who from being a publican1 that is1 a taxgatherer1 was called by our ,saviour to the ,apostleship3 in that profession his name is ,levi4 7,luke #e4bg1 and ,mark #b4ad47 ,he was the first of the ,evangelists that wrote the ,gospel1 and that in ,hebrew or ,syro-,chaldaic which the ,jews in ,palestine spoke at that time4 ,the original is not now extant2 but it was translated in the time of the ,apostles into ,greek1 that version was of equal authority4 ,he wrote about six years after the ,lord's ,ascension4 ,matthew ,chapter #a ,the genealogy of ,christ3 he is conceived and born of a gives us rather the pedigree of ,st4 ,joseph1 than that of the blessed ,virgin1 to conform to the custom of the ,hebrews1 who in their genealogies took no notice of women2 but as they were near akin1 the pedigree of the one sheweth that of the other4 #a3ag4 ,so all the generations from ,abraham to ,david1 are fourteen generations4 ,and from ,david to the transmigration of ,babylon1 are fourteen generations3 and from the transmigration of ,babylon to ,christ are fourteen generations4 #a3ah4 ,now the generation of ,christ was in this wise4 ,when as his mother ,mary was espoused to ,joseph1 before they came together1 she was found with child1 of the ,holy ,ghost4 #a3ai4 ,whereupon ,joseph her husband1 being a just man1 and not willing publicly to expose her1 was minded to put her away privately4 #a3bj4 ,but while he thought on these things1 behold the ,angel of the ,lord appeared to him in his sleep1 saying3 ,joseph1 son of ,david1 fear not to take unto thee ,mary thy wife1 for that which is conceived in her1 is of the ,holy ,ghost4 #a3ba4 ,and she shall bring forth a son3 and thou shalt call his name ,jesus4 ,for he shall save his people from their sins4 #a3bb4 ,now all this was done that it might be fulfilled which the ,lord spoke by the prophet1 saying3 #a3bc4 ,behold a virgin shall be with child1 and bring forth a son1 and they shall call his name ,emmanuel1 which being interpreted is1 ,god with us4 #a3bd4 ,and ,joseph rising up from sleep1 did as the angel of the ,lord had commanded him1 and took unto him his wife4 #a3be4 ,and he knew her not till she brought forth her first born son3 and he called his name ,jesus4 ,till she brought forth her firstborn son444 ,from these words ,helvidius and other heretics most impiously inferred that the blessed ,virgin ,mary had other children besides ,christ2 but ,st4 ,jerome shews1 by divers examples1 that this expression of the ,evangelist was a manner of speaking usual among the ,hebrews1 to denote by the word until1 only what is done1 without any regard to the future4 ,thus it is said1 ,genesis #h4 #f and #g1 that ,noe sent forth a raven1 which went forth1 and did not return till the waters were dried up on the earth4 ,that is1 did not return any more4 ,also ,isaias #df4 #d1 ,god says3 ,i am till you grow old4 ,who dare infer that ,god should then cease to be3 ,also in the first book of ,machabees #e4 #ed1 ,and they went up to mount ,sion with joy and gladness1 and offered holocausts1 because not one of them was slain till they had returned in peace4 ,that is1 not one was slain before or after they had returned4 ,god saith to his divine ,son3 ,sit on my right hand till ,i make thy enemies thy footstool4 ,shall he sit no longer after his enemies are subdued8 ,yea and for all eternity4 ,st4 ,jerome also proves by ,scripture examples1 that an only begotten son1 was also called firstborn1 or first begotten3 because according to the law1 the firstborn males were to be consecrated to ,god2 ,sanctify unto me1 saith the ,lord1 every firstborn that openeth the womb among the children of ,israel1 etc4 ,ex4 #ac4 #b4 ,matthew ,chapter #b ,the offerings of the wise men3 the flight into ,egypt3 the massacre of the ,innocents4 #b3a4 ,when ,jesus therefore was born in ,bethlehem of ,juda1 in the days of king ,herod1 behold1 there came wise men from the ,east to ,jerusalem1 #b3b4 ,saying3 ,where is he that is born king of the ,jews8 ,for we have seen his star in the ,east1 and are come to adore him4 #b3c4 ,and king ,herod hearing this1 was troubled1 and all ,jerusalem with him4 #b3d4 ,and assembling together all the chief priests and the scribes of the people1 he inquired of them where ,christ should be born4 #b3e4 ,but they said to him3 ,in ,bethlehem of ,juda4 ,for so it is written by the prophet3 #b3f4 ,and thou ,bethlehem the land of ,juda art not the least among the princes of ,juda3 for out of thee shall come forth the captain that shall rule my people ,israel4 #b3g4 ,then ,herod1 privately calling the wise men learned diligently of them the time of the star which appeared to them2 #b3h4 ,and sending them into ,bethlehem1 said3 ,go and diligently inquire after the child1 and when you have found him1 bring me word again1 that ,i also may come and adore him4 #b3i4 ,who having heard the king1 went their way2 and behold the star which they had seen in the ,east1 went before them1 until it came and stood over where the child was4 #b3aj4 ,and seeing the star they rejoiced with exceeding great joy4 #b3aa4 ,and entering into the house1 they found the child with ,mary his mother1 and falling down they adored him3 and opening their treasures1 they offered him gifts2 gold1 frankincense1 and myrrh4 #b3ab4 ,and having received an answer in sleep that they should not return to ,herod1 they went back another way into their country4 #b3ac4 ,and after they were departed1 behold an angel of the ,lord appeared in sleep to ,joseph1 saying3 ,arise1 and take the child and his mother1 and fly into ,egypt3 and be there until ,i shall tell thee4 ,for it will come to pass that ,herod will seek the child to destroy him4 #b3ad4 ,who arose1 and took the child and his mother by night1 and retired into ,egypt3 and he was there until the death of ,herod3 #b3ae4 ,that it might be fulfilled which the ,lord spoke by the prophet1 saying3 ,out of ,egypt have ,i called my son4 #b3af4 ,then ,herod perceiving that he was deluded by the wise men1 was exceeding angry3 and sending killed all the menchildren that were in ,bethlehem1 and in all the borders thereof1 from two years old and under1 according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men4 #b3ag4 ,then was fulfilled that which was spoken by ,jeremias the prophet1 saying3 #b3ah4 ,a voice in ,rama was heard1 lamentation and great mourning2 ,rachel bewailing her children1 and would not be comforted1 because they are not4 #b3ai4 ,but when ,herod was dead1 behold an angel of the ,lord appeared in sleep to ,joseph in ,egypt1 #b3bj4 ,saying3 ,arise1 and take the child and his mother1 and go into the land of ,israel4 ,for they are dead that sought the life of the child4 #b3ba4 ,who arose1 and took the child and his mother1 and came into the land of ,israel4 #b3bb4 ,but hearing that ,archclaus reigned in ,judea in the room of ,herod his father1 he was afraid to go thither3 and being warned in sleep retired into the quarters of ,galilee4 #b3bc4 ,and coming he dwelt in a city called ,nazareth3 that it might be fulfilled which was said by the prophets3 ,that he shall be called a ,nazarene4 ,matthew ,chapter #c ,the preaching of ,john3 ,christ is baptized4 #c3a4 ,and in those days cometh ,john the ,baptist preaching in the desert of ,judea4 #c3b4 ,and saying3 ,do penance3 for the kingdom of heaven is at hand4 ,do penance444 ,paenitentiam agite4 ,which word1 according to the use of the scriptures and the holy fathers1 does not only signify repentance and amendment of life1 but also punishing past sins by fasting1 and such like penitential exercises4 #c3c4 ,for this is he that was spoken of by ,isaias the prophet1 saying3 ,a voice of one crying in the desert1 ,prepare ye the way of the ,lord1 make straight his paths4 #c3d4 ,and the same ,john had his garment of camel's hair1 and a leathern girdle about his loins3 and his meat was locusts and wild honey4 #c3e4 ,then went out to him ,jerusalem and all ,judea1 and all the country about ,jordan3 #c3f4 ,and were baptized by him in the ,jordan1 confessing their sins4 #c3g4 ,and seeing many of the ,pharisees and ,sadducees coming to his baptism1 he said to them3 ,ye brood of vipers1 who hath shewed you to flee from the wrath to come8 ,pharisees and ,sadducees444 ,these were two sects among the ,jews3 of which the former were for the most part notorious hypocrites2 the latter1 a kind of freethinkers in matters of religion4 #c3h4 ,bring forth therefore fruit worthy of penance4 #c3i4 ,and think not to say within yourselves1 ,we have ,abraham for our father4 ,for ,i tell you that ,god is able of these stones to raise up children to ,abraham4 #c3aj4 ,for now the axe is laid to the root of the trees4 ,every tree therefore that doth not yield good fruit1 shall be cut down1 and cast into the fire4 #c3aa4 ,i indeed baptize you in water unto penance1 but he that shall come after me1 is mightier than ,i1 whose shoes ,i am not worthy to bear3 he shall baptize you in the ,holy ,ghost and fire4 #c3ab4 ,whose fan is in his hand1 and he will thoroughly cleanse his floor and gather his wheat into the barn2 but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire4 #c3ac4 ,then cometh ,jesus from ,galilee to the ,jordan1 unto ,john1 to be baptized by him4 #c3ad4 ,but ,john stayed him1 saying3 ,i ought to be baptized by thee1 and comest thou to me8 #c3ae4 ,and ,jesus answering1 said to him3 ,suffer it to be so now4 ,for so it becometh us to fulfil all justice4 ,then he suffered him4 #c3af4 ,and ,jesus being baptized1 forthwith came out of the water3 and lo1 the heavens were opened to him3 and he saw the ,spirit of ,god descending as a dove1 and coming upon him4 #c3ag4 ,and behold a voice from heaven saying3 ,this is my beloved ,son1 in whom ,i am well pleased4 ,matthew ,chapter #d ,christ's fast of forty days3 ,he is tempted4 ,he begins to preach1 to call disciples to him1 and to work miracles4 #d3a4 ,then ,jesus was led by the spirit into the desert1 to be tempted by the devil4 #d3b4 ,and when he had fasted forty days and forty nights1 afterwards he was hungry4 #d3c4 ,and the tempter coming said to him3 ,if thou be the ,son of ,god1 command that these stones be made bread4 #d3d4 ,who answered and said3 ,it is written1 ,not in bread alone doth man live1 but in every word that proceedeth from the mouth of ,god4 #d3e4 ,then the devil took him up into the holy city1 and set him upon the pinnacle of the temple1 #d3f4 ,and said to him3 ,if thou be the ,son of ,god1 cast thyself down1 for it is written3 ,that he hath given his angels charge over thee1 and in their hands shall they bear thee up1 lest perhaps thou dash thy foot against a stone4 #d3g4 ,jesus said to him3 ,it is written again3 ,thou shalt not tempt the ,lord thy ,god4 #d3h4 ,again the devil took him up into a very high mountain1 and shewed him all the kingdoms of the world1 and the glory of them1 ,shewed him1 etc444 ,that is1 pointed out to him where each kingdom lay2 and set forth in words what was most glorious and admirable in each of them4 ,or also set before his eyes1 as it were in a large map1 a lively representation of all those kingdoms4 #d3i4 ,and said to him3 ,all these will ,i give thee1 if falling down thou wilt adore me4 #d3aj4 ,then ,jesus saith to him3 ,begone1 ,satan3 for it is written3 ,the ,lord thy ,god shalt thou adore1 and him only shalt thou serve4 #d3aa4 ,then the devil left him2 and behold angels came and ministered to him4 #d3ab4 ,and when ,jesus had heard that ,john was delivered up1 he retired into ,galilee3 #d3ac4 ,and leaving the city ,nazareth1 he came and dwelt in ,capharnaum on the sea coast1 in the borders of ,zabulon and of ,nephthalim2 #d3ad4 ,that it might be fulfilled which was said by ,isaias the prophet3 #d3ae4 ,land of ,zabulon and land of ,nephthalim1 the way of the sea beyond the ,jordan1 ,galilee of the ,gentiles3 #d3af4 ,the people that sat in darkness1 hath seen great light3 and to them that sat in the region of the shadow of death1 light is sprung up4 #d3ag4 ,from that time ,jesus began to preach1 and to say3 ,do penance1 for the kingdom of heaven is at hand4 #d3ah4 ,and ,jesus walking by the sea of ,galilee1 saw two brethren1 ,simon who is called ,peter1 and ,andrew his brother1 casting a net into the sea 7for they were fishers74 #d3ai4 ,and he saith to them3 ,come ye after me1 and ,i will make you to be fishers of men4 #d3bj4 ,and they immediately leaving their nets1 followed him4 #d3ba4 ,and going on from thence1 he saw other two brethren1 ,james the son of ,zebedee1 and ,john his brother1 in a ship with ,zebedee their father1 mending their nets3 and he called them4 #d3bb4 ,and they forthwith left their nets and father1 and followed him4 #d3bc4 ,and ,jesus went about all ,galilee1 teaching in their synagogues1 and preaching the gospel of the kingdom3 and healing all manner of sickness and every infirmity1 among the people4 #d3bd4 ,and his fame went throughout all ,syria1 and they presented to him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments1 and such as were possessed by devils1 and lunatics1 and those that had the palsy1 and he cured them3 #d3be4 ,and much people followed him from ,galilee1 and from ,decapolis1 and from ,jerusalem1 and from ,judea1 and from beyond the ,jordan4 ,matthew ,chapter #e ,christ's sermon upon the mount4 ,the eight beatitudes4 #e3a4 ,and seeing the multitudes1 he went up into a mountain1 and when he was set down1 his disciples came unto him4 #e3b4 ,and opening his mouth he taught them1 saying3 #e3c4 ,blessed are the poor in spirit3 for theirs is the kingdom of heaven4 ,the poor in spirit444 ,that is1 the humble2 and they whose spirit is not set upon riches4 #e3d4 ,blessed are the meek3 for they shall possess the land4 #e3e4 ,blessed are they that mourn3 for they shall be comforted4 #e3f4 ,blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice3 for they shall have their fill4 #e3g4 ,blessed are the merciful3 for they shall obtain mercy4 #e3h4 ,blessed are the clean of heart3 they shall see ,god4 #e3i4 ,blessed are the peacemakers3 for they shall be called the children of ,god4 #e3aj4 ,blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice' sake3 for theirs is the kingdom of heaven4 #e3aa4 ,blessed are ye when they shall revile you1 and persecute you1 and speak all that is evil against you1 untruly1 for my sake3 #e3ab4 ,be glad and rejoice for your reward is very great in heaven4 ,for so they persecuted the prophets that were before you4 #e3ac4 ,you are the salt of the earth4 ,but if the salt lose its savour1 wherewith shall it be salted8 ,it is good for nothing anymore but to be cast out1 and to be trodden on by men4 #e3ad4 ,you are the light of the world4 ,a city seated on a mountain cannot be hid4 #e3ae4 ,neither do men light a candle and put it under a bushel1 but upon a candlestick1 that it may shine to all that are in the house4 #e3af4 ,so let your light shine before men1 that they may see your good works1 and glorify your ,father who is in heaven4 #e3ag4 ,do not think that ,i am come to destroy the law1 or the prophets4 ,i am not come to destroy1 but to fulfil4 ,to fulfil444 ,by accomplishing all the figures and prophecies2 and perfecting all that was imperfect4 #e3ah4 ,for amen ,i say unto you1 till heaven and earth pass1 one jot1 or one tittle shall not pass of the law1 till all be fulfilled4 ,amen444 ,that is1 assuredly of a truth444 ,this ,hebrew word1 amen1 is here retained by the example and authority of all the four ,evangelists4 ,it is used by our ,lord as a strong asseveration1 and affirmation of the truth4 #e3ai4 ,he therefore that shall break one of these least commandments1 and shall so teach men shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven4 ,but he that shall do and teach1 he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven4 #e3bj4 ,for ,i tell you1 that unless your justice abound more than that of the scribes and ,pharisees1 you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven4 ,the scribes and ,pharisees444 ,the scribes were the doctors of the law of ,moses3 the ,pharisees were a precise set of men1 making profession of a more exact observance of the law3 and upon that account greatly esteemed among the people4 #e3ba4 ,you have heard that it was said to them of old3 ,thou shalt not kill4 ,and whosoever shall kill1 shall be in danger of the judgment4 ,shall be in danger of the judgment444 ,that is1 shall deserve to be punished by that lesser tribunal among the ,jews1 called the ,judgment1 which took cognizance of such crimes4 #e3bb4 ,but ,i say to you1 that whosoever is angry with his brother1 shall be in danger of the judgment4 ,and whosoever shall say to his brother1 ,raca1 shall be in danger of the council4 ,and whosoever shall say1 ,thou fool1 shall be in danger of hell fire4 ,raca444 ,a word expressing great indignation or contempt4 ,shall be in danger of the council444 ,that is1 shall deserve to be punished by the highest court of judicature1 called the ,council1 or ,sanhedrim1 consisting of seventy-two persons1 where the highest causes were tried and judged1 which was at ,jerusalem4 ,thou fool444 ,this was then looked upon as a heinous injury1 when uttered with contempt1 spite1 or malice3 and therefore is here so severely condemned4 ,shall be in danger of hell fire444 literally1 according to the ,greek1 shall deserve to be cast into the ,gehenna of fire4 ,which words our ,saviour made use of to express the fire and punishments of hell4 #e3bc4 ,if therefore thou offer thy gift at the altar1 and there thou remember that thy brother hath anything against thee2 #e3bd4 ,leave there thy offering before the altar1 and go first to be reconciled to thy brother1 and then coming thou shalt offer thy gift4 #e3be4 ,be at agreement with thy adversary betimes1 whilst thou art in the way with him3 lest perhaps the adversary deliver thee to the judge1 and the judge deliver thee to the officer1 and thou be cast into prison4 #e3bf4 ,amen ,i say to thee1 thou shalt not go out from thence till thou repay the last farthing4 #e3bg4 ,you have heard that it was said to them of old3 ,thou shalt not commit adultery4 #e3bh4 ,but ,i say to you1 that whosoever shall look on a woman to lust after her1 hath already committed adultery with her in his heart4 #e3bi4 ,and if thy right eye scandalize thee1 pluck it out and cast it from thee4 ,for it is expedient for thee that one of thy members should perish1 rather than thy whole body be cast into hell4 ,scandalize thee444 ,that is1 if it be a stumblingblock1 or occasion of sin to thee4 ,by which we are taught to fly the immediate occasions of sin1 though they be as dear to us1 or as necessary as a hand or an eye4 #e3cj4 ,and if thy right hand scandalize thee1 cut it off1 and cast it from thee3 for it is expedient for thee that one of thy members should perish1 rather than that thy whole body go into hell4 #e3ca4 ,and it hath been said1 ,whosoever shall put away his wife1 let him give her a bill of divorce4 #e3cb4 ,but ,i say to you1 that whosoever shall put away his wife1 excepting the cause of fornication1 maketh her to commit adultery3 and he that shall marry her that is put away1 committeth adultery4 #e3cc4 ,again you have heard that it was said to them of old1 thou shalt not forswear thyself3 but thou shalt perform thy oaths to the ,lord4 #e3cd4 ,but ,i say to you not to swear at all1 neither by heaven for it is the throne of ,god3 ,not to swear at all444 ,it is not forbid to swear in truth1 justice and judgment2 to the honour of ,god1 or our