inculcates the ordinances formerly given on mount ,sinai1 with other precepts not expressed before4 ,the ,hebrews1 from the first words in the book1 call it ,,elle ,,haddebarim4 ,deuteronomy ,chapter #a ,a repetition of what passed at ,sinai and ,cadesbarne3 and of the people's murmuring and their punishment4 #a3a4 ,these are the words1 which ,moses spoke to all ,israel beyond the ,jordan1 in the plain wilderness1 over against the ,red ,sea1 beetween ,pharan and ,thophel and ,laban and ,haseroth1 where there is very much gold4 #a3b4 ,eleven days' journey from ,horeb by the way of mount ,seir to ,cadesbarne4 #a3c4 ,in the fortieth year1 the eleventh month1 the first day of the month1 ,moses spoke to the children of ,israel all that the ,lord had commanded him to say to them3 #a3d4 ,after that he had slain ,sehon king of the ,amorrhites1 who dwelt in ,hesebon3 and ,og king of ,basan who abode in ,astaroth1 and in ,edrai1 #a3e4 ,beyond the ,jordan in the land of ,moab4 ,and ,moses began to expound the law1 and to say3 #a3f4 ,the ,lord our ,god spoke to us in ,horeb1 saying3 ,you have stayed long enough in this mountain3 #a3g4 ,turn you1 and come to the mountain of the ,amorrhites1 and to the other places that are next to it1 the plains and the hills and the vales towards the south1 and by the sea shore1 the land of the ,chanaanites1 and of ,libanus1 as far as the great river ,euphrates4 #a3h4 ,behold1 said he1 ,i have delivered it to you3 go in and possess it1 concerning which the ,lord swore to your fathers ,abraham1 ,isaac1 and ,jacob1 that he would give it to them1 and to their seed after them4 #a3i4 ,and ,i said to you at that time3 #a3aj4 ,i alone am not able to bear you3 for the ,lord your ,god hath multiplied you1 and you are this day as the stars of heaven1 for multitude4 #a3aa4 7,the ,lord ,god of your fathers add to this number many thousands1 and bless you as he hath spoken47 #a3ab4 ,i alone am not able to bear your business1 and the charge of you and your differences4 #a3ac4 ,let me have from among you wise and understanding men1 and such whose conversation is approved among your tribes1 that ,i may appoint them your rulers4 #a3ad4 ,then you answered me3 ,the thing is good which thou meanest to do4 #a3ae4 ,and ,i took out of your tribes men wise and honourable1 and appointed them rulers1 tribunes1 and centurions1 and officers over fifties1 and over tens1 who might teach you all things4 #a3af4 ,and ,i commanded them1 saying3 ,hear them1 and judge that which is just3 whether he be one of your country1 or a stranger4 #a3ag4 ,there shall be no difference of persons1 you shall hear the little as well as the great3 neither shall you respect any man's person1 because it is the judgment of ,god4 ,and if any thing seem hard to you1 refer it to me1 and ,i will hear it4 #a3ah4 ,and ,i commanded you all things that you were to do4 #a3ai4 ,and departing from ,horeb1 we passed through the terrible and vast wilderness1 which you saw1 by the way of the mountain of the ,amorrhite1 as the ,lord our ,god had commanded us4 ,and when we were come into ,cadesbarne1 #a3bj4 ,i said to you3 ,you are come to the mountain of the ,amorrhite1 which the ,lord our ,god will give to us4 #a3ba4 ,see the land which the ,lord thy ,god giveth thee3 go up and possess it1 as the ,lord our ,god hath spoken to thy fathers3 fear not1 nor be any way discouraged4 #a3bb4 ,and you came all to me1 and said3 ,let us send men who may view the land1 and bring us word what way we shall go up1 and to what cities we shall go4 #a3bc4 ,and because the saying pleased me1 ,i sent of you twelve men1 one of every tribe3 #a3bd4 ,who1 when they had set forward and had gone up to the mountains1 came as far as the valley of the cluster3 and having viewed the land1 #a3be4 ,taking of the fruits thereof1 to shew its fertility1 they brought them to us1 and said3 ,the land is good1 which the ,lord our ,god will give us4 #a3bf4 ,and you would not go up1 but being incredulous to the word of the ,lord our ,god1 #a3bg4 ,you murmured in your tents1 and said3 ,the ,lord hateth us1 and therefore he hath brought us out of the land of ,egypt1 that he might deliver us into the hand of the ,amorrhite1 and destroy us4 #a3bh4 ,whither shall we go up8 the messengers have terrified our hearts1 saying3 ,the multitude is very great1 and taller than we3 the cities are great1 and walled up to the sky1 we have seen the sons of the ,enacims there4 ,walled up to the sky444 ,a figurative expression1 signifying the walls to be very high4 #a3bi4 ,and ,i said to you3 ,fear not1 neither be ye afraid of them3 #a3cj4 ,the ,lord ,god1 who is your leader1 himself will fight for you1 as he did in ,egypt in the sight of all4 #a3ca4 ,and in the wilderness 7as thou hast seen7 the ,lord thy ,god hath carried thee1 as a man is wont to carry his little son1 all the way that you have come1 until you came to this place4 #a3cb4 ,and yet for all this you did not believe the ,lord your ,god1 #a3cc4 ,who went before you in the way1 and marked out the place1 wherein you should pitch your tents1 in the night shewing you the way by fire1 and in the day by the pillar of a cloud4 #a3cd4 ,and when the ,lord had heard the voice of your words1 he was angry and swore1 and said3 #a3ce4 ,not one of the men of this wicked generation shall see the good land1 which ,i promised with an oath to your fathers3 #a3cf4 ,except ,caleb the son of ,jephone3 for he shall see it1 and to him ,i will give the land that he hath trodden upon1 and to his children1 because he hath followed the ,lord4 #a3cg4 ,neither is his indignation against the people to be wondered at1 since the ,lord was angry with me also on your account1 and said3 ,neither shalt thou go in thither4 #a3ch4 ,but ,josue the son of ,nun1 thy minister1 he shall go in for thee3 exhort and encourage him1 and he shall divide the land by lot to ,israel4 #a3ci4 ,your children1 of whom you said that they should be led away captives1 and your sons who know not this day the difference of good and evil1 they shall go in3 and to them ,i will give the land1 and they shall possess it4 #a3dj4 ,but return you and go into the wilderness by the way of the ,red ,sea4 #a3da4 ,and you answered me3 ,we have sinned against the ,lord3 we will go up and fight1 as the ,lord our ,god hath commanded4 ,and when you went ready armed unto the mountain1 #a3db4 ,the ,lord said to me3 ,say to them3 ,go not up1 and fight not1 for ,i am not with you3 lest you fall before your enemies4 #a3dc4 ,i spoke1 and you hearkened not3 but resisting the commandment of the ,lord1 and swelling with pride1 you went up into the mountain4 #a3dd4 ,and the ,amorrhite that dwelt in the mountains coming out1 and meeting you1 chased you1 as bees do3 and made slaughter of you from ,seir as far as ,horma4 #a3de4 ,and when you returned and wept before the ,lord1 he heard you not1 neither would he yield to your voice4 #a3df4 ,so you abode in ,cadesbarne a long time4 ,deuteronomy ,chapter #b ,they are forbid to fight against the ,edomites1 ,moabites1 and ,ammonites4 ,their victory over ,sehon king of ,hesebon4 #b3a4 ,and departing from thence we came into the wilderness that leadeth to the ,red ,sea1 as the ,lord had spoken to me3 and we compassed mount ,seir a long time4 #b3b4 ,and the ,lord said to me3 #b3c4 ,you have compassed this mountain long enough3 go toward the north3 #b3d4 ,and command thou the people1 saying3 ,you shall pass by the borders of your brethren the children of ,esau1 who dwell in ,seir1 and they will be afraid of you4 #b3e4 ,take ye then good heed that you stir not against them4 ,for ,i will not give you of their land so much as the step of one foot can tread upon1 because ,i have given mount ,seir to ,esau1 for a possession4 #b3f4 ,you shall buy meats of them for money and shall eat3 you shall draw waters for money1 and shall drink4 #b3g4 ,the ,lord thy ,god hath blessed thee in every work of thy hands3 the ,lord thy ,god dwelling with thee1 knoweth thy journey1 how thou hast passed through this great wilderness1 for forty years1 and thou hast wanted nothing4 #b3h4 ,and when we had passed by our brethren the children of ,esau1 that dwelt in ,seir1 by the way of the plain from ,elath and from ,asiongaber1 we came to the way that leadeth to the desert of ,moab4 #b3i4 ,and the ,lord said to me3 ,fight not against the ,moabites1 neither go to battle against them3 for ,i will not give thee any of their land1 because ,i have given ,ar to the children of ,lot in possession4 #b3aj4 ,the ,emims first were the inhabitants thereof1 a people great1 and strong1 and so tall1 that like the race of the ,enacims1 #b3aa4 ,they were esteemed as giants1 and were like the sons of the ,enacims4 ,but the ,moabites call them ,emims4 #b3ab4 ,the ,horrhites also formerly dwelt in ,seir3 who being driven out and destroyed1 the children of ,esau dwelt there1 as ,israel did in the land of his possession1 which the ,lord gave him4 #b3ac4 ,then rising up to pass the torrent ,zared1 we came to it4 #b3ad4 ,and the time that we journeyed from ,cadesbarne till we passed over the torrent ,zared1 was thirty-eight years3 until all the generation of the men that were fit for war was consumed out of the camp1 as the ,lord had sworn3 #b3ae4 ,for his hand was against them1 that they should perish from the midst of the camp4 #b3af4 ,and after all the fighting men were dead1 #b3ag4 ,the ,lord spoke to me1 saying3 #b3ah4 ,thou shalt pass this day the borders of ,moab1 the city named ,ar3 #b3ai4 ,and when thou comest nigh the frontiers of the children of ,ammon1 take heed thou fight not against them1 nor once move to battle3 for ,i will not give thee of the land of the children of ,ammon1 because ,i have given it to the children of ,lot for a possession4 #b3bj4 ,it was accounted a land of giants3 and giants formerly dwelt in it1 whom the ,ammonites call ,zomzommims1 #b3ba4 ,a people great and many1 and of tall stature1 like the ,enacims whom the ,lord destroyed before their face3 and he made them to dwell in their stead1 #b3bb4 ,as he had done in favour of the children of ,esau1 that dwell in ,seir1 destroying the ,horrhites1 and delivering their land to them1 which they possess to this day4 #b3bc4 ,the ,hevites also1 that dwelt in ,haserim