had been quietly watching their flocks1 and perhaps looking out anxiously for the dawn1 when suddenly1 without any warning1 an ,angel came down to them from heaven1 and the ,glory of the ,lord surrounded them with a great and wondrous light4 ,the ,shepherds were very frightened at first1 but the ,angel quickly reassured them by saying that he had brought very good news1 which would be a great joy to all people6 ,for a ,holy ,babe was born in ,bethlehem that night1 ,who had come to this earth to be the ,saviour of the ,world6 ,then the ,angel told them that they would know his words were true1 by finding the little ,babe1 wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger4 ,and1 suddenly1 a multitude of the heavenly host were with the ,angel2 and they all praised ,god1 and said1 ,glory to ,god in the highest1 and on earth peace1 good will toward men4 ,then the ,angels all went back to heaven1 and the ,shepherds turned to each other in solemn awe1 and they said1 ,the ,lord has made known to us a wonderful thing--let us go to ,bethlehem and see for ourselves what has come to pass4 ,so they left their flocks and hurried to the town4 ,and there in a lowly stable1 they saw the ,holy ,babe who was sent to ,mary on the morning of ,christmas day6 ,months before this the ,angel ,gabriel had been sent from heaven to tell ,mary that she was to be the most blessed of all women1 for the ,holy ,child who was to be given to her1 was to be called the ,son of ,god4 ,now ,he had come6 ,and she laid ,him--the ,son of ,god--in a manger1 because there was no room for them in the ,inn4 ,the town was so full of travellers at that time1 that ,mary and ,joseph were given a shelter in the stable4 ,and so the ,baby ,jesus had a manger for ,his cradle4 ,now ,i am going to tell you a little true story which happened where ,i live4 ,there was a ,children's ,service1 and the clergyman asked the children if they could remember what he had begged them to do the ,christmas before8 ,then a little girl stood up1 and gently and bravely answered1 ,you asked us to say-- ,oh1 come to my heart1 ,lord ,jesus1 ,there is room in my heart for ,thee6 ,and he answered ,yes1 that was it and you are a kind little girl to tell us6 ,so to-day1 with this sweet prayer in our minds1 we can remember that there is a place in the heart of each one of us1 which we can keep for ,jesus6 ,we can think of ,his love to us2 we can love ,him in return2 and worship ,him every day we live4 ,and if we make room for ,jesus in our hearts here1 we shall find by and by1 that ,he will give us a crown of glory1 that fadeth not away4 ,,ii4 ,,the ,,good ,,samaritan ,,luke #aj4cj ,,there was once a lonely man walking in ,palestine on the long mountainous road between ,jerusalem and ,jericho4 ,but plight1 lying there in the glaring sunshine1 aching with pain and consumed with thirst4 ,would no one come and help him8 he thought4 ,then some footsteps came close to him1 and as he lifted his weary by his side1 he brought him at length to an inn1 and stayed with him all night4 ,at length the morning came1 and the traveller was obliged to proceed on his journey4 ,so he called the master of the great miracle2 and ,he reminded them that ,he ,himself1 while ,he was in the world1 was the ,light of the world4 ,then the ,lord ,jesus made clay1 and put it on the eyes of the blind man2 and told him to go and wash in the ,pool of ,siloam4 ,so the blind man did what ,jesus had told him1 and he went to the ,pool of ,siloam1 and washed1 and came back quite cured4 ,you can imagine how the people who knew him gathered round him1 with endless questions4 ,how was it that he could see8 ,and was he the very blind man who had sat all his life1 and begged8 ,and he answered very simply1 ,a man named ,jesus made clay1 and anointed my eyes1 and told me to go and wash in ,siloam2 and ,i washed1 and came back able to see6 ,then the ,pharisees1 hearing of all this1 came and questioned him again1 even calling his father and mother to answer them1 as to whether this was their son1 and if so1 had he been born blind8 ,so the parents answered that this was quite true4 ,and then the ,pharisees argued that the man who cured him must be a sinner1 for he had healed him on the ,sabbath day6 ,at last the blind man lost all patience1 and exclaimed indignantly3 ,why herein is a marvellous thing1 that ye know not from whence ,he is1 and yet ,he hath opened mine eyes6 ,since the world began1 it has never been heard that any man opened the eyes of one that had been born blind6 ,if this man were not of ,god ,he could do nothing6 ,then the ,jews were so angry that they cast him out of the ,synagogue1 and would have nothing more to do with him4 ,when ,jesus heard that they had cast him out1 ,he found