,kings2 but by the ,hebrews1 the first and second4 ,they contain the history of the kingdoms of ,israel and ,juda1 from the beginning of the reign of ,solomon1 to the captivity4 ,as to the writer of these books1 it seems most probable they were not written by one man2 nor at one time2 but as there was all along a succession of prophets in ,israel1 who recorded1 by divine inspiration1 the most remarkable things that happened in their days1 these books seem to have been written by these prophets4 ,see #b ,paralip4 alias #b ,chron4 #i4bi2 #ab4ae2 #ac4bb2 #bj4cd2 #bf4bb2 #cb4cb4 #c ,kings ,chapter #a ,king ,david growing old1 ,abisag a ,sunamitess is brought to him4 ,adonias pretending to reign1 ,nathan and ,bethsabee obtain that ,solomon should be declared and anointed king4 #a3a4 ,now king ,david was old1 and advanced in years3 and when he was covered with clothes he was not warm4 #a3b4 ,his servants therefore1 said to him3 ,let us seek for our ,lord the king1 a young virgin1 and let her stand before the king1 and cherish him1 and sleep in his bosom and warm our lord the king4 #a3c4 ,so they sought a beautiful young woman1 in all the coasts of ,israel and they found ,abisag1 a ,sunamitess1 and brought her to the king4 #a3d4 ,and the damsel was exceedingly beautiful1 and she slept with the king1 and served him1 but the king did not know her4 #a3e4 ,and ,adonias1 the son of ,haggith1 exalted himself1 saying3 ,i will be king4 ,and he made himself chariots and horsemen1 and fifty men to run before him4 #a3f4 ,neither did his father rebuke him at any time1 saying3 ,why hast thou done this8 ,and he also was very beautiful1 the next in birth after ,absalom4 #a3g4 ,and he conferred with ,joab1 the son of ,sarvia1 and with ,abiathar1 the priest1 who furthered ,adonias's side4 #a3h4 ,but ,sadoc1 the priest1 and ,banaias1 the son of ,joiada1 and ,nathan1 the prophet1 and ,semei1 and ,rei1 and the strength of ,david's army1 was not with ,adonias4 #a3i4 ,and ,adonias having slain rams and calves1 and all fat cattle1 by the stone of ,zoheleth1 which was near the fountain ,rogel1 invited all his brethren1 the king's sons1 and all the men of ,juda1 the king's servants3 #a3aj4 ,but ,nathan1 the prophet1 and ,banaias1 and all the valiant men1 and ,solomon1 his brother1 he invited not4 #a3aa4 ,and ,nathan said to ,bethsabee1 the mother of ,solomon3 ,hast thou not heard that ,adonias1 the son of ,haggith1 reigneth1 and our lord ,david knoweth it not8 #a3ab4 ,now then1 come1 take my counsel1 and save thy life1 and the life of thy son ,solomon4 #a3ac4 ,go1 and get thee in to king ,david1 and say to him3 ,didst not thou1 my lord1 ,o king1 swear to me1 thy handmaid1 saying3 ,solomon1 thy son1 shall reign after me1 and he shall sit on my throne8 why then doth ,adonias reign8 #a3ad4 ,and while thou art yet speaking there with the king1 ,i will come in after thee1 and will fill up thy words4 #a3ae4 ,so ,bethsabee went in to the king into the chamber4 ,now the king was very old1 and ,abisag1 the ,sunamitess1 ministered to him4 #a3af4 ,bethsabee bowed herself1 and worshipped the king4 ,and the king said to her3 ,what is thy will8 #a3ag4 ,she answered1 and said3 ,my lord1 thou didst swear to thy handmaid1 by the ,lord thy ,god1 saying3 ,solomon1 thy son1 shall reign after me1 and he shall sit on my throne4 #a3ah4 ,and behold1 now ,adonias reigneth1 and thou1 my lord the king1 knowest nothing of it4 #a3ai4 ,he hath killed oxen1 and all fat cattle1 and many rams1 and invited all the king's sons1 and ,abiathar1 the priest1 and ,joab1 the general of the army3 but ,solomon1 thy servant1 he invited not4 #a3bj4 ,and now1 my lord1 ,o king1 the eyes of all ,israel are upon thee1 that thou shouldst tell them1 who shall sit on thy throne1 my lord the king1 after thee4 #a3ba4 ,otherwise it shall come to pass1 when my lord the king sleepeth with his fathers1 that ,i1 and my son1 ,solomon1 shall be accounted offenders4 #a3bb4 ,as she was yet speaking with the king1 ,nathan1 the prophet1 came4 #a3bc4 ,and they told the king1 saying3 ,nathan1 the prophet1 is here4 ,and when he was come in before the king1 and had worshipped1 bowing down to the ground1 #a3bd4 ,nathan said3 ,my lord1 ,o king1 hast thou said3 ,let ,adonias reign after me1 and let him sit upon my throne8 #a3be4 ,because he is gone down to day1 and hath killed oxen1 and fatlings1 and many rams1 and invited all the king's sons1 and the captains of the army1 and ,abiathar the priest3 and they are eating and drinking before him1 and saying3 ,god save king ,adonias3 #a3bf4 ,but me1 thy servant1 and ,sadoc1 the priest1 and ,banaias1 the son of ,joiada1 and ,solomon1 thy servant1 he hath not invited4 #a3bg4 ,is this word come out from my lord the king1 and hast thou not told me1 thy servant1 who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him8 #a3bh4 ,and king ,david answered1 and said3 ,call to me ,bethsabee4 ,and when she was come in to the king1 and stood before him1 #a3bi4 ,the king swore1 and said3 ,as the ,lord liveth1 who hath delivered my soul out of all distress1 #a3cj4 ,even as ,i swore to thee1 by the ,lord1 the ,god of ,israel1 saying3 ,solomon thy son1 shall reign after me1 and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead1 so will ,i do this day4 #a3ca4 ,and ,bethsabee1 bowing with her face to the earth1 worshipped the king1 saying3 ,may my lord ,david live for ever4 #a3cb4 ,king ,david also said3 ,call me ,sadoc1 the priest1 and ,nathan1 the prophet1 and ,banaias1 the son of ,joiada4 ,and when they were come in before the king1 #a3cc4 ,he said to them3 ,take with you the servants of your lord1 and set my son ,solomon upon my mule3 and bring him to ,gihon3 #a3cd4 ,and let ,sadoc1 the priest1 and ,nathan1 the prophet1 anoint him there king over ,israel3 and you shall sound the trumpet1 and shall say3 ,god save king ,solomon4 #a3ce4 ,and you shall come up after him1 and he shall come1 and shall sit upon my throne1 and he shall reign in my stead3 and ,i will appoint him to be ruler over ,israel1 and over ,juda4 #a3cf4 ,and ,banaias1 the son of ,joiada1 answered the king1 saying3 ,amen3 so say the ,lord1 the ,god of my lord the king4 #a3cg4 ,as the ,lord hath been with my lord the king1 so be he with ,solomon1 and make his throne higher than the throne of my lord king ,david4 #a3ch4 ,so ,sadoc1 the priest1 and ,nathan1 the prophet1 went down1 and ,banaias1 the son of ,joiada1 and the ,cerethi1 and ,phelethi3 and they set ,solomon upon the mule of king ,david1 and brought him to ,gihon4 #a3ci4 ,and ,sadoc1 the priest1 took a horn of oil out of the tabernacle1 and anointed ,solomon3 and they sounded the trumpet1 and all the people said3 ,god save king ,solomon4 #a3dj4 ,and all the multitude went up after him1 and the people played with pipes1 and rejoiced with a great joy1 and the earth rang with the noise of their cry4 #a3da4 ,and ,adonias1 and all that were invited by him1 heard it1 and now the feast was at an end4 ,joab also1 hearing the sound of the trumpet1 said3 ,what meaneth this noise of the city in an uproar8 #a3db4 ,while he yet spoke1 ,jonathan1 the son of ,abiathar1 the priest1 came3 and ,adonias said to him3 ,come in1 because thou art a valiant man1 and bringest good news4 #a3dc4 ,and ,jonathan answered ,adonias3 ,not so3 for our lord1 king ,david1 hath appointed ,solomon king2 #a3dd4 ,and hath sent with him ,sadoc1 the priest1 and ,nathan1 the prophet1 and ,banaias1 the son of ,joiada1 and the ,cerethi1 and the ,phelethi1 and they have set him upon the king's mule3 #a3de4 ,and ,sadoc1 the priest1 and ,nathan1 the prophet1 have anointed him king1 in ,gihon3 and they are gone up from thence rejoicing1 so that the city rang again3 this is the noise that you have heard4 #a3df4 ,moreover1 ,solomon sitteth upon the throne of the kingdom4 #a3dg4 ,and the king's servants going in1 have blessed ouur lord king ,david1 saying3 ,may ,god make the name of ,solomon greater than thy name1 and make his throne greater than thy throne4 ,and the king adored in his bed3 #a3dh4 ,and he said3 ,blessed be the ,lord1 the ,god of ,israel1 who hath given this day one to sit on my throne1 my eyes seeing it4 #a3di4 ,then all the guests of ,adonias were afraid1 and they all arose1 and every man went his way4 #a3ej4 ,and ,adonias fearing ,solomon1 arose and went1 and took hold of the horn of the altar4 #a3ea4 ,and they told ,solomon1 saying3 ,behold ,adonias fearing king ,solomon1 hath taken hold of the horn of the altar1 saying3 ,let king ,solomon swear to me this day1 that he will not kill his servant with the sword4 #a3eb4 ,and ,solomon said3 ,if he be a good man1 there shall not so much as one hair of his head fall to the ground3 but if evil be found in him1 he shall die4 #a3ec4 ,then king ,solomon sent1 and brought him out from the altar3 and going in1 he worshipped king ,solomon3 and ,solomon said to him3 ,go to thy house4 #c ,kings ,chapter #b ,david1 after giving his last charge to ,solomon1 dieth4 ,adonias is put to death3 ,abiathar is banished3 ,joab and ,semei are slain4 #a3a4 ,and the days of ,david drew nigh that he should die1 and he charged his son ,solomon1 saying3 #b3b4 ,i am going the way of all flesh3 take thou courage and shew thyself a man4 #b3c4 ,and keep the charge of the ,lord thy ,god1 to walk in his ways1 and observe his ceremonies1 and his precepts1 and judgments1 and testimonies1 as it is written in the law of ,moses3 that thou mayst understand all thou dost1 and whithersoever thou shalt turn thyself3 #b3d4 ,that the ,lord may confirm his words1 which he hath spoken of me1 saying3 ,if thy children shall take heed to their ways1 and shall walk before me in truth1 with all their heart1 and with all their soul1 there shall not be taken away from thee a man on the throne of ,israel4 #b3e4 ,thou knowest also what ,joab1 the son of ,sarvia1 hath done to me1 what he did to the two captains of the army of ,israel1 to ,abner1 the son of ,ner1 and to ,amasa1 the son of ,jether3 whom he slew1 and shed the blood of war in peace1 and put the blood of war on his girdle that was about his loins1 and in his shoes that were on his feet4 ,joab444 ,these instructions given by ,david to his son1 with relation to ,joab and ,semei1 proceeded not from any rancour of heart1 or private pique2 but from a zeal for justice1 that crimes so public and heinous might not pass unpunished4 #b3f4 ,do1 therefore1 according to thy wisdom1 and let not his hoary head go down to hell in peace4 ,to hell444 ,this word hell doth not here signify the place or state of damnation2 but the place and state of the dead4 #b3g4 ,but shew kindness to the sons of ,berzellai1 the ,galaadite1 and let them eat at thy table3 for they met me when ,i fled from the face of ,absalom1 thy brother4 #b3h4 ,thou hast also with thee ,semei1 the son of ,gera1 the son of ,jemini1 of ,bahurim1 who cursed me with a grievous curse1 when ,i went to the camp3 but because he came down to meet me when ,i passed over the ,jordan1 and ,i swore to him by the ,lord1 saying3 ,i will not kill thee with the sword3 #b3i4 ,do not thou hold him guiltless4 ,but thou art a wise man1 and knowest what to do with him1 and thou shalt bring down his grey hairs with blood to the grave4 #b3aj4 ,so ,david slept with his fathers1 and was buried in the city of ,david4 #b3aa4 ,and the days that ,david reigned in ,israel1 were forty years3 in ,hebron he reigned seven years1 in ,jerusalem thirty-three4 #b3ab4 ,and ,solomon sat upon the throne of his father ,david1 and his kingdom was strengthened exceedingly4 #b3ac4 ,and ,adonias1 the son of ,haggith1 came to ,bethsabee the mother of ,solomon4 ,and she said to him3 ,is thy coming peaceable8 ,he answered3 ,it is peaceable4 #b3ad4 ,and he added3 ,i have a word to speak with thee4 ,she said to him3 ,speak4 ,and he said3 #b3ae4 ,thou knowest that the kingdom was mine1 and all ,israel had preferred me to be their king3 but the kingdom is transferred1 and is become my brother's3 for it was appointed him by the ,lord4 #b3af4 ,now therefore1 ,i ask one petition of thee2 turn not away my face4 ,and she said to him3 ,say on4 #b3ag4 ,and he said ,i pray thee speak to king ,solomon 7for he cannot deny thee any thing7 to give me ,abisag1 the ,sunamitess1 to wife4 #b3ah4 ,and ,bethsabee said3 ,well1 ,i will speak for thee to the king4 #b3ai4 ,then ,bethsabee came to king ,solomon1 to speak to him for ,adonias3 and the king arose to meet her1 and bowed to her1 and sat down upon his throne3 and a throne was set for the king's mother1 and she sat on his right hand4 #b3bj4 ,and she said to him3 ,i desire one small petition of thee2 do not put me to confusion4 ,and the king said to her3 ,my mother ask1 for ,i must not turn away thy face4 #b3ba4 ,and she said3 ,let ,abisag1 the ,sunamitess1 be given to ,adonias1 thy brother1 to wife4 #b3bb4 ,and king ,solomon answered1 and said to his mother3 ,why dost thou ask ,abisag1 the ,sunamitess1 for ,adonias8 ask for him also the kingdom2 for he is my elder brother1 and hath ,abiathar1 the priest1 and ,joab1 the son of ,sarvia4 #b3bc4 ,then king ,solomon swore by the ,lord1 saying3 ,so and so may ,god do to me1 and add more1 if ,adonias hath not spoken this word against his own life4 #b3bd4 ,and now1 as the ,lord liveth1 who hath established me1 and placed me upon the throne of ,david1 my father1 and who hath made me a house1 as he promised1 ,adonias shall be put to death this day4 #b3be4 ,and king ,solomon sent by the hand of ,banaias1 the son of ,joiada1 who slew him1 and he died4 #b3bf4 ,and the king said also to ,abiathar1 the priest3 ,go to ,anathoth1 to thy lands1 for indeed thou art worthy of death3 but ,i will not at this time put thee to death1 because thou didst carry the ark of the ,lord ,god before ,david1 my father1 and hast endured trouble in all the troubles my father endured4 #b3bg4 ,so ,solomon cast out ,abiathar from being the priest of the ,lord1 that the word of the ,lord might be fulfilled1 which he spoke concerning the house of ,heli in ,silo4 #b3bh4 ,and the news came to ,joab1 because ,joab had turned after ,adonias1 and had not turned after ,solomon3 and ,joab fled into the tabernacle of the ,lord1 and took hold on the horn of the altar4 #b3bi4 ,and it was told king ,solomon1 that ,joab was fled into the tabernacle of the ,lord1 and was by the altar3 and ,solomon sent ,banaias1 the son of ,joiada1 saying4 ,go1 kill him4 #b3cj4 ,and ,banaias came to the tabernacle of the ,lord1 and said to him3 ,thus saith the king3 ,come forth4 ,and he said3 ,i will not come forth1 but here ,i will die4 ,banaias brought word back to the king1 saying3 ,thus saith ,joab1 and thus he answered me4 #b3ca4 ,and the king said to him3 ,do as he hath said2 and kill him1 and bury him1 and thou shalt remove the innocent blood which hath been shed by ,joab1 from me1 and from the house of my father3 #b3cb4 ,and the ,lord shall return his blood upon his own head2 because he murdered two men1 just and better than himself3 and slew them with the sword1 my father1 ,david1 not knowing it2 ,abner1 the son of ,ner1 general of the army of ,israel1 and ,amasa1 the son of ,jether general of the army of ,juda2 #b3cc4 ,and their blood shall return upon the head of ,joab1 and upon the head of his seed for ever4 ,but to ,david and his seed1 and his house1 and to his throne1 be peace for ever from the ,lord4 #b3cd4 ,so ,banaias1 the son of ,joiada1 went up1 and setting upon him slew him1 and he was buried in his house in the desert4 #b3ce4 ,and the king appointed ,banaias1 the son of ,joiada in his room over the army2 and ,sadoc1 the priest1 he put in the place of ,abiathar4 #b3cf4 ,the king also sent1 and called for ,semei1 and said to him3 ,build thee a house in ,jerusalem1 and dwell there3 and go not out from thence any where4 #b3cg4 ,for on what day soever thou shalt go out1 and shalt pass over the brook ,cedron1 know that thou shalt be put to death3 thy blood shall be upon thy own head4 #b3ch4 ,and ,semei said to the king3 ,the saying is good3 as my lord the king hath said1 so will thy servant do4 ,and ,semei dwelt in ,jerusalem many days4 #b3ci4 ,and it came to pass after three years1 that the servants of ,semei ran away to ,achis1 the son of ,maacha1 the king of ,geth3 and it was told ,semei that his servants were gone to ,geth4 #b3dj4 ,and ,semei arose1 and saddled his ass1 and went to ,achis1 to ,geth1 to seek his servants1 and he brought them out of ,geth4 #b3da4 ,and it was told ,solomon1 that ,semei had gone from ,jerusalem to ,geth1 and was come back4 #b3db4 ,and sending he called for him1 and said to him3 ,did ,i not protest to thee by the ,lord1 and tell thee before3 ,on what day soever thou shalt go out and walk abroad any where1 know that thou shalt die8 ,and thou answeredst me3 ,the word that ,i have heard is good4 #b3dc4 ,why then hast thou not kept the oath of the ,lord1 and the commandment that ,i laid upon thee8 #b3dd4 ,and the king said to ,semei3 ,thou knowest all the evil1 of which thy heart is conscious1 which thou didst to ,david1 my father3 the ,lord hath returned thy wickedness upon thy own head4 #b3de4 ,and king ,solomon shall be blessed1 and the throne of ,david shall be established before the ,lord for ever4 #b3df4 ,so the king commanded ,banaias1 the son of ,joiada3 and he went out and struck him2 and he died4 #c ,kings ,chapter #c ,solomon marrieth ,pharao's daughter4 ,he sacrificeth in ,gabaon3 in the choice which ,god gave him he preferreth wisdom4 ,his wise judgment between the two harlots4 #c3a4 ,and the kingdom was established in the hand of ,solomon1 and he made affinity with ,pharao1 the king of ,egypt3 for he took his daughter1 and brought her into the city of ,david3 until he had made an end of building his own house1 and the house of the ,lord1 and the wall of ,jerusalem round about4 #c3b4 ,but yet the people sacrificed in the high places3 for there was no temple built to the name of the ,lord until that day4 ,high places444 ,that is1 altars where they worshipped the ,lord1 but not according to the ordinance of the law2 which allowed of no other places for sacrifice but the temple of ,god4 ,among these high places that of ,gabaon was the chiefest1 because there was the tabernacle of the testimony1 which had been removed from ,silo to ,nobe and from ,nobe to ,gabaon4 #c3c4 ,and ,solomon loved the ,lord1 walking in the precepts of ,david1 his father2 only he sacrificed