the kings of ,juda3 and one of those that were first of all carried away into captivity4 ,he was so renowned for wisdom and knowledge1 that it became a proverb among the ,babylonians1 ,,as ,,wise ,,as ,,daniel 7,ezech4 #bh4c74 ,and his holiness was so great from his very childhood1 that at the time when he was as yet but a young man1 he is joined by the ,,spirit of ,,god with ,,noe and ,,job1 as three persons most eminent for virtue and sanctity1 ,ezech4 #ad4 ,he is not commonly numbered by the ,hebrews among ,,the ,,prophets3 because he lived at court1 and in high station in the world3 but and water4 ,their excellence and wisdom4 #a3a4 ,in the third year of the reign of ,joakim1 king of ,juda1 ,nabuchodonosor1 king of ,babylon1 came to ,jerusalem1 and beseiged it4 #a3b4 ,and the ,lord delivered into his hands ,joakim1 the king of ,juda1 and part of the vessels of the house of ,god3 and he carried them away into the land of ,sennaar1 to the house of his god1 and the vessels he brought into the treasure house of his god4 ,his god444 ,bel or ,belus1 the principal idol of the ,chaldeans4 #a3c4 ,and the king spoke to ,asphenez1 the master of the eunuchs1 that he should bring in some of the children of ,israel1 and of the king's seed1 and of the princes1 #a3d4 ,children in whom there was no blemish1 well favoured1 and skilful in all wisdom1 acute in knowledge1 and instructed in science1 and such as might stand in the king's palace1 that he might teach them the learning1 and tongue of the ,chaldeans4 #a3e4 ,and the king appointed them a daily provision1 of his own meat1 and of the wine of which he drank himself1 that being nourished three years1 afterwards they might stand before the king4 #a3f4 ,now there was among them of the children of ,juda1 ,daniel1 ,ananias1 ,misael1 and ,azarias4 #a3g4 ,and the master of the eunuchs gave them names3 to ,daniel1 ,baltassar3 to ,ananias1 ,sidrach3 to ,misael1 ,misach3 and to ,azarias1 ,abdenago4 #a3h4 ,but ,daniel purposed in his heart that he would not be defiled with the king's table1 nor with the wine which he drank3 and he requested the master of the eunuchs that he might not be defiled4 ,be defiled1 etc444 ,viz41 either by eating meat forbidden by the law1 or which had before been offered to idols4 #a3i4 ,and ,god gave to ,daniel grace and mercy in the sight of the prince of the eunuchs4 #a3aj4 ,and the prince of the eunuchs said to ,daniel3 ,i fear my lord1 the king1 who hath appointed you meat and drink3 who if he should see your faces leaner than those of the other youths1 your equals1 you shall endanger my head to the king4 #a3aa4 ,and ,daniel said to ,malasar1 whom the prince of the eunuchs had appointed over ,daniel1 ,ananias1 ,misael1 and ,azarias3 #a3ab4 ,try1 ,i beseech thee1 thy servants for ten days1 and let pulse be given us to eat1 and water to drink3 ,pulse444 ,that is1 pease1 beans1 and such like4 #a3ac4 ,and look upon our faces1 and the faces of the children that eat of the king's meat3 and as thou shalt see1 deal with thy servants4 #a3ad4 ,and when he had heard these words1 he tried them for ten days4 #a3ae4 ,and after ten days1 their faces appeared fairer and fatter than all the children that ate of the king's meat4 #a3af4 ,so ,malasar took their portions1 and the wine that they should drink3 and he gave them pulse4 #a3ag4 ,and to these children ,god gave knowledge1 and understanding in every book1 and wisdom3 but to ,daniel the understanding also of all visions and dreams4 #a3ah4 ,and when the days were ended1 after which the king had ordered they should be brought in3 the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before ,nabuchodonosor4 #a3ai4 ,and when the king had spoken to them1 there were not found among them all such as ,daniel1 ,ananias1 ,misael1 and ,azarias3 and they stood in the king's presence4 #a3bj4 ,and in all matters of wisdom and understanding1 that the king enquired of them1 he found them ten times better than all the diviners1 and wise men1 that were in all his kingdom4 #a3ba4 ,and ,daniel continued even to the first year of king ,cyrus4 ,daniel ,chapter #b ,daniel1 by divine revelation1 declares the dream of ,nabuchodonosor1 and the interpretation of it4 ,he is highly honoured by the king4 #b3a4 ,in the second year of the reign of ,nabuchodonosor1 ,nabuchodonosor had a dream1 and his spirit was terrified1 and his dream went out of his mind4 ,the second year444 ,viz41 from the death of his father ,nabopolassar2 for he had reigned before as partner with his father in the empire4 #b3b4 ,then the king commanded to call together the diviners and the wise men1 and the magicians1 and the ,chaldeans3 to declare to the king his dreams3 so they came and stood before the king4 ,the ,chaldeeans444 ,that is1 the astrologers1 that pretended to divine by stars4 #b3c4 ,and the king said to them3 ,i saw a dream3 and being troubled in mind ,i know not what ,i saw4 #b3d4 ,and the ,chaldeans answered the king in ,syriac3 ,o king1 live for ever3 tell to thy servants thy dream1 and we will declare the interpretation thereof4 #b3e4 ,and the king1 answering1 said to the ,chaldeans3 ,the thing is gone out of my mind3 unless you tell me the dream1 and the meaning thereof1 you shall be put to death1 and your houses shall be confiscated4 #b3f4 but if you tell the dream1 and the meaning of it1 you shall receive of me rewards1 and gifts1 and great honour3 therefore1 tell me the dream1 and the interpretation thereof4 #b3g4 ,they answered again and said3 ,let the king tell his servants the dream1 and we will declare the interpretation of it4 #b3h4 ,the king answered and said3 ,i know for certain1 that you seek to gain time1 since you know that the thing is gone from me4 #b3i4 ,if1 therefore1 you tell me not the dream1 there is one sentence concerning you1 that you have also framed a lying interpretation1 and full of deceit1 to speak before me till the time pass away4 ,tell me1 therefore1 the dream1 that ,i may know that you also give a true interpretation thereof4 #b3aj4 ,then the ,chaldeans answered before the king1 and said3 ,there is no man upon earth1 that can accomplish thy word1 ,o king2 neither doth any king1 though great and mighty1 ask such a thing of any diviner1 or wise man1 or ,chaldean4 #b3aa4 ,for the thing that thou asketh1 ,o king1 is difficult3 nor can any one be found that can shew it before the king1 except the gods1 whose conversation is not with men4 #b3ab4 ,upon hearing this1 the king in fury1 and in great wrath1 commanded that all the wise men of ,babylon should be put to death4 #b3ac4 ,and the decree being gone forth1 the wise men were slain3 and ,daniel and his companions were sought for1 to be put to death4 #b3ad4 ,then ,daniel inquired concerning the law and the sentence1 of ,arioch1 the general of the king's army1 who was gone forth to kill the wise men of ,babylon4 #b3ae4 ,and he asked him that had received the orders of the king1 why so cruel a sentence was gone forth from the face of the king4 ,and when ,arioch had told the matter to ,daniel1 #b3af4 ,daniel went in1 and desired of the king1 that he would give him time to resolve the question1 and declare it to the king4 #b3ag4 ,and he went into his house1 and told the matter to ,ananias1 and ,misael1 and ,azarias1 his companions3 #b3ah4 ,to the end that they should ask mercy at the face of the ,god of heaven1 concerning this secret1 and that ,daniel and his companions might not perish with the rest of the wise men of ,babylon4 #b3ai4 ,then was the mystery revealed to ,daniel by a vision in the night3 and ,daniel blessed the ,god of heaven1 #b3bj4 ,and speaking1 he said3 ,blessed be the name of the ,lord from eternity and for evermore3 for wisdom and fortitude are his4 #b3ba4 ,and he changeth times and ages3 taketh away kingdoms1 and establisheth them3 giveth wisdom to the wise1 and knowledge to them that have understanding3 #b3bb4 ,he revealeth deep and hidden things1 and knoweth what is in darkness3 and light is with him4 #b3bc4 ,to thee1 ,o ,god of our fathers1 ,i give thanks1 and ,i praise thee3 because thou hast given me wisdom and strength3 and now thou hast shewn me what we desired of thee1 for thou hast made known to us the king's discourse4 #b3bd4 ,after this ,daniel went in to ,arioch1 to whom the king had given orders to destroy the wise men of ,babylon1 and he spoke thus to him3 ,destroy not the wise men of ,babylon3 bring me in before the king1 and ,i will tell the solution to the king4 #b3be4 ,then ,arioch in haste brought in ,daniel to the king1 and said to him3 ,i have found a man of the children of the captivity of ,juda1 that will resolve the question to the king4 #b3bf4 ,the king answered1 and said to ,daniel1 whose name was ,baltassar3 ,thinkest thou indeed that thou canst tell me the dream that ,i saw1 and the interpretation thereof8 #b3bg4 ,and ,daniel made answer before the king1 and said3 ,the secret that the king desireth to know1 none of the wise men1 or the philosophers1 or the diviners1 or the soothsayers1 can declare to the king4 #b3bh4 ,but there is a ,god in heaven that revealeth mysteries1 who hath shewn to thee1 ,o king ,nabuchodonosor1 what is to come to pass in the latter times4 ,thy dream1 and the visions of thy head upon thy bed1 are these3 #b3bi4 ,thou1 ,o king1 didst begin to think in thy bed1 what should come to pass hereafter3 and he that revealeth mysteries shewed thee what shall come to pass4 #b3cj4 ,to me also this secret is revealed1 not by any wisdom that ,i have more than all men alive3 but that the interpretation might be made manifest to the king1 and thou mightest know the thought of thy mind4 #b3ca4 ,thou1 ,o king1 sawest1 and behold there was as it were a great statue3 this statue1 which was great and high1 tall of stature1 stood before thee1 and the look thereof was terrible4 #b3cb4 ,the head of this statue was of fine gold1 but the breast and the arms of silver1 and the belly and the thighs of brass4 #b3cc4 ,and the legs of iron1 the feet part of iron and part of clay4 #b3cd4 ,thus thou sawest1 till a stone was cut out of a mountain without hands3 and it struck the statue upon the feet thereof that were of iron and clay1 and broke them in pieces4 #b3ce4 ,then was the iron1 the clay1 the brass1 the silver1 and the gold broken to pieces together1 and became like the chaff of a summer's threshing floor1 and they were carried away by the wind3 and there was no place found for them3 but the stone that struck the statue became a great mountain1 and filled the whole earth4 #b3cf4 ,this is the dream3 we will also tell the interpretation thereof before thee1 ,o king4 #b3cg4 ,thou art a king of kings3 and the ,god of heaven hath given thee a kingdom1 and strength1 and power1 and glory3 #b3ch4 ,and all places wherein the children of men1 and the beasts of the field do dwell3 he hath also given the birds of the air into thy hand1 and hath put all things under thy power3 thou1 therefore1 art the head of gold4 #b3ci4 ,and after thee shall rise up another kingdom1 inferior to thee1 of silver3 and another third kingdom of brass1 which shall rule over all the world4 ,another kingdom444 ,viz41 that of the ,medes and ,persians4 ,ibid4 ,third kingdom444 ,viz41 that of ,alexander the ,great4 #b3dj4 ,and the fourth kingdom shall be as iron4 ,as iron breaketh into pieces1 and subdueth all things1 so shall that break1 and destroy all these4 ,the fourth kingdom1 etc444 ,some understand this of the successors of ,alexander1 the kings of ,syria and ,egypt1 others of the ,roman empire1 and its civil wars4 #b3da4 ,and whereas thou sawest the feet1 and the toes1 part of potter's clay1 and part of iron3 the kingdom shall be divided1 but yet it shall take its origin from the iron1 according as thou sawest the iron mixed with the miry clay4 #b3db4 ,and as the toes of the feet were part of iron1 and part of clay3 the kingdom shall be partly strong1 and partly broken4 #b3dc4 ,and whereas thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay1 they shall be mingled indeed together with the seed of man1 but they shall not stick fast one to another1 as iron cannot be mixed