called by the ,hebrews the books of ,samuel1 because they contain the history of ,samuel1 and of the two kings1 ,saul and ,david1 whom he anointed4 ,they are more commonly named by the ,fathers1 the first and second book of kings4 ,as to the writer of them1 it is the common opinion that ,samuel composed the first book1 as far as the twenty-fifth chapter2 and that the prophets ,nathan and ,gad finished the first1 and wrote the second book4 ,see #a ,paralipomenon1 alias #a ,chronicles1 #bi4bi4 #a ,kings ,chapter #a ,anna the wife of ,elcana being barren1 by vow and prayer obtaineth a son3 whom she calleth ,samuel3 and presenteth him to the service of ,god in ,silo1 according to her vow3 #a3a4 ,there was a man of ,ramathaimsophim1 of ,mount ,ephraim1 and his name was ,elcana1 the son of ,jeroham1 the son of ,eliu1 the son of ,thohu1 the son of ,suph1 an ,ephraimite3 ,an ,ephraimite444 ,he was of the tribe of ,levi1 #a4 ,par4 #f4cd1 but is called an ,ephraimite from dwelling in mount ,ephraim4 #a3b4 ,and he had two wives1 the name of one was ,anna1 and the name of the other ,phenenna4 ,phenenna had children3 but ,anna had no children4 #a3c4 ,and this man went up out of his city upon the appointed days1 to adore and to offer sacrifice to the ,lord of hosts in ,silo4 ,and the two sons of ,heli1 ,ophni and ,phinees1 were there priests of the ,lord4 #a3d4 ,now the day came1 and ,elcana offered sacrifice1 and gave to ,phenenna1 his wife1 and to all her sons and daughters1 portions3 #a3e4 ,but to ,anna he gave one portion with sorrow1 because he loved ,anna4 ,and the ,lord had shut up her womb4 #a3f4 ,her rival also afflicted her1 and troubled her exceedingly1 insomuch that she upbraided her1 that the ,lord had shut up her womb3 #a3g4 ,and thus she did every year1 when the time returned1 that they went up to the temple of the ,lord3 and thus she provoked her3 but ,anna wept1 and did not eat4 #a3h4 ,then ,elcana1 her husband1 said to her3 ,anna1 why weepest thou8 and why dost thou not eat8 and why dost thou afflict thy heart8 ,am not ,i better to thee than ten children8 #a3i4 ,so ,anna arose after she had eaten and drunk in ,silo3 ,and ,heli1 the priest1 sitting upon a stool before the door of the temple of the ,lord2 #a3aj4 ,as ,anna had her heart full of grief1 she prayed to the ,lord1 shedding many tears1 #a3aa4 ,and she made a vow1 saying3 ,o ,lord of hosts1 if thou wilt look down1 and wilt be mindful of me1 and not forget thy handmaid1 and wilt give to thy servant a manchild3 ,i will give him to the ,lord all the days of his life1 and no razor shall come upon his head4 #a3ab4 ,and it came to pass1 as she multiplied prayers before the ,lord1 that ,heli observed her mouth4 #a3ac4 ,now ,anna spoke in her heart1 and only her lips moved1 but her voice was not heard at all4 ,heli therefore thought her to be drunk1 #a3ad4 ,and said to her3 ,how long wilt thou be drunk8 digest a little the wine1 of which thou hast taken too much4 #a3ae4 ,anna answering1 said3 ,not so1 my lord3 for ,i am an exceeding unhappy woman1 and have drunk neither wine nor any strong drink1 but ,i have poured out my soul before the ,lord4 #a3af4 ,count not thy handmaid for one of the daughters of ,belial3 for out of the abundance of my sorrow and grief have ,i spoken till now4 #a3ag4 ,then ,heli said to her3 ,go in peace3 and the ,god of ,israel grant thee thy petition1 which thou hast asked of him4 #a3ah4 ,and she said3 ,would to ,god thy handmaid may find grace in thy eyes4 ,so the woman went on her way1 and ate1 and her countenance was no more changed4 #a3ai4 ,and they rose in the morning1 and worshipped before the ,lord3 and they returned1 and came into their house at ,ramatha4 ,and ,elcana knew ,anna his wife3 ,and the ,lord remembered her4 #a3bj4 ,and it came to pass when the time was come about1 ,anna conceived and bore a son1 and called his name ,samuel3 because she had asked him of the ,lord4 ,samuel444 ,this name imports1 asked of ,god4 #a3ba4 ,and ,elcana1 her husband1 went up1 and all his house1 to offer to the ,lord the solemn sacrifice1 and his vow4 #a3bb4 ,but ,anna went not up3 for she said to her husband3 ,i will not go till the child be weaned1 and till ,i may carry him1 that he may appear before the ,lord1 and may abide always there4 #a3bc4 ,and ,elcana1 her husband1 said to her3 ,do what seemeth good to thee1 and stay till thou wean him3 and ,i pray that the ,lord may fulfil his word4 ,so the woman staid at home1 and gave her son suck1 till she weaned him4 #a3bd4 ,and after she had weaned him1 she carried him with her1 with three calves1 and three bushels of flour1 and a bottle of wine1 and she brought him to the house of the ,lord in ,silo4 ,now the child was as yet very young3 #a3be4 ,and they immolated a calf1 and offered the child to ,heli4 #a3bf4 ,and ,anna said3 ,i beseech thee1 my lord1 as thy soul liveth1 my lord3 ,i am that woman1 who stood before thee here praying to the ,lord4 #a3bg4 ,for this child did ,i pray1 and the ,lord hath granted me my petition1 which ,i asked of him4 #a3bh4 ,therefore ,i also have lent him to the ,lord all the days of his life1 he shall be lent to the ,lord4 ,and they adored the ,lord there4 ,and ,anna prayed1 and said3 #a ,kings ,chapter #b ,the canticle of ,anna4 ,the wickedness of the sons of ,heli3 for which they are not duly corrected by their father4 ,a prophecy against the house of ,heli4 #b3a4 ,my heart hath rejoiced in the ,lord1 and my horn is exalted in my ,god3 my mouth is enlarged over my enemies3 because ,i have joyed in thy salvation4 ,my horn444 ,the horn in the scriptures signifies strength1 power1 the horn is said to be exalted1 when a person receives an increase of strength or glory4 #b3b4 ,there is none holy as the ,lord is3 for there is no other beside thee1 and there is none strong like our ,god4 #b3c4 ,do not multiply to speak lofty things1 boasting3 let old matters depart from your mouth3 for the ,lord is a ,god of all knowledge1 and to him are thoughts prepared4 #b3d4 ,the bow of the mighty is overcome1 and the weak are girt with strength4 #b3e4 ,they that were full before1 have hired out themselves for bread3 and the hungry are filled1 so that the barren hath borne many3 and she that had many children is weakened4 #b3f4 ,the ,lord killeth and maketh alive1 he bringeth down to hell1 and bringeth back again4 #b3g4 ,the ,lord maketh poor and maketh rich1 he humbleth and he exalteth3 #b3h4 ,he raiseth up the needy from the dust1 and lifteth up the poor from the dunghill3 that he may sit with princes1 and hold the throne of glory4 ,for the poles of the earth are the ,lord's1 and upon them he hath set the world4 #b3i4 ,he will keep the feet of his saints1 and the wicked shall be silent in darkness2 because no man shall prevail by his own strength4 #b3aj4 ,the adversaries of the ,lord shall fear him3 and upon them shall he thunder in the heavens3 ,the ,lord shall judge the ends of the earth1 and he shall give empire to his king1 and shall exalt the horn of his ,christ4 #b3aa4 ,and ,elcana went to ,ramatha1 to his house3 but the child ministered in the sight of the ,lord before the face of ,heli the priest4 #b3ab4 ,now the sons of ,heli were children of ,belial1 not knowing the ,lord1 #b3ac4 ,nor the office of the priests to the people3 but whosoever had offered a sacrifice1 the servant of the priest came1 while the flesh was in boiling1 with a fleshhook of three teeth in his hand1 #b3ad4 ,and thrust it into the kettle1 or into the cauldron1 or into the pot1 or into the pan3 and all that the fleshhook brought up1 the priest took to himself4 ,thus did they to all ,israel that came to ,silo4 #b3ae4 ,also before they burnt the fat1 the servant of the priest came1 and said to the man that sacrificed3 ,give me flesh to boil for the priest3 for ,i will not take of thee sodden flesh1 but raw4 #b3af4 ,and he that sacrificed said to him3 ,let the fat first be burnt to day1 according to the custom1 and then take to thee as much as thy soul desireth4 ,but he answered1 and said to him3 ,not so3 but thou shalt give it me now1 or else ,i will take it by force4 #b3ag4 ,wherefore the sin of the young men was exceeding great before the ,lord3 because they withdrew men from the sacrifice of the ,lord4 #b3ah4 ,but ,samuel ministered before the face of the ,lord3 being a child girded with a linen ephod4 #b3ai4 ,and his mother made him a little coat1 which she brought to him on the appointed days1 when she went up with her husband1 to offer the solemn sacrifice4 #b3bj4 ,and ,heli blessed ,elcana and his wife3 and he said to him3 ,the ,lord give thee seed of this woman1 for the loan thou hast lent to the ,lord4 ,and they went to their own home4 #b3ba4 ,and the ,lord visited ,anna1 and she conceived1 and bore three sons1 and two daughters3 and the child ,samuel became great before the ,lord4 #b3bb4 ,now ,heli was very old1 and he heard all that his sons did to all ,israel3 and how they lay with the women that waited at the door of the tabernacle3 #b3bc4 ,and he said to them3 ,why do ye these kinds of things1 which ,i hear1 very wicked things1 from all the people8 #b3bd4 ,do not so1 my sons3 for it is no good report that ,i hear1 that you make the people of the ,lord to transgress4 #b3be4 ,if one man shall sin against another1 ,god may be appeased in his behalf3 but if a man shall sin against the ,lord1 who shall pray for him8 ,and they hearkened not to the voice of their father1 because the ,lord would slay them4 ,who shall pray for him444 ,by this word ,heli would have his sons understand1 that by their wicked abuse of sacred things1 and of the very sacrifices which were appointed to appease the ,lord1 they deprived themselves of the ordinary means of reconciliation with ,god2 which was by sacrifices4 ,the more1 because they were the chief priests whose business it was to intercede for all others1 they had no other to offer sacrifices and to make atonement for them4 ,ibid4 ,because the ,lord would slay them444 ,in consequence of their manifold sacrileges1 he would not soften their hearts with his efficacious grace1 but was determined to destroy them4 #b3bf4 ,but the child ,samuel advanced1 and grew on1 and pleased both the ,lord and men4 #b3bg4 ,and there came a man of ,god to ,heli1 and said to him3 ,thus saith the ,lord3 ,did ,i not plainly appear to thy father's house1 when they were in ,egypt in the house of ,pharao8 #b3bh4 ,and ,i chose him out of all the tribes of ,israel to be my priest1 to go up to my altar1 and burn incense to me1 and to wear the ephod before me3 and ,i gave to thy father's house of all the sacrifices of the children of ,israel4 #b3bi4 ,why have you kicked away my victims1 and my gifts which ,i commanded to be offered in the temple3 and thou hast rather honoured thy sons than me1 to eat the firstfruits of every sacrifice of my people ,israel8 #b3cj4 ,wherefore thus saith the ,lord the ,god of ,israel3 ,i said indeed that thy house1 and the house of thy father1 should minister in my sight1 for ever4 ,but now saith the ,lord3 ,far be this from me3 but whosoever shall glorify me1 him will ,i glorify3 but they that despise me1 shall be despised4 #b3ca4 ,behold the days come3 and ,i will cut off thy arm1 and the arm of thy father's house1 that there shall not be an old man in thy house4 #b3cb4 ,and thou shalt see thy rival in the temple1 in all the prosperity of ,israel1 and there shall not be an old man in thy house for ever4 ,thy rival444 ,a priest of another race4 ,this was partly fulfilled1 when ,abiathar1 of the race of ,heli1 was removed from the priesthood1 and ,sadoc1 who was of another line1 was substituted in his place4 ,but it was more fully accomplished in the ,new ,testament1 when the priesthood of ,aaron gave place to that of ,christ4 #b3cc4 ,however1 ,i will not altogether take away a man of thee from my altar3 but that thy eyes may faint1 and thy soul be spent3 and a great part of thy house shall die1 when they come to man's estate4 #b3cd4 ,and this shall be a sign to thee1 that shall come upon thy two sons1 ,ophni and ,phinees3 in one day they shall both of them die4 #b3ce4 ,and ,i will raise me up a faithful priest1 who shall do according to my heart1 and my soul and ,i will build him a faithful house1 and he shall walk all days before my anointed4 #b3cf4 ,and it shall come to pass1 that whosoever shall remain in thy house shall come that he may be prayed for1 and shall offer a piece of silver1 and a roll of bread1 and shall say3 ,put me1 ,i beseech thee1 to somewhat of the priestly office1 that ,i may eat a morsel of bread4 #a ,kings ,chapter #c ,samuel is four times called by the ,lord3 who revealeth to him the evil that shall fall on ,heli1 and his house4 #c3a4 ,now the child ,samuel ministered to the ,lord before ,heli1 and the word of the ,lord was precious in those days1 there was no manifest vision4 ,precious444 ,that is1 rare4 #c3b4 ,and it came to pass one day when ,heli lay in his place1 and his eyes were grown dim1 that he could not see3 #c3c4 ,before the lamp of ,god went out1 ,samuel slept in the temple of the ,lord1 where the ark of ,god was4 #c3d4 ,and the ,lord called ,samuel4 ,and he answered3 ,here am ,i4 #c3e4 ,and he ran to ,heli1 and said3 ,here am ,i3 for thou didst call me4 ,he said3 ,i did not call3 go back and sleep4 ,and he went and slept4 #c3f4 ,and the ,lord called ,samuel again4 ,and ,samuel arose and went to ,heli1 and said3 ,here am ,i3 for thou calledst me4 ,he answered3 ,i did not call thee1 my son3 return and sleep4 #c3g4 ,now ,samuel did not yet know the ,lord1 neither had the word of the ,lord been revealed to him4 #c3h4 ,and the ,lord called ,samuel again the third time4 ,and he arose up and went to ,heli1 #c3i4 ,and said3 ,here am ,i3 for thou didst call me4 ,then ,heli understood that the ,lord called the child1 and he said to ,samuel3 ,go1 and sleep3 and if he shall call thee any more1 thou shalt say3 ,speak1 ,lord1 for thy servant heareth4 ,so ,samuel went1 and slept in his place4 #c3aj4 ,and the ,lord came1 and stood1 and he called1 as he had called the other times1 ,samuel1 ,samuel4 ,and ,samuel said3 ,speak1 ,lord1 for thy servant heareth4 #c3aa4 ,and the ,lord said to ,samuel3 ,behold ,i do a thing in ,israel3 and whosoever shall hear it1 both his ears shall tingle4 #c3ab4 ,in that day ,i will raise up against ,heli all the things ,i have spoken concerning his house3 ,i will begin1 and ,i will make an end4 #c3ac4 ,for ,i have foretold unto him1 that ,i will judge his house for ever1 for iniquity1 because he knew that his sons did wickedly1 and did not chastise them4 #c3ad4 ,therefore have ,i sworn to the house of ,heli1 that the iniquity of his house shall not be expiated with victims nor offerings for ever4 #c3ae4 ,and ,samuel slept till morning1 and opened the doors of the house of the ,lord4 ,and ,samuel feared to tell the vision to ,heli4 #c3af4 ,then ,heli called ,samuel1 and said3 ,samuel1 my son4 ,and he answered3 ,here am ,i4 #c3ag4 ,and he asked him3 ,what is the word that the ,lord hath spoken to thee8 ,i beseech thee hide it not from me4 ,may ,god do so and so to thee1 and add so and so1 if thou hide from me one word of all that were said to thee4 #c3ah4 ,so ,samuel told him all the words1 and did not hide them from him4 ,and he answered3 ,it is the ,lord3 let him do what is good in his sight4 #c3ai4 ,and ,samuel grew1 and the ,lord was with him1 and not one of his words fell to the ground4 #c3bj4 ,and all ,israel1 from ,dan to ,bersabee1 knew that ,samuel was a faithful prophet of the ,lord4 #c3ba4 ,and the ,lord again appeared in ,silo1 for the ,lord revealed himself to ,samuel in ,silo1 according to the word of the ,lord4 ,and the word of ,samuel came to pass to all ,israel4 #a ,kings ,chapter #d ,the ,israelites being overcome by the ,philistines1 send for the ark of ,god3 but they are beaten again1 the sons of ,heli are killed1 and the ark taken3 upon the hearing of the news ,heli falleth backward and dieth4 #d3a4 ,and it came to pass in those days1 that the ,philistines gathered themselves together to fight3 and ,israel went out to war against the ,philistines1 and camped by the ,stone of help4 ,and the ,philistines came to ,aphec1 ,the ,stone of help444 ,in ,hebrew ,eben-ezer2 so called from the help which the ,lord was pleased afterwards to give to his people ,israel in that place1 by the prayers of ,samuel1 chap4 #g4ab4 #d3b4 ,and put their army in array against ,israel4 ,and when they had joined battle1 ,israel turned their backs to the ,philistines3 and there were slain in that fight1 here and there in the fields1 about four thousand men4 #d3c4 ,and the people returned to the camp3 and the ancients of ,israel said3 ,why hath the ,lord defeated us to day before the ,philistines8 ,let us fetch unto us the ark of the covenant of the ,lord from ,silo1 and let it come in the midst of us1 that it may save us from the hand of our enemies4 #d3d4 ,so the people sent to ,silo1 and they brought from thence the ark of the covenant of the ,lord of hosts1 sitting upon the cherubims3 and the two sons of ,heli1 ,ophni and ,phinees1 were with the ark of the covenant of ,god4 #d3e4 ,and when the ark of the covenant of the ,lord was come into the camp1 all ,israel shouted with a great shout1 and the earth rang again4 #d3f4 ,and the ,philistines heard the noise of the shout1 and they said3 ,what is this noise of a great shout in the camp of the ,hebrews8 ,and they understood that the ark of the ,lord was come into the camp4 #d3g4 ,and the ,philistines were afraid1 saying3 ,god is come into the camp4 ,and sighing1 they said3 #d3h4 ,woe to us3 for there was no such great joy yesterday1 and the day before3 ,woe to us4 ,who shall deliver us from the hand of these high ,gods8 these are the ,gods that struck ,egypt with all the plagues in the desert4 #d3i4 ,take courage1 and behave like men1 ye ,philistines3 lest you come to be servants to the ,hebrews1 as they have served you3 take courage and fight4 #d3aj4 ,so the ,philistines fought1 and ,israel was overthrown1 and every man fled to his own dwelling3 and there was an exceeding great slaughter2 for there fell of ,israel thirty thousand footmen4 #d3aa4 ,and the ark of ,god was taken3 and the two sons of ,heli1 ,ophni and ,phinees1 were slain4 #d3ab4 ,and there ran a man of ,benjamin out of the army1 and came to ,silo the same day1 with his clothes rent1 and his head strewed with dust4 #d3ac4 ,and when he was come1 ,heli sat upon a stool over against the way1 watching4 ,for his heart was fearful for the ark of ,god4 ,and when the man was come into the city1 he told it3 and all the city cried out4 #d3ad4 ,and ,heli heard the noise of the cry1 and he said3 ,what meaneth the noise of this uproar8 ,but he made haste1 and came1 and told ,heli4 #d3ae4 ,now ,heli was ninety and eight years old1 and his eyes were dim1 and he could not see4 #d3af4 ,and he said to ,heli3 ,i am he that came from the battle1 and have fled out of the field this day4 ,and he said to him3 ,what is there done1 my son8 #d3ag4 ,and he that brought the news answered1 and said3 ,israel is fled before the ,philistines1 and there has been a great slaughter of the people3 moreover thy two sons1 ,ophni and ,phinees1 are dead3 and the ark of ,god is taken4 #d3ah4 ,and when he had named the ark of ,god1 he fell from his stool backwards by the door1 and broke his neck and died4 ,for