death3 and causeth fire to come down from heaven1 upon two captains and their companies4 #a3a4 ,and ,moab rebelled against ,israel1 after the death of ,achab4 #a3b4 ,and ,ochozias fell through the lattices of his upper chamber1 which he had in ,samaria1 and was sick3 and he sent messengers1 saying to them3 ,go1 consult ,beelzebub1 the god of ,accaron1 whether ,i shall recover of this my illness4 #a3c4 ,and an angel of the ,lord spoke to ,elias1 the ,thesbite1 saying3 ,arise1 and go up to meet the messengers of the king of ,samaria1 and say to them3 ,is there not a ,god in ,israel1 that ye go to consult ,beelzebub1 the god of ,accaron8 #a3d4 ,wherefore1 thus saith the ,lord3 ,from the bed1 on which thou art gone up1 thou shalt not come down1 but thou shalt surely die4 ,and ,elias went away4 #a3e4 ,and the messengers turned back to ,ochozias4 ,and he said to them3 ,why are you come back8 #a3f4 ,but they answered him3 ,a man met us1 and said to us3 ,go1 and return to the king1 that sent you1 and you shall say to him3 ,thus saith the ,lord3 ,is it because there was no ,god in ,israel1 that thou sendest to ,beelzebub1 the god of ,accaron8 ,therefore thou shalt not come down from the bed1 on which thou art gone up1 but thou shalt surely die4 #a3g4 ,and he said to them3 ,what manner of man was he who met you1 and spoke these words8 #a3h4 ,but they said3 ,a hairy man1 with a girdle of leather about his loins4 ,and he said3 ,it is ,elias1 the ,thesbite4 #a3i4 ,and he sent to him a captain of fifty1 and the fifty men that were under him4 ,and he went up to him1 and as he was sitting on the top of a hill1 he said to him3 ,man of ,god1 the king hath commanded that thou come down4 #a3aj4 ,and ,elias answering1 said to the captain of fifty3 ,if ,i be a man of ,god1 let fire come down from heaven and consume thee1 and thy fifty4 ,and there came down fire from heaven and consumed him1 and the fifty that were with him4 ,let fire1 etc444 ,elias was inspired to call for fire from heaven upon these captains1 who came to apprehend him2 not out of a desire to gratify any private passion2 but to punish the insult offered to religion1 to confirm his mission1 and to shew how vain are the efforts of men against ,god1 and his servants1 whom he willeth to protect4 #a3aa4 ,and he again sent to him another captain of fifty men1 and his fifty with him4 ,and he said to him3 ,man of ,god3 ,thus saith the king3 ,make haste and come down4 #a3ab4 ,elias answering1 said3 ,if ,i be a man of ,god1 let fire come down from heaven1 and consume thee1 and thy fifty4 ,and fire came down from heaven1 and consumed him and his fifty4 #a3ac4 ,again he sent a third captain of fifty men1 and the fifty that were with him4 ,and when he was come1 he fell upon his knees before ,elias1 and besought him1 and said3 ,man of ,god1 despise not my life1 and the lives of thy servants that are with me4 #a3ad4 ,behold fire came down from heaven1 and consumed the two first captains of fifty men1 and the fifties that were with them3 but now ,i beseech thee to spare my life4 #a3ae4 ,and the angel of the ,lord spoke to ,elias1 saying3 ,go down with him1 fear not4 ,he arose therefore1 and went down with him to the king1 #a3af4 ,and said to him3 ,thus saith the ,lord3 ,because thou hast sent messengers to consult ,beelzebub1 the god of ,accaron1 as though there were not a ,god in ,israel1 of whom thou mightest inquire the word2 therefore1 from the bed on which thou art gone up1 thou shalt not come down1 but thou shalt surely die4 #a3ag4 ,so he died1 according to the word of the ,lord1 which ,elias spoke2 and ,joram1 his brother1 reigned in his stead1 in the second year of ,joram1 the son of ,josaphat1 king of ,juda1 because he had no son4 ,the second year of ,joram1 etc444 ,counted from the time that he was associated to the throne by his father ,josaphat4 #a3ah4 ,but the rest of the acts of ,ochozias1 which he did1 are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of ,israel8 #d ,kings ,chapter #b ,eliseus will not part from ,elias4 ,the water of the ,jordan is divided by ,elias' cloak4 ,elias is taken up in a fiery chariot1 and his double spirit is given to ,eliseus4 ,eliseus healeth the waters by casting in salt4 ,boys are torn by bears for mocking ,eliseus4 #b3a4 ,and it came to pass1 when the ,lord would take up ,elias1 into heaven1 by a whirlwind1 that ,elias and ,eliseus were going from ,galgal4 ,heaven444 ,by heaven here is meant the air1 the lowest of the heavenly regions4 #b3b4 ,and ,elias said to ,eliseus3 ,stay thou here1 because the ,lord hath sent me as far as ,bethel4 ,and ,eliseus said to him3 ,as the ,lord liveth1 and as thy soul liveth1 ,i will not leave thee4 ,and when they were come down to ,bethel1 #b3c4 ,the sons of the prophets1 that were at ,bethel1 came forth to ,eliseus1 and said to him3 ,dost thou know that1 this day1 the ,lord will take away thy master from thee8 ,and he answered3 ,i also know it3 hold your peace4 ,the sons of the prophets444 ,that is1 the disciples of the prophets2 who seem to have had their schools1 like colleges or communities1 in ,bethel1 ,jericho1 and other places in the days of ,elias and ,eliseus4 #b3d4 ,and ,elias said to ,eliseus3 ,stay here1 because the ,lord hath sent me to ,jericho4 ,and he said3 ,as the ,lord liveth1 and as thy soul liveth1 ,i will not leave thee4 ,and when they were come to ,jericho1 #b3e4 ,the sons of the prophets1 that were at ,jericho1 came to ,eliseus1 and said to him3 ,dost thou know that1 this day1 the ,lord will take away thy master from thee8 ,and he said3 ,i also know it3 hold your peace4 #b3f4 ,and ,elias said to him3 ,stay here1 because the ,lord hath sent me as far as the ,jordan4 ,and he said3 as the ,lord liveth1 and as thy soul liveth1 ,i will not leave thee4 ,and they two went on together4 #b3g4 ,and fifty men1 of the sons of the prophets1 followed them1 and stood in sight1 at a distance3 but they two stood by the ,jordan4 #b3h4 ,and ,elias took his mantle1 and folded it together1 and struck the waters1 and they were divided hither and thither1 and they both passed over on dry ground4 #b3i4 ,and when they were gone over1 ,elias said to ,eliseus3 ,ask what thou wilt have me to do for thee1 before ,i be taken away from thee4 ,and ,eliseus said3 ,i beseech thee1 that in me may be thy double spirit4 ,double spirit444 ,a double portion of thy spirit1 as the eldest son and heir3 or thy spirit which is double in comparison of that which ,god usually imparteth to his prophets4 #b3aj4 ,and he answered3 ,thou hast asked a hard thing2 nevertheless1 if thou see me when ,i am taken from thee1 thou shalt have what thou hast asked3 but if thou see me not1 thou shalt not have it4 #b3aa4 ,and as they went on1 walking and talking together1 behold1 a fiery chariot and fiery horses parted them both asunder3 and ,elias went up by a whirlwind into heaven4 #b3ab4 ,and ,eliseus saw him1 and cried3 ,my father1 my father1 the chariot of ,israel1 and the driver thereof4 ,and he saw him no more3 and he took hold of his own garments1 and rent them in two pieces4 #b3ac4 ,and he took up the mantle of ,elias1 that fell from him3 and going back1 he stood on the bank of the ,jordan2 #b3ad4 ,and he struck the waters with the mantle of ,elias1 that had fallen from him1 and they were not divided4 ,and he said3 ,where is now the ,god of ,elias8 ,and he struck the waters1 and they were divided hither and thither1 and ,eliseus passed over4 #b3ae4 ,and the sons of the prophets1 at ,jericho1 who were over against him1 seeing it1 said3 ,the spirit of ,elias hath rested upon ,eliseus4 ,and coming to meet him1 they worshipped him1 falling to the ground4 ,they worshipped him444 viz41 with an inferior1 yet religious veneration1 not for any temporal1 but spiritual excellency4 #b3af4 ,and they said to him3 ,behold1 there are with thy servants1 fifty strong men1 that can go1 and seek thy master1 lest1 perhaps1 the spirit of the ,lord1 hath taken him up and cast him upon some monntain1 or into some valley4 ,and he said3 ,do not send4 #b3ag4 ,but they pressed him1 till he consented1 and said3 ,send4 ,and they sent fifty men3 and they sought three days1 but found him not4 #b3ah4 ,and they came back to him3 for he abode at ,jericho1 and he said to them3 ,did ,i not say to you8 ,do not send4 #b3l#i4 ,and the men of the city1 said to ,eliseus3 ,behold the situation of this city is very good1 as thou1 my lord1 seest3 but the waters are very bad1 and the ground barren4 #b3bj4 ,and he said3 ,bring me a new vessel1 and put salt into it4 ,and when they had brought it1 #b3ba4 ,he went out to the spring of the waters1 and cast the salt into it1 and said3 ,thus saith the ,lord3 ,i have healed these waters1 and there shall be no more in them death or barrenness4 #b3bb4 ,and the waters were healed unto this day1 according to the word of ,eliseus1 which he spoke4 #b3bc4 ,and he went up from thence to ,bethel3 and as he was going up by the way1 little boys came out of the city and mocked him1 saying3 ,go up1 thou bald head1 go up1 thou bald head4 #b3bd4 ,and looking back1 he saw them1 and cursed them in the name of the ,lord3 and there came forth two bears out of the forest1 and tore of them1 two and forty boys4 ,cursed them444 ,this curse1 which was followed by so visible a judgment of ,god1 was not the effect of passion1 or of a desire of revenging himself2 but of zeal for religion1 which was insulted by these boys1 in the person of the prophet2 and of a divine inspiration3 ,god punishing in this manner the inhabitants of ,bethel1 7the chief seat of the calf worship17 who had trained up their children in a prejudice against the true religion and its ministers4 #b3be4 ,and from thence he went to mount ,carmel1 and from thence he returned to ,samaria4 #d ,kings ,chapter #c ,the kings of ,israel1 ,juda1 and ,edom1 fight against the king of ,moab4 ,they want water1 which ,eliseus procureth without rain3 and prophesieth victory4 ,the king of ,moab is overthrown1 his city is besieged3 he sacrificeth his firstborn son3 so the ,israelites raise the siege4 #c3a4 ,and ,joram the son of ,achab1 reigned over ,israel1 in ,samaria1 in the eighteenth year of ,josaphat1 king of ,juda4 ,and he reigned twelve years4 #c3b4 ,and he did evil before the ,lord1 but not like his father and his mother3 for he took away the statues of ,baal1 which his father had made4 #c3c4 ,nevertheless1 he stuck to the sins of ,jeroboam1 the son of ,nabat1 who made ,israel to sin1 nor did he depart from them4 #c3d4 ,now ,mesa1 king of ,moab1 nourished many sheep1 and he paid to the king of ,israel a hundred thousand lambs1 and a hundred thousand rams1 with their fleeces4 #c3e4 ,and when ,achab was dead1 he broke the league which he had made with the king of ,israel4 #c3f4 ,and king ,joram went out that day from ,samaria1 and mustered all ,israel4 #c3g4 ,and he sent to ,josaphat2 king of ,juda1 saying3 ,the king of ,moab is revolted from me3 come with me against him to battle4 ,and he answered3 ,i will come up3 he that is mine1 is thine3 my people are thy people3 and my horses1 thy horses4 #c3h4 ,and he said3 ,which way shall we go up8 ,but he answered3 ,by the desert of ,edom4 #c3i4 ,so the king of ,israel1 and the king of ,juda1 and the king of ,edom1 went1 and they fetched a compass of seven days journey1 and there was no water for the army1 and for the beasts1 that followed them4 #c3aj4 ,and the king of ,israel said3 ,alas1 alas1 alas1 the ,lord hath gathered us three kings together1 to deliver us into the hands of ,moab4 #c3aa4 ,and ,josaphat said3 ,is there not here a prophet of the ,lord1 that we may beseech the ,lord by him8 ,and one of the servants of the king of ,israel answered3 ,here is ,eliseus1 the son of ,saphat1 who poured water on the hands of ,elias4 #c3ab4 ,and ,josaphat said3 ,the word of the ,lord is with him4 ,and the king of ,israel1 and ,josaphat1 king of ,juda1 and the king of ,edom1 went down to him4 #c3ac4 ,and ,eliseus said to the king of ,israel3 ,what have ,i to do with thee8 go to the prophets of thy father1 and thy mother4 ,and the king of ,israel said to him3 ,why hath the ,lord gathered together these three kings1 to deliver them into the hands of ,moab8 #c3ad4 ,and ,eliseus said to him3 ,as the ,lord