,,sports ,,publishing ,,company #de ,,rose ,,street1 ,,new ,,york ,copyright1 #aiai1 by ,american ,sports ,publishing ,company4 ,,introduction4 ,there are a number of books on tennis1 but none has heretofore been written for the young girl just starting in to play4 ,it may be argued that the game is the same for both boy and girl1 therefore the same book will do for both4 ,this is true to a certain extent4 ,but just as there is a difference in the finished game1 so there is a difference in the early training2 and ,i believe that1 properly started1 a girl's game may be developed to the point where it is much more like the boy's game than it is at present4 ,tennis is a game requiring a quick eye and good judgment4 ,now a boy's eye is naturally trained to judge a ball in flight2 he plays at some kind of ball game from the day he is strong enough to toss one4 ,his body1 too1 responds more readily to what his eye tells him he must do4 ,therefore1 a girl has to spend more time and attention in developing her 8eye10 and in learning to get quick and accurate response from her muscles4 ,there is no good reason why a girl should not be as quick as her brother2 it is merely a matter of training4 ,,how ,,the ,,game ,,is ,,played4 ,tennis is a game to be played by two or four persons4 ,three may play1 by combining the two games1 and having one play 8singles0 against the other two playing 8doubles40 ,but the game properly has two forms3 8singles10 wherein two persons play1 one on each side of the net2 and 8doubles10 with two people on each side of the net4 ,this net1 which is #c feet high in the center and #c feet #f inches at the sides1 is stretched taut from two posts1 one at each side of the court1 across the middle of the court4 ,the court has a perfectly smooth1 level surface1 of clay1 dirt1 turf1 or cement1 as the case may be4 7,indoors the game is played on board floors47 ,it measures #gh feet in length and #bg feet in width1 for singles2 #cf feet in width for doubles4 ,the court is laid out with white lines to mark the boundaries4 ,these lines are drawn with slacked lime or whitewash1 or else marked out by tapes which come for the purpose4 ,twenty-one feet from the net1 on both sides1 a line is drawn1 parallel to the net1 to the sidelines of the singles court4 ,this space is in turn evenly divided by a line through the center1 running parallel to the sidelines1 passing under the center of the net4 ,the four small spaces thus made are called the 8service courts40 ,the narrow spaces between the sidelines of the singles and doubles court are called the 8alleys40 ,the game itself consists in one person 7the server7 putting the ball in play by hitting 7serving7 it into the proper service court1 and both players then knocking it back and forth across the net until it is sent either into the net or outside the boundary lines1 or missed altogether4 ,the players take turns serving1 each serving an entire game at a time4 ,the right to serve first is won by the player who calls the toss of the racket correctly4 ,the racket is spun about1 one player calling 8rough0 or 8smooth02 that is1 whether the lacing of colored gut is smooth side up or not4 ,the winner1 if she chooses to serve first 7instead she may take the choice of courts1 letting her opponent serve first71 then stands behind her baseline1 to the right of the center1 and1 tossing up the ball1 knocks it into her opponent's right-hand service court4 ,she has a second ball to try1 provided the first is a 8fault10 that is1 falls into the net or outside the correct service court4 ,many players hold a third ball in their hand1 or have it on the ground near them1 for if the ball strikes the top of the net and falls into the right court1 it is called a 8let0 ball and does not count one way or the other4 ,this is true only in serving1 at all other times a 8let0 ball is in play4 ,the opponent1 standing back of her service line1 tries to return the ball after its first bounce in the service court4 ,the ball is now in play1 being knocked back and forth1 until it is sent out of court1 or into the net1 or bounces twice before being struck4 ,once the ball is in play1 it may be 8volleyed10 that is1 hit before it bounces1 but the service ball must first strike the ground inside the service court4 ,this is repeated1 the server sending the ball alternately into the right and the left-hand courts1 from behind the right and the left sides of her baseline1 until the game is won4 ,the point is scored by the player who has last hit the ball into court4 ,if the server fails to send either ball into the proper court1 she makes a 8double fault10 and loses the point4 ,the score is called as follows3 the first point counts #ae1 the player's score which is zero 7#j7 being called 8love02 the next score1 if the point is won by the same player1 is called 8#cj-love10 the next 8#dj-love10 then 8game40 ,if the opponent1 in the meantime1 scores1 her point is called as #cj-ae1 #dj-cj1 the server's score always being called first4 ,if the points are even1 the call is 8#ae-;all0 or 8#cj-;all10 as the case may be1 instead of 8#ae-ae10 etc4 ,if the points are evened at #dj-;all1 the score is called 8deuce40 ,then one player has to win two points in succession from the deuce point1 the score going 8deuce10 8advantage server0 7or 8striker071 8deuce10 8advantage10 until the player who has the advantage point wins the next one1 and the game4 ,it takes six games to make a set1 unless the games go to 8#e-;all40 ,this is equivalent to 8deuce0 in the point score1 and requires two consecutive games to make 8set0--as #g_/e1 #h_/f1 #i_/g4 ,a match for girls is always the best two out of three sets4 ,the ball on service is always tossed into the air and struck before it bounds2 a ground stroke is used to return the ball after it has bounced2 a 8volley10 one wherein the ball has not struck the ground2 a 8lob0 is a ball knocked high into the air across