prophet ,,jeremias1 and a sharer in his labours and persecutions3 which is the reason why the ancient fathers have considered this book as a part of the prophecy of ,,jeremias1 and have usually quoted it under his name4 ,baruch ,chapter #a ,the ,jews of ,babylon send the book of ,baruch with money to ,jerusalem1 requesting their brethren there to offer sacrifice1 and to pray for the king and for them1 acknowledging their manifold sins4 #a3a4 ,and these are the words of the book1 which ,baruch the son of ,nerias1 the son of ,maasias1 the son of ,sedecias1 the son of ,sedei1 the son ,helcias1 wrote in ,babylonia4 #a3b4 ,in the fifth year1 in the seventh day of the month1 at the time that the ,chaldeans took ,jerusalem1 and burnt it with fire4 #a3c4 ,and ,baruch read the words of this book in the hearing of ,jechonias the son of ,joakim king of ,juda1 and in the hearing of all the people that came to hear the book4 #a3d4 ,and in the hearing of the nobles1 the sons of the kings1 and in the hearing of the ancients1 and in the hearing of the people1 from the least even to the greatest of them that dwelt in ,babylonia1 by the river ,sedi4 #a3e4 ,and when they heard it they wept1 and fasted1 and prayed before the ,lord4 #a3f4 ,and they made a collection of money according to every man's power4 #a3g4 ,and they sent it to ,jerusalem to ,joakim the priest1 the son of ,helcias1 the son of ,salom1 and to the priests1 and to all the people1 that were found with him in ,jerusalem3 #a3h4 ,at the time when he received the vessels of the temple of the ,lord1 which had been taken away out of the temple1 to return them into the land of ,juda the tenth day of the month ,sivan1 the silver vessels1 which ,sedecias the son of ,josias king of ,juda had made1 #a3i4 ,after that ,nabuchodonosor the king of ,babylon had carried away ,jechonias1 and the princes1 and all the powerful men1 and the people of the land from ,jerusalem1 and brought them bound to ,babylon4 #a3aj4 ,and they said3 ,behold we have sent you money1 buy with it holocausts1 and frankincense1 and make meat offerings1 and offerings for sin at the altar of the ,lord our ,god3 #a3aa4 ,and pray ye for the life of ,nabuchodonosor the king of ,babylon1 and for the life of ,balthasar his son1 that their days may be upon earth as the days of heaven3 #a3ab4 ,and that the ,lord may give us strength1 and enlighten our eyes1 that we may live under the shadow of ,nabuchodonosor the king of ,babylon1 and under the shadow of ,balthasar his son1 and may serve them many days1 and may find favour in their sight4 #a3ac4 ,and pray ye for us to the ,lord our ,god3 for we have sinned against the ,lord our ,god1 and his wrath is not turned away from us even to this day4 #a3ad4 ,and read ye this book1 which we have sent to you to be read in the temple of the ,lord1 on feasts1 and proper days4 #a3ae4 ,and you shall say3 ,to the ,lord our ,god belongeth justice1 but to us confusion of our face3 as it is come to pass at this day to all ,juda1 and to the inhabitants of ,jerusalem1 #a3af4 ,to our kings1 and to our princes1 and to our priests1 and to our prophets1 and to our fathers4 #a3ag4 ,we have sinned before the ,lord our ,god1 and have not believed him1 nor put our trust in him3 #a3ah4 ,and we were not obedient to him1 and we have not hearkened to the voice of the ,lord our ,god1 to walk in his commandments which he hath given us4 #a3ai4 ,from the day that he brought our fathers out of the land of ,egypt1 even to this day1 we were disobedient to the ,lord our ,god3 and going astray we turned away from hearing his voice4 #a3bj4 ,and many evils have cleaved to us1 and the curses which the ,lord foretold by ,moses his servant3 who brought our fathers out of the land of ,egypt1 to give us a land flowing with milk and honey1 as at this day4 #a3ba4 ,and we have not hearkened to the voice of the ,lord our ,god