he was an old man1 and far advanced in years3 ,and he judged ,israel forty years4 ,named the ark1 etc444 ,there is great reason1 by all these circumstances1 to hope that ,heli died in a state of grace2 and by his temporal punishments escaped the eternal4 #d3ai4 ,and his daughter in law1 the wife of ,phinees1 was big with child1 and near her time3 and hearing the news that the ark of ,god was taken1 and her father in law1 and her husband1 were dead1 she bowed herself and fell in labour3 for her pains came upon her on a sudden4 #d3bj4 ,and when she was upon the point of death1 they that stood about her said to her3 ,fear not1 for thou hast borne a son4 ,she answered them not1 nor gave heed to them4 #d3ba4 ,and she called the child ,ichabod1 saying3 ,the glory is gone from ,israel1 because the ark of ,god was taken1 and for her father in law1 and for her husband3 ,ichabod444 ,that is1 ,where is the glory8 or1 there is no glory4 ,we see how much the ,israelites lamented the loss of the ark1 which was but the symbol of ,god's presence among them4 ,how much more ought ,christians to lament the loss of ,god himself1 when by sin they have driven him out of their souls4 #d3bb4 ,and she said3 ,the glory is departed from ,israel1 because the ark of ,god was taken4 #a ,kings ,chapter #e ,dagon twice falleth down before the ark4 ,the ,philistines are grievously afflicted1 wherever the ark cometh4 #e3a4 ,and the ,philistines took the ark of ,god1 and carried it from the ,stone of help into ,azotus4 #e3b4 ,and the ,philistines took the ark of ,god1 and brought it into the temple of ,dagon1 and set it by ,dagon4 #e3c4 ,and when the ,azotians arose early the next day1 behold ,dagon lay upon his face on the ground before the ark of the ,lord3 and they took ,dagon1 and set him again in his place4 #e3d4 ,and the next day again1 when they rose in the morning1 they found ,dagon lying upon his face on the earth before the ark of the ,lord3 and the head of ,dagon1 and both the palms of his hands1 were cut off upon the threshold3 #e3e4 ,and only the stump of ,dagon remained in its place4 ,for this cause neither the priests of ,dagon1 nor any that go into the temple1 tread on the threshold of ,dagon in ,azotus unto this day4 #e3f4 ,and the hand of the ,lord was heavy upon the ,azotians1 and he destroyed them1 and afflicted ,azotus and the coasts thereof with emerods4 ,and in the villages and fields in the midst of that country1 there came forth a multitude of mice1 and there was the confusion of a great mortality in the city4 #e3g4 ,and the men of ,azotus seeing this kind of plague1 said3 ,the ark of the ,god of ,israel shall not stay with us3 for his hand is heavy upon us1 and upon ,dagon1 our god4 #e3h4 ,and sending1 they gathered together all the lords of the ,philistines to them1 and said3 ,what shall we do with the ark of the ,god of ,israel8 ,and the ,gethites answered3 ,let the ark of the ,god of ,israel be carried about4 ,and they carried the ark of the ,god of ,israel about4 #e3i4 ,and while they were carrying it about1 the hand of the ,lord came upon every city with an exceeding great slaughter3 and he smote the men of every city1 both small and great1 and they had emerods in their secret parts4 ,and the ,gethites consulted together1 and made themselves seats of skins4 #e3aj4 ,therefore they sent the ark of ,god into ,accaron4 ,and when the ark of ,god was come into ,accaron1 the ,accaronites cried out1 saying3 ,they have brought the ark of the ,god of ,israel to us1 to kill us and our people4 #e3aa4 ,they sent therefore1 and gathered together all the lords of the ,philistines3 and they said3 ,send away the ark of the ,god of ,israel1 and let it return into its own place1 and not kill us and our people4 #e3ab4 ,for there was the fear of death in every city1 and the hand of ,god was exceeding heavy4 ,the men also that did not die1 were afflicted with the emerods3 and the cry of every city went up to heaven4 #a ,kings ,chapter #f ,the ark is sent back to ,bethsames3 where many are slain for looking through curiosity into it4 #f3a4 ,now the ark of ,god was in the land of the ,philistines seven months4 #f3b4 ,and the ,philistines called for the priests and the diviners1 saying3 ,what shall we do with the ark of the ,lord8 tell us how we are to send it back to its place4 ,and they said3 #f3c4 ,if you send back the ark of the ,god of ,israel1 send it not away empty1 but render unto him what you owe for sin1 and then you shall be healed3 and you shall know why his hand departeth not from you4 #f3d4 ,they answered3 ,what is it we ought to render unto him for sin8 and they answered3 #f3e4 ,according to the number of the provinces of the ,philistines you shall make five golden emerods1 and five golden mice3 for the same plague hath been upon you all1 and upon your lords4 ,and you shall make the likeness of your emerods1 and the likeness of the mice1 that have destroyed the land1 and you shall give glory to the ,god of ,israel3 to see if he will take off his hand from you1 and from your gods1 and from your land4 #f3f4 ,why do you harden your hearts1 as ,egypt and ,pharao hardened their hearts8 did not he1 after he was struck1 then let them go1 and they departed8 #f3g4 ,now1 therefore1 take and make a new cart3 and two kine that have calved1 on which there hath come no yoke1 tie to the cart1 and shut up their calves at home4 #f3h4 ,and you shall take the ark of the ,lord1 and lay it on the cart1 and the vessels of gold1 which you have paid him for sin1 you shall put into a little box at the side thereof3 and send it away1 that it may go4 #f3i4 ,and you shall look3 and if it go up by the way of his own coasts1 towards ,bethsames1 then he hath done us this great evil3 but if not1 we shall know that it is not his hand hath touched us1 but it hath happened by chance4 #f3aj4 ,they did therefore in this manner3 and taking two kine1 that had sucking calves1 they yoked them to the cart1 and shut up their calves at home4 #f3aa4 ,and they laid the ark of ,god upon the cart1 and the little box that had in it the golden mice1 and the likeness of the emerods4 #f3ab4 ,and the kine took the straight way1 that leadeth to ,bethsames1 and they went along the way1 lowing as they went3 and turned not aside neither to the right hand nor to the left3 and the lords of the ,philistines followed them as far as the borders of ,bethsames4 #f3ac4 ,now the ,bethsamites were reaping wheat in the valley3 and lifting up their eyes1 they saw the ark1 and rejoiced to see it4 #f3ad4 ,and the cart came into the field of ,josue1 a ,bethsamite1 and stood there4 ,and there was a great stone1 and they cut in pieces the wood of the cart1 and laid the kine upon it a holocaust to the ,lord4 #f3ae4 ,and the ,levites took down the ark of ,god1 and the little box that was at the side of it1 wherein were the vessels of gold1 and they put them upon the great stone4 ,the men also of ,bethsames offered holocausts1 and sacrificed victims that day to the ,lord4 #f3af4 ,and the five princes of the ,philistines saw1 and they returned to ,accaron the same day4 #f3ag4 ,and these are the golden emerods1 which the ,philistines returned for sin to the ,lord3 ,for ,azotus one1 for ,gaza one1 for ,ascalon one1 for ,geth one1 for ,accaron one3 #f3ah4 ,and the golden mice1 according to the number of the cities of the ,philistines1 of the five provinces1 from the fenced city to the village that was without wall1 and to the great ,abel 7the stone7 whereon they set down the ark of the ,lord1 which was till that day in the field of ,josue the ,bethsamite4 #f3ai4 ,but he slew of the men of ,bethsames1 because they had seen the ark of the ,lord1 and he slew of the people seventy men1 and fifty thousand of the common people4 ,and the people lamented1 because the ,lord had smitten the people with a great slaughter4 ,seen444 ,and curiously looked into4 ,it is likely this plague reached to all the neighbouring country1 as well as the city of ,bethsames4 #f3bj4 ,and the men of ,bethsames said3 ,who shall be able to stand before the ,lord this holy ,god8 and to whom shall he go up from us8 #f3ba4 ,and they sent messengers to the inhabitants of ,cariathiarim1 saying3 ,the ,philistines have brought back the ark of the ,lord1 come ye down and fetch it up to you4 #a ,kings ,chapter #g ,the ark is brought to ,cariathiarim4 ,by ,samuel's exhortation the people cast away their idols and serve ,god alone4 ,the ,lord defeateth the ,philistines1 while ,samuel offereth sacrifice4 #g3a4 ,and the men of ,cariathiarim came1 and fetched up the ark of the ,lord1 and carried it into the house of ,abinadab1 in ,gabaa3 and they sanctified ,eleazar1 his son1 to keep the ark of the ,lord4 ,in ,gabaa444 ,that is1 on the hill1 for ,gabaa signifieth a hill4 #g3b4 ,and it came to pass1 that from the day the ark of the ,lord abode in ,cariathiarim1 days were multiplied 7for it was now the twentieth year7 and all the house of ,israel rested1 following the ,lord4 #g3c4 ,and ,samuel spoke to all the house of ,israel1 saying3 ,if you turn to the ,lord with all your heart1 put away the strange gods from among you1 ,baalim and ,astaroth3 and prepare your hearts unto the ,lord1 and serve him only1 and he will deliver you out of the hand of the ,philistines4 #g3d4 ,then the children of ,israel put away ,baalim and ,astaroth1 and served the ,lord only4 #g3e4 ,and ,samuel said3 ,gather all ,israel to ,masphath1 that ,i may pray to the ,lord for you4 #g3f4 ,and they gathered together to ,masphath1 and they drew water1 and poured it out before the ,lord1 and they fasted on that day1 and they said there3 ,we have sinned against the ,lord4 ,and ,samuel judged the children of ,israel in ,masphath4 #g3g4 ,and the ,philistines heard that the children of ,israel were gathered together to ,masphath1 and the lords of the ,philistines went up against ,israel4 ,and when the children of ,israel heard this1 they were afraid of the ,philistines4 #g3h4 ,and they said to ,samuel3 ,cease not to cry to the ,lord our ,god for us1 that he may save us out of the hand of the ,philistines4 #g3i4 ,and ,samuel took a sucking lamb1 and offered it whole for a holocaust to the ,lord3 and ,samuel cried to the ,lord for ,israel1 and the ,lord heard him4 #g3aj4 ,and it came to pass1 when ,samuel was offering the holocaust1 the ,philistines began the battle against ,israel3 but the ,lord thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the ,philistines1 and terrified them1 and they were overthrown before the face of ,israel4 #g3aa4 ,and the men of ,israel going out of ,masphath1 pursued after the ,philistines1 and made slaughter of them till they came under ,bethchar4 #g3ab4 ,and ,samuel took a stone1 and laid it between ,masphath and ,sen3 and he called the place ,the stone of help4 ,and he said3 ,thus far the ,lord hath helped us4 #g3ac4 ,and the ,philistines were humbled1 and they did not come any more into the borders of ,israel4 ,and the hand of the ,lord was against the ,philistines1 all the days of ,samuel4 #g3ad4 ,and the cities which the ,philistines had taken from ,israel1 were restored to ,israel1 from ,accaron to ,geth1 and their borders3 and he delivered ,israel from the hand of the ,philistines1 and there was peace between ,israel and the ,amorrhites4 #g3ae4 ,and ,samuel judged ,israel all the days of his life3 #g3af4 ,and he went every year about to ,bethel and to ,galgal and to ,masphath1 and he judged ,israel in the foresaid places4 #g3ag4 ,and he returned to ,ramatha3 for there was his house1 and there he judged ,israel3 he built also there an altar to the ,lord4 #a ,kings ,chapter #h ,samuel growing old1 and his sons not walking in his ways1 the people desire a king4 #h3a4 ,and it came to pass1 when ,samuel was old1 that he appointed his sons to be judges over ,israel4 #h3b4 ,now the name of his firstborn son was ,joel3 and the name of the second was ,abia1 judges in ,bersabee4 #h3c4 ,and his sons walked not in his ways3 but they turned aside after lucre1 and took bribes1 and perverted judgment4 #h3d4 ,then all the ancients of ,israel being assembled came to ,samuel to ,ramatha4 #h3e4 ,and they said to him3 ,behold thou art old1 and thy sons walk not in thy ways3 make us a king1 to judge us1 as all nations have4 #h3f4 ,and the word was displeasing in the eyes of ,samuel1 that they should say3 ,give us a king to judge us4 ,and ,samuel prayed to the ,lord4 #h3g4 ,and the ,lord said to ,samuel3 ,hearken to the voice of the people in all that they say to thee4 ,for they have not rejected thee1 but me1 that ,i should not reign over them4 ,rejected1 etc444 ,the government of ,israel hitherto had been a theocracy1 in which ,god himself immediately ruled1 by laws which he had enacted1 and by judges extraordinarily raised up by himself2 and therefore he complains that his people rejected him1 in desiring a change of government4 #h3h4 ,according to all their works1 they have done from the day that ,i brought them out of ,egypt until this day3 as they have forsaken me1 and served strange gods1 so do they also unto thee4 #h3i4 ,now1 therefore1 hearken to their voice3 but yet testify to them1 and foretell them the right of the king1 that shall reign over them4 ,the right444 ,that is1 the manner 7misphat7 after which he shall proceed1 having no one to control him1 when he has the power in his hand4 #h3aj4 ,then ,samuel told all the words of the ,lord to the people that had desired a king of him1 #h3aa4 ,and said3 ,this will be the right of the king that shall reign over you3 ,he will take your sons1 and put them in his chariots1 and will make them his horsemen1 and his running footmen1 to run before his chariots1 #h3ab4 ,and he will appoint of them to be his tribunes1 and his centurions1 and to plough his fields1 and to reap his corn1 and to make him arms and chariots4 #h3ac4 ,your daughters also he will take to make him ointments1 and to be his cooks1 and bakers4 #h3ad4 ,and he will take your fields1 and your vineyards1 and your best oliveyards1 and give them to his servants4 #h3ae4 ,moreover he will take the tenth of your corn1 and of the revenues of your vineyards1 to give to his eunuchs and servants4 #h3af4 ,your servants also1 and handmaids1 and your goodliest young men1 and your asses1 he will take away1 and put them to his work4 #h3ag4 ,your flocks also he will tithe1 and you shall be his servants4 #h3ah4 ,and you shall cry out in that day from the face of the king1 whom you have chosen to yourselves3 and the ,lord will not hear you in that day1 because you desired unto yourselves a king4 #h3ai4 ,but the people would not hear the voice of ,samuel1 and they said1 ,nay3 but there shall be a king over us1 #h3bj4 ,and we also will be like all nations3 and our king shall judge us1 and go out before us1 and fight our battles for us4 #h3ba4 ,and ,samuel heard all the words of the people1 and rehearsed them in the ears of the ,lord4 #h3bb4 ,and the ,lord said to ,samuel3 ,hearken to their voice1 and make them a king4 ,and ,samuel said to the men of ,israel3 ,let every man go to his city4 #a ,kings ,chapter #i ,saul seeking his father's asses1 cometh to ,samuel1 by whom he is entertained4 #i3a4 ,now there was a man of ,benjamin1 whose name was ,cis1 the son of ,abiel1 the son of ,seror1 the son of ,bechorath1 the son of ,aphia1 the son of a man of ,jemini1 valiant and strong4 #i3b4 ,and he had a son whose name was ,saul1 a choice and goodly man1 and there was not among the children of ,israel a goodlier person than he3 from his shoulders and upward he appeared above all the people4 #i3c4 ,and the asses of ,cis1 ,saul's father1 were lost3 and ,cis said to his son ,saul3 ,take one of the servants with thee1 and arise1 go1 and seek the asses4 ,and when they had passed through ,mount ,ephraim1 #i3d4 ,and through the land of ,salisa1 and had not found them1 they passed also through the land of ,salim1 and they were not there3 and through the land of ,jemini1 and found them not4 #i3e4 ,and when they were come to the land of ,suph1 ,saul said to the servant that was with him3 ,come1 let us return1 lest perhaps my father forget the asses1 and be concerned for us4 #i3f4 ,and he said to him3 ,behold there is a man of ,god in this city1 a famous man3 all that he saith1 cometh certainly to pass4 ,now1 therefore1 let us go thither1 perhaps he may tell us of our way1 for which we are come4 #i3g4 ,and ,saul said to his servant3 ,behold we will go3 but what shall we carry to the man of ,god8 the bread is spent in our bags3 and we have no present to make to the man of ,god1 nor any thing at all4 #i3h4 ,the servant answered ,saul again1 and said3 ,behold there is found in my hand the fourth part of a sicle of silver1 let us give it to the man of ,god1 that he may tell us our way4 #i3i4 ,now in time past in ,israel1 when a man went to consult ,god1 he spoke thus3 ,come1 let us go to the seer4 ,for he that is now called a prophet1 in time past was called a seer4 ,seer444 ,because of his seeing by divine light hidden things and things to come4 #i3aj4 ,and ,saul said to his servant3 ,thy word is very good1 come let us go4 ,and they went into the city1 where the man of ,god was4 #i3aa4 ,and when they went up the ascent to the city1 they found maids coming out to draw water1 and they said to them3 ,is the seer here8 #i3ab4 ,they answered and said to them3 ,he is3 behold he is before you1 make haste now3 for he came to day into the city1 for there is a sacrifice of the people to day in the high place4 ,a sacrifice444 ,the law did not allow of sacrifices in any other place1 but at the tabernacle1 or temple1 in which the ark of the covenant was kept2 but ,samuel1 by divine dispensation1 offered sacrifices in other places4 ,for which dispensation this reason may be alleged1 that the house of ,god in ,silo1 having lost the ark1 was now cast off2 as a figure of the reprobation of the ,jews1 ,ps4 #gg4fj1 #fg4 ,and in ,cariathiarim where the ark was1 there was neither tabernacle1 nor altar4-,ibid4 ,the high place444 ,excelsum4 ,the excelsa1 or high places1 so often mentioned in scripture1 were places of worship1 in which were altars for sacrifice4 ,these were sometimes employed in the service of the true ,god1 as in the present case3 but more frequently in the service of idols2 and were called excelsa1 which is commonly 7though perhaps not so accurately7 rendered high places2 not because they were always upon hills1 for the very worst of all1 which was that of ,topheth1 or ,geennom1 7,jer4 #ai47 was in a valley2 but because of the high altars1 and pillars1 or monuments1 erected there1 on which were set up the idols1 or images of their deities4 #i3ac4 ,as soon as you come into the city1 you shall immediately find him1 before he go up to the high place to eat3 for the people will not eat till he come2 because he blesseth the victim1 and afterwards they eat that are invited4 ,now1 therefore1 go up1 for to day you shall find him4 #i3ad4 ,and they went up into the city4 ,and when they were walking in the midst of the city1 behold ,samuel was coming out over against them1 to go up to the high place4 #i3ae4 ,now the ,lord had revealed to the ear of ,samuel the day before ,saul came1 saying3 #i3af4 ,to morrow about this same hour ,i will send thee a man of the land of ,benjamin1 and thou shalt anoint him to be ruler over my people ,israel3 and he shall save my people out of