own or neighbour's just defence3 but only to swear rashly1 or profanely1 in common discourse1 and without necessity4 #e3ce4 ,nor by the earth1 for it is his footstool3 nor by ,jerusalem1 for it is the city of the great king3 #e3cf4 ,neither shalt thou swear by thy head1 because thou canst not make one hair white or black4 #e3cg4 ,but let your speech be yea1 yea3 no1 no3 and that which is over and above these1 is of evil4 #e3ch4 ,you have heard that it hath been said3 ,an eye for an eye1 and a tooth for a tooth4 #e3ci4 ,but ,i say to you not to resist evil3 but if one strike thee on thy right cheek1 turn to him also the other3 ,not to resist evil1 etc444 ,what is here commanded1 is a ,christian patience under injuries and affronts1 and to be willing even to suffer still more1 rather than to indulge the desire of revenge3 but what is further added does not strictly oblige according to the letter1 for neither did ,christ nor ,st4 ,paul turn the other cheek4 ,st4 ,john #ah41 and ,acts #bc4 #e3dj4 ,and if a man will contend with thee in judgment1 and take away thy coat1 let go thy cloak also unto him4 #e3da4 ,and whosoever will force thee one mile1 go with him other two4 #e3db4 ,give to him that asketh of thee1 and from him that would borrow of thee turn not away4 #e3dc4 ,you have heard that it hath been said1 ,thou shalt love thy neighbour1 and hate thy enemy4 #e3dd4 ,but ,i say to you1 ,love your enemies3 do good to them that hate you3 and pray for them that persecute and calumniate you3 #e3de4 ,that you may be the children of your ,father who is in heaven1 who maketh his sun to rise upon the good1 and bad1 and raineth upon the just and the unjust4 #e3df4 ,for if you love them that love you1 what reward shall you have8 do not even the publicans this8 ,the publicans444 ,these were the gatherers of the public taxes3 a set of men1 odious and infamous among the ,jews1 for their extortions and injustice4 #e3dg4 ,and if you salute your brethren only1 what do you more8 do not also the heathens this8 #e3dh4 ,be you therefore perfect1 as also your heavenly ,father is perfect4 ,matthew ,chapter #f ,a continuation of the sermon on the mount4 #f3a4 ,take heed that you do not your justice before men1 to be seen by them3 otherwise you shall not have a reward of your ,father who is in heaven4 ,your justice444 that is1 works of justice2 viz41 fasting1 prayer1 and almsdeeds2 which ought to be performed not out of ostentation1 or a view to please men1 but solely to please ,god4 #f3b4 ,therefore when thou dost an alms-deed1 sound not a trumpet before thee1 as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets1 that they may be honoured by men4 ,amen ,i say to you1 they have received their reward4 #f3c4 ,but when thou dost alms1 let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doth4 #f3d4 ,that thy alms may be in secret1 and thy ,father who seeth in secret will repay thee4 #f3e4 ,and when ye pray1 you shall not be as the hypocrites1 that love to stand and pray in the synagogues and corners of the streets1 that they may be seen by men3 ,amen ,i say to you1 they have received their reward4 #f3f4 ,but thou when thou shalt pray1 enter into thy chamber1 and having shut the door1 pray to thy ,father in secret1 and thy father who seeth in secret will repay thee4 #f3g4 ,and when you are praying1 speak not much1 as the heathens4 ,for they think that in their much speaking they may be heard4 #f3h4 ,be not you therefore like to them for your ,father knoweth what is needful for you1 before you ask him4 #f3i4 ,thus therefore shall you pray3 ,our ,father who art in heaven1 hallowed be thy name4 #f3aj4 ,thy kingdom come4 ,thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven4 #f3aa4 ,give us this day our supersubstantial bread4 ,supersubstantial bread444 ,in ,st4 ,luke the same word is rendered daily bread4 ,it is understood of the bread of life1 which we receive in the ,blessed ,sacrament4 #f3ab4 ,and forgive us our debts1 as we also forgive our debtors4 #f3ac4 ,and lead us not into temptation4 ,but deliver us from evil4 ,amen4 ,lead us not into temptation444 ,that is1 suffer us not to be overcome by temptation4 #f3ad4 ,for if you will forgive men their offences1 your heavenly ,father will forgive you also your offences4 #f3ae4 ,but if you will not forgive men1 neither will your ,father forgive you your offences4 #f3af4 ,and when you fast1 be not as the hypocrites1 sad4 ,for they disfigure their faces1 that they may appear unto men to fast4 ,amen ,i say to you1 they have received their reward4 #f3ag4 ,but thou1 when thou fastest anoint thy head1 and wash thy face2 #f3ah4 ,that thou appear not to men to fast1 but to thy ,father who is in secret3 and thy ,father who seeth in secret1 will repay thee4 #f3ai4 ,lay not up to yourselves treasures on earth3 where the rust1 and moth consume1 and where thieves break through1 and steal4 #f3bj4 ,but lay up to yourselves treasures in heaven3 where neither the rust nor moth doth consume1 and where thieves do not break through1 nor steal4 #f3ba4 ,for where thy treasure is1 there is thy heart also4 #f3bb4 ,the light of thy body is thy eye4 ,if thy eye be single1 thy whole body shall be lightsome4 #f3bc4 ,but if thy eye be evil thy whole body shall be darksome4 ,if then the light that is in thee1 be darkness3 the darkness itself how great shall it be6 #f3bd4 ,no man can serve two masters4 ,for either he will hate the one1 and love the other3 or he will sustain the one1 and despise the other4 ,you cannot serve ,god and mammon4 ,mammon444 ,that is1 riches1 worldly interest4 #f3be4 ,therefore ,i say to you1 be not solicitous for your life1 what you shall eat1 nor for your body1 what you shall put on4 ,is not the life more than the meat3 and the body more than the raiment8 #f3bf4 ,behold the birds of the air1 for they neither sow1 nor do they reap1 nor gather into barns3 and your heavenly ,father feedeth them4 ,are not you of much more value than they8 #f3bg4 ,and which of you by taking thought1 can add to his stature one cubit8 #f3bh4 ,and for raiment why are you solicitous8 ,consider the lilies of the field1 how they grow3 they labour not1 neither do they spin4 #f3bi4 ,but ,i say to you1 that not even ,solomon in all his glory was arrayed as one of these4 #f3cj4 ,and if the grass of the field1 which is to day1 and to morrow is cast into the oven1 ,god doth so clothe3 how much more you1 ,o ye of little faith8 #f3ca4 ,be not solicitous therefore1 saying3 ,what shall we eat3 or what shall we drink1 or wherewith shall we be clothed8 #f3cb4 ,for after all these things do the heathens seek4 ,for your ,father knoweth that you have need of all these things4 #f3cc4 ,seek ye therefore first the kingdom of ,god1 and his justice1 and all these things shall be added unto you4 #f3cd4 ,be not therefore solicitous for to morrow2 for the morrow will be solicitous for itself4 ,sufficient for the day is the evil thereof4 ,matthew ,chapter #g ,the third part of the sermon on the mount4 #g3a4 ,judge not1 that you may not be judged4 #g3b4 ,for with what judgment you judge1 you shall be judged3 and with what measure you mete1 it shall be measured to you again4 #g3c4 ,and why seest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye2 and seest not the beam that is in thy own eye8 #g3d4 ,or how sayest thou to thy brother3 ,let me cast the mote out of thy eye2 and behold a beam is in thy own eye8 #g3e4 ,thou hypocrite1 cast out first the beam out of thy own eye1 and then shalt thou see to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye4 #g3f4 ,give not that which is holy to dogs2 neither cast ye your pearls before swine1 lest perhaps they trample them under their feet1 and turning upon you1 they tear you4 #g3g4 ,ask1 and it shall be given you3 seek1 and you shall find3 knock1 and it shall be opened to you4 #g3h4 ,for every one that asketh1 receiveth3 and he that seeketh1 findeth3 and to him that knocketh1 it shall be opened4 #g3i4 ,or what man is there among you1 of whom if his son shall ask bread1 will he reach him a stone8 #g3aj4 ,or if he shall ask him a fish1 will he reach him a serpent8 #g3aa4 ,if you then being evil1 know how to give good gifts to your children3 how much more will your ,father who is in heaven1 give good things to them that ask him8 #g3ab4 ,all things therefore whatsoever you would that men should do to you1 do you also to them4 ,for this is the law and the prophets4 #g3ac4 ,enter ye in at the narrow gate3 for wide is the gate1 and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction1 and many there are who go in thereat4 #g3ad4 ,how narrow is the gate1 and strait is the way that leadeth to life3 and few there are that find it6 #g3ae4 ,beware of false prophets1 who come to you in the clothing of sheep1 but inwardly they are ravening wolves4 #g3af4 ,by their fruits you shall know them4 ,do men gather grapes of thorns1 or figs of thistles8 #g3ag4 ,even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit1 and the evil tree bringeth forth evil fruit4 #g3ah4 ,a good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit1 neither can an evil tree bring forth good fruit4 #g3ai4 ,every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit1 shall be cut down1 and shall be cast into the fire4 #g3bj4 ,wherefore by their fruits you shall know them4 #g3ba4 ,not every one that saith to me1 ,lord1 ,lord1 shall enter into the kingdom of heaven3 but he that doth the will of my ,father who is in heaven1 he shall enter into the kingdom of heaven4 #g3bb4 ,many will say to me in that day3 ,lord1 ,lord1 have not we prophesied in thy name1 and cast out devils in thy name1 and done many miracles in thy name8 #g3bc4 ,and then will ,i profess unto them1 ,i never knew you3 depart from me1 you that work iniquity4 #g3bd4 ,every one therefore that heareth these my words1 and doth them1 shall be likened to a wise man that built his house upon a rock1 #g3be4 ,and the rain fell1 and the floods came1 and the winds blew1 and they beat upon that house1 and it fell not1 for it was founded on a rock4 #g3bf4 ,and every one that heareth these my words and doth them not1 shall be like a foolish man that built his house upon the sand1 #g3bg4 ,and the rain fell1 and the floods came1 and the winds blew1 and they beat upon that house1 and it fell1 and great was the fall thereof4 #g3bh4 ,and it came to pass when ,jesus had fully ended these words1 the people were in admiration at his doctrine4 #g3bi4 ,for he was teaching them as one having power1 and not as the scribes and ,pharisees4 ,matthew ,chapter #h ,christ cleanses the leper1 heals the centurion's servant1 ,peter's mother-in-law1 and many others3 he stills the storm at sea1 drives the devils out of two men possessed1 and suffers them to go into the swine4 #h3a4 ,and when he was come down from the mountain1 great multitudes followed him3 #h3b4 ,and behold a leper came and adored him1 saying3 ,lord1 if thou wilt1 thou canst make me clean4 #h3c4 ,and ,jesus stretching forth his hand1 touched him1 saying3 ,i will1 be thou made clean4 ,and forthwith his leprosy was cleansed4 #h3d4 ,and ,jesus saith to him3 ,see thou tell no man3 but go1 shew thyself to the priest1 and offer the gift which ,moses commanded1 for a testimony unto them4 #h3e4 ,and when he had entered into ,capharnaum1 there came to him a centurion1 beseeching him1 #h3f4 ,and saying1 ,lord1 my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy1 and is grievously tormented4 #h3g4 ,and ,jesus saith to him3 ,i will come and heal him4 #h3h4 ,and the centurion1 making answer1 said3 ,lord1 ,i am not worthy that thou shouldst enter under my roof2 but only say the word1 and my servant shall be healed4 #h3i4 ,for ,i also am a man subject to authority1 having under me soldiers2 and ,i say to this1 ,go1 and he goeth1 and to another ,come1 and he cometh1 and to my servant1 ,do this1 and he doeth it4 #h3aj4 ,and ,jesus hearing this1 marvelled2 and said to them that followed him4 ,amen ,i say to you1 ,i have not found so great faith in ,israel4 #h3aa4 ,and ,i say to you that many shall come from the east and the west1 and shall sit down with ,abraham1 and ,isaac and ,jacob in the kingdom of heaven3 #h3ab4 ,but the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into the exterior darkness3 there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth4 #h3ac4 ,and ,jesus said to the centurion3 ,go1 and as thou hast believed1 so be it done to thee4 ,and the servant was healed at the same hour4 #h3ad4 ,and when ,jesus was come into ,peter's house1 he saw his wife's mother lying1 and sick of a fever2 #h3ae4 ,and he touched her hand1 and the fever left her1 and she arose and ministered to them4 #h3af4 ,and when evening was come1 they brought to him many that were possessed with devils3 and he cast out the spirits with his word3 and all that were sick he healed3 #h3ag4 ,that it might be fulfilled1 which was spoken by the prophet ,isaias1 saying3 ,he took our infirmities1 and bore our diseases4 #h3ah4 ,and ,jesus seeing great multitudes about him1 gave orders to pass over the water4 #h3ai4 ,and a certain scribe came and said to him3 ,master1 ,i will follow thee whithersoever thou shalt go4 #h3bj4 ,and ,jesus saith to him3 ,the foxes have holes1 and the birds of the air nests2 but the ,son of man hath not where to lay his head4 #h3ba4 ,and another of his disciples said to him3 ,lord1 suffer me first to go and bury my father4 #h3bb4 ,but ,jesus said to him3 ,follow me1 and let the dead bury their dead4 #h3bc4 ,and when he entered into the boat1 his disciples followed him3 #h3bd4 ,and behold a great tempest arose in the sea1 so that the boat was covered with waves1 but he was asleep4 #h3be4 ,and they came to him1 and awaked him1 saying3 ,lord1 save us1 we perish4 #h3bf4 ,and ,jesus saith to them3 ,why are you fearful1 ,o ye of little faith8 ,then rising up1 he commanded the winds1 and the sea1 and there came a great calm4 #h3bg4 ,but the men wondered1 saying3 ,what manner of man is this1 for the winds and the sea obey him8 #h3bh4 ,and when he was come on the other side of the water1 into the country of the ,gerasens1 there met him two that were possessed with devils1 coming out of the sepulchres1 exceeding fierce1 so that none could pass by that way4 #h3bi4 ,and behold they cried out1 saying3 ,what have we to do with thee1 ,jesus ,son of ,god8 art thou come hither to torment us before the time8 #h3cj4 ,and there was1 not far from them1 a herd of many swine feeding4 #h3ca4 ,and the devils besought him1 saying3 ,if thou cast us out hence1 send us into the herd of swine4 #h3cb4 ,and he said to them3 ,go4 ,but they going out went into the swine1 and behold the whole herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea3 and they perished in the waters4 #h3cc4 ,and they that kept them fled3 and coming into the city1 told every thing1 and concerning them that had been possessed by the devils4 #h3cd4 ,and behold the whole city went out to meet ,jesus1 and when they saw him1 they besought him that he would depart from their coast4 ,matthew ,chapter #i ,christ heals one sick of palsy3 calls ,matthew3 cures the issue of blood3 raises to life the daughter of ,jairus3 gives sight to two blind men3 and heals a dumb man possessed by the devil4 #i3a4 ,and entering into a boat1 he passed over the water and came into his own city4 #i3b4 ,and behold they brought to him one sick of the palsy lying in a bed4 ,and ,jesus1 seeing their faith1 said to the man sick of the palsy3 ,be of good heart1 son1 thy sins are forgiven thee4 #i3c4 ,and behold some of the scribes said within themselves3 ,he blasphemeth4 #i3d4 ,and ,jesus seeing their thoughts1 said3 ,why do you think evil in your hearts8 #i3e4 ,whether is easier1 to say1 ,thy sins are forgiven thee3 or to say1 ,arise1 and walk8 #i3f4 ,but that you may know that the ,son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins1 7then said he to the man sick of the palsy17 ,arise1 take up thy bed1 and go into thy house4 #i3g4 ,and he arose1 and went into his house4 #i3h4 ,and the multitude seeing it1 feared1 and glorified ,god that gave such power to men4 #i3i4 ,and when ,jesus passed on from thence1 he saw a man sitting in the custom house1 named ,matthew2 and he saith to him3 ,follow me4 ,and he arose up and followed him4 #i3aj4 ,and it came to pass as he was sitting at meat in the house1 behold many publicans and sinners came1 and sat down with ,jesus and his disciples4 #i3aa4 ,and the ,pharisees seeing it1 said to his disciples3 ,why doth your master eat with publicans and sinners8 #i3ab4 ,but ,jesus hearing it1 said3 ,they that are in health need not a physician1 but they that are ill4 #i3ac4 ,go then and learn what this meaneth1 ,i will have mercy and not sacrifice4 ,for ,i am not come to call the just1 but sinners4 #i3ad4 ,then came to him the disciples of ,john1 saying3 ,why do we and the ,pharisees1 fast often1 but thy disciples do not fast8 #i3ae4 ,and ,jesus said to them3 ,can the children of the bridegroom mourn1 as long as the bridegroom is with them8 ,but the days will come1 when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them1 and then they shall fast4 ,can the children of the bridegroom444 ,this1 by a ,hebraism1 signifies the friends or companions of the bridegroom4 #i3af4 ,and nobody putteth a piece of raw cloth unto an old garment4 ,for it taketh away the fulness thereof from the garment1 and there is made a greater rent4 #i3ag4 ,neither do they put new wine into old bottles4 ,otherwise the bottles break1 and the wine runneth out1 and the bottles perish4 ,but new wine they put into new bottles3 and both are preserved4 #i3ah4 ,as he was speaking these things unto them1 behold a certain ruler came up1 and adored him1 saying3 ,lord1 my daughter is even now dead2 but come1 lay thy hand upon her1 and she shall live4 #i3ai4 ,and ,jesus rising up followed him1 with his disciples4 #i3bj4 ,and behold a woman who was troubled with an issue of blood twelve years1 came behind him1 and touched the hem of his garment4 #i3ba4 ,for she said within herself3 ,if ,i shall touch only his garment1 ,i shall be healed4 #i3bb4 ,but ,jesus turning and seeing her1 said3 ,be of good heart1 daughter1 thy faith hath made thee whole4 ,and the woman was made whole from that hour4 #i3bc4 ,and when ,jesus was come into the house of the ruler1 and saw the minstrels and the multitude making a rout1 #i3bd4 ,he said3 ,give place1 for the girl is not dead1 but sleepeth4 ,and they laughed him to scorn4 #i3be4 ,and when the multitude was put forth1 he went in1 and took her by the hand4 ,and the maid arose4 #i3bf4 ,and the fame hereof went abroad into all that country4 #i3bg4 ,and as ,jesus passed from thence1 there followed him two blind men crying out and saying1 ,have mercy on us1 ,o ,son of ,david4 #i3bh4 ,and when he was come to the house1 the blind men came to him4 ,and ,jesus saith to them1 ,do you believe1 that ,i can do this unto you8 ,they say to him1 ,yea1 ,lord4 #i3bi4 ,then he touched their eyes1 saying1 ,according to your faith1 be it done unto you4 #i3cj4 ,and their eyes were opened1 and ,jesus strictly charged them1 saying1 ,see that no man know this4 #i3ca4 ,but they going out1 spread his fame abroad in all that country4 #i3cb4 ,and when they were gone out1 behold they brought him a dumb man1 possessed with a devil4 #i3cc4 ,and after the devil was cast out1 the dumb man spoke1 and the multitudes wondered1 saying1 ,never was the like seen in ,israel4 #i3cd4 ,but the ,pharisees said1 ,by the prince