,it contains most excellent documents of great piety1 extraordinary patience1 and of a perfect resignation to the will of ,god4 ,his humble prayer was heard1 and the angel ,raphael was sent to relieve him3 he is thankful and praises the ,lord1 calling on the children of ,israel to do the same4 ,having lived to the age of one hundred and two years1 he exhorts his son and grandsons to piety1 foretells the destruction of ,ninive and the rebuilding of ,jerusalem3 he dies happily4 ,tobias ,chapter #a ,tobias's early piety3 his works of mercy1 particularly in burying the dead4 #a3a4 ,tobias of the tribe and city of ,nephtali1 7which is in the upper parts of ,galilee above ,naasson1 beyond the way that leadeth to the west1 having on the right hand the city of ,sephet17 #a3b4 ,when he was made captive in the days of ,salmanasar king of the ,assyrians1 even in his captivity1 forsook not the way of truth1 #a3c4 ,but every day gave all he could get to his brethren his fellow captives1 that were of his kindred4 #a3d4 ,and when he was younger than any of the tribe of ,nephtali1 yet did he no childish thing in his work4 #a3e4 ,moreover when all went to the golden calves which ,jeroboam king of ,israel had made1 he alone fled the company of all1 #a3f4 ,and went to ,jerusalem to the temple of the ,lord1 and there adored the ,lord ,god of ,israel1 offering faithfully all his firstfruits1 and his tithes1 #a3g4 ,so that in the third year he gave all his tithes to the proselytes1 and strangers4 #a3h4 ,these and such like things did he observe when but a boy according to the law of ,god4 #a3i4 ,but when he was a man1 he took to wife ,anna of his own tribe1 and had a son by her1 whom he called after his own name1 #a3aj4 ,and from his infancy he taught him to fear ,god1 and to abstain from all sin4 #a3aa4 ,and when by the captivity he with his wife and his son and all his tribe was come to the city of ,ninive1 #a3ab4 7,when all ate of the meats of the ,gentiles7 he kept his soul and never was defiled with their meats4 #a3ac4 ,and because he was mindful of the ,lord with all his heart1 ,god gave him favour in the sight of ,salmanasar the king4 #a3ad4 ,and he gave him leave to go whithersoever he would1 with liberty to do whatever he had a mind4 #a3ae4 ,he therefore went to all that were in captivity1 and gave them wholesome admonitions4 #a3af4 ,and when he was come to ,rages a city of the ,medes1 and had ten talents of silver of that with which he had been honoured by the king3 #a3ag4 ,and when amongst a great multitude of his kindred1 he saw ,gabelus in want1 who was one of his tribe1 taking a note of his hand he gave him the aforesaid sum of money4 #a3ah4 ,but after a long time1 ,salmanasar the king being dead1 when ,sennacherib his son1 who reigned in his place1 had a hatred for the children of ,israel3 #a3ai4 ,tobias daily went among all his kindred and comforted them1 and distributed to every one as he was able1 out of his goods3 #a3bj4 ,he fed the hungry1 and gave clothes to the naked1 and was careful to bury the dead1 and they that were slain4 #a3ba4 ,and when king ,sennacherib was come back1 fleeing from ,judea by reason of the slaughter that ,god had made about him for his blasphemy1 and being angry slew many of the children of ,israel1 ,tobias buried their bodies4 #a3bb4 ,but when it was told the king1 he commanded him to be slain1 and took away all his substance4 #a3bc4 ,but ,tobias fleeing naked away with his son and with his wife1 lay concealed1 for many loved him4 #a3bd4 ,but after forty-five days1 the king was killed by his own sons4 #a3be4 ,and ,tobias returned to his house1 and all his substance was restored to him4 ,tobias ,chapter #b ,tobias leaveth his dinner to bury the dead3 he loseth his sight by ,god's permission1 for manifestation of his patience4 #b3a4 ,but after this1 when there was a festival of the ,lord1 and a good dinner was prepared in ,tobias's house1 #b3b4 ,he said to his son3 ,go1 and bring some of our tribe that fear ,god1 to feast with us4 #b3c4 ,and when he had gone1 returning he told him1 that one of the children of ,israel lay slain in the street4 ,and he forthwith leaped up from his place at the table1 and left his dinner1 and came fasting to the body4 #b3d4 ,and taking it up carried it privately to his house1 that after the sun was down1 he might bury him cautiously4 #b3e4 ,and when he had hid the body1 he ate bread with mourning and fear1 #b3f4 ,remembering the word which the ,lord spoke by ,amos the prophet3 ,your festival days shall be turned into lamentation and mourning4 #b3g4 ,so when the sun was down1 he went and buried him4 #b3h4 ,now all his neighbours blamed him1 saying3 once already commandment was given for thee to be slain because of this matter1 and thou didst scarce escape the sentence of death1 and dost thou again bury the dead8 #b3i4 ,but ,tobias fearing ,god more than the king1 carried off the bodies of them that were slain1 and hid them in his house1 and at midnight buried them4 #b3aj4 ,now it happened one day that being wearied with burying1 he came to his house1 and cast himself down by the wall and slept1 #b3aa4 ,and as he was sleeping1 hot dung out of a swallow's nest fell upon his eyes1 and he was made blind4 #b3ab4 ,now this trial the ,lord therefore permitted to happen to him1 that an example might be