twelve men1 whom he had prepared of the

over ,jordan1 the waters of ,jordan were

shall be for a memorial unto the

of ,israel did so as ,joshua commanded1 
and             took up twelve stones   
out of the midst of ,jordan1 as the     
,,lord             spake unto ,joshua1  
according to the number of the tribes of

and carried them over with them unto    
the place where they lodged1 and laid

,joshua set up twelve stones in the

place where the feet of the priests

but all the             people that were
 born in the wilderness by the way as

were men of war1 which             came

did eat of the old corn of the land on

shall compass the city             seven
 times1 and the priests shall blow with

horn1 and when ye hear the sound of the

him that is armed pass on before the ark

seven priests bearing the seven trumpets
 of rams'             horns passed on   
before the ,,lord1 and blew with the

trumpets1 and the rereward came after

came to pass1 when the people heard the 
sound of the             trumpet1 and   
the people shouted with a great shout1  
that the             wall fell down     

flat1 so that the people went up into   
the city1             every man straight
 before him1 and they took the city4

all that was in the city1 both man      
and woman1 young and old1 and ox1 and   
sheep1 and ass1 with the

,joshua had said unto the two men that  
had spied out the             country1

only the silver1 and the gold1 and the  
vessels of brass and of                 
iron1 they put into the treasury of the

and all that she had2 and she dwelleth

saying1             ,go up and view the

to ,joshua1 and said unto him1 ,let not 
all             the people go up2 but   
let about two or three thousand men go  
up and smite ,ai2 and make not all the  
people to labour             thither2

about three thousand             men3   
and they fled before the men of ,ai4

they chased them from before the gate

transgressed my             covenant

have put it even among their own stuff4

,israel could not stand before their    
enemies1 but turned their backs before

were accursed3 neither will ,i be with

destroy the accursed from among you4

forth3 and they went to lie in          
ambush1 and abode between ,bethel and   
,ai1 on the west side of                
,ai3 but ,joshua lodged that night among

numbered the             people1 and    
went up1 he and the elders of ,israel1

the people of war that were with him1   
went up1 and drew nigh1 and came before 
the city1 and pitched             on the
 north side of ,ai3 now there was a     
valley between them             and ,ai4

thousand men1 and set them to lie in    
ambush between ,bethel and ,ai1 on the  
west side of the city4    #jf3jjh3jac   
,and when they had set the people1 even 
all the host that was             on the
 north of the city1 and their liers in  
wait on the west             of the     
city1 ,joshua went that night into the  
midst of the             valley4        
#jf3jjh3jad ,and it came to pass1 when  
the king of ,ai saw it1 that they       
hasted and rose up early1 and the men of
 the city went out             against  
,israel to battle1 he and all his       

people1 at a time             appointed1
 before the plain2 but he wist not that 
there were             liers in ambush  
against him behind the city4            
#jf3jjh3jae ,and ,joshua and all ,israel
 made as if they were beaten before     
them1 and fled by the way of the        
wilderness4    #jf3jjh3jaf ,and all the 
people that were in ,ai were called     
together to             pursue after    
them3 and they pursued after ,joshua1   
and were             drawn away from the
 city4    #jf3jjh3jag ,and there was not
 a man left in ,ai or ,bethel1 that went
 not             out after ,israel3 and 
they left the city open1 and pursued    
after ,israel4    #jf3jjh3jah ,and the  
,,lord said unto ,joshua1 ,stretch out  
the spear that is             in thy    
hand toward ,ai2 for ,i will give it    
into thine hand4 ,and                   
,joshua stretched out the spear that he 
had in his hand toward             the  
city4    #jf3jjh3jai ,and the ambush    
arose quickly out of their place1 and   

they ran             as soon as he had  
stretched out his hand3 and they entered
             into the city1 and took it1
 and hasted and set the city on         
fire4    #jf3jjh3jbj ,and when the men  
of ,ai looked behind them1 they saw1    
and1             behold1 the smoke of   
the city ascended up to heaven1 and they
             had no power to flee this  
way or that way3 and the people that    
fled to the wilderness turned back upon 
the pursuers4    #jf3jjh3jba ,and when  
,joshua and all ,israel saw that the    
ambush had taken             the city1  
and that the smoke of the city ascended1
 then they             turned again1 and
 slew the men of ,ai4    #jf3jjh3jbb    
,and the other issued out of the city   
against them2 so they             were  
in the midst of ,israel1 some on this   
side1 and some on             that side3
 and they smote them1 so that they let  
none of them             remain or      
escape4    #jf3jjh3jbc ,and the king of 
,ai they took alive1 and brought him to 