of devils he casteth out devils4 #i3ce4 ,and ,jesus went about all the cities and towns1 teaching in their synagogues1 and preaching the gospel of the kingdom1 and healing every disease1 and every infirmity4 #i3cf4 ,and seeing the multitudes1 he had compassion on them3 because they were distressed1 and lying like sheep that have no shepherd4 #i3cg4 ,then he saith to his disciples1 ,the harvest indeed is great1 but the labourers are few4 #i3ch4 ,pray ye therefore the ,lord of the harvest1 that he send forth labourers into his harvest4 ,matthew ,chapter #aj ,christ sends out his twelve apostles1 with the power of miracles4 ,the lessons he gives them4 #aj3a4 ,and having called his twelve disciples together1 he gave them power over unclean spirits1 to cast them out1 and to heal all manner of diseases1 and all manner of infirmities4 #aj3b4 ,and the names of the twelve ,apostles are these3 ,the first1 ,simon who is called ,peter1 and ,andrew his brother1 #aj3c4 ,james the son of ,zebedee1 and ,john his brother1 ,philip and ,bartholomew1 ,thomas and ,matthew the publican1 and ,james the son of ,alpheus1 and ,thaddeus1 #aj3d4 ,simon the ,cananean1 and ,judas ,iscariot1 who also betrayed him4 #aj3e4 ,these twelve ,jesus sent3 commanding them1 saying3 ,go ye not into the way of the ,gentiles1 and into the city of the ,samaritans enter ye not4 #aj3f4 ,but go ye rather to the lost sheep of the house of ,israel4 #aj3g4 ,and going1 preach1 saying3 ,the kingdom of heaven is at hand4 #aj3h4 ,heal the sick1 raise the dead1 cleanse the lepers1 cast out devils3 freely have you received1 freely give4 #aj3i4 ,do not possess gold1 nor silver1 nor money in your purses3 #aj3aj4 ,nor scrip for your journey1 nor two coats1 nor shoes1 nor a staff2 for the workman is worthy of his meat4 #aj3aa4 ,and into whatsoever city or town you shall enter1 inquire who in it is worthy1 and there abide till you go thence4 #aj3ab4 ,and when you come into the house1 salute it1 saying3 ,peace be to this house4 #aj3ac4 ,and if that house be worthy1 your peace shall come upon it2 but if it be not worthy1 your peace shall return to you4 #aj3ad4 ,and whosoever shall not receive you1 nor hear your words3 going forth out of that house or city shake off the dust from your feet4 #aj3ae4 ,amen ,i say to you1 it shall be more tolerable for the land of ,sodom and ,gomorrha in the day of judgment1 than for that city4 #aj3af4 ,behold ,i send you as sheep in the midst of wolves4 ,be ye therefore wise as serpents and simple as doves4 ,simple444 ,that is1 harmless1 plain1 sincere1 and without guile4 #aj3ag4 ,but beware of men4 ,for they will deliver you up in councils1 and they will scourge you in their synagogues4 #aj3ah4 ,and you shall be brought before governors1 and before kings for my sake1 for a testimony to them and to the ,gentiles3 #aj3ai4 ,but when they shall deliver you up1 take no thought how or what to speak3 for it shall be given you in that hour what to speak3 #aj3bj4 ,for it is not you that speak1 but the spirit of your ,father that speaketh in you4 #aj3ba4 ,the brother also shall deliver up the brother to death1 and the father the son2 and the children shall rise up against their parents1 and shall put them to death4 #aj3bb4 ,and you shall be hated by all men for my name's sake3 but he that shall persevere unto the end1 he shall be saved4 #aj3bc4 ,and when they shall persecute you in this city1 flee into another4 ,amen ,i say to you1 you shall not finish all the cities of ,israel1 till the ,son of man come4 #aj3bd4 ,the disciple is not above the master1 nor the servant above his lord4 #aj3be4 ,it is enough for the disciple that he be as his master1 and the servant as his lord4 ,if they have called the good man of the house ,beelzebub1 how much more them of his household8 #aj3bf4 ,therefore fear them not4 ,for nothing is covered that shall not be revealed3 nor hid1 that shall not be known4 #aj3bg4 ,that which ,i tell you in the dark1 speak ye in the light3 and that which you hear in the ear1 preach ye upon the housetops4 #aj3bh4 ,and fear ye not them that kill the body1 and are not able to kill the soul3 but rather fear him that can destroy both soul and body in hell4 #aj3bi4 ,are not two sparrows sold for a farthing8 and not one of them shall fall on the ground without your ,father4 #aj3cj4 ,but the very hairs of your head are all numbered4 #aj3ca4 ,fear not therefore3 better are you than many sparrows4 #aj3cb4 ,every one therefore that shall confess me before men1 ,i will also confess him before my ,father who is in heaven4 #aj3cc4 ,but he that shall deny me before men1 ,i will also deny him before my ,father who is in heaven4 #aj3cd4 ,do not think that ,i came to send peace upon earth3 ,i came not to send peace1 but the sword4 #aj3ce4 ,for ,i came to set a man at variance against his father1 and the daughter against her mother1 and the daughter in law against her mother in law4 ,i came to set a man at variance1 etc444 ,not that this was the end or design of the coming of our ,saviour2 but that his coming and his doctrine would have this effect1 by reason of the obstinate resistance that many would make1 and of their persecuting all such as should adhere to him4 #aj3cf4 ,and a man's enemies shall be they of his own household4 #aj3cg4 ,he that loveth father or mother more than me1 is not worthy of me2 and he that loveth son or daughter more than me1 is not worthy of me4 #aj3ch4 ,and he that taketh not up his cross1 and followeth me1 is not worthy of me4 #aj3ci4 ,he that findeth his life1 shall lose it3 and he that shall lose his life for me1 shall find it4 #aj3dj4 ,he that receiveth you1 receiveth me3 and he that receiveth me1 receiveth him that sent me4 #aj3da4 ,he that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet1 shall receive the reward of a prophet3 and he that receiveth a just man in the name of a just man1 shall receive the reward of a just man4 #aj3db4 ,and whosoever shall give to drink to one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple1 amen ,i say to you he shall not lose his reward4 ,matthew ,chapter #aa ,john sends his disciples to ,christ1 who upbraids the ,jews for their incredulity1 and calls to him such as are sensible of their burdens4 #aa3a4 ,and it came to pass1 when ,jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples1 he passed from thence1 to teach and to preach in their cities4 #aa3b4 ,now when ,john had heard in prison the works of ,christ3 sending two of his disciples he said to him3 #aa3c4 ,art thou he that art to come1 or look we for another8 #aa3d4 ,and ,jesus making answer said to them3 ,go and relate to ,john what you have heard and seen4 #aa3e4 ,the blind see1 the lame walk1 the lepers are cleansed1 the deaf hear1 the dead rise again1 the poor have the gospel preached to them4 #aa3f4 ,and blessed is he that shall not be scandalized in me4 ,scandalized in me444 ,that is1 who shall not take occasion of scandal or offence from my humility1 and the disgraceful death of the cross which ,i shall endure4 #aa3g4 ,and when they went their way1 ,jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning ,john3 ,what went you out into the desert to see8 a reed shaken with the wind8 #aa3h4 ,but what went you out to see8 a man clothed in soft garments8 ,behold they that are clothed in soft garments1 are in the houses of kings4 #aa3i4 ,but what went you out to see8 ,a prophet8 ,yea ,i tell you1 and more than a prophet4 #aa3aj4 ,for this is he of whom it is written3 ,behold ,i send my angel before my face1 who shall prepare thy way before thee4 #aa3aa4 ,amen ,i say to you1 there hath not risen among them that are born of women a greater than ,john the ,baptist3 yet he that is the lesser in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he4 #aa3ab4 ,and from the days of ,john the ,baptist until now1 the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence1 and the violent bear it away4 ,suffereth violence1 etc444 ,it is not to be obtained but by main force1 by using violence upon ourselves1 by mortification and penance1 and resisting our perverse inclinations4 #aa3ac4 ,for all the prophets and the law prophesied until ,john3 #aa3ad4 ,and if you will receive it1 he is ,elias that is to come4 ,he is ,elias1 etc444 ,not in person1 but in spirit4 ,st4 ,luke #a4 #ag4 #aa3ae4 ,he that hath ears to hear1 let him hear4 #aa3af4 ,but whereunto shall ,i esteem this generation to be like8 ,it is like to children sitting in the market place4 #aa3ag4 ,who crying to their companions say3 ,we have piped to you1 and you have not danced3 we have lamented1 and you have not mourned4 #aa3ah4 ,for ,john came neither eating nor drinking2 and they say3 ,he hath a devil4 #aa3ai4 ,the ,son of man came eating and drinking1 and they say3 ,behold a man that is a glutton and a wine drinker1 a friend of publicans and sinners4 ,and wisdom is justified by her children4 #aa3bj4 ,then began he to upbraid the cities wherein were done the most of his miracles1 for that they had not done penance4 #aa3ba4 ,woe thee1 ,corozain1 woe to thee1 ,bethsaida3 for if in ,tyre and ,sidon had been wrought the miracles that have been wrought in you1 they had long ago done penance in sackcloth and ashes4 #aa3bb4 ,but ,i say unto you1 it shall be more tolerable for ,tyre and ,sidon in the day of judgment1 than for you4 #aa3bc4 ,and thou ,capharnaum1 shalt thou be exalted up to heaven8 thou shalt go down even unto hell4 ,for if in ,sodom had been wrought the miracles that have been wrought in thee1 perhaps it had remained unto this day4 #aa3bd4 ,but ,i say unto you1 that it shall be more tolerable for the land of ,sodom in the day of judgment than for thee4 #aa3be4 ,at that time ,jesus answered and said3 ,i confess to thee1 ,o ,father1 ,lord of ,heaven and earth1 because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent1 and hast revealed them to little ones4 #aa3bf4 ,yea1 ,father3 for so hath it seemed good in thy sight4 #aa3bg4 ,all things are delivered to me by my ,father4 ,and no one knoweth the ,son but the ,father3 neither doth any one know the ,father1 but the ,son1 and he to whom it shall please the ,son to reveal him4 #aa3bh4 ,come to me all you that labor and are burdened1 and ,i will refresh you4 #aa3bi4 ,take up my yoke upon you1 and learn of me1 because ,i am meek1 and humble of heart3 ,and you shall find rest to your souls4 #aa3cj4 ,for my yoke is sweet and my burden light4 ,matthew ,chapter #ab ,christ reproves the blindness of the ,pharisees1 and confutes their attributing his miracles to ,satan4 #ab3a4 ,at that time ,jesus went through the corn on the sabbath3 and his disciples being hungry1 began to pluck the ears1 and to eat4 #ab3b4 ,and the ,pharisees seeing them1 said to him3 ,behold thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days4 #ab3c4 ,but he said to them3 ,have you not read what ,david did when he was hungry1 and they that were with him3 #ab3d4 ,how he entered into the house of ,god1 and did eat the loaves of proposition1 which it was not lawful for him to eat1 nor for them that were with him1 but for the priests only8 ,the loaves of proposition444 ,so were called the twelve loaves which were placed before the sanctuary in the temple of ,god4 #ab3e4 ,or have ye not read in the law1 that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple break the sabbath1 and are without blame8 #ab3f4 ,but ,i tell you that there is here a greater than the temple4 #ab3g4 ,and if you knew what this meaneth3 ,i will have mercy1 and not sacrifice3 you would never have condemned the innocent4 #ab3h4 ,for the ,son of man is ,lord even of the sabbath4 #ab3i4 ,and when he had passed from thence1 he came into their synagogues4 #ab3aj4 ,and behold there was a man who had a withered hand1 and they asked him1 saying3 ,is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days8 that they might accuse him4 #ab3aa4 ,but he said to them3 ,what man shall there be among you1 that hath one sheep3 and if the same fall into a pit on the sabbath day1 will he not take hold on it and lift it up8 #ab3ab4 ,how much better is a man than a sheep8 ,therefore it is lawful to do a good deed on the sabbath days4 #ab3ac4 ,then he saith to the man3 ,stretch forth thy hand2 and he stretched it forth1 and it was restored to health even as the other4 #ab3ad4 ,and the ,pharisees going out made a consultation against him1 how they might destroy him4 #ab3ae4 ,but ,jesus knowing it1 retired from thence3 and many followed him1 and he healed them all4 #ab3af4 ,and he charged them that they should not make him known4 #ab3ag4 ,that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by ,isaias the prophet1 saying3 #ab3ah4 ,behold my servant whom ,i have chosen1 my beloved in whom my soul hath been well pleased4 ,i will put my spirit upon him1 and he shall shew judgment to the ,gentiles4 #ab3ai4 ,he shall not contend1 nor cry out1 neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets4 #ab3bj4 ,the bruised reed he shall not break3 and smoking flax he shall not extinguish3 till he send forth judgment unto victory4 #ab3ba4 ,and in his name the ,gentiles shall hope4 #ab3bb4 ,then was offered to him one possessed with a devil1 blind and dumb3 and he healed him1 so that he spoke and saw4 #ab3bc4 ,and all the multitudes were amazed1 and said3 ,is not this the son of ,david8 #ab3bd4 ,but the ,pharisees hearing it1 said3 ,this man casteth not out devils but by ,beelzebub the prince of the devils4 #ab3be4 ,and ,jesus knowing their thoughts1 said to them3 ,every kingdom divided against itself shall be made desolate3 and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand4 #ab3bf4 ,and if ,satan cast out ,satan1 he is divided against himself3 how then shall his kingdom stand8 #ab3bg4 ,and if ,i by ,beelzebub cast out devils1 by whom do your children cast them out8 ,therefore they shall be your judges4 #ab3bh4 ,but if ,i by the ,spirit of ,god cast out devils1 then is the kingdom of ,god come upon you4 #ab3bi4 ,or how can any one enter into the house of the strong1 and rifle his goods1 unless he first bind the strong8 and then he will rifle his house4 #ab3cj4 ,he that is not with me1 is against me3 and he that gathereth not with me1 scattereth4 #ab3ca4 ,therefore ,i say to you3 ,every sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven men1 but the blasphemy of the ,spirit shall not be forgiven4 ,the blasphemy of the ,spirit444 ,the sin here spoken of is that blasphemy1 by which the ,pharisees attributed the miracles of ,christ1 wrought by the ,spirit of ,god1 to ,beelzebub the prince of devils4 ,now this kind of sin is usually accompanied with so much obstinacy1 and such wilful opposing the ,spirit of ,god1 and the known truth1 that men who are guilty of it1 are seldom or never converted3 and therefore are never forgiven1 because they will not repent4 ,otherwise there is no sin1 which ,god cannot or will not forgive to such as sincerely repent1 and have recourse to the keys of the church4 #ab3cb4 ,and whosoever shall speak a word against the ,son of man1 it shall be forgiven him3 but he that shall speak against the ,holy ,ghost1 it shall not be forgiven him neither in this world1 nor in the world to come4 ,nor in the world to come444 ,from these words ,st4 ,augustine 7,de ,civ4 ,dei1 lib4 #ba1 c4 #ac7 and ,st4 ,gregory 7,dialog41 #d1 c4 #ci7 gather1 that some sins may be remitted in the world to come2 and1 consequently1 that there is a purgatory or a middle place4 #ab3cc4 ,either make the tree good and its fruit good3 or make the tree evil1 and its fruit evil4 ,for by the fruit the tree is known4 #ab3cd4 ,o generation of vipers1 how can you speak good things1 whereas you are evil8 for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh4 #ab3ce4 ,a good man out of a good treasure bringeth forth good things3 and an evil man out of an evil treasure bringeth forth evil things4 #ab3cf4 ,but ,i say unto you1 that every idle word that men shall speak1 they shall render an account for it in the day of judgment4 ,every idle word444 ,this shews there must be a place of temporal punishment hereafter where these slighter faults shall be punished4 #ab3cg4 ,for by thy words thou shalt be justified1 and by thy words thou shalt be condemned4 #ab3ch4 ,then some of the scribes and ,pharisees answered him1 saying3 ,master1 we would see a sign from thee4 ,a sign444 ,that is1 a miracle from heaven4 ,st4 ,luke #aa4 #af4 #ab3ci4 ,who answering said to them3 ,an evil and adulterous generation seeketh a sign3 and a sign shall not be given it1 but the sign of ,jonas the prophet4 #ab3dj4 ,for as ,jonas was in the whale's belly three days and three nights3 so shall the ,son of man be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights4 ,three days1 etc444 ,not complete days and nights2 but part of three days1 and three nights taken according to the way that the ,hebrews counted their days and nights1 viz41 from evening to evening4 #ab3da4 ,the men of ,ninive shall rise in judgment with this generation1 and shall condemn it3 because they did penance at the preaching of ,jonas4 ,and behold a greater than ,jonas here4 #ab3db4 ,the queen of the south shall rise in judgment with this generation1 and shall condemn it3 because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of ,solomon1 and behold a greater than ,solomon here4 #ab3dc4 ,and when an unclean spirit is gone out of a man he walketh through dry places seeking rest1 and findeth none4 #ab3dd4 ,then he saith3 ,i will return into my house from whence ,i came out4 ,and coming he findeth it empty1 swept1 and garnished4 #ab3de4 ,then he goeth1 and taketh with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself1 and they enter in and dwell there3 and the last state of that man is made worse than the first4 ,so shall it be also to this wicked generation4 #ab3df4 ,as he was yet speaking to the multitudes1 behold his mother and his brethren stood without1 seeking to speak to him4 #ab3dg4 ,and one said unto him3 ,behold thy mother and thy brethren stand without1 seeking thee4 #ab3dh4 ,but he answering him that told him1 said3 ,who is my mother1 and who are my brethren8 ,who is my mother8444 ,this was not spoken by way of slighting his mother1 but to shew that we are never to suffer ourselves to be taken from the service of ,god1 by any inordinate affection to our earthly parents3 and that which our ,lord chiefly regarded in his mother1 was her doing the will of his ,father in heaven4 ,it may also further allude to the reprobation of the ,jews1 his carnal kindred1 and the election of the ,gentiles4 #ab3di4 ,and stretching forth his hand towards his disciples1 he said3 ,behold my mother and my brethren4 #ab3ej4 ,for whosoever shall do the will of my ,father1 that is in heaven1 he is my brother1 and sister1 and mother4 ,matthew ,chapter #ac ,the parables of the sower and the cockle3 of the mustardseed1 etc4 #ac3a4 ,the same day ,jesus going out of the house1 sat by the sea side4 #ac3b4 ,and great multitudes were gathered together unto him1 so that he went up into a boat and sat3 and all the multitude stood on the shore4 #ac3c4 ,and he spoke to them many things in parables1 saying3 ,behold the sower went forth to sow4 #ac3d4 ,and whilst he soweth some fell by the way side1 and the birds of the air came and ate them up4 #ac3e4 ,and other some fell upon stony ground1 where they had not much earth3 and they sprung up immediately1 because they had no deepness of earth4 #ac3f4 ,and when the sun was up they were scorched3 and because they had not