to the faith4 ,they had a great veneration for ,st4 ,paul and supplied his wants when he was a prisoner in ,rome1 sending to him by ,epaphroditus1 by whom he sent this ,epistle2 in which he recommends charity1 unity and humility and warns them against false teachers1 whom he calls dogs and enemies of the cross of ,christ4 ,he also returns thanks for their benefactions4 ,it was written about twenty-nine years after our ,lord's ,ascension4 ,philippians ,chapter #a ,the apostle's affection for the ,philippians4 #a3a4 ,paul and ,timothy1 the servants of ,jesus ,christ3 to all the saints in ,christ ,jesus who are at ,philippi1 with the bishops and deacons4 #a3b4 ,grace be unto you and peace1 from ,god our ,father and from the ,lord ,jesus ,christ4 #a3c4 ,i give thanks to my ,god in every remembrance of you3 #a3d4 ,always in all my prayers making supplication for you all with joy3 #a3e4 ,for your communication in the gospel of ,christ1 from the first day unto now4 #a3f4 ,being confident of this very thing3 that he who hath begun a good work in you will perfect it unto the day of ,christ ,jesus4 #a3g4 ,as it is meet for me to think this for you all1 for that ,i have you in my heart2 and that1 in my bands and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel1 you all are partakers of my joy4 #a3h4 ,for ,god is my witness how ,i long after you all in the bowels of ,jesus ,christ4 #a3i4 ,and this ,i pray3 ,that your charity may more and more abound in knowledge and in all understanding3 #a3aj4 ,that you may approve the better things3 that you may be sincere and without offence unto the day of ,christ3 #a3aa4 ,filled with the fruit of justice1 through ,jesus ,christ1 unto the glory and praise of ,god4 #a3ab4 ,now1 brethren1 ,i desire you should know that the things which have happened to me have fallen out rather to the furtherance of the gospel3 #a3ac4 ,so that my bands are made manifest in ,christ1 in all the court and in all other places4 #a3ad4 ,and many of the brethren in the ,lord1 growing confident by my bands1 are much more bold to speak the word of ,god without fear4 #a3ae4 ,some indeed1 even out of envy and contention3 but some also for good will preach ,christ4 #a3af4 ,some out of charity1 knowing that ,i am set for the defence of the gospel4 #a3ag4 ,and some out of contention preach ,christ not sincerely3 supposing that they raise affliction to my bands4 #a3ah4 ,but what then8 ,so that by all means1 whether by occasion or by truth1 ,christ be preached3 in this also ,i rejoice1 yea1 and will rejoice4 #a3ai4 ,for ,i know that this shall fall out to me unto salvation1 through your prayer and the supply of the ,spirit of ,jesus ,christ1 #a3bj4 ,according to my expectation and hope2 that in nothing ,i shall be confounded3 but with all confidence1 as always1 so now also1 shall ,christ be magnified in my body1 whether it be by life or by death4 #a3ba4 ,for to me1 to live is ,christ3 and to die is gain4 #a3bb4 ,and if to live in the flesh3 this is to me the fruit of labour4 ,and what ,i shall choose ,i know not4 ,this is to me1 etc444 ,his meaning is1 that although his dying immediately for ,christ would be his gain1 by putting him presently in possession of heaven2 yet he is doubtful what he should choose1 because by staying longer in the flesh1 he should be more beneficial to the souls of his neighbours4 #a3bc4 ,but ,i am straitened between two3 having a desire to be dissolved and to be with ,christ1 a thing by far the better4 #a3bd4 ,but to abide still in the flesh is needful for you4 #a3be4 ,and having this confidence1 ,i know that ,i shall abide and continue with you all1 for your furtherance and joy of faith3 #a3bf4 ,that your rejoicing may abound in ,christ ,jesus for me1 by my coming to you again4 #a3bg4 ,only let your conversation be worthy of the gospel of ,christ3 that1 