,c4 ,,thurnam4 ,preliminary4 ,some of the sketches constituting these ,antiquarian ,gleanings were done before the idea of publication presented itself3 very soon1 however1 the author found that objects of antiquarian interest were sufficiently numerous in this ,nor-,humbrian province to suggest the advantage of going over the field1 pencil in hand1 and dedicating a small work to its ,ornamental ,antiquities4 ,in following out this intention1 the author has not confined himself to any particular class of objects4 ,in some cases ,historical association has determined the choice1 in others the rarity of examples of the particular kind of ornament illustrated1 but in all cases it is hoped both the connoisseur and the artist will find something worthy attention4 ,in one or two instances the objects may have been represented to the public before with more or less fidelity1 but when such are here repeated1 as in some measure necessary to enable the book when finished the better to comprehend the moveable antiquities of the province1--other matters of interest from the same locality1 hitherto inedited1 will be found on the same plate4 ,,william ,b4 ,,scott4 ,government ,school of ,design1 ,newcastle4 ,illustration ,description of ,plates4 ,i4 ,nautilus ,cup1 set in ,gold with ,cover4 ,this is a beautiful specimen of cinque-cento goldsmith work1 preserved at ,corby ,castle1 the seat of ,h4 ,p4 ,howard1 ,esq4 ,m4 ,p4 ,many specimens of the ,shell of the ,nautilus1 mounted in this manner1 and all produced about the same date are to be found2 none of them1 however1 that we have seen1 exceed1 or even equal the present in excellence of design4 ,,ii4 ,ivory ,cup1 set in ,gold4 ,the ornamentation of this cup is of the same date as the preceding4 ,it is like the ,nautilus cup enriched with pearls and other precious stones1 and its lofty cover is surmounted by the figure of ,st4 ,george killing the ,dragon4 ,this beautiful cup is also the property of ,mr4 ,howard1 with whose family it is historically associated1 having been presented by the valiant admiral ,sir ,edward ,howard to ,catherine of ,arragon4 ,at the ,queen's death it reverted to the ,earl of ,arundel1 and can be traced in the family ever since4 ,during this long period it has been called ,the ,grace ,cup of ,st4 ,thomas ,becket1 and the legends and initials upon it1 which may have been retained from some earlier decorations1 vouch for this ancient and interesting tradition4 ,round the lid is the motto 8,,sobrii ,,estote10 with the letters ,t4 ,b4 supporting a mitre4 ,round the body of the cup is chased 8,,vinum ,,tuum ,,bibe ,,cum ,,gaudio40 ,round the neck of the top is the name ,,god99,,ferare1 probably the name of the goldsmith4 ,,iii4 ,antiquities in ,jarrow ,church4 ,the ,reading-desk is a rich example of ,perpendicular1 with waving ,flamboyant lines in the carving of some portions4 ,from the introduction of these forms ,mr4 ,bloxam has inferred that it is not ,english workmanship4 ,the ,stone carving is very curious1 most probably ,norman1 although it has peculiarities considered until lately to belong to a still earlier date4 ,of the chair of the ,venerable ,bede1 little can be said4 ,it has often been engraved3 is four feet ten inches high3 made of oak4 ,its ornamentation has never been great1 probably not more than the following restoration exhibits4 ,illustration ,,iv4 ,norman ,book-,binding4 ,this is from a ,,ms4 of the book of the ,prophet ,isaiah1 with a gloss or commentary1 presented to the ,prior and convent of ,durham1 along with others by ,robert de ,adington1 who is known to have lived about #aafj1 and preserved in the ,library of the ,cathedral of ,durham1 to the present time4 ,it is a leather cover without knobs1 those having been added in the etching as characteristic of the binding of that time4 ,it will be seen that the general design is completed by repeating the individual stamps of which it is composed4 ,v4 ,relics of the ,commonwealth4 ,these have been preserved in the family of ,f4 ,h4 ,fawkes1 ,esq4 of ,farnley ,hall4 ,cromwell's sword is double-edged1 straight and light1 with quarter basket steel guard4 ,the sword of ,sir ,t4 ,fairfax is a straight broad-sword with basket hilt3 on the blade is the name of the maker ,andrea ,ferara4 ,lambert's sword is a hanger1 serrated at the back2 the hilt is brass2 date on the blade #afdh4 ,the ,watch is a small repeater1 bearing the name of the maker1 ,jaques ,cartier3 the outer case is of leather perforated1 and studded with silver4 ,the matrix of the ,seal is silver1 and inscribed 8,the ,seale for the approbation of ,ministers40 ,,vi4 ,carved ,chimney ,piece in the ,merchants' ,hall1 ,guildhall1 ,newcastle4 ,this lofty and elaborate chimney piece is dated #afcf1 and is evidently of ,flemish workmanship4 ,the large panels represent the ,judgment of ,solomon1 and the ,miraculous ,draught of ,fishes4 ,the upper frieze is composed of mythological figures1 and that below1 immediately over the stone work1 seems to be a representation of the four quarters of the world4 ,,vii4 ,norman ,wall-,painting4 ,this is a painting of the twelfth century 7#aaed7 on the side of a recess in the ,galilee1 ,durham ,cathedral1 formerly the ,altar of our ,lady of ,pity4 ,,viii4 ,the ,same4 ,the opposite ,wall of the ,recess4 ,the soffit of the arch which connects these two jambs being decorated with ,norman foliage1 and the wide back of the recess painted in imitation of hangings4 ,whether these paintings can be properly termed ,fresco--i4 e4 the colours applied simply with clear water to the lime while wet1--is a question4 ,they are more likely distemper of a rude kind4 ,the forms are expressed by a red outline2 the spaces within these outlines being filled in with colour1 with little attempt at shading4 ,,ix4 ,carved ,chairs1 and ,flower ,jar for the ,wall4 ,these chairs1 the property of the ,rev4 ,g4 ,abbes1 are of walnut wood1 and very excellent execution4 ,the flower-jar is ,dutch1 of a kind of earthenware1 judging from the number of specimens remaining1 much imported about a century and a half ago4 ,a vessel for the same purpose might be now manufactured with advantage4 ,x4 ,carved ,furniture4 ,the ,chair is one of a set1 and very curious although rude3 the figures most probably being heraldic4 ,the ,cabinet is very choice in its ornamentation4 ,they belong to ,dr4 ,charlton of ,newcastle4 ,,xi4 ,ancient ,pulpit of ,jarrow ,church4 ,the remains of this beautiful carved pulpit are in the possession of ,mr4 ,rippon1 a zealous collector of carvings and antique furniture4 ,it has been very small--less in proportion to the figure than in our engraving it has been made to appear for the sake of effect--indeed scarcely large enough for a man to stand inside4 ,it is in the same style of workmanship and of the same date as the reading desk given in a former plate 7p4 ,,iii47 of this work4 ,,xii4 ,small ,stone ,figures4 ,durham ,cathedral4 ,these figures are here given not only for the beauty of their action and drapery in some parts1 but as valuable illustrations of costume4 ,they are about #bj inches high under the canopies on the sides of the altar tomb of ,john1 ,lord ,neville2 #achi4 ,they were much mutilated by the ,scotch prisoners1 confined here after the battle of ,dunbar4 ,the heads are here restored in order to complete the characters4 ,,xiii4 ,carved ,ivory ,pastoral ,staffs4 ,the first and largest of these is a very choice specimen of ,ivory carving4 ,it has been elaborately illuminated1 but the colors are now nearly worn off4 ,over the head of our ,saviour there has probably been a canopy of precious metal now gone1 the supports only remaining4 ,on each side of ,christ are small angels in white dresses1 decorated with gold fleur-de-lys1 bearing the instruments of crucifixion1 and the saints rising out of their graves are seen in the ornament under one of these angels4 ,the figures round the lower part are the twelve apostles4 ,between this lower part and the top some ornament has intervened1 as socket holes in the ivory show4 ,the other side is similar to the one given1 only the ,virgin and child take the place of the single figure of our ,saviour4 ,date #acjj to #acbj4 ,it is in the possession of ,p4 ,h4 ,howard1 ,esquire1 ,m4 ,p4 ,the smaller and plainer specimen is in the ,museum of ,newcastle1 and is a good deal earlier in date than the former4 ,,xiv4 ,antiquities at ,hexham1 c4 #a4 ,the ,frith-,stool or ,seat of ,peace1 of the ,sanctuary of ,hexham4 8,there were four crosses set up at a certain distance from the church1 in the four ways leading thereto1 within which the whole town of ,hexham was included4 ,if a malefactor flying for refuge was taken within these crosses but without the town1 the arresting party forfeited #bjj1 a sum probably represented by #aj4 ,if within the town1 #fjj2 within the walls of the church-yard1 #fjj2 within the ,church1 #abjj2 within the choir1 #ahjj2 but if the pursuer dared to take the fugitive from the ,,frith-,,stool1 or from among the holy relics behind the altar1 the offence was beyond redemption40 ,w4 ,sidney ,gibson4 #b4 ,early ,english ornaments on the arcade in the ,transept3 ,hexham ,church4 #c4 ,asperging vessel of copper4 ,now in ,wreay ,church1 ,cumberland1 having been presented by ,miss ,losh of ,woodside1 who designed and principally built that beautiful and curious little church4 ,the legend round the lip is as follows4 ,pries4 ,pur4 ,lalme4 ,g4 ,glanuille4 #d4 ,two keys in the possession of ,mr4 ,rippon4 ,the small one was found in ,tynemouth ruins1 the large one is that of the former church of ,gateshead3 it is near a foot in length1 and furnished with a series of staples4 ,,xv4 ,antiquities in ,york ,minster4 ,the horn of ,ulphus is about #b feet and a half in length4 ,by means of it ,ulphus1 a ,danish nobleman of the time of ,canute enfeoffed the church with his lands and revenues4 ,it was sold to a goldsmith during the ,civil war1 and was returned to the church by the ,fairfax family1 to which event the inscription on the silver hoop refers4 #b4 ,the ,cordwainer's ,bowl1 commonly said to have been given to the cordwainers by ,archbishop ,scrope1 who was beheaded for rebellion in #adje4 ,it seems however more probable that it originally belonged to the guild of ,corpus ,christi at ,york1 having been given to them by ,agnes ,wyman who died in #adac4 ,this ,bowl had the valuable privilege attached to it of granting indulgences1 as the inscription round it describes4 8,recharde1 arche becchope ,scrope grant onto all tho that drinkis of this cope xl dayis to pardun4 ,robart ,gobsim ,becchope mosm 8 grant ye same for me a fore saide xl dayes to pardun4 ,robart ,strensall40 ,it was presented to the ,cathedral on the breaking up of the ,guild3 #ahjh4 ,it holds #d quarts1 wine measure1 and is #ch inches circumference4 ,see 8,proceedings of the ,archological ,institute at ,york40 ,the ancient tiles were found to have been part of the early floor of the ,chapter ,house4 ,,xvi4 ,ancient ,crucifix4 ,this relic is a good specimen of the work of the early enamellers of ,limoges4 ,the ,byzantine origin of this school is shown by the monogram ,,ihs ,,xps1 and the wooden board to which the feet are separately attached4 ,the ,saviour is clothed in a long tunic1 with a crown on his head2 above appears a hand in benediction1 the usual symbol of the first person of the ,trinity4 ,the figure below may represent the dead rising at the crucifixion4 ,the back ground is a copper plate in which various enamels are embedded1 to this is fixed the figure in relief1 the tunic enamelled1 and the eyes formed with blue glass4 ,the whole has been gilt4 ,this cross has been used for the face of a book cover or the centre compartment of a shrine4 ,date end of the #abth century4 ,,xvii4 ,oak ,chair4 ,this chair is in the ,ratcliffe ,room1 ,corby ,castle1 and is called ,my ,lady's ,chair1 having belonged to the ,countess of ,derwentwater1 who went over to ,brussels on the execution of her husband at the ,tower #agae1 and died #agbc4 ,there is an account of it in the 8,memorials of ,james ,earl of ,derwentwater1 collected by ,h4 ,howard40 ,it belongs