root1 they withered away4 #ac3g4 ,and others fell among thorns3 and the thorns grew up and choked them4 #ac3h4 ,and others fell upon good ground3 and they brought forth fruit1 some an hundred fold1 some sixty fold1 and some thirty fold4 #ac3i4 ,he that hath ears to hear1 let him hear4 #ac3aj4 ,and his disciples came and said to him3 ,why speakest thou to them in parables8 #ac3aa4 ,who answered and said to them3 ,because to you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven3 but to them it is not given4 #ac3ab4 ,for he that hath1 to him shall be given1 and he shall abound3 but he that hath not1 from him shall be taken away that also which he hath4 #ac3ac4 ,therefore do ,i speak to them in parables3 because seeing they see not1 and hearing they hear not1 neither do they understand4 #ac3ad4 ,and the prophecy of ,isaias is fulfilled in them1 who saith3 ,by hearing you shall hear1 and shall not understand3 and seeing you shall see1 and shall not perceive4 #ac3ae4 ,for the heart of this people is grown gross1 and with their ears they have been dull of hearing1 and their eyes they have shut3 lest at any time they should see with their eyes1 and hear with their ears1 and understand with their heart1 and be converted1 and ,i should heal them4 #ac3af4 ,but blessed are your eyes1 because they see1 and your ears1 because they hear4 #ac3ag4 ,for1 amen1 ,i say to you1 many prophets and just men have desired to see the things that you see1 and have not seen them3 and to hear the things that you hear and have not heard them4 #ac3ah4 ,hear you therefore the parable of the sower4 #ac3ai4 ,when any one heareth the word of the kingdom1 and understandeth it not1 there cometh the wicked one1 and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart3 this is he that received the seed by the way side4 #ac3bj4 ,and he that received the seed upon stony ground1 is he that heareth the word1 and immediately receiveth it with joy4 #ac3ba4 ,yet hath he not root in himself1 but is only for a time3 and when there ariseth tribulation and persecution because of the word1 he is presently scandalized4 #ac3bb4 ,and he that received the seed among thorns1 is he that heareth the word1 and the care of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choketh up the word1 and he becometh fruitless4 #ac3bc4 ,but he that received the seed upon good ground1 is he that heareth the word1 and understandeth1 and beareth fruit1 and yieldeth the one an hundredfold1 and another sixty1 and another thirty4 #ac3bd4 ,another parable he proposed to them1 saying3 ,the kingdom of heaven is likened to a man that sowed good seed in his field4 #ac3be4 ,but while men were asleep1 his enemy came and oversowed cockle among the wheat and went his way4 #ac3bf4 ,and when the blade was sprung up1 and had brought forth fruit1 then appeared also the cockle4 #ac3bg4 ,and the servants of the good man of the house coming said to him4 ,sir1 didst thou not sow good seed in thy field8 ,whence then hath it cockle8 #ac3bh4 ,and he said to them3 ,an enemy hath done this4 ,and the servants said to him3 ,wilt thou that we go and gather it up8 #ac3bi4 ,and he said3 ,no1 lest perhaps gathering up the cockle1 you root up the wheat also together with it4 #ac3cj4 ,suffer both to grow until the harvest1 and in the time of the harvest ,i will say to the reapers3 ,gather up first the cockle1 and bind it into bundles to burn1 but the wheat gather ye into my barn4 #ac3ca4 ,another parable he proposed unto them1 saying3 ,the kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed1 which a man took and sowed in his field4 #ac3cb4 ,which is the least indeed of all seeds2 but when it is grown up1 it is greater than all herbs1 and becometh a tree1 so that the birds of the air come1 and dwell in the branches thereof4 #ac3cc4 ,another parable he spoke to them3 ,the kingdom of heaven is like to leaven1 which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal1 until the whole was leavened4 #ac3cd4 ,all these things ,jesus spoke in parables to the multitudes3 and without parables he did not speak to them4 #ac3ce4 ,that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet1 saying3 ,i will open my mouth in parables1 ,i will utter things hidden from the foundation of the world4 #ac3cf4 ,then having sent away the multitudes1 he came into the house1 and his disciples came to him1 saying3 ,expound to us the parable of the cockle of the field4 #ac3cg4 ,who made answer and said to them3 ,he that soweth the good seed is the ,son of man4 #ac3ch4 ,and the field is the world4 ,and the good seed are the children of the kingdom4 ,and the cockle are the children of the wicked one4 #ac3ci4 ,and the enemy that sowed them1 is the devil4 ,but the harvest is the end of the world4 ,and the reapers are the angels4 #ac3dj4 ,even as cockle therefore is gathered up1 and burnt with fire3 so shall it be at the end of the world4 #ac3da4 ,the ,son of man shall send his angels1 and they shall gather out of his kingdom all scandals1 and them that work iniquity4 #ac3db4 ,and shall cast them into the furnace of fire3 there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth4 #ac3dc4 ,then shall the just shine as the sun1 in the kingdom of their ,father4 ,he that hath ears to hear1 let him hear4 #ac3dd4 ,the kingdom of heaven is like unto a treasure hidden in a field4 ,which a man having found1 hid it1 and for joy thereof goeth1 and selleth all that he hath1 and buyeth that field4 #ac3de4 ,again the kingdom of heaven is like to a merchant seeking good pearls4 #ac3df4 ,who when he had found one pearl of great price1 went his way1 and sold all that he had1 and bought it4 #ac3dg4 ,again the kingdom of heaven is like to a net cast into the sea1 and gathering together of all kinds of fishes4 #ac3dh4 ,which1 when it was filled1 they drew out1 and sitting by the shore1 they chose out the good into vessels1 but the bad they cast forth4 #ac3di4 ,so shall it be at the end of the world4 ,the angels shall go out1 and shall separate the wicked from among the just4 #ac3ej4 ,and shall cast them into the furnace of fire3 there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth4 #ac3ea4 ,have ye understood all these things8 ,they say to him3 ,yes4 #ac3eb4 ,he said unto them3 ,therefore every scribe instructed in the kingdom of heaven1 is like to a man that is a householder1 who bringeth forth out of his treasure new things and old4 #ac3ec4 ,and it came to pass3 when ,jesus had finished these parables1 he passed from thence4 #ac3ed4 ,and coming into his own country1 he taught them in their synagogues1 so that they wondered and said3 ,how came this man by this wisdom and miracles8 #ac3ee4 ,is not this the carpenter's son8 ,is not his mother called ,mary1 and his brethren ,james1 and ,joseph1 and ,simon1 and ,jude3 ,his brethren444 ,these were the children of ,mary the wife of ,cleophas1 sister to our ,blessed ,lady1 7,st4 ,matt4 #bg4 #ef2 ,st4 ,john #ai4 #be17 and therefore1 according to the usual style of the ,scripture1 they were called brethren1 that is1 near relations to our ,saviour4 #ac3ef4 ,and his sisters1 are they not all with us8 ,whence therefore hath he all these things8 #ac3eg4 ,and they were scandalized in his regard4 ,but ,jesus said to them3 ,a prophet is not without honour1 save in his own country1 and in his own house4 #ac3eh4 ,and he wrought not many miracles there1 because of their unbelief4 ,matthew ,chapter #ad ,herod puts ,john to death4 ,christ feeds five thousand in the desert4 ,he walks upon the sea1 and heals all the diseased with the touch of his garment4 #ad3a4 ,at that time ,herod the ,tetrarch heard the fame of ,jesus4 ,tetrarch444 ,this word1 derived from the ,greek1 signifies one that rules over the fourth part of a kingdom3 as ,herod then ruled over ,galilee1 which was but the fourth part of the kingdom of his father4 #ad3b4 ,and he said to his servants3 ,this is ,john the ,baptist3 he is risen from the dead1 and therefore mighty works shew forth themselves in him4 #ad3c4 ,for ,herod had apprehended ,john and bound him1 and put him into prison1 because of ,herodias1 his brother's wife4 #ad3d4 ,for ,john said to him3 ,it is not lawful for thee to have her4 #ad3e4 ,and having a mind to put him to death1 he feared the people3 because they esteemed him as a prophet4 #ad3f4 ,but on ,herod's birthday1 the daughter of ,herodias danced before them3 and pleased ,herod4 #ad3g4 ,whereupon he promised with an oath1 to give her whatsoever she would ask of him4 #ad3h4 ,but she being instructed before by her mother1 said3 ,give me here in a dish the head of ,john the ,baptist4 #ad3i4 ,and the king was struck sad3 yet because of his oath1 and for them that sat with him at table1 he commanded it to be given4 #ad3aj4 ,and he sent1 and beheaded ,john in the prison4 #ad3aa4 ,and his head was brought in a dish3 and it was given to the damsel1 and she brought it to her mother4 #ad3ab4 ,and his disciples came and took the body1 and buried it1 and came and told ,jesus4 #ad3ac4 ,which when ,jesus had heard1 he retired from thence by a boat1 into a desert place apart1 and the multitudes having heard of it1 followed him on foot out of the cities4 #ad3ad4 ,and he coming forth saw a great multitude1 and had compassion on them1 and healed their sick4 #ad3ae4 ,and when it was evening1 his disciples came to him1 saying3 ,this is a desert place1 and the hour is now passed3 send away the multitudes1 that going into the towns1 they may buy themselves victuals4 #ad3af4 ,but ,jesus said to them1 ,they have no need to go3 give you them to eat4 #ad3ag4 ,they answered him3 ,we have not here1 but five loaves1 and two fishes4 #ad3ah4 ,who said to them3 ,bring them hither to me4 #ad3ai4 ,and when he had commanded the multitude to sit down upon the grass1 he took the five loaves and the two fishes1 and looking up to heaven1 he blessed1 and brake1 and gave the loaves to his disciples1 and the disciples to the multitudes4 #ad3bj4 ,and they did all eat1 and were filled4 ,and they took up what remained1 twelve full baskets of fragments4 #ad3ba4 ,and the number of them that did eat1 was five thousand men1 besides women and children4 #ad3bb4 ,and forthwith ,jesus obliged his disciples to go up into the boat1 and to go before him over the water1 till he dismissed the people4 #ad3bc4 ,and having dismissed the multitude1 he went into a mountain alone to pray4 ,and when it was evening1 he was there alone4 #ad3bd4 ,but the boat in the midst of the sea was tossed with the waves3 for the wind was contrary4 #ad3be4 ,and in the fourth watch of the night1 he came to them walking upon the sea4 #ad3bf4 ,and they seeing him walking upon the sea1 were troubled1 saying3 ,it is an apparition4 ,and they cried out for fear4 #ad3bg4 ,and immediately ,jesus spoke to them1 saying3 ,be of good heart3 it is ,i1 fear ye not4 #ad3bh4 ,and ,peter making answer1 said3 ,lord1 if it be thou1 bid me come to thee upon the waters4 #ad3bi4 ,and he said3 ,come4 ,and ,peter going down out of the boat walked upon the water to come to ,jesus4 #ad3cj4 ,but seeing the wind strong1 he was afraid3 and when he began to sink1 he cried out1 saying3 ,lord1 save me4 #ad3ca4 ,and immediately ,jesus stretching forth his hand took hold of him1 and said to him3 ,o thou of little faith1 why didst thou doubt8 #ad3cb4 ,and when they were come up into the boat1 the wind ceased4 #ad3cc4 ,and they that were in the boat came and adored him1 saying3 ,indeed thou art the ,son of ,god4 #ad3cd4 ,and having passed the water1 they came into the country of ,genesar4 #ad3ce4 ,and when the men of that place had knowledge of him1 they sent into all that country1 and brought to him all that were diseased4 #ad3cf4 ,and they besought him that they might touch but the hem of his garment4 ,and as many as touched1 were made whole4 ,matthew ,chapter #ae ,christ reproves the ,scribes4 ,he cures the daughter of the woman of ,canaan3 and many others3 and feeds four thousand with seven loaves4 #ae3a4 ,then came to him from ,jerusalem scribes and ,pharisees1 saying3 #ae3b4 ,why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the ancients8 ,for they wash not their hands when they eat bread4 #ae3c4 ,but he answering1 said to them3 ,why do you also transgress the commandment of ,god for your tradition8 ,for ,god said3 #ae3d4 ,honour thy father and mother3 ,and3 ,he that shall curse father or mother1 let him die the death4 #ae3e4 ,but you say3 ,whosoever shall say to father or mother1 ,the gift whatsoever proceedeth from me1 shall profit thee4 ,the gift1 etc444 ,that is1 the offering that ,i shall make to ,god1 shall be instead of that which should be expended for thy profit4 ,this tradition of the ,pharisees was calculated to enrich themselves2 by exempting children from giving any further assistance to their parents1 if they once offered to the temple and the priests1 that which should have been the support of their parents4 ,but this was a violation of the law of ,god1 and of nature1 which our ,saviour here condemns4 #ae3f4 ,and he shall not honour his father or his mother3 and you have made void the commandment of ,god for your tradition4 #ae3g4 ,hypocrites1 well hath ,isaias prophesied of you1 saying3 #ae3h4 ,this people honoureth me with their lips3 but their heart is far from me4 #ae3i4 ,and in vain do they worship me1 teaching doctrines and commandments of men4 ,commandments of men444 ,the doctrines and commandments here reprehended are such as are either contrary to the law of ,god1 7as that of neglecting parents1 under pretence of giving to ,god17 or at least are frivolous1 unprofitable1 and no ways conducing to true piety1 as that of often washing hands1 etc41 without regard to the purity of the heart4 ,but as to the rules and ordinances of the holy church1 touching fasts1 festivals1 etc41 these are no ways repugnant to1 but highly agreeable to ,god's holy word1 and all ,christian piety3 neither are they to be counted among the doctrines and commandments of men2 because they proceed not from mere human authority2 but from that which ,christ has established in his church2 whose pastors he has commanded us to hear and obey1 even as himself4 ,st4 ,luke #aj4 #af2 ,st4 ,matt4 #ah4 #ag4 #ae3aj4 ,and having called together the multitudes unto him1 he said to them3 ,hear ye and understand4 #ae3aa4 ,not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man3 but what cometh out of the mouth1 this defileth a man4 ,not that which goeth into1 etc444 ,no uncleanness in meat1 nor any dirt contracted by eating it with unwashed hands1 can defile the soul3 but sin alone2 or a disobedience of the heart to the ordinance and will of ,god4 ,and thus when ,adam took the forbidden fruit1 it was not the apple1 which entered into the mouth1 but the disobedience to the law of ,god which defiled him4 ,the same is to be said if a ,jew1 in the time of the old law1 had eaten swine's flesh2 or a ,christian convert1 in the days of the apostles1 contrary to their ordinance1 had eaten blood2 or if any of the faithful at present should transgress the ordinance of ,god's church1 by breaking the fasts3 for in all these cases the soul would be defiled2 not indeed by that which goeth into the mouth2 but by the disobedience of the heart1 in wilfully transgressing the ordinance of ,god1 or of those who have their authority from him4 #ae3ab4 ,then came his disciples1 and said to him3 ,dost thou know that the ,pharisees1 when they heard this word1 were scandalized8 #ae3ac4 ,but he answering1 said3 ,every plant which my heavenly ,father hath not planted1 shall be rooted up4 #ae3ad4 ,let them alone3 they are blind1 and leaders of the blind4 ,and if the blind lead the blind1 both fall into the pit4 #ae3ae4 ,and ,peter answering1 said to him3 ,expound to us this parable4 #ae3af4 ,but he said3 ,are you also yet without understanding8 #ae3ag4 ,do you not understand1 that whatsoever entereth into the mouth1 goeth into the belly1 and is cast out into the privy8 #ae3ah4 ,but the things which proceed out of the mouth1 come forth from the heart1 and those things defile a man4 #ae3ai4 ,for from the heart come forth evil thoughts1 murders1 adulteries1 fornications1 thefts1 false testimonies1 blasphemies4 #ae3bj4 ,these are the things that defile a man4 ,but to eat with unwashed hands doth not defile a man4 #ae3ba4 ,and ,jesus went from thence1 and retired into the coast of ,tyre and ,sidon4 #ae3bb4 ,and behold a woman of ,canaan who came out of those coasts1 crying out1 said to him3 ,have mercy on me1 ,o ,lord1 thou son of ,david3 my daughter is grievously troubled by a devil4 #ae3bc4 ,who answered her not a word4 ,and his disciples came and besought him1 saying3 ,send her away1 for she crieth after us3 #ae3bd4 ,and he answering1 said3 ,i was not sent but to the sheep1 that are lost of the house of ,israel4 #ae3be4 ,but she came and adored him1 saying3 ,lord1 help me4 #ae3bf4 ,who answering1 said3 ,it is not good to take the bread of the children1 and to cast it to the dogs4 #ae3bg4 ,but she said3 ,yea1 ,lord2 for the whelps also eat of the crumbs that fall from the table of their masters4 #ae3bh4 ,then ,jesus answering1 said to her3 ,o woman1 great is thy faith3 be it done to thee as thou wilt3 and her daughter was cured from that hour4 #ae3bi4 ,and when ,jesus had passed away from thence1 he came nigh the sea of ,galilee3 and going up into a mountain1 he sat there4 #ae3cj4 ,and there came to him great multitudes1 having with them the dumb1 the blind1 the lame1 the maimed1 and many others3 and they cast them down at his feet1 and he healed them3 #ae3ca4 ,so that the multitudes marvelled seeing the dumb speak1 the lame walk1 the blind see3 and they glorified the ,god of ,israel4 #ae3cb4 ,and ,jesus called together his disciples1 and said3 ,i have compassion on the multitudes1 because they continue with me now three days1 and have not what to eat1 and ,i will not send them away fasting1 lest they faint in the way4 #ae3cc4 ,and the disciples say unto him3 ,whence then should we have so many loaves in the desert1 as to fill so great a multitude8 #ae3cd4 ,and ,jesus said to them3 ,how many loaves have you8 ,but they said3 ,seven1 and a few little fishes4 #ae3ce4 ,and he commanded the multitude to sit down upon the ground4 #ae3cf4 ,and taking the seven loaves and the fishes1 and giving thanks1 he brake1 and gave to his disciples1 and the disciples gave to the people4 #ae3cg4 ,and they did all eat1 and had their fill4 ,and they took up seven baskets full1 of what remained of the fragments4 #ae3ch4 ,and they that did eat1 were four thousand men1 beside children and women4 #ae3ci4 ,and having dismissed the multitude1 he went up into a boat1 and came into the coasts of ,magedan4 ,matthew ,chapter #af ,christ refuses to shew the ,pharisees a sign from heaven4 ,peter's confession is rewarded4 ,he is rebuked for opposing ,christ's passion4 ,all his followers must deny themselves4 #af3a4 ,and there came to him the ,pharisees and ,sadducees tempting3 and they asked him to shew them a sign from heaven4 #af3b4 ,but he answered and said to them3 ,when it is evening1 you say1 ,it will be fair weather1 for the sky is red4 #af3c4 ,and in the morning3 ,to day there will be a storm1 for the sky is red and lowering4 ,you know then how to discern the face of the sky3 and can you not know the signs of the times8 #af3d4 ,a wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign3 and a sign shall not be given it1 but the sign of ,jonas the prophet4 ,and he left them1 and went away4 #af3e4 ,and