going out3 because it contains the history of the going out of the children of ,israel out of ,egypt4 ,the ,hebrews1 from the words with which it begins1 call it ,,veelle ,,semoth3 ,these are the names4 ,it contains transactions for #ade years2 that is1 from the death of ,joseph to the erecting of the tabernacle4 ,exodus ,chapter #a ,the ,israelites are multiplied in ,egypt4 ,they are oppressed by a new king1 who commandeth all their male children to be killed4 #a3a4 ,these are the names of the children of ,israel1 that went into ,egypt with ,jacob3 they went in every man with his household3 #a3b4 ,ruben1 ,simeon1 ,levi1 ,juda1 #a3c4 ,issachar1 ,zabulon1 and ,benjamin1 #a3d4 ,dan1 and ,nephthali1 ,gad and ,aser4 #a3e4 ,and all the souls that came out of ,jacob's thigh1 were seventy3 but ,joseph was in ,egypt4 #a3f4 ,after he was dead1 and all his brethren1 and all that generation1 #a3g4 ,the children of ,israel increased1 and sprung up into multitudes1 and growing exceedingly strong they filled the land4 #a3h4 ,in the mean time there arose a new king over ,egypt1 that knew not ,joseph3 #a3i4 ,and he said to his people3 ,behold the people of the children of ,israel are numerous and stronger than we4 #a3aj4 ,come let us wisely oppress them1 lest they multiply3 and if any war shall rise against us1 join with our enemies1 and having overcome us1 depart out of the land4 #a3aa4 ,therefore he set over them masters of the works1 to afflict them with burdens3 and they built for ,pharao cities of tabernacles1 ,phithom1 and ,ramesses4 ,of tabernacles444 ,or1 of storehouses4 #a3ab4 ,but the more they oppressed them1 the more they were multiplied and increased4 #a3ac4 ,and the ,egyptians hated the children of ,israel1 and afflicted them and mocked them3 #a3ad4 ,and they made their life bitter with hard works in clay and brick1 and with all manner of service1 wherewith they were overcharged in the works of the earth4 #a3ae4 ,and the king of ,egypt spoke to the midwives of the ,hebrews3 of whom one was called ,sephora1 the other ,phua1 #a3af4 ,commanding them3 ,when you shall do the office of midwives to the ,hebrew women1 and the time of delivery is come3 if it be a man child1 kill it3 if a woman1 keep it alive4 #a3ag4 ,but the midwives feared ,god1 and did not do as the king of ,egypt had commanded1 but saved the men children4 #a3ah3 ,and the king called for them and said3 ,what is it that you meant to do1 that you would save the men children8 #a3ai4 ,they answered3 ,the ,hebrew women are not as the ,egyptian women3 for they themselves are skilful in the office of a midwife2 and they are delivered before we come to them4 #a3bj4 ,therefore ,god dealt well with the midwives3 and the people multiplied and grew exceedingly strong4 #a3ba4 ,and because the midwives feared ,god1 he built them houses4 ,because the midwives feared ,god1 etc444 ,the midwives were rewarded1 not for their lie1 which was a venial sin2 but for their fear of ,god1 and their humanity3 but this reward was only temporal1 in building them houses1 that is1 in establishing and enriching their families4 #a3bb4 ,pharao therefore charged all his people1 saying3 ,whatsoever shall be born of the male sex1 ye shall cast into the river3 whatsoever of the female1 ye shall save alive4 ,exodus ,chapter #b ,moses is born and exposed on the bank of the river2 where he is taken up by the daughter of ,pharao1 and adopted for her son4 ,he killeth an ,egyptian1 and fleeth into ,madian2 where he marrieth a wife4 #b3a4 ,after this there went a man of the house of ,levi2 and took a wife of his own kindred4 #b3b4 ,and she conceived1 and bore a son3 and seeing him a goodly child1 hid him three months4 #b3c4 ,and when she could hide him no longer1 she took a basket made of bulrushes1 and daubed it with slime and pitch3 and put the little babe therein1 and laid him in the sedges by the river's brink1 #b3d4 ,his sister standing afar off1 and taking notice what would be done4 #b3e4 ,and behold the daughter of ,pharao came down to wash herself in the river3 and her maids walked by the river's brink4 ,and when she saw the basket in the sedges she sent one of her maids for it3 and when it was brought1 #b3f4 ,she opened it1 and seeing within it an infant crying1 having compassion on it1 she said3 ,this is one of the babes of the ,hebrews4 #b3g4 ,and the child's sister said to her3 ,shall ,i go1 and call to thee a ,hebrew woman1 to nurse the babe8 #b3h4 ,she answered3 ,go4 ,the maid went and called her mother4 #b3i4 ,and ,pharao's daughter said to her3 ,take this child1 and nurse him for me3 ,i will give thee thy wages4 ,the woman took and nursed the child3 and when he was grown up1 she delivered him to ,pharao's daughter4 #b3aj4 ,and she adopted him for a son1 and called him ,moses1 saying3 ,because ,i took him out of the water4 ,moses444 ,or ,moyses1 in the ,egyptian tongue1 signifies one taken or saved out of the water4 #b3aa4 ,in those days1 after ,moses was grown up1 he went out to his brethren3 and saw their affliction1 and an ,egyptian striking one of the ,hebrews1 his brethren4 #b3ab4 ,and when he had looked about this way and that way1 and saw no one there1 he slew the ,egyptian and hid him in the sand4 ,he slew the ,egyptian444 ,this he did by a particular inspiration of ,god2 as a prelude to his delivering the people from their oppression and bondage4 ,he thought1 says ,st4 ,stephen1 ,acts #g4be1 that his brethren understood that ,god by his hand would save them4 ,but such particular and extraordinary examples are not to be imitated4 #b3ac4 ,and going out the next day1 he saw two ,hebrews quarrelling3 and he said to him that did the wrong3 ,why strikest thou thy neighbour8 #b3ad4 ,but he answered3 ,who hath appointed thee prince and judge over us8 wilt thou kill me1 as thou didst yesterday kill the ,egyptian8 ,moses feared1 and said3 ,how is this come to be known8 #b3ae4 ,and ,pharao heard of this word1 and sought to kill ,moses3 but he fled from his sight1 and abode in the land of ,madian1 and he sat down by a well4 ,madian444 ,a city and country of ,arabia1 which took its name from ,madian the son of ,abraham1 by ,cetura1 and was peopled by his posterity4 #b3af4 ,and the priest of ,madian had seven daughters1 who came to draw water3 and when the troughs were filled1 desired to water their father's flocks4 #b3ag4 ,and the shepherds came and drove them away3 and ,moses arose1 and defending the maids1 watered their sheep4 #b3ah3 ,and when they returned to ,raguel their father1 he said to them3 ,why are ye come sooner than usual8 ,raguel444 ,he had two names1 being also called ,jethro1 as appears from the first verse of the following chapter4 #b3ai4 ,they answered3 ,a man of ,egypt delivered us from the hands of the shepherds3 and he drew water also with us1 and gave the sheep to drink4 #b3bj4 ,but he said3 ,where is he8 why have you let the man go8 call him that he may eat bread4 #b3ba4 ,and ,moses swore that he would dwell with him4 ,and he took ,sephora his daughter to wife3 #b3bb4 ,and she bore him a son1 whom he called ,gersam1 saying3 ,i have been a stranger in a foreign country4 ,and she bore another1 whom he called ,eliezer1 saying3 ,for the ,god of my father1 my helper1 hath delivered me out of the hand of ,pharao4 ,gersam444 ,or ,gershom4 ,this name signifies a stranger there3 as ,eliezer signifies the help of ,god4 #b3bc4 ,now after a long time the king of ,egypt died3 and the children of ,israel groaning1 cried out because of the works3 and their cry went up unto ,god from the works4 #b3bd4 ,and he heard their groaning1 and remembered the covenant which he made with ,abraham1 ,isaac1 and ,jacob4 #b3be4 ,and the ,lord looked upon the children of ,israel1 and he knew them4 ,knew them444 ,that is1 he had respect to them1 he cast a merciful eye upon them4 ,exodus ,chapter #c ,god appeareth to ,moses in a bush1 and sendeth him to deliver ,israel4 #c3a4 ,now ,moses fed the sheep of ,jethro1 his father in law1 the priest of ,madian3 and he drove the flock to the inner parts of the desert1 and came to the mountain of ,god1 ,horeb4 #c3b4 ,and the ,lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush3 and he saw that the bush was on fire1 and was not burnt4 ,the ,lord appeared444 ,that is1 an angel representing ,god1 and speaking in his name4 #c3c4 ,and ,moses said3 ,i will go1 and see this great sight1 why the bush is not burnt4 #c3d4 ,and when the ,lord saw that he went forward to see1 he called to him out of the midst of the bush and said3 ,moses1 ,moses4 ,and he answered3 ,here ,i am4 #c3e4 ,and he said3 ,come not nigh hither1 put off the shoes from thy feet2 for the place1 whereon thou standest1 is holy ground4 #c3f4 ,and he said3 ,i am the ,god of thy father1 the ,god of ,abraham1 the ,god of ,isaac1 and the ,god of ,jacob4 ,moses hid his face3 for he durst not look at ,god4 #c3g4 ,and the ,lord said to him3 ,i have seen the affliction of my people in ,egypt1 and ,i have heard their cry because of the rigour of them that are over the works2 #c3h4 ,and knowing their sorrow1 ,i am come down to deliver them out of the hands of the ,egyptians1 and to bring them out of that land into a good and spacious land1 into a land that floweth with milk and honey1 to the places of the ,chanaanite1 and ,hethite1 and ,amorrhite1 and ,pherezite1 and ,hevite1 and ,jebusite4 #c3i4 ,for the cry of the children of ,israel is come unto me3 and ,i have seen their affliction1 wherewith they are oppressed by the ,egyptians4 #c3aj4 ,but come1 and ,i will send thee to ,pharao1 that thou mayst bring forth my people1 the children of ,israel1 out of ,egypt4 #c3aa4 ,and ,moses said to ,god3 ,who am ,i that ,i should go to ,pharao1 and should bring forth the children of ,israel out of ,egypt8 #c3ab4 ,and he said to him3 ,i will be with thee2 and this thou shalt have for a sign that ,i have sent thee3 ,when thou shalt have brought my people out of ,egypt1 thou shalt offer sacrifice to ,god upon this mountain4 #c3ac4 ,moses said to ,god3 ,lo1 ,i shall go to the children of ,israel1 and say to them3 ,the ,god of your fathers hath sent me to you4 ,if they shall say to me3 ,what is his name8 ,what shall ,i say to them8 #c3ad4 ,god said to ,moses3 ,i ,,am ,,who ,,am4 ,he said3 ,thus shalt thou say to the children of ,israel3 ,,he ,,who ,,is1 hath sent me to you4 ,i am who am444 ,that is1 ,i am being itself1 eternal1 self-existent1 independent1 infinite2 without beginning1 end1 or change2 and the source of all other beings4 #c3ae4 ,and ,god said again to ,moses3 ,thus shalt thou say to the children of ,israel3 ,the ,lord ,god of your fathers the ,god of ,abraham1 the ,god of ,isaac1 and the ,god of ,jacob hath sent me to you2 this is my name for ever1 and this is my memorial unto all generations4 #c3af4 ,go and gather together the ancients of ,israel1 and thou shalt say to them3 ,the ,lord ,god of your fathers1 the ,god of ,abraham1 the ,god of ,isaac1 and the ,god of ,jacob1 hath appeared to me1 saying3 ,visiting ,i have visited you2 and ,i have seen all that hath befallen you in ,egypt4 #c3ag4 ,and ,i have said the word to bring you forth out of the affliction of ,egypt1 into the land of the ,chanaanite1 and ,hethite1 and ,amorrhite1 and ,pherezite1 and ,hevite1 and ,jebusite1 to a land that floweth with milk and honey4 #c3ah3 ,and they shall hear thy voice2 and thou shalt go in1 thou and the ancients of ,israel1 to the king of ,egypt1 and thou shalt say to him3 ,the ,lord ,god of the ,hebrews hath called us2 we will go three days' journey into the wilderness1 to sacrifice unto the ,lord our ,god4 #c3ai4 ,but ,i know that the king of ,egypt will not let you go1 but by a mighty hand4 #c3bj4 ,for ,i will stretch forth my hand1 and will strike ,egypt with all my wonders which ,i will do in the midst of them3 after these he will let you go4 #c3ba4 ,and ,i will give favour to this people1 in the sight of the ,egyptians3 and when you go forth1 you shall not depart empty3 #c3bb4 ,but every woman shall ask of her neighbour1 and of her that is in her house1 vessels of silver and of gold1 and raiment3 and you shall put them on your sons and daughters1 and shall spoil ,egypt4 ,shall spoil1 etc444 ,that is1 you shall strip1 and take away the goods of the ,egyptians4 ,this was not authorizing theft or injustice2 but was a just disposal made by ,him1 who is the great lord and master of all things1 in order to pay the children of ,israel some part of what was due to them from the ,egyptians for their labours4 ,exodus ,chapter #d ,moses is empowered to confirm his mission with miracles3 his brother ,aaron is appointed to assist him4 #d3a4 ,moses answered1 and said3 ,they will not believe me1 nor hear my voice1 but they will say3 ,the ,lord hath not appeared to thee4 #d3b4 ,then he said to him3 ,what is that thou holdest in thy hand8 ,he answered3 ,a rod4 #d3c4 ,and the ,lord said3 ,cast it down upon the ground4 ,he cast it down1 and it was turned into a serpent1 so that ,moses fled from it4 #d3d4 ,and the ,lord said3 ,put out thy hand1 and take it by the tail4 ,he put forth his hand1 and took hold of it1 and it was turned into a rod4 #d3e4 ,that they may believe1 saith he1 that the ,lord ,god of their fathers1 the ,god of ,abraham1 the ,god of ,isaac1 and the ,god of ,jacob1 hath appeared to thee4 #d3f4 ,and the ,lord said again3 ,put thy hand into thy bosom4 ,and when he had put it into his bosom1 he brought it forth leprous as snow4 #d3g4 ,and he said3 ,put back thy hand into thy bosom4 ,he put it back1 and brought it out again1 and it was like the other flesh4 #d3h4 ,if they will not believe thee1 saith he1 nor hear the voice of the former sign1 they will believe the word of the latter sign4 #d3i4 ,but if they will not even believe these two signs1 nor hear thy voice3 take of the river water1 and pour it out upon the dry land1 and whatsoever thou drawest out of the river1 shall be turned into blood4 #d3aj4 ,moses said3 ,i beseech thee1 ,lord1 ,i am not eloquent from yesterday and the day before2 and since thou hast spoken to thy servant1 ,i have more impediment and slowness of tongue4 #d3aa4 ,the ,lord said to him3 ,who made man's mouth8 or who made the dumb and the deaf1 the seeing and the blind8 did not ,i8 #d3ab4 ,go therefore1 and ,i will be in thy mouth2 and ,i will teach thee what thou shalt speak4 #d3ac4 ,but he said3 ,i beseech thee1 ,lord1 send whom thou wilt send4 #d3ad4 ,the ,lord being angry at ,moses1 said3 ,aaron the ,levite is thy brother1 ,i know that he is eloquent3 behold he cometh forth to meet thee1 and seeing thee1 shall be glad at heart4 #d3ae4 ,speak to him1 and put my words in his mouth3 and ,i will be in thy mouth1 and in his month1 and will shew you what you must do4 #d3af4 ,he shall speak in thy stead to the people1 and shall be thy mouth3 but thou shalt be to him in those things that pertain to ,god4 #d3ag4 ,and take this rod in thy hand wherewith thou shalt do the signs4 #d3ah3 ,moses went his way1 and returned to ,jethro his father in law1 and said to him2 ,i will go and return to my brethren into ,egypt1 that ,i may see if they be yet alive4 ,and ,jethro said to him3 ,go in peace4 #d3ai4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses1 in ,madian3 ,go1 and return into ,egypt2 for they are all dead that sought thy life4 #d3bj4 ,moses therefore took his wife1 and his sons1 and set them upon an ass2 and returned into ,egypt1 carrying the rod of ,god in his hand4 #d3ba4 ,and the ,lord said to him as he was returning into ,egypt3 ,see that thou do all the wonders before ,pharao1 which ,i have put in thy hand3 ,i shall harden his heart1 and he will not let the people go4 ,i shall harden1 etc444 ,not by being the efficient cause of his sin2 but by withdrawing from him1 for his just punishment1 the dew of grace that might have softened his heart2 and so suffering him to grow harder and harder4 #d3bb4 ,and thou shalt say to him3 ,thus saith the ,lord3 ,israel is my son1 my firstborn4 #d3bc4 ,i have said to thee3 ,let my son go1 that he may serve me1 and thou wouldst not let him go3 behold ,i will kill thy son1 thy firstborn4 #d3bd4 ,and when he was in his journey1 in the inn1 the ,lord met him1 and would have killed him4 ,the ,lord met him1 and would have killed him444 ,this was an angel representing the ,lord1 who treated ,moses in this manner1 for having neglected the circumcision of his younger son2 which his wife understanding1 circumcised her child upon the spot1 upon which the angel let ,moses go4 #d3be4 ,immediately ,sephora took a very sharp stone1 and circumcised the foreskin of her son1 and touched his feet1 and said3 ,a bloody spouse art thou to me4 #d3bf4 ,and he let him go after she had said3 ,a bloody spouse art thou to me1 because of the circumcision4 #d3bg4 ,and the ,lord said to ,aaron3 ,go into the desert to meet ,moses4 ,and he went forth to meet him in the mountain of ,god1 and kissed him4 #d3bh4 ,and ,moses told ,aaron all the words of the ,lord1 by which he had sent him1 and the signs that he had commanded4 #d3bi4 ,and they came together1 and they assembled all the ancients of the children of ,israel4 #d3cj4 ,and ,aaron spoke all the words which the ,lord had said to ,moses3 and he wrought the signs before the people4 #d3ca4 ,and the people believed4 ,and they heard that the ,lord had visited the children of ,israel1 and that he had looked upon their affliction3 and falling down they adored4 ,exodus ,chapter #e ,pharao refuseth to let the people go4 ,they are more oppressed4 #e3a4 ,after these things1 ,moses and ,aaron went in1 and said to ,pharao3 ,thus saith the ,lord ,god of ,israel3 ,let my people go1 that they may sacrifice to me in the desert4 #e3b4 ,but he answered3 ,who is the ,lord1 that ,i should hear his voice1 and let ,israel go8 ,i know not the ,lord1 neither will ,i let ,israel go4 #e3c4 ,and they said3 ,the ,god of the ,hebrews hath called us1 to go three days' journey into the wilderness1 and to sacrifice to the ,lord our ,god2 lest a pestilence or the sword fall upon us4 #e3d4 ,the king of ,egypt said to them3 ,why do you ,moses and ,aaron draw off the people from their works8 ,get you gone to your burdens4 #e3e4 ,and ,pharao said3 ,the people of the land are numerous2 you see that the multitude is increased2 how much more if you give them rest from their works8 #e3f4 ,therefore he commanded the same day the overseers of the works1 and the task-masters of the people1 saying3 #e3g4 ,you shall give straw no more to the people to make brick1 as before2 but let them go and gather straw4 #e3h4 ,and you shall lay upon them the task of bricks1 which they did before2 neither shall you diminish any thing thereof1 for they are idle1 and therefore they cry4 saying3 ,let us go and sacrifice to our ,god4 #e3i4 ,let them be oppressed with works1 and let them fulfil them2 that they may not regard lying words4 #e3aj4 ,and the overseers of the works1 and the taskmasters1 went out and said to the people3 ,thus saith ,pharao3 ,i allow you no straw2 #e3aa4 ,go1 and gather it where you can find it2 neither shall any thing of your work be diminished4 #e3ab4 ,and the people was scattered through all the land of ,egypt to gather straw4 #e3ac4 ,and the overseers of the works pressed them1 saying3 ,fulfil your work every day1 as before ye were wont to do1 when straw was given you4 #e3ad4 ,and they that were over the works of the children of ,israel1 were scourged by ,pharao's taskmasters1 saying3 ,why have you not made up the task of bricks1 both yesterday and to day1 as before8 #e3ae4 ,and the officers of the children of ,israel came1 and cried out to ,pharao1 saying3 ,why dealest thou so with thy servants8 #e3af4 ,straw is not given us1 and bricks are required of us as before2 behold we1 thy servants1 are beaten with whips1 and thy people is unjustly dealt withal4 #e3ag4 ,and he said3 ,you are idle1 and therefore you say3 ,let us go and sacrifice to the ,lord4 #e3ah3 ,go therefore and work3 straw shall not be given you1 and you shall deliver the accustomed number of bricks4 #e3ai4 ,and the officers of the children of ,israel saw that they were in evil case1 because it was said to them3 ,there shall not a whit be diminished of the bricks for every day4 #e3bj4 ,and they met ,moses and ,aaron1 who stood over against them as they came out from ,pharao3 #e3ba4 ,and they said to them3 ,the ,lord see and judge1 because you have1 made our savour to stink before ,pharao and his servants1 and you have given him a sword1 to kill us4 #e3bb4 ,and ,moses returned to the ,lord1 and said3 ,lord1 why hast thou afflicted this people8 wherefore hast thou sent me8 #e3bc4 ,for since the time that ,i went in to ,pharao to speak in thy name1 he hath afflicted thy people3 and thou hast not delivered them4 ,exodus ,chapter #f ,god reneweth his promise4 ,the genealogies of ,ruben1 ,simon and ,levi1 down to ,moses and ,aaron4 #f2a4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,now thou shalt see what ,i will do to ,pharao3 for by a mighty hand shall he let them go1 and with a strong hand shall he cast them out of his land4 #f3b4 ,and the ,lord spoke to ,moses1 saying3 ,i am the ,lord #f3c4 ,that appeared to ,abraham1 to ,isaac1 and to ,jacob1 by the name of ,god ,almighty3 and my name ,,adonai ,i did not shew them4 ,my name ,adonai444 ,the name1 which is in the ,hebrew text1 is that most proper name of ,god1 which signifieth his eternal1 self-existent being1 ,ex4 #c4ad1 which the ,jews out of reverence never pronounce2 but1 instead of it1 whenever it occurs in the ,bible1 they read ,adonai1 which signifies the ,lord2 and1 therefore1 they put the points or vowels1 which belong to the name ,adonai1 to the four letters of that other ineffable name ,jod1 ,he1 ,vau1 ,he4 ,hence some moderns have framed the name ,jehovah1 unknown to all the ancients1 whether ,jews or ,christians2 for the true pronunciation of the name1 which is in the ,hebrew text1 by long disuse1 is now quite lost4 #f3d4 ,and ,i made a covenant with them1 to give them the land of ,chanaan1 the land of their pilgrimage wherein they were strangers4 #f3e4 ,i have heard the groaning of the children of ,israel1 wherewith the ,egyptians have oppressed them3 and ,i have remembered my covenant4 #f3f4 ,therefore say to the children of lsrael3 ,i am the ,lord who will bring you out from the work-prison of the ,egyptians1 and will deliver you from bondage3 and redeem you with a high arm1 and great judgments4 #f3g4 ,and ,i will take you to myself for my people1 ,i will be your ,god3 and you shall know that ,i am the ,lord your ,god1 who brought you out from the work-prison of the ,egyptians3 #f3h4 ,and brought you into the land1 concerning which ,i lifted up my hand to give it to ,abraham1 ,isaac1 and ,jacob3 and ,i will give it you to possess3 ,i am the ,lord4 #f3i4 ,and ,moses told all this to the children of ,israel3 but they did not hearken to him1 for anguish of spirit1 and most painful work4 #f3aj4 ,and the ,lord spoke to ,moses1 saying3 #f3aa4 ,go in1 and speak to ,pharao king of ,egypt1 that he let the children of ,israel go out of his land4 #f3ab4 ,moses answered before the ,lord3 ,behold the children of ,israel do not hearken to me3 and how will ,pharao hear me1 especially as ,i am of uncircumcised lips8 ,uncircumcised lips444 ,so he calls the defect he had in his words1 or utterance4 #f3ac4 ,and the ,lord spoke to ,moses and ,aaron1 and he gave them a charge unto the children of ,israel1 and unto ,pharao the king of ,egypt1 that they should bring forth the children of ,israel out of the land of ,egypt4 #f3ad4 ,these are the heads of their houses by their families4 ,the sons of ,ruben the firstborn of ,israel3 ,henoch and ,phallu1 ,hesron and the land of ,egypt4 #f3bi4 ,and the ,lord spoke to ,moses1 saying3 ,i am the ,lord2 speak thou to ,pharao1 king of ,egypt1 all that ,i say to thee4 #f3cj4 ,and ,moses said before the ,lord3 ,lo ,i am of uncircumcised lips1 how will ,pharao hear me8 ,exodus ,chapter #g ,moses and ,aaron go into ,pharao3 they turn the rod into a serpent2 and the waters of ,egypt into blood1 which was the first plague4 ,the magicians do the like1 and ,pharao's heart is hardened4 #g3a4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,behold1 ,i have appointed thee the god of ,pharao2 and ,aaron1 thy brother1 shall be thy prophet4 ,the god of ,pharao444 ,viz41 to be his judge2 and to exercise a divine power1 as ,god's instrument1 over him and his people4 #g3b4 ,thou shalt speak to him all that ,i command thee2 and he shall speak to ,pharao1 that he let the children of ,israel go out of his land4 #g3c4 ,but ,i shall harden his heart1 and shall multiply my signs and wonders in the land of ,egypt4 ,i shall harden1 etc444 not by being the efficient cause of his hardness of heart1 but by permitting it2 and by withdrawing grace from him1 in punishment of his malice2 which alone was the proper cause of his being hardened4 #g3d4 ,and he will not hear you3 and ,i will lay my hand upon ,egypt1 and will bring forth my army and my people1 the children of ,israel1 out of the land of ,egypt1 by very great judgments4 #g3e4 ,and the ,egyptians shall know that ,i am the ,lord1 who have stretched forth my hand upon ,egypt1 and have brought forth the children of ,israel out of the midst of them4 #g3f4 ,and ,moses and ,aaron did as the ,lord had commanded2 so did they4 #g3g4 ,and ,moses was eighty years old1 and ,aaron eighty-three1 when they spoke to ,pharao4 #g3h4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses and ,aaron3 #g3i4 ,when ,pharao shall say to you1 ,shew signs2 thou shalt say to ,aaron3 ,take thy rod1 and cast it down before ,pharao1 and it shall be turned into a serpent4 #g3aj4 ,so ,moses and ,aaron went in unto ,pharao1 and did as the ,lord had commanded4 ,and ,aaron took the rod before ,pharao and his servants1 and it was turned into a serpent4 #g3aa4 ,and ,pharao called the wise men and the magicians2 and they also by ,egyptian enchantments and certain secrets1 did in like manner4 ,magicians444 ,jannes1 and ,mambres1 or ,jambres1 #b ,tim4 #c4h4 #g3ab4 ,and they every one cast down their rods1 and they were turned into serpents3 but ,aaron's rod devoured their rods4 #g3ac4 ,and ,pharao's heart was hardened1 and he did not hearken to them1 as the ,lord had commanded4 #g3ad4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,pharao's heart is hardened1 he will not let the people go4 #g3ae4 ,go to him in the morning1 behold he will go out to the waters3 and thou shalt stand to meet him on the bank of the river3 and thou shalt take in thy hand the rod that was turned into a serpent4 #g3af4 ,and thou shalt say to him3 ,the ,lord ,god of the ,hebrews sent me to thee1 saying3 ,let my people go to sacrifice to me in the desert3 and hitherto thou wouldst not hear4 #g3ag4 ,thus therefore saith the ,lord3 ,in this thou shalt know that ,i am the ,lord3 behold ,i will strike with the rod1 that is in my hand1 the water of the river1 and it shall be turned into blood4 #g3ah3 ,and the fishes that are in the river1 shall die1 and the waters shall be corrupted1 and the ,egyptians shall be afflicted when they drink the water of the river4 #g3ai4 ,the ,lord also said to ,moses3 ,say to ,aaron1 ,take thy rod2 and stretch forth thy hand upon the waters of ,egypt1 and upon their rivers1 and streams and pools1 and all the ponds of waters1 that they may be turned into blood3 and let