with clay4 #b3dd4 ,but in the days of those kingdoms1 the ,god of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never by destroyed1 and his kingdom shall not be delivered up to another people3 and it shall break in pieces1 and shall consume all these kingdoms3 and itself shall stand for ever4 ,a kingdom444 ,viz41 the kingdom of ,christ in the ,catholic ,church which cannot be destroyed4 #b3de4 ,according as thou sawest1 that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands1 and broke in pieces the clay and the iron1 and the brass1 and the silver1 and the gold1 the great ,god hath shewn the king what shall come to pass hereafter1 and the dream is true1 and the interpretation thereof is faithful4 #b3df4 ,then king ,nabuchodonosor fell on his face1 and worshipped ,daniel1 and commanded that they should offer in sacrifice to him victims and incense4 #b3dg4 ,and the king spoke to ,daniel1 and said3 ,verily1 your ,god is the ,god of gods1 and ,lord of kings1 and a revealer of hidden things3 seeing thou couldst discover this secret4 #b3dh4 ,then the king advanced ,daniel to a high station1 and gave him many and great gifts3 and he made him governor over all the provinces of ,babylon3 and chief of the magistrates over all the wise men of ,babylon4 #b3di4 ,and ,daniel requested of the king1 and he appointed ,sidrach1 ,misach1 and ,abdenago1 over the works of the province of ,babylon3 but ,daniel himself was in the king's palace4 ,daniel ,chapter #c ,nabuchodonosor set up a golden statue2 which he commands all to adore3 the three children for refusing to do it are cast into the fiery furnace2 but are not hurt by the flames4 ,their prayer and canticle of praise4 #c3a4 ,king ,nabuchodonosor made a statue of gold1 of sixty cubits high1 and six cubits broad1 and he set it up in the plain of ,dura1 of the province of ,babylon4 #c3b4 ,then ,nabuchodonosor1 the king1 sent to call together the nobles1 the magistrates1 and the judges1 the captains1 the rulers1 and governors1 and all the chief men of the provinces1 to come to the dedication of the statue which king ,nabuchodonosor had set up4 #c3c4 ,then the nobles1 the magistrates1 and the judges1 the captains1 and rulers1 and the great men that were placed in authority1 and all the princes of the provinces1 were gathered together to come to the dedication of the statue1 which king ,nabuchodonosor had set up4 ,and they stood before the statue which king ,nabuchodonosor had set up4 #c3d4 ,then a herald cried with a strong voice3 ,to you it is commanded1 ,o nations1 tribes and languages3 #c3e4 ,that in the hour that you shall hear the sound of the trumpet1 and of the flute1 and of the harp1 of the sackbut1 and of the psaltery1 and of the symphony1 and of all kind of music1 ye fall down and adore the golden statue which king ,nabuchodonosor hath set up4 #c3f4 ,but if any man shall not fall down and adore1 he shall the same hour be cast into a furnace of burning fire4 #c3g4 ,upon this1 therefore1 at the time when all the people heard the sound of the trumpet1 the flute1 and the harp1 of the sackbut1 and the psaltery1 of the symphony1 and of all kind of music1 all the nations1 tribes1 and languages fell down and adored the golden statue which king ,nabuchodonosor had set up4 #c3h4 ,and presently at that very time some ,chaldeans came and accused the ,jews1 #c3i4 ,and said to king ,nabuchodonosor3 ,o king1 live for ever3 #c3aj4 ,thou1 ,o king1 hast made a decree1 that every man that shall hear the sound of the trumpet1 the flute1 and the harp1 of the sackbut1 and the psaltery1 of the symphony1 and of all kind of music1 shall prostrate himself1 and adore the golden statue3 #c3aa4 ,and that if any man shall not fall down and adore1 he should be cast into a furnace of burning fire4 #c3ab4 ,now there are certain ,jews1 whom thou hast set over the works of the province of ,babylon1 ,sidrach1 ,misach1 and ,abdenago3 these men1 ,o king1 have slighted thy decree3 they worship not thy gods1 nor do they adore the golden statue which thou hast set up4 #c3ac4 ,then ,nabuchodonosor in fury1 and in wrath1 commanded that ,sidrach1 ,misach1 ad ,abdenago should be brought3 who immediately were brought before the king4 #c3ad4 ,and ,nabuchodonosor1 the king1 spoke to them1 and said3 ,is it true1 ,o ,sidrach1 ,misach1 and ,abdenago1 that you do not worship my gods1 nor adore the golden statue that ,i have set up8 #c3ae4 ,now1 therefore1 if you be ready1 at what hour soever1 you shall hear the sound of the trumpet1 flute1 harp1 sackbut1 and psaltery1 and symphony1 and of all kind of music1 prostrate yourselves1 and adore the statue which ,i have made3 but if you do not adore1 you shall be cast the same hour into the furnace of burning fire3 and who is the ,god that shall deliver you out of my hand8 #c3af4 ,sidrach1 ,misach1 and ,abdenago1 answered1 and said to king ,nabuchodonosor3 ,we have no occasion to answer thee concerning this matter4 #c3ag4 ,for behold our ,god1 whom we worship1 is able to save us from the furnace of burning fire1 and to deliver us out of thy hands1 ,o king4 #c3ah4 ,but if he will not1 be it known to thee1 ,o king1 that we will not worship thy gods1 nor adore the golden statue which thou hast set up4 #c3ai4 ,then was ,nabuchodonosor filled with fury3 and the countenance of his face was changed against ,sidrach1 ,misach1 and ,abdenago1 and he commanded that the furnace should be heated seven times more than it had been accustomed to be heated4 #c3bj4 ,and he commanded the strongest men that were in his army1 to bind the feet of ,sidrach1 ,misach1 and ,abdenago1 and to cast them into the furnace of burning fire4 #c3ba4 ,and immediately these men were bound1 and were cast into the furnace of burning fire1 with their coats1 and their caps1 and their shoes1 and their garments4 #c3bb4 ,for the king's commandment was urgent1 and the furnace was heated exceedingly4 ,and the flame of the fire slew those men that had cast in ,sidrach1 ,misach1 and ,abdenago4 #c3bc4 ,but these three men1 that is1 ,sidrach1 ,misach1 and ,abdenago1 fell down bound in the midst of the furnace of burning fire4 #c3bd4 ,and they walked in the midst of the flame1 praising ,god1 and blessing the ,lord4 ,and they walked1 etc444 ,here ,st4 ,jerome takes notice1 that from this verse1 to ver4 #ia1 was not in the ,hebrew in his time4 ,but as it was in all the ,greek ,bibles1 7which were originally translated from the ,hebrew17 it is more than probable that it had been formerly in the ,hebrew or rather in the ,chaldaic1 in which the book of ,daniel was written4 ,but this is certain3 that it is1 and has been of old1 received by the church1 and read as canonical scripture in her liturgy1 and divine offices4 #c3be4 ,then ,azarias standing up1 prayed in this manner1 and opening his mouth in the midst of the fire1 he said3 #c3bf4 ,blessed art thou1 ,o ,lord1 the ,god of our fathers1 and thy name is worthy of praise1 and glorious for ever3 #c3bg4 ,for thou art just in all that thou hast done to us1 and all thy works are true1 and thy ways right1 and all thy judgments true4 #c3bh4 ,for thou hast executed true judgments in all the things that thou hast brought upon us1 and upon ,jerusalem1 the holy city of our fathers3 for according to truth and judgment1 thou hast brought all these things upon us for our sins4 #c3bi4 ,for we have sinned1 and committed iniquity1 departing from thee3 and we have trespassed in all things3 #c3cj4 ,and we have not hearkened to thy commandments1 nor have we observed nor done as thou hadst commanded us1 that it might go well with us4 #c3ca4 ,wherefore1 all that thou hast brought upon us1 and every thing that thou hast done to us1 thou hast done in true judgment3 #c3cb4 ,and thou hast delivered us into the hands of our enemies that are unjust1 and most wicked1 and prevaricators1 and to a king unjust1 and most wicked beyond all that are upon the earth4 #c3cc4 ,and now we cannot open our mouths3 we are become a shame1 and a reproach to thy servants1 and to them that worship thee4 #c3cd4 ,deliver us not up for ever1 we beseech thee1 for thy name's sake1 and abolish not thy covenant4 #c3ce4 ,and take not away thy mercy from us1 for the sake of ,abraham1 thy beloved1 and ,isaac1 thy servant1 and ,israel1 thy holy one3 #c3cf4 ,to whom thou hast spoken1 promising that thou wouldst multiply their seed as the stars of heaven1 and as the sand that is on the sea shore4 #c3cg4 ,for we1 ,o ,lord1 are diminished more than any nation1 and are brought low in all the earth this day for our sins4 #c3ch4 ,neither is there at this time prince1 or leader1 or prophet1 or holocaust1 or sacrifice1 or oblation1 or incense1 or place of first fruits before thee1 #c3ci4 ,that we may find thy mercy3 nevertheless1 in a contrite heart and humble spirit let us be accepted4 #c3dj4 ,as in holocausts of rams1 and bullocks1 and as in thousands of fat lambs3 so let our sacrifice be made in thy sight this day1 that it may please thee3 for there is no confusion to them that trust in thee4 #c3da4 ,and now we follow thee with all our heart1 and we fear thee1 and seek thy face4 #c3db4 ,put us not to confusion1 but deal with us according to thy meekness1 and according to the multitude of thy mercies4 #c3dc4 ,and deliver us1 according to thy wonderful works1 and give glory to thy name1 ,o ,lord3 #c3dd4 ,and let all them be confounded that shew evils to thy servants1 let them be confounded in all thy might1 and let their strength be broken3 #c3de4 ,and let them know that thou art the ,lord1 the only ,god1 and glorious over all the world4 #c3df4 ,now the king's servants that had cast them in1 ceased not to heat the furnace with brimstone and tow1 and pitch1 and dry sticks1 #c3dg4 ,and the flame mounted up above the furnace nine and forty cubits3 #c3dh4 ,and it broke forth1 and burnt such of the ,chaldeans as it found near the furnace4 #c3di4 ,but the angel of the ,lord went down with ,azarias and his companions into the furnace3 and he drove the flame of the fire out of the furnace1 #c3ej4 ,and made the midst of the furnace like the blowing of a wind bringing dew1 and the fire touched them not at all1 nor troubled them1 nor did them any harm4 #c3ea4 ,then these three1 as with one mouth1 praised and glorified and blessed ,god1 in the furnace1 saying3 #c3eb4 ,blessed art thou1 ,o ,lord1 the ,god of our fathers2 and worthy to be praised1 and glorified1 and exalted above all for ever3 and blessed is the holy name of thy glory3 and worthy to be praised and exalted above all1 in all ages4 #c3ec4 ,blessed art thou in the holy temple of thy glory3 and exceedingly to be praised and exalted above all for ever4 #c3ee4 ,blessed art thou that beholdest the depths1 and sittest upon the cherubims3 and worthy to be praised and exalted above all for ever4 #c3ef4 ,blessed art thou in the firmament of heaven3 and worthy of praise1 and glorious for ever4 #c3eg4 ,all ye works of the ,lord1 bless the ,lord3 praise and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3eh4 ,o ye angels of the ,lord1 bless the ,lord3 praise and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3ei4 ,o ye heavens1 bless the ,lord3 praise and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3fj4 ,o all ye waters that are above the heavens1 bless the ,lord3 praise and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3fa4 ,o all ye powers of the ,lord1 bless the ,lord3 praise and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3fb4 ,o ye sun and moon1 bless the ,lord3 praise and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3fc4 ,o ye stars of heaven1 bless the and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3ff4 ,o ye fire and heat1 bless the ,lord3 praise and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3fg4 ,o ye cold and heat1 bless the ,lord1 praise and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3fh4 ,o ye dews and hoar frost1 bless the ,lord3 praise and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3fi4 ,o ye frost and cold1 bless the ,lord3 praise and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3gj4 ,o ye ice and snow1 bless the ,lord3 praise and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3ga4 ,o ye nights and days1 bless the ,lord3 praise and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3gb4 ,o ye light and darkness1 bless the ,lord3 praise and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3gc4 ,o ye lightnings and clouds1 bless the ,lord3 praise and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3gd4 ,o let the earth bless the ,lord3 let it praise and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3gf4 ,o all ye things that spring up in the earth1 bless the ,lord3 praise and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3gg4 ,o ye fountains1 bless the ,lord3 praise and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3gh4 ,o ye seas and rivers1 bless the ,lord3 praise and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3gi4 ,o ye whales1 and all that move in the waters1 bless the ,lord3 praise and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3hj4 ,o all ye fowls of the air1 bless the ,lord3 praise and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3ha4 ,o all ye beasts and cattle1 bless the ,lord3 praise and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3hb4 ,o ye sons of men1 bless the ,lord3 praise and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3hc4 ,o let ,israel bless the ,lord3 let them praise and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3hd4 ,o ye priests of the ,lord1 bless the ,lord3 praise and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3he4 ,o ye servants of the ,lord1 bless the ,lord3 praise and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3hf4 ,o ye spirits and souls of the just1 bless the ,lord3 praise and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3hg4 ,o ye holy and humble of heart1 bless the ,lord3 praise and exalt him above all for ever4 #c3hh4 ,o ,ananias1 ,azarias1 ,misael1 bless ye the ,lord3 praise and exalt him above all for ever4 ,for he hath delivered us from hell1 and saved us out of the hand of death1 and delivered us out of the midst of the burning flame1 and saved us out of the midst of the fire4 #c3hi4 ,o give thanks to the ,lord1 because he is good3 because his mercy endureth for ever and ever4 #c3ij4 ,o all ye religious1 bless the ,lord1 the ,god of gods3 praise him1 and give him thanks1 because his mercy endureth for ever and ever4 #c3ia4 ,then ,nabuchodonosor1 the king1 was astonished1 and rose up in haste1 and said to his nobles3 ,did we not cast three men bound into the midst of the fire8 ,they answered the king1 and said3 ,true1 ,o king4 #c3ib4 ,he answered1 and said3 ,behold1 ,i see four men loose1 and walking in the midst of the fire1 and there is no hurt in them1 and the form of the fourth is like the son of ,god4 #c3ic4 ,then ,nabuchodonosor came to the door of the burning fiery furnace1 and said3 ,sidrach1 ,misach1 and ,abdenago1 ye servants of the most high ,god1 go ye forth1 and come4 ,and immediately ,sidrach1 ,misach1 and ,abdenago1 went out from the midst of the fire4 #c3id4 ,and the nobles1 and the magistrates1 and the judges1 and the great men of the king1 being gathered together1 considered these men1 that the fire had no power on their bodies1 and that not a hair of their head had been singed1 nor their garments altered1 nor the smell of the fire had passed on them4 #c3ie4 ,then ,nabuchodonosor breaking forth1 said3 ,blessed be the ,god of them1 to wit1 of ,sidrach1 ,misach1 and ,abdenago1 who hath sent his angel1 and delivered his servants that believed in him3 and they changed the king's word1 and delivered up their bodies1 that they might not serve nor adore any god except their own ,god4 #c3if4 ,by me1 therefore1 this decree is made3 ,that every people1 tribe1 and tongue1 which shall speak blasphemy against the ,god of ,sidrach1 ,misach1 and ,abdenago1 shall be destroyed1 and their houses laid waste3 for there is no other ,god that can save in this manner4 #c3ig4 ,then the king promoted ,sidrach1 ,misach1 and ,abdenago1 in the province of ,babylon4 #c3ih4 ,nabuchodonosor1 the king1 to all peoples1 nations1 and tongues1 that dwell in all the earth1 peace be multiplied unto you4 ,nabuchodonosor1 etc444 ,these last three verses are a kind of preface to the following chapter1 which is written in the style of an epistle from the king4 #c3ii4 ,the most high ,god hath wrought signs and wonders towards me4 ,it hath seemed good to me1 therefore1 to publish #c3ajj4 ,his signs1 because they are great3 and his wonders1 because they are mighty3 and his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom1 and his power to all generations4 ,daniel ,chapter #d ,nabuchodonosor's dream1 by which the judgments of ,god are denounced against him for his pride1 is interpreted by ,daniel1 and verified by the event4 #d3a4 ,i1 ,nabuchodonosor1 was at rest in my house1 and flourishing in my palace3 #d3b4 ,i saw a dream that affrighted me3 and my thoughts in my bed1 and the visions of my head1 troubled me4 #d3c4 ,then ,i set forth a decree1 that all the wise men of ,babylon should be brought in before me1 and that they should shew me the interpretation of the dream4 #d3d4 ,then came in the diviners1 the wise men1 the ,chaldeans1 and the soothsayers1 and ,i told the dream before them3 but they did not shew me the interpretation thereof4 #d3e4 ,till their colleague1 ,daniel1 came in before me1 whose name is ,baltassar1 according to the name of my god1 who hath in him the spirit of the holy gods3 and ,i told the dream before him4 ,baltassar1 according to the name of my god444 ,he says this1 because the name of ,baltassar1 or ,belteshazzar1 is derived from the name of ,bel1 the chief god of the ,babylonians4 #d3f4 ,baltassar1 prince of the diviners1 because ,i know that thou hast in thee the spirit of the holy gods1 and that no secret is impossible to thee1 tell me the visions of my dreams that ,i have seen1 and the interpretation of them8 #d3g4 ,this was the vision of my head in my bed3 ,i saw1 and behold a tree in the midst of the earth1 and the height thereof was exceeding great4 #d3h4 ,the tree was great and strong1 and the height thereof reached unto heaven3 the sight thereof was even to the ends of all the earth4 #d3i4 ,its leaves were most beautiful1 and its fruit exceeding much3 and in it was food for all3 under it dwelt cattle and beasts1 and in the branches thereof the fowls of the air had their abode3 and all flesh did eat of it4 #d3aj4 ,i saw in the vision of my head upon my bed1 and behold a watcher1 and a holy one came down from heaven4 ,a watcher444 ,a vigilant angel1 perhaps the guardian of ,israel4 #d3aa4 ,he cried aloud1 and said thus3 ,cut down the tree1 and chop off the branches thereof3 shake off its leaves1 and scatter its fruits3 let the beasts fly away that are under it1 and the birds from its branches4 #d3ab4 ,nevertheless1 leave the stump of its roots in the earth1 and let it be tied with a band of iron and of brass1 among the grass1 that is without1 and let it be wet with the dew of heaven1 and let its portion be with the wild beasts in the grass of the earth4 #d3ac4 ,let his heart be changed from man's1 and let a beast's heart be given him3 and let seven times pass over him4 ,let his heart be changed1 etc444 ,it does not appear by scripture that ,nabuchodonosor was changed from human shape2 much less that he was changed into an ox2 but only that he lost his reason1 and became mad2 and in this condition remained abroad in the company of beasts1 eating grass like an ox1 till his hair grew in such manner as to resemble the feathers of eagles1 and his nails to be like birds' claws4 #d3ad4 ,this is the decree by the sentence of the watchers1 and the word and demand of the holy ones3 till the living know1 that the most ,high ruleth in the kingdom of men3 and he will give it to whomsoever it shall please him1 and he will appoint the basest man over it4 #d3ae4 ,i1 king ,nabuchodonosor1 saw this dream3 thou1 therefore1 ,o ,baltassar1 tell me quickly the interpretation3 for all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to declare the meaning of it to me3 but thou art able1 because the spirit of the holy gods is in thee4 #d3af4 ,then ,daniel1 whose name was ,baltassar1 began silently to think within himself for about one hour3 and his thought troubled him4 ,but the king answering1 said3 ,baltassar1 let not the dream and the interpretation thereof trouble thee4 ,baltassar answered1 and said3 ,my lord1 the dream be to them that hate thee1 and the interpretation thereof to thy enemies4 #d3ag4 ,the tree which thou sawest1 which was high and strong1 whose height reached to the skies1 and the sight thereof into all the earth3 #d3ah4 ,and the branches thereof were most beautiful1 and its fruit exceeding much1 and in it was food for all1 under which the beasts of the field dwelt1 and the birds of the air had their abode in its branches4 #d3ai4 ,it is thou1 ,o king1 who art grown great1 and become mighty3 for thy greatness hath grown1 and hath reached to heaven1 and thy power unto the ends of the earth4 #d3bj4 ,and whereas the king saw a watcher1 and a holy one come down from heaven1 and say3 ,cut down the tree1 and destroy it1 but leave the stump of the roots thereof in the earth1 and let it be bound with iron and brass1 among the grass without1 and let it be sprinkled with the dew of heaven1 and let his feeding be with the wild beasts1 till seven times pass over him4 #d3ba4 ,this is the interpretation of the sentence of the most ,high1 which is come upon my lord1 the king4 #d3bb4 ,they shall cast thee out from among men1 and thy dwelling shall be with cattle1 and with wild beasts1 and thou shalt eat grass1 as an ox1 and shalt be wet with the dew of heaven3 and seven times shall pass over thee1 till thou know that the most ,high ruleth over the kingdom of men1 and giveth it to whomsoever he will4 #d3bc4 ,but whereas he commanded1 that the stump of the roots thereof1 that is1 of the tree1 should be left3 thy kingdom shall remain to thee1 after thou shalt have known that power is from heaven4 #d3bd4 ,wherefore1 ,o king1 let my counsel be acceptable to thee1 and redeem thou thy sins with alms1 and thy iniquities with works of mercy to the poor3 perhaps he will forgive thy offences4 #d3be4 ,all these things came upon king ,nabuchodonosor4 #d3bf4 ,at the end of twelve months he was walking in the palace of ,babylon4 #d3bg4 ,and the king answered1 and said3 ,is not this the great ,babylon1 which ,i have built1 to be the seat of the kingdom1 by the strength of my power1 and in the glory of my excellence8 #d3bh4 ,and while the word was yet in the king's mouth1 a voice came down from heaven3 ,to thee1 ,o king ,nabuchodonosor1 it is said3 ,thy kingdom shall pass from thee4 #d3bi4 ,and they shall cast thee out from among men1 and thy dwelling shall be with cattle and wild beasts3 thou shalt eat grass like an ox1 and seven times shall pass over thee1 till thou know that the most ,high ruleth in the kingdom of men1 and giveth it to whomsoever he will4 #d3cj4 ,the same hour the word was fulfilled upon ,nabuchodonosor1 and he was driven away from among men1 and did eat grass1 like an ox1 and his body was wet with the dew of heaven3 till his hairs grew like the feathers of eagles1 and his nails like birds' claws4 #d3ca4 ,now at the end of the days1 ,i1 ,nabuchodonosor1 lifted up my eyes to heaven1 and my sense was restored to me3 and ,i blessed the most ,high1 and ,i praised and glorified him that liveth for ever3 for his power is an everlasting power1 and his kingdom is to all generations4 #d3cb4 ,and all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing before him3 for he doth according to his will1 as well with the powers of heaven1 as among the inhabitants of the earth3 and there is none that can resist his hand1 and say to him3 ,why hast thou done it8 #d3cc4 ,at the same time my sense returned to me1 and ,i came to the honour and glory of my kingdom3 and my shape returned to me3 and my nobles1 and my magistrates1 sought for me1 and ,i was restored to my kingdom3 and greater majesty was added to me4 #d3cd4 ,therefore ,i1 ,nabuchodonosor1 do now praise1 and magnify1 and glorify the ,king of heaven3 because all his works are true1 and his ways judgments1 and them that walk in pride he is able to abase4 ,i1 ,nabuchodonosor1 do now1 etc444 ,from this place some commentators infer that this king became a true convert1 and dying not long after1 was probably saved4 ,daniel ,chapter #e ,baltasar's profane banquet3 his sentence is denounced by a handwriting on the wall1 which ,daniel reads and interprets4 #e3a4 ,baltasar1 the king1 made a great feast for a thousand of his nobles3 and every one drank according to his age4 ,baltasar444 ,he is believed to be the same as ,nabonydus1 the last of the ,chaldean kings1 grandson to ,nabuchodonosor4 ,he is called his son1 ver4 #b1 #aa1 etc41 according to the style of the scriptures1 because he was a descendant from him4 #e3b4 ,and being now drunk1 he commanded that they should bring the vessels of gold and silver1 which ,nabuchodonosor1 his father1 had brought away out of the temple1 that was in ,jerusalem1 that the king and his nobles1 and his wives1 and his concubines1 might drink in them4 #e3c4 ,then were the golden and silver vessels brought1 which he had brought away out of the temple that was in ,jeursalem3 and the king and his nobles1 his wives1 and his concubines1 drank in them4 #e3d4 ,they drank wine1 and praised their gods of gold1 and of silver1 of brass1 of iron1 and of wood1 and of stone4 #e3e4 ,in the same hour there appeared fingers1 as it were of the hand of a man1 writing over against the candlestick1 upon the surface of the wall of the king's palace3 and the king beheld the joints of the hand that wrote4 #e3f4 ,then was the king's countenance changed1 and his thoughts troubled him3 and the joints of his loins were loosed1 and his knees struck one against the other4 #e3g4 ,and the king cried out aloud to bring in the wise men1 the ,chaldeans1 and the soothsayers4 ,and the king spoke1 and said to the wise men of ,babylon3 ,whosoever shall read this writing1 and shall make known to me the interpretation thereof1 shall be clothed with purple1 and shall have a golden chain on his neck1 and shall be the third man in my kingdom4 #e3h4 ,then came in all the king's wise men1 but they could neither read the writing1 nor declare the interpretation to the king4 #e3i4 ,wherewith king ,baltasar was much troubled1 and his countenance was changed3 and his nobles also were troubled4 #e3aj4 ,then the queen1 on occasion of what had happened to the king1 and his nobles1 came into the banquet-house3 and she spoke1 and said3 ,o king1 live for ever3 let not thy thoughts trouble thee1 neither let thy countenance be changed4 ,the queen444 ,not the wife1 but the mother of the king4 #e3aa4 ,there is a man in thy kingdom that hath the spirit of the holy gods in him3 and in the days of thy father knowledge and wisdom were found in him3 for king ,nabuchodonosor1 thy father1 appointed him prince of the wise men1 enchanters1 ,chaldeans1 and soothsayers1 thy father1 ,i say1 ,o king3 #e3ab4 ,because a greater spirit1 and knowledge1 and understanding1 and interpretation of dreams1 and shewing of secrets1 and resolving of difficult things1 were found in him1 that is1 in ,daniel3 whom the king named ,baltassar4 ,now1 therefore1 let ,daniel be called for1 and he will tell the interpretation4 #e3ac4 ,then ,daniel was brought in before the king4 ,and the king spoke1 and said to him3 ,art thou ,daniel1 of the children of the captivity of ,juda1 whom my father1 the king1 brought out of ,judea8 #e3ad4 ,i have heard of thee1 that thou hast the spirit of the gods1 and excellent knowledge1 and understanding1 and wisdom are found in thee4 #e3ae4 ,and now the wise men1 the magicians1 have come in before me1 to read this writing1 and shew me the interpretation thereof2 and they could not declare to me the meaning of this writing4 #e3af4 ,but ,i have heard of thee1 that thou canst interpret obscure things1 and resolve difficult things3 now if thou art able to read the writing1 and to shew me the interpretation thereof1 thou shalt be clothed with purple1 and shalt have a chain of gold about thy neck1 and shalt be the third prince in my kingdom4 #e3ag4 ,to which ,daniel made answer1 and said before the king3 thy rewards be to thyself1 and the gifts of thy house give to another3 but the writing ,i will read to thee1 ,o king1 and shew thee the interpretation thereof4 #e3ah4 ,o king1 the most high ,god gave to ,nabuchodonosor1 thy father1 a kingdom1 and greatness1 and glory1 and honour4 #e3ai4 ,and for the greatness that he gave to him1 all people1 tribes1 and languages trembled1 and were afraid of him3 whom he would1 he slew3 and whom he would1 he destroyed3 and whom he would1 he set up3 and whom he would1 he brought down4 #e3bj4 ,but when his heart was lifted up1 and his spirit hardened unto pride1 he was put down from the throne of his kingdom1 and his glory was taken away4 #e3ba4 ,and he was driven out from the the sons of men1 and his heart was made like the beasts1 and his dwelling was with the wild asses1 and he did eat grass like an ox1 and his body was wet with the dew of heaven3 till he knew that the most ,high ruled in the kingdom of men1 and that he will set over it whomsoever it shall please him4 #e3bb4 ,thou also1 his son1 ,o ,baltasar1 hast not humbled thy heart1 whereas thou knewest all these things3 #e3bc4 ,but hast lifted thyself up against the ,lord of heaven3 and the vessels of his house have been brought before thee3 and thou1 and thy nobles1 and thy wives1 and thy concubines1 have drunk wine in them3 and thou hast praised the gods of silver1 and of gold1 and of brass1 of iron1 and of wood1 and of stone1 that neither see1 nor hear1 nor feel3 but the ,god who hath thy breath in his hand1 and all thy ways1 thou hast not glorified4 #e3bd4 ,wherefore1 he hath sent the part of the hand which hath written this that is set down4 #e3be4 ,and this is the writing that is written3 ,,mane1 ,,thecel1 ,,phares4 #e3bf4 ,and this is the interpretation of the word4 ,,mane3 ,god hath numbered thy kingdom1 and hath finished it4 #e3bg4 ,,thecel3 thou art weighed in the balance1 and art found wanting4 #e3bh4 ,,phares3 thy kingdom is divided1 and is given to the ,medes and ,persians4 #e3bi4 ,then by the king's command1 ,daniel was clothed with purple1 and a chain of gold was put about his neck3 and it was proclaimed of him that he had power as the third man in the kingdom4 #e3cj4 ,the same night ,baltasar1 the ,chaldean king1 was slain4 #e3ca4 ,and ,darius1 the ,mede1 succeeded to the kingdom1 being threescore and two years old4 ,darius444 ,he is called ,cyaxares by the historians2 and was the son of ,astyages1 and uncle to ,cyrus4 ,daniel ,chapter #f ,daniel is promoted by ,darius3 his enemies procure a law forbidding prayer2 for the transgression of this law ,daniel is cast into the lions' den3 but miraculously delivered4 #f3a4 ,it seemed good to ,darius1 and he appointed over the kingdom a hundred and twenty governors1 to be over his whole kingdom4 #f3b4 ,and three princes over them of whom ,daniel was one3 that the governors might give an account to them1 and the king might have no trouble4 #f3c4 ,and ,daniel excelled all the princes1 and governors3 because a greater spirit of ,god was in him4 #f3d4 ,and the king thought to set him over all the kingdom2 whereupon the princes1 and the governors1 sought to find occasion against ,daniel1 with regard to the king3 and they could find no cause1 nor suspicion1 because he was faithful1 and no fault1 nor suspicion was found in him4 #f3e4 ,then these men said3 ,we shall not find any occasion against this ,daniel1 unless perhaps concerning the law of his ,god4 #f3f4 ,then the princes1 and the governors1 craftily suggested to the king1 and spoke thus unto him3 ,king ,darius1 live for ever3 #f3g4 ,all the princes of the kingdom1 the magistrates1 and governors1 the senators1 and judges1 have consulted together1 that an imperial decree1 and an edict be published3 ,that whosoever shall ask any petition of any god1 or man1 for thirty days1 but of thee1 ,o king1 shall be cast into the den of the lions4 #f3h4 ,now1 therefore1 ,o king1 confirm the sentence1 and sign the decree3 that what is decreed by the ,medes and ,persians may not be altered1 nor any man be allowed to transgress it4 #f3i4 ,so king ,darius set forth the decree1 and established it4 #f3aj4 ,now1 when ,daniel knew this1 that is to say1 that the law was made1 he went into his house3 and opening the windows in his upper chamber towards ,jerusalem1 he knelt down three times a day1 and adored and gave thanks before his ,god1 as he had been accustomed to do before4 #f3aa4 ,wherefore those men carefully watching him1 found ,daniel praying and making supplication to his ,god4 #f3ab4 ,and they came and spoke to the king concerning the edict3 ,o king1 hast thou not decreed1 that every man that should make a request to any of the gods1 or men1 for thirty days1 but to thyself1 ,o king1 should be cast into the den of the lions8 ,and the king answered them1 saying3 ,the word is true1 according to the decree of the ,medes and ,persians1 which it is not lawful to violate4 #f3ac4 ,then they answered1 and said before the king3 ,daniel1 who is of the children of the captivity of ,juda1 hath not regarded thy law1 nor the decree that thou hast made3 but three times a day he maketh his prayer4 #f3ad4 ,now when the king had heard these words1 he was very much grieved1 and in behalf of ,daniel he set his heart to deliver him1 and even till sunset he laboured to save him4 #f3ae4 ,but those men perceiving the king's design1 said to him3 ,know thou1 ,o king1 that the law of the ,medes and ,persians is1 that no decree which the king hath made1 may be altered4 #f3af4 ,then the king commanded1 and they brought ,daniel1 and cast him into the den of the lions4 ,and the king said to ,daniel3 ,thy ,god1 whom thou always servest1 he will deliver thee4 #f3ag4 ,and a stone was brought1 and laid upon the mouth of the den3 which the king sealed with his own ring1 and with the ring of his nobles1 that nothing should be done against ,daniel4 #f3ah4 ,and the king went away to his house1 and laid himself down without taking supper1 and meat was not set before him1 and even sleep departed from him4 #f3ai4 ,then the king rising very early in the morning1 went in haste to the lions' den3 #f3bj4 ,and coming near to the den1 cried with a lamentable voice to ,daniel1 and said to him3 ,daniel1 servant of the living ,god1 hath thy ,god1 whom thou servest always1 been able1 thinkest thou1 to deliver thee from the lions8 #f3ba4 ,and ,daniel answering the king1 said3 ,o king1 live for ever3 #f3bb4 ,my ,god hath sent his angel1 and hath shut up the mouths of the lions1 and they have not hurt me3 forasmuch as before him justice hath been found in me3 yea1 and before thee1 ,o king1 ,i have done no offence4 #f3bc4 ,then was the king exceeding glad for him1 and he commanded that ,daniel should be taken out of the den3 and ,daniel was taken out of the den1 and no hurt was found in him1 because he believed in his ,god4 #f3bd4 ,and by the king's commandment1 those men were brought that had accused ,daniel3 and they were cast into the lions' den1 they and their children1 and their wives3 and they did not reach the bottom of the den1 before the lions caught them1 and broke all their bones in pieces4 #f3be4 ,then king ,darius wrote to all people1 tribes1 and languages1 dwelling in the whole earth3 ,,peace be multiplied unto you4 #f3bf4 ,it is decreed by me1 that in all my empire and my kingdom1 all men dread and fear the ,god of ,daniel4 ,for he is the living and eternal ,god for ever3 and his kingdom shall not be destroyed1 and his power shall be for ever4 #f3bg4 ,he is the deliverer1 and saviour1 doing signs and wonders in heaven1 and in earth3 who hath delivered ,daniel out of the lions' den4 #f3bh4 ,now ,daniel continued unto the reign of ,darius1 and the reign of ,cyrus1 the ,persian4 ,daniel ,chapter #g ,daniel's vision of the four beasts1 signifying four kingdoms3 of ,god sitting on his