given to posterity of his patience1 as also of holy ,job4 #b3ac4 ,for whereas he had always feared ,god from his infancy1 and kept his commandments1 he repined not against ,god because the evil of blindness had befallen him1 #b3ad4 ,but continued immoveable in the fear of ,god1 giving thanks to ,god all the days of his life4 #b3ae4 ,for as the kings insulted over holy ,job3 so his relations and kinsmen mocked at his life1 saying3 ,kings444 ,so ,job's three friends are here called1 because they were princes in their respective territories4 #b3af4 ,where is thy hope1 for which thou gavest alms1 and buriedst the dead8 #b3ag4 ,but ,tobias rebuked them1 saying3 ,speak not so3 #b3ah4 ,for we are the children of saints1 and look for that life which ,god will give to those that never change their faith from him4 #b3ai4 ,now ,anna his wife went daily to weaving work1 and she brought home what she could get for their living by the labour of her hands4 #b3bj4 ,whereby it came to pass1 that she received a young kid1 and brought it home3 #b3ba4 ,and when her husband heard it bleating1 he said3 ,take heed1 lest perhaps it be stolen3 restore ye it to its owners1 for it is not lawful for us either to eat or to touch any thing that cometh by theft4 #b3bb4 ,at these words his wife being angry answered3 ,it is evident the hope is come to nothing1 and thy alms now appear4 #b3bc4 ,and with these and other1 such like words she upbraided him4 ,tobias ,chapter #c ,the prayer of ,tobias1 and of ,sara1 in their several afflictions1 are heard by ,god1 and the angel ,raphael is sent to relieve them4 #c3a4 ,then ,tobias sighed1 and began to pray with tears1 #c3b4 ,saying1 ,thou art just1 ,o ,lord1 and all thy judgments are just1 and all thy ways mercy1 and truth1 and judgment3 #c3c4 ,and now1 ,o ,lord1 think of me1 and take not revenge of my sins1 neither remember my offences1 nor those of my parents4 #c3d4 ,for we have not obeyed thy commandments1 therefore are we delivered to spoil and to captivity1 and death1 and are made a fable1 and a reproach to all nations1 amongst which thou hast scattered us4 #c3e4 ,and now1 ,o ,lord1 great are thy judgments1 because we have not done according to thy precepts1 and have not walked sincerely before thee4 #c3f4 ,and now1 ,o ,lord1 do with me according to thy will1 and command my spirit to be received in peace3 for it is better for me to die1 than to live4 #c3g4 ,now it happened on the same day1 that ,sara daughter of ,raguel1 in ,rages a city of the ,medes1 received a reproach from one of her father's servant maids1 ,rages444 ,in the ,greek it is ,ecbatana1 which was also called ,rages4 ,for there were two cities in ,media of the name of ,rages4 ,raguel dwelt in one of them1 and ,gabelus in the other4 #c3h4 ,because she had been given to seven husbands and a devil named ,asmodeus had killed them1 at their first going in unto her4 #c3i4 ,so when she reproved the maid for her fault1 she answered her1 saying3 ,may we never see son1 or daughter of thee upon the earth1 thou murderer of thy husbands4 #c3aj4 ,wilt thou kill me also1 as thou hast already killed seven husbands8 ,at these words1 she went into an upper chamber of her house3 and for three days and three nights did neither eat nor drink3 #c3aa4 ,but continuing in prayer with tears besought ,god1 that he would deliver her from this reproach4 #c3ab4 ,and it came to pass on the third day when she was making an end of her prayer1 blessing the ,lord1 #c3ac4 ,she said3 ,blessed is thy name1 ,o ,god of our fathers1 who when thou hast been angry1 wilt shew mercy1 and in the time of tribulation forgivest the sins of them that call upon thee4 #c3ad4 ,to thee1 ,o ,lord1 ,i turn my face1 to thee ,i direct my eyes4 #c3ae4 ,i beg1 ,o ,lord1 that thou loose me from the bond of this reproach1 or else take me away from the earth4 #c3af4 ,thou knowest1 ,o ,lord1 that ,i never coveted a husband1 and have kept my soul clean from all lust4 #c3ag4 ,never have ,i joined myself with them that play3 neither have ,i made myself partaker with them that walk in lightness4 #c3ah4 ,but a husband ,i consented to take1 with thy fear1 not with my lust4 #c3ai4 ,and either ,i was unworthy of them1 or they perhaps were not worthy of me3 because perhaps thou hast kept me for another man1 #c3bj4 ,for thy counsel is not in man's power4 #c3ba4 ,but this every one is sure of that worshippeth thee1 that his life1 if it be under trial1 shall be crowned and if it be under tribulation1 it shall be delivered3 and if it be under correction1 it shall be allowed to come to thy mercy4 #c3bb4 ,for thou art not delighted in our being lost1 because after a storm thou makest a calm1 and after tears and weeping thou pourest in joyfulness4 #c3bc4 ,be thy name1 ,o ,god of ,israel1 blessed for ever1 #c3bd4 ,at that time the prayers of them both were heard in the sight of the glory of the most high ,god3 #c3be4 ,and the holy angel of the ,lord1 ,raphael was sent to heal them both1 whose prayers at one time were rehearsed in the sight of the ,lord4 ,tobias ,chapter #d ,tobias thinking he shall die1 giveth his son godly admonitions3 and telleth him of money he had lent to a friend4 #d3a4 ,therefore when ,tobias thought that his prayer was heard that he might die1 he called to him ,tobias his son1 #d3b4 ,and said to him3 ,hear1 my son1 the