,,history ,,of ,,the ,,ghost4 ,when the ,hyde ,park second ,great ,exhibition in #ahfb had closed its doors1 and the reaction from the bustle attendant on the arrival and departure of country visitors had set in1 so that the halls and lecture rooms lately crowded with the numerous patrons of the old ,royal ,polytechnic were somewhat deserted1 there came to the aid of the ,institute a new invention1 which people by common consent called 8,the ,ghost40 ,the latter was matured in this wise3--,mr4 ,dircks1 a patent agent1 who had saved some property and was an independent man1 wrote a paper for the ,athenum ,literary ,journal1 in which he described an optical effect that could be performed with sheets of glass4 ,this paper excited no attention because the explanation of it was somewhat vague and unsatisfactory4 ,the ,christmas of #ahfb was fast approaching1 when ,messrs4 ,horne1 ,thornthwaite1 and ,wood1 philosophical instrument makers1 of ,newgate ,street1 invited the author to see a model which ,mr4 ,dircks had caused to be constructed4 ,this was the beginning of the ,ghost2 but as ,mr4 ,dircks said that an entirely new theatre must be built to show the effects which he allowed could only be seen by a few people placed in an upper gallery1 and then only by daylight1 it was no wonder that the ,crystal ,palace1 the ,colosseum1 and other places had all declined to have anything to do with ,mr4 ,dircks or his model1 which was now placed in the hands of ,professor ,pepper--so called because the ,directors of the then ,royal ,polytechnic had determined that his title should be ,professor of ,chemistry and ,honorary ,director of the above ,institution4 ,the title was not that of a hair-dresser or a dancing-master1 but was conferred upon him by express minute of the ,board of ,directors4 ,professor ,pepper had had his services in establishing classes at the ,royal ,polytechnic already recognised by the authorities at ,south ,kensington1 who gave him an honorary diploma in ,physics and ,chemistry of the ,committee of ,council on ,education some two or three years before the ghost was brought out1 and at a time when he was sole lessee of the ,polytechnic at a rental of #b1dhj per annum1 which had to be paid before a single lecture or entertainment was brought before the public4 ,the classes ,mr4 ,pepper established were for the study of ,drawing1 ,french1 ,german1 ,arithmetic1 and ,mathematics1 with1 of course1 ,chemistry and ,physics2 and pupils were admitted at very low fees in order to encourage the working men to attend4 ,he also arranged ,monday evening lectures for the working classes1 and reduced the admission to sixpence if the workmen came with proper tickets supplied by ,professor ,pepper1 but signed by the foreman under whom the men worked4 ,all this took place about the years #aheh-i1 and was continued until the ,institute finally closed its doors1 principally caused by the fall of the stone staircase1 and sold all off to a new limited liability company when ,mr4 ,pepper was giving courses of lectures at the ,crystal ,palace1 ,sydenham4 ,again1 for the last time1 and during the absence of ,professor ,pepper in ,australia1 where he stopped ten years1 viz41 from #ahgi to #ahhi1 a sale of the plant and machinery1 c41 of the ,royal ,polytechnic took place1 on the #bhth of ,february and three following days in #ahhb4 ,mr4 ,george ,buckland and his friends tried to secure the lease by purchase2 but1 not completing the purchase in time1 it was bought by ,quintin ,hogg1 ,esq41 who has greatly added to the size of the building1 which is chiefly devoted to classes1 at least fifty in number1 teaching all kinds of useful knowledge1 with a large day school for boys1 who are numbered by hundreds1 and are well and most efficiently taught by competent masters4 ,the ,laboratory has also been enlarged1 and is now under the able guidance of ,mr4 ,ward1 the teacher of ,chemistry and ,physics4 ,but to return to the ,christmas of #ahfb1 ever memorable in the annals of the ,institute because ,mr4 ,pepper brought out the illusion in quite a different manner from that contemplated by ,mr4 ,dircks1 and so improved and simplified the ghost that it could be shown in any lecture hall or theatre1 if sufficiently large to contain the necessary apparatus4 ,the following is a narrative from the lips of the inventor of the ghost improvement3--8,just before ,christmas ,day in #ahfb1 ,i invited a number of literary and scientific friends1 and my always kind supporters1 the members of the press1 to a private view of the new illusion to be introduced into ,bulwer's romantic and dramatic literary creation1 called #8,a ,strange ,story4' ,the effect of the first appearance of the apparition on my illustrious audience was startling in the extreme1 and far beyond anything ,i could have hoped for and expected1 so much so that1 although ,i had previously settled to explain the whole modus operandi on that evening1 ,i deferred doing so1 and went the next day to ,messrs4 ,carpmael1 the patent agents1 and took out a provisional patent for the ghost illusion1 in the names1 at my request1 of ,dircks and ,pepper4 ,the day after the first evening ,i showed the ghost1 ,mr4 ,dircks came down to the ,polytechnic1 and after saying how much pleased he was with the manner in which ,i had introduced the illusion1 ended by handing me a letter1 in which he spoke highly of my work in respect of the ghost1 and gave me spontaneously whatever profits might accrue from the invention4 ,moreover1 he went to ,carpmael with me1 and1 being an old and experienced patent agent himself1 assisted in drawing up the patent which is here copied1 with my original drawing of the improved method of showing the ghost by the use of a described and ascertained in and by the following statement thereof1 that is to say3-- ,the nature and object of our said ,invention is by a peculiar arrangement of apparatus to associate on the same stage a phantom or phantoms with a living actor or actors1 so that the two may act in concert1 but which is only an optical illusion as respects the one or more phantoms so introduced4 ,the arrangement of the theatre requires in addition to the ordinary stage a second stage at a lower level than the ordinary one1 hidden from the audience as far as direct vision is concerned2 this hidden stage is to be strongly illuminated by artificial light1 and is capable of being rendered dark instantaneously whilst the ordinary stage and the theatre remain illuminated by ordinary lighting4 ,a large glass screen is placed on the ordinary stage and in front of the hidden one4 ,the spectators will not observe the glass screen1 but will see the actors on the ordinary stage through it as if it were not there2 nevertheless the glass will serve to reflect to them an image of the actors on the hidden stage when these are illuminated1 but this image will be made immediately to disappear by darkening the hidden stage4 ,the glass screen is set in a frame so that it can readily be moved to the place required1 and it is to be set at an inclination to enable the spectators1 whether in the pit1 boxes1 or gallery1 to see the reflected image4 ,the glass is adjustable and it is readily adjusted to the proper inclination by having a person in the pit1 and another in the gallery1 to inform the party who is adjusting the glass when they see the image correctly4 ,having thus stated the nature of our ,invention1 we will proceed more fully to describe the manner of performing the same4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,description ,,of ,,the ,,drawings4--,fig4 #a4 7,frontispiece74 ,figure #a of the annexed ,drawings illustrates the arrangement of a theatre for carrying our ,invention into effect2 the ,figure shows a section taken through the stage1 the orchestra1 the pit1 and gallery4 a1 a1 is