and did good work for ,god4 ,the people received me1 both white and black4 ,in #aiac ,i was called in with my members1 and my little tabernacle was broken up4 ,in #aiad1 ,i was sent to ,yonkers1 ,n4 ,y41 to do a work for ,god4 ,i built a tabernacle there1 and prospered4 ,the ,lord blessed me and gave me friends4 ,when ,america joined the ,world ,war1 my little church was called in again2 ,i sent the members who were with me down to headquarters1 the ,mother ,church1 but ,i refused to go4 ,for some unknown reason1 ,i had become very unpopular at headquarters1 so ,i stepped out on the word of ,god1 and submitted myself to ,his spirit in all things4 ,men and women's hearts are full of jealousy1 and my leader cut me loose from her4 ,for the space of three years1 ,i sat alone in the world1 without a member who could help me1 spiritually or carnally4 ,the white people did not turn me down1 they stuck by me4 ,my finances came directly from them4 ,they really befriended me1 and ,i cannot thank the ,god of ,heaven enough for them4 ,when my people laughed at me and rebuked me1 the good white people were with me1 and helped me to preach righteousness to my people4 ,allow me1 my friend1 to speak a word for the ,mother ,church1 whose leader is ,evangelist ,m4 ,d4 ,morris1 the title she holds is1 the ,queen of ,israel4 ,she is the chief evangelist1 set up over all of the daughters who are in the ,church of ,god and ,saints of ,christ4 ,she and her ministers are the founders of this church4 ,she is helping people who cannot help themselves4 ,she is their spiritual mother1 and she loves them4 ,she wants me there until after the great destruction on the earth1 but ,i have a work to do4 ,i shall go and warn the people of the coming destruction among all nations4 ,when we as a people of ,god learn to know and control ourselves1 and be guided by the words of ,god and ,his righteous spirit1 then true love will come in and a true smile will cover your face1 and sunshine will come out of your heart4 ,the meanest man will feel good when he sees you and will respect you1 and encourage you to keep it up4 ,the ,black ,jews ,this is the most important part of my subject1 in fact1 it is the most important subject of the world4 ,the representatives of this name have been1 and yet are driven1 sold and killed1 some put in ships and carried to desert lands1 put there to starve to death4 ,some are chained together and carried from their country and made slaves to all the nations of the world4 ,they are not known by their own name1 which is the ,black ,jews4 ,god speaking through ,moses in ,deut4 #bh3cg4 ,and thou shalt become an astonishment1 a proverb and a by-word among all nations whether the ,lord shall lead thee4 ,about #ehf ,b4 ,c41 ,nebuchadnezzar conquered ,jerusalem and carried tens of thousands of ,jews to ,babylon1 and the ,black ,jews have been slaves ever since as a race4 ,but we must admit that the nations have suffered and are cursed for trying to destroy and keep us down4 ,the nations have not made much headway with civilization1 they are now going back where they started from1 so let us all come to the agreement that the ,god of ,heaven and ,earth1 loves all of ,his children if they will do ,his commandments1 whether they be white or black1 it makes no difference with him4 ,this is what ,jesus said to both ,jew and ,gentile1 white or black4 ,st4 ,john #ae3ab4 ,this is my commandment1 that ye love one another as ,i have loved you4 ,my subject1 the ,black ,jews1 mean all the dark and black people of the world--four hundred million of them1 but all of them don't know that they are the real ,jews1 but they are turning back to their ,god of ,israel1 and we are going to take our white brothers' children with us1 and the mothers and fathers if they want to go1 but the children must turn to the ,god of ,israel and learn of his ways and keep his commandments4 ,proof ,that ,we ,are ,jews ,now my friends1 allow me to quote some scripture on the subject and make some comparison4 ,i will take first the twenty-eighth chapter of ,deuteronomy and the thirty-seventh verse4 ,and thou shalt become an astonishment1 a proverb and a by-word among all of the nations of the earth1 whether the ,lord shall lead thee4 ,my friends1 history will prove to you that we blacks are called by many names4 ,all nations have a different name for us4 ,in ,america they call us negroes1 colored people1 darkies1 niggers and shines1 because our skin is slick and greasy4 ,in foreign countries1 we are known by many different proverb1 that the people see fit to call us by4 ,you yourself can think of many names by which we are known4 ,our true name is the children of ,israel1 ,the ,black ,jews4 ,after we were in bondage for seventy years1 then ,israel took the names after the fourth son of ,jacob1 about #ejj ,b4 ,c41 and built up ,jerusalem the second time4 ,read ,nehemiah1 ,the ,prophet ,book1 and if you read the #bhth chapter of ,deuteronomy1 you will see and know who the real ,jew is4 ,we black people have fulfilled the chapter to the letter1 it fits us like the paper on the wall4 ,there is no other nation in the world who has fulfilled this book as we have4 ,again my friends1 that you may see the children of ,israel1 the ,black ,jews more clearly4 ,allow me to quote ,paul's writing in ,romans1 ,romans #a3bj #a-b-c-d-e-f4 ,for the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen being understood by the things that are made1 even his eternal power and ,god head1 so that they are without excuse4 ,because that1 when they knew ,god1 they glorified him not as ,god1 neither were thankful2 but became vain in their imaginations1 and their foolish heart was darkened4 ,professing themselves to be wise1 they became fools1 and changed the glory of the uncorruptible ,god into an image1 made like to corruptible man1 and to birds1 four-footed beasts1 and creeping things4 ,wherefore ,god1 also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts1 to dishonor their own bodies between themselves4 ,who changed the truth of ,god into a lie1 and worshipped and served the creature more than the creator1 who is blessed forever1 ,amen4 ,for this cause ,god gave them up to vile affections1 for even their women changed the natural things into that which is against nature4 ,now my friends1 that is why we as a race have suffered untold punishment from these nations4 ,god has turned them against us1 and we are cut off from our blessing from ,god for the time being4 ,now he is calling us to serve him1 that the nations of the world may be blessed4 ,to prove to you that you have never studied this subject1 that the ,black ,jews1 our fathers were in ,jerusalem at one time1 about #bjjj years ago1 ,the ,book of ,luke1 #bast chapter and the #bdth and #beth verse4 ,and they shall fall by the edge of the sword1 and shall be led away captive into all nations1 and ,jerusalem shall be trodden down by the gentiles1 until the time of the gentiles be fulfilled4 ,and there shall be signs in the sun1 and in the moon1 and in the stars2 and upon the earth distress of nations1 with perplexity2 the sea and waves roaring4 ,we black people are the only ones who have been captives as a race4 ,we were led away in chains and brought to ,america and made slaves4 ,the white ,jew has never been a slave as a race here4 ,they came on their own account4 ,he has not been made slave of to any nation1 but he has financed all nations and has become their money king4 ,but we ,black ,jews have nothing we can call our own1 and #hj per cent of us now are keeping books with the animals in the forest1 and are hunted as you would hunt any other animal4 ,our backs are to the wall1 and ,god will soon answer our cry1 for we can not stand it much longer4 ,the enemies who are boasting over the downfall of his black brother was warned by ,apostle ,paul in ,romans4 ,romans #aa3bd3be3bf3bg3bh4 ,for if thou were to cut one of the olive trees1 which is wild by nature1 and were grafted contrary to nature into a good olive tree2 how much more shall these1 which be the natural branches1 be grappled into their own olive tree4 ,for ,i would not1 brethren1 that ye should be ignorant of the mystery1 lest ye be wise in your own conceits1 that blindness in part is happened to ,israel1 until the fullness of the gentiles come in4 ,and so all ,israel shall be saved1 as it is written4 ,there shall come out of ,zion1 the deliverer1 and shall turn away ungodliness from ,jacob4 ,for this is my covenant unto them1 when ,i shall take away their sins4 ,as concerning the gospel1 they are enemies for your sake2 but as touching the election1 they are beloved for the fathers' sakes4 ,this part of the subject shows one that we should love one another whether we be ,jew or ,gentile4 ,the color does not make the man1 it is the high morals of righteousness for which he stands4 ,in order to try to satisfy your minds on the ,black ,jews1 and the wisest men the world ever knew1 allow me to direct your thoughts to ,prophet ,job1 ,job #cj3cj4 ,my skin is black upon me and my bones are burnt with heat4 ,now ,job was a ,black ,jewish ,prophet1 a man of ,god4 ,there is some good in some of us black people that you can trust4 ,i will now call your attention to one of the greatest ,black ,jews that ever lived4 ,when ,nebuchadnezzar invaded ,jerusalem1 this man was one of the first to go in bondage1 ,jeremiah #h3ba4 ,for the hurt of the daughters of my people am ,i hurt1 ,i am black--astonishment has taken hold on me4 ,when this holy black man saw with his own eyes the destruction of the beautiful daughters of ,jerusalem by the wicked soldiers1 he wept like a child1 but the ,god of ,israel suffered it to be so4 ,now my friends1 ,i will direct your thoughts again to the book of books1 that which the civilized world recognizes to be the true holy record4 ,songs of ,solomon #a3e3f4 ,i am black1 but comely2 ye daughters of ,jerusalem1 as the tents of ,kedar as the curtains of ,solomon4 ,look not upon me because ,i am black1 because the sun has looked upon me1 my mother's children were angry with me1 made me the keeper of their vineyards1 but mine own have ,i not kept4 ,i draw your attention to these great characters1 because we blacks of ,african descent are from the same stock4 ,you need not be afraid when you have us around you or sit beside you in a car4 ,if you train us in the right way1 my people will be your best friends4 ,if we have not got your school education1 we have got good common sense and manners1 that our old mothers taught us in the cabins4 ,it is not the color that makes the man1 it is the high principle for which he stands4 ,allow me1 dear reader1 to call your attention to a question that ,jesus1 that great prophet who faced the world unto death1 who was born of the royal family of ,king ,david1 ,solomon's father1 asked in ,matthew #af3ac4 ,when ,jesus came into the coasts at ,caesarea ,phillipi1 he asked his disciples saying1 8whom do men say the son of ,god am40 ,and they said1 some say that thou art ,john the ,baptist6 ,some1 ,elias and others ,jeremiah1 or one of the prophets4 ,my friends1 ,jeremiah acknowledged he was black1 ,job was a prophet1 and said he was black1 then all the other prophets must have been black1 and if ,jesus looked like one of them1 he must have been black also4 ,in this subject ,i am not condemning neither ,jew or ,gentile4 ,i am only finding myself4 ,my people are the lost tribe of ,israel1 and yet slaves4 ,i have repeatedly stated in my subject1 that the so-called negro is yet a slave4 ,in order