,,christianity ,the heart of the ,christian religion is found in ,jesus ,christ4 ,if we desire to know what ,christianity is and of what elements it is composed we must look to ,him and ,his teachings4 ,he is the great source of our knowledge of what ,god1 man1 sin1 righteousness1 duty and salvation are4 ,our interest in the books of the ,old ,testament lies in the fact that they lead up to ,him4 ,we study the books of the ,new ,testament because of their vivid portrayal of ,his life1 teachings1 death and resurrection4 ,with ,jesus ,christ a new era dawned for the world with new principles1 ideas and aspirations for humanity4 ,his teachings touch every department of human life and1 where they are accepted and followed1 they show their marvellous transforming power4 ,there can be no more important study than what ,jesus ,christ said and did while upon this earth4 ,never man spake like this man 7,john #g3df74 ,,what ,,christ ,,taught ,there are five great lines which ,his teachings followed2 they have to do with ,god1 man1 sin1 salvation and the future life4 ,the ,right ,relation of ,god to ,man and ,man to ,god4--,how does ,god regard man8 and1 ,how shall man look upon ,god8 are questions upon which the best thought of men in all ages has been expended4 ,upon the answers given have been founded all sorts of religious and philosophical systems4 ,man in this great universe desires to know in what relation he stands to the ,author of it4 ,is man only a creature of fate8 ,what does ,god care1 great as ,he is1 for one man8 ,jesus ,christ recognized this desire of man to know his standing with ,god and ,he proclaimed not only the power1 but the ,fatherhood of ,god4 ,when ,he taught ,his disciples how to pray ,he began ,his immortal prayer not with ,great ,god of the universe1 or ,creator of all things1 but ,after this manner therefore pray ye3 ,our ,father which art in heaven 7,matthew #f3i74 ,here was a new conception of ,god4 ,through ,christ man comes into personal relations with ,god as the ,father 7,john #af3bg7 who cares for him as a son4 ,man is to love and forgive as ,god loves and forgives in this relation of ,father 7,matthew #bb3cg2 #f3ad1ae74 ,man is to do all that he does as in the sight of his ,father in heaven 7,matthew #f3a-bf74 ,god is made known as supreme love 7,john #c3af74 ,the ,right ,relation of ,man to ,man4--,there are many causes which divide men into classes1 castes and nationalities4 ,once divided men begin to develop a class feeling and pride which tend to deepen and widen the gulfs which separate them from each other4 ,with the truth proclaimed by ,christ of the ,fatherhood of ,god came also the great truth of the ,brotherhood of ,man4 ,the true relation of man to man1 no matter what the caste1 class1 employment or nationality1 is that of sons who have a common father4 ,the second great commandment given by ,christ is1 ,thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself 7,matthew #bb3ci74 ,when ,he took the example for a good neighbour ,he selected a ,samaritan1 a man of an alien race4 ,men are naturally inclined to do good to those who treat them well and whose help they need2 but ,christ1 in carrying out this new law of brotherly love said1 ,love your enemies1 bless them that curse you1 do good to them that hate you1 and pray for them which despitefully use you1 and persecute you1 that ye may be the children of your ,father which is in heaven 7,matthew #e3dd-dh74 ,it is only through this love of man for man1 no matter what the class or condition1 that right relations between men can ever be established and maintained4 ,the ,right ,relation of ,man to ,sin4--,man violates his sense of righteousness and justice4 ,he transgresses the laws of ,god and his nature4 ,man's sin is everywhere doing its destroying work4 ,there is individual1 social1 corporate and national sin 7,romans #c3bc74 ,this fact of sin is not only set forth in the ,bible in unmistakable terms1 but every government recognizes it in its laws and courts of justice4 ,society puts up its bars to protect itself against the sinner1 and all literature proclaims the evil results of sin4 ,what ought to be man's attitude to sin8 ,shall he make light of it and call it a necessary part of living8 ,shall he continue in it1 although he recognizes its evil results1 and draw others with him into greater and larger violations of the laws of ,god and man8 ,these are practical questions4 ,some temporize with sin and say1 ,let us lead outwardly correct lives1 but within certain bounds we will do as we please2 hence arises the practice of secret sinning4 ,christ came declaring that man's relation to sin should be uncompromising4 ,he used vigorous language in regard to sin4 ,he said1 ,woe unto the world because of offenses6 for it must needs be that offenses come2 but woe to that man by whom the offense cometh6 ,wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee1 cut them off and cast them from thee3 it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed1 rather than having two hands or feet to be cast into everlasting fire 7,matthew #ah3g1h74 ,but ,jesus in thus advocating heroic treatment for sin was but doing what eminent surgeons are advising every day in regard to certain dangerous bodily diseases4 ,jesus also laid ,his finger on the source of sin when ,he declared1 ,for out of the heart proceed evil thoughts1 murders1 adulteries1 fornications1 thefts1 false witness1 blasphemies3 these are the things which defile a man 7,matthew #ae3ai74 ,a man must think evil before he does evil1 and hence the emphasis which ,jesus placed upon keeping the heart clean4 ,the ,right ,relation of ,man to ,salvation4--,man feels his inclination to do evil and1 seeing also the degradation wrought by it1 desires to be saved from it4 ,the cry has gone up from many hearts to be free not only from the power of sin but from the desire to commit sin4 ,no man can save himself4 ,he may succeed in a certain outward reformation and correctness of habit and speech1 but he cannot control the thoughts and inclinations of his own heart4 ,the special mission of ,jesus ,christ was to place man in the right relation of salvation from his sins and to show ,himself the ,saviour of ,man4 ,it was declared of ,him before ,his birth1 ,he shall save ,his people from their sins 7,matthew #a3ba74 ,he said at the last supper1 ,this is ,my blood of the ,new ,testament which is shed for many for the remission of sins 7,matthew #bf3bh74 ,he had power to forgive sins 7,mark #b3aj74 ,he said not1 ,i show you the way1 but ,i am the way1 the truth and the life 7,john #ad3f74 ,there is here a mighty spiritual power which can save man from sin and can keep him from the desire to sin4 ,it is only as man enters into personal relations with ,jesus ,christ1 repenting of his sin and having faith in ,him1 that the burden of sin is lifted from his heart 7,matthew #f3cc2 #aa3bh1cj74 ,the ,right ,relation of ,man to ,death and the ,future ,life4--,the facts of death and of what comes after cannot be set aside2 they must be faced4 ,all forms of religion and systems of philosophy have striven to sustain and comfort men at their trying hour of need4 ,the trouble has been1 however1 to find any certain ground of the hope of a future life upon which to rest4 ,no man has been able to do more than present a good argument1 in regard to the hereafter1 which might or might not be true4 ,but when ,jesus ,christ came ,he was able to speak with authority and power4 ,he plainly1 in ,his description of the last judgment scene 7,matthew #be3ca-df71 showed the relation of man's faith and actions in this world to his state in the world to come4 ,he declared that a man need have no fear of death or the hereafter who trusted in ,him4 ,i am the resurrection1 and the life3 he that believeth in ,me1 though he were dead yet shall he live3 and whosoever liveth and believeth in ,me shall never die 7,john #aa3be1bf74 ,in ,my ,father's house are many mansions1 if it were not so ,i would have told you4 ,i go to prepare a place for you 7,john #ad3b74 ,in a supreme trust in ,jesus ,christ all dread of death and the hereafter may be taken away and man may enter into a right relation to immortality in this life4 ,,forms ,,of ,,christ',s ,,teaching ,he used many forms in placing the truth before men4 ,he paid great regard to the timeliness and the manner of presenting what ,he had to teach4 ,upon many occasions the multitudes were so captivated by ,his words and works that they followed ,him out into desert places4 ,direct ,discourse4--,the ,sermon on the ,mount is a good example of this teaching4 ,here ,he taught plainly1 7#a7 ,the nature and constitution of the ,kingdom 7,matthew #e3a-af72 in itself 7blessedness1 vs4 #a-ab7 and in its relation to the world 7vs4 #ac-af74 7#b7 ,the law of the kingdom 7,matthew #e3ag-g3ab72 general principles 7vs4 #ag-bj71 the moral law plain in regard to ,his own mission4 ,he declared ,himself to be the ,son of ,god and claimed equality with the ,father 7,john #e3ah-bc74 ,he said1 ,i and ,my ,father are one 7,john #aj3cj74 ,he affirmed ,his preexistence and that ,he had glory with the ,father before the world was 7,john #ag3e7 and whoever had seen ,him had seen the ,father 7,john #ad3i74 ,at ,his trial1 in answer to the question of the ,high ,priest1 ,he declared that ,he was the ,christ1 the ,son of ,god 7,matthew #bf3fc-ff74 ,after ,his resurrection ,he told ,his disciples1 in sending them forth to their mission1 that all power was given ,him in heaven and in earth 7,matthew #bh3ah-bj74 ,parables 7,mark #d3b2 ,matthew #ac3c74--;,christ spoke in parables to convey and send home to the hearts of ,his hearers the truth1 just as ,nathan employed the parable of the lamb in the case of ,david to make him acknowledge his sin4 ,they were adapted to the capacities of ,his hearers4 ,each parable had some great central truth4 ,the parables have been classified as3 #a4 ,the ,theoretic1 which teach general truths concerning the kingdom of ,god1 such as1 ,the ,sower 7,matthew #ac3c-bc71 ,the ,treasure and ,the ,pearl 7,matthew #ac3dd1de74 #b4 ,grace1 setting forth the divine goodness and grace as the source of salvation and law of ,christian life1 such as1 ,the ,lost ,coin1 ,the ,lost ,sheep and ,the ,lost ,boy 7,luke #ae74 #c4 ,the ,prophetic or ,judgment parables1 which proclaim the righteousness of ,god as the supreme ruler1 rewarding men according to their works1 such as1 ,the ,wicked ,husbandmen 7,matthew #ba3cc-da71 and ,the ,ten ,virgins 7,matthew #be3a-ac74 ,miracles 7,john #c3b2 #b3bc2 #f3b2 ,mark #a3cb-cd74--;,christ appealed to ,his works as an evidence of ,his divine mission 7,john #aj3ch74 ,miracles are possible1 probable and credible1 when we believe there is a personal ,god1 who is the ,supreme ,ruler of the universe and that ,he cares for man4 ,the thirty-six miracles of which an account is given in the four gospels have been divided into three classes2 their teaching is important3 #a4 ,the ,nature miracles show the divinity of ,christ4 ,the feeding of the five thousand men 7,matthew #ad3ae-ba7 reveals ,his creative power1 and the stilling of the storm on the ,lake of ,galilee 7,matthew #h3bc-bg7 ,his divine command over ,nature and its forces4 #b4 ,the ,healing miracles reveal not only ,his divinity but ,his humanity and compassion4 ,they set forth the one being who loves the human race with ,his whole heart4 ,this class of miracles shows the mission of ,jesus to be the extinction of sin and disease1 and the redemption of man1 body and soul4 #c4 ,the ,moral miracles are the life of ,christ and its effect upon the world4 ,example of ,living and ,dying1 the teaching of which is elaborated in the ,acts and ,epistles 7,acts #a3h2 #b3ca-da2 #ac3bc-db2 ,philippians #b3e-aa2 ,colossians #a3ac-bj74 ,,how ,,christ ,,taught ,with ,authority quality of the religion of any soul or race2 and in accordance with the view that is held of ,god1 ,his nature1 ,his character and ,his relation to other beings1 the spirit and the substance of theology will be determined4 ,when one man says1 ,i believe in ,god he may have in mind an entirely different conception of ,god from another man who uses the same expression4 ,there is a ,christian idea of ,god and there are many non-,christian ideas about ,god2 it is the latter which keep men from heartily engaging in the service of the ,lord ,jesus ,christ4 ,wrong ,conceptions of ,god4--,some of these are3 #a4 ,that ,he is a blind fate or unknowable force4 ,personality is denied1 and it is asserted that this great force neither sees1 cares nor even knows what men do or do not do4 #b4 ,even if this great force be personal1 and knows what is going on amongst men1 ,he is perfectly indifferent to right or wrong actions4 #c4 ,god knows and sees all that is going on1 but ,he has wound up this universe like a great clock4 ,to help or succour any man in his distress would disarrange the whole system4 ,natural law must have its course2 it is useless to pray4 #d4 ,god is revengeful or weak2 in the first place men seek to keep out of ,his way1 in the second they do not care4 ,when men adopt these wrong ideas of ,god and cherish them they are fashioned after them in life and character4 ,here are the stumbling-blocks which need to be removed before men1 who think this way1 can be brought into sympathy with the ,church of ,christ4 ,man can never come into personal loving relations with a ,universal ,substance or ,force1 no matter how mighty it is4 ,right ,conceptions of ,god are necessary for the true worship of the ,almighty1 for the exercise of proper conduct to our fellow men and for the upbuilding of our own spiritual life4 ,never was there a time when the great fundamental positions of the ,bible1 in regard to ,god1 needed to be more plainly stated than to-day4 ,when men stand firmly upon these positions a whole host of perplexities and anxieties will take their departure4 ,the ,christian ,conception of ,god has been thus expressed1 ,god is the ,personal ,spirit1 perfectly good1 who in holy love1 creates1 sustains and orders all4 ,the essential matters covered in this statement are3 #a4 ,the nature of ,god4 ,he is the ,personal ,spirit 7,exodus #c3ad2 ,john #d3bd7 who can enter into personal relations with man1 and who hears and answers prayer4 #b4 ,the character of ,god4 ,he is perfectly good1 pure and holy 7,psalm #be3h2 ,nahum #a3g2 ,romans #b3d74 ,man may have perfect confidence1 however matters may seem to him to go wrong with his imperfect vision of the world and the happenings in it1 that there is a good ,god who governs all in the interest of righteousness 7,matthew #ac3bd-cj1cf-dc74 #c4 ,the relation of ,god to all other existences4 ,he creates1 sustains and orders all 7,genesis #a3a2 ,psalm #ai74 #d4 ,the motive of ,god in ,his relation to all other existence2 it is holy love 7#a ,john #d3h74 ,supreme power1 personality1 intelligence and perfect goodness are then the great revealed truths which the ,bible presents to us as the proper conceptions which we should have of ,god4 ,but if it is desired to know what ,god is like we look at once to ,jesus ,christ4 ,he is supreme intelligence4 ,he has power over nature and men and ,he uses all with the motive and purpose of a holy love4 ,we know that ,he controlled nature1 when on earth1 and not nature ,him4 ,he taught the great love of ,god for man4 ,he made it plain that men were not in a relation as atoms of matter in a whirlpool of action1 but as sons to a loving father4 ,,god ,,is ,,supreme ,god's ,attitude to the ,universe4--,the ,scriptures are consistent in the statement1 many times made1 that ,god is the source of all things4 ,he brings all things into being and sustains all by the word of ,his power4 ,his is a work of perpetual administration4 ,but ,god is not wholly occupied in conducting the affairs of the universe1 neither does it exhaust ,his possibilities 7,psalm #h3a2 #adh3ac74 ,he is greater than the universe4 ,god1 says ,dr4 ,clarke1 in his ,outline of ,christian ,theology1 is like the spirit of a man in his body1 which is greater than his body1 able to direct his body1 and capable of activities that far transcend the physical realm4 ,god is a free spirit1 personal1 self-directing1 unexhausted by ,his present activities4 ,this statement affirms both the immanence and the transcendence of ,god4 ,by the immanence of ,god is meant that ,he is everywhere and always present in the universe1 nowhere absent from it1 never separated from its life4 ,by ,his transcendence is meant--not as is sometimes represented--that ,he is outside and views the universe from beyond and above1 but that ,he is not shut up in it or limited by it1 not required in ,his totality to maintain and order it4 ,by both together is meant that ,he is a free spirit inhabiting the universe1 but surpassing it1 immanent as always in the universe1 and transcendent1 as always independent of its limitations and able to act upon it4 ,god's ,attitude to ,man4--,god has not only placed man at the head of the animal world1 but has endowed him with qualities which make him its lord and master4 ,god is more than the ,creator of man4 ,he is his ,father1 ,saviour and ,friend4 ,god comes to man in the attitude1 of ,the ,supreme ,spiritual ,being1 approaching a spiritual being who is of priceless value4 ,jesus ,christ makes this truth very plain4 ,he everywhere teaches the great worth of the life of a man and that ,god is seeking to come directly into touch with this life which is so precious in ,his sight 7,john #c3af2 ,matthew #aj3cj1ca74 ,this life is not the physical but the spiritual which is the real life of a man4 ,not what one has1 but what one is1 gives the true measure of a man4 ,he said1 ,for what shall it profit a man1 if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul8 ,or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul8 7,mark #h3cf1cg74 ,is not the life more than meat and the body than raiment8 7,matthew #f3be74 ,in harmony with this view of the worth of life1 ,professor ,stevens in ,the ,theology of the ,new ,testament1 says1 ,jesus taught that the most humble and insignificant person1 on whom men set no value1 is precious in the sight of ,god4 ,these little ones1 be they children or humble believers1 are not the despised 7,matthew #ah3aj74 ,the least important person who goes astray from goodness excites the pity and solicitude of ,god1 and ,he seeks him and brings him back as the shepherd1 leaving his ninety-nine sheep1 goes into the mountains in eager search after the one that has wandered away 7,luke #ae3ad74 ,the hope of everlasting life is bound up with the recognition by man of the priceless value of the spiritual life and of the necessity of his coming into harmony 7in thought1 will and action7 with ,god's plans for him 7,john #ag3c2 ,luke #ab3af-ba2 ,john #a3d2 #c3ae1cd-cf2 #f3ce1dg2 #ad3f74 ,,god ,,is ,,the ,,personal ,,spirit ,god is ,spirit1 these words of ,christ1 uttered to the ,samaritan woman 7,john #d3bd71 have reference to the nature of ,god and show us how we are to think of ,him4 ,he is not limited to a particular place of worship1 but is to be worshipped in spirit and in truth 7,john #d3bc74 ,when we speak of a spirit we mean a being who has intelligence and will2 one who thinks1 feels and wills4 ,god the great intelligence and will can enter into communication with man who1 while he has a body1 has also a spirit possessing intelligence and a will4 ,we need not define the difference between ,god and matter1 if only we give full weight to this vital and practical difference1 that ,he is one who thinks and feels and wills4 ,the composition of spirit we may never understand1 but this is the action of spirit and this is intelligible4 ,god is everywhere represented in the ,scriptures as exercising intelligence and will 7,genesis #a3a1b2 #f3c2 ,job #bf3g-ad2 #ch3a-da2 ,psalm #b2 #ai2 #gb2 ,isaiah #fa3a2 ,mark #aj3bg2 #ab3bg2 ,john #c3cd2 ,acts #c3bf74 ,god is ,personal4--,personality has two characteristics2 self-consciousness and self-direction4 ,when it is said that ,god is personal1 the meaning is that ,he knows ,himself as ,god and directs ,his own actions4 ,in the ,bible ,he is represented as saying ,i 7,exodus #bj3b2 #c3ad7 and as directing all things4 ,personality does not limit ,god4 ,he is the one perfect personality4 ,personality in man exists only in a more or less imperfect degree4 ,personality is understood here not as bodily1 but as belonging to the spirit4 ,,god ,,is ,,good ,the ,character of ,god is a subject of great importance to man4 ,god is the ,supreme ,personal ,spirit1 yet to know only this is to leave out a very vital part in our estimation or knowledge of ,god4 ,we desire to know and feel that ,god is not only the greatest1 but the best being in the universe4 ,hence ,god is shown to us in the ,bible to be inwardly perfect and outwardly consistent with this perfection4 ,the ,old ,testament shows a struggle between ,god and man2 ,god seeking to bring man to the thinking of right thoughts and doing of right actions and man resisting ,him4 ,the history of ,israel is a story of a nation whom ,god would make a righteous people2 all the laws given to it1 civil1 sanitary and