reign1 being a history for the space of about forty-six years4 #b ,kings ,chapter #a ,david mourneth for the death of ,saul and ,jonathan3 he ordereth the man to be slain who pretended he had killed ,saul4 #a3a4 ,now it came to pass1 after ,saul was dead1 that ,david returned from the slaughter of the ,amalecites1 and abode two days in ,siceleg4 #a3b4 ,and on the third day1 there appeared a man who came out of ,saul's camp1 with his garments rent1 and dust strewed on his head3 and when he came to ,david1 he fell upon his face1 and adored4 #a3c4 ,and ,david said to him3 ,from whence comest thou8 ,and he said to him3 ,i am fled out of the camp of ,israel4 #a3d4 ,and ,david said unto him3 ,what is the matter that is come to pass8 tell me3 ,he said3 ,the people are fled from the battle1 and many of the people are fallen and dead3 moreover ,saul and ,jonathan his son are slain4 #a3e4 ,and ,david said to the young man that told him3 ,how knowest thou that ,saul and ,jonathan his son1 are dead8 #a3f4 ,and the young man that told him1 said3 ,i came by chance upon mount ,gelboe1 and ,saul leaned upon his spear3 and the chariots and horsemen drew nigh unto him1 #a3g4 ,and looking behind him1 and seeing me1 he called me4 ,and ,i answered1 ,here am ,i4 #a3h4 ,and he said to me3 ,who art thou8 ,and ,i said to him3 ,i am an ,amalecite4 #a3i4 ,and he said to me3 ,stand over me1 and kill me3 for anguish is come upon me1 and as yet my whole life is in me4 #a3aj4 ,so standing over him1 ,i killed him3 for ,i knew that he could not live after the fall3 and ,i took the diadem that was on his head1 and the bracelet that was on his arm1 and have brought them hither to thee1 my lord4 ,i killed him444 ,this story of the young ,amalecite was not true1 as may easily be proved by comparing it with the last chapter of the foregoing book4 #a3aa4 ,then ,david took hold of his garments and rent them1 and likewise all the men that were with him4 #a3ab4 ,and they mourned1 and wept1 and fasted until evening for ,saul1 and for ,jonathan his son1 and for the people of the ,lord1 and for the house of ,israel1 because they were fallen by the sword4 #a3ac4 ,and ,david said to the young man that told him3 ,whence art thou8 ,he answered3 ,i am the son of a stranger of ,amalec4 #a3ad4 ,david said to him3 ,why didst thou not fear to put out thy hand to kill the ,lord's anointed8 #a3ae4 ,and ,david calling one of his servants1 said3 ,go near and fall upon him4 ,and he struck him so that he died4 #a3af4 ,and ,david said to him3 ,thy blood be upon thy own head3 for thy own mouth hath spoken against thee1 saying3 ,i have slain the ,lord's anointed4 #a3ag4 ,and ,david made this kind of lamentation over ,saul1 and over ,jonathan his son4 #a3ah4 7,also he commanded that they should teach the children of ,juda the use of the bow1 as it is written in the book of the just47 ,and he said3 ,consider1 ,o ,israel1 for them that are dead1 wounded on thy high places4 #a3ai4 ,the illustrious of ,israel are slain upon thy mountains3 how are the valiant fallen8 #a3bj4 ,tell it not in ,geth1 publish it not in the streets of ,ascalon3 lest the daughters of the ,philistines rejoice1 lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph4 #a3ba4 ,ye mountains of ,gelboe1 let neither dew1 nor rain come upon you1 neither be they fields of firstfruits3 for there was cast away the shield of the valiant1 the shield of ,saul as though he had not been anointed with oil4 #a3bb4 ,from the blood of the slain1 from the fat of the valiant1 the arrow of ,jonathan never turned back1 and the sword of ,saul did not return empty4 #a3bc4 ,saul and ,jonathan1 lovely1 and comely in their life1 even in death they were not divided3 they were swifter than eagles1 stronger than lions4 #a3bd4 ,ye daughters of ,israel1 weep over ,saul1 who clothed you with scarlet in delights1 who gave ornaments of gold for your attire4 #a3be4 ,how are the valiant fallen in battle8 ,jonathan slain in the high places8 #a3bf4 ,i grieve for thee1 my brother ,jonathan3 exceeding beautiful1 and amiable to me above the love of women4 ,as the mother loveth her only son1 so did ,i love thee4 #a3bg4 ,how are the valiant fallen1 and the weapons of war perished8 #b ,kings ,chapter #b ,david is received and anointed king of ,juda4 ,isboseth the son of ,saul reigneth over the rest of ,israel4 ,a battle between ,abner and ,joab4 #b3a4 ,and after these things ,david consulted the ,lord1 saying3 ,shall ,i go up into one of the cities of ,juda8 ,and the ,lord said to him3 ,go up4 ,and ,david said3 ,whither shall ,i go up8 ,and he answered him3 ,into ,hebron4 #b3b4 ,so ,david went up1 and his two wives ,achinoam the ,jezrahelitess1 and ,abigail the wife of ,nabal of ,carmel3 #b3c4 ,and the men also that were with him1 ,david brought up every man with his household3 and they abode in the towns of ,hebron4 #b3d4 ,and the men of ,juda came1 and anointed ,david there1 to be king over the house of ,juda4 ,and it was told ,david that the men of ,jabes ,galaad had buried ,saul4 #b3e4 ,david therefore sent messengers to the men of ,jabes ,galaad1 and said to them3 ,blessed be you to the ,lord1 who have shewn this mercy to your master ,saul1 and have buried him4 #b3f4 ,and now the ,lord surely will render you mercy and truth1 and ,i also will requite you for this good turn1 because you have done this thing4 #b3g4 ,let your hands be strengthened1 and be ye men of valour3 for although your master ,saul be dead1 yet the house of ,juda hath anointed me to be their king4 #b3h4 ,but ,abner the son of ,ner1 general of ,saul's army1 took ,isboseth the son of ,saul1 and led him about through the camp1 #b3i4 ,and made him king over ,galaad1 and over ,gessuri1 and over ,jezrahel1 and over ,ephraim1 and over ,benjamin1 and over all ,israel4 #b3aj4 ,isboseth the son of ,saul was forty years old when he began to reign over ,israel1 and he reigned two years2 and only the house of ,juda followed ,david4 ,he reigned two years444 ,viz41 before he began visibly to decline3 but in all he reigned seven years and six months2 for so long ,david reigned in ,hebron4 #b3aa4 ,and the number of the days that ,david abode1 reigning in ,hebron over the house of ,juda1 was seven years and six months4 #b3ab4 ,and ,abner the son of ,ner1 and the servants of ,isboseth the son of ,saul1 went out from the camp to ,gabaon4 #b3ac4 ,and ,joab the son of ,sarvia1 and the servants of ,david went out1 and met them by the pool of ,gabaon4 ,and when they were come together1 they sat down over against one another3 the one on the one side of the pool1 and the other on the other side4 #b3ad4 ,and ,abner said to ,joab3 ,let the young men rise1 and play before us4 ,and ,joab answered3 ,let them rise4 #b3ae4 ,then there arose and went over twelve in number of ,benjamin1 of the part of ,isboseth the son of ,saul1 and twelve of the servants of ,david4 #b3af4 ,and every one catching his fellow by the head1 thrust his sword into the side of his adversary1 and they fell down together3 and the name of the place was called3 ,the field of the valiant1 in ,gabaon4 #b3ag4 ,and there was a very fierce battle that day3 and ,abner was put to flight1 with the men of ,israel1 by the servants of ,david4 #b3ah4 ,and there were the three sons of ,sarvia there1 ,joab1 and ,abisai1 and ,asael3 now ,asael was a most swift runner1 like one of the roes that abide in the woods4 #b3ai4 ,and ,asael pursued after ,abner1 and turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following ,abner4 #b3bj4 ,and ,abner looked behind him1 and said3 ,art thou ,asael8 ,and he answered3 ,i am4 #b3ba4 ,and ,abner said to him3 ,go to the right hand or to the left1 and lay hold on one of the young men and take thee his spoils4 ,but ,asael would not leave off following him close4 #b3bb4 ,and again ,abner said to ,asael3 ,go off1 and do not follow me1 lest ,i be obliged to stab thee to the ground1 and ,i shall not be able to hold up my face to ,joab thy brother4 #b3bc4 ,but he refused to hearken to him1 and would not turn aside3 wherefore ,abner struck him with his spear with a back stroke in the groin1 and thrust him through1 and he died upon the spot3 and all that came to the place where ,asael fell down and died stood still4 #b3bd4 ,now while ,joab and ,abisai pursued after ,abner1 the sun went down3 and they came as far as the hill of the aqueduct1 that lieth over against the valley by the way of the wilderness in ,gabaon4 #b3be4 ,and the children of ,benjamin gathered themselves together to ,abner3 and being joined in one body1 they stood on the top of a hill4 #b3bf4 ,and ,abner cried out to ,joab1 and said3 ,shall thy sword rage unto utter destruction8 knowest thou not that it is dangerous to drive people to despair8 how long dost thou defer to bid the people cease from pursuing after their brethren8 #b3bg4 ,and ,joab said3 ,as the ,lord liveth1 if thou hadst spoke sooner1 even in the morning the people should have retired from pursuing after their brethren4 #b3bh4 ,then ,joab sounded the trumpet1 and all the army stood still1 and did not pursue after ,israel any farther1 nor fight any more4 #b3bi4 ,and ,abner and his men walked all that night through the plains3 and they passed the ,jordan1 and having gone through all ,beth-horon1 came to the camp4 #b3cj4 ,and ,joab returning1 after he had left ,abner1 assembled all the people3 and there were wanting of ,david's servants nineteen men1 beside ,asael4 #b3ca4 ,but the servants of ,david had killed of ,benjamin1 and of the men that were with ,abner1 three hundred and sixty1 who all died4 #b3cb4 ,and they took ,asael1 and buried him in the sepulchre of his father in ,bethlehem and ,joab1 and the men that were with him1 marched all the night1 and they came to ,hebron at break of day4 #b ,kings ,chapter #c ,david groweth daily stronger4 ,abner cometh over to him3 he is treacherously slain by ,joab4 #c3a4 ,now there was a long war between the house of ,saul and the house of ,david3 ,david prospering and growing always stronger and stronger1 but the house of ,saul decaying daily4 ,there was a long war between the house of ,saul1 etc444 ,rather a strife or emulation than a war with arms2 it lasted five years and a half4 #c3b4 ,and sons were born to ,david in ,hebron3 and his firstborn was ,ammon of ,achinoam the ,jezrahelitess3 #c3c4 ,and his second ,cheleab of ,abigail the wife of ,nabal of ,carmel3 and the third ,absalom the son of ,maacha the daughter of ,tholmai king of ,gessur3 #c3d4 ,and the fourth ,adonias1 the son of ,haggith3 and the fifth ,saphathia the son of ,abital3 #c3e4 ,and the sixth ,jethraam of ,egla the wife of ,david3 these were born to ,david ,in ,hebron4 #c3f4 ,now while there was war between the house of ,saul and the house of ,david1 ,abner the son of ,ner ruled the house of ,saul4 #c3g4 ,and ,saul had a concubine named ,respha1 the daughter of ,aia4 ,and ,isboseth said to ,abner3 #c3h4 ,why didst thou go in to my father's concubine8 ,and he was exceedingly angry for the words of ,isboseth1 and said3 ,am ,i a dog's head against ,juda this day1 who have shewn mercy to the house of ,saul thy father1 and to his brethren and friends1 and have not delivered thee into the hands of ,david1 and hast thou sought this day against me to charge me with a matter concerning a woman8 #c3i4 ,so do ,god to ,abner1 and more also1 unless as the ,lord hath sworn to ,david1 so ,i do to him1 #c3aj4 ,that the kingdom be translated from the house of ,saul1 and the throne of ,david be set up over ,israel1 and over ,juda from ,dan to ,bersabee4 #c3aa4 ,and he could not answer him a word1 because he feared him4 #c3ab4 ,abner therefore sent messengers to ,david for himself1 saying3 ,whose is the land8 and that they should say3 ,make a league with me1 and my hand shall be with thee3 and ,i will bring all ,israel to thee4 #c3ac4 ,and he said3 ,very well3 ,i will make a league with thee3 but one thing ,i require of thee1 saying3 ,thou shalt not see my face before thou bring ,michol the daughter of ,saul3 and so thou shalt come1 and see me4 #c3ad4 ,and ,david sent messengers to ,isboseth the son of ,saul1 saying3 ,restore my wife ,michol1 whom ,i espoused to me for a hundred foreskins of the ,philistines4 #c3ae4 ,and ,isboseth sent1 and took her from her husband ,phaltiel1 the son of ,lais4 #c3af4 ,and her husband followed her1 weeping as far as ,bahurim3 and ,abner said to him3 ,go and return4 ,and he returned4 #c3ag4 ,abner also spoke to the ancients of ,israel1 saying3 ,both yesterday and the day before you sought for ,david that he might reign over you4 #c3ah4 ,now then do it3 because the ,lord hath spoken to ,david1 saying3 ,by the hand of my servant ,david ,i will save my people ,israel from the hands of the ,philistines1 and of all their enemies4 #c3ai4 ,and ,abner spoke also to ,benjamin4 ,and he went to speak to ,david in ,hebron all that seemed good to ,israel1 and to all ,benjamin4 #c3bj4 ,and he came to ,david in ,hebron with twenty men3 and ,david made a feast for ,abner1 and his men that came with him4 #c3ba4 ,and ,abner said to ,david3 ,i will rise1 that ,i may gather all ,israel unto thee my lord the king1 and may enter into a league with thee1 and that thou mayst reign over all as thy soul desireth4 ,now when ,david had brought ,abner on his way1 and he was gone in peace1 #c3bb4 ,immediately1 ,david's servants and ,joab came1 after having slain the robbers1 with an exceeding great booty4 ,and ,abner was not with ,david in ,hebron1 for he had now sent him away1 and he was gone in peace4 #c3bc4 ,and ,joab and all the army that was with him1 came afterwards3 and it was told ,joab1 that ,abner the son of ,ner came to the king1 and he hath sent him away1 and he is gone in peace4 #c3bd4 ,and ,joab went in to the king1 and said3 ,what hast thou done8 ,behold ,abner came to thee3 ,why didst thou send him away1 and he is gone and departed8 #c3be4 ,knowest thou not ,abner the son of ,ner1 that to this end he came to thee1 that he might deceive thee1 and to know thy going out1 and thy coming in1 and to know all thou dost8 #c3bf4 ,then ,joab going out from ,david1 sent messengers after ,abner1 and brought him back from the cistern of ,sira1 ,david knowing nothing of it4 #c3bg4 ,and when ,abner was returned to ,hebron1 ,joab took him aside to the middle of the gate1 to speak to him treacherously3 and he stabbed him there in the groin1 and he died1 in revenge of the blood of ,asael his brother4 #c3bh4 ,and when ,david heard of it1 after the thing was now done1 he said3 ,i1 and my kingdom are innocent before the ,lord for ever of the blood of ,abner the son of ,ner3 #c3bi4 ,and may it come upon the head of ,joab1 and upon all his father's house3 and let there not fail from the house of ,joab one that hath an issue of seed1 or that is a leper1 or that holdeth the distaff1 or that falleth by the sword1 or that wanteth bread4 #c3cj4 ,so ,joab and ,abisai his brother slew ,abner1 because he had killed their brother ,asael at ,gabaon in the battle4 #c3ca4 ,and ,david said to ,joab1 and to all the people that were with him3 ,rend your garments1 and gird yourselves with sackcloths1 