throne3 and of the opposite kingdoms of ,christ and ,antichrist4 #g3a4 ,in the first year of ,baltasar1 king of ,babylon1 ,daniel saw a dream3 and the vision of his head was upon his bed3 and writing the dream1 he comprehended it in a few words3 and relating the sum of it in short1 he said3 #g3b4 ,i saw in my vision by night1 and behold the four winds of the heavens strove upon the great sea4 #g3c4 ,and four great beasts1 different one from another1 came up out of the sea4 ,four great beasts444 ,viz41 the ,chaldean1 ,persian1 ,grecian1 and ,roman empires4 ,but some rather choose to understand the fourth beast of the successors of ,alexander the ,great1 more especially of them that reigned in ,asia and ,syria4 #g3d4 ,the first was like a lioness1 and had the wings of an eagle3 ,i beheld till her wings were plucked off1 and she was lifted up from the earth1 and stood upon her feet as a man1 and the heart of a man was given to her4 #g3e4 ,and behold another beast1 like a bear1 stood up on one side3 and there were three rows in the mouth thereof1 and in the teeth thereof1 and thus they said to it3 ,arise1 devour much flesh4 #g3f4 ,after this ,i beheld1 and lo1 another like a leopard1 and it had upon it four wings1 as of a fowl1 and the beast had four heads1 and power was given to it4 #g3g4 ,after this ,i beheld in the vision of the night1 and lo1 a fourth beast1 terrible and wonderful1 and exceeding strong1 it had great iron teeth1 eating and breaking in pieces1 and treading down the rest with his feet3 and it was unlike to the other beasts which ,i had seen before it1 and had ten horns4 ,ten horns444 ,that is1 ten kingdoms1 7as ,apoc4 #ag4ab17 among which the empire of the fourth beast shall be parcelled4 ,or ten kings of the number of the successors of ,alexander2 as figures of such as shall be about the time of ,antichrist4 #g3h4 ,i considered the horns1 and behold another little horn sprung out of the midst of them3 and three of the first horns were plucked up at the presence thereof3 and behold eyes like the eyes of a man were in this horn1 and a mouth speaking great things4 ,another little horn444 ,this is commonly understood of ,antichrist4 ,it may also be applied to that great persecutor ,antiochus ,epiphanes1 as a figure of ,antichrist4 #g3i4 ,i beheld till thrones were placed1 and the ancient of days sat3 his garment was white as snow1 and the hair of his head like clean wool3 his throne like flames of fire3 the wheels of it like a burning fire4 #g3aj4 ,a swift stream of fire issued forth from before him3 thousands of thousands ministered to him1 and ten thousand times a hundred thousand stood before him3 the judgment sat1 and the books were opened4 #g3aa4 ,i beheld1 because of the voice of the great words which that horn spoke3 and ,i saw that the beast was slain1 and the body thereof was destroyed1 and given to the fire to be burnt3 #g3ab4 ,and that the power of the other beasts was taken away3 and that times of life were appointed them for a time1 and a time4 #g3ac4 ,i beheld1 therefore1 in the vision of the night1 and lo1 one like the ,son of man came with the clouds of heaven1 and he came even to the ancient of days3 and they presented him before him4 #g3ad4 ,and he gave him power1 and glory1 and a kingdom3 and all peoples1 tribes1 and tongues shall serve him3 his power is an everlasting power that shall not be taken away3 and his kingdom that shall not be destroyed4 #g3ae4 ,my spirit trembled2 ,i1 ,daniel1 was affrighted at these things1 and the visions of my head troubled me4 #g3af4 ,i went near to one of them that stood by1 and asked the truth of him concerning all these things1 and he told me the interpretation of the words1 and instructed me3 #g3ag4 ,these four great beasts1 are four kingdoms1 which shall arise out of the earth4 #g3ah4 ,but the saints of the most high ,god shall take the kingdom3 and they shall possess the kingdom for ever and ever4 #g3ai4 ,after this ,i would diligently learn concerning the fourth beast1 which was very different from all1 and exceeding terrible3 his teeth and claws were of iron3 he devoured and broke in pieces1 and the rest he stamped upon with his feet3 #g3bj4 ,and concerning the ten horns that he had on his head3 and concerning the other that came up1 before which three horns fell3 and of that horn that had eyes1 and a mouth speaking great things1 and was greater than the rest4 #g3ba4 ,i beheld1 and lo1 that horn made war against the saints1 and prevailed over them1 #g3bb4 ,till the ancient of days came and gave judgment to the saints of the most ,high1 and the time came1 and the saints obtained the kingdom4 #g3bc4 ,and thus he said3 ,the fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth1 which shall be greater than all the kingdoms1 and shall devour the whole earth1 and shall tread it down1 and break it in pieces4 #g3bd4 ,and the ten horns of the same kingdom1 shall be ten kings3 and another shall rise up after them1 and he shall be mightier than the former1 and he shall bring down three kings4 #g3be4 ,and he shall speak words against the ,high ,one1 and shall crush the saints of the most ,high3 and he shall think himself able to change times and laws1 and they shall be delivered into his hand until a time1 and times1 and half a time4 ,a time1 and times1 and half a time444 ,that is1 three years and a half2 which is supposed to be the length of the duration of the persecution of ,antichrist4 #g3bf4 ,and a judgment shall sit1 that his power may be taken away1 and be broken in pieces1 and perish even to the end4 #g3bg4 ,and that the kingdom1 and power1 and the greatness of the kingdom1 under the whole heaven1 may be given to the people of the saints of the most ,high3 whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom1 and all kings shall serve him1 and shall obey him4 #g3bh4 ,hitherto is the end of the word4 ,i1 ,daniel1 was much troubled with my thoughts1 and my countenance was changed in me3 but ,i kept the word in my heart4 ,daniel ,chapter #h ,daniel's vision of the ram and the he goat interpreted by the angel ,gabriel4 #h3a4 ,in the third year of the reign of king ,baltasar1 a vision appeared to me4 ,i1 ,daniel1 after what ,i had seen in the beginning1 #h3b4 ,saw in my vision when ,i was in the castle of ,susa1 which is in the province of ,elam3 and ,i saw in the vision that ,i was over the gate of ,ulai4 #h3c4 ,and ,i lifted up my eyes1 and saw3 and behold a ram stood before the water1 having two high horns1 and one higher than the other1 and growing up4 ,afterward ,a ram444 ,the empire of the ,medes and ,persians4 #h3d4 ,i saw the ram pushing with his horns against the west1 and against the north1 and against the south3 and no beasts could withstand him1 nor be delivered out of his hand3 and he did according to his own will1 and became great4 #h3e4 ,and ,i understood3 and behold a he goat came from the west on the face of the whole earth1 and he touched not the ground1 and the he goat had a notable horn between his eyes4 ,a he goat444 ,the empire of the ,greeks1 or ,macedonians4 ,ibid4 ,he touched not the ground444 ,he conquered all before him1 with so much rapidity1 that he seemed rather to fly1 than to walk upon the earth4-,ibid4 ,a notable horn444 ,alexander the ,great4 #h3f4 ,and he went up to the ram that had the horns1 which ,i had seen standing before the gate1 and he ran towards him in the force of his strength4 #h3g4 ,and when he was come near the ram1 he was enraged against him1 and struck the ram3 and broke his two horns1 and the ram could not withstand him3 and when he had cast him down on the ground1 he stamped upon him1 and none could deliver the ram out of his hand4 #h3h4 ,and the he goat became exceeding great3 and when he was grown1 the great horn was broken1 and there came up four horns under it towards the four winds of heaven4 ,four horns444 ,seleucus1 ,antigonus1 ,philip1 and ,ptolemeus1 the successors of ,alexander1 who divided his empire among them4 #h3i4 ,and out of one of them came forth a little horn3 and it became great against the south1 and against the east1 and against the strength4 ,a little horn444 ,antiochus ,epiphanes1 a descendant of ,seleucus4 ,he grew against the south1 and the east1 by his victories over the kings of ,egypt and ,armenia3 and against the strength1 that is1 against ,jerusalem and the people of ,god4 #h3aj4 ,and it was magnified even unto the strength of heaven3 and it threw down of the strength1 and of the stars1 and trod upon them4 ,unto the strength of heaven444 or1 against the strength of heaven4 ,so are here called the army of the ,jews1 the people of ,god4 #h3aa4 ,and it was magnified even to the prince of the strength3 and it took away from him the continual sacrifice1 and cast down the place of his sanctuary4 #h3ab4 ,and strength was given him against the continual sacrifice1 because of sins3 and truth shall be cast down on the ground1 and he shall do and shall prosper4 #h3ac4 ,and ,i heard one of the saints speaking1 and one saint said to another ,i know not to whom1 that was speaking3 ,how long shall be the vision1 concerning the continual sacrifice1 and the sin of the desolation that is made3 and the sanctuary1 and the strength be trodden under foot8 #h3ad4 ,and he said to him3 ,unto evening and morning two thousand three hundred days3 and the sanctuary shall be cleansed4 ,unto evening and morning two thousand three hundred days444 ,that is1 six years and almost four months3 which was the whole time from the beginning of the persecution of ,antiochus till his death4 #h3ae4 ,and it came to pass when ,i1 ,daniel1 saw the vision1 and sought the meaning1 that behold there stood before me as it were the appearance of a man4 #h3af4 ,and ,i heard the voice of a man between ,ulai3 and he called1 and said3 ,gabriel1 make this man to understand the vision4 #h3ag4 ,and he came1 and stood near where ,i stood3 and when he was come1 ,i fell on my face1 trembling1 and he said to me3 ,understand1 ,o son of man1 for in the time of the end the vision shall be fulfilled4 #h3ah4 ,and when he spoke to me1 ,i fell flat on the ground3 and he touched me1 and set me upright4 #h3ai4 ,and he said to me3 ,i will shew thee what things are to come to pass in the end of the malediction3 for the time hath its end4 #h3bj4 ,the ram1 which thou sawest with horns1 is the king of the ,medes and ,persians4 #h3ba4 ,and the he goat1 is the king of the ,greeks1 and the great horn that was between his eyes1 the same is the first king4 #h3bb4 ,but whereas when that was borken1 there arose up four for it1 four kings shall rise up of his nation1 but not with his strength4 #h3bc4 ,and after their reign1 when iniquities shall be grown up1 there shall arise a king of a shameless face1 and understanding dark sentences4 #h3bd4 ,and his power shall be strengthened1 but not by his own force3 and he shall lay all things waste1 and shall prosper1 and do more than can be believed4 ,and he shall destroy the mighty1 and the people of the saints1 #h3be4 ,according to his will1 and craft shall be successful in his hand3 and his heart shall be puffed up1 and in the abundance of all things he shall kill many3 and he shall rise up aginst the prince of princes1 and shall be broken without hand4 #h3bf4 ,and the vision of the evening and the morning1 which was told1 is true3 thou1 therefore1 seal up the vision1 because it shall come to pass after many days4 #h3bg4 ,and ,i1 ,daniel1 languished1 and was sick for some days3 and when ,i was risen up1 ,i did the king's business1 and ,i was astonished at the vision1 and there was none that could interpret it4 ,daniel ,chapter #i ,daniel's confession and prayer3 ,gabriel informs him concerning the seventy weeks to the coming of ,christ4 #i3a4 ,in the first year of ,darius1 the son of ,assuerus1 of the seed of the ,medes1 who reigned over the kingdom of the ,chaldeans3 #i3b4 ,the first year of his reign ,i1 ,daniel1 understood by books the number of the years1 concerning which the word of the ,lord came to ,jeremias1 the prophet1 that seventy years should be accomplished of the desolation of ,jerusalem4 #i3c4 ,and ,i set my face to the ,lord1 my ,god1 to pray and make supplication with fasting1 and sackcloth1 and ashes4 #i3d4 ,and ,i prayed to the ,lord1 my ,god1 and ,i made my confession1 and said3 ,i beseech thee1 ,o ,lord ,god1 great and terrible1 who keepest the covenant1 and mercy to them that love thee1 and keep thy commandments4 #i3e4 ,we have sinned1 we have committed iniquity1 we have done wickedly1 and have revolted3 and we have gone aside from thy commandments1 and thy judgments4 #i3f4 ,we have not hearkened to thy servants1 the prophets1 that have spoken in thy name to our kings1 to our princes1 to our fathers1 and to all the people of the land4 #i3g4 ,to thee1 ,o ,lord1 justice3 but to us confusion of face1 as at this day to the men of ,juda1 and to the inhabitants of ,jerusalem1 and to all ,israel1 to them that are near1 and to them that are far off1 in all the countries whither thou hast driven them1 for their iniquities1 by which they have sinned against thee4 #i3h4 ,o ,lord1 to us belongeth confusion of face1 to our princes1 and to our fathers1 that have sinned4 #i3i4 ,but to thee1 the ,lord our ,god1 mercy and forgiveness1 for we have departed from thee3 #i3aj4 ,and we have not hearkened to the voice of the ,lord1 our ,god1 to walk in his law1 which he set before us by his servants1 the prophets4 #i3aa4 ,and all ,israel have transgressed thy law1 and have turned away from hearing thy voice1 and the malediction1 and the curse1 which is written in the book of ,moses1 the servant of ,god1 is fallen upon us1 because we have sinned against him4 #i3ab4 ,and he hath confirmed his words which he spoke against us1 and against our princes that judged us1 that he would bring in upon us a great evil1 such as never was under all the heaven1 according to that which hath been done in ,jerusalem4 #i3ac4 ,as it is written in the law of ,moses1 all this evil is come upon us3 and we entreated not thy face1 ,o ,lord our ,god1 that we might turn from our iniquities1 and think on thy truth4 #i3ad4 ,and the ,lord hath watched upon the evil1 and hath brought it upon us3 the ,lord1 our ,god1 is just in all his works which he hath done3 for we have not hearkened to his voice4 #i3ae4 ,and now1 ,o ,lord1 our ,god1 who hast brought forth thy people out of the land of ,egypt1 with a strong hand1 and hast made thee a name as at this day3 we have sinned1 we have committed iniquity1 #i3af4 ,o ,lord1 against all thy justice3 let thy wrath and thy indignation be turned away1 ,i beseech thee1 from thy city1 ,jerusalem1 and from thy holy mountain4 ,for by reason of our sins1 and the iniquities of our fathers1 ,jerusalem1 and thy people1 are a reproach to all that are round about us4 #i3ag4 ,now1 therefore1 ,o our ,god1 hear the supplication of thy servant1 and his prayers3 and shew thy face upon thy sanctuary1 which is desolate1 for thy own sake4 #i3ah4 ,incline1 ,o my ,god1 thy ear1 and hear3 open thy eyes1 and see our desolation1 and the city upon which thy name is called3 for it is not for our justifications that we present our prayers before thy face1 but for the multitude of thy tender mercies4 #i3ai4 ,o ,lord1 hear3 ,o ,lord1 be appeased3 hearken1 and do3 delay not1 for thy own sake1 ,o my ,god3 because thy name is invocated upon thy city1 and upon thy people4 #i3bj4 ,now while ,i was yet speaking1 and praying1 and confessing my sins1 and the sins of my people of ,israel1 and presenting my supplications in the sight of my ,god1 for the holy mountain of my ,god3 #i3ba4 ,as ,i was yet speaking in prayer1 behold the man1 ,gabriel1 whom ,i had seen in the vision at the beginning1 flying swiftly1 touched me at the time of the evening sacrifice4 ,the man ,gabriel444 ,the angel ,gabriel in the shape of a man4 #i3bb4 ,and he instructed me1 and spoke to me1 and said3 ,o ,daniel1 ,i am now come forth to teach thee1 and that thou mightest understand4 #i3bc4 ,from the beginning of thy prayers the word came forth3 and ,i am come to shew it to thee1 because thou art a man of desires3 therefore1 do thou mark the word1 and understand the vision4 ,man of desires444 that is1 ardently praying for the ,jews then in captivity4 #i3bd4 ,seventy weeks are shortened upon thy people1 and upon thy holy city1 that transgression may be finished1 and sin may have an end1 and iniquity may be abolished2 and everlasting justice may be brought2 and vision and prophecy may be fulfilled2 and the ,saint of saints may be anointed4 ,seventy weeks444 ,viz41 of years1 7or seventy times seven1 that is1 #dij years17 are shortened2 that is1 fixed and determined1 so that the time shall be no longer4 #i3be4 ,know thou1 therefore1 and take notice3 that from the going forth of the word1 to build up ,jerusalem again1 unto ,christ1 the prince1 there shall be seven weeks1 and sixty-two weeks3 and the street shall be built again1 and the walls1 in straitness of times4 ,from the going forth of the word1 etc444 ,that is1 from the twentieth year of king ,artaxerxes1 when by his commandment ,nehemias rebuilt the walls of ,jerusalem1 #b ,esd4 #b4 ,from which time1 according to the best chronology1 there were just sixty-nine weeks of years1 that is1 #dhc years to the baptism of ,christ1 when he first began to preach and execute the office of ,messias4-,ibid4 ,in straitness of times444 angustia temporum3 which may allude both to the difficulties and opposition they met with in building3 and to the shortness of the time in which they finished the wall1 viz41 fifty-two days4 #i3bf4 ,and after sixty-two weeks ,christ shall be slain3 and the people that shall deny him shall not be his4 ,and a people1 with their leader1 that shall come1 shall destroy the city1 and the sanctuary3 and the end thereof shall be waste1 and after the end of the war the appointed desolation4 ,a people with their leader444 ,the ,romans under ,titus4 #i3bg4 ,and he shall confirm the covenant with many1 in one week3 and in the half of the week the victim and the sacrifice shall fail3 and there shall be in the temple the abomination of desolation3 and the desolation shall continue even to the consummation1 and to the end4 ,in the half of the week444 or1 in the middle of the week1 etc4 ,because ,christ preached three years and a half3 and then by his sacrifice upon the cross abolished all the sacrifices of the law4-,ibid4 ,the abomination of desolation444 ,some understand this of the profanation of the temple by the crimes of the ,jews1 and by the bloody faction of the zealots4 ,others of the bringing in thither the ensigns and standard of the pagan ,romans4 ,others1 in fine1 distinguish three different times of desolation3 viz41 that under ,antiochus2 that when the temple was destroyed by the ,romans2 and the last near the end of the world under ,antichrist4 ,to all which1 as they suppose1 this prophecy may have a relation4 ,daniel ,chapter #aj ,daniel having humbled himself by fasting and penance seeth a vision1 with which he is much terrified2 but he is comforted by an angel4 #aj3a4 ,in the third year of ,cyrus1 king of the ,persians1 a word was revealed to ,daniel1 surnamed ,baltassar1 and a true word1 and great strength3 and he understood the word3 for there is need of understanding in a vision4 #aj3b4 ,in those days ,i1 ,daniel1 mourned the days of three weeks4 #aj3c4 ,i ate no desirable bread1 and neither flesh1 nor wine1 entered into my mouth1 neither was ,i anointed with ointment3 till the days of three weeks were accomplished4 #aj3d4 ,and in the four and twentieth day of the first month1 ,i was by the great river1 which is the ,tigris4 #aj3e4 ,and ,i lifted up my eyes1 and ,i saw3 and behold a man clothed in linen1 and his loins were girded with the finest gold3 #aj3f4 ,and his body was like the chrysolite1 and his face as the appearance of lightning1 and his eyes as a burning lamp3 and his arms1 and all downward even to the feet1 like in appearance to glittering brass3 and the voice of his word like the voice of a multitude4 #aj3g4 ,and ,i1 ,daniel alone1 saw the vision3 for the men that were with me saw it not3 but an exceeding great terror fell upon them1 and they fled away1 and hid themselves4 #aj3h4 ,and ,i1 being left alone1 saw this great vision3 and there remained no strength in me1 and the appearance of my countenance was changed in me1 and ,i fainted away1 and retained no strength4 #aj3i4 ,and ,i heard the voice of his words3 and when ,i heard ,i lay in a consternation upon my face1 and my face was close to the ground4 #aj3aj4 ,and behold a hand touched me1 and lifted me up upon my knees1 and upon the joints of my hands4 #aj3aa4 ,and he said to me3 ,daniel1 thou man of desires1 understand the words that ,i speak to thee1 and stand upright3 for ,i am sent now to thee4 ,and when he had said this word to me1 ,i stood trembling4 #aj3ab4 ,and he said to me3 ,fear not1 ,daniel3 for from the first day that thou didst set thy heart to understand1 to afflict thyself in the sight of thy ,god1 thy words have been heard3 and ,i am come for thy words4 #aj3ac4 ,but the prince of the kingdom of the ,persians resisted me one and twenty days3 and behold ,michael1 one of the chief princes1 came to help me1 and ,i remained there by the king of the ,persians4 ,the prince1 etc444 ,that is1 the angel guardian of ,persia3 who according to his office1 seeking the spiritual good of the ,persians was desirous that many of the ,jews should remain among them4 #aj3ad4 ,but ,i am come to teach thee what things shall befall thy people in the latter days1 for as yet the vision is for days4 #aj3ae4 ,and when he was speaking such words to me1 ,i cast down my countenance to the ground1 and held my peace4 #aj3af4 ,and behold as it were the likeness of a son of man touched my lips3 then ,i opened my mouth and spoke1 and said to him that stood before me3 ,o my lord1 at the sight of thee my joints are loosed1 and no strength hath remained in me4 #aj3ag4 ,and how can the servant of my lord speak with my lord8 for no strength remaineth in me2 moreover1 my breath is stopped4 #aj3ah4 ,therefore1 he that looked like a man1 touched me again1 and strengthened me4 #aj3ai4 ,and he said3 ,fear not1 ,o man of desires1 peace be to thee3 take courage1 and be strong4 ,and when he spoke to me1 ,i grew strong1 and ,i said3 ,speak1 ,o my lord1 for thou hast strengthened me4 #aj3bj4 ,and he said3 ,dost thou know wherefore ,i am come to thee8 ,and now ,i will return1 to fight against the prince of the ,persians4 ,when ,i went forth1 there appeared the prince of the ,greeks coming4 #aj3ba4 ,but ,i will tell thee what is set down in the scripture of truth3 and none is my helper in all these things1 but ,michael your prince4 ,michael your prince444 ,the guardian general of the church of ,god4 ,daniel ,chapter #aa ,the angel declares to ,daniel many things to come1 with regard to the ,persian and ,grecian kings3 more especially with regard to ,antiochus as a figure of ,antichrist4 #aa3a4 ,and from the first year of ,darius1 the ,mede1 ,i stood up1 that he might be strengthened1 and confirmed4 #aa3b4 ,and now ,i will shew thee the truth4 ,behold1 there shall stand yet three kings in ,persia1 and the fourth shall be enriched exceedingly above them all3 and when he shall be grown mighty by his riches1 he shall stir up all against the kingdom of ,greece4 ,three kings444 ,viz41 ,cambyses1 ,smerdes ,magus1 and ,darius1 the son of ,hystaspes4-,ibid4 ,the fourth444 ,xerxes4 #aa3c4 ,but there shall rise up a strong king1 and shall rule with great power3 and he shall do what he pleaseth4 ,a strong king444 ,alexander4 #aa3d4 ,and when he shall come to his height1 his kingdom shall be broken1 and it shall be divided towards the four winds of the heaven3 but not to his posterity1 nor according to his power with which he ruled4 ,for his kingdom shall be rent in pieces1 even for strangers1 besides these4 #aa3e4 ,and the king of the south shall be strengthened1 and one of his princes shall prevail over him1 and he shall rule with great power3 for his dominions shall be great4 ,the king of the south444 ,ptolemeus the son of ,lagus1 king of ,egypt1 which lies south of ,jerusalem4-,ibid4 ,one of his