it gives admirable lessons of all virtues4 ,the author was ,jesus the son of ,sirach of ,jerusalem1 who flourished about two hundred years before ,christ4 ,as it was written after the time of ,esdras1 it is not in the ,jewish canon2 but is received as canonical and divine by the ,catholic ,church1 instructed by apostolical tradition1 and directed by the spirit of ,god4 ,it was first written in the ,hebrew1 but afterwards translated into ,greek1 by another ,jesus1 the grandson of the author1 whose prologue to this book is the following3 ,,the ,,prologue ,the knowledge of many and great things hath been shewn us by the law1 and the prophets1 and others that have followed them3 for which things ,israel is to be commended for doctrine and wisdom1 because not only they that speak must needs be skilful1 but strangers also1 both speaking and writing1 may by their means become most learned4 ,my grandfather ,jesus1 after he had much given himself to a diligent reading of the law1 and the prophets1 and other books1 that were delivered to us from our fathers1 had a mind also to write something himself1 pertaining to doctrine and wisdom2 that such as are desirous to learn1 and are made knowing in these things1 may be more and more attentive in mind1 and be strengthened to live according to the law4 ,i entreat you therefore to come with benevolence1 and to read with attention1 and to pardon us for those things wherein we may seem1 while we follow the image of wisdom1 to come short in the composition of words2 for the ,hebrew words have not the same force in them when translated into another tongue4 ,and not only these1 but the law also itself1 and the prophets1 and the rest of the books1 have no small difference1 when they are spoken in their own language4 ,for in the eight and thirtieth year coming into ,egypt1 when ,ptolemy ,evergetes was king1 and continuing there a long time1 ,i found there books left1 of no small nor contemptible learning4 ,therefore ,i thought it good1 and necessary for me to bestow some diligence and labour to interpret this book2 and with much watching and study in some space of time1 ,i brought the book to an end1 and set it forth for the service of them that are willing to apply their mind1 and to learn how they ought to conduct themselves1 who purpose to lead their life according to the law of the ,lord4 ,ecclesiasticus ,chapter #a ,elias the prophet stood up1 as a fire1 and his word burnt like a torch4 #dh3b4 ,he brought a famine upon them1 and they that provoked him in their envy1 were reduced to a small number1 for they could not endure the commandments of the ,lord4 #dh3c4 ,by the word of the ,lord he shut up the heaven1 and he brought down fire from heaven thrice4 #dh3d4 ,thus was ,elias magnified in his wondrous works4 ,and who can glory like to thee8 #dh3e4 ,who raisedst up a dead man from below1 from the lot of death1 by the word of the ,lord ,god4 #dh3f4 ,who broughtest down kings to destruction1 and brokest easily their power in pieces1 and the glorious from their bed4 #dh3g4 ,who heardest judgment in ,sina1 and in ,horeb the judgments of vengeance4 #dh3h4 ,who anointedst kings to penance1 and madest prophets successors after thee4 #dh3i4 ,who wast taken up in a whirlwind of fire1 in a chariot of fiery horses4 #dh3aj4 ,who art registered in the judgments of times to appease the wrath of the ,lord1 to reconcile the heart of the father to the son1 and to restore the tribes of ,jacob4 #dh3aa4 ,blessed are they that saw thee1 and were honoured with thy friendship4 #dh3ab4 ,for we live only in our life1 but after death our name shall not be such4 #dh3ac4 ,elias was indeed covered with the whirlwind1 and his spirit was filled up in ,eliseus3 in his days he feared not the prince1 and no man was more powerful than he4 #dh3ad4 ,no word could overcome him1 and after death his body prophesied4 #dh3ae4 ,in his life he did great wonders1 and in death he wrought miracles4 #dh3af4 ,for all this the people repented not1 neither did they depart from their sins till they were cast out of