an opening which is formed in the ordinary stage4 ,in the front part of the stage1 but at a lower level1 is the hidden stage b4 ,the opening a is capable of being closed at the top by trap doors1 a plan of which is shewn at ,figure #b4 ,when the trap doors are closed1 actors on the ordinary or visible stage can pass freely to and fro above the lower or hidden stage4 ,the ordinary stage and trap doors are covered with green baize or other dark material1 so that when the trap doors are opened1 the audience1 even those in the gallery1 will not readily be able to perceive the opening4 ,the actors or objects corresponding with the phantom images1 which it is desired to represent to the audience1 are on the lower or hidden stage b1 and are strongly illuminated by the lime light or the electric light1 or other powerful illuminating means may be employed4 ,this light must accompany the actor in any movement he has to make4 ,the hidden stage b1 and the lanterns c1 may be mounted on a carriage on rails 7a plan of which is shown at ,figure #c71 so that when it is necessary for the phantom actor or object on the lower stage to be moved1 the lanterns may be caused to move also1 or the lanterns may remain stationary whilst the actor moves1 provided the whole space through which he moves is sufficiently illuminated4 ,the lanterns are to be provided with means for instantaneously extinguishing or masking the light1 and for reproducing it so that the phantom may be made to disappear and reappear at pleasure1 whilst the audience and the ordinary stage will be more or less lighted in the ordinary manner according to the effects desired to be obtained4 ,for this purpose a board b is employed1 which is capable of being raised into the position shewn by dotted lines so as entirely to cut off the light from the hidden stage when desired1 or an ordinary opaque shade attached to each lantern may be used for the purpose1 or when using the lime light the desired effects are caused by gradually or instantaneously 7as the case may require7 cutting off the supply of gases1 and the phantom image may by any of these means be caused gradually or instantaneously to fade away4 ,when the trap doors over the hidden stage are open1 the part d thereof assists in hiding the lanterns and the opening from the audience4 ,the part e is raised into the position shown in the ,drawing and acts 7together with the part d7 to screen the lanterns from the audience1 and also to insure that any actor or object on the hidden stage shall not accidentally appear above the level of the visible stage4 ,the phantom actor1 when standing on the stage b1 leans against the screen k1 which is inclined so as to be parallel with the glass screen1 and is covered with black velvet or other dark material1 as is also the stage b1 in order that no image of either the screen k or the stage b may be seen in the reflection4 f 7the glass screen7 is a large sheet of plate glass on the ordinary stage1 of sufficient size to reflect the full length of the actors or objects on the hidden stage to the audience in the pit1 boxes1 and galleries of the theatre4 ,the hidden stage is between the glass and the audience4 ,the glass may be mounted in a swing frame so that it may be adjusted to the angle required1 or it may readily be done by screws or ropes and pulleys1 or otherwise4 ,the glass screen is to be set at such an inclination as to bring the reflected image to the level of the visible or ordinary stage4 ,this will enable the spectators1 whether in pit1 boxes1 or gallery1 to see the reflected image without any obstruction to the view above the foot-lights1 and it will be visible from all parts of the house except those extreme positions which cannot command a view through the glass of that part of the stage where the image is reflected4 ,the proper angle of inclination of the glass is ascertained experimentally by having persons in the different parts of the house to say when the image is shewn to them correctly4 ,the scenery is so disposed as to conceal the frame of the glass1 and we prefer that the glass should be able to descend into an opening or box g beneath the stage1 in which case we counterbalance the glass and frame so that they may easily be raised into the position desired by means of a rope h1 by which1 aided by the bolts i1 the glass is supported in the required position4 ,the glass may either be adjusted when screened from the audience1 and remain in position during the scene1 or 7the proper angle of inclination having been previously ascertained by experiment7 the glass may be raised on to the ordinary or visible stage1 and placed in position whilst the scene is before the eyes of the audience under a subdued light without the movement being observed1 for which latter purpose the top bar of the frame of the glass should be made very light or be omitted altogether4 ,this arrangement admits of an actor on the visible stage passing across the space which the glass is to occupy1 and this he can do just before the appearance of the phantom1 and then immediately the glass is run up1 the trap doors are opened1 the actor or image on the hidden stage is illuminated and the phantom appears4 ,this arrangement will render it less likely that the audience should imagine that there is anything interposed between them and the actors than if the glass plate remained permanently in position during the scene4 ,the hidden or lower stage may be provided with a well or hole up which an actor can rise2 he will then appear as a spectre rising out of the visible stage4 ,the lanterns may be provided with coloured glasses in order to heighten the effect4 ,as the actors on the visible stage do not themselves see the spectral images1 marks should be placed on the stage or other indications made in order that they may know the position which the spectres appearing to the audience are to occupy4 ,in order to appear upright upon the visible stage the actor or object on the hidden stage should be inclined so as to be as nearly as practicable parallel with the surface of the glass screen4 ,in effecting this assistance is afforded by the screen k of the hidden stage4 ,several sheets of glass may be similarly employed at the same time if one is not of sufficient width to cover the different parts of the stage at which it is desired that the spectre should appear1 the interval or junction being concealed by the introduction of a tree or column or some other piece of scenery4 ,having thus described the nature of our ,invention and the manner of performing the same1 we would have it understood that we make no claim to any of the parts separately1 but what we claim is the combined arrangement as herein described of a glass inclined forwards towards the audience1 and two stages1 one the ordinary visible stage1 and the other a hidden stage at a lower level than the ordinary visible stage and illuminated with a much stronger light than either the ordinary visible stage or the body of the house1 and which light is capable of being instantaneously1 or1 if so required1 gradually withdrawn and restored4 ,in witness whereof1 ,i1 the said ,john ,henry ,pepper1 have hereunto set my hand and seal1 this ,thirty-first day of ,october1 in the year of our ,lord ,one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three4 ,j4 ,h4 ,,pepper4 7,l4,s47 ,returning to the author's narrative3--,the ,ghost illusion was first shown in what was called the small theatre of the ,royal ,polytechnic1 but as the audience increased so rapidly it was removed by the following ,easter and shown on a grander scale in the large theatre of the ,institution1 and where the dissolving views were usually exhibited4 ,the late ,mr4 ,o',connor1 of the ,haymarket1 painted the first scene used1 representing the laboratory of 8,the ,haunted ,man10 which ,christmas