to the latter half of the #agth century1 although the ornaments have evidently been partly borrowed from very ancient examples4 ,,xviii4 ,roman ,plough in ,bronze1 and ,queen ,mary's ,rosary4 ,this antique is curious as showing the mode of ploughing1 probably introduced into ,britain by the ,romans4 ,the oxen are heavily harnessed1 and there is an appearance of bands round the inner horns of each4 ,the right hand of the figure has probably held a long goad4 ,it was found at ,piercebridge1 ,durham4 ,the ,rosary is gold1 having #aaj round beads1 and #aa large of filigree work1 was sold in ,edinburgh by a ,french refugee1 ,captain ,leger1 at the beginning of the century1 who claimed to be a descendant from ,melville1 ,queen ,mary's ,secretary1 and to have had the relic with others in his family from that time4 ,as far as internal evidence goes it belongs to the date attributed to it4 ,it is now in the possession of ,george ,mennell1 ,esquire1 ,newcastle4 ,,xix4 ,iron ,work4 ,in the absence of iron work properly belonging to the district having come under our notice1 we have given these fine specimens1 belonging to the ,society of ,arts1 ,edinburgh4 ,they are probably of ,nuremberg manufacture4 ,the first is a bell-pull4 ,the second a lock-handle4 ,the three scutcheons are for latch or key plates4 ,,xx4 ,carved ,furniture4 ,this beautiful carved chest is in the possession of ,mr4 ,grey of ,newcastle4 ,the principal mouldings are given below the plate4 ,the large carved settle is very bold and rich in design4 ,,xxi4 ,ivory ,pix1 or ,cup with ,cover4 ,this very remarkable carved cup or ,pix was formerly in the ,museum of ,mr4 ,allan of ,grange near ,darlington1 8a good lawyer and very accurate antiquary10 and was transferred with the rest of his ,museum to the ,natural ,history ,society of ,newcastle4 ,where it originally came from is not known1 and its form and ornamentation present difficulties in assigning a time and place to its production4 ,at the top is the ,virgin and ,child1 and on the base towards which depend four dead serpents1 is rudely carved ,daniel in the ,lion's den4 ,it is unquestionably of considerable antiquity1 although it has been well preserved3 the outer case 7which fits exactly to its shape and opens with hinges and fine clasps7 being very much decayed4 ,this case is of wood1 it has been lined with velvet and is covered outside with stamped and gilt leather1 the patterns however are nearly lost4 ,the cup ,cover is #aj inches high4 ,in ,mr4 ,fox's ,synopsis of the ,museum it is stated that the inscription on a piece of parchment still attached to the ,pix1 was partially recovered as follows4 ,johannes ,schlevel 99 99 99 ,johannes ,e 99 99 99 ,schffle4 ,de ,e 99 99 99 99 ine hujus poculi 99 99 99 entur nostrum ,testimonium4 ,,xxii4 ,a ,water ,vessel of ,bronze4 ,discovered near ,hexham about #ae years ago imbedded in the banks of a rivulet4 ,the height is #ac inches1 and from the armour and the shape of the ,knight's ,helmet it would appear to belong to the early part of the #acth ,century4 ,it is said to be a vessel for washing the ,priest's hands1 the water being poured from the spout at the head of the ,vessel2 it is possible that these ,vessels are of ,eastern origin1 but they seem subsequently to have been widely spread over western ,europe4 ,similar ,vessels are in the ,museum at ,copenhagen4 ,,xxiii4 ,enamelled ,brass4 ,this is a leaf of one of the portable diptychs or triptychs which are much used in the ,greek ,church4 ,in the upper part1 which is of a pointed shape peculiar to the east1 is represented the ,assumption of the ,virgin2 the ,virgin is seated in the centre surrounded by patriarchs1 prophets1 priests and ,kings4 ,among the former ,jacob may be distinguished by his ladder4 ,all these figures have the nimbus1 which is not confined to saints in the iconography of the ,greek ,church1 but is also attributed to patriarchs and others4 ,in each of the four lower compartments1 the ,virgin and child appear within a square frame receiving salutations of bishops1 