most part of whom being ,jews before their conversion1 they were called ,hebrews4 ,he exhorts them to be thoroughly converted and confirmed in the faith of ,christ1 clearly shewing them the preeminence of ,christ's priesthood above the ,levitical1 and also the excellence of the new law above the old4 ,he commends faith by the example of the ancient fathers3 and exhorts them to patience and perseverance and to remain in fraternal charity4 ,it appears from chap4 #ac that this ,epistle was written in ,italy1 and probably at ,rome1 about twenty-nine years after our ,lord's ,ascension4 ,hebrews ,chapter #a ,god spoke of old by the prophets1 but now by his ,son1 who is incomparably greater than the angels4 #a3a4 ,god1 who1 at sundry times and in divers manners1 spoke in times past to the fathers by the prophets1 last of all1 #a3b4 ,in these days1 hath spoken to us by his ,son1 whom he hath appointed heir of all things1 by whom also he made the world4 #a3c4 ,who being the brightness of his glory and the figure of his substance and upholding all things by the word of his power1 making purgation of sins1 sitteth on the right hand of the majesty on high3 ,the figure444 that is1 the express image1 and most perfect resemblance4 ,making purgation444 ,that is1 having purged away our sins by his passion4 #a3d4 ,being made so much better than the angels as he hath inherited a more excellent name than they4 #a3e4 ,for to which of the angels hath he said at any time3 ,thou art my ,son1 to-day have ,i begotten thee8 ,and again3 ,i will be to him a ,father1 and he shall be to me a ,son8 #a3f4 ,and again1 when he bringeth in the first begotten into the world1 he saith3 ,and let all the angels of ,god adore him4 #a3g4 ,and to the angels indeed he saith3 ,he that maketh his angels spirits and his ministers a flame of fire4 #a3h4 ,but to the ,son3 ,thy throne1 ,o ,god1 is for ever and ever3 a sceptre of justice is the sceptre of thy kingdom4 #a3i4 ,thou hast loved justice and hated iniquity3 therefore ,god1 thy ,god1 hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows4 #a3aj4 ,and3 ,thou in the beginning1 ,o ,lord1 didst found the earth3 and the works of thy hands are the heavens4 #a3aa4 ,they shall perish3 but thou shalt continue3 and they shall all grow old as a garment4 #a3ab4 ,and as a vesture shalt thou change them1 and they shalt be changed4 ,but thou art the selfsame3 and thy years shall not fail4 #a3ac4 ,but to which of the angels said he at any time3 ,sit on my right hand1 until ,i make thy enemies thy footstool8 #a3ad4 ,are they not all ministering spirits1 sent to minister for them who shall receive the inheritance of salvation8 ,hebrews ,chapter #b ,the transgression of the precepts of the ,son of ,god is far more condemnable than of those of the ,old ,testament given by angels4 #b3a4 ,therefore ought we more diligently to observe the things which we have heard lest perhaps we should let them slip4 #b3b4 ,for if the word spoken by angels became steadfast and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward3 #b3c4 ,how shall we escape if we neglect so great salvation8 ,which1 having begun to be declared by the ,lord1 was confirmed unto us by them that heard him4 #b3d4 ,god also bearing them witness by signs and wonders and divers miracles and distributions of the ,holy ,ghost1 according to his own will4 #b3e4 ,for ,god hath not subjected unto angels the world to come1 whereof we speak4 #b3f4 ,but one in a certain place hath testified1 saying3 ,what is man1 that thou art mindful of him8 ,or the son of man1 that thou visitest him8 #b3g4 ,thou hast made him a little lower than the angels3 thou hast crowned him with glory and honour and hast set him over the works of thy hands4 #b3h4 ,thou hast subjected all things under his feet4 ,for in that he hath subjected all things to him he left nothing not subject to him4 ,but now we see not as yet all things subject to him4 #b3i4 ,but we see ,jesus1 who was made a little lower than the angels1 for the suffering of death1 crowned with glory and honour3 that1 through the grace of ,god he might taste death for all4 #b3aj4 ,for it became him for whom are all things and by whom are all things1 who had brought many children into glory1 to perfect the author of their salvation1 by his passion4 ,perfect by his passion444 ,by suffering1 ,christ was to enter into his glory1 ,luke #bd4bf1 which the apostle here calls being made perfect4 #b3aa4 ,for both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one4 ,for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren1 saying3 #b3ab4 ,i will declare thy name to my brethren3 in the midst of the church will ,i praise thee4 #b3ac4 ,and again3 ,i will put my trust in him4 ,and again3 ,behold ,i and my children1 whom ,god hath given me4 #b3ad4 ,therefore because the children are partakers of flesh and blood1 he also himself in like manner hath been partaker of the same3 that1 through death1 he might destroy him who had the empire of death1 that is to say1 the devil3 #b3ae4 ,and might deliver them1 who through the fear of death were all their lifetime subject to servitude4 #b3af4 ,for nowhere doth he take hold of the angels3 but of the seed of ,abraham he taketh hold4 ,no where doth he1 etc444 ,that is1 he never took upon him the nature of angels1 but that of the seed of ,abraham4 #b3ag4 ,wherefore1 it behoved him in all things to be made like unto his brethren1 that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest before ,god1 that he might be a propitiation for the sins of the people4 #b3ah4 ,for in that wherein he himself hath suffered and been tempted he is able to succour them also that are tempted4 ,hebrews ,chapter #c ,christ is more excellent than ,moses4 ,wherefore we must adhere to him by faith and obedience4 #c3a4 ,wherefore1 holy brethren1 partakers of the heavenly vocation consider the apostle and high priest of our confession1 ,jesus3 #c3b4 ,who is faithful to him