their land1 and were scattered through all the earth4 #dh3ag4 ,and there was left but a small people1 and a prince in the house of ,david4 #dh3ah4 ,some of these did that which pleased ,god3 but others committed many sins4 #dh3ai4 ,ezechias fortified his city1 and brought in water into the midst thereof1 and he digged a rock with iron1 and made a well for water4 #dh3bj4 ,in his days ,sennacherib came up1 and sent ,rabsaces1 and lifted up his hand against them1 and he stretched out his hand against ,sion1 and became proud through his power4 #dh3ba4 ,then their hearts and hands trembled1 and they were in pain as women in travail4 #dh3bb4 ,and they called upon the ,lord who is merciful1 and spreading their hands1 they lifted them up to heaven3 and the holy ,lord ,god quickly heard their voice4 #dh3bc4 ,he was not mindful of their sins1 neither did he deliver them up to their enemies1 but he purified them by the hand of ,isaias1 the holy prophet4 #dh3bd4 ,he overthrew the army of the ,assyrians1 and the angel of the ,lord destroyed them4 #dh3be4 ,for ,ezechias did that which pleased ,god1 and walked valiantly in the way of ,david his father1 which ,isaias1 the great prophet1 and faithful in the sight of ,god1 had commanded him4 #dh3bf4 ,in his days the sun wen backward1 and he lengthened the king's life4 #dh3bg4 ,with a great spirit he saw the things that are to come to pass at last1 and comforted the mourners in ,sion4 #dh3bh4 ,he showed what should come to pass for ever1 and secret things before they came4 ,ecclesiasticus ,chapter #di ,the praise of ,josias1 of ,jeremias1 ,ezechiel1 and the twelve prophets4 ,also of ,zorobabel1 ,jesus the son of ,josedech1 ,nehemias1 ,enoch1 ,joseph1 ,seth1 ,sem1 and ,adam4 #di3a4 ,the memory of ,josias is like the composition of a sweet smell made by the art of a perfumer3 #di3b4 ,his remembrance shall be sweet as honey in every mouth1 and as music at a banquet of wine4 #di3c4 ,he was directed by ,god unto the repentance of the nation1 and he took away the abominations of wickedness4 #di3d4 ,and he directed his heart towards the ,lord1 and in the days of sinners he strengthened godliness4 #di3e4 ,except ,david1 and ,ezechias and ,josias1 all committed sin4 #di3f4 ,for the kings of ,juda forsook the law of the most ,high1 and despised the fear of ,god4 #di3g4 ,so they gave their kingdom to others1 and their glory to a strange nation1 #di3h4 ,they burnt the chosen city of holiness1 and made the streets thereof desolate according to the prediction of ,jeremias4 #di3i4 ,for they treated him evil1 who was consecrated a prophet from his mother's womb1 to overthrow1 and pluck up1 and destroy1 and to build again1 and renew4 #di3aj4 ,it was ,ezechiel that saw the glorious vision1 which was shewn him upon the chariot of cherubims4 #di3aa4 ,for he made mention of the enemies under the figure of rain1 and of doing good to them that shewed right ways4 #di3ab4 ,and may the bones of the twelve prophets spring up out of their place3 for they strengthened ,jacob1 and redeemed themselves by strong faith4 #di3ac4 ,how shall we magnify ,zorobabel8 for he was as a signet on the right hand2 #di3ad4 ,in like manner ,jesus the son of ,josedec who in their days built the house1 and set up a holy temple to the ,lord1 prepared for everlasting glory4 #di3ae4 ,and let ,nehemias be a long time remembered1 who raised up for us our walls that were cast down1 and set up the gates and the bars1 who rebuilt our houses4 #di3af4 ,no man was born upon earth like ,henoch3 for he also was taken up from the earth4 #di3ag4 ,nor as ,joseph1 who was a man born prince of his brethren1 the support of his family1 the ruler of his brethren1 the stay of the people3 #di3ah4 ,and his bones were visited1 and after death they prophesied4 ,they prophesied444 ,that is1 by their being carried out of ,egypt they verified the prophetic prediction of ,joseph4 ,gen4 #ej4 #di3ai4 ,seth and ,sem obtained glory among men3 and above every soul ,adam in the beginning1 ,ecclesiasticus ,chapter #ej ,the praises of ,simon the high