to prove it1 ,i shall write some facts1 and ,i know that you1 my reader1 will agree with me4 ,when the ,jews were driven out of ,egypt about four thousand years ago1 they were all black1 and were slaves in ,egypt4 ,they were in the jungles forty years1 and ,god led them out by a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night4 ,before they were driven out of ,jerusalem1 there was no mixed breed allowed there4 ,forty years ,a4 ,d4 they went out a mixed multitude of people of all colors4 ,from #aibj on1 they are going back to ,jerusalem all white4 ,they are the only ,jews that the ,gentiles' recognize as a race to this day4 ,in the fourteenth century in ,russia1 the ,czar issued a creed that they could serve their own ,god1 and have their own holidays4 ,these ,jews are the nine and one-half tribes who rebelled from under ,rehoboham4 ,black ,moon ,dear reader1 ,i have seen the red moon1 the yellow moon and the white1 but on the twenty-fourth day of ,january1 nineteen hundred and twenty-five1 ,i had the pleasure of seeing the ,black ,moon for the first time in my life4 ,he was so black1 the white people on earth had to turn on their lights1 that they might see how to do business4 ,he was so black that he put the sun out of business4 ,he was so black that you could not see his features4 ,he looked to me like a black ball traveling from southwest to northeast4 ,the moon that ,i see traveling from east to west is a white moon that gives light on the earth by night4 ,when you see him in the daytime1 he is white just the same4 ,but the ,god of ,heaven and ,earth has shown his power through a black moon4 ,we as a people should give ,god praise for all ,he does4 ,about four thousand years ago1 he parted the ,red ,sea and let the children of ,israel pass over dry shod4 ,i will make the statement here in my book1 that the children of ,israel were black1 and the ,egyptians were black at that time4 ,the seeds of the ancient ,israelites are yet black1 and among the races of the world are kept economic slaves4 ,now as ,god sees fit to use his red moon1 his white moon1 his yellow moon and his black moon1 let us work together as one great big moon for ,god1 that we may obtain his mercies on our children4 ,i biblically and historically have proof to back up these statements that ,i make1 but it is not necessary that ,i should write them in my book1 for this book is the first step to world peace1 and the first step to destruction of race hatred4 ,you cannot build up love in men and women's hearts by telling lies1 for they are without a foundation4 ,tell the truth and back it up with your honor1 that ,god may bless you and your children upon the earth4 ,nine and one-half tribes of ,israel rebelled from under ,rehobohan1 ,king ,solomon's son1 and went on and intermarried with the other nations of the world1 and they became white4 ,there are only about fourteen million that are known as ,jews1 the others are the nations of the world4 ,the fourteen million are going to become the greatest white men on earth4 ,he will redeem the ,gentiles and save many of them from destruction on earth1 all business will be turned over into his hand4 ,through him will the ,gentiles receive the black man1 that he may go and serve his ,god4 ,this is a white man who has never changed his religion1 he keeps to the religion of his black ancestors1 which was handed down by ,black ,moses to us4 ,whether they want to or not1 all nations have got to love the white ,jews that they may be blessed on the earth4 ,the white ,jew is right about ,jesus2 he was a man and had a mother and father like all other children4 ,the ,romans killed him for talking against the government4 ,he was a black king from the loins of ,king ,david4 ,he was a great holy man who executed justice on earth and they had to get rid of him1 if they didn't they were not friends of ,caesar4 ,now1 ,i won't go any further with that sentence because you cannot heal a sore by picking off the scab4 ,let us love one another as this man ,jesus has loved us4 ,negro ,is ,yet ,a ,slave ,the so-called negro is yet a slave1 though free1 some reflections on the economic slavery which makes the race helpless victims4 ,three score years ago1 ,abraham ,lincoln emancipated four million and one-half negroes1 this was a wonderful blessing to the negro1 for he had prayed to his ,god unceasingly1 that the slave-chain which held him fast might be broken4 ,he had been under the lash1 his women had seen their children sold like so many cattle2 they had met injustice at every turn of the road4 ,the negro1 after a period of time1 began to realize that after all1 he was not a free being1 altho he was not subject to his master4 ,the negro probably thought that the emancipation meant freedom to him1 but to emancipate the negro only meant to give him a chance to free himself4 ,to emancipate the negro meant to give him a chance to work out his own destiny4 ,no nation or race has at any time freed another nation or race1 they are too busy working out their own social or national problems4 ,the power to become free1 lies within the race or nation itself4 ,the negro forgot that his own freedom had just begun1 being untrained1 unskilled labor naturally fell to his lot1 a hewer of wood and a drawer of water1 was his portion4 ,but will the so-called negro be free as long as he remains at the foot of the industrial ladder8 ,can he be free as long as poverty stares him in the face8 ,can he take his place among the other races of the world1 unless he becomes a producer1 and controls the economic forces about him8 ,why is the so-called negro not free today8 ,why is he pleading for an opportunity and for justice to be given him on every hand8 ,there is but one answer1 he is a victim of economic slavery--a slave to the economic force of this country4 ,in the field of mercantile business he is only a child1 in the world of commerce he is yet a stranger1 in co-operative industries he is an alien1 in all creative industries he is at the foot of the ladder4 ,if the negro would become free and independent1 let him enter into the creative industries in larger numbers4 ,we must have a greater per cent of negroes in business and fewer negroes in the so-called parasitical professions1 such as lawyers and doctors4 ,we must have captains of industries1 we must have more negroes as manufacturers and bankers1 we must have more negroes1 instead of looking to the white race to support his boys and girls1 the negro will then be able to protect them himself4 ,in proportion then1 as the negro learns the spirit of co-operation1 in that same proportion will he be able to rid himself of the existing evils that seem to befall him4 ,in this martialistic age1 any race1 in order to protect itself1 must conquer those economical principles so necessary to its very existence4 ,then let the negro enter largely into the creative fields of industry1 let him become a producer and not a consumer4 ,when he has control of all the economic forces about him1 prejudice1 jimcrowism and disfranchisement will cease1 no longer will he have to plead to the white man for justice4 ,we will1 with our finance1 backed by a spirit of co-operation1 force every barrier down4 ,when the negro succeeds as a financier1 he and his posterity will be as free as the mighty winged eagle that soars to the summits sublime1 as free as the fairest ,anglo-,saxon that trod ,american soil4 ,then1 and not until then1 will the negro be free4 ,i am drawing your attention to a source of facts that are among all nations1 the opportunities that would free a race1 are ninety-eight per cent cut off from the black man1 he is only a consumer and not a producer4 ,he is not allowed to produce like other nations1 not even in his own country1 ,africa1 the country that the ,god of ,heaven and ,earth has given him4 ,he is ready and capable to build up his country1 and to pick and back his own leaders1 those whom he can trust4 ,ninety-eight per cent of the picked leaders have proven themselves to be self-seekers and crooks4 ,we don't want them1 but they must go for the good of all nations that put such traitors over a people of ,god4 ,my friend1 ,i don't mean that we will be free twenty-five years or a century from now4 ,i am not thinking about that4 ,the time has come now that the black man must have equal rights4 ,we are coming out of schools1 grammar1 high and colleges1 by the thousands1 and have nothing to do4 ,the common labor has been given to the foreigners1 and the ,american business men tell our boys and girls that they cannot employ colored help1 although we have a college diploma in our hands4 ,justice is looking all nations in the face and there is a wolf in the back yard4 ,our fathers and mothers were put in chains and carried away1 and have never had a chance to free themselves1 but the ,god of ,heaven and ,earth put them in the hands of good white people all over the world1 to help free their sons and daughters4 ,the white boys and girls are calling for their black1 brown and mulatto classmates who finished school with them4 ,they learn to love one another with a love that prejudice cannot reach1 matters not what the white father or mother says4 ,they see no difference in the race1 as the northern schools teaches none4 ,the government will stand by all people who stand for justice1 and it will see that justice will be dealt to all people in ,america who have played their part as a race or nation1 because ,god loves us all1 regardless to creed or color4 ,now1 allow me to make an open confession1 as the ,lord says it is good for the soul4 ,my forty-five years of dealing with the white man and his families1 in the ,south and ,north4 ,i have found that they have met me half way4 ,they have held out their hand to me1 as if to say1 come on1 you can walk4 ,they have taken things from me1 that ,i would not take from them4 ,they have tried to help me to walk1 but ,i was not smart enough to understand4 ,we as a race1 have let golden opportunities slip by1 being too stiff-neck to take heed4 ,the love1 that the white men and women have for our wives1 causes us men to get work to buy bread to eat and a house to live in4 ,the black women have power with ,god1 and the blessings of the world lies in her4 ,in this work for which ,i have given up my life for the last twenty years1 ,i came to my own people1 but they received me not1 then there was nothing for me to do1 but go to the white man and his families4 ,from door to door with my vision1 and the analysis of my work4 ,i explained it to them just as ,i saw it4 ,they saw my honest desire1 and they held out their hands to me1 and said1 come on1 you can walk4 ,they are as yet meeting me half way1 and ,i began to walk4 ,nine souls out of every ten have a kind word for me1 and at times it has gone farther than money4 ,some of them would say1 my son1 ,i don't see where ,i can help you now1 but1 you have a good work1 and ,i appreciate it1 you call again4 ,some of the gentlemen would call up their neighbors and tell them that ,i was all right1 and to give me a dollar1 and before ,i could open my mouth1 he would send me out a dollar or more4 ,some of the ladies when ,i saw them in their homes or businesses1 when they were not prepared to help my work1 would say1 ,my ,dear ----1 ,i am awfully sorry that ,i cannot help you today1 but ,i will send you a small check4 ,her kind words fill me with the spirit of come on1 you can walk4 ,to encourage me1 ,i have had business men and women let me look into their cash registers--make me