the net2 a 8smash0 is a severe return of a lobbed ball4 ,these strokes1 their uses1 and the way to play them1 will be taken up in subsequent chapters4 ,,professional ,,teaching4 ,it has been seen that the main object of the game of tennis is to keep the ball in play and put it where the other person cannot reach it4 ,this entails more or less skill and accuracy in making shots4 ,the quickest way to gain this skill is1 as in all things1 to start in right4 ,learn the correct way and form1 whereby the best results are obtained with the least effort4 ,if a good professional is within reach1 the simplest and quickest method is to take a number of lessons from him to get the fundamental principles of the strokes2 then start playing1 keeping these instructions actively in mind until they become more or less instinctive4 ,a girl usually has to make more of a conscious effort to acquire some of the fundamentals than does her brother1 for she is not accustomed to games involving a ball in flight1 nor to the quick muscular response required4 ,she has to train both eye and mind to their proper uses4 ,illustration3 ,lines ,m ,n and ,o ,p should extend only to the service lines ,i ,j and ,k ,l1 but the dotted lines show that the service side lines may be extended to the base lines1 as provided in the second paragraph of ,law #bg4 ,illustration3 ,,plate ,i4 ,backhand grip1 showing the thumb diagonally across the handle1 helping support the force of the stroke2 the wrist well 8behind0 the racket4 ,illustration3 ,,plate ,,ii4 ,correct backhand grip--head of racket slightly up1 but the racket is in the same plane as the arm4 7,see ,plate ,,iii47 ,illustration3 ,,plate ,,iii4 ,incorrect backhand position--the hand and end of the racket are leading the stroke1 the line of the arm and racket being that of a wide ,v1 instead of a straight line4 ,illustration3 ,,plate ,,iv4 ,forehand grip--palm of hand behind racket1 head of racket up1 showing the wrist in an easy position1 no strain as shown in ,plate ,v4 ,illustration3 ,,plate ,v4 ,incorrect forehand grip--the head of the racket is dropped1 straining the wrist at 8,a40 ,illustration3 ,,plate ,,vi4 ,forehand grip from the back4 ,many older players1 who have taken up the game 8any old way0 and believe in 8just doing the best they can10 claim that professional teaching is useless1 as it makes a player 8all form and no play40 ,of course1 a professional cannot make a star player out of every pupil1 but he can make their best much better than it would otherwise have been1 much less tiring to the player1 and more pleasurable to the onlooker1 by teaching them the correct form1 the right way to handle themselves and their racket4 ,few start playing golf without taking lessons on how to drive1 putt1 etc41 or else reading the various articles that have been written on how to play4 ,there are just as many different strokes in tennis and just as definite ways to play them in order to attain the best and most consistent results4 ,if the player knows the science of the strokes1 when she is off her game a little thought will soon find her error2 whereas if she is playing 8hit or miss10 she will merely be disgusted at being 8off her game10 and have to trust to her lucky ,providence to get her 8on0 again4 ,a player who is 8all form0 has merely not carried her game far enough1 either has not played long enough or else has not in herself the makings of a first-class player4 ,but at least she looks well on the court1 plays a fairly consistent game and really fails only when it comes to crack tournament play4 ,as a matter of fact1 she is a player whom first-class players are always willing to play against1 for she is steady and has reasonable pace to her balls1 making her a good opponent in practise4 ,then1 too1 many people make this criticism of someone who is taking lessons1 when the pupil is really only just starting in1 and has to concentrate so much on how she is hitting the ball that she has little thought left for strategy4 ,once1 however1 a player learns how to stroke the ball correctly and how to handle herself on the court1 the rest comes rapidly4 ,but the fundamentals have to be learned first1 and learned thoroughly1 so that they become second nature to the player1 before there can be much thought of studying the tactics of play4 ,a professional1 besides being able to give his pupil the required ball again and again for the stroke under study1 can also watch and tell her what she is doing incorrectly4 ,to pick up the game alone is1 as in all things1 more difficult than to have someone pointing the way4 ,however1 learning by oneself requires greater concentration and thought on what one is doing1 and insofar is all the better training4 ,the best way to begin without professional aid is to find a smooth board wall against which the ball may be hit1 with a level cleared space in front of it4 ,it is well to draw a chalk line the height of the net1 #c feet from the ground1 so that the player may become accustomed to hitting the ball high enough4 ,by practising against this board for a while before playing any games1 the beginner can put all her attention on how she is hitting the ball4 ,she has no opponent1 no score1 to worry her1 and can become thoroughly at home with the fundamental principles of the strokes4 ,this is the practise that a girl needs more than a boy1 for it will give her the necessary training for eye and body4 ,she will learn to keep her eye on the ball1 to time her strokes correctly1 and to use her body easily and quickly in response to the demands of her eye4 ,above all1 she will be acquiring the habit of concentration1 a habit most important in tennis1 and something that no one can teach4 ,the easiest and quickest way to learn to serve is to take a half dozen or so of balls out on the court and practise hitting them in the right way into the opposite service court1 just as if a game were in progress4 ,in a very short time1 the beginner will find that she is ready to go out and hold her own against those of her friends who have been 8batting around0 for some time but without any real thought as to what they were doing4 ,it is best to learn the ground strokes first1 the strokes used against a ball that has bounced once4 ,they are more easily practised alone1 and in learning to play them correctly1 the fundamental principles which are true for all strokes will be mastered4 ,the player will learn to concentrate on what she is doing1 to keep her eye on the ball1 to time it in its flight1 and to follow through1 putting the weight of her body into the stroke4 ,the habit of keeping the eye on the ball1 of watching it throughout its flight1 is a very necessary one to acquire1 and now is the time while there is no opponent to tempt the eye away4 ,many players are so busy watching their adversary1 to know just where she is in the opposite court1 that they do not know exactly where the ball is1 and have to take a chance at hitting it squarely4 ,after all1 it is much more important to be sure of your ball1 for if you do not send the ball true1 of what use to know just where your opponent is4 ,this is the cause of the many 8scratch0 shots made on the courts1 balls hit with any part of the racket1 strings or even frame1 instead of with the center of the stringing4 ,a player must learn to keep her eye on the ball all the time1 in order that her shots may be clean and true1 and of the maximum speed1 through having her racket squarely behind the ball4 ,this habit of keeping the eye on the ball develops and includes the habit of concentration1 another very essential habit to form if one is to play first-class tennis4 ,no one can do her game justice if she allows her mind to wander the least bit from the matter at hand4 ,if she begins to think of the audience1 or the umpire1 or any of the thousand and one things that are liable to distract a player1 her mind is not wholly on her stroke1 her eye will waver1 and a scratch shot is the almost inevitable result4 ,proper footwork too1 which plays such an important part in getting the proper swing of arm and body1 comes only with constant thought4 ,in time this keeping the eye on the ball1 and using proper footwork becomes so nearly second nature that the player may use her powers of concentration on the problems of strategy which advanced play require4 ,but at all times she must keep her mind as it were within the boundaries of the court and not allow it to wander4 ,,grip ,,of ,,the ,,racket4 ,first1 the grip of the racket must be considered4 ,if the player will realize that1 as far as possible1 she must have her racket1 with face turned slightly up1 parallel to the net when hitting the ball1 she will probably hold the racket in the grip most suitable for herself4 ,lay the racket slanting across the palm1 so that the butt rests at the base of the palm1 a little to the left1 and the handle crosses the first knuckle of the first finger4 ,close the fingers about the handle1 and a comfortable1 firm grip is obtained4 ,a very slight shift is made by most players in taking a backhand shot1 the thumb being slipped diagonally across the handle1 giving a better control over the racket4 ,the racket1 as mentioned above1 should always be parallel to the net at the time that it meets the ball1 direction being given to the ball by following through with the racket in the desired line of flight of the ball4 ,the face of the racket should be slightly 8open02 that is1 turned upward a little1 not tipped towards the ground1 which position is called 8closed10 and the racket itself should be almost parallel to the ground4 ,it is well for the beginner to exaggerate this last and keep the head of her racket well up1 to overcome a natural tendency to let it drop too low4 ,if the position of the racket varies all the time1 the player will have to consider whether the head is higher or lower than usual and make due allowance in her strokes4 ,but if she always keeps it about the same1 she will know from habit just where it is4 ,the more instinctive a player can become as to the elemental parts of the game1 the more attention ,,lenglen1 ,famous ,young ,french ,player4 ,,strokes--,,the ,,drive4 ,having a firm1 but not tight1 hold of the racket1 try to make a full swing with it through the air4 ,stand sideways to the practise board1 or the net1 put the arm out straight1 parallel to the net1 then swing it up and back as far as possible1 and then down and forward1 describing a circle through the air4 ,finish the swing as far in front of the body as possible1 letting the head of the racket be the leading point4 ,it is this last part of the swing that controls the flight of the ball1 both as to direction and to length1 and so is most important4 ,always follow through4 ,the preliminary swing gives the greatest amount of speed with the least effort1 because of the momentum which is gained4 ,a long follow through gives a deep ball 7one in the back of the opponent's court71 and controls the direction more surely than does a short snap shot4 ,the beginner should therefore spend plenty of time and attention getting a full1 free swing4 ,swing the arm and racket around and forward several times without any ball4 ,then1 standing sideways to the net or board1 with the left foot forward1 drop a ball opposite the body and swing the racket so as to meet it at the top of its bound1 following forward with the racket in the direction that the ball is to take4 ,the whole body should swing forward from the hips1 the weight being shifted from the right foot to the left as the arm goes forward4 ,few girls1 until recently1 used this full swing1 although it is very important that they should use it1 as it is a great saver of energy1 speed being given to the ball1 not by hitting it hard1 but by the impetus gained through the preliminary swing together with the