when his disciples were come over the water1 they had forgotten to take bread4 #af3f4 ,who said to them3 ,take heed and beware of the leaven of the ,pharisees and ,sadducees4 #af3g4 ,but they thought within themselves1 saying3 ,because we have taken no bread4 #af3h4 ,and ,jesus knowing it1 said3 ,why do you think within yourselves1 ,o ye of little faith1 for that you have no bread8 #af3i4 ,do you not yet understand1 neither do you remember the five loaves among five thousand men1 and how many baskets you took up8 #af3aj4 ,nor the seven loaves1 among four thousand men1 and how many baskets you took up8 #af3aa4 ,why do you not understand that it was not concerning bread ,i said to you3 ,beware of the leaven of the ,pharisees and ,sadducees8 #af3ab4 ,then they understood that he said not that they should beware of the leaven of bread1 but of the doctrine of the ,pharisees and ,sadducees4 #af3ac4 ,and ,jesus came into the quarters of ,cesarea ,philippi3 and he asked his disciples1 saying3 ,whom do men say that the ,son of man is8 #af3ad4 ,but they said3 ,some ,john the ,baptist1 and other some ,elias1 and others ,jeremias1 or one of the prophets4 #af3ae4 ,jesus saith to them3 ,but whom do you say that ,i am8 #af3af4 ,simon ,peter answered and said3 ,thou art ,christ1 the ,son of the living ,god4 #af3ag4 ,and ,jesus answering said to him3 ,blessed art thou1 ,simon ,bar-,jona3 because flesh and blood hath not revealed it to thee1 but my ,father who is in heaven4 #af3ah4 ,and ,i say to thee3 ,that thou art ,peter2 and upon this rock ,i will build my church1 and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it4 ,thou art ,peter1 etc444 ,as ,st4 ,peter1 by divine revelation1 here made a solemn profession of his faith of the divinity of ,christ2 so in recompense of this faith and profession1 our ,lord here declares to him the dignity to which he is pleased to raise him3 viz41 that he to whom he had already given the name of ,peter1 signifying a rock1 ,st4 ,john #a4 #db1 should be a rock indeed1 of invincible strength1 for the support of the building of the church2 in which building he should be1 next to ,christ himself1 the chief foundation stone1 in quality of chief pastor1 ruler1 and governor2 and should have accordingly all fulness of ecclesiastical power1 signified by the keys of the kingdom of heaven4 ,upon this rock1 etc444 ,the words of ,christ to ,peter1 spoken in the vulgar language of the ,jews which our ,lord made use of1 were the same as if he had said in ,english1 ,thou art a ,rock1 and upon this rock ,i will build my church4 ,so that1 by the plain course of the words1 ,peter is here declared to be the rock1 upon which the church was to be built3 ,christ himself being both the principal foundation and founder of the same4 ,where also note1 that ,christ1 by building his house1 that is1 his church1 upon a rock1 has thereby secured it against all storms and floods1 like the wise builder1 ,st4 ,matt4 #g4 #bd1 #be4 ,the gates of hell1 etc444 ,that is1 the powers of darkness1 and whatever ,satan can do1 either by himself1 or his agents4 ,for as the church is here likened to a house1 or fortress1 built on a rock2 so the adverse powers are likened to a contrary house or fortress1 the gates of which1 that is1 the whole strength1 and all the efforts it can make1 will never be able to prevail over the city or church of ,christ4 ,by this promise we are fully assured1 that neither idolatry1 heresy1 nor any pernicious error whatsoever shall at any time prevail over the church of ,christ4 #af3ai4 ,and ,i will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven4 ,and whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth1 it shall be bound also in heaven3 and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth1 it shall be loosed also in heaven4 ,loose on earth444 ,the loosing the bands of temporal punishments due to sins1 is called an indulgence2 the power of which is here granted4 #af3bj4 ,then he commanded his disciples1 that they should tell no one that he was ,jesus the ,christ4 #af3ba4 ,from that time ,jesus began to shew to his disciples1 that he must go to ,jerusalem1 and suffer many things from the ancients and scribes and chief priests1 and be put to death1 and the third day rise again4 #af3bb4 ,and ,peter taking him1 began to rebuke him1 saying3 ,lord1 be it far from thee1 this shall not be unto thee4 ,and ,peter taking him444 ,that is1 taking him aside1 out of a tender love1 respect and zeal for his ,lord and ,master's honour1 began to expostulate with him1 as it were to rebuke him1 saying1 ,lord1 far be it from thee to suffer death2 but the ,lord said to ,peter1 ver4 #bc1 ,go behind me1 ,satan4 ,these words may signify1 ,begone from me2 but the holy ,fathers expound them otherwise1 that is1 come after me1 or follow me2 and by these words the ,lord would have ,peter to follow him in his suffering1 and not to oppose the divine will by contradiction2 for the word satan means in ,hebrew an adversary1 or one that opposes4 #af3bc4 ,who turning1 said to ,peter3 ,go behind me1 ,satan1 thou art a scandal unto me3 because thou savourest not the things that are of ,god1 but the things that are of men4 #af3bd4 ,then ,jesus said to his disciples3 ,if any man will come after me1 let him deny himself1 and take up his cross1 and follow me4 #af3be4 ,for he that will save his life1 shall lose it3 and he that shall lose his life for my sake1 shall find it4 #af3bf4 ,for what doth it profit a man1 if he gain the whole world and suffer the loss of his own soul8 ,or what exchange shall a man give for his soul8 #af3bg4 ,for the ,son of man shall come in the glory of his ,father with his angels3 and then will he render to every man according to his works4 #af3bh4 ,amen ,i say to you1 there are some of them that stand here1 that shall not taste death1 till they see the ,son of man coming in his kingdom4 ,matthew ,chapter #ag ,the ,transfiguration of ,christ3 ,he cures the lunatic child3 foretells his passion2 and pays the didrachma4 #ag3a4 ,and after six days ,jesus taketh unto him ,peter and ,james1 and ,john his brother1 and bringeth them up into a high mountain apart3 #ag3b4 ,and he was transfigured before them4 ,and his face did shine as the sun3 and his garments became white as snow4 #ag3c4 ,and behold there appeared to them ,moses and ,elias talking with him4 #ag3d4 ,and ,peter answering1 said to ,jesus3 ,lord1 it is good for us to be here3 if thou wilt1 let us make here three tabernacles1 one for thee1 and one for ,moses1 and one for ,elias4 #ag3e4 ,and as he was yet speaking1 behold a bright cloud overshadowed them4 ,and lo a voice out of the cloud1 saying3 ,this is my beloved ,son1 in whom ,i am well pleased3 hear ye him4 #ag3f4 ,and the disciples hearing fell upon their face1 and were very much afraid4 #ag3g4 ,and ,jesus came and touched them3 and said to them3 ,arise1 and fear not4 #ag3h4 ,and they lifting up their eyes1 saw no one1 but only ,jesus4 #ag3i4 ,and as they came down from the mountain1 ,jesus charged them1 saying3 ,tell the vision to no man1 till the ,son of man be risen from the dead4 #ag3aj4 ,and his disciples asked him1 saying3 ,why then do the scribes say that ,elias must come first8 #ag3aa4 ,but he answering1 said to them3 ,elias indeed shall come1 and restore all things4 #ag3ab4 ,but ,i say to you1 that ,elias is already come1 and they knew him not1 ,but have done unto him whatsoever they had a mind4 ,so also the ,son of man shall suffer from them4 #ag3ac4 ,then the disciples understood1 that he had spoken to them of ,john the ,baptist4 #ag3ad4 ,and when he was come to the multitude1 there came to him a man falling down on his knees before him saying3 ,lord1 have pity on my son1 for he is a lunatic1 and suffereth much3 for he falleth often into the fire1 and often into the water4 #ag3ae4 ,and ,i brought him to thy disciples1 and they could not cure him4 #ag3af4 ,then ,jesus answered and said3 ,o unbelieving and perverse generation1 how long shall ,i be with you8 ,how long shall ,i suffer you8 ,bring him hither to me4 #ag3ag4 ,and ,jesus rebuked him1 and the devil went out of him1 and the child was cured from that hour4 #ag3ah4 ,then came the disciples to ,jesus secretly1 and said3 ,why could not we cast him out8 #ag3ai4 ,jesus said to them3 ,because of your unbelief4 ,for1 amen ,i say to you1 if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed1 you shall say to this mountain3 ,remove from hence hither1 and it shall remove3 and nothing shall be impossible to you4 ,as a grain of mustard seed444 ,that is1 a perfect faith2 which in its properties1 and its fruits1 resembles the grain of mustard seed1 in the parable1 chap4 #ac4 #ca4 #ag3bj4 ,but this kind is not cast out but by prayer and fasting4 #ag3ba4 ,and when they abode together in ,galilee1 ,jesus said to them3 ,the ,son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men3 #ag3bb4 ,and they shall kill him1 and the third day he shall rise again4 ,and they were troubled exceedingly4 #ag3bc4 ,and when they were come to ,capharnaum1 they that received the didrachmas1 came to ,peter1 and said to him3 ,doth not your master pay the didrachma8 ,the didrachmas444 ,a didrachma was half a sicle1 or half a stater2 that is1 about #ae;d4 ,english3 which was a tax laid upon every head for the service of the temple4 #ag3bd4 ,he said3 ,yes4 ,and when he was come into the house1 ,jesus prevented him1 saying3 ,what is thy opinion1 ,simon8 ,the kings of the earth1 of whom do they receive tribute or custom1 of their own children1 or of strangers8 #ag3be4 ,and he said3 ,of strangers4 ,jesus said to him3 ,then the children are free4 #ag3bf4 ,but that we may not scandalize them1 go to the sea1 and cast in a hook3 and that fish which shall first come up1 take3 and when thou hast opened it's mouth1 thou shalt find a stater3 take that1 and give it to them for me and thee4 ,matthew ,chapter #ah ,christ teaches humility1 to beware of scandal1 and to flee the occasions of sin3 to denounce to the church incorrigible sinners1 and to look upon such as refuse to hear the church as heathens4 ,he promises to his disciples the power of binding and loosing3 and that he will be in the midst of their assemblies4 ,no forgiveness for them that will not forgive4 #ah3a4 ,at that hour the disciples came to ,jesus1 saying3 ,who1 thinkest thou1 is the greater in the kingdom of heaven8 #ah3b4 ,and ,jesus1 calling unto him a little child1 set him in the midst of them4 #ah3c4 ,and said3 amen ,i say to you1 unless you be converted1 and become as little children1 you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven4 #ah3d4 ,whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child1 he is the greater in the kingdom of heaven4 #ah3e4 ,and he that shall receive one such little child in my name1 receiveth me4 #ah3f4 ,but he that shall scandalize one of these little ones that believe in me1 it were better for him that a millstone should be hanged about his neck1 and that he should be drowned in the depth of the sea4 ,shall scandalize444 ,that is1 shall put a stumblingblock in their way1 and cause them to fall into sin4 #ah3g4 ,woe to the world because of scandals4 ,for it must needs be that scandals come3 but nevertheless woe to that man by whom the scandal cometh4 ,it must needs be1 etc444 ,viz41 considering the wickedness and corruption of the world4 #ah3h4 ,and if thy hand1 or thy foot1 scandalize thee1 cut it off1 and cast it from thee4 ,it is better for thee to go into life maimed or lame1 than having two hands or two feet1 to be cast into everlasting fire4 ,scandalize thee444 ,that is1 cause thee to offend4 #ah3i4 ,and if thy eye scandalize thee1 pluck it out1 and cast it from thee4 ,it is better for thee having one eye to enter into life1 than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire4 #ah3aj4 ,see that you despise not one of these little ones3 for ,i say to you1 that their angels in heaven always see the face of my ,father who is in heaven4 #ah3aa4 ,for the ,son of man is come to save that which was lost4 #ah3ab4 ,what think you8 ,if a man have an hundred sheep1 and one of them should go astray3 doth he not leave the ninety-nine in the mountains1 and goeth to seek that which is gone astray8 #ah3ac4 ,and if it so be that he find it3 ,amen ,i say to you1 he rejoiceth more for that1 than for the ninety-nine that went not astray4 #ah3ad4 ,even so it is not the will of your ,father1 who is in heaven1 that one of these little ones should perish4 #ah3ae4 ,but if thy brother shall offend against thee1 go1 and rebuke him between thee and him alone4 ,if he shall hear thee1 thou shalt gain thy brother4 #ah3af4 ,and if he will not hear thee1 take with thee one or two more3 that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may stand4 #ah3ag4 ,and if he will not hear them3 tell the church4 ,and if he will not hear the church1 let him be to thee as the heathen and publican4 #ah3ah4 ,amen ,i say to you1 whatsoever you shall bind upon earth1 shall be bound also in heaven3 and whatsoever you shall loose upon earth1 shall be loosed also in heaven4 #ah3ai4 ,again ,i say to you1 that if two of you shall consent upon earth1 concerning anything whatsoever they shall ask1 it shall be done to them by my ,father who is in heaven4 #ah3bj4 ,for where there are two or three gathered together in my name1 there am ,i in the midst of them4 ,there am ,i in the midst of them444 ,this is understood of such assemblies only as are gathered in the name and authority of ,christ2 and in unity of the church of ,christ4 ,st4 ,cyprian1 ,de ,unitate ,ecclesiae4 #ah3ba4 ,then came ,peter unto him and said3 ,lord1 how often shall my brother offend against me1 and ,i forgive him8 till seven times8 #ah3bb4 ,jesus saith to him3 ,i say not to thee1 till seven times2 but till seventy times seven times4 #ah3bc4 ,therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened to a king1 who would take an account of his servants4 #ah3bd4 ,and when he had begun to take the account1 one as brought to him1 that owed him ten thousand talents4 ,talents444 ,a talent was seven hundred and fifty ounces of silver1 which at the rate of five shillings to the ounce is a hundred and eighty-seven pounds ten shillings sterling4 #ah3be4 ,and as he had not wherewith to pay it1 his lord commanded that he should be sold1 and his wife and children1 and all that he had1 and payment to be made4 #ah3bf4 ,but that servant falling down1 besought him1 saying3 ,have patience with me1 and ,i will pay thee all4 #ah3bg4 ,and the lord of that servant being moved with pity1 let him go and forgave him the debt4 #ah3bh4 ,but when that servant was gone out1 he found one of his fellow- servants that owed him an hundred pence3 and laying hold of him1 he throttled him1 saying3 ,pay what thou owest4 ,pence444 ,the ,roman penny was the eighth part of an ounce1 that is1 about sevenpence half-penny ,english4 #ah3bi4 ,and his fellow-servant falling down1 besought him1 saying3 ,have patience with me1 and ,i will pay thee all4 #ah3cj4 ,and he would not3 but went and cast him into prison1 till he paid the debt4 #ah3ca4 ,now his fellow servants seeing what was done1 were very much grieved1 and they came1 and told their lord all that was done4 #ah3cb4 ,then his lord called him3 and said to him3 ,thou wicked servant1 ,i forgave thee all the debt1 because thou besoughtest me3 #ah3cc4 ,shouldst not thou then have had compassion also on thy fellow servant1 even as ,i had compassion on thee8 #ah3cd4 ,and his lord being angry1 delivered him to the torturers until he paid all the debt4 #ah3ce4 ,so also shall my heavenly ,father do to you1 if you forgive not every one his brother from your hearts4 ,matthew ,chapter #ai ,christ declares matrimony to be indissoluble3 he recommends the making one's self an eunuch for the kingdom of heaven2 and parting with all things for him4 ,he shews the danger of riches1 and the reward of leaving all to follow him4 #ai3a4 ,and it came to pass when ,jesus had ended these words1 he departed from ,galilee and came into the coasts of ,judea1 beyond ,jordan4 #ai3b4 ,and great multitudes followed him3 and he healed them there4 #ai3c4 ,and there came to him the ,pharisees tempting him1 saying3 ,is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause8 #ai3d4 ,who answering1 said to them3 ,have ye not read1 that he who made man from the beginning1 made them male and female8 ,and he said3 #ai3e4 ,for this cause shall a man leave father and mother1 and shall cleave to his wife1 and they two shall be in one flesh4 #ai3f4 ,therefore now they are not two1 but one flesh4 ,what therefore ,god hath joined together1 let no man put asunder4 #ai3g4 ,they say to him3 ,why then did ,moses command to give a bill of divorce1 and to put away8 #ai3h4 ,he saith to them3 ,because ,moses by reason of the hardness of your heart permitted you to put away your wives3 but from the beginning it was not so4 #ai3i4 ,and ,i say to you1 that whosoever shall put away his wife1 except it be for fornication1 and shall marry another1 committeth adultery3 and he that shall marry her that is put away1 committeth adultery4 ,except it be1 etc444 ,in the case of fornication1 that is1 of adultery1 the wife may be put away3 but even then the husband cannot marry another as long as the wife is living4 #ai3aj4 ,his disciples say unto him3 ,if the case of a man with his wife be so1 it is not expedient to marry4 #ai3aa4 ,who said to them3 ,all men take not this word1 but they to whom it is given4 ,all men take not this word444 ,that is1 all receive not the gift of living singly and chastely1 unless they pray for the grace of ,god to enable them to live so1 and for some it may be necessary to that end to fast as well as pray3 and to those it is given from above4 #ai3ab4 ,for there are eunuchs1 who were born so from their mothers womb3 and there are eunuchs1 who were made so by men3 and there are eunuchs1 who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven4 ,he that can take1 let him take it4 ,there are eunuchs1 who have made themselves eunuchs1 for the kingdom of heaven444 ,this text is not to be taken in the literal sense2 but means1 that there are such1 who have taken a firm and commendable resolution of leading a single and chaste life1 in order to serve ,god in a more perfect state than those who marry3 as ,st4 ,paul clearly shews4 #a ,cor4 #g4 #cg1 #ch4 #ai3ac4 ,then were little children presented to him1 that he should impose hands upon them and pray4 ,and the disciples rebuked them4 #ai3ad4 ,but ,jesus said to them3 ,suffer the little children1 and forbid them not to come to me3 for the kingdom of heaven is for such4 #ai3ae4 ,and when he had imposed hands upon them1 he departed from thence4 #ai3af4 ,and behold one came and said to him3 ,good master1 what good shall ,i do that ,i may have life everlasting8 #ai3ag4 ,who said to him3 ,why askest thou me concerning good8 ,one is good1 ,god4 ,but if thou wilt enter into life1 keep the commandments4 #ai3ah4 ,he said to him3 ,which8 ,and ,jesus said3 ,thou shalt do no murder1 ,thou shalt not commit adultery1 ,thou shalt not steal1 ,thou shalt not bear false witness4 #ai3ai4 ,honour thy father and thy mother3 and1 ,thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself4 #ai3bj4 ,the young man saith to him3 ,all these have ,i kept from my youth1 what is yet wanting to me8 #ai3ba4 ,jesus saith to him3 ,if thou wilt be perfect1 go sell what thou hast1 and give to the poor1 and thou shalt have treasure in heaven3 and