they may have a right to the tree of life and may enter in by the gates into the city4 #bb3ae4 ,without are dogs and sorcerers and unchaste and murderers and servers of idols and every one that loveth and maketh a lie4 #bb3af4 ,i1 ,jesus1 have sent my angel1 to testify to you these things in the churches4 ,i am the root and stock of ,david1 the bright and morning star4 #bb3ag4 ,and the spirit and the bride say3 ,come4 ,and he that heareth1 let him say3 ,come4 ,and he that thirsteth1 let him come4 ,and he that will1 let him take the water of life1 freely4 #bb3ah4 ,for ,i testify to every one that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book3 ,if any man shall add to these things1 ,god shall add unto him the plagues written in this book4 #bb3ai4 ,and if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy1 ,god shall take away his part out of the book of life1 and out of the holy city1 and from these things that are written in this book4 #bb3bj4 ,he that giveth testimony of these things1 saith3 ,surely1 ,i come quickly3 ,amen4 ,come1 ,lord ,jesus4 #bb3ba4 ,the grace of our ,lord ,jesus ,christ be with you all4 ,amen4