in the high places1 and burnt incense4 #c3d4 ,he went therefore to ,gabaon1 to sacrifice there3 for that was the great high place3 a thousand victims for holocausts1 did ,solomon offer upon that altar1 in ,gabaon4 #c3e4 ,and the ,lord appeared to ,solomon in a dream by night1 saying3 ,ask what thou wilt that ,i should give thee4 #c3f4 ,and ,solomon said3 ,thou hast shewed great mercy to thy servant ,david1 my father1 even as he walked before thee in truth1 and justice1 and an upright heart with thee3 and thou hast kept thy great mercy for him1 and hast given him a son to sit on his throne1 as it is this day4 #c3g4 ,and now1 ,o ,lord ,god1 thou hast made thy servant king instead of ,david1 my father3 and ,i am but a child1 and know not how to go out and come in2 #c3h4 ,and thy servant is in the midst of the people which thou hast chosen1 an immense people1 which cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude4 #c3i4 ,give therefore to thy servant an understanding heart1 to judge thy people1 and discern between good and evil4 ,for who shall be able to judge this people1 thy people1 which is so numerous8 #c3aj4 ,and the word was pleasing to the ,lord1 that ,solomon had asked such a thing4 #c3aa4 ,and the ,lord said to ,solomon3 ,because thou hast asked this thing1 and hast not asked for thyself long life nor riches1 nor the lives of thy enemies1 but hast asked for thyself wisdom to discern jndgment2 #c3ab4 ,behold ,i have done for thee according to thy words1 and have given thee a wise and understanding heart1 in so much that there hath been no one like thee before thee1 nor shall arise after thee4 #c3ac4 ,yea1 and the things also which thou didst not ask1 ,i have given thee2 to wit1 riches and glory3 so that no one hath been like thee among the kings in all days heretofore4 #c3ad4 ,and if thou wilt walk in my ways1 and keep my precepts and my commandments1 as thy father walked1 ,i will lengthen thy days4 #c3ae4 ,and ,solomon awaked1 and perceived that it was a dream3 and when he was come to ,jerusalem1 he stood before the ark of the covenant of the ,lord1 and offered holocausts1 and sacrificed victims of peace offerings1 and made a great feast for all his servants4 #c3af4 ,then there came two women that were harlots1 to the king1 and stood before him4 #c3ag4 ,and one of them said3 ,i beseech thee1 my lord1 ,i and this woman dwelt in one house1 and ,i was delivered of a child with her in the chamber4 #c3ah4 ,and the third day after ,i was delivered1 she also was delivered2 and we were together1 and no other person with us in the house2 only we two4 #c3ai4 ,and this woman's child died in the night3 for in her sleep she overlaid him4 #c3bj4 ,and rising in the dead time of the night1 she took my child from my side1 while ,i1 thy handmaid1 was asleep1 and laid it in her bosom3 and laid her dead child in my bosom4 #c3ba4 ,and when ,i arose in the morning1 to give my child suck1 behold it was dead3 but considering him more diligently1 when it was clear day1 ,i found that it was not mine which ,i bore4 #c3bb4 ,and the other woman answered3 ,it is not so as thou sayst1 but thy child is dead1 and mine is alive4 ,on the contrary1 she said2 ,thou liest3 for my child liveth1 and thy child is dead4 ,and in this manner they strove before the king4 #c3bc4 ,then said the king3 ,the one saith1 ,my child is alive1 and thy child is dead4 ,and the other answereth3 ,nay2 but thy child is dead1 and mine liveth4 #c3bd4 ,the king therefore said3 ,bring me a sword4 ,and when they had brought a sword before the king1 #c3be4 ,divide1 said he1 the living child in two1 and give half to the one and half to the other4 #c3bf4 ,but the woman1 whose child was alive1 said to the king2 7for her bowels were moved upon her child7 ,i beseech thee1 my lord1 give her the child alive1 and do not kill it4 ,but the other said3 ,let it be neither mine nor thine2 but divide it4 #c3bg4 ,the king answered1 and said3 ,give the living child to this woman1 and let it not be killed2 for she is the mother thereof4 #c3bh4 ,and all ,israel heard the judgment which the king had judged1 and they feared the king1 seeing that the wisdom of ,god was in him to do judgment4 #c ,kings ,chapter #d ,solomon's chief officers4 ,his riches and wisdom4 #d3a4 ,and king ,solomon reigned over all ,israel3 #d3b4 ,and these were the princes which he had3 ,azarias1 the son of ,sadoc1 the priest3 #d3c4 ,elihoreph1 and ,ahia1 the sons of ,sisa1 scribes3 ,josaphat1 the son of ,ahilud1 recorder3 #d3d4 ,banaias1 the son of ,joiada1 over the army3 and ,sadoc1 and ,abiathar1 priests4 ,abiathar444 ,by this it appears that ,abiathar was not altogether deposed from the high priesthood2 but only banished to his country house1 and by that means excluded from the exercise of his functions4 #d3e4 ,azarias1 the son of ,nathan1 over them that were about the king3 ,zabud1 the son of ,nathan1 the priest1 the king's friend3 #d3f4 ,and ,ahisar1 governor of the house3 and ,adoniram1 the son of ,abda1 over the tribute4 #d3g4 ,and ,solomon had twelve governors over all ,israel1 who provided victuals for the king and for his house hold3 for every one provided necessaries1 each man his month in the year4 #d3h4 ,and these are their names3 ,benhur1 in mount ,ephraim4 #d3i4 ,bendecar1 in ,macces1 and in ,salebim1 and in ,bethsames1 and in ,elon1 and in ,bethanan4 #d3aj4 ,benhesed1 in ,aruboth3 his was ,socho1 and all the land of ,epher4 #d3aa4 ,benabinadab1 to whom belonged all ,nephath-,dor3 he had ,tapheth1 the daughter of ,solomon1 to wife4 #d3ab4 ,bana1 the son of ,ahilud1 who governed ,thanac1 and ,mageddo1 and all ,bethsan1 which is by ,sarthana1 beneath ,jezrael1 from ,bethsan unto ,abelmehula1 over against ,jecmaan4 #d3ac4 ,bengaber1 in ,ramoth ,galaad3 he had the town of ,jair1 the son of ,manasses1 in ,galaad3 he was chief in all the country of ,argob1 which is in ,basan1 threescore great cities with walls1 and brazen bolts4 #d3ad4 ,ahinadab1 the son of ,addo1 was chief in ,manaim4 #d3ae4 ,achimaas1 in ,nephthali3 he also had ,basemath1 the daughter of ,solomon1 to wife4 #d3af4 ,baana1 the son of ,husi1 in ,aser1 and in ,baloth4 #d3ag4 ,josaphat1 the son of ,pharue1 in ,issachar4 #d3ah4 ,semei1 the son of ,ela1 in ,benjamin4 #d3ai4 ,gaber1 the son of ,uri1 in the land of ,galaad1 in the land of ,sehon1 the king of the ,amorrhites1 and of ,og1 the king of ,basan1 over all that were in that land4 #d3bj4 ,juda and ,israel were innumerable1 as the sand of the sea in multitude2 eating and drinking1 and rejoicing4 #d3ba4 ,and ,solomon had under him all the kingdoms1 from the river to the land of the ,philistines1 even to the border of ,egypt3 and they brought him presents1 and served him all the days of his life4 ,the river444 ,euphrates4 #d3bb4 ,and the provision of ,solomon1 for each day1 was thirty measures of fine flour1 and threescore measures of meal2 #d3bc4 ,ten fat oxen1 and twenty out of the pastures1 and a hundred rams2 besides venison of harts1 roes1 and buffles1 and fatted fowls4 #d3bd4 ,for he had all the country which was beyond the river1 from ,thaphsa to ,gazan1 and all the kings of those countries3 and he had peace on every side round about4 #d3be4 ,and ,juda1 and ,israel1 dwelt without any fear1 every one under his vine1 and under his fig tree1 from ,dan to ,bersabee1 all the days of ,solomon4 #d3bf4 ,and ,solomon had forty thousand stalls of chariot horses1 and twelve thousand for the saddle4 #d3bg4 ,and the foresaid governors of the king fed them2 and they furnished the necessaries also for king ,solomon's table1 with great care1 in their time4 #d3bh4 ,they brought barley also1 and straw for the horses and beasts1 to the place where the king was1 according as it was appointed them4 #d3bi4 ,and ,god gave to ,solomon wisdom1 and understanding exceeding much1 and largeness of heart1 as the sand that is on the sea shore4 #d3cj4 ,and the wisdom of ,solomon surpassed the wisdom of all the ,orientals1 and of the ,egyptians2 #d3ca4 ,and he was wiser than all men3 wiser than ,ethan1 the ,ezrahite1 and ,heman1 and ,chalcol1 and ,dorda1 the sons of ,mahol1 and he was renowned in all nations round about4 #d3cb4 ,solomon also spoke three thousand parables3 and his poems were a thousand and five4 ,three thousand parables1 etc444 ,these works are all lost1 excepting some part of the parables extant in the book of ,proverbs2 and his chief poem called the ,canticle of ,canticles4 #d3cc4 ,and he treated about trees1 from the cedar that is in ,libanus1 unto the hyssop that cometh out of the wall3 and he discoursed of beasts1 and of fowls1 and of creeping things1 and of fishes4 #d3cd4 ,and they came from all nations to hear the wisdom of ,solomon1 and from all the kings of the earth1 who heard of his wisdom4 #c ,kings ,chapter #e ,hiram king of ,tyre agreeth to furnish timber and workmen for building the temple3 the number of workmen and overseers4 #e3a4 ,and ,hiram1 king of ,tyre1 sent his servants to ,solomon3 for he heard that they had anointed him king in the room of his father3 for ,hiram had always been ,david's friend4 #e3b4 ,solomon sent to ,hiram1 saying3 #e3c4 ,thou knowest the will of ,david1 my father1 and that he could not build a house to the name of the ,lord his ,god1 because of the wars that were round about him1 until the ,lord put them under the soles of his feet4 #e3d4 ,but now the ,lord my ,god hath given me rest round about2 and there is no adversary nor evil occurrence4 #e3e4 ,wherefore ,i purpose to build a temple to the name of the ,lord my ,god1 as the ,lord spoke to ,david my father1 saying3 ,thy son1 whom ,i will set upon the throne1 in thy place1 he shall build a house to my name4 #e3f4 ,give orders1 therefore1 that thy servants cut me down cedar trees1 out of ,libanus1 and let my servants be with thy servants3 and ,i will give thee the hire of thy servants whatsoever thou wilt ask3 for thou knowest how there is not among my people a man that has skill to hew wood like to the ,sidonians4 #e3g4 ,now when ,hiram had heard the words of ,solomon1 he rejoiced exceedingly1 and said3 ,blessed be the ,lord ,god this day1 who hath given to ,david a very wise son over this numerous people4 #e3h4 ,and ,hiram sent to ,solomon1 saying3 ,i have heard all thou hast desired of me2 and ,i will do all thy desire concerning cedar trees1 and fir trees4 #e3i4 ,my servants shall bring them down from ,libanus to the sea3 and ,i will put them together in floats1 on the sea1 and convey them to the place1 which thou shalt signify to me1 and will land them there1 and thou shalt receive them3 and thou shalt allow me necessaries to furnish food for my household4 #e3aj4 ,so ,hiram gave ,solomon cedar trees1 and fir trees1 according to all his desire4 #e3aa4 ,and ,solomon allowed ,hiram twenty thousand measures of wheat1 for provision for his house1 and twenty measures of the purest oil3 thus gave ,solomon to ,hiram every year4 #e3ab4 ,and the ,lord gave wisdom to ,solomon1 as he promised him3 and there was peace between ,hiram and ,solomon1 and they two made a league together4 #e3ac4 ,and king ,solomon chose workmen out of all ,israel1 and the levy was of thirty thousand men4 #e3ad4 ,and he sent them to ,libanus1 ten thousand every month1 by turns1 so that two months they were at home3 and ,adoniram was over this levy4 #e3ae4 ,and ,solomon had seventy thousand to carry burdens1 and eighty thousand to hew stones in the mountain3 #e3af4 ,besides the overseers who were over every work1 in number three thousand and three hundred1 that ruled over the people1 and them that did the work4 #e3ag4 ,and the king commanded that they should bring great stones1 costly stones1 for the foundation of the temple1 and should square them3 #e3ah4 ,and the masons of ,solomon1 and the masons of ,hiram1 hewed them3 and the ,giblians prepared timber and stones to build the house4 #c ,kings ,chapter #f ,the building of ,solomon's temple4 #f3a4 ,and it came to pass in the four hundred and eightieth year after the children of ,israel came out of the land of ,egypt1 in the fourth year of the reign of ,solomon over ,israel1 in the month ,zio1 7the same is the second month7 he began to build a house to the ,lord4 #f3b4 ,and the house1 which king ,solomon built to the ,lord1 was threescore cubits in length1 and twenty cubits in breadth1 and thirty cubits in height4 #f3c4 ,and there was a porch before the temple1 of twenty cubits in length1 according to the measure of the breadth of the temple3 and it was ten cubits in breadth1 before the face of the temple4 #f3d4 ,and he made in the temple oblique windows4 #f3e4 ,and upon the wall of the temple1 he built floors round about1 in the walls of the house1 round about the temple and the oracle1 and he made chambers in the sides round about4 ,upon the wall1 i4 e41 joining to the wall4-,ibid4 ,he built floors round about444 ,chambers or cells adjoining to the temple1 for the use of the temple and of the priests1 so contrived as to be between the inward and outward wall of the temple1 in three stories1 one above another4-,ibid4 ,the oracle444 ,the inner temple or holy of holies1 where ,god gave his oracles4 #f3f4 ,the floor that was underneath was five cubits in breadth1 and the middle floor was six cubits in breadth1 and the third floor was seven cubits in breadth4 ,and he put beams in the house round about on the outside1 that they might not be fastened in the walls of the temple4 #f3g4 ,and the house1 when it was in building1 was built of stones1 hewed and made ready3 so that there was neither hammer nor axe1 nor any tool of iron heard in the house when it was in building4 ,made ready1 etc444 ,so the stones for the building of ,god's eternal temple in the heavenly ,jerusalem1 7who are the faithful17 must first be hewn and polished here by many trials and sufferings1 before they can be admitted to have a place in that celestial structure4 #f3h4 ,the door1 for the middle side1 was on the right hand of the house3 and by winding stairs they went up to the middle room1 and from the middle to the third4 #f3i4 ,so he built the house1 and finished it3 and he covered the house with roofs of cedar4 #f3aj4 ,and he built a floor over all the house1 five cubits in height1 and he covered the house with timber of cedar4 #f3aa4 ,and the word of the ,lord came to ,solomon1 #f3ab4 ,as for this house1 which thou art building1 if thou wilt walk in my statutes1 and execute my judgments1 and keep all my commandments1 walking in them1 ,i will fulfil my word to thee1 which ,i spoke to ,david thy father4 #f3ac4 ,and ,i will dwell in the midst of the children of ,israel1 and ,i will not forsake my people ,israel4 #f3ad4 ,so ,solomon built the house1 and finished it4 #f3ae4 ,and he built the walls of the house on the inside1 with boards of cedar1 from the floor of the house to the top of the walls1 and to the roofs1 he covered it with boards of cedar on the inside3 and he covered the floor of the house with planks of fir4 #f3af4 ,and he built up twenty cubits with boards of cedar at the hinder part of the temple1 from the floor to the top3 and made the inner house of the oracle to be the holy of holies4 #f3ag4 ,and the temple itself1 before the doors of the oracle1 was forty cubits long4 #f3ah4 ,and all the house was covered within with cedar1 having the turnings1 and the joints thereof artfully wrought1 and carvings projecting out3 all was covered with boards of cedar3 and no stone could be seen in the wall at all4 #f3ai4 ,and he made the oracle in the midst of the house1 in the inner part1 to set there the ark of the covenant of the ,lord4 #f3bj4 ,now the oracle was twenty cubits in length1 and twenty cubits in breadth1 and twenty cubits in height4 ,and he covered it1 and overlaid it with most pure gold4 ,and the altar also he covered with cedar4 #f3ba4 ,and the house before the oracle he overlaid with most pure gold1 and fastened on the plates with nails of gold4 #f3bb4 ,and there was nothing in the temple that was not covered with gold3 the whole altar of the oracle he covered also with gold4 #f3bc4 ,and he made in the oracle two cherubims of olive tree1 of ten cubits in height4 #f3bd4 ,one wing of the cherub was five cubits1 and the other wing of the cherub was five cubits3 that is1 in all ten cubits1 from the extremity of one wing to the extremity of the other wing4 #f3be4 ,the second cherub also was ten cubits3 and the measure1 and the work was the same in both the cherubims3 #f3bf4 ,that is to say1 one cherub was ten cubits high1 and in like manner the other cherub4 #f3bg4 ,and he set the cherubims in the midst of the inner temple3 and the cherubims stretched forth their wings1 and the wing of the one touched one wall1 and the wing of the other cherub touched the other wall3 and the other wings in the midst of the temple touched one another4 #f3bh4 ,and he overlaid the cherubims with gold4 #f3bi4 ,and all the walls of the temple round about he carved with divers figures and carvings3 and he made in them cherubims and palm trees1 and divers representations1 as it were standing out1 and coming forth from the wall4 #f3cj4 ,and the floor of the house he also overlaid with gold within and without4 #f3ca4 ,and in the entrance of the oracle1 he made little doors of olive tree1 and posts of five corners1 #f3cb4 ,and two doors of olive tree3 and he carved upon them figures of cherubims1 and figures of palm trees1 and carvings very much projecting2 and he overlaid them with gold3 and he covered both the cherubims and the palm trees1 and the other things1 with gold4 #f3cc4 ,and he made in the entrance of the temple posts of olive tree foursquare3 #f3cd4 ,and two doors of fir tree1 one of each side3 and each door was double1 and so opened with folding leaves4 #f3ce4 ,and he carved cherubims1 and palm trees1 and carved work standing very much out3 and he overlaid all with golden plates in square work by rule4 #f3cf4 ,and he built the inner court with three rows of polished stones1 and one row of beams of cedar4 #f3cg4 ,in the fourth year was the house of the ,lord founded1 in the month ,zio3 #f3ch4 ,and in the eleventh year1 in the month ,bul4 7which is the eighth month7 the house was finished in all the works thereof1 and in all the appurtenances thereof3 and he was seven years in building it4 #c ,kings ,chapter #g ,solomons palace1 his house in the forest1 and the queen's house3 the work of the two pillars3 the sea 