,,outside and inside4 ,how different they are6 ,i remember a very ugly looking house1 which ,i used to love as a little girl4 ,it faced the street1 with straight rows of windows1 bare and square1 and not a creeper or flower to be seen4 ,but inside1 what a delicious comfortable house it was6 ,and a lovely old garden behind1 hidden and surrounded by high walls4 ,all the flowers1 all the beautiful china and pictures1 and pretty old-fashioned furniture were to be seen after you entered it1 and not before4 ,i have seen many pretty looking houses since1 some quite charming with their gabled windows and creeper clad walls1 yet some of them inside1 are damp and ugly and uncomfortable4 ,when you go to a bookseller's to choose yourself a book do you choose it for its cover1 or for the story inside8 ,some of the dryest dullest books have the most handsome binding1 and some of the most thrilling stories are wrapped up in a very poor cover4 ,which do you value most1 the envelope1 or the letter inside8 ,your purse1 or the money that is in it8 ,do you like best the shell of a nut1 or the kernel inside8 ,which is most important1 the case of a clock or watch1 or the works inside8 ,do you like the outside of your chocolate box best1 or the chocolates inside8 ,outside and inside6 ,nearly always the inside of a thing is the thing that matters4 ,the outside is a mere case or covering for the treasure within4 ,so it is with us4 ,we are so apt to judge people by the outside look of them4 ,it is one of the pathetic facts in life1 that pretty children1 and beautiful girls1 and handsome boys1 get most love from the world around them4 ,and yet their souls inside may not be nearly so beautiful as plain featured children4 ,a crooked body may contain a lovely soul4 ,a lovely body may contain a crooked and distorted soul4 ,outside and inside--how different they may be4 ,our verse says3 ,man looketh on the outward appearance1 but the ,lord looketh on the heart4 ,i want you to sit still for a few minutes and think about this4 ,you have your outside1 and your inside4 ,your body and your soul4 ,your body is simply a case for your soul1 to be the means of moving and thinking and talking and acting as your soul desires4 ,i am not going to confuse you by talking about your mind1 or intellect1 or spirit4 ,we are composed of soul and body4 ,our souls are the only part of us that matters1 for they can never die2 our body may wear out1 and die1 drop away from us like an old garment1 but our souls live on4 ,they are the living part of us that ,god loves and guards1 that ,he sent ,his only ,son to die for1 because ,he wanted them in ,heaven above4 ,a great many people care for your body4 ,your parents rightly try to keep it in health4 ,they send for a doctor if your body is hurt or ill4 ,they feed it1 and buy clothes for it4 ,nearly all the shops in a big town are selling things for your body4 ,it needs a lot of things to keep it well4 ,food and drink1 fires in winter1 a soft bed at night for its rest and refreshment4 ,shelter from storm1 shade from great heat4 ,some of us take the greatest care of our bodies1 but never1 never think of the welfare of our souls4 ,now in these little chats with you1 ,i want to get at your souls1 to the inside thinking1 loving part of you1 to the bit of you that ought to be touching ,god and living with ,him1 whilst your bodies are running about and enjoying this beautiful earth4 ,god thinks most about your souls1 or hearts1 as they are often called in the ,bible4 ,what kind of a soul have you8 ,you are taught to take care of your body1 to feed it1 to clothe it1 not to do things which might hurt it4 ,your parents want your body to grow bigger and stronger every year4 ,is your soul growing bigger and stronger too8 ,are you feeding it8 ,does it get hurt or damaged8 ,now it may be comparatively easy to take care of our bodies1 but it is quite impossible for us to take care of our souls4 ,there is only ,one ,person who made them1 and who knows just what they want1 and has the right food to give them4 ,this ,person you know is ,god4 ,we are told that when our bodies die1 our spirits or souls return to ,god who gave them to us4 ,they belong to ,god4 ,he is the only ,one who can keep them safely1 and make them grow strong and beautiful4 ,we may not all have beautiful bodies1 but we can all have beautiful souls1 if we hand them over to ,god to keep4 ,is this difficult to do8 ,let us talk about it a little4 ,the ,devil wants to get possession of your souls to destroy them4 ,he tries to keep us away from ,god because he knows that our souls will thrive and blossom into beauty1 and be kept in perfect safety if we hand them over to ,god4 ,so he employs different means of keeping us far away from ,god4 ,he surrounds us with boys and girls who never think about their souls at all1 and they persuade us that saying prayers and reading the ,bible1 and going to ,church or ,chapel1 is all very dull and stupid4 ,we must have a jolly time1 and enjoy ourselves1 and whatever we do1 must never turn pi1 or be a prig4 ,then lessons1 and games1 and treats all follow each other so quickly that we feel we haven't time to think about ,god4 ,we are too busy1 too occupied1 too full of interesting plans and purposes to think about our souls4 ,the ,devil takes care to keep us busy4 ,what can we do8 ,only one thing4 ,come straight to the ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 kneel down in any quiet corner1 ask ,him when we go to bed at night1 and when we get up in the morning to take our soul into ,his loving keeping4 ,he will do the rest4 ,he will remind us just in time before we are going to give way to temper1 before we're going to tell a lie2 ,he will give us courage to stand up for the right1 and to refuse to join in any wrong doing1 and ,he will give us sunshine and happiness in our souls4 ,we are told that ,he is able to keep what is committed to ,him4 ,he will never fail us4 ,god has loved our souls so much that ,he sent ,christ to save them from the ,devil's hold and power4 ,he will