look in them4 ,men turn their pockets inside out to let me see that they have no change1 others go out and borrow money for me1 that is telling me to come on1 you can walk4 ,the same white people will tell you to come1 you can walk4 ,try it1 they will meet you fifty-fifty1 but they have no time for shiftless or lazy black people4 ,they want you to be a man or woman to your word4 ,if they can put confidence in you1 they will do anything for you1 some of them will give up their life for you1 but we must be honest to them and give them a square deal1 not an eye servant4 ,if you are working for them1 give them justice1 then they are compelled to do the same by you4 ,my friend1 the progress of the race lies in the young white boys and girls4 ,i have never met a more friendly people than the young men in their business4 ,they have not much money to give1 but they have that hospitality1 that friendly smile which is home-like4 ,the young ladies at their desks trying to make an honest living1 they all have a kind word for you1 and a beautiful smile for you which makes you feel like you have something to live for4 ,i have an interview with a thousand white men and women every month4 ,i can honestly say that not one out of the thousand has tried to insult me or try to take advantage of me because ,i am a member of the black race1 the ancient ,jews4 ,some of the working girls open their bags and give me from twenty-five cents to a dollar for my work4 ,some contribute a smile of regret because they have no money1 but that smile is worth as much as a dollar to me4 ,it says come on1 you can walk1 and my heart goes out with the ,god of ,heaven's blessing on such people4 ,i feel sorry for them1 they cannot help what their fathers and mothers have done to us4 ,it is not their fault that we have been made slaves of1 and yet are to the nations of the world1 but we as a race of people should obey the law and live clean and respectable1 so our friends can uphold us to our enemies and demand respect for us4 ,when we as a people don't live the high morals with self respect1 then our enemies use that to keep us down and our friends cannot say a word for us1 they only can say get up and walk1 our hands are open to you4 ,the trouble with this race is1 that they are suffering for the want of true racial leadership4 ,we want leaders to agitate the spirit to produce4 ,if the white man was to pass a law that the black man either had to build factories or go naked1 or say give us back our clothes we sold you1 and here is your money that the government made1 or1 if you want your pork chops1 buy your farms1 raise your hogs1 flour and meal1 we would be pretty bad off4 ,we want leaders who will show us how to produce something1 so we can free ourselves from being dependent on our good white brothers4 ,somewhere in this world1 the ,god of ,heaven has left us our inheritance1 let us find it1 but we must put down these sorry cowardly leaders1 and pick up real men4 ,our white friends are not going to bother along with us much longer1 because they have trouble of their own4 ,when you have only a ten dollar a week job1 and live the life of a twenty dollar a week man1 there is not much sympathy that you can demand from any one4 ,i also want to thank my personal friends of my race4 ,they are true to me and this work4 ,they have given me dollars when they need them for themselves4 ,they have fought many a battle for me1 they trust me4 ,they have also given notes on their homes to raise money for me to go on with this work4 ,i can never forget them4 ,again ,i thank them1 and the ,god of ,heaven will bless them for their righteous works4 ,should the ,color ,line ,go8 ,by ,,robert ,,watson ,,winston ,the tendency to hide the facts about the negro problem--,no real freedom for colored people in the ,south--,migration of the negroes to a country of their own is the solution suggested 8,reprinted by special permission from ,current ,history ,magazine1 a monthly periodical published by ,,the ,,new ,,york ,,times ,,co40 ,born at ,windsor1 ,north ,carolina1 ,mr4 ,winston is a leading lawyer of his native ,state4 ,he was graduated from the ,university of ,north ,carolina and received the degree of ,,ll4 ,d4 from ,wake ,forest ,college4 ,he was a ,judge of the ,superior ,court of ,north ,carolina from #ahhi to #ahie1 when he resigned4 ,he is a well-known orator and also an authority on ,southern problems4 ,by what authority do ,i speak on this vexed subject of race relationship in the ,south8 ,for more than two centuries my people have lived in the ,south1 and ,i myself am a ,southern man4 ,my father was a ,whig1 a thorough-going ,union man1 and opposed to secession4 ,he followed ,mr4 ,webster and not ,mr4 ,calhoun4 ,in #ahfa1 when one year of age1 ,i became the owner by will of a three-fourths interest in five negro slaves4 ,i sucked the breast of a negro woman1 listened to the wonderful tales of my father's slaves1 rode 8horse0 on their backs1 swam and fished with them1 and ate their ash cake in the cabin4 ,the negro1 ,i think1 is my friend2 ,i know ,i am his4 ,thus ,i ought to be impartial4 ,why do we of the ,south refuse to admit the facts1 and when some blunt fellow1 like the late ,senator ,tillman1 blurts out the truth1 why do we straightway fall to denying and disclaiming8 ,on the other hand1 why do few people outside the ,south seem to understand or care what consequences will follow the destruction of the caste system upheld by a color line so rigidly drawn8 ,a certain inexorable race law should be kept in mind if one would understand the magnitude of the issue involved3 ,no two homogeneous races will long continue to exist side by side in the same country on terms of perfect equality without race-blending4 ,one is prone to think of miscegenation as a thing foreign to the ,united ,states1 and yet ethnologists generally declare that such blending between whites and blacks will take place1 and that the ,southern ,states will eventually become mulatto4 ,shortly after the close of the ,civil ,war miscegenation societies were organized and leading abolitionists1 ,theodore ,tilton and ,wendell ,phillip among others1 advocated mixed marriages4 ,about this time also the ,north ,british ,review1 in a calm statement1 concluded that not only ,england and ,europe1 but ,africa1 would be represented in the new race which was growing up in the ,new ,world4 ,a few years ago ,colonel ,roosevelt1 in letters to ,the ,outlook1 told of the rising tide of color in ,central ,america--the fusing of whites and blacks into a mulatto civilization2 how a prosperous negro would marry an impecunious white woman1 how the male offspring would repeat the process1 so that1 after two or three generations1 they would become a white family4 ,and similar conditions exist today in ,cuba1 ,brazil1 ,mexico1 ,portugal and the ,french colonies1 where marriages between whites and blacks are well nigh universal4 ,schults in 8,race or ,mongrel0 declares that 8if conditions that now exist continue nothing need be done with the negro2 the problem will solve itself4 ,the immigration of ,southern mongrels is ingrafting more and more negro blood in our veins40 ,to the same effect is ,hoffman's 8,racial ,traits and ,tendencies03 8,the process is now rapidly going on and the black race will be absorbed2 a condition which1 though unpopular1 is not unwelcome to many thinkers40 ,document #ahh of the ,carnegie ,foundation has valuable data showing universal race-blending in ,jamaica and ,bermuda4 ,sir ,sidney ,olivier1 ,governor of ,jamaica1 advocates the blending of whites and blacks 8as a buffer to prevent race conflict40 ,in ,volume #gi of the ,popular ,science ,monthly he takes the ground that 8we must make our account for a legitimate and honorable interblending between whites and blacks1 and must look upon it not as an evil but as an advantage10 adding that 8the black race is everywhere eager to mix with the white race40 ,viscount ,bryce asserts that 8the ,brazilian lower classes intermarry freely with the black people1 the ,brazilian middle classes intermarry with mulattoes and quadroons02 and intimates that three-fourths white is white enough for ,brazilians and ,portuguese4 ,the ,journal of ,heredity1 ,october1 #aiaf1 contains a statement by ,maynard ,w4 ,metcalf that the union of the races is inevitable2 and to the same effect speak the ,literary ,digest of ,october1 #aiag1 and the ,century ,magazine of ,march1 #aijc4 ,in the 8,future of ,evolution0 race-blending in the ,south is taken for granted2 the ,mercure de ,france for ,august1 #aibb1 finds much hope for ,france from an infusion of ,african blood1 declaring that the ,french people betray no antipathy to the color of the men from ,algeria1 ,morocco or ,tunis2 and that all are 8welded into lasting ,french cement10 a condition vouched for by our soldiers returning from ,france4 ,illustration3 ,,robert ,,watson ,,winston 7,white7 ,formerly ,judge of the ,superior ,court of ,north ,carolina ,reuter in 8,the ,mulatto in the ,united ,states0 implies that race-blending will take place if the color line and race segregation are not maintained3 8,where no color line has been formally drawn against them they have tended to ally themselves with the superior race--during the process of reduction to a mongrel unity2 it is biracial adjustment that keeps them apart40 ,one writer has asserted that all religions come from the black race2 that extreme white and extreme black are departures1 and that ,adam1 as his name signifies1 was made of red earth4 ,we must conclude1 therefore1 that eventually the two races in ,america will blend if they be placed on social and political equality1 and if they are in fact homogeneous4 ,are ,southern whites and blacks socially and politically equal8 ,are they homogeneous8 ,and now we touch the first sore spot4 ,we of the ,south generally maintain that the negro is a free man1 and that the law bears on white and black alike1 when we must know that this is not the fact4 ,is a man free who cannot vote1 hold office or serve on the jury2 is he free when he must ride in second-class coaches1 sit in the gallery at public places1 occupy rear seats of electric cars and flee for his life when suspected of being a dangerous character8 ,is a race free which has been battered into submission by whippings and lynchings1 and which has no part in governmental affairs8 ,can man or race be free with a spirit in chains8 ,and does it lie in the mouth of the white man to charge that the negro is but a race of bootblacks1 when we have confined him to the task of blacking our boots8 ,,facing ,,the ,,facts ,we are not now considering whether these things should or should not be2 we are merely asserting that in the 8,black ,belt0 they are4 ,and they are for a definite1 a fixed purpose4 ,as in slavery days it was necessary in order to perpetuate the institution to make it a crime to teach a slave to read or write1 in other words to elevate him so that he could realize his condition of slavery1 so in the far ,south today in order to maintain the present servile condition of the negro it is necessary to put him under foot and to keep him under foot4 ,whippings1 lynchings1 burnings--these represent the color line in crimson2 and the color line1 as a recent writer points out1 is but evidence 8of an attempt based on intuitive choice to preserve those distinctive values which a racial group has come to regard as of the highest moment to itself40 ,the great industrial awakening in the ,south is made possible by this