7or laver7 and other vessels4 #g3a4 ,and ,solomon built his own house in thirteen years1 and brought it to perfection4 #g3b4 ,he built also the house of the forest of ,libanus2 the length of it was a hundred cubits1 and the breadth fifty cubits1 and the height thirty cubits3 and four galleries between pillars of cedar3 for he had cut cedar trees into pillars4 #g3c4 ,and he covered the whole vault with boards of cedar1 and it was held up with five and forty pillars4 ,and one row had fifteen pillars1 #g3d4 ,set one against another1 #g3e4 ,and looking one upon another1 with equal space between the pillars1 and over the pillars were square beams in all things equal4 #g3f4 ,and he made a porch of pillars of fifty cubits in length1 and thirty cubits in breadth3 and another porch before the greater porch1 and pillars1 and chapiters upon the pillars4 #g3g4 ,he made also the porch of the throne wherein is the seat of judgment2 and covered it with cedar wood from the floor to the top4 #g3h4 ,and in the midst of the porch1 was a small house1 where he sat in judgment of the like work4 ,he made also a house for the daughter of ,pharao 7whom ,solomon had taken to wife7 of the same work1 as this porch2 #g3i4 ,all of costly stones1 which were sawed by a certain rule and measure1 both within and without3 from the foundation to the top of the walls1 and without1 unto the great court4 #g3aj4 ,and the foundations were of costly stones1 great stones of ten cubits or eight cubits4 #g3aa4 ,and above there were costly stones of equal measure hewed1 and in like manner planks of cedar4 #g3ab4 ,and the great court was made round with three rows of hewed stones1 and one row of planks of cedar1 which also was observed in the inner court of the house of the ,lord1 and in the porch of the house4 #g3ac4 ,and king ,solomon sent1 and brought ,hiram from ,tyre1 #g3ad4 ,the son of a widow woman1 of the tribe of ,nephthali1 whose father was a ,tyrian1 an artificer in brass1 and full of wisdom1 and understanding1 and skill to work all work in brass4 ,and when he was come to king ,solomon1 he wrought all his work4 #g3ae4 ,and he cast two pillars in brass1 each pillar was eighteen cubits high3 and a line of twelve cubits compassed both the pillars4 #g3af4 ,he made also two chapiters of molten brass1 to be set upon the tops of the pillars3 the height of one chapiter was five cubits1 and the height of the other chapiter was five cubits3 #g3ag4 ,and a kind of network1 and chain work wreathed together with wonderful art4 ,both the chapiters of the pillars were cast3 seven rows of nets were on one chapiter1 and seven nets on the other chapiter4 #g3ah4 ,and he made the pillars1 and two rows round about each network to cover the chapiters1 that were upon the top1 with pomegranates3 and in like manner did he to the other chapiter4 #g3ai4 ,and the chapiters that were upon the top of the pillars1 were of lily work1 in the porch of four cubits4 #g3bj4 ,and again there were other chapiters on the top of the pillars above1 according to the measure of the pillar over against the network3 and of pomegranates there were two hundred1 in rows round about the other chapiter4 #g3ba4 ,and he set up the two pillars in the porch of the temple3 and when he had set up the pillar on the right hand1 he called the name thereof ,jachin3 in like manner he set up the second pillar1 and called the name thereof ,booz4 ,jachin444 ,that is1 firmly established4-,ibid4 ,booz444 ,that is1 in its strength4 ,by recording these names in holy writ1 the spirit of ,god would have us understand the invincible firmness and strength of the pillars on which the true temple of ,god1 which is the church1 is established4 #g3bb4 ,and upon the tops of the pillars he made lily work3 so the work of the pillars was finished4 #g3bc4 ,he made also a molten sea1 of ten cubits1 from brim to brim1 round all about2 the height of it was five cubits1 and a line of thirty cubits compassed it round about4 #g3bd4 ,and a graven work1 under the brim of it1 compassed it for ten cubits going about the sea3 there were two rows cast of chamfered sculptures4 #g3be4 ,and it stood upon twelve oxen1 of which three looked towards the north1 and three towards the west1 and three towards the south1 and three towards the east3 and the sea was above upon them1 and their hinder parts were all hid within4 #g3bf4 ,and the laver was a hand breadth thick3 and the brim thereof was like the brim of a cup1 or the leaf of a crisped lily3 it contained two thousand bates4 ,two thousand bates444 ,that is1 about ten thousand gallons4 ,this was the quantity of water which was usually put into it3 but it was capable1 if brimful1 of holding three thousand4 ,see #b ,par4 #d4e4 #g3bg4 ,and he made ten bases of brass1 every base was four cubits in length1 and four cubits in breadth1 and three cubits high4 #g3bh4 ,and the work itself of the bases1 was intergraven3 and there were gravings between the joinings4 #g3bi4 ,and between the little crowns and the ledges1 were lions1 and oxen1 and cherubims2 and in the joinings likewise above3 and under the lions and oxen1 as it were bands of brass hanging down4 #g3cj4 ,and every base had four wheels1 and axletrees of brass3 and at the four sides were undersetters1 under the laver molten1 looking one against another4 #g3ca4 ,the mouth also of the laver within1 was in the top of the chapiter3 and that which appeared without1 was of one cubit all round1 and together it was one cubit and a half3 and in the corners of the pillars were divers engravings3 and the spaces between the pillars were square1 not round4 #g3cb4 ,and the four wheels1 which were at the four corners of the base1 were joined one to another under the base3 the height of a wheel was a cubit and a half4 #g3cc4 ,and they were such wheels as are used to be made in a chariot3 and their axletrees1 and spokes1 and strakes1 and naves1 were all cast4 #g3cd4 ,and the four undersetters1 that were at every corner of each base1 were of the base itself1 cast and joined together4 #g3ce4 ,and on the top of the base1 there was a round compass of half a cubit1 so wrought that the laver might be set thereon1 having its gravings1 and divers sculptures of itself4 #g3cf4 ,he engraved also in those plates1 which were of brass1 and in the corners1 cherubims1 and lions1 and palm trees1 in likeness of a man standing1 so that they seemed not to be engraven1 but added round about4 #g3cg4 ,after this manner1 he made ten bases1 of one casting and measure1 and the like graving4 #g3ch4 ,he made also ten lavers of brass3 one laver contained four bates1 and was of four cubits3 and upon every base1 in all ten1 he put as many lavers4 #g3ci4 ,and he set the ten bases1 five on the right side of the temple1 and five on the left3 and the sea he put on the right side of the temple1 over against the east southward4 #g3dj4 ,and ,hiram made cauldrons1 and shovels1 and basins1 and finished all the work of king ,solomon in the temple of the ,lord4 #g3da4 ,the two pillars and the two cords of the chapiters1 upon the chapiters of the pillars3 and the two networks1 to cover the two cords1 that were upon the top of the pillars4 #g3db4 ,and four hundred pomegranates for the two networks3 two rows of pomegranates for each network1 to cover the cords of the chapiters1 which were upon the tops of the pillars4 #g3dc4 ,and the ten bases1 and the ten lavers on the bases4 #g3dd4 ,and one sea1 and twelve oxen under the sea4 #g3de4 ,and the cauldrons1 and the shovels1 and the basins4 ,all the vessels that ,hiram made for king ,solomon1 for the house of the ,lord1 were of fine brass4 #g3df4 ,in the plains of the ,jordan1 did the king cast them in a clay ground1 between ,socoth and ,sartham4 #g3dg4 ,and ,solomon placed all the vessels3 but for its exceeding great multitude the brass could not be weighed4 #g3dh4 ,and ,solomon made all the vessels for the house of the ,lord3 the altar of gold1 and the table of gold1 upon which the loaves of proposition should be set3 #g3di4 ,and the golden candlesticks1 five on the right hand1 and five on the left1 over against the oracle1 of pure gold3 and the flowers like lilies1 and the lamps over them of gold3 and golden snuffers1 #g3ej4 ,and pots1 and fleshhooks1 and bowls1 and mortars1 and censers1 of most pure gold3 and the hinges for the doors of the inner house of the holy of holies1 and for the doors of the house of the temple1 were of gold4 #g3ea4 ,and ,solomon finished all the work that he made in the house of the ,lord1 and brought in the things that ,david1 his father1 had dedicated1 the silver and the gold1 and the vessels1 and laid them up in the treasures of the house of the ,lord4 #c ,kings ,chapter #h ,the dedication of the temple3 ,solomon's prayer and sacrifices4 #h3a4 ,then all the ancients of ,israel1 with the princes of the tribes1 and the heads of the families of the children of ,israel1 were assembled to king ,solomon1 in ,jerusalem3 that they might carry the ark of the covenant of the ,lord1 out of the city of ,david1 that is1 out of ,sion4 #h3b4 ,and all ,israel assembled themselves to king ,solomon1 on the festival day1 in the month of ,ethanim1 the same is the seventh month4 #h3c4 ,and all the ancients of ,israel came1 and the priests took up the ark1 #h3d4 ,and carried the ark of the ,lord1 and the tabernacle of the covenant1 and all the vessels of the sanctuary1 that were in the tabernacle3 and the priests and the ,levites carried them4 #h3e4 ,and king ,solomon1 and all the multitude of ,israel1 that were assembled unto him1 went with him before the ark1 and they sacrificed sheep and oxen1 that could not be counted or numbered4 #h3f4 ,and the priests brought in the ark of the covenant of the ,lord into its place1 into the oracle of the temple1 into the holy of holies1 under the wings of the cherubims4 #h3g4 ,for the cherubims spread forth their wings over the place of the ark1 and covered the ark1 and the staves thereof above4 #h3h4 ,and whereas the staves stood out1 the ends of them were seen without1 in the sanctuary before the oracle1 but were not seen farther out1 and there they have been unto this day4 #h3i4 ,now in the ark there was nothing else but the two tables of stone1 which ,moses put there at ,horeb1 when the ,lord made a covenant with the children of ,israel1 when they came out of the land of ,egypt4 ,nothing else1 etc444 ,there was nothing else but the tables of the law within the ark3 but on the outside of the ark1 or near the ark were also the rod of ,aaron1 and a golden urn with manna1 ,heb4 #i4d4 #h3aj4 ,and it came to pass1 when the priests were come out of the sanctuary1 that a cloud filled the house of the ,lord1 #h3aa4 ,and the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud3 for the glory of the ,lord had filled the house of the ,lord4 #h3ab4 ,then ,solomon said3 ,the ,lord said that he would dwell in a cloud4 #h3ac4 ,building1 ,i have built a house for thy dwelling1 to be thy most firm throne for ever4 #h3ad4 ,and the king turned his face1 and blessed all the assembly of ,israel3 for all the assembly of ,israel stood4 #h3ae4 ,and ,solomon said3 ,blessed be the ,lord the ,god of ,israel1 who spoke with his mouth to ,david1 my father1 and with his own hands hath accomplished it1 saying3 #h3af4 ,since the day that ,i brought my people ,israel1 out of ,egypt1 ,i chose no city out of all the tribes of ,israel1 for a house to be built1 that my name might be there3 but ,i chose ,david to be over my people ,israel4 #h3ag4 ,and ,david1 my father1 would have built a house to the name of the ,lord1 the ,god of ,israel3 #h3ah4 ,and the ,lord said to ,david1 my father3 ,whereas1 thou hast thought in thy heart to build a house to my name1 thou hast done well in having this same thing in thy mind4 #h3ai4 ,nevertheless1 thou shalt not build me a house1 but thy son1 that shall come forth out of thy loins1 he shall build a house to my name4 #h3bj4 ,the ,lord hath performed his word which he spoke4 ,and ,i stand in the room of ,david1 my father1 and sit upon the throne of ,israel1 as the ,lord promised3 and have built a house to the name of the ,lord1 the ,god of ,israel4 #h3ba4 ,and ,i have set there a place for the ark1 wherein is the covenant of the ,lord1 which he made with our fathers1 when they came out of the land of ,egypt4 #h3bb4 ,and ,solomon stood before the altar of the ,lord1 in the sight of the assembly of ,israel1 and spread forth his hands towards heaven1 #h3bc4 ,and said3 ,lord ,god of ,israel1 there is no ,god like thee1 in heaven above1 or on the earth beneath3 who keepest covenant and mercy with thy servants1 that have walked before thee with all their heart3 #h3bd4 ,who hast kept with thy servant ,david1 my father1 what thou hast promised him3 with thy mouth thou didst speak1 and with thy hands thou hast performed1 as this day proveth4 #h3be4 ,now1 therefore1 ,o ,lord ,god of ,israel1 keep with thy servant ,david1 my father1 what thou hast spoken to him1 saying3 ,there shall not be taken away of thee a man in my sight1 to sit on the throne of ,israel3 yet so that thy children take heed to their way1 that they walk before me as thou hast walked in my sight4 #h3bf4 ,and now1 ,lord ,god of ,israel1 let thy words be established1 which thou hast spoken to thy servant ,david1 my father4 #h3bg4 ,is it then to be thought that ,god should indeed dwell upon earth8 for if heaven1 and the heavens of heavens1 cannot contain thee1 how much less this house which ,i have built8 #h3bh4 ,but have regard to the prayer of thy servant1 and to his supplications1 ,o ,lord1 my ,god3 hear the hymn and the prayer1 which thy servant prayeth before thee this day3 #h3bi4 ,that thy eyes may be open upon this house1 night and day3 upon the house of which thou hast said3 ,my name shall be there3 that thou mayst hearken to the prayer which thy servant prayeth1 in this place to thee3 #h3cj4 ,that thou mayst hearken to the supplication of thy servant1 and of thy people ,israel1 whatsoever they shall pray for in this place1 and hear them in the place of thy dwelling in heaven2 and when thou hearest1 shew them mercy4 #h3ca4 ,if any man trespass against his neighbour1 and have an oath upon him1 wherewith he is bound1 and come1 because of the oath1 before thy altar1 to thy house1 #h3cb4 ,then hear thou in heaven3 and do and judge thy servants1 condemning the wicked1 and bringing his way upon his own head1 and justifying the just1 and rewarding him according to his justice4 #h3cc4 ,if thy people ,israel shall fly before their enemies 7because they will sin against thee7 and doing penance1 and confessing to thy name1 shall come and pray1 and make supplications to thee in this house3 #h3cd4 ,then hear thou in heaven1 and forgive the sin of thy people ,israel1 and bring them back to the land which thou gavest to their fathers4 #h3ce4 ,if heaven shall be shut up1 and there shall be no rain1 because of their sins1 and they1 praying in this place1 shall do penance to thy name1 and shall be converted from their sins1 by occasion of their afflictions3 #h3cf4 ,then hear thou them in heaven1 and forgive the sins of thy servants1 and of thy people ,israel3 and shew them the good way wherein they should walk1 and give rain upon thy land1 which thou hast given to thy people in possession4 #h3cg4 ,if a famine arise in the land1 or a pestilence1 or corrupt air1 or blasting1 or locust1 or mildew2 if their enemy afflict them1 besieging the gates1 whatsoever plague1 whatsoever infirmity1 #h3ch4 ,whatsoever curse or imprecation shall happen to any man of thy people ,israel3 when a man shall know the wound of his own heart1 and shall spread forth his hands in this house2 #h3ci4 ,then hear thou in heaven1 in the place of thy dwelling1 and forgive1 and do so as to give to every one according to his ways1 as thou shalt see his heart 7for thou only knowest the heart of all the children of men7 #h3dj4 ,that they may fear thee all the days that they live upon the face of the land1 which thou hast given to our fathers4 #h3da4 ,moreover also the stranger1 who is not of thy people ,israel1 when he shall come out of a far conntry for thy name's sake1 7for they shall hear every where of thy great name1 and thy mighty hand1 #h3db4 ,and thy stretched out arm7 so when he shall come1 and shall pray in this place1 #h3dc4 ,then hear thou in heaven1 in the firmament of thy dwelling place1 and do all those things1 for which that stranger shall call upon thee3 that all the people of the earth may learn to fear thy name1 as do thy people ,israel1 and may prove that thy name is called upon on this house1 which ,i have built4 #h3dd4 ,if thy people go out to war against their enemies1 by what way soever thou shalt send them1 they shall pray to thee towards the way of the city1 which thou hast chosen1 and towards the house1 which ,i have built to thy name3 #h3de4 ,and then hear thou in heaven their prayers1 and their supplications1 and do judgment for them4 #h3df4 ,but if they sin against thee1 7for there is no man who sinneth not7 and thou being angry1 deliver them up to their enemies1 so that they be led away captives into the land of their enemies1 far or near2 #h3dg4 ,then if they do penance in their heart1 in the place of captivity1 and being converted1 make supplication to thee in their captivity1 saying3 ,we have sinned1 we have done unjustly1 we have committed wickedness3 #h3dh4 ,and return to thee with all their heart1 and all their soul1 in the land of their enemies1 to which they have been led captives3 and pray to thee towards the way of their land1 which thou gavest to their fathers1 and of the city which thou hast chosen1 and of the temple which ,i have built to thy name3 #h3di4 ,then hear thou in heaven1 in the firmament of thy throne1 their prayers1 and their supplications1 and do judgment for them3 #h3ej4 ,and forgive thy people1 that have sinned against thee1 and all their iniquities1 by which they have transgressed against thee3 and give them mercy before them that have made them captives1 that they may have compassion on them4 #h3ea4 ,for they are thy people1 and thy inheritance1 whom thou hast brought out of the land of ,egypt1 from the midst of the furnace of iron4 #h3eb4 ,that thy eyes may be open to the supplication of thy servant1 and of thy people ,israel1 to hear them in all things for which they shall call upon thee4 #h3ec4 ,for thou hast separated them to thyself