,a ,true ,interpretation of the ,witch of ,endor ,a ,,true ,,interpretation ,,of ,,the ,,witch ,,of ,,endor1 ,spoken of in #a ,sam4 ,,xxviii4 begin4 at the #aath ,verse4 ,,shewing1 #a4 ,how ,she and all other ,witches do beget or produce that ,familiar ,spirit they deal with1 and what a ,familiar ,spirit is1 and how those ,voices are procured1 and ,shapes appear unto them1 whereby the ,ignorant and ,unbelieving ,people are deceived by them4 #b4 ,it is clearly made appear in this ,,treatise1 that no ,spirit can be raised without its ,body1 neither can any ,spirit assume any ,body after ,death2 ,for if the ,spirit doth walk1 the ,body must walk also4 #c4 ,an ,interpretation of all those ,scriptures1 that doth seem as if ,spirits might go out of ,men's ,bodies when they die1 and subsist in some ,place or other without ,bodies4 ,lastly1 ,several other ,things needful for the ,mind of ,man to know2 which whoever doth understand1 it will be great ,satisfaction4 ,by ,,lodowicke ,,muggleton1 ,penman hereof1 and the last chosen ,witness unto that ,ever-,blessed ,body of ,christ ,jesus ,glorified1 to be the only ,wise1 very ,true ,god alone1 ,everlasting ,father1 and ,creator of both ,worlds1 and all that were made in them4 ,the ,second ,edition4 ,,london1 ,printed by ,,subscription in the ,,year #agbd4 ,,to ,,the ,,reader4 ,i ,have been desired by several ,friends1 to set forth the ,interpretation concerning the ,witch of ,endor and ,king ,saul2 how it may be understood how she raised ,samuel1 and how ,familiar ,spirits came to be procured1 and with what ,power they do such strange ,things4 ,many ,enemies also have objected this ,place1 to prove that ,spirits may be raised without ,bodies1 and that ,spirits may walk1 or be happy or miserable without ,bodies3 ,though ,i have given an ,answer in ,discourse to these ,doubts and ,questions1 but few can retain in their ,memory what is spoken in ,discourse2 therefore ,i thought it convenient and necessary to set it forth in ,print1 for the ,information and ,satisfaction of many ,friends who desire it1 and for the ,convincement of all ,gain-sayers4 ,and let them seriously read it over without ,prejudice1 and they may see this ,point clearly opened1 which hath laid hid this many ,hundred ,years1 with other ,places of ,scriptures opened1 which many have objected against this ,interpretation1 and all those ,places of ,scripture that is commonly brought1 or doth most seem to hold forth1 that ,spirits may be without ,bodies1 are likewise opened and expounded in short in this ,treatise1 as followeth4 ,,chap4 ,i4 #a ,,sam4 ,,xxviii4 from the #aath to the #ahth ,verse4 ,i ,shall give the ,interpretation1 what is meant by that ,familiar ,spirit the ,witch of ,endor which did raise ,samuel1 so much spoken of in the ,book of ,samuel1 and other ,places of ,scripture2 and so much objected by many to prove that ,spirits may be raised without ,bodies1 and may appear unto ,people in what ,shape they please4 ,the ,belief of this lying ,principle1 it did proceed out of the ,imagination of ,reason1 the ,devil----,the ,imagination that doth arise or proceed from the ,seed of ,reason in ,man1 is that ,familiar ,spirit that ,witches deal with1 and that ,familiar ,spirit it proceedeth from no ,spirit or ,devil without a ,man1 but from the ,seed of ,reason within ,man2 for look what evil ,thoughts doth arise out of the ,heart of ,man1 it proceedeth out of the ,seed of ,reason in ,man1 and not from any thing without ,man2 for the ,imagination of the ,heart1 it is plac'd in the ,seed of ,reason1 therefore it is said in ,scripture1 ,that the ,imaginations of ,man's ,heart was evil1 and that every ,imagination of the ,thoughts of his ,heart was only evil continually1 as in ,gen4 vi4 #e4 ,so that there is no other ,devil1 or ,spirit1 or ,familiar ,spirit for ,witches to deal withal1 or to work