and mourn before the funeral of ,abner4 ,and king ,david himself followed the bier4 #c3cb4 ,and when they had buried ,abner in ,hebron1 king ,david lifted up his voice1 and wept at the grave of ,abner3 and all the people also wept4 #c3cc4 ,and the king mourning and lamenting over ,abner1 said3 ,not as cowards are wont to die1 hath ,abner died4 #c3cd4 ,thy hands were not bound1 nor thy feet laden with fetters3 but as men fall before the children of iniquity1 so didst thou fall4 ,and all the people repeating it wept over him4 #c3ce4 ,and when all the people came to take meat with ,david1 while it was yet broad day1 ,david swore1 saying3 ,so do ,god to me1 and more also1 if ,i taste bread or any thing else before sunset4 #c3cf4 ,and all the people heard1 and they were pleased1 and all that the king did seemed good in the sight of all the people4 #c3cg4 ,and all the people1 and all ,israel understood that day that it was not the king's doing1 that ,abner the son of ,ner was slain4 #c3ch4 ,the king also said to his servants3 ,do you not know that a prince and a great man is slain this day in ,israel8 #c3ci4 ,but ,i as yet am tender1 though anointed king4 ,and these men the sons of ,sarvia are too hard for me3 the ,lord reward him that doth evil according to his wickedness4 #b ,kings ,chapter #d ,isboseth is murdered by two of his servants4 ,david punisheth the murderers4 #d3a4 ,and ,isboseth the son of ,saul heard that ,abner was slain in ,hebron3 and his hands were weakened1 and all ,israel was troubled4 #d3b4 ,now the son of ,saul had two men captains of his bands1 the name of the one was ,baana1 and the name of the other ,rechab1 the sons of ,remmon a ,berothite of the children of ,benjamin3 for ,beroth also was reckoned in ,benjamin4 #d3c4 ,and the ,berothites fled into ,gethaim1 and were sojourners there until that time4 #d3d4 ,and ,jonathan the son of ,saul had a son that was lame of his feet3 for he was five years old when the tidings came of ,saul and ,jonathan from ,jezrahel4 ,and his nurse took him up and fled3 and as she made haste to flee1 he fell and became lame3 and his name was ,miphiboseth4 #d3e4 ,and the sons of ,remmon the ,berothite1 ,rechab and ,baana coming1 went into the house of ,isboseth in the heat of the day3 and he was sleeping upon his bed at noon4 ,and the doorkeeper of the house1 who was cleansing wheat1 was fallen asleep4 #d3f4 ,and they entered into the house secretly taking ears of corn1 and ,rechab and ,baana his brother stabbed him in the groin1 and fled away4 #d3g4 ,for when they came into the house1 he was sleeping upon his bed in a parlour1 and they struck him and killed him and taking away his head they went off by the way of the wilderness1 walking all night4 #d3h4 ,and they brought the head of ,isboseth to ,david to ,hebron3 and they said to the king3 ,behold the head of ,isboseth the son of ,saul thy enemy who sought thy life3 and the ,lord hath revenged my lord the king this day of ,saul1 and of his seed4 #d3i4 ,but ,david answered ,rechab1 and ,baana his brother1 the sons of ,remmon the ,berothite1 and said to them3 ,as the ,lord liveth1 who hath delivered my soul out of all distress1 #d3aj4 ,the man that told me1 and said3 ,saul is dead1 who thought he brought good tidings1 ,i apprehended1 and slew him in ,siceleg1 who should have been rewarded for his news4 #d3aa4 ,how much more now when wicked men have slain an innocent man in his own house1 upon his bed1 shall ,i not require his blood at your hand1 and take you away from the earth8 #d3ab4 ,and ,david commanded his servants and they slew them3 and cutting off their hands and feet1 hanged them up over the pool in ,hebron3 but the head of ,isboseth they took and buried in the sepulchre of ,abner in ,hebron4 #b ,kings ,chapter #e ,david is anointed king of all ,israel4 ,he taketh ,jerusalem1 and dwelleth there4 ,he defeateth the ,philistines4 #e3a4 ,then all the tribes of ,israel came to ,david in ,hebron1 saying3 ,behold we are thy bone and thy flesh4 #e3b4 ,moreover yesterday also and the day before1 when ,saul was king over us1 thou wast he that did lead out and bring in ,israel3 and the ,lord said to thee3 ,thou shalt feed my people ,israel1 and thou shalt be prince over ,israel4 #e3c4 ,the ancients also of ,israel came to the king of ,hebron1 and king ,david made a league with them in ,hebron before the ,lord3 and they anointed ,david to be king over ,israel4 #e3d4 ,david was thirty years old when he began to reign1 and he reigned forty years4 #e3e4 ,in ,hebron he reigned over ,juda seven years and six months3 and in ,jerusalem he reigned three and thirty years over all ,israel and ,juda4 #e3f4 ,and the king and all the men that were with him went to ,jerusalem to the ,jebusites the inhabitants of the land3 and they said to ,david3 ,thou shalt not come in hither unless thou take away the blind and the lame that say3 ,david shall not come in hither4 #e3g4 ,but ,david took the castle of ,sion1 the same is the city of ,david4 #e3h4 ,for ,david had offered that day a reward to whosoever should strike the ,jebusites and get up to the gutters of the tops of the houses1 and take away the blind and the lame that hated the soul of ,david3 therefore it is said in the proverb3 ,the blind and the lame shall not come into the temple4 #e3i4 ,and ,david dwelt in the castle1 and called it1 ,the city of ,david3 and built round about from ,mello and inwards4 #e3aj4 ,and he went on prospering and growing up1 and the ,lord ,god of hosts was with him4 #e3aa4 ,and ,hiram the king of ,tyre sent messengers to ,david1 and cedar trees1 and carpenters1 and masons for walls3 and they built a house for ,david4 #e3ab4 ,and ,david knew that the ,lord had confirmed him king over ,israel1 and that he had exalted his kingdom over his people ,israel4 #e3ac4 ,and ,david took more concubines and wives of ,jerusalem1 after he was come from ,hebron3 and there were born to ,david other sons also and daughters3 ,david took more concubines and wives of ,jerusalem444 ,not harlots1 but wives of an inferior condition2 for such1 in scripture1 are styled concubines4 #e3ad4 ,and these are the names of them1 that were born to him in ,jerusalem1 ,samua1 and ,sobab1 and ,nathan1 and ,solomon1 #e3ae4 ,and ,jebahar1 and ,elisua1 and ,nepheg1 #e3af4 ,and ,japhia1 and ,elisama1 and ,elioda1 and ,eliphaleth4 #e3ag4 ,and the ,philistines heard that they had anointed ,david to be king over ,israel3 and they all came to seek ,david3 and when ,david heard of it1 he went down to a strong hold4 #e3ah4 ,and the ,philistines coming spread themselves in the valley of ,raphaim4 #e3ai4 ,and ,david consulted the ,lord1 ,saying3 ,shall ,i go up to the ,philistines8 and wilt thou deliver them into my hand8 ,and the ,lord said to ,david3 ,go up1 for ,i will surely deliver the ,philistines into thy hand4 #e3bj4 ,and ,david came to ,baal ,pharisim3 and defeated them there1 and he said1 ,the ,lord hath divided my enemies before me1 as waters are divided4 ,therefore the name of the place was called ,baal ,pharisim4 #e3ba4 ,and they left there their idols3 which ,david and his men took away4 #e3bb4 ,and the ,philistines came up again and spread themselves into the valley of ,raphaim4 #e3bc4 ,and ,david consulted the ,lord3 ,shall ,i go up against the ,philistines1 and wilt thou deliver them into my hands8 ,he answered3 ,go not up against them but fetch a compass behind them1 and thou shalt come upon them over against the pear trees4 #e3bd4 ,and when thou shalt hear the sound of one going in the tops of the pear trees1 then shalt thou join battle3 for then will the ,lord go out before thy face to strike the army of the ,philistines4 #e3be4 ,and ,david did as the ,lord had commanded him1 and he smote the ,philistines from ,gabaa until thou come to ,gezer4 #b ,kings ,chapter #f ,david fetcheth the ark from ,cariathiarim4 ,oza is struck dead for touching it4 ,it is deposited in the house of ,obededom3 and from thence carried to ,david's house4 #f3a4 ,and ,david again gathered together all the chosen men of ,israel1 thirty thousand4 #f3b4 ,and ,david arose and went1 with all the people that were with him of the men of ,juda to fetch the ark of ,god1 upon which the name of the ,lord of ,hosts is invoked1 who sitteth over it upon the cherubims4 #f3c4 ,and they laid the ark of ,god upon a new cart3 and took it out of the house of ,abinadab1 who was in ,gabaa1 and ,oza and ,ahio1 the sons of ,abinadab1 drove the new cart4 ,gabaa444 ,the hill of ,cariathiarim1 where the ark had been in the house of ,abinadab1 from the time of its being restored back by the ,philistines4 #f3d4 ,and when they had taken it out of the house of ,abinadab1 who was in ,gabaa1 ,ahio having care of the ark of ,god went before the ark4 #f3e4 ,but ,david and all ,israel played before the ,lord on all manner of instruments made of wood1 on harps and lutes and timbrels and cornets and cymbals4 #f3f4 ,and when they came to the floor of ,nachon1 ,oza put forth his hand to the ark of ,god1 and took hold of it3 because the oxen kicked and made it lean aside4 #f3g4 ,and the indignation of the ,lord was enkindled against ,oza1 and he struck him for his rashness3 and he died there before the ark of ,god4 #f3h4 ,and ,david was grieved because the ,lord had struck ,oza1 and the name of that place was called3 ,the striking of ,oza1 to this day4 #f3i4 ,and ,david was afraid of the ,lord that day1 saying3 ,how shall the ark of the ,lord come to me8 #f3aj4 ,and he would not have the ark of the ,lord brought in to himself into the city of ,david3 but he caused it to be carried into the house of ,obededom the ,gethite4 #f3aa4 ,and the ark of the ,lord abode in the house of ,obededom the ,gethite three months3 and the ,lord blessed ,obededom1 and all his household4 #f3ab4 ,and it was told king ,david1 that the ,lord had blessed ,obededom1 and all that he had1 because of the ark of ,god4 ,so ,david went1 and brought away the ark of ,god out of the house of ,obededom into the city of ,david with joy4 ,and there were with ,david seven choirs1 and calves for victims4 ,choirs444 ,or companies of musicians4 #f3ac4 ,and when they that carried the ark of the ,lord had gone six paces1 he sacrificed and ox and a ram3 #f3ad4 ,and ,david danced with all his might before the ,lord3 and ,david was girded with a linen ephod4 #f3ae4 ,and ,david and all the louse of ,israel brought the ark of the covenant of the ,lord with joyful shouting1 and with sound of trumpet4 #f3af4 ,and when the ark of the ,lord was come into the city of ,david1 ,michol the daughter of ,saul1 looking out through a window1 saw king ,david leaping and dancing before the ,lord3 and she despised him in her heart4 #f3ag4 ,and they brought the ark of the ,lord1 and set it in its place in the midst of the tabernacle1 which ,david had pitched for it3 and ,david offered holocausts1 and peace offerings before the ,lord4 #f3ah4 ,and when he had made an end of offering holocausts and peace offerings1 he blessed the people in the name of the ,lord of hosts4 #f3ai4 ,and he distributed to all the multitude of ,israel1 both men and women1 to every one1 a cake of bread1 and a piece of roasted beef1 and fine flour fried with oil3 and all the people departed every one to his own house4 #f3bj4 ,and ,david returned to bless his own house3 and ,michol the daughter of ,saul coming out to meet ,david1 said3 ,how glorious was the king of ,israel to day1 uncovering himself before the handmaids of his servants1 and was naked1 as if one of the buffoons should be naked4 #f3ba4 ,and ,david said to ,michol3 ,before the ,lord1 who chose me rather than thy father1 and than all his house1 and commanded me to be ruler over the people of the ,lord in ,israel1 #f3bb4 ,i will both play and make myself meaner than ,i have done3 and ,i will be little in my own eyes3 and with the handmaids of whom thou speakest1 ,i shall appear more glorious4 #f3bc4 ,therefore ,michol the daughter of ,saul had no child to the day of her death4 #b ,kings ,chapter #g ,david's purpose to build a temple is rewarded with the promise of great blessings in his seed3 his prayer and thanksgiving4 #g3a4 ,and it came to pass when the king sat in his house1 and the ,lord had given him rest on every side from all his enemies1 #g3b4 ,he said to ,nathan the prophet3 ,dost thou see that ,i dwell in a house of cedar1 and the ark of ,god is lodged within skins8 #g3c4 ,and ,nathan said to the king3 ,go1 do all that is in they heart3 because the ,lord is with thee4 #g3d4 ,but it came to pass that night1 that the word of the ,lord came to ,nathan1 saying3 #g3e4 ,go1 and say to my servant ,david3 ,thus saith the ,lord3 ,shalt thou build me a house to dwell in8 #g3f4 ,whereas ,i have not dwelt in a house from the day that ,i brought the children of ,israel out of the land of ,egypt even to this day3 but have walked in a tabernacle1 and in a tent4 #g3g4 ,in all the places that ,i have gone through with all the children of ,israel1 did ever ,i speak a word to any one of the tribes of ,israel1 whom ,i commanded to feed my people ,israel1 saying3 ,why have you not built me a house of cedar8 #g3h4 ,and now thus shalt thou speak to my servant ,david3 ,thus saith the ,lord of hosts3 ,i took thee out of the pastures from following the sheep to be ruler over my people ,israel3 #g3i4 ,and ,i have been with thee wheresoever thou hast walked1 and have slain all thy enemies from before thy face3 and ,i have made thee a great man1 like unto the name of the great ones that are on the earth4 #g3aj4 ,and ,i will appoint a place for my people ,israel1 and ,i will plant them1 and they shall dwell therein1 and shall be disturbed no more3 neither shall the children of iniquity afflict them any more as they did before1 #g3aa4 ,from the day that ,i appointed judges over my people ,israel3 and ,i will give thee rest from all thy enemies4 ,and the ,lord foretelleth to thee1 that the ,lord will make thee a house4 #g3ab4 ,and when thy days shall be fulfilled1 and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers1 ,i will raise up thy seed after thee1 which shall proceed out of the bowels1 and ,i will establish his kingdom4 ,i will establish his kingdom444 ,this prophecy partly relateth to ,solomon3 but much more to ,christ1 who is called the son of ,david in scripture1 and who is the builder of the true temple1 which is the church1 his everlasting kingdom1 which shall never fail4 #g3ac4 ,he shall build a house to my name1 and ,i will establish the throne of his kingdom fore ever4 #g3ad4 ,i will be to him a father1 and he shall be to me a son3 and if he commit any iniquity1 ,i will correct him with the rod of men1 and with the stripes of the children of men4 #g3ae4 ,but my mercy ,i will not take away from him1 as ,i took it from ,saul1 whom ,i removed from before my face4 #g3af4 ,and thy house shall be faithful1 and thy kingdom for ever before thy face1 and thy throne shall be firm for ever4 #g3ag4 ,according to all these words and according to all this vision so did ,nathan speak to ,david4 #g3ah4 ,and ,david went in1 and sat before the ,lord1 and said3 ,who am ,i1 ,o ,lord ,god1 