and darkness was upon the deep4 ,and the ,spirit of ,god moved upon the face of the waters4 ,and ,god said3 ,let there be light--and there was light4 ,and there was evening and there was morning1 the first day4--,and ,god made a vast expanse which he called ,heaven4 ,and there was evening and there was morning1 a second day4--,and ,god gathered the waters into one place1 and the dry land appeared4 ,and ,god said3 ,let the earth put forth grass and herbs and trees bearing fruit4 ,and there was evening and there was morning1 a third day4--,and ,god made the two great lights1 the greater light to rule the day1 and the lesser light to rule the night4 ,he made the stars also4 ,and there was evening and there was morning1 a fourth day4--,and ,god created the great sea-monsters1 and every creature that lives in the waters1 and every fowl that flies under heaven4 ,and there was evening and there was morning1 a fifth day4--,and ,god made the beasts of the earth1 and the cattle1 and everything that creeps upon the ground4 ,and ,god said3 ,let us make man in our image1 and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea1 and over the birds of the heavens1 and over everything that lives upon the earth4 ,and ,god created man in ,his own image1 in the image of ,god created ,he him2 male and female created ,he them4 ,and ,god saw everything that ,he had made1 and behold1 it was very good4 ,and there was evening and there was morning1 a sixth day4 ,and ,god rested on the seventh day from all ,his work1 and ,he blessed the seventh day and hallowed it4 7,gen4 #a47 #b4 ,adam and ,eve ,god planted a garden eastward1 in ,eden4 ,this garden has been called ,paradise4 ,and out of the ground ,god made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight2 the tree of life also in the midst of the garden2 and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil4 ,and ,god put man in the garden of ,eden to dress it and to keep it1 and ,he said3 ,of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat2 but of the tree of knowledge thou shalt not eat2 for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die--,god said also3 ,it is not good that the man should be alone2 ,i will make him a help1 answering to him4 ,and ,god brought all living creatures to ,adam to see what he would call them1 and whatsoever ,adam called every creature1 that was the name thereof2 but for man there was not found a help meet for him4 ,and ,god caused a deep sleep to fall upon ,adam1 and ,he took one of his ribs and made thereof a woman and brought her unto him4 ,then ,adam said3 ,this is now bone of my bones1 and flesh of my flesh2 she shall be called ,woman1 because she was taken out of ,man4 ,therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother1 and shall cleave unto his wife1 and they shall be one flesh4--,adam was the first man1 and ,eve was the first woman4--,they were innocent1 and knew neither sin1 nor sorrow1 nor sickness1 nor death4 7,gen4 #b47 #c4 ,the ,fall ,the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which ,god had made4 ,and he said unto the woman3 ,has ,god truly said3 ,ye shall not eat of any tree in the garden8 ,the woman answered3 ,of all the other trees we may freely eat2 but of the tree of knowledge ,god hath said3 ,ye shall not eat of it1 lest ye die4 ,the serpent answered3 ,ye shall not die2 for ,god doth know that in the day ye eat thereof1 your eyes shall be opened1 and ye shall be as ,god1 knowing good and evil4 ,when the woman saw that the tree was good for food1 and that it was a delight to the eyes1 and desirable to make one wise1 she took of the fruit and ate1 and she gave also to her husband1 and he ate4 ,then their eyes were opened1 and they knew that they were naked4 ,in the evening they heard the voice of ,god1 and hid themselves among the trees of the garden4 ,then ,god called unto ,adam and said3 ,where art thou8 ,and ,adam said3 ,i heard ,thy voice1 and ,i was afraid1 because ,i was naked2 and ,i hid myself4 ,then ,god said3 ,who told thee that thou wast naked8 ,hast thou eaten of the tree of knowledge8 ,adam answered3 ,the woman gave me of the fruit1 and ,i ate4 ,then ,god said to the woman3 ,what is this thou hast done8 ,she answered3 ,the serpent beguiled me1 and ,i ate4 ,and ,god said unto the serpent3 ,cursed art thou above every beast of the field2 upon thy belly shalt thou go1 and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life4 ,i will put enmity between thee and the woman1 and between thy seed and her seed3 he shall bruise thy head1 and thou shalt bruise his heel4--,unto the woman ,god said3 ,in pain thou shalt bring forth children2 and thy husband shall rule over thee4--,unto the man ,god said3 ,cursed is the ground for thy sake2 in the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat thy bread1 till thou return unto the ground2 for dust thou art1 and unto dust shalt thou return4 ,so ,god drove ,adam and ,eve out of the garden of ,eden1 and ,he placed ,cherubim with a flaming sword to keep the way to the tree of life4--,thus sin came into the world1 and through sin came sorrow and sickness and death4 7,gen4 #c47 #d4 ,cain and ,abel ,adam and ,eve got two sons2 the first was called ,cain and the second ,abel4 ,cain tilled the ground1 and ,abel kept sheep4 ,once they both brought their offerings to the ,lord3 ,cain brought of the fruit of the ground1 and ,abel of the best of his flock4 ,god had respect unto ,abel and his offering2 but unto ,cain and his offering ,he had not respect4 ,then ,cain was very wroth1 and his countenance fell4 ,and ,god said unto him3 ,why is thy countenance fallen8 ,is it not so that if thou doest well1 thou mayst freely look up8 ,and if thou doest not well1 sin coucheth at the door1 and its desire shall be unto thee1 but do thou rule over it4 ,still ,cain rose up against ,abel his brother and slew him1 when they were in the field4 ,and the ,lord asked ,cain3 ,where is thy brother8 ,cain answered3 ,i know not2 am ,i my brother's keeper8 ,then the ,lord said3 ,thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground4 ,therefore cursed art thou2 and a fugitive and a wanderer shalt thou be in the earth4 ,and ,cain went and dwelt on the east of ,eden4 ,his descendants were inventive and skilful1 they invented harps and flutes and forged weapons2 but they did also that which was evil in the eyes of the ,lord4 7,gen4 #d47 #e4 ,seth and ,his ,descendants ,adam and ,eve got a son instead of ,abel4 ,he was called ,seth4 ,seth and his descendants were pious and were called the children of ,god2 but they were not innocent2 for all have sinned in ,adam4 ,one of them was called ,enoch2 he walked with ,god and did not die2 the ,lord took him1 when he was #cfe years old4 ,methuselah lived #ifi years1 and is the oldest of all men4 ,his grandson was ,noah4 7,gen4 #e47 #f4 ,the ,flood ,men multiplied on the earth1 and the sons of ,seth mingled with the descendants of ,cain and took their daughters for wives4 ,thereby wickedness became great over all the earth1 and it repented ,god that he had made man4 ,but ,noah found favor in the eyes of ,god4 ,therefore ,he said to ,noah3 ,make thee an ark1 three hundred cubits#a