,,america ,,preface ,,on ,september #ab1 #aibc--;as this was the birthday of both ,alfred ,knopf and ,henry ,mencken1 ,i readily recall the date--my friend ,sherrill ,schell hailed me on the telephone to request me to examine some drawings by a ,mexican boy who had recently arrived in ,new ,york4 ,he has nothing to show editors but caricatures of ,mexicans1 unknown here4 ,if you like his designs1 ,i thought perhaps you might introduce him to some ,new ,york subjects4 ,now any person in public life is the object of at least one such appeal every week of his career1 and it is usually a waste of time to listen to it4 ,usually1 as a matter of fact1 one does not listen4 ,in this instance1 however1 whether by chance1 or whether because ,sherrill ,schell had never before asked me to do anything for himself or anybody else1 ,i bade him bring the young man to my apartment that afternoon at five4 ,schell arrived at the appointed hour1 accompanied by what appeared to be a youth just out of the adolescent stage1 so shy1 indeed1 that he immediately began to bombard me with a volley of quite unrecognizable ,english4 ,nevertheless1 ,i was able to pick out a few words1 enough to gather that he had recently been stopping somewhere in ,mexico with ,witter ,bynner and ,d4 ,h4 ,lawrence4 ,why1 ,i demanded1 didn't you draw them8 ,his abashment was complete3 he confessed that he was unaware that these fellows were celebrated6 ,i gently tugged at the portfolio that ,miguel ,covarrubias hugged under his arm1 which1 in his modesty1 he had not voluntarily relinquished1 and proceeded to scan the contents4 ,although ,i found myself ignorant of the very names of the subjects1 with the single exception of ,ramon del ,valle-,inclan 7and ,i had no idea what he looked like71 ,i was immediately convinced that ,i stood in the presence of an amazing talent1 if not1 indeed1 genius4 ,that afternoon he made the sketches for his caricature of me1 delivered two days later1 the first1 ,i think1 of this ,new ,york series4 ,that afternoon1 too1 ,i began to use the telephone in his behalf1 and for the next few days ,i made appointments for him to meet ,h4 ,l4 ,mencken1 ,waldo ,frank1 ,avery ,hopwood1 ,eva ,le ,gallienne1 and a great many others4 ,i also introduced him to ,ralph ,barton who1 with unselfish admiration for the rare gifts of this rival caricaturist1 rendered him invaluable aid and encouragement4 ,as soon as ,covarrubias had drawn a few local faces ,i invited him to join me one day for lunch at the ,algonquin where he was acclaimed at once1 held1 indeed1 almost a reception4 ,from that moment he was launched--as ,i knew he would be3 one glance at his drawings sufficed to exhibit indelible proof of his prowess4 ,from the beginning ,i was amazed at his ability to size up a person on a blank sheet of paper at once3 there was a certain clairvoyance in this4 ,i had believed1 hitherto1 that it was necessary for a caricaturist to study his subject for some time before he touched pen to paper4 ,covarrubias1 at least so far as his own work was concerned1 effectively demolished this belief4 ,speaking ,english imperfectly1 a newcomer to this country1 frequently he was actually ignorant as to whether his model was actor1 painter1 or author4 ,in spite of this handicap1 or because of it1 his caricatures almost invariably go deeply behind the mere sculptural formation of the face4 ,they are often a complete criticism of a personality4 ,moreover1 the artist does not depend on ridiculous collocations of figures or witty captions1 in the manner of ,max ,beerbohm1 for his effects4 ,his arrangement of the lines of the face alone tells the story1 occasionally1 it must be admitted1 a cruel story4 ,there is1 of course1 a sequel to this history of our first encounter a little more than a year ago4 ,at the present moment1 ,miguel ,covarrubias is about as well known in ,new ,york as it would be possible for any one to be4 ,in fact1 when ,i desire to meet any celebrated person nowadays1 my instinct suggests at once that ,covarrubias is the man who can most easily manage the introduction4 ,on the whole1 therefore1 ,i fancy it would be more appropriate for him to draw a frontispiece for a book of mine than for me to furnish this poor preface for this brilliant book of his4 ,i think1 in compensation1 ,i'll ask him to do it6 ,,carl ,,van