and what is my house1 that thou hast brought me thus far8 #g3ai4 ,bur yet this hath seemed little in thy sight1 ,o ,lord ,god1 unless thou didst also speak of the house of thy servant for a long time to come3 for this is the law of ,adam1 ,o ,lord ,god3 #g3bj4 ,and what can ,david say more unto thee8 for thou knowest thy servant1 ,o ,lord ,god3 #g3ba4 ,for thy word's sake1 and according to thy own heart thou has done all these great things1 so that thou wouldst make it known to thy servant4 #g3bb4 ,therefore thou art magnified1 ,o ,lord ,god1 because there is none like to thee1 neither is there any ,god besides thee1 in all the things that we have heard with our ears4 #g3bc4 ,and what nation is there upon earth1 as thy people ,israel1 whom ,god went to redeem for a people to himself1 and to make him a name1 and to do for them great and terrible things1 upon the earth1 before the face of thy people1 whom thou redeemedst to thyself out of ,egypt1 from the nations and their gods4 #g3bd4 ,for thou hast confirmed to thyself thy people ,israel to be an everlasting people3 and thou1 ,o ,lord ,god1 art become their ,god4 #g3be4 ,and now1 ,o ,lord ,god1 raise up for ever the word that thou hast spoken1 concerning thy servant and concerning his house3 and do as thou hast spoken1 #g3bf4 ,that thy name may be magnified for ever1 and it may be said3 ,the ,lord of hosts is ,god over ,israel4 ,and the house of thy servant ,david shall be established before the ,lord4 #g3bg4 ,because thou1 ,o ,lord of hosts1 ,god of ,israel1 hast revealed to the ear of thy servant1 saying3 ,i will build thee a house3 therefore hath thy servant found in his heart to pray this prayer to thee4 #g3bh4 ,and now1 ,o ,lord ,god1 thou art ,god1 and thy words shall be true3 for thou hast spoken to thy servant these good things4 #g3bi4 ,and now begin1 and bless the house of thy servant1 that it may endure for ever before thee3 because thou1 ,o ,lord ,god1 hast spoken it1 and with thy blessing let the house of thy servant be blessed for ever4 #b ,kings ,chapter #h ,david's victories1 and his chief officers4 #h3a4 ,and it came to pass after this that ,david defeated the ,philistines1 and brought them down1 and ,david took the bridle of tribute out of the hand of the ,philistines1 #h3b4 ,and he defeated ,moab1 and measured them with a line1 casting them down to the earth3 and he measured with two lines1 one to put to death1 and one to save alive3 and ,moab was made to serve ,david under tribute4 #h3c4 ,david defeated also ,adarezer the son of ,rohob king of ,soba1 when he went to extend his dominion over the river ,euphrates4 #h3d4 ,and ,david took from him a thousand and seven hundred horsemen1 and twenty thousand footmen1 and houghed all the chariot horses3 and only reserved of them for one hundred chariots4 #h3e4 ,and the ,syrians of ,damascus came to succour ,adarezer the king of ,soba3 and ,david slew of the ,syrians two and twenty thousand men4 #h3f4 ,and ,david put garrisons in ,syria of ,damascus3 and ,syria served ,david under tribute1 and the ,lord preserved ,david in all his enterprises1 whithersoever he went4 #h3g4 ,and ,david took the arms of gold1 which the servants of ,adarezer wore and brought them to ,jerusalem4 #h3h4 ,and out of ,bete1 and out of ,beroth1 cities of ,adarezer1 king ,david took and exceeding great quantity of brass4 #h3i4 ,and ,thou the king of ,emath heard that ,david had defeated all the forces of ,adarezer4 #h3aj4 ,and ,thou sent ,joram his son to king ,david1 to salute him1 and to congratulate with him1 and to return him thanks3 because he had fought against ,adarezer1 and had defeated him4 ,for ,thou was an enemy to ,adarezer1 and in his hand were vessels of gold1 and vessels of silver1 and vessels of brass3 #h3aa4 ,and king ,david dedicated them to the ,lord1 together with the silver and gold that he had dedicated of all the nations1 which he had subdued3 #h3ab4 ,of ,syria1 and of ,moab1 and of the children ,ammon1 and of the ,philistines1 and of ,amalec1 and of the spoils of ,adarezer the son of ,rohob king of ,soba4 #h3ac4 ,david also made himself a name1 when he returned after taking ,syria in the valley of the saltpits1 killing eighteen thousand3 #h3ad4 ,and he put guards in ,edom1 and placed there a garrison3 and all ,edom was made to serve ,david3 and the ,lord preserved ,david in all enterprises he went about4 #h3ae4 ,and ,david reigned over all ,israel3 and ,david did judgment and justice to all his people4 #h3af4 ,and ,joab the son ,sarvia was over the army3 and ,josaphat the son of ,ahilud was recorder3 ,recorder444 ,or chancellor4 #h3ag4 ,and ,sadoc the son of ,achitob1 and ,achimelech the son of ,abiathar1 were the priests3 and ,saraias was the scribe3 ,scribe444 ,or secretary4 #h3ah4 ,and ,banaias the son of ,joiada was over the ,cerethi and ,phelethi3 and the sons of ,david were the princes4 ,the ,cerethi and ,phelethi444 ,the king's guards4-,ibid4 ,princes444 ,literally priests4 7,cohen7 ,so called1 by a title of honour1 and not from exercising the priestly functions4 #b ,kings ,chapter #i ,david's kindness to ,miphiboseth for the sake of his father ,jonathan4 #i3a4 ,and ,david said3 ,is there any one1 think you1 left of the house of ,saul1 that ,i may shew kindness to him for ,jonathan's sake8 #i3b4 ,now there was of the house of ,saul1 a servant named ,siba3 and when the king had called him to him1 he said to him3 ,art thou ,siba8 ,and he answered3 ,i am ,siba thy servant4 #i3c4 ,and the king said3 ,is there any one left of the house of ,saul1 that ,i may shew the mercy of ,god unto ,him8 ,and ,siba said to the king3 ,there is a son of ,jonathan left1 who is lame of his feet4 #i3d4 ,where is he8 said he4 ,and ,siba said to the king3 ,behold he is in the house of ,machir the son of ,ammiel in ,lodabar4 #i3e4 ,then ,king ,david sent1 and brought him out of the house of ,machir the son of ,ammiel of ,lodabar4 #i3f4 ,and when ,miphiboseth the son of ,jonathan the son of ,saul was come to ,david1 he fell on his face and worshipped4 ,and ,david said3 ,miphiboseth8 ,and he answered3 ,behold thy servant4 #i3g4 ,and ,david said to him3 ,fear not1 for ,i will surely shew thee mercy for ,jonathan thy father's sake1 and ,i will restore the lands of ,saul the father1 and thou shalt eat bread at my table always4 #i3h4 ,he bowed down to him1 and said3 ,who am ,i thy servant1 that thou shouldst look upon such a dead dog as ,i am8 #i3i4 ,then the ,king called ,siba the servant of ,saul1 and said to him3 ,all that belonged to ,saul1 and all his house1 ,i have given to thy master's son4 #i3aj4 ,thou therefore and the sons and thy servants shall till the land for him3 and thou shalt bring in food for thy master's son1 that he may be maintained3 and ,miphiboseth the son of thy master shall always eat bread at my table4 ,and ,siba had fifteen sons and twenty servants4 #i3aa4 ,and ,siba said to the king3 ,as thou my lord the hast commanded thy servant1 so will thy servant do3 and ,miphiboseth shall eat at my table1 as one of the sons of the ,king4 #i3ab4 ,and ,miphiboseth had a young son whose name was ,micha3 and all that kindred of the house of ,siba served ,miphiboseth4 #i3ac4 ,but ,miphiboseth dwelt in ,jerusalem3 because he ate always of the king's table3 and he was lame of both feet4 #b ,kings ,chapter #aj ,the ,ammonites shamefully abuse the ambassadors of ,david3 they hire the ,syrians to the their assistance3 but are overthrown with their allies4 #aj3a4 ,and it came to pass after this1 that the king of the children of ,ammon died1 and ,hanon his son reigned in his stead4 #aj3b4 ,and ,david said3 ,i will shew kindness to ,hanon the son of ,daas1 as his father shewed kindness to me4 ,so ,david sent his servants to comfort him for the death of his father4 ,but when the servants of ,david were come into the land of the children of ,ammon1 #aj3c4 ,the princes of the children of ,ammon said to ,hanon their lord3 ,thinkest thou that for the honour of thy father1 ,david hath sent comforters to thee1 and hath not ,david rather sent his servants to thee to search1 and spy into the city1 and overthrow it8 #aj3d4 ,wherefore ,hanon took the servants of ,david1 and shaved off the one half of their beards1 and cut away half of their garments even to the buttocks1 and sent them away4 #aj3e4 ,when this was told ,david1 he sent to meet them3 for the men were sadly put to confusion1 and ,david commanded them1 saying3 ,stay at ,jericho1 till your beards be grown1 and then return4 #aj3f4 ,and the children of ,ammon seeing that they had done an injury to ,david1 sent and hired the ,syrians of ,rohob1 and the ,syrians of ,soba1 twenty thousand footmen1 and of the king of ,maacha a thousand men1 and of ,istob twelve thousand men4 #aj3g4 ,and when ,david heard this1 he sent ,joab and the whole army of warriors4 #aj3h4 ,and the children of ,ammon came out1 and set their men in array at the entering in of the gate3 but the ,syrians of ,soba1 and of ,rohob1 and of ,istob1 and of ,maacha were by themselves in the field4 #aj3i4 ,then ,joab seeing that the battle was prepared against him1 both before and behind1 chose of all the choice men of ,israel1 and put them in array against the ,syrians3 #aj3aj4 ,and the rest of the people he delivered to ,abisai his brother1 who set them in array against the children of ,ammon4 #aj3aa4 ,and ,joab said3 ,if the ,syrians are too strong for me1 then thou shalt help me1 but if the children of ,ammon are too strong for thee1 then ,i will help thee4 #aj3ab4 ,be of good courage1 and let us fight for our people1 and for the city of our ,god3 and the ,lord will do what is good in his sight4 #aj3ac4 ,and ,joab and the people that were with him1 began to fight against the ,syrians3 and they immediately fled before him4 #aj3ad4 ,and the children of ,ammon seeing that the ,syrians were fled1 they fled also before ,abisai1 and entered into the city3 and ,joab returned from the children of ,ammon1 and came to ,jerusalem4 #aj3ae4 ,then the ,syrians seeing that they had fallen before ,israel1 gathered themselves together4 #aj3af4 ,and ,adarezer sent and fetched the ,syrians1 that were beyond the river1 and brought over their army3 and ,sobach1 the captain of the host of ,adarezer1 was their general4 #aj3ag4 ,and when this was told ,david1 he gathered all ,israel together1 and passed over the ,jordan1 and came to ,helam3 and the ,syrians set themselves in array against ,david1 and fought against him4 #aj3ah4 ,and the ,syrians fled before ,israel1 and ,david slew of the ,syrians the men of seven hundred chariots1 and forty thousand horsemen3 and smote ,sobach the captain of the army1 who presently died4 #aj3ai4 ,and all the kings that were auxiliaries of ,adarezer1 seeing themselves overcome by ,israel1 were afraid and fled away1 eight and fifty thousand men before ,israel4 ,and they made peace with ,israel3 and served them1 and all the ,syrians were afraid to help the children of ,ammon any more4 #b ,kings ,chapter #aa ,david falleth into the crime of adultery with ,bethsabee3 and not finding other means to conceal it1 causeth her husband ,urias to be slain4 ,then marrieth her1 who beareth him a son4 #aa3a4 ,and it came to pass at the return of the year1 at the time when kings go forth to war1 that ,david sent ,joab and his servants with him1 and all ,israel1 and they spoiled the children of ,ammon1 and besieged ,rabba3 but ,david remained in ,jerusalem4 #aa3b4 ,in the mean time it happened that ,david arose from his bed after noon1 and walked upon the roof of the king's house3 ,and he saw from the roof of his house a woman washing herself1 over against him3 and the woman was very beautiful4 #aa3c4 ,and the king sent1 and inquired who the woman was4 ,and it was told him1 that she was ,bethsabee the daughter of ,eliam1 the wife of ,urias the ,hethite4 #aa3d4 ,and ,david sent messengers1 and took her1 and she came in to him1 and he slept with her3 and presently she was purified from her uncleanness3 #aa3e4 ,and she returned to her house having conceived4 ,and she sent and told ,david1 and said3 ,i have conceived4 #aa3f4 ,and ,david sent to ,joab1 saying3 ,send me ,urias the ,hethite4 ,and ,joab sent ,urias to ,david4 #aa3g4 ,and ,urias came to ,david4 ,and ,david asked how ,joab did1 and the people1 and how the war was carried on4 #aa3h4 ,and ,david said to ,urias3 ,go into thy house1 and wash thy feet4 ,and ,urias went out from the king's house1 and there went out after him a mess of meat from the king4 #aa3i4 ,but ,urias slept before the gate of the king's house1 with the other servants of his lord1 and went not down to his own house4 #aa3aj4 ,and it was told ,david by some that said3 ,urias went not to his house4 ,and ,david said to ,urias3 ,didst thou not come from thy journey8 why didst thou not go down to thy house8 #aa3aa4 ,and ,urias said to ,david3 ,the ark of ,god and ,israel and ,juda dwell in tents1 and my lord ,joab and the servants of my lord abide upon the face of the earth3 and shall ,i go into my house1 to eat and to drink1 and to sleep with my wife8 ,by thy welfare and by the welfare of thy soul ,i will not do this thing4 #aa3ab4 ,then ,david said to ,urias3 ,tarry here to day1 and to morrow ,i will send thee away4 ,urias tarried in ,jerusalem that day and the next4 #aa3ac4 ,and ,david called him to eat and to drink before him1 and he made him drunk3 and he went out in the evening1 and slept on his couch with the servants of his lord1 and went not down into his house4 #aa3ad4 ,and when the morning was come1 ,david wrote a letter to ,joab3 and sent it by the hand of ,urias1 #aa3ae4 ,writing in the letter3 ,set ye ,urias in the front of the battle1 where the fight is strongest3 and leave ye him1 that he may be wounded and die4 #aa3af4 ,wherefore as ,joab was besieging the city1 he put ,urias in the place where he knew the bravest men were4 #aa3ag4 ,and the men coming out of the city1 fought against ,joab1 and there fell some of the people of the servants of ,david1 and ,urias the ,hethite was killed also4 #aa3ah4 ,then ,joab sent1 and told ,david all things concerning the battle4 #aa3ai4 ,and he charged the messenger1 saying3 ,when thou hast told all the words of the battle to the king1 #aa3bj4 ,if thou see him to be angry1 and he shall say3 ,why did you approach so near to the wall to fight8 knew you not that many darts are thrown from above off the wall8 #aa3ba4 ,who killed ,abimelech the son of ,jerobaal8 did not a woman cast a piece of a millstone upon him from the wall and slew him in ,thebes8 ,why did you go near the wall8 ,thou shalt say3 ,thy servant ,urias the ,hethite is also slain4 #aa3bb4 ,so the messenger departed1 and came and told ,david all that ,joab had commanded him4 #aa3bc4 ,and the messenger said to ,david3 ,the men prevailed against us1 and they came out to us into the field3 and we vigorously charged and pursued them even to the gate of the city4 #aa3bd4 ,and the archers shot their arrows at thy servants from off the wall above3 and some of the king's servants are slain1 and thy servant ,urias the ,hethite is also dead4 #aa3be4 ,and ,david said to the messenger3 ,thus shalt