,joshua4    #jf3jjh3jbd ,and it came to 
pass1 when ,israel had made an end of   
slaying             all the inhabitants 
of ,ai in the field1 in the wilderness  
wherein they chased them1 and when they 
were all fallen on the             edge 
of the sword1 until they were consumed1 
that all the             ,israelites    
returned unto ,ai1 and smote it with the
 edge of the             sword4         
#jf3jjh3jbe ,and so it was1 that all    
that fell that day1 both of men and     
women1 were twelve thousand1 even all   
the men of ,ai4    #jf3jjh3jbf ,for     
,joshua drew not his hand back1         
wherewith he stretched out              
the spear1 until he had utterly         
destroyed all the inhabitants           
of ,ai4    #jf3jjh3jbg ,only the cattle 
and the spoil of that city ,israel took 
for a             prey unto themselves1 
according unto the word of the ,,lord   
which he commanded ,joshua4

made it an heap for ever1 even a

 ,and the king of ,ai he hanged on a    
tree until eventide3 and as             
soon as the sun was down1 ,joshua       
commanded that they should              
take his carcase down from the tree1 and
 cast it at the             entering of 
the gate of the city1 and raise thereon 
a great             heap of stones1 that

 ,then ,joshua built an altar unto the  
,,lord ,god of ,israel in               
mount ,ebal1    #jf3jjh3jca ,as ,moses  
the servant of the ,,lord commanded the 
children of             ,israel1 as it  
is written in the book of the law of    
,moses1 an             altar of whole   
stones1 over which no man hath lift up  
any             iron3 and they offered  
thereon burnt offerings unto the ,,lord1
             and sacrificed peace

there upon the stones a copy of the law 
of ,moses1             which he wrote in
 the presence of the children of

,israel1 and their elders1 and officers1
 and their             judges1 stood on 
this side the ark and on that side      
before the             priests the      
,levites1 which bare the ark of the     
covenant of the             ,,lord1 as  
well the stranger1 as he that was born  
among them2             half of them    
over against mount ,gerizim1 and half of
 them over             against mount    
,ebal2 as ,moses the servant of the     
,,lord had             commanded before1
 that they should bless the people of

he read all the words of the law1 the   
blessings             and cursings1     
according to all that is written in the 
book of             the law4

 that ,moses commanded1 which ,joshua   
read not before all the congregation of 
,israel1 with the             women1 and
 the little ones1 and the strangers that
 were             conversant among them4

when all the kings which were on this   
side ,jordan1 in the hills1 and in the  
valleys1 and in all the                 
coasts of the great sea over against    
,lebanon1 the ,hittite1 and             
the ,amorite1 the ,canaanite1 the       
,perizzite1 the ,hivite1 and the

 ,that they gathered themselves         
together1 to fight with ,joshua         
and with ,israel1 with one accord4      
#jf3jji3jjc ,and when the inhabitants of
 ,gibeon heard what ,joshua had done

 ,they did work wilily1 and went and    
made as if they had been                
ambassadors1 and took old sacks upon    
their asses1 and wine                   
bottles1 old1 and rent1 and bound up2

upon their feet1 and old garments       
upon them2 and all the bread of their   
provision was dry and                   
mouldy4    #jf3jji3jjf ,and they went to