words of my mouth1 and lay them as a foundation in thy heart4 #d3c4 ,when ,god shall take my soul1 thou shalt bury my body3 and thou shalt honour thy mother all the days of her life3 #d3d4 ,for thou must be mindful what and how great perils she suffered for thee in her womb4 #d3e4 ,and when she also shall have ended the time of her life1 bury her by me4 #d3f4 ,and all the days of thy life have ,god in thy mind3 and take heed thou never consent to sin1 nor transgress the commandments of the ,lord our ,god4 #d3g4 ,give alms out of thy substance1 and turn not away thy face from any poor person3 for so it shall come to pass that the face of the ,lord shall not be turned from thee4 #d3h4 ,according to thy ability be merciful4 #d3i4 ,if thou have much give abundantly3 if thou have little1 take care even so to bestow willingly a little4 #d3aj4 ,for thus thou storest up to thyself a good reward for the day of necessity4 #d3aa4 ,for alms deliver from all sin1 and from death1 and will not suffer the soul to go into darkness4 #d3ab4 ,alms shall be a great confidence before the most high ,god1 to all them that give it4 #d3ac4 ,take heed to keep thyself1 my son1 from all fornication1 and beside thy wife never endure to know a crime4 #d3ad4 ,never suffer pride to reign in thy mind1 or in thy words3 for from it all perdition took its beginning4 #d3ae4 ,if any man hath done any work for thee1 immediately pay him his hire1 and let not the wages of thy hired servant stay with thee at all4 #d3af4 ,see thou never do to another what thou wouldst hate to have done to thee by another4 #d3ag4 ,eat thy bread with the hungry and the needy1 and with thy garments cover the naked1 #d3ah4 ,lay out thy bread1 and thy wine upon the burial of a just man1 and do not eat and drink thereof with the wicked4 #d3ai4 ,seek counsel always of a wise man4 #d3bj4 ,bless ,god at all times3 and desire of him to direct thy ways1 and that all thy counsels may abide in him4 #d3ba4 ,i tell thee also1 my son1 that ,i lent ten talents of silver1 while thou wast yet a child1 to ,gabelus1 in ,rages a city of the ,medes1 and ,i have a note of his hand with me3 #d3bb4 ,now therefore inquire how thou mayst go to him1 and receive of him the foresaid sum of money1 and restore to him the note of his hand4 #d3bc4 ,fear not1 my son3 we lead indeed a poor life1 but we shall have many good things if we fear ,god1 and depart from all sin1 and do that which is good4 ,tobias ,chapter #e ,young ,tobias seeking a guide for his journey1 the angel ,raphael1 in shape of a man1 undertaketh this office4 #e3a4 ,then ,tobias answered his father1 and said3 ,i will do all things1 father1 which thou hast commanded me4 #e3b4 ,but how ,i shall get this money1 ,i cannot tell2 he knoweth not me1 and ,i know not him3 what token shall ,i give him8 nor did ,i ever know the way which leadeth thither4 #e3c4 ,then his father answered him1 and said3 ,i have a note of his hand with me1 which when thou shalt shew him1 he will presently pay it4 #e3d4 ,but go now1 and seek thee out some faithful man1 to go with thee for his hire3 that thou mayst receive it1 while ,i yet live4 #e3e4 ,then ,tobias going forth1 found a beautiful young man1 standing girded1 and as it were ready to walk4 #e3f4 ,and not knowing that he was an angel of ,god1 he saluted him1 and said3 ,from whence art thou1 good young man8 #e3g4 ,but he answered3 ,of the children of ,israel4 ,and ,tobias said to him3 ,knowest thou the way that leadeth to the country of the ,medes8 #e3h4 ,and he answered3 ,i know it3 and ,i have often walked through all the ways thereof1 and ,i have abode with ,gabelus our brother1 who dwelleth at ,rages a city of the ,medes1 which is situate in the mount of ,ecbatana4 #e3i4 ,and ,tobias said to him3 ,stay for me1 ,i beseech thee1 till ,i tell these same things to my father4 #e3aj4 ,then ,tobias going in told all these things to his father4 ,upon which his father being in admiration1 desired that he would come in unto him4 #e3aa4 ,so going in he saluted him1 and said3 ,joy be to thee always4 #e3ab4 ,and ,tobias said3 ,what manner of joy shall be to me1 who sit in darkness and see not the light of heaven8 #e3ac4 ,and the young man said to him3 ,be of good courage1 thy cure from ,god is at hand4 #e3ad4 ,and ,tobias said to him3 ,canst thou conduct my son to ,gabelus at ,rages1 a city of the ,medes8 and when thou shalt return1 ,i will pay thee thy hire4 #e3ae4 ,and the angel said to him3 ,i will conduct him thither1 and bring him back to thee4 #e3af4 ,and ,tobias said to him3 ,i pray thee1 tell me1 of what family1 or what tribe art thou8 #e3ag4 ,and ,raphael the angel answered3 ,dost thou seek the family of him thou hirest1 or the hired servant himself to go with thy son8 #e3ah4 ,but lest ,i should make thee uneasy1 ,i am ,azarias the son of the great ,ananias4 ,azarias444 ,the angel took the form of ,azarias3 and therefore might call himself by the name of the man whom he personated4 ,azarias1 in ,hebrew1 signifies the help of ,god1 and ,ananias the grace of ,god4 #e3ai4 ,and ,tobias answered3 ,thou art of a great family4 ,but ,i pray thee be not angry that ,i desired to know thy family4 #e3bj4 ,and the angel said to him3 ,i will lead thy son safe1 and bring him to thee again safe4 #e3ba4 ,and ,tobias answering1 said3 ,may you have a good journey1 