bring forth10 it seems all the more incumbent on us while we live in the present not to forget the past4 ,accordingly1 the ,committee felt that pictures and drawings of the ,london of our ancestors would have exceptional interest1 and the present exhibition is the result4 ,the space at our command being limited1 we can only show a tithe of the material still in existence1 but1 through the kindness of owners1 many fine works are on our walls1 with others which1 although as regards craftsmanship they have only average merit1 are valuable as showing noteworthy scenes and buildings of a former day4 ,among the number that have not been exhibited before we would mention the drawings from ,windsor which ,his ,majesty the ,king has been graciously pleased to lend1 also those belonging to ,sir ,edward ,coates--but a trifling instalment of his unique collection4 ,by way of preface a few words on old ,london views may not be thought superfluous4 ,in manuscripts and early printed books pictures or illustrations which purported to represent ,london were now and then produced1 but the artists did not attempt to imitate nature with precision1 their feeling for decorative effect being paramount4 ,indeed1 in ,r4 ,pynson's edition of the 8,cronycle of ,englonde0 7#aeaj71 what is probably the earliest engraved view which has any claim to represent ,london1 shows no pretence of accuracy4 ,with an effort of faith we may believe that we are looking at representations of old ,st4 ,paul's1 the ,tower1 ,london ,bridge1 ,ludgate1 and the church of the ,black ,friars1 but the design is symbolic rather than imitative4 ,illuminations in manuscripts of the previous century in one or two instances give us clearer topographical hints4 ,a volume of the ,english poems of ,charles1 ,duke of ,orleans1 among the royal manuscripts at the ,british ,museum1 shows the duke1 who was captured at the battle of ,agincourt1 as a prisoner in the ,tower of ,london1 where he was kept for many years4 ,the river side of the keep has been opened1 and he appears seated within4 ,portions of the ,tower and old ,london ,bridge with its chapel are well portrayed1 while other buildings1 although incorrectly placed1 add a little to our knowledge4 ,another of the royal manuscripts in the ,british ,museum shows ,chaucer's ,canterbury pilgrims starting on their journey1 with ,london in the background1 the most interesting feature of this topographically being the old city wall1 with its bastions at regular intervals4 ,something more may be learnt from the engraving 7after a picture at ,cowdray1 destroyed by fire long ago7 of the procession of ,edward ,,vi through ,london in #aedg4 ,the artist1 however1 is still not imitating nature directly1 but introduces conventional renderings of the more important buildings with which he was familiar1 without troubling himself much about their relative positions4 ,two fine representations of ,tudor ,london deserve special mention4 ,the first of them as regards time is a view of ,london1 not from ,suffolk ,house as is generally supposed1 but from the tower of the church of ,st4 ,george the ,martyr1 ,southwark1 with ,suffolk ,house1 or part of it1 in the foreground4 ,it is a pen drawing1 ten feet long or more1 and is now in the ,bodleian ,library at ,oxford4 ,although the various important buildings are brought somewhat together in order to include them all1 this view has a look of nature1 the style also being free and skilful4 ,the artist is ,anthonie ,van den ,wyngaerde1 now generally held to have been a ,fleming in the train of ,philip ,,ii4 ,the second ,tudor view1 which is at ,hatfield ,house and belongs to the ,marquess of ,salisbury1 is an oil picture1 also by a ,flemish artist1 ,joris ,hoefnagel4 ,it was rather poorly described by ,george ,corner in a paper read before members of the ,surrey ,archaeological ,society in #aheh1 and was in the ,tudor ,exhibition at the ,new ,gallery in #ahij1 being then called ,horsleydown ,fair2 but in all probability it represents a marriage fte by the old church of ,st4 ,mary ,magdalen1 ,bermondsey1 which has since been rebuilt excepting the lower part of the mediaeval tower4 ,the ground between the church and the river is portrayed with much detail1 and the scene is full of life and incident4 ,the ,tower of ,london appears in the distance4 ,hoefnagel1 born at ,antwerp1 was responsible for many beautiful paintings1 mostly of the miniature kind1 and drew plans for ,braun and ,hogenberg's 8,civitates ,orbis ,terrarum10 