supposedly permanent settlement of the race issue1 for the color line properly enforced need not interfere with business--at all4 ,are the two races homogeneous8 ,they are1 undoubtedly4 ,some time about #ahab on the border line of two great ,southern ,states there lived a ,presbyterian preacher named ,john ,chavis1 8admired for his noble qualities as a gentleman1 revered for his fervent piety as a ,christian1 respected for his eminent ability as a teacher and preacher40 ,he had been a student at ,princeton under ,dr4 ,witherspoon4 ,opening a classical school in an aristocratic ,southern community1 he was patronized by the best people and became the preceptor of future ,senators1 ,governors1 and financiers2 this man was a negro1 a free negro--8without any white blood in his veins40 ,about five feet seven inches in height1 he was robust and corpulent1 having a round1 clean shaven face expressive of great benevolence4 ,the pupils boarded in his home1 and in their home he was a welcome guest4 ,because of the ,nat ,turner insurrection in #ahcb he and other free negroes were forbidden by law to preach1 and from that time until his death he was supported by a ,southern ,presbytery4 ,this is an isolated case to be sure1 but it is portentous4 ,are not two races homogeneous which have lived together in peace for a hundred years1 speaking the same language1 worshipping the same ,god1 having similar church affiliations1 impelled by similar superstitions and prejudices1 the weaker race imitating the stronger in customs1 manners1 and modes of thought8 ,anyway1 if the races are not homogeneous1 how comes it that there are so many mulattoes in the ,south8 ,in #aiaj one-fifth of the negro population was mulatto4 ,we are about to uncover another skeleton in the closet3 sexual relations once existed in the ,south between white men and mulatto women1 a condition which persisted until some time after the ,civil ,war4 ,during the period of slavery and up to about #ahgf sexual relations between the races was frequent4 ,neither comment nor sense of shame was entailed by what went on among white youths and colored girls4 ,nor was it uncommon at that time for white men to keep negro women and to rear children4 ,many a colored woman was proud to be the plaything of the white man1 whose passion she gratified without restraint or responsibility4 ,public sentiment did not condemn the practice4 ,before #ahgf there was no public sentiment on the subject1 neither was there race consciousness nor conflict2 and the unhappy offspring could rise no higher than the color of the mother4 ,once a negro1 always a negro4 ,,changes ,,in ,,sexual ,,relations ,after about #ahgf sexual intercourse between the races gradually decreased1 and today has practically stopped4 ,the law sustained by public sentiment condemns the practice1 which has become a badge of shame4 ,one would naturally expect the census table to reflect this change in race relationship1 and it does4 ,in #aiaj1 in a group of #ajj negroes1 as we have seen1 #bj1 or one in five1 were mulattoes1 whereas in #aibj the proportion was one in six1 or #af mulattoes in a group of #ajj negroes4 ,but bloody revolutions1 much legislation forbidding race intercourse of any kind1 innumerable race riots1 lynchings and burnings in the 8,black ,belt10 together with the white womanhood of the ,south--all these were required to separate the two homogeneous races4 ,the ,roosevelt letters made a lasting impression on the ,south4 ,these letters describing the process of race-blending showed how the crossing of white and mulatto produced a quadroon2 the crossing of quadroon with white person produced an octoroon2 the crossing of octoroon with white person produced a person called 8passing for white02 and the crossing of 8passing for white0 with pure white produced 8fixed white10 and after 8fixed white0 there was no further reversion to black color4 ,the total population of the ,united ,states is about #ajf1jjj1jjj1 of which #aj1ejj1jjj are negroes4 ,it is interesting to note that of these #aj1ejj1jjj negroes about #h1ccc1jjj reside in ,southern territory4 ,that is to say1 in the fourteen ,south ,atlantic1 ,east ,south ,central and ,west ,south ,central ,states 7omitting ,west ,virginia1 ,oklahoma and ,kentucky71 there are #h1ccc1jjj blacks and #ai1jjj1jjj whites4 ,on the other hand1 in ,northern territory there are #ga1jjj1jjj whites and #a1ejj1jjj blacks4 ,in other words1 in the thirty-two ,northeastern1 ,middle ,atlantic1 ,east ,north ,central1 ,west ,north ,central1 ,mountain and ,pacific ,states the white population is #ga1jjj1jjj1 while the negro population is #a1ejj1jjj4 ,if it were possible at the present time to blend the races1 ,southern people would have more than one-third colored blood in their veins and less than two-thirds white blood1 and ,northern people would have about #c per cent colored blood and #ig per cent white4 ,moreover1 if amalgamation were to take place now1 the whole of ,south ,carolina and ,mississippi and half of ,georgia1 ,florida1 ,alabama and ,louisiana would grade about #ej per cent negro blood and #ej per cent white4 ,the ,north1 on the other hand1 would grade about #c per cent colored blood and #ig per cent white1 a mixture well within the rule of 8fixed white02 whereas the ,southern mixture would not reach the grade of 8passing for white10 the offspring of such persons being subject to the law of reversion to color4 ,it is not possible to place ,southern whites and blacks on terms of social and political equality as soon as the blacks are fitted for citizenship1 as many philanthropic organizations are now insisting1 because the ,southern white man is tenacious of his rights and on this subject is regardless of consequences4 ,with him a white man's government means a white man's government4 ,if ,congress should pass a ,force ,bill and undertake to put it into operation1 the ,irish upheaval would be a mild affair in comparison with conditions in the ,southern ,states4 ,either the white man would exterminate the negro1 or the negro would exterminate the white man4 ,the white man will brook no peer4 ,it is not a question of whether the negro is a good citizen or a bad citizen2 it is deeper than this2 it has to do with race integrity1 race autonomy4 ,so long as the negro 8behaves himself0 in the ,south he is safe4 ,but once let him cross the dead line of race separation and endeavor to assert his manhood rights and he becomes a menace to the existing order of things1 after the manner of ,john ,brown at ,harper's ,ferry4 ,with hat in hand1 the ,southern negro is more than safe1 he is happy--if he is that kind of negro4 ,for his sake and in memory of the old-time 8darkey0 schools1 hospitals and orphanages have been set on foot4 ,nothing1 indeed1 is too good for him4 ,a tender1 patient relationship exists between this unambitious1 likable creature and the white people of the ,south4 ,this white man's negro gets all that he is entitled to and often more in the courts1 as a domestic on the farm1 with trowel or hammer4 ,the white man who undertakes to impose on a white man's negro has his hands full4 ,many years' experience as a ,circuit ,judge enables me to declare that in the ,court ,house ,i never witnessed an act of injustice to such a negro--who does not desire rights1 social or political1 and could not be induced to leave 8his ol' white folks40 ,but what of that increasing number of negroes who are not the white man's negroes1 and what of the widening gulf between races8 ,has the situation improved since the return of negro soldiers in khaki from ,france1 where the black man from ,algeria was a favorite of the ,parisian drawing rooms1 a recipient of the voluptuous white woman's favors8 ,did ,siki's victory over ,carpentier give a new turn to the race question1 as ,the ,boston ,herald asserts8 ,is it true1 as literature of 8new negro0 type declares1 that race war and revolution must presently follow if conditions continue and race segregation be insisted upon8 ,perhaps not4 ,but so ,the ,crisis is teaching and so one reads in 8,the ,souls of the ,black ,folks10 8,the ,voice of the ,negro10 8,dark ,water10 8,the ,black ,dispatch10 and like publications4 ,the negro ,leckey thinks that 8race separation and distinctions are a spiritual lynching and that the negro must feel that he is a cursed1 knee-bending slave1 bound and shackled by laws and customs made for slaves40 ,and the 8new negro's0 call to battle1 how clear it is4 ,let us hear it3 ,oh6 kinsman we must meet the common foe2 ,though far outnumbered1 let us still be brave2 ,and for their thousand blows1 deal one death blow6 ,what though before us lies the open grave1 ,like men we'll face the cowardly1 murderous pack1 ,pressed to the wall--dying--but fighting back4 ,why is the negro not right8 ,self determination is of ,god1 not of man4 ,but the black race must not underrate the task4 ,they are lined up against descendants of men who fought a four years' war against the world without salt1 shoes or powder1 and whose courage and endurance no man questions4 ,men of the ,south place race integrity above politics1 property1 religion1 or life itself4 ,the ,south alone among nations is today making a fight against a universal ethnological law of race-blending4 ,the mistake is in not boldly admitting the facts1 flinging defiance to the future1 spurning representation based on negro population in the electoral college4 ,,the ,,solution ,this1 then1 is the line-up4 ,can actual warfare be avoided8 ,i think that it can4 ,there is nothing strange or alarming about the situation4 ,the negro desires to be free and he is right4 ,the white man claims that the ,south is his to rule and control1 and he1 too1 is right4 ,but a head-on collision need not come from every paradox4 ,while man has busied himself in the endeavor to solve matters1 in the wrong way1 the ,god of nations seems to have taken a hand1 pointing the way of escape1 even as ,he pointed it out to ,abraham and ,lot in the land of ,bethel3 8,and ,abraham said unto ,lot1 let there be no strife1 ,i pray thee1 between me and thee4 ,separate thyself1 ,i pray thee1 from me40 ,even so today is ,god moving the black man to separate himself from the ,southern white man1 and1 by the thousands1 are negroes leaving the ,south4 ,let the census tables again speak4 ,the white population of the ,united ,states in the last four decades has increased #ajj per cent1 while the negro population in the same period has increased but #dj per cent4 ,in the far ,south during the decade #aiaj-aibj the negro population either stood still or diminished4 ,alabama and ,mississippi having #h1jjj and #ge1jjj fewer negroes respectively in #aibj than in #aiaj4 ,the way out1 therefore1 is to change our mental attitude on this subject and vitalize every legitimate movement for negro migration ,north1 ,east and ,west4 ,let those ,states welcoming the negroes to equal rights make known the fact1 opening wide their doors1 and negroes will continue to leave the ,south as they are now doing1 in great numbers1 thus relieving race friction4 ,undoubtedly the ,southern ,states should cooperate in the movement1 instantly repealing such laws as impose fine and imprisonment on emigration agents and giving up negro labor for the general welfare4 7,the only good of the ,ku ,klux is to frighten negroes from ,southern ,states to other sections--and this is unintentional47 ,organizations and associations for race betterment1 heretofore assuming that the race issue must be settled in the ,south and not