of hosts liveth1 in whose sight ,i stand1 if ,i did not reverence the face of ,josaphat1 king of ,juda1 ,i would not have hearkened to thee1 nor looked on thee4 #c3ae4 ,but now bring me hither a minstrel4 ,and when the minstrel played1 the hand of the ,lord came upon him1 and he said3 #c3af4 ,thus saith the ,lord3 ,make the channel of this torrent full of ditches4 #c3ag4 ,for thus saith the ,lord3 ,you shall not see wind1 nor rain3 and yet this channel shall be filled with waters1 and you shall drink1 you and your families1 and your beasts4 #c3ah4 ,and this is a small thing in the sight of the ,lord3 moreover1 he will deliver1 also1 ,moab into your hands4 #c3ai4 ,and you shall destroy every fenced city1 and every choice city1 and shall cut down every fruitful tree1 and shall stop up all the springs of waters1 and every goodly field you shall cover with stones4 #c3bj4 ,and it came to pass1 in the morning1 when the sacrifices used to be offered1 that behold1 water came by the way of ,edom1 and the country was filled with water4 #c3ba4 ,and all the ,moabites hearing that the kings were come up to fight against them1 gathered together all that were girded with a belt upon them1 and stood in the borders4 #c3bb4 ,and they rose early in the morning1 and the sun being now up1 and shining upon the waters1 the ,moabites saw the waters over against them red1 like blood1 #c3bc4 ,and they said3 ,it is the blood of the sword3 the kings have fought among themselves1 and they have killed one another3 go now1 ,moab1 to the spoils4 #c3bd4 ,and they went into the camp of ,israel3 but ,israel rising up1 defeated ,moab1 who fled before them4 ,and they being conquerors1 went and smote ,moab4 #c3be4 ,and they destroyed the cities3 ,and they filled every goodly field1 every man casting his stone3 and they stopt up all the springs of waters3 and cut down all the trees that bore fruit1 so that brick walls only remained3 and the city was beset by the slingers1 and a great part thereof destroyed4 ,brick walls only remained444 ,it was the proper name of the capital city of the ,moabites4 ,in ,hebrew1 ,kir-,haraseth4 #c3bf4 ,and when the king of ,moab saw this1 to wit1 that the enemies had prevailed1 he took with him seven hundred men that drew the sword1 to break in upon the king of ,edom3 but they could not4 #c3bg4 ,then he took his eldest son1 that should have reigned in his stead1 and offered him for a burnt offering upon the wall3 and there was great indignation in ,israel1 and presently they departed from him1 and returned into their own country4 #d ,kings ,chapter #d ,miracles of ,eliseus4 ,he raiseth a dead child to life4 #d3a4 ,now a certain woman of the wives of the prophets1 cried to ,eliseus1 saying3 ,thy servant1 my husband1 is dead1 and thou knowest that thy servant was one that feared ,god1 and behold the creditor is come to take away my two sons to serve him4 #d3b4 ,and ,eliseus said to her3 ,what wilt thou have me do for thee8 ,tell me1 what hast thou in thy house8 ,and she answered3 ,i1 thy handmaid1 have nothing in my house but a little oil1 to anoint me4 #d3c4 ,and he said to her3 ,go1 borrow of all thy neighbours empty vessels1 not a few4 #d3d4 ,and go in1 and shut thy door1 when thou art within1 and thy sons3 and pour out thereof into all those vessels3 and when they are full1 take them away4 #d3e4 ,so the woman went1 and shut the door upon her1 and upon her sons3 they brought her the vessels1 and she poured in4 #d3f4 ,and when the vessels were full1 she said to her son3 ,bring me yet a vessel4 ,and he answered3 ,i have no more4 ,and the oil stood4 #d3g4 ,and she came1 and told the man of ,god4 ,and he said3 ,go1 sell the oil1 and pay thy creditor3 and thou and thy sons live of the rest4 #d3h4 ,and there was a day when ,eliseus passed by ,sunam3 now there was a great woman there1 who detained him to eat bread3 and as he passed often that way1 he turned into her house to eat bread4 #d3i4 ,and she said to her husband3 ,i perceive that this is a holy man of ,god1 who often passeth by us4 #d3aj4 ,let us1 therefore1 make him a little chamber1 and put a little bed in it for him1 and a table1 and a stool1 and a candlestick1 that when he cometh to us he may abide there4 #d3aa4 ,now1 there was a certain day1 when he came1 and turned into the chamber1 and rested there4 #d3ab4 ,and he said to ,giezi1 his servant3 ,call this ,sunamitess4 ,and when he had called her1 and she stood before him1 #d3ac4 ,he said to his servant3 ,say to her3 ,behold1 thou hast diligently served us in all things2 what wilt thou have me to do for thee8 ,hast thou any business1 and wilt thou1 that ,i speak to the king1 or to the general of the army8 ,and she answered3 ,i dwell in the midst of my own people4 #d3ad4 ,and he said3 ,what will she then that ,i do for her8 ,and ,giezi said3 ,do not ask1 for she hath no son1 and her husband is old4 #d3ae4 ,then he bid him call her4 ,and when she was called1 and stood before the door1 #d3af4 ,he said to her3 ,at this time1 and this same hour1 if life be in company1 thou shalt have a son in thy womb4 ,but she answered3 ,do not1 ,i beseech thee1 my lord1 thou man of ,god1 do not lie to thy handmaid4 #d3ag4 ,and the woman conceived1 and brought forth a son in the time1 and at the same hour that ,eliseus had said4 #d3ah4 ,and the child grew4 ,and on a certain day1 when he went out to his father to the reapers1 #d3ai4 ,he said to his father3 ,my head acheth1 my head acheth4 ,but he said to his servant4 ,take him1 and carry him to his mother4 #d3bj4 ,and when he had taken him1 and brought him to his mother1 she sat him on her knees1 until noon1 and then he died4 #d3ba4 ,and she went up1 and laid him upon the bed of the man of ,god1 and shut the door3 and going out1 #d3bb4 ,she called her husband1 and said3 ,send with me1 ,i beseech thee1 one of thy servants1 and an ass1 that ,i may run to the man of ,god1 and come again4 #d3bc4 ,and he said to her3 ,why dost thou go to him8 to day is neither new moon nor sabbath4 ,she answered3 ,i will go4 #d3bd4 ,and she saddled an ass1 and commanded her servant3 ,drive1 and make haste1 make no stay in going3 ,and do that which ,i bid thee4 #d3be4 ,so she went forward1 and came to the man of ,god1 to mount ,carmel3 and when the man of ,god saw her coming towards1 he said to ,giezi1 his servant3 ,behold that ,sunamitess4 #d3bf4 ,go1 therefore1 to meet her1 and say to her3 ,is all well with thee1 and with thy husband1 and with thy son8 ,and she answered3 ,well4 #d3bg4 ,and when she came to the man of ,god1 to the mount1 she caught hold on his feet3 and ,giezi came to remove her4 ,and the man of ,god said3 ,let her alone for her soul is in anguish1 and the ,lord hath hid it from me1 and hath not told me4 #d3bh4 ,and she said to him3 ,did ,i ask a son of my lord8 did ,i not say to thee3 ,do not deceive me8 #d3bi4 ,then he said to ,giezi3 ,gird up thy loins1 and take my staff in thy hand1 and go4 ,if any man meet thee1 salute him not3 and if any man salute thee1 answer him not3 and lay my staff upon the face of the child4 ,salute him not444 ,he that is sent to raise to life the sinner spiritually dead1 must not suffer himself to be called off1 or diverted from his enterprise1 by the salutations or ceremonies of the world4 #d3cj4 ,but the mother of the child said3 ,as the ,lord liveth1 and as thy soul liveth1 ,i will not leave thee4 ,he arose1 therefore1 and followed her4 #d3ca4 ,but ,giezi was gone before them1 and laid the staff upon the face of the child1 and there was no voice nor sense3 and he returned to meet him1 and told him1 saying3 ,the child is not risen4 ,st4 ,augustine considers a great mystery in this miracle wrought by the prophet ,eliseus1 thus3 ,by the staff sent by his servant is figured the rod of ,moses1 or the ,old ,law1 which was not sufficient to bring mankind to life then dead in sin4 ,it was necessary that ,christ himself should come1 and by taking on human nature1 become flesh of our flesh1 and restore us to life4 ,in this ,eliseus was a figure of ,christ1 as it was necessary that he should come himself to bring the dead child to life and restore him to his mother1 who is here1 in a mystical sense1 a figure of the ,church4 #d3cb4 ,eliseus1 therefore1 went into the house1 and behold the child lay dead on his bed3 #d3cc4 ,and going in1 he shut the door upon him1 and upon the child1 and prayed to the ,lord4 #d3cd4 ,and he went up1 and lay upon the child3 and put his mouth upon his mouth1 and his eyes upon his eyes1 and his hands upon his hands3 and he bowed himself upon him1 and the child's flesh grew warm4 #d3ce4 ,then he returned and walked in the house1 once to and fro3 and he went up1 and lay upon him3 and the child gaped seven times1 and opened his eyes4 #d3cf4 ,and he called ,giezi1 and said to him3 ,call this ,sunamitess4 ,and she being called1 went in to him3 and he said3 ,take up thy son4 #d3cg4 ,she came and fell at his feet1 and worshipped upon the ground3 and took up her son1 and went out4 #d3ch4 ,and ,eliseus returned to ,galgal1 and there was a famine in the land1 and the sons of the prophets dwelt before him3 ,and he said to one of his servants3 ,set on the great pot1 and boil pottage for the sons of the prophets4 #d3ci4 ,and one went out into the field to gather wild herbs3 and he found something like a wild vine1 and gathered of it wild gourds of the field1 and filled his mantle1 and coming back1 he shred them into the pot of pottage2 for he knew not what it was4 ,wild gourds of the field444 ,colocynthidas4 ,they are extremely bitter1 and therefore are called the gall of the earth2 and are poisonous if taken in a great quantity4 #d3dj4 ,and they poured it out for their companions to eat3 and when they had tasted of the pottage1 they cried out1 saying3 ,death is in the pot1 ,o man of ,god4 ,and they could not eat thereof4 #d3da4 ,but he said3 ,bring some meal4 ,and when they had brought it1 he cast it into the pot1 and said3 ,pour out for the people1 that they may eat4 ,and there was now no bitterness in the pot4 #d3db4 ,and a certain man came from ,baalsalisa1 bringing to the man of ,god1 bread of the firstfruits1 twenty loaves of barley1 and new corn in his scrip4 ,and he said3 ,give to the people1 that they may eat4 #d3dc4 ,and his servant answered him3 ,how much is this1 that ,i should set it before a hundred men8 ,he said again3 ,give to the people1 that they may eat3 for thus saith the ,lord3 ,they shall eat1 and there shall be left4 #d3dd4 ,so he set it before them3 and they ate1 and there was left1 according to the word of the ,lord4 #d ,kings ,chapter #e ,naaman the ,syrian is cleansed of his leprosy4 ,he professeth his belief in one ,god1 promising to serve him4 ,giezi taketh gifts of ,naaman1 and is struck with leprosy4 #e3a4 ,naaman1 general of the army1 of the king of ,syria1 was a great man with his master1 and honourable3 for by him the ,lord gave deliverance to ,syria3 and he was a valiant man1 and rich1 but a leper4 #e3b4 ,now there had gone out robbers from ,syria1 and had led away captive out of the land of ,israel1 a little maid1 and she waited upon ,naaman's wife4 #e3c4 ,and she said to her mistress3 ,i wish my master had been with the prophet that is in ,samaria3 he would certainly have healed him of the leprosy which he hath4 #e3d4 ,then ,naaman went in to his lord1 and told him1 saying3 ,thus and thus said the girl from the land of ,israel4 #e3e4 ,and the king of ,syria said to him3 ,go2 and ,i will send a letter to the king of ,israel4 ,and he departed1 and took with him ten talents of silver1 and six thousand pieces of gold1 and ten changes of raiment2 #e3f4 ,and brought the letter to the king of ,israel1 in these words3 ,when thou shalt receive this letter1 know that ,i have sent to thee ,naaman1 my servant1 that thou mayst heal him of his leprosy4 #e3g4 ,and when the king of ,israel had read the letter1 he rent his garments1 and said3 ,am ,i ,god1 to be able to kill and give life1 that this man hath sent to me to heal a man of his leprosy8 mark1 and see how he seeketh occasions against me4 #e3h4 ,and when ,eliseus1 the man of ,god1 had heard this1 to wit1 that the king of ,israel had rent his garments1 he sent to him1 saying3 ,why hast thou rent thy garments8 let him come