whether ,i come and see you1 or1 being absent1 may hear of you1 that you stand fast in one spirit1 with one mind labouring together for the faith of the gospel4 #a3bh4 ,and in nothing be ye terrified by the adversaries3 which to them is a cause of perdition1 but to you of salvation1 and this from ,god4 #a3bi4 ,for unto you it is given for ,christ1 not only to believe in him1 but also to suffer for him3 #a3cj4 ,having the same conflict as that which you have seen in me and now have heard of me4 ,philippians ,chapter #b ,he recommends them to unity and humility1 and to work out their salvation with fear and trembling4 #b3a4 ,if there be therefore any consolation in ,christ1 if any comfort of charity1 if any society of the spirit1 if any bowels of commiseration3 #b3b4 ,fulfil ye my joy1 that you be of one mind1 having the same charity1 being of one accord1 agreeing in sentiment4 #b3c4 ,let nothing be done through contention3 neither by vain glory4 ,but in humility1 let each esteem others better than themselves3 #b3d4 ,each one not considering the things that are his own1 but those that are other men's4 #b3e4 ,for let this mind be in you1 which was also in ,christ ,jesus3 #b3f4 ,who being in the form of ,god1 thought it not robbery to be equal with ,god3 #b3g4 ,but emptied himself1 taking the form of a servant1 being made in the likeness of men1 and in habit found as a man4 ,emptied himself1 exinanivit444 made himself as of no account4 #b3h4 ,he humbled himself1 becoming obedient unto death1 even to the death of the cross4 #b3i4 ,for which cause1 ,god also hath exalted him and hath given him a name which is above all names3 #b3aj4 ,that in the name of ,jesus every knee should bow1 of those that are in heaven1 on earth1 and under the earth3 #b3aa4 ,and that every tongue should confess that the ,lord ,jesus ,christ is in the glory of ,god the ,father4 #b3ab4 ,wherefore1 my dearly beloved1 7as you have always obeyed1 not as in my presence only but much more now in my absence7 with fear and trembling work out your salvation4 ,with fear1 etc444 ,this is against the false faith1 and presumptuous security of modern sectaries4 #b3ac4 ,for it is ,god who worketh in you1 both to will and to accomplish1 according to his good will4 #b3ad4 ,and do ye all things without murmurings and hesitations3 #b3ae4 ,that you may be blameless and sincere children of ,god1 without reproof1 in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation3 among whom you shine as lights in the world4 #b3af4 ,holding forth the word of life to my glory in the day of ,christ3 because ,i have not run in vain1 nor laboured in vain4 #b3ag4 ,yea1 and if ,i be made a victim upon the sacrifice and service of your faith1 ,i rejoice and congratulate with you all4 #b3ah4 ,and for the selfsame thing1 do you also rejoice and congratulate with me4 #b3ai4 ,and ,i hope in the ,lord ,jesus to send ,timothy unto you shortly1 that ,i also may be of good comfort1 when ,i know the things concerning you4 #b3bj4 ,for ,i have no man so of the same mind1 who with sincere affection is solicitous for you4 #b3ba4 ,for all seek the things that are their own not the things that are ,jesus ,christ's4 #b3bb4 ,now know ye the proof of him3 that as a son with the father1 so hath he served with me in the gospel4 #b3bc4 ,him therefore ,i hope to send unto you immediately3 so soon as ,i shall see how it will go with me4 #b3bd4 ,and ,i trust in the ,lord that ,i myself also shall come to you shortly4 #b3be4 ,but ,i have thought it necessary to send to you ,epaphroditus1 my brother and fellow labourer and fellow soldier1 but your apostle3 and he that hath ministered to my wants4 #b3bf4 ,for indeed he longed after you all3 and was sad1 for that you had heard that he was sick4 #b3bg4 ,for indeed he was sick1 nigh unto death3 but ,god had mercy on him4 ,and