that came with them out of ,egypt1 who were not of the race of ,israel2 who1 by their murmuring1 drew also the children of ,israel to murmur3 this should teach us the danger of associating ourselves with the children of ,egypt1 that is1 with the lovers and admirers of this wicked world4 #aa3e4 ,we remember the fish that we ate in ,egypt free cost3 the cucumbers come into our mind1 and the melons1 and the leeks1 and the onions1 and the garlic4 #aa3f4 ,our soul is dry1 our eyes behold nothing else but manna4 #aa3g4 ,now the manna was like coriander seed1 of the colour of bdellium4 ,bdellium444 ,bdellium1 according to ,pliny1 #a4ba1 c4 #i4 was of the colour of a man's nail1 white and bright4 #aa3h4 ,and the people went about1 and gathering it1 ground it in a mill1 or beat it in a mortar1 and boiled it in a pot1 and made cakes thereof of the taste of bread tempered with oil4 #aa3i4 ,and when the dew fell in the night upon the camp1 the manna also fell with it4 #aa3aj4 ,now ,moses heard the people weeping by their families1 every one at the door of his tent4 ,and the wrath of the ,lord was exceedingly enkindled3 to ,moses also the thing seemed insupportable4 #aa3aa4 ,and he said to the ,lord3 ,why hast thou afflicted thy servant8 ,wherefore do ,i not find favour before thee8 ,and why hast thou laid the weight of all this people upon me8 #aa3ab4 ,have ,i conceived all this multitude1 or begotten them1 that thou shouldst say to me3 ,carry them in thy bosom as the nurse is wont to carry the little infant1 and bear them into the land1 for which thou hast sworn to their fathers8 #aa3ac4 ,whence should ,i have flesh to give to so great a multitude8 ,they weep against me1 saying3 ,give us flesh that we may eat4 #aa3ad4 ,i am not able alone to bear all this people1 because it is too heavy for me4 #aa3ae4 ,but if it seem unto thee otherwise1 ,i beseech thee to kill me1 and let me find grace in thy eyes1 that ,i be not afflicted with so great evils4 #aa3af4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,gather unto me seventy men of the ancients of ,israel1 whom thou knowest to be ancients and masters of the people3 and thou shalt bring them to the door of the tabernacle of the covenant1 and shalt make them stand there with thee1 ,seventy men444 ,this was the first institution of the council or senate1 called the ,sanhedrin1 consisting of seventy or seventy-two senators or counsellors4 #aa3ag4 ,that ,i may come down and speak with thee3 and ,i will take of thy spirit1 and will give to them1 that they may bear with thee the burden of the people1 and thou mayest not be burthened alone4 #aa3ah4 ,and thou shalt say to the people3 ,be ye sanctified3 to morrow you shall eat flesh3 for ,i have heard you say3 ,who will give us flesh to eat8 ,it was well with us in ,egypt4 ,that the ,lord may give you flesh1 and you may eat3 #aa3ai4 ,not for one day1 nor two1 nor five1 nor ten1 no nor for twenty4 #aa3bj4 ,but even for a month of days1 till it come out at your nostrils1 and become loathsome to you1 because you have cast off the ,lord1 who is in the midst of you1 and have wept before him1 saying3 ,why came we out of ,egypt8 #aa3ba4 ,and ,moses said3 ,there are six hundred thousand footmen of this people1 and sayest thou3 ,i will give them flesh to eat a whole month8 #aa3bb4 ,shall then a multitude of sheep and oxen be killed1 that it may suffice for their food8 or shall the fishes of the sea be gathered together to fill them8 #aa3bc4 ,and the ,lord answered him3 ,is the hand of the ,lord unable8 ,thou shalt presently see whether my word shall come to pass or no4 #aa3bd4 ,moses therefore came1 and told the people the words of the ,lord1 and assembled seventy men of the ancients of ,israel1 and made them to stand about the tabernacle4 #aa3be4 ,and the ,lord came down in a cloud1 and spoke to him1 taking away of the spirit that was in ,moses1 and giving to the seventy men4 ,and when the spirit had rested on them they prophesied1 nor did they cease afterwards4 #aa3bf4 ,now there remained in the camp two of the men1 of whom one was called ,eldad1 and the other ,medad1 upon whom the spirit rested2 for they also had been enrolled1 but were not gone forth to the tabernacle4 #aa3bg4 ,and when they prophesied in the camp1 there ran a young man1 and told ,moses1 saying3 ,eldad and ,medad prophesy in the camp4 #aa3bh4 ,forthwith ,josue the son of ,nun1 the minister of ,moses1 and chosen out of many1 said3 ,my lord ,moses forbid them4 #aa3bi4 ,but he said3 ,why hast thou emulation for me8 ,o that all the people might prophesy1 and that the ,lord would give them his spirit6 #aa3cj4 ,and ,moses returned1 with the ancients of ,israel1 into the camp4 #aa3ca4 ,and a wind going out from the ,lord1 taking quails up beyond the sea brought them1 and cast them into the camp for the space of one day's journey1 on every side of the camp round about1 and they flew in the air two cubits high above the ground4 #aa3cb4 ,the people therefore rising up all that day1 and night1 and the next day1 gathered together of quails1 he that did least1 ten cores3 and they dried them round about the camp4 #aa3cc4 ,as yet the flesh was between their teeth1 neither had that kind of meat failed3 when behold the wrath of the ,lord being provoked against the people1 struck them with an exceeding great plague4 #aa3cd4 ,and that place was called1 ,the graves of lust3 for there they buried the people that had lusted4 ,and departing from the graves of lust1 they came unto ,haseroth1 and abode there4 ,the graves of lust444 ,or1 the sepulchres of concupiscence3 so called from their irregular desire of flesh4 ,in ,hebrew1 ,kibroth4 ,hattaavah4 ,numbers ,chapter #ab ,mary and ,aaron murmur against ,moses1 whom ,god praiseth above other prophets4 ,mary being struck with leprosy1 ,aaron confesseth his fault4 ,moses prayeth for her1 and after seven days' separation from the camp1 she is restored4 #ab3a4 ,and ,mary and ,aaron spoke against ,moses1 because of his wife the ,ethiopian1 ,ethiopian444 ,sephora the wife of ,moses was of ,madian1 which bordered upon the land of ,chus or ,ethiopia3 where note1 that the ,ethiopia here spoken of is not that of ,africa but that of ,arabia4 #ab3b4 ,and they said3 ,hath the ,lord spoken by ,moses only8 ,hath he not also spoken to us in like manner8 ,and when the ,lord heard this1 #ab3c4 7,for ,moses was a man exceeding meek above all men that dwelt upon earth7 ,exceeding meek444 ,moses being the meekest of men1 would not contend for himself2 therefore1 ,god inspired him to write here his own defence3 and the ,holy ,spirit1 whose dictate he wrote1 obliged him to declare the truth1 though it was so much to his own praise4 #ab3d4 ,immediately he spoke to him1 and to ,aaron and ,mary3 ,come out you three only to the tabernacle of the covenant4 ,and when they were come out1 #ab3e4 ,the ,lord came down in a pillar of the cloud1 and stood in the entry of the tabernacle calling to ,aaron and ,mary4 ,and when they were come1 #ab3f4 ,he said to them3 ,hear my words3 if there be among you a prophet of the ,lord1 ,i will appear to him in a vision1 or ,i will speak to him in a dream4 #ab3g4 ,but it is not so with my servant ,moses who is most faithful in all my house3 #ab3h4 ,for ,i speak to him mouth to mouth3 and plainly1 and not by riddles and figures doth he see the ,lord4 ,why then were you not afraid to speak ill of my servant ,moses8 #ab3i4 ,and being angry with them he went away3 #ab3aj4 ,the cloud also that was over the tabernacle departed3 and behold ,mary appeared white as snow with a leprosy4 ,and when ,aaron had looked on her1 and saw her all covered with leprosy1 #ab3aa4 ,he said to ,moses3 ,i beseech thee1 my lord1 lay not upon us this sin1 which we have foolishly committed3 #ab3ab4 ,let her not be as one dead1 and as an abortive that is cast forth from the mother's womb4 ,lo1 now one half of her flesh is consumed with the leprosy4 #ab3ac4 ,and ,moses cried to the ,lord1 saying ,o ,god1 ,i beseech thee heal her4 #ab3ad4 ,and the ,lord answered him3 ,if her father had spitten upon her face1 ought she not to have been ashamed for seven days at least8 ,let her be separated seven days without the camp1 and afterwards she shall be called again4 #ab3ae4 ,mary therefore was put out of the camp seven days3 and the people moved not from that place until ,mary was called again4 ,numbers ,chapter #ac ,the twelve spies are sent to view the land4 ,the relation they make of it4 #ac3a4 ,and the people marched from ,haseroth1 and pitched their tents in the desert of ,pharan4 #ac3b4 ,and there the ,lord spoke to ,moses1 saying4 #ac3c4 ,send men to view the land of ,chanaan1 which ,i will give to the children of ,israel1 one of every tribe1 of the rulers4 #ac3d4 ,moses did what the ,lord had commanded1 sending from the desert of ,pharan1 principal men1 whose names are these3 #ac3e4 ,of the tribe of ,ruben1 ,sammua the son of ,zechur4 #ac3f4 ,of the tribe of ,simeon1 ,saphat the son of ,huri4 #ac3g4 ,of the tribe of ,juda1 ,caleb the son of ,jephone4 #ac3h4 ,of the tribe of ,issachar1 ,igal the son of ,joseph4 #ac3i4 ,of the tribe of ,ephraim1 ,osee the son of ,nun4 #ac3aj4 ,of the tribe of ,benjamin1 ,phalti the son of ,raphu4 #ac3aa4 ,of the tribe of ,zabulon1 ,geddiel the son of ,sodi4 #ac3ab4 ,of the tribe of ,joseph1 of the sceptre of ,manasses1 ,gaddi the son of ,susi4 #ac3ac4 ,of the tribe of ,dan1 ,ammiel the son of ,gemalli4 #ac3ad4 ,of the tribe of ,aser1 ,sthur the son of ,michael4 #ac3ae4 ,of the tribe of ,nephtali1 ,nahabi the son of ,vapsi4 #ac3af4 ,of the tribe of ,gad1 ,guel the son of ,machi4 #ac3ag4 ,these are the names of the men1 whom ,moses sent to view the land3 and he called ,osee the son of ,nun1 ,josue4 #ac3ah4 ,and ,moses sent them to view the land of ,chanaan1 and said to them3 ,go you up by the south side4 ,and when you shall come to the mountains1 #ac3ai4 ,view the land1 of what sort it is1 and the people that are the inhabitants thereof1 whether they be strong or weak3 few in number or many3 #ac3bj4 ,the land itself1 whether it be good or bad3 what manner of cities1 walled or without walls3 #ac3ba4 ,the ground1 fat or barren1 woody or without trees4 ,be of good courage1 and bring us of the fruits of the land4 ,now it was the time when the firstripe grapes are fit to be eaten4 #ac3bb4 ,and when they were gone up1 they viewed the land from the desert of ,sin1 unto ,rohob as you enter into ,emath4 #ac3bc4 ,and they went up at the south side1 and came to ,hebron1 where were ,achiman and ,sisai and ,tholmai the sons of ,enac4 ,for ,hebron was built seven years before ,tanis the city of ,egypt4 #ac3bd4 ,and forward as far as the torrent of the cluster of grapes1 they cut off a branch with its cluster of grapes1 which two men carried upon a lever4 ,they took also of the pomegranates and of the figs of that place3 #ac3be4 ,which was called ,nehelescol1 that is to say1 the torrent of the cluster of grapes1 because from thence the children of ,israel had carried a cluster of grapes4 #ac3bf4 ,and they that went to spy out the land returned after forty days1 having gone round all the country1 #ac3bg4 ,and came to ,moses and ,aaron and to all the assembly of the children of ,israel to the desert of ,pharan1 which is in ,cades4 ,and speaking to them and to all the multitude1 they shewed them the fruits of the land3 #ac3bh4 ,and they related and said3 ,we came into the land to which thou sentest us1 which in very deed floweth with milk and honey as may be known by these fruits3 #ac3bi4 ,but it hath very strong inhabitants1 and the cities are great and walled4 ,we saw there the race of ,enac4 #ac3cj4 ,amalec dwelleth in the south1 the ,hethite and the ,jebusite and the ,amorrhite in the mountains3 but the ,chanaanite abideth by the sea and near the streams of the ,jordan4 #ac3ca4 ,in the mean time ,caleb1 to still the murmuring of the people that rose against ,moses1 said3 ,let us go up and possess the land1 for we shall be able to conquer it4 #ac3cb4 ,but the others1 that had been with him1 said3 ,no1 we are not able to go up to this people1 because they are stronger than we4 #ac3cc4 ,and they spoke ill of the land1 which they had viewed1 before the children of ,israel1 saying3 ,the land which we have viewed1 devoureth its inhabitants3 the people1 that we beheld are of a tall stature4 ,spoke ill1 etc444 ,these men1 who by their misrepresentations of the land of promise1 discouraged the ,israelites from attempting the conquest of it1 were a figure of worldlings1 who1 by decrying or misrepresenting true devotion1 discourage ,christians from seeking in earnest and acquiring so great a good1 and thereby securing to themselves a happy eternity4 #ac3cd4 ,there we saw certain monsters of the sons of ,enac1 of the giant kind3 in comparison of whom1 we seemed like locusts4 ,numbers ,chapter #ad ,the people murmur4 ,god threateneth to destroy them4 ,he is appeased by ,moses1 yet so as to exclude the murmurers from entering the promised land4 ,the authors of the sedition are struck dead4 ,the rest going to fight against the will of ,god are beaten4 #ad3a4 ,therefore the whole multitude crying wept that night4 #ad3b4 ,and all the children of ,israel murmured against ,moses and ,aaron1 saying3 #ad3c4 ,would ,god that we had died in ,egypt3 and would ,god we may die in this vast wilderness1 and that the ,lord may not bring us into this land1 lest we fall by the sword1 and our wives and children be led away captives4 ,is it not better to return into ,egypt8 #ad3d4 ,and they said one to another3 ,let us appoint a captain1 and let us return into ,egypt4 #ad3e4 ,and when ,moses and ,aaron heard this1 they fell down flat upon the ground before the multitude of the children of ,israel4 #ad3f4 ,but ,josue the son of ,nun1 and ,caleb the son of ,jephone1 who themselves also had viewed the land1 rent their garments1 #ad3g4 ,and said to all the multitude of the children of ,israel3 ,the land which we have gone round is very good3 #ad3h4 ,if the ,lord be favourable1 he will bring us into it1 and give us a land flowing with milk and honey4 #ad3i4 ,be not rebellious against the ,lord3 and fear ye not the people of this land1 for we are able to eat them up as bread4 ,all aid is gone from them3 the ,lord is with us1 fear ye not4 #ad3aj4 ,and when all the multitude cried out1 and would have stoned them1 the glory of the ,lord appeared over the tabernacle of the covenant to all the children of ,israel4 #ad3aa4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,how long will this people detract me8 how long will they not believe me for all the signs that ,i have wrought before them8 #ad3ab4 ,i will strike them therefore with pestilence1 and will consume them3 but thee ,i will make a ruler over a great nation1 and a mightier than this is4 #ad3ac4 ,and ,moses said to the ,lord3 ,that the ,egyptians1 from the midst of whom thou hast brought forth this people1 #ad3ad4 ,and the inhabitants of this land1 7who have heard that thou1 ,o ,lord1 art among this people1 and art seen face to face1 and thy cloud protecteth them1 and thou goest before them in a pillar of a cloud by day1 and in a pillar of fire by night17 #ad3ae4 ,may hear that thou hast killed so great a multitude as it were one man and may say3 #ad3af4 ,he could not bring the people into the land for which he had sworn1 therefore did he kill them in the wilderness4 #ad3ag4 ,let then the strength of the ,lord be magnified1 as thou hast sworn1 saying3 #ad3ah4 ,the ,lord is patient and full of mercy1 by taking away iniquity and wickedness1 and leaving no man clear1 who visitest the sins of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation4 ,clear444 i4 e41 who deserves punishment4 #ad3ai4 ,forgive1 ,i beseech thee1 the sins of this people1 according to the greatness of thy mercy1 as thou hast been merciful to them from their going out of ,egypt unto this place4 #ad3bj4 ,and the ,lord said3 ,i have forgiven according to thy word4 #ad3ba4 ,as ,i live3 and the whole earth shall be filled with the glory of the ,lord4 #ad3bb4 ,but yet all the men that have seen my majesty1 and the signs that ,i have done in ,egypt1 and in the wilderness1 and have tempted me now ten times1 and have not obeyed my voice1 #ad3bc4 ,shall not see the land for which ,i swore to their fathers1 neither shall any one of them that hath detracted me behold it4 #ad3bd4 ,my servant ,caleb1 who being full of another spirit hath followed me1 ,i will bring into this land which he hath gone round3 and his seed shall possess it4 #ad3be4 ,for the ,amalecite and the ,chanaanite dwell in the valleys4 ,to morrow remove the camp1 and return into the wilderness by the way of the ,red ,sea4 #ad3bf4 ,and the ,lord spoke to ,moses and ,aaron1 saying3 #ad3bg4 ,how long doth this wicked multitude murmur against me8 ,i have heard the murmurings of the children of ,israel4 #ad3bh4 ,say therefore to them3 ,as ,i live1 saith the ,lord3 ,according as you have spoken in my hearing1 so will ,i do to you4 #ad3bi4 ,in the wilderness shall your carcasses lie4 ,all you that were numbered from twenty years old and upward1 and have murmured against me1 #ad3cj4 ,shall not enter into the land1 over which ,i lifted up my hand to make you dwell therein1 except ,caleb the son of ,jephone1 and ,josue the son of ,nun4 #ad3ca4 ,but your children1 of whom you said1 that they should be a prey to the enemies1 will ,i bring in3 that they may see the land which you have despised4 #ad3cb4 ,your carcasses shall lie in the wilderness4 #ad3cc4 ,your children shall wander in the desert forty years1 and shall bear your fornication1 until the carcasses of their fathers be consumed in the desert1 ,shall bear your fornication444 ,that is1 shall bear the punishment of your disloyalty to ,god1 which in the scripture language is here called a fornication1 in a spiritual sense4 #ad3cd4 ,according to the number of the forty days1 wherein you viewed the land3 a year shall be counted for a day4 ,and forty years you shall receive your iniquities1 and shall know my revenge3 #ad3ce4 ,for as ,i have spoken1 so will ,i do to all this wicked multitude1 that hath risen up together against me3 in this wilderness shall it faint away and die4 #ad3cf4 ,therefore all the men1 whom ,moses had sent to view the land1 and who at their return had made the whole multitude to murmur against him1 speaking ill of the land that it was naught1 #ad3cg4 ,died and were struck in the sight of the ,lord4 #ad3ch4 ,but ,josue the son of ,nun1 and ,caleb had gone to view the land4 #ad3ci4 ,and ,moses spoke all these words to all the children of ,israel1 and the people mourned exceedingly4 #ad3dj4 ,and behold rising up very early in the morning1 they went up to the top of the mountain1 and said3 ,we are ready to go up to the place1 of which the ,lord hath spoken3 for we have sinned4 #ad3da4 ,and ,moses said to them3 ,why transgress you the word of the ,lord1 which shall not succeed prosperously with you8 #ad3db4 ,go not up1 for the ,lord is not with you3 lest you fall before your enemies4 #ad3dc4 ,the ,amalecite and the ,chanaanite are before you1 and by their sword you shall fall1 because you would not consent to the ,lord1 neither will the ,lord be with you4 #ad3dd4 ,but they being blinded went up to the top of the mountain4 ,but the ark of the testament of the ,lord and ,moses departed not from the camp4 #ad3de4 ,and the ,amalecite came down1 and the ,chanaanite that dwelt in the mountain3 and smiting and slaying them pursued them as far as ,horma4 ,numbers ,chapter #ae ,certain laws concerning sacrifices4 ,sabbath breaking is punished with death4 ,the law of fringes on their garments4 #ae3a4 ,and the ,lord spoke to ,moses1 saying3 #ae3b4 ,speak to the children of ,israel and thou shalt say to them3 ,when you shall be come unto the land of your habitation1 which ,i will give you1 #ae3c4 ,and shall make an offering to the ,lord1 for a holocaust1 or a victim1 paying your vows1 or voluntarily offering gifts1 or in your solemnities burning a sweet savour unto the ,lord1 of oxen or of sheep3 #ae3d4 ,whosoever immolateth the victim1 shall offer a sacrifice of fine flour1 the tenth part of an ephi1 tempered with the fourth part of a hin of oil3 #ae3e4 ,and he shall give the same measure of wine to pour out in libations for the holocaust or for the victim4 ,for every lamb1 #ae3f4 ,and for every ram there shall be a sacrifice of flour of two tenths1 which shall be tempered with the third part of a hin of oil3 #ae3g4 ,and he shall offer the third part the same measure of wine for the libation1 for a sweet savour to the ,lord4 #ae3h4 ,but when thou offerest a holocaust or sacrifice of oxen1 to fulfil thy vow or for victims of peace offerings1 #ae3i4 ,thou shalt give for every ox three tenths of flour tempered with half a hin of oil1 #ae3aj4 ,and wine for libations of the same measure1 for an offering of most sweet savour to the ,lord4 #ae3aa4 ,thus shalt thou do #ae3ab4 ,for every ox and ram and lamb and kid4 #ae3ac4 ,both they that are born in the land1 and the strangers #ae3ad4 ,shall offer sacrifices after the same rite4 #ae3ae4 ,there shall be all one law and judgment both for you and for them who are strangers in the land4 #ae3af4 ,and the ,lord spoke to ,moses1 saying3 #ae3ag4 ,speak to the children of ,israel1 and thou shalt say to them3 #ae3ah4 ,when you are come into the land which ,i will give you1 #ae3ai4 ,and shall eat of the bread of that country1 you shall separate firstfruits to the ,lord1 #ae3bj4 ,of the things you eat4 ,as you separate firstfruits of your barnfloors3 #ae3ba4 ,so also shall you give firstfruits of your dough to the ,lord4 #ae3bb4 ,and if through ignorance you omit any of these things1 which the ,lord hath spoken to ,moses1 #ae3bc4 ,and by him hath commanded you from the day that he began to command and thenceforward1 #ae3bd4 ,and the multitude have forgotten to do it3 they shall offer a calf out of the herd1 a holocaust for a most sweet savour to the ,lord1 and the sacrifice and libations thereof1 as the ceremonies require1 and a buck goat for sin3 #ae3be4 ,and the priest shall pray for all the multitude of the children of ,israel3 and it shall be forgiven them1 because they sinned ignorantly1 offering notwithstanding a burnt offering to the ,lord for themselves and for their sin and their ,ignorance3 #ae3bf4 ,and it shall be forgiven all the people of the children of ,israel3 and the strangers that sojourn among them3 because it is the fault of all the people through ignorance4 #ae3bg4 ,but if one soul shall sin ignorantly1 he shall offer a she goat of a year old for his sin4 #ae3bh4 ,and the priest shall pray for him1 because he sinned ignorantly before the ,lord3 and he shall obtain his pardon1 and it shall be forgiven him4 #ae3bi4 ,the same law shall be for all that sin by ignorance1 whether they be natives or strangers4 #ae3cj4 ,but the soul that committeth any thing through pride1 whether he be born in the land or a stranger 7because he hath been rebellious against the ,lord7 shall be cut off from among his people3 #ae3ca4 ,for he hath contemned the word of the ,lord1 and made void his precept3 therefore shall he be destroyed1 and shall bear his iniquity4 #ae3cb4 ,and it came to pass1 when the children of ,israel were in the wilderness1 and had found a man gathering sticks on the sabbath day1 #ae3cc4 ,that they brought him to ,moses and ,aaron and the whole multitude4 #ae3cd4 ,and they put him into prison1 not knowing what they should do with him4 #ae3ce4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,let that man die1 let all the multitude stone him without the camp4 #ae3cf4 ,and when they had brought him out1 they stoned him1 and he died as the ,lord had commanded4 #ae3cg4 ,the ,lord also said to ,moses3 #ae3ch4 ,speak to the children of ,israel1 and thou shalt tell