elsewhere1 have given little attention to negro migrations1 which have been haphazard affairs conducted along business and not along racial lines4 ,with intelligent and sympathetic direction negro migration will be greatly accelerated2 and then1 but not till then1 the 8,solid ,south0 with all its embarrassing consequences will cease to be4 ,but ,i go further4 ,were ,i a negro1 facing the future1 concerned about children and children's children1 ,i would cease to fight against white prejudice1 but raising the banner of 8,pan-,africa10 ,i would herald that 8,unity of the ,colored ,races1 sensed by far-seeing negroes10 as ,dr4 ,burghardt ,du ,bois phrases it1 until my last breath4 ,and why shall not the ,national ,government sponsor negro exodus1 making ready a suitable home for the race8 ,president ,lincoln recommended colonization 8in some place or places of suitable climate02 ,president ,grant recommended to ,congress colonization on the ,island of ,santo ,domingo4 ,why may not ,french ,guinea and ,sierra ,leone be added to ,liberia1 creating an ample fatherland for such ,afro-,americans as choose to go8 ,but has not colonization in ,liberia failed8 ,by no means2 it has never been given a trial4 ,in the '#gjs a ship with about one thousand negro emigrants sailed from ,savannah for ,liberia4 ,standing amid #aj1jjj of his race and raising his black face heavenward1 ,bishop ,turner prayed that ,god would safely speed the little craft to a land where the color of a man's skin was not a crime4 ,ten thousand negro voices sobbed 8,amen02 an aged colored woman shouted for very joy4 ,what has been ,america's attitude to such heroic incidents8 ,either indifference or disapproval and ridicule4 ,our colonization societies have ceased to function1 and we give no further thought to ,liberia1 being content that the negro shall remain in the ,south1 8a people within a people40 ,shall we not1 ,i earnestly ask1 speedily revive the old colonization society1 send another ,goethals with means and equipment and make ,liberia as healthy as ,panama--and above all1 shall we not tell the truth about ,liberia8 ,plucky little republic1 at our request1 she jumped into the great war and lost shipping and commerce2 her towns were shelled by ,german gunboats1 and yet the ,united ,states is haggling about making a loan of #e1jjj1jjj1 promised by ,president ,wilson and recommended by ,president ,harding4 ,during the present year a ,british commission after nine months' travel reported to its ,government that in the three essentials--climate1 productivity and health 7with proper attention7--,africa is the most favored of continents1 that it possesses marvelous flora1 wonderful water-power1 fertile soil1 extensive mineral deposits1 abundant hardwood4 ,in the face of discouragement1 #ajj1jjj civilized negroes1 of whom about #ab1jjj are ,american ,christian immigrants and their descendants1 now reside on the ,liberian littoral2 and ,monrovia1 its capital1 has a population of #f1jjj souls4 ,a railroad running from ,monrovia #aej miles up the ,st4 ,paul ,river1 across waterfalls and into the hinterland1 would open up a garden spot1 with lowlands superior to our far ,south1 with uplands equal in climate and elevation to our ,north ,atlantic ,states4 ,as soon as we but make a co-operative start toward negro migration and colonization and cease the vain attempt to pour two gallons of water into a one-gallon vessel--to bestow citizenship upon the negro in the ,south--his condition will improve4 ,what satisfaction does not get from reading documents like 8,the ,negroes' ,progress in ,fifty ,years08 ,of what avail are houses1 land or education1 forsooth1 to one in a state of bondage8 ,better ignorance and poverty for him4 ,shall the promise be kept to the ear and broken to the hope8 ,i cannot agree with ,mecklen1 in 8,democracy and ,race ,conflict10 that the race question is essentially insoluble4 ,the negroes are tractable and1 looking upon themselves as a 8peculiar people10 will follow such course as their leaders may map out for the 8race02 a course which should be thought out1 it must again be insisted1 not along the impossible1 makeshift lines of racial equality in the ,south1 but in the quite opposite direction and in terms of hundreds of years4 ,while permanent plans are under way1 every energy should be exerted to educate and fit the negro for a new1 a saner life under ampler skies4 ,america may not justify herself at the ,final ,assize until she lives up to the truth that the white man is right1 that the negro is also right1 and that of these two contradictions neither is wrong4 ,will the ,black ,man ,go ,back to ,his ,country1 ,africa8 ,in order for me1 in my book1 to answer you that question1 ,i will have to take up the words of ,god's prophets1 because they can answer that question better than ,i4 ,for this reason ,i will call your attention to prophet ,amos1 #c3g4 ,surely the ,lord ,god will do nothing but to reveal his secrets to his servants the prophets4 ,in this chapter1 your question will be answered1 send back the stolen goods1 for justice is on your trail4 ,god has promised through his prophet ,ezechial #cf2 #bd3bh3cb4 ,for ,i will take you from among the heathen1 and gather you out of all countries1 and will bring you into your own land4 ,and ye shall dwell in the land that ,i gave to your fathers1 and ye shall be my people and ,i will be your ,god4 ,not for your sake do ,i do this1 saith the ,lord1 be it known unto you be ashamed and confounded for your own ways1 ,o house of ,israel4 ,ezek4 #cf2 #e3i4 ,therefore thus saith the ,lord ,god4 ,surely in the fire of my jealousy have ,i spoken against the residue of the heathen and against all ,idumea1 which have appointed my land into their possession with the joy of all their heart1 with despiteful minds1 to cast it out for a prey4 ,for behold1 ,i am for you and ,i will turn unto you1 and ye shall be tilled and sown4 ,now my friends1 if the ,lord ,god of ,israel says that we ,black ,jews shall go back to our own land1 no one can stop it4 ,the nations must give up their stolen goods4 ,now the ,god of ,heaven and ,earth is directing the minds of the good white people1 they are coming together1 and giving justice to all people1 so the curses may be raised up off of them4 ,the black man wilt soon come into his own4 ,now my friends1 whether ,i want to or not1 ,i am compelled to present to you at this period in my book--at two o'clock1 a4 m41 ,jan4 #ag1 #aibe--the spirit of ,god made me get up out of bed1 and write the truth1 whether the world likes it or not4 ,i have the honor to present to you one of the greatest black men that ever lived on earth1 and the greatest in these last days4 ,the honorable ,marcus ,garvey1 president of the ,universal ,negro ,improvement ,association4 ,he has the spirit of ,ezechial and the vision that ,god gave him4 ,allow me to present to you the words of ,god1 and this man1 ,marcus ,garvey is in the same shoes4 ,first ,i want to call your attention to ,numbers #ab3f1 and if there be a prophet among you1 ,i the ,lord will make myself known unto him in a vision and will speak unto him in a dream4 ,my friends1 this is not the first prophet that the ,lord has sent among the so-called ,american ,negro4 ,in nineteen hundred1 ,god sent us ,prophet ,william ,s4 ,crowdy1 and he got two hundred and eighty thousand who keep the seventh day ,sabbath and the ,passover1 and set up the ,church of ,god and the ,saints of ,christ1 and the ,black ,israel fought it until they stopped his progress2 then the ,lord ,god of ,israel took him down before he finished his work4 ,the carnal part he never finished4 ,he was an old man--he gave up the ghost and left us without material and racial leader4 ,so the ,lord ,god has sent us this man1 known to the world as ,marcus ,garvey1 and the stiff necks of ,israel have gone after him with sticks and stones1 but it is their last chance4 ,now ,i shall put this man in ,ezechial's shoes1 that you may see him and be blessed if you stop fighting his works1 for it is none other than the works of ,god4 ,now allow me to direct your thoughts to ,prophet ,isaiah #ee2 #g3h3i3aa4 ,let the wicked forsake his way1 and the unrighteous man1 his thoughts1 and let him return unto the ,lord he will have mercy upon him1 and to our ,god1 for he will abundantly pardon4 ,for my thoughts are not your thoughts1 neither are your ways my ways1 saith the ,lord4 ,for as the heavens are higher than the earth1 so are my ways higher than your ways1 and my thoughts higher than your thoughts4 ,so shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth1 it shall not return unto me void1 but it shall accomplish that which ,i please and it shall prosper in the thing wherever ,i send it4 ,so we are as foolish galatians1 have been bewitched by others1 trying to turn white1 trying to take this government by politics1 and the white man's education1 which is destruction to ,black ,israel4 ,this is ,god talking to ,garvey4 ,ezekiel #ab2 #a3b3c4 ,and he said unto me1 son of man1 stand upon thy feet1 and ,i will speak unto thee4 ,and the spirit entered into me1 when he spoke unto me1 and set me upon my feet1 that ,i heard him that spoke unto me4 ,and he said unto me1 son of man1 ,i send thee to the children of ,israel1 to a rebellious nation that has rebelled against me2 they and their fathers have transgressed against me unto this very day4 ,now my friends1 you know we black people as a nation have obeyed every nation in this world except ,god4 ,through his commandments which were handed down to us by the nations1 and all the ,god that we know is the ,god that they have told us about1 and we as a nation are obeying the ,gods of this world1 and fighting the ,god of ,israel4 ,ezek4 #b2 #d4 ,for they are impertinent children and stiff hearted4 ,i do send unto them and thou shall say unto them1 thus saith the ,lord ,god4 ,and they1 whether they will hear or whether they will forbear1 for they are a rebellious house1 yet they shall know that there has been a prophet among them4 ,allow me to ask the question1 why is this man ,garvey so bold and not afraid of anyone nor death4 ,the ignorant men judge him to be boisterous1 or a bully like themselves1 because they do not know ,god and his works1 the vision was not given to them4 ,ezekiel #b2 #f4 ,and thou1 son of man1 be not afraid of them1 neither be afraid of their words1 though briers and thorns be with thee and thou doest dwell amongst scorpions1 be not afraid of their words1 or be dismayed at their looks1 though they be a rebellious house2 #g4 ,and thou shall speak my words unto them1 whether they will hear or whether they will forbear1 for they are most rebellious4 ,but thou1 son of man1 hear what ,i say unto thee1 be not thou rebellious1 like that rebellious house1 open thy mouth and eat what ,i give thee4 ,now my friends1 ,mr4 ,garvey has opened his mouth and has eaten the word of ,god1 so he has got to do what ,god tells him2 and it is strange to the people because it is not their ways1 and the leaders of the people to try to hold them from this back to ,africa movement1 but the ,lord ,god said they shall go1 not all of the old mothers and fathers2 they shall stay here and in their homes all over the world1 but the young men and women will go to build up a government for themselves1 so that we may be represented all over the world as a nation of people governing themselves1 and not looking up to another nation1 and their ,god to lead us1 or to exploit us and keep us in ignorance4 ,ezekiel #c2 #ee4 ,for thou art not sent to a people of a strange speech and of a hard tongue1 language1 but to the house of ,israel4 ,but the house of ,israel will not hearken unto thee1 for they will not hearken unto me1 for all the house of ,israel are impudent and hard-hearted4 ,behold ,i have made thy face strong against their face and thy forehead strong against their foreheads4 ,as an adamant harder than flint have ,i made their forehead4 ,fear them not1 neither be dismayed at their looks1 though they be a rebellious house4 ,moreover1 he said unto me1 son of man1 all my words that ,i shall speak unto thee receive in thine heart1 and hear with thine ears4 ,and go get thee to them of the captivity1 unto the children1 of thy people1 and speak unto them and tell them4 ,thus saith the ,lord ,god1 whether they will hear or whether they will forebear2 #ag4 ,son of man1 ,i have made thee a watchman unto the house of ,israel1 therefore hear the word at my mouth and give them warning from me4 ,why does this great man go into politics8 ,why does a dog go into the swamp and the man with the gun stay on the outside8 ,mr4 ,garvey goes into politics to run you out of the white man's business1 and to beat you at your own game4 ,he knows if you continue to dabble in the white man's business1 when you are only parasites in their country1 that you will put a man of a class of men in office who will see that we as a race will have to pack up and get out1 because we are noisy4 ,they will say1 go to your own country and build yourself a government of your own1 and all you want4 ,if you know how to run our government or how it ought to be run1 you can run one for yourselves1 so go to it4 ,for myself1 ,i have not voted in twenty years4 ,i have all ,i can do1 to obey the laws that are made by the white man in this country1 and all of them respect me because ,i keep out of their business4 ,how does this man ,garvey know all things1 how to unite seven million black people all over the world8 ,the white man did not tell him1 but he has done it4 ,let us search the holy scripture and find out4 ,the secret comes from ,god1 let us see ,job #bh2 #ab4 ,but where shall wisdom be found and where is the place of understanding4 #bh4 ,and unto man he said4 ,behold the fear of the ,lord1 that is the beginning of wisdom and to depart from evil is understanding4 ,this man is one who loves the ,lord1 and when the ,lord ,god picks a man to make a watchman out of him1 he gives him wisdom4 ,let me get another witness1 ,psalm #aaa2 #aj4 ,the fear of the ,lord is in the beginning of wisdom1 a good understanding have all they that do his commandments1 his praise endureth forever4 ,let us find another witness1 ,st4 ,john #g2 #ag4 ,if any man will do his will1 he shall know of the doctrine1 whether it be of ,god or whether ,i speak of myself4 ,this man has but one desire and that is to free a people who are crying to him for help all over the world4 ,not only does ,god give out this wisdom and understanding to ,mr4 ,garvey1 but to all men and women who do his will4 ,unless you do the will of ,god1 you cannot understand this great man4 ,he is too far ahead of you1 and you can only trust his word4 ,have faith in him and you will be all right4 ,allow me to direct your thoughts back to the greatest of all prophets1 that man is ,jesus ,christ4 ,st4 ,john #h2 #ca3cb4 ,then said ,jesus to those ,jews which believe in him1 if you continue in my word1 then are you my disciples indeed4 ,and ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free4 ,it is the truth that destroyeth the carnal mind1 which keeps you blind1 so you cannot see the hand of ,god working through the ,universal ,negro ,improvement ,association1 and it is only love that opens your eyes that you may see4 ,all humanity has to get love1 regardless to creed or color4 ,let us see what prophet ,jesus says about it1 as you say you are following him4 ,matthew #e2 #dc3dd4 ,we have heard that it hath been said thou shalt love thy neighbor and hate thine enemy4 ,but ,i say unto you1 love your enemy1 do good unto them that hate you1 bless them that curse you and pray for them who despitefully use you and persecute you4 ,now my dear reader1 love is the only hope for us to get back to our country4 ,it is the only way to world peace1 the only thing that will make the nations lay down the sword1 it will bring peace to your home4 ,love is the only thing that will destroy charity institutions1 insane asylums and prisons1 and we would have no need for hospitals4 ,love for humanity is like an eating cancer1 it brings respect and demands respect of the high type4 ,it will demand that you give up everything that attempts to disgrace or destroy the temple of ,god4 ,it has power over the flesh and keeps it under subjection4 ,do ,god's commandments and you will never go wrong4 ,the ,unjust ,treatment to ,garvey ,on ,february #g1 #aibe at #b ,a4 ,m41 ,i was called out of my bed to warn you1 my people1 the ,black ,jews1 that you have caused the world to put in jail1 only to please you1 the man of ,god1 who is your children's saviour4 ,you as a race are cursed1 you shall never see ,africa1 but your children shall go4 ,this man1 ,marcus ,garvey1 has finished his work1 and it is well done4 ,he is now having a well needed rest4 ,he has only stepped in the shoes of ,moses and ,jeremiah1 who were put in jail1 put down into a well1 because they told the truth1 which condemns you ,black ,jews4 ,jesus ,christ was whipped and driven out of cities1 until he was almost starved4 ,at last he was rebuked by wicked men and women4 ,then lynched by white men because he dared to tell you ,black ,jews the truth4 ,in the #aeth century1 you were chained and brought to all nations and sold for two hundred and fifty years as slaves1 and suffered all kind of trouble4 ,then ,god raised up the good white people in your favor to help you to get free from the yoke of bondage all over the world4 ,mr4 ,abraham ,lincoln promised that if he ever got the chance he would hit slavery a hard blow4 ,the white people of ,america elected him to be president and he struck slavery a terrible blow4 ,he emancipated four million1 five hundred thousand so-called negroes1 and was killed for doing it4 ,now1 some of you mixed people are bucking the dead man and saying that he did not mean to free us4 ,whether he meant to or not1 he gave us guns and ammunition to help free ourselves1 and our fathers got on the job4 ,three weeks before he was killed1 he had promised ,frederick ,douglas1 our leader then1 that he would go before congress and present a bill that would demand one state in this country or send us back to ,africa4 ,we must have our name that we may know who we are1 and can serve our ,god4 ,our president1 ,garfield1 picked up our righteous issue1 and they assassinated him for telling the truth as he saw it4 ,our late president ,mc,kinley hit the righteous trail1 and spoke the truth as he saw it1 and they put him to sleep4 ,our late president1 ,roosevelt1 stepped out in the path of righteous1 and invited ,mr4 ,booker ,t4 ,washington to luncheon with him at the white house1 and when he was on his campaign in nineteen hundred and twelve they shot him4 ,when ,mr4 ,marcus ,garvey stepped out on the platform of righteousness1 they shot him twice while he was in his office1 but ,god spared him to rest a while in jail1 until the good-thinking white people set him free4 ,my open opinion of the man1 ,i know a crook when ,i see one and deal with him4 ,i was introduced to ,mr4 ,garvey in nineteen hundred and nineteen at the ,messiah ,baptist ,church in ,yonkers1 ,new ,york4 ,i was chosen to make the opening address on this night4 ,he organized a division in this church1 one of the finest colored churches in the ,state of ,new ,york1 and ,i was one of those who joined4 ,but this division went down through jealousy among its members4 ,then ,i watched ,mr4 ,garvey1 his officers and members and those who read his paper4 ,by doing this ,i found out where the trouble lay4 ,it was in his crooked officers4 ,nine out of every ten showed up at the conventions dishonest4 ,when ,mr4 ,garvey began to expose them1 they began to plot against him4 ,the worst of it all is1 that the majority of them all were preachers who were all in1 down and out4 ,i found the work of this organization in the bible4 ,in nineteen hundred and twenty-one1 ,i called my friends together in ,yonkers1 ,new ,york1 and laid the facts before them4 ,i suggested that they should organize a division of their own1 which they did4 ,i have been watching ,mr4 ,garvey from then until now4 ,my opinion of him is that he is one of the most honest men of all time1 with a big heart1 no jealousy toward any man4 ,i do not believe that ,mr4 ,garvey would entertain any evil thoughts4 ,he means good to all1 both white and black4 ,he is the best colored friend that the white man has4 ,he is only trying to take a great curse off of the white people that ,god is about to send on them1 because they won't let the ,black ,jews go back to ,africa4 ,he sees it and knows it4 ,i myself have seen the same thing4 ,the destruction is coming if these stiff neck black people are not sent from among you whites4 ,you must let them go and serve their ,god4 ,this is the road to peace and prosperity4 ,now my white and black friends1 this subject was written with a spirit of love1 for love is the only way1 and the only sources that the nations or races can get together4 ,moving picture shows the power of love4 ,they show every crooked step that the lover makes and its results4 ,this should be a warning to others1 that they should marry for love and not for money4 ,for true love is the only step to righteousness and honor4 ,without true love1 no man can respect his wife or no woman can respect her husband4 ,the vow which is made at the altar cannot be kept without true love4 ,money can not keep it4 ,let us marry because we love and we will be happy on this earth4 ,without it our life struggles are in vain4 ,the movies will help you1 if you go there to learn and not for a good time4 ,you will show respect for one who has true love in his heart4 ,i want to state here1 that ,i have made a round of a number of moving pictures1 and studied the characters1 and the power of love1 and the destruction of false love4 ,i am compelled to say1 that the movies are doing a lot of good now1 to mend up the broken hearts1 that some of the victims may start life over and count yourself unworthy of their love if you have not the true love in your heart4 ,you are the man or woman that is on your way to destruction1 whether it be a race or nation1 its leaders must be of true brotherly love for mankind1 for out of the mouths1 the heart speaketh4 ,down ,on the ,farm ,down on a farm in the south1 of the year of eighteen hundred and seventy-two1 ,i was born in ,louden ,county1 ,virginia4 ,son of a black1 who was bought by ,josh ,fletcher from a slave trader1 an ,englishman by the name of ,cook1 for about two or three thousand dollars4 ,the slave masters called him the buck4 ,if ,i had been born in the time of slavery by black ,jewish mother1 ,i would have been worth about one thousand dollars to my father's master1 but my mother was a mulatto and ,i was born free1 so-called4 ,now ,i am not worth thirty cents to any one4 ,they won't have me in jail unless some of my own people put me there4 ,twelve years of my life was spent on the farm4 ,my father taught me how to farm1 milk cows and do a man's work4 ,when between eleven and twelve years of age1 ,i