thou say to ,joab3 ,let not this thing discourage thee3 for various is the event of war3 and sometimes one1 sometimes another is consumed by the sword3 encourage thy warriors against the city1 and exhort them that thou mayest overthrow it4 #aa3bf4 ,and the wife of ,urias heard that ,urias her husband was dead1 and she mourned for him4 #aa3bg4 ,and the mourning being over1 ,david sent and brought her into his house1 and she became his wife1 and she bore him a son3 and this thing which ,david had done1 was displeasing to the ,lord4 #b ,kings ,chapter #ab ,nathan's parable4 ,david confesseth his sin1 and is forgiven3 yet so as to be sentenced to most severe temporal punishments4 ,the death of the child4 ,the birth of ,solomon4 ,the taking of ,rabbath4 #ab3a4 ,and the ,lord sent ,nathan to ,david3 and when he was come to him1 he said to him3 ,there were two men in one city1 the one rich1 and the other poor4 #ab3b4 ,the rich man had exceeding many sheep and oxen4 #ab3c4 ,but the poor man had nothing at all but one little ewe lamb1 which he had bought and nourished up1 and which had grown up in his house together with his children1 eating of his bread1 and drinking of his cup1 and sleeping in his bosom3 and it was unto him as a daughter4 #ab3d4 ,and when a certain stranger was come to the rich man1 he spared to take of his own sheep and oxen1 to make a feast for that stranger1 who was come to him1 but took the poor man's ewe1 and dressed it for the man that was come to him4 #ab3e4 ,and ,david's anger being exceedingly kindled against that man1 he said to ,nathan3 ,as the ,lord liveth1 the man that hath done this is a child of death4 #ab3f4 ,he shall restore the ewe fourfold1 because he did this thing1 and had no pity4 #ab3g4 ,and ,nathan said to ,david3 ,thou art the man4 ,thus saith the ,lord the ,god of ,israel3 ,i anointed thee king over ,israel1 and ,i delivered thee from the hand of ,saul1 #ab3h4 ,and gave thee thy master's house and thy master's wives into thy bosom1 and gave thee the house of ,israel and ,juda3 and if these things be little1 ,i shall add far greater things unto thee4 #ab3i4 ,why therefore hast thou despised the word of the ,lord1 to do evil in my sight8 ,thou hast killed ,urias the ,hethite with the sword1 and hast taken his wife to be thy wife1 and hast slain him with the sword of the children of ,ammon4 #ab3aj4 ,therefore the sword shall never depart from thy house1 because thou hast despised me1 and hast taken the wife of ,urias the ,hethite to be thy wife4 #ab3aa4 ,thus saith the ,lord3 ,behold1 ,i will raise up evil against thee out of thy own house1 and ,i will take thy wives before thy eyes and give them to thy neighbour1 and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun4 ,i will raise1 etc444 ,all these evils1 inasmuch as they were punishments1 came upon ,david by a just judgment of ,god1 for his sin1 and therefore ,god says1 ,i will raise1 etc42 but inasmuch as they were sins1 on the part of ,absalom and his associates1 ,god was not the author of them1 but only permitted them4 #ab3ab4 ,for thou didst it secretly3 but ,i will do this thing in the sight of all ,israel1 and in the sight of the sun4 #ab3ac4 ,and ,david said to ,nathan3 ,i have sinned against the ,lord4 ,and ,nathan said to ,david3 ,the ,lord also hath taken away thy sin3 thou shalt not die4 #ab3ad4 ,nevertheless1 because thou hast given occasion to the enemies of the ,lord to blaspheme1 for this thing1 the child that is born to thee1 shall surely die4 #ab3ae4 ,and ,nathan returned to his house4 ,the ,lord also struck the child which the wife of ,urias had borne to ,david1 and his life was despaired of4 #ab3af4 ,and ,david besought the ,lord for the child3 and ,david kept a fast1 and going in by himself lay upon the ground4 #ab3ag4 ,and the ancients of his house came1 to make him rise from the ground3 but he would not1 neither did he eat meat with them4 #ab3ah4 ,and it came to pass on the seventh day that the child died3 and the servants of ,david feared to tell him1 that the child was dead4 ,for they said3 ,behold when the child was yet alive1 we spoke to him1 and he would not hearken to our voice3 how much more will he afflict himself if we tell him that the child is dead8 #ab3ai4 ,but when ,david saw his servants whispering1 he understood that the child was dead3 and he said to his servants3 ,is the child dead8 ,they answered him ,he is dead4 #ab3bj4 ,then ,david arose from the ground1 and washed and anointed himself3 and when he had changed his apparel1 he went into the house of the ,lord3 and worshipped1 and then he came into his own house1 and he called for bread1 and ate4 #ab3ba4 ,and his servants said to him3 ,what thing is this that thou hast done8 thou didst fast and weep for the child1 while it was alive1 but when the child was dead1 thou didst rise up1 and eat bread4 #ab3bb4 ,and he said3 ,while the child was yet alive1 ,i fasted and wept for him3 for ,i said3 ,who knoweth whether the ,lord may not give him to me1 and the child may live8 #ab3bc4 ,but now that he is dead1 why should ,i fast8 ,shall ,i be able to bring him back any more8 ,i shall go to him rather3 but he shall not return to me4 #ab3bd4 ,and ,david comforted ,bethsabee his wife1 and went in unto her1 and slept with her3 and she bore a son1 and he called his name ,solomon1 and the ,lord loved him4 #ab3be4 ,and he sent by the hand of ,nathan the prophet1 and called his name1 ,amiable to the ,lord1 because the ,lord loved him4 ,amiable to the ,lord444 ,or1 beloved of the ,lord4 ,in ,hebrew1 ,jedidiah4 #ab3bf4 ,and ,joab fought against ,rabbath of the children of ,ammon1 and laid close siege to the royal city4 #ab3bg4 ,and ,joab sent messengers to ,david1 saying3 ,i have fought against ,rabbath1 and the city of waters is about to be taken4 ,the city of waters444 ,rabbath the royal city of the ,ammonites1 was called the city of waters1 from being encompassed with waters4 #ab3bh4 ,now therefore gather thou the rest of the people together1 and besiege the city and take it3 lest when the city shall be wasted by me1 the victory be ascribed to my name4 #ab3bi4 ,then ,david gathered all the people together1 and went out against ,rabbath3 and after fighting1 he took it4 #ab3cj4 ,and he took the crown of their king from his head1 the weight of which was a talent of gold1 set with most precious stones1 and it was put upon ,david's head1 and the spoils of the city which were very great he carried away4 #ab3ca4 ,and bringing forth the people thereof he sawed them1 and drove over them chariots armed with iron3 and divided them with knives1 and made them pass through brickkilns3 so did he to all the cities of the children of ,ammon3 and ,david returned1 with all the army to ,jerusalem4 #b ,kings ,chapter #ac ,ammon ravisheth ,thamar4 ,for which ,absalom killeth him1 and flieth to ,gessur4 #ac3a4 ,and it came to pass after this that ,ammon the son of ,david loved the sister of ,absalom the son of ,david1 who was very beautiful1 and her name was ,thamar4 #ac3b4 ,and he was exceedingly fond of her1 so that he fell sick for the love of her3 for as she was a virgin1 he thought it hard to do any thing dishonestly with her4 #ac3c4 ,now ,ammon had a friend1 named ,jonadab the son of ,semmaa the brother of ,david1 a very wise man3 ,a very wise man444 ,that is1 a crafty and subtle man3 for the counsel he gave on this occasion shews that his wisdom was but carnal and worldly4 #ac3d4 ,and he said to him3 ,why dost thou grow so lean from day to day1 ,o son of the king8 why dost thou not tell me the reason of it8 ,and ,ammon said to him3 ,i am in love with ,thamar the sister of my brother ,absalom4 #ac3e4 ,and ,jonadab said to him3 ,lie down upon thy bed1 and feign thyself sick3 and when thy father shall come to visit thee1 say to him3 ,let my sister ,thamar1 ,i pray thee1 come to me1 to give me to eat1 and to make me a mess1 that ,i may eat it at her hand4 #ac3f4 ,so ,ammon lay down1 and made as if he were sick3 and when the king came to visit him1 ,ammon said to the king3 ,i pray thee let my sister ,thamar come1 and make in my sight two little messes1 that ,i may eat at her hand4 #ac3g4 ,then ,david sent home to ,thamar1 saying3 ,come to the house of thy brother ,ammon1 and make him a mess4 #ac3h4 ,and ,thamar came to the house of ,ammon her brother3 but he was laid down3 and she took meal and tempered it3 and dissolving it in his sight she made little messes4 #ac3i4 ,and taking what she had boiled1 she poured it out1 and set it before him1 but he would not eat3 and ,ammon said3 ,put out all persons from me4 ,and when they had put all persons out1 #ac3aj4 ,ammon said to ,thamar3 ,bring the mess into the chamber1 that ,i may eat at thy hand4 ,and ,thamar took the little messes which she had made1 and brought them in to her brother ,ammon in the chamber4 #ac3aa4 ,and when she had presented him the meat1 he took hold of her1 and said3 ,come lie with me1 my sister4 #ac3ab4 ,she answered him3 ,do not so1 my brother1 do not force me3 for no such thing must be done in ,israel4 ,do not thou this folly4 #ac3ac4 ,for ,i shall not be able to bear my shame1 and thou shalt be as one of the fools in ,israel3 but rather speak to the king1 and he will not deny me to thee4 #ac3ad4 ,but he would not hearken to her prayers1 but being stronger overpowered her and lay with her4 #ac3ae4 ,then ,ammon hated her with an exceeding great hatred3 so that the hatred wherewith he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her before4 ,and ,ammon said to her3 ,arise1 and get thee gone4 #ac3af4 ,she answered him3 ,the evil which now thou dost against me1 in driving me away1 is greater than that which thou didst before4 ,and he would not hearken to her3 #ac3ag4 ,but calling the servants that ministered to him1 he said3 ,thrust this woman out from me3 and shut the door after her4 #ac3ah4 ,and she was clothed with a long robe3 for the king's daughters that were virgins1 used such kind of garments4 ,then his servant thrust her out3 and shut the door after her4 #ac3ai4 ,and she put ashes on her head1 and rent her long robe and laid her hands upon her head1 and went on crying4 #ac3bj4 ,and ,absalom her brother said to her3 ,hath thy brother ,ammon lain with thee8 but now1 sister1 hold thy peace1 he is thy brother3 and afflict not thy heart for this thing4 ,so ,thamar remained pining away in the house of ,absalom her brother4 #ac3ba4 ,and when king ,david heard of these things he was exceedingly grieved3 and he would not afflict the spirit of his son ,ammon1 for he loved him1 because he was his firstborn4 #ac3bb4 ,but ,absalom spoke not to ,ammon neither good nor evil3 for ,absalom hated ,ammon because he had ravished his sister ,thamar4 #ac3bc4 ,and it came to pass after two years1 that the sheep of ,absalom were shorn in ,baalhasor1 which is near ,ephraim3 and ,absalom invited all the king's sons3 #ac3bd4 ,and he came to the king1 and said to him3 ,behold thy servant's sheep are shorn4 ,let the king1 ,i pray1 with his servants come to his servant4 #ac3be4 ,and the king said to ,absalom3 ,nay1 my son1 do not ask that we should all come1 and be chargeable to thee4 ,and when he pressed him1 and he would not go1 he blessed him4 #ac3bf4 ,and ,absalom said3 ,if thou wilt not come1 at least let my brother ,ammon1 ,i beseech thee1 come with us4 ,and the king said to him3 ,it is not necessary that he should go with thee4 #ac3bg4 ,but ,absalom pressed him1 so that he let ,ammon and all the king's sons go with him4 ,and ,absalom made a feast as it were the feast of a king4 #ac3bh4 ,and ,absalom had commanded his servants1 saying3 ,take notice when ,ammon shall be drunk with wine1 and when ,i shall say to you3 ,strike him1 and kill him1 fear not3 for it is ,i that command you3 take courage1 and be valiant men4 #ac3bi4 ,and the servants of ,absalom did to ,ammon as ,absalom had commanded them4 ,and all the king's sons arose and got up every man upon his mule1 and fled4 #ac3cj4 ,and while they were yet in the way1 a rumour came to ,david1 saying3 ,absalom hath slain all the king's sons1 and there is not one them left4 #ac3ca4 ,then the king rose up1 and rent his garments3 and fell upon the ground1 and all his servants1 that stood about him1 rent their garments4 #ac3cb4 ,but ,jonadab the son of ,semmaa ,david's brother answering1 said3 ,let not my lord the king think that all the king's sons are slain3 ,ammon only is dead1 for he was appointed by the mouth of ,absalom from the day that he ravished his sister ,thamar4 #ac3cc4 ,now therefore let not my lord the king take this thing into his heart1 saying3 ,all the king's sons are slain3 for ,ammon only is dead4 #ac3cd4 ,but ,absalom fled away3 and the young man that kept the watch1 lifted up his eyes and looked1 and behold there came much people by a by-way on the side of the mountain4 #ac3ce4 ,and ,jonadab said to the king3 ,behold the king's sons are come3 as thy servant said1 so it is4 #ac3cf4 ,and when he made an end of speaking1 the king's sons also appeared3 and coming in they lifted up their voice1 and wept3 and the king also and all his servants wept very much4 #ac3cg4 ,but ,absalom fled1 and went to ,tholomai the son of ,ammiud the king of ,gessur4 ,and ,david mourned for his son every day4 #ac3ch4 ,and ,absalom after he was fled1 and come into ,gessur1 was there three years4 ,and king ,david ceased to pursue after ,absalom1 because he was comforted concerning the death of ,ammon4 #b ,kings ,chapter #ad ,joab procureth ,absalom's return1 and his admittance to the king's presence4 #ad3a4 ,and ,joab the son of ,sarvia1 understanding that the king's heart was turned to ,absalom1 #ad3b4 ,sent to ,thecua1 and fetched from thence a wise woman3 and said to her3 ,feign thyself to be a mourner1 and put on mourning apparel1 and be not anointed with oil1 that thou mayest be as a woman that had a long time been mourning for one dead4 #ad3c4 ,and thou shalt go in to the king1 and shalt speak to him in this manner4 ,and ,joab put the words in her mouth4 #ad3d4 ,and when the woman of ,thecua was come in to the king1 she fell before him upon the ground1 and worshipped1 and said3 ,save me1 ,o king4 #ad3e4 ,and the king said to her3 ,what is the matter with thee8 ,she answered3 ,alas1 ,i am a widow woman3 for my husband is dead4 #ad3f4 ,and thy handmaid had two sons3 and they quarrelled with each other in the field1 and there was none to part them3 and the one struck the other1 and slew him4 #ad3g4 ,and behold the whole kindred rising against thy handmaid1 saith3 ,deliver him that hath slain his brother1 that we may kill him for the life of his brother1 whom he slew1 and that we may destroy the heir3 and they seek to quench my spark which is left1 and will leave my husband no name1 nor remainder upon the earth4 #ad3h4 ,and the king said to the woman3 ,go to thy house1 and ,i will give charge concerning thee4 #ad3i4 ,and the woman of ,thecua said to the king3 ,upon me1 my lord be the iniquity1 and upon the house of my father3 but may the king and his throne be guiltless4 #ad3aj4 ,and the king said3 ,if any one shall say ought against thee1 bring him to me1 