come1 follow me4 #ai3bb4 ,and when the young man had heard this word1 he went away sad3 for he had great possessions4 #ai3bc4 ,then ,jesus said to his disciples3 ,amen1 ,i say to you1 that a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven4 #ai3bd4 ,and again ,i say to you3 ,it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle1 than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven4 #ai3be4 ,and when they had heard this1 the disciples wondered much1 saying3 ,who then can be saved8 #ai3bf4 ,and ,jesus beholding1 said to them3 ,with men this is impossible3 but with ,god all things are possible4 #ai3bg4 ,then ,peter answering1 said to him3 ,behold we have left all things1 and have followed thee3 what therefore shall we have8 #ai3bh4 ,and ,jesus said to them3 ,amen ,i say to you1 that you who have followed me1 in the regeneration1 when the ,son of man shall sit on the seat of his majesty1 you also shall sit on twelve seats judging the twelve tribes of ,israel4 #ai3bi4 ,and every one that hath left house1 or brethren1 or sisters1 or father1 or mother1 or wife1 or children1 or lands for my name's sake1 shall receive an hundredfold1 and shall possess life everlasting4 #ai3cj4 ,and many that are first1 shall be last3 and the last shall be first4 ,matthew ,chapter #bj ,the parable of the labourers in the vineyard4 ,the ambition of the two sons of ,zebedee4 ,christ gives sight to two blind men4 #bj3a4 ,the kingdom of heaven is like to an householder1 who went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard4 #bj3b4 ,and having agreed with the labourers for a penny a day1 he sent them into his vineyard4 #bj3c4 ,and going out about the third hour1 he saw others standing in the marketplace idle4 #bj3d4 ,and he said to them3 ,go you also into my vineyard1 and ,i will give you what shall be just4 #bj3e4 ,and they went their way4 ,and again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour1 and did in like manner4 #bj3f4 ,but about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing1 and he saith to them3 ,why stand you here all the day idle8 #bj3g4 ,they say to him3 ,because no man hath hired us4 ,he saith to them3 ,go ye also into my vineyard4 #bj3h4 ,and when evening was come1 the lord of the vineyard saith to his steward3 ,call the labourers and pay them their hire1 beginning from the last even to the first4 #bj3i4 ,when therefore they were come that came about the eleventh hour1 they received every man a penny4 #bj3aj4 ,but when the first also came1 they thought that they should receive more3 ,and they also received every man a penny4 #bj3aa4 ,and receiving it they murmured against the master of the house1 #bj3ab4 ,saying3 ,these last have worked but one hour and thou hast made them equal to us1 that have borne the burden of the day and the heats4 #bj3ac4 ,but he answering said to one of them3 friend1 ,i do thee no wrong3 didst thou not agree with me for a penny8 #bj3ad4 ,take what is thine1 and go thy way3 ,i will also give to this last even as to thee4 #bj3ae4 ,or1 is it not lawful for me to do what ,i will8 ,is thy eye evil1 because ,i am good8 ,what ,i will444 ,viz41 with my own1 and in matters that depend on my own bounty4 #bj3af4 ,so shall the last be first and the first last4 ,for many are called but few chosen4 #bj3ag4 ,and ,jesus going up to ,jerusalem1 took the twelve disciples apart and said to them3 #bj3ah4 ,behold we go up to ,jerusalem1 and the ,son of man shall be betrayed to the chief priests and the scribes3 and they shall condemn him to death4 #bj3ai4 ,and shall deliver him to the ,gentiles to be mocked and scourged and crucified3 and the third day he shall rise again4 #bj3bj4 ,then came to him the mother of the sons of ,zebedee with her sons1 adoring and asking something of him4 #bj3ba4 ,who said to her3 ,what wilt thou8 ,she saith to him3 say that these my two sons may sit1 the one on thy right hand1 and the other on thy left1 in thy kingdom4 #bj3bb4 ,and ,jesus answering1 said3 ,you know not what you ask4 ,can you drink the chalice that ,i shall drink8 ,they say to him3 ,we can4 #bj3bc4 ,he saith to them3 ,my chalice indeed you shall drink2 but to sit on my right or left hand is not mine to give to you1 but to them for whom it is prepared by my ,father4 #bj3bd4 ,and the ten1 hearing it1 were moved with indignation against the two brethren4 #bj3be4 ,but ,jesus called them to him and said3 ,you know that the princes of the ,gentiles lord it over them2 and that they that are the greater1 exercise power upon them4 #bj3bf4 ,it shall not be so among you3 but whosoever is the greater among you1 let him be your minister4 #bj3bg4 ,and he that will be first among you shall be your servant4 #bj3bh4 ,even as the ,son of man is not come to be ministered unto1 but to minister and to give his life a redemption for many4 #bj3bi4 ,and when they went out from ,jericho1 a great multitude followed him4 #bj3cj4 ,and behold two blind men sitting by the way side heard that ,jesus passed by4 ,and they cried out1 saying3 ,o ,lord1 thou son of ,david1 have mercy on us4 #bj3ca4 ,and the multitude rebuked them that they should hold their peace4 ,but they cried out the more1 saying3 ,o ,lord1 thou son of ,david1 have mercy on us4 #bj3cb4 ,and ,jesus stood and called them and said3 ,what will ye that ,i do to you8 #bj3cc4 ,they say to him3 ,lord1 that our eyes be opened4 #bj3cd4 ,and ,jesus having compassion on them1 touched their eyes4 ,and immediately they saw and followed him4 ,matthew ,chapter #ba ,christ rides into ,jerusalem upon an ass4 ,he casts the buyers and sellers out of the temple1 curses the fig tree and puts to silence the priests and scribes4 #ba3a4 ,and when they drew nigh to ,jerusalem and were come to ,bethphage1 unto mount ,olivet1 then ,jesus sent two disciples1 #ba3b4 ,saying to them3 ,go ye into the village that is over against you3 and immediately you shall find an ass tied and a colt with her4 ,loose them and bring them to me4 #ba3c4 ,and if any man shall say anything to you1 say ye that the ,lord hath need of them4 ,and forthwith he will let them go4 #ba3d4 ,now all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet1 saying3 #ba3e4 ,tell ye the daughter of ,sion3 ,behold thy king cometh to thee1 meek and sitting upon an ass and a colt1 the foal of her that is used to the yoke4 #ba3f4 ,and the disciples going1 did as ,jesus commanded them4 #ba3g4 ,and they brought the ass and the colt and laid their garments upon them and made him sit thereon4 #ba3h4 ,and a very great multitude spread their garments in the way3 and others cut boughs from the trees and strewed them in the way4 #ba3i4 ,and the multitudes that went before and that followed cried1 saying3 ,hosanna to the son of ,david3 ,blessed is he that cometh in the name of the ,lord3 ,hosanna in the highest4 #ba3aj4 ,and when he was come into ,jerusalem1 the whole city was moved1 saying3 ,who is this8 #ba3aa4 ,and the people said3 ,this is ,jesus1 the prophet from ,nazareth of ,galilee4 #ba3ab4 ,and ,jesus went into the temple of ,god and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple and overthrew the tables of the money changers and the chairs of them that sold doves4 #ba3ac4 ,and he saith to them3 ,it is written1 ,my house shall be called the house of prayer2 but you have made it a den of thieves4 #ba3ad4 ,and there came to him the blind and the lame in the temple3 and he healed them4 #ba3ae4 ,and the chief priests and scribes1 seeing the wonderful things that he did and the children crying in the temple and saying3 ,hosanna to the son of ,david1 were moved with indignation1 #ba3af4 ,and said to him3 ,hearest thou what these say8 ,and ,jesus said to them3 ,yea1 have you never read3 ,out of the mouth of infants and of sucklings thou hast perfected praise8 #ba3ag4 ,and leaving them1 he went out of the city into ,bethania and remained here4 #ba3ah4 ,and in the morning1 returning into the city1 he was hungry4 #ba3ai4 ,and seeing a certain fig tree by the way side1 he came to it and found nothing on it but leaves only4 ,and he saith to it3 ,may no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever4 ,and immediately the fig tree withered away4 #ba3bj4 ,and the disciples seeing it wondered1 saying3 ,how is it presently withered away8 #ba3ba4 ,and ,jesus answering1 said to them3 ,amen1 ,i say to you1 if you shall have faith and stagger not1 not only this of the fig tree shall you do1 but also if you shall say to this mountain1 ,take up and cast thyself into the sea1 it shall be done4 #ba3bb4 ,and all things whatsoever you shall ask in prayer believing1 you shall receive4 #ba3bc4 ,and when he was come into the temple1 there came to him1 as he was teaching1 the chief priests and ancients of the people1 saying3 ,by what authority dost thou these things8 ,and who hath given thee this authority8 #ba3bd4 ,jesus answering1 said to them3 ,i also will ask you one word1 which if you shall tell me1 ,i will also tell you by what authority ,i do these things4 #ba3be4 ,the baptism of ,john1 whence was it8 ,from heaven or from men8 ,but they thought within themselves1 saying3 #ba3bf4 ,if we shall say1 from heaven1 he will say to us3 ,why then did you not believe him8 ,but if we shall say1 from men1 we are afraid of the multitude3 for all held ,john as a prophet4 #ba3bg4 ,and answering ,jesus1 they said3 ,we know not4 ,he also said to them3 ,neither do ,i tell you by what authority ,i do these things4 #ba3bh4 ,but what think you8 ,a certain man had two sons3 and coming to the first1 he said3 ,son1 go work to day in my vineyard4 #ba3bi4 ,and he answering1 said3 ,i will not4 ,but afterwards1 being moved with repentance1 he went4 #ba3cj4 ,and coming to the other1 he said in like manner4 ,and he answering said3 ,i go1 ,sir4 ,and he went not4 #ba3ca4 ,which of the two did the father's will8 ,they say to him3 ,the first4 ,jesus saith to them3 ,amen ,i say to you that the publicans and the harlots shall go into the kingdom of ,god before you4 #ba3cb4 ,for ,john came to you in the way of justice3 and you did not believe him4 ,but the publicans and the harlots believed him3 but you1 seeing it1 did not even afterwards repent1 that you might believe him4 #ba3cc4 ,hear ye another parable4 ,there was a man1 an householder1 who planted a vineyard and made a hedge round about it and dug in it a press and built a tower and let it out to husbandmen and went into a strange country4 #ba3cd4 ,and when the time of the fruits drew nigh1 he sent his servants to the husbandmen that they might receive the fruits thereof4 #ba3ce4 ,and the husbandmen laying hands on his servants1 beat one and killed another and stoned another4 #ba3cf4 ,again he sent other servants1 more than the former2 and they did to them in like manner4 #ba3cg4 ,and last of all he sent to them his son1 saying3 ,they will reverence my son4 #ba3ch4 ,but the husbandmen seeing the son1 said among themselves3 ,this is the heir3 come1 let us kill him1 and we shall have his inheritance4 #ba3ci4 ,and taking him1 they cast him forth out of the vineyard and killed him4 #ba3dj4 ,when therefore the lord of the vineyard shall come1 what will he do to those husbandmen8 #ba3da4 ,they say to him3 ,he will bring those evil men to an evil end and let out his vineyard to other husbandmen that shall render him the fruit in due season4 #ba3db4 ,jesus saith to them3 ,have you never read in the ,scriptures3 ,the stone which the builders rejected1 the same is become the head of the corner8 ,by the ,lord this has been done2 and it is wonderful in our eyes4 #ba3dc4 ,therefore ,i say to you that the kingdom of ,god shall be taken from you and shall be given to a nation yielding the fruits thereof4 #ba3dd4 ,and whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken3 but on whomsoever it shall fall1 it shall grind him to powder4 #ba3de4 ,and when the chief priests and ,pharisees had heard his parables1 they knew that he spoke of them4 #ba3df4 ,and seeking to lay hands on him1 they feared the multitudes1 because they held him as a prophet4 ,matthew ,chapter #bb ,the parable of the marriage feast4 ,christ orders tribute to be paid to ,caesar4 ,he confutes the ,sadducees1 shews which is the first commandment in the law and puzzles the ,pharisees4 #bb3a4 ,and ,jesus answering1 spoke again in parables to them1 saying3 #bb3b4 ,the kingdom of heaven is likened to a king who made a marriage for his son4 #bb3c4 ,and he sent his servants to call them that were invited to the marriage3 and they would not come4 #bb3d4 ,again he sent other servants1 saying3 ,tell them that were invited1 ,behold1 ,i have prepared my dinner3 my beeves and fatlings are killed1 and all things are ready4 ,come ye to the marriage4 #bb3e4 ,but they neglected and went their ways1 one to his farm and another to his merchandise4 #bb3f4 ,and the rest laid hands on his servants and1 having treated them contumeliously1 put them to death4 #bb3g4 ,but when the king had heard of it1 he was angry3 and sending his armies1 he destroyed those murderers and burnt their city4 #bb3h4 ,then he saith to his servants3 ,the marriage indeed is ready2 but they that were invited were not worthy4 #bb3i4 ,go ye therefore into the highways2 and as many as you shall find1 call to the marriage4 #bb3aj4 ,and his servants going forth into the ways1 gathered together all that they found1 both bad and good3 and the marriage was filled with guests4 #bb3aa4 ,and the king went in to see the guests3 and he saw there a man who had not on a wedding garment4 #bb3ab4 ,and he saith to him3 ,friend1 how camest thou in hither not having on a wedding garment8 ,but he was silent4 #bb3ac4 ,then the king said to the waiters3 ,bind his hands and feet1 and cast him into the exterior darkness4 ,there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth4 #bb3ad4 ,for many are called1 but few are chosen4 #bb3ae4 ,then the ,pharisees going1 consulted among themselves how to insnare him in his speech4 #bb3af4 ,and they sent to him their disciples with the ,herodians1 saying3 ,master1 we know that thou art a true speaker and teachest the way of ,god in truth4 ,neither carest thou for any man3 for thou dost not regard the person of men4 ,the ,herodians444 ,that is1 some that belonged to ,herod1 and that joined with him in standing up for the necessity of paying tribute to ,caesar1 that is1 to the ,roman emperor4 ,some are of opinion that there was a sect among the ,jews called ,herodians1 from their maintaining that ,herod was the ,messias4 #bb3ag4 ,tell us therefore what dost thou think8 ,is it lawful to give tribute to ,caesar1 or not8 #bb3ah4 ,but ,jesus knowing their wickedness1 said3 ,why do you tempt me1 ye hypocrites8 #bb3ai4 ,shew me the coin of the tribute4 ,and they offered him a penny4 #bb3bj4 ,and ,jesus saith to them3 ,whose image and inscription is this8 #bb3ba4 ,they say to him3 ,caesar's4 ,then he saith to them3 ,render therefore to ,caesar the things that are ,caesar's2 and to ,god1 the things that are ,god's4 #bb3bb4 ,and hearing this1 they wondered and1 leaving him1 went their ways4 #bb3bc4 ,that day there came to him the ,sadducees1 who say there is no resurrection2 and asked him1 #bb3bd4 ,saying3 ,master1 ,moses said3 ,if a man die having no son1 his brother shall marry his wife and raise up issue to his brother4 #bb3be4 ,now there were with us seven brethren3 and the first having married a wife1 died2 and not having issue1 left his wife to his brother4 #bb3bf4 ,in like manner the second and the third and so on1 to the seventh4 #bb3bg4 ,and last of all the woman died also4 #bb3bh4 ,at the resurrection therefore1 whose wife of the seven shall she be8 ,for they all had her4 #bb3bi4 ,and ,jesus answering1 said to them3 ,you err1 not knowing the ,scriptures nor the power of ,god4 #bb3cj4 ,for in the resurrection they shall neither marry nor be married1 but shall be as the angels of ,god in heaven4 #bb3ca4 ,and concerning the resurrection of the dead1 have you not read that which was spoken by ,god1 saying to you3 #bb3cb4 ,i am the ,god of ,abraham and the ,god of ,isaac and the ,god of ,jacob8 ,he is not the ,god of the dead but of the living4 #bb3cc4 ,and the multitudes hearing it were in admiration at his doctrine4 #bb3cd4 ,but the ,pharisees1 hearing that he had silenced the ,sadducees1 came together4 #bb3ce4 ,and one of them1 a doctor of the law1 asked him1 tempting him3 #bb3cf4 ,master1 which is the great commandment in the law8 #bb3cg4 ,jesus said to him3 ,thou shalt love the ,lord thy ,god with thy whole heart and with thy whole soul and with thy whole mind4 #bb3ch4 ,this is the greatest and the first commandment4 #bb3ci4 ,and the second is like to this3 ,thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself4 #bb3dj4 ,on these two commandments dependeth the whole law and the prophets4 #bb3da4 ,and the ,pharisees being gathered together1 ,jesus asked them1 #bb3db4 ,saying3 ,what think you of ,christ8 ,whose son is he8 ,they say to him3 ,david's4 #bb3dc4 ,he saith to them3 ,how then doth ,david in spirit call him ,lord1 saying3 #bb3dd4 ,the ,lord said to my ,lord3 ,sit on my right hand1 until ,i make thy enemies thy footstool8 #bb3de4 ,if ,david then call him ,lord1 how is he his son8 #bb3df4 ,and no man was able to answer him a word3 neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions4 ,matthew ,chapter #bc ,christ admonishes the people to follow the good doctrine1 not the bad example of the scribes and ,pharisees4 ,he warns his disciples not to imitate their ambition and denounces divers woes against them for their hypocrisy and blindness4 #bc3a4 ,then ,jesus spoke to the multitudes and to his disciples1 #bc3b4 ,saying3 ,the scribes and the ,pharisees have sitten on the chair of ,moses4 #bc3c4 ,all things therefore whatsoever they shall say to you1 observe and do3 but according to their works do ye not4 ,for they say1 and do not4 #bc3d4 ,for they bind heavy and insupportable burdens and lay them on men's shoulders3 but with a finger of their own they will not move them4 #bc3e4 ,and all their works they do for to be seen of men4 ,for they make their phylacteries broad and enlarge their fringes4 ,phylacteries444 that is1 parchments1 on which they wrote the ten commandments1 and carried them on their foreheads before their eyes3 which the ,pharisees affected to wear broader than other men2 so to seem more zealous for the law4 #bc3f4 ,and they love the first places at feasts and the first chairs in the synagogues1 #bc3g4 ,and salutations in the market place1 and to be called by men1 ,rabbi4 #bc3h4 ,but be not you called ,rabbi4 ,for one is your master3 and all you are brethren4 #bc3i4 ,and call none your father upon earth2 for one is your father1 who is in heaven4 ,call none your father--,neither be ye called masters1 etc444 ,the meaning is that our ,father in heaven is incomparably more to be regarded1 than any father upon earth3 and no master to be followed1 who would lead us away from ,christ4 ,but this does not hinder but that we are by the law of ,god to have a due respect both for our parents and spiritual fathers1 7#a ,cor4 #d4 #bc3ae17 and for our masters and teachers4 #bc3aj4 ,neither be ye called masters3 for one is your master1 ,christ4 #bc3aa4 ,he that is the greatest among you shall be your servant4 #bc3ab4 ,and whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled3 and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted4 #bc3ac4 ,but woe to you1 scribes and ,pharisees1 hypocrites1 because you shut the kingdom of heaven against men3 for you