published at ,cologne in #aegb1 among them that representing ,london4 ,on this perhaps the plan ascribed to ,agas was based2 the alternative being that they both owe their origin in some degree to a still earlier plan1 all trace of which has disappeared4 ,in the seventeenth century pictures of ,london subjects begin to be fairly plentiful4 ,among early ones the curious diptych of old ,st4 ,paul's1 dating from the time of ,james ,i and belonging to the ,society of ,antiquaries1 may be mentioned4 ,although artless and entirely lacking in perspective1 it contains details which are not to be found elsewhere1 and there is a quaint ,london view at the back4 ,later in that century a series of accurate etchings by ,hollar throw much light on the ,london of his day4 ,about the same time also a few large and realistic pictures of ,london were painted1 of which we are able to show two or three examples4 ,soon after #agbj the charm of ,london scenes came to be more generally recognized1 and from then onwards her river1 her parks1 her streets and public buildings1 have been depicted times innumerable1 and by some of our most famous artists4 ,until the latter part of the eighteenth century oil pictures of scenes on the ,thames were plentiful1 ,samuel ,scott1 who was also a marine painter1 setting the example4 ,he was a friend of ,hogarth1 and together they illustrated the account of that frolicsome jaunt to the ,isle of ,sheppey and back in #agcb1 which is now in the ,british ,museum4 ,scott1 who was latterly much influenced by ,canaletto1 founded more or less of a school1 some of the pictures usually ascribed to him being perhaps by his followers4 ,canaletto himself paid us a prolonged visit1 and several of his fine ,london drawings are on our walls4 ,there is also evidence that he designed two oil pictures here exhibited 7,nos4 #fi and #id71 which were previously attributed to ,scott4 ,as time went on water-colours by the ,sandbys and others gradually came into vogue4 ,many years before the date to which this exhibition is confined1 our predecessors began to take an interest not only in river scenes and great public buildings1 but in humbler subjects1 such as old houses1 and picturesque nooks and corners threatened with destruction4 ,pennant's 8,london10 of which there are several splendidly extra illustrated copies1 helped to encourage these varied tastes1 so did ,wilkinson's 8,londina ,illustrata10 to name only one later publication1 and competent draughtsmen and engravers got something like permanent employment on work of this kind4 ,we will now say a few words about the great private collections of ,london topographical prints1 drawings1 maps and plans1 formed many years ago1 chiefly of material which comes within the period to which we are limited4 ,three of these collections are specially famous1 and they were brought together by busy men who died within living memory4 ,these were ,frederick ,crace1 to whom we owe the many portfolios catalogued under his name in the ,print ,room of the ,british ,museum2 ,james ,holbert ,wilson1 whose collection has unfortunately been dispersed1 and ,john ,edmund ,gardner4 ,it is his amazing collection1 far larger than all the rest put together1 which has been saved for our interest and instruction by ,sir ,edward ,coates1 and of which a few examples are here shown4 ,the late ,mr4 ,gardner who formed it1 began when little more than a boy1 by the purchase for five guineas of an extra illustrated ,pennant1 and he continued buying steadily throughout a long life4 ,he passed away ,december #bith1 #ahii1 at the ripe age of eighty-two1 having occupied himself with his beloved portfolios on that very day4 ,among his more important purchases were almost all the original drawings1 about two hundred in number1 made for the 8,londina ,illustrata10 and twenty-eight folio volumes of sketches by ,john ,carter4 ,not very many years ago the late ,j4 ,p4 ,emslie1 who1 with ,c4 ,j4 ,richardson and others1 carried on the work of previous generations1 told the present writer that he had just completed his thousandth drawing for the ,gardner collection4 ,to conclude4 ,it is now somewhat the habit to speak slightingly of topographical pictures and drawings1 as if there were something unworthy in copying with correctness the appearance of an interesting building or an attractive river or street scene4 ,such work is supposed to be outside the region of art1 as giving no play to the imagination4 ,but surely 8the originality of