and he shall not touch thee any more4 #ad3aa4 ,and she said3 ,let the king remember the ,lord his ,god1 that the next of kin be not multiplied to take revenge1 and that they may not kill my son4 ,and he said3 ,as the ,lord liveth1 there shall not one hair of thy son fall to the earth4 #ad3ab4 ,the woman said3 ,let thy hand maid speak one word to my lord the king4 ,and he said3 ,speak4 #ad3ac4 ,and the woman said3 ,why hast thou thought such a thing against the people of ,god1 and why hath the king spoken this word1 to sin1 and not bring home again his own exile8 #ad3ad4 ,we all die1 and like waters that return no more1 we fall down into the earth3 neither will ,god have a soul to perish1 but recalleth1 meaning that he that is cast off should not altogether perish4 #ad3ae4 ,now therefore ,i am come1 to speak this word to my lord the king before the people4 ,and thy handmaid said3 ,i will speak to the king1 it maybe the king will perform the request of his handmaid4 #ad3af4 ,and the king hath hearkened to me to deliver his handmaid out of the hand of all that would destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of ,god4 #ad3ag4 ,then let thy handmaid say1 that the word of the ,lord the king be made as a sacrifice4 ,for even as an angel of ,god1 so is my lord the king1 that he is neither moved with blessing nor cursing3 wherefore the ,lord thy ,god is also with thee4 #ad3ah4 ,and the king answering1 said to the woman3 ,hide not from me the thing that ,i ask thee4 ,and the woman said to him3 ,speak1 my lord the king4 #ad3ai4 ,and the king said3 ,is not the hand of ,joab with thee in all this8 ,the woman answered1 and said3 ,by the health of thy soul1 my lord1 ,o king1 it is neither on the left hand1 nor on the right1 in all these things which my lord the king hath spoken3 for thy servant ,joab1 he commanded me1 and he put all these words into the mouth of thy handmaid4 #ad3bj4 ,that ,i should come about with this form of speech1 thy servant ,joab commanded this3 but thou1 my lord1 ,o king1 art wise1 according to the wisdom of an angel of ,god1 to understand all things upon earth4 #ad3ba4 ,and the king said to ,joab3 ,behold ,i am appeased and have granted thy request3 ,go therefore and fetch back the boy ,absalom4 #ad3bb4 ,and ,joab falling down to the ground upon his face1 adored1 and blessed the king3 and ,joab said3 ,this day thy servant hath understood1 that ,i have found grace in thy sight1 my lord1 ,o king3 for thou hast fulfilled the request of thy servant4 ,blessed444 ,that is1 and gave thanks to the king4 #ad3bc4 ,then ,joab arose and went to ,gessur1 and brought ,absalom to ,jerusalem4 #ad3bd4 ,but the king said3 ,let him return into his house1 and let him not see my face4 ,so ,absalom returned into his house1 and saw not the king's face4 #ad3be4 ,but in all ,israel there was not a man so comely1 and so exceedingly beautiful as ,absalom3 from the sole of the foot to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him4 #ad3bf4 ,and when he polled his hair 7now he was polled once a year1 because his hair was burdensome to him7 he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred sicles1 according to the common weight4 #ad3bg4 ,and there were born to ,absalom three sons3 and one daughter1 whose name was ,thamar1 and she was very beautiful4 #ad3bh4 ,and ,absalom dwelt two years in ,jerusalem1 and saw not the king's face4 #ad3bi4 ,he sent therefore to ,joab1 to send him to the king3 but he would not come to him4 ,and when he had sent the second time1 and he would not come to him1 #ad3cj4 ,he said to his servants3 ,you know the field of ,joab near my field1 that hath a crop of barley3 go now and set it on fire4 ,so the servants of ,absalom set the corn on fire4 ,and ,joab's servants coming with their garments rent1 said3 ,the servants of ,absalom have set part of the field on fire4 #ad3ca4 ,then ,joab arose1 and came to ,absalom to his house1 and said3 ,why have thy servants set my corn on fire8 #ad3cb4 ,and ,absalom answered ,joab3 ,i sent to thee beseeching thee to come to me1 that ,i might send thee to the king1 to say to him3 ,wherefore am ,i come from ,gessur8 it had been better for me to be there3 ,i beseech thee therefore that ,i may see the face of the king3 and if he be mindful of my iniquity1 let him kill me4 #ad3cc4 ,so ,joab going in to the king1 told him all3 and ,absalom was called for1 and1 he went in to the king3 and prostrated himself on the ground before him3 and the king kissed ,absalom4 #b ,kings ,chapter #ae ,absalom's policy and conspiracy4 ,david is obliged to flee4 #ae3a4 ,now after these things ,absalom made himself chariots1 and horsemen1 and fifty men to run before him4 #ae3b4 ,and ,absalom rising up early stood by the entrance of the gate1 and when any man had business to come to the king's judgment1 ,absalom called him to him1 and said3 ,of what city art thou8 ,he answered1 and said3 ,thy servant is of such tribe of ,israel4 #ae3c4 ,and ,absalom answered him3 ,thy words seem to me good and just4 ,but there is no man appointed by the king to hear thee4 ,and ,absalom said3 #ae3d4 ,o that they would make me judge over the land1 that all that have business might come to me1 that ,i might do them justice4 #ae3e4 ,moreover when any man came to him to salute him1 he put forth his hand1 and took him1 and kissed him4 #ae3f4 ,and this he did to all ,israel that came for judgment1 to be heard by the king1 and he enticed the hearts of the men of ,israel4 #ae3g4 ,and after forty years1 ,absalom said to king ,david3 ,let me go1 and pay my vows which ,i have vowed to the ,lord in ,hebron4 #ae3h4 ,for thy servant made a vow1 when he was in ,gessur of ,syria1 saying3 ,if the ,lord shall bring me again into ,jerusalem1 ,i will offer sacrifice to the ,lord4 #ae3i4 ,and king ,david said to him3 ,go in peace4 ,and he arose1 and went to ,hebron4 #ae3aj4 ,and ,absalom sent spies into all the tribes of ,israel1 saying3 ,as soon as you shall hear the sound of the trumpet1 say ye3 ,absalom reigneth in ,hebron4 #ae3aa4 ,now there went with ,absalom two hundred men out of ,jerusalem that were called1 going with simplicity of heart1 and knowing nothing of the design4 #ae3ab4 ,absalom also sent for ,achitophel the ,gilonite1 ,david's counsellor1 from his city ,gilo4 ,and while he was offering sacrifices1 there was a strong conspiracy1 and the people running together increased with ,absalom4 #ae3ac4 ,and there came a messenger to ,david1 saying3 ,all ,israel with their whole heart followeth ,absalom4 #ae3ad4 ,and ,david said to his servants1 that were with him in ,jerusalem3 ,arise and let us flee3 for we shall not escape else from the face of ,absalom3 make haste to go out1 lest he come and overtake us1 and bring ruin upon us1 and smite the city with the edge of the sword4 #ae3ae4 ,and the king's servants said to him3 ,whatsoever our lord the king shall command1 we thy servants will willingly execute4 #ae3af4 ,and the king went forth1 and all his household on foot3 and the king left ten women his concubines to keep the house3 ,concubines444 ,that is1 wives of an inferior degree4 #ae3ag4 ,and the king going forth and all ,israel on foot1 stood afar off from the house3 #ae3ah4 ,and all his servants walked by him1 and the bands of the ,cerethi1 and the ,phelethi1 and all the ,gethites1 valiant warriors1 six hundred men who had followed him from ,geth on foot1 went before the king4 #ae3ai4 ,and the king said to ,ethai the ,gethite3 ,why comest thou with us3 return and dwell with the king1 for thou art a stranger1 and art come out of thy own place4 #ae3bj4 ,yesterday thou camest1 and to day shalt thou be forced to go forth with us8 but ,i shall go whither ,i am going3 return thou1 and take back thy brethren with thee1 and the ,lord will shew thee mercy1 and truth1 because thou hast shewn grace and fidelity4 #ae3ba4 ,and ,ethai answered the king1 saying3 ,as the ,lord liveth1 and as my lord the king liveth3 in what place soever thou shalt be1 my lord1 ,o king1 either in death1 or in life1 there will thy servant be4 #ae3bb4 ,and ,david said to ,ethai3 ,come1 and pass over4 ,and ,ethai the ,gethite passed1 and all the men that were with him1 and the rest of the people4 #ae3bc4 ,and they all wept with a loud voice1 and all the people passed over3 the king also himself went over the brook ,cedron1 and all the people marched towards the way that looketh to the desert4 #ae3bd4 ,and ,sadoc the priest also came1 and all the ,levites with him carrying the ark of the covenant of ,god1 and they set down the ark of ,god3 and ,abiathar went up1 till all the people that was come out of the city had done passing4 #ae3be4 ,and the king said to ,sadoc3 ,carry back the ark of ,god into the city3 if ,i shall find grace in the sight of the ,lord1 he will bring me again1 and he will shew me it1 and his tabernacle4 #ae3bf4 ,but if he shall say to me3 ,thou pleasest me not3 ,i am ready1 let him do that which is good before him4 #ae3bg4 ,and the king said to ,sadoc the priest3 ,o seer1 return into the city in peace3 and let ,achimaas thy son1 and ,jonathan the son of ,abiathar1 your two sons1 be with you4 #ae3bh4 ,behold ,i will lie hid in the plains of the wilderness1 till there come word from you to certify me4 #ae3bi4 ,so ,sadoc and ,abiathar carried back the ark of ,god into ,jerusalem3 and they tarried there4 #ae3cj4 ,but ,david went up by the ascent of mount ,olivet1 going up and weeping1 walking barefoot1 and with his head covered1 and all the people that were with them1 went up with their heads covered weeping4 ,weeping1 etc444 ,david on this occasion wept for his sins1 which he knew were the cause of all his sufferings4 #ae3ca4 ,and it was told ,david that ,achitophel also was in the conspiracy with ,absalom1 and ,david said3 ,infatuate1 ,o ,lord1 ,i beseech thee1 the counsel of ,achitophel4 #ae3cb4 ,and when ,david was come to the top of the mountain1 where he was about to adore the ,lord1 behold ,chusai the ,arachite1 came to meet him with his garment rent and his head covered with earth4 #ae3cc4 ,and ,david said to him3 ,if thou come with me1 thou wilt be a burden to me3 #ae3cd4 ,but if thou return into the city1 and wilt say to ,absalom3 ,i am thy servant1 ,o king3 as ,i have been thy father's servant1 so ,i will be thy servant3 thou shalt defeat the counsel of ,achitophel4 #ae3ce4 ,and thou hast with thee ,sadoc1 and soever thou shalt hear out of the king's house1 thou shalt tell it to ,sadoc and ,abiathar the priests4 #ae3cf4 ,and there are with them their two sons ,achimaas2 the son of ,sadoc1 and ,jonathan the son of ,abiathar3 and you shall send by them to me every thing that you shall hear4 #ae3cg4 ,then ,chusai the friend of ,david went into the city1 and ,absalom came into ,jerusalem4 #b ,kings ,chapter #af ,siba bringeth provisions to ,david4 ,semei curseth him4 ,absalom defileth his father's wives4 #af3a4 ,and when ,david was a little past the top of the hill1 behold ,siba the servant of ,miphiboseth came to meet him with two asses1 laden with two hundred loaves of bread1 and a hundred bunches of raisins1 a hundred cakes of figs1 and a vessel of wine4 #af3b4 ,and the king said to ,siba3 ,what mean these things8 ,and ,siba answered3 ,the asses are for the king's household to sit on3 and the loaves and the figs for thy servants to eat1 and the wine to drink if any man be faint in the desert4 #af3c4 ,and the king said3 ,where is thy master's son8 ,and ,siba answered the king3 ,he remained in ,jerusalem1 saying3 ,to day1 will the house of ,israel restore me the kingdom of my father4 #af3d4 ,and the king said to ,siba3 ,i give thee all that belonged to ,miphiboseth4 ,and ,siba said3 ,i beseech thee let me find grace before thee1 my lord1 ,o king4 #af3e4 ,and king ,david came as far as ,bahurim3 and behold there came out from thence a man of the kindred of the house of ,saul named ,semei1 the son of ,gera1 and coming out he cursed as he went on1 #af3f4 ,and he threw stones at ,david1 and at all the servants of king ,david3 and all the people1 and all the warriors walked on the right1 and on the left side of the king4 #af3g4 ,and thus said ,semei when he cursed the king3 ,come out1 come out1 thou man of blood1 and thou man of ,belial4 #af3h4 ,the ,lord hath repaid thee for all the blood of the house of ,saul3 because thou hast usurped the kingdom in his stead1 and the ,lord hath given the kingdom into the hand of ,absalom thy son3 and behold thy evils press upon thee1 because thou art a man of blood4 #af3i4 ,and ,abisai the son of ,sarvia said to the king3 ,why should this dead dog curse my lord the king8 ,i will go1 and cut off his head4 #af3aj4 ,and the king said3 ,what have ,i to do with you1 ye sons of ,sarvia8 ,let him alone and let him curse3 for the ,lord hath bid him curse ,david3 and who is he that shall dare say1 why hath he done so8 ,hath bid him curse444 ,not that the ,lord was the author of ,semei's sin1 which proceeded purely from his own malice1 and the abuse of his free will4 ,but that knowing1 and suffering his malicious disposition to break out on this occasion1 he made use of him as his instrument to punish ,david for his sins4 #af3aa4 ,and the king said to ,abisai1 and to all his servants3 ,behold my son1 who came forth from my bowels1 seeketh my life3 how much more now a son of ,jemini8 let him alone that he may curse as the ,lord hath bidden him4 #af3ab4 ,perhaps the ,lord may look upon my affliction1 and the ,lord may render me good for the cursing of this day4 #af3ac4 ,and ,david and his men with him went by the way4 ,and ,semei by the hill's side went over against him1 cursing1 and casting stones at him1 and scattering earth4 #af3ad4 ,and the king and all the people with him came weary1 and refreshed themselves there4 #af3ae4 ,but ,absalom and all his people came into ,jerusalem1 and ,achitophel was with him4 #af3af4 ,and when ,chusai the ,arachite1 ,david's friend1 was come to ,absalom1 he said to him3 ,god save thee1 ,o king1 ,god save thee1 ,o king4 #af3ag4 ,and ,absalom said to him1 ,is this thy kindness to thy friend8 ,why wentest thou not with thy friend8 #af3ah4 ,and ,chusai answered ,absalom3 ,nay3 for ,i will be his1 whom the ,lord hath chosen1 and all this people1 and all ,israel1 and with him will ,i abide4 #af3ai4 ,besides this1 whom shall ,i serve8 is it not the king's son8 as ,i have served thy father1 so will ,i serve thee also4 #af3bj4 ,and ,absalom said to ,achitophel3 ,consult what we are to do4 #af3ba4 ,and ,achitophel said to ,absalom3 ,go in to the concubines of thy father1 whom he hath left to keep the house3 that when all ,israel shall hear that thou hast disgraced thy father1 their hands may be strengthened with thee4 ,their hands may be strengthened1 etc444 ,the people might apprehend lest ,absalom should be reconciled to his father1 and therefore they folllowed him with some fear of being left in the lurch1 till they saw such a crime committed as seemed to make a reconciliation impossible4 #af3bb4 ,so they spread a tent for ,absalom on the top of the house1 and he went in to his father's concubines before all ,israel4 #af3bc4 ,now the counsel