priests1 hermits1 and saints4 ,in the fourth are the ,virgin and child also1 but represented under the form of the mystical conception4 ,various inscriptions of the names of the characters c4 appear on the borders1 and on the labels in the hands of the figures4 ,above the head of the ,virgin are the monograms ,m 1 ,,ic ,,xc1 7 1 47 ,the strictness of the rules which were laid down in former times for the representation of sacred subjects in ,greek art renders it difficult to assign any date to objects of this kind4 ,each artist has followed so closely the tradition of his predecessors that little variation is to be found in works of periods considerably distant4 ,the relic in question may be either of the ,greek or the ,russo-,greek schools1 and if of the latter it was probably made at ,kiev in ,russia where the manufactory of similar objects is still carried on4 ,,xxiv4 ,flooring ,tiles4 ,money ,box4 ,scold's ,cap4 ,rasp4 ,key ,plate4 #a4 ,flooring ,tiles from ,fountains ,abbey4 ,these are given as showing the manner of tesselating by tiles of various colours and forms fitting together to produce figures4 #b4 ,small ,iron ,money ,box4 ,this is made of beat iron3 the original is about three times the size of the etching4 ,it has a slit in the top1 similar to the 8penny pigs0 formerly common among children4 #c4 ,the ,branks or ,scold's ,cap4 ,this instrument of punishment for scolds has been in very general use4 ,it was found by ,pennant at ,langholm in ,scotland1 is still to be found at ,macclesfield1 and is recorded to have been used at ,lichfield1 ,stafford1 and at ,doddington1 ,lincolnshire4 ,the one figured is still in the police court at ,newcastle4 ,the nose projected through the opening in the front belt1 and the spike under the opening entered the mouth1 in the vain endeavour to suppress the unruly member4 #d4 ,the ,rasp4 ,this instrument1 the forerunner of the knocker1 was formerly in general use in ,edinburgh and elsewhere4 ,the rings hanging upon the projecting limb were drawn rapidly up and down the surface of the iron1 which in the present instance appears to have been furnished with teeth both on the projecting part and on that against the wood of the door4 #e4 ,key ,plate3 is a very pretty ,specimen of the #afth ,century4 ,society of ,arts4 ,edinburgh4 ,,xxv4 ,lamp pendant4 ,french ,carving4 #a4 ,pendant for a ,lamp carved in ,oak4 ,this graceful piece of carving formerly hung from the roof of the ,hall in ,anderson's ,place1 an ,elizabethan ,mansion in which lodged ,charles ,i4 during his stay in ,newcastle1 and in which took place the negotiation between the ,scotch ,army and the ,parliamentarians4 ,it now serves to suspend a ,chandelier and belongs to ,g4 ,rippon1 ,esq4 ,south ,shields4 #b4 ,is a beautiful specimen of ,french carving1 #agth century4 ,it has been cast in brass lately at ,birmingham1 but1 owing to the complexity of the parts1 is expensive even in that form4 ,,xxvi4 ,crucifixion4 ,this seems to have been an ,altar piece4 ,it is evidently of ,flemish workmanship1 and is said to have come from a church in ,lincolnshire4 ,the figures are gilded4 ,the crosses with their figures which are now gone1 have probably risen to some height against a black or crimson ground4 ,some of the draperies in the ,german manner of the #afth century are very well managed4 ,,xxvii4 ,stained ,glass in ,wetheral ,church1 near ,carlisle4 ,the ,virgin and ,child4 ,this is a specimen of late ,english glass1 probably not much earlier than the beginning of the reign of ,henry ,,vii4 ,there are only two kinds of glass used1 one greenish almost colourless1 and the other a yellow1 deepened by the addition of the same colour4 ,the figure is not deficient in feeling1 and some good treatment in the drapery is easily discovered4 ,it is about #b feet in height4 ,,xxviii4 ,purse4 ,panel4 ,wall-,cupboard4 #a4 ,the ,privy ,purse of ,catherine of ,braganza1 at ,sizergh1 the seat of the ,strickland family4 ,sir ,thomas ,strickland was keeper of the privy purse to ,catherine1 till the operation of the ,test ,act compelled him and other ,roman ,catholics to relinquish the place4 ,he vacated his seat in ,parliament as knight of the ,shire for ,westmoreland at the time of the ,popish plot4 ,miss ,strickland in her life of this ,queen1 thus mentions the relic4 ,the privy purse1 the badge of his office is still preserved among the heir-looms of the family at ,lizergh4 ,it is of crimson velvet1 the size and shape of a reticule1 richly embroidered with the royal arms1 and the initials ,c4 ,r4 in gold and silver twist and coloured silk twist4 #b4 ,panel from a chimney piece at ,sizergh4 ,many rooms in this mansion are covered with oak1 and the chimney-pieces are of an immense size and elaboration4 ,they are however not in any way remarkable in general design1 though occasionally exhibiting good portions1 as the one given in the engraving4 #c4 ,oak ,wall-,cupboard in the house of ,i4 ,y4 ,yeates1 ,esq4 near ,sizergh4 ,this is very good in general form and the lower part particularly well managed4 ,it is comparatively of late construction1 bearing the date #afie4 ,,xxix4 ,carved ,oak ,bread ,tray and ,andirons1 c4 ,the ,tray is very beautiful in its foliage3 it is also at ,mr4 ,yeates' house1 of ,parkhead4 ,the fire plate furniture is at ,levens1 an ancient house with a very curious ,dutch garden in excellent preservation4 ,the two figures rest on ,french scroll-work1 and seem to represent the huntsman and the student4 ,the plate at the back of the grate is of the same date4 ,,xxx4 and ,,xxxi4 ,figures of the ,apostles4 ,between the piers of ,carlisle ,cathedral are several large oak screens placed against the stalls of the prebends and painted on the side towards the aisles4 ,three of these give a series of pictures describing each the history of a ,saint4 ,they are much decayed1 as is also the fourth which is divided into twelve compartments1 filled by the twelve ,apostles4 ,the date of these paintings is not determined1 but it is conjectured that the legends in ,english rhyme on the ,histories of the ,saints were written by ,prior ,senhouse whose name occurs in #aejg1 and internal evidence would not assign them much greater antiquity than #aejj4 ,over the figures of the ,apostles are scrolls illuminated with the ,apostles' creed1 and the name of the ,apostle over whose head each particular scroll is placed4 8,credo in ,deum ,patrem omnipotentem1 creatorem cli et terr4 ,petrus40 8,et in ,jesu ,christum filium ejus unicum1 dominum nostrum4 ,andreu40 etc4 ,st4 ,simon is here represented not with the long saw usually attributed to him1 but with a great axe1 if the instrument in the hand of ,mathias1 which is too much decayed to be distinctly made out1 has been a saw1 these two saints have exchanged symbols1 or possibly the painter has named them wrong4 ,the figures are life size or somewhat smaller4 ,,xxxii4 ,almeries4 ,the first of these1 now in ,weatheral ,church was removed from another parish ,church at a little distance1 where it had long supplied the place of a ,vestry1 which office it now fills4 ,the other is in the little chapel called ,st4 ,catherine's in ,carlisle ,cathedral4 ,beside it is another of the same date which has been similarly decorated with a border of rosettes1 within each of which however we find the letters ,t4 ,g4 in cypher4 ,the style of decoration is very rude4 ,under the terminating ends of the hinges which seem intended to represent the heads of serpents1 are remains of crimson velvet4 ,these letters ,t4 ,g4 are the initials of ,thomas ,gondibour1 ,prior about #adij4 ,,xxxiii4 ,vestry ,chest4 ,this very rich specimen of carving and iron work belongs to the early period of the ,renaissance1 the lock being pure flamboyant tracery and canopied figures1 while the wood-carving exhibits the figures of ,saints in good style divided by pilasters instead of buttresses1 and surmounted by tent-shaped instead of pointed canopies4 ,the angels above1 who raise the hangings from the niches1 also show the transition character of the work1 some of them being full draped as in earlier1 and others