a subject is in its treatment40 ,a man without a touch of the true spirit may paint the most ideal scene and leave us cold4 ,on the other hand1 while many artists of no exceptional talent1 by their honest efforts have left topographical records for which we are thankful1 almost all our great landscape painters have deigned now and then to depict ,london1 and for those in sympathy with them they still give something of the thrill of pleasure which they themselves felt when they put their whole souls into their work4 ,,philip ,,norman4 ,illustration ,illustration ,,catalogue ,illustration ,the numbering of the ,drawings and ,pictures begins on the ,entrance ,door1 and is continued to the left4 ,the measurements are in inches 7the width preceding the height7 and do not include the frame or mount4 ,the ,furniture1 etc41 is described after the ,pictures4 ,the ,committee accept no responsibility for the accuracy of the attributions in the ,catalogue4 ,,plate ,i4 #a ,,old ,,london ,,bridge4 ,watercolour4 #ag by #aj in4 ,the bridge shortly before its removal4 their hands ever since4 ,the choir and steeple were destroyed by the then ,marquess of ,winchester at the beginning of the seventeenth century4 ,in #ahfb what remained of the church was very much injured by fire1 the roof and all the fittings being burnt4 ,it was 8restored0 at a cost of about #ab1jjj4 ,the interest of this drawing is due to the fact that it shows the church1 with its decorated ,in #agfc the manor was sold to ,lord ,spencer1 and much of the house is said to have been pulled down not long afterwards4 ,the remainder was enclosed in ground attached to a mill built about #agid1 and it stands in the premises of the existing flour mill near the parish church1 but is now dilapidated4 ,this old drawing represents the house much as it was a few years ago4 ,it contained a panelled to the north or left1 but from variations in buildings is evidently some years earlier4 ,the ,banqueting ,house appears1 and near it on right the ,holbein ,gate is partly visible4 ,figures are emerging from a great staircase which communicated with a passage over this gate4 ,in an article by the late ,sir ,reginald ,palgrave1 ,k4,c4,b41 we are told 7on the authority of the ,sydney papers7 that ,philip1 #dth ,earl of ,pembroke1 on the day of ,charles ,i's execution1 8out of his chamber0 7in the ,cockpit part of ,whitehall7 8looked upon the ,king as he went up those stairs from the ,park to the gallery on the way to the place of his death40 ,hard by1 to left of staircase1 is a doorway to passage through the ,tiltyard4 ,to right of staircase is a long gallery dating from ,henry ,,viii's time4 ,farther to right is a two-storied building which appears in ,fisher's plan as part of the ,duke of ,albemarle's lodgings4 ,vertue's copy of this plan is dated #afhj1 but ,mr4 ,spiers gave good reasons for believing that it was drawn before #afgj4 ,the battlemented structure behind1 with buttresses1 mullioned windows1 and turrets at the angles 7mentioned in note on ,no4 #hi71 was to north of passage from ,whitehall to the ,cockpit1 now known as ,treasury ,passage4 ,in the 8,gentleman's ,magazine0 for #ahaf it is described as part of the palace built by ,cardinal ,wolsey1 and other writers have called it 8,wolsey's ,treasury40 ,contemporary evidence1 however1 is lacking to prove that any part of ,wolsey's 8,york ,place0 stood west of the thoroughfare that led from ,charing ,cross1 the land on the ,park side having apparently been conveyed to ,henry ,,viii by the ,abbot of ,westminster in #aecb4 ,the material of this important building was brick and stone4 ,its external character and the ground plan suggest a hall1 but whatever its origin it was undoubtedly used as a tennis court by ,henry ,,viii4 ,being perhaps of inconvenient shape for the later developments of the game1 and ,charles ,,ii having built himself a tennis court farther south1 floors were inserted in #affd1 and it became the ,duke of ,monmouth's lodging4 ,what remained of it in the early nineteenth century was finally swept away to make room for ,soane's ,council ,office as completed by ,barry4 ,the next building in front is the ,tudor ,cockpit1 with its octagonal roof still intact4 ,for years it had not served its original purpose1 but gave the name to a group of lodgings in which it was evidently included4 ,the ,earl of ,pembroke1 as we have pointed out1 was living there at the time of the execution of ,charles ,i1 after which ,oliver ,cromwell took