the hand of the ,philistines3 for ,i have looked down upon my people1 because their cry is come to me4 #i3ag4 ,and when ,samuel saw ,saul1 the ,lord said to him3 ,behold the man1 of whom ,i spoke to thee1 this man shall reign over my people4 #i3ah4 ,and ,saul came to ,samuel in the midst of the gate1 and said3 ,tell me1 ,i pray thee1 where is the house of the seer8 #i3ai4 ,and ,samuel answered ,saul1 saying3 ,i am the seer2 go up before me to the high place1 that you may eat with me to day1 and ,i will let thee go in the morning3 and tell thee all that is in thy heart4 #i3bj4 ,and as for the asses1 which were lost three days ago1 be not solicitous1 because they are found4 ,and for whom shall be all the best things of ,israel8 ,shall they not be for thee and for all thy father's house8 #i3ba4 ,and ,saul answering1 said3 ,am not ,i a son of ,jemini of the least tribe of ,israel1 and my kindred the last among all the families of the tribe of ,benjamin8 ,why then hast thou spoken this word to me8 #i3bb4 ,then ,samuel taking ,saul1 and his servant1 brought them into the parlour1 and gave them a place at the head of them that were invited4 ,for there were about thirty men4 #i3bc4 ,and ,samuel said to the cook3 ,bring the portion which ,i gave thee1 and commanded thee to set it apart by thee4 #i3bd4 ,and the cook took up the shoulder1 and set it before ,saul4 ,and ,samuel said3 ,behold what is left1 set it before thee1 and eat2 because it was kept of purpose for thee1 when ,i invited the people4 ,and ,saul ate with ,samuel that day4 #i3be4 ,and they went down from the high place into the town1 and he spoke with ,saul upon the top of the house3 and he prepared a bed for ,saul on the top of the house and he slept4 #i3bf4 ,and when they were risen in the morning1 and it began now to be light1 ,samuel called ,saul on the top of the house1 saying3 ,arise1 that ,i may let thee go4 ,and ,saul arose3 and they went out both of them3 to wit1 he and ,samuel4 #i3bg4 ,and as they were going down in the end of the city1 ,samuel said to ,saul3 ,speak to the servant to go before us1 and pass on3 but stand thou still a while1 that ,i may tell thee the word of the ,lord4 #a ,kings ,chapter #aj ,saul is anointed4 ,he prophesieth1 and is changed into another man4 ,samuel calleth the people together1 to make a king3 the lot falleth on ,saul4 #aj3a4 ,and ,samuel took a little vial of oil1 and poured it upon his head1 and kissed him1 and said3 ,behold1 the ,lord hath anointed thee to be prince over his inheritance1 and thou shalt deliver his people out of the hands of their enemies1 that are round about them4 ,and this shall be a sign unto thee1 that ,god hath anointed thee to be prince4 #aj3b4 ,when thou shalt depart from me this day1 thou shalt find two men by the sepulchre of ,rachel in the borders of ,benjamin to the south1 and they shall say to thee3 ,the asses are found which thou wentest to seek3 and thy father1 thinking no more of the asses1 is concerned for you1 and saith3 ,what shall ,i do for my son8 #aj3c4 ,and when thou shalt depart from thence1 and go farther on1 and shalt come to the oak of ,thabor1 there shall meet thee three men going up to ,god to ,bethel1 one carrying three kids1 and another three loaves of bread1 and another carrying a bottle of wine4 ,bethel444 ,where there was at that time an altar of ,god2 it being one of the places where ,samuel judged ,israel4 #aj3d4 ,and they will salute thee1 and will give thee two loaves1 and thou shalt take them at their hand4 #aj3e4 ,after that thou shalt come to the hill of ,god1 where the garrison of the ,philistines is3 and when thou shalt be come there into the city1 thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place1 with a psaltery1 and a timbrel1 and a pipe1 and a harp before them1 and they shall be prophesying4 ,the hill of ,god444 ,gabaa1 in which there was also at that time1 a high place or altar4-,prophets444 ,these were men whose office it was to sing hymns and praises to ,god2 for such in holy writ are called prophets1 and their singing praises to ,god is called prophesying4 ,see #a ,par4 alias #a ,chr4 #ae4bb1 and #be4a4 ,now there were in those days colleges1 or shcools for training up these prophets2 and it seems there was one of these schools at this hill of ,god2 and another at ,najoth in ,ramatha4 ,see #a ,kings #ai4bj1 #ba1 etc4 #aj3f4 ,and the ,spirit of the ,lord shall come upon thee1 and thou shalt prophesy with them1 and shalt be changed into another man4 #aj3g4 ,when therefore these signs shall happen to thee1 do whatsoever thy hand shall find1 for the ,lord is with thee4 #aj3h4 ,and thou shalt go down before me to ,galgal1 7for ,i will come down to thee71 that thou mayst offer an oblation1 and sacrifice victims of peace3 seven days shalt thou wait1 till ,i come to thee1 and ,i will shew thee what thou art to do4 ,galgal444 ,here also by dispensation was an altar of ,god4 #aj3i4 ,so when he had turned his back to go from ,samuel1 ,god gave unto him another heart1 and all these things came to pass that day4 #aj3aj ,and they came to the foresaid hill1 and behold a company of prophets met him3 and the ,spirit of the ,lord came upon him1 and he prophesied in the midst of them4 #aj3aa4 ,and all that had known him yesterday and the day before1 seeing tha the was with the prophets1 and prophesied1 said to each other3 ,what is this that hath happened to the son of ,cis8 is ,saul also among the prophets8 #aj3ab4 ,and one answered another1 saying3 ,and who is their father8 therefore it became a proverb3 ,is ,saul also among the prophets8 ,their father444 ,that is1 their teacher1 or superior4 ,as much as to say1 ,who could bring about such a wonderful change as to make ,saul a prophet8 #aj3ac4 ,and when he had made an end of prophesying1 he came to the high place4 #aj3ad4 ,and ,saul's uncle said to him1 and to his servant3 ,whither went you8 ,they answered3 ,to seek the asses3 and not finding them1 we went to ,samuel4 #aj3ae4 ,and his uncle said to him3 ,tell me what ,samuel said to thee4 #aj3af4 ,and ,saul said to his uncle3 ,he told us that the asses were found4 ,but of the matter of the kingdom of which ,samuel had spoken to him1 he told him not4 #aj3ag4 ,and ,samuel called together the people to the ,lord in ,maspha3 #aj3ah4 ,and he said to the children of ,israel3 ,thus saith the ,lord the ,god of ,israel3 ,i brought up ,israel out of ,egypt1 and delivered you from the hand of the ,egyptians1 and from the hand of all the kings who afflicted you4 #aj3ai4 ,but you this day have rejected your ,god1 who only hath saved you out of all your evils and your tribulations3 and you have said3 ,nay3 but set a king over us4 ,now therefore stand before the ,lord by your tribes1 and by your families4 #aj3bj4 ,and ,samuel brought to him all the tribes of ,israel1 and the lot fell on the tribe of ,benjamin4 #aj3ba4 ,and he brought the tribe of ,benjamin and the kindreds thereof1 and the lot fell upon the kindred of ,metri1 and it came to ,saul1 the son of ,cis4 ,they sought him therefore1 and he was not found4 #aj3bb4 ,and after this they consulted the ,lord whether he would come thither4 ,and the ,lord answered3 ,behold he is hidden at home4 #aj3bc4 ,and they ran and fetched him thence3 and he stood in the midst of the people1 and he was higher than any of the people from the shoulders and upward4 #aj3bd4 ,and ,samuel said to all the people3 ,surely you see him whom the ,lord hath chosen1 that there is none like him among all the people4 ,and all the people cried and said3 ,god save the king4 #aj3be4 ,and ,samuel told the people the law of the kingdom1 and wrote it in a book1 and laid it up before the ,lord3 and ,samuel sent away all the people1 every one to his own house4 #aj3bf4 ,saul also departed to his own house in ,gabaa3 and there went with him a part of the army1 whose hearts ,god had touched4 #aj3bg4 ,but the children of ,belial said3 ,shall this fellow be able to save us8 ,and they despised him1 and brought him no presents2 but he dissembled as though he heard not4 #a ,kings ,chapter #aa ,saul defeateth the ,ammonites1 and delivereth ,jabes ,galaad4 #aa3a4 ,and it came to pass about a month after this1 that ,naas1 the ,ammonite1 came up1 and began to fight against ,jabes ,galaad4 ,and all the men of ,jabes said to ,naas3 ,make a covenant with us1 and we will serve thee4 #aa3b4 ,and ,naas1 the ,ammonite1 answered them3 ,on this condition will ,i make a covenant with you1 that ,i may pluck out all your right eyes1 and make you a reproach in all ,israel4 #aa3c4 ,and the ancients of ,jabes said to him3 ,allow us seven days1 that we may send messengers to all the coasts of ,israel3 and if there be no one to defend us1 we will come out to thee4 #aa3d4 ,the messengers therefore came to ,gabaa of ,saul3 and they spoke these words in the hearing of the people3 and all the people lifted up their voices1 and wept4 #aa3e4 ,and behold ,saul came1 following oxen out of the field1 and he said3 ,what aileth the people that they weep8 ,and they told him the words of the men of ,jabes4 #aa3f4 ,and the ,spirit of the ,lord came upon ,saul1 when he had heard these words1 and his anger was exceedingly kindled4 #aa3g4 ,and taking both the oxen1 he cut them in pieces1 and sent them into all the coasts of ,israel1 by messengers1 saying3 ,whosoever shall not come forth1 and follow ,saul and ,samuel1 so shall it be done to his oxen4 ,and the fear of the ,lord fell upon the people1 and they went out as one man4 #aa3h4 ,and he numbered them in ,bezec3 and there were of the children of ,israel three hundred thousand3 and of the men of ,juda thirty thousand4 #aa3i4 ,and they said to the messengers that came3 ,thus shall you say to the men of ,jabes ,galaad3 ,to morrow1 when the sun shall be hot1 you shall have relief4 ,the messengers therefore came1 and told the men of ,jabes1 and they were glad4 #aa3aj4 ,and they said3 ,in the morning we will come out to you3 and you shall do what you please with us4 #aa3aa4 ,and it came to pass1 when the morrow was come1 that ,saul put the people in three companies3 and he came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch1 and he slew the ,ammonites until the day grew hot1 and the rest were scattered1 so that two of them were not left together4 #aa3ab4 ,and the people said to ,samuel3 ,who is he that said3 ,shall ,saul reign over us8 ,bring the men1 and we will kill them4 #aa3ac4 ,and ,saul said3 ,no man shall be killed this day3 because the ,lord this day hath wrought salvation in ,israel3 #aa3ad4 ,and ,samuel said to the people3 ,come1 and let us go to ,galgal1 and let us renew the kingdom there4 #aa3ae4 ,and all the people went to ,galgal1 and there they made ,saul king1 before the ,lord in ,galgal1 and they sacrificed there victims of peace before the ,lord4 ,and there ,saul and all the men of ,israel rejoiced exceedingly4 #a ,kings ,chapter #ab ,samuel's integrity is acknowledged4 ,god sheweth by a sign from heaven that they had done ill in asking for a king4 #ab3a4 ,and ,samuel said to all ,israel3 ,behold ,i have hearkened to your voice in all that you said to me1 and have made a king over you4 #ab3b4 ,and now the king goeth before you3 but ,i am old and greyheaded3 and my sons are with you3 having then conversed with you from my youth until this day1 behold here ,i am4 #ab3c4 ,speak of me before the ,lord1 and before his anointed1 whether ,i have taken any man's ox1 or ass3 if ,i have wronged any man1 if ,i have oppressed any man1 if ,i have taken a bribe at any man's hand3 and ,i will despise it this day1 and will restore it to you4 #ab3d4 ,and they said3 ,thou hast not wronged us1 nor oppressed us1 nor taken ought at any man's hand4 #ab3e4 ,and he said to them3 ,the ,lord is witness against you1 and his anointed is witness this day1 that you have not found any thing in my hand4 ,and they said3 ,he is witness4 #ab3f4 ,and ,samuel said to the people3 ,it is the ,lord who made ,moses and ,aaron1 and brought our fathers out of the land of ,egypt4 #ab3g4 ,now1 therefore1 stand up1 that ,i may plead in judgment against you before the ,lord1 concerning all the kindness of the ,lord1 which he hath shewn to you1 and to your fathers3 #ab3h4 ,how ,jacob went into ,egypt1 and your fathers cried to the ,lord3 and the ,lord sent ,moses and ,aaron1 and brought your fathers out of ,egypt1 and made them dwell in this place4 #ab3i4 ,and they forgot the ,lord their ,god1 and he delivered them into the hands of ,sisara1 captain of the army of ,hasor1 and into the hands of the ,philistines1 and into the hand of the king of ,moab1 and they fought against them4 #ab3aj ,but afterwards they cried to the ,lord1 and said3 ,we have sinned1 because we have forsaken the ,lord1 and have served ,baalim and ,astaroth3 but now deliver us from the hand of our enemies1 and we will serve thee4 #ab3aa4 ,and the ,lord sent ,jerobaal1 and ,badan1 and ,jephte1 and ,samuel1 and delivered you from the hand of your enemies round about1 and you dwelt securely4 ,jerobaal and ,badan444 ,that is1 ,gedeon and ,samson called here ,badan or ,bedan1 because he was of ,dan4 #ab3ab4 ,but seeing that ,naas1 king of the children of ,ammon1 was come against you1 you said to me3 ,nay1 but a king shall reign over us3 whereas the ,lord your ,god was your king4 #ab3ac4 ,now1 therefore1 your king is here1 whom you have chosen and desired3 ,behold the ,lord hath given you a king4 #ab3ad4 ,if you will fear the ,lord1 and serve him1 and hearken to his voice1 and not provoke the mouth of the ,lord3 then shall both you1 and the king who reigneth over you1 be followers of the ,lord your ,god4 #ab3ae4 ,but if you will not hearken to the voice of the ,lord1 but will rebel against his words1 the hand of the ,lord shall be upon you1 and upon your fathers4 #ab3af4 ,now then stand1 and see this great thing which the ,lord will do in your sight4 #ab3ag4 ,is it not wheat harvest to day8 ,i will call upon the ,lord1 and he shall send thunder and rain3 and you shall know1 and see that you yourselves have done a great evil in the sight of the ,lord1 in desiring a king over you4 ,wheat harvest444 ,at which time of the year1 it never thunders or rains in those countries4 #ab3ah4 ,and ,samuel cried unto the ,lord1 and the ,lord sent thunder and rain that day4 #ab3ai4 ,and all the people greatly feared the ,lord and ,samuel4 ,and all the people said to ,samuel3 ,pray for thy servants to the ,lord thy ,god1 that we may not die1 for we have added to all our sins this evil1 to ask for a king4 #ab3bj4 ,and ,samuel said to the people3 ,fear not1 you have done all this evil3 but yet depart not from following the ,lord1 but serve the ,lord with all your heart4 #ab3ba4 ,and turn not aside after vain things1 which shall never profit you1 nor deliver you1 because they are vain4 #ab3bb4 ,and the ,lord will not forsake his people for his great name's sake3 because the ,lord hath sworn to make you his people4 #ab3bc4 ,and far from me be this sin against the ,lord1 that ,i should cease to pray for you3 and ,i will teach you the good and right way4 #ab3bd4 ,therefore fear the ,lord1 and serve him in truth1 and with your whole heart1 for you have seen the great works which he hath done among you4 #ab3be4 ,but if you will still do wickedly3 both you and your king shall perish together4 #a ,kings ,chapter #ac ,the war between ,saul and the ,philistines4 ,the distress of the ,israelites4 ,saul offereth sacrifice before the coming of ,samuel3 for which he is reproved4 #ac3a4 ,saul was a child of one year when he began to reign1 and he reigned two years over ,israel4 ,of one year444 ,that is1 he was good and like an innocent child1 and for two years continued in that innocency4 #ac3b4 ,and ,saul chose him three thousand men of ,israel3 and two thousand were with ,saul in ,machmas1 and in mount ,bethel3 and a thousand with ,jonathan in ,gabaa of ,benjamin3 and the rest of the people he sent back every man to their dwellings4 #ac3c4 ,and ,jonathan smote the garrison of the ,philistines which was in ,gabaa4 ,and when the ,philistines had heard of it1 ,saul sounded the trumpet over all the land1 saying3 ,let the ,hebrews hear4 #ac3d4 ,and all ,israel heard this report3 ,saul hath smitten the garrison of the ,philistines3 and ,israel took courageagainst the ,philistines4 ,and the people were called together after ,saul to ,galgal4 #ac3e4 ,the ,philistines also were assembled to fight against ,israel1 thirty thousand chariots1 and six thousand horsemen1 and a multitude of people besides1 like the sand on the seashore for number4 ,and going up they camped in ,machmas1 at the east of ,bethaven4 #ac3f4 ,and when the men of ,israel saw that they were straitened 7for the people were distressed71 they hid themselves in caves1 and in thickets1 and in rocks1 and in dens1 and in pits4 #ac3g4 ,and some of the ,hebrews passed over the ,jordan into the land of ,gad and ,galaad4 ,and when ,saul was yet in ,galgal1 all the people that followed him were greatly afraid4 #ac3h4 ,and he waited seven days1 according to the appointment of ,samuel1 and ,samuel came not to ,galgal1 and the people slipt away from him4 #ac3i4 ,then ,saul said3 ,bring me the holocaust1 and the peace offerings4 ,and he offered the holocaust4 #ac3aj4 ,and when he had made an end of offering the holocaust1 behold ,samuel came3 and ,saul went forth to meet him and salute him4 #ac3aa4 ,and ,samuel said to him3 ,what hast thou done8 ,saul answered3 ,because ,i saw that the people slipt from me1 and thou wast not come according to the days appointed1 and the ,philistines were gathered together in ,machmas1 #ac3ab4 ,i said3 ,now will the ,philistines come down upon me to ,galgal1 and ,i have not appeased the face of the ,lord4 ,forced by necessity1 ,i offered the holocaust4 #ac3ac4 ,and ,samuel said to ,saul3 ,thou hast done foolishly1 and hast not kept the commandments of the ,lord thy ,god1 which he commanded thee4 ,and if thou hadst not done thus1 the ,lord would now have established thy kingdom over ,israel for ever3 #ac3ad4 ,but thy kingdom shall not continue4 ,the ,lord hath sought him a man according to his own heart3 and him hath the ,lord commanded to be prince over his people1 because thou hast not observed that which the ,lord commanded4 #ac3ae4 ,and ,samuel arose and went up from ,galgal to ,gabaa of ,benjamin4 ,and the rest of the people went up after ,saul1 to meet the people who fought against them1 going from ,galgal to ,gabaa1 in the hill of ,benjamin4 ,and ,saul numbered the people1 that were found with him1 about six hundred men4 #ac3af4 ,and ,saul1 and ,jonathan his son1 and the people that were present with them1 were in ,gabaa of ,benjamin3 ,but the ,philistines encamped in ,machmas4 #ac3ag4 ,and there went out of the camp of the ,philistines three companies to plunder4 ,one company went towards the way of ,ephra to the land of ,sual2 #ac3ah4 ,and another went by the way of ,bethoron1 and the third turned to the way of the border1 above the valley of ,seboim towards the desert4 #ac3ai4 ,now there was no smith to be found in all the land of ,israel1 for the ,philistines had taken this precaution1 lest the ,hebrews should make them swords or spears4 #ac3bj4 ,so all ,israel went down to the ,philistines1 to sharpen every man his ploughshare1 and his spade1 and his axe1 and his rake4 #ac3ba4 ,so that their shares1 and their spades1 and