wash them in ,his precious ,blood and hold them in ,his keeping till ,he calls them to the golden ,unseen ,land above4 ,will you to-day give your soul1 your heart to ,god8 ,may ,he help you to do so4 ,illustration3 ,,chat ,,ii4 ,a ,real ,toy ,boat4 ,illustration3 ,pictures to ,paint--#b4 ,,what ,,bible ,,scene ,perhaps one of you may have made a real toy boat and taken it down to the pond to sail it4 ,how anxious you were to see if it was a success or a failure6 ,how pleased you were when some grown up person took it into his hand and looked at it1 and said1 ,it does you credit6 ,think how busy people are1 all over the world1 making things--watches1 clocks1 motors1 aeroplanes1 guns1 books1 pictures1 machines of all sorts and sizes4 ,if you talk to them1 you will soon find that they are all anxious about one thing1 and that is for their work and invention to be a success1 to fulfil the purpose for which they made it4 ,they want their watches and clocks to keep good time1 their motors and air machines to move swiftly and easily1 and not to be failures4 ,they don't want their inventions to lie useless and idle1 and what is the good of them if they do that8 ,almighty ,god has made this world and all the wonderful and beautiful things in it1 but of all the things that ,he has made1 the most precious in ,his sight is a human soul4 ,there are a great many of us4 ,some are black1 some are white1 some are born in rich circumstances1 some in poverty4 ,some are strong4 ,some are weak4 ,but we are all ,his workmanship1 and ,he made us--each one of us for a purpose4 ,ask yourself this question3 ,for what purpose did ,god make me8 ,why did ,he want me in the world8 ,this is quite certain4 ,god put you in this world to carry out some work for ,him4 ,he made you for it4 ,and ,he wants you to be a success and not a failure2 ,he wants you to bring ,him credit4 ,as the ,bible says1 you were created for ,his glory4 ,have you brought ,god any glory by your life8 ,do people want to follow ,christ because of you8 ,now1 does this seem impossible8 ,have you a garden8 ,and have you any fruit trees in it8 ,if so1 in the autumn you will expect fruit from them4 ,a gardener once said to a lady who was walking round the garden of which he had charge3 ,i always have success with my plants4 ,i never keep anything that does not bring me credit4 ,if plants don't flower as they ought1 ,i pitch them away2 if my apples won't bear1 ,i root them up4 ,ah6 ,how good1 and patient1 and long-suffering is our ,heavenly ,father with ,his plants and fruit trees6 ,what fruit are you bearing for ,him8 ,what sweet scented flowers are blossoming on your stalk8 ,have you been a failure or a success in ,his garden8 ,his workmanship6 ,think of it when you are quarrelling and stamping with rage1 when you're sulking1 when you're telling untruths1 and doing things in secret which you know you ought not to do4 ,god's workmanship6 ,did ,he make me for this8 ,i am not bringing ,him credit4 ,i am bringing dishonour upon my ,maker4 ,i am like a watch that won't keep time1 that is useless1 that is no good to anyone4 ,there are several failures mentioned in the ,bible4 ,there is the case of the fig tree that never bore any figs4 ,there were the lamps without oil1 the lamps that gave no light to the ,virgins who held them4 ,there was the case of a watchman who was blind4 ,and there were wells without water4 ,there are boys and girls now running about and enjoying themselves4 ,having a good time1 and only thinking of pleasing themselves4 ,they are fruit trees in ,god's garden4 ,yet so far they have never brought ,him fruit1 though ,he comes again and again so patiently and lovingly1 to see if there is any sign or beginning of fruit bearing4 ,they are lamps made to shine for their ,master1 but no light comes from them4 ,they are useless4 ,they are wanted to be watchmen for ,god1 looking out for the coming of their ,master1 telling others about ,him and warning them of danger when it comes4 ,but they see nothing4 ,they are blind4 ,they are wells4 ,made by ,god to contain the ,water of ,life1 and to be the means of refreshing and watering others4 ,but they are dry and empty1 or filled with rubbish1 choked with refuse--and not a drop of water in them4 ,god's workmanship6 ,and yet such a failure6 ,well1 you say1 ,i can't help myself4 ,it comes natural to me4 ,i can't be good4 ,do you want to be good8 ,to be what ,god means you to be8 ,i heard a preacher once say that at the ,judgment ,day when we shall all have to appear before our ,maker1 it may be that a picture will be held up before us1 a picture of what ,god meant us to be when ,he made us and put us in this world4 ,and as we look upon it1 and think of what we might have been1 and what we have been1 we shall be filled with horror1 and regret1 and remorse4 ,the contrast will condemn us so utterly6 ,how can we be a success instead of a failure8 ,if a watch or machine goes wrong1 the best thing is to take it back to its maker4 ,he will put it right1 even if he has to make it over again4 ,dear boys and girls1 if you take yourself back to your ,maker1 and put yourselves in ,his hands to be made what ,he wants you to be1 ,he will do it4 ,the fact is1 we were never meant to live a single day in this world without ,god helping and holding us4 ,the ,lord ,jesus ,christ came to die for our sins1 but ,he also came to show us how to live in this world with ,god holding our hands4 ,kneel down in some quiet corner by yourself1 and ask ,god to take your soul into ,his keeping and never let you go4 ,you don't know what a difference it will make in your life4 ,you will not be less happy1 but much more happy4 ,and ,he will be able to teach you and show you your work day by day4 ,and if you do it1 you will bring glory instead of dishonour upon the ,one who made you4 ,for we are ,his workmanship1 will tell you in a few minutes4 ,just before the ,lord ,jesus died ,he told ,his disciples ,he was going away from them to prepare a ,place for them in ,god's ,house which is ,heaven4 ,he said3 ,you