weight of the body which is behind the stroke4 ,a straight forehand drive1 used principally against a low bouncing ball1 starts with the full swing and finishes out and up1 the face of the racket open and drawn slightly across the ball at the finish of the stroke4 ,a topped drive finishes with the wrist and racket turning over1 so that the face of the racket is towards the ground4 ,this turnover starts the ball spinning around on its own axis1 giving it 8drop02 that is1 causing it to drop rather sharply to the ground when it has reached the limit of its outward flight4 ,this marked downcurve makes it much easier to keep the ball within the limits of the court and so is very useful4 ,the backhand drive1 which should not be neglected1 but rather should receive more attention at the beginning because it is a little more difficult to make1 is based on the same general principles4 ,grip the racket1 having the thumb diagonally across the handle1 keeping the wrist well in towards the body--there is a tendency on the backhand to let the wrist break1 point out towards the net1 and so lead the swing1 which must be guarded against4 ,stand sideways to the net1 the right foot forward1 and swing the arm1 wrist in and elbow nearly straight1 across the body1 making a circle as before1 with the head of the racket as the leading point4 ,then follow through forward1 shifting the weight of the body onto the right foot and swinging forward from the hips4 ,as in the forehand1 there are two ways of finishing the swing1 producing two different drives3 one1 the straight drive1 where the racket goes out and up1 sliding slightly across the ball2 the other1 the topped stroke1 where the racket and wrist turn over as the arm swings forward4 ,first practise the swing alone until it feels free and easy4 ,then drop the ball in front of you1 but slightly nearer the net than in the forehand drive1 where the ball is taken opposite the body1 and stroke it1 making the full swing as in practise and following through in the direction in which the ball is to go4 ,in practising all these drives1 be sure to stand far enough away from the ball4 ,the elbow should be only slightly bent to get a full swing--if the ball is taken too close to the body the elbow will be cramped1 and so hamper the swing4 ,illustration3 ,miss ,eleonora ,sears at finish of overhead smash4 ,international ,film ,service1 ,n4 ,y4 ,illustration3 the ground strokes till the swing feels easy1 the beginner should go on the court with a number of balls4 ,standing sideways to the net1 behind the baseline1 she should make a half circle back1 with arm and racket extended1 bringing the racket up over the head4 ,here the racket is dropped behind the head and swung in a small circle from left to right--much as an ,indian club is swung--then up and out in the follow through4 ,the ball is tossed high in the air and struck as the racket reaches the top of its swing4 ,then the racket follows out with the ball just as far as possible1 as in the ground strokes4 ,the various cut services depend on the way the face of the racket meets the ball1 how it cuts around or over the ball4 ,it is best1 however1 for the beginner to practise a straight service until she is well grounded in the fundamentals4 ,meanwhile she should try to place the serve not only in the correct court but also in some definite part of that court4 ,a well-placed service will prove as effective as any fancy serve for ordinary play4 ,remember these points while practising3 get a full swing1 hit the ball at the highest point possible1 and follow through as in the drive1 here1 too1 getting the weight of the body into the stroke4 ,,the ,,lob ,,and ,,the ,,volley4 ,with these shots well in hand1 the beginner has all she needs to start in playing4 ,but there are still the lob and the volley to take up4 ,if she is starting to learn with some friend1 it is well to spend a little while each day practising lobbing1 the one to the other4 ,because girls formerly spent most of their time lobbing the ball1 now they have gone to the other extreme and consider it beneath their dignity to lob at all1 that 8lobbing is not playing the game40 ,however1 a good lob at the right time is often a 8lifesaver40 ,it gives the player time to get back into position if she has been drawn far out of court returning the ball1 and also it gives her a chance to get her breath if she is being hard pressed4 ,in doubles1 and against a net player in singles1 it is indispensable1 as will be shown later4 ,a lob is merely a ball knocked up into the air1 with a slight forward movement4 ,it should be high enough to be out of reach of the net player and deep enough to force her to run away back for it4 ,if it is too short--that is1 too close to the net--the opponent will 8kill0 it1 smash it back so hard that it is almost impossible to handle1 or else put it close to the side lines near the net1 where it is hard to reach4 ,lobbing is an art which comes only with practise4 ,the player should again and again hit the ball firmly upwards1 watching the result of the shots1 seeing whether they are deep enough1 etc41--gaining through this constant practise the necessary touch4 ,while one player is practising lobbing1 the other will be learning how to return the ball4 ,to smash it1 stand sideways to the net1 left foot forward1 and swing at the ball as it drops1 just as in serving4 ,it is best to be directly under the ball for a smash4 ,do not try to hit it too hard at first1 and be careful to keep your eye on the ball4 ,this practise is splendid training1 both for learning to keep the eye on the ball and for timing it so that it is struck at just the right second4 ,illustration3 ,very good illustration of ,miss ,bjurstedt at finish of not at all beyond the powers of a girl to conquer4 ,in doubles1 net play is indispensable1 if half hour rallies are to be avoided1 and in singles it is a great aid as a point winner4 ,a girl cannot rush the net continuously1 for she has not the necessary endurance or speed4 ,but many times she has a chance to finish a point at the net or else is drawn in by her opponent with a short ball4 ,here1 with no time to get back1 it is necessary that she be able to handle her volley shots properly4 ,it requires a quick eye1 level head and ready muscular response to make a good net player4 ,practise at the net1 therefore1 helps one's other strokes1 through the deftness and agility acquired4 ,but the ground strokes must be in good working order before a player can develop a net game1 for she must be able to place the ball deep1 with sufficient speed1 and in the right place1 in order to give herself a fair chance to run in4 ,two beginners can1 however1 get splendid all around training if the one practises volley shots while the other is driving from the back court4 ,in volleying1 more than in any other stroke1 the player must concentrate2 keep her eye on the ball1 try to anticipate her opponent's shot--foresee where it is going to cross the net1 and think and act quickly but deliberately4 ,in volleying there is very little preliminary swing1 the racket being raised and drawn back only a little1 then forward and slightly down across the face of the ball4 ,never hit up in volleying4 ,if the ball has fallen below the level of the net--a predicament to be avoided where possible by stepping up and hitting the ball before it drops--the racket is drawn more sharply under and across the ball4 ,direction is given by drawing the racket through in the desired line4 ,the wrist should be firm1 and the shot made with precision4 ,a loosely held racket and loose wrist result in the stop-volley-shot1 one a beginner should leave alone1 for it requires a great deal of practise and a very keen touch4 ,cut may be used in any stroke in tennis4 ,it consists merely in hitting across the surface of the ball one way or another1 during the follow through1 according to the cut desired4 ,the chop stroke is one in which there is practically no preliminary swing1 a sharp cut being given the ball at the moment of striking it2 the shot is very similar to the ordinary volley shot4 ,it is advisable1 however1 for the beginner to leave the cut game alone and develop a good drive and service4 ,once the fundamentals of the game become instinctive she can experiment with different shots1 and study the science of the actual play4 ,but until she can consistently place the ball where she wants it1 with the desired speed1 there is no use learning what tactics to use4 ,,playing ,,the ,,game4 ,in the beginning a player1 whether she wants to go into tournament play later or not1 should spend her time learning to swing properly and to follow through2 to keep her eye on the ball1 and time her stroke correctly1 trying always to hit the ball at the top of its bound1 thus saving time2 to get her footwork right1 that is1 always be in such a position that the weight of the body can go into the stroke4 ,she should try in practising always to put the ball into some definite part of the court1 in order to acquire 8control0 of the ball4 ,just hitting it hard1 with very little idea of where it is going1 is of no use in playing4 ,let her learn to place her ball well and get good length1 that is1 keep the ball well back in her opponent's court1 and she will soon find that she can get the desired speed when she wants it4 ,most beginners try to make a point out of every shot--8ace0 every ball4 ,this is1 of course1 impossible and results in a wildly erratic game1 of no interest to the opponent and little advantage to the player1 for all idea of how the ball should be played is lost in the desire to hit it hard4 ,rather play with the idea of keeping the ball in court1 placing it where it seems most difficult for the other side to return it4 ,by watching the result of these efforts the beginner will soon gain a knowledge of court positions1 where to put the ball and where she should be herself for the return4 ,this1 however1 comes under the heading of science of lawn tennis1 on which subject a number of interesting books have been written4 ,it is better for the beginner not to bother too much about that1 but rather to develop her strokes1 learning to be on her toes every minute1 eye on the ball1 every bit of her concentrated on the work in hand4 ,as less attention is required by the actual making of the strokes1 more can be given to the tactics of the game4 ,it is a good plan1 where possible1 to watch experienced players on the court1 see how they plan their shots1 keeping their opponents in trouble and themselves out of it4 ,a girl cannot1 of course1 gain much from studying those boys who rush the net on all occasion1 for she has neither the speed nor the endurance necessary for this style of play4 ,but let her watch those men who play a good all around game1 see what their general style of play is1 what balls they go in on1 what they do when they get to the net1 when they stay back1 etc41 and adapt what she sees to her own style of play4 ,there is no reason why she should not develop a similar all around game1 enabling her to make a good showing against the best of the players1 provided always that she is well grounded in the fundamentals of the game1 keeps her eye on the ball and is alert mentally and physically all the time4 ,even in doubles there is no reason why1 with practise1 girls cannot develop a good game1 taking the net as the men do and so putting an end to the interminable rallies which mostly constitute 8girls' doubles40 ,the net position in doubles is more tenable than in singles1 for the passing shots are much fewer and more easily guarded against2 and as for the lob1 which seems to be the deterrent factor in most cases1 there is no reason why girls cannot go back under a lob1 provided they will go sideways and not try to run backwards1 a very difficult feat4 ,there are a few