blood be in all the land of ,egypt1 both in vessels of wood and of stone4 #g3bj4 ,and ,moses and ,aaron did as the ,lord had commanded3 and lifting up the rod1 he struck the water of the river before ,pharao and his servants3 and it was turned into blood4 #g3ba4 ,and the fishes that were in the river died2 and the river corrupted1 and the ,egyptians could not drink the water of the river1 and there was blood in all the land of ,egypt4 #g3bb4 ,and the magicians of the ,egyptians with their enchantments did in like manner2 and ,pharao's heart was hardened1 neither did he hear them1 as the ,lord had commanded4 #g3bc4 ,and he turned himself away1 and went into his house1 neither did he set his heart to it this time also4 #g3bd4 ,and all the ,egyptians dug round about the river for water to drink2 for they could not drink of the water of the river4 #g3be4 ,and seven days were fully ended1 after that the ,lord struck the river4 ,exodus ,chapter #h ,the second plague is of frogs3 ,pharao promiseth to let the ,israelites go1 but breaketh his promise4 ,the third plague is of sciniphs4 ,the fourth is of flies4 ,pharao again promiseth to dismiss the people1 but doth it not4 #h3a4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,go in to ,pharao1 and thou shalt say to him3 ,thus saith the ,lord3 ,let my people go to sacrifice to me4 #h3b4 ,but if thou wilt not let them go1 behold ,i will strike all thy coasts with frogs4 #h3c4 ,and the river shall bring forth an abundance of frogs2 which shall come up and enter into thy house1 and thy bedchamber1 and upon thy bed1 and into the houses of thy servants1 and to thy people1 and into thy ovens1 and into the remains of thy meats3 #h3d4 ,and the frogs shall come in to thee1 and to thy people1 and to all thy servants4 #h3e4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,say to ,aaron3 ,stretch forth thy hand upon the streams1 and upon the rivers and the pools1 and bring forth frogs upon the land of ,egypt4 #h3f4 ,and ,aaron stretched forth his hand upon the waters of ,egypt1 and the frogs came up1 and covered the land of ,egypt4 #h3g4 ,and the magicians also1 by their enchantments1 did in like manner1 and they brought forth frogs upon the land of ,egypt4 #h3h4 ,but ,pharao called ,moses and ,aaron1 and said to them3 ,pray ye to the ,lord to take away the frogs from me and from my people2 and ,i will let the people go to sacrifice to the ,lord4 ,pray ye to the ,lord1 etc444 ,by this it appears1 that though the magicians1 by the help of the devil1 could bring frogs1 yet they could not take them away3 ,god being pleased to abridge in this the power of ,satan4 ,so we see they could not afterwards produce the lesser insects2 and in this restraint of the power of the devil1 were forced to acknowledge the finger of ,god4 #h3i4 ,and ,moses said to ,pharao3 ,set me a time when ,i shall pray for thee1 and for thy servants1 and for thy people1 that the frogs may be driven away from thee and from thy house1 and from thy servants1 and from thy people2 and may remain only in the river4 #h3aj4 ,and he answered3 ,to morrow4 ,but he said3 ,i will do according to thy word2 that thou mayest know that there is none like to the ,lord our ,god4 #h3aa4 ,and the frogs shall depart from thee1 and from thy house1 and from thy servants1 and from thy people2 and shall remain only in the river4 #h3ab4 ,and ,moses and ,aaron went forth from ,pharao3 and ,moses cried to the ,lord for the promise1 which he had made to ,pharao concerning the frogs4 #h3ac4 ,and the ,lord did according to the word of ,moses3 and the frogs died out of the houses1 and out of the villages1 and out of the fields3 #h3ad4 ,and they gathered them together into immense heaps1 and the land was corrupted4 #h3ae4 ,and ,pharao seeing that rest was given1 hardened his own heart1 and did not hear them1 as the ,lord had commanded4 ,pharao hardened his own heart444 ,by this we see that ,pharao was himself the efficient cause of his heart being hardened1 and not ,god4-,see the same repeated in ver4 #cb4 ,pharao hardened his heart at this time also3 likewise chap4 #i4g1 #ce1 and chap4 #ac4ae4 #h3af4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,say to ,aaron3 ,stretch forth thy rod1 and strike the dust of the earth2 and may there be sciniphs in all the land of ,egypt4 ,sciniphs444 ,or ,cinifs1 ,hebrew ,chinnim1 small flying insects1 very troublesome both to men and beast4 #h3ag4 ,and they did so4 ,and ,aaron stretched forth his hand1 holding the rod2 and he struck the dust of the earth1 and there came sciniphs on men and on beasts3 all the dust of the earth was turned into sciniphs through all the land of ,egypt4 #h3ah3 ,and the magicians with their enchantments practised in like manner1 to bring forth sciniphs1 and they could not3 and there were sciniphs as well on men as on beasts4 #h3ai4 ,and the magicians said to ,pharao3 ,this is the finger of ,god4 ,and ,pharao's heart was hardened1 and he hearkened not unto them1 as the ,lord had commanded4 #h3bj4 ,the ,lord also said to ,moses3 ,arise early1 and stand before ,pharao2 for he will go forth to the waters3 and thou shalt say to him3 ,thus saith the ,lord3 ,let my people go to sacrifice to me4 #h3ba4 ,but if thou wilt not let them go1 behold ,i will send in upon thee1 and upon thy servants1 and upon thy houses1 all kind of flies3 and the houses of the ,egyptians shall be filled with flies of divers kinds1 and the whole land wherein they shall be4 #h3bb4 ,and ,i will make the land of ,gessen wonderful in that day1 so that flies shall not be there3 and thou shalt know that ,i am the ,lord in the midst of the earth4 #h3bc4 ,and ,i will put a division between my people and thy people3 to morrow shall this sign be4 #h3bd4 ,and the ,lord did so4 ,and there came a very grievous swarm of flies into the houses of ,pharao and of his servants1 and into all the land of ,egypt3 and the land was corrupted by this kind of flies4 #h3be4 ,and ,pharao called ,moses and ,aaron1 and said to them3 ,go and sacrifice to your ,god in this land4 #h3bf4 ,and ,moses said3 ,it cannot be so3 for we shall sacrifice the abominations of the ,egyptians to the ,lord our ,god3 now if we kill those things which the ,egyptians worship1 in their presence1 they will stone us4 ,the abominations1 etc444 ,that is1 the things they worship for ,gods3 oxen1 rams1 etc4 ,it is the usual style of the scriptures to call all idols and false gods1 abominations1 to signify how much the people of ,god ought to detest and abhor them4 #h3bg4 ,we will go three days' journey into the wilderness2 and we will sacrifice to the ,lord our ,god1 as he hath commanded us4 #h3bh4 ,and ,pharao said3 ,i will let you go to sacrifice to the ,lord your ,god in the wilderness1 but go no farther3 pray for me4 #h3bi4 ,and ,moses said3 ,i will go out from thee1 and will pray to the ,lord3 and the flies shall depart from ,pharao1 and from his servants1 and from his people to morrow3 but do not deceive any more1 in not letting the people go to sacrifice to the ,lord4 #h3cj4 ,so ,moses went out from ,pharao1 and prayed to the ,lord4 #h3ca4 ,and he did according to his word3 and he took away the flies from ,pharao1 and from his servants1 and from his people3 there was not left so much as one4 #h3cb4 ,and ,pharao's heart was hardened1 so that neither this time would he let the people go4 ,exodus ,chapter #i ,the fifth plague is a murrain among the cattle4 ,the sixth1 of boils in men and beasts4 ,the seventh1 of hail4 ,pharao promiseth again to let the people go1 and breaketh his word4 #i3a4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,go in to ,pharao1 and speak to him3 ,thus saith the ,lord ,god of the ,hebrews3 ,let my people go to sacrifice to me4 #i3b4 ,but if thou refuse1 and withhold them still3 #i3c4 ,behold my hand shall be upon thy fields2 and a very grievous murrain upon thy horses1 and asses1 and camels1 and oxen1 and sheep4 #i3d4 ,and the ,lord will make a wonderful difference between the possessions of ,israel and the possessions of the ,egyptians1 that nothing at all shall die of those things that belong to the children of ,israel4 #i3e4 ,and the ,lord appointed a time1 saying3 ,to morrow will the ,lord do this thing in the land4 #i3f4 ,the ,lord therefore did this thing the next day3 and all the beasts of the ,egyptians died1 but of the beasts of the children of ,israel there died not one4 ,all the beasts444 ,that is1 many of all kinds4 #i3g4 ,and ,pharao sent to see2 and there was not any thing dead of that which ,israel possessed4 ,and ,pharao's heart was hardened1 and he did not let the people go4 #i3h4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses and ,aaron3 ,take to you handfuls of ashes out of the chimney1 and let ,moses sprinkle it in the air in the presence of ,pharao4 #i3i4 ,and be there dust upon all the land of ,egypt3 for there shall be boils and swelling blains both in men and beasts1 in the whole land of ,egypt4 #i3aj4 ,and they took ashes out of the chimney1 and stood before ,pharao1 and ,moses sprinkled it in the air2 and there came boils with swelling blains in men and beasts4 #i3aa4 ,neither could the magicians stand before ,moses1 for the boils that were upon them1 and in all the land of ,egypt4 #i3ab4 ,and the ,lord hardened ,pharao's heart1 and he hearkened not unto them1 as the ,lord had spoken to ,moses4 ,hardened1 etc444 ,see the annotations above1 chap4 #d4ba1 chap4 #g4c1 and chap4 #h4ae4 #i3ac4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,arise in the morning1 and stand before ,pharao1 and thou shalt say to him3 ,thus saith the ,lord1 the ,god of the ,hebrews3 ,let my people go to sacrifice to me4 #i3ad4 ,for ,i will at this time send all my plagues upon thy heart1 and upon thy servants1 and upon thy people2 that thou mayst know that there is none like me in all the earth4 #i3ae4 ,for now ,i will stretch out my hand to strike thee1 and thy people1 with pestilence1 and thou shalt perish from the earth4 #i3af4 ,and therefore have ,i raised thee1 that ,i may shew my power in thee1 and my name may be spoken of throughout all the earth4 #i3ag4 ,dost thou yet hold back my people2 and wilt thou not let them go8 #i3ah3 ,behold ,i will cause it to rain to morrow at this same hour1 an exceeding great hail2 such as hath not been in ,egypt from the day that it was founded1 until this present time4 #i3ai4 ,send therefore now presently1 and gather together thy cattle1 and all that thou hast in the field2 for men and beasts1 and all things that shall be found abroad1 and not gathered together out of the fields which the hail shall fall upon1 shall die4 #i3bj4 ,he that feared the word of the ,lord among ,pharao's servants1 made his servants and his cattle flee into houses3 #i3ba4 ,but he that regarded not the word of the ,lord1 left his servants1 and his cattle in the fields4 #i3bb4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,stretch forth thy hand towards heaven1 that there may be hail in the whole land of ,egypt upon men1 and upon beasts1 and upon every herb of the field in the land of ,egypt4 #i3bc4 ,and ,moses stretched forth his rod towards heaven1 and the ,lord sent thunder and hail1 and lightnings running along the ground3 and the ,lord rained hail upon the land of ,egypt4 #i3bd4 ,and the hail and fire mixt with it drove on together3 and it was of so great bigness1 as never before was seen in the whole land of ,egypt since that nation was founded4 #i3be4 ,and the hail destroyed through all the land of ,egypt all things that were in the fields1 both man and beast3 and the hail smote every herb of the field1 and it broke every tree of the country4 #i3bf4 ,only in the land of ,gessen1 where the children of ,israel were1 the hail fell not4 #i3bg4 ,and ,pharao sent and called ,moses and ,aaron1 saying to them3 ,i have sinned this time also1 the ,lord is just3 ,i and my people1 are wicked4 #i3bh4 ,pray ye to the ,lord that the thunderings of ,god and the hail may cease3 that ,i may let you go1 and that ye may stay here no longer4 #i3bi4 ,moses said3 ,as soon as ,i am gone out of the city1 ,i will stretch forth my hands to the ,lord1 and the thunders shall cease1 and the hail shall be no more3 that thou mayst know that the earth is the ,lord's3 #i3cj4 ,but ,i know that neither thou1 nor thy servants do yet fear the ,lord ,god4 #i3ca4 ,the flax therefore1 and the barley were hurt1 because the barley was green1 and the flax was now bolled2 #i3cb4 ,but the wheat1 and other winter corn were not hurt1 because they were lateward4 #i3cc4 ,and when ,moses was gone from ,pharao out of the city1 he stretched forth his hands to the ,lord3 and the thunders and the hail ceased1 neither did there drop any more rain upon the earth4 #i3cd4 ,and ,pharao seeing that the rain1 and the hail1 and the thunders were ceased1 increased his sin3 #i3ce4 ,and his heart was hardened1 and the heart of his servants1 and it was made exceeding hard3 neither did he let the children of ,israel go1 as the ,lord had commanded by the hand of ,moses4 ,exodus ,chapter #aj ,the eighth plague of the locusts4 ,the ninth1 of darkness3 ,pharao is still hardened4 #aj3a4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,go in to ,pharao2 for ,i have hardened his heart1 and the heart of his servants3 that ,i may work these my signs in him1 #aj3b4 ,and thou mayst tell in the ears of thy sons1 and of thy grandsons1 how often ,i have plagued the ,egyptians1 and wrought my signs amongst them3 and you may know that ,i am the ,lord4 #aj3c4 ,therefore ,moses and ,aaron went in to ,pharao1 and said to him3 ,thus saith the ,lord ,god of the ,hebrews3 ,how long refusest thou to submit to me8 let my people go1 to sacrifice to