story the late ,charles ,dickens1 by his special written permission1 allowed me to use for the illustration of the ,ghost illusion4 ,this ghost scene ran for fifteen months1 and helped to realise1 in a very short time1 the sum of twelve thousand pounds1 not counting what ,i received for granting licences to use the ,ghost1 and also the sums realised during many successive years as new ghost stories were brought out4 ,sylvester now patented the use of looking-glass in the performance of the ,ghost1 which ,i thought very good1 and bought of him--he could only infringe my patent by attempting to use it1 and therefore his patent was useless to anybody else but myself4 ,mr4 ,king1 of ,bath1 brought out what he termed a 8,new ,patent ,ghost02 but my solicitors1 ,messrs4 ,hughes1 ,masterman1 and ,hughes1 very soon quashed the alleged patent by appearing against ,mr4 ,king1 when he tried to get his patent passed before the ,solicitor-,general1 the result of which is thus described by ,,the ,london ,new ,music ,hall ,journal4 ,,manchester1 ,,august #aj1 #ahfc4 ,,withdrawal ,,of ,,the ,,ghost ,,from ,,the ,,london ,,new ,,music ,,hall4 ,it is with unfeigned regret that ,i have to announce to my numerous patrons the withdrawal of the ,ghost from the ,london ,new ,music ,hall4 ,the reason is as follows3--,my engagement with ,mr4 ,king1 to whom a large sum of money was paid down1 was with the understanding that he should personally superintend the first representation of the 8,great ,optical ,illusion1 the ,marvellous ,ghost10 which1 however1 he failed to do1 and to which is attributable the failure and disappointment which ensued4 ,i also distinctly understood that his representation was free from any infringement of the right of patent1 and that it was in every respect equal to the original production of ,professor ,pepper4 ,i beg1 therefore1 in order to acquit myself from the odium of disappointment which may have been felt by the unusually large attraction which it has occasioned to 8,the ,london0 during the past week1 to state that ,i have received an intimation from ,professor ,pepper that ,mr4 ,king's representation is an infringement upon his own1 and that ,i have no course left open to me but at once to bear the disappointment1 and allow its immediate withdrawal4 ,it is my intention1 however1 to seek redress in the proper quarter4 ,i therefore trust that my numerous friends will see the predicament in which ,i have been placed1 and readily acquit me of all blame2 assuring them that ,i am at all times1 regardless of expense1 anxious to secure the most sterling talent that can be procured1 and to avoid anything in the shape of disappointment4 ,,james ,,harwood4 ,i now introduced a ,miniature ,ghost of a danseuse1 which1 being only about fifteen inches high1 danced on the stage to the great amusement of my very numerous kind patrons4 ,i took out a provisional patent for this addition to the ,ghost ,mysteries1 and shall reproduce it this ,christmas at the ,polytechnic4 ,a ,manchester man1 under the nom de plume of ,kit ,skewift1 thus ridicules the efforts made by ,king to produce the ,ghost at ,manchester3-- ,,th' ,,ghost666 was made always gave to the person making it full credit for the same4 ,it is certain that ,dircks' apparatus was comparatively useless and that he knew nothing of the use of my double stage1 and in fact the ,solicitor-,general1 ,sir ,roundell ,palmer1 declined to grant a patent on ,dircks' crude idea1 as it was only when he understood the great improvement made by the use of the double stage and the employment of the electric light that he granted 7as stated in the copy of the advertisement7 at the third hearing the ,ghost ,patent which the ,lord ,chancellor subsequently ordered to be sealed after great opposition made by several ,music ,hall proprietors4 ,it is a very curious fact that the original model which ,horne1 ,thornthwaite and ,wood sent me was stolen by some person1 who in my absence gave a fictitious verbal order as if from the firm named1 and ,i never saw it again4 ,the thief could not1 however1 have derived much benefit from the robbery1 as the model was more likely to lead the possessor in the wrong than the right direction4 ,i suppose the model went to ,america or ,australia1 as my imitators in those countries mostly made a terrible fiasco of the ghost when they first attempted to show it4 ,the following notice by a newspaper1 of which unfortunately the name was cut off and lost1 gives a very fair criticism on the ghost and its inventors3-- ,,the ,,patent ,,ghost4 8,modern researches in ,spiritualism have led to one practical result--the discovery of a ghost4 ,not of an ordinary old-fashioned ghost1 appearing in the midnight hour to people with a weak digestion1 haunting graveyards and old country mansions1 and inspiring romance-writers into the mischief of three-volume novels2 but of a well-behaved1 steady1 regular1 and respectable ghost1 going through a prescribed round of duties1 punctual to the minute--a ,patent ,ghost1 in fact4 ,this admirable ghost is the offspring of two fathers1 of a learned member of the ,society of ,civil ,engineers1 ,henry ,dircks1 ,esq41 and of ,professor ,pepper1 of the ,polytechnic4 ,to ,mr4 ,dircks belongs the honour of having invented him1 or1 as the disciples of ,hegel would express it1 evolved him from out of the depths of his own consciousness2 and ,professor ,pepper has the merit of having improved him considerably1 fitting him for the intercourse of mundane society1 and even educating him for the stage4 ,after having bowed to the public at the ,polytechnic ,institution1 he some weeks ago made his dbut upon the boards of the ,britannia ,theatre1 in a new and highly original drama1 entitled1 #8,the ,widow and ,orphans1--,faith1 ,hope1 and ,charity1' in which piece he continues to present himself nightly to crowded audiences with the greatest imaginable success4 8,possibly1 all ,britons do not know where the ,britannia ,theatre is situated1 and it may not be necessary1 therefore1 to state that it has its place in the metropolitan suburb of ,hoxton1 inhabited chiefly by toy-makers and doll-dressers1 and marked under the letter ,n by the ,postmaster-,general4 ,sceptics may smile at the idea of a ,patent ,ghost making his first appearance in a neighbourhood so little fashionable1 and so far removed from the residence of ,master ,home1 commander-in-chief of spirits and mediums1 and solicitor-general of demons1 ghosts1 and shadows of the universe4 ,it is no mere accident2 for it appears that there are good spiritual reasons why the ghost should have come out at ,hoxton and nowhere else4 ,here1 in this toy-making quarter1 there lived1 about a hundred years ago1 a worthy citizen and officer of the ,lord ,mayor1 ,mr4 ,francis ,bancroft1 who was haunted all his life long with the one great idea that his body was predestined to arise visibly from the dead1 and to wander over ,british earth in the shape of a tangible ghost4 ,so deeply impressed was he with this belief that1 while walking in the flesh1 his chief object was to take measures towards insuring his safe and speedy resurrection4 ,with considerable faith in the celebrated maxim of ,luther's active ,roman antagonist1 indulgence-selling ,monk ,tetzel3 #8,sobald das ,geld im ,kasten klingt ,die ,seel' aus dem ,fegfeuer springt' 7,as soon as the money rattles in the boxes1 ,the soul jumps out of purgatory47 citizen ,bancroft took great care1 during his mortal career1 to accumulate a respectable amount of cash with the object of forming a bribe for the guardians of his body4 ,accordingly1 in his will he left the sum of twenty-eight thousand pounds for the establishment of schools and almshouses1 with this proviso1 that his body should be #8preserved within a shew glass' in the church40 ,during the time ,i was in ,paris1 and arranging the ghost for exhibition at the ,thtre du ,chtelet under ,mons4 ,hostein1 ,i was surprised to find that the conjuror1 ,mons4 ,robin1 was showing the ghost at his sances4 ,my lawyers interviewed him1 and discovered that1 some years before1 a little toy had been brought out and patented in ,france by which a miniature ghost could be shown4 ,it consisted of a box with a small sheet of glass1 placed at an angle of forty-five degrees1 and it reflected a concealed table1 with plastic figures1 the spectre of which appeared behind the glass1 and which young people who possessed the toy invited their companions to take out of the box1 when it melted away1 as it were1 in their hands and disappeared4 ,in ,france at that time all improvements on a patent fell to the original patentee1 and under that law ,i lost the patent in ,france2 but ,mons4 ,hostein honourably paid me a large sum of money for the use of my improved ghost at the ,thtre du ,chtelet1 ,paris4 ,query4--,had ,mr4 ,dircks' patent agent1 in his searches after patents1 ever come across the toy invented in ,paris8 ,because it is substantially the ghost apparatus and produced that illusion2 and thus it shows how correct are the words of ,solomon1 who has told us 8,there is nothing new under the sun40 ,if the reader will consult a book written by me1 entitled 8,cyclopdic ,science ,simplified10 formerly published by ,messrs4 ,frederick ,warne and ,co41 but now bought and published by ,messrs4 ,lippincott1 the great ,american publishers of ,philadelphia1 ,pa41 ,u4,s4,a41 he will find a very near approach to the ghost apparatus copied from ,robinson's 8,recreative ,memories0 published in #ahca4 ,the same author describes how the famous magician 7so-called7 ,nostrodamus deceived even the astute and wily ,marie de' ,medicis by a vision which appeared in a looking-glass4 ,moreover1 ,sir ,walter ,scott1 in his beautiful poem1 8,the ,lay of the ,last ,minstrel10 has introduced the use of mirrors for producing ghostly appearances1 in the vision seen by the ill-fated ,earl of ,surrey1 in the mirror huge and high of ,cornelius2 the vision being 8,that fair and lovely form1 the ,lady ,geraldine0 7verses #af1 #ag1 #ah1 #ai1 #bj1 canto vi474 ,before travelling about so much ,i had a trunk full of letters referring to the ghost illusion1 many treating it as a supernatural phenomenon1 and not an effect from natural causes4 ,in about four months my secretary wrote at least #a1jjj letters in answer to those addressed to me4 ,i was offered house property in exchange for the right to exhibit the ghost and a full description of the apparatus on attendance at the ,polytechnic to see how things were manipulated4 ,i publish one of the most amusing letters1 which has no address or proper signature1 but only the initials 8,r4 ,c403-- 8,whereas the directors and managers of the ,polytechnic ,institution believe and maintain the phenomenon called #8spirit-rapping' to be produced by trickery1 jugglery1 or some natural agency1 and to be an imposture1 ,i1 the undersigned1 on the contrary maintain that there is some non-human agent which moves the tables1 chairs1 etc41 and carries on an intelligent conversation with spectators by knocking1 or tilting1 or other signs4 ,i am ready to wager from #e to #ej with any one who chooses to accept my challenge that the phenomenon shall take place1 and that no one present shall be able to detect any sort of trickery or jugglery in the matter4 ,it is to be clearly understood that mere opinions that the thing is done by natural agency are to go for nothing4 ,the natural agency must be proved4 ,on the other hand ,i defy any one to produce the same phenomenon by natural agency without my being able to detect that agency4 ,in making this proposal ,i wish it to be distinctly understood that ,i do not place any trust or confidence in the so-called #8spirits1' as ,i maintain1 in opposition to the whole body of so-called #8spiritualists1' that the intelligent agent which moves the tables1 chairs1 etc41 and converses and answers questions by knocking1 is nothing more or less than the evil spirit which dwells in humanity1 and is found in every human being4 ,this proposition can be clearly demonstrated4 ,as to the so-called #8spirits' being the #8souls of the dead1' the idea is absurd1 and this absurdity also can be made abundantly manifest4 ,this spiritualism is doing an immensity of mischief1 and ought to be exposed1 but it will never be exposed if people shut their eyes to the fact4 ,it will not be the less a fact1 and will not the less impose on all who witness it1 because there are men and women who predetermine in their own minds that it cannot be true1 and refuse to be convinced by either their senses or their understandings4 ,in all ages there have been deaf adders whom no music could charm1 and there are in these days also many #8who having eyes will not see1 and who having ears will not hear4' ,on what grounds does any one assume as a certainty that such a thing is impossible8 8,,richard ,,cruin40 8,if any one is so unwise as to be willing to pay #ajj in the event of the phenomenon taking place in his presence1 and of his being unable to detect any imposture1 ,i undertake that the #8medium' shall exhibit in any private room1 in any home1 and with any furniture 7provided it be not too heavy71 and that the said medium shall submit to be searched both before and after the exhibition4 8,nothing is easier than to lift a table by means of a concealed apparatus4 ,the knocking also may be produced by means of muscular motion or otherwise4 ,but can any one lift a table without any apparatus1 simply by placing the hand on it2 or can any one contrive an apparatus so cunning that no one present1 having full liberty to examine everything1 shall be able to detect it8 8,by collusion or otherwise questions also might be answered1 but ,i maintain that the agent in spiritualism can tell all the most secret and hidden things of one's life1 and even one's secret thoughts1 and also that it understands and can converse in any language4 ,i have verified this by repeated experience4 ,but it will not always speak when it is wanted to speak1 and the #8medium' has no power over it to make it answer questions4 ,but the fact that it often tells lies and often refuses to tell anything1 does not make void the fact that it does also at times answer every question which one can ask it4 ,it is by this sort of capricious behaviour that it succeeds in completely deluding some to trust in it1 and others to disbelieve in it altogether4 ,but let a man confine himself at first to the physical phenomenon and try if he can make a table to rise up into the air completely off the ground1 simply by placing his hand on it1 and without any apparatus whatever4 ,if he cannot do this1 and if no human being can do it1 let it be acknowledged that there is some non-human agent4 ,a little experience will very soon convince any one that it is an intelligent1 and a wonderfully intelligent1 agent1 and then it will remain to be considered whether this intelligent agent is good or evil--,i say it is evil4 ,r4 ,c40 ,during the year #ahfc1 when the ghost illusion was one of the topics of the day1 the famous ,george ,cruikshank wrote a pamphlet1 entitled--8,a ,discovery concerning ,ghosts1 with a ,rap at the #8,spirit ,rappers1' illustrated with ,cuts1 and dedicated to the #8,ghost ,club4'0 ,curious to say1 he says nothing respecting the ,polytechnic ghost1 but is exercised chiefly with famous stories of ghosts and apparitions1 which it is alleged have appeared to various persons4 ,the author examines analytically a number of them1 and comes to the conclusion that the persons relating them usually deceived themselves or other people1 and that most of the stories are mental hallucinations4 ,the inimitable ,george1 as his friends delighted to call him1 treats with profound contempt the spirit rappers1 and all the cheats and fortune-telling mendicants who try to impose on innocent people with their bad conjuring tricks--people who might have got through the world safely2 but the fatal chord is struck1 and they go from bad to worse1 until they end in a mad house4 ,the whole tribe of persons who made money directly or indirectly out of what they called spirit mediums1 c41 fairly howled upon me in the lecture room1 and1 threatening personal violence1 ,i was for some time attended home at night by the most stalwart of our ,polytechnic employs2 for1 like ,cruikshank1 ,i vigorously denounced the traders in spirits1 founding my arguments on the belief that ,god was too merciful to us to add to the troubles of this world the fear and trembling brought about by pretended communication with the invisible world4 ,the first story ,i told at my ,polytechnic 8,strange ,lecture0 had a very simple plot4 ,it represented the room of a student who was engaged burning the midnight oil1 and1 looking up from his work1 sees an apparition of a skeleton4 ,resenting the intrusion he rises1 seizes a sword or a hatchet which is ready to his hand1 and aims a blow at the ghost2 which instantly disappeared again and again to return4 ,this ghost was admirably performed by my assistant1 whom we called ,ye ,perringe1 who1 wearing a cover of black velvet1 held the real skeleton in his arms and made the fleshless bones assume the most elegant attitudes1 the lower part from the pelvis downward being attired in white linen1 and the white skeleton ghost assuming a sitting posture1 so that it appeared to come out of the floor4 ,although this exhibition only lasted a few minutes1 it drew hundreds and thousands of pounds to the treasury of the ,polytechnic4 ,in fact1 as already stated1 ,i was obliged to remove to the larger theatre of the ,institute4 ,the next ghost story was told in the large theatre2 and it illustrated ,charles ,dickens's story of the 8,haunted ,man40 ,at the same time was shown 8,cupid and the ,love-,letter40 ,when the curtain drew up1 a peasant girl was discovered using her spinning-wheel and demurely thinking of something not told to the audience4 ,the ghost of a very pretty little boy dressed as ,cupid now appears at her elbow1 and discharges an arrow from his bow1 which pierces the heart of the susceptible village girl4 ,she attempts to caress the pretty ,cupid1 who eludes her kind advances1 and is now discovered on the other side4 ,the maiden turns to kiss him1 but he is gone4 ,at last1 relenting1 ,cupid gives her a love-letter from some affectionate swain1 which she takes and shows triumphantly to the audience1 and leaving the girl to read it1 the curtain again descended4 ,these two illustrations of the ghost illusion ran for fifteen months without alteration1 and were succeeded by many others--viz41 ,scrooge and ,marley's ,ghost1 by ,charles ,dickens2 the ,ghost of the diving bell2 the knight watching his armour2 the poor author tested2 the ,ghost of ,napoleon ,i4 at ,st4 ,helena2 and the ,ghost in ,hamlet1 pronounced by a leading ,r4,a4 as being nearly perfect1 only wanting a little different colour in the walls of the ramparts1 which ,i adopted with his ultimate satisfaction and approval4 ,the late ,walter ,montgomery took a great interest in the ghost proceedings1 and assisted me greatly in arranging the scenes with due regard to the dramatic art4 ,there is a mystery about his tragic end which deserves solution1 and his brother-in-law told me at ,brisbane1 ,queensland1 that he did not commit suicide1 but was shot by somebody else4 ,the sands of the year #ahfc had been nearly run out1 and ,i had taken the ghost to ,manchester to a lecture hall then under the skilful management of ,mr4 ,peacock1 when another great success was scored--various ,london theatres took out licences to use the ghost2 notably the ,haymarket1 under ,mr4 ,benjamin ,webster2 ,the ,britannia1 under ,mr4 and ,mrs4 ,lane2 ,drury ,lane1 under ,mr4 ,chatterton1 also subsequently and after the famous ghost trial before the ,lord ,chancellor4 ,the ,music ,halls no longer tried to infringe the patent1 but those who required it paid their fees for licences to do so4 ,the famous ghost trial came on in ,september at the private residence of the ,lord ,chancellor ,westbury1 who very graciously agreed to hear this patent case at once1 because his lordship was informed by my solicitor1 ,mr4 ,walter ,hughes1 junr41 that if he could not do so the ,polytechnic ,ghost would most likely be swamped by the multiplicity of imitators1 good1 bad1 or indifferent4 ,accordingly1 one cold and chilly day ,i went down into ,hampshire1 accompanied only by my solicitor1 ,mr4 ,walter ,hughes1 junior1 of the firm of ,hughes1 ,masterman1 and ,hughes1 #ef1 ,new ,broad ,street4 ,on arrival we were shown into his ,lordship's drawing-room1 where1 to my dismay1 ,i found a little army of solicitors and barristers drawn up as if in battle array1 and sitting in a row against the right-hand wall of the room4 ,his ,lordship's secretary courteously came forward1 and1 noticing we were somewhat cold1 placed chairs for us near the fire1 and pulled up a table for our use on which to take notes4 ,we all rose respectfully when the ,lord ,chancellor entered1 and1 being requested by him to remain seated1 the case was opened by his ,lordship asking who appeared for the ,plaintiffs1 the music hall proprietors4 ,at least four answered1 8,i do1 my ,lord10 and we in the minority could only give an answer from one voice--viz41 that of my then young solicitor4 ,the music hall people came down with two newspaper reporters to record their certain victory over me1 but which1 as it turned out1 was a mistake1 because the reporters could only tell the truth and record the verdict given in my favour4 ,the ,lord ,chancellor1 so far as ,i can remember 7and ,i have no notes71 then addressed the ,plaintiffs-- #ast4 ,i shall require you to show cause by what right or authority you appear before me this day4 #bnd4 ,i will hear you on the general merits of the case4 #crd4 ,and lastly1 on the novelty which the ,defendant seeks to have completed under the protection of a ,patent1 and which novelty you appear to deny4 ,one of the barristers then rose1 and after saying that he would bow with submission to anything his ,lordship might suggest or rule1 commenced his argument by calling attention to the fact that the number of days allowed by the ,patent ,law had already elapsed1 and by sections so-and-so ,i had lost the opportunity of getting the ,patent sealed within the proper time allowed between granting ,provisional ,protection and sealing the ,patent4 ,after he had ended1 the ,lord ,chancellor asked if the ,plaintiffs through their counsel had anything more to urge on this first point4 ,they all bowed1 and said 8,no40 ,his ,lordship now said3 8,it is very true what you state respecting the wording of the ,patent ,act1 but if you will turn to sections so-and-so you will find that the ,law ,officers of the ,crown have full power to grant an extension of the time for completing and sealing the ,patent on the proper application of the ,defendant's solicitors1 and as that application has already been made and granted1 it must be evident that1 though the ,defendant exceeded the time usually allowed1 he had full permission to do so from the constituted authorities4 ,i will now hear you on the general merits of the case40 99 99 99 99 99 ,here the learned counsel exhausted his law and rhetoric in making out there was really nothing to patent1 for who could catch hold of a ghost8 ,and more legal technicalities were advanced and argued than ,i can remember at this distance of time--viz41 twenty-six years ago4 ,however1 his ,lordship again asked1 8,have