,,masque ,,is ,,dedicated ,,in ,,christmas ,,fellowship ,,preface ,always an evergreen tree points up at a star4 ,always a star looks somewhere down on the cradle of a child4 ,always1 once in the year1 a child laughs up at evergreen boughs4 ,tree1 star and child are triune in the poetry of nature--a constellation of man that never sets4 ,the antic mirth1 the nave awe of paganism1 the joy and passion of ,christianity1 are masks happy and tragic which the ,folk ,spirit of childhood has worn for ages1 and shall wear for ages more1 in ritual of a tree that never dies4 ,on the verge of ,no-,man's-,land1 where the blasted earth reels amid war's stench and thunder2 in calm cathedrals1 to carolling choirs2 by lonely chimney sides1 or amid the young1 tense assemblies of army camps1 ,christmas--this ,christmas of our new age--grows again in the ancient greenness of a little tree4 ,how may we1 too1 do it homage8 ,not forgetting the old simple merriment of folk days gone by1 how shall we say--and sing--to our tree something of that deep response which we feel to-day to the creative sadness of our time8 ,our young men are going out to the war3 our country is grappling the issue of a planet4 ,here is a dramatic conflict1 not for us as spectators1 but as participants4 ,here is a theme1 not of the traditional theatre1 but of a communal drama1 the action of which is at once a battle and a prayer4 ,how may we take part together in expressing such a theme1 at this new ,christmas time8 ,surely it must be through some simple festival--chiefly of song1 for song is elemental to us all3 a festival in which our people--young1 old1 rich1 poor1 women1 men1 but chiefly our young soldiers--may share1 outdoors or indoors1 in a ritual1 democratic and devotional1 on a scale great or small1 simple to act and symbolize3 a drama not designed for a hollow amphitheatre of spectators1 but for a level-floored cathedral of communicants3 a drama in which the goal of world liberty we battle for is clearly contrasted with its opposite1 that we ourselves may not lose sight of our goal or swerve from it1 as our common prayer1 in the midst of battle4 ,and there1 as the focus-point of our festival and symbol of it--the tree of light3 light of our own childhood and of the world's4 ,i do not know whether this simple masque will prove worthy to help in creating such a festival for our new ,christmas time--,i can only wish and hope that it may4 ,,percy ,,mackaye4 ,cornish1 ,new ,hampshire1 ,september1 #aiag4 ,,contents ,,page ,,introductory ,,dedication ix ,,preface this ,masque1 different communities will doubtless wish to observe different ways of assembling to prepare and begin its production4 ,some1 especially those given on a small scale1 may need and desire no prelusive form of ceremony1 in action1 speech or song4 ,for productions given on a larger scale1 however1 since a receptive and devotional state of feeling is greatly to be desired for its proper rendering and its impression upon those who witness and take part1 it is strongly recommended that some kind of brief1 general ,song ,overture of the people be held just before the ,masque begins4 ,with this need in mind1 the suggestions here made by the author are given for whatever service they may render to the desired end4 ,as ,prelude to the production of 8,the ,evergreen ,tree10 the following kind of ,song ,overture and informal ,ceremony are suggested for such large-scale types of the ,masque's production as are witnessed and performed by all classes1 races1 ages and creeds of the community4 ,after night-fall1 on a winter's evening1 let us imagine men1 women and children of a town or city gathered together out of doors in a public square or park1 or indoors within some level-floored structure1 to assemble by the community ,christmas ,tree1 and to join in general singing under a leader4 ,the ,leader will gather the best trained singers at a central place 7indicated by the roped-off circle in the ,ground ,plan on the page opposite71 and will start the community singing1 or guide its spontaneous beginnings under his leadership4 ,the trained ,chorus will perhaps sing the 8,adeste ,fidelis10 or 8,hark6 the ,herald ,angels ,sing10 and the carollers will raise their voices in such old ,christmas songs as may best appeal to them4 ,so1 perhaps for twenty minutes or half an hour1 the singers will hold an informal ,overture1 in which all the gathered people may have joined4 ,meanwhile1 or beforehand1 the ,chorus will have put on their outer garments of red and white 7designed according to ,mr4 ,jones' costume suggestions71 and will have divided into their two separate bodies--7#a7 the mixed voices1 ,chorus ,a1 and 7#b7 the male choir1 ,chorus ,b4 ,then the ,chorus ,leader1 or some one appointed by him1 when the ,masque is almost ready to begin1 will rise at the centre--visible above the heads of the ,chorus and the people--and will speak to the assemblage1 perhaps in his own words1 or perhaps--using some portion or all of the speech here given--he will speak substantially as follows3 ,,the ,,chorus ,,leader ,neighbors and ,friends--we have been singing together3 ,wherever friends sing together out of their hearts ,there ,god sings with them4 ,we believe many different ideas1 many differing creeds4-- ,to-night let us forget how we differ3 ,let us remember only how we believe in one great thing-- ,one ,spirit in common--and this is its holy name3 ,,singing ,,together4 ,in old1 old times1 when plays were sung by the people1 ,they built for them altars1 sacred places of singing2 ,and before their dramas began1 ,they used to pray there ,and ask a blessing on the players1 on the chorus and the people4 ,and there1 on those