 ,joshua unto the camp at ,gilgal1 and  
said unto             him1 and to the   
men of ,israel1 ,we be come from a far  
country3             now therefore make 
ye a league with us4    #jf3jji3jjg ,and

dwell among us2 and how shall we make a

they said unto ,joshua1 ,we are thy

spake to us1 saying1 ,take victuals with
 you for the journey1             and go
 to meet them1 and say unto them1 ,we   
are your servants3             therefore
 now make ye a league with us4          
#jf3jji3jab ,this our bread we took hot 
for our provision out of our houses     
on the day we came forth to go unto you2
 but now1 behold1 it             is dry1
 and it is mouldy3    #jf3jji3jac ,and  
these bottles of wine1 which we filled1 
were new2 and1             behold1 they 
be rent3 and these our garments and our 
shoes are             become old by     
reason of the very long journey4

victuals1 and asked not counsel at

,and ,joshua made peace with them1 and  
made a league with them1             to 
let them live3 and the princes of the   
congregation sware             unto

pass at the end of three days after they
 had             made a league with     

them1 that they heard that they were    
their             neighbours1 and that  
they dwelt among them4    #jf3jji3jag   
,and the children of ,israel journeyed1 
and came unto their             cities  
on the third day4 ,now their cities were
 ,gibeon1 and             ,chephirah1   
and ,beeroth1 and ,kirjathjearim4       
#jf3jji3jah ,and the children of ,israel
 smote them not1 because the princes    
of the congregation had sworn unto them 
by the ,,lord ,god of                   
,israel4 ,and all the congregation      
murmured against the princes4           
#jf3jji3jai ,but all the princes said   
unto all the congregation1 ,we have     
sworn unto them by the ,,lord ,god of   
,israel3 now therefore we               
may not touch them4    #jf3jji3jbj ,this
 we will do to them2 we will even let   
them live1 lest             wrath be    
upon us1 because of the oath which we   
sware unto             them4

them1 ,let them live2 but let them be   

hewers of wood and drawers of water unto

the princes had promised them4          
#jf3jji3jbb ,and ,joshua called for     
them1 and he spake unto them1 saying1   
,wherefore have ye beguiled us1 saying1 
,we are very far from             you2

,now therefore ye are cursed1 and there 
shall none of you be             freed  
from being bondmen1 and hewers of wood  
and drawers of             water for the

they answered ,joshua1 and said1        
,because it was certainly               
told thy servants1 how that the ,,lord  
thy ,god commanded his                  
servant ,moses to give you all the land1
 and to destroy all the                 
inhabitants of the land from before you1
 therefore we were             sore     
afraid of our lives because of you1 and 
have done this             thing4

thine hand3 as it seemeth good and      

right unto thee to do unto us1 do4      
#jf3jji3jbf ,and so did he unto them1   
and delivered them out of the hand of   
the children of ,israel1 that they slew

made them that day hewers of wood and   
drawers of             water for the    
congregation1 and for the altar of the  
,,lord1             even unto this day1 
in the place which he should choose4

,adonizedec king of ,jerusalem had      
heard how ,joshua had taken ,ai1 and had
 utterly destroyed it2             as he
 had done to ,jericho and her king1 so  
he had done to ,ai             and her  
king2 and how the inhabitants of ,gibeon
 had made peace             with        
,israel1 and were among them2

because ,gibeon was a great city1 as    
one of the royal cities1 and because it 
was greater than ,ai1             and   
all the men thereof were mighty4

of ,hebron1 and unto ,piram king of     
,jarmuth1 and unto ,japhia

up unto me1 and help me1 that we may    
smite ,gibeon3 for it             hath  
made peace with ,joshua and with the

,therefore the five kings of the        
,amorites1 the king of                  
,jerusalem1 the king of ,hebron1 the    
king of ,jarmuth1 the king              
of ,lachish1 the king of ,eglon1        
gathered themselves together1           
and went up1 they and all their hosts1  
and encamped before             ,gibeon1
 and made war against it4    #jf3jaj3jjf
 ,and the men of ,gibeon sent unto      
,joshua to the camp to ,gilgal1         
saying1 ,slack not thy hand from thy    
servants2 come up to us                 
quickly1 and save us1 and help us3 for  
all the kings of the                    
,amorites that dwell in the mountains   