you anything more to urge on this point80 and received the same reply1 8,no1 my ,lord1 we have not40 ,the ,chancellor then replied in extenso1 exposed all the sophistries of the arguments1 and whilst complimenting the counsel on his learning and the care which he had bestowed upon the case1 said again that there was nothing in the arguments that militated against the sealing of the ,patent4 ,of course1 they could take action at common law1 and try the case before the judges appointed to try such cases if they thought proper1 and1 supported by affidavits resulting from a trial at common law1 could bring the case again before him4 ,there was one point which the ,lord ,chancellor alluded to4 ,he said3 8,great stress had been laid on the impossibility of patenting a mere intangible nothing1 viz41 a ghost2 but as he understood1 the ,defendant did not patent the shadowy result called the ,ghost1 but an apparatus for #8,exhibiting ,dramatic and other ,performances1' and without this apparatus no ghost could be rendered visible to an audience40 ,his lordship then continued3 8,i will now hear you on the novelty of the proposed invention1 which your affidavits declare is not new1 but an imitation of something already exhibited40 ,the learned counsel now made various statements1 supported apparently by affidavits from persons who alleged that they had seen the ghost a long time before1 and1 in fact1 had used the very same apparatus ,i had employed or words to that effect4 ,for instance1 an old playbill emanating from the ,old ,tivoli ,gardens1 ,margate--not perhaps the most refined place of entertainment1 in fact1 no ladies appeared to visit the place say1 in #ahea1 when ,i heard a lady in tights discourse a song the burthen of which was-- 8,take care1 ,john ,bull1 or else you'll be done ,in the ,great ,exhibition of '#ea40 ,the playbill was laid upon his ,lordship's table1 who1 taking hold of it1 asked1 8,is this the playbill alluded to80 and threw it on the floor4 ,i suppose the counsel was not attending to some point of etiquette1 and ought to have produced his playbill in the form of a ,high ,chancery ,court affidavit4 ,the playbill alluded to a ghost that was to be shown1 and counsel again called attention to their plan of the ghost apparatus1 which he was instructed to say was the same or very similar to that used by ,defendant4 ,the affidavit of some other dramatic professional was also brought forward with several others2 but all things come to an end1 and at last the same distinct question rang out3 8,have you anything more to urge on this question of novelty80 with the answer as before4 8,no1 your ,lordship40 ,lord ,westbury commenced by alluding to the drawing brought forward by the ,plaintiffs1 and said1 8,i have examined the affidavit and the drawings1 and find it is as nearly as possible a copy of the ,defendant's own drawing deposited in confidence in the archives of the ,patent ,office1 and when ,i visit that establishment will take care to enquire who has presumed to allow the ,plaintiffs permission to copy the ,defendant's original drawing of the apparatus used to show the ghost4 ,i well remember10 continued his ,lordship1 8being taken to the house of ,belzoni1 the distinguished traveller1 and seeing an effect no doubt somewhat similar to that produced by the ,defendant's apparatus1 but ,i could not for one moment compare the toy of ,belzoni with the refined and complete contrivances used by the ,defendant at the ,royal ,polytechnic4 ,an affidavit has been put in by the ,plaintiffs1 sworn to by a person calling himself a #8nigger minstrel4' ,he is elsewhere denominated an #8,ethiopian ,serenader1' who had seen the ,defendant's ghost shown years ago--a very respectable man1 no doubt1 in his vocation2 but to put the evidence of such a person against the affidavits of ,michael ,faraday1 ,sir ,david ,brewster1 and ,professor ,wheatstone1 is a manifest absurdity4 ,i1 therefore1 rule that the ,great ,seal of ,england be at once attached to the ,defendant's patent1 and that the ,plaintiffs do pay the costs40 ,after certifying for the costs and having a little conversation with my solicitor and self1 his ,lordship withdrew1 and we all went back to town4 ,the reader can imagine my feelings of joy at the successful upshot of this trial when he learns that ,i had already received large sums for licences which ,i must have refunded if the case had gone against me4 ,for many years the ghost at the ,polytechnic pursued its successful career1 and earned #ab1jjj in a comparatively short space of time4 ,i received an illuminated address of thanks1 with a handsome honorarium1 from the directors1 and subsequently they presented my bust in marble to my late dear wife1 with a letter from the ,rev4 ,j4 ,b4 ,owen1 ,m4,a41 the highly-gifted chairman of the old ,royal ,polytechnic4 ,very few persons could understand how the ghost was produced1 although many persons wrote about and explained it2 even the distinguished philosopher1 ,michael ,faraday1 when ,i took him behind the scenes1 said1 with his usual love of truth3 8,do you know1 ,mr4 ,pepper1 ,i really don't understand it40 ,i then took his hand1 and put it on one of the huge glass plates1 when he said1 8,ah6 now ,i comprehend it2 but your glasses are kept so well protected ,i could not see them even behind your scenes40 ,,metempsychosis4 ,since the ghost was produced at the ,polytechnic years ago1 the author has visited ,america1 and seen not only the chief cities of the ,united ,states of ,america1 but also those of patriotic ,canada2 and about ten years ago1 paying a casual visit to ,messrs4 ,walker1 the eminent organ builders1 he enquired of ,mr4 ,james ,walker what he had done with a model shown him during the height of the popularity of the ghost1 by which an empty glass goblet1 or one full of water1 was gradually filled with1 or changed into1 wine 7or coloured water resembling it71 thus unwittingly and apparently embodying or putting into an illustrated form the miracle of the conversion of water into wine4 ,i was too busy and too well paid at the time to think of a new illusion1 but ,i praised it much1 and said if not confined to too small stage limits1 it was certainly as good1 if not better1 than the ghost illusion4 ,the time had now arrived when the ,london world was ready for something new 7as commercial men would say7 in the ghost line1 and although ,mr4 ,james ,walker1 with the modesty of a truly scientific man1 disclaimed the merit due to his invention1 he did at last1 at my request1 throw himself1 with the author1 heart and soul into the production of the new illusion1 which we called ,metempsychosis4 ,we now took out a patent for the new optical wonder1 and having thus secured the invention from that piracy and robbery which too often dog the otherwise successful steps of inventors1 causing nearly every patent to be called by the legal fraternity a damnosa hereditas1 we looked about for a good place--hall or theatre--where the illusion could be started4 ,none better could be thought of than the old ,royal ,polytechnic1 where we offered at a moderate sum per week to produce it1 paying for every stick1 decoration1 or engraved looking-glass ourselves4 ,but it appeared that the funds of the institution were so reduced--it was supposed1 by the immense expenditure on armies1 warlike material1 and ladies' legs required to produce a work emulating friend ,barnum's gigantic 8,nero10 and called1 with an alarming stretch of imagination1 the 8,siege of ,troy10 or 8,destruction of ,troy0--that the directors were unable to guarantee the weekly salary ,mr4 ,james ,walker and myself demanded4 ,luckily for us1 a percentage on the gross receipts was suggested1 and brought in a great deal more money to our exchequer than the modest weekly salary would have given us4 ,the public came