them to make to themselves fringes in the corners of their garments1 putting in them ribands of blue3 ,fringes444 ,the ,pharisees enlarged these fringes through hypocrisy1 ,matt4 #bc4e1 to appear more zealous than other men for the law of ,god4 #ae3ci4 ,that when they shall see them1 they may remember all the commandments of the ,lord1 and not follow their own thoughts and eyes going astray after divers things1 #ae3dj4 ,but rather being mindful of the precepts of the ,lord1 may do them and be holy to their ,god4 #ae3da4 ,i am the ,lord your ,god1 who brought you out of the land of ,egypt1 that ,i might be your ,god4 ,numbers ,chapter #af ,the schism of ,core and his adherents3 their punishment4 #af3a4 ,and behold ,core the son of ,isaar1 the son of ,caath1 the son of ,levi1 and ,dathan and ,abiron the sons of ,eliab1 and ,hon the son of ,pheleth of the children of ,ruben1 #af3b4 ,rose up against ,moses1 and with them two hundred and fifty others of the children of ,israel1 leading men of the synagogue1 and who in the time of assembly were called by name4 ,rose up444 ,the crime of these men1 which was punished in so remarkable a manner1 was that of schism1 and of rebellion against the authority established by ,god in the church2 and their pretending to the priesthood without being lawfully called and sent3 the same is the case of all modern sectaries4 #af3c4 ,and when they had stood up against ,moses and ,aaron1 they said3 ,let it be enough for you1 that all the multitude consisteth of holy ones1 and the ,lord is among them3 ,why lift you up yourselves above the people of the ,lord8 #af3d4 ,when ,moses heard this1 he fell flat on his face3 #af3e4 ,and speaking to ,core and all the multitude1 he said3 ,in the morning the ,lord will make known who belong to him1 and the holy he will join to himself3 and whom he shall choose1 they shall approach to him4 #af3f4 ,do this therefore3 ,take every man of you your censers1 thou ,core1 and all thy company4 #af3g4 ,and putting fire in them to morrow1 put incense upon it before the ,lord3 and whomsoever he shall choose1 the same shall be holy3 you take too much upon you1 ye sons of ,levi4 #af3h4 ,and he said again to ,core3 ,hear ye sons of ,levi4 #af3i4 ,is it a small thing unto you1 that the ,god of ,israel hath spared you from all the people1 and joined you to himself1 that you should serve him in the service of the tabernacle1 and should stand before the congregation of the people1 and should minister to him8 #af3aj4 ,did he therefore make thee and all thy brethren the sons of ,levi to approach unto him1 that you should challenge to yourselves the priesthood also1 #af3aa4 ,and that all thy company should stand against the ,lord8 for what is ,aaron that you murmur against him8 #af3ab4 ,then ,moses sent to call ,dathan and ,abiron the sons of ,eliab4 ,but they answered3 ,we will not come4 #af3ac4 ,is it a small matter to thee1 that thou hast brought us out of a land that flowed with milk and honey1 to kill us in the desert1 except thou rule also like a lord over us8 #af3ad4 ,thou hast brought us indeed into a land that floweth with rivers of milk and honey1 and hast given us possessions of fields and vineyards2 wilt thou also pull out our eyes8 ,we will not come4 #af3ae4 ,moses therefore being very angry1 said to the ,lord3 ,respect not their sacrifices3 thou knowest that ,i have not taken of them so much as a young ass at any time1 nor have injured any of them4 ,very angry444 ,this anger was a zeal against sin2 and an indignation at the affront offered to ,god2 like that which the same holy prophet conceived upon the sight of the golden calf1 ,ex4 #cb4ai4 #af3af4 ,and he said to ,core3 ,do thou and thy congregation stand apart before the ,lord to morrow1 and ,aaron apart4 #af3ag4 ,take every one of you censers1 and put incense upon them1 offering to the ,lord two hundred and fifty censers3 let ,aaron also hold his censer4 #af3ah4 ,when they had done this1 ,moses and ,aaron standing1 #af3ai4 ,and had drawn up all the multitude against them to the door of the tabernacle1 the glory of the ,lord appeared to them all4 #af3bj4 ,and the ,lord speaking to ,moses and ,aaron1 said3 #af3ba4 ,separate yourselves from among this congregation1 that ,i may presently destroy them4 #af3bb4 ,they fell flat on their face1 and said3 ,o most mighty1 the ,god of the spirits of all flesh1 for one man's sin shall thy wrath rage against all8 #af3bc4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 #af3bd4 ,command the whole people to separate themselves from the tents of ,core and ,dathan and ,abiron4 #af3be4 ,and ,moses arose1 and went to ,dathan and ,abiron3 and the ancients of ,israel following him1 #af3bf4 ,he said to the multitude3 ,depart from the tents of these wicked men1 and touch nothing of theirs1 lest you be involved in their sins4 #af3bg4 ,and when they were departed from their tents round about1 ,dathan and ,abiron coming out stood in the entry of their pavilions with their wives and children1 and all the people4 #af3bh4 ,and ,moses said3 ,by this you shall know that the ,lord hath sent me to do all things that you see1 and that ,i have not forged them of my own head3 #af3bi4 ,if these men die the common death of men1 and if they be visited with a plague1 wherewith others also are wont to be visited1 the ,lord did not send me4 #af3cj4 ,but if the ,lord do a new thing1 and the earth opening her mouth swallow them down1 and all things that belong to them1 and they go down alive into hell1 you shall know that they have blasphemed the ,lord4 #af3ca4 ,and immediately as he had made an end of speaking1 the earth broke asunder under their feet3 #af3cb4 ,and opening her mouth1 devoured them with their tents and all their substance4 #af3cc4 ,and they went down alive into hell1 the ground closing upon them1 and they perished from among the people4 #af3cd4 ,but all ,israel1 that was standing round about1 fled at the cry of them that were perishing3 saying3 ,lest perhaps the earth swallow us up also4 #af3ce4 ,and a fire coming out from the ,lord1 destroyed the two hundred and fifty men that offered the incense4 #af3cf4 ,and the ,lord spoke to ,moses1 saying3 #af3cg4 ,command ,eleazar the son of ,aaron the priest to take up the censers that lie in the burning1 and to scatter the fire of one side and the other3 because they are sanctified #af3ch4 ,in the deaths of the sinners3 and let him beat them into plates1 and fasten them to the altar1 because incense hath been offered in them to the ,lord1 and they are sanctified1 that the children of ,israel may see them for a sign and a memorial4 #af3ci4 ,then ,eleazar the priest took the brazen censers1 wherein they had offered1 whom the burning fire had devoured1 and beat them into plates1 fastening them to the altar3 #af3dj4 ,that the children of ,israel might have for the time to come wherewith they should be admonished1 that no stranger or any one that is not of the seed of ,aaron should come near to offer incense to the ,lord1 lest he should suffer as ,core suffered1 and all his congregation1 according as the ,lord spoke to ,moses4 #af3da4 ,the following day all the multitude of the children of ,israel murmured against ,moses and ,aaron1 saying3 ,you have killed the people of the ,lord4 #af3db4 ,and when there arose a sedition1 and the tumult increased1 #af3dc4 ,moses and ,aaron fled to the tabernacle of the covenant4 ,and when they were gone into it1 the cloud covered it1 and the glory of the ,lord appeared4 #af3dd4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 #af3de4 ,get you out from the midst of this multitude1 this moment will ,i destroy them4 ,and as they were lying on the ground1 #af3df4 ,moses said to ,aaron3 ,take the censer1 and putting fire in it from the altar1 put incense upon it1 and go quickly to the people to pray for them3 for already wrath is gone out from the ,lord1 and the plague rageth4 #af3dg4 ,when ,aaron had done this1 and had