are gathered together                   
against us4    #jf3jaj3jjg ,so ,joshua  
ascended from ,gilgal1 he1 and all the  
people of war             with him1 and 
all the mighty men of valour4           
#jf3jaj3jjh ,and the ,,lord said unto   
,joshua1 ,fear them not3 for ,i have    
delivered them into thine hand2 there   
shall not a man of them                 
stand before thee4    #jf3jaj3jji       
,joshua therefore came unto them        
suddenly1 and went up from              
,gilgal all night4    #jf3jaj3jaj ,and  
the ,,lord discomfited them before      
,israel1 and slew them             with 
a great slaughter at ,gibeon1 and chased
 them along the             way that    
goeth up to ,bethhoron1 and smote them  
to ,azekah1 and             unto        
,makkedah4    #jf3jaj3jaa ,and it came  
to pass1 as they fled from before       
,israel1 and were             in the    
going down to ,bethhoron1 that the      
,,lord cast down great                  
stones from heaven upon them unto       

,azekah1 and they died3 they            
were more which died with hailstones    
than they whom the             children 
of ,israel slew with the sword4

,,lord in the day when the ,,lord       
delivered up the ,amorites before the   
children of ,israel1 and             he 
said in the sight of ,israel1 ,sun1     
stand thou still upon                   
,gibeon2 and thou1 ,moon1 in the valley

stood still1 and the moon stayed1 until 
the people             had avenged      
themselves upon their enemies4 ,is not  
this written             in the book of 
,jasher8 ,so the sun stood still in the 
midst of             heaven1 and hasted 
not to go down about a whole day4       
#jf3jaj3jad ,and there was no day like  
that before it or after it1 that the    
,,lord hearkened unto the voice of a    
man3 for the ,,lord fought              
for ,israel4    #jf3jaj3jae ,and ,joshua
 returned1 and all ,israel with him1    

unto the camp to             ,gilgal4   
#jf3jaj3jaf ,but these five kings fled1 
and hid themselves in a cave at         
,makkedah4    #jf3jaj3jag ,and it was   
told ,joshua1 saying1 ,the five kings   
are found hid             in a cave at  
,makkedah4    #jf3jaj3jah ,and ,joshua  
said1 ,roll great stones upon the mouth 
of the cave1             and set men by 
it for to keep them3    #jf3jaj3jai ,and
 stay ye not1 but pursue after your     
enemies1 and smite the                  
hindmost of them2 suffer them not to    
enter into their cities3             for
 the ,,lord your ,god hath delivered    
them into your hand4    #jf3jaj3jbj ,and
 it came to pass1 when ,joshua and the  
children of ,israel             had made
 an end of slaying them with a very     
great slaughter1             till they  
were consumed1 that the rest which      
remained of them             entered

all the people returned to the camp to  
,joshua at ,makkedah             in     

peace3 none moved his tongue against any
 of the children of             ,israel4

,open the mouth of the cave1 and bring  
out             those five kings unto me
 out of the cave4    #jf3jaj3jbc ,and

unto the captains of the men of war     
which went with him1 ,come              
near1 put your feet upon the necks of

the valley1 and in             the      
borders of ,dor on the west1

the east and on the west1 and to the    
,amorite1 and the ,hittite1 and the     
,perizzite1 and the ,jebusite           
in the mountains1 and to the ,hivite    
under ,hermon in the land             of
 ,mizpeh4    #jf3jaa3jjd ,and they went 
out1 they and all their hosts with them1
 much             people1 even as the   
sand that is upon the sea shore in      
multitude1 with horses and chariots very
 many4    #jf3jaa3jje ,and when all     

these kings were met together1 they came
 and             pitched together at the
 waters of ,merom1 to fight against     
,israel4    #jf3jaa3jjf ,and the ,,lord 
said unto ,joshua1 ,be not afraid       
because of them3             for to     
morrow about this time will ,i deliver  
them up all slain             before    
,israel3 thou shalt hough their horses1 
and burn their             chariots with

and all the people of war with him1     
against             them by the waters

did ,joshua take1 and smote them with   
the edge of the sword1             and  
he utterly destroyed them1 as ,moses the
 servant of the             ,,lord

the cities that stood still in their    
strength1             ,israel burned    
none of them1 save ,hazor only2 that did
 ,joshua             burn4