long1 fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits high1 and pitch it within and without with pitch2 for ,i will bring a flood of waters upon the earth to destroy everything that lives4 ,noah built the ship which is called the ark1 and went into it with his wife and his three sons1 ,shem1 ,ham and ,japhet1 and their wives1 and a male and a female of all the animals that cannot live in the water4 ,then ,god let it rain for #dj days and #dj nights1 and the waters rose #ae cubits over the highest mountains4 ,and every living thing was destroyed upon the earth4 ,noah only1 and those that were with him in the ark1 were left alive4 ----- ,footnote #a3 ,this cubit was about #ai inches long4 ----- ,god remembered ,noah and caused a wind to pass over the earth1 and the waters sank1 and the ark rested upon the mountains of ,ararat4 ,noah opened the window1 and he sent forth a raven1 and it went forth to and fro1 until the waters were dried up from off the earth4 ,then he sent forth a dove1 but as she found no rest for her foot1 she returned to the ark1 and ,noah put forth his hand and took her unto him4 ,and he stayed yet seven days1 and he sent forth the dove again4 ,and she came back to him again at eventide1 and in her mouth she had a fresh olive leaf4 ,and he stayed yet seven days and sent forth the dove again1 and she returned not2 then ,noah knew that the earth must be dry4 ,the waters had then covered the earth for more than one year4 ,now ,noah went out of the ark and made a thank offering unto the ,lord4 ,and the ,lord said in ,his heart3 ,i will not again curse the ground for man's sake1 for man is evil from his youth4 ,while the earth remaineth1 seedtime and harvest1 cold and heat1 summer and winter1 day and night shall not cease4 ,and ,god set the rainbow in the heavens as a token that ,he would remember ,his covenant4 ,noah lived till he was #iej years old1 and is the second father of the human race4 7,gen4 #f-i47 #g4 ,the ,tower of ,babel ,the whole earth was of one speech4 ,when men journeyed eastward1 they found a large plain1 and they dwelt there4 ,and they said one to another3 ,come1 let us build a tower1 whose top may reach unto heaven1 lest we be scattered over the whole earth4 ,but the ,lord came down and confounded their language1 so the one did not understand the other4 ,thus the ,lord scattered them over all the earth1 and they left off building4 ,therefore the place is called ,babel1 that is1 ,confusion4--,the descendants of ,shem remained in ,asia1 the descendants of ,ham went southwest to ,africa1 and the descendants of ,japhet went westward to ,europe4 7,gen4 #aa3a-i47 #h4 ,abraham ,journeys to ,canaan ,terah descended from ,shem4 ,he dwelt in ,mesopotamia and had three sons1 ,abraham1 ,nahor and ,haran4 ,terah served strange gods4 ,and the ,lord said unto ,abraham3 ,get thee out of thy country1 and from thy kindred1 and from thy father's house1 unto the land that ,i will show thee4 ,i will make of thee a great nation1 and in thee shall all the families of the earth be blessed4 ,so ,abraham took ,sarah1 his wife1 and his brother's son ,lot1 and all that he had1 and went to the land of ,canaan4 ,and the ,lord appeared unto ,abraham and said3 ,unto thy seed will ,i give this land2 and there he builded an altar unto the ,lord1 who appeared unto him4 ,abraham was very rich in cattle1 in silver and in gold2 and ,lot also1 who went with ,abraham1 had flocks and herds4 ,and there was a strife between the herdsmen of ,abraham and the herdsmen of ,lot about the pastures4 ,and ,abraham said unto ,lot3 ,let there be no strife1 ,i pray thee1 between thee and me1 and between my herdsmen and thy herdsmen2 for we are brethren4 ,is not the land before thee8 ,if thou wilt take the left hand1 then ,i will go to the right2 or if thou take the right hand1 then ,i will go to the left4 ,lot saw that the plain of ,jordan was well watered1 that it was like the land of ,egypt1 even as the garden of ,jehovah4 ,so ,lot chose the plain for himself1 and pitched his tents toward ,sodom4 ,but the inhabitants of ,sodom were wicked1 and sinners against the ,lord exceedingly4 7,gen4 #ab-ac47 #i4 ,abraham ,delivers ,lot ,kings from the ,east came and made war against the kings of ,sodom and ,gomorrah1 were victorious over them1 and carried off the people and their goods4 ,they also carried off ,lot and all his goods4 ,when ,abraham heard that his brother's son was taken captive1 he led forth his trained men1 to the number of #cah1 pursued the enemy and overtook them2 and he brought back all the goods1 and set ,lot and the people free4 ,when ,abraham returned1 ,melchizedek1 king of ,salem and priest of ,god ,most ,high1 went out to him with bread and wine1 and blessed him4--,and the king of ,sodom came and said unto ,abraham3 ,take the goods to thyself and give me the people4 ,but ,abraham answered3 ,i will not take a thread nor a shoe-latchet1 lest thou shouldest say1 ,i have made ,abraham rich4 7,gen4 #ad47 #aj4 ,abraham is ,strong in ,faith ,the ,lord appeared again unto ,abraham and promised him that his seed should become as numerous as the stars of the heavens4 ,abraham was old1 and ,sarah was old1 and they had no children2 but ,abraham believed the ,lord's promise1 and ,he reckoned it to him for righteousness4 ,abraham sat in the door of his tent in the heat of the day4 ,as he lifted up his eyes1 lo1 three men stood over against him4 ,abraham ran to meet them1 bowed himself to the earth and said3 ,my lord1 pass not by thy servant3 let now a little water be fetched1 and wash your feet1 and rest yourselves under the tree and let me fetch a morsel of bread to strengthen you2 after that you shall pass on4 ,and they said3 ,so do1 as thou hast said4 ,and ,abraham ran unto the herd and had a good calf dressed and prepared1 and ,sarah took fine meal and baked cakes4 ,and he took butter and milk and set before the men1 and he stood by them under the tree1 while they did eat4 ,then one of them said3 ,where is ,sarah your wife8 ,abraham answered3 ,she is in the tent4 ,then said he3 ,in a year ,i will return1 and ,sarah shall then have a son4 ,sarah heard this in the tent and laughed2 for she thought she was too old to have children4 ,but the one who was the ,lord said3 ,is anything too wonderful for the ,lord8 7,gen4 #ae3e1 #f2 #ah3a-ad47 #aa4 ,abraham ,prays for ,sodom ,and the men rose up1 and ,abraham followed them4 ,then the ,lord said3 ,i will destroy ,sodom2 for its sins are grievous4 ,the two angels went toward ,sodom1 and ,abraham stood alone before the ,lord and said3 ,wilt ,thou consume the righteous with the wicked8 ,peradventure there are fifty righteous within the city2 wilt ,thou not spare it for the sake of these8 ,the ,lord answered3 ,if ,i find fifty righteous ,i will not consume it4 ,abraham said3 ,behold now1 ,i have taken upon me to speak unto the ,lord1 who am but dust and ashes2 peradventure there shall lack five of the fifty1 wilt ,thou destroy the whole city for lack of five8 ,the ,lord answered3 ,i will not destroy it if ,i find there forty and five4 ,and ,abraham continued to pray1 until he came down to ten1 and the ,lord promised to spare the city if ,he should