teams of girls who take the net position and hold it successfully1 thus proving that there is no real reason why other teams may not try the same tactics and so gradually do away with the present deadly monotonous form of women's doubles4 ,,general ,,tactics4 ,for the benefit of those who have no opportunity to watch good playing and so work out for themselves the general tactics of the game1 and since those who have that chance can watch more intelligently if they have some idea of what is being attempted1 the following general summary has been written4 ,if you do not know what to look for1 it is difficult to gather much about the general tactics of the game just from observation4 ,but with more or less knowledge of the ground work of the game1 the student can learn a great deal from watching others1 seeing what they are trying to do and how they are doing it4 ,singles is the better game for the beginner to start with1 for she is playing all the time and so gets much more practise in 8strokes40 ,for the girl beginner it is particularly useful1 for it necessitates constant attention on the part of the player2 she must be on her toes and working every minute of the time4 ,thus she develops the habits of concentration and alertness1 which will later prove invaluable to her4 ,illustration3 ,miss ,bjurstedt caught in a difficult position--a backhand half-volley4 ,underwood ,underwood1 ,n4 ,y4 boy's game1 for if he has a good service he will speedily be camped down near the net1 thus putting his opponent on the defensive4 ,first service is also an advantage to the girl1 even though she cannot rush the net4 ,for one thing1 it helps to get all her muscles in play1 to limber her up2 so much so that if one is not to serve the first game1 it is well to send over a few service balls during the knock-up or practise just before the game starts4 ,the server1 even in the baseline game1 has a certain advantage1 for a good serve can often be so placed that it will put the opponent on the defensive1 so that she has to be content merely with getting the ball back and the server then has a good chance for a winning shot4 ,it must not be gathered from this1 however1 that points are always won so quickly4 ,the game is one of manuvring until one side or the other is drawn into such a position that the ball is out of reach or very difficult to return4 ,this manuvring is done by so 8placing0 the ball that the opponent is eventually drawn out of position1 or off her balance2 that is1 is in such a position that she cannot make her stroke properly4 ,it is easily seen1 therefore1 why it is of such importance to be able to place the ball approximately in any desired spot4 ,speed alone is of no use1 for a player of any experience can soon learn to handle a fast ball4 ,accuracy plus speed1 of course1 enables the player to get her opponent into difficulties more easily1 for there is less time for court covering1 but a fair degree of accuracy must first be attained2 the greater the accuracy the more chance that the stroke will be effective4 ,this is often illustrated when two players--one steady and able to place the ball where she wants1 the other speedy but lacking in control--are pitted against each other4 ,the steady one will usually win1 for her percentage of 8outs0 and 8nets0 is much smaller1 owing to the fact that she is seldom out of position and is playing her shots with care4 ,in fact1 there is no use hitting every ball hard anyway4 ,vary the speed so that the opponent will have to pay more attention to timing her shots1 allowing her that much less thought for the actual play of the point4 ,rather reserve your speed for shooting a fast one into an opening in the opponent's court1 which you have made by getting her out of position4 ,an 8opening0 is that portion of the court that the opponent1 owing to her position1 cannot protect4 ,the server should try to place the ball in that part of the service court which seems to bother her opponent most4 ,put it where it must be returned by a backhand drive if that seems to be the opponent's weak shot1 or vary the corners into which you hit the ball4 ,it is well to try to keep the ball as near the service line as possible without 8faulting10 for the greater depth to the ball will give the server just so much more time to get ready to return it4 ,if you are not going to rush the net on service--and it does not seem advisable for girls to try it1 as it is too tiring--stay back of the baseline to receive the return of service4 ,remember in playing that whenever you are not well inside the service line1 8playing net10 you should stay behind the baseline4 ,otherwise you will find the ball bouncing at your feet1 and very difficult to handle4 ,if you are behind the baseline1 however1 all the balls will bounce in front of you1 and you can judge them more easily4 ,if you find that the return is to be short1 you can simply step forward to meet the ball4 ,having returned a comparatively short ball1 either get back behind the baseline or move closer to the net1 so as to be able to volley the next ball and finish the point4 ,a volleyed ball should always be returned very deep and with a wide angle1 unless it is so short and wide of angle that the opponent cannot reach it4 7,the word 8angle0 in tennis is used in speaking of the relative position of the line of flight of the ball to the net47 ,a short ball puts the volleyer at the mercy of her opponent1 for the ball comes back so quickly that it is extremely difficult to anticipate4 ,then1 too1 there is more chance of a passing shot4 ,to handle the net position successfully the player must keep cool and not be in too great a hurry to hit the ball1 and when she does hit it1 must do so with a firm wrist and steady forward sweep of the racket4 ,she must not get upset by her errors4 ,even if at first a great many balls are missed there is no reason to get discouraged1 for it is no more