any ,enchantments by1 but their own ,imagination2 there the ,familiar ,spirit is produced from whence it came1 and there it ceases to be when they are put to ,death1 or over-power'd by the ,knowledge1 and the ,power of ,faith in other ,men1 then the ,familiar ,spirit centers in the ,imagination again1 it being over-powered by the ,power of ,faith2 so likewise1 the good ,thoughts that doth proceed out of the ,heart of ,man1 they do arise or proceed from the ,seed of ,faith1 concerning the true ,god1 or any heavenly ,secret1 or temporal ,judgments1 or temporal ,blessings2 if the ,foreknowledge of these ,things doth arise1 or be foretold by the ,revelation of the ,seed of ,faith1 they are and may be called the ,spirit of ,god4 ,because they were foretold and declared by the ,revelation of the ,seed of ,faith1 which ,seed of ,faith is the ,seed of ,god1 it being of ,god's own ,nature1 therefore called the ,spirit of ,god1 and so foretold and declared by the ,spirit of ,god3 ,so likewise1 what ,foreknowledge or ,declaration of ,things1 that are above that which is common to the ,seed of ,reason1 7as raising of ,spirits and such like27 ,i say1 they do proceed from the ,imagination of ,reason1 the ,devil2 and this strong ,imagination from the ,seed of ,reason1 is that ,familiar ,spirit by which ,witches do divine or foretel ,things4 ,so that the strong ,imagination of ,reason1 being exercised about ,things that are beyond ,trades and ,sciences1 that are necessary1 needful1 and lawful2 so it becomes a ,familiar ,spirit1 because it proceeds from the imagination of ,reason1 and the ,seed of ,reason being the ,devil1 and the ,devil being the fallen ,angel2 for the ,devil is ,man and ,woman2 and the ,seed of ,reason is their ,seed4 ,and that ,seed of ,reason it came from1 that ,serpent that beguiled ,eve2 and that ,serpent was an ,angel1 and his ,seed was ,reason1 and this ,reason in ,man is the ,devil2 and the ,imagination of ,reason is the ,father of that ,familiar ,spirit1 by which a ,man or ,woman doth ,divine1 ,soothsay1 raise ,shapes1 or hear ,voices1 or any such ,thing of that ,nature1 they all proceed from the ,imagination of ,reason in ,man1 and the original ,being of this ,seed of ,reason4 ,it came from that ,serpent-,angel1 that was cast down from ,heaven unto this ,earth1 who deceived our first ,parents1 as ,i have abundantly shewed in ,rev4 xi4 and in the ,interpretation of the whole ,book of the ,revelation4 ,now ,i have laid a ,foundation for the ,reader1 that he may the better understand the ,foundation1 from whence these ,familiar ,spirits that ,witches have1 do proceed1 and how they are procured1 and what ,power they have over the ignorant ,mind of ,man2 therefore to satisfy the ,thoughts of many1 who hath desired and requested of me1 that ,i would interpret some chief ,sayings in the ,scriptures1 that speaketh of ,witchcraft1 and ,familiar ,spirits1 and such like2 which ,sayings are very strange and hard to be understood2 so that most ,people are very much unsatisfied in these ,things1 though clear in their ,judgments1 in many other ,things that are of more ,concernment4 ,and as ,i have given the ,interpretation of the whole ,book of the ,revelation1 with many other ,places of ,scripture1 to the great ,comfort and ,satisfaction of many1 so ,i shall add the ,interpretation of this thing also4 ,the first ,place of ,scripture ,i shall insist upon1 is that in #a ,sam4 xxviii4 beginning at the #aath ,verse1 concerning the ,witch of ,endor2 this is commonly the ,place that most ,people fetch to prove1 that ,spirits may be raised in what ,shape the ,witch please by their ,familiar ,spirits2 therefore let the ,reader mind the ,discourse that followeth4 ,the ,words are these1 ,then said the ,woman1 ,whom shall ,i bring up unto thee8 ,and he said1 bring me up ,samuel4 ,and in the #abth ,verse1 ,and when