to me1 and let him know that there is a prophet in ,israel4 #e3i4 ,so ,naaman came with his horses and chariots1 and stood at the door of the house of ,eliseus3 #e3aj4 ,and ,eliseus sent a messenger to him1 saying3 ,go1 and wash seven times in the ,jordan1 and thy flesh shall recover health1 and thou shalt be clean4 #e3aa4 ,naaman was angry1 and went away1 saying3 ,i thought he would have come out to me1 and standing1 would have invoked the name of the ,lord his ,god1 and touched with his hand the place of the leprosy1 and healed me4 #e3ab4 ,are not the ,abana1 and the ,pharphar1 rivers of ,damascus1 better than all the waters of ,israel1 that ,i may wash in them1 and be made clean8 ,so as he turned1 and was going away with indignation1 #e3ac4 ,his servants came to him1 and said to him3 ,father1 if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing1 surely thou shouldst have done it3 how much rather what he now hath said to thee3 ,wash1 and thou shalt be clean8 #e3ad4 ,then he went down1 and washed in the ,jordan seven times1 according to the word of the man of ,god2 and his flesh was restored1 like the flesh of a little child3 and he was made clean4 #e3ae4 ,and returning to the man of ,god1 with all his train1 he came1 and stood before him1 and said3 ,in truth1 ,i know there is no other ,god1 in all the earth1 but only in ,israel3 ,i beseech thee1 therefore1 take a blessing of thy servant4 ,a blessing444 a present4 #e3af4 ,but he answered3 ,as the ,lord liveth1 before whom ,i stand1 ,i will receive none4 ,and when he pressed him1 he still refused4 #e3ag4 ,and ,naaman said3 ,as thou wilt3 but ,i beseech thee1 grant to me1 thy servant1 to take from hence two mules' burden of earth3 for thy servant will not henceforth offer holocaust1 or victim1 to other gods1 but to the ,lord4 #e3ah4 ,but there is only this1 for which thou shalt entreat the ,lord for thy servant2 when my master goeth into the temple of ,remmon1 to worship there1 and he leaneth on my hand3 if ,i bow down in the temple of ,remmon1 when he boweth down in the same place1 that the ,lord pardon me1 thy servant1 for this thing4 #e3ai4 ,and he said to him3 ,go in peace4 ,so he departed from him1 in the spring time of the earth4 ,go in peace444 ,what the prophet here allowed1 was not an outward conformity to an idolatrous worship2 but only a service which by his office he owed to his master3 who on all public occasions leaned on him3 so that his bowing down when his master bowed himself down was not in effect adoring the idols3 nor was it so understood by the standers by1 since he publicly professed himself a worshipper of the only true and living ,god1 but it was no more than doing a civil office to the king his master1 whose leaning upon him obliged him to bow at the same time that he bowed4 #e3bj4 ,but ,giezi1 the servant of the man of ,god1 said3 ,my master hath spared ,naaman this ,syrian1 in not receiving of him that which he brought3 as the ,lord liveth1 ,i will run after him1 and take something of him4 #e3ba4 ,and ,giezi followed after ,naaman3 and when he saw him running after him1 he leapt down from his chariot to meet him1 and said3 ,is all well8 #e3bb4 ,and he said3 ,well3 my master hath sent me to thee1 saying3 ,just now there are come to me from mount ,ephraim1 two young men of the sons of the prophets3 give them a talent of silver1 and two changes of garments4 #e3bc4 ,and ,naaman said3 ,it is better that thou take two talents4 ,and he forced him1 and bound two talents of silver in two bags1 and two changes of garments1 and laid them upon two of his servants1 and they carried them before him4 #e3bd4 ,and when he was come1 and now it was the evening1 he took them from their hands1 and laid them up in the house1 and sent the men away1 and they departed4 #e3be4 ,but he went in1 and stood before his master4 ,and ,eliseus said3 ,whence comest thou1 ,giezi8 ,he answered3 ,thy servant went no whither4 #e3bf4 ,but he said3 ,was not my heart present1 when the man turned back1 from his chariot1 to meet thee8 ,so now thou hast received money1 and received garments1 to buy oliveyards and vineyards1 and sheep1 and oxen1 and men-servants1 and maid-servants4 #e3bg4 ,but the leprosy of ,naaman1 shall also stick to thee1 and to thy seed for ever4 ,and he went out from him a leper1 as white as snow4 #d ,kings ,chapter #f ,eliseus maketh iron to swim upon the water3 he leadeth the ,syrians that were sent to apprehend him into ,samaria1 where there eyes being opened1 they are courteously entertained4 ,the ,syrians besiege ,samaria3 the famine there causeth a woman to eat her own child4 ,upon this the king commandeth ,eliseus to be put to death4 #f3a4 ,and the sons of the prophets said to ,eliseus3 ,behold1 the place where we dwell with thee is too strait for us4 #f3b4 ,let us go as far as the ,jordan1 and take out of the wood every man a piece of timber1 that we may build us there a place to dwell in4 ,and he said3 ,go4 #f3c4 ,and one of them said3 ,but come thou also with thy servants4 ,he answered3 ,i will come4 #f3d4 ,so he went with them4 ,and when they were come to the ,jordan1 they cut down wood4 #f3e4 ,and it happened1 as one was felling some timber1 that the head of the ax fell into the water3 and he cried out1 and said3 ,alas1 alas1 alas1 my lord1 for this same was borrowed4 #f3f4 ,and the man of ,god said3 ,where did it fall8 and he shewed him the place3 ,then he cut off a piece of wood1 and cast it in thither3 and the iron swam4 #f3g4 ,and he said3 ,take it up4 ,and he put out his hand1 and took it4 #f3h4 ,and the king of ,syria warred against ,israel1 and took counsel with his servants1 saying3 ,in such and such a place1 let us lay an ambush4 #f3i4 ,and the man of ,god sent to the king of ,israel1 saying3 ,beware that thou pass not to such a place3 for the ,syrians are there in ambush4 #f3aj4 ,and the king of ,israel1 sent to the place which the man of ,god had told him1 and prevented him1 and looked well to himself there not once nor twice4 #f3aa4 ,and the heart of the king of ,syria1 was troubled for this thing4 ,and calling together his servants1 he said3 ,why do you not tell me who it is that betrays me to the king of ,israel8 #f3ab4 ,and one of his servants said3 ,no one1 my lord1 ,o king3 but ,eliseus1 the prophet1 that is in ,israel1 telleth the king of ,israel all the words1 that thou speakest in thy privy chamber4 #f3ac4 ,and he said to them3 ,go1 and see where he is3 that ,i may send and take him4 ,and they told him3 saying3 ,behold he is in ,dothan4 #f3ad4 ,therefore1 he sent thither horses1 and chariots1 and the strength of an army3 and they came by night1 and beset the city4 #f3ae4 ,and the servant of the man of ,god1 rising early went out1 and saw an army round about the city1 and horses and chariots3 and he told him1 saying3 ,alas1 alas1 alas1 my lord1 what shall we do8 #f3af4 ,but he answered3 ,fear not3 for there are more with us than with them4 #f3ag4 ,and ,eliseus prayed1 and said3 ,lord1 open his eyes1 that he may see4 ,and the ,lord opened the eyes of the servant1 and he saw3 and behold1 the mountain was full of horses1 and chariots of fire round about ,eliseus4 #f3ah4 ,and the enemies came down to him3 but ,eliseus prayed to the ,lord1 saying3 ,strike1 ,i beseech thee1 this people with blindness3 and the ,lord struck them with blindness1 according to the word of ,eliseus4 ,blindness444 ,the blindness here spoken of was of a particular kind1 which hindered them from seeing the objects that were really before them2 and represented other different objects to their imagination3 so that they no longer perceived the city of ,dothan1 nor were able to know the person of ,eliseus2 but were easily led by him1 whom they took to be another man1 to ,samaria4 ,so that he truly told them1 this is not the way1 neither is this the city1 etc41 because he spoke with relation to the way and to the city1 which was represented to them4 #f3ai4 ,and ,eliseus said to them3 ,this is not the way1 neither is this the city3 follow me1 and ,i will shew you the man whom you seek4 ,so he led them into ,samaria4 #f3bj4 ,and when they were come into ,samaria1 ,eliseus said3 ,lord1 open the eyes of these men1 that they may see4 ,and the ,lord opened their eyes1 and they saw themselves to be in the midst of ,samaria4 #f3ba4 ,and the king of ,israel said to ,eliseus1 when he saw them3 ,my father1 shall ,i kill them8 #f3bb4 ,and he said3 ,thou shalt not kill them3 for thou didst not take them with thy sword1 or thy bow1 that thou mayst kill them3 but set bread and water before them1 that they may eat and drink1 and go to their master4 #f3bc4 ,and a great provision of meats was set before them1 and they ate and drank2 and he let them go3 and they went away to their master3 and the robbers of ,syria came no more into the land of ,israel4 #f3bd4 ,and it came to pass1 after these things1 that ,benadad1 king of ,syria1 gathered together all his army1 and went up and besieged ,samaria4 #f3be4 ,and there was a great famine in ,samaria3 and so long did the siege continue1 till the head of an ass was sold for fourscore pieces of silver1 and the fourth part of a cabe of pigeons' dung1 for five pieces of silver4 #f3bf4 ,and as the king of ,israel was passing by the wall1 a certain woman cried out to him1 saying3 ,save me1 my lord1 ,o king4 #f3bg4 ,and he said3 ,if the ,lord doth not save thee1 how can ,i save thee8 out of the barnfloor1 or out of the winepress8 ,and the king said to her3 ,what aileth thee8 ,and she answered3 #f3bh4 ,this woman said to me3 ,give thy son1 that we may eat him today1 and we will eat my son tomorrow4 #f3bi4 ,so we boiled my son1 and ate him4 ,and ,i said to her on the next day3 ,give thy son1 that we may eat him4 ,and she hath hid her son4 #f3cj4 ,when the king heard this1 he rent his garments1 and passed by upon the wall4 ,and all the people saw the haircloth which he wore within next to his flesh4 #f3ca4 ,and the king said3 ,may ,god do so and so to me1 and may he add more1 if the head of ,eliseus1 the son of ,saphat1 shall stand on him this day4 #f3cb4 ,but ,eliseus sat in his house1 and the ancients sat with him4 ,so he sent a man before3 and before that messenger came1 he said to the ancients3 ,do you know that this son of a murderer hath sent to cut off my head8 ,look then when the messenger shall come1 shut the door1 and suffer him not to come in3 for behold the sound of his master's feet is behind him4 #f3cc4 ,while he was yet speaking to them1 the messenger appeared1 who was coming to him4 ,and he said3 ,behold1 so great an evil is from the ,lord3 what shall ,i look for more from the ,lord8 #d ,kings ,chapter #g ,eliseus prophesieth a great plenty1 which presently ensueth upon the sudden flight of the ,syrians2 of which four lepers bring the news to the city4 ,the incredulous nobleman is trod to death4 #g3a4 ,and ,eliseus said3 ,hear ye the word of the ,lord3 ,thus saith the ,lord3 ,tomorrow1 about this time1 a bushel of fine flour shall be sold for a stater1 and two bushels of barley for a stater1 in the gate of ,samaria4 ,a stater444 ,it is the same as a sicle or shekel4 #g3b4 ,then one of the lords1 upon whose hand the king leaned1 answering the man of ,god1 said3 ,if the ,lord should make flood-gates in heaven1 can that possibly be which thou sayest8 ,and he said3 ,thou shalt see it with thy eyes1 but shalt not eat thereof4 #g3c4 ,now there were four lepers1 at the entering in of the gate3 and they said one to another3 ,what mean we to stay here till we die8 #g3d4 ,if we will enter into the city1 we shall die with the famine3 and if we will remain here1 we must also die3 come therefore1 and let us run over to the camp of the ,syrians4 ,if they spare us1 we shall live3 but if they kill us1 we shall but die4 #g3e4 ,so they arose in the evening1 to go to the ,syrian camp4 ,and when they were come to the first part of the camp of the ,syrians1 they found no man there4 #g3f4 ,for the ,lord had made them hear1 in the camp of ,syria1 the noise of chariots1 and of horses1 and of a very great army3 and they said one to another3 ,behold1 the king of ,israel hath hired against us the kings of the ,hethites1 and of the ,egyptians2 and they are come upon us4 #g3g4 ,wherefore they arose1 