with the anathema4 ,i will be no more with you1 till you destroy him that is guilty of this wickedness4 #g3ac4 ,arise1 sanctify the people1 and say to them3 ,be ye sanctified against tomorrow3 for thus saith the ,lord ,god of ,israel3 ,the curse is in the midst of thee1 ,o ,israel3 thou canst not stand before thy enemies1 till he be destroyed out of thee1 that is defiled with this wickedness4 with the ancients in the front of the army1 environed with the aid of the fighting men4 #h3aa4 ,and when they were come1 and were gone up over against the city1 they stood on the north side of the city1 between which and them there was a valley in the midst4 #h3ab4 ,and he had chosen five thousand men1 and set them to lie in ambush between ,bethel and ,hai1 on the west side of the same city3 ,five thousand444 ,these were part of the thirty thousand mentioned above1 ver4 #c4 #h3ac4 ,but all the rest of the army went in battle array on the north side1 so that the last of that multitude reached to the west side of the city4 ,so ,josue went that night1 and stood in the midst of the valley4 #h3ad4 ,and when the king of ,hai saw this1 he made haste in the morning1 and went out with all the army of the city1 and set it in battle array1 toward the desert1 not knowing that there lay an ambush behind his back4 #h3ae4 ,but ,josue1 and all ,israel gave back1 making as if they were afraid1 and fleeing by the way of the wilderness4 #h3af4 ,but they shouting together1 and encouraging one another1 pursued them4 ,and when they were come from the city1 #h3ag4 ,and not one remained in the city of ,hai and of ,bethel1 that did not pursue after ,israel1 leaving the towns open as they had rushed out1 #h3ah4 ,the ,lord said to ,josue3 ,lift up the shield that is in thy hand1 towards the city of ,hai1 for ,i will deliver it to thee4 #h3ai4 ,and when he had lifted up his shield towards the city1 the ambush1 that lay hid1 rose up immediately3 and going to the city1 took it1 and set it on fire4 #h3bj4 ,and the men of the city1 that pursued after ,josue1 looking back1 and seeing the smoke of the city rise up to heaven1 had no more power to flee this way or that way3 especially as they that had counterfeited flight1 and were going toward the wilderness1 turned back most valiantly against them that pursued4 #h3ba4 ,so ,josue1 and all ,israel1 seeing that the city was taken1 and that the smoke of the city rose up1 returned1 and slew the men of ,hai4 #h3bb4 ,and they also that had taken and set the city on fire1 issuing out of the city to meet their own men1 began to cut off the enemies who were surrounded by them4 ,so that the enemies being cut off on both sides1 not one of so great a multitude was saved4 #h3bc4 ,and they took the king of the city of ,hai alive and brought him to ,josue4 #h3bd4 ,so all being slain that had pursued after ,israel1 in his flight to the wilderness1 and falling by the sword in the same place1 the children of ,israel returned and laid waste the city4 #h3be4 ,and the number of them that fell that day1 both of men and women1 was twelve thousand persons1 all of the city of ,hai4 #h3bf4 ,but ,josue drew not back his hand1 which he had stretched out on high1 holding the shield1 till all the inhabitants of ,hai were slain4 #h3bg4 ,and the children of ,israel divided among them1 the cattle and the prey of the city1 as the ,lord had commanded ,josue4 #h3bh4 ,and he burnt the city1 and made it a heap forever3 #h3bi4 ,and he hung the king thereof on a gibbet1 until the evening and the going down of the sun4 ,then ,josue commanded1 ,josue1 who then abode in the camp at ,galgal1 and said to him1 and to all ,israel with him3 ,we are come from a far country1 desiring to make peace with you4 ,and the children of ,israel answered them1 and said3 #i3g4 ,perhaps you dwell in the land which falls to our lot2 if so1 we can make no league with you4 #i3h4 ,but they said to ,josue3 ,we are thy servants4 ,josue said to them3 ,who are you8 and whence came you8 #i3i4 ,they answered3 ,from a very far country thy servants are come in the name of the ,lord thy ,god4 ,for we have heard the fame of his power1 all the things that he did the third day1 the names of which are1 ,gabaon1 and ,caphira1 and ,beroth1 and ,cariathiarim4 #i3ah4 ,and they slew them not1 because the princes of the multitude had sworn in the name of the ,lord1 the ,god of ,israel4 ,then all the common people murmured against the princes4 #i3ai4 ,and they answered them3 ,we have sworn to them in the name of the ,lord1 the ,god of ,israel1 and therefore we may not touch them4 #i3bj4 ,but this we will do to them3 ,let their lives be saved1 lest the wrath of the ,lord be stirred up against us1 if we should be forsworn3 #i3ba4 ,but so let them live1 as