me4 #aj3d4 ,but if thou resist1 and wilt not let them go1 behold ,i will bring in to-morrow the locusts into thy coasts2 #aj3e4 ,to cover the face of the earth1 that nothing thereof may appear1 but that which the hail hath left may be eaten3 for they shall feed upon all the trees that spring in the fields4 #aj3f4 ,and they shall fill thy houses1 and the houses of thy servants1 and of all the ,egyptians3 such a number as thy fathers have not seen1 nor thy grandfathers1 from the time they were first upon the earth1 until this present day4 ,and he turned himself away1 and went forth from ,pharao4 #aj3g4 ,and ,pharao's servants said to him3 ,how long shall we endure this scandal8 ,iet the men go to sacrifice to the ,lord their ,god4 ,dost thou not see that ,egypt is undone8 #aj3h4 ,and they called back ,moses1 and ,aaron1 to ,pharao2 and he said to them3 ,go1 sacrifice to the ,lord your ,god3 who are they that shall go8 #aj3i4 ,moses said3 ,we will go with our young and old1 with our sons and daughters1 with our sheep and herds3 for it is the solemnity of the ,lord our ,god4 #aj3aj4 ,and ,pharao answered3 ,so be the ,lord with you1 as ,i shall let you and your children go3 who can doubt but that you intend some great evil8 #aj3aa4 ,it shall not be so1 but go ye men only1 and sacrifice to the ,lord3 for this yourselves also desired4 ,and immediately they were cast out from ,pharao's presence4 #aj3ab4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,stretch forth thy hand upon the land of ,egypt unto the locust1 that it come upon it1 and devour every herb that is left after the hail4 #aj3ac4 ,and ,moses stretched forth his rod upon the land of ,egypt3 and the ,lord brought a burning wind all that day1 and night2 and when it was morning1 the burning wind raised the locusts4 #aj3ad4 ,and they came up over the whole land of ,egypt2 and rested in all the coasts of the ,egyptians1 innumerable1 the like as had not been before that time1 nor shall be hereafter4 #aj3ae4 ,and they covered the whole face of the earth1 wasting all things4 ,and the grass of the earth was devoured1 and what fruits soever were on the trees1 which the hail had left2 and there remained not any thing that was green on the trees1 or in the herbs of the earth1 in all ,egypt4 #aj3af4 ,wherefore ,pharao in haste called ,moses and ,aaron1 and said to them3 ,i have sinned against the ,lord your ,god1 and against you4 #aj3ag4 ,but now forgive me my sin this time also1 and pray to the ,lord your ,god1 that he take away from me this death4 #aj3ah3 ,and ,moses going forth from the presence of ,pharao1 prayed to the ,lord3 #aj3ai4 ,and he made a very strong wind to blow from the west1 and it took the locusts and cast them into the ,red ,sea3 there remained not so much as one in all the coasts of ,egypt4 #aj3bj4 ,and the ,lord hardened ,pharao's heart1 neither did he let the children of ,israel go4 #aj3ba4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,stretch out thy hand towards heaven3 and may there be darkness upon the land of ,egypt so thick that it may be felt4 ,darkness upon the land of ,egypt1 so thick that it may be felt444 ,by means of the gross exhalations1 which were to cause and accompany the darkness4 #aj3bb4 ,and ,moses stretched forth his hand towards heaven3 and there came horrible darkness in all the land of ,egypt for three days4 #aj3bc4 ,no man saw his brother1 nor moved himself out of the place where he was3 but wheresoever the children of ,israel dwelt1 there was light4 #aj3bd4 ,and ,pharao called ,moses and ,aaron1 and said to them3 ,go1 sacrifice to the ,lord3 let your sheep only1 and herds remain1 let your children go with you4 #aj3be4 ,moses said3 ,thou shalt give us also sacrifices and burnt- offerings1 to the ,lord our ,god4 #aj3bf4 ,all the flocks shall go with us2 there shall not a hoof remain of them3 for they are necessary for the service of the ,lord our ,god3 especially as we know not what must be offered1 till we come to the very place4 #aj3bg4 ,and the ,lord hardened ,pharao's heart1 and he would not let them go4 #aj3bh4 ,and ,pharao said to ,moses3 ,get thee from me1 and beware thou see not my face any more3 in what day soever thou shalt come in my sight1 thou shalt die4 #aj3bi4 ,moses answered3 ,so shall it be as thou hast spoken1 ,i will not see thy face anymore4 ,exodus ,chapter #aa ,pharao and his people are threatened with the death of their firstborn4 #aa3a4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,yet one plague more will ,i bring upon ,pharao and ,egypt1 and after that he shall let you go1 and thrust you out4 #aa3b4 ,therefore thou shalt tell all the people1 that every man ask of his friend1 and every woman of her neighbour1 vessels of silver and of gold4 #aa3c4 ,and the ,lord will give favour to his people in the sight of the ,egyptians4 ,and ,moses was a very great man in the land of ,egypt1 in the sight of ,pharao's servants1 and of all the people4 #aa3d4 ,and he said3 ,thus saith the ,lord3 ,at midnight ,i will enter into ,egypt3 #aa3e4 ,and every firstborn in the land of the ,egyptians shall die1 from the firstborn of ,pharao who sitteth on his throne1 even to the firstborn of the handmaid that is at the mill1 and all the firstborn of beasts4 #aa3f4 ,and there shall be a great cry in all the land of ,egypt1 such as neither hath been before1 nor shall be hereafter4 #aa3g4 ,but with all the children of ,israel there shall not a dog make the least noise1 from man even to beast2 that you may know how wonderful a difference the ,lord maketh between the ,egyptians and ,israel4 #aa3h4 ,and all these thy servants shall come down to me1 and shall worship me1 saying3 ,go forth thou1 and all the people that is under thee3 after that we will go out4 #aa3i4 ,and he went out from ,pharao exceeding angry4 ,but the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,pharao will not hear you1 that many signs may be done in the land of ,egypt4 #aa3aj4 ,and ,moses and ,aaron did all the wonders that are written1 before ,pharao4 ,and the ,lord hardened ,pharao's heart1 neither did he let the children of ,israel go out of his land4 ,the ,lord hardened1 etc444 ,see the annotations above1 chap4 #d4ba1 and chap4 #g4c4 ,exodus ,chapter #ab ,the manner of preparing1 and eating the paschal lamb3 the firstborn of ,egypt are all slain3 the ,israelites depart4 #ab3a4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses and ,aaron in the land of ,egypt3 #ab3b4 ,this month shall be to you the beginning of months2 it shall be the first in the months of the year4 #ab3c4 ,speak ye to the whole assembly of the children of ,israel1 and say to them3 ,on the tenth day of this month let every man take a lamb by their families and houses4 #ab3d4 ,but if the number be less than may suffice to eat the lamb1 he shall take unto him his neighbour that joineth to his house1 according to the number of souls which may be enough to eat the lamb4 #ab3e4 ,and it shall be a lamb without blemish1 a male1 of one year2 according to which rite also you shall take a kid4 ,a kid444 ,the phase might be performed1 either with a lamb or with a kid3 and all the same rites and ceremonies were to be used with the one as with the other4 #ab3f4 ,and you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month2 and the whole multitude of the children of ,israel shall sacrifice it in the evening4 #ab3g4 ,and they shall take of the blood thereof1 and put it upon both the side posts1 and on the upper door posts of the houses1 wherein they shall eat it4 #ab3h4 ,and they shall eat the flesh that night roasted at the fire1 and unleavened bread with wild lettuce4 #ab3i4 ,you shall not eat thereof any thing raw1 nor boiled in water1 but only roasted at the fire2 you shall eat the head with the feet and entrails thereof4 #ab3aj4 ,neither shall there remain any thing of it until morning4 ,if there be any thing left1 you shall burn it with fire4 #ab3aa4 ,and thus you shall eat it3 you shall gird your reins1 and you shall have shoes on your feet1 holding staves in your hands1 and you shall eat in haste2 for it is the ,phase 7that is the ,passage7 of the ,lord4 #ab3ab4 ,and ,i will pass through the land of ,egypt that night1 and will kill every firstborn in the land of ,egypt1 both man and beast3 and against all the gods of ,egypt ,i will execute judgments2 ,i am the ,lord4 #ab3ac4 ,and the blood shall be unto you for a sign in the houses where you shall be2 and ,i shall see the blood1 and shall pass over you2 and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you1 when ,i shall strike the land of ,egypt4 #ab3ad4 ,and this day shall be for a memorial to you2 and you shall keep it a feast to the ,lord in your generations1 with an everlasting observance4 #ab3ae4 ,seven days shall you eat unleavened bread3 in the first day there shall be no leaven in your houses2 whosoever shall eat any thing leavened1 from the first day until the seventh day1 that soul shall perish out of ,israel4 #ab3af4 ,the first day shall be holy and solemn1 and the seventh day shall be kept with the like solemnity3 you shall do no work in them1 except those things that belong to eating4 #ab3ag4 ,and you shall observe the feast of the unleavened bread3 for in this same day ,i will bring forth your army out of the land of ,egypt1 and you shall keep this day in your generations by a perpetual observance4 #ab3ah3 ,the first month1 the fourteenth day of the month1 in the evening1 you shall eat unleavened bread1 until the one and twentieth day of the same month1 in the evening4 ,unleavened bread444 ,by this it appears1 that our ,saviour made use of unleavened bread1 in the institution of the blessed sacrament1 which was on the evening of the paschal solemnity1 at which time there was no leavened bread to be found in ,israel4 #ab3ai4 ,seven days there shall not be found any leaven in your houses3 he that shall eat leavened bread1 his soul shall perish out of the assembly of ,israel1 whether he be a stranger or born in the land4 #ab3bj4 ,you shall not eat any thing leavened3 in all your habitations you shall eat unleavened bread4 #ab3ba4 ,and ,moses called all the ancients of the children of ,israel1 and said to them3 ,go take a lamb by your families1 and sacrifice the ,phase4 #ab3bb4 ,and dip a bunch of hyssop in the blood that is at the door1 and sprinkle the transom of the door therewith1 and both the door cheeks3 let none of you go out of the door of his house till morning4 ,sprinkle1 etc444 ,this sprinkling the doors of the ,israelites with the blood of the paschal lamb1 in order to their being delivered from the sword of the destroying angel1 was a lively figure of our redemption by the blood of ,christ4 #ab3bc4 ,for the ,lord will pass through striking the ,egyptians3 and when he shall see the blood on the transom1 and on both the posts1 he will pass over the door of the house1 and not suffer the destroyer to come into your houses and to hurt you4 #ab3bd4 ,thou shalt keep this thing as a law for thee and thy children for ever4 #ab3be4 ,and when you have entered into the land which the ,lord will give you1 as he hath promised1 you shall observe these ceremonies4 #ab3bf4 ,and when your children shall say to you3 ,what is the meaning of this service8 #ab3bg4 ,you shall say to them3 ,it is the victim of the passage of the ,lord1 when he passed over the houses of the children of ,israel in ,egypt1 striking the ,egyptians1 and saving our houses4 ,and the people bowing themselves1 adored4 #ab3bh4 ,and the children of ,israel going forth1 did as the ,lord had commanded ,moses and ,aaron4 #ab3bi4 ,and it came to pass at midnight1 the ,lord slew every firstborn in the land of ,egypt1 from the firstborn of ,pharao1 who sat on his throne1 unto the firstborn of the captive woman that was in the prison1 and all the firstborn of cattle4 #ab3cj4 ,and ,pharao arose in the night1 and all his servants1 and all ,egypt3 and there arose a great cry in ,egypt2 for there was not a house wherein there lay not one dead4 #ab3ca4 ,and ,pharao calling ,moses and ,aaron1 in the night1 said3 ,arise and go forth from among my people1 you and the children of ,israel3 go1 sacrifice to the ,lord as you say4 #ab3cb4 ,your sheep and herds take along with you1 as you demanded1 and departing bless me4 #ab3cc4 ,and the ,egyptians pressed the people to go forth out of the land speedily1 saying3 ,we shall all die4 #ab3cd4 ,the people therefore took dough before it was leavened2 and tying it in their cloaks1 put it on their shoulders4 #ab3ce4 ,and the children of ,israel did as ,moses had commanded3 and they asked of the ,egyptians vessels of silver and gold1 and very much raiment4 #ab3cf4 ,and the ,lord gave favour to the people in the sight of the ,egyptians1 so that they lent unto them3 and they stripped the ,egyptians4 #ab3cg4 ,and the children of ,israel set forward from ,ramesse to ,socoth1 being about six hundred thousand men on foot1 beside children4 #ab3ch4 ,and a mixed multitude1 without number1 went up also with them1 sheep and herds1 and beasts of divers kinds1 exceeding many4 #ab3ci4 ,and they baked the meal1 which a little before they had brought out of ,egypt in dough3 and they made hearth cakes unleavened3 for it could not be leavened1 the ,egyptians pressing them to depart1 and not suffering them to make any stay2 neither did they think of preparing any meat4 #ab3dj4 ,and the abode of the children of ,israel that they made in ,egypt1 was four hundred and thirty years4 #ab3da4 ,which being expired1 the same day all the army of the ,lord went forth out of the land of ,egypt4 #ab3db4 ,this is the observable night of the ,lord1 when he brought them forth out of the land of ,egypt3 this night