yourselves do not enter in and those that are going in1 you suffer not to enter4 #bc3ad4 ,woe to you scribes and ,pharisees1 hypocrites1 because you devour the houses of widows1 praying long prayers4 ,for this you shall receive the greater judgment4 #bc3ae4 ,woe to you1 scribes and ,pharisees1 hypocrites1 because you go round about the sea and the land to make one proselyte4 ,and when he is made1 you make him the child of hell twofold more than yourselves4 #bc3af4 ,woe to you1 blind guides1 that say1 ,whosoever shall swear by the temple1 it is nothing2 but he that shall swear by the gold of the temple is a debtor4 #bc3ag4 ,ye foolish and blind3 for whether is greater1 the gold or the temple that sanctifieth the gold8 #bc3ah4 ,and whosoever shall swear by the altar1 it is nothing2 but whosoever shall swear by the gift that is upon it is a debtor4 #bc3ai4 ,ye foolish and blind3 for whether is greater1 the gift or the altar that sanctifieth the gift8 #bc3bj4 ,he therefore that sweareth by the altar sweareth by it and by all things that are upon it4 #bc3ba4 ,and whosoever shall swear by the temple sweareth by it and by him that dwelleth in it4 #bc3bb4 ,and he that sweareth by heaven sweareth by the throne of ,god and by him that sitteth thereon4 #bc3bc4 ,woe to you1 scribes and ,pharisees1 hypocrites2 because you tithe mint and anise and cummin and have left the weightier things of the law3 judgment and mercy and faith4 ,these things you ought to have done and not to leave those undone4 #bc3bd4 ,blind guides1 who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel4 #bc3be4 ,woe to you1 scribes and ,pharisees1 hypocrites2 because you make clean the outside of the cup and of the dish1 but within you are full of rapine and uncleanness4 #bc3bf4 ,thou blind ,pharisee1 first make clean the inside of the cup and of the dish1 that the outside may become clean4 #bc3bg4 ,woe to you1 scribes and ,pharisees1 hypocrites2 because you are like to whited sepulchres1 which outwardly appear to men beautiful but within are full of dead men's bones and of all filthiness4 #bc3bh4 ,so you also outwardly indeed appear to men just3 but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity4 #bc3bi4 ,woe to you1 scribes and ,pharisees1 hypocrites1 that build the sepulchres of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the just1 ,build the sepulchres1 etc444 ,this is not blamed1 as if it were in itself evil to build or adorn the monuments of the prophets3 but the hypocrisy of the ,pharisees is here taxed2 who1 whilst they pretended to honour the memory of the prophets1 were persecuting even unto death the ,lord of the prophets4 #bc3cj4 ,and say3 ,if we had been in the days of our fathers1 we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets4 #bc3ca4 ,wherefore you are witnesses against yourselves1 that you are the sons of them that killed the prophets4 #bc3cb4 ,fill ye up then the measure of your fathers4 #bc3cc4 ,you serpents1 generation of vipers1 how will you flee from the judgment of hell8 #bc3cd4 ,therefore behold ,i send to you prophets and wise men and scribes3 and some of them you will put to death and crucify3 and some you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city4 #bc3ce4 ,that upon you may come all the just blood that hath been shed upon the earth1 from the blood of ,abel the just1 even unto the blood of ,zacharias the son of ,barachias1 whom you killed between the temple and the altar4 ,that upon you may come1 etc444 ,not that they should suffer more than their own sins justly deserved2 but that the justice of ,god should now fall upon them with such a final vengeance1 once for all1 as might comprise all the different kinds of judgments and punishments1 that had at any time before been inflicted for the shedding of just blood4 #bc3cf4 ,amen ,i say to you1 all these things shall come upon this generation4 #bc3cg4 ,jerusalem1 ,jerusalem1 thou that killest the prophets and stonest them that are sent unto thee1 how often would ,i have gathered together thy children1 as the hen doth gather her chickens under her wings1 and thou wouldst not8 #bc3ch4 ,behold1 your house shall be left to you1 desolate4 #bc3ci4 ,for ,i say to you1 you shall not see me henceforth till you say3 ,blessed is he that cometh in the name of the ,lord4 ,matthew ,chapter #bd ,christ foretells the destruction of the temple1 with the signs that shall come before it and before the last judgment4 ,we must always watch4 #bd3a4 ,and ,jesus being come out of the temple1 went away4 ,and his disciples came to shew him the buildings of the temple4 #bd3b4 ,and he answering1 said to them3 ,do you see all these things8 ,amen ,i say to you1 there shall not be left here a stone upon a stone that shall not be destroyed4 #bd3c4 ,and when he was sitting on mount ,olivet1 the disciples came to him privately1 saying3 ,tell us when shall these things be8 ,and what shall be the sign of thy coming and of the consummation of the world8 #bd3d4 ,and ,jesus answering1 said to them3 ,take heed that no man seduce you4 #bd3e4 ,for many will come in my name saying1 ,i am ,christ4 ,and they will seduce many4 #bd3f4 ,and you shall hear of wars and rumours of wars4 ,see that ye be not troubled4 ,for these things must come to pass3 but the end is not yet4 #bd3g4 ,for nation shall rise against nation1 and kingdom against kingdom3 ,and there shall be pestilences and famines and earthquakes in places4 #bd3h4 ,now all these are the beginnings of sorrows4 #bd3i4 ,then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted and shall put you to death3 and you shall be hated by all nations for my name's sake4 #bd3aj4 ,and then shall many be scandalized and shall betray one another and shall hate one another4 #bd3aa4 ,and many false prophets shall rise and shall seduce many4 #bd3ab4 ,and because iniquity hath abounded1 the charity of many shall grow cold4 #bd3ac4 ,but he that shall persevere to the end1 he shall be saved4 #bd3ad4 ,and this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world1 for a testimony to all nations3 and then shall the consummation come4 #bd3ae4 ,when therefore you shall see the abomination of desolation1 which was spoken of by ,daniel the prophet1 standing in the holy place3 he that readeth let him understand4 #bd3af4 ,then they that are in ,judea1 let them flee to the mountains3 #bd3ag4 ,and he that is on the housetop1 let him not come down to take any thing out of his house3 #bd3ah4 ,and he that is in the field1 let him not go back to take his coat4 #bd3ai4 ,and woe to them that are with child and that give suck in those days4 #bd3bj4 ,but pray that your flight be not in the winter or on the sabbath4 #bd3ba4 ,for there shall be then great tribulation1 such as hath not been from the beginning of the world until now1 neither shall be4 #bd3bb4 ,and unless those days had been shortened1 no flesh should be saved3 but for the sake of the elect those days shall be shortened4 #bd3bc4 ,then if any man shall say to you1 ,lo here is ,christ1 or there3 do not believe him4 #bd3bd4 ,for there shall arise false ,christs and false prophets and shall shew great signs and wonders1 insomuch as to deceive 7if possible7 even the elect4 #bd3be4 ,behold ,i have told it to you1 beforehand4 #bd3bf4 ,if therefore they shall say to you1 ,behold he is in the desert3 go ye not out4 ,behold he is in the closets3 believe it not4 #bd3bg4 ,for as lightning cometh out of the east and appeareth even into the west3 so shall also the cowling of the ,son of man be4 #bd3bh4 ,wheresoever the body shall be1 there shall the eagles also be gathered together4 ,wheresoever1 etc444 ,the coming of ,christ shall be sudden1 and manifest to all the world1 like lightning3 and wheresoever he shall come1 thither shall all mankind be gathered to him1 as eagles are gathered about a dead body4 #bd3bi4 ,and immediately after the tribulation of those days1 the sun shall be darkened and the moon shall not give her light and the stars shall fall from heaven and the powers of heaven shall be moved4 ,the stars444 ,or flaming meteors resembling stars4 #bd3cj4 ,and then shall appear the sign of the ,son of man in heaven4 ,and then shall all tribes of the earth mourn3 and they shall see the ,son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with much power and majesty4 ,the sign1 etc444 ,the cross of ,christ4 #bd3ca4 ,and he shall send his angels with a trumpet and a great voice3 and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds1 from the farthest parts of the heavens to the utmost bounds of them4 #bd3cb4 ,and from the fig tree learn a parable3 ,when the branch thereof is now tender and the leaves come forth1 you know that summer is nigh4 #bd3cc4 ,so you also1 when you shall see all these things1 know ye that it is nigh1 even at the doors4 #bd3cd4 ,amen ,i say to you that this generation shall not pass till all these things be done4 #bd3ce4 ,heaven and earth shall pass3 but my words shall not pass4 ,shall pass444 ,because they shall be changed at the end of the world into a new heaven and new earth4 #bd3cf4 ,but of that day and hour no one knoweth3 no1 not the angels of heaven1 but the ,father alone4 #bd3cg4 ,and as in the days of ,noe1 so shall also the coming of the ,son of man be4 #bd3ch4 ,for1 as in the days before the flood they were eating and drinking1 marrying and giving in marriage1 even till that day in which ,noe entered into the ark3 #bd3ci4 ,and they knew not till the flood came and took them all away3 so also shall the coming of the ,son of man be4 #bd3dj4 ,then two shall be in the field4 ,one shall be taken and one shall be left4 #bd3da4 ,two women shall be grinding at the mill4 ,one shall be taken and one shall be left4 #bd3db4 ,watch ye therefore1 because you know not what hour your ,lord will come4 #bd3dc4 ,but this know ye1 that1 if the goodman of the house knew at what hour the thief would come1 he would certainly watch and would not suffer his house to be broken open4 #bd3dd4 ,wherefore be you also ready1 because at what hour you know not the ,son of man will come4 #bd3de4 ,who1 thinkest thou1 is a faithful and wise servant1 whom his lord hath appointed over his family1 to give them meat in season8 #bd3df4 ,blessed is that servant1 whom when his lord shall come he shall find so doing4 #bd3dg4 ,amen ,i say to you3 he shall place him over all his goods4 #bd3dh4 ,but if that evil servant shall say in his heart3 ,my lord is long a coming3 #bd3di4 ,and shall begin to strike his fellow servants and shall eat and drink with drunkards3 #bd3ej4 ,the lord of that servant shall come in a day that he hopeth not and at an hour that he knoweth not3 #bd3ea4 ,and shall separate him and appoint his portion with the hypocrites4 ,there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth4 ,matthew ,chapter #be ,the parable of the ten virgins and of the talents4 ,the description of the last judgment4 #be3a4 ,then shall the kingdom of heaven be like to ten virgins1 who taking their lamps went out to meet the bridegroom and the bride4 #be3b4 ,and five of them were foolish and five wise4 #be3c4 ,but the five foolish1 having taken their lamps1 did not take oil with them4 #be3d4 ,but the wise took oil in their vessels with the lamps4 #be3e4 ,and the bridegroom tarrying1 they all slumbered and slept4 #be3f4 ,and at midnight there was a cry made3 ,behold the bridegroom cometh4 ,go ye forth to meet him4 #be3g4 ,then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps4 #be3h4 ,and the foolish said to the wise3 ,give us of your oil1 for our lamps are gone out4 #be3i4 ,the wise answered1 saying3 ,lest perhaps there be not enough for us and for you1 go ye rather to them that sell and buy for yourselves4 #be3aj4 ,now whilst they went to buy the bridegroom came3 and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage4 ,and the door was shut4 #be3aa4 ,but at last came also the other virgins1 saying3 ,lord1 ,lord1 open to us4 #be3ab4 ,but he answering said3 ,amen ,i say to you1 ,i know you not4 #be3ac4 ,watch ye therefore1 because you know not the day nor the hour4 #be3ad4 ,for even as a man going into a far country called his servants and delivered to them his goods2 #be3ae4 ,and to one he gave five talents1 and to another two1 and to another one1 to every one according to his proper ability3 and immediately he took his journey4 #be3af4 ,and he that had received the five talents went his way and traded with the same and gained other five4 #be3ag4 ,and in like manner he that had received the two gained other two4 #be3ah4 ,but he that had received the one1 going his way1 digged into the earth and hid his lord's money4 #be3ai4 ,but after a long time the lord of those servants came and reckoned with them4 #be3bj4 ,and he that had received the five talents coming1 brought other five talents1 saying3 ,lord1 thou didst deliver to me five talents4 ,behold ,i have gained other five over and above4 #be3ba4 ,his lord said to him3 ,well done1 good and faithful servant1 because thou hast been faithful over a few things1 ,i will place thee over many things4 ,enter thou into the joy of thy lord4 #be3bb4 ,and he also that had received the two talents came and said3 ,lord1 thou deliveredst two talents to me4 ,behold ,i have gained other two4 #be3bc4 ,his lord said to him3 ,well done1 good and faithful servant3 because thou hast been faithful over a few things1 ,i will place thee over many things4 ,enter thou into the joy of thy lord4 #be3bd4 ,but he that had received the one talent1 came and said3 ,lord1 ,i know that thou art a hard man2 thou reapest where thou hast not sown and gatherest where thou hast not strewed4 #be3be4 ,and being afraid1 ,i went and hid thy talent in the earth4 ,behold here thou hast that which is thine4 #be3bf4 ,and his lord answering1 said to him3 ,wicked and slothful servant1 thou knewest that ,i reap where ,i sow not and gather where ,i have not strewed4 #be3bg4 ,thou oughtest therefore to have committed my money to the bankers3 and at my coming ,i should have received my own with usury4 #be3bh4 ,take ye away therefore the talent from him and give it him that hath ten talents4 #be3bi4 ,for to every one that hath shall be given1 and he shall abound3 but from him that hath not1 that also which he seemeth to have shall be taken away4 #be3cj4 ,and the unprofitable servant1 cast ye out into the exterior darkness4 ,there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth4 #be3ca4 ,and when the ,son of man shall come in his majesty1 and all the angels with him1 then shall he sit upon the seat of his majesty4 #be3cb4 ,and all nations shall be gathered together before him3 and he shall separate them one from another1 as the shepherd separateth the sheep from the goats3 #be3cc4 ,and he shall set the sheep on his right hand1 but the goats on his left4 #be3cd4 ,then shall the king say to them that shall be on his right hand3 ,come1 ye blessed of my ,father1 possess you the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world4 #be3ce4 ,for ,i was hungry1 and you gave me to eat3 ,i was thirsty1 and you gave me to drink3 ,i was a stranger1 and you took me in3 #be3cf4 ,naked1 and you covered me3 sick1 and you visited me3 ,i was in prison1 and you came to me4 #be3cg4 ,then shall the just answer him1 saying3 ,lord1 when did we see thee hungry and fed thee3 thirsty and gave thee drink8 #be3ch4 ,or when did we see thee a stranger and took thee in8 ,or naked and covered thee8 #be3ci4 ,or when did we see thee sick or in prison and came to thee8 #be3dj4 ,and the king answering shall say to them3 ,amen ,i say to you1 as long as you did it to one of these my least brethren1 you did it to me4 #be3da4 ,then he shall say to them also that shall be on his left hand3 ,depart from me1 you cursed1 into everlasting fire1 which was prepared for the devil and his angels4 #be3db4 ,for ,i was hungry and you gave me not to eat3 ,i was thirsty and you gave me not to drink4 #be3dc4 ,i was a stranger and you took me not in3 naked and you covered me not3 sick and in prison and you did not visit me4 #be3dd4 ,then they also shall answer him1 saying3 ,lord1 when did we see thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison and did not minister to thee8 #be3de4 ,then he shall answer them1 saying3 ,amen3 ,i say to you1 as long as you did it not to one of these least1 neither did you do it to me4 #be3df4 ,and these shall go into everlasting punishment3 but the just1 into life everlasting4 ,matthew ,chapter #bf ,the ,jews conspire against ,christ4 ,he is anointed by ,mary4 ,the treason of ,judas4 ,the last supper4 ,the prayer in the garden4 ,the apprehension of our ,lord4 ,his treatment in the house of ,caiphas4 #bf3a4 ,and it came to pass1 when ,jesus had ended all these words1 he said to his disciples3 #bf3b4 ,you know that after two days shall be the pasch3 and the ,son of man shall be delivered up to be crucified4 #bf3c4 ,then were gathered together the chief priests and ancients of the people1 into the court of the high priest1 who was called ,caiphas3 #bf3d4 ,and they consulted together that by subtilty they might apprehend ,jesus and put him to death4 #bf3e4 ,but they said3 ,not on the festival day1 lest perhaps there should be a tumult among the people4 #bf3f4 ,and when ,jesus was in ,bethania1 in the house of ,simon the leper1 #bf3g4 ,there came to him a woman having an alabaster box of precious ointment and poured it on his head as he was at table4 #bf3h4 ,and the disciples seeing it had indignation1 saying3 ,to what purpose is this waste8 #bf3i4 ,for this might have been sold for much and given to the poor4 #bf3aj4 ,and ,jesus knowing it1 said to them3 ,why do you trouble this woman8 ,for she hath wrought a good work upon me4 #bf3aa4 ,for the poor you have always with you3 but me you have not always4 ,me you have not always444 ,viz41 in a visible manner1 as when conversant here on earth2 and as we have the poor1 whom we may daily assist and relieve4 #bf3ab4 ,for she in pouring this ointment on my body hath done it for my burial4 #bf3ac4 ,amen ,i say to you1 wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world1 that also which she hath done shall be told for a memory of her4 #bf3ad4 ,then went one of the twelve1 who was called ,judas ,iscariot1 to the chief priests4 #bf3ae4 ,and said to them3 ,what will you give me1 and ,i will deliver him unto you8 ,but they appointed him thirty pieces of silver4 #bf3af4 ,and from thenceforth he sought opportunity to betray him4 #bf3ag4 ,and on the first day of the ,azymes1 the disciples came to ,jesus1 saying3 ,where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the pasch8 ,azymes444 ,feast of the unleavened bread4 ,pasch444 ,the paschal lamb4 #bf3ah4 ,but ,jesus said3 ,go ye into the city to a certain man and say to him3 ,the master saith1 ,my time is near at hand4 ,with thee ,i make the pasch with my disciples4 #bf3ai4 ,and the disciples did as ,jesus appointed to them3 and they prepared the pasch4 #bf3bj4 ,but when it was evening1 he sat down with his twelve disciples4 #bf3ba4 ,and whilst they were eating1 he said3 ,amen ,i say to you that one of you is about to betray me4 #bf3bb4 ,and they being very much troubled began every one to say3 ,is it ,i1 ,lord8 #bf3bc4 ,but he answering said3 ,he that dippeth his hand with me in the dish1 he shall betray me4 #bf3bd4 ,the ,son of man indeed goeth1 as it is written of him4 ,but woe to that man by whom the ,son of man shall be betrayed4 ,it were better for him1 if that man had not been born4 #bf3be4 ,and ,judas that