as far as ,gaza1 were expelled by the ,cappadocians3 who came out of ,cappadocia1 and destroyed them and dwelt in their stead4 #b3bd4 ,arise ye1 and pass the torrent ,arnon3 ,behold ,i have delivered into thy hand ,sehon king of ,hesebon the ,amorrhite1 and begin thou to possess his land and make war against him4 #b3be4 ,this day will ,i begin to send the dread and fear of thee upon the nations that dwell under the whole heaven3 that when they hear thy name they may fear and tremble1 and be in pain like women in travail4 #b3bf4 ,so ,i sent messengers from the wilderness of ,cademoth to ,sehon the king of ,hesebon with peaceable words1 saying3 #b3bg4 ,we will pass through thy land1 we will go along by the highway3 we will not turn aside neither to the right hand nor to the left4 #b3bh4 ,sell us meat for money1 that we may eat3 give us water for money and so we will drink4 ,we only ask that thou wilt let us pass through1 #b3bi4 ,as the children of ,esau have done1 that dwell in ,seir1 and the ,moabites1 that abide in ,ar3 until we come to the ,jordan1 and pass to the land which the ,lord our ,god will give us4 #b3cj4 ,and ,sehon the king of ,hesebon would not let us pass3 because the ,lord thy ,god had hardened his spirit1 and fixed his heart1 that he might be delivered into thy hands1 as now thou seest4 ,hardened1 etc444 ,that is1 in punishment of his past sins he left him to his own stubborn and perverse disposition1 which drew him to his ruin4 ,see the note on ,ex4 #g4c4 #b3ca4 ,and the ,lord said to me3 ,behold ,i have begun to deliver unto thee ,sehon and his land1 begin to possess it4 #b3cb4 ,and ,sehon came out to meet us with all his people to fight at ,jasa4 #b3cc4 ,and the ,lord our ,god delivered him to us3 and we slew him with his sons and all his people4 #b3cd4 ,and we took all his cities at that time1 killing the inhabitants of them1 men and women and children4 ,we left nothing of them3 #b3ce4 ,except the cattle which came to the share of them that took them3 and the spoils of the cities1 which we took3 #b3cf4 ,from ,aroer1 which is upon the bank of the torrent ,arnon1 a town that is situate in a valley1 as far as ,galaad4 ,there was not a village or city1 that escaped our hands3 the ,lord our ,god delivered all unto us3 #b3cg4 ,except the land of the children of ,ammon1 to which we approached not3 and all that border upon the torrent ,jeboc1 and the cities in the mountains1 and all the places which the ,lord our ,god forbade us4 ,deuteronomy ,chapter #c ,the victory over ,og king of ,basan4 ,ruben1 ,gad1 and half the tribe of ,manasses receive their possession on the other side of ,jordan4 #c3a4 ,then we turned and went by the way of ,basan3 and ,og the king of ,basan came out to meet us with his people to fight in ,edrai4 #c3b4 ,and the ,lord said to me3 ,fear him not3 because he is delivered into thy hand1 with all his people and his land3 and thou shalt do to him as thou hast done to ,sehon king of the ,amorrhites1 that dwelt in ,hesebon4 #c3c4 ,so the ,lord our ,god delivered into our hands1 ,og also1 the king of ,basan1 and all his people3 and we utterly destroyed them1 #c3d4 ,wasting all his cities at one time1 there was not a town that escaped us3 sixty cities1 all the country of ,argob the kingdom of ,og in ,basan4 #c3e4 ,all the cities were fenced with very high walls1 and with gates and bars1 besides innumerable towns that had no walls4 #c3f4 ,and we utterly destroyed them1 as we had done to ,sehon the king of ,hesebon1 destroying every city1 men and women and children3 #c3g4 ,but the cattle and the spoils of the cities we took for our prey4 #c3h4 ,and we took at that time the land out of the hand of the two kings of the ,amorrhites1 that were beyond the ,jordan3 from the torrent ,arnon unto the mount ,hermon1 #c3i4 ,which the ,sidonians call ,sarion1 and the ,amorrhites ,sanir3 #c3aj4 ,all the cities that are situate in the plain1 and all the land of ,galaad and ,basan as far as ,selcha and ,edrai1 cities of the kingdom of ,og in ,basan4 #c3aa4 ,for only ,og king of ,basan remained of the race of the giants4 ,his bed of iron is shewn1 which is in ,rabbath of the children of ,ammon1 being nine cubits long1 and four broad after the measure of the cubit of a man's hand4 #c3ab4 ,and we possessed the land at that time from ,aroer1 which is upon the bank of the torrent ,arnon1 unto the half of mount ,galaad3 and ,i gave the cities thereof to ,ruben and ,gad4 #c3ac4 ,and ,i delivered the other part of ,galaad1 and all ,basan the kingdom of ,og to the half tribe of ,manasses1 all the country of ,argob3 and all ,basan is called the ,land of giants4 #c3ad4 ,jair the son of ,manasses possessed all the country of ,argob unto the borders of ,gessuri1 and ,machati4 ,and he called ,basan by his own name1 ,havoth ,jair1 that is to say1 the towns of ,jair1 until this present day4 #c3ae4 ,to ,machir also ,i gave ,galaad4 #c3af4 ,and to the tribes of ,ruben and ,gad ,i gave of the land of ,galaad as far as the torrent ,arnon1 half the torrent1 and the confines even unto the torrent ,jeboc1 which is the border of the children of ,ammon3 #c3ag4 ,and the plain of the wilderness1 and the ,jordan1 and the borders of ,cenereth unto the sea of the desert1 which is the most salt sea1 to the foot of mount ,phasga eastward4 #c3ah4 ,and ,i commanded you at that time1 saying3 ,the ,lord your ,god giveth you this land for an inheritance1 go ye well appointed before your brethren the children of ,israel1 all the strong men of you4 #c3ai4 ,leaving your wives and children and cattle4 ,for ,i know you have much cattle1 and they must remain in the cities1 which ,i have delivered to you4 #c3bj4 ,until the ,lord give rest to your brethren1 as he hath given to you3 and they also possess the land1 which he will give them beyond the ,jordan3 then shall every man return to his possession1 which ,i have given you4 #c3ba4 ,i commanded ,josue also at that time1 saying3 ,thy eyes have seen what the ,lord your ,god hath done to these two kings3 so will he do to all the kingdoms to which thou shalt pass4 #c3bb4 ,fear them not3 for the ,lord your ,god will fight for you4 #c3bc4 ,and ,i besought the ,lord at that time1 saying3 #c3bd4 ,lord ,god1 thou hast begun to shew unto thy servant thy greatness1 and most mighty hand1 for there is no other ,god either in heaven or earth1 that is able to do thy works1 or to be compared to thy strength4 #c3be4 ,i will pass over therefore1 and will see this excellent land beyond the ,jordan1 and this goodly mountain1 and ,libanus4 #c3bf4 ,and the ,lord was angry with me on your account and heard me not1 but said to me3 ,it is enough3 speak no more to me of this matter4 #c3bg4 ,go up to the top of ,phasga1 and cast thy eyes round about to the west1 and to the north1 and to the south1 and to the east1 and behold it1 for thou shalt not pass this ,jordan4 #c3bh4 ,command ,josue1 and encourage and strengthen him3 for he shall go before this people1 and shall divide unto them the land which thou shalt see4 #c3bi4 ,and we abode in the valley over against the temple of ,phogor4 ,deuteronomy ,chapter #d ,moses exhorteth the people to keep ,god's commandments3 particularly to fly idolatry4 ,appointeth three cities of refuge1 on that side of the ,jordan4 #d3a4 ,and now1 ,o ,israel1 hear the commandments and judgments which ,i teach thee3 that doing them1 thou mayst live1 and entering in mayst possess the land which the ,lord the ,god of your fathers will give you4 #d3b4 ,you shall not add to the word that ,i speak to you1 neither shall you take away from it3 keep the commandments of the ,lord your ,god which ,i command you4 #d3c4 ,your eyes have seen all that the ,lord hath done against ,beelphegor1 how he hath destroyed all his worshippers from among you4 #d3d4 ,but you that adhere to the ,lord your ,god1 are all alive until this present day4 #d3e4 ,you know that ,i have taught you statutes and justices1 as the ,lord my ,god hath commanded me3 so shall you do them in the land which you shall possess3 #d3f4 ,and you shall observe1 and fulfil them in practice4 ,for this is your wisdom1 and understanding in the sight of nations1 that hearing all these precepts1 they may say3 ,behold a wise and understanding people1 a great nation4 #d3g4 ,neither is there any other nation so great1 that hath gods so nigh them1 as our ,god is present to all our petitions4 #d3h4 ,for what other nation is there so renowned that hath ceremonies1 and just judgments1 and all the law1 which ,i will set forth this day before our eyes8 #d3i4 ,keep thyself therefore1 and thy soul carefully4 ,forget not the words that thy eyes have seen1 and let them not go out of thy heart all the days of thy life4 ,thou shalt teach them to thy sons and to thy grandsons1 #d3aj4 ,from the day in which thou didst stand before the ,lord thy ,god in ,horeb1 when the ,lord spoke to me1 saying3 ,call together the people unto me1 that they may hear my words1 and may learn to fear me all the time that they live on the earth1 and may teach their children4 #d3aa4 ,and you came to the foot of the mount1 which burned even unto heaven3 and there was darkness1 and a cloud and obscurity in it4 #d3ab4 ,and the ,lord spoke to you from the midst of the fire4 ,you heard the voice of his words1 but you saw not any form at all4 #d3ac4 ,and he shewed you his covenant1 which he commanded you to do1 and the ten words that he wrote in two tables of stone4 #d3ad4 ,and he commanded me at that time that ,i should teach you the ceremonies and judgments which you shall do in the land1 that you shall possess4 #d3ae4 ,keep therefore your souls carefully4 ,you saw not any similitude in the day that the ,lord ,god spoke to you in ,horeb from the midst of the fire3 #d3af4 ,lest perhaps being deceived you might make you a graven similitude1 or image of male or female1 #d3ag4 ,the similitude of any beasts1 that are upon the earth1 or of birds1 that fly under heaven1 #d3ah4 ,or of creeping things1 that move on the earth1 or of fishes1 that abide in the waters under the earth3 #d3ai4 ,lest perhaps lifting up thy eyes to heaven1 thou see the sun and the moon1 and all the stars of heaven1 and being deceived by error thou adore and serve them1 which the ,lord thy ,god created for the