all the children of ,israel must observe in their generations4 #ab3dc4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses and ,aaron3 ,this is the service of the ,phase2 no foreigner shall eat of it4 #ab3dd4 ,but every bought servant shall be circumcised1 and so shall eat4 #ab3de4 ,the stranger and the hireling shall not eat thereof4 #ab3df4 ,in one house shall it be eaten1 neither shall you carry forth of the flesh thereof out of the house1 neither shall you break a bone thereof4 #ab3dg4 ,all the assembly of the children of ,israel shall keep it4 #ab3dh4 ,and if any stranger be willing to dwell among you1 and to keep the ,phase of the ,lord1 all his males shall first be circumcised1 and then shall he celebrate it according to the manner3 and he shall be as he that is born in the land3 but if any man be uncircumcised1 he shall not eat thereof4 #ab3di4 ,the same law shall be to him that is born in the land1 and to the proselyte that sojourneth with you4 #ab3ej4 ,and all the children of ,israel did as the ,lord had commanded ,moses and ,aaron4 #ab3ea4 ,and the same day the ,lord brought forth the children of ,israel out of the land of ,egypt by their companies4 ,exodus ,chapter #ac ,the paschal solemnity is to be observed2 and the firstborn are to be consecrated to ,god4 ,the people are conducted through the desert by a pillar of fire in the night1 and a cloud in the day4 #ac3a4 ,and the ,lord spoke to ,moses1 saying3 #ac3b4 ,sanctify unto me every firstborn that openeth the womb among the children of ,israel1 as well of men as of beasts3 for they are all mine4 ,sanctify unto me every firstborn444 ,sanctification in this place means that the firstborn males of the ,hebrews should be deputed to the ministry in the divine worship2 and the firstborn of beasts to be given for a sacrifice4 #ac3c4 ,and ,moses said to the people3 ,remember this day in which you came forth out of ,egypt1 and out of the house of bondage1 for with a strong hand hath the ,lord brought you forth out of this place3 that you eat no leavened bread4 #ac3d4 ,this day you go forth in the month of new corn4 #ac3e4 ,and when the ,lord shall have brought thee into the land of the ,chanaanite1 and the ,hethite1 and the ,amorrhite1 and the ,hevite1 and the ,jebusite1 which he swore to thy fathers that he would give thee1 a land that floweth with milk and honey1 thou shalt celebrate this manner of sacred rites in this month4 #ac3f4 ,seven days shalt thou eat unleavened bread3 and on the seventh day shall be the solemnity of the ,lord4 #ac3g4 ,unleavened bread shall you eat seven days3 there shall not be seen any thing leavened with thee1 nor in all thy coasts4 #ac3h4 ,and thou shalt tell thy son in that day1 saying3 ,this is what the ,lord did to me when ,i came forth out of ,egypt4 #ac3i4 ,and it shall be as a sign in thy hand1 and as a memorial before thy eyes2 and that the law of the ,lord be always in thy mouth1 for with a strong hand the ,lord hath brought thee out of the land of ,egypt4 #ac3aj4 ,thou shalt keep this observance at the set time from days to days4 #ac3aa4 ,and when the ,lord shall have brought thee into the land of the ,chanaanite1 as he swore to thee and thy fathers1 and shall give it thee3 #ac3ab4 ,thou shalt set apart all that openeth the womb for the ,lord1 and all that is first brought forth of thy cattle3 whatsoever thou shalt have of the male sex1 thou shalt consecrate to the ,lord4 #ac3ac4 ,the firstborn of an ass thou shalt change for a sheep3 and if thou do not redeem it1 thou shalt kill it4 ,and every firstborn of men thou shalt redeem with a price4 #ac3ad4 ,and when thy son shall ask thee to morrow1 saying3 ,what is this8 thou shalt answer him3 ,with a strong hand did the ,lord bring us forth out of the land of ,egypt1 out of the house of bondage4 #ac3ae4 ,for when ,pharao was hardened1 and would not let us go1 the ,lord slew every firstborn in the land of ,egypt1 from the firstborn of man to the firstborn of beasts3 therefore ,i sacrifice to the ,lord all that openeth the womb of the male sex1 and all the firstborn of my sons ,i redeem4 #ac3af4 ,and it shall be as a sign in thy hand1 and as a thing hung between thy eyes1 for a remembrance3 because the ,lord hath brought us forth out of ,egypt by a strong hand4 #ac3ag4 ,and when ,pharao had sent out the people1 the ,lord led them not by the way of the land of the ,philistines1 which is near2 thinking lest perhaps they would repent1 if they should see wars arise against them1 and would return into ,egypt4 #ac3ah3 ,but he led them about by the way of the desert1 which is by the ,red ,sea3 and the children of ,israel went up armed out of the land of ,egypt4 #ac3ai4 ,and ,moses took ,joseph's bones with him3 because he had adjured the children of ,israel1 saying3 ,god shall visit you1 carry out my bones from hence with you4 #ac3bj4 ,and marching from ,socoth1 they encamped in ,etham1 in the utmost coasts of the wilderness4 #ac3ba4 ,and the ,lord went before them to shew the way1 by day in a pillar of a cloud1 and by night in a pillar of fire2 that he might be the guide of their journey at both times4 #ac3bb4 ,there never failed the pillar of the cloud by day1 nor the pillar of fire by night1 before the people4 ,exodus ,chapter #ad ,pharao pursueth the children of ,israel4 ,they murmur against ,moses1 but are encouraged by him1 and pass through the ,red ,sea4 ,pharao and his army following them are drowned4 #ad3a4 ,and the ,lord spoke to ,moses1 saying3 #ad3b4 ,speak to the children of ,israel3 ,let them turn and encamp over against ,phihahiroth1 which is between ,magdal and the sea over against ,beelsephon3 you shall encamp before it upon the sea4 #ad3c4 ,and ,pharao will say of the children of ,israel3 ,they are straitened in the land1 the desert hath shut them in4 #ad3d4 ,and ,i shall harden his heart and he will pursue you3 and ,i shall be glorified in ,pharao1 and in all his army3 and the ,egyptians shall know that ,i am the ,lord4 ,and they did so4 #ad3e4 ,and it was told the king of the ,egyptians that the people was fled3 and the heart of ,pharao and of his servants was changed with regard to the people1 and they said3 ,what meant we to do1 that we let ,israel go from serving us8 #ad3f4 ,so he made ready his chariot1 and took all his people with him4 #ad3g4 ,and he took six hundred chosen chariots1 and all the chariots that were in ,egypt3 and the captains of the whole army4 #ad3h4 ,and the ,lord hardened the heart of ,pharao1 king of ,egypt1 and he pursued the children of ,israel2 but they were gone forth in a mighty hand4 #ad3i4 ,and when the ,egyptians followed the steps of them who were gone before1 they found them encamped at the sea side3 all ,pharao's horse and chariots and the whole army were in ,phihahiroth1 before ,beelsephon4 #ad3aj4 ,and when ,pharao drew near1 the children of ,israel lifting up their eyes1 saw the ,egyptians behind them3 and they feared exceedingly1 and cried to the ,lord4 #ad3aa4 ,and they said to ,moses3 ,perhaps there were no graves in ,egypt1 therefore thou hast brought us to die in the wilderness3 why wouldst thou do this1 to lead us out of ,egypt8 #ad3ab4 ,is not this the word that we spoke to thee in ,egypt1 saying3 ,depart from us1 that we may serve the ,egyptians8 for it was much better to serve them1 than to die in the wilderness4 #ad3ac4 ,and ,moses said to the people3 ,fear not3 stand1 and see the great wonders of the ,lord1 which he will do this day2 for the ,egyptians1 whom you see now1 you shall see no more for ever4 #ad3ad4 ,the ,lord will fight for you1 and you shall hold your peace4 #ad3ae4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,why criest thou to me8 ,speak to the children of ,israel to go forward4 #ad3af4 ,but lift thou up thy rod1 and stretch forth thy hand over the sea1 and divide it3 that the children of ,israel may go through the midst of the sea on dry ground4 #ad3ag4 ,and ,i will harden the heart of the ,egyptians to pursue you3 and ,i will be glorified in ,pharao1 and in all his host1 and in his chariots and in his horsemen4 #ad3ah3 ,and the ,egyptians shall know that ,i am the ,lord1 when ,i shall be glorified in ,pharao1 and in his chariots1 and in his horsemen4 #ad3ai4 ,and the angel of ,god1 who went before the camp of ,israel1 removing1 went behind them3 and together with him the pillar of the cloud1 leaving the forepart1 #ad3bj4 ,stood behind1 between the ,egyptians' camp and the camp of ,israel3 and it was a dark cloud1 and enlightening the night1 so that they could not come at one another all the night4 ,a dark cloud1 and enlightening the night444 ,it was a dark cloud to the ,egyptians2 but enlightened the night to the ,israelites by giving them a great light4 #ad3ba4 ,and when ,moses had stretched forth his hand over the sea1 the ,lord took it away by a strong and burning wind blowing all the night1 and turned it into dry ground3 and the water was divided4 #ad3bb4 ,and the children of ,israel went in through the midst of the sea dried up2 for the water was as a wall on their right hand and on their left4 #ad3bc4 ,and the ,egyptians pursuing went in after them1 and all ,pharao's horses1 his chariots and horsemen1 through the midst of the sea4 #ad3bd4 ,and now the morning watch was come1 and behold the ,lord looking upon the ,egyptian army through the pillar of fire and of the cloud1 slew their host4 #ad3be4 ,and overthrew the wheels of the chariots1 and they were carried into the deep4 ,and the ,egyptians said3 ,let us flee from ,israel2 for the ,lord fighteth for them against us4 #ad3bf4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,stretch forth thy hand over the sea1 that the waters may come again upon the ,egyptians1 upon their chariots and horsemen4 #ad3bg4 ,and when ,moses had stretched forth his hand towards the sea1 it returned at the first break of day to the former place3 and as the ,egyptians were fleeing away1 the waters came upon them1 and the ,lord shut them up in the middle of the waves4 #ad3bh4 ,and the waters returned1 and covered the chariots and the horsemen of all the army of ,pharao1 who had come into the sea after them1 neither did there so much as one of them remain4 #ad3bi4 ,but the children of ,israel marched through the midst of the sea upon dry land1 and the waters were to them as a wall on the right hand and on the left3 #ad3cj4 ,and the ,lord delivered ,israel in that day out of the hands of the ,egyptians4 #ad3ca4 ,and they saw the ,egyptians dead upon the sea shore1 and the mighty hand that the ,lord had used against them3 and the people feared the ,lord1 and they believed the ,lord1 and ,moses his servant4 ,exodus ,chapter #ae ,the canticle of ,moses4 ,the bitter waters of ,mara are made sweet4 #ae3a4 ,then ,moses and the children of ,israel sung this canticle to the ,lord1 and said3 ,let us sing to the ,lord3 for he is gloriously magnified1 the horse and the rider he hath thrown into the sea4 #ae3b4 ,the ,lord is my strength and my praise1 and he is become salvation to me3 he is my ,god1 and ,i will glorify him3 the ,god of my father1 and ,i will exalt him4 #ae3c4 ,the ,lord is as a man of war1 ,almighty is his name4 #ae3d4 ,pharao's chariots and his army he hath cast into the sea3 his chosen captains are drowned in the ,red ,sea4 #ae3e4 ,the depths have covered them1 they are sunk to the bottom like a stone4 #ae3f4 ,thy right hand1 ,o ,lord1 is magnified in strength3 thy right hand1 ,o ,lord1 hath slain the enemy4 #ae3g4 ,and in the multitude of thy glory thou hast put down thy adversaries3 thou hast sent thy wrath1 which hath devoured them like stubble4 #ae3h4 ,and with the blast of thy anger the waters were gathered together3 the flowing water stood1 the depths were gathered together in the midst of the sea4 #ae3i4 ,the enemy said3 ,i will pursue and overtake1 ,i will divide the spoils1 my soul shall have its fill3 ,i will draw my sword1 my hand shall slay them4 #ae3aj4 ,thy wind blew and the sea covered them3 they sunk as lead in the mighty waters4 #ae3aa4 ,who is like to thee1 among the strong1 ,o ,lord8 who is like to thee1 glorious in holiness1 terrible and praise-worthy1 doing wonders8 #ae3ab4 ,thou stretchedst forth thy hand1 and the earth swallowed them4 #ae3ac4 ,in thy mercy thou hast been a leader to the people which thou hast redeemed3 and in thy strength thou hast carried them to thy holy habitation4 #ae3ad4 ,nations rose up1 and were angry3 sorrows took hold on the inhabitants of ,philisthiim4 #ae3ae4 ,then were the princes of ,edom troubled1 trembling seized on the stout men of ,moab3 all the inhabitants of ,chanaan became stiff4 #ae3af4 ,let fear and dread fall upon them1 in the greatness of thy arm3 let them become immoveable as a stone1 until thy people1 ,o ,lord1 pass by3 until this thy people pass by1 which thou hast possessed4 #ae3ag4 ,thou shalt bring them in1 and plant them in the mountain of thy inheritance1 in thy most firm habitation1 which thou hast made1 ,o ,lord2 thy sanctuary1 ,o ,lord1 which thy hands have established4 #ae3ah3 ,the ,lord shall reign for ever and ever4 #ae3ai4 ,for ,pharao went in on horseback with his chariots and horsemen into the sea3 and the ,lord brought back upon them the waters of the sea3 but the children of ,israel walked on dry ground in the midst thereof4 #ae3bj4 ,so ,mary the prophetess1 the sister of ,aaron1 took a timbrel in her hand3 and all the women went forth after her with timbrels and with dances4 #ae3ba4 ,and she began the song to them1 saying3 ,let us sing to the ,lord1 for he is gloriously magnified1 the horse and his rider he hath thrown into the sea4 #ae3bb4 ,and ,moses brought ,israel from the ,red ,sea1 and they went forth into the wilderness of ,sur3 and they marched three days through the wilderness1 and found no water4 #ae3bc4 ,and they came into ,mara1 and they could not drink the waters of ,mara because they were bitter3 whereupon he gave a name also agreeable to the place1 calling it ,mara1 that is1 bitterness4 #ae3bd4 ,and the people murmured against ,moses1 saying3 ,what shall we drink8 #ae3be4 ,but he cried to the ,lord1 and he shewed him a tree1 which when he had cast into the waters1 they were turned into sweetness4 ,there he appointed him ordinances1 and judgments1 and there he proved him1 #ae3bf4 ,saying3 ,if thou wilt hear the voice of the ,lord thy ,god1 and do what is right before him1 and obey his commandments1 and keep all his precepts1 none of the evils that ,i laid upon ,egypt1 will ,i bring upon thee3 for ,i am the ,lord thy healer4 #ae3bg4 ,and the children of ,israel came into ,elim1 where there were twelve fountains of water1 and seventy palm trees3 and they encamped by the waters4 ,exodus ,chapter #af ,the people murmur for want of meat3 ,god giveth them quails and manna4 #af3a4 ,and they set forward from ,elim1 and all the multitude of the children of ,israel came into the desert of ,sin1 which is between ,elim and ,sinai3 the fifteenth day of the second month1 after they came out of the land of ,egypt4 #af3b4 ,and all the congregation of the children of ,israel murmured against ,moses and ,aaron in the wilderness4 #af3c4 ,and the children of ,israel said to them3 ,would to ,god we had died by the hand of the ,lord in the land of ,egypt1 when we sat over the fleshpots1 and ate bread to the full3 ,why have you brought us into this desert1 that you might destroy all the multitude with famine8 #af3d4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,behold ,i will rain bread from heaven for you2 let the people go forth1 and gather what is sufficient for every day3 that ,i may prove them whether they will walk in my law1 or not4 #af3e4 ,but the sixth day let them provide for to bring in3 and let it be double to that they were wont to gather every day4 #af3f4 ,and ,moses and ,aaron said to the children of ,israel ,in the evening you shall know that the ,lord hath brought you forth out of the land of ,egypt3 #af3g4 ,and in the morning you shall see the glory of the ,lord3 for he hath heard your murmuring against the ,lord3 but as for us1 what are we1 that you mutter against us8 #af3h4 ,and ,moses said3 ,in the evening the ,lord will give you flesh to eat1 and in the morning bread to the full3 for he hath heard your murmurings1 with which you have murmured against him1 for what are we8 your murmuring is not against us1 but against the ,lord4 #af3i4 ,moses also said to ,aaron3 ,say to the whole congregation of the children of ,israel3 ,come before the ,lord2 for he hath heard your murmuring4 #af3aj4 ,and when ,aaron spoke to all the assembly of the children of ,israel1 they looked towards the wilderness2 and behold the glory of the ,lord appeared in a cloud4 #af3aa4 ,and the ,lord spoke to ,moses1 saying3 #af3ab4 ,i have heard the murmuring of the children of ,israel1 say to them3 ,in the evening you shall eat flesh1 and in the morning you shall have your fill of bread2 and you shall know that ,i am the ,lord your ,god4 #af3ac4 ,so it came to pass in the evening1 that quails coming up1 covered the camp3 and in the morning a dew lay round about the camp4 #af3ad4 ,and when it had covered the face of the earth1 it appeared in the wilderness small1 and as it were beaten with a pestle1 like unto the hoar frost on the ground4 #af3ae4 ,and when the children of ,israel saw it1 they said one to another3 ,manhu6 which signifieth3 ,what is this6 for they knew not what it was4 ,and ,moses said to them3 ,this is the bread which the ,lord hath given you to eat4 #af3af4 ,this is the word that the ,lord hath commanded3 ,let every one gather of it as much as is enough to eat2 a gomor for every man1 according to the number of your souls that dwell in a tent1 so shall you take of it4 #af3ag4 ,and the children of ,israel did so3 and they gathered1 one more1 another less4 #af3ah3 ,and they measured by the measure of a gomor3 neither had he more that had gathered more2 nor did he find less that had provided less3 but every one had gathered1 according to what they were able to eat4 #af3ai4 ,and ,moses said to them3 ,let no man leave thereof till the morning4 #af3bj4 ,and they hearkened not to him1 but some of them left until the morning1 and it began to be full of worms1 and it putrified1 and ,moses was angry with them4 #af3ba4 ,now every one of them gathered in the morning1 as much as might suffice to eat3 and after the sun grew hot1 it melted4 #af3bb4 ,but on the sixth day they gathered twice as much1 that is1 two gomors every man3 and all the rulers of the multitude came1 and told ,moses4 #af3bc4 ,and he said to them3 ,this is what the ,lord hath spoken3 ,to morrow is the rest of the sabbath sanctified to the ,lord4 ,whatsoever work is to be done1 do it2 and the meats that are to be dressed1 dress them2 and whatsoever shall remain1 lay it up until the morning4 #af3bd4 ,and they did so as ,moses had commanded1 and it did not putrify1 neither was there worm found in it4 #af3be4 ,and ,moses said3 ,eat it to day1 because it is the sabbath of the ,lord3 to day it shall not be found in the field4 #af3bf4 ,gather it six days2 but on the seventh day is the sabbath of the ,lord1 therefore it shall not be found4 #af3bg4 ,and the seventh day came2 and some of the people going forth to gather1 found none4 #af3bh4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,how long will you refuse to keep my commandments1 and my law8 #af3bi4 ,see that the ,lord hath given you the sabbath1 and for this reason on the sixth day he giveth you a double provision3 let each man stay at home1 and let none go forth out of his place the seventh day4 #af3cj4 ,and the people kept the sabbath on the seventh day4 #af3ca4 ,and the house of ,israel called the name thereof ,manna3 and it was like coriander seed1 white1 and the taste thereof like to flour with honey4 #af3cb4 ,and ,moses said3 ,this is the word which the ,lord hath commanded3 ,fill a gomor of it1 and let it be kept unto generations to come hereafter2 that they may know the bread1 wherewith ,i fed you in the wilderness when you were brought forth out of the land of ,egypt4 #af3cc4 ,and ,moses said to ,aaron3 ,take a vessel1 and put manna into it1 as much as a gomor can hold2 and lay it up before the ,lord1 to keep unto your generations1 #af3cd4 ,as the ,lord commanded ,moses4 ,and ,aaron put it in the tabernacle to be kept4 #af3ce4 ,and the children of ,israel ate manna forty years1 till they came to a habitable land3 with this meat were they fed1 until they reached the borders of the land of ,chanaan4 #af3cf4 ,now a gomor is the tenth part of an ephi4 ,exodus ,chapter #ag ,the people murmur again for want of drink2 the ,lord giveth them water out of a rock4 ,moses lifting up his hand in prayer1 ,amalec is overcome4 #ag3a4 ,then all the multitude of the children of ,israel setting forward from the desert of ,sin1 by their mansions1 according to the word of the ,lord1 encamped in ,raphidim1 where there was no water for the people to drink4 #ag3b4 ,and they chode with ,moses1 and said3 ,give us water1 that we may drink4 ,and ,moses answered them3 ,why chide you with me8 ,wherefore do you tempt the ,lord8 #ag3c4 ,so the people were thirsty there for want of water1 and murmured against ,moses1 saying3 ,why didst thou make us go forth out of ,egypt1 to kill us and our children1 and our beasts with thirst8 #ag3d4 ,and ,moses cried to the ,lord1 saying3 ,what shall ,i do to this people8 ,yet a little more and they will stone me4 #ag3e4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,go before the people1 and take with thee of the ancients of ,israel3 and take in thy hand the rod wherewith thou didst strike the river1 and go4 #ag3f4 ,behold ,i will stand there before thee1 upon the rock ,horeb1 and thou shalt strike the rock1 and water shall come out of it that the people may drink4 ,moses did so before the ancients of ,israel3 #ag3g4 ,and he called the name of that place ,temptation1 because of the chiding of the children of ,israel1 and for that they tempted the ,lord1 saying3 ,is the ,lord amongst us or not8 #ag3h4 ,and ,amalec came1 and fought against ,israel in ,raphidim4 #ag3i4 ,and ,moses said to ,josue3 ,choose out men2 and go out and fight against ,amalec3 tomorrow ,i will stand on the top of the hill1 having the rod of ,god in my hand4 #ag3aj4 ,josue did as ,moses had spoken1 and he fought against ,amalec2 but ,moses1 and ,aaron1 and ,hur1 went up upon the top of the hill4 #ag3aa4 ,and when ,moses lifted up his hands1 ,israel overcame2 but if he let them down a little1 ,amalec overcame4 #ag3ab4 ,and ,moses's hands were heavy3 so they took a stone1 and put under him1 and he sat on it3 and ,aaron and ,hur stayed up his hands on both sides4 ,and it came to pass1 that his hands were not weary until sunset4 #ag3ac4 ,and ,josue put ,amalec and his people to flight1 by the edge of the sword4 #ag3ad4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,write this for a memorial in a book1 and deliver it to the ears of ,josue2 for ,i will destroy the memory of ,amalec from under heaven4 #ag3ae4 ,and ,moses built an altar2 and called the name thereof1 ,the ,lord1 my exaltation1 saying3 #ag3af4 ,because the hand of the throne of the ,lord1 and the war of the ,lord shall be against ,amalec1 from generation to generation4 ,exodus ,chapter #ah ,jethro bringeth to ,moses his wife and children4 ,his counsel4 #ah3a4 ,and when ,jethro the priest of ,madian1 the kinsman of ,moses1 had heard all the things that ,god had done to ,moses1 and to ,israel his people1 and that the ,lord had brought forth ,israel out of ,egypt3 #ah3b4 ,he took ,sephora1 the wife of ,moses1 whom he had sent back3 #ah3c4 ,and her two sons1 of whom one was called ,gersam3 his father saying1 ,i have been a stranger in a foreign country4 #ah3d4 ,and the other ,eliezer3 ,for the ,god of my father1 said he1 is my helper1 and hath delivered me from the sword of ,pharao4 #ah3e4 ,and ,jethro1 the kinsman of ,moses1 came with his sons1 and his wife to ,moses into the desert1 where he was camped by the mountain of ,god4 #ah3f4 ,and he sent word to ,moses1 saying3 ,i ,jethro1 thy kinsman1 come to thee1 and thy wife1 and thy two sons with her4 #ah3g4 ,and he went out to meet his kinsman1 and worshipped and kissed him3 and they saluted one another with words of peace4 ,and when he was come into the tent1 #ah3h4 ,moses told his kinsman all that the ,lord had done to ,pharao1 and the ,egyptians in favour of ,israel3 and all the labour which had befallen them in the journey1 and that the ,lord had delivered them4 #ah3i4 ,and ,jethro rejoiced for all the good things that the ,lord had done to ,israel1 because he had delivered them out of the hands of the ,egyptians4 #ah3aj4 ,and he said3 ,blessed is the ,lord1 who hath delivered his people out of the hand of ,egypt4 #ah3aa4 ,now ,i know1 that the ,lord is great above all gods2 because they dealt proudly against them4 #ah3ab4 ,so ,jethro1 the kinsman of ,moses1 offered holocausts and sacrifices to ,god3 and ,aaron and all the ancients of ,israel came1 to eat bread with him before ,god4 #ah3ac4 ,and the next day ,moses sat to judge the people1 who stood by ,moses from morning until night4 #ah3ad4 ,and when his kinsman had seen all things that he did among the people1 he said3 ,what is it that thou dost among the people8 ,why sittest thou alone1 and all the people wait from morning till night8 #ah3ae4 ,and ,moses answered him3 ,the people come to me to seek the judgment of ,god8 #ah3af4 ,and when any controversy falleth out among them1 they come to me to judge between them1 and to shew the precepts of ,god1 and his laws4 #ah3ag4 ,but he said3 ,the thing thou dost is not good4 #ah3ah3 ,thou art spent with foolish labour1 both thou1 and this people that is with thee2 the business is above thy strength1 thou alone canst not bear it4 #ah3ai4 ,but hear my words and counsels1 and ,god shall be with thee4 ,be thou to the people in those things that pertain to ,god1 to bring their words to him3 #ah3bj4 ,and to shew the people the ceremonies1 and the manner of worshipping2 and the way wherein they ought to walk1 and the work that they ought to do4 #ah3ba4 ,and provide out of all the people able men1 such as fear ,god1 in whom there is truth1 and that hate avarice1 and appoint of them rulers of thousands1 and of hundreds1 and of fifties1 and of tens1 #ah3bb4 ,who may judge the people at all times3 and when any great matter soever pure1 and most worthy of sanctification4 #cj3cf4 ,and when thou hast beaten all into very small powder1 thou shalt set of it before the tabernacle of the testimony1 in the place where ,i will appear to thee4 ,most holy shall this incense be unto you4 #cj3cg4 ,you shall not make such a composition for your own uses1 because it is holy to the ,lord4 #cj3ch4 ,what man soever shall make the like1 to enjoy the smell thereof1 he shall perish out of his people4 ,exodus ,chapter #ca ,beseleel and ,ooliab are appointed by the ,lord to make the tabernacle1 and the things belonging thereto4 ,the observation of the sabbath day is again commanded4 ,and the ,lord delivereth to ,moses two tables written with the finger of ,god4 #ca3a4 ,and the ,lord spoke to ,moses1 saying3 #ca3b4 ,behold1 ,i have called by name ,beseleel the son of ,uri1 the son of ,hur1 of the tribe of ,juda1 #ca3c4 ,and ,i have filled him with the spirit of ,god1 with wisdom and understanding1 and knowledge in all manner of work1 #ca3d4 ,to devise whatsoever may be artificially made of gold1 and silver1 and brass1 #ca3e4 ,of marble1 and precious stones1 and variety of wood4 #ca3f4 ,and ,i have given him for his companion ,ooliab1 the son of ,achisamech1 of the tribe of ,dan4 ,and ,i have put wisdom in the heart of every skilful man1 that they may make all things which ,i have commanded thee1 #ca3g4 ,the tabernacle of the covenant1 and the ark of the testimony1 and the propitiatory1 that is over it1 and all the vessels of the tabernacle1 #ca3h4 ,and the table and the vessels thereof1 the most pure candlestick with the vessels thereof1 and the altars of incense1 #ca3i4 ,and of holocaust1 and all their vessels1 the laver with its foot1 #ca3aj4 ,the holy vestments in the ministry for ,aaron the priest1 and for his sons1 that they may execute their office1 about the sacred things3 #ca3aa4 ,the oil of unction1 and the incense of spices in the sanctuary1 all things which ,i have commanded thee1 shall they make4 #ca3ab4 ,and the ,lord spoke to ,moses1 saying3 #ca3ac4 ,speak to the children of ,israel1 and thou shalt say to them3 ,see that you keep my sabbath2 because it is a sign between me and you in your generations that you may know that ,i am the ,lord1 who sanctify you4 #ca3ad4 keep you my sabbath3 for it is holy unto you3 he that shall profane it1 shall be put to death3 he that shall do any work in it1 his soul shall perish out of the midst of his people4 #ca3ae4 ,six days shall you do work3 in the seventh day is the sabbath1 the rest holy to the ,lord4 ,every one that shall do any work on this day1 shall die4 #ca3af4 ,let the children of ,israel keep the sabbath1 and celebrate it in their generations4 ,it is an everlasting covenant4 #ca3ag4 ,between me and the children of ,israel1 and a perpetual sign4 ,for in six days the ,lord made heaven and earth1 and in the seventh he ceased from work4 #ca3ah4 ,and the ,lord1 when he had ended these words in ,mount ,sinai1 gave to ,moses two stone tables of testimony1 written with the finger of ,god4 ,exodus ,chapter #cb ,the people fall into idolatry4 ,moses prayeth for them4 ,he breaketh the tables3 destroyeth the idol3 blameth ,aaron1 and causeth many of the idolaters to be slain4 #cb3a4 ,and the people seeing that ,moses delayed to come down from the mount1 gathering together against ,aaron1 said3 ,arise1 make us gods1 that may go before us3 ,for as to this ,moses1 the man that brought us out of the land of ,egypt1 we know not what has befallen him4 #cb3b4 ,and ,aaron said to them3 ,take the golden earrings from the ears of your wives1 and your sons and daughters1 and bring them to me4 #cb3c4 ,and the people did what he had commanded1 bringing the earrings to ,aaron4 #cb3d4 ,and when he had received them1 he fashioned them by founders' work1 and made of them a molten calf4 ,and they said3 ,these are thy gods1 ,o ,israel1 that have brought thee out of the land of ,egypt4 #cb3e4 ,and when ,aaron saw this1 he built an altar before it1 and made proclamation by a crier's voice1 saying ,to morrow is the solemnity of the ,lord4 #cb3f4 ,and rising in the morning1 they offered holocausts1 and peace victims1 and the people sat down to eat and drink1 and they rose up to play4 #cb3g4 ,and the ,lord spoke to ,moses1 saying3 ,go1 get thee down3 thy people1 which thou hast brought out of the land of ,egypt1 hath sinned4 #cb3h4 ,they have quickly strayed from the way which thou didst shew them3 and they have made to themselves a molten calf1 and have adored it1 and sacrificing victims to it1 have said3 ,these are thy gods1 ,o ,israel1 that have brought thee out of the land of ,egypt4 #cb3i4 ,and again the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,i see that this people is stiffnecked3 #cb3aj4 ,let me alone1 that my wrath may be kindled against them1 and that ,i may destroy them1 and ,i will make of thee a great nation4 #cb3aa4 ,but ,moses besought the ,lord his ,god1 saying3 ,why1 ,o ,lord1 is thy indignation enkindled against thy people1 whom thou hast brought out of the land of ,egypt1 with great power1 and with a mighty hand8 #cb3ab4 ,let not the ,egyptians say1 ,i beseech thee3 ,he craftily brought them out1 that he might kill them in the mountains1 and destroy them from the earth3 let thy anger cease1 and be appeased upon the wickedness of thy people4 #cb3ac4 ,remember ,abraham1 ,isaac1 and ,israel1 thy servants1 to whom thou sworest by thy own self1 saying3 ,i will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven3 and this whole land that ,i have spoken of1 ,i will give to your seed1 and you shall possess it for ever3 #cb3ad4 ,and the ,lord was appeased from doing the evil which he had spoken against his people4 #cb3ae4 ,and ,moses returned from the mount1 carrying the two tables of the testimony in his hand1 written on both sides1 #cb3af4 ,and made by the work of ,god2 the writing also of ,god was graven in the tables4 #cb3ag4 ,and ,josue hearing the noise of the people shouting1 said to ,moses3 ,the noise of battle is heard in the camp4 #cb3ah4 ,but he answered3 ,it is not the cry of men encouraging to fight1 nor the shout of men compelling to flee3 but ,i hear the voice of singers4 #cb3ai4 ,and when he came nigh to the camp1 he saw the calf1 and the dances3 and being very angry1 he threw the tables out of his hand1 and broke them at the foot of the mount3 #cb3bj4 ,and laying hold of the calf which they had made1 he burnt it1 and beat it to powder1 which he strewed into water1 and gave thereof to the children of ,israel to drink4 #cb3ba4 ,and he said to ,aaron3 ,what has this people done to thee1 that thou shouldst bring upon them a most heinous sin8 #cb3bb4 ,and he answered him3 ,let not my lord be offended2 for thou knowest this people1 that they are prone to evil4 #cb3bc4 ,they said to me3 make us gods1 that may go before us2 for as to this ,moses1 who brought us forth out of the land of ,egypt1 we know not what is befallen him4 #cb3bd4 ,and ,i said to them3 ,which of you hath any gold8 and they took and brought it to me2 and ,i cast it into the fire1 and this calf came out4 #cb3be4 ,and when ,moses saw that the people were naked1 7for ,aaron had stripped them by occasion of the shame of the filth1 and had set them naked among their enemies7 ,naked444 ,having lost not only their gold1 and their honour1 but what was worst of all1 being stripped also of the grace of ,god1 and having lost him4-,the shame of the filth444 ,that is1 of the idol1 which they had taken for their god4 ,it is the usual phrase of the scripture to call idols filth and abominations4 #cb3bf4 ,then standing in the gate of the camp1 he said3 ,if any man be on the ,lord's side1 let him join with me4 ,and all the sons of ,levi gathered themselves together unto him3 #cb3bg4 ,and he said to them3 ,thus saith the ,lord ,god of ,israel3 ,put every man his sword upon his thigh3 go1 and return from gate to gate through the midst of the camp1 and let every man kill his brother1 and friend1 and neighbour4 #cb3bh4 ,and the sons of ,levi did according to the words of ,moses1 and there were slain that day about three and twenty thousand men4 #cb3bi4 ,and ,moses said3 ,you have consecrated your hands this day to the ,lord1 every man in his son and in his brother1 that a blessing may be given to you4 #cb3cj4 ,and when the next day was come1 ,moses spoke to the people3 ,you have sinned a very great sin3 ,i will go up to the ,lord1 if by any means ,i may be able to entreat him for your crime4 #cb3ca4 ,and returning to the ,lord1 he said3 ,i beseech thee3 this people hath sinned a heinous sin1 and they have made to themselves gods of gold3 either forgive them this trespass1 #cb3cb4 ,or if thou do not1 strike me out of the book that thou hast written4 #cb3cc4 ,and the ,lord answered him3 ,he that hath sinned against me1 him will ,i strike out of my book3 #cb3cd4 ,but go thou1 and lead this people whither ,i have told thee3 my angel shall go before thee4 ,and ,i in the day of revenge will visit this sin also of theirs4 #cb3ce4 ,the ,lord therefore struck the people for the guilt1 on occasion of the calf which ,aaron had made4 ,exodus ,chapter #cc ,the people mourn for their sin4 ,moses pitcheth the tabernacle without the camp4 ,he converseth familiarly with ,god4 ,desireth to see his glory4 #cc3a4 ,and the ,lord spoke to ,moses1 saying3 ,go1 get thee up from this place1 thou and thy people which thou hast brought out of the land of ,egypt1 into the land concerning which ,i swore to ,abraham1 ,isaac1 and ,jacob1 saying3 ,to thy seed ,i will give it3 #cc3b4 ,and ,i will send an angel before thee1 that ,i may cast out the ,chanaanite1 and the ,amorrhite1 and the ,hethite1 and the ,pherezite1 and the ,hevite1 and the ,jebusite1 #cc3c4 ,that thou mayst enter into the land that floweth with milk and honey4 ,for ,i will not go up with thee1 because thou art a stiffnecked people2 lest ,i destroy thee in the way4 #cc3d4 ,and the people hearing these very bad tidings1 mourned3 and no man put on his ornaments according to custom4 #cc3e4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,say to the children of ,israel3 ,thou art a stiffnecked people1 once ,i shall come up in the midst of thee1 and shall destroy thee4 ,now presently lay aside thy ornaments1 that ,i may know what to do to thee4 #cc3f4 ,so the children of ,israel laid aside their ornaments by ,mount ,horeb4 #cc3g4 ,moses also taking the tabernacle1 pitched it without the camp afar off1 and called the name thereof1 ,the tabernacle of the covenant4 ,and all the people1 that had any question1 went forth to the tabernacle of the covenant1 without the camp4 #cc3h4 ,and when ,moses went forth to the tabernacle1 all the people rose up1 and every one stood in the door of his pavilion1 and they beheld the back of ,moses1 till he went into the tabernacle4 #cc3i4 ,and when he was gone into the tabernacle of the covenant1 the pillar of the cloud came down1 and stood at the door1 and he spoke with ,moses4 #cc3aj4 ,and all saw that the pillar of the cloud stood at the door of the tabernacle4 ,and they stood and worshipped at the doors of their tent4 #cc3aa4 ,and the ,lord spoke to ,moses face to face1 as a man is wont to speak to his friend4 ,and when he returned into the camp1 his servant ,josue1 the son of ,nun1 a young man1 departed not from the tabernacle4 ,face to face444 ,that is1 in a most familiar manner4 ,though as we learn from this very chapter1 ,moses could not see the face of the ,lord4 #cc3ab4 ,and ,moses said to the ,lord3 ,thou commandest me to lead forth this people2 and thou dost not let me know whom thou wilt send with me1 especially whereas thou hast said3 ,i know thee by name1 and thou hast found favour in my sight4 ,i know thee by name444 ,in the language of the scriptures1 ,god is said to know such as he approves and loves3 and to know by name1 those whom he favours in a most singular manner1 as he did his servant ,moses4 #cc3ac4 ,if therefore ,i have found favour in thy sight1 shew me thy face1 that ,i may know thee1 and may find grace before thy eyes3 look upon thy people this nation4 #cc3ad4 ,and the ,lord said3 ,my face shall go before thee1 and ,i will give thee rest4 #cc3ae4 ,and ,moses said3 ,if thou thyself dost not go before1 bring us not out of this place4 #cc3af4 ,for how shall we be able to know1 ,i and thy people1 that we have found grace in thy sight1 unless thou walk with us1 that we may be glorified by all people that dwell upon the earth8 #cc3ag4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,this word also1 which thou hast spoken1 will ,i do2 for thou hast found grace before me1 and thee ,i have known by name4 #cc3ah4 ,and he said3 ,shew me thy glory4 #cc3ai4 ,he answered3 ,i will shew thee all good1 and ,i will proclaim in the name of the ,lord before thee3 and ,i will have mercy on whom ,i will1 and ,i will be merciful to whom it shall please me4 #cc3bj4 ,and again he said3 ,thou canst not see my face3 for man shall not see me1 and live4 #cc3ba4 ,and again he said3 ,behold there is a place with me1 and thou shalt stand upon the rock4 #cc3bb4 ,and when my glory shall pass1 ,i will set thee in a hole of the rock1 and protect thee with my righthand till ,i pass3 #cc3bc4 ,and ,i will take away my hand1 and thou shalt see my back parts3 but my face thou canst not see4 ,see my back parts444 ,the ,lord by his angel1 usually spoke to ,moses in the pillar of the cloud2 so that he could not see the glory of him that spoke familiarly with him4 ,in the vision here mentioned he was allowed to see something of him1 in an assumed corporeal form3 not in the face1 the rays of which were too bright for mortal eye to bear1 but to view him as it were behind1 when his face was turned from him4 ,exodus ,chapter #cd ,the tables are renewed3 all society with the ,chanaanites is forbid3 some precepts concerning the firstborn1 the sabbath1 and other feasts3 after forty days' fast1 ,moses returneth to the people with the commandments1 and his face appearing horned with rays of light1 he covereth it1 whensoever he speaketh to the people4 #cd3a4 ,and after this he said3 ,hew thee two tables of stone like unto the former1 and ,i will write upon them the words1 which were in the tables1 which thou brokest4 #cd3b4 ,be ready in the morning1 that thou mayst forthwith go up into ,mount ,sinai1 and thou shalt stand with me upon the top of the mount4 #cd3c4 ,let no man go up with thee1 and let not any man be seen throughout all the mount2 neither let the oxen nor the sheep feed over against it4 #cd3d4 ,then he cut out two tables of stone1 such as had been before2 and rising very early he went up into the ,mount ,sinai1 as the ,lord had commanded him1 carrying