lacking4 ,that endearing love of tone for its own sake is frequently absent4 ,the vigorous outline of ,holbein1 the rich sobriety of ,titian1 or the permeating magic of ,leonardo find but faint echo in the work of this modern innovator4 ,with almost disdainful independence he has declined to repeat the triumphs of the great forerunners4 ,in place of their ideals he has substituted ideals which are resolutely his own4 ,however you may regard his contribution1 it is impossible not to recognize its insistent novelty4 ,once in possession of the underlying facts1 there should be no trouble in painter lunging at the canvas with sensitively poised brush4 ,all is restless1 vivid1 spontaneous4 ,one and all these creatures vibrate with the nervous tension of the age4 ,other artists have given calm1 or momentarily arrested motion4 ,sargent gives motion itself4 ,with a technique facile as it is assertive this magician of the palette1 this paganini of portraiture1 has lured us into a new world1 a world which we ourselves know well--perhaps too well--but a world hitherto undiscovered by painting40 ,art and ,common ,sense ,by ,royal ,cortizzoz ,courtesy of ,scribner ,son1 #aiac 8,sargent studying under the wing of ,carolus-,duran1 was in an atmosphere sympathetic to new ideas1 but not at all inhospitable to old ones4 ,while he emerged from his master's studio a modern in the best sense of the term1 it was with a vein of conservatism in him which has never disappeared4 ,of how many modern painters1 endowed1 as he has been1 superabundant technical brilliance1 could it be said that they have never exceeded a certain limit of audacity8 ,i know of no canvas of his which could fairly be called sensational4 ,one of the least conventional of painters1 his art nevertheless remains adjusted to the tone and movement of the world in which he lives--surely a fine example of genius expressing its age4 8,people complain that ,sargent violates the secret recesses of human vanity1 and brings hidden1 because unlovely1 traits out into the light of day2 that his candor with the brush is startling1 to say the least1 and sometimes even perilous4 ,he is accused not simply of painting his sitter1 #8wart and all1' but of exaggerating the physical or moral disfigurement4 ,if this is true there is something humorous in the spectacle1 which is constantly being presented1 of ,the broad slashing stroke of ,hals has taught him something1 it is fair to assume2 and the influence of ,velasquez in his work is sufficiently obvious4 ,yet there is not in all his painting the ghost of what it would be reasonable to call an imitative passage4 ,he is no more a modern ,hals or ,velasquez than he is a modern ,rembrandt or ,botticelli1 for he looks at life and art from a totally cosmopolitan his art is not less so4 ,it is the perfection of world-style1 the finality of method4 8,if ,i apprehend ,sargent rightly1 such theory of art as he possesses is founded in observation4 ,some fifteen years ago1 in ,gibraltar1 at the old ,cecil ,hotel1 ,i was dining with him4 ,that night1 as a very unusual thing1 ,sargent talked about painting--talked of his own volition4 ,he industry2 but he does see perhaps1 certain depression of the cheek or lines about the eyes or mouth in contractions of the lips or protrusions of the brow or jaw that appeal to him strongly because they are cast in shadow or thrown up sharply in relief of light4 ,these surface features he paints perhaps with more emphasis than they possess in the original because they appeal to him emphatically1 and presently the peculiar look that indicates the character of the man appears4 ,what the look may indicate1 or what kind of phase of character may be read in or out of the look1 the portrait-painter does not know or care4 ,he paints what he sees and has as little discernment of a character as of a mind4 ,he gives1 perhaps1 without knowing their meaning1 certain protrusions and recessions of the