and fled away in the dark1 and left their tents1 and their horses and asses in the camp1 and fled1 desiring to save their lives4 #g3h4 ,so when these lepers were come to the beginning of the camp1 they went into one tent1 and ate and drank3 and they took from thence silver1 and gold1 and raiment1 and went1 and hid it3 and they came again1 and went into another tent1 and carried from thence in like manner1 and hid it4 #g3i4 ,then they said one to another3 ,we do not well3 for this is a day of good tidings4 ,if we hold our peace1 and do not tell it till the morning1 we shall be charged with a crime3 come1 let us go1 and tell it in the king's court4 #g3aj4 ,so they came to the gate of the city1 and told them1 saying3 ,we went to the camp of the ,syrians1 and we found no man there1 but horses1 and asses tied1 and the tents standing4 #g3aa4 ,then the guards of the gate went1 and told it within in the king's palace4 #g3ab4 ,and he arose in the night1 and said to his servants3 ,i tell you what the ,syrians have done to us3 ,they know that we suffer great famine1 and therefore they are gone out of the camp1 and lie hid in the fields1 saying3 ,when they come out of the city1 we shall take them alive1 and then we may get into the city4 #g3ac4 ,and one of his servants answered3 ,let us take the five horses that are remaining in the city 7because there are no more in the whole multitude of ,israel1 for the rest are consumed71 and let us send and see4 #g3ad4 ,they brought therefore two horses1 and the king sent into the camp of the ,syrians1 saying3 ,go1 and see4 #g3ae4 ,and they went after them1 as far as the ,jordan3 and behold1 all the way was full of garments1 and vessels1 which the ,syrians had cast away1 in their fright1 and the messengers returned1 and told the king4 #g3af4 ,and the people going out1 pillaged the camp of the ,syrians3 and a bushel of fine flour was sold for a stater1 and two bushels of barley for a stater1 according to the word of the ,lord4 #g3ag4 ,and the king appointed that lord on whose hand he leaned1 to stand at the gate3 and the people trod upon him in the entrance of the gate2 and he died1 as the man of ,god had said1 when the king came down to him4 #g3ah4 ,and it came to pass1 according to the word of the man of ,god1 which he spoke to the king1 when he said3 ,two bushels of barley shall be for a stater1 and a bushel of fine flour for a stater1 at this very time tomorrow1 in the gate of ,samaria4 #g3ai4 ,when that lord answered the man of ,god1 and said3 ,although the ,lord should make flood-gates in heaven1 could this come to pass which thou sayest8 ,and he said to him3 ,thou shalt see it with thy eyes1 and shalt not eat thereof4 #g3bj4 ,and so it fell out to him1 as it was foretold1 and the people trod upon him in the gate1 and he died4 #d ,kings ,chapter #h ,after seven years' famine foretold by ,eliseus1 the ,sunamitess returning home1 recovereth her lands1 and revenues4 ,eliseus foresheweth the death of ,benadad1 king of ,syria1 and the reign of ,hazael4 ,joram's wicked reign in ,juda4 ,he dieth1 and his son ,ochozias succeedeth4 #h3a4 ,and ,eliseus spoke to the woman1 whose son he had restored to life1 saying3 ,arise1 and go thou1 and thy household1 and sojourn wheresoever thou canst find3 for the ,lord hath called a famine1 and it shall come upon the land seven years4 #h3b4 ,and she arose1 and did according to the word of the man of ,god3 and going with her household1 she sojourned in the land of the ,philistines many days4 #h3c4 ,and when the seven years were ended1 the woman returned out of the land of the ,philistines1 and she went forth to speak to the king for her house and for her lands4 #h3d4 ,and the king talked with ,giezi1 the servant of the man of ,god1 saying3 ,tell me all the great things that ,eliseus hath done4 #h3e4 ,and when he was telling the king how he had raised one dead to life1 the woman appeared1 whose son he had restored to life1 crying to the king for her house1 and her lands4 ,and ,giezi said3 ,my lord1 ,o king1 this is the woman1 and this is her son1 whom ,eliseus raised to life4 #h3f4 ,and the king asked the woman3 and she told him4 ,and the king appointed her an eunuch1 saying3 ,restore her all that is hers1 and all the revenues of the lands1 from the day that she left the land to this present4 #h3g4 ,eliseus also came to ,damascus1 and ,benadad1 king of ,syria was sick2 and they told him1 saying3 ,the man of ,god is come hither4 #h3h4 ,and the king said to ,hazael3 ,take with thee presents1 and go to meet the man of ,god1 and consult the ,lord by him1 saying3 ,can ,i recover of this my illness8 #h3i4 ,and ,hazael went to meet him1 taking with him presents1 and all the good things of ,damascus1 the burdens of forty camels4 ,and when he stood before him1 he said3 ,thy son1 ,benadad1 the king of ,syria1 hath sent me to thee1 saying3 ,can ,i recover of this my illness8 #h3aj4 ,and ,eliseus said to him3 ,go tell him3 ,thou shalt recover3 but the ,lord hath shewed me that he shall surely die4 ,tell him3 thou shalt recover444 ,by these words the prophet signified that the king's disease was not mortal3 and that he would recover if no violence were used4 ,or he might only express himself in this manner1 by way of giving ,hazael to understand that he knew both what he would say and do2 that he would indeed tell the king he should recover2 but would be himself the instrument of his death4 #h3aa4 ,and he stood with him1 and was troubled so far as to blush3 and the man of ,god wept4 #h3ab4 ,and ,hazael said to him3 ,why doth my lord weep8 ,and he said3 ,because ,i know the evil that thou wilt do to the children of ,israel4 ,their strong cities thou wilt burn with fire1 and their young men thou wilt kill with the sword1 and thou wilt dash their children1 and rip up their pregnant women4 #h3ac4 ,and ,hazael said3 ,but what am ,i1 thy servant1 a dog1 that ,i should do this great thing8 ,and ,eliseus said3 ,the ,lord hath shewed me that thou shalt be king of ,syria4 #h3ad4 ,and when he was departed from ,eliseus he came to his master1 who said to him3 ,what said ,eliseus to thee8 ,and he answered3 ,he told me3 ,thou shalt recover4 #h3ae4 ,and on the next day1 he took a blanket1 and poured water on it1 and spread it upon his face3 and he died1 and ,hazael reigned in his stead4 #h3af4 ,in the fifth year of ,joram1 son of ,achab1 king of ,israel1 and of ,josaphat1 king of ,juda1 reigned ,joram1 son of ,josaphat1 king of ,juda4 ,and of ,josaphat1 etc444 ,that is1 ,josaphat being yet alive1 who sometime before his death made his son ,joram king1 as ,david had done before by his own son ,solomon4 #h3ag4 ,he was two and thirty years old when he began to reign1 and he reigned eight years in ,jerusalem4 #h3ah4 ,and he walked in the ways of the kings of ,israel1 as the house of ,achab had walked3 for the daughter of ,achab was his wife3 and he did that which was evil in the sight of the ,lord4 #h3ai4 ,but the ,lord would not destroy ,juda1 for ,david his servant's sake1 as he had promised him1 to give him a light1 and to his children always4 #h3bj4 ,in his days ,edom revolted from being under ,juda1 and made themselves a king4 #h3ba4 ,and ,joram came to ,seira1 and all the chariots with him3 and he arose in the night1 and defeated the ,edomites that had surrounded him1 and the captains of the chariots1 but the people fled into their tents4 #h4bb4 ,so ,edom revolted from being under ,juda1 unto this day4 ,then ,lobna also revolted at the same time4 #h3bc4 ,but the rest of the acts of ,joram1 and all that he did1 are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of ,juda8 #h3bd4 ,and ,joram slept with his fathers1 and was buried with them in the city of ,david1 and ,ochozias1 his son1 reigned in his stead4 #h3be4 ,in the twelfth year of ,joram1 the son of ,achab1 king of ,israel1 reigned ,ochozias1 son of ,joram1 king of ,juda4 #h3bf4 ,ochozias was two and twenty years old when he began to reign1 and he reigned one year in ,jerusalem3 the name of his mother was ,athalia the daughter of ,amri king of ,israel4 ,daughter444 ,that is1 grand-daughter2 for she was daughter of ,achab son of ,amri1 ver4 #ah4 #h3bg4 ,and he walked in the ways of the house of ,achab3 and he did evil before the ,lord1 as did the house of ,achab3 for he was the son in law of the house of ,achab4 #h3bh4 ,he went also with ,joram1 son of ,achab1 to fight against ,hazael1 king of ,syria1 in ,ramoth ,galaad1 and the ,syrians wounded ,joram3 #h3bi4 ,and he went back to be healed1 in ,jezrahel3 because the ,syrians had wounded him in ,ramoth1 when he fought against ,hazael1 king of ,syria ,and ,ochozias1 the son of ,joram1 king of ,juda1 went down to visit ,joram1 the son of ,achab1 in ,jezrahel1 because he was sick there4 #d ,kings ,chapter #i ,jehu is anointed king of ,israel1 to destroy the house of ,achab and ,jezebel4 ,he killeth ,joram king of ,israel1 and ,ochozias king of ,juda4 ,jezebel is eaten by dogs4 #i3a4 ,and ,eliseus the prophet1 called one of the sons of the prophets1 and said to him3 ,gird up thy loins1 and take this little bottle of oil in thy hand1 and go to ,ramoth ,galaad4 #i3b4 ,and when thou art come thither1 thou shalt see ,jehu the son of ,josaphat the son of ,namsi3 and going in1 thou shalt make him rise up from amongst his brethren1 and carry him into an inner chamber4 #i3c4 ,then taking the little bottle of oil1 thou shalt pour it on his head1 and shalt say3 ,thus saith the ,lord3 ,i have anointed thee king over ,israel4 ,and thou shalt open the door and flee1 and shalt not stay there4 #i3d4 ,so the young man1 the servant of the prophet1 went away to ,ramoth ,galaad1 #i3e4 ,and went in thither3 and behold1 the captains of the army were sitting1 and he said3 ,i have a word to thee1 ,o prince4 ,and ,jehu said3 ,unto whom of us all8 ,and he said3 ,to thee1 ,o prince4 #i3f4 ,and he arose1 and went into the chamber3 and he poured the oil upon his head1 and said3 ,thus saith the ,lord ,god of ,israel3 ,i have anointed thee king over ,israel1 the people of the ,lord4 #i3g4 ,and thou shalt cut off the house of ,achab1 thy master1 and ,i will revenge the blood of my servants1 the prophets1 and the blood of all the servants of the ,lord1 at the hand of ,jezabel4 #i3h4 ,and ,i will destroy all the house of ,achab1 and ,i will cut off from ,achab1 him that pisseth against the wall1 and him that is shut up1 and the meanest in ,israel4 #i3i4 ,and ,i will make the house of ,achab1 like the house of ,jeroboam1 the son of ,nabat1 and like the house of ,baasa1 the son of ,ahias4 #i3aj4 ,and the dogs shall eat ,jezabel1 in the field of ,jezrahel1 and there shall be no one to bury her4 ,and he opened the door and fled4 #i3aa4 ,then ,jehu went forth to the servants of his ,lord3 and they said to him3 ,are all things well8 why came this madman to thee8 ,and he said to them3 ,you know the man1 and what he said4 #i3ab4 ,but they answered3 ,it is false2 but rather do thou tell us4 ,and he said to them3 ,thus and thus did he speak to me3 and he said3 ,thus saith the ,lord3 ,i have anointed thee king over ,israel4 #i3ac4 ,then they made haste1 and taking every man his garment1 laid it under his feet1 after the manner of a judgment seat1 and they sounded the trumpet1 and said3 ,jehu is king4 #i3ad4 ,so ,jehu1 the son of ,josaphat1 the son of ,namsi1 conspired against ,joram4 ,now ,joram had besieged ,ramoth ,galaad1 he1 and all ,israel1 fighting with ,hazael1 king of ,syria3 #i3ae4 ,and was returned to be healed in ,jezrahel of his wounds2 for the ,syrians had wounded him1 when he fought with ,hazael1 king of ,syria4 ,and ,jehu said3 ,if it please you1 let no man go forth or flee out of the city1 lest he go1 and tell in ,jezrahel4 #i3af4 ,and he got up1 and went into ,jezrahel for ,joram was sick there1 and ,ochozias king of ,juda1 was come down to visit ,joram4 #i3ag4 ,the watchman therefore1 that stood upon the tower of ,jezrahel1 saw the troop of ,jehu coming1 and said3 ,i see a troop4 ,and ,joram said3 ,take a chariot1 and send to meet them1 and let him that goeth say3 ,is all well8 #i3ah4 ,so there went one in a chariot to meet him1 and said3 ,thus saith the king3 ,are all things peaceable8 ,and ,jehu said3 ,what hast thou to do with peace8 go behind