to serve the whole multitude in hewing wood1 and bringing in water4 ,as they were speaking these things1 #i2bb4 ,josue called the ,gabaonites1 and said to them3 ,why would you impose upon us1 saying3 ,we they and their armies1 and camped about ,gabaon1 laying siege to it4 #aj3f4 ,but the inhabitants of the city of ,gabaon1 which was besieged1 sent to ,josue1 who then abode in the camp at ,galgal1 and said to him3 ,withdraw not thy hands from helping thy servants3 come up quickly1 and save us1 and bring us succour3 for all the kings of the ,amorrhites1 who dwell in the mountains1 are gathered together against us4 #aj3g4 ,and ,josue went up from ,galgal1 and all the army of the warriors with him1 most valiant men4 #aj3h4 ,but the ,lord said to ,josue3 ,fear them not3 for ,i have delivered them into thy hands3 none of them shall be able to stand against thee4 #aj3i4 ,so ,josue going up from ,galgal all the night1 came upon them suddenly4 #aj3aj4 ,and the ,lord troubled them1 at the sight of ,israel3 and he slew them with a great slaughter1 in ,gabaon1 and pursued them by the way of the ascent to ,bethoron1 and cut them off all the way to ,azeca and ,maceda4 #aj3aa4 ,and when they were fleeing from the children of ,israel1 and were in the descent of ,bethoron1 the ,lord cast down upon them great stones from heaven1 as far as ,azeca3 and many more were killed with the hailstones1 than were slain by the swords of the children of ,israel1 #aj3ab4 ,then ,josue spoke to the ,lord1 in the day that he delivered the ,amorrhite in the sight of the children of ,israel1 and he said before them3 ,move not1 ,o sun1 toward ,gabaon1 nor thou1 ,o moon1 toward the valley of ,ajalon4 #aj3ac4 ,and the sun and the moon stood still1 till the people revenged themselves of their enemies4 ,is not this written in the book of the just8 ,so the sun stood still in the midst of heaven1 and hasted not to go down the space of one day4 ,the book of the just444 ,in ,hebrew ,jasher3 an ancient book long since lost4 #aj3ad4 ,there was not before1 nor after1 so long a day1 the ,lord obeying the voice of a man1 and fighting for ,israel4 #aj3ae4 ,and ,josue returned1 with all ,israel1 into the camp of ,galgal4 #aj3af4 ,for the five kings were fled1 and had hid themselves in a cave of the city of ,maceda4 #aj3ag4 ,and it was told ,josue1 that the five kings were found hid in a cave of the city of ,maceda4 #aj3ah4 ,and he commanded them that were with him1 saying3 ,roll great stones to the mouth of the cave1 and set careful men to keep them shut up3 #aj3ai4 ,and stay you not1 but pursue after the enemies1 and kill all the hindermost of them as they flee1 and do not suffer them whom the ,lord ,god hath delivered into your hands1 to shelter themselves in their cities4 #aj3bj4 ,so the enemies being slain with a great slaughter1 and almost utterly consumed1 they that were able to escape from ,israel1 entered into fenced cities4 #aj3ba4 ,and all the army returned to ,josue1 in ,maceda1 where the camp then was1 in good health1 and without the loss of any one3 and no man durst move his tongue against the children of ,israel4 #aj3bb4 ,and ,josue gave orders1 saying3 ,open the mouth of the cave1 and bring forth to me the five kings that lie hid therein4 #aj3bc4 ,and the ministers did as they were commanded3 and they brought out to him the five kings out of the cave3 the king of ,jerusalem1 the king of ,hebron1 the king of ,jerimoth1 the king of ,lachis1 the king of ,eglon4 #aj3bd4 ,and when they were brought out to him1 he called all the men of ,israel1 and said to the chiefs of the army that were with him3 ,go1 and set your feet on the necks of these kings4 ,and when they had gone1 and put their feet upon the necks of them lying under them1 #aj3be4 ,he said again to them3 ,fear not1 neither be ye dismayed1 take courage1 and be strong3 for so will the ,lord do to all your enemies1 against whom you fight4 #aj3bf4 ,and ,josue struck1 and slew them1 and sword1 and all the inhabitants thereof4 ,they left not in it any remains4 ,and they did to the king of ,lebna1 as they had done to the king of ,jericho4 #aj3ca4 ,from ,lebna he passed unto ,lachis1 with all ,israel3 and investing it with his army1 besieged it4 #aj3cb4 ,and the ,lord delivered ,lachis into the hands of ,israel1 and he took it the following day1 and put it to the sword1 and every soul that was in it1 as he had done to ,lebna4 #aj3cc4 ,at that time ,horam1 king of ,gazer1 came up to succour ,lachis3 and ,josue slew him with all his people so as to leave none alive4 #aj3cd4 ,and with their troops1 a people exceeding numerous as the sand that is on the sea shore1 their horses also and chariots a very great multitude1 #aa3e4 ,and all these kings assembled together at