,,published ,,by ,,the ,,biological ,,club ,,of ,,the ,,ohio ,,state ,,university ,vol4 ,i4 ,,may1 #aija ,no4 #g ,,variation ,,in ,,syndesmon ,,thalictroides4 ,w4 ,a4 ,,kellerman4 ,this charming spring flower called in popular language ,rue-,anemone1 indigenous to eastern ,north ,america1 has been known from early times1 and as in many other equally unfortunate cases has had imposed upon it by botanists a superfluity of scientific names4 ,linnaeus in his ,species ,plantarum1 #agec1 listed it as ,anemone thalictroides2 in #ahjc ,michaux called it ,thalictrum anemonoides2 it was rechristened as ,syndesmon thalictroides in #ahcb by ,hoffmansegg2 finally ,spach in #ahci proposed the name ,anemonella thalictroides4 ,botanists to-day consider our plant as more properly placed in ,hoffmansegg's genus ,syndesmon1 and for it the earliest specific name1 applied by ,linnaeus1 is very properly retained2 hence the correct designation in botanical language is ,syndesmon thalictroides 7,l47 ,hoffmg4 ,the extent of variation in this plant has been but partially noted heretofore4 ,the tabulation given below indicates the results of observations made the latter part of ,april and the first of ,may this year in regard to the number of flowers and the variation in the involucral leaves4 ,as to whether these are sessile as given in our ,manuals1 notes have appeared on previous pages of this ,journal by ,messrs4 ,burglehaus1 ,wetzstein and ,schaffner1 cf4 pp4 #gb1 #ajd and #ajf4 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #a4 ,diagrams showing arrangement of leaves and flowers4 ,the number of flowers is normally three and the involucral leaves two4 ,a diagram showing their arrangement is given at ,a1 ,fig4 #a4 ,the two leaves are not always ternate2 they may both be simple1 diagrammatically shown at ,b4 ,a further variation1 shown in ,fig4 #a ,c presents one simple and one compound leaf4 ,at ,d greater complexity is indicated1 there being in many plants besides the central flower three instead of only two axillary ones1 and only one of the subtending leaves is compound4 ,in the case shown at ,e two of the three involucral leaves are compound4 ,as shown in ,f and ,g four leaves may contribute to form the involucre and each one subtend a flower2 in some cases two of the leaves are compound1 in others three or even all may be compound4 ,still other variations along this line occur1 but space forbids a fuller enumeration4 ,it should be stated that although the pedicels and leaves as shown in the diagrams 7,fig4 #a7 occupy but a small portion of the circle1 as a matter of fact the leaflets are spread and so disposed as to occupy the entire area when viewed from above the plant1 the leaflets being equidistant from each other1 or contiguous but not overlapping1 and therefore taking the most advantageous position so far as sunlight is concerned4 ,the very striking variation in regard to presence or absence of the petiole to the involucral leaves has been previously noted4 ,an inspection of a very large number of specimens collected in the vicinity of ,columbus and in ,perry and ,logan counties1 as well as of specimens kindly sent for the purpose by ,mr4 ,f4 ,h4 ,burglehaus1 ,prof4 ,a4 ,wetzstein1 and ,supt4 ,h4 ,n4 ,mertz1 shows that petiolate forms occur exclusively in some localities 7,northwestern ,ohio72 in other places the sessile form only obtains 7,eastern ,ohio72 and yet elsewhere both forms are about equally represented 7,central ,ohio74 ,we can not regard the petiolate forms as in any real sense a variety 7much less a distinct species7--since both sessile and petiolate leaves occur in countless cases on the same plant4 ,but where the petiolate form occurs prevailingly or may be exclusively1 it would be advantageous to designate the same2 therefore ,i propose as follows3 ,syndesmon thalictroides f4 ,,petiolata nova forma4 ,involucral leaves prevailingly or exclusively with petioles #b-aj or even #be or more millimeters in length2 otherwise like the typical species4 ,toledo 7,f4 ,h4 ,burglehaus71 ,st4 ,marys 7,a4 ,wetzstein7 and ,west ,mansfield1 occasionally at ,columbus and ,rendville4 ,comparatively few monstrosities were observed4 ,in one case only did merely one leaf and two flowers occur2 often but one flower develops though two leaves occur as usual2 in a few cases a single small leaf was seen on a pedicel4 ,a more common teratological variation was the elongation of the axis at the usual point of insertion of the flowers and involucral leaves1 often distantly separating the leaves with their axillary flowers2 in one case the distance between the points of insertion of the leaves was nearly two inches4 ,the sepals are occasionally excessively numerous4 ,a characteristic very prominent is the similarity of the several stems that come from the same root4 ,if one presents the typical form of flowers and leaves almost without exception1 the second 7and third when present7 do the same2 if one varies in any respect rarely does the remainder fail to follow suit4 ,this can be seen in the tabulation where two or more stems are indicated--both or all are given 7except in ,nos4 #bi1 #cj and #di7 as observed1 in the successive serial numbers4 ,another instance of the persistency of an idiosyncracy1 as we may call it1 was observed in some ,syndesmons taken from the woods by a gardener at ,springfield1 ,ohio1 over forty years ago4 ,the flowers were bountifully double1 and the plants have each year since faithfully presented the same striking peculiarity4 ,the tabulation that follows is based on specimens from ,toledo 7,lucas ,co471 ,nos4 #a-cj2 from ,st4 ,marys 7,auglaize ,co471 ,nos4 #ca-dh2 from ,steubenville 7,jefferson ,co471 ,nos4 #di-fe2 from ,west ,mansfield 7,logan ,co471 ,nos4 #ff-gf2 from ,rendville 7,perry ,co471 ,nos4 #gg-hh2 and from ,columbus1 ,nos4 #hi-ajj4 ,the number of stems to each plant is given in the second column2 then follow in order the number of flowers to each stem1 the number of simple leaves with length of their petioles in millimeters1 the number of compound leaves with length 7also in millimeters7 of their petioles and finally of their petiolules4 ,,tabulation4 ,no4 #a ,stems #b ,fls4 #d ,simp4 #a ,pet4 #h ,comp4 #b ,pet4 #ad ,petl4 #c-h lvs4 lvs4 #b #b #c #a #d #a #d #b-c #c #a #c #a #d #a #d #b-c #d #b #d #a #aj #b #i