find ten righteous in it4 ,meanwhile the two angels came to ,sodom and went in to ,lot4 ,then the men in the city surrounded ,lot's house to seize the angels2 but they smote them with blindness1 and brought ,lot and his wife and his two daughters out of the city4 ,and one of the angels said3 ,look not behind thee1 neither stay in all the plain2 escape to the mountain4 ,but ,lot's wife looked back1 and she became a pillar of salt4 ,then the ,lord rained fire from heaven1 and the fertile plain where ,sodom and ,gomorrah stood became the ,dead ,sea4--,thus it appeared that there were not ten righteous in ,sodom4 7,gen4 #ah3af-cc2 #ai47 #ab4 ,god ,proves ,abraham ,god visited ,sarah at the time ,he had promised1 and she bare a son1 who was called ,isaac4 ,abraham was then #ajj ,moriah and offer him on one of the mountains which ,i will tell thee of4 ,abraham rose early in the morning1 saddled his ass1 took two of his young men with him and ,isaac his son2 and he clave the wood for the burnt offering1 and went unto the place of which ,god had told him4 ,on the third day ,abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place afar off4 ,he said then to his young men3 ,abide ye here1 and ,i and the lad will go yonder and worship4 ,and he took the wood for the burnt offering and laid it upon ,isaac1 and he took in his hand the fire and the knife2 and they went both of them together4 ,then ,isaac said3 ,father1 here is wood and fire2 but where is the lamb for a burnt offering8 ,abraham answered3 ,god will provide himself the lamb1 my son4 ,so they went both of them together4 ,when they came to the place1 ,abraham built an altar1 laid the wood in order1 bound ,isaac and laid him upon the wood4 ,and he stretched forth his hand and took the knife to slay his son4 ,then the ,lord called unto him out of heaven and said3 ,abraham1 ,abraham6 ,lay not thy hand upon the lad1 neither do thou anything unto him2 for now ,i know that thou fearest ,god1 seeing thou hast not withheld thy son1 thine only son from me4 ,abraham lifted up his eyes1 and saw a ram behind him1 caught in the thicket by his horns4 ,and he took the ram and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son4--,god called the second time out of heaven and said3 ,because thou hast done this thing1 and hast not withheld thy son1 thine only son1 from me1 ,i will exceedingly bless thee1 and ,i will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven1 and as the sand which is upon the sea shore2 and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed4 ,so ,abraham returned unto his things of his master's in his hand1 and he went to ,mesopotamia1 unto the city of ,nahor4 ,and he made his camels kneel down without the city by the well at the time of evening1 the time that women go ,before he yet had done speaking1 ,rebekah came out1 and she was very fair1 and she had her pitcher on her shoulder and went to the well and filled her pitcher4 ,and the servant went to her and said3 ,give me to drink1 ,i pray thee1 of thy pitcher4 ,and she said3 ,drink1 my lord1 and ,i will give thy camels drink also1 and she drew water for all his camels4 ,and he wondered greatly while he looked on4 ,when all the camels had done drinking he gave her a ring and two bracelets of gold and said3 ,whose daughter are you8 ,is there room in your father's house for us to lodge in8 ,she said3 ,i am the daughter of ,bethuel1 the son of ,nahor4 ,we have both straw and provender enough1 and room to lodge in4 ,then the man bowed his head1 worshipped the ,lord and said3 ,blessed be the ,lord1 who hath led me in the way to the house of my master's brother4 ,and ,rebekah ran home and told all these words4 ,rebekah's brother1 ,laban1 ran out to the man1 brought him into the house1 gave the camels straw and provender1 and set food before him to eat2 but he said3 ,i will not eat until ,i have told mine errand4 ,when he had told all1 ,laban and ,bethuel answered3 ,this comes from the ,lord2 take ,rebekah and go1 and let her be thy master's son's wife4 ,and they called ,rebekah1 and said unto her3 ,wilt thou go with this man8 ,and she said3 ,i will go4 ,then ,eliezer took her and went his way4 thou art a ,galilean1 thy speech betrays thee4 ,then ,peter began to swear1 saying3 ,i know not this ,man ye speak of4 ,then the cock crowed1 and at the same time they brought ,jesus through the regretted what he had done1 and came to the priests with the thirty pieces of silver and said3 ,i have sinned in that ,i betrayed innocent blood4 ,but they answered3 ,what is that to us8 ,see thou to paying tribute to ,caesar1 and calls ,himself ,christ1 a ,king4 ,pilate took him into the hall of judgment and asked3 ,art ,thou a ,king8 ,jesus answered3 ,i am ,king2 but my kingdom is not of this world2 for then my servants would have fought for me4 ,i came into the world to bear witness unto the truth4 ,every one who is of the truth heareth my voice4 ,pilate perceived that ,jesus was innocent and would gladly have set ,him free2 but he feared the priests and the scribes1 therefore he dared not do it openly1 but went out to the people and said3 ,ye have a custom that ,i should release a prisoner at the ,passover4 ,whom will ye have1 ,jesus or ,barabbas8 ,the priests stirred up the people against ,jesus1 and they cried3 ,away with ,him6 ,but give us ,barabbas4 ,now1 ,barabbas was a murderer and robber4 ,pilate then1 hoping to excite the pity of the people1 delivered ,jesus to the soldiers to be scourged4 ,and the soldiers stripped off ,his clothes and scourged ,him2 then they threw around ,him a purple robe1 put a reed in ,his hand and a crown of thorns upon ,his head1 and fell down before ,him and shouted3 ,hail1 ,thou ,king of the ,jews6 ,and they struck ,him on the head with the reed4 ,and ,pilate brought ,him out to the people and said3 ,behold the ,man6 ,but the ,jews cried3 ,crucify ,him1 crucify ,him6 ,pilate still sought to set ,him free1 but they cried3 ,if thou release this ,man1 thou art not ,caesar's friend6 ,then ,pilate took water and washed his hands before the people and said3 ,i am innocent of the blood of this righteous ,man6 ,they said3 ,his blood be upon us and upon our children6 ,then he delivered ,jesus to be crucified4 7,all the ,gospels47 #id4 ,jesus on the ,cross ,they now led ,jesus out of the city to a place called ,golgotha1 to was written3 ,,jesus ,,of ,,nazareth1 ,,king ,,of ,,the ,,jews4 ,it was about nine o'clock in the forenoon when they crucified ,him4 ,two robbers were also crucified with ,him1 one on ,his right and one on ,his left side4 ,while ,jesus was hanging on the cross ,he said3 7#a7 ,father1 forgive them2 for they know not what they do6--,at the cross stood the mother of ,jesus1 and the disciple that ,jesus loved4 ,jesus said3 7#b7 ,woman1 behold thy ,son6 ,and to the disciple ,he said3 ,behold thy mother6 ,and from that hour the disciple took her unto himself4--,the soldiers and the priests mocked ,him4 ,and one of the robbers said3 ,if thou art ,christ1 save ,thyself and us6 ,the other robber said3 ,we suffer what we have deserved1 but this ,man hath done nothing amiss4 ,and he said unto ,jesus3 ,lord1 remember me when ,thou comest into ,thy