altars1 they wrote the name of their ,lord4 ,friends1 we are gathered here now by an old1 old altar3 ,the altar of ,song-- ,song of the people3 old1 young2 happy1 sad2 rich and poor4 ,we cannot see it with our eyes1 ,but we know it in our hearts2 ,and there we can read what is written--the name of our ,lord1 ,whose hallowed name is called ,,singing ,,together4 ,now out of our ,singing will rise an ,acted ,pageant ,to tell an old story newly-- ,the story of a ,child4 ,over yonder1 by the ,christmas ,tree--there is the ,wilderness1 ,the ,place of ,outcasts3 ,over there--is the ,gate of a ,palace3 the ,palace of ,herod-- ,herod1 the mighty king in the ,bible1 ,his place of ,empire2 ,and there--and there--are two ,paths1 that lead to the ,tree4 ,now let us sing one more carol1 ,and take our places2 ,then listen1 and watch for a sign1 while the ,chorus sings3 ,and when all is over--each of us1 all together1 ,let us raise up our hearts and voices to one great ,spirit ,that will make of us all one people3 ,the ,spirit whose glorious name is ,,singing ,,together4 ,so concluding1 the ,chorus ,leader and his ,assistant ,leader will accompany their ,choruses 7the one--,chorus ,a1 the other--,chorus ,b7 to the places where they sit during the ,masque 7indicated on the diagram7 in front of their respective stages4 ,as they go to their places1 the ,choruses will sing the carol 8,good ,king ,wencelas40 ,then1 when all is still1 the ,masque of 8,the ,evergreen ,tree0 will commence with the ,chorus of the ,wilderness4 ,,ii4--,,epilude ,at the conclusion of the ,masque1 it is not advisable that any other formal ceremony should follow4 ,the participants1 the children and the people will naturally be gathering about ,santa ,claus and partaking of the gifts from his pack1 or otherwise sharing in happy festivity4 ,in order1 however1 that the ,masque shall not end in a general1 disordered scattering of the assemblage1 it is recommended that those in costume1 including the ,choruses 7now united71 shall march in good order to the places of their costuming1 or to such other places as the ,director of the ,masque may designate1 singing together stanzas of the ,masque hymn--easily learned1 in unison1 to the appealing music of ,arthur ,farwell-- 8,glory and serenity1 ,beauty of desire1 ,bless to-night this holy tree ,and our candle-fire40--etc4 ,,three ,,monographs ,i4--,,dramatizing ,,community ,,song ,,by ,,percy ,,mackaye ,the allurement of the communal field in drama is its freshness of opportunity--its infinite potential variety4 ,definitions have not yet hedged it2 criticism has not yet charted1 nor pedagogy catalogued its boundless horizons and creative streams2 commercialism has not yet invaded its unstinted harvests1 to store and can them for the market1 under the labels of middlemen4 ,so1 in approaching this realm of 8,the ,evergreen ,tree10 ,i have felt something of that thrill of discovery which must more often have been felt in earlier days on ,american soil3 a feeling1 ,i think1 such as ,john ,muir once told me he experienced when he gazed first1 from the top of a great tree1 over uncharted miles of the redwood region4 ,only here ,i have seemed to look upon the conjoining of a great1 structural continent--the ,drama--with a primal sea--the tides of ,community ,song1 now carolling in quiet inlets1 now choral with tempestuous music from fathomless deeps4 ,if1 then1 ,i were to suggest the nature of this kind of community drama by a topographical line1 rather than by a definition of theory1 ,i would do so perhaps by a line such as this3 ,illustration wherein the rising pyramid would represent an emerging contour of that continent 7the ,drama71 whose base is submerged and fused with those singing tides 7,community ,music74 ,so perhaps1 as dramatist1 ,i might suggest the coming together of those two realms or 8movements0 of social art1 to which my friend ,arthur ,farwell refers in his comments1 as composer4 ,obviously1 this coming together implies a new technique of the community dramatist--a technique not for a hollowed amphitheatre 7that of the traditional theatre71 but for a level assembly place 7that of the cathedral73 where visually1 from a floor thronged with choral communicants1 there rises a sharp focal point of dramatic action--a small raised stage1 for such few acting characters as are typical of the community dramatic ritual4 ,so the setting of the ,masque takes form according to its nature 7as indicated by the ,ground ,plan opposite page #fi1 and by the worded description in the front of this volume74 ,and so1 as the dramatic architect by his design shapes the conditions for the coperation of the composer1 he shapes also the conditions for the coperation of the scenic producer--in this case1 ,robert ,edmond ,jones1 whose fresh and fertile genius becomes in a production as significant for the eye as the creative ardor of ,arthur ,farwell does for the ear4 ,in the following pages1 each of these representative artists describes briefly his distinctive approach and viewpoint toward the ensemble production4 ,as well as may be in brief space1 we hope thus to suggest--for all who read the ,masque with a view to its performance on however simple a scale--something of our own feelings for the right creative and interpretive approach to this fresh field1 in which we are planning to coperate personally in at least some one production of 8,the ,evergreen ,tree40 ,in the pioneering attempt of this ,masque1 my own purpose is to dramatize community singing--for conditions of our own time1 especially in ,america1 during this new1 formative period which the world war has begun4 ,in other lands and ages of folk art1 community song has been