that made him1 as was also ,moses in all his house4 #c3c4 ,for this man was counted worthy of greater glory than ,moses1 by so much as he that hath built the house hath greater honour than the house4 #c3d4 ,for every house is built by some man3 but he that created all things is ,god4 #c3e4 ,and ,moses indeed was faithful in all his house as a servant1 for a testimony of those things which were to be said3 #c3f4 ,but ,christ1 as the ,son in his own house3 which house are we1 if we hold fast the confidence and glory of hope unto the end4 #c3g4 ,wherefore1 as the ,holy ,ghost saith3 ,to-day if you shall hear his voice1 #c3h4 ,harden not your hearts1 as in the provocation1 in the day of temptation in the desert1 #c3i4 ,where your fathers tempted me1 proved and saw my works1 #c3aj4 ,forty years3 for which cause ,i was offended with this generation1 and ,i said3 ,they always err in heart4 ,and they have not known my ways4 #c3aa4 ,as ,i have sworn in my wrath3 ,if they shall enter into my rest4 #c3ab4 ,take heed1 brethren1 lest perhaps there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief1 to depart from the living ,god4 #c3ac4 ,but exhort one another every day1 whilst it is called to day1 that none of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin4 #c3ad4 ,for we are made partakers of ,christ3 yet so1 if we hold the beginning of his substance firm unto the end4 #c3ae4 ,while it is said3 ,to day1 if you shall hear his voice1 harden not your hearts1 as in that provocation4 #c3af4 ,for some who heard did provoke3 but not all that came out of ,egypt by ,moses4 #c3ag4 ,and with whom was he offended forty years8 ,was it not with them that sinned1 whose carcasses were overthrown in the desert8 #c3ah4 ,and to whom did he swear1 that they should not enter into his rest3 but to them that were incredulous8 #c3ai4 ,and we see that they could not enter in1 because of unbelief4 ,hebrews ,chapter #d ,the ,christian's rest4 ,we are to enter into it through ,jesus ,christ4 #d3a4 ,let us fear therefore lest1 the promise being left of entering into his rest1 any of you should be thought to be wanting4 #d3b4 ,for unto us also it hath been declared in like manner as unto them4 ,but the word of hearing did not profit them1 not being mixed with faith of those things they heard4 #d3c4 ,for we1 who have believed1 shall enter into rest2 as he said3 ,as ,i have sworn in my wrath3 ,if they shall enter into my rest2 and this indeed when the works from the foundation of the world were finished4 #d3d4 ,for in a certain place he spoke of the seventh day thus3 ,and ,god rested the seventh day from all his works4 #d3e4 ,and in this place again3 ,if they shall enter into my rest4 #d3f4 ,seeing then it remaineth that some are to enter into it1 and they to whom it was first preached did not enter because of unbelief3 #d3g4 ,again he limiteth a certain day1 saying in ,david2 ,to day1 after so long a time as it is above said3 ,to day if you shall hear his voice1 harden not your hearts4 #d3h4 ,for if ,jesus had given them rest he would never have afterwards spoken of another day4 ,jesus444 ,josue1 who in ,greek is called ,jesus4 #d3i4 ,there remaineth therefore a day of rest for the people of ,god4 #d3aj4 ,for he that is entered into his rest1 the same also hath rested from his works1 as ,god did from his4 #d3aa4 ,let us hasten therefore to enter into that rest3 lest any man fall into the same example of unbelief4 #d3ab4 ,for the word of ,god is living and effectual and more piercing than any two edged sword2 and reaching unto the division of the soul and the spirit1 of the joints also and the marrow3 and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart4 #d3ac4 ,neither is there any creature invisible in his sight3 but all things are naked and open to his eyes1 to whom our speech is4 #d3ad4 ,having therefore a great high priest that hath passed into the heavens1 ,jesus the ,son of ,god3 let us hold fast our confession4 #d3ae4 ,for we have not a high priest who cannot have compassion on our infirmities3 but one tempted in all things like as we are1 without sin4 #d3af4 ,let us go therefore with confidence to the throne of grace3 that we may obtain mercy and find grace in seasonable aid4 ,hebrews ,chapter #e ,the office of a high priest4 ,christ is our high priest4 #e3a4 ,for every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in the things that appertain to ,god1 that he may offer up gifts and sacrifices for sins3 #e3b4 ,who can have compassion on them that are ignorant and that err3 because he himself also is compassed with infirmity4 #e3c4 ,and therefore he ought1 as for the people1 so also for himself1 to offer for sins4 #e3d4 ,neither doth any man take the honour to himself1 but he that is called by ,god1 as ,aaron was4 #e3e4 ,so ,christ also did not glorify himself1 that he might be made a high priest3 but he that said unto him3 ,thou art my ,son3 this day have ,i begotten thee4 #e3f4 ,as he saith also in another place3 ,thou art a priest for ever1 according to the order of ,melchisedech4 #e3g4 ,who in the days of his flesh1 with a strong cry and tears1 offering up prayers and supplications to him that was able to save him from death1 was heard for his reverence4 #e3h4 ,and whereas indeed he was the ,son of ,god1 he learned obedience by the things which he suffered4 #e3i4 ,and being consummated1 he became1 to all that obey him1 the cause of eternal salvation3 #e3aj4 ,called by ,god a high priest1 according to the order of ,melchisedech4 #e3aa4 ,of whom we have much to say and hard to be intelligibly uttered3 because you are become weak to hear4 #e3ab4 ,for whereas for the time you ought to be masters1 you have need to be taught again what are the first elements of the words of ,god3 and you are become such as have need of milk and not of strong meat4 #e3ac4 ,for every one that is a partaker of milk is unskilful in the word of justice3 for he is a little child4 #e3ad4 ,but