service of all the nations1 that are under heaven4 #d3bj4 ,but the ,lord hath taken you and brought you out of the iron furnaces of ,egypt1 to make you his people of inheritance1 as it is this present day4 #d3ba4 ,and the ,lord was angry with me for your words1 and he swore that ,i should not pass over the ,jordan1 nor enter into the excellent land1 which he will give you4 #d3bb4 ,behold ,i die in this land1 ,i shall not pass over the ,jordan3 you shall pass1 and possess the goodly land4 #d3bc4 ,beware lest thou ever forget the covenant of the ,lord thy ,god1 which he hath made with thee3 and make to thyself a graven likeness of those things which the ,lord hath forbid to be made3 #d3bd4 ,because the ,lord thy ,god is a consuming fire1 a jealous ,god4 #d3be4 ,if you shall beget sons and grandsons1 and abide in the land1 and being deceived1 make to yourselves any similitude1 committing evil before the ,lord your ,god1 to provoke him to wrath3 #d3bf4 ,i call this day heaven and earth to witness1 that you shall quickly perish out of the land1 which1 when you have passed over the ,jordan1 you shall possess4 ,you shall not dwell therein long1 but the ,lord will destroy you1 #d3bg4 ,and scatter you among all nations1 and you shall remain a few among the nations1 to which the ,lord shall lead you4 #d3bh4 ,and there you shall serve gods1 that were framed with men's hands3 wood and stone1 that neither see1 nor hear1 nor eat1 nor smell4 #d3bi4 ,and when thou shalt seek there the ,lord thy ,god1 thou shalt find him3 yet so1 if thou seek him with all thy heart1 and all the affliction of thy soul4 #d3cj4 ,after all the things aforesaid shall find thee1 in the latter time thou shalt return to the ,lord thy ,god1 and shalt hear his voice4 #d3ca4 ,because the ,lord thy ,god is a merciful ,god3 he will not leave thee1 nor altogether destroy thee1 nor forget the covenant1 by which he swore to thy fathers4 #d3cb4 ,ask of the days of old1 that have been before thy time from the day that ,god created man upon the earth1 from one end of heaven to the other end thereof1 if ever there was done the like thing1 or it hath been known at any time1 #d3cc4 ,that a people should hear the voice of ,god speaking out of the midst of fire1 as thou hast heard1 and lived3 #d3cd4 ,if ,god ever did so as to go1 and take to himself a nation out of the midst of nations by temptations1 signs1 and wonders1 by fight1 and a strong hand1 and stretched out arm1 and horrible visions according to all the things that the ,lord your ,god did for you in ,egypt1 before thy eyes4 #d3ce4 ,that thou mightest know that the ,lord he is ,god1 and there is no other besides him4 #d3cf4 ,from heaven he made thee to hear his voice1 that he might teach thee4 ,and upon earth he shewed thee his exceeding great fire1 and thou didst hear his words out of the midst of the fire1 #d3cg4 ,because he loved thy fathers1 and chose their seed after them4 ,and he brought thee out of ,egypt1 going before thee with his great power1 #d3ch4 ,to destroy at thy coming very great nations1 and stronger than thou art1 and to bring thee in1 and give thee their land for a possession1 as thou seest at this present day4 #d3ci4 ,know therefore this day1 and think in thy heart that the ,lord he is ,god in heaven above1 and in the earth beneath1 and there is no other4 #d3dj4 ,keep his precepts and commandments1 which ,i command thee3 that it may be well with thee1 and thy children after thee1 and thou mayst remain a long time upon the land1 which the ,lord thy ,god will give thee4 #d3da4 ,then ,moses set aside three cities beyond the ,jordan at the east side1 #d3db4 ,that any one might flee to them who should kill his neighbour unwillingly1 and was not his enemy a day or two before1 and that he might escape to some one of these cities3 #d3dc4 ,bosor in the wilderness1 which is situate in the plains of the tribe of ,ruben3 and ,ramoth in ,galaad1 which is in the tribe of ,gad3 and ,golan in ,basan1 which is in the tribe of ,manasses4 #d3dd4 ,this is the law1 that ,moses set before the children of ,israel1 #d3de4 ,and these are the testimonies and ceremonies and judgments1 which he spoke to the children of ,israel1 when they came out of ,egypt1 #d3df4 ,beyond the ,jordan in the valley over against the temple of ,phogor1 in the land of ,sehon king of the ,amorrhites1 that dwelt in ,hesebon1 whom ,moses slew4 ,and the children of ,israel coming out of ,egypt1 #d3dg4 ,possessed his land1 and the land of ,og king of ,basan1 of the two kings of the ,amorrhites1 who were beyond the ,jordan towards the rising of the sun3 #d3dh4 ,from ,aroer1 which is situate upon the bank of the torrent ,arnon1 unto mount ,sion1 which is also called ,hermon1 #d3di4 ,all the plain beyond the ,jordan at the east side1 unto the sea of the wilderness1 and unto the foot of mount ,phasga4 ,deuteronomy ,chapter #e ,the ten commandments are repeated and explained4 #e3a4 ,and ,moses called all ,israel1 and said to them3 ,hear1 ,o ,israel1 the ceremonies and judgments1 which ,i speak in your ears this day3 learn them1 and fulfil them in work4 #e3b4 ,the ,lord our ,god made a covenant with us in ,horeb4 #e3c4 ,he made not the covenant with our fathers1 but with us1 who are now present and living4 #e3d4 ,he spoke to us face to face in the mount out of the midst of fire4 #e3e4 ,i was the mediator and stood between the ,lord and you at that time1 to shew you his words1 for you feared the fire1 and went not up into the mountain1 and he said3 #e3f4 ,i am the ,lord thy ,god1 who brought thee out of the land of ,egypt1 out of the house of bondage4 #e3g4 ,thou shalt not have strange gods in my sight4 #e3h4 ,thou shalt not make to thy self a graven thing1 nor the likeness of any things1 that are in heaven above1 or that are in the earth beneath1 or that abide in the waters under the earth4 #e3i4 ,thou shalt not adore them1 and thou shalt not serve them4 ,for ,i am the ,lord thy ,god1 a jealous ,god1 visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon their children unto the third and fourth generation1 to them that hate me1 #e3aj4 ,and shewing mercy unto many thousands1 to them that love me1 and keep my commandments4 #e3aa4 ,thou shalt not take the name of the ,lord thy ,god in vain3 for he shall not be unpunished that taketh his name upon a vain thing4 #e3ab4 ,observe the day of the sabbath1 to sanctify it1 as the ,lord thy ,god hath commanded thee4 #e3ac4 ,six days shalt thou labour1 and shalt do all thy works4 #e3ad4 ,the seventh is the day of the sabbath1 that is1 the rest of the ,lord thy ,god4 ,thou shalt not do any work therein1 thou nor thy son nor thy daughter1 nor thy manservant nor thy maidservant1 nor thy ox1 nor thy ass1 nor any of thy beasts1 nor the stranger that is within thy gates3 that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest1 even as thyself4 #e3ae4 ,remember that thou also didst serve in ,egypt1 and the ,lord thy ,god brought thee out from thence with a strong hand1 and a stretched out arm4 ,therefore hath he commanded thee that thou shouldst observe the sabbath day4 #e3af4 ,honour thy father and mother1 as the ,lord thy ,god hath commanded thee1 that thou mayst live a long time1 and it thou rather3 and hear all things that the ,lord our ,god shall say to thee1 and thou shalt speak to us1 and we will hear and will do them4 #e3bh4 ,and when the ,lord had heard this1 he said to me3 ,i have heard the voice of the words of this people1 which they spoke to thee3 they have spoken all things well4 #e3bi4 ,who shall give them to have such a mind1 to fear me1 and to keep all my to thee all my commandments1 and ceremonies and judgments3 which thou shalt teach them1 that they may do them in the land1 which ,i will give them for a possession4 #e3cb4 ,keep therefore and do the things which the ,lord ,god hath commanded you3 you shall not go aside neither to the right hand1 nor to the left4 #e3cc4 ,but you shall walk in the way that the ,lord your ,god hath commanded1 that you may live1 and it may be well with you1 and your days may be long in the land of your possession4 ,deuteronomy ,chapter #f ,an exhortation to the love of ,god1 and obedience to his law4 #f3a4 them sitting in thy house1 and walking on thy journey1 sleeping and rising4 #f3h4 ,and thou shalt bind them as a sign on thy hand1 and they shall be and shall move between thy eyes4 #f3i4 ,and thou shalt write them in the entry1 and on the doors of thy house4 #f3aj4 ,and when the ,lord thy ,god shall have brought thee into the land1 for which he swore to thy fathers ,abraham1 ,isaac1 and ,jacob3 and shall have given thee great and goodly cities1 which thou didst not build1 #f3aa4 ,houses full of riches1 which thou didst not set up1 cisterns which thou didst not dig1 vineyards and oliveyards1 which thou didst not plant1 #f3ab4 ,and thou shalt have eaten and be full3 #f3ac4 ,take heed deligently lest thou forget the ,lord1 who brought thee out of the land of ,egypt1 out of the house of bondage4 ,thou shalt fear the ,lord thy ,god1 and shalt serve him only1 and thou shalt swear by his name4 #f3ad4 ,you shall not go after the strange gods of all the nations1 that are round about you3 thee up4 #h3f4 ,that thou shouldst keep the commandments of the ,lord thy ,god1 and walk in his ways1 and fear him4 #h3g4 ,for the ,lord thy ,god will bring thee into a good land1 of brooks and of waters1 and of fountains3 in the plains of which and the hills deep rivers break out3 #h3h4 ,a land of wheat1 and barley1 and vineyards1 wherein fig trees and pomegranates1 and oliveyards grow3 a land neglect his commandments and judgments and ceremonies1 which ,i command thee this day3 #h3ab4 ,lest after thou hast eaten and art filled1 hast built goodly houses1 and dwelt in them1 #h3ac4 ,and shalt have herds of oxen and flocks of sheep1 and plenty of gold and of silver1 and of all things1 #h3ad4 ,thy heart be lifted up1 and thou remember not the ,lord thy ,god1 who brought thee out of the land of ,egypt1 out of the house of bondage3 #h3ae4 ,and was thy leader in the great and terrible wilderness1 wherein there was the serpent burning with his breath1 and the scorpion and the dipsas1 and no #h3af4 ,and fed thee in the wilderness with manna which thy fathers knew not4 ,and