and ,god be with you in your way1 and his angel accompany you4 #e3bb4 ,then all things being ready1 that were to be carried in their journey1 ,tobias bade his father and his mother farewell1 and they set out both together4 #e3bc4 ,and when they were departed1 his mother began to weep1 and to say3 ,thou hast taken the staff of our old age1 and sent him away from us4 #e3bd4 ,i wish the money for which thou hast sent him1 had never been4 #e3be4 ,for our poverty was sufficient for us1 that we might account it as riches1 that we saw our son4 #e3bf4 ,and ,tobias said to her3 ,weep not1 our son will arrive thither safe1 and will return safe to us1 and thy eyes shall see him4 #e3bg4 ,for ,i believe that the good angel of ,god doth accompany him1 and doth order all things well that are done about him1 so that he shall return to us with joy4 #e3bh4 ,at these words his mother ceased weeping1 and held her peace4 ,tobias ,chapter #f ,by the angel's advice young ,tobias taketh hold on a fish that assaulteth him4 ,reserveth the heart1 the gall1 and the liver for medicines4 ,they lodge at the house of ,raguel1 whose daughter ,sara1 ,tobias is to marry2 she had before been married to seven husbands1 who were all slain by a devil4 #f3a4 ,and ,tobias went forward1 and the dog followed him1 and he lodged the first night by the river of ,tigris4 #f3b4 ,and he went out to wash his feet1 and behold a monstrous fish came up to devour him4 #f3c4 ,and ,tobias being afraid of him1 cried out with a loud voice1 saying3 ,sir1 he cometh upon me4 #f3d4 ,and the angel said to him3 ,take him by the gill1 and draw him to thee4 ,and when he had done so1 he drew him out upon the land1 and he began to pant before his feet4 #f3e4 ,then the angel said to him3 ,take out the entrails of this fish1 and lay up his heart1 and his gall1 and his liver for thee3 for these are necessary for useful medicines4 #f3f4 ,and when he had done so1 he roasted the flesh thereof1 and they took it with them in the way3 the rest they salted as much as might serve them1 till they came to ,rages the city of the ,medes4 #f3g4 ,then ,tobias asked the angel1 and said to him3 ,i beseech thee1 brother ,azarias1 tell me what remedies are these things good for1 which thou hast bid me keep of the fish8 #f3h4 ,and the angel1 answering1 said to him3 ,if thou put a little piece of its heart upon coals1 the smoke thereof driveth away all kind of devils1 either from man or from woman1 so that they come no more to them4 ,its heart1 etc4 ,the liver 7ver4 #ai7444 ,god was pleased to give these things a virtue against those proud spirits1 to make them1 who affected to be like the ,most ,high1 subject to such mean corporeal creatures as instruments of his power4 #f3i4 ,and the gall is good for anointing the eyes1 in which there is a white speck1 and they shall be cured4 #f3aj4 ,and ,tobias said to him3 ,where wilt thou that we lodge8 #f3aa4 ,and the angel answering1 said3 ,here is one whose name is ,raguel1 a near kinsman of thy tribe1 and he hath a daughter named ,sara1 but he hath no son nor any other daughter beside her4 #f3ab4 ,all his substance is due to thee1 and thou must take her to wife4 #f3ac4 ,ask her therefore of her father1 and he will give her thee to wife4 #f3ad4 ,then ,tobias answered1 and said3 ,i hear that she hath been given to seven husbands1 and they all died3 moreover ,i have heard1 that a devil killed them4 #f3ae4 ,now ,i am afraid1 lest the same thing should happen to me also3 and whereas ,i am the only child of my parents1 ,i should bring down their old age with sorrow to hell4 ,hell444 ,that is1 to the place where the souls of the good were kept before the coming of ,christ4 #f3af4 ,then the angel ,raphael said to him3 ,hear me1 and ,i will shew thee who they are1 over whom the devil can prevail4 #f3ag4 ,for they who in such manner receive matrimony1 as to shut out ,god from themselves1 and from their mind1 and to give themselves to their lust1 as the horse and mule1 which have not understanding1 over them the devil hath power4 #f3ah4 ,but thou when thou shalt take her1 go into the chamber1 and for three days keep thyself continent from her1 and give thyself to nothing else but to prayers with her4 #f3ai4 ,and on that night lay the liver of the fish on the fire1 and the devil shall be driven away4 #f3bj4 ,but the second night thou shalt be admitted into the society of the holy ,patriarchs4 #f3ba4 ,and the third night thou shalt obtain a blessing that sound children may be born of you4 #f3bb4 ,and when the third night is past1 thou shalt take the virgin with the fear of the ,lord1 moved rather for love of children than for lust1 that in the seed of ,abraham thou mayst obtain a blessing in children4 ,tobias ,chapter #g ,they are kindly entertained by ,raguel4 ,tobias demandeth ,sara to wife4 #g3a4 ,and they went in to ,raguel1 and ,raguel received them with joy4 #g3b4 ,and ,raguel looking upon ,tobias1 said to ,anna his wife3 ,how like is this young man to my cousin8 #g3c4 ,and when he had spoken these words1 he said3 ,whence are ye young men our brethren8 #g3d4 ,but they said3 ,we are of the tribe of ,nephtali1 of the captivity of ,ninive4 #g3e4 ,and ,raguel said to them3 ,do you know ,tobias my brother8 ,and they said3 ,we know him4 #g3f4 ,and when he was speaking many good things of him1 the angel