ceremonial1 were with the end in view to make it a holy nation2 all its prophets and teachers proclaim the righteous and just character of ,god 7,exodus #ai3f2 ,leviticus #aa3de2 #ai3b2 #bj3g1 #h2 ,numbers #ae3dj2 ,deuteronomy #ad3b1ba2 ,joshua #bd3ai2 ,psalm #bb3c2 #ii3c2 #aaa3i2 ,isaiah #f3c2 #eg3ae74 ,in ,jesus ,christ and ,his life upon earth we see the goodness of ,god in its largeness4 ,in ,his gospel holiness is the ideal1 the substance of ,christian character and the end in view in ,christian experience4 ,he says1 in the ,sermon on the ,mount1 ,be ye therefore perfect1 even as your ,father which is in heaven is perfect 7,matthew #e3dh74 ,in ,christ we have the one perfect ideal of moral excellence4 ,in ,him we can see what goodness in ,god means 7,john #ad3i74 ,the standard for the conduct of man is that of ,god's goodness1 righteousness and truth2 this is not a double one--the ,old and the ,new ,testament--but a single one and applicable to all men of all races and climes4 ,if sin exists holiness in ,god must absolutely and forever oppose it4 ,from the holiness in ,god's character we can understand ,his righteousness and justice4 ,the man who does evil sets his will against ,god's will and against the principle upon which ,he conducts the universe4 ,such a man has placed himself where he must either turn back and forsake his sin or take the inevitable consequences of resisting the purpose which ,god is fulfilling4 ,god's love for man is bound up with ,his goodness4 ,god1 foreseeing the fearful consequences of man's sinning1 seeks in every way to warn and turn him back from the evil way4 ,he knows the great worth of the soul and desires to save it to everlasting joy 7,john #c3ag2 ,luke #i3ef2 ,john #ad3a-c74 ,,god',s ,,manifestation ,the ,manifestation of ,god in ,jesus ,christ4--,paul says1 when the fullness of time was come1 ,god sent forth ,his ,son 7,galatians #d3d72 ,that at the name of ,jesus every knee should bow1 of things in heaven1 and things in earth1 and things under the earth2 and that every tongue should confess that ,jesus ,christ is ,lord to the glory of ,god the ,father 7,philippians #b3aj1aa74 ,this personal manifestation of ,god in ,christ is in perfect harmony with the nature and character of ,god as we know ,him through the ,scriptures4 ,this manifestation of ,god is not only subject to a historical test1 but may also be made the subject of a personal experience test1 ,if any man will do ,his will he shall know of the doctrine 7,john #g3ag74 ,soon after the resurrection and ascension of ,jesus the disciples1 who had been with ,jesus when ,he was upon earth1 began to urge others to make a test of personal experience in regard to the manifestation of ,god in ,christ 7,acts #b3ad1ca-dg2 #c3ai-ba2 #g3ef74 ,paul1 who had a special experience 7,acts #i3a-h71 preached this test of personal experience throughout the ,roman ,empire4 ,ever since those early times there has been the same urgent appeal for men to come to a knowledge of ,god through ,jesus ,christ and to make the test not only historical1 but one of personal experience4 ,the ,threefold ,self-manifestation of ,god4--,christ in instructing ,his disciples after ,his resurrection1 said1 ,go ye therefore and teach all nations1 baptizing them in the name of the ,father and of the ,son and of the ,holy ,ghost 7,matthew #bh3ai74 ,in the ,old ,testament we have the manifestation of ,god as the one living ,god of all4 ,he was specially known as the ,god of ,israel in preparing that nation for the great part it had in the divine economy4 ,in the ,new ,testament ,christ is recognized by ,his followers--and so taught ,himself--as the personal manifestation of ,god1 to whom divine honour was and is to be given4 ,christ told ,his followers that ,he would pray the ,father and ,he shall give you another ,comforter1 that ,he may abide with you forever 7,john #ad3af74 ,this ,comforter 7#af3g-ae71 the ,holy ,spirit1 would guide them into all truth4 ,the ,holy ,spirit1 upon whom they were to wait for ,his necessity an object of thought4 ,he is the subject of natural laws1 instincts and passions4 ,how far is he free2 how far bound8 ,how is he linked with the physical and the spiritual worlds8 ,these and a host of other questions press upon us for answers1 when we begin to think about man and his destiny4 ,taken in detail the inquiries lead investigators in many different directions and result in many contradictory systems of thought4 ,taken1 however1 in a general practical way all questions about man may be considered from two standpoints2 the physical and the spiritual4 ,the danger is in making the physical alone interpret the spiritual and in declaring that man is simply a ripple on the sea of human events and human life1 merely on episode marking a particular stage in the cooling of a nebula4 ,this method of interpretation leads to the ruling out of any personal responsibility on the part of man for his thoughts or actions1 the obliteration of the distinction between right and wrong and the denial of a personal ,god and personal immortality4 ,the right standpoint from which to consider the many questions about man1 as he appears upon this earth1 is that of a personal spiritual being with a physical body4 ,there is here no denial of the physical part of man1 but it is made subordinate to the spiritual4 ,man is personal and responsible for his thoughts and conduct2 upon this conception of man is founded human society and the state4 ,man is spiritual1 knowing the distinction between right and wrong1 capable of knowing ,god who is ,the ,personal ,spirit and looking forward to a personal immortality4 ,the ,christian ,thought of ,man recognizes him as a personal spiritual being with a physical body2 he has large responsibilities1 and a great destiny to attain--if he so wills4 ,there are six heads under which the ,christian conception of man may be considered3 #a4 ,man is mortal 7,psalm #ij3e1aj2 ,ecclesiastes #ab3e74 ,the physical part of man is quite definitely limited in years4 ,his body is formed of the same elements as that of any other animal and is subject to the law of decay and death4 ,this linking of man with1 what we call1 the material universe is asserted at the very opening of the ,bible 7,genesis #b3g74 ,man is a member of a race of men with all that this membership implies 7,acts #ag3bf74 #b4 ,man is immortal 7#a ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul 7see ,psalm #h3d-h74 ,these passages have a great representative character and the truth expressed in them has lived and will live under all theories of the appearance of man upon this earth4 ,in the ,bible man is shown as the latest and highest creation of ,god1 the last and best of ,his work in the animal world1 but with a difference that is world-wide between him and the brute creation4 ,here is an animal1 coming up out of the dust1 endowed with spiritual qualities which place him not only at the head of the animal kingdom1 but dominating it4 ,the most radical evolutionist must admit that man is the last in the list of uplifts in the animal world1 that he has qualities which elevate him far above it and by which he dominates it4 ,somewhere back there1 again1 he must admit that there came a change and the dust-born animal was changed into a ,god-born soul4 ,the great truth then remains1 man is an animal but endowed with a growing marvellous self-conscious1 self-determining personality4 ,as the ,bible is a progressive revelation1 showing us more and more the greatness of spiritual truths1 it represents man as starting from no high plane of civilization and as a learner through the ages4 ,man is even now in the process of making2 he has not yet come to his best estate4 ,the ,image of ,god4--,what is the likeness of ,god8 ,god is ,spirit 7,john #d3bd7 and that part of man which counts is his spiritual kinship to ,god4 ,man's intelligence1 moral nature and will constitute the image of ,god in him and make it possible for him to come into communication with ,god and to occupy his unique place in the universe4 ,only a person can understand a person4 ,man is dear to ,god because he is like ,him4 ,vast and glorious as it is1 the sun cannot think ,god's thoughts2 can fulfill but cannot intelligently sympathize with ,god's purposes4 ,man1 alone among ,god's works1 can enter into and approve of ,god's purpose in the world and can intelligently fulfill it4 ,without man the whole material universe would have been dark and unintelligible1 mechanical and apparently without any sufficient purpose4 ,matter1 however fearfully and wonderfully wrought1 is but the platform and material in which spirit1 intelligence and will1 may fulfill themselves and find development4 ,the ,bible seeks to show men in how many ways they resemble ,god and to urge them to be worthy of their likeness to ,god4 ,there is a certain philosophy on the other hand1 sometimes called the dirt philosophy1 which seeks to show men in how many ways they resemble the brute and to urge them to live the life of the brute4 ,but a great practical question which demands an answer of us--as we look out upon the world of men taking them as they are--is1 ,did ,god make the evil man in ,his likeness as well as the good man8 ,the ,good ,man4--,the best things bear the stamp of their maker4 ,if a good judge of pictures is taken into some famous art gallery it is not necessary to point out to him the excellencies of the paintings1 they tell their own story4 ,there are men in the ,bible who manifestly bear the image of ,god2 ,abraham1 ,isaac1 ,enoch1 ,moses1 ,david1 ,john1 ,paul and others4 ,there have been many men in ancient and modern times who1 when some great crisis has come in the state or church1 have conducted themselves as men born in the image of ,god2 men who have sacrificed their own interests to be loyal to the truth4 ,we all recognize such men as ,god-born4 ,the ,evil ,man4--,the difficulty is however to recognize any image of ,god in a certain class of evil men who have low instincts and desires2 men who lie1 cheat1 steal and break every commandment of ,god and man4 ,did ,god make the worst and the lowest of men8 ,if we are to consider fairly the question of the making of man in the image of ,god we must not shun this problem1 which the vilest of men and the most degraded savage presents4 ,what can be seen in these men that reminds us of the likeness of ,god8 ,we are to judge men1 however1 by what they are capable of and are1 at their best1 rather than at their worst4 ,the art world regards ,michael ,angelo's statue of ,moses as one of the greatest creations of the sculptor's genius4 ,suppose1 however1 some one should maliciously deluge this masterpiece with ink1 smash it into fragments with a huge hammer1 and then ask as he looked upon the marred and blackened bits of marble1 ,is that a masterpiece of ,michael ,angelo's genius8 ,so we look upon a man who has been marred and broken by sin and ask the question1 ,was that man created in the image of ,god8 ,lo1 this only have ,i found1 that ,god hath made man upright2 but they have sought out many inventions4 ,trace back the cause of the degradation of the individual or society or state and we always find the root to be in some transgression of a righteous law of ,god4 ,the ,bible uniformly asserts that ,god is not the author of sin or man's fall into evil ways1 but that he has sufficient light to follow right ways1 if he will4 ,but that an evil man has this marvelous heritage of being ,god-born is shown by the fact that even when he has marred the likeness of ,god in him1 by sin1 beyond human recognition there is still a possibility of its being restored4 ,jesus ,christ said1 ,for the ,son of man is come to seek and save that which was lost 7,luke #ai3aj2 ,matthew #ae3bd2 ,luke #ae3d72 the most evil men came to ,him and1 confessing their sins1 were brought back into sonship with ,god4 ,the incentive to ,christian work1 in the slums of the cities1 amongst the most degraded savages and everywhere1 is the finding of men broken and marred by sin and the possibility of bringing them back to ,god4 ,god disapproves the sin but loves the sinner4 ,god commended ,his love towards us in that while we were yet sinners ,christ died for us 7,romans #e3h-aa74 his will to do ,god's will and makes ,god's plan his plan of life that he comes to his best and highest estate4 ,the world is full of sin and misery1 and there are many burdens heavy to be borne1 because man insists upon having his way instead of seeking ,god's way4 ,many great civilizations have gone down and many forms of society have been disrupted because1 in them1 man strove to set up his glory1 rather than ,god's glory1 as the standard to be striven for4 ,man has repeatedly attempted to attain to the dominion promised him only to fail because he has desired such dominion to spend it upon himself4 ,god desires to crown man with glory and honour and to do exceedingly large things for him1 the ,scriptures are filled with great promises1 but man only grasps at the shadow of power1 when he might have the substance4 ,all great inventions and discoveries but point to still greater ones1 when man shall be fitted by spiritual grace and goodness to be intrusted with them4 ,the kingdom of heaven must come in man's heart before any great material or spiritual advancement can come in the world4 ,education1 commerce1 art1 science1 in all their majesty of strength1 can never do what the ,christian religion can do for men when it shall succeed in getting them to seek to be conformed to the divine likeness3 this is a truth too little emphasized1 but it is fundamental and necessary to any real progress in the world4 ,there is a higher law for life than self-will and unregulated impulse2 the real world goes deeper than things of sense2 this temporal life is related to eternity2 and ,god is the central verity of all4 ,,the ,,perfect ,,example ,god's ,measure of a ,man4--,what is the standard by which man is to compare himself8 ,great things are expected of a man but how is he to work them out8 ,these are fair questions4 ,jesus ,christ has two titles in the ,new ,testament1 ,the ,son of ,god and ,the ,son of ,man4 ,if we want to know what ,god is like we look into the face of ,jesus ,christ4 ,if we want to know what man ought to be we look into the face of ,jesus ,christ 7,john #ad3e-i2 ,matthew #e3dh74 ,jesus ,christ is the ,perfect ,example4 ,he is the food 7,matthew #d3b72 this is not a weakling's task4 ,a man must have a strong body to endure through such a starvation period4 ,for a man to be crucified upon a cross1 after being scourged1 was to undergo the most terrible agony2 yet ,christ so had ,his body under control upon ,his cross that ,he could speak forgiveness for ,his enemies and commend ,his mother to the care of a disciple4 ,how can ,i start a religion8 said one great ,frenchman to another4 ,go and be crucified1 was the reply4 ,if we want to behold the perfect physical man1 who had ,his body in complete control and made it do in the power of ,his intellect8 ,he stands ready before all to state and defend ,his precepts and principles4 ,he so spoke to the people that they listened with growing conviction4 ,never man spake like this man4 ,difficult questions were brought to ,him1 questions which would make the wisest judges hesitate in their answers1 and at once ,he gave ,his replies which stand unimpeached to-day for marvellous wisdom and power4 ,living in an age long before modern science had its birth1 ,he handles ,nature as her ,master and makes no mistake4 ,his words to-day are a power in the court1 in the senate and the marts of the world1 as well as in the pulpit4 ,he is the perfect intellectual man for our example4 ,he is the ,perfect ,example of a ,moral ,man4--,many intellectual and physical giants fail upon the moral test2 but in ,christ we find no moral flaw4 ,he is the standard of moral perfection4 ,he is the perfect moral example for all men4 ,here is the foundation for physical and the relation which a man shall hold to other men4 #a4 ,it is fundamental in every system of philosophy and religion4 ,the answers1 which are given1 show their widespread practical bearing in the social1 industrial and political spheres1 as well as in the religious4 #b4 ,it is imperative from the fact it demands a reply which becomes at once the basis of action4 ,a man1 amongst men1 is under the necessity of deciding how he will conduct himself towards his fellow men4 ,there are many divergent opinions1 in regard to the relation which a man should sustain to his fellow man1 which lead to widely divergent courses of action and largely affect the world for good or ill4 ,jesus ,christ was outspoken on this matter4 ,his words 7,luke #aj3bi-cg2 ,matthew #bb3cf-dj7 go at once to the heart of the question and give its only possible solution4 ,,the ,,differences ,,between ,,men ,the ,inequalities in the ,lives of ,men are many and far reaching4 ,they divide men from each other and tend1 if brooded over1 to make them live lives apart1 with a lessening sympathy and a growing hostility4 ,they pertain to race1 education1 business and society4 ,they may be natural1 or artificially induced4 ,the great inequality to-day1 however1 upon which men place an acute emphasis is that of wealth or the lack of it4 ,a man once came to ,jesus and said1 ,master1 speak to my brother1 that he divide the inheritance with me 7,luke #ab3ac72 there is the same demand to-day4 ,men are not seeking to share the responsibility of a self-denying service to their fellow-men1 such as ,jesus gave2 neither are they greatly desirous of advancing the cause of righteousness in the world1 but they are too largely looking to the betterment of their material condition4 ,it is this state of affairs which often spurs men on to accumulate wealth by the oppression of their fellow men4 ,many men work and plan for certain great results in financial matters 7as though these were the supreme things71 only to be disappointed and in consequence lose their interest in life4 ,it is the making of the struggle for material betterment the chief thing in life which causes strikes1 lockouts and most of our modern industrial troubles4 ,here we find also the cause of heart-burnings and jealousies and deep-seated hatreds4 ,it is said that out of these struggles between competitors1 and employer and employee1 there is coming a better understanding between the contending parties and also new adjustments which will do away with these destructive strifes4 ,this may all be true1 but so long as men seek simply and only for material betterment1 ignoring the spiritual and moral in their lives1 any readjustment of hours of labour or scale of wages or agreements will only be of a temporary character1 for the real cause of the whole trouble is left untouched4 ,one of the ablest writers upon ,the ,social ,unrest says1 ,at the heart of the larger labour movement is the race longing for a society in which at least the spirit of equality shall be realized4 ,most radical remedies are only means to this end4 ,beyond1 and deeper than all the machinery of social reconstruction1 is this master passion of democracy4 ,but this same writer also1 after a survey of the whole question1 declares that before this equality can be realized there must come a character founded on love4 ,cause and ,remedy4--,selfishness is often the real cause of the sting of inequality and of the keeping of men apart2 until this is eradicated and replaced by the master passion of love--employer for employee and employee for employer--no agreements and no legislation1 between the contending forces will serve the purpose4 ,it was the master passion of a supreme love which produced the first social equality society 7,acts #d3cb-cg72 it was selfishness which broke it up 7,acts #e3a-ac74 ,this selfishness is also at the root of the arrogance which causes men to despise men of an inferior race1 culture or social position and seeks to use them for purposes of gain4 ,perfect equality amongst men1 however1 outside of equality before the law and ,god1 hardly seems a realizable thing2 certainly all men cannot be of the same age and of the same stature at the same time2 there are gifts of talent2 there are different races1 but where supreme love is it takes out the sting of a sense of an inferiority and the jealousy and hatred of superior gifts2 under its benign influence the rich and the poor1 the talented and the untalented1 work together as brethren4 ,the brotherhood of love is the only true brotherhood and the only solution of this vexed question4 ,,the ,,true ,,relation ,,of ,,man ,,to ,,man ,who is ,my ,neighbour8--,the answer which ,jesus gave to this question 7,luke #aj3bi71 which a certain lawyer asked of ,him in order to justify himself1 shows the true relation of man to man4 ,the lawyer doubtless supposed when he put this question to ,jesus that he would silence ,him4 ,the ,jews in their proud isolation considered themselves the chosen people of ,god and despised other races1 even looking with a certain contempt upon their ,roman conquerors4 ,how would the ,jewish ,messiah1 if not put to silence1 answer a question like this8 ,doubtless the reply would