and follow me4 ,and the watchman told1 saying3 ,the messenger came to them1 but he returneth not4 #i3ai4 ,and he sent a second chariot of horses3 and he came to them1 and said3 ,thus saith the king3 ,is there peace8 ,and ,jehu said3 ,what hast thou to do with peace8 pass1 and follow me4 #i3bj4 ,and the watchman told1 saying3 ,he came even to them1 but returneth not3 and the driving is like the driving of ,jehu1 the son of ,namsi2 for he drives furiously4 #i3ba4 ,and ,joram said3 ,make ready the chariot4 ,and they made ready his chariot3 and ,joram1 king of ,israel1 and ,ochozias1 king of ,juda1 went out1 each in his chariot1 and they went out to meet ,jehu1 and met him in the field of ,naboth1 the ,jezrahelite4 #i3bb4 ,and when ,joram saw ,jehu1 he said3 ,is there peace1 ,jehu8 ,and he answered3 ,what peace8 so long as the fornications of ,jezabel1 thy mother1 and her many sorceries1 are in their vigour4 #i3bc4 ,and ,joram turned his hand1 and fleeing1 said to ,ochozias3 ,there is treachery1 ,ochozias4 #i3bd4 ,but ,jehu bent his bow with his hand1 and shot ,joram between the shoulders3 and the arrow went out through his heart1 and immediately he fell in his chariot4 #i3be4 ,and ,jehu said to ,badacer1 his captain3 ,take him1 and cast him into the field of ,naboth1 the ,jezrahelite3 for ,i remember1 when ,i and thou1 sitting in a chariot1 followed ,achab1 this man's father1 that the ,lord laid this burden upon him1 saying3 #i3bf4 ,if ,i do not requite thee in this field1 saith the ,lord1 for the blood of ,naboth1 and for the blood of his children1 which ,i saw yesterday1 saith the ,lord4 ,so now take him1 and cast him into the field1 according to the word of the ,lord4 #i3bg4 ,but ,ochozias1 king of ,juda1 seeing this1 fled by the way of the garden house3 and ,jehu pursued him1 and said3 ,strike him also in his chariot4 ,and they struck him in the going up to ,gaver1 which is by ,jeblaam3 and he fled into ,mageddo1 and died there4 #i3bh4 ,and his servants laid him upon his chariot1 and carried him to ,jerusalem3 and they buried him in his sepulchre with his fathers1 in the city of ,david4 #i3bi4 ,in the eleventh year of ,joram1 the son of ,achab1 ,ochozias reigned over ,juda2 #i3cj4 ,and ,jehu came into ,jezrahel4 ,but ,jezabel1 hearing of his coming in1 painted her face with stibic stone1 and adorned her head1 and looked out of a window4 #i3ca4 ,at ,jehu coming in at the gate1 and said3 ,can there be peace for ,zambri1 that hath killed his master8 #i3cb4 ,and ,jehu lifted up his face to the window1 and said3 ,who is this8 ,and two or three eunuchs bowed down to him4 #i3cc4 ,and he said to them3 ,throw her down headlong2 ,and they threw her down1 and the wall was sprinkled with her blood1 and the hoofs of the horses trod upon her4 #i3cd4 ,and when he was come in to eat1 and to drink1 he said3 ,go1 and see after that cursed woman1 and bury her2 because she is a king's daughter4 #i3ce4 ,and when they went to bury her1 they found nothing but the skull1 and the feet1 and the extremities of her hands4 #i3cf4 ,and coming back they told him4 ,and ,jehu said3 ,it is the word of the ,lord1 which he spoke by his servant ,elias1 the ,thesbite1 saying3 ,in the field of ,jezrahel the dogs shall eat the flesh of ,jezabel4 #i3cg4 ,and the flesh of ,jezabel shall be as dung upon the face of the earth in the field of ,jezrahel2 so that they who pass by shall say3 ,is this that same ,jezabel8 #d ,kings ,chapter #aj ,jehu destroyeth the house of ,achab3 abolisheth the worship of ,baal1 and killeth the worshippers3 but sticketh to the calves of ,jeroboam4 ,israel is afflicted by the ,syrians4 #aj3a4 ,and ,achab had seventy sons in ,samaria3 so ,jehu wrote letters1 and sent to ,samaria1 to the chief men of the city1 and to the ancients1 and to them that brought up ,achab's children1 saying3 #aj3b4 ,as soon as you receive these letters1 ye that have your master's sons1 and chariots1 and horses1 and fenced cities1 and armour1 #aj3c4 ,choose the best1 and him that shall please you most of your master's sons1 and set him on his father's throne1 and fight for the house of your master4 #aj3d4 ,but they were exceedingly afraid1 and said3 ,behold two kings could not stand before him1 and how shall we be able to resist8 #aj3e4 ,therefore they that were over the king's house1 and the rulers of the city1 and the ancients1 and the bringers up of the children1 sent to ,jehu1 saying3 ,we are thy servants3 whatsoever thou shalt command us we will do2 we will not make us any king3 do thou all that pleaseth thee4 #aj3f4 ,and he wrote letters the second time to them1 saying3 ,if you be mine1 and will obey me1 take the heads of the sons of your master1 and come to me to ,jezrahel by tomorrow at this time4 ,now the king's sons1 being seventy men1 were brought up with the chief men of the city4 #aj3g4 ,and when the letters came to them1 they took the king's sons1 and slew seventy persons1 and put their heads in baskets1 and sent them to him to ,jezrahel4 #aj3h4 ,and a messenger came1 and told him1 saying3 ,they have brought the heads of the king's sons4 ,and he said3 ,lay ye them in two heaps by the entering in of the gate until the morning4 #aj3i4 ,and when it was light1 he went out1 and standing1 said to all the people3 ,you are just3 if ,i conspired against my master1 and slew him2 who hath slain all these8 #aj3aj4 ,see therefore now that there hath not fallen to the ground any of the words of the ,lord1 which the ,lord spoke concerning the house of ,achab1 and the ,lord hath done that which he spoke in the hand of his servant ,elias4 #aj3aa4 ,so ,jehu slew all that were left of the honse of ,achab in ,jezrahel1 and all his chief men1 and his friends1 and his priests1 till there were no remains left of him4 #aj3ab4 ,and he arose1 and went to ,samaria3 and when he was come to the shepherds' cabin in the way1 #aj3ac4 ,he met with the brethren of ,ochozias1 king of ,juda1 and he said to them3 ,who are you8 ,and they answered3 ,we are the brethren of ,ochozias1 and are come down to salute the sons of the king1 and the sons of the queen4 #aj3ad4 ,and he said3 ,take them alive4 ,and they took them alive1 and killed them at the pit by the cabin1 two and forty men1 and he left not any of them4 #aj3ae4 ,and when he was departed thence1 he found ,jonadab1 the son of ,rechab1 coming to meet him1 and he blessed him4 ,and he said to him3 ,is thy heart right as my heart is with thy heart8 ,and ,jonadab said3 ,it is4 ,if it be1 said he1 give me thy hand4 ,he gave him his hand4 ,and he lifted him up to him into the chariot1 #aj3af4 ,and said to him3 ,come with me1 and see my zeal for the ,lord4 ,so he made him ride in his chariot1 #aj3ag4 ,and brought him into ,samaria4 ,and he slew all that were left of ,achab1 in ,samaria1 to a man1 according to the word of the ,lord which he spoke by ,elias4 #aj3ah4 ,and ,jehu gathered together all the people1 and said to them3 ,achab worshipped ,baal a little1 but ,i will worship him more4 ,i will worship him more444 ,jehu sinned in thus pretending to worship ,baal1 and causing sacrifice to be offered to him3 because evil is not to be done1 that good may come of it4 ,rom4 #c4h4 #aj3ai4 ,now therefore call to me all the prophets of ,baal1 and all his servants1 and all his priests3 let none be wanting1 for ,i have a great sacrifice to offer to ,baal3 whosoever shall be wanting1 shall not live4 ,now ,jehu did this craftily1 that he might destroy the worshippers of ,baal4 #aj3bj4 ,and he said3 ,proclaim a festival for ,baal4 ,and he called1 #aj3ba4 ,and he sent into all the borders of ,israel2 and all the servants of ,baal came3 there was not one left that did not come4 ,and they went into the temple of ,baal3 and the house of ,baal was filled1 from one end to the other4 #aj3bb4 ,and he said to them that were over the wardrobe3 ,bring forth garments for all the servants of ,baal4 ,and they brought them forth garments4 #aj3bc4 ,and ,jehu1 and ,jonadab1 the son of ,rechab1 went to the temple of ,baal1 and said to the worshippers of ,baal3 ,search1 and see that there be not any with you of the servants of the ,lord1 but that there be the servants of ,baal only4 #aj3bd4 ,and they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings3 but ,jehu had prepared him fourscore men without1 and said to them3 ,if any of the men escape1 whom ,i have brought into your hands1 he that letteth him go1 shall answer life for life4 #aj3be4 ,and it came to pass1 when the burnt offering was ended1 that ,jehu commanded his soldiers and captains1 saying3 ,go in1 and kill them3 let none escape4 ,and the soldiers and captains slew them with the edge of the sword1 and cast them out3 and they went into the city of the temple of ,baal1 #aj3bf4 ,and brought the statue out of ,baal's temple1 and burnt it1 #aj3bg4 ,and broke it in pieces4 ,they destroyed also the temple of ,baal1 and made a jakes in its place unto this day4 #aj3bh4 ,so ,jehu destroyed ,baal out of ,israel3 #aj3bi4 ,but yet he departed not from the sins of ,jeroboam1 the son of ,nabat1 who made ,israel to sin1 nor did he forsake the golden calves that were in ,bethel1 and ,dan4 #aj3cj4 ,and the ,lord said to ,jehu3 because thou hast diligently executed that which was right and pleasing in my eyes1 and hast done to the house of ,achab according to all that was in my heart3 thy children shall sit upon the throne of ,israel to the fourth generation4 #aj3ca4 ,but ,jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the ,lord1 the ,god of ,israel1 with all his heart3 for he departed not from the sins of ,jeroboam1 who had made ,israel to sin4 #aj3cb4 ,in those days the ,lord began to be weary of ,israel3 and ,hazael ravaged them in all the coasts of ,israel1 #aj3cc4 ,from the ,jordan eastward1 all the land of ,galaad1 and ,gad1 and ,ruben1 and ,manasses1 from ,aroer1 which is upon the torrent ,arnon1 and ,galaad1 and ,basan4 #aj3cd4 ,but the rest of the acts of ,jehu1 and all that he did1 and his strength1 are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of ,israel8 #aj3ce4 ,and ,jehu slept with his fathers1 and they buried him in ,samaria3 and ,joachaz1 his son1 reigned in his stead4 #aj3cf4 ,and the time that ,jehu reigned over ,israel1 in ,samaria1 was eight and twenty years4 #d ,kings #aa ,athalia's usurpation and tyranny4 ,joas is made king4 ,athalia is slain4 #aa3a4 ,now ,athalia1 the mother of ,ochozias1 seeing that her son was dead1 arose and slew all the royal seed4 #aa3b4 ,but ,josaba the daughter of king ,joram1 sister of ,ochozias1 took ,joas1 the son of ,ochozias1 and stole him from among the king's sons that were slain1 out of the bedchamber with his nurse3 and hid him from the face of ,athalia2 so that he was not slain4 #aa3c4 ,and he was with her six years1 hid in the house of the ,lord4 ,and ,athalia reigned over the land4 #aa3d4 ,and in the seventh year ,joiada sent1 and taking the centurions and soldiers1 brought them in to him into the temple of the ,lord1 and made a covenant with them3 and taking an oath of them in the house of the ,lord1 shewed them the king's son3 #aa3e4 ,and he commanded them1 saying3 ,this is the thing that you must do4 #aa3f4 ,let a third part of you go in on the sabbath1 and keep the watch of the king's house4 ,and let a third part be at the gate of ,sur2 and let a third part be at the gate behind the dwelling of the shieldbearers2 and you shall keep the watch of the house of ,messa4 #aa3g4 ,but let two parts of you all that go forth on the sabbath1 keep the watch of the house of the ,lord about the king4 #aa3h4 ,and you shall compass him round about1 having weapons in your hands3 and if any man shall enter the precinct of the temple1 let him be slain3 and you shall be with the king1 coming in and going out4 #aa3i4 ,and the centurions did according to all things that ,joiada the priest1 had commanded them3 and takiug every one their men1 that went in on the sabbath1 with them that went out in the sabbath1 came to ,joiada1 the priest4 #aa3aj4 ,and he gave them the spears1 and the arms of king ,david1 which were in the house of the ,lord4 #aa3aa4 ,and they stood1 having every one their weapons in their hands1 from the right side of the temple1 unto the left side of the altar1 and of the temple1 