after he had afflicted and proved thee1 at the last he had mercy on thee1 #h3ag4 ,lest thou shouldst say in thy heart3 ,my own might1 and the strength of my own hand have achieved all these things for me4 #h3ah4 ,but remember the ,lord thy ,god1 that he hath given thee strength1 that he might fulfil his covenant1 concerning which he swore to thy fathers1 as this present day sheweth4 #h3ai4 ,but if thou forget the ,lord thy ,god1 and follow strange gods1 and serve and adore them3 behold now ,i foretell thee that thou shalt utterly perish4 #h3bj4 ,as the nations1 which the ,lord destroyed at thy entrance1 so shall you also perish1 if you be disobedient to the voice of the ,lord your ,god4 ,god spared them for his promise made to ,abraham1 ,isaac1 and ,jacob4 #i3a4 ,hear1 ,o ,israel3 ,thou shalt go over the ,jordan this day2 to possess nations very great1 and stronger than thyself1 cities great1 and walled up to the sky1 #i3b4 ,a people great and tall1 the sons of the ,enacims1 whom thou hast seen1 and heard of1 against whom no man is able to stand4 #i3c4 ,thou shalt know therefore this day that the ,lord thy ,god himself will pass over before thee1 a devouring and consuming fire1 to destroy and extirpate and bring them to nothing before thy face quickly1 as he hath spoken to thee4 #i3d4 ,say not in thy heart1 when the ,lord thy ,god shall have destroyed them in thy sight3 ,for my justice hath the ,lord brought me in to possess this land1 whereas these nations are destroyed for their wickedness4 #i3e4 ,for it is not for thy justices1 and the uprightness of thy heart that thou shalt go in to possess their lands3 but because they have done wickedly1 they are destroyed at thy coming in3 and that the ,lord might aaccomplish his word1 which he promised by oath to thy fathers ,abraham1 ,isaac1 and ,jacob4 #i3f4 ,know therefore that the ,lord thy ,god giveth thee not this excellent land in possession for thy justices1 for thou art a very stiffnecked people4 #i3g4 ,remember1 and forget not how thou provokedst the ,lord thy ,god to wrath in the wilderness4 ,from the day that thou camest out of ,egypt unto this place1 thou hast always strove against the ,lord4 #i3h4 ,for in ,horeb1 also thou didst provoke him1 and he was angry1 and would have destroyed thee1 #i3i4 ,when ,i went up into the mount to receive the tables of stone1 the tables of the covenant which the ,lord made with you3 and ,i continued in the mount forty days and nights1 neither eating bread1 nor drinking water4 #i3aj4 ,and the ,lord gave me two tables of stone written with the finger of ,god1 and containing all the words that he spoke to you in the mount from the midst of the fire1 when the people were assembled together4 #i3aa4 ,and when forty days were passed1 and as many nights1 the ,lord gave me the two tables of stone1 the tables of the covenant1 #i3ab4 ,and said to me3 ,arise1 and go down from hence quickly3 for thy people1 which thou hast brought out of ,egypt1 have quickly forsaken the way that thou hast shewn them1 and have made to themselves a molten idol4 #i3ac4 ,and again the ,lord said to me3 ,i see that this people is stiffnecked3 #i3ad4 ,let me alone that ,i may destroy them1 and abolish their name from under heaven1 and set thee over a nation1 that is greater and stronger than this4 #i3ae4 ,and when ,i came down from the burning mount1 and held the two tables of the covenant with both hands1 #i3af4 ,and saw that you had sinned against the ,lord your ,god1 and had made to yourselves a molten calf1 and had quickly forsaken his way1 which he had shewn you3 #i3ag4 ,i cast the tables out of my hands1 and broke them in your sight4 #i3ah4 ,and ,i fell down before the ,lord as before1 forty days and nights neither eating bread1 nor drinking water1 for all your sins1 which you had committed against the ,lord1 and had provoked him to wrath3 #i3ai4 ,for ,i feared his indignation and anger1 wherewith being moved against you1 he would have destroyed you4 ,and the ,lord heard me this time also4 #i3bj4 ,and he was exceeding angry against ,aaron also1 and would have destroyed him1 and ,i prayed in like manner for him4 #i3ba4 ,and your sin that you had committed1 that is1 the calf1 ,i took1 and burned it with fire1 and breaking it into pieces1 until it was as small as dust1 ,i threw it into the torrent1 which cometh down from the mountain4 #i3bb4 ,at the burning also1 and at the place of temptation1 and at the graves of lust you provoked the ,lord3 #i3bc4 ,and when he sent you from ,cadesbarne1 saying3 ,go up1 and possess the land that ,i have given you1 and you slighted the commandment of the ,lord your ,god1 and did not believe him1 neither would you hearken to his voice3 #i3bd4 ,but were always rebellious from the day that ,i began to know you4 #i3be4 ,and ,i lay prostrate before the ,lord forty days and nights1 in which ,i humbly besought him1 that he would not destroy you as he had threatened3 #i3bf4 ,and praying1 ,i said3 ,o ,lord ,god1 destroy not thy people1 and thy inheritance1 which thou hast redeemed in thy greatness1 whom thou hast brought out of ,egypt with a strong hand4 #i3bg4 ,remember thy servants ,abraham1 ,isaac1 and ,jacob3 look not on the stubbornness of this people1 nor on their wickedness and sin3 #i3bh4 ,lest perhaps the inhabitants of the land1 out of which thou hast brought us1 say3 ,the ,lord could not bring them into the land that he promised them1 and he hated them3 therefore he brought them out1 that he might kill them in the wilderness1 #i3bi4 ,who are thy people and thy inheritance1 whom thou hast brought out by thy great strength1 and in thy stretched out arm4 ,deuteronomy ,chapter #aj ,god giveth the second tables of the law3 a further exhortation to fear and serve the ,lord4 #aj3a4 ,at that time the ,lord said to me3 ,hew thee two tables of stone like the former1 and come up to me into the mount3 and thou shalt make an ark of wood1 #aj3b4 ,and ,i will write on the tables the words that were in them1 which thou brokest before1 and thou shalt put them in the ark4 #aj3c4 ,and ,i made an ark of setim wood4 ,and when ,i had hewn two tables of stone like the former1 ,i went up into the mount1 having them in my hands4 #aj3d4 ,and he wrote in the tables1 according as he had written before1 the ten words1 which the ,lord spoke to you in the mount from the midst of the fire1 when the people were assembled3 and he gave them to me4 #aj3e4 ,and returning from the mount1 ,i came down1 and put the tables into the ark1 that ,i had made1 and they are there till this present1 as the ,lord commanded me4 #aj3f4 ,and the children of ,israel removed their camp from ,beroth1 of the children of ,jacan into ,mosera1 where ,aaron died and was buried1 and ,eleazar his son succeeded him in the priestly office4 ,mosera444 ,by mount ,hor1 for there ,aaron died1 ,num4 #bj4 ,this and the following verses seem to be inserted by way of parenthesis4 #aj3g4 ,from thence they came to ,gadgad1 from which place they departed1 and camped in ,jetebatha1 in a land of waters and torrents4 #aj3h4 ,at that time he separated the tribe of ,levi1 to carry the ark of the covenant of the ,lord1 and to stand before him in the ministry1 and to bless in his name until this present day4 #aj3i4 ,wherefore ,levi hath no part nor possession with his brethren3 because the ,lord himself is his possession1 as the ,lord thy ,god promised him4 #aj3aj4 ,and ,i stood in the mount1 as before1 forty days and nights3 and the ,lord heard me this time also1 and would not destroy thee4 #aj3aa4 ,and he said to me3 ,go1 and walk before the people1 that they may enter1 and possess the land1 which ,i swore to their fathers that ,i would give them4 #aj3ab4 ,and now1 ,israel1 what doth the ,lord thy ,god require of thee1 but that thou fear the ,lord thy ,god1 and walk in his ways1 and love him1 and serve the ,lord thy ,god1 with all thy heart1 and with all thy soul3 #aj3ac4 ,and keep the commandments of the ,lord1 and his ceremonies1 which ,i command thee heart1 and stiffen your neck no more4 #aj3ag4 ,because the ,lord your ,god he is the ,god of gods1 and the ,lord of lords1 a great ,god and mighty and terrible1 who accepteth no person nor taketh bribes4 #aj3ah4 ,he doth judgment to the fatherless and the widow1 loveth the stranger1 and giveth him food and raiment4 #aj3ai4 ,and do you therefore love strangers1 because you also were strangers in the land of ,egypt4 #aj3bj4 ,thou shalt fear the ,lord thy ,god1 and serve him only3 to him thou shalt adhere1 and shalt swear by his name4 #aj3ba4 ,he is thy praise1 and thy ,god1 that hath done the ,lord your ,god1 his great doings and strong hand1 and stretched out arm1 #aa3c4 ,the signs and works which he did in the midst of ,egypt to king ,pharao1 and to all his land1 #aa3d4 ,and to all the host of the ,egyptians1 and to their horses and chariots3 how the waters of the ,red ,sea covered them1 when they pursued you1 and how the ,lord destroyed them until this present day3 #aa3e4 ,and what he hath done to you in the wilderness1 til you came to this place3 #aa3f4 ,and to ,dathan and ,abiron the sons of ,eliab1 who was the son of ,ruben3 whom the earth1 opening her mouth swallowed up ,i command you this day4 #bg3b4 ,and when you are passed over the ,jordan into the land which the ,lord thy ,god will give thee1 thou shalt set up great stones1 and shalt plaster them over with plaster1 #bg3c4 ,that thou mayst write on them all the words of this law1 when thou art passed over the ,jordan3 that thou mayst enter into the land which the ,lord thy ,god will give thee1 a land flowing with milk and honey1 as he swore to thy fathers4 #bg3d4 ,therefore when you are passed over the ,jordan1 set up the stones which ,i command you this day1 in mount ,hebal1 and thou shalt plaster them with plaster3 #bg3e4 ,and thou shalt build there an altar to the ,lord thy ,god1 of stones which iron hath not touched1 #bg3f4 ,and of stones not fashioned nor polished3 and thou shalt offer upon it holocausts to the ,lord thy ,god3 #bg3g4 ,and shalt immolate peace victims1 and eat there1 and feast before the ,lord thy ,god4 #bg3h4 ,and thou shalt write upon the stones all the words of this law plainly and clearly4 #bg3i4 ,and ,moses and the priests of the race of ,levi said to