princes444 that is1 one of ,alexander's princes1 shall prevail over him3 that is1 shall be stronger than the king of ,egypt4 ,he speaks of ,seleucus ,nicator1 king of ,asia and ,syria1 whose successors are here called the kings of the north1 because their dominions lay to the north in respect to ,jerusalem4 #aa3f4 ,and after the end of years they shall be in league together3 and the daughter of the king of the south shall come to the king of the north to make friendship1 but she shall not obtain the strength of the arm1 neither shall her seed stand3 and she shall be given up1 and her young men that brought her1 and they that strengthened her in these times4 ,the daughter of the king of the south444 ,viz41 ,berenice1 daughter of ,ptolemeus ,philadelphus1 given in marriage to ,antiochus ,theos1 grandson of ,seleucus4 #aa3g4 ,and a plant of the bud of her roots shall stand up3 and he shall come with an army1 and shall enter into the province of the king of the north3 and he shall abuse them1 and shall prevail4 ,a plant1 etc444 ,ptolemeus ,evergetes1 the son of ,philadelphus4 #aa3h4 ,and he shall also carry away captive into ,egypt their gods1 and their graven things1 and their precious vessels of gold and silver3 he shall prevail aginst the king of the north4 ,the king of the north444 ,seleucus ,callinicus4 #aa3i4 ,and the king of the south shall enter into the kingdom1 and shall return to his own land4 #aa3aj4 ,and his sons shall be provoked1 and they shall assemble a multitude of great forces3 and he shall come with haste like a flood3 and he shall return1 and be stirred up1 and he shall join battle with his force4 ,his sons444 ,seleucus ,ceraunius1 and ,antiochus the ,great1 the sons of ,callinicus4-,ibid4 ,he shall come444 ,viz41 ,antiochus the ,great4 #aa3aa4 ,and the king of the south being provoked1 shall go forth1 and shall fight against the king of the north1 and shall prepare an exceeding great multitude1 and a multitude shall be given into his hands4 ,the king of the south444 ,ptolemeus ,philopator1 son of ,evergetes4 #aa3ab4 ,and he shall take a multitude1 and his heart shall be lifted up1 and he shall cast down many thousands3 but he shall not prevail4 #aa3ac4 ,for the king of the north shall return1 and shall prepare a multitude much greater than before3 and in the end of times1 and years1 he shall come in haste with a great army1 and much riches4 #aa3ad4 ,and in those times many shall rise up against the king of the south1 and the children of prevaricators of thy people shall lift up themselves to fulfil the vision1 and they shall fall4 #aa3ae4 ,and the king of the north shall come1 and shall cast up a mount1 and shall take the best fenced cities3 and the arms of the south shall not withstand1 and his chosen ones shall rise up to resist1 and they shall not have strength4 #aa3af4 ,and he shall come upon him1 and do according to his pleasure1 and there shall be none to stand against his face3 and he shall stand in the glorious land1 and it shall be consumed by his hand4 ,he shall come upon him444 ,viz41 ,antiochus shall come upon the king of the south4-,ibid4 ,the glorious land444 ,judea4 #aa3ag4 ,and he shall set his face to come to possess all his kingdom1 and he shall make upright conditions with him3 and he shall give him a daughter of women1 to overthrow it3 and she shall not stand1 neither shall she be for him4 ,all his kingdom444 ,viz41 all the kingdom of ,ptolemeus ,epiphanes1 son of ,philopator4-,ibid4 ,a daughter of women444 ,that is1 a most beautiful woman1 viz41 his daughter ,cleopatra4-,ibid4 ,to overthrow it444 ,viz41 the kingdom of ,epiphanes3 but his policy shall not succeed2 for ,cleopatra shall take more to heart the interest of her husband1 than that of her father4 #aa3ah4 ,and he shall turn his face to the islands1 and shall take many3 and he shall cause the prince of his reproach to cease1 and his reproach shall be turned upon him4 ,the prince of his reproach444 ,seipio the ,roman general1 called the prince of his reproach1 because he overthrew ,antiochus1 and obliged him to submit to very dishonourable terms1 before he would cease from the war4 #aa3ai4 ,and he shall turn his face to the empire of his own land1 and he shall stumble1 and fall1 ans shall not be found4 #aa3bj4 ,and there shall stand up in his place one most vile1 and unworthy of kingly honour3 and in a few days he shall be destroyed1 not in rage nor in battle4 ,one most vile444 ,seleucus ,philopator1 who sent ,heliodorus to plunder the temple3 and was shortly after slain by the same ,heliodorus4 #aa3ba4 ,and there shall stand up in his place one despised1 and the kingly honour shall not be given him3 and he shall come privately1 and shall obtain the kingdom by fraud4 ,one despised444 ,viz41 ,antiochus ,epiphanes1 who at first was despised and not received for king4 ,what is here said of this prince1 is accommodated by ,st4 ,jerome and others to ,antichrist2 of whom this ,antiochus was a figure4 #aa3bb4 ,and the him4-,ibid4 ,the prince of the covenant444 or1 of the league4 ,the chief of them that conspired against him3 or the king of ,egypt his most powerful adversary4 #aa3bc4 ,and after friendships1 he will deal deceitfully with him3 and he shall go up1 and shall overcome with a small people4 #aa3bd4 ,and he shall enter into rich and plentiful cities3 and he shall do that which his fathers never did1 nor his fathers' fathers3 he shall scatter their spoils1 and their prey1 and their riches1 and shall forecast devices against the best fenced places3 and this until a time4 #aa3be4 ,and his strength1 and his heart1 shall be stirred up aginst the king of the south1 with a great army3 and the king of the south shall be stirred up to battle with many and very strong succours3 and they shall not stand1 ,romans444 ,popilius1 and the other ,roman ambassadors1 who came in galleys1 and obliged him to depart from ,egypt4 #aa3ca4 ,and arms shall stand on his part1 and they shall defile the sanctuary of strength1 and shall take away the continual sacrifice3 and they shall place there the abomination unto desolation4 ,they shall place there the abomination1 etc444 ,the idol of ,jupiter ,olympius1 which ,antiochus ordered to be set up in the sanctuary of the temple3 which is here called the sanctuary of strength1 from the ,almighty that was worshipped there4 #aa3cb4 ,and such as deal wickedly come even to the top thereof1 and none shall help him4 ,apadno444 ,some take it for the proper name of a place3 others1 from the ,hebrew1 translate it his palace4 ,daniel ,chapter #ab ,michael shall stand up for the people of ,god3 with other things relating to ,antichrist1 and the end of the world4 #ab3a4 ,but at that time shall ,michael rise up1 the great prince1 who standeth for the children of thy people3 and a time shall come1 such as never was from the time that nations began1 even until that time4 ,and at that time shall thy people be saved1 every one that shall be found written in the book4 #ab3b4 ,and many of those that sleep in the dust of the earth1 shall awake3 some unto life everlasting1 and others unto reproach1 to see it always4 #ab3c4 ,but they that are learned1 shall shine as the brightness of the firmament3 and they that instruct many to justice1 as stars for all eternity4 ,learned444 ,viz41 in the law of ,god and true wisdom1 which consists in knowing and loving upon the waters of the river3 ,how long shall it be to the end of these wonders8 #ab3g4 ,and ,i heard the man that was clothed in linen1 that stood upon the waters of the river1 when he had lifted up his right hand1 and his left hand to heaven1 and had sworn by him that liveth for ever1 that it should be unto a time1 and times1 and half a time4 ,and when the scattering of the band of the holy ,daniel1 because the words are shut up1 and sealed until the appointed time4 #ab3aj4 ,many shall be chosen1 and made white1 and shall be tried as fire3 and the wicked shall deal wickedly1 and none of the wicked shall understand1 but the learned shall understand4 #ab3aa4 ,and from the time when the continual sacrifice shall be taken away1 and the abomination unto desolation shall be set up1 there shall be a thousand two hundred ninety days4 #ab3ab4 ,blessed is he that waitesth1 and cometh unto a thousand three hundred thirty-five days4 #ab3ac4 ,but go thou thy ways until the time appointed3 and thou shalt rest1 and stand in thy lot unto the end of the days4 ,daniel ,chapter #ac ,the history of ,susanna and the two elders4 ,this history of ,susanna1 in all the ancient ,greek and ,latin ,bibles1 was placed in the beginning of the book of ,daniel3 till ,st4 ,jerome1 in his translation1 detached it from thence2 because he did not find it in the ,hebrew3 which is also the case of the history of ,bel and the ,dragon4 ,but both the one and the other are received by the ,catholic ,church3 and were from the very beginning a part of the ,christian ,bible4 #ac3a4 ,now there was a man that dwelt in ,babylon1 and his name was ,joakim3 #ac3b4 ,and he took a wife1 whose name was ,susanna1 the daughter of ,helcias1 a very beautiful woman1 and one that feared ,god4 #ac3c4 ,for her parents being just1 had instructed their daughter according to the law of ,moses4 #ac3d4 ,now ,joakim was very rich1 and had an orchard near his house3 and the ,jews resorted to him1 because he was the most honourable of them all4 #ac3e4 ,and there were two of the ancients of the people appointed judges that year1 of whom the ,lord said3 ,that iniquity came out from ,babylon1 from the ancient judges1 that seemed to govern the people4 #ac3f4 ,these men frequented the house of ,joakim1 and all that hand any matters of judgment came to them4 #ac3g4 ,and when the people departed away at noon1 ,susanna went in1 and walked in her husband's orchard4 #ac3h4 ,and the old men saw her going in every day1 and walking3 and they were inflamed with lust towards her3 #ac3i4 ,and they perverted their own mind1 and turned away their eyes1 that they might not look unto heaven1 nor remember just judgments4 #ac3aj4 ,so they were both wounded with the love of her1 yet they did not make known their grief one to the other4 #ac3aa4 ,for they were ashamed to declare to one another their lust1 being desirous to have to do with her3 #ac3ab4 ,and they watched carefully every day to see her4 ,and one said to the other3 #ac3ac4 ,let us now go home1 for it is dinner time4 ,so going out1 they departed one from another4 #ac3ad4 ,and turning back again1 they came both to the same place3 and asking one another the cause1 they acknowledged their lust3 and then they agreed together upon a time1 when they might find her alone4 #ac3ae4 ,and it fell out1 as they watched a fit day1 she went in on a time1 as yesterday and the day before1 with two maids only1 and was desirous to wash herself in the orchard3 for it was hot weather4 #ac3af4 ,and there was nobody there1 but the two old men that had hid themselves1 and were beholding her4 #ac3ag4 ,so she said to the maids3 ,bring me oil1 and washing balls1 and shut the doors of the orchard1 that ,i may wash me4 #ac3ah4 ,and they did as she bade them3 and they shut the doors of the orchard1 and went out by a back door to fetch what she had commanded them1 and they knew not that the elders were hid within4 #ac3ai4 ,now when the maids were gone forth1 the two elders arose1 and ran to her1 and said3 #ac3bj4 ,behold the doors of the orchard are shut1 and nobody seeth us1 and we are in love with thee3 wherefore consent to us1 and lie with us4 #ac3ba4 ,but if thou wilt not1 we will bear witness against thee1 that a young man was with thee1 and therefore thou didst send away thy maids from thee4 #ac3bb4 ,susanna sighed1 and said3 ,i am straitened on every side3 for if ,i do this thing1 it is death to me3 and if ,i do it not1 ,i shall not escape your hands4 #ac3bc4 ,but it is better for me to fall into your hands without doing it1 than to sin in the sight of the ,lord4 #ac3bd4 ,with that ,susanna cried out with a loud voice3 and the elders also cried out against her4 #ac3be4 ,and one of them ran to the door of the orchard1 and opened it4 #ac3bf4 ,so when the servants of the house heard the cry in the orchard1 they rushed in by the back door1 to see what was the matter4 #ac3bg4 ,but after the old men had spoken1 the servants were greatly ashamed3 for never had there been any such word said of ,susanna4 ,and on the next day1 #ac3bh4 ,when the people were come to ,joakim1 her husband1 the two elders also came full of wicked device against ,susanna1 to put her to death4 #ac3bi4 ,and they said before the people3 ,send to ,susanna1 daughter of ,helcias1 the wife of ,joakim4 ,and presently they sent4 #ac3cj4 ,and she came with her parents1 and children and all her kindred4 #ac3ca4 ,now ,susanna was exceeding delicate1 and beautiful to behold4 #ac3cb4 ,but those wicked men commanded that her face should be uncovered1 7for she was covered7 that so at least they might be satisfied with her beauty4 #ac3cc4 ,therefore her friends1 and all her acquaintance wept4 #ac3cd4 ,but the two elders rising up in the midst of the people1 laid their hands upon her head4 #ac3ce4 ,and she weeping1 looked up to heaven1 for her heart had confidence in the ,lord4 #ac3cf4 ,and the elders said3 ,as we walked in the orchard alone1 this woman came in with two maids1 and shut the doors of the orchard1 and sent away the maids from her4 #ac3cg4 ,then a young man that was there hid came to her1 and lay with her4 #ac3ch4 ,but we that were in a corner of the orchard1 seeing this wickedness1 ran up to them1 and we saw them lie together4 #ac3ci4 ,and him indeed we could not take1 because he was stronger than us1 and opening the doors1 he leaped out3 #ac3dj4 ,but having taken this woman1 we asked who the young man was1 but she would not tell us3 of this thing we are witnesses4 #ac3da4 ,the multitude believed them1 as being the elders1 and the judges of the people1 and they condemned her to death4 #ac3db4 ,then ,susanna cried out with a loud voice1 and said3 ,o eternal ,god1 who knowest hidden things1 who knowest all things before they come to pass1 #ac3dc4 ,thou knowest that they have borne false witness against me3 and behold ,i must die1 whereas ,i have done none of these things1 which these men have maliciously forged against me4 #ac3dd4 ,and the ,lord heard her voice4 #ac3de4 ,and when she was led to be put to death1 the ,lord raised up the holy spirit of a young boy1 whose name was ,daniel3 #ac3df4 ,and he cried out with a loud voice3 ,i am clear from the blood of this woman4 #ac3dg4 ,then all the people turning themselves towards him1 said3 ,what meaneth this word that thou hast spoken8 #ac3dh4 ,but he standing in the midst of them1 said3 ,are ye so foolish1 ye children of ,israel1 that without examination or knowledge of the truth1 you have condemned a daughter of ,israel8 #ac3di4 ,return to judgment1 for they have borne false witness against her4 #ac3ej4 ,so all the people turned again in haste1 and the old men said to him3 ,come1 and sit thou down among us1 and shew it us3 seeing ,god hath given thee the honour of old age4 #ac3ea4 ,and ,daniel said to the people3 ,separate these two far from one another1 and ,i will examine them4 #ac3eb4 ,so when they were put asunder one from the other1 he called one of them1 and said to him3 ,o thou that art grown old in evil days1 now are thy sins come out1 which thou hast committed before3 #ac3ec4 ,in judging unjust judgments1 oppressing the innocent1 and letting the guilty to go free1 whereas the ,lord saith3 ,the innocent and the just thou shalt not kill4 #ac3ed4 ,now then if thou sawest her1 tell me under what tree thou sawest them conversing together3 ,he said3 ,under a mastic tree4 #ac3ee4 ,and ,daniel said3 ,well hast thou lied against thy own head3 for behold the angel of ,god having received the sentence of him1 shall cut thee in two4 #ac3ef4 ,and having put him aside1 he commanded that the other should come1 and he said to him3 ,o thou seed of ,chanaan1 and not of ,juda1 beauty hath deceived thee1 and lust hath perverted thy heart3 #ac3eg4 ,thus did you do to the daughters of ,israel1 and they for fear conversed with you3 but a daughter of ,juda would not abide your wickedness4 #ac3eh4 ,now1 therefore1 tell me1 under what tree didst thou take them conversing together4 ,and he answered3 ,under a holm tree4 #ac3ei4 ,and ,daniel said to him3 ,well hast thou also lied against thy own head3 for the angel of the ,lord waiteth with a sword to cut thee in two1 and to destroy you4 #ac3fj4 ,with that all the assembly cried out with a loud voice1 and they blessed ,god1 who saveth them that trust in him4 #ac3fa4 ,and they rose up against the two elders1 7for ,daniel had convicted them of false witness by their own mouth7 and they did to them as they had maliciously dealt against their neighbour1 #ac3fb4 ,to fulfil the law of ,moses3 and they put them to death1 and innocent blood was saved in that day4 #ac3fc4 ,but ,helcias1 and his wife1 praised ,god1 for their daughter1 ,susanna1 with ,joakim1 her husband1 and all her kindred1 because there was no dishonesty found in her4 #ac3fd4 ,and ,daniel became great in the sight of the people from that day1 and thence forward4 #ac3fe4 ,and king ,astyages was gathered to his fathers2 and ,cyrus1 the ,persian1 received his kingdom4 ,daniel ,chapter #ad ,the history of ,bel1 and of the great serpent worshipped by the ,babylonians4 #ad3a4 ,and ,daniel was the king's guest1 and was honoured above all his friends4 ,the king's guest444 ,it seems most probable1 that the king here spoken of was ,evilmerodach1 the son and successor of ,nabuchodonosor1 and a great favourer of the ,jews4 #ad3b4 ,now the ,babylonians had an idol called ,bel3 and there was spent upon him every day twelve great measures of fine flour1 and forty sheep1 and six vessels of wine4 #ad3c4 ,the king also worshipped him1 and went every day to adore him3 but ,daniel adored his ,god4 ,and the king said to him3 ,why dost thou not adore ,bel8 #ad3d4 ,and he answered1 and said to him3 ,because ,i do not worship idols made with hands1 but the living ,god1 that created heaven and earth1 and hath power over all flesh4 #ad3e4 ,and the king said to him3 ,doth not ,bel seem to thee to be a living god8 ,seest thou not how much he eateth and drinketh every day8 #ad3f4 ,then ,daniel smiled1 and said3 ,o king1 be not deceived3 for this is but clay within1 and brass without1 neither hath he eaten at any time4 #ad3g4 ,and the king being angry1 called for his priests1 and said to them3 ,if you tell me not who it is that eateth up these expenses1 you shall die4 #ad3h4 ,but if you can shew that ,bel eateth these things1 ,daniel shall die1 because he hath blasphemed against ,bel4 ,and ,daniel said to the king3 ,be it done according to thy word4 #ad3i4 ,now the priests of ,bel were seventy1 beside their wives1 and little ones1 and children4 ,and the king went with ,daniel into the temple of ,bel4 #ad3aj4 ,and the priests of ,bel said3 ,behold1 we go out3 and do thou1 ,o king1 set on the meats1 and make ready the wine1 and shut the door fast1 and seal it with thy own ring3 #ad3aa4 ,and when thou comest in the morning1 if thou findest not that ,bel hath eaten up all1 we will suffer death1 or else ,daniel1 that hath lied against us4 #ad3ab4 ,and they little regarded it1 because they had made under the table a secret entrance1 and they always came in by it1 and consumed those things4 #ad3ac4 ,so it came to pass after they were gone out1 the king set the meats before ,bel3 and ,daniel commanded his servants1 and they brought ashes1 and he sifted them all over the temple before the king3 and going forth1 they shut the door1 and having sealed it with the king's ring1 they departed4 #ad3ad4 ,but the priests went in by night1 according to their custom1 with their wives1 and their children3 and they eat and drank up all4 #ad3ae4 ,and the king arose early in the morning1 and ,daniel with him4 #ad3af4 ,and the king said3 ,are the seals whole1 ,daniel8 ,and he answered3 ,they are whole1 ,o king4 #ad3ag4 ,and as soon as he had opened the door1 the king looked upon the table1 and cried out with a loud voice3 ,great art thou1 ,o ,bel1 and there is not any deceit with thee4 #ad3ah4 ,and ,daniel laughed3 and he held the king1 that he should not go in3 and he said3 ,behold the pavement1 mark whose footsteps these are4 #ad3ai4 ,and the king said3 ,i see the footsteps of men1 and women1 and children4 ,and the king was angry4 #ad3bj4 ,then he took the priests1 and their wives1 and their children3 and they shewed him the private doors by which they came in1 and consumed the things that were on the table4 #ad3ba4 ,the king1 therefore1 put them to death1 and delivered ,bel into the power of ,daniel3 who destroyed him and his temple4 #ad3bb4 ,and there was a great dragon in that place1 and the ,babylonians worshipped him4 #ad3bc4 ,and the king said to ,daniel3 ,behold1 thou canst not say now1 that this is not a living god3 adore him1 therefore4 #ad3bd4 ,and ,daniel said3 ,i adore the ,lord1 my ,god3 for he is the living ,god3 but that is no living god4 #ad3be4 ,but give me leave1 ,o king1 and ,i will kill this dragon without sword or club4 ,and the king said1 ,i give thee leave4 #ad3bf4 ,then ,daniel took pitch1 and fat1 and hair1 and boiled them together3 and he made lumps1 and put them into the dragon's mouth1 and the dragon burst asunder4 ,and he said3 ,behold him whom you worship4 #ad3bg4 ,and when the ,babylonians had heard this1 they took great indignation3 and being gathered together against the king1 they said3 ,the king is become a ,jew4 ,he hath destroyed ,bel1 he hath killed the dragon1 and he hath put the priests to death4 #ad3bh4 ,and they came to the king1 and said3 ,deliver us ,daniel1 or else we will destroy thee and thy house4 #ad3bi4 ,and the king saw that they pressed upon him violently3 and being constrained by necessity3 he delivered ,daniel to them4 #ad3cj4 ,and they cast him into the den of lions1 and he was there six days4 ,the den of lions444 ,daniel was twice cast into the den of lions2 one under ,darius the ,mede1 because he had transgressed the king's edict1 by praying three times a day3 and another time under ,evilmerodach by a sedition of the people4 ,this time he remained six days in the lions' den2 the other time only one night4 #ad3ca4 ,and in the den there were seven lions1 and they had given to them two carcasses every day1 and two sheep3 but then they were not given unto them1 that they might devour ,daniel4 #ad3cb4 ,now there was in ,judea a prophet called ,habacuc1 and he had boiled pottage1 and had broken bread in a bowl3 and was going into the field1 to carry it to the reapers4 ,habacuc444 ,the same1 as some think whose prophecy is found among the lesser prophets but others believe him to be different4 #ad3cc4 ,and the angel of the ,lord said to ,habacuc3 ,carry the dinner which thou hast into ,babylon1 to ,daniel1 who is in the lions' den4 #ad3cd4 ,and ,habacuc said3 ,lord1 ,i never saw ,babylon1 nor do ,i know the den4 #ad3ce4 ,and the angel of the ,lord took him by the top of his head1 and carried him by the hair of his head1 and set him in ,babylon1 over the den1 in the force of his spirit4 #ad3cf4 ,and ,habacuc cried1 saying3 ,o ,daniel1 thou servant of ,god1 take the dinner that ,god hath sent thee4 #ad3cg4 ,and ,daniel said1 ,thou hast remembered me1 ,o ,god1 and thou hast not forsaken them that love thee4 #ad3ch4 ,and ,daniel arose1 and eat4 ,and the angel of the ,lord presently set ,habacuc again in his own place4 #ad3ci4 ,and upon the seventh day the king came to bewail ,daniel3 and he came to the den1 and looked in1 and behold ,daniel was sitting in the midst of the lions4 #ad3dj4 ,and the king cried out with a loud voice1 saying3 ,great art thou1 ,o ,lord1 the ,god of ,daniel4 ,and he drew him out of the lions' den4 #ad3da4 ,but those that had been the cause of his destruction1 he cast into the den1 and they were devoured in a moment before him4 #ad3db4 ,then the king said3 ,let all the inhabitants of the whole earth fear the ,god of ,daniel3 for he is the ,saviour1 working signs1 and wonders in the earth3 who hath delivered ,daniel out of the lions' den4