for an inheritance1 from amongst all the people of the earth1 as thou hast spoken by ,moses1 thy servant1 when thou broughtest our fathers out of ,egypt1 ,o ,lord ,god4 #h3ed4 ,and it came to pass1 when ,solomon had made an end of praying all this prayer and supplication to the ,lord1 that he rose from before the altar of the ,lord3 for he had fixed both knees on the ground1 and had spread his hands towards heaven4 #h3ee4 ,and he stood1 and blessed all the assembly of ,israel with a loud voice1 saying3 #h3ef4 ,blessed be the ,lord1 who hath given rest to his people ,israel1 according to all that he promised3 there hath not failed so much as one word of all the good things that he promised by his servant ,moses4 #h3eg4 ,the ,lord our ,god be with us1 as he was with our fathers1 and not leave us1 nor cast us off3 #h3eh4 ,but may he incline our hearts to himself1 that we may walk in all his ways1 and keep his commandments1 and his ceremonies1 and all his judgments1 which he commanded our fathers4 #h3ei4 ,and let these my words1 wherewith ,i have prayed before the ,lord1 be nigh unto the ,lord our ,god day and night1 that he may do judgment for his servant1 and for his people ,israel1 day by day3 #h3fj4 ,that all the people of the earth may know1 that the ,lord he is ,god1 and there is no other besides him4 #h3fa4 ,let our hearts also be perfect with the ,lord our ,god1 that we may walk in his statutes1 and keep his commandments1 as at this day4 #h3fb4 ,and the king1 and all ,israel with him1 offered victims before the ,lord4 #h3fc4 ,and ,solomon slew victims of peace offerings1 which he sacrificed to the ,lord1 two and twenty thousand oxen1 and a hundred and twenty thousand sheep so the king1 and all the children of ,israel1 dedicated the temple of the ,lord4 #h3fd4 ,in that day the king sanctified the middle of the court1 that was before the house of the ,lord for there he offered the holocaust1 and sacrifice1 and the fat of the peace offerings3 because the brazen altar that was before the ,lord1 was too little to receive the holocaust1 and sacrifice1 and the fat of the peace offerings4 #h3fe4 ,and ,solomon made at the same time a solemn feast1 and all ,israel with him1 a great multitude1 from the entrance of ,emath to the river of ,egypt1 before the ,lord our ,god1 seven days and seven days1 that is1 fourteen days4 #h3ff4 ,and on the eighth day1 he sent away the people3 and they blessed the king1 and went to their dwellings1 rejoicing1 and glad in heart1 for all the good things that the ,lord had done for ,david1 his servant1 and for ,israel1 his people4 #c ,kings ,chapter #i ,the ,lord appeareth again to ,solomon3 he buildeth cities3 he sendeth a fleet to ,ophir4 #i3a4 ,and it came to pass when ,solomon had finished the building of the house of the ,lord1 and the king's house1 and all that he desired and was pleased to do1 #i3b4 ,that the ,lord appeared to him the second time1 as he had appeared to him in ,gabaon4 #i3c4 ,and the ,lord said to him3 ,i have heard thy prayer and thy supplication1 which thou hast made before me3 ,i have sanctified this house1 which thou hast built1 to put my name there for ever2 and my eyes1 and my heart1 shall be there always4 #i3d4 ,and if thou wilt walk before me1 as thy father walked1 in simplicity of heart1 and in uprightness3 and wilt do all that ,i have commanded thee1 and wilt keep my ordinances1 and my judgments1 ,as thy father walked1 in simplicity of heart444 ,that is1 in the sincerity and integrity of a single heart1 as opposite to all double dealing and deceit4 #i3e4 ,i will establish the throne of thy kingdom over ,israel for ever1 as ,i promised ,david1 thy father1 saying3 ,there shall not fail a man of thy race upon the throne of ,israel4 #i3f4 ,but if you and your children1 revolting1 shall turn away from following me1 and will not keep my commandments1 and my ceremonies1 which ,i have set before you1 but will go and worship strange gods1 and adore them3 #i3g4 ,i will take away ,israel from the face of the land which ,i have given them2 and the temple which ,i have sanctified to my name1 ,i will cast out of my sight2 and ,israel shall be a proverb1 and a byword among all people4 #i3h4 ,and this house shall be made an example of3 every one that shall pass by it1 shall be astonished1 and shall hiss1 and say3 ,why hath the ,lord done thus to this land1 and to this house8 #i3i4 ,and they shall answer3 ,because they forsook the ,lord their ,god1 who brought their fathers out of the land of ,egypt1 and followed strange gods1 and adored them1 and worshipped them3 therefore hath the ,lord brought upon them all this evil4 #i3aj4 ,and when twenty years were ended1 after ,solomon had built the two houses2 that is1 the house of the ,lord1 and the house of the king1 #i3aa4 7,hiram1 the king of ,tyre1 furnishing ,solomon with cedar trees1 and fir trees1 and gold1 according to all he had need of7 then ,solomon gave ,hiram twenty cities in the land of ,galilee4 #i3ab4 ,and ,hiram came out of ,tyre1 to see the towns which ,solomon had given him1 and they pleased him not2 #i3ac4 ,and he said3 ,are these the cities which thou hast given me1 brother8 ,and he called them the land of ,chabul1 unto this day4 ,chabul444 ,that is1 dirty or displeasing4 #i3ad4 ,and ,hiram sent to king ,solomon a hundred and twenty talents of gold4 #i3ae4 ,this is the sum of the expenses1 which king ,solomon offered to build the house of the ,lord1 and his own house1 and ,mello1 and the wall of ,jerusalem1 and ,heser1 and ,mageddo1 and ,gazer4 #i3af4 ,pharao1 the king of ,egypt1 came up and took ,gazer1 and burnt it with fire3 and slew the ,chanaanite that dwelt in the city1 and gave it for a dowry to his daughter1 ,solomon's wife4 #i3ag4 ,so ,solomon built ,gazer1 and ,bethhoron the nether1 #i3ah4 ,and ,baalath1 and ,palmira1 in the land of the wilderness4 #i3ai4 ,and all the towns that belonged to himself1 and were not walled1 he fortified2 the cities also of the chariots1 and the cities of the horsemen1 and whatsoever he had a mind to build in ,jerusalem1 and in ,libanus1 and in all the land of his dominion4 #i3bj4 ,all the people that were left of the ,amorrhites1 and ,hethites1 and ,pherezites1 and ,hevites1 and ,jebusites1 that are not of the children of ,israel3 #i3ba4 ,their children1 that were left in the land2 to wit1 such as the children of ,israel had not been able to destroy1 ,solomon made tributary unto this day4 #i3bb4 ,but of the children of ,israel1 ,solomon made not any to be bondmen1 but they were warriors1 and his servants1 and his princes1 and captains1 and overseers of the chariots and horses4 #i3bc4 ,and there were five hundred and fifty chief officers set over all the works of ,solomon1 and they had people under them1 and had charge over the appointed works4 #i3bd4 ,and the daughter of ,pharao came up out of the city of ,david to her house1 which ,solomon had built for her3 then did he build ,mello4 #i3be4 ,solomon also offered three times every year holocausts1 and victims of peace offerings1 upon the altar which he had built to the ,lord1 and he burnt incense before the ,lord3 and the temple was finished4 #i3bf4 ,and king ,solomon made a fleet in ,asiongaber1 which is by ,ailath1 on the shore of the ,red ,sea1 in the land of ,edom4 #i3bg4 ,and ,hiram sent his servants in the fleet1 sailors that had knowledge of the sea1 with the servants of ,solomon4 #i3bh4 ,and they came to ,ophir2 and they brought from thence to king ,solomon four hundred and twenty talents of gold4 #c ,kings ,chapter #aj ,the queen of ,saba cometh to king ,solomon3 his riches and glory4 #aj3a4 ,and the queen of ,saba having heard of the fame of ,solomon in the name of the ,lord1 came to try him with hard questions4 #aj3b4 ,and entering into ,jerusalem with a great train1 and riches1 and camels that carried spices1 and an immense quantity of gold1 and precious stones1 she came to king ,solomon1 and spoke to him all that she had in her heart4 #aj3c4 ,and ,solomon informed her of all the things she proposed to him3 there was not any word the king was ignorant of1 and which he could not answer her4 #aj3d4 ,and when the queen of ,saba saw all the wisdom of ,solomon1 and the house which he had built1 #aj3e4 ,and the meat of his table1 and the apartments of his servants1 and the order of his ministers1 and their apparel1 and the cupbearers1 and the holocausts1 which he offered in the house of the ,lord1 she had no longer any spirit in her2 #aj3f4 ,and she said to the king3 ,the report is true1 which ,i heard in my own country1 #aj3g4 ,concerning thy words1 and concerning thy wisdom4 ,and ,i did not believe them that told me1 till ,i came myself1 and saw with my own eyes1 and have found that the half hath not been told me3 thy wisdom and thy works exceed the fame which ,i heard4 #aj3h4 ,blessed are thy men1 and blessed are thy servants1 who stand before thee always1 and hear thy wisdom4 #aj3i4 ,blessed be the ,lord thy ,god1 whom thou hast pleased1 and who hath set thee upon the throne of ,israel1 because the ,lord hath loved ,israel for ever1 and hath appointed thee king1 to do judgment and justice4 #aj3aj4 ,and she gave the king a hundred and twenty talents of gold1 and of spices a very great store1 and precious stones3 there was brought no more such abundance of spices as these which the queen of ,saba gave to king ,solomon4 #aj3aa4 7,the navy also of ,hiram1 which brought gold from ,ophir1 brought from ,ophir great plenty of thyine trees1 and precious stones4 #aj3ab4 ,and the king made of the thyine trees the rails of the house of the ,lord1 and of the king's house3 and citterns and harps for singers3 there were no such thyine trees as these brought nor seen unto this day47 #aj3ac4 ,and king ,solomon gave the queen of ,saba all that she desired1 and asked of him3 besides what he offered her of himself of his royal bounty4 ,and she returned1 and went to her own country1 with her servants4 #aj3ad4 ,and the weight of the gold that was brought to ,solomon every year1 was six hundred and sixty-six talents of gold3 #aj3ae4 ,besides that which the men brought him that were over the tributes1 and the merchants1 and they that sold by retail1 and all the kings of ,arabia1 and the governors of the country4 #aj3af4 ,and ,solomon made two hundred shields of the purest gold3 he allowed six hundred sicles of gold for the plates of one shield4 #aj3ag4 ,and three hundred targets of fine gold3 three hundred pounds of gold covered one target3 and the king put them in the house of the forest of ,libanus4 #aj3ah4 ,king ,solomon also made a great throne of ivory3 and overlaid it with the finest gold4 #aj3ai4 ,it had six steps3 and the top of the throne was round behind3 and there were two hands on either side holding the seat3 and two lions stood1 one at each hand1 #aj3bj4 ,and twelve little lions stood upon the six steps1 on the one side and on the other3 there was no such work made in any kingdom4 #aj3ba4 ,moreover1 all the vessels out of which king ,solomon drank1 were of gold3 and all the furniture of the house of the forest of ,libanus was of most pure gold3 there was no silver1 nor was any account made of it in the days of ,solomon3 #aj3bb4 ,for the king's navy1 once in three years1 went with the navy of ,hiram by sea to ,tharsis1 and brought from thence gold1 and silver1 and elephants' teeth1 and apes1 and peacocks4 #aj3bc4 ,and king ,solomon exceeded all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom4 #aj3bd4 ,and all the earth desired to see ,solomon's face1 to hear his wisdom1 which ,god had given in his heart4 #aj3be4 ,and every one brought him presents1 vessels of silver and of gold1 garments1 and armour1 and spices1 and horses1 and mules1 every year4 #aj3bf4 ,and ,solomon gathered together chariots and horsemen1 and he had a thousand four hundred chariots1 and twelve thousand horsemen3 and he bestowed them in fenced cities1 and with the king in ,jerusalem4 #aj3bg4 ,and he made silver to be as plentiful in ,jerusalem as stones3 and cedars to be as common as sycamores which grow in the plains4 #aj3bh4 ,and horses were brought for ,solomon out of ,egypt1 and ,coa3 for the king's merchants bought them out of ,coa1 and brought them at a set price4 #aj3bi4 ,and a chariot of four horses came out of ,egypt1 for six hundred sicles of silver1 and a horse for a hundred and fifty4 ,and after this manner did all the kings of the ,hethites1 and of ,syria1 sell horses4 #c ,kings ,chapter #aa ,solomon by means of his wives falleth into idolatry3 ,god raiseth him adversaries1 ,adad1 ,razon1 and ,jeroboam3 ,solomon dieth4 #aa3a4 ,and king ,solomon loved many strange women1 besides the daughter of ,pharao1 and women of ,moab1 and of ,ammon1 and of ,edom1 and of ,sidon1 and of the ,hethites3 #aa3b4 ,of the nations concerning which the ,lord said to the children of ,israel3 ,you shall not go in unto them1 neither shall any of them come into yours3 for they will most certainly turn away your hearts to follow their gods4 ,and to these was ,solomon joined with a most ardent love4 #aa3c4 ,and he had seven hundred wives as queens1 and three hundred concubines3 and the women turned away his heart4 #aa3d4 ,and when he was now old1 his heart was turned away by women to follow strange gods3 and his heart was not perfect with the ,lord his ,god1 as was the heart of ,david1 his father4 #aa3e4 ,but ,solomon worshipped ,astarthe1 the goddess of the ,sidonians1 and ,moloch1 the idol of the ,ammonites4 #aa3f4 ,and ,solomon did that which was not pleasing before the ,lord1 and did not fully follow the ,lord1 as ,david1 his father4 #aa3g4 ,then ,solomon built a temple for ,chamos1 the idol of ,moab1 on the hill that is over against ,jerusalem1 and for ,moloch1 the idol of the children of ,ammon4 #aa3h4 ,and he did in this manner for all his wives that were strangers1 who burnt incense1 and offered sacrifice to their gods4 #aa3i4 ,and the ,lord was angry with ,solomon1 because his mind was turned away from the ,lord1 the ,god of ,israel1 who had appeared to him twice2 #aa3aj4 ,and had commanded him concerning this thing1 that he should not follow strange gods3 but he kept not the things which the ,lord commanded him4 #aa3aa4 ,the ,lord therefore said to ,solomon3 ,because thou hast done this1 and hast not kept my covenant1 and my precepts1 which ,i have commanded thee1 ,i will divide and rend thy kingdom1 and will give it to thy servant4 #aa3ab4 ,nevertheless1 in thy days ,i will not do it1 for ,david thy father's sake3 but ,i will rend it out of the hand of thy son4 #aa3ac4 ,neither will ,i take away the whole kingdom2 but ,i will give one tribe to thy son1 for the sake of ,david1 my servant1 and ,jerusalem1 which ,i have chosen4 ,one tribe444 ,besides that of ,juda1 his own native tribe4 #aa3ad4 ,and the ,lord raised up an adversary to ,solomon1 ,adad1 the ,edomite1 of the king's seed1 in ,edom4 #aa3ae4 ,for when ,david was in ,edom1 and ,joab1 the general of the army1 was gone up to bury them that were slain1 and had killed every male in ,edom1 #aa3af4 7,for ,joab remained there six months with all ,israel1 till he had slain every male in ,edom17 #aa3ag4 ,then ,adad fled1 he and certain ,edomites of his father's servants1 with him1 to go into ,egypt3 and ,adad was then a little boy4 #aa3ah4 ,and they arose out of ,madian1 and came into ,pharan1 and they took men with them from ,pharan1 and went into ,egypt1 to ,pharao1 the king of ,egypt3 who gave him a house1 and appointed him victuals1 and assigned him land4 #aa3ai4 ,and ,adad found great favour before ,pharao1 insomuch that he gave him to wife the own sister of his wife1 ,taphnes1 the queen4 #aa3bj4 ,and the sister of ,taphnes bore him his son1 ,genubath2 and ,taphnes brought him up in the house of ,pharao3 and ,genubath dwelt with ,pharao among his children4 #aa3ba4 ,and when ,adad heard in ,egypt that ,david slept with his fathers1 and that ,joab1 the general of the army1 was dead1 he said to ,pharao3 ,let me depart1 that ,i may go to my own country4 #aa3bb4 ,and ,pharao said to him3 ,why1 what is wanting to thee with me1 that thou seekest to go to thy own country8 ,but he answered3 ,nothing2 yet ,i beseech thee to let me go4 #aa3bc4 ,god also raised up against him an adversary1 ,razon1 the son of ,eliada1 who had fled from his master1 ,adarezer1 the king of ,soba4 #aa3bd4 ,and he gathered men against him1 and he became a captain of robbers1 when ,david slew them of ,soba3 and they went to ,damascus1 and dwelt there1 and they made him king in ,damascus4 #aa3be4 ,and he was an adversary to ,israel all the days of ,solomon3 and this is the evil of ,adad1 and his hatred against ,israel2 and he reigned in ,syria4 #aa3bf4 ,jeroboam also1 the son of ,nabat1 an ,ephrathite1 of ,sareda1 a servant of ,solomon1 whose mother was named ,sarua1 a widow woman1 lifted up his hand against the king4 #aa3bg4 ,and this is the cause of his rebellion against him2 for ,solomon built ,mello1 and filled up the breach of the city of ,david1 his father4 #aa3bh4 ,and ,jeroboam was a valiant and mighty man3 and ,solomon seeing him a young man ingenious and industrious1 made him chief over the tributes of all the house of ,joseph4 #aa3bi4 ,so it came to pass at that time1 that ,jeroboam went out of ,jerusalem1 and the prophet ,ahias1 the ,silonite1 clad with a new garment1 found him in the way3 and they two were alone in the field4 #aa3cj4 ,and ,ahias taking his new garment1 wherewith he was clad1 divided it into twelve parts3 #aa3ca4 ,and he said to ,jeroboam3 ,take to thee ten pieces3 for thus saith the ,lord1 the ,god of ,israel3 ,behold1 ,i will rend the kingdom out of the hand of ,solomon1 and will give thee ten tribes4 #aa3cb4 ,but one tribe shall remain to him for the sake of my servant1 ,david1 and ,jerusalem1 the city which ,i have chosen out of all the tribes of ,israel3 #aa3cc4 ,because he hath forsaken me1 and hath adored ,astarthe1 the goddess of the ,sidonians1 and ,chamos1 the god of ,moab1 and ,moloch1 the god of the children of ,ammon3 and hath not walked in my ways1 to do justice before me1 and to keep my precepts1 and judgments1 as did ,david1 his father4 #aa3cd4 ,yet ,i will not take away all the kingdom out of his hand1 but ,i will make him prince all the days of his life1 for ,david my servant's sake1 whom ,i chose1 who kept my commandments1 and my precepts4 #aa3ce4 ,but ,i will take away the kingdom