about the king4 #aa3ab4 ,and he brought forth the king's son1 and put the diadem upon him1 and the testimony3 and they made him king1 and anointed him3 and clapping their hands1 they said3 ,god save the king4 ,the testimony444 ,the book of the law4 #aa3ac4 ,and ,athalia heard the noise of the people running3 and going in to the people into the temple of the ,lord1 #aa3ad4 ,she saw the king standing upon a tribunal1 as the manner was1 and the singers1 and the trumpets near him1 and all the people of the land rejoicing1 and sounding the trumpets3 and she rent her garments1 and cried3 ,a conspiracy1 a conspiracy4 ,a tribunal444 ,a tribune1 or a place elevated above the rest4 #aa3ae4 ,but ,joiada commanded the centurions that were over the army1 and said to them3 ,have her forth without the precinct of the temple1 and whosoever shall follow her1 let him be slain with the sword4 ,for the priest had said3 ,let her not be slain in the temple of the ,lord4 #aa3af4 ,and they laid hands on her3 and thrust her out by the way by which the horses go in1 by the palace1 and she was slain there4 #aa3ag4 ,and ,joiada made a covenant between the ,lord1 and the king1 and the people1 that they should be the people of the ,lord2 and between the king and the people4 #aa3ah4 ,and all the people of the land went into the temple of ,baal1 and broke down his altars1 and his images they broke in pieces thoroughly3 they slew also ,mathan the priest of ,baal before the altar4 ,and the priest set guards in the house of the ,lord4 #aa3ai4 ,and he took the centurions1 and the bands of the ,cerethi1 and the ,phelethi1 and all the people of the land1 and they brought the king from the house of the ,lord3 and they came by the way of the gate of the shieldbearers into the palace1 and he sat on the throne of the kings4 #aa3bj4 ,and all the people of the land rejoiced1 and the city was quiet3 but ,athalia was slain with the sword in the king's house4 #aa3ba4 ,now ,joas was seven years old when he began to reign4 #d ,kings ,chapter #ab ,the temple is repaired4 ,hazael is bought off from attacking ,jerusalem4 ,joas is slain4 #ab3a4 ,in the seventh year of ,jehu1 ,joas began to reign3 and he reigned forty years in ,jerusalem4 ,the name of his mother was ,sebia1 of ,bersabee4 #ab3b4 ,and ,joas did that which was right before the ,lord all the days that ,joiada1 the priest1 taught him4 #ab3c4 ,but yet he took not away the high places3 for the people still sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places4 #ab3d4 ,and ,joas said to the priests3 all the money of the sanctified things1 which is brought into the temple of the ,lord by those that pass1 which is offered for the price of a soul1 and which of their own accord1 and of their own free heart1 they bring into the temple of the ,lord3 ,sanctified444 ,that is1 dedicated to ,god's service4-,ibid4 ,the price of a soul444 ,that is1 the ordinary oblation1 which every soul was to offer by the law4 ,ex4 #cj4 #ab3e4 ,let the priests take it according to their order and repair the house1 wheresoever they shall see any thing that wanteth repairing4 #ab3f4 ,now till the three and twentieth year of king ,joas the priests did not make the repairs of the temple4 #ab3g4 ,and king ,joas called ,joiada1 the high priest1 and the priests1 saying to them3 ,why do you not repair the temple8 ,take you1 therefore1 money no more according to your order1 but restore it for the repairing of the temple4 #ab3h4 ,and the priests were forbidden to take any more money of the people1 and to make the repairs of the house4 #ab3i4 ,and ,joiada1 the high priest1 took a chest1 and bored a hole in the top1 and set it by the altar at the right hand of them that came into the house of the ,lord2 and the priests that kept the doors1 put therein all the money that was brought to the temple of the ,lord4 #ab3aj4 ,and when they saw that there was very much money in the chest1 the king's scribe1 and the high priest1 came up1 and poured it out1 and counted the money that was found in the house of the ,lord4 #ab3aa4 ,and they gave it out by number and measure into the hands of them that were over the builders of the house of the ,lord3 and they laid it out to the carpenters1 and the masons1 that wrought in the house of the ,lord1 #ab3ab4 ,and made the repairs3 and to them that cut stones1 and to buy timber1 and stones to be hewed1 that the repairs of the house of the ,lord might be completely finished1 and wheresoever there was need of expenses to uphold the house4 #ab3ac4 ,but there were not made of the same money for the temple of the ,lord1 bowls1 or fleshhooks1 or censers1 or trumpets1 or any vessel of gold and silver1 of the money that was brought into the temple of the ,lord3 #ab3ad4 ,for it was given to them that did the work1 that the temple of the ,lord might be repaired4 #ab3ae4 ,and they reckoned not with the men that received the money to distribute it to the workmen1 but they bestowed it faithfully4 #ab3af4 ,but the money for trespass1 and the money for sins1 they brought not into the temple of the ,lord1 because it was for the priests4 #ab3ag4 ,then ,hazael1 king of ,syria1 went up1 and fought against ,geth1 and took it1 and set his face to go up to ,jerusalem4 #ab3ah4 ,wherefore ,joas1 king of ,juda1 took all the sanctified things1 which ,josaphat1 and ,joram1 and ,ochozias1 his fathers1 the kings of ,juda1 had dedicated to holy uses1 and which he himself had offered3 and all the silver that could be found in the treasures of the temple of the ,lord1 and in the king's palace3 and sent it to ,hazael1 king of ,syria1 and he went off from ,jerusalem4 #ab3ai4 ,and the rest of the acts of ,joas1 and all that he did1 are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of ,juda8 #ab3bj4 ,and his servants arose1 and conspired among themselves1 and slew ,joas1 in the house of ,mello1 in the descent of ,sella4 #ab3ba4 ,for ,josachar the son of ,semaath1 and ,jozabad the son of ,somer his servant1 struck him1 and he died3 and they buried him with his fathers in the city of ,david2 and ,amasias1 his son1 reigned in his stead4 ,the city of ,david444 ,he was buried in the same city with his fathers1 but not in the sepulchres of the kings4 #b ,par4 #ad4 #d ,kings ,chapter #ac ,the reign of ,joachaz and of ,joas kings of ,israel4 ,the last acts and death of ,eliseus the prophet3 a dead man is raised to life by the touch of his bones4 #ac3a4 ,in the three and twentieth year of ,joas son of ,ochozias1 king of ,juda1 ,joachaz1 the son of ,jehu1 reigned over ,israel1 in ,samaria1 seventeen years4 #ac3b4 ,and he did evil before the ,lord1 and followed the sins of ,jeroboam1 the son of ,nabat1 who made ,israel to sin2 and he departed not from them4 #ac3c4 ,and the wrath of the ,lord was kindled against ,israel1 and he delivered them into the hand of ,hazael1 the king of ,syria1 and into the hand of ,benadad1 the son of ,hazael1 all days4 #ac3d4 ,but ,joachaz besought the face of the ,lord1 and the ,lord heard him3 for he saw the distress of ,israel1 because the king of ,syria had oppressed them3 #ac3e4 ,and the ,lord gave ,israel a saviour1 and they were delivered out of the hand of the king of ,syria3 and the children of ,israel dwelt in their pavilions as yesterday and the day before4 #ac3f4 ,but yet they departed not from the sins of the house of ,jeroboam1 who made ,israel to sin1 but walked in them3 and there still remained a grove also in ,samaria4 ,a grove444 ,dedicated to the worship of idols4 #ac3g4 ,and ,joachaz had no more left of the people than fifty horsemen1 and ten chariots1 and ten thousand footmen3 for the king of ,syria had slain them1 and had brought them low as dust by threshing in the barnfloor4 #ac3h4 ,but the rest of the acts of ,joachaz1 and all that he did1 and his valour1 are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of ,israel8 #ac3i4 ,and ,joachaz slept with his fathers1 and they buried him in ,samaria3 and ,joas1 his son1 reigned in his stead4 #ac3aj4 ,in the seven and thirtieth year of ,joas1 king of ,juda1 ,joas the son of ,joachaz reigned over ,israel1 in ,samaria1 sixteen years4 #ac3aa4 ,and he did that which is evil in the sight of the ,lord3 he departed not from all the sins of ,jeroboam1 the son of ,nabat1 who made ,israel to sin2 but he walked in them4 #ac3ab4 ,but the rest of the acts of ,joas1 and all that he did1 and his valour wherewith he fought against ,amasias1 king of ,juda1 are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of ,israel8 #ac3ac4 ,and ,joas slept with his fathers2 and ,jeroboam sat upon his throne4 ,but ,joas was buried in ,samaria1 with the kings of ,israel4 #ac3ad4 ,now ,eliseus was sick of the illness whereof he died3 and ,joas1 king of ,israel1 went down to him1 and wept before him1 and said3 ,o my father1 my father1 the chariot of ,israel1 and the guider thereof4 #ac3ae4 ,and ,eliseus said to him3 ,bring a bow and arrows4 ,and when he had brought him a bow and arrows1 #ac3af4 ,he said to the king of ,israel3 ,put thy hand upon the bow4 ,and when he had put his hand1 ,eliseus put his hands over the king's hands1 #ac3ag4 ,and said3 ,open the window to the east4 ,and when he had opened it1 ,eliseus said3 ,shoot an arrow4 ,and he shot4 ,and ,eliseus said3 ,the arrow of the ,lord's deliverance1 and the arrow of the deliverance from ,syria3 and thou shalt strike the ,syrians in ,aphec1 till thou consume them4 #ac3ah4 ,and he said3 ,take the arrows4 ,and when he had taken them1 he said to him3 ,strike with an arrow upon the ground4 ,and he struck three times1 and stood still4 #ac3ai4 ,and the man of ,god was angry with him1 and said3 ,if thou hadst smitten five or six or seven times1 thou hadst smitten ,syria even to utter destruction3 but now three times shalt thou smite it4 ,if thou hadst smitten1 etc444 ,by this it appears that ,god had revealed to the prophet that the king should overcome the ,syrians as many times as he should then strike on the ground2 but as he had not at the same time revealed to him how often the king would strike1 the prophet was concerned to see that he struck but thrice4 #ac3bj4 ,and ,eliseus died1 and they buried him4 ,and the rovers from ,moab came into the land the same year4 #ac3ba4 ,and some that were burying a man1 saw the rovers1 and cast the body into the sepulchre of ,eliseus4 ,and when it had touched the bones of ,eliseus1 the man came to life and stood upon his feet4 #ac3bb4 ,now ,hazael1 king of ,syria1 afflicted ,israel all the days of ,joachaz4 #ac3bc4 ,and the ,lord had mercy on them1 and returned to them1 because of his covenant1 which he had made with ,abraham1 and ,isaac1 and ,jacob3 and he would not destroy them1 nor utterly cast them away1 unto this present time4 #ac3bd4 ,and ,hazael1 king of ,syria1 died2 and ,benadad1 his son1 reigned in his stead4 #ac3be4 ,now ,joas the son of ,joachaz1 took the cities out of the hand of ,benadad1 the son of ,hazael1 which he had taken out of the hand of ,joachaz1 his father1 by war2 three times did ,joas beat him1 and he restored the that ,joas his father1 did3 #ad3d4 ,but this only1 that he took not away the high places2 for yet the people sacrificed1 and burnt incense in the high places3 #ad3e4 ,and when he had possession of the kingdom1 he put his servants to death that had slain the king1 his father4 #ad3f4 ,but the children of the murderers he did not put to death1 according to that which is written in the book of the law of ,moses1 wherein the ,lord commanded1 saying3 ,the fathers shall not be put to death for the children1 neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers3 but every man shall die for his own sin4 #ad3g4 ,he slew of ,edom in the valley of the ,saltpits1 ten thousand men1 and took the rock by war1 and called the name thereof ,jectehel1 unto this day4 #ad3h4 ,then ,amasias sent messengers to ,libanus1 passed1 and trod down the thistle4 #ad3aj4 ,thou hast beaten and prevailed over ,edom1 and thy heart hath lifted thee up2 be content with this glory1 and sit at home2 why provokest thou evil1 that thou shouldst fall1 and ,juda with thee8 #ad3aa4 ,but ,amasias did not rest satisfied4 ,so ,joas1 king of ,israel1 went up2 and he and ,amasias1 king of ,juda1 saw one another in ,bethsames1 a town in ,juda4 #ad3ab4 ,and ,juda was put to the worse before ,israel1 and they fled every man to their dwellings4 #ad3ac4 ,but ,joas1 king of ,israel1 took ,amasias1 king of ,juda1 the #ad3ai4 ,now they made a conspiracy against him in ,jerusalem3 and he fled to ,lachis4 ,and they sent after him to ,lachis1 and killed him there4 #ad3bj4 ,and they brought him away upon horses1 and he was buried in ,jerusalem with his fathers1 in the city of ,david4 #ad3ba4 ,and all the people of ,juda took ,azarias1 who was sixteen years old1 and made him king instead of his father1 ,amasias4 #ad3bb4 ,he built ,elath1 and restored it to ,juda1 after that the king slept with his fathers4 #ad3bc4 ,in the fifteenth year of ,amasias1 son of ,joas1 king of ,juda1 reigned ,jeroboam1 the son of his stead in the twentieth year of ,joatham1 the son of ,ozias4 ,in the twentieth year of ,joatham444 ,that is1 in the twentieth year1 from the beginning of ,joatham's reign4 ,the sacred writer #ae3cg4 ,in those days the ,lord began to send into ,juda1 ,rasin king of ,syria1 and ,phacee the son of ,romelia4 #ae3ch4 ,and ,joatham slept with his fathers1 and was buried with them in the city of ,david1 his father2 and ,achaz1 his son1 reigned in his stead4 #d ,kings ,chapter #af ,the wicked reign of ,achaz3 the kings of ,syria and ,israel war against him3 he hireth the king of the ,assyrians to assist him3 he causeth an altar to be made after the pattern of that of ,damascus4 #af3a4 ,in the seventeenth year of ,phacee1 the son of ,romelia reigned ,achaz1 the son of ,joatham1 king of ,juda4 #af3b4 ,achaz was twenty years old when he began to reign1 and he reigned sixteen years in ,jerusalem3 he did not that which was pleasing in the sight of the ,lord1 his ,god1 as ,david1 his father4 #af3c4 ,but he walked in the way of the kings of ,israel3 moreover1 he consecrated also his son1 making him pass through the fire1 according to the idols of the nations which the ,lord destroyed before the children of ,israel4 #af3d4 ,he sacrificed also1 and burnt incense in the high places1 and on the hills1 and under every green tree4 #af3e4 ,then ,rasin1 king of ,syria1 and ,phacee1 son of ,romelia1 king of ,israel1 came up to ,jerusalem to fight3 and they besieged ,achaz1 but were not able to overcome him4 #af3f4 ,at that time ,rasin1 king of ,syria1 restored ,aila to ,syria1 and drove the men of ,juda out of ,aila3 and the ,edomites came into ,aila1 and dwelt there unto this day4 #af3g4 ,and ,achaz sent messengers to ,theglathphalasar1 king of the ,assyrians1 saying3 ,i am thy servant1 and thy son3 come up1 and save me out of the hand of the king of ,syria1 and out of the hand of the king of ,israel1 who are risen up together against me4 #af3h4 ,and when he had gathered together the silver and gold that could be found in the house of the ,lord1 and in the king's treasures1 he sent it for a present to the king of the ,assyrians4 #af3i4 ,and he agreed to his desire3 for the king of the ,assyrians went up against ,damascus1 and laid it waste3 and he carried away the inhabitants thereof to ,cyrene2 but ,rasin he slew4 #af3aj4 ,and king ,achaz went to ,damascus to meet ,theglathphalasar1 king of the ,assyrians1 and when he had seen the altar of ,damascus1 king ,achaz sent to ,urias1 the priest1 a pattern of it1 and its likeness1 according to all the work thereof4 #af3aa4 ,and ,urias1 the priest1 built an altar according to all that king ,achaz had commanded from ,damascus so did ,urias1 the priest1 until king ,achaz came from ,damascus4 #af3ab4 ,and when the king was come from ,damascus1 he saw the altar and worshipped it3 and went up and offered holocausts1 and his own sacrifice2 #af3ac4 ,and he offered libations1 and poured the blood of the peace offerings1 which he had offered1 upon the altar4 #af3ad4 ,but the altar of brass that was before the ,lord1 he removed from the face of the temple1 and from the place of the altar1 and from the place of the temple of the ,lord3 and he set it at the side of the altar towards the north4 #af3ae4 ,and king ,achaz commanded ,urias1 the priest1 saying3 ,upon the great altar offer the morning holocaust1 and the evening sacrifice1 and the king's holocaust1 and his sacrifice1 and the holocaust of the whole people of the land1 and their sacrifices1 and their libations3 and all the blood of the holocaust1 and all the blood of the victim1 thou shalt pour out upon it3 but the altar of brass shall be ready at my pleasure4 #af3af4 ,so ,urias1 the priest1 did according to all that ,osee4 ,the ,israelites for their sins are carried into captivity3 other inhabitants are sent to ,samaria1 who make a mixture of religion4 #ag3a4 ,in the twelfth year of ,achaz king of ,juda1 ,osee the son of ,ela reigned in ,samaria1 over ,israel1 nine years4 ,in the twelfth year of ,achaz king of ,juda444 ,he began to reign before3 but was not in quiet possession of the kingdom to the twelfth year of ,achaz4 #ag3b4 ,and he did evil before the ,lord3 but not as the kings of ,israel that had been before him4 #ag3c4 ,against him came up ,salmanasar1 king of the ,assyrians2 and ,osee became his servant1 and paid him tribute4 #ag3d4 ,and when the king of the ,assyrians found that ,osee1 endeavouring to rebel1 had sent messengers to ,sua1 the king of ,egypt1 that he might not pay tribute to the king of the ,assyrians1 as he had done every year1 he besieged him1 bound him1 and cast him into prison4 #ag3e4 ,and he went through all the land3 and going up to ,samaria1 he besieged it three years4 #ag3f4 ,and in the ninth year of ,osee1 the king of the ,assyrians took ,samaria1 and carried ,israel away to ,assyria3 and he placed them in ,hala1 and ,habor1 by the river of ,gozan1 in the cities of the ,medes4 #ag3g4 ,for so it was that the children of ,israel had sinned against the ,lord1 their ,god1 who brought them out of the land of ,egypt1 from under the hand of ,pharao1 king of ,egypt2 and they worshipped strange gods4 #ag3h4 ,and they walked according to the way of the nations which the ,lord had destroyed in the sight of the children of ,israel1 and of the kings of ,israel3 because they had done in like manner4 #ag3i4 ,and the children of ,israel offended the ,lord1 their ,god1 with things that were not right3 and built them high places in all their cities1 from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city4 #ag3aj4 ,and they made them statues and groves on every high hill1 and under every shady tree3 #ag3aa4 ,and they burnt incense there upon altars1 after the manner of the nations which the ,lord had removed from their face3 and they did wicked things1 provoking the ,lord4 #ag3ab4 ,and they worshipped abominations1 concerning which the ,lord had commanded them that they should not do this thing4 #ag3ac4 ,and the ,lord testified to them in ,israel1 and in ,juda1 by the hand of all the prophets and seers1 saying3 ,return from your wicked ways1 and keep my precepts1 and ceremonies1 according to all the law which ,i commanded your fathers3 and as ,i have sent to you in the hand of my servants the prophets4 #ag3ad4 ,and they hearkened not1 but hardened their necks like to the neck of their fathers1 who would not obey the ,lord1 their ,god4 #ag3ae4 ,and they rejected his ordinances1 and the covenant that he made with their fathers1 and the testimonies which he testified against them3 and they followed vanities1 and acted vainly3 and they followed the nations that were round about them1 concerning which the ,lord had commanded them that they should not do as they did4 #ag3af4 ,and they forsook all the precepts of the ,lord1 their ,god3 and made to themselves two molten calves1 and groves1 and adored all the host of heaven3 and they served ,baal1 #ag3ag4 ,and consecrated their sons1 and their daughters1 through fire3 and they gave themselves to divinations1 and soothsayings3 and they delivered themselves up to do evil before the ,lord1 to provoke him4 #ag3ah4 ,and the ,lord was very angry with ,israel1 and removed them from his sight1 and there remained only the tribe of ,juda4 #ag3ai4 ,but neither did ,juda itself keep the commandments of the ,lord1 their ,god3 but they walked in the errors of ,israel1 which they had wrought4 #ag3bj4 ,and the ,lord cast off all the seed of ,israel1 and afflicted them1 and delivered them into the hand of spoilers1 till he cast them away from his face3 #ag3ba4 ,even from that time1 when ,israel was rent from the house of ,david1 and made ,jeroboam1 son of ,nabat1 their king3 for ,jeroboam separated ,israel from the ,lord1 and made them commit a great sin4 #ag3bb4 ,and the children of ,israel walked in all the sins of ,jeroboam1 which he had done3 and they departed not from them1 #ag3bc4 ,till the ,lord removed ,israel from his face1 as he had spoken in the hand of all his servants1 the prophets3 and ,israel was carried away out of their land to ,assyria1 unto this day4 #ag3bd4 ,and the king of the ,assyrians brought people from ,babylon1 and from ,cutha1 and from ,avah1 and from ,emath1 and from ,sepharvaim3 and placed them in the cities of ,samaria instead of the children of ,israel3 and they possessed ,samaria1 and dwelt in the cities thereof4 #ag3be4 ,and when they began to dwell there1 they feared not the ,lord3 and the ,lord sent lions among them1 which killed them4 #ag3bf4 ,and it was told the king of the ,assyrians1 and it was said3 ,the nations which thou hast removed1 and made to dwell in the cities of ,samaria1 know not the ordinances of the ,god of the land3 and the ,lord hath sent lions among them3 and behold they kill them1 because they know not the manner of the ,god of the land4 #ag3bg4 ,and the king of the ,assyrians commanded1 saying3 ,carry thither one of the priests whom you brought from thence captive1 and let him go1 and dwell with them3 and let him teach them the ordinances of the ,god of the land4 #ag3bh4 ,so one of the priests1 who had been carried away captive from ,samaria1 came and dwelt in ,bethel1 and taught them how they should worship the ,lord4 #ag3bi4 ,and every nation made gods of their own and put them in the temples of the high places1 which the ,samaritans had made1 every nation in their cities where they dwelt4 #ag3cj4 ,for the men of ,babylon made ,sochothbenoth3 and the ,cuthites made ,nergel3 and the men of ,emath made ,asima4 #ag3ca4 ,and the ,hevites made ,nebahaz1 and ,tharthac4 ,and they that were of ,sepharvaim burnt their children in fire1 to ,adramelech and ,anamelech1 the gods of ,sepharvaim4 #ag3cb4 ,and nevertheless they worshipped the ,lord4 ,and they made to themselves1 of the lowest of the people1 priests of the high places1 and they placed them in the temples of the high places4 #ag3cc4 ,and when they worshipped the ,lord1 they served also their own gods1 according to the custom of the nations out of which they were brought to ,samaria3 #ag3cd4 ,unto this day they follow the old manner3 they fear not the ,lord1 neither do they keep his ceremonies1 and judgments1 and law1 and the commandment1 which the ,lord commanded the children of ,jacob1 whom he surnamed ,israel3 #ag3ce4 ,with whom he made a covenant1 and charged them1 saying3 ,you shall not fear strange gods1 nor shall you adore them1 nor worship them1 nor sacrifice to them4 #ag3cf4 ,but the ,lord1 your ,god1 who brought you out of the land of ,egypt1 with great power1 and a stretched out arm1 him shall you fear1 and him shall you adore1 and to him shall you sacrifice4 #ag3cg4 ,and the ceremonies1 and judgments1 and law1 and the commandment1 which he wrote for you1 you shall observe to do them always3 and you shall not fear strange gods4 #ag3ch4 ,and the covenant that he made with you1 you shall not forget3 neither shall ye worship strange ,gods1 #ag3ci4 ,but fear the ,lord1 your ,god1 and he shall deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies4 #ag3dj4 ,but they did not hearken to them1 but did according to their old custom4 #ag3da4 ,so these nations feared the ,lord1 but nevertheless served also their idols3 their children also1 and grandchildren1 as their fathers did1 so do they unto this day4 #d ,kings ,chapter #ah ,the reign of ,ezechias3 he abolisheth idolatry and prospereth4 ,sennacherib cometh up against him3 ,rabsaces soliciteth the people to revolt2 and