impressed by its appropriateness1 its wisdom1 and valuable practical advice2 and believing that such a sermon should be within the reach of all the colored people of this ,district and the ,united herewith a copy of the discourse preached last ,sunday in the ,ebenezer ,chapel1 ,georgetown1 ,d4 ,c4 ,it is identically the same in all its parts4 ,i have amplified some of its thoughts1 and added three or four notes1 which ,i think valuable and useful4 ,that its teachings may be productive of good to those for whom it was prepared1 and bring glory to ,him1 who is ,high over all and blessed for ever1 is the fervent prayer of ,your humble servant1 ,,daniel ,a4 ,,payne4 ,to ,,rev4 ,,james ,,lynch and others4 ,,welcome ,,to ,,the ,,ransomed1 ,,or1 ,duties of the ,colored ,inhabitants of the ,district of ,columbia4 ,i4 ,,tim4 #b1 #a-d4 ,illustration ,st4 ,paul addressed the ,epistles to ,timothy1 the young ,bishop of ,ephesus1 for the purpose of giving him instructions touching the false doctrines inculcated by certain false teachers1 as well as instructions respecting the qualifications of the ,christian ministry1 their duties to themselves1 to ,god1 and the flock committed by the ,holy ,spirit to their special guidance4 ,but foremost of all the duties which he enjoined upon the ,ephesian ministry and laity were those of making 8,supplications1 prayers1 intercessions1 and giving of thanks for all men40 ,for men in general1 embracing the whole family of ,adam1 in all their varieties as nations1 tribes1 communities1 peoples4 ,this is ,god-like1 because the ,eternal loves all1 and manifests the infinity of his nature1 by his universal care for all mankind4 ,in this1 ,he also demonstrates ,his universal ,fatherhood1 and thereby establishes the brotherhood of man4 ,but guided by the benevolence of unerring wisdom1 the ,apostle descends from a general to a particular statement of the case1 and commands us to single out from among the nations of the earth their chieftains, kings and authoritiesfor whom we are to make special 8,supplications1 prayers1 intercessions1 and giving of thanks40 ,to the cheerful and fervent performance of this gracious work1 he presses several motives upon us8that we may live a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty0because 8it is good and acceptable in the sight of ,god our ,saviour0because ,god 8will have all men to be saved and to come unto the knowledge of the truth40 ,let us briefly trace out this line of thought4 ,to supplicate1 is to implore ,god submissively4 ,to pray to ,god1 is to adore ,him for ,his glorious perfection1 to confess our sins to ,him1 and to beseech ,him for mercy and pardon4 ,to intercede with ,god is to entreat ,him by the fervent1 effectual prayer of faith1 to be reconciled to offending man4 ,this we may do as well for our enemies as for our friends4 ,we are gathered to celebrate the emancipation1 yea1 rather1 the ,redemption of the enslaved people of the ,district of ,columbia1 the exact number of whom we have no means of ascertaining1 because1 since the benevolent intention of ,congress became manifest1 many have been removed by their owners beyond the reach of this beneficent act4 ,our pleasing task then1 is to welcome to the ,churches1 the homesteads1 and circles of free colored ,americans1 those who remain to enjoy the boon of holy ,freedom4 ,brethren1 sisters1 friends1 we say welcome to our ,churches1 welcome to our homesteads1 welcome to our social circles4 ,enter the great family of ,holy ,freedom2 not to lounge in sinful indolence1 not to degrade yourselves by vice1 nor to corrupt society by licentiousness1 neither to offend the laws by crime1 but to the enjoyment of a well regulated liberty1 the offspring of generous laws2 of law as just as generous1 as righteous as justa liberty to be perpetuated by equitable law1 and sanctioned by the divine2 for law is never equitable1 righteous1 just1 until it harmonizes with the will of ,him1 who is 8,king of kings1 and ,lord of lords10 and who commanded ,israel to have but one law for the home-born and the stranger4 ,we repeat ourselves1 welcome then ye ransomed ones2 welcome not to indolence1 to vice1 licentiousness1 and crime1 but to a well-regulated liberty1 sanctioned by the ,divine1 maintained by the ,human law4 ,welcome to habits of industry and thriftto duties of religion and pietyto obligations of law1 order1 governmentof government divine1 of government human3 these two1 though not one1 are inseparable4 ,the man who refuses to obey divine law1 will never obey human laws4 ,the divine first1 the human next4 ,the latter is the consequence of the former1 and follows it as light does the rising sun4 ,we invite you to our ,churches1 because we desire you to be religious2 to be more than religious2 we urge you to be godly4 ,we entreat you to never be content until you are emancipated from sin1 from sin without1 and from