out of his son's hand1 and will give thee ten tribes3 #aa3cf4 ,and to his son ,i will give one tribe1 that there may remain a lamp for my servant1 ,david1 before me always in ,jerusalem1 the city which ,i have chosen1 that my name might be there4 #aa3cg4 ,and ,i will take thee1 and thou shalt reign over all that thy soul desireth1 and thou shalt be king over ,israel4 #aa3ch4 ,if then thou wilt hearken to all that ,i shall command thee1 and wilt walk in my ways1 and do what is right before me1 keeping my commandments and my precepts1 as ,david1 my servant1 did3 ,i will be with thee1 and will build thee up a faithful house1 as ,i built a house for ,david1 and ,i will deliver ,israel to thee3 #aa3ci4 ,and ,i will for this afflict the seed of ,david1 but yet not for ever4 #aa3dj4 ,solomon1 therefore1 sought to kill ,jeroboam3 but he arose1 and fled into ,egypt1 to ,sesac1 the king of ,egypt1 and was in ,egypt till the death of ,solomon4 #aa3da4 ,and the rest of the words of ,solomon1 and all that he did and his wisdom3 behold they are all written in the book of the words of the days of ,solomon4 ,the book of the words1 etc444 ,this book is lost1 with divers others mentioned in holy writ4 #aa3db4 ,and the days that ,solomon reigned in ,jerusalem1 over all ,israel1 were forty years4 #aa3dc4 ,and ,solomon slept with his fathers1 and was buried in the city of ,david1 his father2 and ,roboam1 his son1 reigned in his stead4 ,solomon slept1 etc444 ,that is1 died4 ,he was then about fifty-eight years of age1 having reigned forty years4 #c ,kings ,chapter #ab ,roboam1 following the counsel of young men alienateth from him the minds of the people4 ,they make ,jeroboam king over ten tribes3 he setteth up idolatry4 #ab3a4 ,and ,roboam went to ,sichem3 for thither were all ,israel come together to make him king4 #ab3b4 ,but ,jeroboam1 the son of ,nabat1 who was yet in ,egypt1 a fugitive from the face of king ,solomon1 hearing of his death1 returned out of ,egypt4 #ab3c4 ,and they sent and called him3 and ,jeroboam came1 and all the multitude of ,israel1 and they spoke to ,roboam1 saying3 #ab3d4 ,thy father laid a grievous yoke upon us3 now1 therefore1 do thou take off a little of the grievous service of thy father1 and of his most heavy yoke1 which he put upon us1 and we will serve thee4 #ab3e4 ,and he said to them3 ,go till the third day1 and come to me again4 ,and when the people was gone1 #ab3f4 ,king ,roboam took counsel with the old men1 that stood before ,solomon1 his father1 while he yet lived1 and he said3 ,what counsel do you give me1 that ,i may answer this people8 #ab3g4 ,they said to him3 ,if thou wilt yield to this people to day1 and condescend to them1 and grant their petition1 and wilt speak gentle words to them1 they will be thy servants always4 #ab3h4 ,but he left the counsel of the old men1 which they had given him1 and consulted with the young men that had been brought up with him1 and stood before him4 #ab3i4 ,and he said to them3 ,what counsel do you give me1 that ,i may answer this people1 who have said to me3 ,make the yoke1 which thy father put upon us1 lighter8 #ab3aj4 ,and the young men that had been brought up with him1 said3 ,thus shalt thou speak to this people1 who have spoken to thee1 saying3 ,thy father made our yoke heavy1 do thou ease us4 ,thou shalt say to them3 ,my little finger is thicker than the back of my father4 #ab3aa4 ,and now my father put a heavy yoke upon you1 but ,i will add to your yoke3 my father beat you with whips1 but ,i will beat you with scorpions4 #ab3ab4 ,so ,jeroboam1 and all the people1 came to ,roboam the third day1 as the king had appointed1 saying3 ,come to me again the third day4 #ab3ac4 ,and the king answered the people roughly1 leaving the counsel of the old men1 which they had given him1 #ab3ad4 ,and he spoke to them according to the counsel of the young men1 saying3 ,my father made your yoke heavy1 but ,i will add to your yoke3 ,my father beat you with whips1 but ,i will beat you with scorpions4 #ab3ae4 ,and the king condescended not to the people3 for the ,lord was turned away from him1 to make good his word1 which he had spoken in the hand of ,ahias1 the ,silonite1 to ,jeroboam1 the son of ,nabat4 #ab3af4 ,then the people1 seeing that the king would not hearken to them1 answered him1 saying3 ,what portion have we in ,david8 or what inheritance in the son of ,isai8 ,go home to thy dwellings1 ,o ,israel3 now1 ,david1 look to thy own house4 ,so ,israel departed to their dwellings4 #ab3ag4 ,but as for all the children of ,israel that dwelt in the cities of ,juda1 ,roboam reigned over them4 #ab3ah4 ,then king ,roboam sent ,aduram1 who was over the tribute3 and all ,israel stoned him1 and he died4 ,wherefore king ,roboam made haste to get him up into his chariot1 and he fled to ,jerusalem3 #ab3ai4 ,and ,israel revolted from the house of ,david1 unto this day4 #ab3bj4 ,and it came to pass when all ,israel heard that ,jeroboam was come again1 that they gathered an assembly1 and sent and called him1 and made him king over all ,israel1 and there was none that followed the house of ,david but the tribe of ,juda only4 ,juda only444 ,benjamin was a small tribe1 and so intermixed with the tribe of ,juda1 7the very city of ,jerusalem being partly in ,juda1 partly in ,benjamin17 that they are here counted but as one tribe4 #ab3ba4 ,and ,roboam came to ,jerusalem1 and gathered together all the house of ,juda1 and the tribe of ,benjamin1 a hundred fourscore thousand chosen men for war1 to fight against the house of ,israel1 and to bring the kingdom again under ,roboam1 the son of ,solomon4 #ab3bb4 ,but the word of the ,lord came to ,semeias1 the man of ,god1 saying3 #ab3bc4 ,speak to ,roboam1 the son of ,solomon1 the king of ,juda1 and to all the house of ,juda1 and ,benjamin1 and the rest of the people1 saying3 #ab3bd4 ,thus saith the ,lord3 ,you shall not go up1 nor fight against your brethren1 the children of ,israel3 let every man return to his house1 for this thing is from me4 ,they hearkened to the word of the ,lord1 and returned from their journey1 as the ,lord had commanded them4 #ab3be4 ,and ,jeroboam built ,sichem in mount ,ephraim1 and dwelt there1 and going out from thence1 he built ,phanuel4 #ab3bf4 ,and ,jeroboam said in his heart3 ,now shall the kingdom return to the house of ,david1 #ab3bg4 ,if this people go up to offer sacrifices in the house of the ,lord at ,jerusalem3 and the heart of this people will turn to their lord ,roboam1 the king of ,juda1 and they will kill me1 and return to him4 #ab3bh4 ,and finding out a device1 he made two golden calves1 and said to them3 ,go ye up no more to ,jerusalem3 ,behold thy gods1 ,o ,israel1 who brought thee out of the land of ,egypt4 ,golden calves444 ,it is likely1 by making his gods in this form1 he mimicked the ,egyptians1 among whom he had sojourned1 who worshipped their ,apis and their ,osiris under the form of a bullock4 #ab3bi4 ,and he set the one in ,bethel1 and the other in ,dan3 ,bethel and ,dan444 ,bethel was a city of the tribe of ,ephraim in the southern part of the dominions of ,jeroboam1 about six leagues from ,jerusalem2 ,dan was in the extremity of his dominions to the north in the confines of ,syria4 #ab3cj4 ,and this thing became an occasion of sin3 for the people went to adore the calf as far as ,dan4 #ab3ca4 ,and he made temples in the high places1 and priests of the lowest of the people1 who were not of the sons of ,levi4 #ab3cb4 ,and he appointed a feast in the eighth month1 on the fifteenth day of the month1 after the manner of the feast that was celebrated in ,juda4 ,and going up to the altar1 he did in like manner in ,bethel1 to sacrifice to the calves1 which he had made3 and he placed in ,bethel priests of the high places1 which he had made4 #ab3cc4 ,and he went up to the altar1 which he had built in ,bethel1 on the fifteenth day of the eighth month1 which he had devised of his own heart3 and he ordained a feast to the children of ,israel1 and went up on the altar to burn incense4 #c ,kings ,chapter #ac ,a prophet sent from ,juda to ,bethel foretelleth the birth of ,josias1 and the destruction of ,jeroboam's altar4 ,jeroboam's hand offering violence to the prophet withereth1 but is restored by the prophet's prayer3 the same prophet is deceived by another prophet1 and slain by a lion4 #ac3a4 ,and behold there came a man of ,god out of ,juda1 by the word of the ,lord1 to ,bethel1 when ,jeroboam was standing upon the altar1 and burning incense4 #ac3b4 ,and he cried out against the altar in the word of the ,lord1 and said3 ,o altar1 altar1 thus saith the ,lord3 ,behold a child shall be born to the house of ,david1 ,josias by name1 and he shall immolate upon thee the priests of the high places1 who now burn incense upon thee1 and he shall burn men's bones upon thee4 #ac3c4 ,and he gave a sign the same day1 saying3 ,this shall be the sign1 that the ,lord hath spoken3 ,behold the altar shall be rent1 and the ashes that are upon it1 shall be poured out4 #ac3d4 ,and when the king had heard the word of the man of ,god1 which he had cried out against the altar in ,bethel1 he stretched forth his hand from the altar1 saying3 ,lay hold on him4 ,and his hand which he stretched forth against him1 withered3 and he was not able to draw it back again to him4 #ac3e4 ,the altar also was rent1 and the ashes were poured out from the altar1 according to the sign which the man of ,god had given before in the word of the ,lord4 #ac3f4 ,and the king said to the man of ,god3 ,entreat the face of the ,lord thy ,god1 and pray for me1 that my hand may be restored to me4 ,and the man of ,god besought the face of the ,lord1 and the king's hand was restored to him1 and it became as it was before4 #ac3g4 ,and the king said to the man of ,god3 ,come home with me to dine1 and ,i will make thee presents4 #ac3h4 ,and the man of ,god answered the king3 ,if thou wouldst give me half thy house1 ,i will not go with thee1 nor eat bread1 nor drink water in this place3 #ac3i4 ,for so it was enjoined me by the word of the ,lord commanding me3 ,thou shalt not eat bread1 nor drink water1 nor return by the same way that thou camest4 #ac3aj4 ,so he departed by another way1 and returned not by the way that he came into ,bethel4 #ac3aa4 ,now a certain old prophet dwelt in ,bethel1 and his sons came to him1 and told him all the works that the man of ,god had done that day in ,bethel3 and they told their father the words which he had spoken to the king4 #ac3ab4 ,and their father said to them3 ,what way went he8 ,his sons shewed him the way by which the man of ,god went1 who came out of ,juda4 #ac3ac4 ,and he said to his sons3 ,saddle me the ass4 ,and when they had saddled it1 he got up1 #ac3ad4 ,and went after the man of ,god1 and found him sitting under a turpentine tree3 and he said to him3 ,art thou the man of ,god who camest from ,juda8 ,he answered3 ,i am4 #ac3ae4 ,and he said to him3 ,come home with me to eat bread4 #ac3af4 ,but he said3 ,i must not return1 nor go with thee1 neither will ,i eat bread1 or drink water in this place3 #ac3ag4 ,because the ,lord spoke to me1 in the word of the ,lord1 saying3 ,thou shalt not eat bread1 and thou shalt not drink water there1 nor return by the way thou wentest4 #ac3ah4 ,he said to him3 ,i also am a prophet like unto thee3 and an angel spoke to me1 in the word of the ,lord1 saying3 ,bring him back with thee into thy house1 that he may eat bread1 and drink water4 ,he deceived him1 ,an angel spoke to me1 etc444 ,this old man of ,bethel was indeed a prophet1 but he sinned in thus deceiving the man of ,god2 the more because he pretended a revelation for what he did4 #ac3ai4 ,and brought him back with him3 so he ate bread1 and drank water in his house4 #ac3bj4 ,and as they sat at table1 the word of the ,lord came to the prophet that brought him back3 #ac3ba4 ,and he cried out to the man of ,god who came out of ,juda1 saying3 ,thus saith the ,lord3 ,because thou hast not been obedient to the ,lord1 and hast not kept the commandment which the ,lord thy ,god commanded thee1 #ac3bb4 ,and hast returned1 and eaten bread1 and drunk water in the place wherein he commanded thee that thou shouldst not eat bread1 nor drink water1 thy dead body shall not be brought into the sepulchre of thy fathers4 #ac3bc4 ,and when he had eaten and drunk1 he saddled his ass for the prophet1 whom he had brought back4 #ac3bd4 ,and when he was gone1 a lion found him in the way1 and killed him1 and his body was cast in the way3 and the ass stood by him1 and the lion stood by the dead body4 ,killed him444 ,thus the ,lord often punishes his servants here1 that he may spare them hereafter4 ,for the generality of divines are of opinion1 that the sin of this prophet1 considered with all its circumstances1 was not mortal4 #ac3be4 ,and behold1 men passing by1 saw the dead body cast in the way1 and the lion standing by the body4 ,and they came and told it in the city1 wherein that old prophet dwelt4 #ac3bf4 ,and when that prophet1 who had brought him back out of the way1 heard of it1 he said3 ,it is the man of ,god1 that was disobedient to the mouth of the ,lord1 and the ,lord hath delivered him to the lion1 and he hath torn him1 and killed him1 according to the word of the ,lord1 which he spoke to him4 #ac3bg4 ,and he said to his sons3 ,saddle me an ass4 ,and when they had saddled it1 #ac3bh4 ,and he was gone1 he found the dead body cast in the way1 and the ass and the lion standing by the carcass3 the lion had not eaten of the dead body1 nor hurt the ass4 #ac3bi4 ,and the prophet took up the body of the man of ,god1 and laid it upon the ass1 and going back brought it into the city of the old prophet1 to mourn for him4 #ac3cj4 ,and he laid his dead body in his own sepulchre3 and they mourned over him1 saying3 ,alas6 alas1 my brother4 #ac3ca4 ,and when they had mourned over him1 he said to his sons3 ,when ,i am dead1 bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of ,god is buried3 lay my bones beside his bones4 #ac3cb4 ,for assuredly the word shall come to pass which he hath foretold in the word of the ,lord1 against the altar that is in ,bethel3 and against all the temples of the high places1 that are in the cities of ,samaria4 #ac3cc4 ,after these words1 ,jeroboam came not back from his wicked way3 but on the contrary1 he made of the meanest of the people priests of the high places3 whosoever would1 he filled his hand1 and he was made a priest of the high places4 #ac3cd4 ,and for this cause did the house of ,jeroboam sin1 and was cut off1 and destroyed from the face of the earth4 #c ,kings ,chapter #ad ,ahias prophesieth the destruction of the family of ,jeroboam4 ,he dieth1 and is succeeded by his son ,nadab4 ,the king of ,egypt taketh and pillageth ,jerusalem4 ,roboam dieth and his son ,abiam succeedeth4 #ad3a4 ,at that time ,abia1 the son of ,jeroboam1 fell sick4 #ad3b4 ,and ,jeroboam said to his wife3 ,arise1 and change thy dress1 that thou be not known to be the wife of ,jeroboam1 and go to ,silo1 where ,ahias1 the prophet is1 who told me that ,i should reign over this people4 #ad3c4 ,take also with thee ten loaves1 and cracknels1 and a pot of honey1 and go to him3 for he will tell thee what will become of this child4 #ad3d4 ,jeroboam's wife did as he told her3 and rising up1 went to ,silo1 and came to the house of ,ahias2 but he could not see1 for his eyes were dim by reason of his age4 #ad3e4 ,and the ,lord said to ,ahias3 ,behold the wife of ,jeroboam cometh in1 to consult thee concerning her son1 that is sick3 thus and thus shalt thou speak to her4 ,so when she was coming in1 and made as if she were another woman1 #ad3f4 ,ahias heard the sound of her feet1 coming in at the door1 and said3 ,come in1 thou wife of ,jeroboam3 why dost thou feign thyself to be another8 ,but ,i am sent to thee with heavy tidings4 #ad3g4 ,go1 and tell ,jeroboam3 ,thus saith the ,lord1 the ,god of ,israel3 ,for as much as ,i exalted thee from among the people1 and made thee prince over my people ,israel2 #ad3h4 ,and rent the kingdom away from thc house of ,david1 and gave it to thee1 and thou hast not been as my servant1 ,david1 who kept my commandments1 and followed me with all his heart1 doing that which was well pleasing in my sight3 #ad3i4 ,but hast done evil above all that were before thee1 and hast made thee strange gods1 and molten gods1 to provoke me to anger1 and hast cast me behind thy back3 #ad3aj4 ,therefore1 behold ,i will bring evils upon the house of ,jeroboam1 and will cut off from ,jeroboam him that pisseth against the wall1 and him that is shut up1 and the last in ,israel3 and ,i will sweep away the remnant of the house of ,jeroboam1 as dung is swept away till all be clean4 #ad3aa4 ,them that shall die of ,jeroboam in the city1 the dogs shall eat3 and them that shall die in the field1 the birds of the air shall devour3 for the ,lord hath spoken it4 #ad3ab4 ,arise thou1 therefore1 and go to thy house3 and when thy feet shall be entering into the city1 the child shall die1 #ad3ac4 ,and all ,israel shall mourn for him1 and shall bury him3 for he only of ,jeroboam shall be laid in a sepulchre1 because in his regard there is found a good word from the ,lord1 the ,god of ,israel1 in the house of ,jeroboam4 #ad3ad4 ,and the ,lord hath appointed himself a king over ,israel1 who shall cut off the house of ,jeroboam in this day1 and in this time3 #ad3ae4 ,and the ,lord ,god shall strike ,israel as a reed is shaken in the water3 and he shall root up ,israel out of this good land1 which he gave to their fathers1 and shall scatter them beyond the river3 because they have made to themselves groves1 to provoke the ,lord4 #ad3af4 ,and the ,lord shall give up ,israel for the sins of ,jeroboam1 who hath sinned1 and made ,israel to sin4 #ad3ag4 ,and the wife of ,jeroboam arose1 and departed1 and came to ,thersa3 and when she was coming in to the threshold of the house1 the child died1 #ad3ah4 ,and they buried him4 ,and all ,israel mourned for him1 according to the word of the ,lord1 which he spoke by the hand of his servant ,ahias1 the prophet4 #ad3ai4 ,and the rest of the acts of ,jeroboam1 how he fought1 and how he reigned1 behold they are written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of ,israel4 ,the book of the words of the days of the kings of ,israel444 ,this book1 which is often mentioned in the ,book of ,kings1 is long since lost4 ,for as to the books of ,paralipomenon1 or ,chronicles1 7which the ,hebrews call the words of the days17 they were certainly written after the ,book of ,kings1 since they frequently refer to them4 #ad3bj4 ,and the days that ,jeroboam reigned1 were two and twenty years3 and he slept with his fathers3 and ,nadab1 his son1 reigned in his stead4 #ad3ba4 ,and ,roboam1 the son of ,solomon1 reigned in ,juda3 ,roboam was one and forty years old when he began to reign3 and he reigned seventeen years in ,jerusalem1 the city which the ,lord chose out of all the tribes of ,israel to put his name there4 ,and his mother's name was ,naama1 an ,ammonitess4 #ad3bb4 ,and ,juda did evil in the sight of the ,lord1 and provoked him above all that their fathers had done1 in their sins which they committed4 #ad3bc4 ,for they also built them altars1 and statues1 and groves1 upon every high hill1 and under every green tree3 #ad3bd4 ,there were also the effeminate in the land1 and they did according to all the abominations of the people1 whom the ,lord had destroyed before the face of the children of ,israel4 ,the effeminate444 ,catamites1 or men addicted to unnatural lust4 #ad3be4 ,and in the fifth year of the reign of ,roboam1 ,sesac1 king of ,egypt1 came up against ,jerusalem4 #ad3bf4 ,and he took away the treasures of the house of the ,lord1 and the king's treasures1 and carried all off3 as also the shields of gold which ,solomon had made3 #ad3bg4 ,and ,roboam made shields of brass instead of them1 and delivered them into the hand of the captains of the shieldbearers1 and of them that kept watch before the gate of the king's house4 #ad3bh4 ,and when the king went into the house of the ,lord1 they whose office it was to go before him1 carried them3 and afterwards they brought them back to the armoury of the shieldbearers4 #ad3bi4 ,now the rest of the acts of ,roboam1 and all that he did1 behold they are written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of ,juda4 #ad3cj4 ,and there was war between ,roboam and ,jeroboam always4 #ad3ca4 ,and ,roboam slept with his fathers1 and was buried with them1 in the city of ,david3 and his mother's name was ,naama1 an ,ammonitess3 and ,abiam1 his son1 reigned in his stead4 #c ,kings ,chapter #ae ,the acts of ,abiam and of ,asa kings of ,juda4 ,and of ,nadab and ,baasa kings of ,israel4 #ae3a4 ,now in the eighteenth year of the reign of ,jeroboam1 the son of ,nabat1 ,abiam reigned over ,juda4 #ae3b4 ,he reigned three years in ,jerusalem3 the name of his mother was ,maacha1 the daughter of ,abessalom4 ,maacha1 etc444 ,she is called elsewhere ,michaia1 daughter of ,uriel2 but it was common in those days for the same person to have two names4 #ae3c4 ,and he walked in all the sins of his father1 which he had done before him3 and his heart was not perfect with the ,lord his ,god1 as was the heart of ,david1 his father4 #ae3d4 ,but for ,david's sake the ,lord his ,god gave him a lamp in ,jerusalem1 to set up his son after him1 and to establish ,jerusalem3 #ae3e4 ,because ,david had done that which was right in the eyes of the ,lord1 and had not turned aside from any thing that he commanded him1 all the days of his life1 except the matter of ,urias1 the ,hethite4 #ae3f4 ,but there was war between ,roboam and ,jeroboam all the time of his life4 #ae3g4 ,and the rest of the words of ,abiam1 and all that he did1 are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of ,juda8 ,and there was war between ,abiam and ,jeroboam4 #ae3h4 ,and ,abiam slept with his fathers1 and they buried him in the city of ,david3 and ,asa1 his son1 reigned in his stead4 #ae3i4 ,so in the twentieth year of ,jeroboam1 king of ,israel1 reigned ,asa1 king of ,juda1 #ae3aj4 ,and he reigned one and forty years in ,jerusalem4 ,his mother's name was ,maacha1 the daughter of ,abessalom4 ,his mother1 etc444 ,that is1 his grandmother2 unless we suppose1 which is not improbable1 that the ,maacha here named is different from the ,maacha mentioned1 ver4 #b4 #ae3aa4 ,and ,asa did that which was right in the sight of the ,lord1 as did ,david1 his father3 #ae3ab4 ,and he took away the effeminate out of the land1 and removed all the filth of the idols1 which his fathers had made4 #ae3ac4 ,moreover1 he also removed his mother1 ,maacha1 from being the princess in the sacrifices of ,priapus1 and in the grove which she had consecrated to him3 and he destroyed her den1 and broke in pieces the filthy idol1 and burnt it by the torrent ,cedron3 #ae3ad4 ,but the high places he did not take away4 ,nevertheless1 the heart of ,asa was perfect with the ,lord all his days3 ,the high places444 ,there were excelsa or high places of two different kinds4 ,some were set up1 and dedicated to the worship of idols1 or strange gods2 and these ,asa removed1 #b ,par4 #ad4b2 others were only altars of the true ,god1 but were erected contrary to the law1 which allowed of no sacrifices but in the temple2 and these were not removed by ,asa4-,ibid4 ,perfect with the ,lord444 ,asa had his faults2 but never forsook the worship of the ,lord4 #ae3ae4 ,and he brought in the things which his father had dedicated1 and he had vowed1 into the house of the ,lord1 silver and gold1 and vessels4 #ae3af4 ,and there was war between ,asa1 and ,baasa1 king of ,israel1 all their days4 #ae3ag4 ,and ,baasa1 king of ,israel1 went up against ,juda1 and built ,rama1 that no man might go out or come in of the side of ,asa1 king of ,juda4 #ae3ah4 ,then ,asa took all the silver and gold that remained in the treasures of the house of the ,lord1 and in the treasures of the king's house1 and delivered it into the hands of his servants3 and sent them to ,benadad1 son of ,tabremon1 the son of ,hezion1 king of ,syria1 who dwelt in ,damascus1 saying3 #ae3ai4 ,there is a league between me and thee1 and between my father and thy father3 therefore ,i have sent thee presents of silver and gold3 and ,i desire thee to come1 and break thy league with ,baasa1 king of ,israel1 that he may depart from me4 #ae3bj4 ,benadad1 hearkening to king ,asa1 sent the captains of his army against the cities of ,israel1 and they smote ,ahion1 and ,dan1 and ,abeldomum ,maacha1 and all ,cenneroth2 that is all the land of ,nephthali4 #ae3ba4 ,and when ,baasa had heard this1 he left off building ,rama1 and returned into ,thersa4 #ae3bb4 ,but king ,asa sent word into all ,juda1 saying3 ,let no man be excused3 and they took away the stones from ,rama1 and the timber thereof1 wherewith ,baasa had been building1 and with them king ,asa built ,gabaa of ,benjamin1 and ,maspha4 #ae3bc4 ,but the rest of all the acts of ,asa1 and all his strength1 and all that he did1 and the cities that he built1 are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of ,juda8 ,but in the time of his old age he was diseased in his feet4 #ae3bd4 ,and he slept with his fathers1 and was buried with them in the city of ,david1 his father4 ,and ,josaphat1 his son1 reigned in his place4 #ae3be4 ,but ,nadab1 the son of ,jeroboam1 reigned over ,israel the second year of ,asa1 king of ,juda3 and he reigned over ,israel two years4 #ae3bf4 ,and he did evil in the sight of the ,lord1 and walked in the ways of his father1 and in his sins1 wherewith he made ,israel to sin4 #ae3bg4 ,and ,baasa1 the son of ,ahias1 of the house of ,issachar1 conspired against him1 and slew him in ,gebbethon1 which is a city of the ,philistines3 for ,nadab and all ,israel besieged ,gebbethon4 #ae3bh4 ,so ,baasa slew him in the third year of ,asa1 king of ,juda1 and reigned in his place4 #ae3bi4 ,and when he was king1 he cut off all the house of ,jeroboam3 he left not so much as one soul of his seed1 till he had utterly destroyed him1 according to the word of the ,lord1 which he had spoken in the hand of ,ahias1 the ,silonite3 #ae3cj4 ,because of the sin of ,jeroboam1 which he had sinned1 and wherewith he had made ,israel to sin1 and for the offence wherewith he provoked the ,lord1 the ,god of ,israel4 #ae3ca4 ,but the rest of the acts of ,nadab1 and all that he did1 are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of ,israel8 #ae3cb4 ,and there was war between ,asa and ,baasa1 the king of ,israel1 all their days4 #ae3cc4 ,in the third year of ,asa1 king of ,juda1 ,baasa1 the son of ,ahias1 reigned over all ,israel1 in ,thersa1 four and twenty years4 #ae3cd4 ,and he did evil before the ,lord1 and walked in the ways of ,jeroboam1 and in his sins1 wherewith he made ,israel to sin4 #c ,kings ,chapter #af ,jehu prophesieth against ,baasa3 his son ,ela is slain and all his family destroyed by ,zambri4 ,of the reign of ,amri father of ,achab4 #af3a4 ,then the word of the ,lord came to ,jehu1 the son of ,hanani1 against ,baasa1 saying3 #af3b4 ,for as much as ,i have exalted thee out of the dust and made thee prince over my people ,israel1 and thou hast walked in the way of ,jeroboam1 and hast made my people ,israel to sin1 to provoke me to anger with their sins3 #af3c4 ,behold ,i will cut down the posterity of ,baasa1 and the posterity of his house1 and ,i will make thy house as the house of ,jeroboam1 the son of ,nabat4 #af3d4 ,him that dieth of ,baasa1 in the city1 the dogs shall eat3 and him that dieth of his in the country1 the fowls of the air shall devour4 #af3e4 ,but the rest of the acts of ,baasa1 and all that he did1 and his battles1 are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of ,israel8 #af3f4 ,so ,baasa slept with his fathers1 and was buried in ,thersa3 and ,ela1 his son1 reigned in his stead4 #af3g4 ,and when the word of the ,lord came in the hand of ,jehu1 the son of ,hanani1 the prophet1 against ,baasa1 and against his house1 and against all the evil that he had done before the ,lord1 to provoke him to anger by the works of his hands1 to become as the house of ,jeroboam3 for this cause he slew him2 that is to say1 ,jehu1 the son of ,hanani1 the prophet4 #af3h4 ,in the six and twentieth year of ,asa1 king of ,juda1 ,ela1 the son of ,baasa1 reigned over ,israel1 in ,thersa1 two years4 #af3i4 ,and his servant ,zambri1 who was captain of half the horsemen1 rebelled against him3 now ,ela was drinking in ,thersa1 and drunk in the house of ,arsa1 the governor of ,thersa4 #af3aj4 ,and ,zambri rushing in1 struck him1 and slew him1 in the seven and twentieth year of ,asa1 king of ,juda and he reigned in his stead4 #af3aa4 ,and when he was king1 and sat upon his throne1 he slew all the house of ,baasa1 and he left not one thereof to piss against a wall and all his kinsfolks and friends4 #af3ab4 ,and ,zambri destroyed all the house of ,baasa1 according to the word of the ,lord1 that he had spoken to ,baasa1 in the hand of ,jehu1 the prophet1 #af3ac4 ,for all the sins of ,baasa1 and the sins of ,ela1 his son1 who sinned1 and made ,israel to sin1 provoking the ,lord1 the ,god of ,israel1 with their vanities4 #af3ad4 ,but the rest of the acts of ,ela1 and all that he did1 are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of ,israel8 #af3ae4 ,in the seven and twentieth year of ,asa1 king of ,juda1 ,zambri reigned seven days in ,thersa3 now the army was besieging ,gebbethon1 a city of the ,philistines4 #af3af4 ,and when they heard that ,zambri had rebelled1 and slain the king1 all ,israel made ,amri their king1 who was general over ,israel in the camp that day4 #af3ag4 ,and ,amri went up1 and all ,israel with him1 from ,gebbethon1 and they besieged ,thersa4 #af3ah4 ,and ,zambri1 seeing that the city was about to be taken1 went into the palace1 and burnt himself with the king's house3 and he died #af3ai4 ,in his sins1 which he had sinned1 doing evil before the ,lord1 and walking in the way of ,jeroboam1 and in his sin1 wherewith he made ,israel to sin4 #af3bj4 ,but the rest of the acts of ,zambri1 and of his conspiracy and tyranny1 are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of ,israel8 #af3ba4 ,then were the people of ,israel divided into two parts3 one half of the people followed ,thebni1 the son of ,gineth1 to make him king3 and one half followed ,amri4 #af3bb4 ,but the people that were with ,amri1 prevailed over the people that followed ,thebni1 the son of ,gineth3 and ,thebni died1 and ,amri reigned4 #af3bc4 ,in the one and thirtieth year of ,asa1 king of ,juda1 ,amri reigned over ,israel twelve years3 in ,thersa he reigned six years4 ,in the one and thirtieth year1 etc444 ,amri began to reign in the seven and twentieth year of ,asa2 but had not quiet possession of the kingdom till the death of his competitor ,thebni1 which was in the one and thirtieth year of ,asa's reign4 #af3bd4 ,and he bought the hill of ,samaria of ,semer1 for two talents of silver3 and he built upon it1 and he called the city which he built ,samaria1 after the name of ,semer1 the owner of the hill4 #af3be4 ,and ,amri did evil in the sight of the ,lord1 and acted wickedly above all that were before him4 #af3bf4 ,and he walked in all the way of ,jeroboam1 the son of ,nabat1 and in his sins1 wherewith he made ,israel to sin3 to provoke the ,lord1 the ,god of ,israel1 to anger with their vanities4 ,with their vanities444 ,that is1 their idols their golden calves1 vain1 false1 deceitful things4 #af3bg4 ,now the rest of the acts of ,amri1 and the battles he fought1 are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of ,israel8 #af3bh4 ,and ,amri slept with his fathers1 and was buried in ,samaria1 and ,achab1 his son1 reigned in his stead4 #af3bi4 ,now ,achab1 the son of ,amri1 reigned over ,israel in the eight and thirtieth year of ,asa1 king of ,juda4 ,and ,achab1 the son of ,amri1 reigned over ,israel in ,samaria two and twenty years4 #af3cj4 ,and ,achab1 the son of ,amri1 did evil in the sight of the ,lord above all that were before him4 #af3ca4 ,nor was it enough for him to walk in the sins of ,jeroboam1 the son of ,nabat3 but he also took to wife ,jezabel1 daughter of ,ethbaal1 king of the ,sidonians4 ,and he went1 and served ,baal1 and adored him4 #af3cb4 ,and he set up an altar for ,baal1 in the temple of ,baal1 which he had built in ,samaria2 #af3cc4 ,and he planted a grove3 and ,achab did more to provoke the ,lord1 the ,god of ,israel1 than all the kings of ,israel that were before him4 #af3cd4 ,in his days ,hiel1 of ,bethel1 built ,jericho3 in ,abiram1 his firstborn1 he laid its foundations3 and in his youngest son1 ,segub1 he set up the gates thereof3 according to the word of the ,lord1 which he spoke in the hand of ,josue1 the son of ,nun4 #c ,kings ,chapter #ag ,elias shutteth up the heaven from raining4 ,he is fed by ravens1 and afterwards by a widow of ,sarephta4 ,he raiseth the window's son to life4 #ag3a4 ,and ,elias the ,thesbite1 of the inhabitants of ,galaad1 said to ,achab3 ,as the ,lord liveth1 the ,god of ,israel1 in whose sight ,i stand1 there shall not be dew nor rain these years1 but according to the words of my mouth4 #ag3b4 ,and the word of the ,lord came to him1 saying3 #ag3c4 ,get thee hence1 and go towards the east1 and hide thyself by the torrent of ,carith1 which is over against the ,jordan2 #ag3d4 ,and there thou shalt drink of the torrent3 and ,i have commanded the ravens to feed thee there4 #ag3e4 ,so he went1 and did according to the word of the ,lord3 and going1 he dwelt by the torrent ,carith1 which is over against the ,jordan4 #ag3f4 ,and the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning1 and bread and flesh in the evening2 and he drank of the torrent4 #ag3g4 ,but after some time the torrent was dried up3 for it had not rained upon the earth4 #ag3h4 ,then the word of the ,lord came to him1 saying3 #ag3i4 ,arise1 and go to ,sarephta of the ,sidonians1 and dwell there3 for ,i have commanded a widow woman there to feed thee4 ,sarephta of the ,sidonians444 ,that is1 a city of the ,sidonians4 #ag3aj4 ,he arose1 and went to ,sarephta4 ,and when he was come to the gate of the city1 he saw the widow woman gathering sticks1 and he called her1 and said to her3 ,give me a little water in a vessel1 that ,i may drink4 #ag3aa4 ,and when she was going to fetch it1 he called after her1 saying3 ,bring me also1 ,i beseech thee1 a morsel of bread in thy hand4 #ag3ab4 ,and she answered3 ,as the ,lord thy ,god liveth1 ,i have no bread1 but only a handful of meal in a pot1 and a little oil in a cruise3 behold ,i am gathering two sticks1 that ,i may go in and dress it1 for me and my son1 that we may eat it and die4 #ag3ac4 ,and ,elias said to her3 ,fear not2 but go1 and do as thou hast said but first make for me of the same meal a little hearth cake1 and bring it to me1 and after make for thyself and thy son4 #ag3ad4 ,for thus saith the ,lord1 the ,god of ,israel3 ,the pot of meal shall not waste1 nor the cruise of oil be diminished1 until the day wherein the ,lord will give rain upon the face of the earth4 #ag3ae4 ,she went1 and did according to the word of ,elias3 and he ate1 and she1 and her house3 and from that day #ag3af4 ,the pot of meal wasted not1 and the cruise of oil was not diminished according to the word of the ,lord1 which he spoke in the hand of ,elias4 #ag3ag4 ,and it came to pass after this1 that the son of the woman1 the mistress of the house1 fell sick1 and the sickness was very grievous1 so that there was no breath left in him4 #ag3ah4 ,and she said to ,elias3 ,what have ,i to do with thee1 thou man of ,god8 art thou come to me1 that my iniquities should be remembered1 and that thou shouldst kill my son8 #ag3aa4 ,and ,elias said to her3 ,give me thy son4 ,and he took him out of her bosom1 and carried him into the upper chamber where he abode1 and laid him upon his own bed4 #ag3bj4 ,and he cried to the ,lord1 and said3 ,o ,lord1 my ,god1 hast thou afflicted also the widow1 with whom ,i am after a sort maintained1 so as to kill her son8 #ag3ba4 ,and he stretched1 and measured himself upon the child three times1 and cried to the ,lord1 and said3 ,o ,lord1 my ,god1 let the soul of this child1 ,i beseech thee1 return into his body4 #ag3bb4 ,and the ,lord heard the voice of ,elias3 and the soul of the child returned into him1 and he revived4 #ag3bc4 ,and ,elias took the child1 and brought him down from the upper chamber to the house below1 and delivered him to his mother1 and said to her3 ,behold thy son liveth4 #ag3bd4 ,and the woman said to ,elias3 ,now by this ,i know that thou art a man of ,god1 and the word of the ,lord in thy mouth is true4 #c ,kings ,chapter #ah ,elias cometh before ,achab4 ,he convinceth the false prophets by