blasphemeth the ,lord4 #ah3a4 ,in the third year of ,osee1 the son of ,ela1 king of ,israel1 reigned ,ezechias1 the son of ,achaz1 king of ,juda4 #ah3b4 ,he was five and twenty years old when he began to reign3 and he reigned nine and twenty years in ,jerusalem3 the name of his mother was ,abi1 the daughter of ,zacharias4 #ah3c4 ,and he did that which was good before the ,lord1 according to all that ,david1 his father1 had done3 #ah3d4 ,he destroyed the high places1 and broke the statues in pieces1 and cut down the groves1 and broke the brazen serpent1 which ,moses had made3 for till that time the children of ,israel burnt incense to it3 and he called its name ,nohestan4 ,and he called its name ,noheston444 ,that is1 their brass2 or a little brass4 ,so he called it in contempt1 because they had made an idol of it4 #ah3e4 ,he trusted in the ,lord1 the ,god of ,israel3 so that after him there was none like him among all the kings of ,juda1 nor any of them that were before him3 #ah3f4 ,and he stuck to the ,lord1 and departed not from his steps1 but kept his commandments1 which the ,lord commanded ,moses4 #ah3g4 ,wherefore the ,lord also was with him1 and in all things1 to which he went forth1 he behaved himself wisely4 ,and he rebelled against the king of the ,assyrians1 and served him not4 #ah3h4 ,he smote the ,philistines as far as ,gaza1 and all their borders1 from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city4 #ah3i4 ,in the fourth year of king ,ezechias1 which was the seventh vear of ,osee1 the son of ,ela1 king of ,israel1 ,salmanasar1 king of the ,assyrians1 came up to ,samaria1 and besieged it1 #ah3aj4 ,and took it4 ,for after three years1 in the sixth year of ,ezechias1 that is1 in the ninth year of ,osee1 king of ,israel1 ,samaria was taken3 #ah3aa4 ,and the king of the ,assyrians carried away ,israel into ,assyria1 and placed them in ,hala1 and in ,habor1 by the rivers of ,gozan1 in the cities of the ,medes4 #ah3ab4 ,because they hearkened not to the voice of the ,lord1 their ,god1 but transgressed his covenant3 all that ,moses1 the servant of the ,lord1 commanded1 they would not hear1 nor do4 #ah3ac4 ,in the fourteenth year of king ,ezechias1 ,sennacherib1 king of the ,assyrians1 came up against the fenced cities of ,juda1 and took them4 #ah3ad4 ,then ,ezechias1 king of ,juda1 sent messengers to the king of the ,assyrians1 to ,lachis1 saying3 ,i have offended1 depart from me3 and all that thou shalt put upon me1 ,i will bear4 ,and the king of the ,assyrians put a tax upon ,ezechias1 king of ,juda1 of three hundred talents of silver1 and thirty talents of gold4 #ah3ae4 ,and ,ezechias gave all the silver that was found in the house of the ,lord1 and in the king's treasures4 #ah3af4 ,at that time ,ezechias broke the doors of the temple of the ,lord1 and the plates of gold which he had fastened on them1 and gave them to the king of the ,assyrians4 #ah3ag4 ,and the king of the ,assyrians sent ,tharthan1 and ,rabsaris1 and ,rabsaces1 from ,lachis1 to king ,ezechias1 with a strong army1 to ,jerusalem3 and they went up and came to ,jerusalem1 and they stood by the conduit of the upper pool1 which is in the way of the fuller's field4 #ah3ah4 ,and they called for the king3 and there went out to them ,eliacim1 the son of ,helcias1 who was over the house1 and ,sobna1 the scribe1 and ,joahe1 the son of ,asaph1 the recorder4 #ah3ai4 ,and ,rabsaces said to them3 ,speak to ,ezechias3 ,thus saith the great king1 the king of the ,assyrians3 ,what is this confidence1 wherein thou trustest8 #ah3bj4 ,perhaps thou hast taken counsel1 to prepare thyself for battle4 ,on whom dost thou trust1 that thou darest to rebel8 #ah3ba4 ,dost thou trust in ,egypt a staff of a broken reed1 upon which if a man lean1 it will break and go into his hand1 and pierce it8 so is ,pharao1 king of ,egypt1 to all that trust in him4 #ah3bb4 ,but if you say to me3 ,we trust in the ,lord1 our ,god3 is it not he1 whose high places and altars ,ezechias hath taken away3 and hath commanded ,juda and ,jerusalem3 ,you shall worship before this altar in ,jerusalem8 #ah3bc4 ,now therefore come over to my master1 the king of the ,assyrians1 and ,i will give you two thousand horses1 and see whether you be able to have riders for them4 #ah3bd4 ,and how can you stand against one lord of the least of my master's servants8 ,dost thou trust in ,egypt for chariots and for horsemen8 #ah3be4 ,is it without the will of the ,lord that ,i am come up to this place to destroy it8 ,the ,lord said to me3 ,go up to this land1 and destroy it4 #ah3bf4 ,then ,eliacim1 the son of ,helcias1 and ,sobna1 and ,joahe1 said to ,rabsaces3 ,we pray thee1 speak to us1 thy servants1 in ,syriac3 for we understand that tongue3 and speak not to us in the ,jews' language1 in the hearing of the people that are upon the wall4 #ah3bg4 ,and ,rabsaces answered them1 saying3 ,hath my master sent me to thy master1 and to thee1 to speak these words1 and not rather to the men that sit upon the wall1 that they may eat their own dung1 and drink their urine with you8 #ah3bh4 ,then ,rabsaces stood1 and cried out with a loud voice in the ,jews' language1 and said3 ,hear the word of the great king1 the king of the ,assyrians4 #ah3bi4 ,thus saith the king3 ,let not ,ezechias deceive you3 for he shall not be able to deliver you out of my hand4 #ah3cj4 ,neither let him make you trust in the ,lord1 saying3 ,the ,lord will surely deliver us1 and this city shall not be given into the hand of the king of the ,assyrians4 #ah3ca4 ,do not hearken to ,ezechias4 ,for thus saith the king of the ,assyrians3 ,do with me that which is for your advantage1 and come out to me3 and every man of you shall eat of his own vineyard1 and of his own fig tree3 and you shall drink water of your own cisterns1 #ah3cb4 ,till ,i come1 and take you away1 to a land1 like to your own land1 a fruitful land1 and plentiful in wine1 a land of bread and vineyards1 a land of olives1 and oil1 and honey1 and you shall live1 and not die4 ,hearken not to ,ezechias1 who deceiveth you1 saying3 ,the ,lord will deliver us4 #ah3cc4 ,have any of the gods of the nations delivered their land from the hand of the king of ,assyria8 #ah3cd4 ,where is the god of ,emath1 and of ,arphad8 where is the god of ,sepharvaim1 of ,ana1 and of ,ava8 have they delivered ,samaria out of my hand8 #ah3ce4 ,who are they among all the gods of the nations that have delivered their country out of my hand1 that the ,lord may deliver ,jerusalem out of my hand8 #ah3cf4 ,but the people held their peace1 and answered him not a word3 for they had received commandment from the king that they should not answer him4 #ah3cg4 ,and ,eliacim1 the son of ,helcias1 who was over the house1 and ,sobna1 the scribe1 and ,joahe1 the son of ,asaph1 the recorder1 came to ,ezechias1 with their garments rent1 and told him the words of ,rabsaces4 #d ,kings ,chapter #ai ,ezechias is assured of ,god's ,assyrians1 their king returneth to ,nineve1 and is slain by his two sons4 #ai3a4 ,and when king ,ezechias heard these words1 he rent his garments1 and covered himself with sackcloth1 and went into the house of the ,lord4 #ai3b4 ,and he sent ,eliacim1 who was over the house1 and ,sobna1 the scribe1 and the ancients of the priests1 covered with sackcloths1 to ,isaias1 the prophet1 the son of ,amos4 #ai3c4 ,and they said to him3 ,thus saith ,ezechias3 ,this day is a day of tribulation1 and of rebuke1 and of blasphemy3 the children are come to the birth1 and the woman in travail hath not strength4 #ai3d4 ,it may be the ,lord1 thy ,god1 will hear all the words of ,rabsaces1 whom the king of the ,assyrians1 his master1 hath sent to reproach the living ,god1 and to reprove with words1 which the ,lord1 thy ,god1 hath heard3 and do thou offer prayer for the remnants that are found4 #ai3e4 ,so the servants of king ,ezechias came to ,isaias4 #ai3f4 ,and ,isaias said to them3 ,thus shall you say to your master3 ,thus saith the ,lord3 ,be not afraid for the words which thou hast heard1 with which the servants of the king of the ,assyrians have blasphemed me4 #ai3g4 ,behold ,i will send a spirit upon him1 and he shall hear a message1 and shall return into his own country1 and ,i will make him fall by the sword in his own country4 #ai3h4 ,and ,rabsaces returned1 and found the king of the ,assyrians besieging ,lobna3 for he had heard that he was departed from ,lachis4 #ai3i4 ,and when he heard of ,tharaca1 king of ,ethiopia3 ,behold1 he is come out to fight with thee3 and was going against him1 he sent messengers to ,ezechias1 saying3 #ai3aj4 ,thus shall you say to ,ezechias1 king of ,juda3 ,let not thy ,god deceive thee1 in whom thou trustest3 and do not say3 ,jerusalem shall not be delivered into the hands of the king of the ,assyrians4 #ai3aa4 ,behold1 thou hast heard what the kings of the ,assyrians have done to all countries1 how they have laid them waste3 and canst thou alone be delivered8 #ai3ab4 ,have the gods of the nations delivered any of them1 whom my fathers have destroyed1 to wit1 ,gozan1 and ,haran1 and ,reseph1 and the children of ,eden1 that were in ,thelassar8 #ai3ac4 ,where is the king of ,emath1 and the king of ,arphad1 and the king of the city of ,sepharvaim1 and of ,ana1 and of ,ava8 #ai3ad4 ,and when ,ezechias had received the letter of the hand of the messengers1 and had read it1 he went up to the house of the ,lord1 and spread it before the ,lord1 #ai3ae4 ,and he prayed in his sight1 saying3 ,o ,lord ,god of ,israel1 who sittest upon the cherubims1 thou alone art the ,god of all the kings of the earth3 thou madest heaven and earth3 #ai3af4 ,incline thy ear1 and hear3 open1 ,o ,lord1 thy eyes and see3 and hear all the words of ,sennacherib1 who hath sent to upbraid unto us the living ,god4 #ai3ag4 ,of a truth1 ,o ,lord1 the kings of the ,assyrians have destroyed nations1 and the lands of them all4 #ai3ah4 ,and they have cast their gods into the fire3 for they were not gods1 but the work of men's hands1 of wood and stone1 and they destroyed them4 #ai3ai4 ,now therefore1 ,o ,lord our ,god1 save us from his hand1 that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the ,lord1 the only ,god4 #ai3bj4 ,and ,isaias1 the son of ,amos1 sent to ,ezechias1 saying3 ,thus saith the ,lord1 the ,god of ,israel3 ,i have heard the prayer thou hast made to me concerning ,sennacherib1 king of the ,assyrians4 #ai3ba4 ,this is the word that the ,lord hath spoken of him3 ,the virgin1 the daughter of ,sion1 hath despised thee1 and laughed thee to scorn3 the daughtor of ,jerusalem hath wagged her head behind thy back4 #ai3bb4 ,whom hast thou reproached1 and whom hast thou blasphemed8 against whom hast thou exalted thy voice1 and lifted up thy eyes on high8 against the holy one of ,israel4 #ai3bc4 ,by the hand of thy servants thou hast reproached the ,lord1 and hast said3 ,with the multitude of my chariots ,i have gone up to the height of the mountains1 to the top of ,libanus1 and have cut down its tall cedars1 and its choice fir trees4 ,and ,i have entered into the furthest parts thereof1 and the forest of its ,carmel4 ,carmel444 ,a pleasant fruitful hill in the forest4 ,these expressions are figurative1 signifying under the names of mountains and forests1 the kings and provinces whom the ,assyrians had triumphed over4 #ai3bd4 ,i have cut down1 and ,i have drunk strange waters1 and have dried up with the soles of my feet all the shut up waters4 #ai3be4 ,hast thou not heard what ,i have done from the beginning8 from the days of old ,i have formed it1 and now ,i have brought it to effect3 that fenced cities of fighting men should be turned to heaps of ruins3 ,i have formed it1 etc444 ,all thy exploits1 in which thou takest pride1 are no more than what ,i have decreed2 and are not to be ascribed to thy wisdom or strength1 but to my will and ordinance3 who have given to thee to take and destroy so many fenced cities1 and to carry terror wherever thou comest4-,ibid4 ,heaps of ruin444 ,literally ruin of the hills4 #ai3bf4 ,and the inhabitants of them were weak of hand1 they trembled and were confounded1 they became like the grass of the field1 and the green herb on the tops of houses1 which withered before it came to maturity4 #ai3bg4 ,thy dwelling1 and thy going out1