strong meat is for the perfect3 for them who by custom have their senses exercised to the discerning of good and evil4 ,hebrews ,chapter #f ,he warns them of the danger of falling by apostasy and exhorts them to patience and perseverance4 #f3a4 ,wherefore1 leaving the word of the beginning of ,christ1 let us go on to things more perfect3 not laying again the foundation of penance from dead works and of faith towards ,god1 ,the word of the beginning444 ,the first rudiments of the ,christian doctrine4 #f3b4 ,of the doctrine of baptisms and imposition of hands1 and of the resurrection of the dead1 and of eternal judgment4 #f3c4 ,and this will we do1 if ,god permit4 #f3d4 ,for it is impossible for those who were once illuminated1 have tasted also the heavenly gift and were made partakers of the ,holy ,ghost1 ,it is impossible1 etc444 ,the meaning is1 that it is impossible for such as have fallen after baptism1 to be again baptized2 and very hard for such as have apostatized from the faith1 after having received many graces1 to return again to the happy state from which they fell4 #f3e4 ,have moreover tasted the good word of ,god and the powers of the world to come1 #f3f4 ,and are fallen away3 to be renewed again to penance1 crucifying again to themselves the ,son of ,god and making him a mockery4 #f3g4 ,for the earth1 that drinketh in the rain which cometh often upon it and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is tilled1 receiveth blessing from ,god4 #f3h4 ,but that which bringeth forth thorns and briers is reprobate and very near unto a curse3 whose end is to be burnt4 #f3i4 ,but1 my dearly beloved1 we trust better things of you1 and nearer to salvation2 though we speak thus4 #f3aj4 ,for ,god is not unjust1 that he should forget your work and the love which you have shewn in his name1 you who have ministered and do minister to the saints4 #f3aa4 ,and we desire that every one of you shew forth the same carefulness to the accomplishing of hope unto the end3 #f3ab4 ,that you become not slothful1 but followers of them who through faith and patience shall inherit the promises4 #f3ac4 ,for ,god making promises to ,abraham1 because he had no one greater by whom he might swear1 swore by himself1 #f3ad4 ,saying3 ,unless blessing ,i shall bless thee and multiplying ,i shall multiply thee4 #f3ae4 ,and so patiently enduring he obtained the promise4 #f3af4 ,for men swear by one greater than themselves3 and an oath for confirmation is the end of all their controversy4 #f3ag4 ,wherein ,god1 meaning more abundantly to shew to the heirs of the promise the immutability of his counsel1 interposed an oath3 #f3ah4 ,that by two immutable things in which it is impossible for ,god to lie1 we may have the strongest comfort1 we who have fled for refuge to hold fast the hope set before us4 #f3ai4 ,which we have as an anchor of the soul1 sure and firm1 and which entereth in even within the veil3 #f3bj4 ,where the forerunner ,jesus is entered for us1 made a high priest for ever according to the order of ,melchisedech4 ,hebrews ,chapter #g ,the priesthood of ,christ according to the order of ,melchisedech excels the ,levitical priesthood and puts an end both to that and to the law4 #g3a4 ,for this ,melchisedech was king of ,salem1 priest of the most high ,god1 who met ,abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him3 #g3b4 ,to whom also ,abraham divided the tithes of all3 who first indeed by interpretation is king of justice3 and then also king of ,salem1 that is1 king of peace3 #g3c4 ,without father1 without mother1 without genealogy1 having neither beginning of days nor end of life1 but likened unto the ,son of ,god1 continueth a priest for ever4 ,without father1 etc444 ,not that he had no father1 etc41 but that neither his father1 nor his pedigree1 nor his birth1 nor his death1 are set down in scripture4 #g3d4 ,now consider how great this man is1 to whom also ,abraham the patriarch gave tithes out of the principal things4 #g3e4 ,and indeed they that are of the sons of ,levi1 who receive the priesthood1 have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law1 that is to say1 of their brethren3 though they themselves also came out of the loins of ,abraham4 #g3f4 ,but he1 whose pedigree is not numbered among them1 received tithes of ,abraham and blessed him that had the promises4 #g3g4 ,and without all contradiction1 that which is less is blessed by the better4 #g3h4 ,and here indeed1 men that die receive tithes3 but there1 he hath witness that he liveth4 #g3i4 ,and 7as it may be said7 even ,levi who received tithes paid tithes in ,abraham3 #g3aj4 ,for he was yet in the loins of his father when ,melchisedech met him4 #g3aa4 ,if then perfection was by the ,levitical priesthood 7for under it the people received the law71 what further need was there that another priest should rise according to the order of ,melchisedech3 and not be called according to the order of ,aaron8 #g3ab4 ,for the priesthood being translated1 it is necessary that a translation also be made of the law1 #g3ac4 ,for he of whom these things are spoken is of another tribe1 of which no one attended on the altar4 #g3ad4 ,for it is evident that our ,lord sprung out of ,juda3 in which tribe ,moses spoke nothing concerning priests4 #g3ae4 ,and it is yet far more evident3 if according to the similitude of ,melchisedech there ariseth another priest1 #g3af4 ,who is made1 not according to the law of a law of a carnal commandment1 but according to the power of an indissoluble life4 #g3ag4 ,for he testifieth3 ,thou art a priest for ever according to the order of ,melchisedech4 #g3ah4 ,there is indeed a setting aside of the former commandment1 because of the weakness and unprofitableness thereof3 #g3ai4 ,for the law brought nothing to perfection3 but a bringing in of a better hope1 by which we draw nigh to ,god4 #g3bj4 ,and inasmuch as it is not without an oath 7for the others indeed were made priests without an