sin within you4 ,but this kind of freedom is attained only through the faith of ,jesus1 love for ,jesus1 obedience to ,jesus4 ,as certain as the ,american ,congress has ransomed you1 so certain1 yea1 more certainly has ,jesus redeemed you from the guilt and power of sin by his own precious blood4 ,as you are now free in body1 so now seek to be free in soul and spirit1 from sin and ,satan4 ,the noblest freeman is he whom ,christ makes free4 ,we invite you to our homesteads1 in order that we may aid you as well by the power of good examples as by the beauty of holy precept1 in raising up intelligent1 virtuous1 pious1 happy families4 ,we invite you to our social circles1 in order that you may have none of those inducements which grow out of a mere love of society1 to frequent the gambling hells1 and groggeries1 which gradually lead their votaries to infamy and the pit that is bottomless4 ,permit us1 also1 to advise you to seek every opportunity for the cultivation of your minds4 ,to the adults we say1 enter the ,sunday ,schools and the ,night ,schools1 so opportunely opened by ,dr4 ,pierson1 in behalf of the ,american ,tract ,society4 ,in these latter you can very soon learn to read the precious word of ,god1 even before you shall have a familiar knowledge of the letters which constitute the alphabet4 ,rest not till you have learned to read the ,bible4 ',tis the greatest1 the best of books4 ,in it is contained the ,divine law4 ,o6 meditate therein by day and by night1 for 8the law of the ,lord is perfect1 converting the soul2 the testimony of the ,lord is sure1 making wise the simple2 the statutes of the ,lord are right1 rejoicing the heart2 the commandment of the ,lord is pure1 enlightening the eyes2more to be desired are they than gold1 yea1 than much fine gold2 sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb40 8,in keeping of them there is great reward40 ,yield uniform1 implicit obedience to their teachings4 ,they will purify your hearts and make them the abodes of the ,ever-,blessed ,trinity4 ,when you shall have reached this point1 you will be morally prepared to recognize and respond to all the relations of civilized and christianized life4 ,but of the children take special care4 ,heaven has entrusted them to you for a special purpose4 ,what is that purpose8 ,not merely to eat and to drink1 still less to gormandize4 ,not merely to dress finely in broadcloths1 silks1 satins1 jewelry1 nor to dance to the sound of the tambourine and fiddle2 but to learn them how to live and how to dieto train them for great usefulness on earthto prepare them for greater glory in heaven4 ,keep your children in the schools1 even if you have to eat less1 drink less and wear coarser raiments2 though you eat but two meals a day1 purchase but one change of garment during the year1 and relinquish all the luxuries of which we are so fond1 but which are as injurious to health and long life as they are pleasing to the taste4 ,let the education of your children penetrate the heart4,that education which forgets1 or purposely omits1 the culture of the heart1 is better adapted to devilism than manhood4 ,but the education which reaches the heart1 moulds it1 humbles it before the ,cross1 is rather the work of the homestead than the common school or the college4 ,it is given by the parents rather than the schoolmasterby the mother rather than the father4 ,how important1 then1 that the mothers be right-minded2 that our young women1 of whom our mothers come1 be brought up with a high sense of personal characterbe taught to prefer virtue to gold1 and death itself rather than a violated chastity4 ,the women make the men2 therefore the women should be greater than the men1 in order that they be the mothers of great men4 ,i mean good men1 for none are great who are not good4 ,but this requires the transforming grace of ,god2 requires that our mothers be women of strong faith and fervent daily prayers2 requires that they live beneath the wings of the ,cherubimat the foot of the ,crossloving the ,god-man 8whose favor is life1 and whose loving kindness is better than life40 ,such mothers will care for the heart education of their children1 and will consequently lay continuous siege to the ,throne of ,god in behalf of their sons and daughters1 even as the ,syrophnician mother importuned the compassionate ,jesus in behalf of her afflicted daughter1 or as ,queen ,esther did ,ahasuerus in behalf of her menaced kinsmen4 ,such mothers will carefully train their children1 as ,moses was trained by his mother1 preserving him pure from the vices of a ,court and the baneful examples of lordly superiors3 or1 like ,susanna ,wesley1 will educate their sons1 as she did ,john and ,charles1 in the atmosphere of such spiritual excellence1 and with such a moral power1 as will make them ministering angels of good to man and glory to ,god ,most ,high4 ,lastly, let us advise you