all ,israel3 ,attend1 and hear1 ,o ,israel3 ,this day thou art made the people of the ,lord thy ,god3 #bg3aj4 ,thou shalt hear his voice1 and do the commandments and justices which ,i command thee4 #bg3aa4 ,and ,moses commanded the people in that day1 saying3 #bg3ab4 ,these shall stand upon mount ,garizim to bless the people1 when you are passed the ,jordan3 ,simeon1 ,levi1 ,juda1 ,issachar1 ,joseph1 and ,benjamin4 #bg3ac4 ,and over against them shall stand on mount ,hebal to curse3 ,ruben1 ,gad1 and ,aser1 and ,zabulon1 ,dan1 and ,nephtali4 #bg3ad4 ,and the ,levites shall pronounce1 and say to all the men of ,israel with a loud voice3 #bg3ae4 ,cursed be the man that maketh a graven and molten thing1 the abomination of the ,lord1 the work of the hands of artificers1 and shall put it in a secret place3 and all the people shall answer and say3 ,amen4 #bg3af4 ,cursed be he that honoureth not his father and mother3 and all the people shall say3 ,amen4 #bg3ag4 ,cursed be he that removeth his neighbour's landmarks3 and all the people shall say3 ,amen4 #bg3ah4 ,cursed be he that maketh the blind to wander out of his way3 and all the people shall say3 ,amen4 #bg3ai4 ,cursed be he that perverteth the judgment of the stranger1 of the fatherless and the widow3 and all the people shall say3 ,amen4 #bg3bj4 ,cursed be he that lieth with his father's wife1 and uncovereth his bed3 and all the people shall say3 ,amen4 #bg3ba4 ,cursed be he that lieth with any beast3 and all the people shall say3 ,amen4 #bg3bb4 ,cursed be he that lieth with his sister1 the daughter of his father1 or of his mother3 and all the people shall say3 ,amen4 #bg3bc4 ,cursed be he that lieth with his mother-in-law3 and all the people shall say3 ,amen4 #bg3bd4 ,cursed be he that secretly killeth his neighbour3 and all the people shall say3 ,amen4 #bg3be4 ,cursed be he that taketh gifts1 to slay an innocent person3 and all the people shall say3 ,amen4 #bg3bf4 ,cursed be he that abideth not in the words of this law1 and fulfilleth them not in work3 and all the people shall say3 ,amen4 ,deuteronomy ,chapter #bh ,many blessings are promised to observers of ,god's commandments3 and curses threatened to transgressors4 #bh3a4 ,now if thou wilt hear the voice of all his commandments1 which ,i command thee this day1 the ,lord thy ,god will make thee higher than all the nations that are on the earth4 #bh3b4 ,and all these blessings shall come upon thee and overtake thee3 yet so if thou hear his precepts4 ,all these blessings1 etc444 ,in the ,old ,testament1 ,god promised temporal blessings to the keepers of his law1 heaven not being opened as yet2 and that gross and sensual people being more moved with present and sensible things4 ,but in the ,new ,testament the goods that are promised us are spiritual and eternal2 and temporal evils are turned into blessings4 #bh3c4 ,blessed shalt thou be in the city1 and blessed in the field4 #bh3d4 ,blessed shall be the fruit of thy womb1 and the fruit of thy ground1 and the fruit of thy cattle1 the droves of thy herds1 and the folds of thy sheep4 #bh3e4 ,blessed shall be thy barns and blessed thy stores4 #bh3f4 ,blessed shalt thou be coming in and going out4 #bh3g4 ,the ,lord shall cause thy enemies1 that rise up against thee1 to fall down before thy face3 one way shall they come out against thee1 and seven ways shall they flee before thee4 #bh3h4 ,the ,lord will send forth a blessing upon thy storehouses1 and upon all the works of thy hands3 and will bless thee in the land that thou shalt receive4 #bh3i4 ,the ,lord will raise thee up to be a holy people to himself1 as he swore to thee3 if thou keep the commandments of the ,lord thy ,god1 and walk in his ways4 #bh3aj4 ,and all the people of the earth shall see that the name of the ,lord is invocated upon thee1 and they shall fear thee4 #bh3aa4 ,the ,lord will make thee abound with all goods1 with the fruit of thy womb1 and the fruit of thy cattle1 with the fruit of thy land1 which the ,lord swore to thy fathers that he would give thee4 #bh3ab4 ,the ,lord will open his excellent treasure1 the heaven1 that it may give rain in due season3 and he will bless all the works of thy hands4 ,and thou shalt lend to many nations1 and shalt not borrow of any one4 #bh3ac4 ,and the ,lord shall make thee the head and not the tail3 and thou shalt be always above1 and not beneath3 yet so if thou wilt hear the commandments of the ,lord thy ,god which ,i command thee this day1 and keep and do them1 #bh3ad4 ,and turn not away from them neither to the right hand1 nor to the left1 nor follow strange gods1 nor worship them4 #bh3ae4 ,but if thou wilt not hear the voice of the ,lord thy ,god1 to keep and to do all his commandments and ceremonies1 which ,i command thee this day1 all these curses shall come upon thee1 and overtake thee4 ,all these curses1 etc444 ,thus ,god dealt with the transgressors of his law in the ,old ,testament3 but now he often suffers sinners to prosper in this world1 rewarding them for some little good they have done1 and reserving their punishment for the other world4 #bh3af4 ,cursed shalt thou be in the city1 cursed in the field4 #bh3ag4 ,cursed shall be thy barn1 and cursed thy stores4 #bh3ah4 ,cursed shall be the fruit of thy womb1 and the fruit of thy ground1 the herds of thy oxen1 and the flocks of thy sheep4 #bh3ai4 ,cursed shalt thou be coming in1 and cursed going out4 #bh3bj4 ,the ,lord shall send upon thee famine and hunger1 and a rebuke upon all the works which thou shalt do3 until he consume and destroy thee quickly1 for thy most wicked inventions1 by which thou hast forsaken me4 #bh3ba4 ,may the ,lord set the pestilence upon thee1 until he consume thee out of the land1 which thou shalt go in to possess4 #bh3bb4 ,may the ,lord afflict thee with miserable want1 with the fever and with cold1 with burning and with heat1 and with corrupted air and with blasting1 and pursue thee till thou perish4 #bh3bc4 ,be the heaven1 that is over thee1 of brass3 and the ground thou treadest on1 of iron4 #bh3bd4 ,the ,lord give thee dust for rain upon thy land1 and let ashes come down from heaven upon thee1 till thou be consumed4 #bh3be4 ,the ,lord make thee to fall down before thy enemies1 one way mayst thou go out against them1 and flee seven ways1 and be scattered throughout all the kingdoms of the earth4 #bh3bf4 ,and be thy carcass meat for all the fowls of the air1 and the beasts of the earth1 and be there none to drive them away4 #bh3bg4 ,the ,lord strike thee with the ulcer of ,egypt1 and the part of thy body1 by which the dung is cast out1 with the scab and with the itch3 so that thou canst not be healed4 #bh3bh4 ,the ,lord strike thee with madness and blindness and fury of mind4 #bh3bi4 ,and mayst thou grope at midday as the blind is wont to grope in the dark1 and not make straight thy ways4 ,and mayst thou at all times suffer wrong1 and be oppressed with violence1 and mayst thou have no one to deliver thee4 #bh3cj4 ,mayst thou take a wife1 and another sleep with her4 ,mayst thou build a house1 and not dwell therein4 ,mayest thou plant a vineyard and not gather the vintage thereof4 #bh3ca4 ,may thy ox be slain before thee1 and thou not eat thereof4 ,may thy ass be taken away in thy sight1 and not restored to thee4 ,may thy sheep be given to thy enemies1 and may there be none to help thee4 #bh3cb4 ,may thy sons and thy daughters be given to another people1 thy eyes looking on1 and languishing at the sight of them all the day1 and may there be no strength in thy hand4 #bh3cc4 ,may a people which thou knowest not1 eat the fruits of thy land1 and all thy labours3 and mayst thou always suffer oppression1 and be crushed at all times4 #bh3cd4 ,and be astonished at the terror of those things which thy eyes shall see3 #bh3ce4 ,may the ,lord strike thee with a very sore ulcer in the knees and in the legs1 and be thou incurable from the sole of the foot to the top of the head4 #bh3cf4 ,the ,lord shall bring thee1 and thy king1 whom thou shalt have appointed over thee1 into a nation which thou and thy fathers know not3 and there thou shalt serve strange gods1 wood and stone4 #bh3cg4 ,and thou shalt be lost1 as a proverb and a byword to all people1 among whom the ,lord shall bring thee in4 #bh3ch4 ,thou shalt cast much seed into the ground1 and gather little3 because the locusts shall consume all4 #bh3ci4 ,thou shalt plant a vineyard1 and dig it1 and shalt not drink the wine1 nor gather any thing thereof3 because it shall be wasted with worms4 #bh3dj4 ,thou shalt have olive trees in all thy borders1 and shalt not be anointed with the oil3 for the olives shall fall off and perish4 #bh3da4 ,thou shalt beget sons and daughters1 and shalt not enjoy them3 because they shall be led into captivity4 #bh3db4 ,the blast shall consume all the trees and the fruits of thy ground4 #bh3dc4 ,the stranger that liveth with thee in the land1 shall rise up over thee1 and shall be higher3 and thou shalt go down1 and be lower4 #bh3dd4 ,he shall lend to thee1 and thou shalt not lend to him4 ,he shall be as the head1 and thou shalt be the tail4 #bh3de4 ,and all these curses shall come upon thee1 and shall pursue and overtake thee1 till thou perish3 because thou heardst not the voice of the ,lord thy ,god1 and didst not keep his commandments and ceremonies which he commanded thee4 #bh3df4 ,and they shall be as signs and wonders on thee1 and on thy seed for ever4 #bh3dg4 ,because thou didst not serve the ,lord thy ,god with joy and gladness of heart1 for the abundance of all things3 #bh3dh4 ,thou shalt serve thy enemy1 whom the ,lord will send upon thee1 in hunger1 and thirst1 and nakedness1 and in want of all things3 and he shall put an iron yoke upon thy neck1 till he consume thee4 #bh3di4 ,the ,lord will bring upon thee a nation from afar1 and from the uttermost ends of the earth1 like an eagle that flyeth swiftly1 whose tongue thou canst not understand1 #bh3ej4 ,a most insolent nation1 that will shew no regard to the ancients1 nor have pity on the infant1 #bh3ea4 ,and will devour the fruit of thy cattle1 and the fruits of thy land3 until thou be destroyed1 and will leave thee no wheat1 nor wine1 nor oil1 nor herds of oxen1 nor flocks of sheep3 until he destroy thee4 #bh3eb4 ,and consume thee in