run to the midst of the multitude which the burning fire was now destroying1 he offered the incense3 #af3dh4 ,and standing between the dead and the living1 he prayed for the people1 and the plague ceased4 #af3di4 ,and the number of them that were slain was fourteen thousand and seven hundred men1 besides them that had perished in the sedition of ,core4 #af3ej4 ,and ,aaron returned to ,moses to the door of the tabernacle of the covenant after the destruction was over4 ,numbers ,chapter #ag ,the priesthood is confirmed to ,aaron by the miracle of the blooming of his rod1 which is kept for a monument in the tabernacle4 #ag3a4 ,and the ,lord spoke to ,moses1 saying3 #ag3b4 ,speak to the children of ,israel1 and take of every one of them a rod by their kindreds1 of all the princes of the tribes1 twelve rods1 and write the name of every man upon his rod4 #ag3c4 ,and the name of ,aaron shall be for the tribe of ,levi1 and one rod shall contain all their families3 #ag3d4 ,and thou shalt lay them up in the tabernacle of the covenant before the testimony1 where ,i will speak to thee4 #ag3e4 ,whomsoever of these ,i shall choose1 his rod shall blossom3 and ,i will make to cease from me the murmurings of the children of ,israel1 wherewith they murmur against you4 #ag3f4 ,and ,moses spoke to the children of ,israel3 and all the princes gave him rods one for every tribe3 and there were twelve rods besides the rod of ,aaron4 #ag3g4 ,and when ,moses had ,laid them up before the ,lord in the tabernacle of the testimony3 #ag3h4 ,he returned on the following day1 and found that the rod of ,aaron for the house of ,levi1 was budded3 and that the buds swelling it hid bloomed blossoms1 which spreading the leaves1 were formed into almonds4 ,the rod of ,aaron for the house of ,levi1 was budded1 etc444 ,this rod of ,aaron which thus miraculously brought forth fruit1 was a figure of the blessed ,virgin conceiving and bringing forth her ,son without any prejudice to her virginity4 #ag3i4 ,moses therefore brought out all the rods from before the ,lord to all the children of ,israel3 and they saw1 and every one received their rods4 #ag3aj4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,carry back the rod of ,aaron into the tabernacle of the testimony1 that it may be kept there for a token of the rebellious children of ,israel1 and that their complaints may cease from me lest they die4 #ag3aa4 ,and ,moses did as the ,lord had commanded4 #ag3ab4 ,and the children of ,israel said to and thy sons with thee shall bear the sins of your priesthood4 ,thou1 and thy father's house with thee1 shall bear the iniquity of the sanctuary444 ,that is1 you shall be punished if1 through negligence or want of due attention1 you err in the discharge of the sacred functions for which you were ordained4 #ah3b4 ,and take with thee thy brethren also of the tribe of ,levi1 and the sceptre of thy father1 and let them be ready in hand1 and minister to thee3 but thou and thy sons shall minister in the tabernacle of the testimony4 #ah3c4 ,and the ,levites shall watch to do thy commands1 and about all the works of the tabernacle3 only they shall not come nigh the vessels of the sanctuary nor the altar1 lest both they die1 and you also perish with them4 #ah3d4 ,but let them be with thee1 and watch in the charge of the tabernacle1 and in all the ceremonies thereof4 ,a stranger shall not join himself with you4 #ah3e4 ,watch ye in the charge of the sanctuary1 and in the ministry of the altar3 lest indignation rise upon the children of ,israel4 #ah3f4 ,i have given you your brethren the ,levites from among the children of ,israel1 and have delivered them for a gift to the ,lord1 to serve in the ministries of the tabernacle4 #ah3g4 ,but thou and thy sons look ye to the priesthood3 and all things that pertain to the service of the altar1 and that are within the veil1 shall be executed by the priests4 ,if any stranger shall approach1 he shall be slain4 #ah3h4 ,and the ,lord said to ,aaron3 ,behold ,i have given thee the charge of my firstfruits4 ,all things that are sanctified by the children of ,israel1 ,i have delivered to thee and to thy sons for the priestly office1 by everlasting ordinances4 #ah3i4 ,these therefore shalt thou take of the things that are sanctified1 and are offered to the ,lord4 ,every offering1 and sacrifice1 and whatsoever is rendered to me for sin and for trespass1 and becometh holy of holies1 shall be for thee and thy sons4 #ah3aj4 ,thou shalt eat it in the sanctuary3 the males only shall eat thereof1 because it is a consecrated thing to thee4 #ah3aa4 ,but the firstfruits1 which the children of ,israel shall vow and offer1 ,i have given to thee1 and to thy sons1 and to thy daughters1 by a perpetual law4 ,he that is clean in thy house1 shall eat them4 #ah3ab4 ,all the best of the oil1 and of the wine1 and of the corn1 whatsoever firstfruits they offer to the ,lord1 ,i have given them to thee4 #ah3ac4 ,all the firstripe of the fruits1 that the ground bringeth forth1 and which are brought to the ,lord1 shall be for thy use3 he that is clean in thy house1 shall eat them4 #ah3ad4 ,every thing that the children of ,israel shall give by vow1 shall be thine4 #ah3ae4 ,whatsoever is firstborn of all flesh1 which they offer to the ,lord1 whether it be of men1 or of beasts1 shall belong to thee3 only for the firstborn of man thou shalt take a price1 and every beast that is unclean thou shalt cause to be redeemed1 #ah3af4 ,and the redemption of it shall be after one month1 for five sicles of silver1 by the weight of the sanctuary4 ,a sicle hath twenty obols4 #ah3ag4 ,but the firstling of a cow1 and of a sheep and of a goat thou shalt not cause to be redeemed1 because they are sanctified to the ,lord4 ,their blood only thou shalt pour upon the altar1 and their fat thou shalt burn for a most sweet odour to the ,lord4 #ah3ah4 ,but the flesh shall fall to thy use1 as the consecrated breast1 and the right shoulder shall be thine4 #ah3ai4 ,all the firstfruits of the sanctuary which the children of ,israel offer to the ,lord1 ,i have given to thee and to thy sons and daughters1 by a perpetual ordinance4 ,it is a covenant of salt for ever before the ,lord1 to thee and to thy sons4 ,a covenant of salt444 ,it is a proverbial expression1 signifying a covenant not to be altered or corrupted2 as salt is used to keep things from corruption2 a covenant perpetual1 like that by which it was appointed1 that salt should be used in every sacrifice4 ,lev4 #b4 #ah3bj4 ,and the ,lord said to ,aaron3 ,you shall possess nothing in their land1 neither shall you have a portion among them3 ,i am thy portion and inheritance in the midst of the children of ,israel4 #ah3ba4 ,and ,i have given to the sons of ,levi all the tithes of ,israel for a possession1 for the ministry wherewith they serve me in the tabernacle of the covenant3 #ah3bb4 ,that the children of ,israel may not approach any more to the tabernacle1 nor commit deadly sin1 ,deadly sin444 ,that is1 sin which will bring death after it4 #ah3bc4 ,but only the sons of ,levi may serve me in the tabernacle1 and bear the sins of the people4 ,it shall be an everlasting ordinance in your generations4 ,they shall not possess any other thing1 #ah3bd4 ,but be content with the oblation or tithes1 which ,i have separated for their uses and necessities4 #ah3be4 ,and the ,lord spoke to ,moses1 saying3 #ah3bf4 ,command the ,levites1 and declare unto them3 ,when you shall receive of the children of ,israel the tithes1 which ,i have given you1 offer the firstfruits of them to the ,lord1 that is to say1 the tenth part of the tenth3 #ah3bg4 ,lord1 and give them to ,aaron the priest4 #ah3bi4 ,all the things that you shall offer of the tithes1 and shall separate for the gifts of the ,lord1 shall be the best and choicest things4 #ah3cj4 ,and thou shalt say to them3 ,if you offer all the goodly and the better things of the tithes1 it shall be reckoned to you as if you had