dramatized1 as it can only be dramatized vitally1 by artists moved by the spirit of religion2 and relics of such forms still survive amongst us in rituals of the churches4 ,but these rituals necessarily have attained their growth--nobly classic at their best1 at their worst--dully disintegrated4 ,now new forces of an age religiously urgent for democracy demand a re-creation of the forms of folk art1 plastic to the living currents of the new time4 ,these currents1 though continuous from the past1 widen now between strange banks and other horizons2 though perennial1 they require fresh cordination4 ,the carol1 for instance1 and the ballad--old forms of folk art--survive with us only in their archaic appeal4 ,we in ,america cannot hope or wisely desire to revive them for what they once were--spontaneous expressions of continuous communal life in villages and peasant heaths1 for that life has gone from us1 not to return4 ,but we can do this--and in so doing1 give them new life4 ,we can relate them definitely to a form of art for us still living and indigenous--to the drama1 and essentially to that community kind of drama which is but now beginning its renascence of world forms portentous for the future4 ,so in 8,the ,evergreen ,tree10 perhaps for the first time1 ,i have embodied the acted carol and the acted ballad as structural parts of a dramatic unity--a communal dramatic unity1 to which the forms of folk music are allied and essential4 ,here1 then1 comes into being a new kind of music drama--far removed from the connotation of opera--a ,song ,drama of the people4 ,from this1 speech will not be absent2 but it will necessarily be related to the simplicity of folk song and folk poetry1 in being rhythmic and chantable in its cadences--taking on forms of spoken poetry definitely related to the people's poetry of song4 ,this ,song ,drama1 too1 of its nature--though susceptible of splendid pageantry--will depend1 for its dramatic conflict1 far less on wills opposed in visual action than on contrasted emotions of song--of choral song1 thus bringing again the ,chorus back to its rightful place1 heard and visible1 among the people--as with the ,greeks2 only now for us it becomes a double ,chorus1 oppositional in will and definitely divided in two parts 7the antiphonal ,choruses1 ,a and ,b1 of this ,masque1 costumed also in visual contrast71 until its parts become reconciled in emotion1 when--both aurally and visibly--the two unite1 as at the end of 8,the ,evergreen ,tree40 ,this much at least expresses my conception of a new art implied in the present work--not as an a priori theory1 nor as a generalization for others--but as the working method which has seemed for me best adapted to perform a definite task in the community field involved4 ,the theme of the ,masque ,i will only touch upon here to say that1 in inventing its legend of ,caspar and ,claus1 ,i hope ,i may not wholly miss that unconscious approval1 which would be dearer than any other--the belief of the children4 ,cornish1 ,n4 ,h41 ,september1 #aiag4 ,,ii4--,,community ,,music ,,and ,,the ,,composer ,,by ,,arthur ,,farwell ,the birth of our national self-consciousness in music1 from the creative standpoint1 occurred less than twenty years ago4 ,not until the last two decades did the prodigious musical studies of our young people at home and abroad produce composers in sufficient quantity to make ,american music1 its character and potentialities1 a national question4 ,even so brief a period as this has1 however1 sufficed to witness a succession of distinct phases in our national musical attitude and achievement1 phases so strongly contrasted as to represent radical changes of artistic tendency and almost complete reversals in belief and direction of effort4 ,the last and greatest of these changes is that one which has withdrawn attention from the composer as an abstract phenomenon1 and from fruitless theories of ,american music1 and has centered it upon the immediate service which music can render to the people of our nation4 ,in the long run1 the nation cannot go one way and its music another4 ,that the ideal in the spirit of music must sooner or later1 in this country1 be reconciled to and wedded with the ideal of the spirit of democracy1 is an idea which has met with general acceptance only in the last three years1 although it has been ardently championed by a few individuals for nearly two decades4 ,taking its rise in the compelling necessity of this principle1 the 8community music0 movement has swept the country in the last few years1 plunging it anew into violent discussion1 annihilating personal theories and products of the musical hot-house1 demanding the wholesome and the true--and giving the people expression4 ,in this movement the composer of the music for 8,the ,evergreen ,tree0 has been immersed4 ,in the communal dramatic work and ideas of ,percy ,mac,kaye1 he has recognized a similar development in the art of the theatre4 ,it was inevitable that these two movements should come together and unite their powers in seeking to make a helpful contribution to the quest for a drama--and should it not truly be a music drama8--that shall serve most appropriately the deep need of the ,american people for expression in such a form4 ,anything which may prove to be of worth in my compositions for 8,the ,evergreen ,tree10 ,i owe to the new influx of life which ,i have received from my contact with the soul of the people1 as revealed in the movement which is making us a singing nation4 ,cornish1 ,n4 ,h41 ,september1 #aiag4 ,,iii4--,,designs ,,for 8,,the ,,evergreen ,,tree0 ,,by ,,robert ,,edmond ,,jones ,the drawings in this book will prove most helpful if they are thought