all thy cities1 and thy strong and high wall be brought down1 wherein thou trustedst in all thy land4 ,thou shalt be besieged within thy gates in all thy land which the ,lord thy ,god will give thee3 #bh3ec4 ,and thou shalt eat the fruit of thy womb1 and the flesh of thy sons and of thy daughters1 which the ,lord thy ,god shall give thee1 in the distress and extremity wherewith thy enemy shall oppress thee4 #bh3ed4 ,the man that is nice among you1 and very delicate1 shall envy his own brother1 and his wife1 that lieth in his bosom1 #bh3ee4 ,so that he will not give them of the flesh of his children1 which he shall eat3 because he hath nothing else in the siege and the want1 wherewith thy enemies shall distress thee within all thy gates4 #bh3ef4 ,the tender and delicate woman1 that could not go upon the ground1 nor set down her foot for over much niceness and tenderness1 will envy her husband who lieth in her bosom1 the flesh of her son1 and of her daughter1 #bh3eg4 ,and the filth of the afterbirths1 that come forth from between her thighs1 and the children that are born the same hour4 ,for they shall eat them secretly for the want of all things1 in the siege and distress1 wherewith thy enemy shall oppress thee within thy gates4 #bh3eh4 ,if thou wilt not keep1 and fulfil all the words of this law1 that are written in this volume1 and fear his glorious and terrible name3 that is1 ,the ,lord thy ,god3 #bh3ei4 ,the ,lord shall increase thy plagues1 and the plagues of thy seed1 plagues great and lasting1 infirmities grievous and perpetual4 #bh3fj4 ,and he shall bring back on thee all the afflictions of ,egypt1 which thou wast afraid of1 and they shall stick fast to thee4 #bh3fa4 ,moreover the ,lord will bring upon thee all the diseases1 and plagues1 that are not written in the volume of this law till he consume thee3 #bh3fb4 ,and you shall remain few in number1 who before were as the stars of heaven for multitude1 because thou heardst not the voice of the ,lord thy ,god4 #bh3fc4 ,and as the ,lord rejoiced upon you before doing good to you1 and multiplying you3 so he shall rejoice destroying and bringing you to nought1 so that you shall be taken away from the land which thou shalt go in to possess4 #bh3fd4 ,the ,lord shall scatter thee among all people1 from the farthest parts of the earth to the ends thereof3 and there thou shalt serve strange gods1 which both thou art ignorant of and thy fathers1 wood and stone4 #bh3fe4 ,neither shalt thou be quiet1 even in those nations1 nor shall there be any rest for the sole of thy foot4 ,for the ,lord will give thee a fearful heart1 and languishing eyes1 and a soul consumed with pensiveness3 #bh3ff4 ,and thy life shall be as it were hanging before thee4 ,thou shalt fear night and day1 neither shalt thou trust thy life4 #bh3fg4 ,in the morning thou shalt say3 ,who will grant me evening8 and at evening3 ,who will grant me morning8 for the fearfulness of thy heart1 wherewith thou shalt be terrified1 and for those things which thou shalt see with thy eyes4 #bh3fh4 ,the ,lord shall bring thee again with ships into ,egypt1 by the way whereof he said to thee that thou shouldst see it no more4 ,there shalt thou be set to sale to thy enemies for bondmen and bondwomen1 and no man shall buy you4 ,deuteronomy ,chapter #bi ,the covenant is solemnly confirmed between ,god and his people4 ,threats against those that shall break it4 #bi3a4 ,these are the words of the covenant which the ,lord commanded ,moses to make with the children of ,israel in the land of ,moab3 beside that covenant which he made with them in ,horeb4 #bi3b4 ,and ,moses called all ,israel1 and said to them3 ,you have seen all the things that the ,lord did before you in the land of ,egypt to ,pharao1 and to all his servants1 and to his whole land4 #bi3c4 ,the great temptations1 which thy eyes have seen1 those mighty signs and wonders1 #bi3d4 ,and the ,lord hath not given you a heart to understand1 and eyes to see1 and ears that may hear1 unto this present day4 ,hath not given you1 etc444 ,through your own fault and because you resisted his grace4 #bi3e4 ,he hath brought you forty years through the desert3 your garments are not worn out1 neither are the shoes of your feet consumed with age4 #bi3f4 ,you have not eaten bread1 nor have you drunk wine or strong drink3 that you might know that ,i am the ,lord your ,god4 #bi3g4 ,and you came to this place3 and ,sehon king of ,hesebon1 and ,og king of ,basan1 came out against us to fight4 ,and we slew them4 #bi3h4 ,and took their land1 and delivered it for a possession to ,ruben and ,gad1 and the half tribe of ,manasses4 #bi3i4 ,keep therefore the words of this covenant1 and fulfil them3 that you may understand all that you do4 #bi3aj4 ,you all stand this day before the ,lord your ,god1 your princes1 and tribes1 and ancients1 and doctors1 all the people of ,israel1 #bi3aa4 ,your children and your wives1 and the stranger that abideth with thee in the camp1 besides the hewers of wood1 and them that bring water3 #bi3ab4 ,that thou mayst pass in the covenant of the ,lord thy ,god1 and in the oath which this day the ,lord thy ,god maketh with thee4 #bi3ac4 ,that he may raise thee up a people to himself1 and he may be thy ,god as he hath spoken to thee1 and as he swore to thy fathers ,abraham1 ,isaac1 and ,jacob4 #bi3ad4 ,neither with you only do ,i make this covenant1 and confirm these oaths1 #bi3ae4 ,but with all that are present and that are absent4 #bi3af4 ,for you know how we dwelt in the land of ,egypt1 and how we have passed through the midst of nations1 and passing through them1 #bi3ag4 ,you have seen their abominations and filth1 that is to say1 their idols1 wood and stone1 silver and gold1 which they worshipped4 #bi3ah4 ,lest perhaps there should be among you a man or a woman1 a family or a tribe1 whose heart is turned away this day from the ,lord our ,god1 to go and serve the gods of those nations3 and there should be among you a root bringing forth gall and bitterness4 #bi3ai4 ,and when he shall hear the words of this oath1 he should bless himself in his heart saying3 ,i shall have peace1 and will walk on in the naughtiness of my heart3 and the drunken may consume the thirsty1 ,the drunken1 etc41 absumat ebria sitientem444 ,it is a proverbial expression1 which may either be understood1 as spoken by the sinner1 blessing1 that is1 flattering himself in his sins with the imagination of peace1 and so great an abundance as may satisfy1 and as it were1 consume all thirst and want3 or it may be referred to the root of bitterness1 spoken of before1 which being drunken with sin may attract1 and by that means consume1 such as thirst after the like evils4 #bi3bj4 ,and the ,lord should not forgive him3 but his wrath and jealousy against that man should be exceedingly enkindled at that time1 and all the curses that are written in this volume should light upon him3 and the ,lord should blot out his name from under heaven1 #bi3ba4 ,and utterly destroy him out of all the tribes of ,israel1 according to the curses that are contained in the book of this law and covenant3 #bi3bb4 ,and the following generation shall say1 and the children that shall be born hereafter1 and the strangers that shall come from afar1 seeing the plagues of that land and the evils wherewith the ,lord hath afflicted it1 #bi3bc4 ,burning it with brimstone1 and the heat of salt1 so that it cannot be sown any more1 nor any green thing grow therein1 after the example of the destruction of ,sodom and ,gomorrha1 ,adama and ,seboim1 which the ,lord destroyed in his wrath and indignation3 #bi3bd4 ,and all the nations shall say3 ,why hath the ,lord done thus to this land8 what meaneth this exceeding great heat of his wrath8 #bi3be4 ,and they shall answer3 ,because they forsook the covenant of the ,lord1 which he made with their fathers1 when he brought them out of the land of ,egypt3 #bi3bf4 ,and they have served strange gods1 and adored them1 whom they knew not1 and for whom they had not been assigned3 #bi3bg4 ,therefore the wrath of the ,lord was kindled against this land1 to bring upon it all the curses that are written in this volume3 #bi3bh4 ,and he hath cast them out of their land1 in anger and in wrath1 and in very great indignation1 and hath thrown them into a strange land1 as it is seen this day4 #bi3bi4 ,secret things to the ,lord our ,god3 things that are manifest1 to us and to our children for ever1 that we may do all the words of this law4 ,secret things1 etc444 ,as much as to say1 secret things belong to1 and are known to1 ,god alone2 our business must be to observe what he has revealed and manifested to us1 and to direct our lives accordingly4 ,deuteronomy ,chapter #cj ,great mercies are promised to the penitent3 ,god's commandment is feasible4 ,life and death are set before them4 #cj3a4 ,now when all these things shall be come upon thee1 the blessing or the curse1 which ,i have set forth before thee1 and thou shalt be touched with repentance of thy heart among all the nations1 into which the ,lord thy ,god shall have scattered thee1 #cj3b4 ,and shalt return to him1 and obey his commandments1 as ,i command thee this day1 thou and thy children1 with all thy heart1 and with all thy soul3 #cj3c4 ,the ,lord thy ,god will bring back again thy captivity1 and will have mercy on thee1 and gather thee again out of all the nations1 into which he scattered thee before4 #cj3d4 ,if thou be driven as far as the poles of heaven1 the ,lord thy ,god will fetch thee back from hence1 #cj3e4 ,and will take thee to himself1 and bring thee into the land which thy fathers possessed1 and thou shalt possess it3 and blessing thee1 he will make thee more numerous than were thy fathers4 #cj3f4 ,the ,lord thy ,god will circumcise thy heart1 and the heart of thy seed3 that thou mayst love the ,lord thy ,god with all thy heart and with all thy soul1 that thou mayst live4 #cj3g4 ,and he will turn all these curses upon thy enemies1 and upon them that hate and persecute thee4 #cj3h4 ,but thou shalt return1 and hear the voice of the ,lord thy ,god1 and shalt do all the commandments which ,i command thee this day3 #cj3i4 ,and the ,lord thy ,god will make thee abound in all the works of thy hands1 in the fruit of thy womb1 and in the