bringing fire from heaven3 he obtaineth rain by his prayer4 #ah3a4 ,after many days1 the word of the ,lord came to ,elias1 in the third year1 saying3 ,go1 and shew thyself to ,achab1 that ,i may give rain upon the face of the earth4 #ah3b4 ,and ,elias went to shew himself to ,achab1 and there was a grievous famine in ,samaria4 #ah3c4 ,and ,achab called ,abdias the governor of his house3 now ,abdias feared the ,lord very much4 #ah3d4 ,for when ,jezabel killed the prophets of the ,lord1 he took a hundred prophets1 and hid them by fifty and fifty in caves1 and fed them with bread and water4 #ah3e4 ,and ,achab said to ,abdias3 ,go into the land unto all fountains of waters1 and into all valleys1 to see if we can find grass1 and save the horses and mules1 that the beasts may not utterly perish4 #ah3f4 ,and they divided the countries between them1 that they might go round about them3 ,achab went one way1 and ,abdias another way by himself4 #ah3g4 ,and as ,abdias was in the way1 ,elias met him3 and he knew him1 and fell on his face1 and said3 ,art thou my lord ,elias8 #ah3h4 ,and he answered3 ,i am4 ,go1 and tell thy master3 ,elias is here4 #ah3i4 ,and he said3 ,what have ,i sinned1 that thou wouldst deliver me1 thy servant1 into the hand of ,achab1 that he should kill me8 #ah3aj4 ,as the ,lord thy ,god liveth1 there is no nation or kingdom1 whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee3 and when all answered3 ,he is not here3 he took an oath of every kingdom and nation1 because thou wast not found4 #ah3aa4 ,and now thou sayest to me3 ,go and tell thy master3 ,elias is here4 #ah3ab4 ,and when ,i am gone from thee1 the ,spirit of the ,lord will carry thee into a place that ,i know not3 and ,i shall go in and tell ,achab2 and he1 not finding thee1 will kill me3 but thy servant feareth the ,lord from his infancy4 #ah3ac4 ,hath it not been told thee1 my lord1 what ,i did when ,jezabel killed the prophets of the ,lord2 how ,i hid a hundred men of the prophets of the ,lord1 by fifty and fifty in caves1 and fed them with bread and water8 #ah3ad4 ,and now thou sayest3 ,go and tell thy master3 ,elias is here3 that he may kill me4 #ah3ae4 ,and ,elias said3 ,as the ,lord of hosts liveth1 before whose face ,i stand1 this day ,i will shew myself unto him4 #ah3af4 ,abdias therefore went to meet ,achab1 and told him3 and ,achab came to meet ,elias4 #ah3ag4 ,and when he had seen him1 he said3 ,art thou he that troublest ,israel8 #ah3ah4 ,and he said3 ,i have not troubled ,israel1 but thou and thy father's house1 who have forsaken the commandments of the ,lord1 and have followed ,baalim4 #ah3ai4 ,nevertheless send now1 and gather unto me all ,israel1 unto ,mount ,carmel1 and the prophets of ,baal four hundred and fifty1 and the prophets of the groves four hundred1 who eat at ,jezabel's table4 #ah3bj4 ,achab sent to all the children of ,israel1 and gathered together the prophets unto mount ,carmel4 #ah3ba4 ,and ,elias coming to all the people1 said3 ,how long do you halt between two sides8 ,if the ,lord be ,god1 follow him3 but if ,baal1 then follow him4 ,and the people did not answer him a word4 #ah3bb4 ,and ,elias said again to the people3 ,i only remain a prophet of the ,lord3 but the prophets of ,baal are four hundred and fifty men4 #ah3bc4 ,let two bullocks be given us1 and let them choose one bullock for themselves1 and cut it in pieces1 and lay it upon wood1 but put no fire under3 and ,i will dress the other bullock1 and lay it on wood1 and put no fire under it4 #ah3bd4 ,call ye on the names of your gods1 and ,i will call on the name of my ,lord3 and the ,god that shall answer by fire1 let him be ,god4 ,and all the people answering1 said3 ,a very good proposal4 #ah3be4 ,then ,elias said to the prophets of ,baal3 ,choose you one bullock and dress it first1 because you are many3 and call on the names of your gods2 but put no fire under4 #ah3bf4 ,and they took the bullock1 which he gave them1 and dressed it3 and they called on the name of ,baal from morning even until noon1 saying3 ,o ,baal1 hear us4 ,but there was no voice1 nor any that answered3 and they leaped over the altar that they had made4 #ah3bg4 ,and when it was now noon1 ,elias jested at them1 saying3 ,cry with a louder voice3 for he is a god2 and perhaps he is talking1 or is in an inn1 or on a journey2 or perhaps he is asleep1 and must be awaked4 #ah3bh4 ,so they cried with a loud voice1 and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets1 till they were all covered with blood4 #ah3bi4 ,and after midday was past1 and while they were prophesying1 the time was come of offering sacrifice1 and there was no voice heard1 nor did any one answer1 nor regard them as they prayed4 #ah3cj4 ,elias said to all the people3 ,come ye unto me4 ,and the people coming near unto him1 he repaired the altar of the ,lord1 that was broken down3 #ah3ca4 ,and he took twelve stones1 according to the number of the tribes of the sons of ,jacob to whom the word of the ,lord came1 saying3 ,israel shall be thy name4 #ah3cb4 ,and he built with the stones an altar to the name of the ,lord3 and he made a trench for water1 of the breadth of two furrows1 round about the altar4 #ah3cc4 ,and he laid the wood in order1 and cut the bullock in pieces1 and laid it upon the wood4 #ah3cd4 ,and he said3 ,fill four buckets with water1 and pour it upon the burnt offering1 and upon the wood4 ,and again he said3 ,do the same the second time4 ,and when they had done it the second time1 he said3 ,do the same also the third time4 ,and they did so the third time4 #ah3ce4 ,and the water run round about the altar1 and the trench was filled with water4 #ah3cf4 ,and when it was now time to offer the holocaust1 ,elias1 the prophet1 came near and said3 ,o ,lord ,god of ,abraham1 and ,isaac1 and ,israel1 shew this day that thou art the ,god of ,israel1 and ,i thy servant1 and that according to thy commandment ,i have done all these things4 #ah3cg4 ,dear me1 ,o ,lord1 hear me3 that this people may learn that thou art the ,lord ,god1 and that thou hast turned their heart again4 #ah3ch4 ,then the fire of the ,lord fell1 and consumed the holocaust1 and the wood1 and the stones1 and the dust1 and licked up the water that was in the trench4 #ah3ci4 ,and when all the people saw this1 they fell on their faces1 and they said3 ,the ,lord1 he is ,god2 the ,lord1 he is ,god4 #ah3dj4 ,and ,elias said to them3 ,take the prophets of ,baal1 and let not one of them escape4 ,and when they had taken them1 ,elias brought them down to the torrent ,cison1 and killed them there4 #ah3da4 ,and ,elias said to ,achab3 ,go up1 eat and drink3 for there is a sound of abundance of rain4 #ah3db4 ,achab went up to eat and drink3 and ,elias went up to the top of ,carmel1 and casting himself down upon the earth1 put his face between his knees1 #ah3dc4 ,and he said to his servant3 ,go up1 and look towards the sea4 ,and he went up1 and looked1 and said3 ,there is nothing4 ,and again he said to him3 ,return seven times4 #ah3dd4 ,and at the seventh time3 ,behold a little cloud arose out of the sea like a man's foot4 ,and he said3 ,go up1 and say to ,achab3 ,prepare thy chariot1 and go down1 lest the rain prevent thee4 #ah3de4 ,and while he turned himself this way and that way1 behold the heavens grew dark1 with clouds and wind1 and there fell a great rain4 ,and ,achab getting up1 went away to ,jezrahel3 #ah3df4 ,and the hand of the ,lord was upon ,elias1 and he girded up his loins1 and ran before ,achab1 till he came to ,jezrahel4 #c ,kings ,chapter #ai ,elias1 fleeing from ,jezabel1 is fed by an angel in the desert2 and by the strength of that food walketh forty days1 till he cometh to ,horeb1 where he hath a vision of ,god4 #ai3a4 ,and ,achab told ,jezabel all that ,elias had done1 and how he had slain all the prophets with the sword4 #ai3b4 ,and ,jezabel sent a messenger to ,elias1 saying3 ,such and such things may the gods do to me1 and add still more1 if by this hour to morrow ,i make not thy life as the life of one of them4 #ai3c4 ,then ,elias was afraid1 and rising up1 he went whithersoever he had a mind3 and he came to ,bersabee of ,juda1 and left his servant there1 #ai3d4 ,and he went forward1 one day's journey into the desert4 ,and when he was there1 and sat under a juniper tree1 he requested for his soul that he might die1 and said3 ,it is enough for me1 ,lord2 take away my soul3 for ,i am no better than my fathers4 ,that he might die444 ,elias requested to die1 not out of impatience or pusillanimity1 but out of zeal against sin2 and that he might no longer be witness of the miseries of his people2 and the war they were waging against ,god and his servants4 ,see ver4 #aj4 #ai3e4 ,and he cast himself down1 and slept in the shadow of the juniper tree3 and behold an angel of the ,lord touched him1 and said to him3 ,arise and eat4 #ai3f4 ,he looked1 and behold there was at his head a hearth cake1 and a vessel of water3 and he ate and drank1 and he fell asleep again4 #ai3g4 ,and the angel of the ,lord came again the second time1 and touched him1 and said to him3 ,arise1 eat3 for thou hast yet a great way to go4 #ai3h4 ,and he arose1 and ate and drank1 and walked in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights1 unto the mount of ,god1 ,horeb4 ,in the strength of that food1 etc444 ,this bread1 with which ,elias was fed in the wilderness1 was a figure of the bread of life which we receive in the blessed sacrament2 by the strength of which we are to be supported in our journey through the wilderness of this world till we come to the true mountain of ,god1 and his vision in a happy eternity4 #ai3i4 ,and when he was come thither1 he abode in a cave and behold the word of the ,lord came unto him1 and he said to him3 ,what dost thou here1 ,elias8 #ai3aj4 ,and he answered3 ,with zeal have ,i been zealous for the ,lord ,god of hosts3 for the children of ,israel have forsaken thy covenant3 they have thrown down thy altars1 they have slain thy prophets with the sword1 and ,i alone am left1 and they seek my life to take it away4 ,i alone am left444 ,viz41 of the prophets in the kingdom of ,israel1 or of the ten tribes2 for in the kingdom of ,juda religion was at that time in a very flourishing condition under the kings ,asa and ,josaphat4 ,and even in ,israel there remained several prophets1 though not then known to ,elias4 ,see chap4 #bj4ac1 #bh1 #ce4 #ai3aa4 ,and he said to him3 ,go forth1 and stand upon the mount before the ,lord3 and behold the ,lord passeth1 and a great and strong wind before the ,lord1 overthrowing the mountains1 and breaking the rocks in pieces3 but the ,lord is not in the wind4 ,and after the wind1 an earthquake3 but the ,lord is not in the earthquake4 #ai3ab4 ,and after the earthquake1 a fire3 but the ,lord is not in the fire4 ,and after the fire1 a whistling of a gentle air4 #ai3ac4 ,and when ,elias heard it1 he covered his face with his mantle1 and coming forth1 stood in the entering in of the cave1 and behold a voice unto him1 saying3 ,what dost thou here1 ,elias8 ,and he answered3 #ai3ad4 ,with zeal have ,i been zealous for the ,lord ,god of hosts3 because the children of ,israel have forsaken thy covenant3 they have destroyed thy altars1 they have slain thy prophets with the sword2 and ,i alone am left1 and they seek my life to take it away4 #ai3ae4 ,and the ,lord said to him3 ,go1 and return on thy way1 through the desert1 to ,damascus3 and when thou art come thither1 thou shalt anoint ,hazael to be king over ,syria2 #ai3af4 ,and thou shalt anoint ,jehu1 the son of ,namsi1 to be king over ,israel3 and ,eliseus1 the son of ,saphat1 of ,abelmeula1 thou shalt anoint to be prophet in thy room4 #ai3ag4 ,and it shall come to pass1 that whosoever shall escape the sword of ,hazael1 shall be slain by ,jehu3 and whosoever shall escape the sword of ,jehu1 shall be slain by ,eliseus4 ,shall be slain by ,eliseus444 ,eliseus did not kill any of the idolaters with the material sword3 but he is here joined with ,hazael and ,jehu1 the great instruments of ,god in punishing the idolatry of ,israel1 because he foretold to the former his exaltation to the kingdom of ,syria1 and the vengeance he would execute against ,israel1 and anointed the latter by one of his disciples to be king of ,israel1 with commission to extirpate the house of ,achab4 #ai3ah4 ,and ,i will leave me seven thousand men in ,israel1 whose knees have not been bowed before ,baal1 and every mouth that hath not worshipped him1 kissing the hands4 #ai3ai4 ,and ,elias departing from thence1 found ,eliseus1 the son of ,saphat1 ploughing with twelve yoke of oxen3 and he was one of them that were ploughing with1 twelve yoke of oxen3 and when ,elias came up to him1 he cast his mantle upon him4 #ai3bj4 ,and he forthwith left the oxen1 and run after ,elias1 and said3 ,let me1 ,i pray thee1 kiss my father and my mother1 and then ,i will follow thee4 ,and he said to him3 ,go1 and return back3 for that which was my part1 ,i have done to thee4 #ai3ba4 ,and returning back from him1 he took a yoke of oxen1 and killed them1 and boiled the flesh with the plough of the oxen1 and gave to the people1 and they ate3 and rising up1 he went away1 and followed ,elias1 and ministered to him4 #c ,kings ,chapter #bj ,the ,syrians besiege ,samaria3 they are twice defeated by ,achab3 who is reprehended by a prophet for letting ,benadad go4 #bj3a4 ,and ,benadad1 king of ,syria1 gathered together all his host1 and there were two and thirty kings with him1 and horses1 and chariots3 and going up1 he fought against ,samaria1 and besieged it4 #bj3b4 ,and sending messengers to ,achab1 king of ,israel1 into the city1 #bj3c4 ,he said3 ,thus saith ,benadad3 ,thy silver and thy gold is mine3 and thy wives and thy goodliest children are mine4 #bj3d4 ,and the king of ,israel answered3 ,according to thy word1 my lord1 ,o king1 ,i am thine1 and all that ,i have4 #bj3e4 ,and the messengers came again1 and said3 ,thus saith ,benadad1 who sent us unto thee3 ,thy silver and thy gold1 and thy wives and thy children1 thou shalt deliver up to me4 #bj3f4 ,to morrow1 therefore1 at this same hour1 ,i will send my servants to thee1 and they shall search thy house1 and the houses of thy servants3 and all that pleaseth them1 they shall put in their hands1 and take away4 #bj3g4 ,and the king of ,israel called all the ancients of the land1 and said3 ,mark1 and see that he layeth snares for us4 ,for he sent to me for my wives1 and for my children1 and for my silver and gold3 and ,i said not nay4 #bj3h4 ,and all the ancients1 and all the people said to him3 ,hearken not to him1 nor consent to him4 #bj3i4 ,wherefore he answered the messengers of ,benadad3 ,tell my lord1 the king3 ,all that thou didst send for to me1 thy servant at first1 ,i will do3 but this thing ,i cannot do4 #bj3aj4 ,and the messengers returning brought him word4 ,and he sent again1 and said3 ,such and such things may the gods do to me1 and more may they add1 if the dust of ,samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people that follow me4 #bj3aa4 ,and the king of ,israel answering1 said3 ,tell him3 ,let not the girded boast himself as the ungirded4 ,let not the girded1 etc444 ,let him not boast before the victory3 it will then be time to glory when he putteth off his armour1 having overcome his adversary4 #bj3ab4 ,and it came to pass1 when ,benadad heard this word1 that he and the kings were drinking in pavilions1 and he said to his servants3 ,beset the city4 ,and they beset it4 #bj3ac4 ,and behold a prophet coming to ,achab1 king of ,israel1 said to him3 ,thus saith the ,lord3 ,hast thou seen all this exceeding great multitude8 behold ,i will deliver them into thy hand this day3 that thou mayst know that ,i am the ,lord4 #bj3ad4 ,and ,achab said3 ,by whom8 ,and he said to him3 ,thus saith the ,lord3 ,by the servants of the princes of the provinces4 ,and he said3 ,who shall begin to fight8 ,and he said3 ,thou4 #bj3ae4 ,so he mustered the servants of the princes of the provinces1 and he found the number of two hundred and thirty-two3 and he mustered after them the people1 all the children of ,israel1 seven thousand3 #bj3af4 ,and they went out at noon4 ,but ,benadad was drinking himself drunk in his pavilion1 and the two and thirty kings with him1 who were come to help him4 #bj3ag4 ,and the servants of the princes of the provinces went out first4 ,and ,benadad sent4 ,and they told him1 saying3 ,there are men come out of ,samaria4 #bj3ah4 ,and he said3 ,whether they come for peace1 take them alive3 or whether they come to fight1 take them alive4 #bj3ai4 ,so the servants of the princes of the provinces went out1 and the rest of the army followed3 #bj3bj4 ,and every one slew the man that came against him3 and the ,syrians fled1 and ,israel pursued after them4 ,and ,benadad1 king of ,syria1 fled away on horseback with his horsemen4 #bj3ba4 ,but the king of ,israel going out overthrew the horses and chariots1 and slew the ,syrians with a great slaughter4 #bj3bb4 7,and a prophet coming to the king of ,israel1 said to him3 ,go1 and strengthen thyself1 and know1 and see what thou dost3 for the next year the king of ,syria will come up against thee47 #bj3bc4 ,but the servants of the king of ,syria said to him3 ,their gods are gods of the hills1 therefore they have overcome us3 but it is better that we should fight against them in the plains1 and we shall overcome them4 #bj3bd4 ,do thou1 therefore1 this thing3 ,remove all the kings from thy army1 and put captains in their stead3 #bj3be4 ,and make up the number of soldiers that have been slain of thine1 and horses1 according to the former horses1 and chariots1 according to the chariots which thou hadst before3 and we will fight against them in the plains1 and thou shalt see that we shall overcome them4 ,he believed their counsel1 and did so4 #bj3bf4 ,wherefore1 at the return of the year1 ,benadad mustered the ,syrians1 and went up to ,aphec1 to fight against ,israel4 #bj3bg4 ,and the children of ,israel were mustered1 and taking victuals1 went out on the other side1 and encamped over against them1 like two little flocks of goats3 but the ,syrians filled the land4 #bj3bh4 7,and a man of ,god coming1 said to the king of ,israel3 ,thus saith the ,lord3 ,because the ,syrians have said3 ,the ,lord is ,god of the hills1 but is not ,god of the valleys3 ,i will deliver all this great multitude into thy hand1 and you