him in the ,temple1 and in ,his great tenderness ,he cheered him with most glorious assurances4 ,the blind man had believingly obeyed the ,lord ,jesus when ,he told him to wash in the ,siloam ,pool2 and he had defended his belief that this ,man must be a ,prophet if ,he could do these wonderful things4 ,and now our ,lord revealed to him something which was above all other beliefs--and ,he said to him1 ,dost thou believe on the ,son of ,god8 ,and the healed man answered1 ,who is ,he1 ,lord1 that ,i might believe on ,him8 ,and ,jesus answered him1 ,thou hast both seen ,him1 and it is ,he that to have a greater blessing still1 even to have his sins forgiven4 ,and for us--,he sees how we need to be healed of our sins1 and from the remembrance of what we have done wrong2 and ,he says to us1 too3 ,wilt thou be made whole8 ,wilt thou have my forgiveness1 and come to me and be saved8 ,and then1 like the helpless man in the story1 we can look up into the face of ,jesus1 ,who is in ,heaven looking down on us now1 and all at once we can realize ,his mighty power to save us6 and we can yield ourselves to ,his love4 ,if we come to ,him so1 ,he will make life a different thing for us4 ,we shall go about our work1 or our school1 or our home1 or our play1 with a glad heart because we have ,jesus1 as our own ,saviour4 ,illustration ,,xiii4 ,,let ,,through ,,the ,,roof ,,mark #b4d that the ,lord ,jesus could heal those who were sick4 ,when these friends heard that ,jesus was in their city1 they were very anxious to get the sick man to ,him4 ,but he was so helpless that he could only lie on his bed1 waited on by those around him4 ,but these four friends firmly believed that ,jesus could heal the sick man1 and they decided to carry him1 just as he was on his bed1 and ask ,jesus to cure him4 ,but when they reached the house where ,jesus was1 there was such a crowd that they could not even get near the door4 ,you can imagine how they tried to persuade the people to make room for them to get in2 but everyone was so anxious to see the ,lord ,jesus1 and to hear ,him speak1 that they could not even get near the door4 ,what was to be done now8 ,should they turn back8 ,what8 get so near to ,jesus1 and not be healed after all6 ,then the four friends thought of another plan4 ,they would get the invalid up the outside staircase that there often is in ,eastern houses1 and would get on to the roof6 ,so they carried the poor sick man carefully up the staircase1 and when they had uncovered a place in the roof1 they let down his bed right through the ceiling to the feet of ,jesus4 ,ah6 what do you think the dear ,lord said then8 ,when ,he saw their faith--the faith of those men who had brought the sick man to ,jesus--,he said to the poor trembling invalid1 ,son1 be of good cheer1 thy sins be forgiven thee6 ,and then when the people wondered very much at ,jesus being able to forgive sins1 ,he showed them ,his great power1 by making the sick man quite well the very next moment4 ,he asked the people which was the easiest for ,god to do1 to forgive sins1 or to make people well in an instant8 ,then ,he said to the man1 sick of the palsy1 ,arise1 take up thy bed1 and go unto thine house4 ,jesus made him so well that though he had to be carried there on a bed1 he received strength to obey1 and walked back to his home1 carrying his bed in his arms6 ,this wonderful story of one of the miracles of ,jesus helps us to understand three things3 first1 the great power of ,jesus2 and next1 that we should bring our friends to ,jesus1 to get blessed2 and third1 that we should let no difficulties stop us in coming to ,him4 ,he is in heaven now1 but ,he is always close to us1 and we can speak to ,him at any moment2 and no difficulty1 however great it seems to large cities had been built1 and the lovely ,lake was surrounded by mountains1 and there were numbers of ships and boats which went across the ,lake1 some with fishermen plying their trade1 and others carrying merchandise to the opposite shores4 ,but the ,lake1 looking so beautiful in the sunshine1 and reflecting in its waters every shade of colour of the sky1 or of the surrounding mountains1 sometimes had violent storms1 instead of calm on its lovely waters4 ,the wind suddenly rose1 and swept down between the mountains2 and almost before the sailors could furl their sails1 the wind would drive the boat before it1 as if it would swamp it altogether4 ,but one day1 when all was beautiful and bright1 ,jesus was walking by the ,lake1 and a number of people out of the cities around came out to see ,him1 for they longed to hear ,his words2 no one had ever spoken to them as ,he did1 nor comforted them with assurances that their sins might be forgiven4 ,as the ,lord saw the multitudes