kingdom6 ,to him ,jesus said3 7#c7 ,verily1 today thou shalt be with me in ,paradise6--,from twelve o'clock there was darkness over the whole earth1 until three o'clock1 when ,jesus cried with a loud voice3 7#d7 ,my ,god1 my ,god1 why hast ,thou forsaken me8--,and after that ,he cried3 7#e7 ,i thirst6 ,one of them ran and filled a sponge with vinegar and gave ,him to drink4--,thereupon ,he said3 7#f7 ,it is finished6--,and again ,he cried with a loud voice3 7#g7 ,father1 into ,thy hands ,i commend my spirit6 ,and having said this1 ,he bowed ,his head and gave up the ghost4 ,and the earth did quake1 and the rocks were rent1 and the tombs were opened1 and the veil between the ,holy and the ,holy of ,holies in the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom4 ,that the bodies might be taken down from the crosses before the ,sabbath1 the ,jews asked ,pilate that their legs might be broken4 ,the soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the two robbers2 but when they came to ,jesus1 they saw that ,he was dead already1 therefore they broke not ,his legs2 but to make sure one of the soldiers pierced ,his side ,jesus4 ,in the way they said to one another3 ,who shall roll us away the stone from the tomb8 ,when they came to the tomb1 they saw that the stone was rolled away4 ,one of the women1 named ,mary ,magdalene1 ran to ,peter and the disciple whom ,jesus loved1 and said3 ,they have taken away the ,lord out of the tomb1 and we know not where they have laid ,him4 ,the other women went into the ,jerusalem1 and knowest not the things which are come to pass there in these days8 ,the chief priests and our rulers have crucified ,jesus of ,nazareth4 ,but ,he was a prophet mighty in deed and word1 and we hoped that it was ,he who should redeem ,israel4 ,and this is now the third day since these things came to pass4 ,moreover1 certain women1 having been early at the tomb1 came and told that the tomb was empty1 and that they had seen a vision of angels1 who said that ,he was alive4 ,and certain disciples went to the tomb1 and found it even so as the women had said2 but ,him they saw not4 ,jesus answered3 ,o foolish men1 and slow of heart to believe what ,moses and the prophets have said6 ,behooved it not ,christ to suffer these things and to enter into ,his glory8 ,and ,he interpreted to them all that was written concerning ,himself4 ,when they drew nigh unto ,emmaus1 ,he made as though ,he would go farther4 ,and they constrained ,him1 saying3 ,abide with us2 for it is toward evening1 and the day is far spent4 ,and ,he went in to abide with them4 ,but when ,he sat down with them to meat1 ,he took bread1 blessed it1 and broke it1 and gave to them4 ,and their eyes were opened1 and they knew ,him4 ,but ,he vanished out of their sight4 ,and they said one to another3 ,was not our heart burning within us while ,he spoke to us in the way1 while ,he opened to us the ,scriptures8 ,and they rose up that very hour and returned to ,jerusalem1 and found the apostles gathered together1 and told them the things that happened in the way1 and how ,he was known of them in the breaking of the bread4 7,luke #bd3ac-be47 ,while they were speaking1 ,jesus stood in the midst of them and said unto them3 ,peace be unto you6 ,they were terrified1 for they knew ,him not4 ,but ,he showed them ,his hands and ,his feet1 and they were glad4--,but ,thomas was not with them4 ,when the others said3 ,we have seen the ,lord1 he said3 ,except ,i shall put my finger in the print of the nails in ,his hands1 and put my hand into ,his side1 ,i will not believe4 ,after eight days ,his disciples were again assembled1 and the doors were shut4 ,then ,jesus again stood in the midst of them and said3 ,peace be unto you6 ,unto ,thomas ,he said3 ,see my hands1 and reach hither thy hand1 and put it into my side1 and be no longer faithless1 but believing6 ,thomas said3 ,my ,lord and my ,jesus showed ,himself several times to the apostles and spoke of the things pertaining to the kingdom of ,god4 ,he was also seen by others1 once by five hundred brethren4 ,he showed ,himself to the eleven apostles on a mountain in ,galilee1 and said3 ,all authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth4 ,go ye therefore1 and make disciples of all the nations1 baptizing them into the them2 and while ,he blessed them1 ,he parted from them1 and was carried up into heaven2 and a cloud received ,him out of their sight4 ,and while they were looking into heaven1 two men stood by them in the ,holy ,spirit1 not many days hence4 ,until this came to pass1 they were to abide at ,jerusalem4 ,on one of these days they chose one of the disciples named ,matthias to be apostle in the place of ,judas4 ,on the morning of the day of ,pentecost1 ten days after the ascension1 the apostles were assembled as usual4 ,and suddenly there came from heaven the sound as of a mighty wind1 and it filled all the house where they were sitting4 ,and there appeared unto them tongues as of fire1 parting asunder2 and it sat upon each one of them4 ,and they were all filled with the ,holy ,spirit1 and began to speak with other tongues1 as the ,spirit gave them utterance4 ,now1 there were dwelling at ,jerusalem ,jews from every nation4 ,when this sound was heard1 they came together and said3 ,what is this8 ,are not all these men ,galileans8 ,and how hear we then every man in our own language speaking the mighty words of ,god8 ,but ,peter1 standing up1 spake forth unto them saying3 ,jesus of ,nazareth1 whom ye have crucified1 sitteth now at the right hand of ,god1 and has poured out ,his ,holy ,spirit4 ,now1 when they heard this1 they were pricked in their heart and they said3 ,what shall we do8 ,peter answered3 ,repent ye1 and be baptized in the name of ,jesus ,christ unto the remission of your sins2 and ye shall receive the gift of the ,holy ,spirit4 ,they then that received the word were baptized on the same day1 about three thousand souls4 ,and all that believed were daily together in prayer1 and in breaking the bread in the ,lord's ,supper4 ,they sold their possessions1 and parted them to all1 according as any man had need4 ,and day by day the ,lord added others to the congregation4 7,acts #b47 #ajj4 ,the ,apostles ,before the ,council ,peter and ,john went up to the temple to pray4 ,a man that had been lame from his birth was sitting outside the door asking alms4 ,peter said3 ,silver and gold have ,i none2 but what ,i have1 that ,i give thee3 ,in the name of ,jesus of ,nazareth1 arise and walk6 ,and immediately he leaped up1 and entered with them into the temple and praised ,god4 ,and many were baptized4 ,but the priests and the scribes laid hands on the apostles and took them before the council4 ,and they threatened them to preach no more in the name of ,jesus4 ,but ,peter and ,john answered3 ,judge ye whether it be right to hearken unto you rather than unto ,god4 ,afterward they concluded to kill the apostles2 but ,gamaliel1 a ,pharisee1 who was held in honor of all the people1 arose and said unto them3 ,refrain from these men1 and let them alone3 ,for if this counsel be of men1 it will be overthrown3 but if it is of ,god1 ye will not be able to overthrow them4 ,to him they agreed1 yet beat they the apostles1 and charged them not to speak in the name of ,jesus4 ,and the apostles departed from the council1 rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer for the ,name2 and they ceased not to preach ,jesus ,christ4 7,acts #c-e47 #aja4 ,stephen ,when the congregation increased the apostles said3 ,choose seven men as overseers for the poor1 for it is not fit that we should forsake the ,word of ,god and serve tables4 ,and the congregation chose ,stephen and six others2 and the apostles prayed and laid their hands on them4--,stephen was full of faith and power and wrought great wonders among the people4 ,and certain scribes arose and disputed with ,stephen4 ,and they were not able to withstand the wisdom and the spirit with which he spoke4 ,then they seized him and brought him before the council1 and they suborned false witnesses1 who said3 ,we have heard him speak blasphemous words against the temple and against ,moses4 ,stephen made a speech and showed that the ,jews had always resisted ,god4 ,when they heard this1 they were enraged2 but ,stephen looked steadfastly up into heaven and said3 ,behold1 ,i see the heavens opened1 and the ,son of ,man standing on the right hand of ,god4 ,but they rushed upon him and cast him out of the city and stoned him4 ,but ,stephen prayed3 ,lord ,jesus1 receive my spirit4 ,and he kneeled down and cried with a loud voice3 ,lord1 lay not this sin to their charge4 ,and when he had said this1 he fell asleep4 ,those who stoned ,stephen laid down their garments at the feet of a young ,pharisee named ,saul4 ,and ,saul was consenting unto his death4 7,acts #f-g47 ,stephen is the apostles from the beginning preached only to the ,jews2 for it was not yet clear to them that heathens had the same access to the kingdom of ,god as the ,jews4 ,one day1 as ,peter was sitting on the flat roof of a house1 praying1 he saw a vision3 ,he saw a vessel1 like a great sheet1 come down from heaven1 and in the sheet were all kinds of unclean animals1 and a voice said to him3 ,rise1 ,peter2 kill and eat4 ,but ,peter answered3 ,not so1 ,lord1 for ,i have never eaten anything unclean4 ,the voice said3 ,what ,god hath cleansed1 make not thou unclean4 ,and this was done thrice1 and the vessel was taken up to heaven4 ,while ,peter was perplexed what the vision might mean1 messengers came from a heathen1 ,cornelius by name4 ,and ,peter went with them1 and preached to ,cornelius and his household4 ,and while he was preaching1 the ,holy ,spirit fell upon all who heard the word4 ,then ,peter said3 ,can any man forbid the water that these should not be baptized that have received the ,holy ,spirit1 as well as we8 ,and he commanded that they be baptized in the name of ,jesus ,christ4 ,when the brethren in ,jerusalem heard this1 they said3 ,then unto the gentiles also hath ,god granted repentance unto life4 7,acts #aj1 #aa3a-ah47 #ajc4 ,paul ,saul was breathing threatening and slaughter against the ,christians1 and received from the high priest letters to go to ,damascus and seize all them that were of the ,christian faith1 both men and women1 and bring them bound to ,jerusalem4 ,when he drew nigh unto ,damascus1 there suddenly shone round about him a light from heaven4 ,he fell upon the earth and heard a voice1 saying3 ,saul1 ,saul1 why persecutest thou me8 ,i am ,jesus1 whom thou persecutest4 ,it is hard for thee to kick against the goad6 ,saul asked3 ,what wilt thou1 ,lord1 that ,i should do8 ,the ,lord answered3 ,arise1 and enter into the city1 and it shall be told thee what thou must do4 ,saul rose up2 he was blind1 and had to be led by the hand4 ,there was in ,damascus a ,christian named ,ananias4 ,the ,lord said to him in a vision3 ,go to ,saul that he may receive his sight4 ,ananias answered3 ,i have heard of this man1 how much evil he did to ,thy saints at ,jerusalem1 and to all that call upon ,thy name4 ,the ,lord said3 ,go2 for he is a chosen vessel unto me1 to bear my name before the ,gentiles and kings and the children of ,israel4 ,and ,ananias went1 and laid his hands upon him4 ,and straightway there fell as it were scales from his eyes1 and he received his sight and was baptized4 ,and straightway in the synagogues he proclaimed ,jesus1 that ,he is the ,son of ,god4 ,later on he was called ,paul1 and was acknowledged by the other apostles as a fellow-apostle2 and by the grace of ,god he labored more than the other apostles4 ,he made three great journeys1 going far abroad1 and is called the ,apostle of the ,gentiles4 ,at ,antioch in ,syria he preached for a whole year1 and it was here the believers were first called ,christians4 ,he proceeded to ,greece1 ,europe1 and the ,word made good progress1 and he strengthened the converts by the letters he wrote to the churches4 ,but the ,jews persecuted him in every place1 and when he1 after his third journey1 came to ,jerusalem1 they laid hold on him and would kill him2 but the ,roman governor sent him to ,rome to be judged by the emperor1 to whom ,paul had appealed2 for he was a ,roman citizen4 ,the emperor ,nero acquitted him1 and it is told that he undertook a fourth missionary journey4 ,during his absence ,nero began the first great persecution against the ,christians4 ,when ,paul came back from his last journey1 he was beheaded at ,rome1 at the same time that ,peter was crucified 7about sixty-seven years after the birth of ,christ47 7,acts #i1 #ac-bh47 #ajd4 ,the ,destruction of ,jerusalem ,the ,lord had foretold that there should not be left one stone upon another in ,jerusalem4 ,this was fulfilled in this way3 ,the ,romans set cruel governors over the country1 and at last the ,jews concluded that it was better for all to die at once than to be killed one by one4 ,they revolted1 and defended themselves with great bravery4 ,titus1 who later on became emperor1 came against ,jerusalem with an army1 and surrounded the city on all sides4 ,it was at the time of the ,passover1 and a great multitude of ,jews from all countries had come to ,jerusalem to keep the feast4 ,the famine became so terrible that a mother is said to have slaughtered her own child for food4 ,over one million of ,jews are said to have perished during the siege1 and about one hundred thousand were taken prisoners4 ,titus crucified multitudes of them1 others were sold into slavery1 or made to fight with wild animals for the amusement of the ,romans4 ,titus had commanded that the temple be spared2 but a soldier threw a firebrand into it1 and it was consumed4 ,this happened about seventy years after the birth of ,christ4--,josephus1 a leader of the ,jews1 has told about the destruction of ,jerusalem4 ,he was taken prisoner and was with ,titus to the end of the war4 ,the ,christians believed the prophecy of the ,lord and left the city before ,titus surrounded it4 ,since that time the ,jews have been scattered through all lands4 ,the ,lord has promised that even they once shall repent1 and believe on ,him1 the crucified ,redeemer4 #aje4 ,the ,apostle ,john ,of all the other apostles it is stated that they suffered martyrdom1 except ,john1 who died a natural death in the city of ,ephesus1 one hundred years old2 and he