their forks1 and their axes1 were blunt1 even to the goad1 which was to be mended4 #ac3bb4 ,and when the day of battle was come1 there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with ,saul and ,jonathan1 except ,saul and ,jonathan his son4 #ac3bc4 ,and the army of the ,philistines went out in order to advance further in ,machmas4 #a ,kings ,chapter #ad ,jonathan attacketh the ,philistines4 ,a miraculous victory4 ,saul's unadvised oath1 by which ,jonathan is put in danger of his life1 but is delivered by the people4 #ad3a4 ,now it came to pass one day that ,jonathan1 the son of ,saul1 said to the young man that bore his armour3 ,come1 and let us go over to the garrison of the ,philistines1 which is on the other side of yonder place4 ,but he told not this to his father4 #ad3b4 ,and ,saul abode in the uttermost part of ,gabaa1 under the pomegranate tree1 which was in ,magron3 and the people with him were about six hundred men4 #ad3c4 ,and ,achias1 the son of ,achitob1 brother of ,ichabod the son of ,phinees1 the son of ,heli1 the priest of the ,lord in ,silo1 wore the ephod4 ,and the people knew not whither ,jonathan was gone4 #ad3d4 ,now there were between the ascents1 by which ,jonathan sought to go over to the garrison of the ,philistines1 rocks standing up on both sides1 and steep cliffs like teeth on the one side1 and on the other1 the name of the one was ,boses1 and the name of the other was ,sene3 #ad3e4 ,one rock stood out toward the north1 over against ,machmas1 and the other to the south1 over against ,gabaa4 #ad3f4 ,and ,jonathan said to the young man that bore his armour3 ,come1 let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised1 it may be the ,lord will do for us3 because it is easy for the ,lord to save either by many1 or by few4 #ad3g4 ,and his armourbearer said to him3 ,do all that pleaseth thy mind3 go whither thou wilt1 and ,i will be with thee wheresoever thou hast a mind4 #ad3h4 ,and ,jonathan said3 ,behold we will go over to these men4 ,and when we shall be seen by them1 #ad3i4 ,if they shall speak thus to us3 ,stay till we come to you3 let us stand still in our place1 and not go up to them4 #ad3aj4 ,but if they shall say3 ,come up to us3 let us go up1 because the ,lord hath delivered them into our hands1 this shall be a sign unto us4 ,this shall be a sign444 ,it is likely ,jonathan was instructed by divine inspiration to make a choice of this sign3 otherwise the observation of omens is superstitious and sinful4 #ad3aa4 ,so both of them discovered themselves to the garrison of the ,philistines3 and the ,philistines said3 ,behold the ,hebrews come forth out of the holes wherein they were hid4 #ad3ab4 ,and the men of the garrison spoke to ,jonathan1 and to his armourbearer1 and said3 ,come up to us1 and we will shew you a thing4 ,and ,jonathan said to his armourbearer3 ,let us go up1 follow me3 for the ,lord hath delivered them into the hands of ,israel4 #ad3ac4 ,and ,jonathan went up creeping on his hands and feet1 and his armourbearer after him4 ,and some fell before ,jonathan1 others his armourbearer slew as he followed him4 #ad3ad4 ,and the first slaughter which ,jonathan and his armourbearer made1 was of about twenty men1 within half an acre of land1 which a yoke of oxen is wont to plough in a day4 #ad3ae4 ,and there was a miracle in the camp1 in the fields3 and all the people of their garrison1 who had gone out to plunder1 were amazed1 and the earth trembled3 and it happened as a miracle from ,god4 #ad3af4 ,and the watchmen of ,saul1 who were in ,gabaa of ,benjamin looked1 and behold a multitude overthrown1 and fleeing this way and that4 #ad3ag4 ,and ,saul said to the people that were with him3 ,look1 and see who is gone from us4 ,and when they had sought1 it was found that ,jonathan and his armourbearer were not there4 #ad3ah4 ,and ,saul said to ,achias3 ,bring the ark of the ,lord4 7,for the ark of ,god was there that day with the children of ,israel47 #ad3ai4 ,and while ,saul spoke to the priest1 there arose a great uproar in the camp of the ,philistines3 and it increased by degrees1 and was heard more clearly4 ,and ,saul said to the priest3 ,draw in thy hand4 #ad3bj4 ,then ,saul1 and all the people that were with him1 shouted together1 and they came to the place of the fight3 and behold every man's sword was turned upon his neighbour1 and there was a very great slaughter4 #ad3ba4 ,moreover1 the ,hebrews that had been with the ,philistines yesterday and the day before1 and went up with them into the camp1 returned to be with the ,israelites1 who were with ,saul and ,jonathan4 #ad3bb4 ,and all the ,israelites that had hid themselves in mount ,ephraim1 hearing that the ,philistines fled1 joined themselves with their countrymen in the fight4 ,and there were with ,saul about ten thousand men4 #ad3bc4 ,and the ,lord saved ,israel that day4 ,and the fight went on as far as ,bethaven4 #ad3bd4 ,and the men of ,israel were joined together that day3 and ,saul adjured the people1 saying3 ,cursed be the man that shall eat food till evening1 till ,i be revenged of my enemies4 ,so none of the people tasted any food4 #ad3be4 ,and all the common people came into a forest1 in which there was honey upon the ground4 #ad3bf4 ,and when the people came into the forest1 behold the honey dropped1 but no man put his hand to his mouth4 ,for the people feared the oath4 #ad3bg4 ,but ,jonathan had not heard when his father adjured the people3 and he put forth the end of the rod1 which he had in his hand1 and dipt it in a honeycomb3 and he carried his hand to his mouth1 and his eyes were enlightened4 #ad3bh4 ,and one of the people answering1 said3 ,thy father hath bound the people with an oath1 saying3 ,cursed be the man that shall eat any food this day4 7,and the people were faint47 #ad3bi4 ,and ,jonathan said3 ,my father hath troubled the land3 you have seen yourselves that my eyes are enlightened1 because ,i tasted a little of this honey3 #ad3cj4 ,how much more if the people had eaten of the prey of their enemies1 which they found8 had there not been made a greater slaughter among the ,philistines8 #ad3ca4 ,so they smote that day the ,philistines1 from ,machmas to ,aialon4 ,and the people were wearied exceedingly4 #ad3cb4 ,and falling upon the spoils1 they took sheep1 and oxen1 and calves1 and slew them on the ground3 and the people ate them with the blood4 #ad3cc4 ,and they told ,saul that the people had sinned against the ,lord1 eating with the blood4 ,and he said3 ,you have transgressed3 roll here to me now a great stone4 #ad3cd4 ,and ,saul said3 ,disperse yourselves among the people1 and tell them to bring me every man his ox and his ram and slay them upon this stone1 and eat1 and you shall not sin against the ,lord1 in eating with the blood4 ,so all the people brought every man his ox with him till the night3 and slew them there4 #ad3ce4 ,and ,saul built an altar to the ,lord3 and he then first began to build an altar to the ,lord4 #ad3cf4 ,and ,saul said3 ,let us fall upon the ,philistines by night1 and destroy them till the morning light1 and let us not leave a man of them4 ,and the people said3 ,do all that seemeth good in thy eyes4 ,and the priest said3 ,let us draw near hither unto ,god4 #ad3cg4 ,and ,saul consulted the ,lord3 ,shall ,i pursue after the ,philistines8 wilt thou deliver them into the hands of ,israel8 ,and he answered him not that day4 #ad3ch4 ,and ,saul said3 ,bring hither all the corners of the people3 and know1 and see by whom this sin hath happened to day4 #ad3ci4 ,as the ,lord liveth1 who is the ,saviour of ,israel1 if it was done by ,jonathan1 my son1 he shall surely die4 ,in this none of the people gainsayed him4 #ad3dj4 ,and he said to all ,israel3 ,be you on one side and ,i1 with ,jonathan1 my son1 will be on the other side4 ,and the people answered ,saul3 ,do what seemeth good in thy eyes4 #ad3da4 ,and ,saul said to the ,lord3 ,o ,lord ,god of ,israel1 give a sign1 by which we may know1 what the meaning is1 that thou answerest not thy servant to day3 ,if this iniquity be in me1 or in my son ,jonathan1 give a proof3 or if this iniquity be in thy people1 give holiness4 ,and ,jonathan and ,saul were taken1 and the people escaped4 #ad3db4 ,and ,saul said3 ,cast lots between me1 and ,jonathan1 my son4 ,and ,jonathan was taken4 ,jonathan was taken444 ,though ,jonathan was excused from sin1 through ignorance of the prohibition1 yet ,god was pleased on this occasion to let the lot fall upon him1 to shew unto all the great obligation of obedience to princes and parents4 #ad3dc4 ,and ,saul said to ,jonathan3 ,tell me what thou hast done4 ,and ,jonathan told him1 and said3 ,i did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod1 which was in my hand1 and behold ,i must die4 #ad3dd4 ,and ,saul said3 ,may ,god do so and so to me1 and add still more3 for dying thou shalt die1 ,o ,jonathan4 #ad3de4 ,and the people said to ,saul3 ,shall ,jonathan then die1 who hath wrought this great salvation in ,israel8 this must not be3 ,as the ,lord liveth1 there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground1 for he hath wrought with ,god this day4 ,so the people delivered ,jonathan1 that he should not die4 #ad3df4 ,and ,saul went back1 and did not pursue after the ,philistines3 and the ,philistines went to their own places4 #ad3dg4 ,and ,saul having his kingdom established over ,israel1 fought against all his enemies round about1 against ,moab1 and against the children of ,ammon1 and ,edom1 and the kings of ,soba1 and the ,philistines3 and whithersoever he turned himself1 he overcame4 #ad3dh4 ,and gathering together an army1 he defeated ,amalec1 and delivered ,israel from the hand of them that spoiled them4 #ad3di4 ,and the sons of ,saul1 were ,jonathan1 and ,jessui1 and ,melchisua3 and the names of his two daughters1 the name of the firstborn was ,merob1 and the name of the younger ,michol4 #ad3ej4 ,and the name of ,saul's wife was ,achinoam1 the daughter of ,achimaas2 and the name of the captain of his army was ,abner1 the son of ,ner1 the cousin german of ,saul4 #ad3ea4 ,for ,cis was the father of ,saul1 and ,ner1 the father of ,abner1 was son of ,abiel4 #ad3eb4 ,and there was a great war against the ,philistines all the days of ,saul4 ,for whomsoever ,saul saw to be a valiant man1 and fit for war1 he took him to himself4 #a ,kings ,chapter #ae ,saul is sent to destroy ,amalec3 he spareth their king and the best of their cattle3 for which disobedience he is cast off by the ,lord4 #ae3a4 ,and ,samuel said to ,saul3 ,the ,lord sent me to anoint thee king over his people ,israel3 now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the ,lord3 #ae3b4 ,thus saith the ,lord of hosts3 ,i have reckoned up all that ,amalec hath done to ,israel3 how he opposed them in the way when they came up out of ,egypt4 #ae3c4 ,now therefore go1 and smite ,amalec1 and utterly destroy all that he hath3 spare him not1 nor covet anything that is his3 but slay both man and woman1 child and suckling1 ox and sheep1 camel and ass4 ,child444 ,the great ,master of life and death 7who cuts off one half of all mankind whilst they are children7 has been pleased sometimes to ordain that children should be put to the sword1 in detestation of the crimes of their parents1 and that they might not live to follow the same wicked ways4 ,but without such ordinance of ,god it is not allowable1 in any wars1 how just soever1 to kill children4 #ae3d4 ,so ,saul commanded the people1 and numbered them as lambs3 two hundred thousand footmen1 and ten thousand of the men of ,juda4 #ae3e4 ,and when ,saul was come to the city of ,amalec1 he laid ambushes in the torrent4 #ae3f4 ,and ,saul said to the ,cinite3 ,go1 depart1 and get ye down from ,amalec3 lest ,i destroy thee with him4 ,for thou hast shewn kindness to all the children of ,israel1 when they came up out of ,egypt4 ,and the ,cinite departed from the midst of ,amalec4 #ae3g4 ,and ,saul smote ,amalec from ,hevila1 until thou comest to ,sur1 which is over against ,egypt4 #ae3h4 ,and he took ,agag1 the king of ,amalec1 alive3 but all the common people he slew with the edge of the sword4 #ae3i4 ,and ,saul and the people spared ,agag1 and the best of the flocks of sheep1 and of the herds1 and the garments and the rams1 and all that was beautiful1 and would not destroy them3 but every thing that was vile1 and good for nothing1 that they destroyed4 #ae3aj4 ,and the word of the ,lord came to ,samuel1 #ae3aa4 ,it repenteth me that ,i have made ,saul king3 for he hath forsaken me1 and hath not executed my commandments4 ,and ,samuel was grieved1 and he cried unto the ,lord all night4 #ae3ab4 ,and when ,samuel rose early1 to go to ,saul in the morning1 it was told ,samuel that ,saul was come to ,carmel1 and had erected for himself a triumphant arch1 and returning had passed on1 and gone down to ,galgal4 ,and ,samuel came to ,saul1 and ,saul was offering a holocaust to the ,lord1 out of the choicest of the spoils1 which he had brought from ,amalec4 #ae3ac4 ,and when ,samuel was come to ,saul1 ,saul said to him3 ,blessed be thou of the ,lord1 ,i have fulfilled the word of the ,lord4 #ae3ad4 ,and ,samuel said3 ,what meaneth then this bleating of the flocks1 which soundeth in my ears1 and the lowing of the herds1 which ,i hear8 #ae3ae4 ,and ,saul said3 ,they have brought them from ,amalec3 for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the herds1 that they might be sacrificed to the ,lord thy ,god1 but the rest we have slain4 #ae3af4 ,and ,samuel said to ,saul3 ,suffer me1 and ,i will tell thee what the ,lord hath said to me this night4 ,and he said to him3 ,speak4 #ae3ag4 ,and ,samuel said3 ,when thou wast a little one in thy own eyes1 wast thou not made the head of the tribes of ,israel8 ,and the ,lord anointed thee to be king over ,israel4 #ae3ah4 ,and the ,lord sent thee on the way1 and said3 ,go1 and kill the sinners of ,amalec1 and thou shalt fight against them until thou hast utterly destroyed them4 #ae3ai4 ,why then didst thou not hearken to the voice of the ,lord3 but hast turned to the prey1 and hast done evil in the eyes of the ,lord8 #ae3bj4 ,and ,saul said to ,samuel3 ,yea1 ,i have hearkened to the voice of the ,lord1 and have walked in the way by which the ,lord sent me1 and have brought ,agag1 the king of ,amalec1 and ,amalec ,i have slain4 #ae3ba4 ,but the people took of the spoils1 sheep and oxen1 as the firstfruits of those things that were slain1 to offer sacrifice to the ,lord their ,god in ,galgal4 #ae3bb4 ,and ,samuel said3 ,doth the ,lord desire holocausts and victims1 and not rather that the voice of the ,lord should be obeyed8 ,for obedience is better than sacrifices3 and to hearken rather than to offer the fat or rams4 #ae3bc4 ,because it is like the sin of witchcraft1 to rebel3 and like the crime of idolatry1 to refuse to obey4 ,forasmuch1 therefore1 as thou hast rejected the word of the ,lord1 the ,lord hath also rejected thee from being king4 #ae3bd4 ,and ,saul said to ,samuel3 ,i have sinned1 because ,i have transgressed the commandment of the ,lord1 and thy words1 fearing the people1 and obeying their voice4 #ae3be4 ,but now bear1 ,i beseech thee1 my sin1 and return with me1 that ,i may adore the ,lord4 #ae3bf4 ,and ,samuel said to ,saul3 ,i will not return with thee1 because thou hath rejected the word of the ,lord1 and the ,lord hath rejected thee from being king over ,israel4 #ae3bg4 ,and ,samuel turned about to go away3 but he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle1 and it rent4 #ae3bh4 ,and ,samuel said to him3 ,the ,lord hath rent the kingdom of ,israel from thee this day1 and hath given it to thy neighbour who is better than thee4 #ae3bi4 ,but the triumpher in ,israel will not spare1 and will not be moved to repentance3 for he is not a man that he should repent4 #ae3cj4 ,then he said3 ,i have sinned3 yet honour me now before the ancients of my people1 and before ,israel1 and return with me1 that ,i may adore the ,lord thy ,god4 #ae3ca4 ,so ,samuel turned again after ,saul3 and ,saul adored the ,lord4 #ae3cb4 ,and ,samuel said3 ,bring hither to me ,agag1 the king of ,amalec4 ,and ,agag was presented to him very fat1 and trembling4 ,and ,agag said3 ,doth bitter death separate in this manner8 #ae3cc4 ,and ,samuel said3 ,as thy sword hath made women childless1 so shall thy mother be childless among women4 ,and ,samuel hewed him in pieces before the ,lord in ,galgal4 #ae3cd4 ,and ,samuel departed to ,ramatha3 but ,saul went up to his house in ,gabaa4 #ae3ce4 ,and ,samuel saw ,saul no more till the day of his death3 nevertheless1 ,samuel mourned for ,saul1 because the ,lord repented that he had made him king over ,israel4 ,saw ,saul no more till the day of his death444 ,that is1 he went no more to see him3 he visited him no more4 #a ,kings ,chapter #af ,samuel is sent to ,bethlehem1 where he anointeth ,david3 who is taken into ,saul's family4 #af3a4 ,and the ,lord said to ,samuel3 ,how long wilt thou mourn for ,saul1 whom ,i have rejected from reigning over ,israel8 fill thy horn with oil1 and come1 that ,i may send thee to ,isai1 the ,bethlehemite3 for ,i have provided me a king among his sons4 #af3b4 ,and ,samuel said3 ,how shall ,i go8 for ,saul will hear of it1 and he will kill me4 ,and the ,lord said3 ,thou shalt take with thee a calf of the herd1 and thou shalt say3 ,i am come to sacrifice to the ,lord4 #af3c4 ,and thou shalt call ,isai to the sacrifice1 and ,i will shew thee what thou art to do1 and thou shalt anoint him whom ,i shall shew to thee4 #af3d4 ,then ,samuel did as the ,lord had said to him4 ,and he came to ,bethlehem1 and the ancients of the city wondered1 and meeting him1 they said3 ,is thy coming hither peaceable8 #af3e4 ,and he said3 ,it is peaceable3 ,i am come to offer sacrifice to the ,lord1 be ye sanctified1 and come with me to the sacrifice4 ,and he sanctified ,isai and his sons1 and called them to the sacrifice4 #af3f4 ,and when they were come in1 he saw ,eliab1 and said3 ,is the ,lord's anointed before him8 #af3g4 ,and the ,lord said to ,samuel3 ,look not on his countenance1 nor on the height of his stature3 because ,i have rejected him1 nor do ,i judge according to the look of man3 for man seeth those things that appear1 but the ,lord beholdeth the heart4 #af3h4 ,and ,isai called ,abinadab1 and brought him before ,samuel4 ,and he said3 ,neither hath the ,lord chosen this1 #af3i4 ,and ,isai brought ,samma1 and he said of him3 ,neither hath the ,lord chosen this4 #af3aj4 ,isai therefore brought his seven sons before ,samuel3 and ,samuel said to ,isai3 ,the ,lord hath not chosen any one of these4 #af3aa4 ,and ,samuel said to ,isai3 ,are here all thy sons8 ,he answered3 ,there remaineth yet a young one1 who keepeth the sheep4 ,and ,samuel said to ,isai3 ,send1 and fetch him3 for we will not sit down till he come hither4 #af3ab4 ,he sent therefore and brought him4 ,now he was ruddy and beautiful to behold1 and of a comely face4 ,and the ,lord said3 ,arise1 and anoint him1 for this is he4 #af3ac4 ,then ,samuel took the horn of oil1 and anointed him in the midst of his brethren3 and the ,spirit of the ,lord came upon ,david from that day forward3 and ,samuel rose up1 and went to ,ramatha4 #af3ad4 ,but the ,spirit of the ,lord departed from ,saul1 and an evil spirit from the ,lord troubled him4 ,from the ,lord444 ,an evil spirit1 by divine permission1 and for his