fruit of thy cattle1 in the fruitfulness of thy land1 and in the plenty of all things4 ,for the ,lord will return to rejoice over thee in all good things1 as he rejoiced in thy fathers3 #cj3aj4 ,yet so if thou hear the voice of the ,lord thy ,god1 and keep his precepts and ceremonies1 which are written in this law3 and return to the ,lord thy ,god with all thy heart1 and with all thy soul4 #cj3aa4 ,this commandment1 that ,i command thee this day is not above thee1 nor far off from thee3 #cj3ab4 ,nor is it in heaven1 that thou shouldst say3 ,which of us can go up to heaven to bring it unto us1 and we may hear and fulfil it in work8 #cj3ac4 ,nor is it beyond the sea3 that thou mayst excuse thyself1 and say3 ,which of us can cross the sea1 and bring it unto us3 that we may hear1 and do that which is commanded8 #cj3ad4 ,but the word is very nigh unto thee1 in thy mouth and in thy heart1 that thou mayst do it4 #cj3ae4 ,consider that ,i have set before thee this day life and good1 and on the other hand death and evil3 #cj3af4 ,that thou mayst love the ,lord thy ,god1 and walk in his ways1 and keep his commandments and ceremonies and judgments1 and bless thee in the land1 which thou shalt go in to possess4 #cj3ag4 ,but if thy heart be turned away1 so that thou wilt not hear1 and being deceived with error thou adore strange gods1 and serve them3 #cj3ah4 ,i foretell thee this day that thou shalt perish1 and shalt remain but a short time in the land1 to which thou shalt pass over the ,jordan1 and shalt go in to possess it4 #cj3ai4 ,i call heaven and earth to witness this day1 that ,i have set before you life and death1 blessing and cursing4 ,choose therefore life1 that both thou and thy seed may live3 #cj3bj4 ,and that thou mayst love the ,lord thy ,god1 and obey his voice1 and adhere to him 7for he is thy life1 and the length of thy days17 that thou mayst dwell in the land1 for which the ,lord swore to thy fathers ,abraham1 ,isaac1 and ,jacob that he would give it them4 ,deuteronomy ,chapter #ca ,moses encourageth the people1 and ,josue1 who is appointed to succeed him4 ,he delivereth the law to the priests4 ,god foretelleth that the people will often forsake him1 and that he will punish them4 ,he commandeth ,moses to write a canticle1 as a constant remembrancer of the law4 #ca3a4 ,and ,moses went1 and spoke all these words to all ,israel1 #ca3b4 ,and he said to them3 ,i am this day a hundred and twenty years old1 ,i can no longer go out and come in1 especially as the ,lord also hath said to me3 ,thou shalt not pass over this ,jordan4 #ca3c4 ,the ,lord thy ,god then will pass over before thee3 he will destroy all these nations in thy sight1 and thou shalt possess them3 and this ,josue shall go over before thee1 as the ,lord hath spoken4 #ca3d4 ,and the ,lord shall do to them as he did to ,sehon and ,og the kings of the ,amorrhites1 and to their land1 and shall destroy them4 #ca3e4 ,therefore when the ,lord shall have delivered these also to you1 you shall do in like manner to them as ,i have commmanded you4 #ca3f4 ,do manfully and be of good heart3 fear not1 nor be ye dismayed at their sight3 for the ,lord thy ,god he himself is thy leader1 and will not leave thee nor forsake thee4 #ca3g4 ,and ,moses called ,josue1 and said to him before all ,israel3 ,take courage1 and be valiant3 for thou shalt bring this people into the land which the ,lord swore he would give to their fathers1 and thou shalt divide it by lot4 #ca3h4 ,and the ,lord who is your leader1 he himself will be with thee3 he will not leave thee1 nor forsake thee3 fear not1 neither be dismayed4 #ca3i4 ,and ,moses wrote this law1 and delivered it to the priests the sons of ,levi1 who carried the ark of the covenant of the ,lord1 and to all the ancients of ,israel4 #ca3aj4 ,and he commanded them1 saying3 ,after seven years1 in the year of remission1 in the feast of tabernacles1 #ca3aa4 ,when all ,israel come together1 to appear in the sight of the ,lord thy ,god in the place which the ,lord shall choose1 thou shalt read the words of this law before all ,israel1 in their hearing4 #ca3ab4 ,and the people being all assembled together1 both men and women1 children and strangers1 that are within thy gates3 that hearing they may learn1 and fear the ,lord your ,god1 and keep1 and fulfil all the words of this law3 #ca3ac4 ,that their children also1 who now are ignorant1 may hear1 and fear the ,lord their ,god1 all the days that they live in the land whither you are going over the ,jordan to possess it4 #ca3ad4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,behold the days of thy death are nigh3 call ,josue1 and stand ye in the tabernacle of the testimony1 that ,i may give him a charge4 ,so ,moses and ,josue went and stood in the tabernacle of the testimony3 #ca3ae4 ,and the ,lord appeared there in the pillar of a cloud1 which stood in the entry of the tabernacle4 #ca3af4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,behold thou shalt sleep with thy fathers1 and this people rising up will go a fornicating after strange gods in the land1 to which it goeth in to dwell3 there will they forsake me1 and will make void the covenant1 which ,i have made with them1 #ca3ag4 ,and my wrath shall be kindled against them in that day3 and ,i will forsake them1 and will hide my face from them1 and they shall be devoured3 all evils and afflictions shall find them1 so that they shall say in that day3 ,in truth it is because ,god is not with me1 that these evils have found me4 #ca3ah4 ,but ,i will hide1 and cover my face in that day1 for all the evils which they have done1 because they have followed strange gods4 #ca3ai4 ,now therefore write you this canticle1 and teach the children of ,israel3 that they may know it by heart1 and sing it by mouth1 and this song may be unto me for a testimony among the children of ,israel4 #ca3bj4 ,for ,i will bring them into the land1 for which ,i swore to their fathers1 that floweth with milk and honey4 ,and when they have eaten1 and are full and fat1 they will turn away after strange gods1 and will serve them3 and will despise me1 and make void my covenant4 #ca3ba4 ,and after many evils and afflictions shall have come upon them1 this canticle shall answer them for a testimony1 which no oblivion shall take away out of the mouth of their seed4 ,for ,i know their thoughts1 and what they are about to do this day1 before that ,i bring them into the land which ,i have promised them4 #ca3bb4 ,moses therefore wrote the canticle1 and taught it to the children of ,israel4 #ca3bc4 ,and the ,lord commanded ,josue the son of ,nun1 and said3 ,take courage1 and be valiant3 for thou shalt bring the children of ,israel into the land which ,i have promised1 and ,i will be with thee4 #ca3bd4 ,therefore after ,moses had wrote the words of this law in a volume1 and finished it3 #ca3be4 ,he commanded the ,levites1 who carried the ark of the covenant of the ,lord1 saying3 #ca3bf4 ,take this book1 and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the ,lord your ,god3 that it may be there for a testimony against thee4 #ca3bg4 ,for ,i know thy obstinacy1 and thy most stiff neck4 ,while ,i am yet living1 and going in with you1 you have always been rebellious against the ,lord3 how much more when ,i shall be dead8 #ca3bh4 ,gather unto me all the ancients of your tribes1 and your doctors1 and ,i will speak these words in their hearing1 and will call heaven and earth to witness against them4 #ca3bi4 ,for ,i know that1 after my death1 you will do wickedly1 and will quickly turn aside form the way that ,i have commanded you3 and evils shall come upon you in the latter times1 when you shall do evil in the sight of the ,lord1 to provoke him by the works of your hands4 #ca3cj4 ,moses therefore spoke1 in the hearing of the whole assembly of ,israel1 the words of this canticle1 and finished it even to the end4 ,deuteronomy ,chapter #cb ,a canticle for the remembrance of the law4 ,moses is commanded to go up into a mountain1 from whence he shall see the promised land but not enter into it4 #cb3a4 ,hear1 ,o ye heavens1 the things ,i speak1 let the earth give ear to the words of my mouth4 #cb3b4 ,let my doctrine gather as the rain1 let my speech distil as the dew1 as a shower upon the herb1 and as drops upon the grass4 #cb3c4 ,because ,i will invoke the name of the ,lord3 give ye magnificence to our ,god4 #cb3d4 ,the works of ,god are perfect1 and all his ways are judgments3 ,god is faithful and without any iniquity1 he is just and right4 #cb3e4 ,they have sinned against him1 and are none of his children in their filth3 they are a wicked and perverse generation4 #cb3f4 ,is this the return thou makest to the ,lord1 ,o foolish and senseless people8 ,is not he thy father1 that hath possessed thee1 and made thee1 and created thee8 #cb3g4 ,remember the days of old1 think upon every generation3 ask thy father1 and he will declare to thee3 thy elders and they will tell thee4 #cb3h4 ,when the ,most ,high divided the nations3 when he separated the sons of ,adam1 he appointed the bounds of people according to the number of the children of ,israel4 #cb3i4 ,but the ,lord's portion is his people3 ,jacob the lot of his inheritance4 #cb3aj4 ,he found him in a desert land1 in a place of horror1 and of vast wilderness3 he led him about1 and taught him3 and he kept him as the apple of his eye4 #cb3aa4 ,as the eagle enticing her young to fly1 and hovering over them1 he spread his wings1 and hath taken him and carried him on his shoulders4 #cb3ab4 ,the ,lord alone was his leader3 and there was no strange god with him4 #cb3ac4 ,he set him upon high land3 that he might eat the fruits of the fields1 that he might suck honey out of the rock1 and oil out of the hardest stone1 #cb3ad4 ,butter of the herd1 and milk of the sheep with the fat of lambs1 and of the rams of the breed of ,basan3 and goats with the marrow of wheat1 and might drink the purest blood of the grape4 #cb3ae4 ,the beloved grew fat1 and kicked3 he grew fat1 and thick and gross1 he forsook ,god who made him1 and departed from ,god his saviour4 #cb3af4 ,they provoked him by strange gods1 and stirred him up to anger1 with their abominations4 #cb3ag4 ,they sacrificed to devils and not to ,god3 to gods whom they knew not3 