according to all the words of the prophets whom he sent to us3 #a3bb4 ,and we have gone away every man after the inclinations of his own wicked heart1 to serve strange gods1 and to do evil in the sight of the ,lord our ,god4 ,baruch ,chapter #b ,a further confession of the sins of the people1 and of the justice of ,god4 #b3a4 ,wherefore the ,lord our ,god hath made good his word1 that he spoke to us1 and to our judges that have judged ,israel1 and to our kings1 and to our princes1 and to all ,israel and ,juda3 #b3b4 ,that the ,lord would bring upon us great evils1 such as never happened under heaven1 as they have come to pass in ,jerusalem1 according to the things that are written in the law of ,moses3 #b3c4 ,that a man should eat the flesh of his own son1 and the flesh of his own daughter4 #b3d4 ,and he hath delivered them up to be under the hand of all the kings that are round about us1 to be a reproach1 and desolation among all the people1 among whom the ,lord hath scattered us4 #b3e4 ,and we are brought under1 and are not uppermost3 because we have sinned against the ,lord our ,god1 by not obeying his voice4 #b3f4 ,to the ,lord our ,god belongeth justice3 but to us1 and to our fathers confusion of face1 as at this day4 #b3g4 ,for the ,lord hath pronounced against us all these evils that are come upon us3 #b3h4 ,and we have not entreated the face of the ,lord our ,god1 that we might return every one of us from our most wicked ways4 #b3i4 ,and the ,lord hath watched over us for evil1 and hath brought it upon us3 for the ,lord is just in all his works which he hath commanded us3 #b3aj4 ,and we have not hearkened to his voice to walk in the commandments of the ,lord which he hath set before us4 #b3aa4 ,and now1 ,o ,lord ,god of ,israel1 who hast brought thy people out of the land of ,egypt with a strong hand1 and with signs1 and with wonders1 and with thy great power1 and with a mighty arm1 and hast made thee a name as at this day1 #b3ab4 ,we have sinned1 we have done wickedly1 we have acted unjustly1 ,o ,lord our ,god1 against all thy justices4 #b3ac4 ,let thy wrath be turned away from us3 for we are left a few among the nations where thou hast scattered us4 #b3ad4 ,hear1 ,o ,lord1 our prayers1 and our petitions1 and deliver us for thy own sake3 and grant that we may find favour in the sight of them that have led us away3 #b3ae4 ,that all the earth may know that thou art the ,lord our ,god1 and that thy name is called upon ,israel1 and upon his posterity4 #b3af4 ,look down upon us1 ,o ,lord1 from thy holy house1 and incline thy ear1 and hear us4 #b3ag4 ,open thy eyes1 and behold3 for the dead that are in hell1 whose spirit is taken away from their bowels1 shall not give glory and justice to the ,lord3 ,justice1 etc444 ,they that are in hell shall not give justice to ,god2 that is1 they shall not acknowledge and glorify his justice as penitent sinners do upon earth4 #b3ah4 ,but the soul that is sorrowful for the greatness of evil she hath done1 and goeth bowed down1 and feeble1 and the eyes that fail1 and the hungry soul giveth glory and justice to thee the ,lord4 #b3ai4 ,for it is not for the justices of our fathers that we pour out our prayers1 and beg mercy in thy sight1 ,o ,lord our ,god3 #b3bj4 ,but because thou hast sent out thy wrath1 and thy indignation upon us1 as thou hast spoken by the hand of thy servants the prophets1 saying3 #b3ba4 ,thus saith the ,lord3 ,bow down your shoulder1 and your neck1 and serve the king of ,babylon3 and you shall remain in the land which ,i have given to your fathers4 #b3bb4 ,but if you will not hearken to the voice of the ,lord your ,god1 to serve the king of ,babylon3 ,i will cause you to depart out of the cities of ,juda1 and from without ,jerusalem4 #b3bc4 ,and ,i will take away from you the voice of mirth1 and the voice of joy1 and the voice of the bridegroom1 and the voice of the