not only on him1 but on me also1 lest ,i should have sorrow upon sorrow4 #b3bh4 ,therefore1 ,i sent him the more speedily3 that seeing him again1 you may rejoice1 and ,i may be without sorrow4 #b3bi4 ,receive him therefore with all joy in the ,lord3 and treat with honour such as he is4 #b3cj4 ,because for the work of ,christ he came to the point of death3 delivering his life1 that he might fulfil that which on your part was wanting towards my service4 ,philippians ,chapter #c ,he warneth them against false teachers4 ,he counts all other things loss1 that he may gain ,christ4 #c3a4 ,as to the rest1 my brethren1 rejoice in the ,lord4 ,to write the same things to you1 to me indeed is not wearisome1 but to you is necessary4 #c3b4 ,beware of dogs3 beware of evil workers3 beware of the concision4 #c3c4 ,for we are the circumcision1 who in spirit serve ,god and glory in ,christ ,jesus1 not having confidence in the flesh4 #c3d4 ,though ,i might also have confidence in the flesh4 ,if any other thinketh he may have confidence in the flesh1 ,i more3 #c3e4 ,being circumcised the eighth day1 of the stock of ,israel1 of the tribe of ,benjamin1 an ,hebrew of the ,hebrews4 ,according to the law1 a ,pharisee3 #c3f4 ,according to zeal1 persecuting the church of ,god3 ,according to the justice that is in the law1 conversing without blame4 #c3g4 ,but the things that were gain to me1 the same ,i have counted loss for ,christ4 #c3h4 ,furthermore1 ,i count all things to be but loss for the excellent knowledge of ,jesus ,christ1 my ,lord3 for whom ,i have suffered the loss of all things and count them but as dung1 that ,i may gain ,christ4 #c3i4 ,and may be found in him1 not having my justice1 which is of the law1 but that which is of the faith of ,christ ,jesus1 which is of ,god3 justice in faith4 #c3aj4 ,that ,i may know him and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings3 being made conformable to his death1 #c3aa4 ,if by any means ,i may attain to the resurrection which is from the dead4 #c3ab4 ,not as though ,i had already attained1 or were already perfect3 but ,i follow after1 if ,i may by any means apprehend1 wherein ,i am also apprehended by ,christ ,jesus4 #c3ac4 ,brethren1 ,i do not count myself to have apprehended4 ,but one thing ,i do3 ,forgetting the things that are behind and stretching forth myself to those that are before1 #c3ad4 ,i press towards the mark1 to the prize of the supernal vocation of ,god in ,christ ,jesus4 #c3ae4 ,let us therefore1 as many as are perfect1 be thus minded3 and if in any thing you be otherwise minded1 this also ,god will reveal to you1 #c3af4 ,nevertheless1 whereunto we are come1 that we be of the same mind1 let us also continue in the same rule4 #c3ag4 ,be ye followers of me1 brethren3 and observe them who walk so as you have our model4 #c3ah4 ,for many walk1 of whom ,i have told you often 7and now tell you weeping7 that they are enemies of the cross of ,christ3 #c3ai4 ,whose end is destruction3 whose ,god is their belly3 and whose glory is in their shame3 who mind earthly things4 #c3bj4 ,but our conversation is in heaven3 from whence also we look for the ,saviour1 our ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 #c3ba4 ,who will reform the body of our lowness1 made like to the body of his glory1 according to the operation whereby also he is able to subdue all things unto himself4 ,philippians ,chapter #d ,he exhorts them to perseverance in all good and acknowledges their charitable contributions to him4 #d3a4 ,therefore my dearly beloved brethren and most desired1 my joy and my crown3 so stand fast in the ,lord1 my dearly beloved4 #d3b4 ,i beg of ,evodia and ,i beseech ,syntyche to be of one mind in the ,lord4 #d3c4 ,and ,i entreat thee also1 my sincere companion1 help those women who have laboured with me in the gospel1 with ,clement and