oath3 #g3ba4 ,but this with an oath1 by him that said unto him3 ,the ,lord hath sworn and he will not repent3 ,thou art a priest for ever74 #g3bb4 ,by so much is ,jesus made a surety of a better testament4 #g3bc4 ,and the others indeed were made many priests1 because by reason of death they were not suffered to continue3 ,many priests1 etc444 ,the apostle notes this difference between the high priests of the law1 and our high priest ,jesus ,christ2 that they being removed by death1 made way for their successors2 whereas our ,lord ,jesus is a priest for ever1 and hath no successor2 but liveth and concurreth for ever with his ministers1 the priests of the new testament1 in all their functions4 ,also1 that no one priest of the law1 nor all of them together1 could offer that absolute sacrifice of everlasting redemption1 which our one high priest ,jesus ,christ has offered once1 and for ever4 #g3bd4 ,but this1 for that he continueth for ever1 hath an everlasting priesthood3 #g3be4 ,whereby he is able also to save for ever them that come to ,god by him2 always living to make intercession for us4 ,make intercession444 ,christ1 as man1 continually maketh intercession for us1 by representing his passion to his ,father4 #g3bf4 ,for it was fitting that we should have such a high priest1 holy1 innocent1 undefiled1 separated from sinners1 and made higher than the heavens3 #g3bg4 ,who needeth not daily 7as the other priests7 to offer sacrifices1 first for his own sins1 and then for the people's3 for this he did once1 in offering himself4 #g3bh4 ,for the law maketh men priests1 who have infirmity3 but the word of the oath 7which was since the law7 the ,son who is perfected for evermore4 ,hebrews ,chapter #h ,more of the excellence of the priesthood of ,christ and of the ,new ,testament4 #h3a4 ,now of the things which we have spoken1 this is the sum3 ,we have such an high priest who is set on the right hand of the throne of majesty in the heavens1 #h3b4 ,a minister of the holies and of the true tabernacle1 which the ,lord hath pitched1 and not man4 ,the holies444 ,that is1 the sanctuary4 #h3c4 ,for every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices3 wherefore it is necessary that he also should have some thing to offer4 #h3d4 ,if then he were on earth1 he would not be a priest3 seeing that there would be others to offer gifts according to the law4 ,if then he were on earth1 etc444 ,that is1 if he were not of a higher condition than the ,levitical order of earthly priests1 and had not another kind of sacrifice to offer1 he should be excluded by them from the priesthood1 and its functions1 which by the law were appropriated to their tribe4 #h3e4 ,who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things4 ,as it was answered to ,moses1 when he was to finish the tabernacle3 ,see 7saith he7 that thou make all things according to the pattern which was shewn thee on the mount4 ,who serve unto1 etc444 ,the priesthood of the law and its functions were a kind of an example and shadow of what is done by ,christ in his church militant and triumphant1 of which the tabernacle was a pattern4 #h3f4 ,but now he hath obtained a better ministry1 by how much also he is a mediator of a better testament which is established on better promises4 #h3g4 ,for if that former had been faultless1 there should not indeed a place have been sought for a second4 #h3h4 ,for1 finding fault with them1 he saith3 ,behold the days shall come1 saith the ,lord3 and ,i will perfect1 unto the house of ,israel and unto the house of ,juda1 a new testament3 #h3i4 ,not according to the testament which ,i made to their fathers1 on the day when ,i took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of ,egypt3 because they continued not in my testament3 and ,i regarded them not1 saith the ,lord4 #h3aj4 ,for this is the testament which ,i will make to the house of ,israel after those days1 saith the ,lord3 ,i will give my laws into their mind3 and in their heart will ,i write them4 ,and ,i will be their ,god3 and they shall be my people4 #h3aa4 ,and they shall not teach every man his neighbour and every man his brother1 saying3 ,know the ,lord4 ,for all shall know me1 from the least to the greatest of them4 ,they shall not teach1 etc444 ,so great shall be light and grace of the new testament1 that it shall not be necessary to inculcate to the faithful the belief and knowledge of the true ,god1 for they shall all know him4 #h3ab4 ,because ,i will be merciful to their iniquities3 and their sins ,i will remember no more4 #h3ac4 ,now in saying a new1 he hath made the former old4 ,and that which decayeth and groweth old is near its end4 ,a new444 ,supply covenant'4 ,hebrews ,chapter #i ,the sacrifices of the law were far inferior to that of ,christ4 #i3a4 ,the former indeed had also justifications of divine service and a sanctuary4 #i3b4 ,for there was a tabernacle made the first1 wherein were the candlesticks and the table and the setting forth of loaves1 which is called the ,holy4 #i3c4 ,and after the second veil1 the tabernacle which is called the ,holy of ,holies3 #i3d4 ,having a golden censer and the ark of the testament covered about on every part with gold1 in which was a golden pot that had manna and the rod of ,aaron that had blossomed and the tables of the testament4 #i3e4 ,and over it were the cherubims of glory overshadowing the propitiatory3 of which it is not needful to speak now particularly4 #i3f4 ,now these things being thus ordered1 into the first tabernacle1 the priests indeed always entered1 accomplishing the offices of sacrifices4 #i3g4 ,but into the second1 the high priest alone1 once a year3 not without blood1 which he offereth for his own and the people's ignorance3 #i3h4 ,the ,holy ,ghost signifying this3 ,that the way into the ,holies was not yet made manifest1 whilst the former tabernacle was yet standing4 #i3i4 ,which is a parable of the time present3 according to which gifts and