be that only a ,jew could be neighbour to a ,jew4 ,the race spirit is a strong one and men born to a certain nationality have many stout binding ties of speech and customs1 which are not easily broken4 ,mark1 however1 the large mindedness of ,jesus4 ,he breaks at once through race ties and without so much as mentioning the ,jew1 he takes the ,samaritan as the example of a good neighbour4 ,now the ,jews and the ,samaritans had no dealings with each other1 their animosity was well known2 at this distance of time we can hardly realize how startling a thing it was to take a ,samaritan as an example of a good neighbour4 ,but it is right here that ,jesus begins to show us the true relation of man to man and that this relation is superior to race1 caste1 language1 social distinctions1 customs and organizations4 ,my neighbour1 then1 is not only the man who lives next door1 or is in the same business1 or belongs to the same church or labour organization1 or political party1 but all men are my neighbours and ,i am to seek to do them good 7,luke #aj3cj-cg74 ,this definition of neighbour does away with all clannishness and exclusiveness1 and man comes face to face with his fellow man as a man4 ,how ,shall ,i ,treat ,my ,neighbour8--,a number of answers may be given3 #a4 ,investigate the claims of my neighbour when ,i see him in a sad condition4 ,the good ,samaritan did this at considerable personal risk1 for he could be by no means sure that the robbers would not return and rob him4 ,too many men1 when they see their neighbours in want1 pass by on the other side1 as the priest and ,levite did4 ,adversity has been described as a deep pit1 into which a man has fallen1 which is surrounded by his near-sighted friends4 #b4 ,sympathize and succour my neighbour in trouble and do what is needed to help him get upon his feet4 #c4 ,interest myself in the well being of my neighbour after the immediate and acute necessity for aid is past4 ,there are many who are willing to aid when a pressing call comes1 but who are unwilling to keep up that aid through the convalescing stage2 here is where the summons comes to be not weary in well doing to one's neighbour4 ,outside of money help and aid in times of disaster and sickness there are many who are lonesome for words of cheer and acts of kindness on the part of those with whom they daily come in contact4 ,there is a deeper meaning in the parable than that which relates to physical pain4 ,there is a suffering of the soul and a mental trouble which beseech the kindness of the ,christlike neighbourly touch4 #d4 ,there is also the larger work1 which is fundamental1 of bringing one's fellow man into the fellowship and communion of ,jesus ,christ2 this is the greatest benefit which any ,christian man can confer upon his brother-man 7,john #a3dj-db1de74 ,,christ',s ,,law ,,of ,,love ,statement of the ,law4--,thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself 7,matthew #bb3ci74 ,a certain lawyer asked ,jesus1 ,master1 which is the great commandment of the law8 ,jesus said unto him1 ,thou shalt love the ,lord thy ,god with all thy heart1 and with all thy soul and with all thy mind4 ,this is the first and great commandment4 ,and the second is like unto it4 ,thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself4 ,the kingdom of ,god will come when this commandment is fully obeyed by men4 ,exposition of the ,law4--,it would seem as if a law so plainly stated would need no explanation or exposition4 ,but before men can rightly love each other they must have certain principles and a certain character4 ,it is not desirable that evil men with depraved thoughts and bad lives love us as they love themselves2 for they love that which1 if accepted by men1 would lead to deep corruption of character4 ,jesus ,christ well put it that ,god must first be loved1 with all the heart1 soul and mind1 before a man is ready to love his neighbour as himself4 ,this loving of ,god1 first1 implies an acceptance of the standpoint of ,god in regard to man and the looking upon one's fellow man as ,god looks upon him4 ,this standpoint of ,god is best seen in the words and acts of ,jesus ,christ4 ,a man in order1 then1 to love his fellow man aright must be thoroughly imbued with the principles of the ,master4 ,a man must look upon other men as having souls of eternal value4 ,a man who would do as ,jesus would have him do must first have ,his spirit of self-sacrificing love 7,matthew #bc3h-ab2 ,john #ag3ai2 ,philippians #b3e-g2 ,isaiah #ec3c2 ,john #ac3ab-ae74 ,application of the ,law4--,the beauty of this law of love is that it may be universally applied4 ,there is no condition of man that it cannot meet and satisfy4 ,the crying wrongs of the home1 society1 the industrial world1 the state1 arise out of its neglect and condemnation4 ,men seek to make good their claims for things which they think belong to them1 they fight for them1 gain them or lose them1 fight again or are fought1 and in consequence race hatred1 class and industrial hatred embitter the hearts of men4 ,this law applied to the life of the individual1 sweetens it in its lowest depths and makes the strongest kind of a character4 ,paul is an example of an able yet impetuous man1 who let the gospel of the love of ,christ have its supreme way with him4 ,we find in him no shrinking from difficulties or death itself 7#b ,timothy #d3f-h74 ,in the midst of sore trials he wrote that remarkable classic 7#a ,corinthians #ac7 upon love which has been the help and stay of many a burdened soul4 ,this law applied in society is its only saving power4 ,it is this ,christ love which sends men into the slums of the cities to work for their fellow men4 ,it is this love that is the moving power of the missionary of the cross1 when he goes into the heart of heathendom4 ,it is this love that has brought into the world all the reforms that are worth having and caused it to care for its sick and its poor4 ,it is to be deplored that in some quarters we should hear voices talking about the inability of the ,church to cope with the modern conditions of life and that these voices should be calling for new institutions to take its place4 ,so long as the ,church recognizes its duty to preach and practice the love of ,god to man1 man to ,god1 and man to his fellow man1 no institution can take its place2 for it has in this preaching1 and the application of it1 the supreme remedy for the ills of mankind4 ,where there is no love or regard of man for his ,god or fellow men all agreements and all laws however stoutly made1 with and for contending parties1 have in them a fatal weakness4 ,it is love that sent ,jesus ,christ into the world 7,john #c3af1ag7 and it is its proclamation1 and acceptance as the ruling power of life1 that has caused all the real advancement in civilization since ,his advent4 ,,questions ,what can be thinks evil in his heart and cherishes that evil1 while outwardly his life is moral and upright1 it is only a question of time when the inner badness will break through the thin crust of outer goodness4 ,the real battle of life is in a man's soul and if a man sets himself to win this battle he need have no fear of outward evil circumstances2 he will have to set no guard upon his words or acts for he will speak and act from a pure and upright heart4 ,it is not what he disbelieves1 but what he believes1 his conviction of truth1 that makes him strong4 ,hence the necessity for the vigorous and living faith which ,christ urged upon ,his followers 7,mark #aa3bb-bd2 ,matthew #ag3ai1bj2 ,luke #h3 #bd1be71 a faith that could not be daunted by mountains of difficulty or great storms of afflictions4 ,jesus came into the world with a positive program4 ,he had a constructive gospel to preach to men4 ,his disciples after ,his death followed in the footsteps of their ,master and carried out ,his commands4 ,the result was that faith was translated into action2 the old world was changed and myriads of men gave in their allegiance to the ,christ4 ,the positive setting forth of the ,christian faith always brings definite results4 ,,basis ,,of ,,christian ,,faith ,the ,christian ,faith is ,founded ,upon the ,fact and ,experience of ,jesus ,christ4--,without ,him there would have been no such faith4 #a4 ,the fact of ,christ4 ,this faith bases itself primarily not upon reason or feeling1 but upon ,jesus ,christ1 a historical person1 and what ,he said and did while upon this earth in bodily form4 ,the early disciples and preachers declared themselves to be witnesses4 ,they were sent forth as witnesses 7,matthew #bh3ah-bj2 ,john #ae3bg2 ,acts #a3h2 #b3 #cb74 ,the speeches of ,peter 7,acts #b3ad-dj2 #c3ab-bf2 #d3h-ab71 ,stephen 7,acts #g3a-ef7 and of ,paul 7,acts #ac3af-da2 #bb3a-ba7 are recitals1 of certain well attested occurrences1 which have for their chief point the setting forth of the fact of ,jesus ,christ1 the ,son of ,god1 as the ,saviour of men and hope of the world 7,acts #b3ch1ci74 #b4 ,the experience of ,christ4 ,by this is meant the experience which men have who receive ,christ as their ,saviour and ,lord4 ,there is a historical ,christ2 and there is a spiritual ,christ who enters into a communion of happiness and joy1 with believers in ,him4 ,jesus ,christ1 when on earth in bodily form1 promised the coming of the ,holy ,spirit who should glorify ,him 7,john #af3ac1ad72 ,he also declared to ,his disciples1 ,lo1 ,i am with you alway1 even unto the end of the world 7,matthew #bh3bj74 ,wherever this gospel of ,jesus ,christ is preached and men under its power truly repent of their sins and accept ,him as their ,saviour1 as in the past so now1 men may enter into personal relations with their risen and glorified ,lord 7,acts #b3dj-db2 ,john #g3ag2 ,acts #h3 #e-g2 ,romans #h3a-aj2 ,colossians #a3bg2 ,acts #bf3ae-ai74 ,essential ,elements4--,in the ,christian faith there are six component elements4 #a4 ,belief in ,god as ,the ,spirit1 infinite1 eternal1 and unchangeable in ,his being1 wisdom and power1 holiness1 justice1 destined to live forever 7,genesis #b3g2 #b ,corinthians #e3a2 ,ecclesiastes #ab3g2 ,matthew #f3be2 #e3bi1cj74 #c4 ,belief in sin which taints and corrupts the heart of man1 making it finally1 if unchecked1 the dwelling place of all evil4 ,the effects of sin are everywhere plainly manifest4 ,men not only sin through ignorance and carelessly but willfully4 ,the worst sins are those which are of the spirit1 anger1 pride1 malice and envy 7,isaiah #ec3f2 #fd3f2 ,romans #c3bc2 #a ,john #a3h2 ,romans #a3ah-c3bc2 #h3g74 #d4 ,belief in ,jesus ,christ1 the ,son of ,god and the ,saviour of men1 who #e3bh1bi2 ,matthew #be3ca-df2 #be3a-ac74 ,the great rainbow of promise that spans the future1 for those who trust in ,christ1 is in the fact that ,he said1 ,i am the resurrection and the life3 he that resurrection body will be spiritual1 immortal1 incorruptible1 and like unto the glorious body of ,jesus ,christ 7,philippians #c3bj1ba2 #a ,corinthians #ae3bj-bc1ce-eg74 ,definiteness4--,there is a marvellous directness and definiteness in the statements of the ,new ,testament writers1 in proclaiming the ,christian faith1 because they believe that they are dealing with the tremendous facts of life and destiny4 ,god has manifested ,himself and spoken in ,jesus ,christ as ,he has never manifested ,himself before4 ,god who at sundry times and in diverse manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets1 hath in these last days spoken unto us by ,his ,son1 whom ,he hath appointed heir of all things 7,hebrews #a3a1b74 ,the eternal things of ,god1 kept secret from the foundation of the world1 are now made known to man2 why should he not1 in spite of any punishment or threatened ignominious death1 proclaim these truths definitely and plainly to his fellow man 7,acts #d3ac-bj78 ,the keynote of all of ,paul's work is sounded in a very definite and direct way in his first ,epistle to the ,corinthians 7#b3b1e7 where he says1 ,for ,i determined not to know anything among you1 save ,jesus ,christ and ,him crucified4444 ,that your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men but in the power of ,god4 ,paul consistently maintains throughout his ,epistles that the sole basis of salvation is the grace of ,god through ,jesus ,christ1 to be appropriated by faith on the part of man4 ,,tests ,,of ,,christian ,,faith ,effects ,upon ,men and ,institutions4--,jesus ,christ was ever urging ,his disciples to test ,his words and principles4 ,he declared the difference between true and false prophets could be known by their fruits4 ,he said1 ,do men gather grapes of thorns or figs of thistles8 ,even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit2 but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit 444 wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them 7,matthew #g3ae-bj74 ,when ,thomas expressed doubt of ,his resurrection1 ,christ gave him ample opportunity to test its reality 7,john #bj3bd-bi74 ,christ's challenge to the world is1 ,try ,me6 ,come and see what ,i can do6 ,what kind of men has the ,christian faith made8 ,what kind of communities has it produced8 ,two pertinent questions are asked in a recent book of sermons1 ,what would be the effect upon this world if everybody was a consistent ,christian8 ,what would be the effect upon this world if everybody was a consistent infidel8 ,the argument is a crushing one1 for of a truth ,christianity can stand such a test with a glory that would astonish even the most ardent enthusiasts4 ,and it is the one test1 let it be admitted with sorrow1 that a reviling world is not willing to have it judged by4 ,a ,saving ,faith which meets men at their extremity of need and gives them a new heart4 ,it is not only a faith that did save men when ,christ walked the earth and healed the sick1 giving sight to the blind and raising the dead1 but it is a faith which saves men now4 ,christ is still performing ,his miracle of cleansing the hearts of men of evil4 ,he is saying1 ,come unto ,me1 and men are coming as of old4 ,the question whether ,he can save now is being put to the test every day and every day it is being answered in the regeneration of men4 ,wherever this gospel is preached amongst the wealthy and learned or the poor and ignorant1 it shows its splendid fruitage as it did of old4 ,,uses ,,of ,,christian ,,faith ,to ,make ,plain the ,great ,cause of ,all as ,father4--,we live in an immense universe1 in the midst of giant forces of which1 after science has made its most searching investigation and said its last word1 we know comparatively little and that little imperfectly4 ,no set of men is more ready to admit this state of affairs than that which has made the closest scrutiny of the phenomena of nature4 ,there is a host of questions to which the most painstaking investigation on the part of the philosophers can afford us no answer4 ,without this ,christian faith which tells us of a revelation from ,god and ,his plan and purpose for man we should be helpless1 ever seeking for light in this universe which we could not find4 ,then again we might believe in a first great cause of all things1 but without a revelation we could not know ,god as the ,creator of all things and as our ,father who cares supremely for us--made known in the manifestation of ,jesus ,christ4 ,by faith in ,christ we are brought into communion with ,god the ,father4 ,to ,show the ,importance and ,value of ,human ,life4--,how could man know that he was more than an atom in a whirlpool of atoms1 his life of sense but a transitory thing1 if it had not been for the ,scriptures which seek to impress upon him the value of his life in the sight of ,god 7,john #c3af1ag2 ,matthew #af3bf78 ,without the pale of the ,christian faith men hold life but cheaply1 they squander it and waste it in sin2 they too often say1 ,let us eat1 drink and be merry for tomorrow we die--forever passing out of existence4 ,the ,christian faith holds human life as a very precious thing1 something to be cherished with infinite and loving care1 for the spirit in man is to live forever4 ,here is a new significance given to life which1 when the individual accepts it1 gives him new and great ideals1 which lift him to a higher level of living4 ,by faith in ,christ we are brought into proper fellowship with our fellow men1 and their lives are made precious in our sight4 ,to ,show the ,way to ,happiness and ,joy ,through ,jesus ,christ4--,if there is one thing more than another which man is seeking it is happiness1 but it is the kind of happiness which frequently destroys the body and soul--still he seeks it4 ,many men seek happiness through relaxation of their moral nature4 ,christ came preaching the happiness of a conqueror1 the victor who sings the song of rejoicing over some victory won2 ,he set forth a joy which celebrated a conquest over evil desires and made a man noble and pure in his thoughts and aspirations4 ,jesus did ,his work for the joy that was set before ,him 7,hebrews #ab3b74 ,the ,christian faith was never intended to make a man gloomy or downcast1 but to put joy in his heart and a song upon his lips4 ,no one has more right to a cheerful countenance than the sincere ,christian1 for he can be sure that he knows the way of happiness here and nothing can come to him hereafter save peace and glory in the redeemed life4 ,,questions ,how does belief control action8 ,what is the basis of ,christian faith8 ,give the six component elements of the ,christian faith4 ,what can be said of the definiteness of the ,christian faith8 ,give some of the tests of ,christian faith4 ,give three uses ,these and many questions like them at once come to the front when we begin to discuss the ,bible as a book4 ,it is only possible in this brief study1 of a great subject1 to indicate the line of some of the answers4 ,it is not ,like ,other ,books4--,although its last paragraph was written and the canon completed many hundreds of years ago1 it is still one of the freshest and newest of books and its moral precepts and admonitions are far in advance of the world's practice4 ,it has an adaptability to all sorts and conditions of men and a flexibility in meeting the most radical changes of thought1 which is possessed by no other volume4 ,it has been attacked and denounced and seemingly demolished only in the end to lead its critics captive and to come forth from the fray stronger than ever4 ,it is a ,god-filled and ,god-inspired book4 ,it is the most lasting in its popularity of all books4 ,it is ,like ,other ,books in that it is cast in the mold of the literature of a certain people4 ,we find here all the forms of literature1 history1 philosophy1 poetry1 letters1 etc4 ,there is much plausibility in the plea for the study of the ,bible as literature for it is the best of its kind4 ,it ,leads the ,world's ,thought of ,righteousness and ,purity of ,life4--,the ,ten ,commandments 7,exodus #bj3a-ag71 ,the ,beatitudes 7,matthew #e3a-ab7 and ,the ,sermon on the ,mount 7,matthew #e3a-g3bi7 set forth the highest ethical standards known to man4 ,it is the ,record of a ,revelation from ,god4 ,the theme is1 the entrance of ,god into the spiritual life of man4 ,this makes it superior to all other books and invests it with a unique character which commands our most earnest attention4 ,god1 who is speaking to men through this book1 says1 ,thou shalt have no other gods before ,me4 ,god is not only the ,god of the ,israelites but of all nations and peoples4 ,the great men1 whose life stories are given in the ,bible1 were ,god called to1 and ,god guided in1 their work of uplifting the world4 ,we have only to look at the record to see how the initiative is declared to have been taken by ,god4 ,here is the roll call1 ,abraham 7,genesis #ab3a-c71 ,moses 7,exodus ,light of the world4 ,no other book or set of books announce the entrance of ,god to the spiritual life of man through ,jesus ,christ 7,john #a3a-ah71 who came speaking of the new spiritual birth of man 7,john #c3a-ba74 ,the only key to the understanding of the ,bible is this plan of ,god to enter into the spiritual life of man4 ,we may easily look in the ,bible for what is not there and read into its pages what is in our own thoughts or read out of them that which we do not wish to see1 but back of all we must acknowledge this peculiar purpose of ,god4 ,back also of all theories of revelation and inspiration--and giving rise to them--stands the great thought of ,god for the spiritual redemption of men4 ,for this end ,he enters into covenant with the ,israelites1 ,he sends them prophets and teachers1 and at last ,he sends ,his ,son4 ,continually ,god is calling to men1 ,be ye holy for ,i am holy4 ,,structure ,in any book1 after the consideration of the theme1 we look for the form and the plan4 ,in order to study a book to the best advantage1 the different parts and their relation to each other and to the whole must be made plain4 ,the ,bible readily lends itself to an investigation of its structure4 ,the ,bible is ,one ,book with one thought running through it1 ,god's purpose to redeem man1 and may be so read and studied4 ,the ,bible is ,composed of ,many ,books written by different authors in different languages1 at different times4 ,some of the books were