said to ,raguel3 ,tobias concerning whom thou inquirest is this young man's father4 #g3g4 ,and ,raguel went to him1 and kissed him with tears and weeping upon his neck1 said3 ,a blessing be upon thee1 my son1 because thou art the son of a good and most virtuous man4 #g3h4 ,and ,anna his wife1 and ,sara their daughter wept4 #g3i4 ,and after they had spoken1 ,raguel commanded a sheep to be killed1 and a feast to be prepared4 ,and when he desired them to sit down to dinner1 #g3aj4 ,tobias said3 ,i will not eat nor drink here this day1 unless thou first grant me my petition1 and promise to give me ,sara thy daughter4 #g3aa4 ,now when ,raguel heard this he was afraid1 knowing what had happened to those seven husbands1 that went in unto her3 and he began to fear lest it might happen to him also in like manner3 and as he was in suspense1 and gave no answer to his petition1 #g3ab4 ,the angel said to him3 ,be not afraid to give her to this man1 for to him who feareth ,god is thy daughter due to be his wife3 therefore another could not have her4 #g3ac4 ,then ,raguel said3 ,i doubt not but ,god hath regarded my prayers and tears in his sight4 #g3ad4 ,and ,i believe he hath therefore made you come to me1 that this maid might be married to one of her own kindred1 according to the law of ,moses3 and now doubt not but ,i will give her to thee4 #g3ae4 ,and taking the right hand of his daughter1 he gave it into the right hand of ,tobias1 saying3 ,the ,god of ,abraham1 and the ,god of ,isaac1 and the ,god of ,jacob be with you1 and may he join you together1 and fulfil his blessing in you4 #g3af4 ,and taking paper they made a writing of the marriage4 #g3ag4 ,and afterwards they made merry1 blessing ,god4 #g3ah4 ,and ,raguel called to him ,anna his wife1 and bade her to prepare another chamber4 #g3ai4 ,and she brought ,sara her daughter in thither1 and she wept4 #g3bj4 ,and she said to her3 ,be of good cheer1 my daughter3 the ,lord of heaven give thee joy for the trouble thou hast undergone4 ,tobias ,chapter #h ,tobias burneth part of the fish's liver1 and ,raphael bindeth the devil4 ,tobias and ,sara pray4 #h3a4 ,and after they had supped1 they brought in the young man to her4 #h3b4 ,and ,tobias remembering the angel's word1 took out of his bag part of the liver1 and laid it upon burning coals4 #h3c4 ,then the angel ,raphael took the devil1 and bound him in the desert of upper ,egypt4 #h3d4 ,then ,tobias exhorted the virgin1 and said to her3 ,sara1 arise1 and let us pray to ,god to day1 and to morrow1 and the next day3 because for these three nights we are joined to ,god3 and when the third night is over1 we will be in our own wedlock4 #h3e4 ,for we are the children of saints1 and we must not be joined together like heathens that know not ,god4 #h3f4 ,so they both arose1 and prayed earnestly both together that health might be given them1 #h3g4 ,and ,tobias said3 ,lord ,god of our fathers1 may the heavens and the earth1 and the sea1 and the fountains1 and the rivers1 and all thy creatures that are in them1 bless thee4 #h3h4 ,thou madest ,adam of the slime of the earth1 and gavest him ,eve for a helper4 #h3i4 ,and now1 ,lord1 thou knowest1 that not for fleshly lust do ,i take my sister to wife1 but only for the love of posterity1 in which thy name may be blessed for ever and ever4 #h3aj4 ,sara also said3 ,have mercy on us1 ,o ,lord1 have mercy on us1 and let us grow old both together in health4 #h3aa4 ,and it came to pass about the cockcrowing1 ,raguel ordered his servants to be called for1 and they went with him together to dig a grave4 #h3ab4 ,for he said3 ,lest perhaps it may have happened to him1 in like manner as it did to the other seven husbands1 that went in unto her4 #h3ac4 ,and when they had prepared the pit1 ,raguel went back to his wife1 and said to her3 #h3ad4 ,send one of thy maids1 and let her see if he be dead1 that ,i may bury him before it be day4 #h3ae4 ,so she sent one of her maidservants1 who went into the chamber1 and found them safe and sound1 sleeping both together4 #h3af4 ,and returning she brought the good news3 and ,raguel and ,anna his wife blessed the ,lord1 #h3ag4 ,and said3 ,we bless thee1 ,o ,lord ,god of ,israel1 because it hath not happened as we suspected4 #h3ah4 ,for thou hast shewn thy mercy to us1 and hast shut out from us the enemy that persecuted us4 #h3ai4 ,and thou hast taken pity upon two only children4 ,make them1 ,o ,lord1 bless thee more fully3 and to offer up to thee a sacrifice of thy praise1 and of their health1 that all nations may know1 that thou alone art ,god in all the earth4 #h3bj4 ,and immediately ,raguel commanded his servants1 to fill up the pit they had made1 before it was day4 #h3ba4 ,and he spoke to his wife to make ready a feast1 and prepare all kind of provisions that are necessary for such as go a journey4 #h3bb4 ,he caused also two fat kine1 and four wethers to be killed1 and a banquet to be prepared for all his neighbours1 and all his friends1 #h3bc4 ,and ,raguel adjured ,tobias1 to abide with him two weeks4 #h3bd4 ,and of all things which ,raguel possessed1 he gave one half to ,tobias1 and made a writing1 that the half that remained should after their decease come also to ,tobias4 ,tobias ,chapter #i ,the angel ,raphael goeth to ,gabelus1 receiveth the money1 and bringeth him to the marriage4 #i3a4 ,then ,tobias called the angel to him1 whom he took to be a man1 and said to him3 ,brother ,azarias1 ,i pray thee hearken to my words3 #i3b4 ,if ,i should give myself to be thy servant ,i should not make a worthy return for thy care4 #i3c4 ,however1 ,i beseech thee1 to take with thee beasts and servants1 and to go to ,gabelus to ,rages the city of the ,medes3 and to restore to him his note of hand1 and receive of him the money1 and desire him to come to my wedding4 #i3d4 ,for thou knowest that my father numbereth the days3 and if ,i stay one day more1 his soul will be afflicted4 #i3e4 ,and indeed thou seest how ,raguel hath adjured me1 whose adjuring ,i cannot despise4 #i3f4 ,then ,raphael took four of ,raguel's servants1 and two camels1 and went to ,rages the city of the ,medes3 and finding ,gabelus1 gave him his note of hand1 and received of him all the money4 #i3g4 ,and he told him concerning ,tobias the son of ,tobias1 all that had been done3 and made him come with him to the wedding4 #i3h4 ,and when he was come into ,raguel's house he found ,tobias sitting at the table3 and he leaped up1 and they kissed each other3 and ,gabelus wept1 and blessed ,god1 #i3i4 ,and said3 ,the ,god of ,israel bless thee1 because thou art the son of a very good and just man1 and that feareth ,god1 and doth almsdeeds3 #i3aj4 ,and may a blessing come upon thy wife and upon your parents4 #i3aa4 ,and may you see your children1 and your children's children1 unto the third and fourth generation3 and may your seed be blessed by the ,god of ,israel1 who reigneth for ever and ever4 #i3ab4 ,and when all had said1 ,amen1 they went to the feast3 but the marriage feast they celebrated also with the fear of the ,lord4 ,tobias ,chapter #aj ,the parents lament the long absence of their son ,tobias4 ,he sets out to return4 #aj3a4 ,but as ,tobias made longer stay upon occasion of the marriage1 ,tobias his father was solicitous1 saying3 ,why thinkest thou doth my son tarry1 or why is he detained there8 #aj3b4 ,is ,gabelus dead1 thinkest thou1 and no man will pay him the money8 #aj3c4 ,and he began to be exceeding sad1 both he and ,anna his wife with him3 and they began both to weep together1 because their son did not return to them on the day appointed4 #aj3d4 ,but his mother wept and was quite disconsolate1 and said3 ,woe1 woe is me1 my son2 why did we send thee to go to a strange country1 the light of our eyes1 the staff of our old age1 the comfort of our life1 the hope of our posterity8 #aj3e4 ,we having all things together in thee alone1 ought not to have let thee go from us4 #aj3f4 ,and ,tobias said to her3 ,hold thy peace1 and be not troubled1 our son is safe3 that man with whom we sent him is very trusty4 #aj3g4 ,but she could by no means be comforted1 but daily running out looked round about1 and went into all the ways by which there seemed any hope he might return1 that she might if possible see him coming afar off4 #aj3h4 ,but ,raguel said to his son in law3 ,stay here1 and ,i will send a messenger to ,tobias thy father1 that thou art in health4 #aj3i4 ,and ,tobias said to him3 ,i know that my father and mother now count the days1 and their spirit is grievously afflicted within them4 #aj3aj4 ,and when ,raguel had pressed ,tobias with many words1 and he by no means would hearken to him1 he delivered ,sara unto him1 and half of all his substance in menservants1 and womenservants1 in cattle1 in camels1 and in kine1 and in much money1 and sent him away safe and joyful from him1 #aj3aa4 ,saying3 ,the holy angel of the ,lord be with you in your journey1 and bring you through safe1 and that you may find all things well about your parents1 and my eyes may see your children before ,i die4 #aj3ab4 ,and the parents taking their daughter kissed her1 and let her go3 #aj3ac4 ,admonishing her to honour her father and mother in law1 to love her husband1 to take care of the family1 to govern the house1 and to behave herself irreprehensibly4 ,tobias ,chapter #aa ,tobias anointeth his father's eyes with the fish's gall1 and he recovereth his sight4 #aa3a4 ,and as they were returning they came to ,charan1 which is in the midway to ,ninive1 the eleventh day4 #aa3b4 ,and the angel said3 ,brother ,tobias1 thou knowest how thou didst leave thy father4 #aa3c4 ,if it please thee therefore1 let us go before1 and let the family follow softly after us1 together with thy wife1 and with the beasts4 #aa3d4 ,and as this their going pleased him1 ,raphael said to ,tobias3 ,take with thee of the gall of the fish1 for it will be necessary4 ,so ,tobias took some of that gall and departed4 #aa3e4 ,but ,anna sat beside the way daily1 on the top of a hill1 from whence she might see afar off4 #aa3f4 ,and while she watched his coming from that place1 she saw him afar off1 and presently perceived it was her son coming3 and returning she told her husband1 saying3 ,behold thy son cometh4 #aa3g4 ,and ,raphael said to ,tobias3 ,as soon as thou shalt come into thy house1 forthwith adore the ,lord thy ,god3 and giving thanks to him1 go to thy father1 and kiss him4 #aa3h4 ,and immediately anoint his eyes with this gall of the fish1 which thou carriest with thee4 ,for be assured that his eyes shall be presently opened1 and thy father shall see the light of heaven1 and shall rejoice in the sight of thee4 #aa3i4 ,then the