given the firstfruits of the barnfloor and the winepress3 #ah3ca4 ,and you shall eat them in all your places1 both you and your families3 because it is your reward for the ministry1 wherewith you serve in the tabernacle of the testimony4 #ah3cb4 ,and you shall not sin in this point1 by reserving the choicest and fat things to yourselves1 lest you profane the oblations of the children of ,israel1 and die4 ,numbers ,chapter #ai ,the law of the sacrifice consumed with fire without the camp1 with the ashes of which1 mingled with water1 the unclean were to be expiated and purified2 was a figure of the passion of ,christ1 by whose precious blood applied to our souls in the holy sacraments1 we are cleansed from our sins4 #ai3c4 ,and you shall deliver her to ,eleazar the priest1 who shall bring her forth without the camp1 and shall immolate her in the sight of all3 #ai3d4 ,and dipping his finger in her blood1 shall sprinkle it over against the door of the tabernacle seven times1 #ai3e4 ,and shall burn her in the sight of all delivering up to the fire her skin1 and her flesh1 and her blood1 and her dung4 #ai3f4 ,the priest shall also take cedar wood1 and hyssop1 and scarlet twice dyed1 and cast it into the flame1 with which the cow is garments1 he shall be unclean until the evening4 ,the children of ,israel1 and the strangers that dwell among them1 shall observe this for a holy thing by a perpetual ordinance4 #ai3aa4 ,he that toucheth the corpse of a man1 and is therefore unclean seven days1 #ai3ab4 ,shall be sprinkled with this water on the third day1 and on the seventh1 and so shall be cleansed4 ,if he were not sprinkled on the third day1 he cannot be cleansed on the seventh4 #ai3ac4 ,every one that toucheth the corpse of a man1 and is not sprinkled with this mixture1 shall profane the tabernacle of the ,lord1 and shall perish out of ,israel3 because he was not sprinkled with the water of expiation1 he shall be unclean1 and his uncleanness shall remain upon him4 #ai3ad4 ,this is the law of a man that dieth in a tent3 ,all that go into his tent and all the vessels that are there1 shall be unclean seven days4 #ai3ae4 ,the vessel that hath no cover1 nor binding over it1 shall be unclean4 #ai3af4 ,if any man in the field touch the corpse of a man that was slain1 or that died of himself1 or his bone1 or his grave1 he shall be unclean seven days4 #ai3ag4 ,and they shall take of the ashes of the burning and of the sin offering1 and shall pour living waters upon them into a vessel4 #ai3ah4 ,and a man that is clean shall dip hyssop in them1 and shall sprinkle therewith all the tent1 and all the furniture1 and the men that are defiled with touching any such thing3 #ai3ai4 ,and in this manner he that is clean shall purify the unclean on the third and on the seventh day4 ,and being expiated the seventh day1 he shall wash both himself and his garments1 and be unclean until the evening4 #ai3bj4 ,if any man be not expiated after this rite1 his soul shall perish out of the midst of the church3 because he garments4 ,every one that shall touch the waters of expiation1 shall be unclean until the evening4 #ai3bb4 ,whatsoever a person toucheth who is unclean1 he shall make it unclean3 and the person that buried in the same place4 #bj3b4 ,and the people wanting water1 came together against ,moses and ,aaron3 #bj3c4 ,and making a sedition1 they said3 ,would ,god we had perished among our brethren before the ,lord4 #bj3d4 ,why have you brought out the church of the ,lord into the wilderness1 that both we and our cattle should die8 #bj3e4 ,why have you made us come up out of ,egypt1 and have brought us into this wretched place which cannot be sowed1 nor bringeth forth figs1 nor vines1 nor pomegranates1 neither is there any water to drink8 #bj3f4 ,and ,moses and ,aaron leaving the multitude1 went into the tabernacle of the covenant1 and fell flat upon the ground1 and cried to the ,lord1 and said4 ,o ,lord ,god1 hear the cry of this people1 and open to them thy treasure1 a fountain of living water1 that being satisfied1 they may cease to murmur4 ,and the glory of the ,lord appeared over them4 #bj3g4 ,and the ,lord spoke to ,moses1 saying3 #bj3h4 ,take the rod1 and assemble the people together1 thou and ,aaron thy brother1 and speak to the rock before them1 and it shall yield waters4 ,and when thou hast brought forth water out of the rock1 all the multitude and their cattle shall drink4 #bj3i4 ,moses therefore took the rod1 which was before the ,lord1 as he had commanded him1 #bj3aj4 ,and having gathered together the multitude before the rock1 he said to them3 ,hear1 ye rebellious and incredulous3 ,can we bring you forth water out of this rock8 #bj3aa4 ,and when ,moses bad lifted up his hand1 and struck the rock twice with the rod1 there came forth water in great abundance1 so that the people and their cattle drank1 ,the rock444 ,this rock was a figure of ,christ1 and the water that issued out from the rock1 of his precious blood1 the source of all our good4 #bj3ab4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses and ,aaron3 ,because you have not believed me1 to sanctify me before the children of ,israel1 you shall not bring these people into the land1 which ,i will give them4 ,you have not believed1 etc444 ,the fault of ,moses and ,aaron1 on this occasion1 was a certain diffidence and weakness of faith2 not doubting of ,god's power or veracity2 but apprehending the unworthiness of that rebellious and incredulous people1 and therefore speaking with some ambiguity4 #bj3ac4 ,this is the ,water of contradiction1 where the children of ,israel strove with words against the ,lord1 and he was sanctified in them4 ,the ,water of contradiction444 ,or strife4 ,hebrew1 ,meribah4 #bj3ad4 ,in the mean time ,moses sent messengers from ,cades to the king of ,edom1 to say3 ,thus saith thy brother ,israel3 ,thou knowest all the labour that hath come upon us3 #bj3ae4 ,in what manner our fathers went down into ,egypt1 and there we dwelt a long time1 and the ,egyptians afflicted us and our fathers4 #bj3af4 ,and how we cried to the ,lord1 and he heard us1 and sent an angel1 who hath brought us out of ,egypt4 ,lo1 we are now in the city of ,cades1 which is in the uttermost of thy borders1 #bj3ag4 ,and we beseech thee that we may have leave to pass through thy country4 ,we will not go through the fields1 nor through the vineyards1 we will not drink the waters of thy wells1 but we will go by the common highway1 neither turning aside to the right hand1 nor to the left1 till we are past thy borders4 #bj3ah4 ,and ,edom answered them3 ,thou shalt not pass by me3 if thou dost ,i will come out armed against thee4 #bj3ai4 ,and the children of ,israel said3 ,we will go by the beaten way3 and if we and our cattle drink of thy waters1 we will give thee what is just3 there shall be no difficulty in the price1 only let us pass speedily4 #bj3bj4 ,but he answered3 ,thou shalt not pass4 ,and immediately he came forth to meet them with an infinite multitude1 and a strong hand1 #bj3ba4 ,neither would he condescend to their desire to grant them passage through his borders4 ,wherefore ,israel turned another way from him4 #bj3bb4 ,and when they had removed the camp from ,cades1 they came to mount ,hor1 which is in the borders of the land of ,edom3 #bj3bc4 ,where the ,lord spoke to ,moses3 #bj3bd4 ,let ,aaron1 saith he1 go to his people3 for he shall not go into the land which ,i have given the children of ,israel1 because he was incredulous to my words1 at the waters of contradiction4 #bj3be4 ,take ,aaron and his son with him1 and bring them up into mount ,hor3 #bj3bf4 ,and when thou hast stripped the father of his vesture1 thou shalt vest therewith ,eleazar his son3 ,aaron shall be gathered to his people1 and die there4 #bj3bg4 ,moses did as the ,lord had commanded3 and they went up into mount ,hor before all the multitude4 #bj3bh4 ,and when he had stripped ,aaron of his vestments1 he vested ,eleazar his son with them4 #bj3bi4 ,and ,aaron east4 #ba3ab4 ,and removing from thence1 they came to the torrent ,zared3 #ba3ac4 ,which they left and encamped over against ,arnon1 which is in the desert and standeth out on the borders of the ,amorrhite4 ,for ,arnon is the border of ,moab1 dividing the ,moabites and the ,amorrhites4 #ba3ad4 ,wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the ,lord3 ,as he did in the ,red ,sea1 so will he do in the streams of ,arnon4 ,the book of the wars1 etc444 ,an ancient book1 which1 like several others quoted in scripture1 has been lost4 #ba3ae4 ,the rocks of the torrents were bowed down that they the princes3 ,go into your country1 because the ,lord hath forbid me to come with you4 #bb3ad4 ,the princes returning1 said to ,balac3 ,balaam would not come with us4 #bb3ae4 ,then he sent many more and more noble than he had sent before3 #bb3af4 ,who1 when they were come to ,balaam1 said3 ,thus saith ,balac the son of ,sephor1 ,delay not to come to me3 #bb3ag4 ,for ,i am ready to honour thee1 and will give thee whatsoever thou wilt3 come and curse this people4 #bb3ah4 ,balaam answered3 ,if ,balac would give me his house full of silver and gold1 ,i cannot alter the word of the ,lord my ,god1 to speak either more or less4 #bb3ai4 ,i pray you to stay here this night also1 that ,i may know what the ,lord will answer me once more4 ,to stay444 ,his desiring them to stay1 after he had been fully informed already that it was not ,god's will he should go1 came from the inclination he had to gratify ,balac1 for the sake of worldly gain4 ,and this perverse disposition ,god punished by permitting him to go 7though not to curse the people as he would willingly have done71 and suffering him to fall still deeper and deeper into sin1 till he came at last to give that abominable counsel against the people of ,god1 which ended in his own destruction4 ,so sad a thing it is to indulge a passion for money4 #bb3bj4 ,god therefore came to ,balaam in the night1 and said to him3 ,if these men be come to call thee1 arise and go with them3 yet so1 that thou do what ,i shall command thee4 #bb3ba4 ,balaam arose in the morning1 and saddling his ass went with them4 #bb3bb4 ,and ,god was angry4 ,and an angel of the ,lord stood in the way against ,balaam1 who sat on the ass1 and had two servants with him4 #bb3bc4 ,the ass seeing the angel standing in the way1 with a drawn sword1 turned herself out of the way1 and went into the field4 ,and when ,balaam beat her1 and had a mind to bring her again to the way1 #bb3bd4 ,the angel stood in a narrow place between two walls1 wherewith the vineyards were enclosed4 #bb3be4 ,and the ass seeing him1 thrust herself close to the wall1 and bruised the foot of the rider4 ,but he beat her again3 #bb3bf4 ,and nevertheless the angel going on to a narrow place1 where there was no way to turn aside either to the right hand or to the left1 stood to meet him4 #bb3bg4 ,and when the ass saw the angel standing1 she fell under the feet of the rider3 who being angry beat her sides more vehemently with a staff4 #bb3bh4 ,and the ,lord opened the mouth of the ass1 and she said3 ,what have ,i done to thee8 ,why strikest thou me1 lo1 now this third time8 ,opened the mouth1 etc444 ,the angel moved the tongue of the ass1 to utter these speeches1 to rebuke1 by the mouth of a brute beast1 the brutal fury and folly of ,balaam4 #bb3bi4 ,balaam answered3 ,because thou hast deserved it1 and hast served me ill3 ,i would ,i had a sword that ,i might kill thee4 #bb3cj4 ,the ass said3 ,am not ,i thy beast1 on which thou hast been always accustomed to ride until this present day8 tell me if ,i ever did the like thing to thee4 ,but he said3 ,never4 #bb3ca4 ,forthwith the ,lord opened the eyes of ,balaam1 and he saw the angel standing in the way with a drawn sword1 and he worshipped him falling flat on the ground4 #bb3cb4 ,and the angel said to him3 ,why beatest thou thy ass these three times8 ,i am come to withstand thee1 because thy way is perverse1 and contrary to me3 ,perverse444 ,because thy inclinations are wicked in being willing for the sake of gain to curse the people of whom ,i am the guardian4 #bb3cc4 ,and unless the ass had turned out of the way1 giving place to me who stood against thee1 ,i had slain thee1 and she should have lived4 #bb3cd4 ,balaam said3 ,i have sinned1 not knowing that thou didst stand against me3 and now if it displease thee that ,i go1 ,i will return4 #bb3ce4 ,the angel said3 ,go with these men1 and see thou speak no other thing than what ,i shall command thee4 ,he went therefore with the princes4 #bb3cf4 ,and when ,balac heard it he came forth to meet him in a town of the ,moabites1 that is situate in the uttermost borders of ,arnon4 #bb3cg4 ,and he said to ,balaam3 ,i sent messengers to call thee1 why didst thou not come immediately to me8 was it because ,i am not able to reward thy coming8 #bb3ch4 ,he answered him3 ,lo1 here ,i am3 shall ,i have power to speak any other thing but that which ,god shall put in my mouth8 #bb3ci4 ,so they went on together1 and came into a city1 that was in the uttermost borders of his kingdom4 #bb3dj4 ,and when ,balac had killed oxen and sheep1 he sent presents to ,balaam1 and to the princes that were with him4 #bb3da4 ,and when morning was come1 he brought him to the high places of ,baal1 and he beheld the uttermost part of the people4 ,numbers ,chapter #bc ,balaam1 instead of cursing ,israel1 is obliged to bless them1 and prophesy good things of them4 #bc3a4 ,and ,balaam said to ,balac3 ,build me here seven altars1 and prepare as many calves1 and the same number of rams4 #bc3b4 ,and when he had done according to the word of ,balaam1 they laid together a calf and a ram upon every altar4 #bc3c4 ,and ,balaam said to ,balac3 ,stand a while by thy burnt offering1 until ,i go1 to see if perhaps the ,lord will meet me1 and whatsoever he shall command1 ,i will speak to thee4 #bc3d4 ,and when he was gone with speed1 ,god met him4 ,and ,balaam speaking to him1 said3 ,i have erected seven altars1 and have laid on everyone a calf and a ram4 #bc3e4 ,and the ,lord put the word in his mouth1 and said3 ,return to ,balac1 and thus shalt thou speak4 #bc3f4 ,returning he found ,balac standing by his burnt offering1 with all the princes of the ,moabites3 #bc3g4 ,and taking up his parable1 he said3 ,balac king of the ,moabites hath brought me from ,aram1 from the mountains of the east3 ,come1 said he1 and curse ,jacob3 make haste and detest ,israel4 #bc3h4 ,how shall ,i curse him1 whom ,god hath not cursed8 ,by what means should ,i detest him1 whom the ,lord detesteth not8 #bc3i4 ,i shall see him from the tops of the rocks1 and shall consider him from the hills4 ,this people shall dwell alone1 and shall not be reckoned among the nations4 #bc3aj4 ,who can count the dust of ,jacob1 and know the number of the stock of ,israel8 ,let my soul die the death of the just1 and my last end be like to them4 #bc3aa4 ,and ,balac said to ,balaam3 ,what is this that thou dost8 ,i sent for thee to curse my enemies3 and thou contrariwise blessest them4 #bc3ab4 ,he answered him3 ,can ,i speak any thing else but what the ,lord commandeth8 #bc3ac4 ,balac therefore said3 ,come with me to another place from whence thou mayest see part of ,israel1 and canst not see them all3 curse them from thence4 #bc3ad4 ,and when he had brought him to a high place1 upon the top of mount ,phasga1 ,balaam built seven altars1 and laying on every one a calf and a ram1 #bc3ae4 ,he said to ,balac3 ,stand here by thy burnt offering while ,i go to meet him4 #bc3af4 ,and when the ,lord had met him1 and had put the word in his mouth1 he said3 ,return to ,balac1 and thus shalt thou say to him4 #bc3ag4 ,returning he found him standing by his burnt sacrifice1 and the princes of the ,moabites with him4 ,and ,balac said to him3 ,what hath the ,lord spoken8 #bc3ah4 ,but he taking up his parable1 said3 ,stand1 ,o ,balac1 and