that were newly come up1 whom their fathers worshipped not4 #cb3ah4 ,thou hast forsaken the ,god that begot thee1 and hast forgotten the ,lord that created thee4 #cb3ai4 ,the ,lord saw1 and was moved to wrath3 because his own sons and daughters provoked him4 #cb3bj4 ,and he said3 ,i will hide my face from them1 and will consider what their last end shall be3 for it is a perverse generation1 and unfaithful children4 #cb3ba4 ,they have provoked me with that which was no god1 and have angered me with their vanities3 and ,i will provoke them with that which is no people1 and will vex them with a foolish nation4 #cb3bb4 ,a fire is kindled in my wrath1 and shall burn even to the lowest hell3 and shall devour the earth with her increase1 and shall burn the foundations of the mountains4 #cb3bc4 ,i will heap evils upon them1 and will spend my arrows among them4 #cb3bd4 ,they shall be consumed with famine1 and birds shall devour them with a most bitter bite3 ,i will send the teeth of beasts upon them1 with the fury of creatures that trail upon the ground1 and of serpents4 #cb3be4 ,without1 the sword shall lay them waste1 and terror within1 both the young man and the virgin1 the sucking child with the man in years4 #cb3bf4 ,i said3 ,where are they8 ,i will make the memory of them to cease from among men4 #cb3bg4 ,but for the wrath of the enemies ,i have deferred it3 lest perhaps their enemies might be proud1 and should say3 ,our mighty hand1 and not the ,lord1 hath done all these things4 #cb3bh4 ,they are a nation without counsel1 and without wisdom4 #cb3bi4 ,o that they would be wise and would understand1 and would provide for their last end4 #cb3cj4 ,how should one pursue after a thousand1 and two chase ten thousand8 ,was it not1 because their ,god had sold them1 and the ,lord had shut them up8 #cb3ca4 ,for our ,god is not as their gods3 our enemies themselves are judges4 #cb3cb4 ,their vines are of the vineyard of ,sodom1 and of the suburbs of ,gomorrha3 their grapes are grapes of gall1 and their clusters most bitter4 #cb3cc4 ,their wine is the gall of dragons1 and the venom of asps1 which is incurable4 #cb3cd4 ,are not these things stored up with me1 and sealed up in my treasures8 #cb3ce4 ,revenge is mine1 and ,i will repay them in due time1 that their foot may slide3 the day of destruction is at hand1 and the time makes haste to come4 #cb3cf4 ,the ,lord will judge his people1 and will have mercy on his servants3 he shall see that their hand is weakened1 and that they who were shut up have also failed1 and they that remained are consumed4 #cb3cg4 ,and he shall say3 ,where are their gods1 in whom they trusted8 #cb3ch4 ,of whose victims they ate the fat1 and drank the wine of their drink offerings3 let them arise and help you1 and protect you in your distress4 #cb3ci4 ,see ye that ,i alone am1 and there is no other ,god besides me3 ,i will kill and ,i will make to live3 ,i will strike1 and ,i will heal1 and there is none that can deliver out of my hand4 #cb3dj4 ,i will lift up my hand to heaven1 and ,i will say3 ,i live for ever4 #cb3da4 ,if ,i shall whet my sword as the lightning1 and my hand take hold on judgment3 ,i will render vengeance to my enemies1 and repay them that hate me4 #cb3db4 ,i will make my arrows drunk with blood1 and my sword shall devour flesh1 of the blood of the slain and of the captivity1 of the bare head of the enemies4 #cb3dc4 ,praise his people1 ye nations1 for he will revenge the blood of his servants3 and will render vengeance to their enemies1 and he will be merciful to the land of his people4 #cb3dd4 ,so ,moses came and spoke all the words of this canticle in the ears of the people1 and ,josue the son of ,nun4 #cb3de4 ,and he ended all these words1 speaking to all ,israel4 #cb3df4 ,and he said to them3 ,set your hearts on all the words1 which ,i testify to you this day3 which you shall command your children to observe and to do1 and to fulfil all that is written in this law3 #cb3dg4 ,for they are not commanded you in vain1 but that every one should live in them1 and that doing them you may continue a long time in the land whither you are going over the ,jordan to possess it4 #cb3dh4 ,and the ,lord spoke to ,moses the same day1 saying3 #cb3di4 ,go up into this mountain ,abarim1 7that is to say1 of passages17 unto mount ,nebo1 which is in the land of ,moab over against ,jericho3 and see the land of ,chanaan1 which ,i will deliver to the children of ,israel to possess1 and die thou in the mountain4 #cb3ej4 ,when thou art gone up into it thou shalt be gathered to thy people1 as ,aaron thy brother died in mount ,hor1 and was gathered to his people3 #cb3ea4 ,because you trespassed against me in the midst of the children of ,israel1 at the waters of contradiction1 in ,cades of the desert of ,sin3 and you did not sanctify me among the children of ,israel4 #cb3eb4 ,thou shalt see the land before thee1 which ,i will give to the children of ,israel1 but thou shalt not enter into it4 ,deuteronomy ,chapter #cc ,moses before his death blesseth the tribes of ,israel4 #cc3a4 ,this is the blessing1 wherewith the man of ,god1 ,moses1 blessed the children of ,israel1 before his death4 #cc3b4 ,and he said3 ,the ,lord came from ,sinai1 and from ,seir he rose up to us3 he hath appeared from mount ,pharan1 and with him thousands of saints4 ,in his right hand a fiery law4 #cc3c4 ,he hath loved the people1 all the saints are in his hand3 and they that approach to his feet1 shall receive of his doctrine4 #cc3d4 ,moses commanded us a law1 the inheritance of the multitude of ,jacob4 #cc3e4 ,he shall be king with the most right1 the princes of the people1 being assembled with the tribes of ,israel4 #cc3f4 ,let ,ruben live1 and not die1 and be he small in number4 #cc3g4 ,this is the blessing of ,juda4 ,hear1 ,o ,lord1 the voice of ,juda1 and bring him in unto his people3 his hands shall fight for him1 and he shall be his helper against his enemies4 #cc3h4 ,to ,levi also he said3 ,thy perfection1 and thy doctrine be to thy holy man1 whom thou hast proved in the temptation1 and judged at the waters of contradiction3 ,holy man444 ,aaron and his successors in the priesthood4 #cc3i4 ,who hath said to his father1 and to his mother3 ,i do not know you2 and to his bretheren3 ,i know you not3 and their own children they have not known4 ,these have kept thy word1 and observed thy covenant1 ,who hath said1 etc444 ,it is the duty of the priestly tribe to prefer ,god's honour and service before all considerations of flesh and blood3 in such manner as to behave as strangers to their nearest akin1 when these would withdraw them from the business of their calling4 #cc3aj4 ,thy judgments1 ,o ,jacob1 and thy law1 ,o ,israel3 they shall put incense in thy wrath and holocaust upon thy altar4 #cc3aa4 ,bless1 ,o ,lord1 his strength1 and receive the works of his hands4 ,strike the backs of his enemies1 and let not them that hate him rise4 #cc3ab4 ,and to ,benjamin he said3 ,the best beloved of the ,lord shall dwell confidently in him3 as in a bride chamber shall he abide all the day long1 and between his shoulders shall be rest4 ,shall dwell1 etc444 ,this seems to allude to the temple being built in the confines of the tribe of ,benjamin4 #cc3ac4 ,to ,joseph also he said3 ,of the blessing of the ,lord be his land1 of the fruits of heaven1 and of the dew1 and of the deep that lieth beneath4 #cc3ad4 ,of the fruits brought forth by the sun and by the moon4 #cc3ae4 ,of the tops of the ancient mountains1 of the fruits ,nazarite among his brethren4 ,the ,nazarite444 ,see the note on ,gen4 #di4bf4 #cc3ag4 ,his beauty as of the firstling of a bullock1 his horns as the horns of a rhinoceros3 with them shall he push the nations even to the ends of the earth4 ,these are the multitudes of ,ephraim and these the thousands of ,manasses4 #cc3ah4 ,and to ,zabulon he said3 ,rejoice1 ,o ,zabulon1 in thy going out2 and ,issachar in thy tabernacles4 #cc3ai4 ,they shall call the people to the mountain3 there shall they sacrifice the victims of justice4 ,who shall suck as milk the abundance of the sea1 and the hidden treasures of the sands4 #cc3bj4 ,and to ,gad he said3 ,blessed be ,gad in his breadth3 he hath rested as a lion1 and hath seized upon the arm and the top of the head4 #cc3ba4 ,and he saw his pre-eminence1 that in his portion the teacher was laid up3 who was with the princes of the people1 and did the justices of the ,lord1 and his judgment with ,israel4 ,he saw1 etc444 ,the pre-eminence of the tribe of ,gad1 to which this alludeth1 was their having the lawgiver ,moses buried in their borders2 though the particular place was not known4 #cc3bb4 ,to ,dan also he said3 ,dan is a young lion1 he shall flow plentifully from ,basan4 #cc3bc4 ,and ,to ,nephtali he said3 ,nephtali shall enjoy abundance1 and shall be full of the blessings of the ,lord3 he shall possess the sea and the south4 ,the sea444 ,the lake of ,genesareth4 #cc3bd4 ,to ,aser also he said3 ,let ,aser be blessed with children1 let him be acceptable to his brethren1 and let him dip his foot in oil4 #cc3be4 ,his shoe shall be iron and brass4 ,as the days of thy youth1 so also shall thy old age be4 #cc3bf4 ,there is no other god like the ,god of the rightest3 he that is mounted upon the heaven is thy helper4 ,by his magnificence the clouds run hither and thither4 #cc3bg4 ,his dwelling is above1 and underneath are the everlasting arms3 he shall cast out the enemy from before thee1 and shall say3 ,be thou spirit of ,god1 succeedeth4 ,but ,moses1 for his special familiarity with ,god1 and for most wonderful miracles1 is commended above all other prophets4 #cd3a4 ,then ,moses went up from the plains of ,moab upon mount ,nebo1 to the top of ,phasga over against ,jericho3 and the ,lord shewed him all the land of ,galaad as far as ,dan4 #cd3b4 ,and all ,nephtali1 and the land of ,ephraim and ,manasses1 and all the land of ,juda unto the furthermost sea1 #cd3c4 ,and the south part1 and the breadth of the plain of ,jericho the city of palm trees as far as ,segor4 #cd3d4 ,and the ,lord said to him3 ,this is the land1 for which ,i swore to ,abraham1 ,isaac1 and ,jacob1 saying3 ,i will give it to thy seed4 ,thou hast seen it with thy eyes1 and shalt not pass over to it4 #cd3e4 ,and ,moses the