respecting money4 ,some people value it too much1 others too little4 ,of these extremes take the medium2 for money has its proper value4 ,that value lies in its adaptedness to promote the ends of ,christian enlightenment2 to purchase the best medical aid and other comforts in the days of affliction2 to administer to the wants of old age1 and to enable us to assist in making mankind wiser and better4 ,but how are we to get money8 ,get it by diligent labor4 ,work1 work1 work6 ,shun no work that will bring you an honest penny4 ',tis honorable to labor with our own hands4 ,god works1 and shall man be greater than ,god8 ,fools only think labor dishonorable4 ,wise men feel themselves honored in following the example of ,god1 whose works adorn and bless both heaven and earth4 ,but when you get the pennies save them4 ,then you will soon have dollars4 ,the dollars will enable you to buy comfortable homes for yourselves and your children4 ,you can save your penniesyea1 dollarsif you will run away from whiskey1 rum and tobacco4 ,a few years ago an intelligent minister said that the colored people of the ,district of ,columbia spent ten thousand dollars a year for tobacco4,what a sum for poison6 ,better take that money to build churches and school houses2 better take it to obtain and pay thoroughly educated teachers for your pulpits and your school housesthe schoolmasters as well as the preachers4 ,work for money2 work every day1 work diligently1 and save your money when you get it4 ,be obliging and faithful to your employers1 and you will be sure to keep your places4 ,never be above your business4,many a man has ruined himself and his family by this foolish pride4 ,ever since the first stone in the foundations of the ,universe was laid by ,god's own hand till now1 he has been working1 and will continue working through endless ages4 ,follow his glorious example4 ,work1 work1 work1 for an honest penny2 but when you get it1 pause and think three times before you spend it2 but when you spend it1 be sure it will yield a permanent benefit4 ,that the hearty welcome which we have given you1 our ransomed kinsmen1 may be rendered a blessing1 and that the advices which we have tendered may be as good seed sown in good ground1 we shall continue to make supplications1 prayers1 intercessions and thanksgivings to ,him whose care reaches all1 because ,his love embraces all4 ,to ,him we commend you1 ,o ye who are now as sheep without a shepherdas exiles in the land of your nativity4 ,may ,he who led ,abraham1 ,isaac and ,jacob1 as they wandered over ,canaan and ,egypt1 guide1 protect and bless you2 raise up kind1 influential friends to do you good2 and when the purposes of his grace shall have been accomplished in you1 may you be able1 like ,jacob1 to say3 8,with my staff ,i passed over this ,jordan1 and now ,i am become two bands40 ,now1 if we ask1 who has sent us this great deliverance8 ,the answer shall be1 the ,lord2 the ,lord ,god ,almighty1 the ,god of ,abraham and ,isaac and ,jacob4 ,but as ,he blessed the chosen seed1 by the ministry of men and angels1 so in our case1 the angels of mercy1 justice and liberty1 hovering over the towering ,capitol1 inspired the heads and hearts of the noble men who have plead the cause of the poor1 the needy and enslaved1 in the ,senate and ,house of ,representatives4 ,for the oppressed and enslaved of all peoples1 ,god has raised up1 and will continue to raise up1 his ,moses and ,aaron4 ,sometimes the hand of the ,lord is so signally displayed that ,moses and ,aaron are not recognized4 ,seldom do they recognize themselves4 ,there was neither bow1 spear1 nor shield1 in the hand of ,israel1 when the ,lord led him forth from ,egypt1 so also1 there was no weapon of offence nor defence in your hands when this ransom was brought you4 8,great and marvelous are thy works1 ,lord ,god ,almighty1 just and true are thy ways1 thou ,king of ,saints4 ,who shall not fear thee1 ,o ,lord1 and glorify thy name8 ,we praise thee1 we bless thee1 we worship thee1 we glorify thee1 we give thanks to thee for thy great glory4 ,o ,lord ,god1 ,heavenly ,king1 ,god the ,father ,almighty40 ,thou1 ,o ,lord1 and thou alone couldst have moved the heart of this ,nation to have done so great a deed for this weak1 despised and needy people6 ,we will1 therefore1 make supplications1 prayers1 intercessions1 and thanksgivings1 for 8,all that are in authority40 ,the duty of supplications in behalf of the ,government is rendered more binding upon us1 when we consider the circumstances under which it was written4 ,st4 ,paul lived under the reign of ,nero1 the bloody emperor1 who having set ,rome on fire1 amused himself with drinking and music while the city was in flames2 and afterwards1 accused the ,christians of the crime which he himself had committed1 thereby causing many of them to be put to death in the most cruel manner4 ,now1 if it was the duty of