circulated separately before they were gathered either into the canon of the ,old or ,new ,testaments4 ,the gathering together of the books and the placing them in the order that we have them now was a slow process1 but all in the order and interest of a progressive revelation of ,god and because of a common sympathetic subject4 ,the books take different forms and have different classifications1 such as books of the law1 wisdom1 history1 poetry1 etc4 ,in studying any book it is necessary to attend to its classification2 there has been much misunderstanding of the ,bible books because of the interpretation of a book of poetry as history or the holding the free style of a letter to the hard and fast standards of a carefully worded court document4 ,the standpoint of the author of a book1 and some consideration for the age in which he lives1 must always be taken into consideration2 in this way a book1 which may seem to us now to be behind the age in its thought1 will be seen to be far ahead of the age in which the author lived and making and marking an important epoch in a progressive revelation4 ,each ,bible book has a well considered plan1 a special aim1 a historical setting and a practical value4 ,for instance1 in ,genesis we have a book of beginnings2 a broad explanation of the origin of the world1 man1 sin1 salvation2 and the revelation of ,god as ,creator1 ,preserver1 ,lawgiver1 ,judge and ,merciful ,father4 ,after the introduction the book1 if we look into the book itself1 is divided into ten parts with the recurring formula1 ,these are the generations of4 ,this book cannot be overestimated from a religious standpoint4 ,the fact of a ,creator is the fundamental teaching of its cosmogony4 ,god1 one ,god1 is here clearly distinguished from a host of heathen gods4 ,he is over and above matter1 everything in the universe is subject to ,him4 ,again in this book we have the early history of the human race shown in large outline and also the story of the fathers of the ,jewish race from the calling of ,abraham to the death of ,jacob4 ,behind any theory of the construction of ,genesis the great representative truths stand firm4 ,every ,bible book can be considered and its plan and purpose shown in this way4 ,even a small book like ,ruth1 which seems to be only a little pleasant story1 has an important part to perform4 ,without it the times of the judges would present only a very somber picture1 but with it we can see that in those dark and troublous times there were noble1 ,god fearing men like ,boaz and true women like ,ruth4 ,we could not spare a single book of the ,new ,testament1 for with one lacking something would be wanting in the picture of early ,christianity4 ,the ,bible is ,composed of ,groups of ,books ,which ,relate to ,special ,eras4--,they show ,god revealing ,himself and also dealing with the chosen nation1 under different forms of administration2 they indicate the steps leading up to ,christ and ,his appearance on the earth4 ,first ,era1 the ,time of ,beginnings 7,genesis #a-aa3cb74 ,this extends from the creation of the world to the call of ,abraham4 ,we have here set forth the connection of the world with ,god1 the beginning of life and beginning of sin1 which rendered salvation necessary4 ,second ,era1 the ,theocracy4 ,the record is found in the books of ,genesis1 ,exodus1 ,leviticus1 ,numbers1 ,deuteronomy1 ,joshua1 ,judges1 ,ruth and #a ,samuel4 ,this period is known as the ,theocracy because it marks the direct rule of ,god over ,his people4 ,it lasted from the covenant of ,god with ,abraham to the anointing of ,saul as king4 ,we here see the beginning of the chosen family1 and nation1 what laws and precepts were given it and what fortunes befell it4 ,this training time shows ,god's high standards in the laws and precept given this ,israelitish people4 ,third ,era1 the ,monarchy4 ,the record is found in the books of #a and #b ,samuel1 #a and #b ,kings1 #a and #b ,chronicles1 ,psalms1 ,jonah1 ,amos1 ,hosea1 ,micah1 ,joel1 ,isaiah1 ,nahum1 ,zephaniah1 ,habakkuk and ,jeremiah4 ,we have here the story of the rise1 glory1 division and fall of the ,jewish monarchy4 ,the people desired a king and the king sought to rule by his own will rather than the will of ,god4 ,we note ,god's desire to make this nation a ,holy ,nation and its sin and failure4 ,the function of the prophets was to declare the sin of the nation1 to set the right way before it and seek to lead it back to ,god1 but the nation would not heed the voices of the prophets1 hence the fall of the monarchy4 ,the coming of the perfect king and kingdom under the ,messiah is prophesied4 ,the work and place of ,christ is foretold by the prophets4 ,fourth ,era1 the ,captivity4 ,the record is found in the books of #b ,chronicles1 ,jeremiah1 ,daniel1 ,ezekiel and ,obadiah4 ,the people rejecting ,god are taken into captivity4 ,in this captivity the people turn to ,god in their affliction1 their worship is purified and the hope of the coming of the ,messiah grows very strong4 ,fifth ,era1 the ,restoration4 ,the record is found in the books of ,ezra1 ,nehemiah1 ,haggai1 ,zechariah and ,malachi4 ,the people purified by their captivity and uplifted by their hope of the coming ,christ are restored to their own land4 ,sixth ,era1 the ,christian4 ,the record is found in the books of the ,new ,testament4 ,the ,christian era is ushered in by the coming of ,christ and the fulfillment of ,god's promises4 ,the mission of the ,jewish nation finds its fruition in ,christ and the coming of the ,saviour of all mankind4 ,it will be seen from this very brief summary of the eras how ,god gradually revealed ,himself and ,his plan for the spiritual enlightenment of all men4 ,the necessity also of studying each book1 not only in its own plan but in its group place1 in order to find its meaning1 cannot be too earnestly commended4 ,,credibility ,it is natural that a book demanding our belief in such great things should be asked for its credentials and that these credentials should be subjected to the most searching investigation4 ,the ,bible has nothing to fear1 however1 from the keenest scrutiny of any scholar who has only the desire to get at the truth4 ,the trouble begins when a critic1 who is hostile to its spiritual truth or who has a theory to maintain1 takes a part in the investigation2 even then the truth is sure1 in time1 to assert its rightful claim 7,acts #e3ci74 ,the fact of different interpretations of the same set of facts in different times1 but leading to the same practical results1 must also be taken into consideration4 ,all men do not receive the same truth in the same way while they may be one at heart in the fundamentals 7#a ,corinthians #ab3d-ad74 ,the ,bible welcomes any and all searching of its claims2 it stands out in the open2 it has won its way amongst mankind not by the might of those who advocate its claims1 but by the power of the truth within its pages4 ,some of the arguments for the credibility of the ,bible are here given4 ,the ,argument from ,history4--,back of all questions of authorship1 date and composition of the books of the ,bible1 is the one great question1 ,are the records true to the facts8 ,is the ,bible1 in plain words1 true history8 ,the writers of the ,new ,testament use the historical argument4 ,they speak of the things most surely believed amongst us and of the testimony of eyewitnesses 7,luke #a3a-d2 ,john #ai3ce2 #ba3bd1be74 ,the disciples were not to go forth preaching a subtle philosophy1 but were to be witnesses of certain facts and were to testify of the things which they had seen and heard 7,acts #a3h74 ,peter's speech upon the day of ,pentecost is a recital of facts4 ,paul's argument for the resurrection of ,christ is based upon the testimony of eye-witnesses 7#a ,corinthians #ae3a-bj74 ,if ,god has manifested ,himself in the person of ,jesus ,christ we need to know it through the best of testimony in regard to the fact4 ,the record of the ,new ,testament is made to this end4 ,the writers of the ,old ,testament profess to give us statements of facts in regard to ,god's dealings with the ,israelitish people4 ,the critical dealing with each of the books of the ,old ,testament is all to the intent whether it fairly represents a historical situation4 ,the older scriptural narratives show of the doings of other nations than the ,israelites1 they describe situations in times long past1 where owing to broken and imperfect records1 it has been difficult to get at the exact facts4 ,unfortunately in some quarters the tendency has been to cast doubt upon the ,old ,testament writings where the statements were not corroborated by a research in the archives1 often very imperfect1 of other nations4 ,but happily this state of affairs is being changed and confidence in the historicity of the ,old ,testament records is being greatly strengthened by the investigations of the archaeologists in the ruins of the great empires of ,egypt1 ,assyria and ,babylonia with which ,israel came so closely in contact4 ,until recently the ,old ,testament stood alone in its assertion of a comparatively high civilization antedating ,moses and ,abraham1 but now we know from excavations made in ,nippur and other buried cities that the contention of the ,bible is true to the letter4 ,the situation in ,egypt and ,palestine about the time of the ,exodus is made plain by the ,tel-el-,amarna tablets4 ,the history of first and second ,kings is not only corroborated but amplified by the monuments4 ,much yet remains to be done along this line1 some views may have to be changed1 but the period of destruction has passed and that of construction has begun4 ,the ,argument from ,prophecy4--,the ,old ,testament prophets were not only the preachers of righteousness for their own times and their own nation1 but they had a mission to other nations and times as well4 ,their ruling idea was the establishment of ,god's kingdom upon earth4 ,they taught the unity1 spirituality1 holiness1 justice and goodness of ,god4 ,they made predictions in regard to ,egypt1 ,babylon1 ,assyria1 ,syria1 ,moab1 and their cities1 when they were at the height of their power2 these predictions were remarkably fulfilled4 ,they foretold the captivity and restoration of ,israel4 ,their great subject was the expectation of the ,messiah and the ,messianic ,kingdom4 ,the prophecies in regard to the ,christ became more and more explicit as the time drew near2 they declared ,his mission1 ,his prophetic power1 ,his kingly office1 ,his priestly activity1 the circumstances of ,his coming through a man1 a nation1 and in a definite place4 ,the ,arguments from ,vitality1 ,adaptability and ,growth4 #a4 ,vitality4 ,the religions of ,babylon1 ,egypt1 ,greece and ,rome died with the nations which gave birth to them4 ,the religion of the ,bible1 shows its divine author in its vitality and power to outlast the religions with which it has come in contact4 ,empires1 systems of thought1 mighty kings1 great men rise and have their day and pass away1 but this book lives on4 ,here is a vitality which persists in spite of any and all adverse circumstances and influences4 #b4 ,adaptability4 ,the ,bible is at home with all races in all climes4 ,it adapts itself to all conditions of life1 the most humble and the most exalted4 ,the ,asiatic1 the ,african1 the ,european1 the ,american accept it as their languages and dialects4 ,it makes its own way into the remotest quarters of the globe and is found wielding its power in the hut and the palace4 ,more popular than any book that has ever been published1 its sales1 of millions of copies a year are ever increasing1 because it comes with a message from ,god direct to the heart of man4 ,,questions ,what is the ,bible8 ,how is it not like and 7,matthew #f3f2 ,mark #a3ce2 ,psalm #ee3ag2 ,daniel #f3aj74 ,the ,approach of ,man to ,god4--,all men pray at some time or other1 whether fitfully or constantly1 in weakness or in strength1 in sorrow or in joy4 ,some men pray because it is their chiefest delight to do so1 and some pray because necessity drives them to it2 but they all pray4 ,prayer is a constant element1 and the impulse to pray is ever present to human nature4 ,man has been called a religious and praying animal1 because of this universal desire of men to come into some touch with the power over them4 ,this tendency is shown in lands where the true spiritual knowledge of ,god is lacking and where men deify and adore objects of nature4 ,the sun1 the earth1 the stars1 trees1 mountains1 waters1 winds and carved images have all been made divine objects of adoration and prayer1 because of the desire of man to find or place the supernatural in them4 ,paul said to the men of ,athens when he saw the altar to the ,unknown ,god3 ,whom therefore ye ignorantly worship ,him declare ,i unto you 7,acts #ag3bc74 ,all the research of natural science is to find out what is the ,ultimate ,power behind all the phenomena of nature4 ,man by his very nature seeks to approach ,god4 ,he is driven by an inward impulse to come to ,him4 ,hence1 where men do not have the true light by which to approach ,god or reject it there are found all sorts and kinds of caricatures of religion4 ,what are the proper means of approach to ,god through prayer8 #a4 ,right knowledge and faith4 ,he that cometh to ,god must believe that ,he is1 and that ,he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek ,him 7,hebrews #aa3f74 ,this is life eternal that they might know ,thee the only true ,god and ,jesus ,christ whom ,thou hast sent 7,john #ag3c74 ,god is above all and in all4 ,there are no other gods before ,him4 ,he is supreme1 manifested as ,father1 ,son and ,holy ,spirit4 ,we come at once here to the ,great ,personal ,power1 beyond whom there is no greater4 ,we do not look upon ,him as a cold abstraction or blind force1 but as a loving1 kind ,father4 ,he desires to do more for us than we can ask or think4 ,no man prays to ,god in the right way who does not first of all have a proper conception of ,god4 #b4 ,right attitude of the heart4 ,if ,i regard iniquity in my heart the ,lord will not hear me 7,psalm #ff3ah74 ,again the prayerless prayer of the ,pharisee began with ,i and the burning of incense before himself4 ,no man1 cherishing something in his heart which he knows to be contrary to the will of ,god or who only seeks to foster and advance his own selfish interests1 will come1 or desire to come1 or can come into a very close communion with ,god4 ,a wrong attitude of the heart keeps many men from the enjoyment of ,god's presence1 and makes them choose to remain away from ,his sanctuary4 ,no matter what the sin1 however1 if a man truly desires to get it out of his heart that man can come at once into close touch with ,god 7,isaiah #a3ae-ai2 ,psalm #ea2 ,revelation #g3ad74 #c4 ,right subjects of prayer4 ,the advancement of the ,kingdom of ,god and the spiritual interests of man come first4 ,too many prayers move in the narrow circles of self and purely physical wants2 they take no wide sweep out over larger interests4 ,god knows that we have physical needs that must be supplied 7,matthew #f3bf74 ,jesus said1 ,is not the life more than meat and the body than raiment 7,matthew #f3be78 ,and by ,his urgency ,he would have our prayers rise higher than our physical wants into an infinitely larger sphere4 ,then ,god will more than bless us and take care of those things about which we are now so anxious 7,matthew #f3bf-cd74 #d4 ,persistency 7,matthew #aa3ab74 ,it is difficult to deny a persistent man who1 when thwarted in one way1 begins to plan and act for the object which he seeks in another way and who will not be put off4 ,christ commended the way of the persistent man to those who sought ,god in prayer4 ,he gave examples of the widow who continually importuned an unjust judge until he listened to her plea and gave her justice 7,luke #ah3a-h71 and of the man who would not take no for an answer when he wanted to borrow bread from a neighbour at midnight 7,luke #aa3e-h74 ,he said1 ,ask1 and it shall be given unto you2 seek1 and ye shall find2 knock1 and it shall be opened unto you 7,luke #aa3i74 ,men who do not persist in their praying will fail to receive the higher blessings and the larger benefits which otherwise ,god would gladly bestow upon them4 ,if men know how to give good gifts to their children when they ask for them1 then much more ,god knows how to grant the best things to men when they ask ,him4 ,the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence1 and the violent take it by force 7,matthew #aa3ab74 ,the ,approach of ,god to ,man4--,how does ,god come near to man8 ,does ,he hear when men pray to ,him8 ,can ,he and will ,he answer prayer8 ,these questions are all simply and plainly answered in the ,scriptures4 ,there is no doubt expressed here that ,god comes near to men and will hear and answer when they pray to ,him4 ,the ,lord is nigh unto all them that call upon ,him1 to all that call upon ,him in truth 7,psalm #ade3ah2 #aci3g-ab2 ,ephesians #c3bj74 ,christian experience answers these questions in the same affirmative way4 ,multitudes of ,christians testify that ,god comes near to them and that ,he hears and answers their prayers2 there are many recorded and remarkable answers to prayers4 ,it is only when the testimony of the ,bible and the experience of ,christians are set aside that difficulties appear which seem very formidable4 ,one of the chief objections urged against ,god hearing and answering prayer is the discovery of the widening sphere of what is called natural law in the ordering of the universe4 ,where ,god was formally looked upon as directly controlling in certain things1 it is pointed out that we now can plainly state the causes and the working of the laws which produce certain results4 ,according to one theory ,god is shut out of ,his universe2 and according to another1 ,he is shut up in ,his universe2 on either hypothesis the direct control is out of ,his hands4 ,hence1 why pray8 when our prayers even if they reach ,god cannot be answered4 ,this objection from the domination of law annuls the freedom of ,god4 ,it is like looking at a great piece of complicated machinery1 and having it explained how part depends upon part and1 because the dependence is plainly shown1 being asked to believe that the maker and controller is under its power4 ,we are asked to-day to concentrate our attention upon the levers1 the springs and the pulleys and all the machinery of the universe rather than upon the first great ,cause and ,ruler of all4 ,it is assumed in this objection that much more is known of the laws and forces which govern the universe than really is4 ,prof4 ,john ,fiske says in his lecture on ,life ,everlasting1 ,i once heard ,herbert ,spencer say1 you cannot take up any problem in physics without being quickly led to some metaphysical problem which you can neither solve nor evade4 ,again he says1 ,the more things we try to explain1 the better we realize that we live in a world of unexplained residua4 ,widening knowledge is throwing back into the lumber room many much vaunted theories of origins4 ,many wrong conceptions of the order of nature have in recent years been radically changed4 ,it is freely acknowledged to-day by the foremost men of science that no man fully understands the order of nature4 ,under the present limitations of human knowledge ,god cannot be shut up in or out of ,his universe4 ,further research may show that such shutting up to be impossible2 for in the end we are to depend not upon our ignorance but upon our knowledge of the universe for ,god's free control of all things4 ,already the light begins to dawn when it is seen that all the natural forces and matter itself are beginning to reveal their origin and control in one ,great ,master ,force4 ,but in this we but return to the biblical statement ,in the beginning ,god 7,genesis #a3a74 ,we are perfectly justified in believing1 in the intelligence of ,god when we see so many evidences of intelligence in the world1 and the freedom and personality of ,god1 when we note the freedom and personality of man2 for however we may argue that man is not free or personal we believe that he is and act upon this belief in all the practical affairs of life4 ,the created thing is not greater than its creator or the law greater than the lawgiver4 ,god is greater than the universe or man4 ,god as all powerful1 and as intelligent and personal can be approached by man and comes near to him through his communion in prayer with ,him4 ,it is perfectly possible for ,god1 in ,his providential wisdom and power1 to answer the prayers of ,his people4 ,it is an every-day occurrence for man to deflect the beams of the sun and make nature's laws do what they would not have done if left to themselves4 ,we know men to be personal and to be changed by petitions to their mercy and entreaties to use their power in certain directions4 ,we believe that ,god1 infinitely greater than man1 can be entreated and will use ,his power for the benefit of the petitioner4 ,it is not unreasonable for men to pray for material and spiritual blessings4 ,while the sphere of prayer may be narrowed in certain directions by what we know of nature's