bride1 and all the land shall be without any footstep of inhabitants4 #b3bd4 ,and they hearkened not to thy voice1 to serve the king of ,babylon3 and thou hast made good thy words1 which thou spokest by the hands of thy servants the prophets1 that the bones of our kings1 and the bones of our fathers should be removed out of their place3 #b3be4 ,and behold they are cast out to the heat of the sun1 and to the frost of the night3 and they have died in grievous pains1 by famine1 and by the sword1 and in banishment4 #b3bf4 ,and thou hast made the temple1 in which thy name was called upon1 as it is at this day1 for the iniquity of the house of ,israel1 and the house of ,juda4 #b3bg4 ,and thou hast dealt with us1 ,o ,lord our ,god1 according to all thy goodness1 and according to all that great mercy of thine3 #b3bh4 ,as thou spokest by the hand of thy servant ,moses1 in the day when thou didst command him to write thy law before the children of ,israel1 #b3bi4 ,saying3 ,if you will not hear my voice1 this great multitude shall be turned into a very small number among the nations1 where ,i will scatter them3 #b3cj4 ,for ,i know that the people will not hear me1 for they are a people of a stiff neck3 but they shall turn to their heart in the land of their captivity3 #b3ca4 ,and they shall know that ,i am the ,lord their ,god3 and ,i will give them a heart1 and they shall understand3 and ears1 and they shall hear4 #b3cb4 ,and they shall praise me in the land of their captivity1 and shall be mindful of my name4 #b3cc4 ,and they shall turn away themselves from their stiff neck1 and from their wicked deeds3 for they shall remember the way of their fathers1 that sinned against me4 #b3cd4 ,and ,i will bring them back again into the land which ,i promised with an oath to their fathers1 ,abraham1 ,isaac1 and ,jacob1 and they shall be masters thereof3 and ,i will multiply them1 and they shall not be diminished4 #b3ce4 ,and ,i will make with them another covenant that shall be everlasting1 to be their ,god1 and they shall be my people3 and ,i will no more remove my people1 the children of ,israel1 out of the land that ,i have given them4 ,baruch ,chapter #c ,they pray for mercy1 acknowledging that they are justly punished for forsaking true wisdom4 ,a prophecy of ,christ4 #c3a4 ,and now1 ,o ,lord ,almighty1 the ,god of ,israel1 the soul in anguish1 and the troubled spirit crieth to thee3 #c3b4 ,hear1 ,o ,lord1 and have mercy1 for thou art a merciful ,god1 and have pity on us3 for we have sinned before thee4 #c3c4 ,for thou remainest for ever1 and shall we perish everlastingly8 #c3d4 ,o ,lord ,almighty1 the ,god of ,israel1 hear now the prayer of the dead of ,israel1 and of their children1 that have sinned before thee1 and have not hearkened to the voice of the ,lord their ,god1 wherefore evils have cleaved fast to us4 #c3e4 ,remember not the iniquities of our fathers1 but think upon thy hand1 and upon thy name at this time3 #c3f4 ,for thou art the ,lord our ,god1 and we will praise thee1 ,o ,lord3 #c3g4 ,because for this end thou hast put thy fear in our hearts1 to the intent that we should call upon thy name1 and praise thee in our captivity1 for we are converted from the iniquity of our fathers1 who sinned before thee4 #c3h4 ,and behold we are at this day in our captivity1 whereby thou hast scattered us to be a reproach1 and a curse1 and an offence1 according to all the iniquities of our fathers1 who departed from thee1 ,o ,lord our ,god4 #c3i4 ,hear1 ,o ,israel1 the commandments of life3 give ear1 that thou mayst learn wisdom4 #c3aj4 ,how happeneth it1 ,o ,israel1 that thou art in thy enemies' land8 #c3aa4 ,thou art grown old in a strange country1 thou art defiled with the dead3 thou art counted with them that go down into hell4 #c3ab4 ,thou hast forsaken the fountain of wisdom3 #c3ac4 ,for if thou hadst walked in the way of ,god1 thou