sacrifices are offered1 which cannot1 as to the conscience1 make him perfect that serveth1 only in meats and in drinks1 #i3aj4 ,and divers washings and justices of the flesh laid on them until the time of correction4 ,of correction444 ,viz41 when ,christ should correct and settle all things4 #i3aa4 ,but ,christ1 being come an high ,priest of the good things to come1 by a greater and more perfect tabernacle1 not made with hand1 that is1 not of this creation3 #i3ab4 ,neither by the blood of goats or of calves1 but by his own blood1 entered once into the ,holies1 having obtained eternal redemption4 ,eternal redemption444 ,by that one sacrifice of his blood1 once offered on the cross1 ,christ our ,lord paid and exhibited1 once for all1 the general price and ransom of all mankind3 which no other priest could do4 #i3ac4 ,for if the blood of goats and of oxen1 and the ashes of an heifer1 being sprinkled1 sanctify such as are defiled1 to the cleansing of the flesh3 #i3ad4 ,how much more shall the blood of ,christ1 who by the ,holy ,ghost offered himself unspotted unto ,god1 cleanse our conscience from dead works1 to serve the living ,god8 #i3ae4 ,and therefore he is the mediator of the new testament3 that by means of his death for the redemption of those transgressions which were under the former testament1 they that are called may receive the promise of eternal inheritance4 #i3af4 ,for where there is a testament the death of the testator must of necessity come in4 #i3ag4 ,for a testament is of force after men are dead3 otherwise it is as yet of no strength1 whilst the testator liveth4 #i3ah4 ,whereupon neither was the first indeed dedicated without blood4 #i3ai4 ,for when every commandment of the law had been read by ,moses to all the people1 he took the blood of calves and goats1 with water1 and scarlet wool and hyssop1 and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people4 #i3bj4 ,saying3 ,this is the blood of the testament which ,god hath enjoined unto you4 #i3ba4 ,the tabernacle also and all the vessels of the ministry1 in like manner1 he sprinkled with blood4 #i3bb4 ,and almost all things1 according to the law1 are cleansed with blood3 and without shedding of blood there is no remission4 #i3bc4 ,it is necessary therefore that the patterns of heavenly things should be cleansed with these3 but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these4 #i3bd4 ,for ,jesus is not entered into the ,holies made with hands1 the patterns of the true3 but into ,heaven itself1 that he may appear now in the presence of ,god for us4 #i3be4 ,nor yet that he should offer himself often1 as the high priest entereth into the ,holies every year with the blood of others3 ,offer himself often444 ,christ shall never more offer himself in sacrifice1 in that violent1 painful1 and bloody manner1 nor can there be any occasion for it3 since by that one sacrifice upon the cross1 he has furnished the full ransom1 redemption1 and remedy for all the sins of the world4 ,but this hinders not that he may offer himself daily in the sacred mysteries in an unbloody manner1 for the daily application of that one sacrifice of redemption to our souls4 #i3bf4 ,for then he ought to have suffered often from the beginning of the world4 ,but now once1 at the end of ages1 he hath appeared for the destruction of sin by the sacrifice of himself4 #i3bg4 ,and as it is appointed unto men once to die1 and after this the judgment3 #i3bh4 ,so also ,christ was offered once to exhaust the sins of many4 ,the second time he shall appear without sin to them that expect him unto salvation4 ,to exhaust444 ,that is1 to empty1 or draw out to the very bottom1 by a plentiful and perfect redemption4 ,hebrews ,chapter #aj ,because of the insufficiency of the sacrifices of the law1 ,christ our high priest shed his own blood for us1 offering up once for all the sacrifice of our redemption4 ,he exhorts them to perseverance4 #aj3a4 ,for the law1 having a shadow of the good things to come1 not the very image of the things1 by the selfsame sacrifices which they offer continually every year1 can never make the comers thereunto perfect4 #aj3b4 ,for then they would have ceased to be offered3 because the worshippers once cleansed should have no conscience of sin any longer4 ,they would have ceased444 ,if they had been of themselves perfect to all the intents of redemption and remission1 as ,christ's death is there would have been no occasion of so often repeating them3 as there is no occasion for ,christ's dying any more for our sins4 #aj3c4 ,but in them there is made a commemoration of sins every year3 #aj3d4 ,for it is impossible that with the blood of oxen and goats sin should be taken away4 #aj3e4 ,wherefore1 when he cometh into the world he saith3 ,sacrifice and oblation thou wouldest not3 but a body thou hast fitted to me4 #aj3f4 ,holocausts for sin did not please thee4 #aj3g4 ,then said ,i3 ,behold ,i come3 in the head of the book it is written of me3 that ,i should do thy will1 ,o ,god4 #aj3h4 ,in saying before1 ,sacrifices1 and oblations1 and holocausts for sin thou wouldest not1 neither are they pleasing to thee1 which are offered according to the law4 #aj3i4 ,then said ,i3 ,behold1 ,i come to do thy will1 ,o ,god3 ,he taketh away the first1 that he may establish that which followeth4 #aj3aj4 ,in the which will1 we are sanctified by the oblation of the body of ,jesus ,christ once4 #aj3aa4 ,and every priest indeed standeth daily ministering and often offering the same sacrifices which can never take away sins4 #aj3ab4 ,but this man1 offering one sacrifice for sins1 for ever sitteth on the right hand of ,god1 #aj3ac4 ,from henceforth expecting until his enemies be made his footstool4 #aj3ad4 ,for by one oblation he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified4 #aj3ae4 ,and the ,holy ,ghost also doth testify this to us4 ,for after that he said3 #aj3af4 ,and this is the testament which ,i will make unto them after