disastrous1 though more noticeable1 to lose a point at the net than it is to lose it from the backcourt4 ,watch the good men players2 they miss many volley shots1 too4 ,it is only because a girl tries so few that her mistakes are so prominent4 ,if the player has been drawn to the net on a short ball1 or has made her own shot deep and well placed with the idea of going to the net1 she must be on the lookout for a lob on the return4 ,this lob is a perfectly good weapon for the opponent to use1 although girls have a tendency to scorn it at present1 owing to its former abuse4 ,by carefully watching her opponent1 the player will soon be able to tell from the way she handles her racket whether she is going to lob or not4 ,even if she does try one1 a perfect lob--deep enough so that it cannot be killed and low enough that the player cannot run back and return it--is very difficult to make4 ,it requires much practise and a very keen touch4 ,if two or three short lobs are successfully smashed1 the opponent is apt to fight shy of that particular form of defense and will go back to the passing shots to try to win the point4 ,from the other point of view1 if the first few lobs are too short or too high1 the player should try several more1 endeavoring to correct her error1 so that in an emergency she will not be afraid to use the lob4 ,furthermore1 not all short lobs are successfully smashed4 ,the opposing side may miss it entirely or may return it in such a way that it can be easily handled--either not severe enough or not well placed4 ,several unsuccessful smashes will go far toward upsetting the player1 for in no stroke is self-confidence more needed and sooner lost than in smashing4 ,this is a department of the game that girls have very much neglected1 but1 as has already been shown1 it is one that is very important1 not only for actual use in the game but as training for both eye and judgment4 ,the smash must be hit at exactly the right second1 pretty well in the center of the racket4 ,there is no reason why girls cannot learn to smash4 ,they have fought shy of the stroke because they have not been willing to devote the necessary time to practising it1 and in part because a bad smash is so conspicuous an error4 ,a good smash is a pretty sure point winner and is a constant menace to the would-be lobber2 so is well worth cultivating4 ,indeed1 without good overhead work it is rather useless to attempt net play1 for the opponent has too obvious and sure a method of defense in her lob2 and the player who deprives herself of this form of the game loses much of the thrill of the game4 ,with the inveterate baseline player the game resolves itself into a patient striving for openings--and so loses much of its snap and vigor4 ,a girl must1 however1 as a rule1 play the major part of her singles game from the back court1 going to the net only when drawn in or when she has a fair chance to finish the rally4 ,of course1 there are exceptions to this1 as to every rule4 ,some good players1 for instance1 play the net game consistently4 ,but most girls will find that they cannot last through a three-set match with this style of play1 it is too tiring4 ,but they should be able to vary their backcourt game by going to the net occasionally4 ,in order that they may handle the ball properly when they have the chance1 a good deal of attention should be given to the volley and the smash while practising4 ,when in the back court try to return the ball where your opponent cannot easily reach it--keep it near the sidelines instead of returning it down the center of the court1 a habit formed through fear of putting the ball out4 ,make your opponent run1 that she may tire the more quickly and may often be off her balance when she has to hit the ball4 ,but do not be afraid to run for the ball2 be on your toes every minute of play and do not be afraid of a long rally4 ,many players feel that they are not playing well unless they finish the point quickly4 ,this leads to a wild hitting of the ball in an effort to smash it through the opponents defense1 and the percentage of errors is very high4 ,keep the ball in play1 trying to force the other player 8out of position0--either off balance by sending the ball where she does not expect it or by forcing her far out of court on one side or the other1 then sending the ball into the unprotected space4 ,of course1 a certain amount of speed is always necessary1 for on a slow ball1 no matter how well placed1 the opponent can usually get comfortably into position for the return4 ,the point to bear in mind is that speed without placement will seldom win a point4 ,illustration3 ,miss ,marion ,zinderstein at the finish of a chop volley shot4 ,note her position1 as shown by the side line behind her1 ,inc41 ,n4 ,y4 ,all of the foregoing is particularly true in doubles4 ,if a player is not out of position1 she should be able to handle almost any swift ball4 ,in doubles it is very difficult to get the opponents out of position and the possible openings are much fewer and harder to make4 ,that is why when four girls are playing1 all in the backcourt1 the rallies are so long and monotonous4 ,each side is trying to out-manuvre the other and make a hole through which to shoot the ball4 ,but with two persons on guard1 these holes are not easily made and the rally is more apt to end in one side finally either netting the ball or putting it 8out40 ,points are seldom won4 ,this is good training in accuracy and steadiness1 but the fun and excitement is mostly minus4 ,if1 however1 net play is introduced into the game1 the story is quite different4 ,more and more this fact is being recognized and girls are devoting more attention to their volleying4 ,at present many teams are composed of one net and one backcourt player4 ,against two backcourt players this is a very effective combination4 ,however1 it forces the backcourt player to carry most of the burden4 ,the girl at the net is too apt to take only those balls which are right on her racket4 ,instead of which she should try to return everything within possible reach1 so as to save her partner as much as she can4 ,these returns should be1 as in singles1 either very deep and wide1 or else close to the net and very much crosscourt4 ,this latter is the more effective in doubles1 for the deep shot is too easily returned when there are two players guarding the back territory4 ,the baseline player must always keep the ball deep 7near the baseline71 for otherwise she is putting her partner at the mercy of the other side4 ,she must be ready to cover practically all the back court4 ,but1 on the other hand1 she should not back her partner too closely on the latter's shots4 ,many girls come right in behind their net partner1 as if sure she is going to miss1 thus almost making her miss the point solely through lack of self-confidence4 ,the baseline player must guard her own side1 but she must be on the constant lookout for a lob over her partner's head or for a wide crosscourt behind her partner4 ,then she must cross over to return the ball1 her partner likewise crossing to cover the unprotected court4 ,the net player1 however1 must take as many chances1 try for as much as possible1 in order to assist her partner--not be content1 as many girls are1 to take only the inevitable1 sure shots4 ,this combination is productive of much more interesting and much faster tennis than is the baseline combination4 ,but it is less effective than the baseline combination when matched against a team that takes the net4 ,then the backcourt player has no choice but to lob1 and if that be short1 the net player is practically helpless4 ,she cannot hope to return the expected smash1 the ball comes too quickly for her to anticipate it 7guess just where it is coming and be ready for it7 and with too much downward force for her to handle it1 even if she could get her racket on it4 ,she is also at a disadvantage1 for she stands a fair chance of being hit by a fast drive4 ,it is very hard to drive successfully through the opponents1 for with two persons covering the net the openings are very small1 down the center being about the best chance1 for then there is apt to be confusion as to who should take the ball1 whereas the openings for the net players are proportionately large4 ,they have an easy chance to volley the ball deep and very wide1 behind the opposite net player1 or else very short and wide1 to the other side of the court4 ,the disadvantage of the all-net game comes from the lobbed ball4 ,girls are very much afraid of 8being lobbed40 ,but1 by carefully watching the opponent's racket1 a lob can usually be foreseen1 and the players ready to go back under it4 ,this anticipation is the result only of much practise and of keen concentration on the game4 ,moreover1 even if a few lobs are counted against the net players1 of what matter so long as the percentage of points thus lost is not too great8 ,the advantages gained by taking the net will usually more than offset this disadvantage4 ,if1 however1 the opposing team are lobbing unusually deep and accurately1 it is well for the net team to change their tactics and stay back for a while4 ,but do not be afraid of a possible lob1 and stay back after the first ball missed4 ,the chances of a lob being either out or else so short that it is an easy kill are in your favor2 give yourself a fair trial before staying back4 ,it is easier for girls to develop a net doubles game than a singles game1 for doubles is naturally a much less tiring game4 ,there is less court to cover1 the service comes less frequently1 and the odds are more in the net player's favor4 ,the best women players are more and more inclining towards the net position in doubles1 and by so doing are broadening and developing their whole game1 improving the quality of their singles as well1 through their increased familiarity with net play4 ,,mixed ,,doubles4 ,opinion as to court position in mixed doubles seems to be divided in the minds of the men who play it1 some men preferring the girl to take the net and stay there under all circumstances1 letting the man do his share of the net play1 and all the backcourt work4 ,others insist that as a girl is naturally a baseline player1 her job should be to guard the back court while the man plays at the net4 ,this latter seems the more logical of the two plans1 for it gives both players their natural positions4 ,furthermore1 a man is usually much more effective in his volleying than the girl1 no matter how good she may be4 ,but as girls develop their net play1 devoting more time to their volleying and their overhead work1 both in singles and in doubles1 they will quickly learn to do their fair share of work in mixed doubles and not merely occupy a small portion of the court4 ,they will play it as a regular doubles game1 with both partners up or back together1 making it much more interesting for all concerned4 ,,tournament ,,play4 ,tournament play does not appeal to everyone4 ,but those who enter into it find that it improves their game a great deal4 ,they become much more keen1 they have to develop greater concentrative powers1 they become used to dealing with many different styles of play1 they learn 8never to say die10 for no match is won or lost until the last point is played4 ,this1 however1 is an advanced form of play that is well covered by a number of interesting books and that has no place in a 8book for beginners40 ,it often has been said of girls that they are not 8good sports40 ,this was no doubt more or less true in years past4 ,but as girls go more and more to boarding school and college1 play on teams and generally have to consider themselves a small part of a big whole1 they are learning how to behave in the field of sports1 to take what comes with a smile4 ,remember1 before all things1 no matter how trying the