priest4 ,the conclusion4 #ej3a4 ,simon the high priest1 the son of ,onias1 who in his life propped up the house1 and in his days fortified the temple4 #ej3b4 ,by him also the height of the temple was founded1 the double building and the high walls of the temple4 #ej3c4 ,in his days the wells of water flowed out1 and they were filled as the sea above measure4 #ej3d4 ,he took care of his nation1 and delivered it from destruction4 #ej3e4 ,he prevailed to enlarge the city1 and obtained glory in his conversation with the people3 and enlarged the entrance of the house and the court4 #ej3f4 ,he shone in his days as the morning star in the midst of a cloud1 and as the moon at the full4 #ej3g4 ,and as the sun when it shineth1 so did he shine in the temple of ,god4 #ej3h4 ,and as the rainbow giving light in bright clouds1 and as the flower of roses in the days of the spring1 and as the lilies that are on the brink of the water1 and as the sweet smelling frankincense in the time of summer4 #ej3i4 ,as a bright fire1 and frankincense burning in the fire4 #ej3aj4 ,as a massy vessel of gold1 adorned with every precious stone4 #ej3aa4 ,as an olive tree budding forth1 and a cypress tree rearing itself on high1 when he put on the robe of glory1 and was clothed with the perfection of power4 ,clothed with the perfection of power444 ,that is1 with all the vestments denoting his dignity and authority4 #ej3ab4 ,when he went up to the holy altar1 he honoured the vesture of holiness4 #ej3ac4 ,and when he took the portions out of the hands of the priests1 he himself stood by the altar4 ,and about him was the ring of his brethren3 and as the cedar planted in mount ,libanus1 #ej3ad4 ,and as branches of palm trees1 they stood round about him1 and all the sons of ,aaron in their glory4 #ej3ae4 ,and the oblation of the ,lord was in their hands1 before all the congregation of ,israel3 and finishing his service1 on the altar1 to honour the offering of the most high ,king1 #ej3af4 ,he stretched forth his hand to make a libation1 and offered of the blood of the grape4 #ej3ag4 ,he poured out at the foot of the altar a divine odour to the most high ,prince4 #ej3ah4 ,then the sons of ,aaron shouted1 they sounded with beaten trumpets1 and made a great noise to be heard for a remembrance before ,god4 #ej3ai4 ,then all the people together made haste1 and fell down to the earth upon their faces1 to adore the ,lord their ,god1 and to pray to the ,almighty ,god the most ,high4 #ej3bj4 ,and the singers lifted up their voices1 and in the great house the sound of sweet melody was increased4 #ej3ba4 ,and the people in prayer besought the ,lord the most ,high1 until the worship of the ,lord was perfected1 and they had finished their office4 #ej3bb4 ,then coming down1 he lifted up his hands over all the congregation of the children of ,israel1 to give glory to ,god with his lips1 and to glory in his name3 #ej3bc4 ,and he repeated his prayer1 willing to shew the power of ,god4 #ej3bd4 ,and now pray ye to the ,god of all1 who hath done great things in all the earth1 who hath increased our days from our mother's womb1 and hath done with us according to his mercy4 #ej3be4 ,may he grant us joyfulness of heart1 and that there be peace in our days in ,israel for ever3 #ej3bf4 ,that ,israel may believe that the mercy of ,god is with us1 to deliver us in his days4 #ej3bg4 ,there are two nations which my soul abhorreth3 and the third is no nation3 which ,i hate3 ,abhorreth444 ,viz41 with a holy indignation1 as enemies of ,god and persecutors of his people4 ,such were then the ,edomites who abode in mount ,seir1 the ,philistines1 and the ,samaritans who dwelt in ,sichem1 and had their schismatical temple in that neighbourhood4 #ej3bh4 ,they that sit on mount ,seir1 and the ,philistines1 and the foolish people that dwell in ,sichem4 #ej3bi4 ,jesus the son of ,sirach1 of ,jerusalem1 hath written in this book the doctrine of wisdom and instruction1 who renewed wisdom from his heart4 #ej3cj4 ,blessed is he that is conversant in these good things and he that layeth