naked as they appear in later ,italian ornament2 an angel gradually changing into a cupid4 ,the upper part of the centre portion of the lock lifts up by the hinge seen above1 disclosing a keyhole1 the lower part of the same portion falls down with a like purpose4 ,the feet of the ,chest appear to have been added4 ,the figures appear to be the ,virgin1 ,,ss4 ,barbara and ,mary ,magdalene1 ,,ss4 ,peter and ,paul4 ,,xxxiv4 ,drinking ,vessels4 #a4 ,the cup of ,venetian ,glass called the ,luck of ,eden ,hall1 preserved at that place3 the seat of ,sir ,g4 ,musgrave1 near ,penrith4 ,it derives its name and its careful preservation from the tradition1 that it was originally stolen from the ,fairies1 to whom the legendary rhyme attached to it is ascribed3-- ,if this ,cup shall brake or fall1 ,farewell the ,luck of ,eden ,hall4 ,the stamped leather cover is ornamented with foliage and has the sacred monogram on the cover4 #c4 ,german beer ,jug4 ,this is in the ,museum of ,newcastle1 and is stamped with the date #aehi4 ,it has figures of ,david and ,joshua1 and coats of arms above and below the figures1 on the side represented are those of ,nuremberg and ,wurtemburg4 #d4 ,has three figures upon it1 ,justice1 ,faith1 and ,patience1 and the date #aeff4 #e4 ,a ,peg-tankard1 in the possession of ,mrs4 ,davidson of ,ripley ,hall4 ,this species of tankard takes its name as the reader is doubtless aware from a series of keys or pegs projecting inside1 to regulate the depth of draught allowed to each drinker as it passed down the table4 ,the vessel under notice holds five pints1 one pint being contained between each peg4 ,,xxxv4 ,shrine of ,prior ,richard1 ,hexham4 ,the lower part of this curious little chapel has the appearance of an altar tomb4 ,it is however much wider and longer and contains an interior area of #aa ft4 #g in4 by #d ft4 #i in4 with access by the west end4 ,this small apartment is covered by a wooden roof with painted bosses1 and is open to the chancel2 the elaborate tracery on that side having no flat panelling behind it as on the side to the aisle which our engraving represents4 ,opposite the door in this miniature ,chapel is a stone altar over which have been painted three saints1 ,peter1 ,andrew and ,paul1 on three panels1 with a half figure of our ,saviour standing apparently in the tomb with his hands bound1 and the instruments of the passion on either side4 ,the beautiful perpendicular tracery is so much decayed that we give an engraving of it fully made out1 and drawn to scale by ,mr4 ,t4 ,gibson1 architect4 ,illustration ,,xxxvi4 ,carved ,oak ,furniture at ,sizergh4 ,this fine ,mansion from which we have already given some illustrations1 possesses much furniture of the description here given4 ,the form or long seat is peculiar in style and is one of a number1 formerly in the ,chapel4 ,it has the date #aefb and the letters ,w4 ,s41 the initials of the ,strickland of that time1 carved upon it4 ,,xxxvii4 ,door of a ,cupboard1 and ,carved ,seat ends in the ,chapel of ,brougham ,hall4 ,this ,chapel has become1 for its size1 perhaps the most gorgeously decorated in ,england1 under the direction of ,mr4 ,w4 ,brougham4 ,many rich carvings have been collected and the whole illuminated4 ,the cupboard or press is beside the altar and holds the sacramental vessels4 ,it is carved wood1 and the iron hinges and the lock have been lately gilt4 ,,xxxviii4 ,knocker4 ,fibulae4 ,celt4 ,spur4 #a4 ,great ,knocker on the door of ,durham ,cathedral4 #b4 ,bronze ,fibula about #c in4 diameter found in the ,tyne4 #c4 ,beautiful enamelled ,fibula4 ,the original is a third larger than the engraving4 ,it is of brass or bronze thickly enamelled1 and is an elegant adaptation of the form of a harp to the purposes of a buckle4 ,it was dug up at ,risington1 ,northumberland1 #ahdb4 #d4 ,ancient bronze ,celt4 ,this form of weapon has been frequently found1 but the present example is decorated with a formal ornament1 which gives it a greater value4 #e4 ,a ,spur found in a morass2 it resembles the earliest form in the