betrayed him answering1 said3 ,is it ,i1 ,rabbi8 ,he saith to him3 ,thou hast said it4 #bf3bf4 ,and whilst they were at supper1 ,jesus took bread and blessed and broke and gave to his disciples and said3 ,take ye and eat4 ,this is my body4 ,this is my body444 ,he does not say1 ,this is the figure of my body--but ,this is my body4 7#b ,council of ,nice1 ,act4 #f47 ,neither does he say in this1 or with this is my body2 but absolutely1 ,this is my body3 which plainly implies transubstantiation4 #bf3bg4 ,and taking the chalice1 he gave thanks and gave to them1 saying3 ,drink ye all of this4 ,drink ye all of this444 ,this was spoken to the twelve apostles2 who were the all then present2 and they all drank of it1 says ,st4 ,mark #ad4 #bc4 ,but it no ways follows from these words spoken to the apostles1 that all the faithful are here commanded to drink of the chalice2 any more than that all the faithful are commanded to consecrate1 offer and administer this sacrament2 because ,christ upon this same occasion1 and at the same time1 bid the apostles do so2 in these words1 ,st4 ,luke #bb4 #ai1 ,do this for a commemoration of me4 #bf3bh4 ,for this is my blood of the new testament1 which shall be shed for many unto remission of sins4 ,blood of the new testament444 ,as the old testament was dedicated with the blood of victims1 by ,moses1 in these words3 ,this is the blood of the testament1 etc41 ,heb4 #i4 #bj2 so here is the dedication and institution of the new testament1 in the blood of ,christ1 here mystically shed by these words3 ,this is the blood of the new testament1 etc4 #bf3bi4 ,and ,i say to you1 ,i will not drink from henceforth of this fruit of the vine until that day when ,i shall drink it with you new in the kingdom of my ,father4 ,fruit of the vine444 ,these words1 by the account of ,st4 ,luke #bf3bb4 #ah1 were not spoken of the sacramental cup1 but of the wine that was drunk with the paschal lamb4 ,though the sacramental cup might also be called the fruit of the vine1 because it was consecrated from wine1 and retains the likeness1 and all the accidents or qualities of wine4 #bf3cj4 ,and a hymn being said1 they went out unto mount ,olivet4 #bf3ca4 ,then ,jesus saith to them3 ,all you shall be scandalized in me this night4 ,for it is written3 ,i will strike the shepherd3 and the sheep of the flock shall be dispersed4 ,scandalized in me1 etc444 ,forasmuch as my being apprehended shall make you all run away and forsake me4 #bf3cb4 ,but after ,i shall be risen again1 ,i will go before you into ,galilee4 #bf3cc4 ,and ,peter answering1 said to him3 ,although all shall be scandalized in thee1 ,i will never be scandalized4 #bf3cd4 ,jesus said to him3 ,amen ,i say to thee that in this night before the cock crow1 thou wilt deny me thrice4 #bf3ce4 ,peter saith to him3 ,yea1 though ,i should die with thee1 ,i will not deny thee4 ,and in like manner said all the disciples4 #bf3cf4 ,then ,jesus came with them into a country place which is called ,gethsemani4 ,and he said to his disciples3 ,sit you here1 till ,i go yonder and pray4 #bf3cg4 ,and taking with him ,peter and the two sons of ,zebedee1 he began to grow sorrowful and to be sad4 #bf3ch4 ,then he saith to them3 ,my soul is sorrowful even unto death4 ,stay you here and watch with me4 #bf3ci4 ,and going a little further1 he fell upon his face1 praying and saying3 ,my ,father1 if it be possible1 let this chalice pass from me4 ,nevertheless1 not as ,i will but as thou wilt4 #bf3dj4 ,and he cometh to his disciples and findeth them asleep4 ,and he saith to ,peter3 ,what8 ,could you not watch one hour with me8 #bf3da4 ,watch ye3 and pray that ye enter not into temptation4 ,the spirit indeed is willing1 but the flesh is weak4 #bf3db4 ,again the second time1 he went and prayed1 saying3 ,my ,father1 if this chalice may not pass away1 but ,i must drink it1 thy will be done4 #bf3dc4 ,and he cometh again and findeth them sleeping3 for their eyes were heavy4 #bf3dd4 ,and leaving them1 he went again3 and he prayed the third time1 saying the selfsame word4 #bf3de4 ,then he cometh to his disciples and said to them3 ,sleep ye now and take your rest4 ,behold the hour is at hand3 and the ,son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of sinners4 #bf3df4 ,rise3 let us go4 ,behold he is at hand that will betray me4 #bf3dg4 ,as he yet spoke1 behold ,judas1 one of the twelve1 came1 and with him a great multitude with swords and clubs1 sent from the chief priests and the ancients of the people4 #bf3dh4 ,and he that betrayed him gave them a sign1 saying3 ,whomsoever ,i shall kiss1 that is he4 ,hold him fast4 #bf3di4 ,and forthwith coming to ,jesus1 he said3 ,hail1 ,rabbi4 ,and he kissed him4 #bf3ej4 ,and ,jesus said to him3 ,friend1 whereto art thou come8 ,then they came up and laid hands on ,jesus and held him4 #bf3ea4 ,and behold one of them that were with ,jesus1 stretching forth his hand1 drew out his sword3 and striking the servant of the high priest1 cut off his ear4 #bf3eb4 ,then ,jesus saith to him3 ,put up again thy sword into its place3 for all that take the sword shall perish with the sword4 #bf3ec4 ,thinkest thou that ,i cannot ask my ,father1 and he will give me presently more than twelve legions of angels8 #bf3ed4 ,how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled1 that so it must be done8 #bf3ee4 ,in that same hour1 ,jesus said to the multitudes3 ,you are come out1 as it were to a robber1 with swords and clubs to apprehend me4 ,i sat daily with you1 teaching in the temple3 and you laid not hands on me4 #bf3ef4 ,now all this was done that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled4 ,then the disciples1 all leaving him1 fled4 #bf3eg4 ,but they holding ,jesus led him to ,caiphas the high priest1 where the scribes and the ancients were assembled4 #bf3eh4 ,and ,peter followed him afar off1 even to the court of the high priest1 ,and going in1 he sat with the servants1 that he might see the end4 #bf3ei4 ,and the chief priests and the whole council sought false witness against ,jesus1 that they might put him to death4 #bf3fj4 ,and they found not1 whereas many false witnesses had come in4 ,and last of all there came two false witnesses3 #bf3fa4 ,and they said3 ,this man said1 ,i am able to destroy the temple of ,god and after three days to rebuild it4 #bf3fb4 ,and the high priest rising up1 said to him3 ,answerest thou nothing to the things which these witness against thee8 #bf3fc4 ,but ,jesus held his peace4 ,and the high priest said to him3 ,i adjure thee by the living ,god1 that thou tell us if thou be the ,christ the ,son of ,god4 #bf3fd4 ,jesus saith to him3 ,thou hast said it4 ,nevertheless ,i say to you1 hereafter you shall see the ,son of man sitting on the right hand of the power of ,god and coming in the clouds of heaven4 #bf3fe4 ,then the high priest rent his garments1 saying3 ,he hath blasphemed3 ,what further need have we of witnesses8 ,behold1 now you have heard the blasphemy4 #bf3ff4 ,what think you8 ,but they answering1 said3 ,he is guilty of death4 #bf3fg4 ,then did they spit in his face and buffeted him4 ,and others struck his face with the palms of their hands1 #bf3fh4 ,saying3 ,prophesy unto us1 ,o ,christ4 ,who is he that struck thee8 #bf3fi4 ,but ,peter sat without in the court4 ,and there came to him a servant maid1 saying3 ,thou also wast with ,jesus the ,galilean4 #bf3gj4 ,but he denied before them all1 saying3 ,i know not what thou sayest4 #bf3ga4 ,and as he went out of the gate1 another maid saw him2 and she saith to them that were there3 ,this man also was with ,jesus of ,nazareth4 #bf3gb4 ,and again he denied with an oath3 ,i know not the man4 #bf3gc4 ,and after a little while1 they came that stood by and said to ,peter3 ,surely thou also art one of them4 ,for even thy speech doth discover thee4 #bf3gd4 ,then he began to curse and to swear that he knew not the man4 ,and immediately the cock crew4 #bf3ge4 ,and ,peter remembered the word of ,jesus which he had said3 ,before the cock crow1 thou wilt deny me thrice4 ,and going forth1 he wept bitterly4 ,matthew ,chapter #bg ,the continuation of the history of the passion of ,christ4 ,his death and burial4 #bg3a4 ,and when morning was come1 all the chief priests and ancients of the people took counsel against ,jesus1 that they might put him to death4 #bg3b4 ,and they brought him bound and delivered him to ,pontius ,pilate the governor4 #bg3c4 ,then ,judas1 who betrayed him1 seeing that he was condemned1 repenting himself1 brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and ancients1 #bg3d4 ,saying3 ,i have sinned in betraying innocent blood4 ,but they said3 ,what is that to us8 ,look thou to it4 #bg3e4 ,and casting down the pieces of silver in the temple1 he departed and went and hanged himself with an halter4 #bg3f4 ,but the chief priests having taken the pieces of silver1 said3 ,it is not lawful to put them into the corbona1 because it is the price of blood4 ,corbona444 ,a place in the temple where the people put in their gifts or offerings4 #bg3g4 ,and after they had consulted together1 they bought with them the potter's field1 to be a burying place for strangers4 #bg3h4 ,for this cause that field was called ,haceldama1 that is1 the field of blood1 even to this day4 #bg3i4 ,then was fulfilled that which was spoken by ,jeremias the prophet1 saying3 ,and they took the thirty pieces of silver1 the price of him that was prized1 whom they prized of the children of ,israel4 #bg3aj4 ,and they gave them unto the potter's field1 as the ,lord appointed to me4 #bg3aa4 ,and ,jesus stood before the governor1 and the governor asked him1 saying3 ,art thou the king of the ,jews8 ,jesus saith to him3 ,thou sayest it4 #bg3ab4 ,and when he was accused by the chief priests and ancients1 he answered nothing4 #bg3ac4 ,then ,pilate saith to him3 ,dost not thou hear how great testimonies they allege against thee8 #bg3ad4 ,and he answered him to never a word1 so that the governor wondered exceedingly4 #bg3ae4 ,now upon the solemn day the governor was accustomed to release to the people one prisoner1 whom they would4 #bg3af4 ,and he had then a notorious prisoner that was called ,barabbas4 #bg3ag4 ,they therefore being gathered together1 ,pilate said3 ,whom will you that ,i release to ,you3 ,barabbas1 or ,jesus that is called ,christ8 #bg3ah4 ,for he knew that for envy they had delivered him4 #bg3ai4 ,and as he was sitting in the place of judgment1 his wife sent to him1 saying3 ,have thou nothing to do with that just man2 for ,i have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him4 #bg3bj4 ,but the chief priests and ancients persuaded the people that they should ask ,barabbas and make ,jesus away4 #bg3ba4 ,and the governor answering1 said to them3 ,whether will you of the two to be released unto you8 ,but they said3 ,barabbas4 #bg3bb4 ,pilate saith to them3 ,what shall ,i do then with ,jesus that is called ,christ8 ,they say all3 ,let him be crucified4 #bg3bc4 ,the governor said to them3 ,why1 what evil hath he done8 ,but they cried out the more1 saying3 ,let him be crucified4 #bg3bd4 ,and ,pilate seeing that he prevailed nothing1 but that rather a tumult was made1 taking water washed his hands before the people1 saying3 ,i am innocent of the blood of this just man4 ,look you to it4 #bg3be4 ,and the whole people answering1 said3 ,his blood be upon us and upon our children4 #bg3bf4 ,then he released to them ,barabbas3 and having scourged ,jesus1 delivered him unto them to be crucified4 #bg3bg4 ,then the soldiers of the governor1 taking ,jesus into the hall1 gathered together unto him the whole band4 #bg3bh4 ,and stripping him1 they put a scarlet cloak about him4 #bg3bi4 ,and platting a crown of thorns1 they put it upon his head1 and a reed in his right hand4 ,and bowing the knee before him1 they mocked him1 saying3 ,hail1 ,king of the ,jews4 #bg3cj4 ,and spitting upon him1 they took the reed and struck his head4 #bg3ca4 ,and after they had mocked him1 they took off the cloak from him and put on him his own garments and led him away to crucify him4 #bg3cb4 ,and going out1 they found a man of ,cyrene1 named ,simon3 him they forced to take up his cross4 #bg3cc4 ,and they came to the place that is called ,golgotha1 which is the place of ,calvary4 #bg3cd4 ,and they gave him wine to drink mingled with gall4 ,and when he had tasted1 he would not drink4 #bg3ce4 ,and after they had crucified him1 they divided his garments1 casting lots2 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet1 saying3 ,they divided my garments among them2 and upon my vesture they cast lots4 #bg3cf4 ,and they sat and watched him4 #bg3cg4 ,and they put over his head his cause written3 ,,this ,,is ,,jesus ,,the ,,king ,,of ,,the ,,jews4 #bg3ch4 ,then were crucified with him two thieves3 one on the right hand and one on the left4 #bg3ci4 ,and they that passed by blasphemed him1 wagging their heads1 #bg3dj4 ,and saying3 ,vah1 thou that destroyest the temple of ,god and in three days dost rebuild it3 save thy own self4 ,if thou be the ,son of ,god1 come down from the cross4 #bg3da4 ,in like manner also the chief priests1 with the scribes and ancients1 mocking said3 #bg3db4 ,he saved others3 himself he cannot save4 ,if he be the king of ,israel1 let him now come down from the cross3 and we will believe him4 #bg3dc4 ,he trusted in ,god3 let him now deliver him if he will have him4 ,for he said3 ,i am the ,son of ,god4 #bg3dd4 ,and the selfsame thing the thieves also that were crucified with him reproached him with4 #bg3de4 ,now from the sixth hour1 there was darkness over the whole earth1 until the ninth hour4 #bg3df4 ,and about the ninth hour1 ,jesus cried with a loud voice1 saying3 ,eli1 ,eli1 lamma sabacthani8 ,that is1 ,my ,god1 ,my ,god1 why hast thou forsaken me8 #bg3dg4 ,and some that stood there and heard said3 ,this man calleth ,elias4 #bg3dh4 ,and immediately one of them running took a sponge and filled it with vinegar and put it on a reed and gave him to drink4 #bg3di4 ,and the others said3 ,let be4 ,let us see whether ,elias will come to deliver him4 #bg3ej4 ,and ,jesus again crying with a loud voice1 yielded up the ghost4 #bg3ea4 ,and behold the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top even to the bottom3 and the earth quaked and the rocks were rent4 #bg3eb4 ,and the graves were opened3 and many bodies of the saints that had slept arose1 #bg3ec4 ,and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection1 came into the holy city and appeared to many4 #bg3ed4 ,now the centurion and they that were with him watching ,jesus1 having seen the earthquake and the things that were done1 were sore afraid1 saying3 ,indeed this was the ,son of ,god4 #bg3ee4 ,and there were there many women afar off1 who had followed ,jesus from ,galilee1 ministering unto him3 #bg3ef4 ,among whom was ,mary ,magdalen and ,mary the mother of ,james and ,joseph and the mother of the sons of ,zebedee4 #bg3eg4 ,and when it was evening1 there came a certain rich man of ,arimathea1 named ,joseph1 who also himself was a disciple of ,jesus4 #bg3eh4 ,he went to ,pilate and asked the body of ,jesus4 ,then ,pilate commanded that the body should be delivered4 #bg3ei4 ,and ,joseph taking the body wrapped it up in a clean linen cloth3 #bg3fj4 ,and laid it in his own new monument1 which he had hewed out in a rock4 ,and he rolled a great stone to the door of the monument and went his way4 #bg3fa4 ,and there was there ,mary ,magdalen and the other ,mary1 sitting over against the sepulchre4 #bg3fb4 ,and the next day1 which followed the day of preparation1 the chief priests and the ,pharisees came together to ,pilate1 ,the day of preparation444 ,the eve of the sabbath2 so called1 because on that day they prepared all things necessary2 not being allowed so much as to dress their meat on the sabbath day4 #bg3fc4 ,saying3 ,sir1 we have remembered1 that that seducer said1 while he was yet alive3 ,after three days ,i will rise again4 #bg3fd4 ,command therefore the sepulchre to be guarded until the third day3 lest perhaps his disciples come and steal him away and say to the people3 ,he is risen from the dead4 ,and the last error shall be worse than the first4 #bg3fe4 ,pilate saith to them3 ,you have a guard4 ,go1 guard it as you know4 #bg3ff4 ,and they departing1 made the sepulchre sure1 sealing the stone and setting guards4 ,matthew ,chapter #bh ,the resurrection of ,christ4 ,his commission to his disciples4 #bh3a4 ,and in the end of the sabbath1 when it began to dawn towards the first day of the week1 came ,mary ,magdalen and the other ,mary1 to see the sepulchre4 #bh3b4 ,and behold there was a great earthquake4 ,for an angel of the ,lord descended from heaven and coming rolled back the stone and sat upon it4 #bh3c4 ,and his countenance was as lightning and his raiment as snow4 #bh3d4 ,and for fear of him1 the guards were struck with terror and became as dead men4 #bh3e4 ,and the angel answering1 said to the women3 ,fear not you3 for ,i know that you seek ,jesus who was crucified4 #bh3f4 ,he is not here4 ,for he is risen1 as he said4 ,come1 and see the place where the ,lord was laid4 #bh3g4 ,and going quickly1 tell ye his disciples that he is risen4 ,and behold he will go before you into ,galilee4 ,there you shall see him4 ,lo1 ,i have foretold it to you4 #bh3h4 ,and they went out quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy1 running to tell his disciples4 #bh3i4 ,and behold1 ,jesus met them1 saying3 ,all hail4 ,but they came up and took hold of his feet and adored him4 #bh3aj4 ,then ,jesus said to them3 ,fear not4 ,go1 tell my brethren that they go into ,galilee4 ,there they shall see me4 #bh3aa4 ,who when they were departed1 behold1 some of the guards came into the city and told the chief priests all things that had been done4 #bh3ab4 ,and they being assembled together with the ancients1 taking counsel1 gave a great sum of money to the soldiers1 #bh3ac4 ,saying3 ,say you1 ,his disciples came by night and stole him away when we were asleep4 #bh3ad4 ,and if the governor shall hear of this1 we will persuade him and secure you4 #bh3ae4 ,so they taking the money1 did as they were taught3 and this word was spread abroad among the ,jews even unto this day4 #bh3af4 ,and the eleven disciples went into ,galilee1 unto the mountain where ,jesus had appointed them4 #bh3ag4 ,and seeing him they adored3 but some doubted4 #bh3ah4 ,and ,jesus coming1 spoke to them1 saying3 ,all power is given to me in heaven and in earth4 ,all power1 etc444 ,see here the warrant and commission of the apostles and their successors1 the bishops and pastors of ,christ's church4 ,he received from his ,father all power in heaven and in earth3 and in virtue of this power1 he sends them 7even as his ,father sent him1 ,st4 ,john #bj4 #ba7 to teach and disciple1 not one1 but all nations2 and instruct them in all truths3 and that he may assist them effectually in the execution of this commission1 he promises to be with them1 not for three or four hundred years only1 but all days1 even to the consummation of the world4 ,how then could the ,catholic ,church ever go astray2 having always with her pastors1 as is here promised1 ,christ himself1 who is the way1 the truth1 and the life4 ,st4 ,john #ad4 #bh3ai4 ,going therefore1 teach ye all nations3 baptizing them in the name of the ,father and of the ,son and of the ,holy ,ghost4 #bh3bj4 ,teaching them to observe all things whatsoever ,i have commanded you4 ,and behold ,i am with you all days1 even to the consummation of the world4