punishment1 either possessed or obsessed him4 #af3ae4 ,and the servants of ,saul said to him3 ,behold now an evil spirit from ,god troubleth thee4 #af3af4 ,let our lord give orders1 and thy servants who are before thee1 will seek out a man skilful in playing on the harp1 that when the evil spirit from the ,lord is upon thee1 he may play with his hand1 and thou mayst bear it more easily4 #af3ag4 ,and ,saul said to his servants3 ,provide me then some man that can play well1 and bring him to me4 #af3ah4 ,and one of the servants answering1 said3 ,behold ,i have seen a son of ,isai1 the ,bethlehemite1 a skilful player1 and one of great strength1 and a man fit for war1 and prudent in his words1 and a comely person3 and the ,lord is with him4 #af3ai4 ,then ,saul sent messengers to ,isai1 saying3 ,send me ,david1 thy son1 who is in the pastures4 #af3bj4 ,and ,isai took an ass laden with bread1 and a bottle of wine1 and a kid of the flock1 and sent them by the hand of ,david1 his son1 to ,saul4 #af3ba4 ,and ,david came to ,saul1 and stood before him3 and he loved him exceedingly1 and made him his armourbearer4 #af3bb4 ,and ,saul sent to ,isai1 saying3 ,let ,david stand before me3 for he hath found favour in my sight4 #af3bc4 ,so whensoever the evil spirit from the ,lord was upon ,saul1 ,david took his harp1 and played with his hand1 and ,saul was refreshed1 and was better1 for the evil spirit departed from him4 ,departed from him444 ,chased away by ,david's devotion4 #a ,kings ,chapter #ag ,war with the ,philistines4 ,goliath challengeth ,israel4 ,he is slain by ,david4 #ag3a4 ,now the ,philistines gathering together their troops to battle1 assembled at ,socho of ,juda3 and camped between ,socho and ,azeca1 in the borders of ,dommim4 #ag3b4 ,and ,saul and the children of ,israel being gathered together1 came to the valley of ,terebinth1 and they set the army in array to fight against the ,philistines4 #ag3c4 ,and the ,philistines stood on a mountain on the one side1 and ,israel stood on a mountain on the other side3 and there was a valley between them4 #ag3d4 ,and there went out a man baseborn from the camp of the ,philistines1 named ,goliath1 of ,geth1 whose height was six cubits and a span3 #ag3e4 ,and he had a helmet of brass upon his head1 and he was clothed with a coat of mail with scales1 and the weight of his coat of mail was five thousand sicles of brass3 #ag3f4 ,and he had greaves of brass on his legs1 and a buckler of brass covered his shoulders4 #ag3g4 ,and the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam1 and the head of his spear weighed six hundred sicles of iron3 and his armourbearer went before him4 #ag3h4 ,and standing1 he cried out to the bands of ,israel1 and said to them3 ,why are you come out prepared to fight8 am not ,i a ,philistine1 and you the servants of ,saul8 ,choose out a man of you1 and let him come down and fight hand to hand4 #ag3i4 ,if he be able to fight with me1 and kill me1 we will be servants to you3 but if ,i prevail against him1 and kill him1 you shall be servants1 and shall serve us4 #ag3aj4 ,and the ,philistine said3 ,i have defied the bands of ,israel this day3 give me a man1 and let him fight with me hand to hand4 #ag3aa4 ,and ,saul and all the ,israelites hearing these words of the ,philistine1 were dismayed1 and greatly afraid4 #ag3ab4 ,now ,david was the son of that ,ephrathite1 of ,bethlehem ,juda1 before mentioned1 whose name was ,isai1 who had eight sons1 and was an old man in the days of ,saul1 and of great age among men4 #ag3ac4 ,and his three eldest sons followed ,saul to the battle3 and the names of his three sons that went to the battle1 were ,eliab1 the firstborn1 and the second1 ,abinadab1 and the third ,samma3 #ag3ad4 ,but ,david was the youngest4 ,so the three eldest having followed ,saul1 #ag3ae4 ,david went1 and returned from ,saul1 to feed his father's flock at ,bethlehem4 #ag3af4 ,now the ,philistine came out morning and evening1 and presented himself forty days4 #ag3ag4 ,and ,isai said to ,david1 his son3 ,take for thy brethren an ephi of frumenty1 and these ten loaves1 and run to the camp to thy brethren1 #ag3ah4 ,and carry these ten little cheeses to the tribune3 and go see thy brethren1 if they are well3 and learn with whom they are placed4 #ag3ai4 ,but ,saul1 and they1 and all the children of ,israel1 were in the valley of ,terebinth1 fighting against the ,philistines4 #ag3bj4 ,david1 therefore1 arose in the morning1 and gave the charge of the flock to the keeper3 and went away loaded1 as ,isai had commanded him4 ,and he came to the place of ,magala1 and to the army1 which was going out to fight1 and shouted for the battle4 #ag3ba4 ,for ,israel had put themselves in array1 and the ,philistines who stood against them were prepared4 #ag3bb4 ,and ,david leaving the vessels which he had brought1 under the care of the keeper of the baggage1 ran to the place of the battle1 and asked if all things went well with his brethren4 #ag3bc4 ,and as he talked with them1 that baseborn man1 whose name was ,goliath1 the ,philistine1 of ,geth1 shewed himself coming up from the camp of the ,philistines3 and he spoke according to the same words1 and ,david heard them1 #ag3bd4 ,and all the ,israelites1 when they saw the man1 fled from his face1 fearing him exceedingly4 #ag3be4 ,and some one of ,israel said3 ,have you seen this man that is come up1 for he is come up to defy ,israel4 ,and the man that shall slay him1 the king will enrich with great riches1 and will give him his daughter1 and will make his father's house free from tribute in ,israel4 #ag3bf4 ,and ,david spoke to the men that stood by him1 saying3 ,what shall be given to the man that shall kill this ,philistine1 and shall take away the reproach from ,israel8 for who is this uncircumcised ,philistine1 that he should defy the armies of the living ,god8 #ag3bg4 ,and the people answered him the same words1 saying3 ,these things shall be given to the man that shall slay him4 #ag3bh4 ,now when ,eliab his eldest brother heard this1 when he was speaking with others1 he was angry with ,david1 and said3 ,why camest thou hither8 and why didst thou leave those few sheep in the desert8 ,i know thy pride1 and the wickedness of thy heart3 that thou art come down to see the battle4 #ag3bi4 ,and ,david said3 ,what have ,i done8 is there not cause to speak8 #ag3cj4 ,and he turned a little aside from him to another3 and said the same word4 ,and the people answered him as before4 #ag3ca4 ,and the words which ,david spoke were heard1 and were rehearsed before ,saul4 #ag3cb4 ,and when he was brought to ,saul1 he said to him4 ,let not any man's heart be dismayed in him3 ,i thy servant will go1 and will fight against the ,philistine4 #ag3cc4 ,and ,saul said to ,david3 ,thou art not able to withstand this ,philistine1 nor to fight against him3 for thou art but a boy1 but he is a warrior from his youth4 #ag3cd4 ,and ,david said to ,saul3 ,thy servant kept his father's sheep1 and there came a lion1 or a bear1 and took a ram out of the midst of the flock3 #ag3ce4 ,and ,i pursued after them1 and struck them1 and delivered it out of their mouth3 and they rose up against me1 and ,i caught them by the throat1 and ,i strangled1 and killed them4 #ag3cf4 ,for ,i thy servant have killed both a lion and a bear3 and this uncircumcised ,philistine shall be also as one of them4 ,i will go now1 and take away the reproach of the people3 for who is this uncircumcised ,philistine1 who hath dared to curse the army of the living ,god8 #ag3cg4 ,and ,david said3 ,the ,lord who delivered me out of the paw of the lion1 and out of the paw of the bear1 he will deliver me out of the hand of this ,philistine4 ,and ,saul said to ,david3 ,go1 and the ,lord be with thee4 #ag3ch4 ,and ,saul clothed ,david with his garments1 and put a helmet of brass upon his head1 and armed him with a coat of mail4 #ag3ci4 ,and ,david having girded his sword upon his armour1 began to try if he could walk in armour3 for he was not accustomed to it4 ,and ,david said to ,saul3 ,i cannot go thus1 for ,i am not used to it4 ,and he laid them off1 #ag3dj4 ,and he took his staff1 which he had always in his hands3 and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook1 and put them into the shepherd's scrip1 which he had with him1 and he took a sling in his hand1 and went forth against the ,philistine4 #ag3da4 ,and the ,philistine came on1 and drew nigh against ,david1 and his armourbearer went before him4 #ag3db4 ,and when the ,philistine looked1 and beheld ,david1 he despised him4 ,for he was a young man1 ruddy1 and of a comely countenance4 #ag3dc4 ,and the ,philistine said to ,david3 ,am ,i a dog1 that thou comest to me with a staff8 ,and the ,philistine cursed ,david by his gods4 #ag3dd4 ,and he said to ,david3 ,come to me1 and ,i will give thy flesh to the birds of the air1 and to the beasts of the earth4 #ag3de4 ,and ,david said to the ,philistine3 ,thou comest to me with a sword1 and with a spear1 and with a shield3 but ,i come to thee in the name of the ,lord of hosts1 the ,god of the armies of ,israel1 which thou hast defied4 #ag3df4 ,this day1 and the ,lord will deliver thee into my hand1 and ,i will slay thee1 and take away thy head from thee3 and ,i will give the carcasses of the army of the ,philistines this day to the birds of the air1 and to the beasts of the earth3 that all the earth may know that there is a ,god in ,israel4 #ag3dg4 ,and all this assembly shall know that the ,lord saveth not with sword and spear3 for it is his battle1 and he will deliver you into our hands4 #ag3dh4 ,and when the ,philistine arose1 and was coming1 and drew nigh to meet ,david1 ,david made haste1 and ran to the fight to meet the ,philistine4 #ag3di4 ,and he put his hand into his scrip1 and took a stone1 and cast it with the sling1 and fetching it about1 struck the ,philistine in the forehead1 and he fell on his face upon the earth4 #ag3ej4 ,and ,david prevailed over the ,philistine1 with a sling and a stone1 and he struck1 and slew the ,philistine4 ,and as ,david had no sword in his hand1 #ag3ea4 ,he ran1 and stood over the ,philistine1 and took his sword1 and drew it out of the sheath1 and slew him1 and cut off his head4 ,and the ,philistines seeing that their champion was dead1 fled away4 #ag3eb4 ,and the men of ,israel and ,juda rising up shouted1 and pursued after the ,philistines till they came to the valley and to the gates of ,accaron1 and there fell many wounded of the ,philistines in the way of ,saraim1 and as far as ,geth1 and as far as ,accaron4 #ag3ec4 ,and the children of ,israel returning1 after they had pursued the ,philistines1 fell upon their camp4 #ag3ed4 ,and ,david taking the head of the ,philistine1 brought it to ,jerusalem3 but his armour he put in his tent4 #ag3ee4 ,now at the time that ,saul saw ,david going out against the ,philistines1 he said to ,abner1 the captain of the army3 ,of what family is this young man descended1 ,abner8 ,and ,abner said3 ,as thy soul liveth1 ,o king1 ,i know not4 #ag3ef4 ,and the king said3 ,inquire thou1 whose son this young man is4 #ag3eg4 ,and when ,david was returned1 after the ,philistine was slain1 ,abner took him1 and brought him in before ,saul1 with the head of the ,philistine in his hand4 #ag3eh4 ,and ,saul said to him3 ,young man1 of what family art thou8 ,and ,david said3 ,i am the son of thy servant ,isai the ,bethlehemite4 #a ,kings ,chapter #ah ,the friendship of ,jonathan and ,david4 ,the envy of ,saul1 and his design upon ,david's life4 ,he marrieth him to his daughter ,michol4 #ah3a4 ,and it came to pass1 when he had made an end of speaking to ,saul1 the son of ,jonathan was knit with the soul of ,david1 and ,jonathan loved him as his own soul4 #ah3b4 ,and ,saul took him that day1 and would not let him return to his father's house4 #ah3c4 ,and ,david and ,jonathan made a covenant1 for he loved him as his own soul4 #ah3d4 ,and ,jonathan stripped himself of the coat with which he was clothed1 and gave it to ,david1 and the rest of his garments1 even to his sword1 and to his bow1 and to his girdle4 #ah3e4 ,and ,david went out to whatsoever business ,saul sent him1 and he behaved himself prudently3 and ,saul set him over the soldiers1 and he was acceptable in the eyes of all the people1 and especially in the eyes of ,saul's servants4 #ah3f4 ,now when ,david returned1 after he slew the ,philistine1 the women came out of all the cities of ,israel1 singing and dancing1 to meet king ,saul1 with timbrels of joy1 and cornets4 #ah3g4 ,and the women sung as they played1 and they said3 ,saul slew his thousands1 and ,david his ten thousands4 #ah3h4 ,and ,saul was exceeding angry1 and this word was displeasing in his eyes1 and he said3 ,they have given ,david ten thousands1 and to me they have given but a thousand1 what can he have more but the kingdom8 #ah3i4 ,and ,saul did not look on ,david with a good eye from that day and forward4 #ah3aj4 ,and the day after1 the evil spirit from ,god came upon ,saul1 and he prophesied in the midst of his house4 ,and ,david played with his hand as at other times4 ,and ,saul held a spear in his hand1 ,prophesied444 ,acted the prophet in a mad manner4 #ah3aa4 ,and threw it1 thinking to nail ,david to the wall3 and ,david stept aside out of his presence twice4 #ah3ab4 ,and ,saul feared ,david1 because the ,lord was with him1 and was departed from ,saul himself4 #ah3ac4 ,therefore ,saul removed him from him1 and made him a captain over a thousand men1 and he went out and came in before the people4 #ah3ad4 ,and ,david behaved wisely in all his ways1 and the ,lord was with him4 #ah3ae4 ,and ,saul saw that he was exceeding prudent1 and began to beware of him4 #ah3af4 ,but all ,israel and ,juda loved ,david1 for he came in and went out before them4 #ah3ag4 ,and ,saul said to ,david3 ,behold my elder daughter ,merob1 her will ,i give thee to wife3 only be a valiant man1 and fight the battles of the ,lord4 ,now ,saul said within himself3 ,let not my hand be upon him1 but let the hands of the ,philistines be upon him4 #ah3ah4 ,and ,david said to ,saul3 ,who am ,i1 or what is my life1 or my father's family in ,israel1 that ,i should be son in law of the king8 #ah3ai4 ,and it came to pass at the time when ,merob1 the daughter of ,saul1 should have been given to ,david1 that she was given to ,hadriel1 the ,molathite1 to wife4 #ah3bj4 ,but ,michol1 the other daughter of ,saul1 loved ,david4 ,and it was told ,saul1 and it pleased him4 #ah3ba4 ,and ,saul said3 ,i will give her to him1 that she may be a stumblingblock to him1 and that the hand of the ,philistines may be upon him4 ,and ,saul said to ,david3 ,in two things thou shalt be my son in law this day4 #ah3bb4 ,and ,saul commanded his servants to speak to ,david privately1 saying3 ,behold1 thou pleasest the king1 and all his servants love thee4 ,now1 therefore be the king's son in law4 #ah3bc4 ,and the servants of ,saul spoke all these words in the ear of ,david4 ,and ,david said3 ,doth it seem to you a small matter to be the king's son in law8 ,but ,i am a poor man1 and of small ability4 #ah3bd4 ,and the servants of ,saul told him1 saying3 ,such words as these hath ,david spoken4 #ah3be4 ,and ,saul said3 ,speak thus to ,david3 ,the king desireth not any dowry1 but only a hundred foreskins of the ,philistines1 to be avenged of the king's enemies4 ,now ,saul thought to deliver ,david into the hands of the ,philistines4 #ah3bf4 ,and when his servants had told ,david the words that ,saul had said1 the word was pleasing in the eyes of ,david to be the king's son in law4 #ah3bg4 ,and after a few days ,david rose up1 and went with the men that were under him1 and he slew of the ,philistines two hundred men1 and brought their foreskins and numbered them out to the king1 that he might be his son in law4 ,saul therefore gave him ,michol1 his daughter1 to wife4 #ah3bh4 ,and ,saul saw1 and understood that the ,lord was with ,david4 ,and ,michol1 the daughter of ,saul1 loved him4 #ah3bi4 ,and ,saul began to fear ,david more3 and ,saul became ,david's enemy continually4 #ah3cj4 ,and the princes of the ,philistines went forth3 and from the beginning of their going forth1 ,david behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of ,saul1 and his name became very famous4 #a ,kings ,chapter #ai ,other attempts of ,saul upon ,david's life4 ,he cometh to ,samuel4 ,saul's messengers1 and ,saul himself prophesy4 #ai3a4 ,and ,saul spoke to ,jonathan1 his son1 and to all his servants1 that they should kill ,david4 ,but ,jonathan1 the son of ,saul1 loved ,david exceedingly4 #ai3b4 ,and ,jonathan told ,david1 saying3 ,saul1 my father1 seeketh to kill thee3 wherefore look to thyself1 ,i beseech thee1 in the morning and thou shalt abide in a secret place1 and shalt be hid4 #ai3c4 ,and ,i will go out and stand beside my father in the field where thou art3 and ,i will speak of thee to my father1 and whatsoever ,i shall see1 ,i will tell thee4 #ai3d4 ,and ,jonathan spoke good things of ,david to ,saul1 his father3 and said to him3 ,sin not1 ,o king1 against thy servant1 ,david1 because he hath not sinned against thee1 and his works are very good towards thee4 #ai3e4 ,and he put his life in his hand1 and slew the ,philistine1 and the ,lord wrought great salvation for all ,israel4 ,thou sawest it and didst rejoice4 ,why therefore wilt thou sin against innocent blood1 by killing ,david1 who is without fault8 #ai3f4 ,and when ,saul heard this1 he was appeased with the words of ,jonathan1 and swore3 ,as the ,lord liveth1 he shall not be slain4 #ai3g4 ,then ,jonathan called ,david1 and told him all these words3 and ,jonathan brought in ,david to ,saul1 and he was before him1 as he had been yesterday and the day before4 #ai3h4 ,and the war began again1 and ,david went out1 and fought against the ,philistines1 and defeated them with a great slaughter1 and they fled from his face4 #ai3i4 ,and the evil spirit from the ,lord came upon ,saul2 and he sat in his house1 and held a spear in his hand3 and ,david played with his hand4 #ai3aj4 ,and ,saul endeavoured to nail ,david to the wall with his spear4 ,and ,david slipt away out of the presence of ,saul3 and the spear missed him1 and was fastened in the wall1 and ,david fled1 and escaped that night4 #ai3aa4 ,saul therefore sent his guards to ,david's house to watch him1 that he might be killed in the morning4 ,and when ,michol1 ,david's wife1 had told him this1 saying3 ,unless thou save thyself this night1 to morrow thou wilt die3 #ai3ab4 ,she let him down through a window4 ,and he went and fled away1 and escaped4 #ai3ac4 ,and ,michol took an image1 and laid it on the bed1 and put a goat's skin1 with the hair at the head of it1 and covered it with clothes4 #ai3ad4 ,and ,saul sent officers to seize ,david2 and it was answered that he was sick4 #ai3ae4 ,and again ,saul sent to see ,david1 saying3 ,bring him to me in the bed1 that he may be slain4 #ai3af4 ,and when the messengers were come in1 they found an image upon the bed1 and a goat skin at his head4 #ai3ag4 ,and ,saul said to ,michol3 ,why hast thou deceived me so1 and let my enemy go and flee away8 ,and ,michol answered ,saul3 ,because he said to me3 ,let me go1 or else ,i will kill thee4 #ai3ah4 ,but ,david fled and escaped1 and came to ,samuel in ,ramatha1 and told him all that ,saul had done to him3 and he and ,samuel went and dwelt in ,najoth4 ,najoth444 ,it was probably a school or college of prophets1 in or near ,ramath under the direction of ,samuel4 #ai3ai4 ,and it was told ,saul by some1 saying3 ,behold ,david is in ,najoth1 in ,ramatha4 #ai3bj4 ,so ,saul sent officers to take ,david3 and when they saw a company of prophets prophesying1 and ,samuel presiding over them1 the ,spirit of the ,lord came also upon them1 and they likewise began to prophesy4 ,prophesying444 ,that is1 singing praises to ,god by a divine impulse4 ,god was pleased on this occasion that both ,samuel's messengers and himself should experience the like impulse1 that he might understand1 by this instance of the divine power1 how vain are the designs of man against him whom ,god protects4 #ai3ba4 ,and when this was told ,saul1 he sent other messengers3 but they also prophesied4 ,and again ,saul sent messengers the third time3 and they prophesied also4 ,and ,saul being exceeding angry1 #ai3bb4 ,went also himself to ,ramatha1 and came as far as the great cistern1 which is in ,socho1 and he asked1 and said3 ,in what place are ,samuel and ,david8 ,and it was told him3 ,behold they are in ,najoth1 in ,ramatha4 #ai3bc4 ,and he went to ,najoth1 in ,ramatha1 and the ,spirit of the ,lord came upon him also1 and he went on1 and prophesied till he came to ,najoth1 in ,ramatha4 #ai3bd4 ,and he stripped himself also of his garments1 and prophesied with the rest before ,samuel1 and lay down naked all that day and night4 ,this gave occasion to a proverb3 ,what6 is ,saul too among the prophets8 #a ,kings ,chapter #bj ,saul being obstinately bent upon killing ,david1 he is sent away by ,jonathan4 #bj3a4 ,but ,david fled from ,najoth1 which is in ,ramatha1 and came and said to ,jonathan3 ,what have ,i done8 what is my iniquity1 and what is my sin against thy father1 that he seeketh my life8 #bj3b4 ,and he said to him3 ,god forbid1 thou shalt not die3 for my father will do nothing1 great or little1 without first telling me3 hath then my father hid this word only from me8 no1 this shall not be4 #bj3c4 ,and he swore again to ,david4 ,and ,david said3 ,thy father certainly knoweth that ,i have found grace in thy sight1 and he will say3 ,let not ,jonathan know this1 lest he be grieved4 ,but truly as the ,lord liveth1 and thy soul liveth1 there is but one step 7as ,i may say7 between me and death4 #bj3d4 ,and ,jonathan said to ,david3 ,whatsoever thy soul shall say to me1 ,i will do for thee4 #bj3e4 ,and ,david said to ,jonathan3 ,behold to morrow is the new moon1 and ,i1 according to custom1 am wont to sit beside the king to eat3 let me go then that ,i may be hid in the field till the evening of the third day4 ,to morrow is the new moon444 ,the neomenia1 or first day of the moon1 kept according to the law1 as a festival2 and therefore ,saul feasted on that day3 and expected the attendance of his family4 #bj3f4 ,if thy father look and inquire for me1 thou shalt answer him3 ,david asked me that he might run to ,bethlehem1 his own city3 because there are solemn sacrifices there for all of his tribe4 #bj3g4 ,if he shall say3 ,it is well3 thy servant shall have peace3 but if he be angry1 know that his malice is come to its height4 #bj3h4 ,deal mercifully then with thy servant3 for thou hast brought me1 thy servant1 into a covenant of the ,lord with thee4 ,but if there be any iniquity in me1 do thou kill me1 and bring me not in to thy father4 #bj3i4 ,and ,jonathan said3 ,far be this from thee3 for if ,i should certainly know that evil is determined by my father against thee1 ,i could do no otherwise than tell thee4 #bj3aj4 ,and ,david answered ,jonathan3 ,who shall bring me word1 if thy father should answer thee harshly concerning me8 #bj3aa4 ,and ,jonathan said to ,david3 ,come1 and let us go out into the field4 ,and when they were both of them gone out into the field1 #bj3ab4 ,jonathan said to ,david3 ,o ,lord ,god of ,israel1 if ,i shall discover my father's mind1 to morrow1 or the day after1 and there be any thing good for ,david1 and ,i send not immediately to thee1 and make it known to thee1 #bj3ac4 ,may the ,lord do so and so to ,jonathan1 and add still more4 ,but if my father shall continue in malice against thee1 ,i will discover it to thy ear1 and will send thee away1 that thou mayst go in peace1 and the ,lord be with thee1 as he hath been with my father4 #bj3ad4 ,and if ,i live1 thou shalt shew me the kindness of the ,lord3 but if ,i die1 #bj3ae4 ,thou shalt not take away thy kindness from my house for ever1 when the ,lord shall have rooted out the enemies of ,david1 every one of them from the earth1 may he take away ,jonathan from his house1 and may the ,lord require it at the hands of ,david's enemies4 ,may he take away ,jonathan1 etc444 ,it is a curse upon himself1 if he should not be faithful to his promise4-,ibid4 ,require it1 etc444 ,that is1 revenge it upon ,david's enemies1 and upon me1 if ,i should fail of my word given to him4 #bj3af4 ,jonathan therefore made a covenant with the house of ,david3 and the ,lord required it at the hands of ,david's enemies4 #bj3ag4 ,and ,jonathan swore again to ,david1 because he loved him3 for he loved him as his own soul4 #bj3ah4 ,and ,jonathan said to him3 ,to morrow is the new moon1 and thou wilt be missed3 #bj3ai4 ,for thy seat will be empty till after to morrow4 ,so thou shalt go down quickly1 and come to the place where thou must he hid1 on the day when it is lawful to work1 and thou shalt remain beside the stone1 which is called ,ezel4 #bj3bj4 ,and ,i will shoot three arrows near it1 and will shoot as if ,i were exercising myself at a mark4 #bj3ba4 ,and ,i will send a boy1 saying to him3 ,go and fetch me the arrows4 #bj3bb4 ,if ,i shall say to the boy3 ,behold the arrows are on this side of thee1 take them up3 come thou to me1 because there is peace to thee1 and there is no evil1 as the ,lord liveth4 ,but if ,i shall speak thus to the boy3 ,behold the arrows are beyond thee3 go in peace1 for the ,lord hath sent thee away4 #bj3bc4 ,and concerning the word which ,i and thou have spoken1 the ,lord be between thee and me forever4 #bj3bd4 ,so ,david was hid in the field1 and the new moon came1 and the king sat down to eat bread4 #bj3be4 ,and when the king sat down upon his chair1 7according to custom7 which was beside the wall1 ,jonathan arose1 and ,abner sat by ,saul's side1 and ,david's place appeared empty4 #bj3bf4 ,and ,saul said nothing that day1 for he thought it might have happened to him1 that he was not clean1 nor purified4 #bj3bg4 ,and when the second day after the new moon was come1 ,david's place appeared empty again4 ,and ,saul said to ,jonathan1 his son3 ,why cometh not the son of ,isai to meat neither yesterday1 nor to day8 #bj3bh4 ,and ,jonathan answered ,saul3 ,he asked leave of me earnestly to go to ,bethlehem4 #bj3bi4 ,and he said3 ,let me go1 for there is a solemn sacrifice in the city1 one of my brethren hath sent for me3 and now if ,i have found favour in thy eyes1 ,i will go quickly1 and see my brethren4 ,for this cause he came not to the king's table4 #bj3cj4 ,then ,saul being angry against ,jonathan1 said to him3 ,thou son of a woman that is the ravisher of a man1 do ,i not know that thou lovest the son of ,isai to thy own confusion1 and to the confusion of thy shameless mother8 #bj3ca4 ,for as long as the son of ,isai liveth upon earth1 thou shalt not be established1 nor thy kingdom4 ,therefore now presently send1 and fetch him to me3 for he is the son of death4 ,the son of death444 ,that is1 one that deserveth death1 and shall surely be put to death4 #bj3cb4 ,and ,jonathan answering ,saul1 his father1 said3 ,why shall he die8 ,what hath he done8 #bj3cc4 ,and ,saul caught up a spear to strike him4 ,and ,jonathan understood that it was determined by his father to kill ,david4 #bj3cd4 ,so ,jonathan rose from the table in great anger1 and did not eat bread on the second day after the new moon4 ,for he was grieved for ,david1 because his father had put him to confusion4 #bj3ce4 ,and when the morning came1 ,jonathan went into the field according to the appointment with ,david1 and a little boy with him4 #bj3cf4 ,and he said to his boy3 ,go1 and fetch me the arrows which ,i shoot4 ,and when the boy ran1 he shot another arrow beyond the boy4 #bj3cg4 ,the boy therefore came to the place of the arrow which ,jonathan had shot3 and ,jonathan cried after the boy1 and said3 ,behold the arrow is there further beyond thee4 #bj3ch4 ,and ,jonathan cried again after the boy1 saying3 ,make haste speedily1 stand not4 ,and ,jonathan's boy gathered up the arrows1 and brought them to his master3 #bj3ci4 ,and he knew not at all what was doing3 for only ,jonathan and ,david knew the matter4 #bj3dj4 ,jonathan therefore gave his arms to the boy1 and said to him3 ,go1 and carry them into the city4 #bj3da4 ,and when the boy was gone1 ,david rose out of his place1 which was toward the south1 and falling on his face to the ground1 adored thrice3 and kissing one another1 they wept together2 but ,david more4 #bj3db4 ,and ,jonathan said to ,david3 ,go in peace3 and let all stand that we have sworn both of us in the name of the ,lord1 saying3 ,the ,lord be between me and thee1 and between my seed and thy seed for ever4 #bj3dc4 ,and ,david arose1 and departed3 and ,jonathan went into the city4 #a ,kings ,chapter #ba ,david receiveth holy bread of ,achimelech1 the priest3 and feigneth himself mad before ,achis1 king of ,geth4 #ba3a4 ,and ,david came to ,nobe1 to ,achimelech1 the priest and ,achimelech was astonished at ,david's coming4 ,and he said to him3 ,why art thou alone1 and no man with thee8 ,nobe444 ,a city in the tribe of ,benjamin1 to which the tabernacle of the ,lord had been translated from ,silo4 #ba3b4 ,and ,david said to ,achimelech1 the priest3 ,the king hath commanded me a business1 and said3 ,let no man know the thing for which thou art sent by me1 and what manner of commands ,i have given thee3 and ,i have appointed my servants to such and such a place4 #ba3c4 ,now therefore if thou have any thing at hand1 though it were but five loaves1 give me1 or whatsoever thou canst find4 #ba3d4 ,and the priest answered ,david1 saying3 ,i have no common bread at hand1 but only holy bread1 if the young men be clean1 especially from women8 ,if the young men be clean1 etc444 ,if this cleanness was required of them that were to eat that bread1 which was a figure of the bread of life which we receive in the blessed sacrament2 how clean ought ,christians to be when they approach to our tremendous mysteries4 ,and what reason hath the church of ,god to admit none to be her ministers to consecrate and daily receive this most pure sacrament1 but such as devote themselves to a life of perpetual purity4 #ba3e4 ,and ,david answered the priest1 and said to him3 ,truly1 as to what concerneth women1 we have refrained ourselves from yesterday and the day before1 when we came out1 and the vessels of the young men were holy4 ,now this way is defiled1 but it shall also be sanctified this day in the vessels4 ,the vessels444 i4 e41 the bodies1 have been holy1 that is1 have been kept from impurity4-,ibid4 ,is defiled444 ,is liable to expose us to dangers of uncleanness4-,ibid4 ,be sanctified1 etc444 ,that is1 we shall take care1 notwithstanding these dangerous circumstances1 to keep our vessels holy1 that is1 to keep our bodies from every thing that may defile us4 #ba3f4 ,the priest therefore gave him hallowed bread3 for there was no bread there1 but only the loaves of proposition1 which had been taken away from before the face of the ,lord1 that hot loaves might be set up4 #ba3g4 ,now a certain man of the servants of ,saul was there that day1 within the tabernacle of the ,lord3 and his name was ,doeg1 an ,edomite1 the chiefest of ,saul's herdsmen4 #ba3h4 ,and ,david said to ,achimelech3 ,hast thou here at hand a spear1 or a sword8 for ,i brought not my own sword1 nor my own weapons with me1 for the king's business required haste4 #ba3i4 ,and the priest said3 ,lo1 here is the sword of ,goliath1 the ,philistine1 whom thou slewest in the valley of ,terebinth1 wrapped up in a cloth behind the ephod3 if thou wilt take this1 take it1 for here there is no other but this4 ,and ,david said3 ,there is none like that1 give it me4 #ba3aj4 ,and ,david arose and fled that day from the face of ,saul3 and came to ,achis1 the king of ,geth3 #ba3aa4 ,and the servants of ,achis1 when they saw ,david1 said to him3 ,is not this ,david1 the king of the land8 ,did they not sing to him in their dances1 saying3 ,saul hath slain his thousands1 and ,david his ten thousands8 #ba3ab4 ,but ,david laid up these words in his heart1 and was exceedingly afraid at the face of ,achis1 the king of ,geth4 #ba3ac4 ,and he changed his countenance before them1 and slipt down between their hands3 and he stumbled against the doors of the gate1 and his spittle ran down upon his beard4 #ba3ad4 ,and ,achis said to his servants3 ,you saw the man was mad3 why have you brought him to me8 #ba3ae4 ,have we need of mad men1 that you have brought in this fellow1 to play the madman in my presence8 shall this fellow come into my house8 #a ,kings ,chapter #bb ,many resort to ,david4 ,doeg accuseth ,achimelech to ,saul4 ,he ordereth him and all the other priests of ,nobe to be slain4 ,abiathar escapeth4 #bb3a4 ,david therefore went from thence1 and fled to the cave of ,odollam4 ,and when his brethren1 and all his father's house1 had heard of it1 they went down to him thither4 #bb3b4 ,and all that were in distress1 and oppressed with debt1 and under affliction of mind1 gathered themselves unto him3 and he became their prince1 and there were with him about four hundred men4 #bb3c4 ,and ,david departed from thence into ,maspha of ,moab3 and he said to the king of ,moab3 ,let my father and my mother tarry with you1 ,i beseech thee1 till ,i know what ,god will do for me4 #bb3d4 ,and he left them under thc eyes of the king of ,moab1 and they abode with him all the days that ,david was in the hold4 ,the hold444 ,the strong hold1 or fortress of ,maspha4 #bb3e4 ,and ,gad the prophet said to ,david3 ,abide not in the hold1 depart1 and go into the land of ,juda4 ,and ,david departed1 and came into the forest of ,haret4 #bb3f4 ,and ,saul heard that ,david was seen1 and the men that were with him4 ,now whilst ,saul abode in ,gabaa1 and was in the wood1 which is by ,rama1 having his spear in his hand1 and all his servants were standing about him1 #bb3g4 ,he said to his servants that stood about him3 ,hear me now1 ye sons of ,jemini3 will the son of ,isai give every one of you fields1 and vineyards1 and make you all tribunes1 and centurions3 #bb3h4 ,that all of you have conspired against me1 and there is no one to inform me1 especially when even my son hath entered into league with the son of ,isai8 ,there is not one of you that pitieth my case1 nor that giveth me any information3 because my son hath raised up my servant against me1 plotting against me to this day4 #bb3i4 ,and ,doeg1 the ,edomite1 who stood by1 and was the chief among the servants of ,saul1 answering1 said3 ,i saw the son of ,isai1 in ,nobe1 with ,achimelech1 the son of ,achitob1 the priest4 #bb3aj4 ,and he consulted the ,lord for him1 and gave him victuals1 and gave him the sword of ,goliath1 the ,philistine4 #bb3aa4 ,then the king sent to call for ,achimelech1 the priest1 the son of ,achitob1 and all his father's house1 the priests that were in ,nobe1 and they came all of them to the king4 #bb3ab4 ,and ,saul said to ,achimelech3 ,hear1 thou son of ,achitob4 ,he answered3 ,here ,i am1 my lord4 #bb3ac4 ,and ,saul said to him3 ,why have you conspired against me1 thou1 and the son of ,isai1 and thou hast given him bread and a sword1 and hast consulted the ,lord for him1 that he should rise up against me1 continuing a traitor to this day4 #bb3ad4 ,and ,achimelech answering the king1 said3 ,and who amongst all thy servants is so faithful as ,david1 who is the king's son in law1 and goeth forth at thy bidding1 and is honourable in thy house8 #bb3ae4 ,did ,i begin to day to consult the ,lord for him8 far be this from me3 let not the king suspect such a thing against his servant1 or any one in all my father's house3 for thy servant knew nothing of this matter1 either little or great4 #bb3af4 ,and the king said3 ,dying thou shalt die1 ,achimelech1 thou and all thy father's house4 #bb3ag4 ,and the king said to the messengers that stood about him3 ,turn1 and kill the priests of the ,lord1 for their hand is with ,david1 because they knew that he was fled1 and they told it not to me4 ,and the king'sservants would not put forth their hands against the priests of the ,lord4 #bb3ah4 ,and the king said to ,doeg3 ,turn thou1 and fall upon the priests4 ,and ,doeg1 the ,edomite1 turned1 and fell upon the priests1 and slew in that day eighty-five men that wore the linen ephod4 #bb3ai4 ,and ,nobe1 the city of the priests1 he smote with the edge of the sword1 both men and women1 children and sucklings1 and ox1 and ass1 and sheep1 with the edge of the sword4 #bb3bj4 ,but one of the sons of ,achimelech1 the son of ,achitob1 whose name was ,abiathar1 escaped1 and fled to ,david1 #bb3ba4 ,and told him that ,saul had slain the priests of the ,lord4 #bb3bb4 ,and ,david said to ,abiathar3 ,i knew that day when ,doeg1 the ,edomite1 was there1 that without doubt he would tell ,saul3 ,i have been the occasion of the death of all the souls of thy father's house4 #bb3bc4 ,abide thou with me1 fear not3 for he that seeketh my life1 seeketh thy life also1 and with me thou shalt be saved4 #a ,kings ,chapter #bc ,david relieveth ,ceila1 besieged by the ,philistines4 ,he fleeth into the desert of ,ziph4 ,jonathan and he confirm their former covenant4 ,the ,ziphites discover him to ,saul1 who pursuing close after him1 is called away by an invasion from the ,philistines4 #bc3a4 ,and they told ,david1 saying3 ,behold the ,philistines fight against ,ceila1 and they rob the barns4 #bc3b4 ,therefore ,david consulted the ,lord1 saying3 ,shall ,i go and smite these ,philistines8 ,and the ,lord said to ,david3 ,go1 and thou shalt smite the ,philistines1 and shalt save ,ceila4 #bc3c4 ,and the men that were with ,david1 said to him3 ,behold we are in fear here in ,judea1 how much more if we go to ,ceila against the bands of the ,philistines8 #bc3d4 ,therefore ,david consulted the ,lord again4 ,and he answered and said to him3 ,arise1 and go to ,ceila3 for ,i will deliver the ,philistines into thy hand4 #bc3e4 ,david1 therefore1 and his men1 went to ,ceila1 and fought against the ,philistines1 and brought away their cattle1 and made a great slaughter of them3 and ,david saved the inhabitants of ,ceila4 #bc3f4 ,now at that time1 when ,abiathar1 the son of ,achimelech1 fled to ,david1 to ,ceila1 he came down1 having an ephod with him4 ,an ephod444 ,or the ephod4 ,that is1 the vestment of the high priest1 with the urim and thummim1 by which the ,lord gave his oracle4 #bc3g4 ,and it was told ,saul that ,david was come to ,ceila3 and ,saul said3 ,the ,lord hath delivered him into my hands1 and he is shut up1 being come into a city that hath gates and bars4 #bc3h4 ,and ,saul commanded all the people to go down to fight against ,ceila1 and to besiege ,david and his men4 #bc3i4 ,now when ,david understood that ,saul secretly prepared evil against him1 he said to ,abiathar1 the priest3 ,bring hither the ephod4 #bc3aj4 ,and ,david said3 ,o ,lord ,god of ,israel1 thy servant hath heard a report1 that ,saul designeth to come to ,ceila1 to destroy the city for my sake3 #bc3aa4 ,will the men of ,ceila deliver me into his hands8 and will ,saul come down1 as thy servant hath heard8 ,o ,lord ,god of ,israel1 tell thy servant4 ,and the ,lord said3 ,he will come down4 #bc3ab4 ,and ,david said3 ,will the men of ,ceila deliver me and my men into the hands of ,saul8 ,and the ,lord said3 ,they will deliver thee up4 #bc3ac4 ,then ,david and his men1 who were about six hundred1 arose1 and departing from ,ceila1 wandered up and down1 uncertain where they should stay3 and it was told ,saul that ,david was fled from ,ceila1 and had escaped3 wherefore he forbore to go out4 #bc3ad4 ,but ,david abode in the desert in strong holds1 and he remained in a mountain of the desert of ,ziph1 in a woody hill4 ,and ,saul sought him always3 but the ,lord delivered him not into his hands4 #bc3ae4 ,and ,david saw that ,saul was come out to seek his life4 ,and ,david was in the desert of ,ziph1 in a wood4 #bc3af4 ,and ,jonathan1 the son of ,saul1 arose1 and went to ,david1 into the wood1 and strengthened his hands in ,god3 and he said to him3 #bc3ag4 ,fear not3 for the hand of my father1 ,saul1 shall not find thee1 and thou shalt reign over ,israel1 and ,i shall be next to thee2 yea and my father knoweth this4 #bc3ah4 ,and they two made a covenant before the ,lord3 and ,david abode in the wood3 but ,jonathan returned to his house4 #bc3ai4 ,and the ,ziphites went up to ,saul1 in ,gabaa1 saying3 ,lo1 doth not ,david lie hid with us in the strong holds of the wood1 in mount ,hachila1 which is on the right hand of the desert4 #bc3bj4 ,now therefore come down1 as thy soul hath desired to come down3 and it shall be our business to deliver him into the king's hands4 #bc3ba4 ,and ,saul said3 ,blessed be ye of the ,lord1 for you have pitied my case4 #bc3bb4 ,go1 therefore1 ,i pray you1 and use all diligence1 and curiously inquire1 and consider the place where his foot is1 and who hath seen him there3 for he thinketh of me1 that ,i lie craftily in wait for him4 #bc3bc4 ,consider1 and see all his lurking holes1 wherein he is hid1 and return to me with the certainty of the thing1 that ,i may go with you4 ,and if he should even go down into the earth to hide himself1 ,i will search him out in all the thousands of ,juda4 #bc3bd4 ,and they arose1 and went to ,ziph before ,saul3 and ,david and his men were in the desert of ,maon1 in the plain at the right hand of ,jesimon4 #bc3be4 ,then ,saul and his men went to seek him3 and it was told ,david1 and forthwith he went down to the rock1 and abode in the wilderness of ,maon3 and when ,saul had heard of it1 he pursued after ,david in the wilderness of ,maon4 #bc3bf4 ,and ,saul went on this side of the mountain3 and ,david and his men were on the other side of the mountain3 and ,david despaired of being able to escape from the face of ,saul3 and ,saul and his men encompassed ,david and his men round about1 to take them4 #bc3bg4 ,and a messenger came to ,saul1 saying3 ,make haste to come1 for the ,philistines have poured in themselves upon the land4 #bc3bh4 ,wherefore ,saul returned1 leaving the pursuit of ,david1 and went to meet the ,philistines4 ,for this cause they called that place the rock of division4 #a ,kings ,chapter #bd ,saul seeketh ,david in the wilderness of ,engaddi3 he goeth into a cave where ,david hath him in his power4 #bd3a4 ,then ,david went up from thence1 and dwelt in strong holds of ,engaddi4 #bd3b4 ,and when ,saul was returned from following the ,philistines1 they told him1 saying3 ,behold1 ,david is in the desert of ,engaddi4 #bd3c4 ,saul1 therefore1 took three thousand chosen men out of all ,israel1 and went out to seek after ,david and his men1 even upon the most craggy rocks1 which are accessible only to wild goats4 #bd3d4 ,and he came to the sheepcotes which were in his way4 ,and there was a cave1 into which ,saul went1 to ease nature3 now ,david and his men lay hid in the inner part of the cave4 #bd3e4 ,and the servants of ,david said to him3 ,behold the day1 of which the ,lord said to thee3 ,i will deliver thy enemy unto thee1 that thou mayst do to him as it shall seem good in thy eyes4 ,then ,david arose1 and secretly cut off the hem of ,saul's robe4 #bd3f4 ,after which ,david's heart struck him1 because he had cut off the hem of ,saul's robe4 ,heart struck him444 ,viz41 with remorse1 as fearing he had done amiss4 #bd3g4 ,and he said to his men3 ,the ,lord be merciful unto me1 that ,i may do no such thing to my master1 the ,lord's anointed1 as to lay my hand upon him1 because he is the ,lord's anointed4 #bd3h4 ,and ,david stopped his men with his words1 and suffered them not to rise against ,saul3 but ,saul1 rising up out of the cave1 went on his way4 #bd3i4 ,and ,david also rose up after him3 and going out of the cave1 cried after ,saul1 saying3 ,my lord the king4 ,and ,saul looked behind him3 and ,david bowing himself down to the ground1 worshipped1 #bd3aj4 ,and said to ,saul3 ,why dost thou hear the words of men that say3 ,david seeketh thy hurt8 #bd3aa ,behold this day thy eyes have seen1 that the ,lord hath delivered thee into my hand1 in the cave1 and ,i had a thought to kill thee1 but my eye hath spared thee4 ,for ,i said3 ,i will not put out my hand against my lord1 because he is the ,lord's anointed4 ,a thought to kill thee444 ,that is1 a suggestion1 to which ,i did not consent4 #bd3ab4 ,moreover1 see and know1 ,o my father1 the hem of thy robe in my hand1 that when ,i cut off the hem of thy robe1 ,i would not put out my hand against thee4 ,reflect1 and see1 that there is no evil in my hand1 nor iniquity1 neither have ,i sinned against thee3 but thou liest in wait for my life1 to take it away4 #bd3ac4 ,the ,lord judge between me and thee and the ,lord revenge me of thee3 but my hand shall not be upon thee4 ,revenge me of thee444 ,or1 as it is in the ,hebrew1 will revenge me4 ,the meaning is1 that he refers his whole cause to ,god1 to judge and punish according to his justice3 yet so as to keep himself in the mean time1 from all personal hatred to ,saul1 or desire of gratifying his own passion1 by seeking revenge4 ,so far from it1 that when ,saul was afterwards slain1 we find1 that instead of rejoicing at his death1 he mourned most bitterly for him4 #bd3ad4 ,as also it is said in the old proverb3 ,from the wicked shall wickedness come forth3 therefore my hand shall not be upon thee4 ,after whom dost thou come out1 ,o king of ,israel8 #bd3ae4 ,after whom dost thou pursue8 ,after a dead dog1 after a flea4 #bd3af4 ,be the ,lord judge1 and judge between me and thee1 and see1 and judge my cause1 and deliver me out of thy hand4 #bd3ag4 ,and when ,david had made an end of speaking these words to ,saul1 ,saul said3 ,is this thy voice1 my son ,david8 ,and ,saul lifted up his voice1 and wept3 #bd3ah4 ,and he said to ,david3 ,thou art more just than ,i3 for thou hast done good to me1 and ,i have rewarded thee with evil4 #bd3ai4 ,and thou hast shewed this day what good things thou hast done to me3 how the ,lord delivered me into thy hand1 and thou hast not killed me4 #bd3bj4 ,for who when he hath found his enemy1 will let him go well away8 ,but the ,lord reward thee for this good turn1 for what thou hast done to me this day4 #bd3ba4 ,and now as ,i know that thou shalt surely be king1 and have the kingdom of ,israel in thy hand3 #bd3bb4 ,swear to me by the ,lord1 that thou wilt not destroy my seed after me1 nor take away my name from the house of my father4 #bd3bc4 ,and ,david swore to ,saul4 ,so ,saul went home3 and ,david and his men went up into safer places4 #a ,kings ,chapter #be ,the death of ,samuel4 ,david1 provoked by ,nabal1 threateneth to destroy him3 but is appeased by ,abigail4 #be3a4 ,and ,samuel died1 and all ,israel was gathered together1 and they mourned for him1 and buried him in his house in ,ramatha4 ,and ,david rose1 and went down into the wilderness of ,pharan4 #be3b4 ,now there was a certain man in the wilderness of ,maon1 and his possessions were in ,carmel1 and the man was very great3 and he had three thousand sheep1 and a thousand goats3 and it happened that he was shearing his sheep in ,carmel4 #be3c4 ,now the name of the man was ,nabal3 and the name of his wife was ,abigail4 ,and she was a prudent and very comely woman3 but her husband was churlish1 and very bad and ill natured3 and he was of the house of ,caleb4 #be3d4 ,and when ,david heard in the wilderness1 that ,nabal was shearing his sheep1 #be3e4 ,he sent ten young men1 and said to them3 ,go up to ,carmel1 and go to ,nabal1 and salute him in my name with peace4 #be3f4 ,and you shall say3 ,peace be to my brethren1 and to thee1 and peace to thy house1 and peace to all that thou hast4 #be3g4 ,i have heard that thy shepherds that were with us in the desert were shearing3 we never molested them1 neither was there ought missing to them of the flock at any time1 all the while they were with us in ,carmel4 #be3h4 ,ask thy servants1 and they will tell thee4 ,now therefore let thy servants find favour in thy eyes3 for we are come in a good day1 whatsoever thy hand shall find give to thy servants1 and to thy son ,david4 #be3i4 ,and when ,david's servants came1 they spoke to ,nabal all these words in ,david's name1 and then held their peace4 #be3aj4 ,but ,nabal answering the servants of ,david1 said3 ,who is ,david8 and what is the son of ,isai8 servants are multiplied now days who flee from their masters4 #be3aa4 ,shall ,i then take my bread1 and my water1 and the flesh of my cattle1 which ,i have killed for my shearers1 and give to men whom ,i know not whence they are8 #be3ab4 ,so the servants of ,david went back their way1 and returning came and told him all the words that he said4 #be3ac4 ,then ,david said to his young men3 ,let every man gird on his sword4 ,and they girded on every man his sword4 ,and ,david also girded on his sword3 and there followed ,david about four hundred men1 and two hundred remained with the baggage4 #be3ad4 ,but one of the servants told1 ,abigail1 the wife of ,nabal1 saying3 ,behold1 ,david sent messengers out of the wilderness1 to salute our master3 and he rejected them4 #be3ae4 ,these men were very good to us1 and gave us no trouble3 ,neither did we ever lose any thing all the time that we conversed with them in the desert4 #be3af4 ,they were a wall unto us1 both by night and day1 all the while we were with them keeping the sheep4 #be3ag4 ,wherefore consider1 and think what thou hast to do3 for evil is determined against thy husband1 and against thy house1 and he is a son of ,belial1 so that no man can speak to him4 #be3ah4 ,then ,abigail made haste and took two hundred loaves1 and two vessels of wine1 and five sheep ready dressed1 and five measures of parched corn1 and a hundred clusters of raisins1 and two hundred cakes of dry figs1 and laid them upon asses3 #be3ai4 ,and she said to her servants3 ,go before me3 behold1 ,i will follow after you3 but she told not her husband1 ,nabal4 #be3bj4 ,and when she had gotten upon an ass1 and was coming down to the foot of the mountain1 ,david and his men came down over against her1 and she met them4 #be3ba4 ,and ,david said3 ,truly in vain have ,i kept all that belonged to this fellow in the wilderness1 and nothing was lost of all that pertained unto him3 and he hath returned me evil for good4 #be3bb4 ,may ,god do so and so1 and add more to the foes of ,david1 if ,i leave of all that belong to him till the morning1 any that pisseth against the wall4 ,if ,i leave1 etc444 ,david certainly sinned in his designs against ,nabal and his family1 as he himself was afterwards sensible1 when he blessed ,god for hindering him from executing the revenge he had proposed4 #be3bc4 ,and when ,abigail saw ,david1 she made haste and lighted off the ass1 and fell before ,david1 on her face1 and adored upon the ground4 #be3bd4 ,and she fell at his feet1 and said3 ,upon me let this iniquity be1 my lord3 let thy handmaid speak1 ,i beseech thee1 in thy ears1 and hear the words of thy servant4 #be3be4 ,let not my lord the king1 ,i pray thee1 regard this naughty man1 ,nabal3 for according to his name1 he is a fool1 and folly is with him3 but ,i1 thy handmaid1 did not see thy servants1 my lord1 whom thou sentest4 ,his name444 ,nabal1 in ,hebrew1 signifies a fool4 #be3bf4 ,now therefore1 my lord1 the ,lord liveth1 and thy soul liveth1 who hath withholden thee from coming to blood1 and hath saved thy hand to thee3 and now let thy enemies be as ,nabal1 and all they that seek evil to my lord4 #be3bg4 ,wherefore receive this blessing1 which thy handmaid hath brought to thee1 my lord3 and give it to the young men that follow thee1 my lord4 #be3bh4 ,forgive the iniquity of thy handmaid3 for the ,lord will surely make for my lord a faithful house1 because thou1 my lord1 fightest the battles of the ,lord3 let not evil therefore be found in thee all the days of thy life4 #be3bi4 ,for if a man at any time shall rise1 and persecute thee1 and seek thy life1 the soul of my lord shall be kept1 as in the bundle of the living1 with the ,lord thy ,god3 but the souls of thy enemies shall be whirled1 as with the violence and whirling of a sling4 #be3cj4 ,and when the ,lord shall have done to thee1 my lord1 all the good that he hath spoken concerning thee1 and shall have made thee prince over ,israel1 #be3ca ,this shall not be an occasion of grief to thee1 and a scruple of heart to my lord1 that thou hast shed innocent blood1 or hast revenged thyself3 and when the ,lord shall have done well by my lord1 thou shalt remember thy handmaid4 #be3cb4 ,and ,david said to ,abigail3 ,blessed be the ,lord the ,god of ,israel1 who sent thee this day to meet me1 and blessed be thy speech3 #be3cc4 ,and blessed be thou1 who hast kept me to day from coming to blood1 and revenging me with my own hand4 #be3cd4 ,otherwise1 as the ,lord liveth1 the ,god of ,israel1 who hath withholden me from doing thee any evil1 if thou hadst not quickly come to meet me1 there had not been left to ,nabal by the morning light1 any that pisseth against the wall4 #be3ce4 ,and ,david received at her hand all that she had brought him1 and said to her3 ,go in peace into thy house1 behold ,i have heard thy voice1 and honoured thy face4 #be3cf4 ,and ,abigail came to ,nabal3 and behold he had a feast in his house1 like the feast of a king3 and ,nabal's heart was merry1 for he was very drunk3 and she told him nothing less or more until morning4 #be3cg4 ,but early in the morning1 when ,nabal had digested his wine1 his wife told him these words1 and his heart died within him1 and he became as a stone4 #be3ch4 ,and after ten days had passed1 the ,lord struck ,nabal1 and he died4 #be3ci4 ,and when ,david had heard that ,nabal was dead1 he said3 ,blessed be the ,lord1 who hath judged the cause of my reproach1 at the hand of ,nabal1 and hath kept his servant from evil1 and the ,lord hath returned the wickedness of ,nabal upon his head4 ,then ,david sent and treated with ,abigail1 that he might take her to himself for a wife4 ,blessed be1 etc444 ,david praiseth ,god1 on this occasion1 not out of joy for the death of ,nabal 7which would have argued a rancour of heart71 but because he saw that ,god had so visibly taken his cause in hand1 in punishing the injury done to him2 whilst1 by a merciful providence he kept him from revenging himself4 #be3dj4 ,and ,david's servants came to ,abigail1 to ,carmel1 and spoke to her1 saying3 ,david hath sent us to thee1 to take thee to himself for a wife4 #be3da4 ,and she arose1 and bowed herself down with her face to the earth1 and said3 ,behold1 let thy servant be a handmaid1 to wash the feet of the servants of my lord4 #be3db4 ,and ,abigail arose1 and made haste1 and got upon an ass1 and five damsels went with her1 her waiting maids1 and she followed the messengers of ,david1 and became his wife4 #be3dc4 ,moreover ,david took also ,achinoam of ,jezrahel3 and they were both of them his wives4 #be3dd4 ,but ,saul gave ,michol1 his daughter1 ,david's wife1 to ,phalti1 the son of ,lais1 who was of ,gallim4 #a ,kings ,chapter #bf ,saul goeth out again after ,david1 who cometh by night where ,saul and his men are asleep1 but suffereth him not to be touched4 ,saul again confesseth his fault1 and promiseth peace4 #bf3a4 ,and the men of ,ziph came to ,saul in ,gabaa1 saying3 ,behold ,david is hid in the hill of ,hachila1 which is over against the wilderness4 #bf3b4 ,and ,saul arose1 and went down to the wilderness of ,ziph having with him three thousand chosen men of ,israel1 to seek ,david in the wilderness of ,ziph4 #bf3c4 ,and ,saul encamped in ,gabaa ,hachila1 which was over against the wilderness in the way3 and ,david abode in the wilderness4 ,and seeing that ,saul was come after him into the wilderness1 #bf3d4 ,he sent spies1 and learned that he was most certainly come thither4 #bf3e4 ,and ,david arose secretly1 and came to the place where ,saul was3 and when he had beheld the place1 wherein ,saul slept1 and ,abner1 the son of ,ner1 the captain of his army1 and ,saul sleeping in a tent1 and the rest of the multitude round about him1 #bf3f4 ,david spoke to ,achimelech1 the ,hethite1 and ,abisai1 the son of ,sarvia1 the brother of ,joab1 saying3 ,who will go down with me to ,saul into the camp8 ,and ,abisai said3 ,i will go with thee4 #bf3g4 ,so ,david and ,abisai came to the people by night1 and found ,saul lying and sleeping in the tent1 and his spear fixed in the ground at his head3 and ,abner and the people sleeping round about him4 #bf3h4 ,and ,abisai said to ,david3 ,god hath shut up thy enemy this day into thy hands3 now then ,i will run him through with my spear1 even to the earth at once1 and there shall be no need of a second time4 #bf3i4 ,and ,david said to ,abisai3 ,kill him not3 for who shall put forth his hand against the ,lord's anointed1 and shall be guiltless8 #bf3aj4 ,and ,david said3 ,as the ,lord liveth1 unless the ,lord shall strike him1 or his day shall come to die1 or he shall go down to battle1 and perish3 #bf3aa4 ,the ,lord be merciful unto me1 and keep me that ,i never put forth my hand against the ,lord's anointed4 ,but now take the spear which is at his head1 and the cup of water1 and let us go4 #bf3ab4 ,so ,david took the spear1 and the cup of water which was at ,saul's head1 and they went away3 and no man saw it1 or knew it1 or awaked1 but they were all asleep1 for a deep sleep from the ,lord was fallen upon them4 #bf3ac4 ,and when ,david was gone over to the other side1 and stood on the top of the hill afar off1 and a good space was between them1 #bf3ad4 ,david cried to the people1 and to ,abner1 the son of ,ner1 saying3 ,wilt thou not answer1 ,abner8 ,and ,abner answering1 said3 ,who art thou1 that criest1 and disturbest the king8 #bf3ae4 ,and ,david said to ,abner3 ,art not thou a man8 and who is like unto thee in ,israel8 why then hast thou not kept thy lord the king8 for there came one of the people in to kill the king thy lord4 #bf3af4 ,this thing is not good1 that thou hast done3 as the ,lord liveth1 you are the sons of death1 who have not kept your master1 the ,lord's anointed4 ,and now where is the king's spear1 and the cup of water1 which was at his head8 #bf3ag4 ,and ,saul knew ,david's voice1 and said3 ,is this thy voice1 my son ,david8 ,and ,david said3 ,it is my voice1 my lord the king4 #bf3ah4 ,and he said3 ,wherefore doth my lord persecute his servant8 ,what have ,i done8 or what evil is there in my hand8 #bf3ai4 ,now therefore hear1 ,i pray thee1 my lord the king1 the words of thy servant3 ,if the ,lord stir thee up against me1 let him accept of sacrifice3 but if the sons of men1 they are cursed in the sight of the ,lord1 who have cast me out this day1 that ,i should not dwell in the inheritance of the ,lord1 saying3 ,go1 serve strange gods4 #bf3bj4 ,and now let not my blood be shed upon the earth before the ,lord3 for the king of ,israel is come out to seek a flea1 as the partridge is hunted in the mountains4 #bf3ba4 ,and ,saul said3 ,i have sinned2 return1 my son ,david1 for ,i will no more do thee harm1 because my life hath been precious in thy eyes this day3 for it appeareth that ,i have done foolishly1 and have been ignorant in very many things4 #bf3bb4 ,and ,david answering1 said3 ,behold the king's spear3 let one of the king's servants come over and fetch it4 #bf3bc4 ,and the ,lord will reward every one according to his justice1 and his faithfulness3 for the ,lord hath delivered thee this day into my hand1 and ,i would not put forth my hand against the ,lord's anointed4 #bf3bd4 ,and as thy life hath been much set by this day in my eyes1 so let my life be much set by in the eyes of the ,lord1 and let him deliver me from all distress4 #bf3be4 ,then ,saul said to ,david3 ,blessed art thou1 my son ,david3 and truly doing thou shalt do1 and prevailing thou shalt prevail4 ,and ,david went on his way1 and ,saul returned to his place4 #a ,kings ,chapter #bg ,david goeth again to ,achis king of ,geth1 and obtaineth of him the city of ,siceleg4 #bg3a4 ,and ,david said in his heart3 ,i shall one day or other fall into the hands of ,saul3 is it not better for me to flee1 and to be saved in the land of the ,philistines1 that ,saul may despair of me1 and cease to seek me in all the coasts of ,israel8 ,i will flee then out of his hands4 #bg3b4 ,and ,david arose1 and went away1 both he and the six hundred men that were with him1 to ,achis1 the son of ,maoch1 king of ,geth4 #bg3c4 ,and ,david dwelt with ,achis at ,geth1 he and his men2 every man with his household1 and ,david with his two wives1 ,achinoam1 the ,jezrahelitess1 and ,abigail1 the wife of ,nabal of ,carmel4 #bg3d4 ,and it was told ,saul that ,david was fled to ,geth1 and he sought no more after him4 #bg3e4 ,and ,david said to ,achis3 ,if ,i have found favour in thy sight1 let a place be given me in one of the cities of this country1 that ,i may dwell there3 for why should thy servant dwell in the royal city with thee8 #bg3f4 ,then ,achis gave him ,siceleg that day3 for which reason ,siceleg belongeth to the kings of ,juda unto this day4 #bg3g4 ,and the time that ,david dwelt in the country of the ,philistines1 was four months4 #bg3h4 ,and ,david and his men went up1 and pillaged ,gessuri1 and ,gerzi1 and the ,amalecites3 for these were of old the inhabitants of the countries1 as men go to ,sur1 even to the land of ,egypt4 ,pillaged ,gessuri1 etc444 ,these probably were enemies of the people of ,god3 and some1 if not all of them1 were of the number of those whom ,god had ordered to be destroyed3 which justifies ,david's proceedings in their regard4 ,though it is to be observed here1 that we are not under an obligation of justifying every thing that he did3 for the scripture1 in relating what was done1 does not say that it was well done4 ,and even such as are true servants of ,god1 are not to be imitated in all they do4 #bg3i4 ,and ,david wasted all the land1 and left neither man nor woman alive3 and took away the sheep1 and the oxen1 and the asses1 and the camels1 and the apparel1 and returned and came to ,achis4 #bg3aj4 ,and ,achis said to him3 ,whom hast thou gone against to day8 ,david answered3 ,against the south of ,juda1 and against the south of ,jerameel1 and against the south of ,ceni4 #bg3aa4 ,and ,david saved neither man nor woman1 neither brought he any of them to ,geth1 saying3 ,lest they should speak against us4 ,so did ,david1 and such was his proceeding all the days that he dwelt in the country of the ,philistines4 #bg3ab4 ,and ,achis believed ,david1 saying3 ,he hath done much harm to his people ,israel3 ,therefore he shall be my servant for ever4 #a ,kings ,chapter #bh ,the ,philistines go out to war against ,israel4 ,saul being forsaken by ,god1 hath recourse to a witch4 ,samuel appeareth to him4 #bh3a4 ,and it came to pass in those days1 that the ,philistines gathered together their armies1 to be prepared for war against ,israel3 ,and ,achis said to ,david3 ,know thou now assuredly1 that thou shalt go out with me to the war1 thou1 and thy men4 #bh3b4 ,and ,david said to ,achis3 ,now thou shalt know what thy servant will do4 ,and ,achis said to ,david3 ,and ,i will appoint thee to guard my life for ever4 #bh3c4 ,now ,samuel was dead1 and all ,israel mourned for him1 and buried him in ,ramatha1 his city4 ,and ,saul had put away all the magicians and soothsayers out of the land4 #bh3d4 ,and the ,philistines were gathered together1 and came and encamped in ,sunam3 and ,saul also gathered together all ,israel1 and came to ,gelboe4 #bh3e4 ,and ,saul saw the army of the ,philistines1 and was afraid1 and his heart was very much dismayed4 #bh3f4 ,and he consulted the ,lord1 and he answered him not1 neither by dreams1 nor by priests1 nor by prophets4 #bh3g4 ,and ,saul said to his servants3 ,seek me a woman that hath a divining spirit1 and ,i will go to her1 and enquire by her4 ,and his servants said to him3 ,there is a woman that hath a divining spirit at ,endor4 #bh3h4 ,then he disguised himself3 and put on other clothes1 and he went1 and two men with him1 and they came to the woman by night1 and he said to her3 ,divine to me by thy divining spirit1 and bring me up him whom ,i shall tell thee4 #bh3i4 ,and the woman said to him3 ,behold thou knowest all that ,saul hath done1 and how he hath rooted out the magicians and soothsayers from the land3 why then dost thou lay a snare for my life1 to cause me to be put to death8 #bh3aj4 ,and ,saul swore unto her by the ,lord1 saying3 ,as the ,lord liveth1 there shall no evil happen to thee for this thing4 #bh3aa4 ,and the woman said to him3 ,whom shall ,i bring up to thee8 ,and he said1 ,bring me up ,samuel4 #bh3ab ,and when the woman saw ,samuel1 she cried out with a loud voice1 and said to ,saul3 ,why hast thou deceived me8 for thou art ,saul4 #bh3ac4 ,and the king said to her3 ,fear not3 what hast thou seen8 and the woman said to ,saul3 ,i saw gods ascending out of the earth4 #bh3ad4 ,and he said to her3 ,what form is he of8 ,and she said3 ,an old man cometh up1 and he is covered with a mantle4 ,and ,saul understood that it was ,samuel1 and he bowed himself with his face to the ground1 and adored4 ,understood that it was ,samuel444 ,it is the more common opinion of the holy fathers1 and interpreters1 that the soul of ,samuel appeared indeed3 and not1 as some have imagined1 an evil spirit in his shape4 ,not that the power of her magic could bring him thither1 but that ,god was pleased for the punishment of ,saul1 that ,samuel himself should denounce unto him the evils that were falling upon him4 ,see ,eccli4 #df4bc4 #bh3ae4 ,and ,samuel said to ,saul3 ,why hast thou disturbed my rest1 that ,i should be brought up8 ,and ,saul said3 ,i am in great distress3 for the ,philistines fight against me1 and ,god is departed from me1 and would not hear me1 neither by the hand of prophets1 nor by dreams3 therefore ,i have called thee1 that thou mayst shew me what ,i shall do4 #bh3af4 ,and ,samuel said3 ,why askest thou me1 seeing the ,lord has departed from thee1 and is gone over to thy rival8 #bh3ag4 ,for the ,lord will do to thee as he spoke by me1 and he will rend thy kingdom out of thy hand1 and will give it to thy neighbour ,david3 #bh3ah4 ,because thou didst not obey the voice of the ,lord1 neither didst thou execute the wrath of his indignation upon ,amalec4 ,therefore hath the ,lord done to thee what thou sufferest this day4 #bh3ai4 ,and the ,lord also will deliver ,israel with thee into the hands of the ,philistines3 and to morrow thou and thy sons shall be with me3 and the ,lord will also deliver the army of ,israel into the hands of the ,philistines4 ,with me444 ,that is1 in the state of the dead1 and in another world1 though not in the same place4 #bh3bj4 ,and forthwith ,saul fell all along on the ground2 for he was frightened with the words of ,samuel1 and there was no strength in him1 for he had eaten no bread all that day4 #bh3ba4 ,and the woman came to ,saul1 7for he was very much troubled7 and said to him3 ,behold thy handmaid hath obeyed thy voice1 and ,i have put my life in my hand3 and ,i hearkened unto the words which thou spokest to me4 #bh3bb4 ,now therefore1 ,i pray thee1 hearken thou also to the voice of thy handmaid1 and let me set before thee a morsel of bread1 that thou mayst eat and recover strength1 and be able to go on thy journey4 #bh3bc4 ,but he refused1 and said3 ,i will not eat4 ,but his servants and the woman forced him1 and at length hearkening to their voice1 he arose from the ground1 and sat upon the bed4 #bh3bd4 ,now the woman had a fatted calf in the house1 and she made haste and killed it3 and taking meal1 kneaded it1 and baked some unleavened bread1 #bh3be4 ,and set it before ,saul1 and before his servants4 ,and when they had eaten they rose up1 and walked all that night4 #a ,kings ,chapter #bi ,david going with the ,philistines is sent back by their princes4 #bi3a4 ,now all the troops of the ,philistines were gathered together to ,aphec3 and ,israel also encamped by the fountain1 which is in ,jezrahel4 #bi3b4 ,and the lords of the ,philistines marched with their hundreds and their thousands3 but ,david and his men were in the rear with ,achis4 #bi3c4 ,and the princes of the ,philistines said to ,achis3 ,what mean these ,hebrews8 ,and ,achis said to the princes of the ,philistines3 ,do you not know ,david who was the servant of ,saul1 the king of ,israel1 and hath been with me many days1 or years1 and ,i have found no fault in him1 since the day that he fled over to me until this day8 #bi3d4 ,but the prices of the ,philistines were angry with him1 and they said to him3 ,let this man return1 and abide in his place1 which thou hast appointed him1 and let him not go down with us to battle1 lest he be an adversary to us1 when we shall begin to fight3 for how can he otherwise appease his master1 but with our heads8 #bi3e4 ,is not this ,david1 to whom they sung in their dances1 saying3 ,saul slew his thousands1 and ,david his ten thousands8 #bi3f4 ,then ,achis called ,david1 and said to him3 ,as the ,lord liveth1 thou art upright and good in my sight3 and so is thy going out1 and thy coming in with me in the army3 and ,i have not found any evil in thee1 since the day that thou camest to me unto this day3 but thou pleasest not the lords4 #bi3g4 ,return therefore1 and go in peace1 and offend not the eyes of the princes of the ,philistines4 #bi3h4 ,and ,david said to ,achis3 ,but what have ,i done1 or what hast thou found in me thy servant1 from the day that ,i have been in thy sight until this day1 that ,i may not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king8 #bi3i4 ,and ,achis answering1 said to ,david3 ,i know that thou art good in my sight1 as an angel of ,god3 ,but the princes of the ,philistines have said3 ,he shall not go up with us to the battle4 #bi3aj4 ,therefore arise in the morning1 thou1 and the servants of thy lord1 who came with thee3 and when you are up before day1 and it shall begin to be light1 go on your way4 #bi3aa4 ,so ,david and his men arose in the night1 that they might set forward in the morning1 and returned to the land of the ,philistines3 and the ,philistines went up to ,jezrahel4 #a ,kings ,chapter #cj ,the ,amalecites burn ,siceleg1 and carry off the prey3 ,david pursueth after them1 and recovereth all out of their hands4 #cj3a4 ,now when ,david and his men were come to ,siceleg on the third day1 the ,amalecites had made an invasion on the south side upon ,siceleg1 and had smitten ,siceleg1 and burnt it with fire1 #cj3b4 ,and had taken the women captives that were in it1 both little and great3 and they had not killed any person1 but had carried them with them1 and went on their way4 #cj3c4 ,so when ,david and his men came to the city1 and found it burnt with fire1 and that their wives1 and their sons1 and their daughters1 were taken captives1 #cj3d4 ,david and the people that were with him1 lifted up their voices1 and wept till they had no more tears4 #cj3e4 ,for the two wives also of ,david were taken captives1 ,achinoam1 the ,jezrahelitess1 and ,abigail1 the wife of ,nabal of ,carmel4 #cj3f4 ,and ,david was greatly afflicted3 for the people had a mind to stone him1 for the soul of every man was bitterly grieved for his sons and daughters3 but ,david took courage in the ,lord his ,god4 #cj3g4 ,and he said to ,abiathar1 the priest1 the son of ,achimelech3 ,bring me hither the ephod4 ,and ,abiathar brought the ephod to ,david4 #cj3h4 ,and ,david consulted the ,lord1 saying3 ,shall ,i pursue after these robbers1 and shall ,i overtake them1 or not8 ,and the ,lord said to him3 ,pursue after them3 for thou shalt surely overtake them and recover the prey4 #cj3i4 ,so ,david went1 he and the six hundred men that were with him1 and they came to the torrent ,besor3 and some1 being weary1 stayed there4 #cj3aj4 ,but ,david pursued1 he and four hundred men3 for two hundred stayed1 who1 being weary1 could not go over the torrent ,besor4 #cj3aa4 ,and they found an ,egyptian in the field1 and brought him to ,david3 and they gave him bread to eat1 and water to drink1 #cj3ab4 ,as also a piece of a cake of figs1 and two bunches of raisins4 ,and when he had eaten them1 his spirit returned1 and he was refreshed3 for he had not eaten bread1 nor drunk water1 three days and three nights4 #cj3ac4 ,and ,david said to him3 ,to whom dost thou belong2 or whence dost thou come8 and whither art thou going8 ,he said3 ,i am a young man of ,egypt1 the servant of an ,amalecite3 and my master left me1 because ,i began to be sick three days ago4 #cj3ad4 ,for we made an invasion on the south side of ,cerethi1 and upon ,juda1 and upon the south of ,caleb1 and we burnt ,siceleg with fire4 #cj3ae4 ,and ,david said to him3 ,canst thou bring me to this company8 and he said3 ,swear to me by ,god1 that thou wilt not kill me1 nor deliver me into the hands of my master1 and ,i will bring thee to this company4 ,and ,david swore to him4 #cj3af4 ,and when he had brought him1 behold they were lying spread abroad upon all the ground1 eating and drinking1 and as it were keeping a festival day1 for all the prey and the spoils which they had taken out of the land of the ,philistines1 and out of the land of ,juda4 #cj3ag4 ,and ,david slew them from the evening unto the evening of the next day1 and there escaped not a man of them1 but four hundred young men1 who had gotten upon camels1 and fled4 #cj3ah4 ,so ,david recovered all that the ,amalecites had taken1 and he rescued his two wives4 #cj3ai4 ,and there was nothing missing small or great1 neither of their sons or their daughters1 nor of the spoils1 and whatsoever they had taken1 ,david recovered all4 #cj3bj4 ,and he took all the flocks and the herds1 and made them go before him3 and they said3 ,this is the prey of ,david4 #cj3ba4 ,and ,david came to the two hundred men1 who1 being weary1 had stayed1 and were not able to follow ,david1 and he had ordered them to abide at the torrent ,besor3 and they came out to meet ,david1 and the people that were with him4 ,and ,david coming to the people1 saluted them peaceably4 #cj3bb4 ,then all the wicked and unjust men1 that had gone with ,david1 answering1 said3 ,because they came not with us1 we will not give them any thing of the prey which we have recovered3 but let every man take his wife1 and his children1 and be contented with them1 and go his way4 #cj3bc4 ,but ,david said3 ,you shall not do so1 my brethren1 with these things1 which the ,lord hath given us1 who hath kept us1 and hath delivered the robbers that invaded us into our hands3 #cj3bd4 ,and no man shall hearken to you in this matter4 ,but equal shall be the portion of him that went down to battle1 and of him that abode at the baggage1 and they shall divide alike4 #cj3be4 ,and this hath been done from that day forward1 and since was made a statute and an ordinance1 and as a law in ,israel4 #cj3bf4 ,then ,david came to ,siceleg1 and sent presents of the prey to the ancients of ,juda1 his neighbours1 saying3 ,receive a blessing of the prey of the enemies of the ,lord4 #cj3bg4 ,to them that were in ,bethel1 and that were in ,ramoth to the south1 and to them that were in ,jether4 #cj3bh4 ,and to them that were in ,aroer1 and that were in ,sephamoth1 and that were in ,esthamo1 #cj3bi4 ,and that were in ,rachal1 and that were in the cities of ,jerameel1 and that were in the cities of ,ceni1 #cj3cj4 ,and that were in ,arama1 and that were in the lake ,asan1 and that were in ,athach1 #cj3ca4 ,and that were in ,hebron1 and to the rest that were in those places1 in which ,david had abode with his men4 #a ,kings ,chapter #ca ,israel is defeated by the ,philistines3 ,saul and his sons are slain4 #ca3a4 ,and the ,philistines fought against ,israel1 and the men of ,israel fled from before the ,philistines1 and fell down slain in mount ,gelboe4 #ca3b4 ,and the ,philistines fell upon ,saul1 and upon his sons1 and they slew ,jonathan1 and ,abinadab1 and ,melchisua1 the sons of ,saul4 #ca3c4 ,and the whole weight of the battle was turned upon ,saul3 and the archers overtook him1 and he was grievously wounded by the archers4 #ca3d4 ,then ,saul said to his armourbearer3 ,draw thy sword1 and kill me3 lest these uncircumcised come1 and slay me1 and mock at me4 ,and his armourbearer would not3 for he was struck with exceeding great fear4 ,then ,saul took his sword1 and fell upon it4 #ca3e4 ,and when his armourbearer saw this1 to wit1 that ,saul was dead1 he also fell upon his sword and died with him4 #ca3f4 ,so ,saul died1 and his three sons1 and his armourbearer1 and all his men that same day together4 #ca3g4 ,and the men of ,israel1 that were beyond the valley1 and beyond the ,jordan1 seeing that the ,israelites were fled1 and that ,saul was dead1 and his sons1 forsook their cities1 and fled3 and the ,philistines came and dwelt there4 #ca3h4 ,and on the morrow the ,philistines came to strip the slain1 and they found ,saul and his three sons lying in mount ,gelboe4 #ca3i4 ,and they cut off ,saul's head1 and stripped him of his armour1 and sent into the land of the ,philistines round about1 to publish it in the temples of their idols and among their people4 #ca3aj4 ,and they put his armour in the temple of ,astaroth1 but his body they hung on the wall of ,bethsan4 #ca3aa4 ,now when the inhabitants of ,jabes ,galaad had heard all that the ,philistines had done to ,saul1 #ca3ab4 ,all the most valiant men arose1 and walked all the night1 and took the body of ,saul1 and the bodies of his sons1 from the wall of ,bethsan3 and they came to ,jabes ,galaad1 and burnt them there4 #ca3ac4 ,and they took their bones1 and buried them in the wood of ,jabes3 and fasted seven days4