dog1 which had been with them in the way1 ran before1 and coming as if he had brought the news1 shewed his joy by his fawning and wagging his tail4 ,the dog1 etc444 ,this may seem a very minute circumstance to be recorded in sacred history3 but as we learn from our ,saviour1 ,st4 ,matt4 #e4ah1 there are iotas and tittles in the word of ,god3 that is to say1 things that appear minute1 but which have indeed a deep and mysterious meaning in them4 #aa3aj4 ,and his father that was blind1 rising up1 began to run stumbling with his feet3 and giving a servant his hand1 went to meet his son4 #aa3aa4 ,and receiving him kissed him1 as did also his wife1 and they began to weep for joy4 #aa3ab4 ,and when they had adored ,god1 and given him thanks1 they sat down together4 #aa3ac4 ,then ,tobias taking of the gall of the fish1 anointed his father's eyes4 #aa3ad4 ,and he stayed about half an hour3 and a white skin began to come out of his eyes1 like the skin of an egg4 #aa3ae4 ,and ,tobias took hold of it1 and drew it from his eyes1 and recovered his sight4 #aa3af4 ,and they glorified ,god1 both he and his wife and all that knew him4 #aa3ag4 ,and ,tobias said3 ,i bless thee1 ,o ,lord ,god of ,israel1 because thou hast chastised me1 and thou hast saved me and behold ,i see ,tobias my son4 #aa3ah4 ,and after seven days ,sara his son's wife and all the family arrived safe1 and the cattle1 and the camels1 and an abundance of money of his wife's3 and that money also which he had received of ,gabelus1 #aa3ai4 ,and he told his parents all the benefits of ,god1 which he had done to him by the man that conducted him4 #aa3bj4 ,and ,achior and ,nabath the kinsmen of ,tobias came1 rejoicing for ,tobias1 and congratulating with him for all the good things that ,god had done for him4 #aa3ba4 ,and for seven days they feasted and rejoiced all with great joy4 ,tobias ,chapter #ab ,raphael maketh himself known4 #ab3a4 ,then ,tobias called to him his son and said to him3 ,what can we give to this holy man1 that is come with thee8 #ab3b4 ,tobias answering1 said to his father3 ,father1 what wages shall we give him8 or what can be worthy of his benefits8 #ab3c4 ,he conducted me and brought me safe again1 he received the money of ,gabelus1 he caused me to have my wife1 and he chased from her the evil spirit1 he gave joy to her parents1 myself he delivered from being devoured by the fish1 thee also he hath made to see the light of heaven1 and we are filled with all good things through him4 ,what can we give him sufficient for these things8 #ab3d4 ,but ,i beseech thee1 my father1 to desire him1 that he would vouchsafe to accept of one half of all things that have been brought4 #ab3e4 ,so the father and the son calling him1 took him aside3 and began to desire him that he would vouchsafe to accept of half of all things that they had brought1 #ab3f4 ,then he said to them secretly1 ,bless ye the ,god of heaven1 give glory to him in the sight of all that live1 because he hath shewn his mercy to you4 #ab3g4 ,for it is good to hide the secret of a king3 to reveal and confess the works of ,god4 #ab3h4 ,prayer is good with fasting and alms more than to lay up treasures of gold4 #ab3i4 ,for alms delivereth from death1 and the same is that which purgeth away sins1 and maketh to find mercy and life everlasting4 #ab3aj4 ,but they that commit sin and iniquity1 are enemies to their own soul4 #ab3aa4 ,i discover then the truth unto you1 and ,i will not hide the secret from you4 #ab3ab4 ,when thou didst pray with tears1 and didst bury the dead1 and didst leave thy dinner1 and hide the dead by day in thy house1 and bury them by night1 ,i offered thy prayer to the ,lord4 #ab3ac4 ,and because thou wast acceptable to ,god1 it was necessary that temptation should prove thee4 #ab3ad4 ,and now the ,lord hath sent me to heal thee1 and to deliver ,sara thy son's wife from the devil4 #ab3ae4 ,for ,i am the angel ,raphael1 one of the seven1 who stand before the ,lord4 #ab3af4 ,and when they had heard these things1 they were troubled1 and being seized with fear they fell upon the ground on their face4 #ab3ag4 ,and the angel said to them3 ,peace be to you1 fear not4 #ab3ah4 ,for when ,i was with you1 ,i was there by the will of ,god3 bless ye him1 and sing praises to him4 #ab3ai4 ,i seemed indeed to eat and to drink with you but ,i use an invisible meat and drink1 which cannot be seen by men4 #ab3bj4 ,it is time therefore that ,i return to him that sent me3 but bless ye ,god1 and publish all his wonderful works4 #ab3ba4 ,and when he had said these things1 he was taken from their sight1 and they could see him no more4 #ab3bb4 ,then they lying prostrate for three hours upon their face1 blessed ,god1 and rising up1 they told all his wonderful works4 ,tobias ,chapter #ac ,tobias the father praiseth ,god1 exhorting all ,israel to do the same4 ,prophesieth the restoration and better state of ,jerusalem4 #ac3a4 ,and ,tobias the elder opening his mouth1 blessed the ,lord1 and said3 ,thou art great ,o ,lord1 for ever1 and thy kingdom is unto all ages4 #ac3b4 ,for thou scourgest1 and thou savest3 thou leadest down to hell1 and bringest up again3 and there is none that can escape thy hand4 #ac3c4 ,give glory to the ,lord1 ye children of ,israel1 and praise him in the sight of the ,gentiles3 #ac3d4 ,because he hath therefore