them up in his heart1 shall be wise always4 #ej3ca4 ,for if he do them1 he shall be strong to do all things3 because the light of ,god guideth his steps4 ,ecclesiasticus ,chapter #ea ,a prayer of praise and thanksgiving4 #ea3a4 ,a prayer of ,jesus the son of ,sirach4 ,i will give glory to thee1 ,o ,lord1 ,o ,king1 and ,i will praise thee1 ,o ,god my ,saviour4 #ea3b4 ,i will give glory to thy name3 for thou hast been a helper and protector to me4 #ea3c4 ,and hast preserved my body from destruction1 from the snare of an unjust tongue1 and from the lips of them that forge lies1 and in the sight of them that stood by1 thou hast been my helper4 #ea3d4 ,and thou hast delivered me1 according to the multitude of the mercy of thy name1 from them that did roar1 prepared to devour4 #ea3e4 ,out of the hands of them that sought my life1 and from the gates of afflictions1 which compassed me about3 #ea3f4 ,from the oppression of the flame which surrounded me1 and in the midst of the fire ,i was not burnt4 #ea3g4 ,from the depth of the belly of hell1 and from an unclean tongue1 and from lying words1 from an unjust king1 and from a slanderous tongue3 #ea3h4 ,my soul shall praise the ,lord even to death4 #ea3i4 ,and my life was drawing near to hell beneath4 #ea3aj4 ,they compassed me on every side1 and there was no one that would help me4 ,i looked for the succour of men1 and there was none4 #ea3aa4 ,i remembered thy mercy1 ,o ,lord1 and thy works1 which are from the beginning of the world4 #ea3ab4 ,how thou deliverest them that wait for thee1 ,o ,lord1 and savest them out of the hands of the nations4 #ea3ac4 ,thou hast exalted my dwelling place upon the earth and ,i have prayed for death to pass away4 #ea3ad4 ,i called upon the ,lord1 the father of my ,lord1 that he would not leave me in the day of my trouble1 and in the time of the proud without help4 #ea3ae4 ,i will praise thy name continually1 and will praise it with thanksgiving1 and my prayer was heard4 #ea3af4 ,and thou hast saved me from destruction1 and hast delivered me from the evil time4 #ea3ag4 ,therefore ,i will give thanks1 and praise thee1 and bless the name of the ,lord4 #ea3ah4 ,when ,i was yet young1 before ,i wandered about1 ,i sought for wisdom openly in my prayer4 #ea3ai4 ,i prayed for her before the temple1 and unto the very end ,i will seek after her1 and she flourished as a grape soon ripe4 #ea3bj4 ,my heart delighted in her1 my foot walked in the right way1 from my youth up ,i sought after her4 #ea3ba4 ,i bowed down my ear a little1 and received her4 #ea3bb4 ,i found much wisdom in myself1 and profited much therein4 #ea3bc4 ,to him that giveth me wisdom1 will ,i give glory4 #ea3bd4 ,for ,i have determined to follow her3 ,i have had a zeal for good1 and shall not be confounded4 #ea3be4 ,my soul hath wrestled for her1 and in doing it ,i have been confirmed4 #ea3bf4 ,i stretched forth my hands on high1 and ,i bewailed my ignorance of her4 #ea3bg4 ,i directed my soul to her1 and in knowledge ,i found her4 #ea3bh4 ,i possessed my heart with her from the beginning3 therefore ,i shall not be forsaken4 #ea3bi4 ,my entrails were troubled in seeking her3 therefore shall ,i possess a good possession4 #ea3cj4 ,the ,lord hath given me a tongue for my reward3 and with it ,i will praise him4 #ea3ca4 ,draw near to me1 ye unlearned1 and gather yourselves together into the hours of discipline4 #ea3cb4 ,why are ye slow and what do you say of these things8 your souls are exceeding thirsty4 #ea3cc4 ,i have opened my mouth1 and have spoken3 buy her for yourselves without silver1 #ea3cd4 ,and submit your neck to the yoke1 and let your soul receive discipline3 for she is near at hand to be found4 #ea3ce4 ,behold with your eyes how ,i have laboured a little1 and have found much rest to myself4 #ea3cf4 ,receive ye discipline as a great sum of money1 and possess abundance of gold by her4 #ea3cg4 ,let your soul rejoice in his mercy and you shall not be confounded in his praise4 #ea3ch4 ,work your work before the time1 and he will give you your reward in his time4