thus survived the destruction of ,jerusalem4 ,he was for some years exiled to the island of ,patmos1 but was afterwards permitted to return to ,ephesus4 ,he has been called the ,apostle of ,love1 as ,paul has been called the ,apostle of ,faith4 ,it is told of ,john that when he was very old1 and could no longer walk to the assemblies of the ,christians he was carried thither1 and said each time only these words3 ,my children1 love one another6 #ajf4 ,the ,writings of the ,new ,testament ,that part of the ,bible called the ,new ,testament contains twenty-seven writings1 which have been written either by vision1 which he had on the island of ,patmos1 and in which the struggle and victory of the kingdom of ,god is described4 ,,brief ,,outline of the ,history of the ,church after the ,death of the ,apostles #a4 ,progress of ,christianity4 ,the ,christians are ,persecuted ,at the time of ,christ all the countries around the ,mediterranean ,sea were ruled by the ,roman emperor4 ,the ,romans1 and still more the ,greeks1 who were subject to them1 excelled all other peoples at that time in science and arts4 ,but they were heathens1 and did not know the true ,god4 ,many had1 however1 lost faith in their own gods1 and began to look about for salvation elsewhere4 ,and with these the ,gospel speedily found entrance4 ,paul had established ,christian congregations in ,macedonia and ,greece2 and even in ,rome there was a large congregation4 ,about one hundred years after the death of ,christ there were congregations throughout the ,roman empire4 ,but heathenism was still very powerful1 and many ridiculed the faith of the ,christians1 that ,one who had been crucified should be the ,savior of the world1 and sit at the right hand of ,god1 and should return to judge the quick and the dead4 ,they did not confine themselves to ridicule2 many of the emperors permitted the ,christians to worship their ,lord and ,savior in peace2 but others persecuted them cruelly1 as ,nero had persecuted them in the days of the apostles4 ,for about two hundred and fifty years the ,christians were exposed to persecutions1 and many were those who suffered death for ,christ's sake4 ,polycarp1 who in his youth had heard the apostle ,john1 was in his old age bishop of ,smyrna1 in ,asia ,minor4 ,he was brought before the ,roman governor1 who promised him his liberty if he would curse ,christ4 ,but he answered3 ,eighty and six years have ,i served ,him1 and ,he never did me aught but good2 how can ,i then curse ,him1 my ,lord and my ,savior8 ,the governor threatened to cast him before wild beasts4 ,but ,polycarp remained steadfast4 ,he was sentenced to be burned alive1 and he ascended the pyre1 praising the ,lord who found him worthy to suffer the death of a martyr4 ,many both men and women remained steadfast during the tortures4 ,many heathens who beheld this were awakened to forsake their idols and believe on that ,lord who could inspire ,his believers with such courage4 ,and thus the persecutions served to open many hearts for ,christianity4 #b4 ,constantine the ,great ,constantine1 who has been called the ,great1 became emperor over the whole ,roman empire in the year of our ,lord #cbc4 ,he was friendly toward ,christianity1 and proclaimed full religious liberty1 so persecutions now ceased in all ,roman countries4 ,on his deathbed he confessed ,christianity and was baptized4 ,in his time magnificent churches were erected1 and the clergy came to great influence and honor4 ,unfortunately he gave the ,church1 and especially the clergy1 too many privileges1 and helped to advance the power of the bishops4 ,in the course of time this became more and more destructive to the ,church4 ,at the time of ,constantine there arose in ,alexandria1 in ,egypt1 a heretic by the name of ,arius4 ,he taught that ,christ was not from eternity1 but had a beginning1 at the beginning of time1 and was consequently a creature4 ,alexander1 the bishop of ,arius1 defended the faith of the ,church1 that the ,son was true ,god1 begotten of the ,father from eternity1 and ,one with the ,father4 ,many took sides with ,arius1 and therefore ,constantine called a council or synod of the ,church at ,nice1 in ,asia ,minor1 in the year #cbe4 ,the ,church had at that time eighteen hundred bishops4 ,of these1 three hundred and eighteen met4 ,athanasius1 who took the part of ,alexander1 especially exerted a great influence on the meeting through his clear exposition of the ,word of ,god and by his great gift as a speaker4 ,after a discussion lasting two months ,arius was excommunicated from the ,church as a heretic teaching false doctrines4 ,his doctrine nevertheless found adherents for about three hundred years1 and even at the present time we meet with them4 ,the ,church had to resist other heretics in subsequent times4 #c4 ,mohammed ,southeast of ,palestine the large peninsula of ,arabia is situated4 ,here lived about the year #fjj a man named ,mohammed4 ,he was a merchant1 who for the sake of commerce visited many countries1 and became acquainted with both the ,jewish and the ,christian religion4 ,he was a clever man1 and had great gifts as a speaker4 ,he determined to start a new religion1 composed partly of what he had heard and partly of his own inventions4 ,he pretended1 perhaps imagined1 that the angel ,gabriel had appeared to him in a cave1 and had instructed him what to teach4 ,his chief doctrine was3 ,there is one ,god1 and ,mohammed is his prophet4 ,god had sent many prophets into the world1 such as ,moses and ,christ2 but ,mohammed was the last and the greatest4 ,he promised his followers a paradise of sensual pleasures4 ,there was at this time a great deal of division in the ,church1 and no single country was powerful enough to resist the ,arabians4 ,at the time of ,mohammed's death he ruled over all of ,arabia2 and his successors1 called ,caliphs1 conquered many countries in ,asia and ,africa1 and they nearly exterminated ,christianity where they came into power4 ,the ,arabians penetrated even into ,europe1 and conquered ,spain1 where they existed for about eight centuries4 ,the teachings of ,mohammed are contained in a book called the ,koran4 ,his adherents are called ,mohammedans4 ,the ,turks are ,mohammedans1 but have taken the power from the ,arabians1 and the sultan of ,turkey1 residing in ,constantinople1 is years1 surrounded by many dangers4 ,he has been called the ,apostle of the ,north4 ,it took1 however1 a long time before ,christianity was firmly established in these countries4 ,in olden times the people of ,norway1 as well as of ,denmark and ,sweden1 were heathens2 their gods were called ,asas4 ,but at the time when ,christianity reached ,norway1 the faith in ,odin and ,thor was not very firm4 ,many believed in nothing but their own strength4 ,it is thus told about ,king ,harald the ,fairhaired1 that he placed no trust in the ,asas1 but 8believed in that god who was the strongest1 and had made all and ruled over all40 ,the ,northmen who first heard anything about ,christ were ,vikings1 who sailed west and south on their robbing expeditions4 ,some of these were baptized1 many only in order to receive the presents that were given those who