processes1 it has been greatly widened in other directions4 ,,the ,,model ,,prayer ,this is the ,lord's ,prayer which ,christ gave ,his disciples when ,he preached the ,sermon on the ,mount 7,matthew #f3i-ac7 and when one of ,his disciples said to ,him1 ,lord teach us to pray 7,luke #aa3b-d74 ,it is the prayer of prayers4 ,it is the best and most beautiful1 the simplest and yet the deepest1 the shortest and yet the most comprehensive of all forms of devotion4 ,only from the lips of the ,son of ,god could such a perfect pattern proceed4 ,it embraces all kinds of prayer--petition1 intercession and thanksgiving2 all essential objects of prayer1 spiritual and temporal1 divine and human1 in the most suitable and beautiful order4 ,it has been divided1 and this is the natural division1 into three parts1 an address1 six petitions and a doxology4 ,the ,address4--,our ,father who art in heaven 7,matthew #f3i74 ,this phrase ,our ,father shows the paternal relation which the ,almighty sustains to us in ,christ and the filial relation which we bear to ,him through faith in ,christ4 ,it also reminds us that since we have a common ,father in ,god1 we are all brothers in ,christ4 ,the phrase1 ,who art in heaven shows us our heavenly origin and that our home is in our ,father's house4 ,we use the word our before ,father and by it mean to embrace in prayer all the children of ,god4 ,in using the word1 ,father we at once say we believe in a personal good ,god at the heart of all things and controlling all1 one who loves and cares for us supremely 7,galatians #c3bf2 ,ephesians #b3ai2 ,psalm #ajc3ac2 ,matthew #g3aa2 ,john #a3ab1ac2 ,romans #h3ad1ae74 ,the first three petitions refer to ,god4 ,first ,petition4--,hallowed be ,thy name 7,matthew #f3i74 ,god's name stands also for ,his word1 ,his day and ,his commandments4 ,god's name is hallowed when we think and speak of ,him with reverence and love4 ,any man who speaks of ,god's name with contempt or takes it in vain at once shows his position in regard to ,god4 ,the character of a man and of a community is shown by the respect or disrespect in which ,god's name is held4 ,hence in praying ,hallowed be ,thy name we pray not only that ,god may be rightly worshipped but for the upbuilding of the character of men and communities4 ,holy1 holy1 holy1 is the ,lord of hosts3 the whole earth is full of ,his glory 7,isaiah #f3c2 ,john #ag3c2 ,matthew #e3af2 #a large things4 ,the last three petitions refer to man and his needs4 ,fourth ,petition4--,give us this day our daily bread 7,matthew #f3aa74 ,this supplication calls our attention to the fact that we are dependent upon ,god for daily food and that we are to ask ,him to supply our bodily wants4 ,daily bread includes food1 raiment and shelter and all that belongs to our temporal necessities4 ,the answer to this prayer may be in health1 bodily and mental strength to procure daily bread1 but nevertheless it comes from the hand of ,god and ,he should be thanked for it as well as asked for it 7,deuteronomy #h3aj2 ,psalm #ade3 #ae1af2 ,proverbs #cj3h74 ,fifth ,petition4--,forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors 7,matthew #f3ab74 ,the word debts here means sins4 ,in asking for transgressions4 ,be not overcome of evil but overcome evil with good 7,romans #ab3bj1ba74 ,if ye forgive men their trespasses your heavenly ,father will also forgive you1 but if ye forgive not men #f3ac74 ,in this petition we acknowledge our weakness and proneness to go astray4 ,we seek for ,god's strong power to guard us from and in all temptations of the flesh and spirit4 ,we ask for final ,jesus ,christ as the ,saviour of men4 ,the world was full of evil4 ,society was corrupt4 ,the state was bad4 ,there were many giant wrongs crying out for the reformer4 ,the apostles might have devoted themselves to the causes of social and political reform with splendid success4 ,they might have bought only a gradual and purely friendly approach to the people whom they wished to influence1 as we often do now1 with some success1 but the ,new ,testament writings show that they believed that in the person of ,jesus ,christ they had a more powerful remedy for bad social and political conditions than any other which they could urge4 ,in ,christ they found a supreme object of service2 for ,him they were willing to give up houses1 lands1 position1 even life itself 7#b ,timothy #d3f-h72 for only through ,him1 they preached1 could the world be truly reformed4 ,why then potter with temporary and minor remedies when the permanent and great remedy was at hand8 ,times have changed since the apostolic days1 but for any lasting good in reform work ,christ is still the great remedy4 ,he must be at the centre of all social1 political and temperance betterments or they are destined to fall short of the largest success4 ,the ,place4--,where shall men serve the ,christ8 #a4 ,in the heart2 there is a goodness of conduct on the part of some men which has no relation to their heart's desire and is simply a cloak worn for appearance's sake4 ,with this sort of goodness ,jesus had no sympathy and denounced it as hypocrisy 7,matthew #f3a-cd2 #bc3bg1 #bh74 ,christ's ,christian life can be lived and manifested here it is quite sure to stand the outward strain4 #c4 ,in the community4 ,the disciples of ,christ were commanded to begin their first service in ,jerusalem 7,acts #a3d1h71 where ,jesus had been the most persecuted and was finally crucified4 ,it was no easy task for them to begin to preach ,jesus1 where they were the most looked down upon4 ,but the command was justified when the day of ,pentecost came with the marvellous moving power of the ,holy ,spirit 7,acts #b74 ,there can be no clearer teaching from this than that a ,christian man should begin to serve ,christ1 testify for ,him and work for ,him in the community in which he resides no matter what the adverse conditions are4 ,here is the sanction for home missions4 #d4 ,abroad4 ,personal ,work4--,in winning persons to the new life there is an admitted need of a work of the individual for the individual1 but it is a task from which many draw back4 ,yet it is right here that the most effective service may be accomplished4 ,every man who receives ,christ becomes in a certain sense a trustee to enlist others in ,his service and to give to them the light of life4 ,christ said to ,his followers1 ,ye shall be witnesses unto ,me 7,acts #a3h74 ,jesus was no recluse1 ,he went out amongst men and sought them 7,mark #aj3de7 in the market-place1 in the fields and by the 7,john #d3d-bf7 and others4 ,this personal work of ,christ with individuals shows the importance ,he attached to the winning of persons one by one to ,himself4 ,many of the most important teachings are brought out in ,his personal conversations4 ,the win one movement which has been inaugurated in certain churches is very important4 ,it had its incentive in the narrative of ,john 7#a3dj-ea71 who tells us how ,andrew won ,peter and ,philip won ,nathanael by personal appeals to follow ,christ4 ,if all the followers of ,christ in all the churches would each win one soul for ,christ every year there would be no more complaints about decadent churches4 ,training ,others for ,service4--,personal work has its limitations in the time and strength of the individual who does it4 ,jesus thoroughly understood this fact and at the outset of ,his ministry began to train a band of followers who would carry on ,his work after ,his resurrection4 ,not only did ,he train a select company of twelve but also other men4 ,we read in ,luke1 the ninth chapter1 that ,he sent out ,his twelve disciples to do the work which ,he had been doing1 and in the tenth chapter we are told that other seventy were also appointed to carry on a similar work4 ,careful instructions were given the seventy as to what they should do4 ,the need 7,luke #aj3b7 and the danger 7v4 #c7 of the work were impressed upon them4 ,they were instructed how they were to approach the people1 what they were to teach and what they were to do in case they were rejected 7vs4 #d-aa74 ,they returned from their journey with great joy over its success 7v4 #ag74 ,this multiplication of self through the inciting and training of others to do work in which the individual is interested often leads to far-reaching results4 ,there are many people who desire to advance a cause and are willing to devote themselves to it1 but they have no power to set about it themselves4 ,there is any quantity of this usable and helpful material1 in our churches1 ready to be made of service for the ,master4 ,here is the waste that every professing ,christian is not set to advance the kingdom of ,god4 ,it is not only what a ,christian may do himself1 but what he can get others to do1 which counts4 ,teaching4--,many men go wrong from erroneous thoughts about ,god and the importance of a right character4 ,too frequently those who have come to a saving knowledge of ,christ are content to rest satisfied with it4 ,no effort is made to instruct others in a belief which has helped them4 ,the church believes in a teaching ministry1 but has not yet come to fully believe in a teaching laity4 ,the laity for the most part assumes a receptive attitude4 ,our ,bible-schools might be doubled in numbers and effectiveness if ,christian men and women1 well qualified for the task1 could be induced to respond to the strong demand for more teachers4 ,there is no reason why ,bible instruction and ,christian teaching should be wholly confined to ,sunday4 ,it is time that the church made an aggressive move upon the week-days and began the establishment of night schools 7for a definite term7 for the systematic study of the ,bible for adults and short after day school catechetical classes for children4 ,these classes could and should be made auxiliary to the ,sunday ,bible-school4 ,in them there would be time for that larger instruction which is so much needed and for which no opportunity is found under the present arrangement4 ,besides1 much talent not available upon ,sunday1 at the time of the session of the ,bible-school1 might be utilized4 ,this is an age of clubs organized for the study of ancient and modern secular literature1 where careful and scholarly papers are read upon subjects given out long in advance4 ,this study-club idea ought to be utilized by the church for the investigation of the best literature which the world knows1 namely1 that found in the ,bible4 ,jesus said1 ,go teach 7,matthew #bh3ai1bj71 of the teaching and example of ,jesus ,christ4 ,before ,he came to earth and taught men how to be compassionate towards the unfortunate ones there were no such institutions4 ,wherever ,jesus went1 when ,he was in bodily form upon this earth1 the people thronged ,him for the healing touch4 ,this is another way in which the followers of ,christ may reach men1 namely through the healing touch4 ,in the fierce struggle in the world1 for a living and a position1 many men are worsted and trampled upon2 such men need the brotherly help of those who have been with ,christ4 ,there are many sick1 men4 ,in following ,christ1 and placing ,him in a right light before men1 ,christians must have a devotion to ,him which will endure and stand steadfast through suffering4 ,it is often only through the sacrifice of self that the best things in life are attained4 ,if so be we suffer with ,him that we may be also glorified together4 ,for ,i reckon that the sufferings of the present time are not failure to find happiness arises in large part from going wrongly about it4 ,men seek happiness through relaxation and the lowering of the moral standards4 ,men ask1 why should we obey this or that law of ,god1 man or our moral nature1 if it bars the way to our enjoyment8 ,let us eat and drink for to-morrow we die2 and eating and drinking they go out into a wild and barren land of sorrow4 ,again men seek happiness through the abundance of things2 as if a human soul1 born in the image of ,god1 could be satisfied with mere things4 ,the ,conditions of ,christian ,happiness4--,christ1 as the and who hold ,his sacraments1 the seals of eternal life1 in honour4 ,another definition is3 ,the church is a holy kingdom established by ,god on earth1 of which ,christ is the invisible ,king4 ,there are some organizations calling themselves ,christian churches which have substituted certain philosophical doctrines in place of the principles of ,jesus ,christ1 but it is a fact of history that in proportion as the ,divine ,lordship of ,christ has been exalted the greater has been the growth of the church4 ,the church has been able to meet the needs of the people as ,he has been lifted up ordinances of the ,lord's ,supper and ,baptism1 its faith in ,god the ,father1 in ,his ,son ,jesus ,christ and in the ,holy ,spirit1 now begins its victorious career4 ,human ,elements4--,the divine institution of the church has been subject to the admixture of human elements1 there was a traitor amongst the twelve apostles4 ,the organization and the doctrines have been tampered with in the interest of human ambitions and the pride of human philosophy1 but no institution has shown itself so adapted to satisfy the great needs of men of all conditions of life1 to purge itself when the human elements proved too great a burden1 and to outlast all man-made organizations4 ,authority and ,teaching4--,the church and its ministers have authority to teach through ,christ and what ,he has commanded4 ,there is a certain and quite definite body of truth4 ,this body of truth1 preached in the heart of heathendom or in the most fashionable church1 in the most highly civilized country1 is quite sure to produce certain definite results in awakening men from their sins and causing them to lead a new life4 ,by their fruits ye shall know them 7,matthew #g3ae-bj74 ,jesus said1 ,all power is given unto ,me in heaven and in earth4 ,go ye therefore and teach all nations1 baptizing them in the name of the ,father1 and of the ,son and of the ,holy ,ghost4 ,teaching them to observe all things to bring all men into fellowship with the ,master4 ,there was an intense enthusiasm for the faith and propagation of it4 ,there was an extraordinary religious elevation and purity of conduct4 ,the churches set themselves to eradicate the selfishness in man1 out of which all forms of injustice sprang and aimed to affect the moral renovation of the individual and of society4 ,there were abuses which arose out of the former lives of believers2 it is surprising1 considering the evil influences surrounding the early churches1 that they were so few4 #e4 ,but there arose in the midst of a gross heathenism1 with all its great immoralities1 a rapidly growing community1 which demanded purity of life and conduct from its communicants and supreme allegiance to ,christ1 the ,lord and ,saviour2 how strong it was is shown by the fact that the ,roman ,empire tried to stamp it out1 failed1 and was taken captive itself by the religion it had despised4 ,,the ,,work ,,of ,,the ,,modern ,,church ,the ,chief ,end of the ,church is to carry on the work which brought ,christ into the world 7,luke #ai3aj2 #ag3cc2 #ae3a-bd2 #bd3dh2 ,acts #a3h74 ,all things should be made to serve this purpose4 ,the ,activities and methods of work have a wide range4 ,what is highly successful in one community may prove1 however1 a failure in another4 ,the means1 which produce large results at one time1 tried again in the same place1 at another time1 sometimes show small or no results4 ,the problem of each church and community needs to be studied1 that means may be properly adjusted and adapted to the ends sought to be accomplished4 ,it is remarkable how ,jesus adapted ,himself to the times and circumstances4 ,he said to ,peter and ,andrew1 ,follow ,me and ,i will make you fishers of men 7,matthew #d3ai72 ,he spoke to them in a language they were able to comprehend2 to fish for fish meant care1 understanding of their habits and much toil to accomplish the desired results4 ,in the conversations with ,nicodemus and the women of ,samaria ,jesus arrives at the same end but uses entirely different means4 ,the letters of ,paul fit exactly the needs of the churches to which they are addressed4 ,it is the really earnest spirit desiring to bring men to ,christ which will produce the largest results2 this spirit appeals to men and compels them to listen2 hence it is the cultivation of this spirit which is most earnestly commended4 ,mere machinery of effort is doomed to failure1 but when the living spirit is in the wheels and is adequate to the moving of them1 the results are sure to be large4 ,the disciples of ,christ knew all the facts about ,christ's life1 death and resurrection1 but they were not equipped for their great work until after they had spent much time in prayer and the ,holy ,spirit had come in power2 then they became mighty men in the upbuilding of the church4 ,worship4--,men not only need to be urged to be true to their consciences1 but their consciences need to be informed4 ,one of the great functions of the church is to teach men how to worship ,god aright2 to do this they must have right thoughts about ,god4 ,jesus said1 ,god is a ,spirit3 and they that worship ,him must worship ,him in spirit and in truth 7,john #d3bd74 ,men must be led in their worship by a proper exposition of the ,scriptures1 by prayer and by praise4 ,the place of the church in this matter is clearly defined in the ,new ,testament1 it can be taken by no other institution2 and no other organization has so high a mission as this1 to bring man into harmony with ,god4 ,fellowship4--,man is a social being and he seeks contact with his fellow men4 ,many of the worldly ways in which this fellowship is sought are ways which lead to the wrecking of man1 body and soul1 or to the obliteration of all the finer feelings4 ,the mission of the ,christian ,church is to strengthen the social bond by seeking to cultivate all the better impulses and finer feelings in man1 and to place society on a firmer footing in love1 purity and righteousness 7#a ,john #a3c2 #a3e2 ,acts #b3db2 #a ,corinthians #a3i74 ,bible ,study4--,christianity is a book religion as well as one in which ,god enters into spiritual communion with man4 ,the ,church has ever acknowledged its duty to teach the ,scriptures1 for in them it finds the truths which it desires to inculcate 7,john #e3ci74 ,evangelization4--,beyond the bounds of the ,church there are those1 near and far away1 who need to be taught about the gospel of ,jesus ,christ4 ,more and more the church is feeling the responsibility for the welfare of individuals and of society and of the state4 ,if there are great evils and giant wrongs which need to be remedied1 they have their origin in the evil in men's hearts4 ,for the cure of bad hearts there is no remedy in all the world save that given by ,jesus ,christ4 ,hence the activity of the church in seeking to evangelize men not only at home but throughout the world4 ,there are three things which every church needs to realize in order that this work may be prosecuted with the utmost vigour and enthusiasm4 #a4 ,a clear conception of what the church is and its relations to ,god and man4 #b4 ,the opening of the eyes to the fact of sin in the world and its destructive power upon the soul of man1 here and hereafter 7#a ,john #a3h2 ,romans #e3ab2 ,john #h3cd2 ,matthew #ah3g-aa74 #c4 ,that the only real help or salvation of man's soul is through our ,divine ,lord and ,saviour1 ,jesus ,christ4 ,neither is there salvation in any other3 for there is none other name under heaven given among men1 whereby we must be saved 7,acts #d3ab2 #af3cj1ca2 ,philippians #b3aj2 #a ,john #b3ab2 ,romans #aj3ac2 #a ,john #a3g1i2 ,matthew #i3f74 ,the ,equipment for the carrying on and extension of this work cannot be too good4 ,the cause frequently lags from making it one of the interests of life and not the chief care4 ,every church building should express in usefulness and beauty1 in all its appointments1 man's thought of a temple erected to the great and living ,god4 ,,the ,,hope ,,of ,,the ,,church ,the ,establishment of the ,kingdom of ,god ,upon ,earth4--,the prophets of the ,old ,testament had two great thoughts which they continually presented1 namely1 the coming of the ,messianic ,king and the establishment of the ,messianic kingdom4 ,isaiah said1 ,unto us a ,child is born1 unto us a ,son is given3 and the government shall be upon ,his shoulder and ,he shall be called ,wonderful1 ,counsellor1 ,the ,mighty ,god1 ,the ,everlasting ,father1 ,the ,prince of ,peace4 ,of the increase of ,his government and peace there shall be no end 7#i3f1g74 ,when ,john the ,baptist came1 he proclaimed the coming of this ,king and kingdom 7,matthew #c3aa1ab2 ,john #a3a-bh7 and when he saw ,jesus he said1 ,behold the ,lamb of ,god which taketh away the sin of the world4 ,this is ,he of whom ,i said1 ,after me cometh a man who is preferred before me3 for ,he was before me 7,john #a3bi-cc74 ,and ,i saw and bare record that this is the ,son of ,god 7v4 #cd74 ,jesus spoke much about ,his kingdom1 the kingdom of heaven and the kingdom of ,god4 ,he sought to explain by many parables and by direct discourse what this kingdom was