the rest of my fellow labourers1 whose names are in the book of life4 #d3d4 ,rejoice in the ,lord always3 again1 ,i say1 rejoice4 #d3e4 ,let your modesty be known to all men4 ,the ,lord is nigh4 #d3f4 ,be nothing solicitous3 but in every thing1 by prayer and supplication1 with thanksgiving1 let your petitions be made known to ,god4 #d3g4 ,and the peace of ,god1 which surpasseth all understanding1 keep your hearts and minds in ,christ ,jesus4 #d3h4 ,for the rest1 brethren1 whatsoever things are true1 whatsoever modest1 whatsoever just1 whatsoever holy1 whatsoever lovely1 whatsoever of good fame1 if there be any virtue1 if any praise of discipline3 think on these things4 ,for the rest1 brethren1 whatsoever things are true1 etc444 ,here the apostle enumerates general precepts of morality1 which they ought to practise4 ,whatsoever things are true444 in words1 in promises1 in lawful oaths1 etc41 he commands rectitude of mind1 and sincerity of heart4 ,whatsoever modest444 by these words he prescribes gravity in manners1 modesty in dress1 and decency in conversation4 ,whatsoever just444 ,that is1 in dealing with others1 in buying or selling1 in trade or business1 to be fair and honest4 ,whatsoever holy444 by these words may be understood1 that those who are in a religious state professed1 or in holy orders1 should lead a life of sanctity and chastity1 according to the vows they make2 but these words being also applied to those in the world1 indicate the virtuous life they are bound by the divine commandments to follow4 ,whatsoever lovely444 that is1 to practise those good offices in society1 that procure us the esteem and good will of our neighbours4 ,whatsoever of good fame444 ,that is1 that by our conduct and behaviour we should edify our neighbours1 and give them good example by our actions4 ,if there be any virtue1 if any praise of discipline444 that those in error1 by seeing the morality and good discipline of the true religion1 may be converted4 ,and finally1 the apostle commands1 not only the ,philippians1 but all ,christians1 to think on these things444 that is1 to make it their study and concern that the peace of ,god might be with them4 #d3i4 ,the things which you have both learned and received and heard and seen in me1 these do ye3 and the ,god of peace shall be with you4 #d3aj4 ,now ,i rejoice in the ,lord exceedingly that now at length your thought for me hath flourished again1 as you did also think2 but you were busied4 #d3aa4 ,i speak not as it were for want4 ,for ,i have learned1 in whatsoever state ,i am1 to be content therewith4 #d3ab4 ,i know both how to be brought low1 and ,i know how to abound 7every where and in all things ,i am instructed73 both to be full and to be hungry3 both to abound and to suffer need4 #d3ac4 ,i can do all things in him who strengtheneth me4 #d3ad4 ,nevertheless1 you have done well in communicating to my tribulation4 #d3ae4 ,and you also know1 ,o ,philippians1 that in the beginning of the gospel1 when ,i departed from ,macedonia1 no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving1 but you only4 #d3af4 ,for unto ,thessalonica also you sent once and again for my use4 #d3ag4 ,not that ,i seek the gift3 but ,i seek the fruit that may abound to your account4 #d3ah4 ,but ,i have all and abound3 ,i am filled1 having received from ,epaphroditus the things you sent1 an odour of sweetness1 an acceptable sacrifice1 pleasing to ,god4 #d3ai4 ,and may my ,god supply all your want1 according to his riches in glory in ,christ ,jesus4 #d3bj4 ,now to ,god and our ,father be glory1 world without end4 ,amen4 #d3ba4 ,salute ye every saint in ,christ ,jesus4 #d3bb4 ,the brethren who are with me salute you4 ,all the saints salute you3 especially they that are of ,caesar's household4 #d3bc4 ,the grace of our ,lord ,jesus ,christ be with your spirit4 ,amen4