were baptized4 ,but such ,christianity as this had no power1 and we hear nothing of any efforts on their part to spread it when they came home4 ,the ,norse chief1 ,helge the ,lean1 who had been brought up in ,ireland in the ,christian faith1 and later resided in ,iceland1 continued in his faith in ,christ2 but when he was on the sea or in danger he turned to ,thor4 ,haakon the ,good1 who in ,england had been brought up in the ,christian faith1 wished to introduce it into ,norway1 when he was made king4 ,he even got some priests from ,england and built some churches2 but the people of ,trondhjem opposed his efforts1 and ,haakon himself was forced to sacrifice to the gods4 ,haakon the ,earl was the last heathen ruler of ,norway4 ,he believed so strongly in the power of the old gods that during the battle with the ,jomsvikings he sacrificed his own son to obtain victory4 ,in an insurrection he was killed by his own slave1 and ,olav ,trygveson became king4 ,he had accepted ,christianity during one of his sea expeditions1 and had been baptized4 ,he was zealous for the progress of the faith1 and traveled through the country to ,christianize the people4 ,where this could not be accomplished with leniency1 force was employed4 ,several who resisted baptism were tortured to death4 ,he introduced ,christianity in ,iceland1 the ,faroe ,islands and ,greenland1 but did not reign long enough over ,norway to accomplish his purpose there4 ,when he had reigned five years1 he fell in the battle at ,svolder1 in the year #ajjj4 ,olav ,haraldson1 afterwards known as ,saint ,olav1 introduced ,christianity throughout ,norway4 ,on one of his ,viking expeditions he had been converted and baptized4 ,he was of an earnest character1 and ,christianity made a deep impression on his mind4 ,he resolved to ,christianize the whole country1 and for that reason went from one district to another1 building churches and installing priests4 ,according to the custom of the times he often employed cruel means4 ,the people were provoked and rose in rebellion1 and ,olav fled to ,gardarike1 or ,russia4 ,from thence he returned after a time with an army1 and treated the people with great kindness1 but they met him with a superior force at ,stiklestad1 where ,olav was killed after a great slaughter1 in the year #ajcj4 ,he had then been king for about sixteen years4--,miracles were soon reported to have been wrought by his corpse1 and after a few years he was canonized as a saint4 ,his bones were put in a shrine1 which afterwards was placed on the altar of the cathedral at ,trondhjem1 where they remained until the time of the ,reformation4 ,pilgrimages were made to this relic from far and near2 pilgrimages belonged to the superstitions of the times4 #e4 ,the ,popes1 ,the ,monks ,the bishop of ,rome soon became the most powerful among the bishops and was called pope1 that is1 papa 7father74 ,some popes were pious1 ,god-fearing men1 who were zealous for the advancement of ,god's kingdom on earth2 others endeavored only to extend their own power and importance2 and some were downright wicked4 ,the popes claimed and claim to this day that they are the representatives of ,christ on earth4 ,they made the claim that ,christ had placed ,peter over the other apostles and over the whole ,christian ,church4 ,furthermore1 that ,peter was the first bishop in ,rome1 and that his power was inherited by the following bishops4 ,as the vicegerents of ,christ they1 of course1 must be infallible in doctrine2 but they have nevertheless often advanced doctrines that were only human opinions1 and even in direct opposition to the ,scriptures4 ,they established the doctrine to worship the virgin ,mary and other dead men and women1 and canonized them as saints4 ,they claimed that these saints prevailed greatly with ,god1 and therefore prayers must be offered to them for intercession and help4 ,these saints were said through works of penitence and good deeds to have done not only enough to be saved themselves1 but to have had a surplus of holiness4 ,this treasure of sanctity the popes had a right to dispose of1 and could even sell it for money4 ,thus arose the horrible sale of indulgences4 ,baptism and the old confession of faith1 or the three ,articles of ,faith1 remained unchanged2 but the ,lord's ,supper had been greatly changed4 ,laymen may only eat of the bread1 but must not drink of the wine4 ,the popes tyrannized conscience and assumed the power to release any one from the oath he had sworn4 ,whosoever would not submit to the command of the pope were placed under the ban1 that is1 they were in a solemn manner excommunicated from all the blessings of the ,church and surrendered to eternal damnation4--,the worst of all was1 that the people were prohibited from reading the ,bible1 so they could not see how erroneous the doctrines of the ,church were in many respects4 ,besides the regular priesthood1 the monks were also considered servants of the ,church4 ,some of the monks dwelt alone in secluded places1 and were then called hermits4 ,others dwelt together in large buildings1 called convents or monasteries4 ,their superior is called abbot4 ,the abbot is under the control of the pope1 who thus has the monks in his service4 ,women dwelling in convents1 and in general subject to the same rules as the monks1 are called nuns4 ,their female superior is called abbess4 ,the monks were in the beginning pious and ,god-fearing men2 besides this they were industrious1 and labored for education4 ,later on they became worse1 they were indolent and riotous1 and too many of them broke their promise of chastity4 ,no one else spread so many superstitions and errors among the people as the monks4 #f4 ,the ,reformation ,the heresies of the ,church were so numerous and so great that many could not help perceiving them4 ,but the popes were for many centuries so powerful that any one who dared to oppose them would fare badly4 ,john ,huss in ,bohemia had preached against the sale of indulgences1 and was therefore burned alive at a great church meeting held in the city of ,constance1 even though the emperor had given his word that he should be permitted to depart in peace from the meeting4 ,the emperor was informed that he was under no obligation to keep his word to a heretic4 ,meanwhile more and more people began to have their eyes opened to the condition of the ,church4 ,education became greater and more extended1 for the art of printing had been invented4 ,about one hundred years after ,huss was burned1 ,martin ,luther stood forth and began that great improvement in the condition of the ,church which is called ,the ,reformation4 ,luther was born in #adhc1 of poor parents1 in the city of ,eisleben1 ,saxony1 in the center of ,germany4 ,according to the intention of his father he was to read law1 but on account of his anxiety for his soul's salvation he1 at the age of twenty-two1 entered a convent and became a monk4 ,here he faithfully performed all the requirements of a life in the convent3 prayed1 fasted and mortified his flesh2 but he could not find peace for his soul4 ,an old monk advised him to seek consolation in the old1 then almost forgotten words3 ,i believe in the