with him the tables4 #cd3e4 ,and when the ,lord was come down in a cloud1 ,moses stood with him1 calling upon the name of the ,lord4 #cd3f4 ,and when he passed before him1 he said3 ,o the ,lord1 the ,lord ,god1 merciful and gracious1 patient and of much compassion1 and true1 #cd3g4 ,who keepest mercy unto thousands3 who takest away iniquity1 and wickedness1 and sin1 and no man of himself is innocent before thee4 ,who renderest the iniquity of the fathers to the children1 and to the grandchildren unto the third and fourth generation4 #cd3h4 ,and ,moses making haste1 bowed down prostrate unto the earth1 and adoring1 #cd3i4 ,said3 ,if ,i have found grace in thy sight1 ,o ,lord1 ,i beseech thee that thou wilt go with us1 7for it is a stiffnecked people7 and take away our iniquities and sin1 and possess us4 #cd3aj4 ,the ,lord answered3 ,i will make a covenant in the sight of all1 ,i will do signs such as were never seen upon the earth1 nor in any nations2 that this people1 in the midst of whom thou art1 may see the terrible work of the ,lord which ,i will do4 #cd3aa4 ,observe all things which this day ,i command thee3 ,i myself will drive out before thy face the ,amorrhite1 and the ,chanaanite1 and the ,hethite1 and the ,pherezite1 and the ,hevite1 and the ,jebusite4 #cd3ab4 ,beware thou never join in friendship with the inhabitants of that land1 which may be thy ruin3 #cd3ac4 ,but destroy their altars1 break their statues and cut down their groves3 #cd3ad4 ,adore not any strange god4 ,the ,lord his name is jealous1 he is a jealous ,god4 #cd3ae4 ,make no covenant with the men of those countries2 lest1 when they have committed fornication with their gods1 and have adored their idols1 some one call thee to eat of the things sacrificed4 #cd3af4 ,neither shalt thou take of their daughters a wife for thy son1 lest after they themselves have committed fornication1 they make thy sons also to commit fornication with their gods4 #cd3ag4 ,thou shalt not make to thyself any molten gods4 #cd3ah3 ,thou shalt keep the feast of the unleavened bread4 ,seven days shalt thou eat unleavened bread1 as ,i commanded thee in the time of the month of the new corn3 for in the month of the spring time thou camest out from ,egypt4 #cd3ai4 ,all of the male kind that openeth the womb1 shall be mine4 ,of all beasts2 both of oxen and of sheep1 it shall be mine4 #cd3bj4 ,the firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a sheep3 but if thou wilt not give a price for it1 it shall be slain4 ,the firstborn of thy sons thou shalt redeem3 neither shalt thou appear before me empty4 #cd3ba4 ,six days shalt thou work1 the seventh day thou shalt cease to plough and to reap4 #cd3bb4 ,thou shalt keep the feast of weeks with the firstfruits of the corn of thy wheat harvest1 and the feast when the time of the year returneth that all things are laid in4 #cd3bc4 ,three times in the year all thy males shall appear in the sight of the almighty ,lord the ,god of ,israel4 #cd3bd4 ,for when ,i shall have taken away the nations from thy face1 and shall have enlarged thy borders1 no man shall lie in wait against thy land when thou shalt go up1 and appear in the sight of the ,lord thy ,god thrice in a year4 #cd3be4 ,thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice upon leaven2 neither shall there remain in the morning any thing of the victim of the solemnity of the ,phase4 #cd3bf4 ,the first of the fruits of thy ground thou shalt offer in the house of the ,lord thy ,god4 ,thou shalt not boil a kid in the milk of his dam4 #cd3bg4 ,and the ,lord said to ,moses3 ,write thee these words1 by which ,i have made a covenant both with thee and with ,israel4 #cd3bh4 ,and he was there with the ,lord forty days and forty nights3 he neither ate bread nor drank water1 and he wrote upon the tables the ten words of the covenant4 #cd3bi4 ,and when ,moses came down from the ,mount ,sinai1 he held the two tables of the testimony1 and he knew not that his face was horned from the conversation of the ,lord4 ,horned444 ,that is1 shining1 and sending forth rays of light like horns4 #cd3cj4 ,and ,aaron and the children of ,israel seeing the face of ,moses horned1 were afraid to come near4 #cd3ca4 ,and being called by him1 they returned1 both ,aaron and the rulers of the congregation4 ,and after that he spoke to them1 #cd3cb4 ,and all the children of ,israel came to him3 and he gave them in commandment all that he had heard of the ,lord on ,mount ,sinai4 #cd3cc4 ,and having done speaking1 he put a veil upon his face4 #cd3cd4 ,but when he went in to the ,lord1 and spoke with him1 he took it away until he came forth1 and then he spoke to the children of ,israel all things that had been commanded him4 #cd3ce4 ,and they saw that the face of ,moses when he came out was horned1 but he covered his face again1 if at any time he spoke to them4 ,exodus ,chapter #ce ,the sabbath4 ,offerings for making the tabernacle4 ,beseleel and ,ooliab are called to the work4 #ce3a4 ,and all the multitude of the children of ,israel being gathered together1 he said to them3 ,these are the things which the ,lord hath commanded to be done3 #ce3b4 ,six days you shall do work2 the seventh day shall be holy unto you1 the sabbath and the rest of the ,lord3 he that shall do any work on it1 shall be put to death4 #ce3c4 ,you shall kindle no fire in any of your habitations on the sabbath day4 #ce3d4 ,and ,moses said to all the assembly of the children of ,israel3 ,this is the word the ,lord hath commanded1 saying3 #ce3e4 ,set aside with you firstfruits to the ,lord4 ,let every one that is willing and hath a ready heart1 offer them to the ,lord3 gold1 and silver1 and brass1 #ce3f4 ,violet and purple1 and scarlet twice dyed1 and fine linen1 goats' hair1 #ce3g4 ,and rams' skins dyed red1 and violet coloured skins1 setim wood1 #ce3h4 ,and oil to maintain lights1 and to make ointment1 and most sweet incense1 #ce3i4 ,onyx stones1 and precious stones1 for the adorning of the ephod and the rational4 #ce3aj4 ,whosoever of you is wise1 let him come1 and make that which the ,lord hath commanded3 #ce3aa4 ,to wit1 the tabernacle1 and the roof thereof1 and the cover1 the rings1 and the board-work with the bars1 the pillars and the sockets3 #ce3ab4 ,the ark and the staves1 the propitiatory1 and the veil that is drawn before it3 #ce3ac4 ,the table with the bars and the vessels1 and the loaves of proposition3 #ce3ad4 ,the candlestick to bear up the lights1 the vessels thereof and the lamps1 and the oil for the nourishing of fires3 #ce3ae4 ,the altar of incense1 and the bars1 and the oil of unction1 and the incense of court1 with the pillars and the sockets1 the hanging in the doors of the entry4 #ce3ah4 ,the pins of the tabernacle1 and of the court1 with their little cords3 #ce3ai4 ,the vestments that are to be used in the ministry of the sanctuary1 the vesture of ,aaron the high priest1 and of his sons1 to do the office of priesthood to me4 #ce3bj4 ,and all the multitude of the children of ,israel going out from the presence of ,moses1 #ce3ba4 ,offered firstfruits to the ,lord with a most ready and devout mind1 to make the work of the tabernacle of the testimony4 ,whatever was necessary to the service and to the holy vestments1 #ce3bb4 ,both men and women gave bracelets and earrings1 rings and tablets3 every vessel of gold was set aside to be offered to the ,lord4 #ce3bc4 ,if any man had violet1 and purple1 and scarlet twice dyed1 fine linen and goats' hair1 ramskins dyed red1 and violet coloured skins1 #ce3bd4 ,metal of silver and brass1 they offered it to the ,lord1 and setim wood for divers uses4 #ce3be4 ,the skilful women also gave such things as they had spun1 violet1 purple1 and scarlet1 and fine linen1 #ce3bf4 ,and goats' hair1 giving all of their own accord4 #ce3bg4 ,but the princes offered onyx stones1 and precious stones1 for the ephod and the rational1 #ce3bh4 ,and spices and oil for the lights1 and for the preparing of ointment1 and to make the incense of most sweet savour4 #ce3bi4 ,all1 both men and women1 with devout mind offered gifts1 that the works might be done which the ,lord had commanded by the hand of ,moses4 ,all the children of ,israel dedicated voluntary offerings to the ,lord4 #ce3cj4 ,and ,moses said to the children of ,israel3 ,behold1 the ,lord hath called by name ,beseleel1 the son of ,uri1 the son of ,hur1 of the tribe of ,juda1 #ce3ca4 ,and hath filled him with the spirit of ,god1 with wisdom and understanding1 and knowledge1 and all learning1 #ce3cb4 ,to devise and to work in gold and silver and brass1 #ce3cc4 ,and in engraving stones1 and in carpenters' work4 ,whatsoever can be devised artificially1 #ce3cd4 ,he hath given in his heart3 ,ooliab also1 the son of ,achisamech1 of the tribe of ,dan3 #ce3ce4 ,both of them hath he instructed with wisdom1 to do carpenters' work1 and tapestry1 and embroidery in blue and purple1 and scarlet twice dyed1 and fine linen1 and to weave all things1 and to invent all new things4 ,exodus ,chapter #cf ,the offerings are delivered to the workmen1 the curtains1 coverings1 boards1 bars1 veil1 pillars1 and hanging are made4 #cf3a4 ,beseleel therefore1 and ,ooliab1 and every wise man1 to whom the ,lord gave wisdom and understanding1 to know how to work artificially1 made the things that are necessary for the uses of the sanctuary1 and which the ,lord commanded4 #cf3b4 ,and when ,moses had called them1 and every skilful man1 to whom the ,lord had given wisdom1 and such as of their own accord had offered themselves to the making of the work1 #cf3c4 ,he delivered all the offerings of the children of ,israel unto them4 ,and while they were earnest about the work1 the people daily in the morning offered their vows4 #cf3d4 ,whereupon the workmen being constrained to come1 #cf3e4 ,said to ,moses3 ,the people offereth more than is necessary4 #cf3f4 ,moses therefore commanded proclamation to be made by the crier's voice3 ,let neither man nor woman offer any more for the work of the sanctuary4 ,and so they ceased from offering gifts1 #cf3g4 ,because the things that were offered did suffice1 and were too much4 #cf3h4 ,and all the men that were wise of heart1 to accomplish the work of the tabernacle1 made ten curtains of twisted fine linen1 and violet1 and purple1 and scarlet twice dyed1 with varied work1 and the art of embroidering3 #cf3i4 ,the length of one curtain was twenty-eight cubits1 and the breadth four3 all the curtains were of the same size4 #cf3aj4 ,and he joined five curtains1 one to another1 and the other five he coupled one to another4 #cf3aa4 ,he made also loops of violet in the edge of one curtain on both sides1 and in the edge of the other curtain in like manner1 #cf3ab4 ,that the loops might meet one against another1 and might be joined each with the other4 #cf3ac4 ,whereupon also he cast fifty rings of gold1 that might catch the loops of the curtains1 and they might be made one tabernacle4 #cf3ad4 ,he made also eleven curtains of goats' hair1 to cover the roof of the tabernacle3 #cf3ae4 ,one curtain was thirty cubits long1 and four cubits broad3 all the curtains were of one measure4 #cf3af4 ,five of which he joined apart1 and the other six apart4 #cf3ag4 ,and he made fifty loops in the edge of one curtain1 and fifty in the edge of another curtain1 that they might be joined one to another4 #cf3ah4 ,and fifty buckles of brass wherewith the roof might be knit together1 that of all the curtains there might be made one covering4 #cf3ai4 ,he made also a cover for the tabernacle of rams' skins dyed red2 and another cover over that of violet skins4 #cf3bj4 ,he made also the boards of the tabernacle of setim wood standing4 #cf3ba4 ,the length of one board was ten cubits2 and the breadth was one cubit and a half4 #cf3bb4 ,there were two mortises throughout every board1 that one might be joined to the other4 ,and in this manner he made for all the boards of the tabernacle4 #cf3bc4 ,of which twenty were at the south side southward1 #cf3bd4 ,with forty sockets of silver1 two sockets were put under one board on the two sides of the corners1 where the mortises of the sides end in the corners4 #cf3be4 ,at that side also of the tabernacle1 that looketh towards the north1 he made twenty boards1 #cf3bf4 ,with forty sockets of silver1 two sockets for every board4 #cf3bg4 ,but against the west1 to wit1 at that side of the tabernacle1 which looketh to the sea1 he made six boards1 #cf3bh4 ,and two others at each corner of the tabernacle behind3 #cf3bi4 ,which were also joined from beneath unto the top1 and went together into one joint4 ,thus he did on both sides at the corners3 #cf3cj4 ,so there were in all eight boards1 and they had sixteen sockets of silver1 to wit1 two sockets under every board4 #cf3ca4 ,he made also bars of setim wood1 five to hold together the boards of one side of the tabernacle1 #cf3cb4 ,and five others to join together the boards of the other side2 and besides these1 five other bars at the west side of the tabernacle towards the sea4 #cf3cc4 ,he made also another bar1 that might come by the midst of the boards from corner to corner4 #cf3cd4 ,and the boards themselves he overlaid with gold casting for them sockets of silver4 ,and their rings he made of gold1 through which the bars might be drawn3 and he covered the bars themselves with plates of gold4 #cf3ce4 ,he made also a veil of violet1 and purple1 scarlet and fine twisted linen1 varied and distinguished with embroidery3 #cf3cf4 ,and four pillars of setim wood1 which with their heads he overlaid with gold1 casting for them sockets of silver4 #cf3cg4 ,he made also a hanging in the entry of the tabernacle of violet1 purple1 scarlet1 and fine twisted linen1 with the work of an