possession of these lodgings1 and it was probably in the veritable ,cockpit that music was performed during his protectorate4 ,there also plays were acted both in the time of ,charles ,i and after the ,restoration4 ,just before that event the lodgings were assigned to ,george ,monck1 who became ,duke of ,albemarle1 and in ,fisher's plan it is marked as part of his lodgings4 ,as mentioned in describing ,no4 #hi1 between the dates of the two pictures this architectural relic was obliterated by a brick building1 which in turn gave way to ,kent's ,treasury4 ,until about #ahjf1 the word ,cockpit was applied to a famous but elusive political centre included in the ,treasury and more or less on the site of ,henry ,,viii's building4 ,lord ,welby thought that the style 8,treasury ,chambers ,cockpit0 was known much later4 ,the passage from ,whitehall to the ,treasury is partly lighted on the north side by a large window with mullions and transom1 and on the south there is a two-light window of similar date4 ,both are involved externally in ,tudor brickwork4 ,on the ground floor a ,tudor doorway survives1 and all these must have been in the casing of the original passage that led to the ,cockpit4 ,as mistakes are frequent on the subject we will add that 8,cockpit ,steps0 leading from ,birdcage ,walk into ,dartmouth ,street have no historical connection with ,whitehall4 ,they adjoined a later ,cockpit surmounted by a cupola1 which is marked in a map belonging to ,strype's ,stow #agbj1 and was taken down in #ahaf4 ,there was also a 8,royal ,cockpit0 in ,tufton ,street1 ,westminster1 described in the 8,london ,magazine10 ,november #ahbb1 and in the 8,every ,night ,book0 as late as #ahbg1 which was probably the last in ,london4 ,to right of the ,tudor ,cockpit is a house with tiled roof and dormer windows1 apparently that portion of the ,prime ,minister's official residence adjoining the ,treasury and facing the garden1 for although much altered1 the points of resemblance are strong4 ,in vol4 ii of the ,lond4 ,top4 ,soc4 8,record10 ,mr4 ,spiers attributed the design of this building to ,wren on account of a ground plan doubtless representing it1 signed by him with the addition of the letters 8,sr ,gll0 and date #afgg2 but the present writer is of opinion that it already existed at the time1 and1 being on ,crown land1 that ,wren merely signed the plan as ,surveyor ,general4 ,in the 8,record0 a plan by ,sir ,john ,soane is also given1 showing his additions and alterations made in #ahbe4 ,that part of ,no4 #aj containing the entrance from the roadway does not belong to the original structure1 although they are linked together by passages4 ,it forms one block with ,no4 #aa1 and from the style of the pair they cannot have been built much before the middle of the eighteenth century1 when they appear in views by ,j4 ,maurer1 partly occupying the site of the building with gable and low tower1 shown in our picture to the extreme right4 ,on this subject the late ,mr4 ,c4 ,eyre ,pascoe in his volume entitled 8,no4 #aj ,downing ,street0 was misinformed4 ,in studying these old pictures it must always be borne in mind that artists attached small importance to rigid accuracy2 while fairly correct as regards the main buildings they omitted and arranged with the object of making an agreeable pattern4 ,the trees in ,nos4 #hi and #if differ completely1 and in the latter the head of the ornamental canal1 formed soon after the ,restoration1 has been introduced out of its place1 quite near to the ,cockpit4 ,by it are deer1 and it is covered with waterfowl4 ,on the bank is a copy in bronze of the ,borghese statue of a gladiator1 executed at ,rome by ,hubert ,le ,sur1 removed by ,queen ,anne to ,hampton ,court1 and by ,george ,,iv to ,windsor4 ,on the left ,king ,charles ,,ii is taking a walk accompanied by various dogs and a crowd of courtiers4 ,near the buildings a detachment of soldiers in scarlet uniforms marches to the right4 ,the colour carried at their head agrees with that mentioned by ,f4 ,sandwith1 ,lancaster ,herald #afgf-hi1 as the ensign of the ,lieutenant-,colonel of the ,coldstream ,guards 8from #afgj or thereabout to #afhc40 ,according to his description the ensign was of 8blue taffeta with a plain white cross1 surmounted by a cross of crimson or a cross of ,st4 ,george40 ,unfortunately on the scale of our engraving neither the monarch nor this ensign are distinctly visible4 ,there is an illustration of the scene in ,pennant's 8,london0 from ,no4 #if or a