of ,achitophel1 which he gave in those days1 was as if a man should consult ,god3 so was all the counsel of ,achitophel1 both when he was with ,david1 and when he was with ,absalom4 #b ,kings ,chapter #ag ,achitophel's counsel is defeated by ,chusai3 who sendeth intelligence to ,david4 ,achitophel hangeth himself4 #ag3a4 ,and ,achitophel said to ,absalom3 ,i will choose me twelve thousand men1 and ,i will arise and pursue after ,david this night4 #ag3b4 ,and coming upon him 7for he is now weary1 and weak handed7 ,i will defeat him3 and when all the people is put to flight that is with him1 ,i will kill the king who will be left alone4 #ag3c4 ,and ,i will bring back all the people1 as if they were but one man3 for thou seekest but one man3 and all the people shall be in peace4 #ag3d4 ,and his saying pleased ,absalom1 and all the ancients of ,israel4 #ag3e4 ,but ,absalom said3 ,call ,chusai the ,arachite1 and let us hear what he also saith4 #ag3f4 ,and when ,chusai was come to ,absalom1 ,absalom said to him3 ,achitophel hath spoken after this manner3 shall we do it or not8 what counsel dost thou give8 #ag3g4 ,and ,chusai said to ,absalom3 ,the counsel that ,achitophel hath given this time is not good4 #ag3h4 ,and again ,chusai said3 ,thou knowest thy father1 and the men that are with him1 that they are very valiant1 and bitter in their mind1 as a bear raging in the wood when her whelps are taken away3 and thy father is a warrior1 and will not lodge with the people4 #ag3i4 ,perhaps he now lieth hid in pits1 or in some other place where he liest3 and when any one shall fall at the first1 every one that heareth it shall say3 ,there is a slaughter among the people that followed ,absalom4 #ag3aj4 ,and the most valiant man whose heart is as the heart of a lion1 shall melt for fear3 for all the people of ,israel know thy father to be a valiant man1 and that all who are with him are valiant4 #ag3aa4 ,but this seemeth to me to be good counsel3 ,let all ,israel be gathered to thee1 from ,dan to ,bersabee1 as the sand of the sea which cannot be numbered3 and thou shalt be in the midst of them4 #ag3ab4 ,and we shall come upon him in what place soever he shall be found3 and we shall cover him1 as the dew falleth upon the ground1 and we shall not leave of the men that are with him1 not so much as one4 #ag3ac4 ,and if he shall enter into any city1 all ,israel shall cast ropes round about that city1 and we will draw it into the river1 so that there shall not be found so much as one small stone thereof4 #ag3ad4 ,and ,absalom1 and all the men of ,israel said3 ,the counsel of ,chusai the ,arachite is better than the counsel of ,achitophel3 and by the will of the ,lord the profitable counsel of ,achitophel was defeated1 that the ,lord might bring evil upon ,absalom4 #ag3ae4 ,and ,chusai said to ,sadoc and ,abiathar the priests3 ,thus and thus did ,achitophel counsel ,absalom1 and the ancients of ,israel3 and thus and thus did ,i counsel them4 #ag3af4 ,now therefore send quickly1 and tell ,david1 saying3 ,tarry not this night in the plains of the wilderness1 but without delay pass over3 lest the king be swallowed up1 and all the people that is with him4 #ag3ag4 ,and ,jonathan and ,achimaas stayed by the fountain ,rogel3 and there went a maid and told them3 and they went forward1 to carry the message to king ,david1 for they might not be seen1 nor enter into the city4 #ag3ah4 ,but a certain boy saw them1 and told ,absalom3 but they making haste went into the house of a certain man in ,bahurim1 who had a well in his court1 and they went down into it4 #ag3ai4 ,and a woman took1 and spread a covering over the mouth of the well1 as it were to dry sodden barley and so the thing was not known4 #ag3bj4 ,and when ,absalom's servants were come into the house1 they said to the woman3 ,where is ,achimaas and ,jonathan8 and the woman answered them3 ,they passed on in haste1 after they had tasted a little water4 ,but they that sought them1 when they found them not1 returned into ,jerusalem4 #ag3ba4 ,and when they were gone1 they came up out of the well1 and going on told king ,david1 and said3 ,arise1 and pass quickly over the river3 for this manner of counsel has ,achitophel given against you4 #ag3bb4 ,so ,david arose1 and all the people that were with him1 and they passed over the ,jordan1 until it grew light1 and not one of them was left that was not gone ever the river4 #ag3bc4 ,but ,achitophel seeing that his counsel was not followed1 saddled his ass1 and arose and went home to his house and to his city1 and putting his house in order1 hanged himself1 and was buried in the sepulchre of his father4 #ag3bd4 ,but ,david came to the camp1 and ,absalom passed over the ,jordan1 he and all the men of ,israel with him4 ,to the camp444 ,the city of ,mahanaim1 the name of which1 in ,hebrew1 signifies ,the camp4 ,it was a city of note at that time1 as appears from its having been chosen by ,isboseth for the place of his residence4 #ag3be4 ,now ,absalom appointed ,amasa in ,joab's stead over the army3 and ,amasa was the son of a man who was called ,jethra1 of ,jezrael1 who went in to ,abigail the daughter of ,naas1 the sister of ,sarvia who was the mother of ,joab4 #ag3bf4 ,and ,israel camped with ,absalom in the land of ,galaad4 #ag3bg4 ,and when ,david was come to the camp1 ,sobi the son of ,naas of ,rabbath of the children of ,ammon1 and ,machir the son of ,ammihel of ,lodabar and ,berzellai the ,galaadite of ,rogelim1 #ag3bh4 ,brought him beds1 and tapestry1 and earthen vessels1 and wheat1 and barley1 and meal1 and parched corn1 and beans1 and lentils1 and fried pulse1 #ag3bi4 ,and honey1 and butter1 and sheep1 and fat calves1 and they gave to ,david and the people that were with him1 to eat3 for they suspected that the people were faint with hunger and thirst in the wilderness4 #b ,kings ,chapter #ah ,absalom is defeated1 and slain by ,joab4 ,david mourneth for him4 #ah3a4 ,and ,david1 having reviewed his people1 appointed over them captains of thousands and of hundreds1 #ah3b4 ,and sent forth a third part of the people under the hand of ,joab1 and a third part under the hand of ,abisai the son of ,sarvia ,joab's brother1 and a third part under the hand of ,ethai1 who was of ,geth3 and the king said to the people3 ,i also will go forth with you4 #ah3c4 ,and the people answered3 ,thou shalt not go forth3 for if we flee away1 they will not much mind us3 or if half of us should fall1 they will not greatly care3 for thou alone art accounted for ten thousand3 it is better therefore that thou shouldst be in the city to succour us4 #ah3d4 ,and the king said to them3 ,what seemeth good to you1 that will ,i do4 ,and the king stood by the gate3 and all the people went forth by their troops1 by hundreds and by thousands4 #ah3e4 ,and the king commanded ,joab1 and ,abisai1 and ,ethai1 saying3 ,save me the boy ,absalom4 ,and all the people heard the king giving charge to all the princes concerning ,absalom4 #ah3f4 ,so the people went out into the field against ,israel1 and the battle was fought in the forest of ,ephraim4 #ah3g4 ,and the people of ,israel were defeated there by ,david's army1 and a great slaughter was made that day of twenty thousand men4 #ah3h4 ,and the battle there was scattered over the face of all the country1 and there were many more of the people whom the forest consumed1 than whom the sword devoured that day4 ,consumed444 ,viz41 by pits and precipices4 #ah3i4 ,and it happened that ,absalom met the servants of ,david1 riding on a mule3 and as the mule went under a thick and large oak1 his head stuck in the oak3 and while he hung between the heaven and the earth1 the mule on which he rode passed on4 #ah3aj4 ,and one saw this and told ,joab1 saying3 ,i saw ,absalom hanging upon an oak4 #ah3aa4 ,and ,joab said to the man that told him3 ,if thou sawest him1 why didst thou not stab him to the ground1 and ,i would have given thee ten sicles of silver1 and a belt8 #ah3ab4 ,and he said to ,joab3 ,if thou wouldst have paid down in my hands a thousand pieces of silver1 ,i would not lay my hands upon the king's son for in our hearing the king charged thee1 and ,abisai1 and ,ethai1 saying3 ,save me the boy ,absalom4 #ah3ac4 ,yea and if ,i should have acted boldly against my own life1 this could not have been hid from the king1 and wouldst thou have stood by me8 #ah3ad4 ,and ,joab said3 ,not as thou wilt1 but ,i will set upon him in thy sight4 ,so he took three lances in his hand1 and thrust them into the heart of ,absalom3 and whilst he yet panted for life1 sticking on the oak1 #ah3ae4 ,ten young men1 armourbearers of ,joab1 ran up1 and striking him slew him4 #ah3af4 ,and ,joab sounded the trumpet1 and kept back the people from pursuing after ,israel in their flight1 being willing to spare the multitude4 #ah3ag4 ,and they took ,absalom1 and cast him into a great pit in the forest1 and they laid an exceeding great heap of stones upon him3 but all ,israel fled to their own dwellings4 #ah3ah4 ,now ,absalom had reared up for himself1 in his lifetime1 a pillar1 which is in the king's valley3 for he said3 ,i have no son1 and this shall be the monument of my name4 ,and he called the pillar by his own name1 and it is called the hand of ,absalom1 to this day4 ,no son444 ,the sons mentioned above1 chap4 #ad4bg1 were dead when this pillar was erected3 unless we suppose he raised this pillar before they were born4 #ah3ai4 ,and ,achimaas the son of ,sadoc said3 ,i will run and tell the king1 that the ,lord hath done judgment for him from the hand of his enemies4 #ah3bj4 ,and ,joab said to him3 ,thou shalt not be the messenger this day1 but shalt bear tidings another day3 this day ,i will not have thee bear tidings1 because the king's son is dead4 #ah3ba4 ,and ,joab said to ,chusai3 ,go1 and tell the king what thou hast seen4 ,chusai bowed down to ,joab1 and ran4 #ah3bb4 ,then ,achimaas the son of ,sadoc said to ,joab again3 ,why might not ,i also run after ,chusai8 ,and ,joab said to him3 ,why wilt thou run1 my son8 thou wilt not be the bearer of good tidings4 #ah3bc4 ,he answered3 ,but what if ,i run8 ,and he said to him3 ,run4 ,then ,achimaas running by a nearer way passed ,chusai4 #ah3bd4 ,and ,david sat between the two gates3 and the watchman that was on the top of the gate upon the wall1 lifting up his eyes1 saw a man running alone4 #ah3be4 ,and crying out he told the king3 and the king said3 ,if he be alone1 there are good tidings in his mouth4 ,and as he was coming apace1 and drawing nearer1 #ah3bf4 ,the watchman saw another man running1 and crying aloud from above1 he said3 ,i see another man running alone4 ,and the king said3 ,he also is a good messenger4 #ah3bg4 ,and the watchman said3 ,the running of the foremost seemeth to me like the running of ,achimaas the son of ,sadoc4 ,and the king said3 ,he is a good man3 and cometh with good news4 #ah3bh4 ,and ,achimaas crying out1 said to the king3 ,god save thee1 ,o king4 ,and falling down before the king with his face to the ground1 he said3 ,blessed be the ,lord thy ,god1 who hath shut up the men that have lifted up their hands against the lord my king4 #ah3bi4 ,and the king said3 ,is the young man ,absalom safe8 ,and ,achimaas said3 ,i saw a great tumult1 ,o king1 when thy servant ,joab sent me thy servant3 ,i know nothing else4 #ah3cj4 ,and the king said to him3 ,pass1 and stand here4 #ah3ca4 ,and when he had passed1 and stood still1 ,chusai appeared and coming up he said3 ,i bring good tidings1 my lord1 the king1 for the ,lord hath judged for thee this day from the hand of all that have risen up against thee4 #ah3cb4 ,and the king said to ,chusai3 ,is the young man ,absalom safe8 ,and ,chusai answering him1 said3 ,let the enemies of my lord1 the king1 and all that rise against him unto evil1 be as the young man is4 #ah3cc4 ,the king therefore being much moved1 went up to the high chamber over the gate1 and wept4 ,and as he went he spoke in this manner3 ,my son ,absalom1 ,absalom my son3 would to ,god that ,i might die for thee1 ,absalom my son1 my son ,absalom4 ,would to ,god444 ,david lamented the death of ,absalom1 because of the wretched state in which he died3 and therefore would have been glad to have saved his life1 even by dying for him4 ,in which he was a figure of ,christ weeping1 praying and dying for his rebellious children1 and even for them that crucified him4 #b ,kings ,chapter #ai ,david1 at the remonstrances of ,joab1 ceaseth his mourning4 ,he is invited back and met by ,semei and ,miphiboseth3 a strife between the men of ,juda and the men of ,israel4 #ai3a4 ,and it was told ,joab1 that the king wept and mourned for his son3 #ai3b4 ,and the victory that day was turned into mourning unto all the people3 for the people heard say that day3 ,the king grieveth for his son4 #ai3c4 ,and the people shunned the going into the city that day as a people would do that hath turned their backs1 and fled away from the battle4 #ai3d4 ,and the king covered his head1 and cried with a loud voice3 ,o my son ,absalom1 ,o ,absalom my son1 ,o my son4 #ai3e4 ,then ,joab going into the house to the king1 said3 ,thou hast shamed this day the faces of all thy servants1 that have saved thy life1 and the lives of thy sons1 and of thy daughters1 and the lives of thy wives1 and the lives of thy concubines4 #ai3f4 ,thou lovest them that hate thee1 and thou hatest them that love thee3 and thou hast shewn this day that thou carest not for thy nobles1 nor for thy servants3 and ,i now plainly perceive that if ,absalom had lived1 and all we had been slain1 then it would have pleased thee4 #ai3g4 ,now therefore arise1 and go out1 and speak to the satisfaction of thy servants3 for ,i swear to thee by the ,lord1 that if thou wilt not go forth1 there will not tarry with thee so much as one this night3 and that will be worse to thee1 than all the evils that have befallen thee from thy youth until now4 #ai3h4 ,then the king arose and sat in the gate3 and it was told to all the people that the king sat in the gate3 and all the people came before the king1 but ,israel fled to their own dwellings4 #ai3i4 ,and all the people were at strife in all the tribes of ,israel1 saying3 ,the king delivered us out of the hand of our enemies1 and he saved us out of the hand of the ,philistines3 and now he is fled out of the land for ,absalom4 #ai3aj4 ,but ,absalom1 whom we anointed over us1 is dead in the battle3 how long are you silent1 and bring not back the king8 #ai3aa4 ,and king ,david sent to ,sadoc1 and ,abiathar the priests1 saying3 ,speak to the ancients of ,juda1 saying3 ,why are you the last to bring the king back to his house8 7,for the talk of all ,israel was come to the king in his house47 #ai3ab4 ,you are my brethren1 you are my bone1 and my flesh1 why are you the last to bring back the king8 #ai3ac4 ,and say ye to ,amasa3 ,art not thou my bone1 and my flesh8 ,so do ,god to me and add more1 if thou be not the chief captain of the army before me always in the place of ,joab4 #ai3ad4 ,and he inclined the heart of all the men of ,juda1 as it were of one man3 and they sent to the king1 saying3 ,return thou1 and all thy servants4 #ai3ae4 ,and the king returned and came as far as the ,jordan1 and all ,juda came as far as ,galgal to meet the king1 and to bring him over the ,jordan4 #ai3af4 ,and ,semei the son of ,gera the son of ,jemini of ,bahurim1 made haste and went down with the men of ,juda to meet king ,david1 #ai3ag4 ,with a thousand men of ,benjamin1 and ,siba the servant of the house of ,saul3 and his fifteen sons1 and twenty servants were with him3 and going over the ,jordan1 #ai3ah4 ,they passed the fords before the king1 that they might help over the king's household1 and do according to his commandment4 ,and ,semei the son of ,gera falling down before the king1 when he was come over the ,jordan1 #ai3ai4 ,said to him3 ,impute not to me1 my lord1 the iniquity1 nor remember the injuries of thy servant on the day that thou1 my lord1 the king1 wentest out of ,jerusalem1 nor lay it up in thy heart1 ,o king4 #ai3bj4 ,for ,i thy servant acknowledge my sin3 and therefore ,i am come this day the first of all the house of ,joseph1 and am come down to meet my lord the king4 #ai3ba4 ,but ,abisai the son of ,sarvia answering1 said3 ,shall ,semei for these words not be put to death1 because he cursed the ,lord's anointed8 #ai3bb4 ,and ,david said3 ,what have ,i to do with you1 ye sons of ,sarvia8 why are you a satan this day to me8 shall there any man be killed this day in ,israel8 do not ,i know that this day ,i am made king over ,israel8 #ai3bc4 ,and the king said to ,semei3 ,thou shalt not die4 ,and he swore unto him4 #ai3bd4 ,and ,miphiboseth the son of ,saul came down to meet the king1 and he had neither washed his feet1 nor trimmed his beard3 nor washed his garments from the day that the king went out1 until the day of his return in peace4 #ai3be4 ,and when he met the king at ,jerusalem1 the king said to him3 ,why camest thou not with me1 ,miphiboseth8 #ai3bf4 ,and he answering1 said3 ,my lord1 ,o king1 my servant despised me3 for ,i thy servant spoke to him to saddle me an ass1 that ,i might get on and go with the king3 for ,i thy servant am lame4 #ai3bg4 ,moreover he hath also accused me thy servant to thee1 my lord the king3 but thou my lord the king art as an angel of ,god1 do what pleaseth thee4 #ai3bh4 ,for all of my father's house were no better than worthy of death before my lord the king2 and thou hast set me thy servant among the guests of thy table3 what just complaint therefore have ,i8 or what right to cry any more to the king8 #ai3bi4 ,then the king said to him3 ,why speakest thou any more8 what ,i have said is determined3 thou and ,siba divide the possessions4 #ai3cj4 ,and ,miphiboseth answered the king3 ,yea1 let him take all1 forasmuch as my lord the king is returned peaceably into his house4 #ai3ca4 ,berzellai also the ,galaadite coming down from ,rogelim1 brought the king over the ,jordan1 being ready also to wait on him beyond the river4 #ai3cb4 ,now ,berzellai the ,galaadite was of a great age1 that is to say1 fourscore years old1 and he provided the king with sustenance when he abode in the camp3 for he was a man exceeding rich4 #ai3cc4 ,and the king said to ,berzellai3 ,come with me that thou mayest rest secure with me in ,jerusalem4 #ai3cd4 ,and ,berzellai said to the king3 ,how many are the days of the years of my life1 that ,i should go up with the king to ,jerusalem8 #ai3ce4 ,i am this day fourscore years old1 are my senses quick to discern sweet and bitter8 or can meat or drink delight thy servant8 or can ,i hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women8 why should thy servant be a burden to my lord1 the king8 #ai3cf4 ,i thy servant will go on a little way from the ,jordan with thee3 ,i need not this recompense4 #ai3cg4 ,but ,i beseech thee let thy servant return1 and die in my own city1 and be buried by the sepulchre of my father1 and of my mother4 ,but there is thy servant ,chamaam1 let him go with thee1 my lord1 the king1 and do to him whatsoever seemeth good to thee4 #ai3ch4 ,then the king said to him3 ,let ,chamaam go over with me1 and ,i will do for him whatsoever shall please thee1 and all that thou shalt ask of me1 thou shalt obtain4 #ai3ci4 ,and when all the people and the king had passed over the ,jordan1 the king kissed ,berzellai1 and blessed him3 and he returned to his own place4 #ai3dj4 ,so the king went on to ,galgal1 and ,chamaam with him4 ,now all the people of ,juda had brought the king over1 and only half of the people of ,israel were there4 #ai3da4 ,therefore all the men of ,israel running together to the king1 said to him3 ,why have our brethren the men of ,juda stolen thee away1 and have brought the king and his household over the ,jordan1 and all the men of ,david with him8 #ai3db4 ,and all the men of ,juda answered the men of ,israel3 ,because the king is nearer to me3 why art thou angry for this matter8 have we eaten any thing of the king's1 or have any gifts been given us8 #ai3dc4 ,and the men of ,israel answered the men of ,juda1 and said3 ,i have ten parts in the king more than thou1 and ,david belongeth to me more than to thee3 why hast thou done me a wrong1 and why was it not told me first1 that ,i might bring back my king8 ,and the men of ,juda answered more harshly than the men of ,israel4 #b ,kings ,chapter #bj ,seba's rebellion4 ,amasa is slain by ,joab4 ,abela is besieged1 but upon the citizens casting over the wall the head of ,seba1 ,joab departeth with all his army4 #bj3a4 ,and there happened to be there a man of ,belial1 whose name was ,seba1 the son of ,bochri1 a man of ,jemini3 and he sounded the trumpet1 and said3 ,we have no part in ,david1 nor inheritance in the son of ,isai3 return to thy dwellings1 ,o ,israel4 #bj3b4 ,and all ,israel departed from ,david1 and followed ,seba the son of ,bochri3 but the men of ,juda stuck to their king from the ,jordan unto ,jerusalem4 #bj3c4 ,and when the king was come into his house at ,jerusalem1 he took the ten women his concubines1 whom he had left to keep the house1 and put them inward1 allowing them provisions3 and he went not in unto them1 but they were shut up unto the day of their death living in widowhood4 #bj3d4 ,and the king said to ,amasa3 ,assemble to me all the men of ,juda against the third day1 and be thou here present4 #bj3e4 ,so ,amasa went to assemble the men of ,juda1 but he tarried beyond the set time which the king had appointed him4 #bj3f4 ,and ,david said to ,abisai3 ,now will ,seba the son of ,bochri do us more harm than did ,absalom3 take thou therefore the servants of thy lord1 and pursue after him1 lest he find fenced cities1 and escape us4 #bj3g4 ,so ,joab's men went out with him1 and the ,cerethi and the ,phelethi3 and all the valiant men went out of ,jerusalem to pursue after ,seba the son of ,bochri4 #bj3h4 ,and when they were at the great stone which is in ,gabaon1 ,amasa coming met them4 ,and ,joab had on a close coat of equal length with his habit1 and over it was girded with a sword hanging down to his flank1 in a scabbard1 made in such manner as to come out with the least motion and strike4 #bj3i4 ,and ,joab said to ,amasa3 ,god save thee1 my brother4 ,and he took ,amasa by the chin with his right hand to kiss him4 #bj3aj4 ,but ,amasa did not take notice of the sword1 which ,joab had1 and he struck him in the side1 and shed out his bowels to the ground1 and gave him not a second wound1 and he died4 ,and ,joab1 and ,abisai his brother pursued after ,seba the son of ,bochri4 #bj3aa4 ,in the mean time some men of ,joab's company stopping at the dead body of ,amasa1 said3 ,behold he that would have been in ,joab's stead the companion of ,david4 #bj3ab4 ,and ,amasa imbrued with blood1 lay in the midst of the way4 ,a certain man saw this that all the people stood still to look upon him1 so he removed ,amasa out of the highway into the field1 and covered him with a garment1 that they who passed might1 not stop on his account4 #bj3ac4 ,and when he was removed out of the way1 all the people went on following ,joab to pursue after ,seba the son of ,bochri4 #bj3ad4 ,now he had passed through all the tribes of ,israel unto ,abela and ,bethmaacha3 and all the chosen men were gathered together unto him4 ,abela and ,bethmaacha444 ,cities of the tribe of ,nephtali4 #bj3ae4 ,and they came1 and besieged him in ,abela1 and in ,bethmaacha1 and they cast up works round the city1 and the city was besieged3 and all the people that were with ,joab1 laboured to throw down the walls4 #bj3af4 ,and a wise woman cried out from the city3 ,hear1 hear1 and say to ,joab3 ,come near hither1 and ,i will speak with thee4 #bj3ag4 ,and when he was come near to her1 she said to him3 ,art thou ,joab8 ,and he answered3 ,i am4 ,and she spoke thus to him3 ,hear the words of thy handmaid4 ,he answered3 ,i do hear4 #bj3ah4 ,and she again said3 ,a saying was used in the old proverb3 ,they that inquire1 let them inquire in ,abela3 and so they made an end4 #bj3ai4 ,am not ,i she that answer truth in ,israel1 and thou seekest to destroy the city1 and to overthrow a mother in ,israel8 ,why wilt thou throw down the inheritance of the ,lord8 #bj3bj4 ,and ,joab answering said3 ,god forbid1 ,god forbid that ,i should1 ,i do not throw down1 nor destroy4 #bj3ba4 ,the matter is not so1 but a man of mount ,ephraim1 ,seba the son of ,bochri by name1 hath lifted up his hand against king ,david3 deliver him only1 and we will depart from the city4 ,and the woman said to ,joab3 ,behold his head shall be thrown to thee from the wall4 #bj3bb4 ,so she went to all the people1 and spoke to them wisely3 and they cut off the head of ,seba the son of ,bochri1 and cast it out to ,joab4 ,and he sounded the trumpet1 and they departed from the city1 every one to their home3 and ,joab returned to ,jerusalem to the king4 #bj3bc4 ,so ,joab was over all the army of ,israel3 and ,banaias the son of ,joiada was over the ,cerethites and ,phelethites1 #bj3bd4 ,but ,aduram over the tributes3 and ,josaphat the son of ,ahilud was recorder4 #bj3be4 ,and ,siva was scribe3 and ,sadoc and ,abiathar1 priests4 #bj3bf4 ,and ,ira the ,jairite was the priest of ,david4 #b ,kings ,chapter #ba ,a famine of three years1 for the sin of ,saul against the ,gabaonites1 at whose desire seven of ,saul's race are crucified4 ,war again with the ,philistines4 #ba3a4 ,and there was a famine in the days of ,david for three years successively3 and ,david consulted the oracle of the ,lord4 ,and the ,lord said3 ,it is for ,saul1 and his bloody house1 because he slow the ,gabaonites4 #ba3b4 ,then the king1 calling for the ,gabaonites1 said to them3 7,now the ,gabaonites were not of the children of ,israel1 but the remains of the ,amorrhites3 and the children of ,israel had sworn to them1 and ,saul sought to slay them out of zeal1 as it were for the children of ,israel and ,juda37 #ba3c4 ,david therefore said to the ,gabaonites3 ,what shall ,i do for you8 and what shall be the atonement or you1 that you may bless the inheritance of the ,lord8 #ba3d4 ,and the ,gabaonites said to him3 ,we have no contest about silver and gold1 but against ,saul and against his house3 neither do we desire that any man be slain of ,israel4 ,and the king said to them3 ,what will you then that ,i should do for you8 #ba3e4 ,and they said to the king3 ,the man that crushed us and oppressed us unjustly1 we must destroy in such manner that there be not so much as one left of his stock in all the coasts of ,israel4 #ba3f4 ,let seven men of his children be delivered unto us1 that we may crucify them to the ,lord in ,gabaa of ,saul1 once the chosen of the ,lord4 ,and the king said3 ,i will give them4 #ba3g4 ,and the king spared ,miphiboseth the son of ,jonathan the son of ,saul1 because of the oath of the ,lord1 that had been between ,david and ,jonathan the son of ,saul4 #ba3h4 ,so the king took the two sons of ,respha the daughter of ,aia1 whom she bore to ,saul1 ,armoni1 and ,miphiboseth3 and the five sons of ,michol the daughter of ,saul1 whom she bore to ,hadriel the son of ,berzellai1 that was of ,molathi3 ,of ,michol444 ,they were the sons of ,merob1 who was married to ,hadriel3 but they are here called the sons of ,michol1 because she adopted them1 and brought them up as her own4 #ba3i4 ,and gave them into the hands of the ,gabaonites3 and they crucified them on a hill before the ,lord3 and these seven died together in the first days of the harvest1 when the barley began to be reaped4 #ba3aj4 ,and ,respha the daughter of ,aia took haircloth1 and spread it under her upon the rock from the beginning of the harvest1 till water dropped upon them out of heaven3 and suffered neither the birds to tear them by day1 nor the beasts by night4 #ba3aa4 ,and it was told ,david1 what ,respha the daughter of ,aia1 the concubine of ,saul1 had done4 #ba3ab4 ,and ,david went1 and took the bones of ,saul1 and the bones of ,jonathan his son from the men of ,jabes ,galaad1 who had stolen them from the street of ,bethsan1 where the ,philistines had hanged them when they had slain ,saul in ,gelboe4 #ba3ac4 ,and he brought from thence the bones of ,saul1 and the bones of ,jonathan his son1 and they gathered up the bones of them that were crucified1 #ba3ad4 ,and they buried them with the bones of ,saul1 and of ,jonathan his son in the land of ,benjamin1 in the side1 in the sepulchre of ,cis his father3 and they did all that the king had commanded1 and ,god shewed mercy again to the land after these things4 #ba3ae4 ,and the ,philistines made war again against ,israel1 and ,david went down1 and his servants with him1 and fought against the ,philistines4 ,and ,david growing faint1 #ba3af4 ,jesbibenob1 who was of the race of ,arapha1 the iron of whose spear weighed three hundred ounces1 being girded with a new sword1 attempted to kill ,david4 #ba3ag4 ,and ,abisai the son of ,sarvia rescued him1 and striking the ,philistine killed him4 ,then ,david's men swore unto him saying3 ,thou shalt go no more out with us to battle1 lest thou put out the lamp of ,israel4 #ba3ah4 ,there was also a second battle in ,gob against the ,philistines3 then ,sobochai of ,husathi slew ,saph of the race of ,arapha of the family of the giants4 #ba3ai4 ,and there was a third battle in ,gob against the ,philistines1 in which ,adeodatus the son of the ,forrest an embroiderer of ,bethlehem slew ,goliath the ,gethite1 the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver's beam4 ,adeodatus the son of the ,forrest444 ,so it is rendered in the ,latin ,vulgate1 by giving the interpretation of the ,hebrew names1 which are ,elhanan the son of ,jaare4 #ba3bj4 ,a fourth battle was in ,geth3 where there was a man of great stature1 that had six fingers on each hand1 and six toes on each foot1 four and twenty in all1 and he was of the race of ,arapha4 #ba3ba4 ,and he reproached ,israel3 and ,jonathan the son of ,samae the brother of ,david slew him4 #ba3bb4 ,these four were born of ,arapha in ,geth1 and they fell by the hand of ,david1 and of his servants4 #b ,kings ,chapter #bb ,king ,david's psalm of thanksgiving for his deliverance from all his enemies4 #bb3a4 ,and ,david spoke to the ,lord the words of this canticle1 in the day that the ,lord delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies1 and out of the hand of ,saul1 #bb3b4 ,and he said3 ,the ,lord is my rock1 and my strength1 and my saviour4 #bb3c4 ,god is my strong one1 in him will ,i trust3 my shield1 and the horn of my salvation3 he lifteth me up1 and is my refuge3 my saviour1 thou wilt deliver me from iniquity4 #bb3d4 ,i will call on the ,lord who is worthy to be praised3 and ,i shall be saved from my enemies4 #bb3e4 ,for the pangs of death have surrounded me3 the floods of ,belial have made me afraid4 #bb3f4 ,the cords of hell compassed me3 the snares of death prevented me4 #bb3g4 ,in my distress ,i will call upon the ,lord1 and ,i will cry to my ,god3 and he will hear my voice out of his temple1 and my cry shall come to his ears4 #bb3h4 ,the earth shook and trembled1 the foundations of the mountains were moved1 and shaken1 because he was angry with them4 #bb3i4 ,a smoke went up from his nostrils1 and a devouring fire out of his mouth3 coals were kindled by it4 #bb3aj4 ,he bowed the heavens1 and came down3 and darkness was under his feet4 #bb3aa4 ,and he rode upon the cherubims1 and flew3 and slid upon the wings of the wind4 #bb3ab4 ,he made darkness a covering round about him3 dropping waters out of the clouds of the heavens4 #bb3ac4 ,by the brightness before him1 the coals of fire were kindled4 #bb3ad4 ,the ,lord shall thunder from heaven3 and the most high shall give forth his voice4 #bb3ae4 ,he shot arrows and scattered them3 lightning1 and consumed them4 #bb3af4 ,and the overflowings of the sea appeared1 and the foundations of the world were laid open at the rebuke of the ,lord1 at the blast of the spirit of his wrath4 #bb3ag4 ,he sent from on high1 and took me1 and drew me out of many waters4 #bb3ah4 ,he delivered me from my most mighty enemy1 and from them that hated me3 for they were too strong for me4 #bb3ai4 ,he prevented me in the day of my affliction1 and the ,lord became my stay4 #bb3bj4 ,and he brought me forth into a large place1 he delivered me1 because ,i pleased him4 #bb3ba4 ,the ,lord will reward me according to my justice3 and according to the cleanness of my hands he will render to me4 #bb3bb4 ,because ,i have kept the ways of the ,lord1 and have not wickedly departed from my ,god4 #bb3bc4 ,for all his judgments are in my sight3 and his precepts ,i have not removed from me4 #bb3bd4 ,and ,i shall be perfect with him3 and shall keep myself from my iniquity4 #bb3be4 ,and the ,lord will recompense me according to my justice3 and according to the cleanness of my hands in the sight of his eyes4 #bb3bf4 ,with the holy one thou wilt be holy3 and with the valiant perfect4 #bb3bg4 ,with the elect thou wilt be elect3 and with the perverse thou wilt be perverted4 #bb3bh4 ,and the poor people thou wilt save3 and with thy eyes thou shalt humble the haughty4 #bb3bi4 ,for thou art my lamp ,o ,lord3 and thou1 ,o ,lord1 wilt enlighten my darkness4 #bb3cj4 ,for in thee ,i will run girded3 in my ,god ,i will leap over the wall4 #bb3ca4 ,god1 his way is immaculate1 the word of the ,lord is tried by fire3 he is the like the feet of harts1 and setting me upon my high places4 #bb3ce4 ,he teacheth my hands to war3 and maketh my arms like a bow of brass4 #bb3cf4 ,thou hast given me the shield of my salvation3 and thy mildness hath multiplied me4 #bb3cg4 ,thou shalt enlarge my steps under me3 and my ankles shall not fail4 #bb3ch4 ,i will pursue after my enemies1 and crush them3 and will not return again till ,i consume them4 #bb3ci4 ,i will consume them and break them in pieces1 so that they shall not rise3 they shall fall under my feet4 #bb3dj4 ,thou hast girded me with strength to battle3 thou hast made the wicked man thou shalt deliver me4 #bb3ej4 ,therefore will ,i give thanks to thee1 ,o ,lord1 among the ,gentiles1 and will sing to thy name4 #bb3ea4 ,giving great salvation to his king1 and shewing mercy to ,david his anointed1 and to his seed for ever4 #b ,kings ,chapter #bc ,the last words of ,david4 ,a catalogue of his valiant men4 #bc3a4 ,now these are ,david's last words4 ,david the son of ,isai said3 ,the man to whom it was appointed concerning the ,christ of the ,god of ,jacob1 the excellent psalmist of ,israel said3 #bc3b4 ,the spirit of the ,lord hath spoken by me and his word by my tongue4 #bc3c4 ,the ,god of ,israel said to me1 the strong one of ,israel spoke1 the ruler of men1 the just ruler in the fear of ,god4 #bc3d4 ,as the light of the morning1 when the sun riseth1 shineth in the morning without clouds1 and as the grass springeth out of the earth by rain4 ,as the light1 etc444 ,so shall be the kingdom of ,christ4 #bc3e4 ,neither is my house so great with ,god1 that he should make with me an eternal covenant1 firm in all things and assured4 ,for he is all my salvation1 and all my will3 neither is there ought thereof that springeth not up4 ,neither is my house1 etc444 ,as if he should say3 ,this everlasting covenant was not due to my house3 but purely owing to his bounty2 who is all my salvation1 and my will3 that is1 who hath always saved me1 and granted me what ,i beseeched of him2 so that ,i and my house1 through his blessing1 have sprung up1 and succeeded in all things4 #bc3f4 ,but transgressors shall all of them be plucked up as thorns3 which are not taken away with hands4 #bc3g4 ,and if a man will touch them1 he must be armed with iron and with the staff of a lance3 but they shall be set on fire and burnt to nothing4 #bc3h4 ,these are the names of the valiant men of ,david3 ,jesbaham sitting in the chair was the wisest chief among the three1 he was like the most tender little worm of the wood1 who killed eight hundred men at one onset4 ,jesbaham444 ,the son of ,hachamoni4 ,for this was the name of this hero1 as appears from #a ,chron4 or ,paralip4 #aa4-;,ibid4 ,most tender1 etc444 ,he appeared like one tender and weak1 but was indeed most valiant and strong4 ,it seems the ,latin has here given the interpretation of the ,hebrew name of the hero1 to whom ,jesbaham was like1 instead of the name itself1 which was ,adino the ,eznite1 one much renowned of old for his valour4 #bc3i4 ,after him was ,eleazar the son of ,dodo the ,ahohite1 one of the three valiant men that were with ,david when they defied the ,philistines1 and they were there gathered together to battle4 ,dodo444 ,in ,latin1 ,patrui ejus1 which is the interpretation of the ,hebrew name ,dodo4 ,the same occurs in ver4 #bd4 #bc3aj4 ,and when the men of ,israel were gone away1 he stood and smote the ,philistines till his hand was weary1 and grew stiff with the sword3 and the ,lord wrought a great victory that day3 and the people that were fled away1 returned to take spoils of them that were slain4 #bc3aa4 ,and after him was ,semma the son of ,age of ,arari4 ,and the ,philistines were gathered together in a troop3 for there was a field full of lentils4 ,and when the people were fled from the face of the ,philistines1 #bc3ab4 ,he stood in the midst of the field1 and defended it1 and defeated the ,philistines3 and the ,lord gave a great victory4 #bc3ac4 ,moreover also before this the three who were princes among the thirty1 went down and came to ,david in the harvest time into the cave of ,odollam3 and the camp of the ,philistines was in the valley of the giants4 #bc3ad4 ,and ,david was then in a hold3 and there was a garrison of the ,philistines then in ,bethlehem4 #bc3ae4 ,and ,david longed1 and said3 ,o that some man would get me a drink of the water out of the cistern1 that is in ,bethlehem1 by the gate4 #bc3af4 ,and the three valiant men broke through the camp of the ,philistines1 and drew water out of the cistern of ,bethlehem1 that was by the gate1 and brought it to ,david3 but he would not drink1 but offered it to the ,lord1 #bc3ag4 ,saying3 ,the ,lord be merciful to me1 that ,i may not do this3 shall ,i drink the blood of these men that went1 and the peril of their lives8 therefore he would not drink4 ,these things did these three mighty men4 #bc3ah4 ,abisai also the brother of ,joab1 the son of ,sarvia1 was chief among three3 and he lifted up his spear against three hundred whom he slew1 and he was renowned among the three1 #bc3ai4 ,and the noblest of three1 and was their chief1 but to the three first he attained not4 #bc3bj4 ,and ,banaias the son of ,joiada a most valiant man1 of great deeds1 of ,cabseel3 he slew the two lions of ,moab1 and he went down1 and slew a lion in the midst of a pit1 in the time of snow4 #bc3ba4 ,he also slew an ,egyptian1 a man worthy to be a sight1 having a spear in his hand3 but he went down to him with a rod1 and forced the spear out of the hand of the ,egyptian1 and slew him with his own spear4 #bc3bb4 ,these things did ,banaias the son of ,joiada4 #bc3bc4 ,and he was renowned among the three valiant men1 who were the most honourable among the thirty3 but he attained not to the first three3 and ,david made him of his privy council4 #bc3bd4 ,asael the brother of ,joab was one of the thirty1 ,elehanan the son of ,dodo of ,bethlehem4 #bc3be4 ,semma of ,harodi1 ,elica of ,harodi1 #bc3bf4 ,heles of ,phalti1 ,hira the son of ,acces of ,thecua1 #bc3bg4 ,abiezer of ,anathoth1 ,mobonnai of ,husati1 #bc3bh4 ,selmon the ,ahohite1 ,maharai the ,netophathite1 #bc3bi4 ,heled the son of ,baana1 also a ,netophathite1 ,ithai the son of ,ribai of ,gabaath of the children of ,benjamin1 #bc3cj4 ,banaia the ,pharathonite1 ,heddai of the torrent ,gaas1 #bc3ca4 ,abialbon the ,arbathite1 ,azmaveth of ,beromi1 #bc3cb4 ,eliaba of ,salaboni4 ,the sons of ,jassen1 ,jonathan1 #bc3cc4 ,semma of ,orori1 ,aliam the son of ,sarar the ,arorite1 #bc3cd4 ,eliphelet the son of ,aasbai the son of ,machati1 ,eliam the son of ,achitophel the ,gelonite1 #bc3ce4 ,hesrai of ,carmel1 ,pharai of ,arbi1 #bc3cf4 ,igaal the son of ,nathan of ,soba1 ,bonni of ,gadi1 #bc3cg4 ,selec of ,ammoni1 ,naharai the ,berothite1 armourbearer of ,joab the son of ,sarvia1 #bc3ch4 ,ira the ,jethrite1 ,gareb also a ,jethrite2 #bc3ci4 ,urias the ,hethite1 thirty and seven in all4 #b ,kings ,chapter #bd ,david numbereth the people3 ,god sendeth a pestilence1 which is stopt by ,david's prayer and sacrifice4 #bd3a4 ,and the anger of the ,lord was again kindled against ,israel1 and stirred up ,david among them1 saying3 ,go1 number ,israel and ,juda4 ,stirred up1 etc444 ,this stirring up was not the doing of ,god1 but of ,satan2 as it is expressly declared1 #a ,chron4 or ,paralip4 #ba4a4 #bd3b4 ,and the king said to ,joab the general of his army3 ,go through all the tribes of ,israel from ,dan to ,bersabee1 and number ye the people that ,i may know the number of them4 #bd3c4 ,and ,joab said to the king3 ,the ,lord thy ,god increase thy people1 and make them as many more as they are now1 and again multiply them a hundredfold in the sight of my lord the king3 but what meaneth my lord the king by this kind of thing8 #bd3d4 ,but the king's words prevailed over the words of ,joab1 and of the captains of the army3 and ,joab1 and the captains of the soldiers went out from the presence of the king1 to number the people of ,israel4 #bd3e4 ,and when they had passed the ,jordan1 they came to ,aroer to the right side of the city1 which is in the vale of ,gad4 #bd3f4 ,and by ,jazer they passed into ,galaad1 and to the lower land of ,hodsi1 and they came into the woodlands of ,dan4 ,and going about by ,sidon1 #bd3g4 ,they passed near the walls of ,tyre1 and all the land of the ,hevite1 and the ,chanaanite1 and they came to the south of ,juda into ,bersabee3 #bd3h4 ,and having gone through the whole land1 after nine months and twenty days1 they came to ,jerusalem4 #bd3i4 ,and ,joab gave up the sum of the number of the people to the king1 and there were found of ,israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword3 and of ,juda five hundred thousand fighting men4 #bd3aj4 ,but ,david's heart struck him1 after the people were numbered3 and ,david said to the ,lord3 ,i have sinned very much in what ,i have done3 but ,i pray thee1 ,o ,lord1 to take away the iniquity of thy servant1 because ,i have done exceeding foolishly4 ,david's heart struck him1 after the people were numbered444 ,that is he was touched with a great remorse for the vanity and pride which had put him upon numbering the people4 #bd3aa4 ,and ,david arose in the morning1 and the word of the ,lord came to ,gad the prophet and the seer of ,david1 saying3 #bd3ab4 ,go1 and say to ,david3 ,thus saith the ,lord3 ,i give thee thy choice of three things1 choose one of them which thou wilt1 that ,i may do it to thee4 #bd3ac4 ,and when ,gad was come to ,david1 he told him1 saying3 ,either seven years of famine shall come to thee in thy land3 or thou shalt flee three months before thy adversaries1 and they shall pursue thee3 or for three days there shall be a pestilence in thy land4 ,now therefore deliberate1 and see what answer ,i shall return to him that sent me4 #bd3ad4 ,and ,david said to ,gad3 ,i am in a great strait3 but it is better that ,i should fall into the hands of the ,lord 7for his mercies are many7 than into the hands of men4 #bd3ae4 ,and the ,lord sent a pestilence upon ,israel1 from the morning unto the time appointed1 and there died of the people from ,dan to ,bersabee seventy thousand men4 #bd3af4 ,and when the angel of the ,lord had stretched out his hand over ,jerusalem to destroy it1 the ,lord had pity on the affliction1 and said to the angel that slew the people3 ,it is enough3 now hold thy hand4 ,and the angel of the ,lord was by the thrashingfloor of ,areuna the ,jebusite4 #bd3ag4 ,and ,david said to the ,lord1 when he saw the angel striking the people3 ,it is ,i2 ,i am he that have sinned1 ,i have done wickedly3 these that are the sheep1 what have they done8 let thy hand1 ,i beseech thee1 be turned against me1 and against my father's house4 #bd3ah4 ,and ,gad came to ,david that day1 and said3 ,go up1 and build an altar to the ,lord in the thrashingfloor of ,areuna the ,jebusite4 #bd3ai4 ,and ,david went up according to the word of ,gad which the ,lord had commanded him4 #bd3bj4 ,and ,areuna looked1 and saw the king and his servants coming towards him3 #bd3ba4 ,and going out he worshipped the king1 bowing with his face to the earth1 and said3 ,wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant8 ,and ,david said to him3 ,to buy the thrashingfloor of thee1 and build an altar to the ,lord1 that the plague1 which rageth among the people1 may cease4 #bd3bb4 ,and ,areuna said to ,david3 ,let my lord the king take1 and offer1 as it seemeth good to him3 thou hast here oxen for a holocaust1 and the wain1 and the yokes of the oxen for wood4 #bd3bc4 ,all these things ,areuna as a king gave to the king3 and ,areuna said to the king3 ,the ,lord thy ,god receive thy vow4 #bd3bd4 ,and the king answered him1 and said3 ,nay1 but ,i will buy it of thee1 at a price1 and ,i will not offer to the ,lord my ,god holocausts free cost4 ,so ,david bought the floor1 and the oxen1 for fifty sicles of silver3 #bd3be4 ,and ,david built there an altar to the ,lord1 and offered holocausts and peace offerings3 and the ,lord became merciful to the land1 and the plague was stayed from ,israel4