the ancient ,christians to pray for such monsters of wickedness1 by how much more is it our duty to pray for a ,christian ,government4 ,congress need our supplications1 they shall have them4 ,the ,president and his ,cabinet need our prayers1 they shall possess them4 ,the ,supreme ,court1 that awful emblem of impartial justice1 need our intercessions1 it shall not be forgotten4 ,upon all these departments of law1 authority and power1 we shall beseech the ,god of ,nations to send the spirit of wisdom1 justice1 libertyof wisdom seeing the end from the beginningof justice incorruptibleof liberty governed by righteous law4 ,to make supplications1 prayers1 intercessions1 and thanksgiving for these authorities1 is the peculiar privilege of the ,colored ,people in the ,united ,states4 ,they are not permitted1 as in the days of the ,revolution and the war of #ahab1 to take up arms in defence of the ,government4 ,some1 both among ,anglo-,saxons and ,anglo-,africans1 complain of this prohibition4 ,for my part1 ,i am glad of it1 because ,i think ,i see the hand of ,god in it4 ,the present war is a kind of family quarrel4 ,therefore1 let a stranger take heed how he meddles1 lest both parties unite to drive him out of the house4 8,why shouldst thou meddle to thy hurt80 ,but we can wield a power in behalf of the ,government which neither rifled cannon1 nor mortar1 nor rocket-battery can assail1 nor bomb-proof walls resist4 ,that power is the right arm of ,godof ,god1 who lifts up and casts down nations according as they obey1 or disregard the principles of truth1 justice1 liberty4 ,the service of prayer which is required from us1 contemplates the most difficult as well as the noblest objects4 ,it contemplates the end of the war4 ,it contemplates legislation before and after the end4 ,now1 to manage this war1 so as to bring permanent good to all concerned1 requires more than human wisdommore than human power4 ,to legislate so as to make the masses see and feel that the laws are just1 wise1 beneficial1 demand more than human learning or skill in government4 ,to determine the sense and just application of these laws as ,judgesto execute them faithfully and impartially as a ,chief ,magistrate1 ,o how much of the spirit of ,god is needful6 ,how much in the ,president6 how much in his ,cabinet6 ,then there is the army4 ,let us not forget the brave men who constitute itwho have left their comfortable homes1 beloved families1 fond parents1 affectionate sisters and brothers1 for the hardships1 dangers and painful deaths of the battle field4 ,let us pray that1 as some of them are1 so all may become1 soldiers of the ,cross2 so that such as are doomed to fall in the fight1 may rise from their gory beds to obtain a crown of life2 and those who may return to the peaceful pursuits of civil life1 may be wiser and better men4 ,now1 then1 although weak1 few1 despised and persecuted1 we can aid all these departments of government by our daily supplications1 prayers and intercessions4 ,in doing this service1 we can accomplish what we could not if we were leading the van of battle2 for conquering armies are preceded and succeeded by anguish1 misery and death1 but our service brings down nothing but blessings upon all4 ,they are also weapons1 8not carnal1 but mighty through ,god1 to the pulling down of strongholds20 even the casting down of principalities and powersthe moving of heaven and earth4 ,take two examples3 ,when ,israel fought against the five kings of the ,amorites1 ,joshua prayed and the sun stood still upon ,gibeon1 while the moon hung over the valley of ,ajalon1 till ,israel had conquered4 8,john ,knox was a man famous for his power in prayer1 so that ,queen ,mary used to say she feared his prayers more than all the armies of ,europe4 ,and events showed she had reason to do it4 ,he used to be in such an agony for the deliverance of his country that he could not sleep4 ,he had a place in his garden1 where he used to go to pray4 ,one night he and several friends were praying together1 and as they prayed ,knox spoke and said that deliverance had come4 ,he could not tell what had happened1 but he felt that something had taken place1 for ,god had heard their prayers4 ,what was it8 ,why the next news they heard was3 #8,queen ,mary is dead6'0 ,but the motives for all this work of mercy1 faith1 and love as furnished by the text are as weighty as they are numerous4 #ast4 8,that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life40 ,peace and quietude are some of the conditions of happiness4 ,dr4 ,adam ,bluche says3 8,if the ,state be not in safety1 the individual cannot be secure2 self preservation1 therefore1 should lead men to pray for the government under which they live4 ,rebellions and insurrections seldom terminate even in political goodand even where the government is radically bad1 revolutions are most precarious and hazardous4 ,they who wish