in goodly numbers to see the new optical wonder1 and all went well as long as the author remained in ,london and could devote his time and energies to the daily exhibition2 but the time was now drawing rapidly near when1 according to contract1 he must leave for ,australia4 ,professor ,pepper has invariably told his numerous patrons that1 although obliged to keep secret for a reasonable time all optical illusions that he produced1 he would ultimately tell the public all about it4 ,the metempsychosic era at the ,polytechnic in #ahgi was marked by the production of various stories1 which were nicely edited and corrected by a lady of well-balanced1 tasteful1 and poetic mind--viz41 by ,miss ,walker1 the sister of the author's very able coadjutor4 ,the entertainment opened with a vacant stage1 disclosing a sort of inner apartment about twelve feet square1 tastefully upholstered1 and closed by a curtain which could be lowered at pleasure1 without interfering with the great roller and white curtain upon which ,dissolving ,views were shown4 ,the author's adopted son1 for he never had any children of his own1 was now seen walking through the inner apartment to the foot-lights1 where he bowed and1 addressing the audience1 had hardly got as far as the words1 8,ladies and ,gentlemen1--,i am sorry to inform you that something has detained ,professor ,pepper--0 when my voice was heard crying out3 8,stop1 stop2 ,i am here60 and1 appearing out of nothing and without the aid of trap doors or descent by the help of the copper wires1 the author stood in the midst1 and bowed his acknowledgments for the hearty greeting kindly given him by his audience4 ,the entertainment now proceeded1 and1 after apologising for the gloom he was about to cast upon the meeting by the harassing story he was about to relate1 finally stated that his subject would be those 8fearful bags of mystery0 called 8sausages10 remarking incidentally that though1 thanks to ,government analysts1 many persons had heard of the examination and analyses of this dietetic refresher of the inner man1 no one probably had ever seen sausages put together again1 as it were1 and formed into the very animal from which they were originally educed4 ,a large white dish of sausages was now produced4 ,they were placed in a wire basket1 such as pot-plants are suspended in from windows and verandahs1 and hung up in the inner chamber4 ,about one minute elapsed2 the sausages were gone1 and out of the basket came the author's dear little sagacious white poodle1 with his blue ribbon and little bells1 wagging his tail1 barking at the audience1 and coming down to lick the hand of his master4 ,the poor little creature was accidentally poisoned by eating bits of meat the rats had dropped whilst scuttling to their holes to die of the too rapid poison prepared by the author for those pests of domesticated people4 ,then the metamorphoses proceeded4 ,oranges were changed into pots of marmalade1 and given away to the boys1 and a chest of tea was converted into a tray carrying a steaming teapot1 sugar1 milk1 cups of tea1 and handed by the attendants to the ladies in the reserved seats only--such is the blighting influence of cash1 which caused the one-shilling people to be neglected and the eighteenpenny-reserved-seat folks to have their teas4 ,the ghost of ,banquo in 8,macbeth10 and the ditto in 8,hamlet0 followed1 with the curious change of a deserted piano into one at which played and sang a living member of the fair sex1 attended by a gentleman in faultless black coat and white tie1 who turned over her music2 and this ,part4 ,i wound up with the change of a gentleman into a lady1 who walked down to the foot-lights1 sang a song1 and then vanished into 8thin air40 ,but all these changes could only happen in the smaller inner apartment1 the actors might walk anywhere else at pleasure1 and out of the charmed circle ,walker could not change to ,pepper1 or the latter refer to the living beings when they faded out of sight as regular 8,walkers40 ,so much for what was done1 and now the anxious reader is getting impatient1 and if a lady is doubtless curious 7the poor men never are so7 to know how it was all done1 and as the illusion has apparently left the domain of optical science and is now relegated to the conjuring profession1 the author has no hesitation in fulfilling his long-ago promise made to the public to let1 as ,mr4 ,cremer1 jun41 says in his most amusing book on 8,conjuring10 the cat out of the bag4 ,before the illusion can please the eyes1 the proper apparatus for producing it must be constructed2 and the key to the result consists in the use1 not of clear plate glass employed in the ghost illusion1 but of engraved silvered glass4 ,ordinary looking-glass1 such as is used for common mirrors or looking-glasses1 is usually made by attaching an amalgam of tin-foil and quicksilver to one side of a clean sheet of plate or other glass4 ,glass prepared in this way cannot be successfully engraved1 and when the chisel or other tool is drawn with pressure across it1 is liable to chip2 and instead of clear1 sharp engraved lines being obtained1 they are ragged1 and1 in most cases1 large patches of the amalgam are torn off4 ,this is not the case when glass really silvered by successful chemical processes is used1 and when pure metallic silver is precipitated on to the surface of the best and flattest plate glass4 ,when ,mr4 ,walker and myself commenced our experiments in ,march1 #ahgi1 the so-called 8,patent ,silvered ,glass0 was expensive and confined to moderate-sized pieces of plate glass4 ,our first care1 therefore1 was to construct a table that could be brought by screws to a perfect level1 and one that would carry a plate of glass at least twelve feet six long by six feet eight wide4 ,such a plate being most carefully cleaned1 and quite free from grease1 was placed upon the table1 and levelled by means of spirit levels1 just as a plate of glass used for the old collodion process would be levelled1 in order that the fluid should not run off at one edge1 leaving the other comparatively dry2 and now came the knotty point--,which was the best silvering process to use8 ,on consulting the best records of this art1 we found valuable information in the ,english ,mechanic1 ,vol4 xxi41 ,no4 #edb4 ,the reader will find the following process very successful if minutely carried out in all its technical details-- ,,to ,,silver ,,glass4 ,prepare two solutions4 #a4 ,argentic nitrate is dissolved in distilled water1 and ammonia added to the solution till the precipitate first thrown down is almost entirely re-dissolved4 ,the solution is filtered and diluted1 so that #ajj cc4 contain one gramme of argentic nitrate4 ,n4,b4--#ajj cc4 are equal to rather more than #c fluid ounces4 #b4 ,two grammes of argentic nitrate are dissolved in a little distilled water1 and poured into a litre of boiling distilled water4 #aff gramme of ,rochelle salt is added1 and the mixture boiled for a short time1 till the precipitate contained in it becomes grey2 it is then filtered hot4 ,the glass1 having been thoroughly cleaned with 7#a7 nitric acid1 7#b7 water1 7#c7 caustic potash1 7#d7 water1 7#e7 alcohol1 and lastly distilled water1 is to be placed in a clean glass or porcelain vessel1 the side to be silvered being placed uppermost4 ,equal quantities of the two solutions are then to be mixed and poured in1 so as to cover the glass4 ,this should be done while the glass is still wet with distilled water4 ,in about an hour the silvering will be completed4 ,then pour off the exhausted liquid1 carefully remove glass1 wash in clean water1 rub off silver where deposited where not required1 allow to dry1 and varnish silvered side with any thin varnish which does not contract much in drying4 ,the time required for the operation depends on temperature4 ,if