hadst surely dwelt in peace for ever4 #c3ad4 ,learn where is wisdom1 where is strength1 where is understanding3 that thou mayst know also where is length of days and life1 where is the light of the eyes1 and peace4 #c3ae4 ,who hath found out her place8 and who hath gone in to her treasures8 #c3af4 ,where are the princes of the nations1 and they that rule over the beasts that are upon the earth8 #c3ag4 ,that take their diversion with the birds of the air4 #c3ah4 ,that hoard up silver and gold1 wherein men trust1 and there is no end of their getting8 who work in silver and are solicitous1 and their works are unsearchable4 #c3ai4 ,they are cut off1 and are gone down to hell1 and others are risen up in their place4 #c3bj4 ,young men have seen the light1 and dwelt upon the earth3 but the way of knowledge they have not known1 #c3ba4 ,nor have they understood the paths thereof1 neither have their children received it1 it is far from their face4 #c3bb4 ,it hath not been heard of in the land of ,chanaan1 neither hath it been seen in ,theman4 ,theman444 ,the capital city of ,edom4 #c3bc4 ,the children of ,agar also1 that search after the wisdom that is of the earth1 the merchants of ,merrha1 and of ,theman1 and the tellers of fables1 and searchers of prudence and understanding3 but the way of wisdom they have not known1 neither have they remembered her paths4 ,agar444 ,the mother of the ,ismaelites4 #c3bd4 ,o ,israel1 how great is the house of ,god1 and how vast is the place of his possession6 #c3be4 ,it is great1 and hath no end3 it is high and immense4 #c3bf4 ,there were the giants1 those renowned men that were from the beginning1 of great stature1 expert in war4 #c3bg4 ,the ,lord chose not them1 neither did they find the way of knowledge3 therefore did they perish4 #c3bh4 ,and because they had not wisdom1 they perished through their folly4 #c3bi4 ,who hath gone up into heaven1 and taken her1 and brought her down from the clouds8 #c3cj4 ,who hath passed over the sea1 and found her1 and brought her preferably to chosen gold8 #c3ca4 ,there is none that is able to know her ways1 nor that can search out her paths3 #c3cb4 ,but he that knoweth all things1 knoweth her1 and hath found her out with his understanding3 he that prepared the earth for evermore1 and filled it with cattle and fourfooted beasts3 #c3cc4 ,he that sendeth forth the light1 and it goeth3 and hath called it1 and it obeyeth him with trembling4 #c3cd4 ,and the stars have given light in their watches1 and rejoiced3 #c3ce4 ,they were called1 and they said3 ,here we are3 and with cheerfulness they have shined forth to him that made them4 #c3cf4 ,this is our ,god1 and there shall no other be accounted of in comparison of him4 #c3cg4 ,he found out all the way of knowledge1 and gave it to ,jacob his servant1 and to ,israel his beloved4 #c3ch4 ,afterwards he was seen upon earth1 and conversed with men4 ,was seen upon earth1 etc444 viz41 by the mystery of the incarnation1 by means of which the son of ,god came visibly amongst us1 and conversed with men4 ,the prophets often speak of things to come as if they were past1 to express the certainty of the event of the things foretold4 ,baruch ,chapter #d ,the prophet exhorts to the keeping of the law of wisdom1 and encourages the people to be patient1 and to hope for their deliverance4 #d3a4 ,this is the book of the commandments of ,god1 and the law1 that is for ever3 all they that keep it1 shall come to life3 but they that have forsaken it1 to death4 #d3b4 ,return1 ,o ,jacob1 and take hold of it1 walk in the way by its brightness1 in the presence of the light thereof4 #d3c4 ,give not thy honour to another1 nor thy dignity to a strange nation4 #d3d4 ,we are happy1 ,o ,israel3 because the things that are pleasing to ,god1 are made known to us4 #d3e4 ,be of good comfort1 ,o people of ,god1 the memorial of ,israel3 #d3f4 ,you have been sold