such commotions would not be quiet under the most mild and benevolent government40 ,this is true of communities and nations1 as well as of individuals4 ,we all desire it1 and therefore it is our duty to labor for it by every instrument which ,infinite wisdom has ordained and man can employ4 ,and lo6 how excellent the instruments6 ,prayers1 supplications1 intercessionsthanksgiving4 ,as ,aaron approached the ,mercy ,seat1 with the smoking censor1 and was accepted1 so do we approach the throne of the ,eternal with the burning incense of heaven's own making1 and will be accepted4 ,o1 let us supplicate ,god for the peace and quietude of the whole nation6 #b;d4 ,the other motive which ,inspiration presents is1 that we may live 8in all godliness and honesty40 ,godliness first1 honesty afterwards4 ,the latter is the fruit of the former4 ,the godly man1 is he who fears ,god and keeps his commandments4 ,such a man will be honest in words as well as in deeds2 in matters of truth as well as in matters of property4 ,honesty is the only policy of godliness4 ,colored men1 write this sentiment upon your hearts1 engrave it in your memory4 ,let all your thoughts1 words1 actions1 be controlled by this principle1 it is always safe to be honest1 as it is always safe to be godly4 ,one has said1 that 8,an honest man is the noblest work of ,god40 ,but whence comes the honest man8 ,does he not spring out of the godly8 ,most assuredly4 ,for no man is truly honest1 uniformly honest1 and universally honest1 but he who is godly4 ,therefore be godly1 and you will be honest in all things1 at all times1 in all places4 #c;d4 ,the third motive for this heavenly duty1 this intercession in behalf of the ,government is1 that 8,it is good and acceptable in the sight of ,god our ,saviour40 ,whatever ,god accepts and pronounces good1 must be good3 good in itself2 good in its effects1 always good2 good for man1 because ordained of ,god4 #dth4 ,the last motive we present for this godlike work is1 that ,god 8,will have all men to be saved1 and to come unto the knowledge of the truth40 ,hence1 we must pray for these ,authorities not as public men only1 but as private individuals also1not as ,chieftains of the ,nation only1 but as heads of families also1as husbands1 fathers1 ,christians4 ,so that1 while they think1 write1 speak1 act for the public weal1 their own souls may be brought under the saving power of the ,gospel1 and with all the members of their respective families be made the heirs of the grace of life4 ,o1 that ,god may bring them all to the knowledge of the truth as it is in ,christ ,jesus6 ,o1 that every one of these ,authorities may become a holy1 wise1 and just man6 ,then will the laws be enacted in righteousness and executed in the fear of the ,lord4 ,these motives are enforced upon our considerations by the glorious example of the ,lord ,jesus ,christ1,a who is the ,mediator between ,god and ,man1 who ever liveth to make intercession for his foes as well as his friends1 and with whom there is no respect of persons4 ,black men1 red men1 white men1 are all alike before ,him1 and rise or fall1 live or die as they please or offend ,him4 ,a ,when ,st4 ,cyprian defended himself before the ,roman ,pro-,consul1 he said1 8,we pray to ,god not only for ourselves but for all mankind1 and particularly for the ,emperors40 ,tertullian in his ,apology is more particular3 8,we pray for all the ,emperors1 that ,god may grant them long life1 a secure government1 a prosperous family1 vigorous troops1 a faithful senate1 an obedient people2 that the whole world may be in peace2 and that ,god may grant both to ,csar2 and to every man1 the accomplishment of their just desires40 ,so ,origen3 8,we pray for kings and rulers1 that with their royal authority they may be found possessing a wise and prudent mind40 ,see ,dr4 ,a4 ,clarke on the text4 ,to make prayers1 intercessions1 supplications1 thanksgivings for national authorities you now clearly see is a command from heaven4 ,obey it1 and you shall be blessedalways do it1 and you shall be made a blessing to others4 ,whom ,god has blessed no man can curse4 ,if ,god has blessed this nation1 neither internal foes1 nor foreign enemies can crush it4 ,but ,god will bless it if it will do right1 administering justice to each and to all1 protecting the weak as well as the strong1 and throwing the broad wings of its power equally over men of every color4 ,this is ,god-like1 and ,god will bless his own image1 be it in a nation or in a man4 ,then1 ,o my country1 8shall thy light break forth as the morningthy health shall spring forth speedilythy righteousness shall go before thee10 and 8the glory of the ,lord shall be thy reward40 ,then shall justice be engraven on our arms1 and righteousness on our star-spangled banners2 our armies shall then be led to battle by the ,lord1 and victory secured by the right arm of our ,god4 99 99 99 99 99