like2 it is mentioned by name many times in the ,new ,testament 7,matthew #ac3aa1ai1bd1ca1cc1dd1de1dg1 #eb2 #bb3b2 #be3a74 ,he claimed that ,he was the ,messianic ,king 7,matthew #bf3fc1fd2 #bg3aa1cg2 #bf3ec1ed2 #af3af1ag2 ,john #ad3i2 ,luke #bb3fg1fi2 ,john #ah3cg2 ,mark of this kingdom of ,god is plainly shown4 ,there are ,four ,conceptions of the ,kingdom of ,god set forth in the ,bible4 #a4 ,the reign of ,god over all ,his creatures4 #b4 ,the reign of ,god over men and nations4 #c4 ,the reign of ,god over ,israel4 #d4 ,the reign of ,god as ,divine ,love over human hearts1 believing in ,him and constrained thereby to yield ,him grateful affection and devoted love4 ,it is this fourth conception which is most prominently set forth in the ,new ,testament4 ,the special work of ,christ on earth was to reveal the supreme rule of ,divine ,love4 ,the ,church and the ,kingdom4--,it is the care of the church to forward the establishment of this kingdom of ,divine ,love everywhere1 in the heart of the individual1 in society1 in the business world and in the national life4 ,for this we pray1 as ,christ taught us1 ,thy kingdom come4 ,thy will be done in earth1 as it is in heaven 7,matthew #f3aj74 ,,questions ,what is the ,christian ,church8 ,define it4 clean1 pure and right1 in all its relations1 or society and the state will suffer grave consequences4 ,certainly1 in the past1 the institutions of society and state have been seriously weakened only when the moral decay of the family has first set in4 ,there are many organizations which have for their special care the fostering of the social and political life1 while the strengthening of home ties has been sadly neglected4 ,to the individual the good character of the home is of the utmost importance1 for his growth in all the finer things which pertain to morality and spirituality4 ,the ,difference in ,homes4--,one ideal of a home begins and ends with the externals2 a great house1 a splendid service and fine furnishings4 ,everything is here made to bend to the more or less perfect realization of this material ideal4 ,when all is attained that is possible in this direction1 and this end1 and only this end1 is sought of outer adornment1 it is found that the essentials of a true home life have been missed4 ,another ideal seeks for the cultivation of love between husband and wife1 and all the members of the family4 ,care and forbearance are urged and commended in speech and action4 ,there are set forth a mutual kindness1 a careful consideration of the feelings and a helpfulness in bearing burdens1 which exalt the soul and make life worth living4 ,according as this ideal is striven for1 and attained1 will the true home be realized4 ,many a man has wrecked his business1 betrayed his friends and gone down to a dishonoured grave in the struggle to surround his family with luxuries which he could not afford1 but no man ever sincerely tried to cultivate the graces of love and kindness in himself and in his family1 who did not succeed1 in a large measure1 in realizing the great purpose of the home4 ,the ,true ,home may be found1 and is found1 in great houses and in small houses1 where there is large wealth and where there is dire poverty4 ,it is not dependent upon circumstances but independent4 ,the great essential is love for those things which make a beautiful and strong character4 ,low standards of truth and morality in the family tend to reproduce themselves in exaggerated forms in the social life of the community4 ,individuals1 coming out of families where there is no love for the good and no regard for righteousness1 often become a serious threat to peace and good order4 ,no educational system can do very much for children with an evil family environment4 ,on the other hand the world is full of examples of men1 trained up in righteousness by their parents1 who have strictly kept to the path in which their feet were started4 ,,the ,,ideal ,,christian ,,home ,jesus honoured the home4 ,his birthplace was mean 7,luke #b3g7 so ,jesus ,himself learned and practiced the trade of a carpenter4 ,in living in this home at ,nazareth for thirty years of ,his life ,jesus showed that it was possible under hard outward conditions to live a noble life and to cultivate and practice those virtues and qualities which were afterwards so greatly to bless the whole world4 ,duties of ,husbands and ,wives4--,the beginning of every ,christian home is in a supreme affection between two1 a man and a woman4 ,for this cause1 ,christ said1 shall a man leave his father and mother1 and cleave to his wife2 and they twain shall be one flesh1 so that they are no more twain but one flesh4 ,what therefore ,god hath joined together1 let not man put asunder 7,mark #aj3g-i74 ,he honoured and sanctioned the marriage relation by ,his husband's food while cooking it1 he was justified in procuring a writ of divorcement from her4 ,jesus denounces this practice and declares 7,matthew #e3ca1cb2 ,mark #aj3b-ab7 that there is only one cause that justifies divorce4 #a4 ,love to one another4 ,in the various vicissitudes of married life1 and in the bringing up of children the bond which needs to be strengthened1 and the duty which needs to be urged1 is that of love4 ,love can alone carry husband and wife over the more difficult places of life4 ,paul says1 ,husbands love your wives1 even as ,christ also loved the ,church and gave ,himself for it 7,ephesians #e3be-cc2 ,colossians #c3ah1ai74 ,let every one of you so love his wife even as himself2 and the wife see that she reverence her husband 7,ephesians #e3cc74 ,no not a ,christian1 and where a strong love may be absent 7#a ,corinthians #g3ab-ag74 ,he further says1 ,unto the married ,i command1 yet not ,i1 but the ,lord1 let not the wife depart from her husband2 have been trained for great parts in the world in a religious household4 ,the old proverb has it1 ,like father1 like son4 ,if ,god is honoured by the parents and the home commended to ,him1 the in every human life is to learn the lesson of obedience2 if this is not well studied and practiced in the home1 the child1 when he grows up and goes out for himself1 will be quite sure to have a hard ,children1 when grown up1 are sometimes apt to forget the love and care bestowed upon them when they were young4 ,their parents become old and feeble and are often unable to look out for themselves4 ,in ,jesus' time there was a bad custom of repudiating parents who for any cause needed to be helped4 ,the children had only to say ,corban1 that is1 that their goods were dedicated to a sacred purpose1 to secure release from their filial obligations4 ,christ denounced this custom in the strongest terms and declared that the children ought to honour their parents by caring for them4 ,thus ,he became an advocate for the rights of parents as ,he had of the rights of children 7,mark #g3 #aa1 #g-ac2 ,matthew #ae3c-f74 ,when in ,his last agony1 on the cross1 ,jesus provided a home for ,his to minimize the importance of the home life and to undermine it4 ,there are four quite well defined lines of the attack upon the life of the family4 ,the ,assault ,upon the ,marriage ,relation4--,the moral leper advocates that marriage be dissolvable at will1 not by mutual consent alone1 but when either party to the contract desires its conclusion4 ,the church1 in its different branches1 stands as a unit against this iniquitous proposition4 ,but how far the civil power has yielded1 by the pressure which has been brought to bear1 is made manifest by the fact that in the different states of the ,union there are now recognized by the courts forty-six legal causes of annulling a marriage4 ,our courts are crowded with divorce cases and the suits which grow out of them in regard to property and the care of children4 ,that the odour of scandal1 going up from such cases is bad1 is unquestioned4 ,that the influence1 of such proceedings upon the morals of the country1 is evil is also sadly admitted4 ,a blow struck at marriage is one which is felt not only by the family but by society and the state4 ,the fall of the ,roman empire was preceded by an extraordinary laxness of the marriage tie4 ,it is time the church bestirred itself to oppose more strongly the theory and practice of the moral leper4 ,the ,assault ,upon the ,quiet of the ,home4--,in the modern stress and strain of life there is need of a quiet place in which to rest1 to get acquainted with ,god1 to know one's family1 to live to the best things and to get ready again to engage enthusiastically in the daily battle of life4 ,the home is designed to furnish such a place of rest1 when the work of the day is done2 it is here1 in a ,christian home1 that there should be an atmosphere of supreme love and care4 ,it is1 however1 when night comes that all the attractions1 which appeal to the love of excitement1 put forth their most strenuous efforts to draw to them the inmates of the home4 ,there are amusements and amusements2 a person1 however1 who looks only to be amused seeks by and by those of the strongest flavour and those which border very closely on the forbidden land4 ,the love of excitement grows upon what it feeds and soon1 to the habitual pleasure-seeker1 the quiet atmosphere and love of the home no longer appeal2 he has begun a chase for excitement and pleasure which will never satisfy him4 ,multitudes of wrecked homes and burned out characters1 show the disastrous work of this assault upon the quiet of the home4 ,the ,assault ,upon the ,purity of the ,body4--,we are told by ,paul that our bodies are temples of ,god and members of ,christ and therefore they should be kept pure and clean 7#a ,corinthians #c3af1ag2 #f3ae1af74 ,yet a certain class of so-called reformers are seeking to teach men that to sit in a saloon drinking the beverages there served out1 and which defile the purity of the body1 makes for manhood4 ,the modern saloon1 which destroys the purity of the body1 is one of the most successful of all agencies for the demoralization and the destruction of the home4 ,once it has fastened its hold upon a man1 the time which he should spend with his family is spent in defiling his body in this place2 the money which should be spent1 in clothing and feeding his wife and children1 is squandered here2 until the home loses its hold upon him and he selfishly indulges his appetite1 no matter who suffers4 ,we are faced with actual conditions and no substitutes of better kept saloons or purer beverages can help very much4 ,it is a travesty of the truth to call a saloon a working men's club2 it is his destruction4 ,what is actually needed is a reform which will send men1 who frequent saloons back to their homes4 ,the real problem is not how to reform the saloon1 but how to make the home better so that father1 mother and the children may take delight in spending their evenings there4 ,the policy of some social organizations1 which work in the slums of our great cities1 seems to be by providing great public dance halls and fostering the saloons to draw the people still further away from the home life and to make it harder to maintain it4 ,after all the only real remedy for the saloon habit is ,christianity4 ,it is only when ,christ comes into the heart of a man that he begins to care for his home and to spend his evenings there4 ,the ,church1 then as possessing the lure for the home1 ought to take more seriously to this work in the slums4 ,but the trouble is that the slums do not receive very pleasantly those who seek to cleanse their hearts and bodies1 but they do take kindly to the agencies1 and often throng them1 which look kindly on those things which really keep them down1 and insure them miserable homes4 ,still it remains true that the teaching of ,christianity1 even when received with hostility1 is the only leavening power for better things in the slums4 ,it is one of the hard things to cleanse a man's body before his heart is made clean1 but let his heart be purified1 and the purity of the body will follow2 then the first thought of that man will be for his home and its betterment4 ,the ,assault of ,freedom of ,speech4--,in no place is there more need of kindliness of speech and manner than in the home1 yet in no other place is there more plain speaking4 ,the mask of pleasantness1 which may be worn all day in business or social relations1 may be in the home laid aside2 and the character revealed and the vigour of language used may easily drive away every vestige of happiness4 ,when people live together under the same roof the feelings become very tender and are easily hurt4 ,what is said outside may be thought little of1 but in the home it is different4 ,take us the foxes1 the little foxes that spoil the vines3 for our vines have tender grapes 7,song of ,solomon #b3ae74 ,incompatibility of temper is a reason sometimes given for the breaking up of a home1 but the real reason is an undue familiarity and freedom of speech4 ,because persons live together in families there should be no license to say everything and anything1 no matter who is hurt4 ,home happiness is a tender plant1 it needs much care and watching1 but when it blooms the flowers are of a rare beauty of form and their fragrance exceeds that of all others4 ,,the ,,preservation ,,of ,,the ,,home ,how may the home be preserved and made to serve its great end8 ,there are three ways1 amongst a greater number1 which are here indicated4 ,personal ,care4--,all betterment of the home must begin with the individual and every individual has a chance to exercise this care as his lot is cast in some family4 ,thought1 time1 money1 all need to be employed in working out in a practical way the ideal of the true home4 ,placing the ,home ,under the ,care of ,god4--,there is a need of the reinstatement of the custom of family worship2 the place and time where and when the family is commended to ,god and placed under #ab3af-ba4 ,,the ,,ideal ,,in ,,the ,,business ,,world ,there is often a wide difference between the methods actually employed in doing business and when they should be4 ,good men who are in the thick of the battle of competition and rivalry with other firms in the same line of trade1 are the quickest to admit this fact4 ,they would gladly see things managed so that every employee should be satisfied with his wages and hours of work and every competitor and customer gratified by the treatment he receives4 ,business as a ,fight4--,the truth is1 says a recent eminent writer on this subject1 modern business is a fight4 ,at bottom it is a question of strength and courage4 ,in this fight there are all sorts of men engaged2 men1 who are honourable and upright and who fight fairly1 taking no mean advantage1 yet nevertheless fighting strongly for place1 power and wealth4 ,over against this company of men are those who are fair only when they are compelled to be fair and who contend with any means1 good or bad1 for the objects which they seek to attain4 ,it is this latter class which upsets trade1 causes great commercial and banking houses to fail1 and casts suspicion upon all corporations1 by the sale of watered and fraudulent stocks4 ,it is this idea of business as a struggle which causes working men to strike sometimes rightly1 against great abuses1 and sometimes wrongly1 over minor matters which might easily have been adjusted if they had been taken up in the right way4 ,business as a ,service4--,so long as the ideal of the business world is that business is a fight1 little can be done to improve the present conditions under which capital and labour work and suffer4 ,there is nothing which is so costly as war1 nothing which is so far-reaching in its disastrous effects and which leaves such a trail of misery behind it4 ,industrial war is no exception to the rule4 ,but why look upon business as a fight8 ,already a new ideal is before the world1 that of service4 ,this is what business really is1 it carries things from the place where they are abundant to where they are not1 it seeks to feed1 to clothe1 to house all mankind and to facilitate travel and commerce4 ,upon the earth1 and in it1 enough of all things has been provided for all the inhabitants--the table spread by ,god has been bountifully furnished--if only there were a proper distribution no one need want4 ,it is this matter of unwillingness to unselfishly serve others which slows down commerce to-day4 ,when1 however1 men shall cast aside all other ideals save that of being of the largest service to their fellow men we shall have a new order of things4 ,men will no longer seek to accumulate for themselves alone and the labourer will work with his full strength and a glad enthusiasm4 ,no man ever did his best work without some great ideal before him which refreshed and quickened all his energies4 ,if the business man would save himself from becoming sordid1 and the poorest paid working man from becoming sullen and hardened1 they should keep ever before them this vision of service4 ,,ownership ,if the ideal of service is accepted in the business world as true1 then the question arises1 ,what or whom shall man serve8 ,shall it be a thing1 silver1 gold1 house or land8 ,shall a man serve another man as a man8 ,whatsoever a man serves he becomes subject to4 ,he is dominated by it and his thoughts go no further4 ,every man is tempted to serve the lower instead of the higher4 ,jesus was tempted 7,matthew #d3a-aa7 by certain seeming great and temporal advantages to relinquish ,his service of ,his ,father1 but ,he made it clear once and for all that the supreme object of service should be ,god 7,matthew #d3aj71 ,him only shalt thou serve4 ,paul also exhorts all men1 in all occupations1 to keep in mind first of all the service of ,god and of ,christ1 and to do whatever they do to ,god4 ,then if they administer great or small affairs1 if they are masters or servants1 they will seek to please ,god and1 having this higher ideal1 will do far better work1 than they otherwise would1 in every sphere of life 7,ephesians #f3g2 ,colossians certain we can carry nothing out 7#a ,timothy #f3g2 ,psalm #di3ag2 ,job #a3ba74 ,christ emphasized the uncertain tenure upon which all property is held by the parable of a certain rich man who had fool1 this night thy soul shall be required of thee3 then whose shall those things be which thou hast provided 7,luke #ab3af-ba78 ,,trusteeship ,man as a ,trustee4--,there is no truth more clearly brought out and stated in many ways in the ,bible than that man is in the position of a trustee4 ,jesus used the parable of the talents to illustrate this great truth 7,matthew #be3ad-cj74 ,it is plainly taught in this parable that man is under obligations to ,god4 ,no man ever brought himself into the world4 ,no man ever originated his own talent2 some men have been endowed with what seems to be greater possibilities than others4 ,to one man has been given the talent for administration1 to another that of a ministering spirit1 to another mechanical genius1 to another that of wealth and to another the power of song or speech4 ,but whatever the talent given1 great or small1 it is distinctly set forth in the ,new ,testament that it is given in trust and is to be used in the service of ,him who has bestowed it4 ,the business man is expected1 by his ,lord1 to buy and sell1 not for himself alone1 but as a trustee4 ,in this office it is of great importance that a man be found faithful to the confidence reposed in him 7#a ,corinthians #d3a1b2 ,luke #af3b1aa2 ,romans #ad3ab2 ,luke #ai3aa1 #bg74 ,a man in a trusteeship1 if he is honest1 will not waste or squander the property entrusted to his care4 ,he will treat fairly and honestly all men who work for him4 ,the men working for him will feel that they are also trustees seeking to use their skill and time1 so that the best interests of ,god and man may be served4 ,man's ,right to ,hold ,property and ,do ,business is recognized by ,christ4 ,in the parable of the pounds 7,luke #ai3ab-bf7 ,he commends those who used the money in trading to gain more and were ready when the nobleman returned to render a good account4 ,he condemns the man who having received one pound made no effort to increase it4 ,he says1 ,if ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon1 who will commit to your trust the true riches 7,luke #af3aa74 ,he made no demand of ,his disciples1 so far as the record shows1 to give up their property4 ,the case of the young man of great wealth 7,mark #aj3ag-bg71 who would follow ,christ1 and of whom ,jesus required that he should divest himself of his property1 is fully in accord with ,jesus' teaching concerning wealth and the holding of property4 ,the key to the whole matter1 on this point1 is found in what ,jesus says of this very case1 ,how hard it is for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of ,god 7,mark #aj3bd74 ,this young man did not possess his wealth but his wealth possessed him1 he was the servant of his money4 ,jesus' teaching is that a man should hold money in trust4 ,jesus warned men of the risk of possessing property1 lest it become their master4 ,money1 considered simply as money1 is a hardening influence and in the restive desire to get more the best things in men are quite sure to be eliminated 