to the ,gentiles1 not for your destruction3 but because you provoked ,god to wrath1 you are delivered to your adversaries4 #d3g4 ,for you have provoked him who made you1 the eternal ,god1 offering sacrifice to devils1 and not to ,god4 #d3h4 ,for you have forgotten ,god1 who brought you up1 and you have grieved ,jerusalem that nursed you4 #d3i4 ,for she saw the wrath of ,god coming upon you1 and she said3 ,give ear1 all you that dwell near ,sion1 for ,god hath brought upon me great mourning3 #d3aj4 ,for ,i have seen the captivity of my people1 of my sons1 and my daughters1 which the ,eternal hath brought upon them4 #d3aa4 ,for ,i nourished them with joy3 but ,i sent them away with weeping and mourning4 #d3ab4 ,let no man rejoice over me1 a widow1 and desolate3 ,i am forsaken of many for the sins of my children1 because they departed from the law of ,god4 #d3ac4 ,and they have not known his justices1 nor walked by the ways of ,god's commandments1 neither have they entered by the paths of his truth and justice4 #d3ad4 ,let them that dwell about ,sion come1 and remember the captivity of my sons and daughters1 which the ,eternal hath brought upon them4 #d3ae4 ,for he hath brought a nation upon them from afar1 a wicked nation1 and of a strange tongue3 #d3af4 ,who have neither reverenced the ancient1 nor pitied children1 and have carried away the beloved of the widow1 and have left me all alone without children4 #d3ag4 ,but as for me1 what help can ,i give you8 #d3ah4 ,but he that hath brought the evils upon you1 he will deliver you out of the hands of your enemies4 #d3ai4 ,go your way1 my children1 go your way3 for ,i am left alone4 #d3bj4 ,i have put off the robe of peace1 and have put upon me the sackcloth of supplication1 and ,i will cry to the most ,high in my days4 #d3ba4 ,be of good comfort1 my children1 cry to the ,lord1 and he will deliver you out of the hand of the princes your enemies4 #d3bb4 ,for my hope is in the ,eternal that he will save you3 and joy is come upon me from the ,holy ,one1 because of the mercy which shall come to you from our everlasting ,saviour4 #d3bc4 ,for ,i sent you forth with mourning and weeping3 but the ,lord will bring you back to me with joy and gladness for ever4 #d3bd4 ,for as the neighbours of ,sion have now seen your captivity from ,god3 so shall they also shortly see your salvation from ,god1 which shall come upon you with great honour1 and everlasting glory4 #d3be4 ,my children1 suffer patiently the wrath that is come upon you3 for thy enemy hath persecuted thee1 but thou shalt quickly see his destruction3 and thou shalt get up upon his neck4 #d3bf4 ,my delicate ones have walked rough ways1 for they were taken away as a flock made a prey by the enemies4 #d3bg4 ,be of good comfort1 my children1 and cry to the ,lord3 for you shall be remembered by him that hath led you away4 #d3bh4 ,for as it was your mind to go astray from ,god2 so when you return again you shall seek him ten times as much4 #d3bi4 ,for he that hath brought evils upon you1 shall bring you everlasting joy again with your salvation4 #d3cj4 ,be of good heart1 ,o ,jerusalem3 for he exhorteth thee1 that named thee4 #d3ca4 ,the wicked that have afflicted thee1 shall perish3 and they that have rejoiced at thy ruin1 shall be punished4 #d3cb4 ,the cities which thy children have served1 shall be punished3 and she that received thy sons4 ,she that received1 etc444 viz41 ,babylon4 #d3cc4 ,for as she rejoiced at thy ruin1 and was glad of thy fall3 so shall she be grieved for her own desolation4 #d3cd4 ,and the joy of her multitude shall be cut off3 and her gladness shall be turned to mourning4 #d3ce4 ,for fire shall come upon her from the ,eternal1 long to endure1 and she shall be inhabited by devils for a great time4 #d3cf4 ,look about thee1 ,o ,jerusalem1 towards the east1 and behold the joy that cometh to thee from ,god4 #d3cg4 ,for behold thy children come1 whom thou sentest away scattered1 they come gathered together from the east even to the west1 at the word of the ,holy ,one rejoicing for the honour of ,god4 ,baruch ,chapter #e ,jerusalem is invited to rejoice and behold the return of her children out of their captivity4 #e3a4 ,put off1 ,o ,jerusalem1 the garment of thy mourning1 and affliction3 and put on the beauty1 and honour of that everlasting glory which thou hast from ,god4 #e3b4 ,god will clothe thee with the double garment of justice1 and will set a crown on thy head of everlasting honour4 #e3c4 ,for ,god will shew his brightness in thee1 to every one under heaven4 #e3d4 ,for thy name shall be named to thee by ,god for ever3 the peace of justice1 and honour of piety4 #e3e4 ,arise1 ,o ,jerusalem1 and stand on high3 and look about towards the east1 and behold thy children gathered together from the rising to the setting sun1 by the word of the ,holy ,one rejoicing in the remembrance of ,god4 #e3f4 ,for they went out from thee on foot1 led by the enemies3 but the ,lord will bring them to thee exalted with honour as children of the kingdom4 #e3g4 ,for ,god hath appointed to bring down every high mountain1 and the everlasting rocks1 and to fill up the valleys to make them even with the ground3 that ,israel may walk diligently to the honour of ,god4 #e3h4 ,moreover the woods1 and every sweetsmelling tree have overshadowed ,israel by the commandment of ,god4 #e3i4 ,for ,god will bring ,israel with joy in the light of his majesty1 with mercy1 and justice1 that cometh from him4 ,baruch ,chapter #f ,the epistle of ,jeremias to the captives1 as a preservative against idolatry4 ,a copy of the epistle that ,jeremias sent to them that were to be led away captives into ,babylon1 by the king of ,babylon1 to declare to them according to what was commanded him by ,god4 #f3a4 ,for the sins that you have committed before ,god1 you shall be carried away captives into ,babylon by ,nabuchodonosor the king of ,babylon4 #f3b4 ,and when you are come into ,babylon1 you shall be there many years1 and for a long time1 even to seven generations3 and after that ,i will bring you away from thence with peace4 ,seven generations444 ,that is1 seventy years4 #f3c4 ,but now1 you shall see in ,babylon gods of gold1 and of silver1 and of stone1 and of wood borne upon shoulders1 causing fear to the ,gentiles4 #f3d4 ,beware therefore that you imitate not the doings of others1 and be afraid1 and the fear of them should seize upon you4 #f3e4 ,but when you see the multitude behind1 and before1 adoring them1 say you in your hearts3 ,thou oughtest to be adored1 ,o ,lord4 #f3f4 ,for my angel is with you3 ,and ,i myself will demand an account of your souls4 #f3g4 ,for their tongue that is polished by the craftsman1 and themselves laid over with gold and silver1 are false things1 and they cannot speak4 #f3h4 ,and as if it were for a maiden that loveth to go gay3 so do they take gold and make them up4 #f3i4 ,their gods have golden crowns upon their heads3 whereof the priests secretly convey away from them gold1 and silver1 and bestow it on themselves4 #f3aj4 ,yea and they give thereof to prostitutes1 and they dress out harlots3 and again when they receive it of the harlots1 they adorn their gods4 #f3aa4 ,and these gods cannot defend themselves from the rust1 and the moth4 #f3ab4 ,but when they have covered them with a purple garment1 they wipe their face because of the dust of the house1 which is very much among them4 #f3ac4 ,this holdeth a sceptre as a man1 as a judge of the country1 but cannot put to death one that offendeth him4 #f3ad4 ,and this hath in his hand a sword1 or an axe1 but cannot save himself from war1 or from robbers1 whereby be it known to you1 that they are not gods4 #f3ae4 ,therefore fear them not4 ,for as a vessel that a man uses when it is broken becometh useless1 