the waters of ,merom1 to fight against ,israel4 #aa3f4 ,and the ,lord said to ,josue3 ,fear them not3 for to morrow at this same hour ,i will deliver all these to be slain in the sight of ,israel3 thou shalt hamstring their horses1 and thou shalt burn their chariots with fire4 ,hamstring their horses1 and burn their chariots with fire1 etc444 ,god so ordained1 that his people might not trust in chariots with the sword4 ,now ,asor of old was the head of all these kingdoms4 #aa3aa4 ,and he cut off all the souls that abode there3 he left not in it any remains1 but utterly destroyed all1 and burned the same city as ,bosor1 which is to be observed in some other places1 where the number of names exceeds the number of cities4 #ba3cg4 ,of the tribe of ,gad1 ,ramoth in ,galaad1 one of the cities of refuge1 and ,manaim and ,hesebon and ,jaser1 four cities with their suburbs1 #ba3ch4 ,all the cities of the children of ,merari by their families and kindreds1 were twelve4 #ba3ci4 ,so all the cities of the ,levites within the possession of the children of ,israel were forty-eight1 #ba3dj4 ,with their suburbs1 each distributed by the families4 #ba3da4 ,and the ,lord ,god gave to ,israel all the land that he had sworn to give to their fathers3 and they possessed it1 and dwelt in it4 #ba3db4 ,and he gave them peace from all nations round about3 and none of their enemies durst stand against them1 but were brought under their dominion4 #ba3dc4 ,not so much as one word1 which he had promised to perform unto them1 was made void1 but all came to pass4 ,josue ,chapter #bb ,the tribes of when the children of ,israel had heard of it1 and certain messengers brought them an account that the children of ,ruben1 and of ,gad1 and the half tribe of ,manasses had built an altar in the land of ,chanaan1 upon the banks of the ,jordan1 over against the children of ,israel3 #bb3ab4 ,they all assembled in ,silo1 to go up and fight against them4 #bb3ac4 ,and in the mean time they sent to them ,god1 the ,lord the most mighty ,god1 he knoweth1 and ,israel also shall understand3 ,if with the design of transgression we have set up this altar1 let him not save us1 but punish us immediately3 #bb3bc4 ,and if we did it with that mind1 that we might lay upon it holocausts1 and sacrifice1 and victims of peace offerings1 let him require and judge3 #bb3bd4 ,and not rather with this thought and design1 that we should say3 ,to morrow your children will say to our children3 ,what have you to do with the ,lord the ,god of ,israel8 #bb3be4 ,the ,lord hath put the river ,jordan for a border between us and you1 ,o ye children of ,ruben1 and ye children of ,gad3 and therefore you have no part in the ,lord4 ,and by this occasion your children shall turn away our children from the fear of the ,lord4 ,we therefore thought it best1 #bb3bf4 ,and said3 ,let us build us an altar1 not for holocausts1 nor to offer victims1 #bb3bg4 ,but for a testimony between us and you1 and our posterity and yours1 that we may serve the ,lord1 and that we may have a right to offer both holocausts1 and victims and sacrifices of peace offerings3 and that your children to morrow may not say to our children3 ,you have no part in the ,lord4 #bb3bh4 ,and if they will say so1 they shall answer them3 ,behold the altar of the ,lord1 which our fathers made1 not for holocausts1 nor for sacrifice1 but for a testimony between us and you4 #bb3bi4 ,god keep us from any such wickedness that we should revolt from the ,lord1 and leave off following his steps1 by building an altar to offer holocausts1 and sacrifices1 and victims1 beside the altar of the ,lord our ,god1 which is erected before his tabernacle4 #bb3cj4 ,and when ,phinees the priest1 and the princes of the embassage1 who were with him1 had heard this1 they were satisfied3 and they admitted most willingly the words of the children of ,ruben1 and ,gad1 and of the half tribe of ,manasses1 #bb3ca4 ,and ,phinees the priest the son of ,eleazar said to them3 ,now we know that the ,lord is with us1 because you are not guilty of this revolt1 and you have delivered the children of ,israel from the hand of the ,lord4 #bb3cb4 ,and he returned with the princes from the children of ,ruben and ,gad1 out of the land of ,galaad1 into the land of ,chanaan1 to the children of ,israel1 and brought them word again4 #bb3cc4 ,and the saying pleased all that heard it4 ,and the children of ,israel praised ,god1 and they no longer said that they would go up against them1 and fight1 and destroy the land of their possession4 #bb3cd4 ,and the children of ,ruben1 and the children of ,gad called the altar which they had built1 ,our testimony1 that the ,lord is ,god1 ,josue ,chapter #bc ,josue being old admonisheth the people to keep ,god's