cities1 and the cattle1 the             
children of ,israel took for a prey unto
 themselves2 but every             man  

they smote with the edge of the sword1  
until they had             destroyed    
them1 neither left they any to breathe4

might destroy             them utterly1 
and that they might have no favour1 but 
that he             might destroy them1

the cities of the plain1 and all the    
kingdom of ,sihon             king of   
the ,amorites1 which reigned in         
,heshbon1 whom ,moses             smote 
with the princes of ,midian1 ,evi1 and  
,rekem1 and ,zur1 and             ,hur1 
and ,reba1 which were dukes of ,sihon1  
dwelling in the             country4

of ,israel slay with the sword among    
them that were slain by

border1 even unto the edge of the sea of

,this is the inheritance of the children

families1 the cities1 and their

gave inheritance unto the half tribe of

possession of the half tribe of the

their coast was from ,mahanaim1 all     
,bashan1 all the kingdom             of 
,og king of ,bashan1 and all the towns  
of ,jair1 which are in                  
,bashan1 threescore cities3

,ashtaroth1 and ,edrei1 cities of the   
kingdom of ,og in ,bashan1 were         
pertaining unto the children of         
,machir the son of ,manasseh1 even to   
the one half of the             children

which ,moses did distribute for         
inheritance in the plains of ,moab1 on  
the other side ,jordan1             by  
,jericho1 eastward4    #jf3jac3jcc ,but 
unto the tribe of ,levi ,moses gave not 
any inheritance3 the             ,,lord 
,god of ,israel was their inheritance1  
as he said unto             them4

 which the children of ,israel          
inherited in the land of ,canaan1 which 
,eleazar the priest1 and                

,joshua the son of ,nun1 and the heads  
of the fathers of the             tribes
 of the children of ,israel1 distributed
 for inheritance             to them4

inheritance1 as the ,,lord commanded by

nine tribes1 and for the half tribe4

inheritance of two tribes and an half

,ephraim3 therefore they gave no part   
unto the ,levites in the                
land1 save cities to dwell in1 with     
their suburbs for their                 
cattle and for their substance4

,moses1 so the children of ,israel did1 
and they divided the land4              
#jf3jad3jjf ,then the children of ,judah
 came unto ,joshua in ,gilgal3 and      

,caleb the son of ,jephunneh the        
,kenezite said unto him1 ,thou          
knowest the thing that the ,,lord said

because thou hast wholly followed the

border was from the shore of the salt   
sea1             from the bay that      
looketh southward3    #jf3jae3jjc ,and  
it went out to the south side to        
,maalehacrabbim1 and             passed 
along to ,zin1 and ascended up on the   
south side unto                         
,kadeshbarnea1 and passed along to      
,hezron1 and went up to ,adar1          
and fetched a compass to ,karkaa3       
#jf3jae3jjd ,from thence it passed      
toward ,azmon1 and went out unto the    
river of ,egypt2 and the goings out of  

that coast were at the             sea3 
this shall be your south coast4         
#jf3jae3jje ,and the east border was the
 salt sea1 even unto the end of         
,jordan4 ,and their border in the north 
quarter was from the bay             of 
the sea at the uttermost part of        
,jordan3    #jf3jae3jjf ,and the border 
went up to ,bethhogla1 and passed along 
by the             north of ,betharabah2
 and the border went up to the stone of 
,bohan the son of ,reuben3              
#jf3jae3jjg ,and the border went up     
toward ,debir from the valley of ,achor1
             and so northward1 looking  
toward ,gilgal1 that is before the      
going up to ,adummim1 which is on the   
south side of the river3             and
 the border passed toward the waters of 
,enshemesh1 and the             goings  
out thereof were at ,enrogel3           
#jf3jae3jjh ,and the border went up by  
the valley of the son of ,hinnom unto   
the south side of the ,jebusite2 the    
same is ,jerusalem3 and the             

border went up to the top of the        
mountain that lieth before              
the valley of ,hinnom westward1 which is
 at the end of the             valley of
 the giants northward3    #jf3jae3jji   
,and the border was drawn from the top  
of the hill unto the