7,matthew #ac3bb74 ,the danger lies in the power of money to gather affection and to absorb trust1 thus displacing ,god 7,matthew #f3ai1bj1bd2 ,luke #ah3bd2 #ab3ae74 ,the ,reckoning4--,there comes a time when every trustee is called upon to render an account of how he has administered the business entrusted to his care 7,matthew #be3ai2 ,luke #ai3ae74 ,this time may be long delayed1 and in the meantime many abuses may grow up1 and it may appear that no accounting will ever be demanded2 these conditions are plainly pointed out by ,jesus in the parables of the vineyard 7,luke #bj3 #i-af7 and the tares 7,matthew #ac3bd-cj71 but it is also made equally clear that in the end every man's work shall be judged4 ,in this reckoning there can be no making of things appear as they are not4 ,there can be no juggling with the accounts4 ,every business man must show his books 7,revelation #bj3ab7 and how he has dealt with that which was entrusted to his care 7#a ,corinthians #c3aa-ae2 ,romans #b3af2 ,matthew #be3ca-df74 ,it is the looking forward to the time of reckoning which makes men1 who are in offices of earthly trust1 pay careful attention to the investment of funds and painstakingly investigate the security offered4 ,jesus would have every man equally careful in the investment of his time1 labour1 talent and money for he will surely be called upon to give an account of his stewardship4 ,in the uncertainty of the time of reckoning every business man is expected to be ready for an investigation at any time when the examiner shall appear 7,matthew #bd3db-ea2 ,mark #ac3cd-cg2 #a ,thessalonians #e3f74 ,the ,profit of business done1 as a service in the sight of ,god1 is declared to be sure and large4 ,whatever sacrifices may have to be made will be more than amply repaid 7,matthew #ai3bg1bi2 ,luke #ai3 #af-ai74 ,it is a well-known fact that1 in the business world at large1 there is a very great percentage of failures and too many mark not only wrecks of business1 but of characters4 ,the reason often given is that the eye is fixed too frequently and earnestly on immediate and large profits for self4 ,but no man ever yet made a failure who openly and honestly sought in his business to be of service to ,god and his fellow men4 ,real failure in business is a failure in character4 ,a business man may be carried down by unexpected circumstances or the fall of other firms but1 if he keeps his character intact1 he is no failure2 on the other hand a man who has taken a selfish advantage of others may be made rich in goods1 but he is a rank failure in character4 ,the standard of character in business is after all that by which the small or the large dealer in any kind of goods is judged1 and by business men themselves2 business transactions are constantly being raised to a higher level by the enforcement of this standard4 ,,principles ,if employers and employees are ever to be brought into harmony1 strikes and lockouts abolished1 the industrial forces attain to their highest efficiency and the products of the world distributed with the utmost facility1 it must all come about not by the invoking of courts of law1 but by the bringing in of a new sentiment and the adoption of certain principles4 ,a sentiment is at the base of the present troubles and1 until it is changed1 they will be likely to continue and the world at large will suffer the consequences4 ,so long as men think only of the inequalities of life--and there are glaring inequalities--the unfair distribution of wealth and the comparatively obscure positions which they hold1 they will be discontented and will fight to better themselves1 no matter who suffers4 ,the spirit of discontent and contention finds lodgment in the heart of the humblest working man1 up through all grades1 to that of the richest employer1 for no man1 however wealthy1 ever thinks he has enough of this world's goods2 those who have the most are often the most eager in grasping for more4 ,courts of law can only regulate the more flagrant outbursts of the prevailing sentiment1 they do not and cannot remedy the causes4 ,what are some of the principles which are destined to help the industrial world out of its difficulties8 ,the ,observance of the ,golden ,rule4--,therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you1 do ye even so to them 7,matthew #g3ab74 ,just before giving this rule ,jesus was speaking of a man whose chief object was to serve ,god 7,matthew #f3cc7 and in the beginning of the ,sermon on the ,mount1 ,he showed the blessedness of the character which was to be sought 7,matthew #e3a-af71 before this rule could be rightly carried into practice in any life4 ,thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself 7,matthew #bb3ci7 is in the same line of thought as this rule1 but1 and here is the point1 we do not want certain men to love us as they love themselves1 the thief1 the gambler1 the drunkard1 and we do not want them to do to us as they do to themselves4 ,in order then that this rule be rightly observed there must be first an avowed allegiance to ,god4 ,thou shalt love the ,lord thy ,god 7,matthew #bb3cg7 precedes the command to ,love thy neighbour4 ,it is only when men love ,god aright and obey ,his commandments that they can come into proper relations with their neighbours4 ,hence1 in seeking ,god first and obeying the ,golden ,rule1 the whole outlook of employer and employee will be changed1 the attention will not be fixed upon the inequalities of life or the making of a fortune1 but upon the desire to be of service2 each man will look into his work to improve it and seek to help his neighbour2 whatever the compensation1 he will seek to do his best1 serving as in the sight of ,god4 ,a just consideration of the rights of others is the very beginning and end of true social economy4 ,it is difficult to enforce any law which works against a public sentiment1 but let the latter be in favour of the former and the law will enforce itself4 ,let the sentiment in the industrial business world be in favour of a supreme service and the difficulties and trials of strikes and lockouts would disappear2 the energy1 time and money now spent in fighting could be turned to the benefit of employer1 employee and consumer4 ,cooperation4--,jesus never set class over against class4 ,he mingled with the wise and the unwise1 the rich and the poor4 ,he sought to draw men together in a common brotherhood2 this brotherhood was not composed of employers or of men who worked at a certain trade but of those who sought to build up the kingdom of righteousness4 ,there is cooperation to-day amongst men but it is the coming together to build up some trade and make it strong that it may contend more stoutly for its rights4 ,there have been various attempts for the federation of unions1 but they have too often been for the purpose of coercing a like federation of employers' unions into taking a desired course of action4 ,the world awaits a cooperation of all men in the business world upon the basis of love for each other and seeking for the best interests of all concerned4 ,this again is a sentiment but it is one which must work against the prevailing sentiment of selfishness and looking out for self alone1 if ever a better state of things is to be brought about4 ,the ,acceptance of ,jesus ,christ as the ,great ,example and ,leader4--,no man was ever so marvellously endowed with power as ,jesus1 yet that power was used for the good of mankind4 ,he said ,all power is given to ,me in heaven and in earth 7,matthew #bh3ah74 ,he made it a proof of ,his business on earth that the blind received their sight1 the lame walked1 the lepers were cleansed1 the deaf heard1 the dead were raised 7,matthew #aa3b-f74 ,the man who follows ,christ is the one who makes his business minister to the wants of men and helps them to better conditions1 whether he be ruler or ruled4 of society was arrogant and that of moral restraint there was none at all or it was exceedingly weak4 ,the situation was such that many men despaired of anything better and were secluding themselves regeneration of a corrupt society1 and who are decidedly in the minority1 always are prone to step outside and seek to do their work there1 and sometimes it may be the best to do so4 ,jesus however entered into the midst of society4 ,he went to feasts 7,luke #e3bi1cj2 #g3cf2 #ai3e74 ,he was present at a wedding 7,john #b3 #a-aa74 ,he said that the kingdom of ,god was like unto ten virgins who prepared to attend a wedding 7,matthew #be3a-ac74 ,so constantly did ,he enter into social intercourse with men that the ,pharisees and the scribes criticised ,him severely for it 7,luke #ae3b7 but ,jesus justified ,his course in being social to save by the three parables2 the lost sheep1 the lost coin and the lost boy 7,luke #ae3a-bd74 ,he gave a great feast at which about five thousand men were present besides women and children 7,matthew #ad3ae-ba74 ,he told what garments a guest should wear at a wedding1 what seat he should take and who should be invited 7,matthew #bb3aa-ad2 ,luke #ad3g-bd74 ,he did not wait for men to come to ,him1 but ,he went out to meet them by the seaside1 and in the city4 ,he sent ,his disciples out also that ,he through them might do as wide a work as possible4 ,there is no trace of the recluse in ,jesus4 ,he desired to meet people of all classes and mingle with them4 ,at the last ,he gathered ,his disciples about ,him1 in an upper room1 and instituted a memorial supper as the chief ordinance of ,his church 7,luke #bb3ai2 ,matthew #bf3bf-cj74 ,everything that ,jesus did in meeting people in a social way had a purpose and that was to level up society and cause it to conform to the principles of the kingdom of ,god4 ,wherever ,he went ,he led the conversation to the better things of this kingdom4 ,the man who quotes ,jesus and ,his relation to society1 as a justification of attendance upon numerous social functions1 ought also to carry out the purpose of ,jesus in bringing others to a better life2 he ought also to lead the conversation to the same topics4 ,if society sways any man from the right purposes of life1 and he finds that he cannot breast its temptations he should remain out of it or increase his spiritual strength4 ,the ,christian ,society1 composed of a body of persons associated for the common object of exploiting ,jesus ,christ and ,his principles1 at first was almost wholly social4 ,the early ,christians met in each others' houses4 ,they partook of meals in common after which they observed the ,lord's supper4 ,the basis of organization was the fraternal equality of believers4 ,the barriers between the rich and the poor1 the learned and the unlearned1 seemed to drop of themselves4 ,no pressure was brought to bear to force men together in this fraternal organization1 but they were united by a common love for ,jesus ,christ1 their ,lord1 and like ,him they were at home in all social circles4 ,no law1 no urgency of appeal1 no pressure1 can to-day abolish class distinctions or the conflict between capital and labour4 ,it is only when men's hearts are filled with love for ,christ that they cease to antagonize and begin to care for each other and a true social bond is formed4 ,,social ,,institutions ,there is no problem of importance to humanity which has not some relation to the ,gospel of ,christ4 ,there is a social question and it is a live question4 ,it is closely related to the wrongs and inequalities of life1 in wealth1 in position1 in privileges and in opportunities4 ,there is a social impulse which causes men to get together in smaller and larger groups and through these groups to found institutions which will aid in abolishing the wrongs and in lessening the inequalities4 ,it is in and through social institutions that the larger life of the individual is expressed and he is able to bring about certain results1 working in connection with other individuals1 which he alone could not bring to pass4 ,in the social organism there is specialization of work1 one member performing one function and another another and all working in harmony for a common purpose 7#a ,corinthians #ab3ad-bg74 ,there are three great social institutions through which men seek the larger life1 the family1 the church1 and the state4 ,they exist in some form1 elementary and crude it may be1 wherever man is found4 ,christianity entering into all human relations1 has much to say about their construction and specific powers and duties4 ,its mission is not only to regenerate the heart of the individual but to penetrate and transform society4 ,its work is to leaven the whole mass of human interests with a divinely purifying power4 ,it touches every act and every relation of humanity with a life from above1 and interpenetrates all that a man can do with a new spirit and a heavenly light4 ,it affects governments1 moulds education1 rectifies manners1 sweetens fellowship1 makes the common ways of men better1 healthier1 happier1 as well as holier4 ,its endeavour is to realize a divine society not hereafter only1 but upon earth2 to have the kingdom of ,god come not in the skies alone or in the future merely1 but here and among men4 ,the ,family4--,this is the earliest and most primitive social institution4 ,we are all born into some family1 however imperfect its form4 ,upon the family depends in large measure the good or bad training of the children2 here they receive their earliest impressions and what they are taught in the family often dominates all other instruction4 ,if the bond between husband and wife is not regarded as binding and sacred the institution of the family becomes corrupt and a menace to the good order of society4 ,jesus spoke in no uncertain way about the sacredness of the marriage relation 7,matthew #ai3c-i2 #e3cb7 and the obedience which children owed to their parents 7,matthew #ae3d-f74 ,the ,church4--,man has been called a religious animal4 ,his desire to worship is instinctive4 ,he seeks the care and protection of a stronger power than himself4 ,even a man who says he has no religious opinions will often be found1 when questioned1 to hold most strongly to things which he believes4 ,individuals1 then holding to certain religious beliefs1 naturally come together and form groups in which they worship in common4 ,this is the social impulse applied to worship1 because man likes to do things in connection with his fellow men4 ,christ sought to direct men to the proper object of worship 7,john #d3 #bc1bd2 #ad3f-aa71 the way to pray 7,matthew #f3e-ae71 the way to enter into life with ,god 7,john #c3a-ba7 and the character which was required of those who desired to lead the divine life 7,matthew #e3a-af2 chapters #e-g74 ,men who believe in the principles of ,jesus ,christ associate themselves together in a ,christian church4 ,the ,government4--,everywhere we find men uniting for mutual protection against their enemies1 the guarding of property1 the settling of disputes between individuals1 the administration of justice and the exercise of other powers4 ,this government may take different forms from the one man power in a monarchy to that of the most liberal democracy4 ,the necessity for some form of government seems plain4 ,christ recognized the duties which a man owed to the state when ,he said1 in answer to the lawyer's question1 ,is it lawful to give tribute unto ,caesar1 or not8 ,render therefore unto ,caesar the things which are ,caesar's2 and unto ,god the things that are ,god's4 ,he saw the corruption in the government of ,his times as plainly as any one1 more plainly in fact1 but ,he was showing the necessity of the functions of government4 ,he submitted to the decree of the state condemning ,him to death although ,he knew it to be unjust1 and that the power was not with ,pilate 7,john #ai3aj1aa2 ,matthew #bf3eb1ec74 ,what ,jesus sought to do was to usher in a new kingdom of righteousness4 ,he taught ,his disciples to pray for the coming of this kingdom upon earth4 ,thy kingdom come4 ,thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven4 ,he was continually speaking of this kingdom 7,matthew #ac3bd-eb74 ,he declared that all nations should come to ,him finally to be judged 7,matthew #be3ca1cb74 ,one great theme of the prophets of the ,old ,testament was the righteousness1 purity and justice of the new government which ,god desires to set up amongst men4 ,social damage comes to men and great evil is done to individuals when social institutions are not patterned after the plans given by ,christ2 these are divine institutions when they seek to approach to the divine ideal4 ,much of the unquiet and restlessness of the masses of men to-day and the great wrongs in the world are due to the tampering with the marriage relation1 the substitution of the worship of wealth and worldly power for ,god1 and the seeking of government positions1 not to be of service to men under ,god but to rule over men4 ,social health and vigour will come in the family1 church and government when men turn again to ,god and obey and serve ,him through the social institutions with supreme love and enthusiasm for ,his service4 ,,social ,,aims ,in ,socialism4--,there are many schemes presented to-day under the broad term of ,socialism which have for their proposed end the betterment of the people1 the abolishment of all wrongs and the bringing in of a new order of things2 where every man shall do a minimum amount of work and receive a large return for what he does4 ,these plans vary from the mildest of reforms--and from the public collective ownership of land and capital and the public collective management of all industries with the recognition of certain private rights--to the taking of all land and capital absolutely from private control1 the abolishing of the right to hold private property1 the giving up of the marriage relation1 the suppression of the church and the renunciation of the government4 ,the trouble with extreme schemes of this sort is that they seek in the end to abolish the individual and private rights1 even in marriage4 ,but all social and moral health and wealth is but the aggregate of individual health and wealth4 ,no community and no class of men are better than the men who compose them4 ,if there are evils in the present system they would continue1 in a magnified form1 in the new4 ,there is here the old political fallacy1 made over into a new social fallacy1 that by mere putting of the ballot into every man's hands the government would be purified of all its evils4 ,we must begin with the individual to purify him before the state or society can be made much better4 ,it is the levelling down1 the bringing the better working man to the rate of work and quality of the poorer1 which is sought1 rather than the levelling up4 ,the common goods scheme was tried early in the career of the ,christian ,church and it failed to work because of the element of selfishness which came in 7,acts #b3 #dd1de2 #d3cd2 compare #e3a-aa72 this has been the cause of the breaking up of numerous social and communistic settlements and communities4 ,in ,christianity4--,when the precepts of ,christianity have been accepted and lived up to by any man or company of men1 they have never failed to stand all the social tests which have been applied to them4 ,they seek the regeneration of the individual and the purification and usefulness1 for him1 of all the social institutions4 ,they endeavour to abolish evil desires and practices in the individual and all social1 industrial and political wrongs4 ,they give full play to all man's powers in private and in public matters4 ,they have never been proved inadequate to their task1 but they have found much refractory material with which to deal4 ,they level up not down and seek for every man a new moral and physical life2 they present before him the very highest ideals of life and service4 ,it is a fact that it is only where their light shines that the working man has anything like decent wages or hours of labour4 ,in ,china1 ,india and ,africa we find the labourer gets little or nothing for his toil4 ,it is only in ,christian countries that we have anything approaching true social equality1 in others no man may rise out of his caste or class4 ,take the ,united ,states and we find that a number of our presidents have come from the poorest families and most of our influential and wealthy men have risen from the ranks of the common people4 ,it is the lack of ,christian principles in individual1 industrial and public life which is at the bottom of the present day social unrest4 ,in ,christ1 the ,social ,reformer4--,when ,he came upon the earth and before ,his time all labour was performed by slaves without pay and with but a dole of food4 ,the mighty buildings of ,egypt1 ,assyria1 ,babylonia1 ,greece and ,rome were all built by the unrequited toil of slaves4 ,such would have continued to be the state of things had not ,christ said1 ,the labourer is worthy of his hire 7,luke #aj3g2 ,matthew #aj3aj74 ,that a working man should receive wages or any pay for his labour was revolutionary in that time for ,plato1 ,cicero1 ,lycurgus held that it was a disgrace to touch the implements of toil4 ,christ dignified labour by toiling at the bench as a