those days1 saith the ,lord4 ,i will give my laws in their hearts and on their minds will ,i write them3 #aj3ag4 ,and their sins and iniquities ,i will remember no more4 #aj3ah4 ,now1 where there is a remission of these1 there is no more an oblation for sin4 ,there is no more an oblation for sin444 ,where there is a full remission of sins1 as in baptism1 there is no more occasion for a sin offering to be made for such sins already remitted2 and as for sins committed afterwards1 they can only be remitted in virtue of the one oblation of ,christ's death4 #aj3ai4 ,having therefore1 brethren1 a confidence in the entering into the holies by the blood of ,christ3 #aj3bj4 ,a new and living way which he hath dedicated for us through the veil1 that is to say1 his flesh3 #aj3ba4 ,and a high priest over the house of ,god3 #aj3bb4 ,let us draw near with a true heart1 in fulness of faith1 having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with clean water4 #aj3bc4 ,let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering 7for he is faithful that hath promised73 #aj3bd4 ,and let us consider one another1 to provoke unto charity and to good works3 #aj3be4 ,not forsaking our assembly1 as some are accustomed3 but comforting one another1 and so much the more as you see the day approaching4 #aj3bf4 ,for if we sin wilfully after having the knowledge of the truth1 there is now left no sacrifice for sins3 ,if we sin wilfully444 ,he speaks of the sin of wilful apostasy from the known truth2 after which1 as we can not be baptized again1 we can not expect to have that abundant remission of sins1 which ,christ purchased by his death1 applied to our souls in that ample manner as it is in baptism3 but we have rather all manner of reason to look for a dreadful judgment2 the more because apostates from the known truth1 seldom or never have the grace to return to it4 #aj3bg4 ,but a certain dreadful expectation of judgment1 and the rage of a fire which shall consume the adversaries4 #aj3bh4 ,a man making void the law of ,moses dieth without any mercy under two or three witnesses3 #aj3bi4 ,how much more1 do you think he deserveth worse punishments1 who hath trodden under foot the ,son of ,god and hath esteemed the blood of the testament unclean1 by which he was sanctified1 and hath offered an affront to the ,spirit of grace8 #aj3cj4 ,for we know him that hath said3 ,vengeance belongeth to me1 and ,i will repay4 ,and again3 ,the ,lord shall judge his people4 #aj3ca4 ,it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living ,god4 #aj3cb4 ,but call to mind the former days1 wherein1 being illuminated1 you endured a great fight of afflictions4 #aj3cc4 ,and on the one hand indeed1 by reproaches and tribulations1 were made a gazingstock2 and on the other1 became companions of them that were used in such sort4 #aj3cd4 ,for you both had compassion on them that were in bands and took with joy the being stripped of your own goods1 knowing that you have a better and a lasting substance4 #aj3ce4 ,do not therefore lose your confidence which hath a great reward4 #aj3cf4 ,for patience is necessary for you3 that1 doing the will of ,god1 you may receive the promise4 #aj3cg4 ,for yet a little and a very little while1 and he that is to come will come and will not delay4 #aj3ch4 ,but my just man liveth by faith3 but if he withdraw himself1 he shall not please my soul4 #aj3ci4 ,but we are not the children of withdrawing unto perdition1 but of faith to the saving of the soul4 ,hebrews ,chapter #aa ,what faith is4 ,its wonderful fruits and efficacy demonstrated in the fathers4 #aa3a4 ,now1 faith is the substance of things to be hoped for1 the evidence of things that appear not4 #aa3b4 ,for by this the ancients obtained a testimony4 #aa3c4 ,by faith we understand that the world was framed by the word of ,god3 that from invisible things visible things might be made4 #aa3d4 ,by faith ,abel offered to ,god a sacrifice exceeding that of ,cain1 by which he obtained a testimony that he was just1 ,god giving testimony to his gifts4 ,and by it he being dead yet speaketh4 #aa3e4 ,by faith ,henoch was translated that he should not see death3 and he was not found because ,god had translated him4 ,for before his translation he had testimony that he pleased ,god4 #aa3f4 ,but without faith it is impossible to please ,god4 ,for he that cometh to ,god must believe that he is3 and is a rewarder to them that seek him4 #aa3g4 ,by faith ,noe1 having received an answer concerning those things which as yet were not seen1 moved with fear1 framed the ark for the saving of his house3 by the which he condemned the world and was instituted heir of the justice which is by faith4 #aa3h4 ,by faith he that is called ,abraham obeyed to go out into a place which he was to receive for an inheritance4 ,and he went out1 not knowing whither he went4 ,he that is called ,abraham444 or1 ,abraham being called4 #aa3i4 ,by faith he abode in the land of promise1 as in a strange country1 dwelling in cottages1 with ,isaac and ,jacob1 the co-heirs of the same promise4 #aa3aj4 ,for he looked for a city that hath foundations3 whose builder and maker is ,god4 #aa3aa4 ,by faith also ,sara herself1 being barren1 received strength to conceive seed1 even past the time of age3 because she believed that he was faithful who had promised1 #aa3ab4 ,for which cause there sprung even from one 7and him as good as dead7 as the stars of heaven in multitude and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable4 #aa3ac4 ,all these died according to faith1 not having received the promises but beholding them afar off and saluting them and confessing that they are pilgrims and strangers on the earth4 #aa3ad4 ,for they that say these things do signify that they seek a country4 #aa3ae4 ,and truly1 if they had been mindful of that from whence they came out1 they had doubtless1 time to return4 #aa3af4 ,but now they desire a better1 that is to say1 a heavenly country4 ,therefore1 ,god is not ashamed to be called their ,god3 for he hath prepared for them a city4 #aa3ag4 ,by faith ,abraham1 when he was tried1 offered ,isaac3 and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son1 #aa3ah4 7,to whom it was said3 ,in ,isaac shalt thy seed be called37 #aa3ai4 ,accounting that ,god is able to raise up even from the dead4 ,whereupon also he received him for a parable4 ,for a parable444 ,that is1 as a figure of ,christ1 slain and coming to life again4 #aa3bj4 ,by faith also of things to come ,isaac blessed ,jacob and ,esau4 #aa3ba4 ,by faith ,jacob1 dying1 blessed each of the sons of ,joseph and adored the top of his rod4 ,adored the top of his rod444 ,the apostle here follows the ancient ,greek ,bible of the seventy interpreters1 7which translates in this manner1 ,gen4 #dg4 #ca417 and alleges this fact of ,jacob1 in paying a relative honour and veneration to the top of the rod or sceptre of ,joseph1 as to a figure of ,christ's sceptre and kingdom1 as an instance and argument of his faith4 ,but some translators1 who are no friends to this relative honour1 have corrupted the text1 by translating it1 he worshipped1 leaning upon the top of his staff2 as if this circumstance of leaning upon his staff were any argument of ,jacob's faith1 or worthy the being thus particularly taken notice of by the ,holy ,ghost4 #aa3bb4 ,by faith ,joseph1 when he was dying1 made mention of the going out of the children of ,israel and gave commandment concerning his bones4 #aa3bc4 ,by faith ,moses1 when he was born1 was hid three months by his parents3 because they saw he was a comely babe1 and they feared not the king's edict4 #aa3bd4 ,by faith ,moses1 when he was grown up1 denied himself to be the son of ,pharao's daughter3 #aa3be4 ,rather choosing to be afflicted with the people of ,god than to have the pleasure of sin for a time3 #aa3bf4 ,esteeming the reproach of ,christ greater riches than the treasure of the ,egyptians4 ,for he looked unto the reward4 #aa3bg4 ,by faith he left ,egypt1 not fearing the fierceness of the king3 for he endured1 as seeing him that is invisible4 #aa3bh4 ,by faith he celebrated the pasch and the shedding of the blood3 that he who destroyed the firstborn might not touch them4 #aa3bi4 ,by faith they passed through the ,red ,sea1 as by dry land3 which the ,egyptians attempting1 were swallowed up4 #aa3cj4 ,by faith the walls of ,jericho fell down1 by the going round them seven days4 #aa3ca4 ,by faith ,rahab the harlot perished not with the unbelievers1 receiving the spies with peace4 #aa3cb4 ,and what shall ,i yet say8 ,for the time would fail me to tell of ,gedeon1 ,barac1 ,samson1 ,jephthe1 ,david1 ,samuel1 and the prophets3 #aa3cc4 ,who by faith conquered kingdoms1 wrought justice1 obtained promises1 stopped the mouths of lions1 #aa3cd4 ,quenched the violence of fire1 escaped the edge of the sword1 recovered strength from weakness1 became valiant in battle1 put to flight the armies of foreigners4 #aa3ce4 ,women received their dead raised to life again4 ,but others were racked1 not accepting deliverance1 that they might find a better resurrection4 #aa3cf4 ,and others had trial of mockeries and stripes3 moreover also of bands and prisons4 #aa3cg4 ,they were stoned1 they were cut asunder1 they were tempted1 they were put to death by the sword1 they wandered about in sheepskins1 in goatskins1 being in want1 distressed1 afflicted3 #aa3ch4 ,of whom the world was not worthy3 wandering in deserts1 in mountains and in dens and in caves of the earth4 #aa3ci4 ,and all these1 being approved by the testimony of faith1 received not the promise3 #aa3dj4 ,god providing some better thing for us1 that they should not be perfected without us4 ,hebrews ,chapter #ab ,exhortation to constancy under their crosses4 ,the danger of abusing the graces of the ,new ,testament4 #ab3a4 ,and therefore we also having so great a cloud of witnesses over our head1 laying aside every weight and sin which surrounds us1 let us run by patience to the fight proposed to us3 #ab3b4 ,looking on ,jesus1 the author and finisher of faith1 who1 having joy set before him1 endured the cross1 despising the shame1 and now sitteth on the right hand of the throne of ,god4 #ab3c4 ,for think diligently upon him that endured such opposition from sinners against himself that you be not wearied1 fainting in your minds4 #ab3d4 ,for you have not yet resisted unto blood1 striving against sin4 #ab3e4 ,and you have forgotten the consolation which speaketh to you1 as unto children1 saying3 ,my son1 neglect not the discipline of the ,lord3 neither be thou wearied whilst thou art rebuked by him4 #ab3f4 ,for whom the ,lord loveth he chastiseth3 and he scourgeth every son whom he receiveth4 #ab3g4 ,persevere under discipline4 ,god dealeth with you as with his sons4 ,for what son is there whom the father doth not correct8 #ab3h4 ,but if you be without chastisement1 whereof all are made partakers1 then are you bastards and not sons4 #ab3i4 ,moreover1 we have had fathers of our flesh for instructors1 and we reverenced them4 ,shall we not much more obey the ,father of spirits and live8 #ab3aj4 ,and they indeed for a few days1 according to their own pleasure1 instructed us3 but he1 for our profit1 that we might receive his sanctification4 #ab3aa4 ,now all chastisement for the present indeed seemeth not to bring with it joy1 but sorrow3 but afterwards it will yield to them that are exercised by it the most peaceable fruit of justice4 #ab3ab4 ,wherefore1 lift up the hands which hang down and the feeble knees3 #ab3ac4 ,and make straight steps with your feet3 that no one1 halting1 may go out of the way2 but rather be healed4 #ab3ad4 ,follow peace with all men and holiness3 without which no man shall see ,god4 #ab3ae4 ,looking diligently1 lest any man be wanting to the grace of ,god3 lest any root of bitterness springing up do hinder and by it many be defiled3 #ab3af4 ,lest there be any fornicator