scattered you among the ,gentiles1 who know not him1 that you may declare his wonderful works1 and make them know that there is no other almighty ,god besides him4 #ac3e4 ,he hath chastised us for our iniquities3 and he will save us for his own mercy4 #ac3f4 ,see then what he hath done with us1 and with fear and trembling give ye glory to him3 and extol the eternal ,king of worlds in your works4 #ac3g4 ,as for me1 ,i will praise him in the land of my captivity3 because he hath shewn his majesty toward a sinful nation1 #ac3h4 ,be converted therefore1 ye sinners1 and do justice before ,god1 believing that he will shew his mercy to you4 #ac3i4 ,and ,i and my soul will rejoice in him4 #ac3aj4 ,bless ye the ,lord1 all his elect1 keep days of joy1 and give glory to him4 #ac3aa4 ,jerusalem1 city of ,god1 the ,lord hath chastised thee for the works of thy hands4 ,jerusalem444 ,what is prophetically delivered here1 and in the following chapter1 with relation to ,jerusalem1 is partly to be understood of the rebuilding of the city after the captivity3 and partly of the spiritual ,jerusalem1 which is the church of ,christ1 and the eternal ,jerusalem in heaven4 #ac3ab4 ,give glory to the ,lord for thy good things1 and bless the ,god eternal that he may rebuild his tabernacle in thee1 and may call back all the captives to thee1 and thou mayst rejoice for ever and ever4 #ac3ac4 ,thou shalt shine with a glorious light3 and all the ends of the earth shall worship thee1 #ac3ad4 ,nations from afar shall come to thee3 and shall bring gifts1 and shall adore the ,lord in thee1 and shall esteem thy land as holy4 #ac3ae4 ,for they shall call upon the great name in thee1 #ac3af4 ,they shall be cursed that shall despise thee3 and they shall be condemned that shall blaspheme thee3 and blessed shall they be that shall build thee up1 #ac3ag4 ,but thou shalt rejoice in thy children1 because they shall all be blessed1 and shall be gathered together to the ,lord4 #ac3ah4 ,blessed are all they that love thee1 and that rejoice in thy peace1 #ac3ai4 ,my soul1 bless thou the ,lord1 because the ,lord our ,god hath delivered ,jerusalem his city from all her troubles4 #ac3bj4 ,happy shall ,i be if there shall remain of my seed1 to see the glory of ,jerusalem4 #ac3ba4 ,the gates of ,jerusalem shall be built of sapphire1 and of emerald1 and all the walls thereof round about of precious stones4 #ac3bb4 ,all its streets shall be paved with white and clean stones3 and ,alleluia shall be sung in its streets1 #ac3bc4 ,blessed be the ,lord1 who hath exalted it1 and may he reign over it for ever and ever1 ,amen4 ,tobias ,chapter #ad ,old ,tobias dieth at the age of a hundred and two years1 after exhorting his son and grandsons to piety1 foreshewing that ,ninive shall be destroyed1 and ,jerusalem rebuilt4 ,the younger ,tobias returneth with his family to ,raguel1 and dieth happily as he had lived4 #ad3a4 ,and the words of ,tobias were ended4 ,and after ,tobias was restored to his sight1 he lived two and forty years1 and saw the children of his grandchildren4 #ad3b4 ,and after he had lived a hundred and two years1 he was buried honorably in ,ninive4 #ad3c4 ,for he was six and fifty years old when he lost the sight of his eyes1 and sixty when he recovered it again4 #ad3d4 ,and the rest of his life was in joy1 and with great increase of the fear of ,god he departed in peace4 #ad3e4 ,and at the hour of his death he called unto him his son ,tobias and his children1 seven young men1 his grandsons1 and said to them3 #ad3f4 ,the destruction of ,ninive is at hand3 for the word of the ,lord must be fulfilled3 and our brethren1 that are scattered abroad from the land of ,israel1 shall return to it4 #ad3g4 ,and all the land thereof that is desert shall be filled with people1 and the house of ,god which is burnt in it1 shall again be rebuilt3 and all that fear ,god shall return thither4 #ad3h4 ,and the ,gentiles shall leave their idols1 and shall come into ,jerusalem1 and shall dwell in it4 #ad3i4 ,and all the kings of the earth shall rejoice in it1 adoring the ,king of ,israel4 #ad3aj4 ,hearken therefore1 my children1 to your father3 serve the ,lord in truth1 and seek to do the things that please him3 #ad3aa4 ,and command your children that they do justice and almsdeeds1 and that they be mindful of ,god1 and bless him at all times in truth1 and with all their power4 #ad3ab4 ,and now1 children1 hear me1 and do not stay here3 but as soon as you shall bury your mother by me in one sepulchre1 without delay direct your steps to depart hence3 #ad3ac4 ,for ,i see that its iniquity will bring it to destruction4 #ad3ad4 ,and it came to pass that after the death of his mother1 ,tobias departed out of ,ninive with his wife1 and children1 and children's children1 and returned to his father and mother in law4 #ad3ae4 ,and he found them in health in a good old age3 and he took care of them1 and he closed their eyes3 and all the inheritance of ,raguel's house came to him3 and he saw his children's children to the fifth generation4 #ad3af4 ,and after he had lived ninety-nine years in the fear of the ,lord1 with joy they buried him4 #ad3ag4 ,and all his kindred1 and all his generation continued in good life1 and in holy conversation1 so that they were acceptable both to ,god1 and to men1 and to all that dwelt in the land4