give ear3 hear1 thou son of ,sephor3 #bc3ai4 ,god is not a man1 that he should lie1 nor is the son of man1 that he should be changed4 ,hath he said then1 and will he not do8 hath he spoken1 and will he not fulfil8 #bc3bj4 ,i was brought to bless1 the blessing ,i am not able to hinder4 #bc3ba4 ,there is no idol in ,jacob1 neither is there an image god to be seen in ,israel4 ,the ,lord his ,god is with him1 and the sound of the victory of the king in him4 #bc3bb4 ,god hath brought him out of ,egypt1 whose strength is like to the rhinoceros4 #bc3bc4 ,there is no soothsaying in ,jacob1 nor divination in ,israel4 ,in their times it shall be told to ,jacob and to ,israel what ,god hath wrought4 #bc3bd4 ,behold the people shall rise up as a lioness1 and shall lift itself up as a lion3 it shall not lie down till it devour the prey1 and drink the blood of the slain4 #bc3be4 ,and ,balac said to ,balaam3 ,neither curse1 nor bless him4 #bc3bf4 ,and he said3 ,did ,i not tell thee1 that whatsoever ,god should command me1 that ,i would do8 #bc3bg4 ,and ,balac said to him3 ,come and ,i will bring thee to another place2 if peradventure it please ,god that thou mayest curse them from thence4 #bc3bh4 ,and when he had brought him upon the top of mount ,phogor1 which looketh towards the wilderness1 #bc3bi4 ,balaam said to him3 ,build me here seven altars1 and prepare as many calves1 and the same number of rams4 #bc3cj4 ,balac did as ,balaam had said3 and he laid on every altar1 a calf and a ram4 ,numbers ,chapter #bd ,balaam still continues to prophesy good things in favour of ,israel4 #bd3a4 ,and when ,balaam saw that it pleased the ,lord that he should bless ,israel1 he went not as he had gone before1 to seek divination3 but setting his face towards the desert1 #bd3b4 ,and lifting up his eyes1 he saw ,israel abiding in their tents by their tribes3 and the spirit of ,god rushing upon him1 #bd3c4 ,he took up his parable and said3 ,balaam the son of ,beor hath said3 ,the man hath said1 whose eye is stopped up3 #bd3d4 ,the bearer of the words of ,god hath said1 he that hath beheld the vision of the ,almighty1 he that falleth1 and so his eyes are opened3 #bd3e4 ,how beautiful are thy tabernacles ,o ,jacob1 and thy tents1 ,o ,israel6 #bd3f4 ,as woody valleys1 as watered gardens near the rivers1 as tabernacles which the ,lord hath pitched1 as cedars by the waterside4 #bd3g4 ,water shall flow out of his bucket1 and his seed shall be in many waters4 ,for ,agag his king shall be removed1 and his kingdom shall be taken away4 #bd3h4 ,god hath brought him out of ,egypt1 whose strength is like to the rhinoceros4 ,they shall devour the nations that are his enemies1 and break their bones1 and pierce them with arrows4 #bd3i4 ,lying down he hath slept as a lion1 and as a lioness1 whom none shall dare to rouse4 ,he that blesseth thee1 shall also himself be blessed3 he that curseth thee shall be reckoned accursed4 #bd3aj4 ,and ,balac being angry against ,balaam1 clapped his hands together and said3 ,i called thee to curse my enemies1 and thou on the contrary hast blessed them three times4 #bd3aa4 ,return to thy place4 ,i had determined indeed greatly to honour thee1 but the ,lord hath deprived thee of the honour designed for thee4 #bd3ab4 ,balaam made answer to ,balac3 ,did ,i not say to thy messengers1 whom thou sentest to me3 #bd3ac4 ,if ,balac would give me his house full of silver and gold1 ,i cannot go beyond the word of the ,lord my ,god1 to utter any thing of my own head either good or evil3 but whatsoever the ,lord shall say1 that ,i will speak8 #bd3ad4 ,but yet going to my people1 ,i will give thee counsel1 what this people shall do to thy people in the latter days4 #bd3ae4 ,therefore taking up his parable1 again he said3 ,balaam the son of ,beor hath said3 ,the man whose eye is stopped up1 hath said3 #bd3af4 ,the hearer of the words of ,god hath said1 who knoweth the doctrine of the ,highest1 and seeth the visions of the ,almighty1 who falling hath his eyes opened3 #bd3ag4 ,i shall see him1 but not now3 ,i shall behold him1 but not near4 ,a ,,star ,,shall ,,rise out of ,jacob and a sceptre shall spring up from ,israel3 and shall strike the chiefs of ,moab1 and shall waste all the children of ,seth #bd3ah4 ,and he shall possess ,idumea3 the inheritance of ,seir shall come to their enemies1 but ,israel shall do manfully4 #bd3ai4 ,out of ,jacob shall he come that shall rule1 and shall destroy the remains of the city4 #bd3bj4 ,and when he saw ,amalec1 he took up his parable1 and said3 ,amalec the beginning of nations1 whose latter ends shall be destroyed4 #bd3ba4 ,he saw also the ,cinite3 and took up his parable1 and said3 ,thy habitation indeed is strong3 but though thou build thy nest in a rock1 #bd3bb4 ,and thou be chosen of the stock of ,cin1 how long shalt thou be able to continue8 ,for ,assur shall take thee captive4 #bd3bc4 ,and taking up his parable1 again he said3 ,alas1 who shall live when ,god shall do these things8 #bd3bd4 ,they shall come in galleys from ,italy1 they shall overcome the ,assyrians1 and shall waste the ,hebrews1 and at the last they themselves also shall perish4 #bd3be4 ,and ,balaam rose1 and returned to his place3 ,balac also returned the way that he came4 ,numbers ,chapter #be ,the people fall into fornication and idolatry2 for which twenty-four thousand are slain4 ,the zeal of ,phinees4 #be3a4 ,and ,israel at that time abode in ,settim1 and the people committed fornication with the daughters of ,moab1 #be3b4 ,who called them to their sacrifices4 ,and they ate of them1 and adored their gods4 #be3c4 ,and ,israel was initiated to ,beelphegor3 upon which the ,lord being angry1 ,initiated to ,beelphegor444 ,that is1 they took to the worship of ,beelphegor1 an obscene idol of the ,moabites1 and were consecrated1 as it were1 to him4 #be3d4 ,said to ,moses3 ,take all the princes of the people1 and hang them up on gibbets against the sun3 that my fury may be turned away from ,israel4 #be3e4 ,and ,moses said to the judges of ,israel3 ,let every man kill his neighbours1 that have been initiated to ,beelphegor4 #be3f4 ,and behold one of the children of ,israel went in before his brethren to a harlot of ,madian1 in the sight of ,moses and of all the children of ,israel1 who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle4 #be3g4 ,and when ,phinees the son of ,eleazar the son of ,aaron the priest saw it1 he rose up from the midst of the multitude1 and taking a dagger1 #be3h4 ,went in after the ,israelite into the brothel house1 and thrust both of them through together1 to wit1 the man and the woman in the genital parts4 ,and the scourge ceased from the children of ,israel4 #be3i4 ,and there were slain four and twenty thousand men4 #be3aj4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 #be3aa4 ,phinees the son of ,eleazar the son of ,aaron the priest1 hath turned away my wrath from the children of ,israel3 because he was moved with my zeal against them1 that ,i myself might not destroy the children of ,israel in my zeal4 #be3ab4 ,therefore say to him3 behold ,i give him the peace of my covenant1 #be3ac4 ,and the covenant of the priesthood for ever shall be both to him and his seed1 because he hath been zealous for his ,god1 and hath made atonement for the wickedness of the children of ,israel4 #be3ad4 ,and the name of the ,israelite1 that was slain with the woman of ,madian1 was ,zambri the son of ,salu1 a prince of the kindred and tribe of ,simeon4 #be3ae4 ,and the ,madianite woman1 that was slain with him1 was called ,cozbi the daughter of ,sur1 a most noble prince among the ,madianites4 #be3af4 ,and the ,lord spoke to ,moses1 saying3 #be3ag4 ,let the ,madianites find you their enemies1 and slay you them3 #be3ah4 ,because they also sacrilege of ,phogor4 ,numbers ,chapter #bf ,the people are again numbered by their tribes and families4 #bf3a4 ,after the blood of the guilty was shed1 the ,lord said to ,moses and to ,eleazar the