even so are their gods3 #f3af4 ,when they are placed in the house1 their eyes are full of dust by the feet of them that go in4 #f3ag4 ,and as the gates are made sure on every side upon one that hath offended the king1 or like a dead man carried to the grave1 so do the priests secure the doors with bars and locks1 lest they be stripped by thieves4 #f3ah4 ,they light candles to them1 and in great number1 of which they cannot see one3 but they are like beams in the house4 #f3ai4 ,and they say that the creeping things which are of the earth1 gnaw their hearts1 while they eat them and their garments1 and they feel it not4 #f3bj4 ,their faces are black with the smoke that is made in the house4 #f3ba4 ,owls1 and swallows1 and other birds fly upon their bodies1 and upon their heads1 and cats in like manner4 #f3bb4 ,whereby you may know that they are no gods4 ,therefore fear them not4 #f3bc4 ,the gold also which they have1 is for shew1 but except a man wipe off the rust1 they will not shine3 for neither when they were molten1 did they feel it4 #f3bd4 ,men buy them at a high price1 whereas there is no breath in them4 #f3be4 ,and having not the use of feet they are carried upon shoulders1 declaring to men how vile they are4 ,be they confounded also that worship them4 #f3bf4 ,therefore if they fall to the ground1 they rise not up again of themselves1 nor if a man set them upright1 will they stand by themselves1 but their gifts shall be set before them1 as to the dead4 #f3bg4 ,the things that are sacrificed to them1 their priests sell and abuse3 in like manner also their wives take part of them1 but give nothing of it either to the sick1 or to the poor4 #f3bh4 ,the childbearing and menstruous women touch their sacrifices3 knowing1 therefore1 by these things that they are not gods1 fear them not4 #f3bi4 ,for how can they be called gods8 because women set offerings before the gods of silver1 and of gold1 and of wood3 #f3cj4 ,and priests sit in their temples1 having their garments rent1 and their heads and beards shaven1 and nothing upon their heads4 #f3ca4 ,and they roar and cry before their gods1 as men do at the feast when one is dead4 #f3cb4 ,the priests take away their garments1 and clothe their wives and their children4 #f3cc4 ,and whether it be evil that one doth unto them1 or good1 they are not able to recompense it3 neither can they set up a king1 nor put him down3 #f3cd4 ,in like manner they can neither give riches1 nor requite evil4 ,if a man make a vow to them1 and perform it not3 they cannot require it4 #f3ce4 ,they cannot deliver a man from death1 nor save the weak from the mighty4 #f3cf4 ,they cannot restore the blind man to his sight3 nor deliver a man from distress4 #f3cg4 ,they shall not pity the widow1 nor do good to the fatherless4 #f3ch4 ,their gods1 of wood1 and of stone1 and of gold1 and of silver1 are like the stones that are hewn out of the mountains3 and they that worship them shall be confounded4 #f3ci4 ,how then is it to be supposed1 or to be said1 that they are gods8 #f3dj4 ,even the ,chaldeans themselves dishonor them3 who when they here of one dumb that cannot speak1 they present him to ,bel1 entreating him1 that he may speak4 #f3da4 ,as though they could be sensible that have no motion themselves3 and they1 when they shall perceive this1 will leave them3 for their gods themselves have no sense4 #f3db4 ,the women also1 with cords about them1 sit in the ways1 burning olive-stones4 #f3dc4 ,and when any one of them1 drawn away by some passenger1 lieth with him1 she upbraideth her neighbor1 that she was not thought as worthy as herself1 nor her cord broken4 #f3dd4 ,but all things that are done about them1 are false3 how is it then to be thought1 or to be said1 that they are gods8 #f3de4 ,and they are made by workmen1 and by goldsmiths4 ,they shall be nothing else but what the priests will have them to be4 #f3df4 ,for the artificers themselves that make them1 are of no long continuance4 ,can those things then that are made by them1 be gods8 #f3dg4 ,but they have left false things and reproach to them that come after4 #f3dh4 ,for when war cometh upon them1 or evils3 the priests consult with themselves1 where they may hide themselves with them4 #f3di4 ,how then can they be thought to be gods1 that can neither deliver themselves from war1 nor save themselves from evils8 #f3ej4 ,for seeing they are but of wood1 and laid over with gold1 and with silver1 it shall be known hereafter that they are false things1 by all nations1 and kings3 and it shall be manifest that they are no gods1 but the work of men's hands1 and that there is no work of ,god in them4 #f3ea4 ,whence1 therefore1 is it known that they are not gods1 but the work of men's hands1 and no work of ,god is in them8 #f3eb4 ,they cannot set up a king over the land1 nor give rain to men4 #f3ec4 ,they determine no causes1 nor deliver countries from oppression3 because they can do nothing1 and are as daws between heaven and earth4 #f3ed4 ,for when fire shall fall upon the house of these gods of wood1 and of silver1 and of gold1 their priests indeed will flee away1 and be saved3 but they themselves shall be burnt in the midst like beams4 #f3ee4 ,and they cannot withstand a king and war4 ,how then can it be supposed1 or admitted1 that they are gods8 #f3ef4 ,neither are these gods of wood1 and of stone1 and laid over with gold1 and with silver1 able to deliver themselves from thieves or robbers3 they that are stronger than them1 ,they that are stronger than them444 ,that is1 robbers and thieves are stronger than these idols1 being things without life or motion4 #f3eg4 ,shall take from them the gold1 and silver1 and the raiment wherewith they are clothed1 and shall go their way1 neither shall they help themselves4 #f3eh4 ,therefore it is better to be a king that sheweth his power3 or else a profitable vessel in the house1 with which the owner thereof will be well satisfied3 or a door in the house1 to keep things safe that are therein1 than such false gods4 #f3ei4 ,the sun1 and the moon1 and the stars being bright1 and sent forth for profitable uses1 are obedient4 #f3fj4 ,in like manner the lightning1 when it breaketh forth1 is easy to be seen3 and after the same manner the wind bloweth in every country4 #f3fa4 ,and the clouds1 when ,god commandeth them to go over the whole world1 do that which is commanded them4 #f3fb4 ,the fire also being sent from above to consume mountains1 and woods1 doth as it is commanded4 ,but these neither in shew1 nor in power1 are alike to any one of them4 #f3fc4 ,wherefore it is neither to be thought1 nor to be said1 that they are gods3 since they are neither able to judge causes1 nor to do any good to men4 #f3fd4 ,knowing1 therefore1 that they are not gods1 fear them not4 #f3fe4 ,for neither can they curse kings1 nor bless them4 #f3ff4 ,neither do they shew signs in the heaven to the nations1 nor shine as the sun1 nor give light as the moon4 #f3fg4 ,beasts are better than they1 which can fly under a covert1 and help themselves4 #f3fh4 ,therefore there is no manner of appearance that they are gods3 so fear them not4 #f3fi4 ,for as a scarecrow in a garden of cucumbers keepeth nothing1 so are their gods of wood1 and of silver1 and laid over with gold4 #f3gj4 ,they are no better than a white thorn in a garden1 upon which every bird sitteth4 ,in like manner also their gods of wood1 and laid over with gold1 and with silver1 are like to a dead body cast forth in the dark4 #f3ga4 ,by the purple also and the scarlet which are motheaten upon them1 you shall know that they are not gods4 ,and they themselves at last are consumed1 and shall be a reproach in the country4 #f3gb4 ,better1 therefore1 is the just man that hath no idols3 for he shall be far from reproach4