sought the ,lord for three weeks and days4 ,i found him and he filled my heart with joy and love4 ,at the age of twenty-eight1 he called me from the world and ,i started to clean up4 ,i was a clean man1 sent to the world with this message1 ,the ,black ,jews4 ,the black boys do not need gymnastics to help make him a man4 ,he only needs to be on a farm and made to work a few years4 ,then he will be able to take care of himself4 ,the black man has got to get back to the place where he can produce the food he eats4 ,he has been forced off of the farms1 as these farms have been given to others1 to work1 who are not of the black race4 ,we must find a farm somewhere in this world that we may produce the things that we need4 ,illustration3 ,,haling ,,hank ,,lenht is ,a4 ,w4 ,,cook ,during my farm life1 ,god was preparing me for this day1 because he wanted to use me for a good work among my people4 ,after seven years of country school ,i came ,north and fell into the hands of a good ,english family in ,montclair1 ,new ,jersey4 ,they taught me how to do house work1 and gave me more schooling4 ,they left me lacking for nothing1 so ,i could make an honest living4 ,when ,i left them ,i was able to do any kind of domestic job4 ,in nineteen hundred ,i stepped out into the professional world1 and ,i saw the weak part of my life1 that was3 ,if ,i hoped to measure arms with my brother1 ,i must go back to school4 ,so1 in nineteen hundred and five1 ,i took a three years' course in a business college in ,newark1 ,new ,jersey1 and made good4 ,for the past ten years ,i have conversed with representatives of all races or nations of the world4 ,they talk freely with me1 and ,i am yet learning4 ,i don't know it all1 and my ears are still open4 ,this boy1 ,haling ,hank ,lenht has grown to a man of responsibility1 and has gained many friends among all nations1 because they can trust him4 ,in nineteen hundred and three ,i came before the world as professor ,a4 ,w4 ,cook1 a dancing master and a teacher of etiquette to my people4 ,at that time1 all the dancing that my people could do1 was jigging and buck and wing dancing4 ,i did that old stuff down on the farm4 ,so ,i made up my mind to teach my people a new kind of dancing1 the way the white people dance4 ,i went to a book store and bought a book on etiquette and a ball room guide4 ,i studied these books from cover to cover1 and when ,i opened my dance halls1 ,i was a success4 ,in #aijd ,i had dancing classes in different cities and towns4 ,every night except ,sunday night4 ,defending the ,honorable and ,graceful ,movements of ,dancing ,as it is so popular and brings happiness and joy1 when nothing else can1 to thousands of human beings1 if it is used in its proper place and in the right way4 ,it will do little or no harm4 ,when in sorrow or down cast1 dancing is a good medicine4 ,it gives you a stronger mind and a new determination4 ,you feel like you have something to live for1 and are able to meet the terrible struggle of life4 ,it drives the treacherous thought out of the being and makes room for happiness and kindness4 ,it also makes a man or woman proud1 honest1 honorable and respectable4 ,it gives power to command respect from every one4 ,can you keep the race from dancing8 ,never6 ,for it was handed down from ,god4 ,it is the race's nature to dance2 it was born to the art1 with music in every joint to give ,god praise4 ,disturb this happiness and you will find a monster within them4 ,what will you do about it8 ,they must dance4 ,teach them the proper way1 tell them the danger1 tell them they must not worship this gift1 for they should respect it and give praise to ,god for his blessings4 ,we should remember that these earthly blessings are from ,god4 ,we must know how and when to use them4 ,we as a race have reached the stage of life where we must begin to accept the good examples set by others1 as we are not yet leaders of the world4 ,it is preached from our pulpits and by the elder members of our secret societies1 that if you go to a dance1 reception1 or any place where dancing is allowed1 that you have no religion and are on your way to hell4 ,that style of preaching is an old chestnut tree and does not take effect on the race4 ,we have learned to love and serve ,god in an intelligent way4 ,our leaders must find a better and more substantial method in order to make any impression on the race4 ,the warning that is connected with this subject will not answer and they believe you not4 ,illustration3 ,,professor ,a4 ,w4 ,,cook ,if our churches believe that it is a great sin to dance1 why is it that they rent excursion trains1 dance halls and picnic grounds1 furnish the best of music1 and invite the members and friends to come and enjoy themselves8 ,all of the secret and ,christian societies give these great dances4 ,the question is easily answered4 ,they know if you go with the intention of respecting the place1 the people you mingle with and yourself1 there is no sin4 ,you have been blessed with strength and a clean mind to meet your friends with joy and happiness4 ,it has been stated that dancers and drunkards cling together4 ,this is not necessarily true1 because not many drunkards have a passion for dancing4 ,they are not allowed to mingle with respectable people4 ,without being trained properly1 it is difficult for one to glide over a waxed ball room floor even when sober4 ,proper ,training ,which bring joy1 happiness1 wealth1 long life and a resting place in the heaven above8 ,i will not picture to you the history of our great men and leaders who have climbed to the top rung of the ladder of life1 from the proper training1 and the great battles that have been won for ,god and man1 but a few needed points of our home life and ourselves1 because we have not this great power4 ,first1 we as a race do not know how to serve ,god and be a valued soldier and defend our race1 because we have not had the proper training4 ,we do not respect our country1 towns1 churches1 societies1 homes1 wives or husbands and our children do not respect us1 schools or teachers4 ,because a large majority of the race have not had the proper training4 ,this is a sad and serious question that ,i picture to you1 and without being remedied it will drag down the moral standard of ,israel and blot her out forever4 ,but with the powerful brain cultivated and that strong mind properly trained she will be as brave as ,david of old1 as powerful as a giant and a ,god-fearing citizen4 ,what power has proper training8 ,it has the power of the professional boxer who sidesteps many death blows1 which if landed1 would have blotted out his life forever1 but he played with his antagonist because he feared him not4 ,the great power of training was at his command4 ,the proper training only fits us and prepares us to meet the severe struggles of life1 and to overcome the terrible death blows that are delivered and struck at us4 ,we walk in his ring1 and we must be prepared to dodge his blows4 ,the ballrooms1 picnics and excursions are some of his strong blows1 because he strikes the untrained1 who cannot defend themselves4 ,the only way to dodge him is to train your boys and girls before they enter society or the ball room4 ,a boy or girl who goes to a public dance or picnic without a guardian or the proper training1 usually becomes the victim of some society shark4 ,if this shark can successfully drag the untrained party over the floor and make him think he is having a good time1 then he has fallen into the shark's power and is at his mercy1 and the parents have lost all control of the child4 ,nine out of ten never recover4 ,he may be like the bread that is cast upon the sea and tossed by the great waves4 ,perhaps he may have been picked up by a beautiful seagull1 only to be dropped to the filth of the earth1 or to the depths of an unfriendly sea4 ,to dodge this blow1 you must be trained by a professional who is of a good understanding1 knowing his business1 an honest and respectable ,god-fearing person of good standing4 ,during my twelve years' experience as a dancing master1 ,i discovered the foundation of the great sin which is connected to the great art of professional movement1 no dancing master has published4 ,they have not stopped to give a thought4 ,but for the sake of the people as a race1 ,i must picture the facts to you and trust ,god for the results4 ,the facts are a modifier to this subject4 ,as a race of people1 we have proved to the world that we must have music and public receptions1 and most of us have better than we can afford2 results are that our expense is beyond our income4 ,such being the case1 we do not stop to consider our ball room etiquette or the moral training of our guests4 ,we are glad enough to take a nickel or a dime1 regardless to his or her training4 ,we come out of our churches and societies and form a committee to give this reception1 as we call it4 ,some of us have never worked on a committee before4 ,you will send your child to a dance without the proper society training4 ,why8 ,because one of your church members is on the committee1 and he himself has not the proper training1 then how do you expect him to protect your child4 ,its like trying to make a square brick fit snug into a round hole4 ,you would not send that child to a dancing master's reception1 one who is of a good reputation and knows how to conduct one1 or let him come to your house and teach your child the right way1 how to shun all snares4 ,why8 ,because you have not the proper training yourself1 and stand in the way of your child4 ,carefully look over these facts1 which ,i have outlined to you1 and if you are honest with yourself1 you will bear witness with me4 ,i am also prepared to back up this subject with facts of my life4 ,unveiling the ,prince ,,the ,,prince ,,of ,,the ,,world ,,and ,,his ,,power ,in this subject ,i will prove the great mistake we are making as representatives of the race1 which are leading us from the strong arms of ,god1 instead of drawing us to ,him2 we are fools and glory within ourselves4 ,first3 ,i want to introduce the prince of the world1 who rules and governs this whole entire earth1 and all things on it are subject to him1 except a man's soul1 and that will have to stand before the bar of ,god to be judged4 ,this prince is better known as the devil1 who once was an arch-angel in ,heaven1 now he is in war with ,god4 ,he is here disguised as a gentleman2 he also is a noted actor and a deceiver2 he does not wish the world to be destroyed2 he hopes to prove to you that this is as good as the ,heavens above4 ,a public gambler1 or a common drunkard1 or a murderer or any common act1 he dislikes4 ,why8 ,because such action gives away his plans and frightens the children of ,god and brings down their wrath on his works4 ,he would like for you to be happy with the comforts of the world and forget ,god4 ,this prince is an important character2 he is next ruler to ,god2 he is more important than all the angels in ,heaven2 his power is the greatest success of the world1 and the power of man is under his control1 and he is gradually crushing the ,godly thoughts and real christianity out of the hearts and minds of the human family4 ,in order to do great work for ,christ we should study more about his great enemy1 who is the prince of the world4 ,two nations study the conditions of one another in order to conquer or win a battle4 ,this prince is known as a gentleman1 he rules the highest positions on earth4 ,the kings1 and presidents1 judges1 and ministers of the gospel