,israel all the land which he sware to

have built an altar over against the    
land of ,canaan1 in the                 
borders of ,jordan1 at the passage of

,and when the children of ,israel heard 
of it1 the whole                        
congregation of the children of ,israel 
gathered themselves             together
 at ,shiloh1 to go up to war against

 of ,gad1 and to the half tribe of      
,manasseh1             into the land of 
,gilead1 ,phinehas the son of ,eleazar

,and with him ten princes1 of each chief
 house a prince             throughout  
all the tribes of ,israel2 and each one 
was an head             of the house of 
their fathers among the thousands of

unto the children of ,reuben1 and to the
 children             of ,gad1 and to   
the half tribe of ,manasseh1 unto the   
land of             ,gilead1 and they

,thus saith the whole congregation of   
the ,,lord1 ,what trespass              
is this that ye have committed against

this day1 although there was a plague in

will be wroth with the whole

land of your possession be unclean1     
then pass ye over unto the land of the

wherein the ,,lord's tabernacle         
dwelleth1 and take possession

us1 in building you an altar beside the 
altar of the ,,lord our

accursed thing1 and wrath fell on all

 and that man perished not alone in his

heads of             the thousands of

shall know2 if it be in rebellion1 or if
 in             transgression against

,,lord1 or if to offer thereon burnt    
offering or meat offering1              
or if to offer peace offerings thereon1

have not rather done it for fear of this

come your children might speak unto our 
children1 saying1 ,what have ye to do

hath made ,jordan a border between us   
and you1 ye             children of     
,reuben and children of ,gad2 ye have no
 part in the             ,,lord3 so     
shall your children make our children   
cease from             fearing the

said1 ,let us now prepare to build us an
 altar1             not for burnt       
offering1 nor for sacrifice3            
#jf3jbb3jbg ,but that it may be a       
witness between us1 and you1 and our    
generations after us1 that we might do  
the service of the ,,lord               
before him with our burnt offerings1 and
 with our sacrifices1             and   
with our peace offerings2 that your     
children may not say             to our 
children in time to come1 ,ye have no

,therefore said we1 that it shall be1   
when they should so say             to  
us or to our generations in time to     
come1 that we may say             again1
 ,behold the pattern of the altar of the

 ,,lord1 which our             fathers  
made1 not for burnt offerings1 nor for  
sacrifices2 but             it is a     
witness between us and you4

rebel against the ,,lord1 and turn      
this day from following the ,,lord1 to  
build an altar for burnt                
offerings1 for meat offerings1 or for   
sacrifices1 beside the             altar

 ,phinehas the priest1 and the princes  
of the             congregation and     
heads of the thousands of ,israel which 
were             with him1 heard the    
words that the children of ,reuben and  
the             children of ,gad and the
 children of ,manasseh spake1 it pleased

,phinehas the son of ,eleazar the priest
 said unto the             children of  
,reuben1 and to the children of ,gad1   
and to the             children of      
,manasseh1 ,this day we perceive that   

the ,,lord is             among us1     
because ye have not committed this

 now ye have delivered the children of  
,israel out of             the hand of

up against             them in battle1  
to destroy the land wherein the children

from all their enemies round about1 that

heads1 and for their judges1 and for    
their officers1             and said    
unto them1 ,i am old and stricken in

unto all             these nations      
because of you2 for the ,,lord your ,god
 is he that             hath fought for

divided unto you by lot these nations

inheritance for your tribes1 from       
,jordan1             with all the       
nations that ,i have cut off1 even unto 
the great             sea westward4

he shall expel them from before you1    
and drive them from out of your sight2  

and ye shall possess             their

 driven out from before you great       
nations and             strong3 but as  
for you1 no man hath been able to stand

a thousand3 for the ,,lord your ,god1   
he it is that fighteth for you1 as he

good heed therefore unto yourselves1

remnant             of these nations1   
even these that remain among you1 and   
shall             make marriages with   
them1 and go in unto them1 and they to

these nations from before you2 but they 
shall be             snares and traps   
unto you1 and scourges in your sides1