shall know that ,i am the ,lord47 #bj3bi4 ,and both sides set their armies in array one against the other seven days1 and on the seventh day the battle was fought3 and the children of ,israel slew1 of the ,syrians1 a hundred thousand footmen in one day4 #bj3cj4 ,and they that remained fled to ,aphec1 into the city3 and the wall fell upon seven and twenty thousand men1 that were left4 ,and ,benadad fleeing1 went into the city1 into a chamber that was within a chamber4 #bj3ca4 ,and his servants said to him3 ,behold1 we have heard that the kings of the house of ,israel are merciful2 so let us put sackcloths on our loins1 and ropes on our heads1 and go out to the king of ,israel3 perhaps he will save our lives4 #bj3cb4 ,so they girded sackcloths on their loins1 and put ropes on their heads1 and came to the king of ,israel1 and said to him3 ,thy servant1 ,benadad1 saith3 ,i beseech thee let me have my life4 ,and he said3 ,if he be yet alive1 he is my brother4 #bj3cc4 ,the men took this for good luck3 and in haste caught the word out of his mouth1 and said3 ,thy brother ,benadad4 ,and he said to them3 ,go1 and bring him to me4 ,then ,benadad came out to him1 and he lifted him up into his chariot4 #bj3cd4 ,and he said to him3 ,the cities which my father took from thy father1 ,i will restore3 and do thou make thee streets in ,damascus1 as my father made in ,samaria and having made a league1 ,i will depart from thee4 ,so he made a league with him1 and let him go4 #bj3ce4 ,then a certain man of the sons of the prophets1 said to his companion1 in the word of the ,lord3 ,strike me4 ,but he would not strike4 #bj3cf4 ,then he said to him3 ,because thou wouldst not hearken to the word of the ,lord1 behold thou shalt depart from me1 and a lion shall slay thee4 ,and when he was gone a little from him1 a lion found him1 and slew him4 #bj3cg4 ,then he found another man1 and said to him3 ,strike me4 ,and he struck him and wounded him4 #bj3ch4 ,so the prophet went1 and met the king in the way1 and disguised himself by sprinkling dust on his face and his eyes4 #bj3ci4 ,and as the king passed by1 he cried to the king1 and said3 ,thy servant went out to fight hand to hand3 and when a certain man was run away1 one brought him to me1 and said3 ,keep this man3 and if he shall slip away1 thy life shall be for his life1 or thou shalt pay a talent of silver4 #bj3dj4 ,and whilst ,i1 in the hurry1 turned this way and that1 on a sudden he was not to be seen4 ,and the king of ,israel said to him3 ,this is thy judgment1 which thyself hast decreed4 #bj3da4 ,but he forthwith wiped off the dust from his face1 and the king of ,israel knew him1 that he was one of the prophets4 #bj3db4 ,and he said to him3 ,thus saith the ,lord4 ,because thou hast let go out of thy hand a man worthy of death1 thy life shall be for his life1 and thy people for his people4 #bj3dc4 ,and the king of ,israel returned to his house1 slighting to hear1 and raging came into ,samaria4 #c ,kings ,chapter #ba ,naboth1 for denying his vineyard to king ,achab1 is by ,jezabel's commandment1 falsely accused and stoned to death4 ,for which crime ,elias denounceth to ,achab the judgments of ,god3 upon his humbling himself the sentence is mitigated4 #ba3a4 ,and after these things1 ,naboth the ,jezrahelite1 who was in ,jezrahel1 had at that time a vineyard1 near the palace of ,achab1 king of ,samaria4 #ba3b4 ,and ,achab spoke to ,naboth1 saying3 ,give me thy vineyard1 that ,i may make me a garden of herbs1 because it is nigh1 and adjoining to my house2 and ,i will give thee for it a better vineyard3 or if thou think it more convenient for thee1 ,i will give thee the worth of it in money4 #ba3c4 ,naboth answered him3 ,the ,lord be merciful to me1 and not let me give thee the inheritance of my fathers4 #ba3d4 ,and ,achab came into his house angry and fretting1 because of the word that ,naboth1 the ,jezrahelite1 had spoken to him1 saying3 ,i will not give thee the inheritance of my fathers4 ,and casting himself upon his bed1 he turned away his face to the wall1 and would eat no bread4 #ba3e4 ,and ,jezabel1 his wife1 went in to him1 and said to him3 ,what is the matter that thy soul is so grieved8 and why eatest thou no bread8 #ba3f4 ,and he answered her3 ,i spoke to ,naboth1 the ,jezrahelite1 and said to him3 ,give me thy vineyard1 and take money for it3 or if it please thee1 ,i will give thee a better vineyard for it4 ,and he said3 ,i will not give thee my vineyard4 #ba3g4 ,then ,jezabel1 his wife1 said to him4 ,thou art of great authority indeed1 and governest well the kingdom of ,israel4 ,arise1 and eat bread1 and be of good cheer2 ,i will give thee the vineyard of ,naboth1 the ,jezrahelite4 #ba3h4 ,so she wrote letters in ,achab's name1 and sealed them with his ring1 and sent them to the ancients1 and the chief men that were in his city1 and that dwelt with ,naboth4 #ba3i4 ,and this was the tenor of the letters3 ,proclaim a fast1 and make ,naboth sit among the chief of the people2 #ba3aj4 ,and suborn two men1 sons of ,belial1 against him and let them bear false witness2 that he hath blasphemed ,god and the king3 and then carry him out1 and stone him1 and so let him die4 #ba3aa4 ,and the men of his city1 the ancients and nobles1 that dwelt with him in the city1 did as ,jezabel had commanded them1 and as it was written in the letters which she had sent to them2 #ba3ab4 ,they proclaimed a fast1 and made ,naboth sit among the chief of the people4 #ba3ac4 ,and bringing two men1 sons of the devil1 they made them sit against him3 and they1 like men of the devil1 bore witness against him before the people3 saying3 ,naboth hath blasphemed ,god and the king4 ,wherefore they brought him forth without the city1 and stoned him to death4 #ba3ad4 ,and they sent to ,jezabel1 saying3 ,naboth is stoned1 and is dead4 #ba3ae4 ,and it came to pass1 when ,jezabel heard that ,naboth was stoned1 and dead1 that she said to ,achab3 ,arise1 and take possession of the vineyard of ,naboth1 the ,jezrahelite1 who would not agree with thee1 and give it thee for money3 for ,naboth is not alive1 but dead4 #ba3af4 ,and when ,achab heard this1 to wit1 that ,naboth was dead1 he arose1 and went down into the vineyard of ,naboth1 the ,jezrahelite1 to take possession of it4 #ba3ag4 ,and the word of the ,lord came to ,elias1 the ,thesbite1 saying3 #ba3ah4 ,arise1 and go down to meet ,achab1 king of ,israel1 who is in ,samaria3 behold he is going down to the vineyard of ,naboth1 to take possession of it3 #ba3ai4 ,and thou shalt speak to him1 saying3 ,thus saith the ,lord3 ,thou hast slain3 moreover also thou hast taken possession4 ,and after these words thou shalt add3 ,thus saith the ,lord3 ,in this place1 wherein the dogs have licked the blood of ,naboth1 they shall lick thy blood also4 #ba3bj4 ,and ,achab said to ,elias3 ,hast thou found me thy enemy8 ,he said3 ,i have found thee because thou art sold1 to do evil in the sight of the ,lord4 ,sold1 to do evil in the sight1 etc444 ,that is1 so addicted to evil1 as if thou hadst sold thyself to the devil1 to be his slave to work all kinds of evil4 #ba3ba4 ,behold ,i will bring evil upon thee1 and ,i will cut down thy posterity1 and ,i will kill of ,achab him that pisseth against the wall1 and him that is shut up1 and the last in ,israel4 #ba3bb4 ,and ,i will make thy house like the house of ,jeroboam the son of ,nabat1 and like the house of ,baasa the son of ,ahias3 for what thou hast done to provoke me to anger1 and for making ,israel to sin4 #ba3bc4 ,and of ,jezabel also1 the ,lord spoke1 saying3 ,the dogs shall eat ,jezabel in the field of ,jezrahel4 #ba3bd4 ,if ,achab die in the city1 the dogs shall eat him3 but if he die in the field1 the birds of the air shall eat him4 #ba3be4 ,now1 there was not such another as ,achab1 who was sold to do evil in the sight of the ,lord3 for his wife1 ,jezabel1 set him on1 #ba3bf4 ,and he became abominable1 insomuch that he followed the idols which the ,amorrhites had made1 whom the ,lord destroyed before the face of the children of ,israel4 #ba3bg4 ,and when ,achab had heard these words1 he rent his garments1 and put haircloth upon his flesh1 and fasted1 and slept in sackcloth1 and walked with his head cast down4 #ba3bh4 ,and the word of the ,lord came to ,elias1 the ,thesbite1 saying3 #ba3bi4 ,hast thou not seen ,achab humbled before me8 therefore1 because he hath humbled himself1 for my sake1 ,i will not bring the evil in his days1 but in his son's days will ,i bring the evil upon his house4 #c ,kings ,chapter #bb ,achab believing his false prophets1 rather than ,micheas1 is slain in ,ramoth ,galaad4 ,ochozias succeedeth him4 ,good king ,josaphat dieth1 and his son ,joram succeedeth him4 #bb3a4 ,and there passed three years without war between ,syria and ,israel4 #bb3b4 ,and in the third year1 ,josaphat1 king of ,juda1 came down to the king of ,israel4 #bb3c4 7,and the king of ,israel said to his servants3 ,know ye not that ,ramoth ,galaad is ours1 and we neglect to take it out of the hand of the king of ,syria87 #bb3d4 ,and he said to ,josaphat3 ,wilt thou come with me to battle to ,ramoth ,galaad8 #bb3e4 ,and ,josaphat said to the king of ,israel3 ,as ,i am1 so art thou3 my people and thy people are one3 and my horsemen are thy horsemen4 ,and ,josaphat said to the king of ,israel3 ,inquire1 ,i beseech thee1 this day the word of the ,lord4 #bb3f4 ,then the king of ,israel assembled the prophets1 about four hundred men1 and he said to them3 ,shall ,i go to ,ramoth ,galaad to fight1 or shall ,i forbear8 ,they answered3 ,go up1 and the ,lord will deliver it into the hand of the king4 #bb3g4 ,and ,josaphat said3 ,is there not here some prophet of the ,lord1 that we may inquire by him8 #bb3h4 ,and the king of ,israel said to ,josaphat4 ,there is one man left1 by whom we may inquire of the ,lord2 ,micheas1 the son of ,jemla3 but ,i hate him1 for he doth not prophecy good to me1 but evil4 ,and ,josaphat said3 ,speak not so1 ,o king4 #bb3i4 ,then the king of ,israel called an eunuch1 and said to him3 ,make haste1 and bring hither ,micheas1 the son of ,jemla4 #bb3aj4 ,and the king of ,israel1 and ,josaphat1 king of ,juda1 sat each on his throne1 clothed with royal robes1 in a court1 by the entrance of the gate of ,samaria1 and all the prophets prophesied before them4 #bb3aa4 ,and ,sedecias1 thc son of ,chanaana1 made himself horns of iron1 and said3 ,thus saith the ,lord3 ,with these shalt thou push ,syria1 till thou destroy it4 #bb3ab4 ,and all the prophets prophesied in like manner1 saying3 ,go up to ,ramoth ,galaad1 and prosper1 for the ,lord will deliver it into the king's hands4 #bb3ac4 ,and the messenger that went to call ,micheas1 spoke to him1 saying3 ,behold the words of the prophets with one mouth declare good things to the king3 let thy word1 therefore1 be like to theirs1 and speak that which is good4 #bb3ad4 ,but ,micheas said to him3 ,as the ,lord liveth1 whatsoever the ,lord shall say to me1 that will ,i speak4 #bb3ae4 ,so he came to the king1 and the king said to him3 ,micheas1 shall we go to ,ramoth ,galaad to battle1 or shall we forbear8 ,he answered him3 ,go up1 and prosper1 and the ,lord shall deliver it into the king's hands4 ,go up1 etc444 ,this was spoken ironically1 and by way of jesting at the flattering speeches of the false prophets3 and so the king understood it1 as appears by his adjuring ,micheas1 in the following verse1 to tell him the truth in the name of the ,lord4 #bb3af4 ,but the king said to him3 ,i adjure thee again and again1 that thou tell me nothing but that which is true1 in the name of the ,lord4 #bb3ag4 ,and he said3 ,i saw all ,israel scattered upon the hills1 like sheep that have no shepherd2 and the ,lord said3 ,these have no master3 let every man of them return to his house in peace4 #bb3ah4 7,then the king of ,israel said to ,josaphat3 ,did ,i not tell thee1 that he prophesieth no good to me1 but always evil87 #bb3ai4 ,and he added and said3 ,hear thou1 therefore1 the word of the ,lord3 ,i saw the ,lord sitting on his throne1 and all the army of heaven standing by him on the right hand and on the left3 #bb3bj4 ,and the ,lord said3 ,who shall deceive ,achab1 king of ,israel1 that he may go up1 and fall at ,ramoth ,galaad8 ,and one spoke words of this manner1 and another otherwise4 ,the ,lord said1 etc444 ,god standeth not in need of any counsellor2 nor are we to suppose that things pass in heaven in the manner here described3 but this representation was made to the prophet1 to be delivered by him in a manner adapted to the common ways and notions of men4 #bb3ba4 ,and there came forth a spirit1 and stood before the ,lord1 and said3 ,i will deceive him4 ,and the ,lord said to him3 ,by what means8 #bb3bb4 ,and he said3 ,i will go forth1 and be a lying spirit1 in the mouth of all his prophets4 ,and the ,lord said3 ,thou shalt deceive him1 and shalt prevail3 go forth1 and do so4 ,go forth1 and do so444 ,this was not a command1 but a permission3 for ,god never ordaineth lies2 though he often permitteth the lying spirit to deceive those who love not the truth4 #b ,thess4 #b4aj4 ,and in this sense it is said in the following verse1 ,the ,lord hath given a lying spirit in the mouth of all thy prophets4 #bb3bc4 ,now1 therefore1 behold the ,lord hath given a lying spirit in the mouth of all thy prophets that are here1 and the ,lord hath spoken evil against thee4 #bb3bd4 ,and ,sedecias1 the son of ,chanaana1 came1 and struck ,micheas on the cheek1 and said3 ,hath then the spirit of the ,lord left me1 and spoken to thee8 #bb3be4 ,and ,micheas said3 ,thou shalt see in the day when thou shalt go into a chamber within a chamber to hide thyself4 ,go into a chamber1 etc444 ,this happened when he heard the king was slain1 and justly apprehended that he should be punished for his false prophecy4 #bb3bf4 ,and the king of ,israel said3 ,take ,micheas and let him abide with ,amon1 the governor of the city1 and with ,joas1 the son of ,amalech2 #bb3bg4 ,and tell them3 ,thus saith the king3 ,put this man in prison1 and feed him with bread of affliction1 and water of distress till ,i return in peace4 #bb3bh4 ,and ,micheas said3 ,if thou return in peace1 the ,lord hath not spoken by me4 ,and he said3 ,hear1 all ye people4 #bb3bi4 ,so the king of ,israel1 and ,josaphat1 king of ,juda1 went up to ,ramoth-,galaad4 #bb3cj4 ,and the king of ,israel said to ,josaphat3 ,take thy armour1 and go into the battle1 and put on thy own garments4 ,but the king of ,israel changed his dress1 and went into the battle4 #bb3ca4 ,and the king of ,syria had commanded the two and thirty captains of the chariots1 saying3 ,you shall not fight against any1 small or great1 but against the king of ,israel only4 #bb3cb4 ,so when the captains of the chariots saw ,josaphat1 they suspected that he was the king of ,israel1 and making a violent assault1 they fought against him3 and ,josaphat cried out4 #bb3cc4 ,and the captains of the chariots perceived that he was not the king of ,israel1 and they turned away from him4 #bb3cd4 ,and a certain man bent his bow1 shooting at a venture1 and chanced to strike the king of ,israel1 between the lungs and the stomach4 ,but he said to the driver of his chariot3 ,turn thy hand1 and carry me out of the army1 for ,i am grievously wounded4 #bb3ce4 ,and the battle was fought that day1 and the king of ,israel stood in his chariot against the ,syrians1 and he died in the evening3 and the blood ran out of the wound into the midst of the chariot4 #bb3cf4 ,and the herald proclaimed through all the army1 before the sun set1 saying3 ,let every man return to his own city1 and to his own country4 #bb3cg4 ,and the king died1 and was carried into ,samaria3 and they buried the king in ,samaria4 #bb3ch4 ,and they washed his chariot in the pool of ,samaria and the dogs licked up his blood1 and they washed the reins according to the word of the ,lord which he had spoken4 #bb3ci4 ,but the rest of the acts of ,achab1 and all that he did1 and the house of ivory that he made1 and all the cities that he built1 are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of ,israel8 #bb3dj4 ,so ,achab slept with his fathers2 and ,ochozias1 his son1 reigned in his stead4 #bb3da4 ,but ,josaphat1 the son of ,asa1 began to reign over ,juda1 in the fourth year of ,acbab1 king of ,israel4 #bb3db4 ,he was five and thirty years old when he began to reign1 and he reigned five and twenty years in ,jerusalem3 the name of his mother was ,azuba1 the daughter of ,salai4 #bb3dc4 ,and he walked in all the way of ,asa1 his father1 and he declined not from it3 and he did that which was right in the sight of the ,lord4 #bb3dd4 ,nevertheless1 he took not away the high places for as yet the people offered sacrifice1 and burnt incense in the high places4 ,he took not away1 etc444 ,he left some of the high places1 viz41 those in which they worshipped the true ,god3 but took away all others1 #b ,par4 #ag4f1 and note ver4 #ad of chap4 #ae4 #c ,kings4 #bb3de4 ,and ,josaphat had peace with the king of ,israel4 #bb3df4 ,but the rest of the acts of ,josaphat1 and his works which he did1 and his battles1 are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of ,juda8 #bb3dg4 ,and the remnant also of the effeminate1 who remained in the days of ,asa1 his father1 he took out of the land4 #bb3dh4 ,and there was then no king appointed in ,edom4 #bb3di4 ,but king ,josaphat made navies on the sea1 to sail into ,ophir for gold3 but they could not go1 for the ships were broken in ,asiongaber4 #bb3ej4 ,then ,ochozias1 the son of ,achab1 said to ,josaphat3 ,let my servants go with thy servants in the ships4 ,and ,josaphat would not4 ,would not444 ,he had been reprehended before for admitting such a partner3 and therefore would have no more to do with him4 #bb3ea4 ,and ,josaphat slept with his fathers1 and was buried with them in the city of ,david1 his father3 and ,joram1 his son1 reigned in his stead4 #bb3eb4 ,and ,ochozias1 the son of ,achab1 began to reign over ,israel1 in ,samaria1 in the seventeenth year of ,josaphat1 king of ,juda1 and he reigned over ,israel two years4 #bb3ec4 ,and he did evil in the sight of the ,lord1 and walked in the way of his father and his mother1 and in the way of ,jeroboam1 the son of ,nabat1 who made ,israel to sin4 #bb3ed4 ,he served also ,baal1 and worshipped him1 and provoked the ,lord1 the ,god of ,israel1 according to all that his father had done4