carpenter4 ,if ever labour is to gain any real advantage it must be through taking ,christ as a leader 7,matthew #aa3bh74 ,he taught that the true bond of social equality was a moral and spiritual one 7,luke #h3ba2 ,matthew #bc3h2 ,philippians #c3ac-ae2 #d3h74 ,in the ,social ,settlement4--,what is a true social settlement8 ,this question is not so easily answered4 ,there are all kinds and sorts of social settlements4 ,some minister to the health of the community in which they are situated and some do not4 ,the saloon has recently put forth its claim to the doing of social service1 but no one ever slandered a saloon keeper by affirming that he had anything in view save a selfish motive4 ,whatever little social service he may render is more than counterbalanced by the social havoc wrought by his trade4 ,again there are social settlements where the principal thought and effort seems to be to provide somewhat questionable vaudeville entertainments and frequent public dances2 the leaders say they are compelled to adopt these features to hold the people2 here comes in again the question of social damage to the community in which they are situated4 ,the true social settlement1 with all its features of mental and physical culture1 is one which places ,christ at the front of all its work and keeps ,him there4 ,it is ,christ and ,christ alone who can really help the individual and the community and there are numbers of social settlements where ,christ is kept at the head of the work4 ,the church has changed its methods very much during the past few years4 ,seldom is a church now built which does not have its well appointed kitchen1 dining-room and parlours and other social equipments4 ,it is according as a church uses these adjuncts1 whether they really help it1 or not1 to do its work4 ,the church is powerful as a force for social betterment not as it does or does not open its doors to lecturers1 plan social entertainments1 give dinners and hold festivals--these may be helps--but in so far as it sways the inner life of the community4 ,this inner life1 influenced in right ways1 finds expression in a better individual1 home and community standard4 ,this standard makes for the uplifting of the social state outside as well as inside the church4 ,the principle is1 not social for the sake of being social1 but social to save4 ,it is quite certain that unless the church sets up its ideals in the community1 a worldly community will set up its ideals in the church4 ,the more spiritual a church as a social settlement is the stronger the social bond becomes between rich and poor1 the learned and the unlearned4 ,,brotherhood ,the ,christian ,social ,brotherhood is not a brotherhood of a class but of all classes and conditions of men4 ,to-day the popular idea of brotherhood is the association of men of a certain trade4 ,there is a strong tendency for social groups to be formed1 which are exclusive of all who do not conform to a certain standard in the industrial world and inclusive of all who do4 ,the members are looking for protection and mutual benefit4 ,christ said of ,his brotherhood1 ,one is your ,master1 even ,christ and all ye are brethren4444 ,one is your ,father which is in heaven 7,matthew #bc3h1i74 ,we find here the great principle laid down that there can be no true brotherhood without a common fatherhood4 ,christians are brothers because they have a common ,master and ,father hence they seek to do good not only to the members of the brotherhood but to all men1 because ,god is the ,father of all4 ,it is this thought that is to bring men up out of their selfishness4 ,the employer and employee will strive to do all they can for each other when deep down in their hearts they believe they are brethren in ,christ2 we shall hear no more then of injustice upon either side4 ,the church of ,jesus ,christ holds the only solution to the peaceful and happy settlement of the social unrest4 ,,questions ,what can be said of the social circle1 what does the word society signify8 ,what is the extent nothing4 ,the first question was1 ,is the state strong and prosperous8 ,the happiness or unhappiness of the individual was not considered4 ,the purity or impurity of the life of the individual was of little consequence4 ,the citizens existed for the state and to serve it and its ruler4 ,this idea has lingered long and is not entirely yet extinct4 #a4 ,jesus discovered the individual in the state4 ,he taught that the soul of one man is worth more than the whole world 7,matthew #af3bf74 ,jesus put the individual first and the state second4 ,this teaching was entirely new and revolutionary4 ,christ's principle was make the man1 the unit1 right and the state will be right4 ,he insisted that the test of the state is the kind of individuals it produces 7,matthew #g3af74 ,by their fruits ye shall know them 7,matthew #g3bj74 ,formerly the state was thought of as an institution to minister to the comfort or happiness of the ruler or ruling class4 ,christ reversed this when ,he declared that rulers existed to serve the state4 ,he said1 ,ye know that the princes of the ,gentiles exercise dominion over them1 and they that are great exercise authority upon them4 ,but it shall not be so among you1 but whosoever will be great among you let him be your minister2 and whosoever will be chief among you let him be your servant4 ,even as the ,son of ,man came not to be ministered unto1 but to minister and to give ,his life a ransom for many 7,matthew #bj3 #be-bh74 ,he is the greatest in the state who renders the greatest service4 #b4 ,he laid the foundation of a true state4 ,in the time of ,christ the common people had no choice in the selection or election of any officer of the state1 of high or low position4 ,popular government in any form was unknown4 ,if things went wrong people the power of protest and change4 ,it is for the people to send their representatives to the legislature1 to congress1 to parliament1 etc41 and to make and alter the laws when new laws or changes are needed4 #c4 ,he was a civil reformer from the inside4 ,jesus taught the necessity for the moral and spiritual regeneration of men before much could be done by the state in weeding out its evils4 ,he saw plainly the folly of trying to transform the character of the state solely by the coercive power of law4 ,satan tempted ,him to take the short cut1--seize power over men and then change the character in men 7,matthew #d3h74 ,to have become the kind of a king the ,galileans proposed in ,john #f3ae would have frustrated ,his mission4 ,he sought in society and politics what ,he sought in mountains1 languages and racial differences but by religions4 ,one people worshipped one set of gods1 while another people bowed down to other gods4 ,jesus set forth the large ideal of uniting all races and all peoples in one great spiritual kingdom 7,john #ah3cg2 ,matthew #bh3ai1bj2 ,acts #a3h2 #ag3bd-bg74 ,it is only as different peoples and nations are united in a common religion that there men lived4 ,a new kingdom 7,matthew #aj3cb-db2 ,mark #a3ad1ae7 was inaugurated with new ideals 7,matthew #e3a-af71 new principles and new aspirations1 which was to supersede the old social and political orders4 ,it was the preaching of this kingdom of ,christ1 and that men owed their first allegiance to it 7,acts #e3bh1bi71 which provoked the terrible persecutions of the first centuries4 ,christianity has much to do with this present life1 it has a panacea for all its ills and evils and it has a certain definite programme to carry out4 ,the ,christian hopes and works for3 ,the ,regeneration of the ,individual through faith in ,christ 7,john #c3e1ad-ba74 ,this is an inward change wrought in the soul by the grace of ,god4 ,while this is a work of ,god1 the responsibility for it rests with man4 ,god does not desire the death of the sinner4 ,by the sending of ,jesus ,christ ,god has shown ,his love for man while yet a sinner4 ,every unregenerate man either does not desire this new life or else feels that he never sought with all his heart to have ,god regenerate his soul 7,john #e3dj2 #a3d2 #e3bd2 ,isaiah #a3ah74 ,the regenerate man in ,christ thinks and acts from a new basis 7#b ,corinthians #e3ag2 ,galatians #f3ae74 ,it is only as the love of a man's heart is really changed and centred upon right things that he can be depended upon to walk in right ways4 ,a man may act right1 may be honest and upright from prudential motives1 but if his heart is evil the way of the righteous will be irksome to him and he may depart from it at any time4 ,the unmasking of the double life of a man1 every now and then1 shows how the heart's desire will have its way with a man who does not love ,god4 ,heart faith in ,christ leads a man to follow and be like ,him4 ,hence we have such a large emphasis placed upon work for and with the individual by ,christ and ,his disciples4 ,christ ,himself called ,his apostles to ,him one by one and ,he was continually holding conversations of the deepest interest with individuals 7,john #c3a-ac2 #d3f-bf74 ,the possibilities of the work of the individual ,christian for the individual non-,christian man are too largely left untried4 ,if every follower of ,christ should try to win one1 who did not follow ,him1 to ,his cause every year the good effects of such a campaign would be felt not only in the church1 but in every department of life4 ,all true reform work must begin with the regeneration of the individual4 ,the ,enlightenment of the ,social ,conscience4--,there is such a thing as a social conscience4 ,it is possible to say and do things in certain communities which would not be tolerated in others4 ,one town will not only sanction the liquor business within its boundaries but will resist all efforts to abolish it2 another town right beside it will have none of this iniquitous traffic4 ,lawlessness and immorality find a hearty welcome in certain cities and in others they dare not show themselves4 ,all this is due not to the perfection or the imperfection of the laws or to the large number or small number of men upon the police force1 but to an evil1 an apathetic or an enlightened social conscience4 ,the progress of the gospel of ,christ is often hindered or prevented by a hostile public sentiment 7,matthew #ac3eh2 #ag3bj2 #aj3ad2 ,luke #aj3aj-ab74 ,when ,christ sent forth ,his twelve disciples ,he recognized the strong opposition which their message and mission would often meet and said1 ,behold1 ,i send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves2 be ye therefore wise as serpents and harmless as doves 7,matthew #aj3af74 ,the disciples were taught to expect social ostracism and private and public persecution 7,matthew #aj3ag-bf74 ,there were times when they were to flee before the gathering storm of opposition and there were times in which they were to maintain their position to the death1 but even if they fled 7,matthew #aj3bc7 they were not to cease to preach the gospel4 ,it is the duty and the right of ,christians not only to seek for the regeneration of individuals1 but also to protest and work against social and political wrongs and to seek to create and strengthen a strong public ,christian sentiment4 ,the ,church of ,christ should be the conservator and promoter of high moral ideals in every city and town where it has a name and place and seek to extend its good influence into regions where it has no standing4 ,better ,conditions of ,living4--,the ,bible is always upon the side of the oppressed and down-trodden4 ,no laws ever enacted by any nation ever made it so easy for the working man as the ,mosaic ordinances2 every seventh day 7,exodus #bj3i1aj7 was a day of rest2 there were seven feasts in seven months which called for many other days of rest2 every seventh year 7,leviticus #be3b-g7 was a rest year2 and every fiftieth year 7,leviticus #be3aj-ag7 was one of rest and restitution4 ,christ everywhere championed the cause of the poor and the heavy burdened 7,matthew #i3cf2 #aa3bh-cj2 #aa3d1e74 ,but the ,bible also clearly sets forth the fact that little can be done towards bettering even the material conditions of living when men's hearts are not right towards ,god4 ,if a man lets the spirit of avarice reign over him1 no matter how much money he may have he will still want more and he will not care whom he oppresses to get it4 ,if the spirit of a purely worldly pleasure rules him his money will go into a bottomless pit and he will not care whom he makes suffer to get more money to gratify his insatiable desires4 ,better material conditions of work and living can only come from the adoption of high moral and spiritual standards and in advocating these the ,christian ,church to-day is the truest friend of the oppressed4 ,the ,maintenance of ,law and ,order4--,it is not an unusual thing for political parties to elect men to offices of trust and then to have these same men refuse to enforce the laws which they have sworn to uphold4 ,in consequence we have all kinds of abuses and evils growing up in the body politic4 ,too often the political race is for the honour and the spoils of position4 ,outside the political arena stands the ,christian ,church and it can1 if it will1 demand that clean and upright men1 whatever the issues of the parties may be1 be placed in nomination4 ,here ,christians may hold the balance of power4 ,if their loyalty is to ,christ first of all they will vote for no man for any office who is known to be of an evil character4 ,the maintenance of law and order depends in large measure1 in any community1 upon the ,christian sentiment of that community4 ,the ,turning of the ,world to ,christ4--,the ,christian's hope is that ,christ may be ,lord of and dominate the individual and the home life1 the social1 the business and the political worlds1 as well as the ecclesiastical4 ,the worship of ,god in ,christ ought not to be only upon a particular day or in a certain place1 but upon all days and in every place men should lift up their hearts to ,him 7,john #d3ba-bd74 ,if ,he is ,lord of all 7,john #a3a-ad2 #ad3i-ac7 ,he should be ,lord of all2 there is no matter too small and none too great to bring before ,him4 ,when ,christ said1 ,go ye therefore and teach all nations 444 teaching them to observe all things whatsoever ,i have commanded you 7,matthew #bh3ai1bj7 ,he meant that ,his teachings should be dominant over all the earth and in every department of life4 ,and for this we pray ,thy ,kingdom come1 ,thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven 7,matthew #f3aj74 ,it is only as this kingdom shall come in power that we can expect to better the conditions under which men live and work4 ,,hope ,,in ,,the ,,future ,,life ,christianity is not small in its anticipations1 its desires1 its aspirations and its plans4 ,it speaks of a large hope for the future1 so large that many men fail to comprehend its magnificence 7,john #aa3bc-bf2 ,mark #af3aa74 ,it declares that while the body may be placed in the grave1 the real man never dies4 ,man in all that he thinks and does lives with two worlds plainly in view1 the one that now is and the one which is to come4 ,the disciples immediately after the ascension of ,christ began to preach and teach the resurrection from the dead 7,acts #b3cj-cb2 #c3ae2 #d3aj1cc2 #a ,corinthians #ae3a-h74 ,they used this fact of the resurrection as a reason for the belief in ,christ as the ,saviour of men1 a forsaking of sin and an incentive to a life of righteousness4 ,they taught1 as ,jesus ,himself did1 that this life1 no matter how great its opportunities1 was but the vestibule to a new and larger life beyond the grave4 ,it is better to sacrifice everything in this life1 if necessary1 rather than to miss the glory of the life to come 7,matthew #e3bi2 #aj3bh2 ,mark #i3dg74 ,no good deed done in this life1 in the name of ,christ1 can fail of large reward in the life to come 7,matthew #ai3bh1bi2 #be3cd-dj74 ,by this emphasis1 which was laid upon the future life1 the horizon of thought and action was marvellously widened4 ,men were taught no longer that they were to exist for a few years and then go out forever into the darkness of annihilation1 good and bad alike1 but that they were to live forever4 ,conscious ,personal ,existence of the soul after death4 ,this fact is conspicuously taught in the ,gospels1 the ,acts1 the ,epistles and ,revelation4 ,in the world to come people are not shades or ghosts1 but they have certain bodies 7#a ,corinthians #ae3dd71 they know themselves to be and are known as the same persons who once lived on the earth 7,matthew #ag3b-d2 ,luke #bd3cf-dh2 ,john #bj3bd-bh2 #aa3be1bf2 ,luke #af3ai-ca2 #bc3db1dc74 ,christ said1 ,but as touching the resurrection of the dead have ye not read1 that which was spoken unto you by ,god saying1 ,i am the ,god of ,abraham1 the ,god of ,isaac1 and the ,god of ,jacob8 ,god is not the ,god of the dead1 but the living 7,matthew #bb3 #ca1cb74 ,eternal ,citizenship in heaven4 ,the aim of ,christianity is to make men righteous4 ,the abode of the blessed hereafter is one wherein dwells holiness1 purity and truth4 ,there are conditions and hindrances to the entering of the abode of the blessed4 #a4 ,conditions4 ,the great prerequisite to entering into the joy of heaven is righteousness1 perfect obedience to the law of ,god4 ,but every man of himself1 when he enters into an honest self-examination1 feels that he comes far short of the perfect keeping of the divine commands 7#a ,john #a3h1i2 ,romans #c3bc74 ,he needs forgiveness for past disobedience1 he needs help to lead a righteous life4 ,hence ,jesus ,christ1 the divine ,son of ,god1 came that through ,his life and death we might receive pardon for past sin and help to live the righteous life 7,john #c3af-bc74 ,what man could not do for himself ,jesus ,christ does for him 7,romans #c3bj-bf74 ,the disciples of ,christ were rightly enthusiastic in proclaiming ,him as the propitiation for man's sin and belief in ,him1 with all that it implied1 as the entrance gate into the heavenly life4 ,jesus said of ,himself1 ,i am the way1 the truth and the life2 no man cometh unto the ,father but by ,me 7,john #ad3f74 ,in ,my ,father's house are many mansions if it were not so ,i would have told you4 ,i go to prepare a place for you4 ,and if ,i go and prepare a place for you1 ,i will come again and receive you unto ,myself2 that where ,i am1 there ye may be also 7,john #ad3b1c74 #b4 ,hindrances4 ,the great hindrance to the entering of heaven is disobedience of ,god1 not only acts of disobedience but a state of disobedience1 where the soul of man desires to have no fellowship with ,god or ,his righteousness4 ,there is a disobedience of ,god through carelessness1 through ignorance and through willfulness2 there is little hope for a man when he deliberately turns his back upon ,god4 ,it is wonderfully shown in the ,bible how ,god has sought to make ,himself known to man and to save him here and hereafter4 ,every possible appeal has been made to man to turn to ,god4 ,the ,scriptures give no answer of hope for a happy hereafter for those who deliberately reject all of ,god's invitations and pleadings in this world 7,matthew #be3df2 ,daniel #ab3b2 ,john #e3bi2 ,romans #b3a-f74 ,the ,glory of ,heaven4--,the ,new ,testament writers vie with each other in striving to make plain the glory of heaven4 ,john describes it1 in a vision1 as a magnificent city of gold and precious stones1 wherein can come no evil thing 7,revelation1 chapters #ba1bb74 ,and the city had no need of the sun1 neither of the moon1 to shine in it3 for the glory of ,god did lighten it1 and the ,lamb is the light thereof4 ,and the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it3 and the kings of the earth do bring their honour and glory into it 7,revelation #ba3bc1bd74 ,the real glory of heaven1 however1 is not in its outward adornment or pageantry1 but in the triumph of righteousness and the supreme reward of constancy to the truth of ,god 7,revelation #g3i-ag74 ,the holiness of ,god is vindicated 7,revelation #d3h1i74 ,the tabernacle of ,god is with men 7,revelation #ba3c1d71 and every good deed stands out glorified in the clear white light of eternity4 ,every saint in heaven will feel that he has the hundredfold reward for all the sacrifices he made when upon the earth for the kingdom of ,god4 ,the effort of the ,new ,testament writers is to make the followers of ,christ joyfully do their work here1 much of which may be distasteful and difficult4 ,looking unto ,jesus the author and finisher of our faith2 who for the joy that was set before ,him endured the cross1 despising the shame and is set down at the right hand of the throne of ,god 7,hebrews #ab3b74 ,it is worth while to work for a limited future earthly reward2 it is much more worth while to work for a heavenly reward which shall endure throughout eternity4 ,,questions ,what can be said of the ,christian's hope in the present life8 ,what is the regeneration of the individual through faith in ,christ8 ,what is meant by the enlightenment of the social conscience8 ,how can better conditions of living be secured through ,christ8 ,how can law and order be maintained through the advancement of ,christian principles8 ,what is