or profane person1 as ,esau who for one mess sold his first birthright4 #ab3ag4 ,for know ye that afterwards1 when he desired to inherit the benediction1 he was rejected4 ,for he found no place of repentance1 although with tears he had sought it4 ,he found1 etc444 ,that is1 he found no way to bring his father to repent1 or change his mind1 with relation to his having given the blessing to his younger brother ,jacob4 #ab3ah4 ,for you are not come to a mountain that might be touched and a burning fire and a whirlwind and darkness and storm1 #ab3ai4 ,and the sound of a trumpet and the voice of words1 which they that had excused themselves1 that the word might not be spoken to them4 #ab3bj4 ,for they did not endure that which was said3 and if so much as a beast shall touch the mount1 it shall be stoned4 #ab3ba4 ,and so terrible was that which was seen1 ,moses said3 ,i am frighted1 and tremble4 #ab3bb4 ,but you are come to mount ,sion and to the city of the living ,god1 the heavenly ,jerusalem1 and to the company of many thousands of angels1 #ab3bc4 ,and to the church of the firstborn who are written in the heavens1 and to ,god the judge of all1 and to the spirits of the just made perfect1 #ab3bd4 ,and to ,jesus the mediator of the new testament1 and to the sprinkling of blood which speaketh better than that of ,abel4 #ab3be4 ,see that you refuse him not that speaketh4 ,for if they escaped not who refused him that spoke upon earth1 much more shall not we that turn away from him that speaketh to us from heaven4 #ab3bf4 ,whose voice then moved the earth2 but now he promiseth1 saying3 ,yet once more3 and ,i will move1 not only the earth1 but heaven also4 #ab3bg4 ,and in that he saith3 ,yet once more1 he signifieth the translation of the moveable things as made1 that those things may remain which are immoveable4 #ab3bh4 ,therefore1 receiving an immoveable kingdom1 we have grace3 whereby let us serve1 pleasing ,god1 with fear and reverence4 #ab3bi4 ,for our ,god is a consuming fire4 ,hebrews ,chapter #ac ,divers admonitions and exhortations4 #ac3a4 ,let the charity of the brotherhood abide in you4 #ac3b4 ,and hospitality do not forget3 for by this some1 being not aware of it1 have entertained angels4 #ac3c4 ,remember them that are in bands1 as if you were bound with them3 and them that labour1 as being yourselves also in the body4 #ac3d4 ,marriage honourable in all1 and the bed undefiled4 ,for fornicators and adulterers ,god will judge4 ,or1 ,let marriage be honourable in all444 ,that is1 in all things belonging to the marriage state4 ,this is a warning to married people1 not to abuse the sanctity of their state1 by any liberties or irregularities contrary thereunto4 ,now it does not follow from this text that all persons are obliged to marry1 even if the word omnibus were rendered1 in all persons1 instead of in all things3 for if it was a precept1 ,st4 ,paul himself would have transgressed it1 as he never married4 ,moreover1 those who have already made a vow to ,god to lead a single life1 should they attempt to marry1 they would incur their own damnation4 #a ,tim4 #e4 #ab4 #ac3e4 ,let your manners be without covetousness1 contented with such things as you have4 ,for he hath said3 ,i will not leave thee3 neither will ,i forsake thee4 #ac3f4 ,so that we may confidently say3 ,the ,lord is my helper3 ,i will not fear what man shall do to me4 #ac3g4 ,remember your prelates who have spoken the word of ,god to you3 whose faith follow1 considering the end of their conversation1 #ac3h4 ,jesus ,christ1 yesterday1 and today3 and the same for ever4 #ac3i4 ,be not led away with various and strange doctrines4 ,for it is best that the heart be established with grace1 not with meats3 which have not profited those that walk in them4 #ac3aj4 ,we have an altar whereof they have no power to eat who serve the tabernacle4 #ac3aa4 ,for the bodies of those beasts whose blood is brought into the holies by the high priest for sin are burned without the camp4 #ac3ab4 ,wherefore ,jesus also1 that he might sanctify the people by his own blood1 suffered without the gate4 #ac3ac4 ,let us go forth therefore to him without the camp1 bearing his reproach4 ,let us go forth therefore to him without the camp1 bearing his reproach444 ,that is1 bearing his cross4 ,it is an exhortation to them to be willing to suffer with ,christ1 reproaches1 persecutions1 and even death1 if they desire to partake of the benefit of his suffering for man's redemption4 #ac3ad4 ,for1 we have not here a lasting city3 but we seek one that is to come4 #ac3ae4 ,by him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise always to ,god1 that is to say1 the fruit of lips confessing to his name4 #ac3af4 ,and do not forget to do good and to impart3 for by such sacrifices ,god's favour is obtained4 #ac3ag4 ,obey your prelates and be subject to them4 ,for they watch as being to render an account of your souls3 that they may do this with joy and not with grief4 ,for this is not expedient for you4 #ac3ah4 ,pray for us4 ,for we trust we have a good conscience1 being willing to behave ourselves well in all things4 #ac3ai4 ,and ,i beseech you the more to do this1 that ,i may be restored to you the sooner4 #ac3bj4 ,and may the ,god of peace1 who brought again from the dead the great pastor of the sheep1 our ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 in the blood of the everlasting testament1 #ac3ba4 ,fit you in all goodness1 that you may do his will2 doing in you that which is well pleasing in his sight1 through ,jesus ,christ1 to whom is glory for ever and ever4 ,amen4 #ac3bb4 ,and ,i beseech you1 brethren1 that you suffer this word of consolation4 ,for ,i have written to you in a few words4 #ac3bc4 ,know ye that our brother ,timothy is set at liberty3 with whom 7if he come shortly7 ,i will see you4 #ac3bd4 ,salute all your prelates and all the saints4 ,the brethren from ,italy salute you4 #ac3be4 ,grace be with you all4 ,amen4