replica1 and a larger one by ,s4 ,mazell4 ,examples of them are in the ,crace ,collection1 ,british ,museum4 ,hendrik ,danckerts1 or ,dankerts1 the artist1 was born at the ,hague about #afcj1 studied in ,italy1 and after his return was invited to ,england by ,charles ,,ii1 who employed him to paint pictures of royal palaces and sea-ports4 ,walpole speaks of his working in connection with ,hollar4 ,james ,,ii had various landscapes by him1 and ,samuel ,pepys1 who calls him 8the great landscape painter10 mentions seeing him in #affh-fi and arranging for views of ,whitehall1 ,hampton ,court1 ,greenwich1 and ,windsor1 to adorn his dining-room panels4 ,danckerts1 who was a ,roman ,catholic1 is said to have left ,england during the ,popish ,plot and to have died at ,amsterdam soon afterwards4 ,from what precedes we may be sure that the picture was painted between #afgj and about #afgg1 perhaps not much after the earlier date4 ,by ,,hendrick ,,danckerts 7c4 #afcj-afgh74 ,lent by resembling ,colonel ,charteris1 is conducting a young lady attended by two maids1 near whom is the puzzling inscription3 ,,kee ,,pont ,,hiss ,,ide keep on this side4 ,the distance is a perspective had been added to break the rush of water on the piers4 ,at the end of new ,london ,bridge is the church of ,st4 ,michael1 ,crooked ,lane1 pulled down soon afterwards4 ,the first stone of the new ,secretary of ,state for ,india1 the ,worshipful ,companies of ,carpenters1 ,stationers and ,clothworkers1 and the ,master of the ,charterhouse1 has been chosen as a fitting accompaniment to the drawings and paintings of ,old ,london4 ,they form a representative selection of such relics of ,london's history as have survived the vicissitudes of ,time4 ,a certain individuality stamps the furniture4 ,it was made for a definite reason1 had a serious and official purpose to fulfil1 and thus differs in some respects from the contemporary furniture of the home1 in the making of which comfort1 luxury1 elegance and other domestic requirements had to be considered4 ,as would be expected1 therefore1 the furniture from the ,india ,office1 from the ,city ,halls and from the ,charterhouse1 is essentially severe in character1 8masculine and unaffected10 and thoroughly sound both in design and workmanship4 ,the largest and most important collection is that from the ,secretary of ,state for ,india4 ,the ,india ,office is fortunate in possessing a considerable number of fine pieces of ,english furniture of the eighteenth century4 ,most of these were transferred in the nineteenth century from the 8,old ,india ,house0 in ,leadenhall ,street at the time when the ,india ,office absorbed the business of the ,east ,india ,company4 ,these historical events are discussed in full detail in 8,records of the ,honourable ,east ,india ,company10 by ,sir ,george ,birdwood and ,william ,foster4 ,a variety of interesting pieces have been lent by the ,worshipful ,companies of ,carpenters1 ,stationers and ,clothworkers4 ,in the course of their history the ,city ,companies have suffered many misfortunes4 ,of these the most disastrous was the ,great ,fire of #afff1 which wrought havoc with their ,halls and historic possessions4 ,most of the ,halls were destroyed or suffered damage4 ,many were rebuilt under the influence of ,sir ,christopher ,wren and his successors1 but in most cases have been reconstructed in the nineteenth century4 ,fortunately1 some of the panelling1 carvings and furniture have been preserved and incorporated in the new buildings4 ,the octagonal table in this exhibition1 lent by the ,carpenters' ,company1 is one of the few existing pieces earlier in date than the ,great ,fire4 ,from the ,charterhouse a few good pieces of ,english furniture have been obtained4 ,first a ,carthusian monastery1 afterwards a nobleman's palace1 and lastly a ,pensioners' ,hospital1 the ,charterhouse still shows records of the different phases of its romantic history4 ,the splendid ,elizabethan staircase and some of the panelling belong to the period when the ,duke of ,norfolk occupied the building as a residence4 ,other furniture and decoration commemorates the foundation of the hospital by ,thomas ,sutton1 a wealthy trader and philanthropist2 worthy of special mention is the small communion table in the chapel1 bearing his arms and a mutilated date 7#af--71 perhaps the most distinguished piece of furniture of its period which the country possesses4 ,unfortunately1 it has not been possible to secure this table for the