commandments3 and to avoid marriages and all society with the ,gentiles for fear of being brought to idolatry4 #bc3a4 ,and when a long time was passed1 after that the ,lord had given peace to ,israel1 all the nations round about being subdued and ,josue being now old1 and far advanced in years3 #bc3b4 ,josue called for all ,israel1 and for the elders1 and for the princes1 and for the judges1 and for the masters1 and said to them3 ,i am old1 and far advanced in years1 #bc3c4 ,and you see all that the ,lord your ,god hath done to all the nations round about1 how he himself hath fought for you3 #bc3d4 ,and now since he hath divided to you by lot all the land1 from the east of the ,jordan unto the great sea1 ant many nations yet remain3 #bc3e4 ,the ,lord your ,god will destroy them1 and take them away from before your face1 and you shall possess the land as he hath promised you4 #bc3f4 ,only take courage1 and be careful to observe all things that are written in the book of the law of ,moses3 and turn not aside from them neither to the right hand nor to the left3 #bc3g4 ,lest after that you are come in among the ,gentiles1 who will remain among you1 you should swear by the name of their gods1 and serve them1 and adore them3 #bc3h4 ,but cleave ye unto the ,lord your ,god1 as you have done until this day4 #bc3i4 ,and then the ,lord ,god will take away before your eyes nations that are great and very strong1 and no man shall be able to resist you4 #bc3aj4 ,one of you shall chase a thousand men of the enemies3 because the ,lord your ,god himself will fight for you1 as he hath promised4 #bc3aa4 ,this only take care of with all diligence1 that you love the ,lord your ,god4 #bc3ab4 ,but if you will embrace the errors of these nations that dwell among you1 and make marriages with them1 and join friendships3 #bc3ac4 ,know ye for a certainty that the ,lord your ,god will not destroy them before your face1 but they shall be a pit and a snare in your way1 and a stumbling-block at your side1 and stakes in your eyes1 till he take you away and destroy you from off this excellent land1 which he hath given you4 #bc3ad4 ,behold this day ,i am going into the way of all the earth1 and you shall know with all your mind that of all the words which the ,lord promised to perform for you1 not one hath failed1 #bc3ae4 ,therefore as he hath fulfilled in deed1 what he promised1 and all things prosperous have come3 so will he bring upon you all the evils he hath threatened1 till he take you away and destroy you from off this excellent land1 which he hath given you1 serve strange gods4 #bd3ag4 ,the ,lord our ,god he brought us and our fathers out of the land of ,egypt1 out of the house of bondage3 and did very great signs in our sight1 and preserved us in all the way by which we journeyed1 and among all the people through whom we passed4 #bd3ah4 ,and he hath cast out all the nations1 the ,amorrhite the inhabitant of the land into which we are come4 ,therefore greatness of the undertaking1 and the courage and constancy necessary to go through with it4 #bd3bj4 ,if you leave the ,lord1 and serve strange gods1 he will turn1 and will afflict you1 and will destroy you after all the good he hath done you4 #bd3ba4 ,and the people said to ,josue3 ,no1 it shall not be so as thou sayest1 but we will serve the ,lord4 #bd3bb4 ,and ,josue said to the people1 ,you are witnesses1 that you yourselves have chosen you the ,lord to serve him4 ,and they answered3 ,we are witnesses4 #bd3bc4 ,now therefore1 said he1 put away strange gods from among you1 and incline your hearts to the ,lord the ,god of ,israel4 #bd3bd4 ,and the people said to ,josue3 ,we will serve the ,lord our ,god1 and we will be obedient to his commandments4 #bd3be4 ,josue therefore on that day made a covenant1 and set before the people commandments and judgments in ,sichem4 #bd3bf4 ,and he wrote all these things in the volume of the law of the ,lord3 and he took a great stone1 commonly believed1 these last verses were added by ,samuel1 or some other prophet4 #bd3cj4 ,and they buried him in the border of his possession in ,thamnathsare1 which is situate in mount ,ephraim1 on the north side of mount ,gaas4 #bd3ca4 ,and ,israel served the ,lord all the days of ,josue1 and of the ancients that lived a long time after ,josue1 and that had known all the works of the ,lord which he had done in ,israel4 #bd3cb4 ,and the bones of ,joseph which the children of ,israel had taken out of ,egypt1 they buried in ,sichem1 in that part of the field which ,jacob had bought of the sons of ,hemor the father of ,sichem1 for a hundred young ewes1 and it was in the possession of the sons of ,joseph4 #bd3cc4 ,eleazar also the son of ,aaron died3 and they buried him in ,gabaath that