have to take their hats off to him1 and bow low4 ,at such times they deny ,christ as ,peter did2 the prince commands and they are compelled to carry it out to the letter1 they have not faith enough in ,christ to resist1 and if you are saved at all it is only by grace4 ,these are the conditions that face the world today1 real christianity of the human family1 is almost a thing of the past4 ,christianity is today used as a cloak for money grafters4 ,the higher the position is that you hold in the church1 the more money you can get2 these positions are in the power of the prince2 the better preacher you are the more money you can get1 not souls for ,christ4 ,he is out of it4 ,it is not souls and better conditions that our leaders are calling for today1 it is money they want and money they must have4 ,why8 ,because the prince has power over them and nine out of ten have sold out to the prince1 and without a successful remedy it will destroy the world4 ,the negro leaders are selling their churches and their societies to the prince4 ,i have very plainly showed to you the work of the prince1 and have told you of his power4 ,gold and silver money1 the fruits of all evil1 are the valuable things in his kingdom2 that is what he puts up such a terrible fight against the ,god-heads with2 that is what he betrayed ,christ with2 that is what he is buying the ministers and kings1 presidents and judges with1 and the supposed to be christian churches with1 but some of them are a devil's hell1 and the world would be better off without them and their leaders4 ,that is what buys a human life4 ,the lust for money causes our ministers and leaders and the great trust companies to feather their own nest by taking the last penny from a poor starving family without mercy4 ,the prince knows that you want it and would do any crime to get it1 so you rob the poor1 you are branded in ,god's sight as a thief1 and that is against the ,golden ,rule4 ,what does the race need8 ,we want leaders1 men who are manly enough not to throw themselves on a weak race and make them take care of them and their families who are not able to take care of themselves4 ,the greatest progress of the world has been built upon the poor and unfortunate race4 ,they have been drove1 and whipped1 and sold1 and robbed of their rights before a just ,god by man4 ,the negro leaders have taken up the plan of the white man4 ,i will add with a few exceptions1 the height of their manhood and education is to fool the weaker of their race1 and make them take them for their leaders whether they want to or not2 they are not willing to sacrifice one hour for the race unless they can get paid for it1 they study the ,gospel of ,jesus ,christ and sell it for a large sum of money1 when the gospel is free for all4 ,their ambition is to build a fine church and tax a poor race to pay for it4 ,illustration3 ,,professor ,a4 ,w4 ,,cook ,what should they do8 ,they should teach the congregation to save their pennies for a rainy day1 for they have nothing to give2 any man that has not saved from two or five hundred dollars has nothing to give to a world's church4 ,where can we meet in order to worship our ,god and praise to ,him8 ,he tells us wheresoever two or three of ,his children meet there shall be a ,god in their midst and some soul shall be blessed4 ,we first should run the prince out of our homes and dedicate them to ,god1 and make a church there2 when that gets too small1 ,he will find a larger place for us4 ,the strong race that has robbed us1 according to the ,bible1 knows of their crime1 and knows that no thief can enter ,heaven4 ,if we prove ourselves worthy of taking care of what ,god has intended for all men1 their rights1 the white race is willing to give it to us4 ,the christian white people are willing to help us and give us the percentage of our money if we can take care of it and use it ,god-like4 ,god doesn't intend for us to have it until we prove ourselves worthy4 ,in order to prove to the world and ,god that we are obedient people we have got to back only real leaders1 those leaders must be men that will shoulder the musket and be the first men to sacrifice their lives4 ,not a man who is willing to stay behind the ignorant and suffering race of people and feather his own nest off them1 and shout 8see what ,i have done40 ,he must be a man that is brave enough to go before the white people in an intelligent way and demand the support of our people in a manly manner4 ,they know that we have not anything to build churches with1 when we are living in chicken coops and can't buy a square meal three times a week without suffering for it4 ,the white people will give us all the churches we need if we are worthy of them in the community4 ,my friends1 in order to build this race we need more men like ,abraham ,lincoln1 ,fred ,douglas1 ,booker ,t4 ,washington1 ,a4 ,foraker1 ,marcus ,garvey1 and others that have proven themselves manly men1 that will face the world and demand their rights for the negro race in a ,god-like manner4 ,the money is waiting for you if you have got the sense to get it1 and prove to the stronger race that you are manly and honest enough to handle it for your people4 ,you have first got to prove yourself a man1 and not let the prince poison your mind so that you will be low enough to sell your people for your own big name before the world4 ,leaders2 tell your congregations to save their money and buy themselves a little home1 and their pennies for the support of their children and to give them a start in life1 fit them for some kind of business2 you cannot do this work by standing in the pulpit and asking them for every cent they have and telling them to put more in their pockets for the next time1 and giving them that old song1 that 8,god loves a cheerful giver40 ,god does not love any one that throws away the opportunities ,he gave them to get an honest living in the world4 ,if you wish to help someone1 give a penny to that poor baby that has no one to care for it1 or the drunkard that is captured by the prince1 or give a glad hand to the tramp who is friendless in the cold world1 give bread to that unfortunate man or child that is begging for it1 or that outcast mother1 and a kind word to the unfortunate gambler2 take them to your home and try to reason with them in ,god's name4 ,those are the kind of gifts that ,god loves2 give your time1 your love1 your pride1 your bread and a good word to those that need it every day1 not on ,sundays only at a fine church1 for in this world our churches are the headquarters for the prince of the world2 he is two-thirds owner of them4 ,every negro church should have a charitable institution attached to it to take care of their poor and aged mothers and fathers1 and poor motherless children1 that are begging you for help on the streets4 ,then as men and women we could have the courage to ask our white friends to help us1 and they would give you their hearty support1 and be glad to do so4 ,and then we would be doing what ,god wants us to do4 ,we could have money without begging our old mother and father for it4 ,if we would be manly men and women1 help those that need it4 ,the ,bible says1 8thou shall not walk in the path of the ungodly10 and our leaders teach us the same and tell us we must stay out of barrooms and the gambling houses1 and the houses of immorality4 ,but my friends that is a mistake1 those are the places we should go in1 in the ,lord's name4 ,i understand the meaning as1 you should not crave for those evil things2 when you do1 then you are walking in the path of the ungodly4 ,if your heart desires to murder someone1 then you are a murderer2 in ,god's sight the crime is committed4 ,if your religion cannot last long enough to go into those dens and speak to your brother or sister and try to bring them out1 then you haven't faith and you glory in yourself1 and you will have to answer before the bar of ,judgment1 and with such pride of the world your whole church will be lost1 for you are too proud to stoop to falling humanity and help them1 for that is what you must do4 ,an appeal to the young educated and manly leaders3 in your financial affairs be a manly man1 a real man1 don't accept a nickel or a dime from your old mothers and fathers who have toiled for years and put you on the platform you are now on4 ,an old mother at fifty or sixty1 it is a disgrace for any church to accept money from her1 when they have to toil hard every day for bread4 ,young leaders you should take care of them1 instead of taking from them1 then you are showing the spirit of a hero1 and a manly man1 don't let the prince buy the manly part of you1 so that you cannot excuse your old mothers and fathers4 ,money you want1 but you should not accept it unless it is honorable4 ,the facts and conditions that are in actual existence among our people1 there should be some remedy for them1 someone has got to open the eyes of the race1 they cannot be honestly contradicted1 they are not of myself1 ,i am commanded to right them from a pure and honest heart1 ,i am willing to devote my time and money in every way for the upbuilding of humanity4 ,my greatest knowledge of this subject is from the ,bible4 ,if you study ,god's word instead of just reading it over1 you will understand it better4 ,then try to live accordingly4 ,the prince of the world studies his word and uses it to condemn you before ,god4 ,he puts another meaning to it and tries to make you believe he is right1 so it is best to know for yourself4 ,if you study in faith ,he will give you understanding4 ,i trust that you will read carefully and weigh every sentence1 and place the right meaning to them3 there are exceptions in all cases1 some are not guilty1 but slow in action4 ,my ,first ,sermon to the ,world ,when ,i was called to the works of ,god1 my first sermon was preached on the ball room floor at one of my cake walks1 the last big one that ,i rendered to the public4 ,when ,i marched out with the cake walkers1 instead of introducing them to the people1 which were about four hundred in number1 my heart was so full of joy that ,i forgot all about them and began to speak4 ,these are my remarks3 ,ladies and gentlemen1 we as ,god's people have assembled here tonight to give ,god praise1 for ourselves and the happy times he has given us4 ,the great pleasures come from ,god1 let us go to the churches and thank him4 ,in our sorrows and troubles he gives us happiness4 ,let us men do no smoking in the hall where the ladies are1 let us show the light of godly respect for all people4 ,i hope to meet all of you at the church on ,sunday next4 ,then someone touched me on my shoulder and asked about the cake walk4 ,i started the cake walk and all had an enjoyable evening4 ,my troubles began that night1 because ,i fooled the devil1 and have been ever since1 and this book is putting another one over on him4 ,this is a true saying4 ,you can fool all of the people some of the time1 and some of the people all of the time1 but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time4 ,ecclesiastes #ab2 #ac3ad4 ,let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter1 fear ,god and keep his commandments1 for this is the whole duty of man4 ,for ,god will bring every work into judgment with every secret thing whether it be good or whether it be evil4 ,prophet ,jude #bd2 #be4 ,now unto him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy4 ,to the only wise ,god1 our saviour1 be glory and majesty dominion and power1 both now and forever4 ,amen4 ,i remain