the solutions be warmed to about #cj;,c41 the silver is deposited in a few minutes2 but it is safer to use them cold4 ,the inside of test tubes1 bulbs1 c41 are silvered by putting the solutions into them1 no second vessel being then required4 ,throughout the whole operation the most scrupulous cleanliness is the grand essential4 #ajj cc4 are equal to rather more than #c fluid ounces4 #a gramme #aedcb grains4 #a litre #ce fluid ounces4 ,the plate of glass being thus carefully silvered is allowed to dry thoroughly1 and is finally varnished with a good thick varnish1 containing plenty of red lead1 so that the back surface of the silver mirror has a smooth and red appearance1 while the varnish protects the delicate film of metallic silver4 ,an ordinary photographic picture on glass is really represented by precipitated metallic silver1 but the metal in this case is in minute particles1 which do not shine or reflect light4 ,the silvered plate glass is now engraved in the following simple manner4 ,being placed in a support or rack against the wall1 and quite upright1 a chisel--or rather1 a series of chisels--are drawn across the surface in straight lines1 and perpendicular1 by the use of a large ,t-square4 ,every time the chisel is drawn with pressure across the varnished back of the glass a portion of the silver is removed1 leaving a straight line quite clear or transparent1 and1 in fact1 laying bare the surface of the plate glass4 ,the lines were ruled in three degrees of comparison3 thick1 thicker1 thickest2 and considerable skill and experience--which no description can teach--were required to get these correctly engraved4 ,illustration3 ,a ,b ,c ,d1 the ,plate ,glass2 e straight lines engraved on silvered side and gradually increasing in thickness from e to f4 ,the engraved silver glass plate moved through a groove in the woodwork at the top of the chamber1 and was supported below on a beautiful carriage1 the wheels of which were covered with vulcanised indiarubber rings1 and moved on a tramway below the floor of the room1 perpendicularly4 ,the glass could be made to slide at an angle of forty-five degrees1 and as it always made a rumbling noise while moving1 the music of the band concealed that defect4 ,the ground plan of the apartment is shown on the opposite page4 ,some idea of the cost of making a full-sized apparatus1 with hangings and curtains and engraved glass1 may be gathered from the fact that the author's outfit for ,australia with a certain number of dresses cost #cbg #abs4 #a;d4 ,whilst the author was travelling through ,australia ,mr4 ,james ,walker1 with his great inventive genius1 made a further improvement1 by which the concealed figure at ,k was done away with1 and the whole apartment thrown open to the public gaze4 ,this was done to illustrate a clever sketch written by ,mr4 ,burnand called 8,curried ,prawns40 ,illustration3 ,ground plan of chamber4 ,a ,a,a,a1 floor of the apartment2 ,b ,b1 groove at an angle of #de1 in which the glass moved2 ,a to ,c groove continued outside of the apartment used when the glass was moved away2 ,e ,f ,g ,h1 short flight of three or four steps1 as the room must stand some distance from the floor to allow of carriage moving on tramway4 ,n4,b4--,the groove ,a to ,c was concealed from the audience by handsome curtains1 which were repeated at the same angle on the other side1 from ,m to ,d4 ,k4--,place where the objects to be reflected in the looking-glass were placed1 but quite concealed from the audience with a door1 closed when the exhibition was going on4 ,illustration ,a ,c ,d ,e are the outside of the room1 #ab feet square1 engraved glass running from ,h ,a to ,a ,d4 ,the wing ,e ,g is placed square2 this is an immense advantage1 as it renders unnecessary any counterpart at ,c ,n1 and as1 of course1 it cannot be seen1 the light from the foot-lights on ,e ,g is not seen by reflection at ,c ,n4 ,when the wing ,e ,g was at the same angle as ,h ,a1 this was always a weak point in the illusion1 as when the glass crossed1 the reflection of ,e ,g1 unless very dimly illuminated1 always shewed4 ,now it does not matter when ,e ,g is placed as in drawing4 ,the frontage to the audience1 instead of being from ,a ,f1 is now extended to ,e--i4e4 #ab feet--consequently the return sides ,f ,e and ,c ,b can be removed4 ,this plan1 of course1 precludes the use of 8trick0 chairs1 baskets1 c4 c42 but it has a good many other advantages in its favour1 for with a 8sociable0 in the middle of the room made in two exact halves1 these halves trick or cover one another when the glass is pushed across1 and of course this movement is not seen by the audience2 then any person or persons can be made to appear gradually1 sitting or standing1 at ,l or ,m1 right in the middle of the wide open room4 ,mr4 ,walker tried this effect at the ,polytechnic ,institution1 and it was capital--the ensemble is more imposing4 ,this plan of shewing the illusion is the plan for the stage1 as the necessity for darkening the stage in front is nearly wholly avoided4 ,the back of the side-wing ,i ,k can be painted black1 so that its reflection shall not be seen4 ,in lieu of the gas-jets1 as now arranged1 there is a gas-lamp2 this is placed on a pedestal or small table4 ,the shadow of the 8sociable0 to a great extent covers or hides the path along which the glass travels4 ,mr4 ,walker says3 8,i thought out this way for ,mr4 ,irving's necessities1 but ,i did not hear anything from him2 and it has come in well for ,mr4 ,burnand's sketch1 which has been produced40 ,in this sketch1 a gentleman afflicted with dyspepsia through eating 8curried prawns0 7the name of the piece71 calling on some friends1 where he has promised to help them in some amateur theatricals1 looks at the different costumes of ,mephistopheles1 ,faust and ,marguerite1 and throws them carelessly on the seat at ,m1 walks down the steps 7which we shall double in width7 the glass now crosses1 and1 whilst in a fit of melancholy1 he wonders if ,mephistopheles will appear4 ,sure enough1 he does4 ,mephistopheles then comes down in front1 and with incantations makes1 successively or together2 ,faust and ,marguerite appear2 they then disappear in the same manner4 ,the author's friends and the public all know how steadily he has opposed the so-called ,spiritual deceptions1 which generally are not a half nor a quarter as clever as the tricks of a first-rate conjuror4 ,punch instructs us what to do at a ,spiritual sance1 which1 if done1 would certainly astonish the person performing the part of the materialised spirit4 ,punch writes--8,how to behave at a ,spiritual sance4--,always try to hit the happy ,medium40 ,the author thought the time had now arrived when a new generation who knew not the ghost might be interested in its revival1 and with that idea the authorities at the present ,polytechnic concurred1 so that by the time these pages are read it is hoped the ghost will be in full career once more1 and if the author only receives a tenth part of the great patronage he received in #ahfc he will be amply repaid for all his exertions in reproducing the ghost illusion4 ,and he desires thankfully to acknowledge the very kind help he has received from ,robert ,mitchell1 ,esq41 the ,secretary and ,manager of the numerous classes and useful lectures now so well conducted at ,mr4 ,quintin ,hogg's ,polytechnic4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the author hopes to show 8something new0 at the ,polytechnic2 and a lady in miniature1 as it were from ,liliput1 dances on a silver waiter held out by the author2 and the great man ,napoleon ,i41 for whom1 like ,alexander the ,great1 the world was too small1 stands in the palm of the hand of the author4 ,if 8duffers10 c41 did not exist1 the illusion would be explained to the public2 but ten years need not elapse before