forgiveness of sins4 ,these words ,luther took to heart1 and as he diligently read the ,bible and the writings of the church fathers#h1 he at last clearly saw that man is justified by faith apart from the works of the law4 ,after ,luther had been in a convent for three years1 he was called as teacher to the university at ,wittenberg4 ,hither came a hawker of indulgences1 a monk named ,tetzel1 who with the greatest audacity sold forgiveness of sins for money4 ,at this1 ,luther was filled with indignation1 and on the #cast of ,october1 #aeag1 he nailed on the door of the castle church in ,wittenberg ninety-five theses against the sale of indulgences and other errors4 ,these theses were quickly circulated throughout ,germany1 and many pious and educated men acknowledged that ,luther was right4 ,it was not ,luther's intention to attack the pope1 for he yet believed that the papacy was instituted of ,god1 and thought that when the pope should be informed of the true condition of the case1 he would grant his approval of ,luther's act4 ,but they thought differently in ,rome4 ,luther was placed under the ban of the ,church4 ,in the meantime he had diligently read the ,bible and history1 and it was clear to him the papacy was not instituted of ,god4 ,he therefore paid no attention to the ban1 but took the bull#i of the pope and burned it under an oak outside of the city of ,wittenberg4 ,he was now summoned to appear before ,charles ,v41 emperor of the ,roman empire1 at the diet held in the city of ,worms1 #aeba4 ,many dissuaded him from going2 they reminded him of the fate of ,huss2 but ,luther answered3 ,if there were as many devils in ,worms as there are tiles on the roofs1 yet would ,i go4 ,when he came to ,worms1 he was ushered into the diet1 an assembly where the emperor1 the legate of the pope and many princes and bishops were gathered4 ,it was demanded that he at once should recant everything he had taught2 but ,luther answered3 ,unless ,i am convinced by the ,scriptures1 or by clear and binding reasons1 ,i neither can nor will recant2 for it is not advisable to do anything against conscience4 ,here ,i stand2 ,i cannot do otherwise4 ,god help me6 ,amen4 ----- ,footnote #h3 ,church fathers3 ,the early teachers in the ,church4 ,footnote #i3 ,bull3 ,the writing containing the ban4 ----- ,he was now declared an outlaw1 and any one could with impunity kill him4 ,he was1 however1 permitted to leave ,worms in peace4 ,but the elector of ,saxony1 his prince and protector1 caused his own servants to seize him as he was departing1 and had him secretly carried to the castle of ,wartburg4 ,here he abode unknown for ten months1 and the world believed he was dead4 ,in this place he began his excellent translation of the ,bible into ,german1 and finished the ,new ,testament4 ,at the end of that time he returned to ,wittenberg and continued to labor by preaching and writing4 ,in #aebi he published his ,small ,catechism1 to be used in the instruction of children and youth1 and his ,larger ,catechism as an aid for the teachers4 ,luther's adherents daily became more numerous4 ,among them were many princes4 ,at the diet of ,augsburg1 in #aecj1 they laid before the emperor a confession of their faith1 written by the learned and gentle ,philip ,melanchthon1 and approved by ,luther4 ,in the ,augsburg ,confession the ,lutherans had now secured a confession1 in which they all united4 ,all who would could now see for themselves that ,luther did not teach a new doctrine1 but the old1 true ,christian faith4 ,when ,luther died1 in #aedf1 his doctrine was spread over half of ,germany1 the whole of ,denmark1 ,norway and ,sweden1 and had gained adherents in ,england1 ,france and other countries4 ,contemporaneously with ,luther1 ,ulric ,zwingli stood forth in ,switzerland against the sale of indulgences and other errors4 ,his work was continued by the ,frenchman1 ,john ,calvin4 ,calvin's adherents are called ,calvinists1 or ,reformed2 they differ from the ,lutherans in the doctrine concerning the ,lord's ,supper1 predestination and some other doctrines4 ,the ,reformed confessions are held in ,switzerland1 ,holland1 ,scotland1 ,england1 and to some extent in ,france4 ,lutherans and ,calvinists are called1 although historically improperly1 with one common name1 ,protestants1 in opposition to the adherents of the pope1 who are called ,roman ,catholics4 #g4 ,reformation ,introduced in the ,north ,hans ,tausen1 a ,danish monk1 had studied at ,wittenberg and heard ,luther4 ,on his return to ,denmark he preached the ,evangelical doctrine1 and it was adopted in #aecf as the religion of the country4 ,in about the same manner it went in ,sweden4 ,two brothers1 ,olaf and ,lars ,pehrson1 had studied in ,wittenberg1 and brought the ,evangelical faith home on their return4 ,it was in #aedd adopted as the religion of the country4 ,norway was but poorly prepared for the ,reformation4 ,education was poor4 ,a ,german monk named ,anton preached the ,evangelical doctrine in ,bergen in #aebh4 ,his preaching found favor with the citizens1 and the bishop1 an indolent man1 moved to his residence outside of the city2 but we find no account of any general awakening4 ,anton afterwards became priest in the city4 ,norway was at that time united to ,denmark4 ,when the ,reformation1 therefore1 was introduced into that country1 it was as a natural consequence established in ,norway1 in #aecg4 ,at first it found small favor with the people1 who remained ,roman ,catholic1 and in several places even used violence against the ,evangelical clergy4 ,little by little1 however1 the ,evangelical doctrine became better known and found more favor with the people4 ,this was owing more to the bishops ,geble ,pedersen in ,bergen1 ,jens ,nilsen in ,oslo and ,jrgen ,eriksen in ,stavanger than to anybody else4 ,eriksen has been called 8the ,luther of ,norway40 #h4 ,the ,lutheran ,church in the ,united ,states of ,america ,the ,lutheran ,church was transplanted to ,north ,america in the the earth which was known to the ancients4 ,it has an extent of less than six thousand square miles1 being about one twenty-second part of the size of the kingdom of ,norway4 ,it has now about three hundred and fifty thousand inhabitants1 but had formerly a great many more4 ,when ,king ,david numbered the people1 he found one million three hundred thousand who could bear arms4 ,one-fourth of a population is generally considered able to bear arms1 and the number of inhabitants at that time must have exceeded five millions4 ,the country is very mountainous4 ,to the north1 in ,syria1 is ,mount ,lebanon1 ten thousand feet at its highest1 and east of this is ,mount ,hermon4 ,lebanon was famed for its magnificent cedars4 ,from ,lebanon and ,hermon two mountain ranges extend southward through the whole length of the country1 one to the west1 the other to the east of the river ,jordan4 ,jerusalem lies two thousand five hundred feet above the ocean4 ,the river ,jordan runs two hundred miles land used to be very fruitful1 producing grain1 wine1 many kinds of fruit1 and had good pastures4 ,in the ,bible it is called 8a land flowing with milk and honey40 ,now it is entirely different4 ,the