the ,woman saw ,samuel1 she cried with aloud ,voice1 and the ,woman spake to ,saul1 saying1 why hast thou deceived me1 for thou art ,saul8 ,and in the #acth ,verse1 ,and the ,king said unto her1 be not afraid1 for what sawest thou8 ,and the ,woman said unto ,saul1 ,i saw ,gods ascending out of the ,earth4 ,the #adth ,verse1 ,and he said unto her1 what ,form is he of8 ,and she said1 an old ,man cometh up1 and he is covered with a ,mantle4 ,and ,saul perceived it was ,samuel1 and he stooped with his ,face to the ,ground1 and bowed himself4 ,the #aeth ,verse1 ,and ,samuel said to ,saul1 ,why hast thou disquieted me to bring me up8 ,and ,saul answered1 ,i am sore distressed3 ,for the ,philistines make ,war against me1 and ,god is departed from me1 and answereth me no more1 neither by ,prophet1 nor by ,dreams3 ,therefore ,i have called thee1 that thou mayst make known unto me what ,i shall do4 ,verse #af4 ,then said ,samuel1 ,wherefore then dost thou ask of me1 seeing the ,lord is departed from thee1 and is become thine ,enemy8 ,verse #ag4 ,and the ,lord hath done to him1 as he spake by me2 for the ,lord hath rent the ,kingdom out of thine ,hand1 and given it to thy ,neighbour1 even to ,david4 ,verse #ah4 ,because thou obeyest not the ,voice of the ,lord1 nor executed his fierce ,wrath upon ,amalek2 therefore hath the ,lord done this ,thing unto thee this ,day4 ,,chap4 ,,ii4 ,this ,familiar ,spirit the ,witch of ,endor and other ,witches have1 whereby they do such ,things1 it is the ,imagination of ,reason1 the ,devil in themselves2 that is1 they set themselves apart with the ,thoughts of the ,imaginations of their ,hearts1 to dive into the diabolical ,power2 that is1 that they might know the ,depths of ,satan1 their ,imagination conceiving that the ,devil is a ,spirit flying in the ,air1 and that this ,spirit can assume or take up any ,shape it please4 ,so that the ,imagination of the ,heart hath produced an evil ,spirit in it self1 so that this ,familiar ,spirit is begotten out of the ,womb of ,reason3 ,for the ,seed of ,reason in ,man is the ,womb or the ,mother1 and the ,imagination of the ,heart is the ,father that begets this ,familiar ,spirit1 and this ,familiar ,spirit is the ,son of ,imagination4 ,so that all ,thoughts of the ,heart1 and that wonderful ,knowledge declared by them1 it is revealed through this ,son the ,familiar ,spirit1 begotten in themselves by the ,seed of ,reason the ,mother1 and ,imagination the ,father4 ,so that there is no ,devil1 nor ,familiar ,spirit without them1 as ,people do vainly imagine1 but the ,devil and ,familiar ,spirit is always within them1 and no where else2 yet all ,people fear a ,devil without them1 but he is no where to be found but in ,man and ,woman1 this ,i do certainly know to be true4 ,again1 ,these ,witches doth suppose the true ,god to be an ,infinite ,spirit1 without any ,body or ,substance1 as all ,people almost do2 and that the ,devil is a ,spirit that can assume ,bodies or what ,shape he pleaseth1 or what ,shape or ,form the ,witch shall call for4 ,this is the ,opinion of most ,people in the ,world as well as ,witches1 yea1 even of the most of the greatest learned ,men2 ,darkness hath overspread the ,minds of all learned ,men in the ,world1 so that they cannot find out what the true ,god is1 nor where he is2 nor what the right ,devil is1 nor where he is2 yea ,man1 himself is he that cannot find out himself3 ,but no more of this now4 ,to the ,matter in hand1 the ,witches they do not know any ,divine ,being1 or ,power1 or ,form of ,god1 but what their ,imagination doth conceive to be ,god1 for they have full ,faith in this ,knowledge of theirs1 to be the true ,knowledge of ,god2 only the ,laws of ,men they fear1 but no other ,god1 but that ,familiar ,spirit which they have produced in themselves1 by giving themselves either to ,fasting and ,prayer1 unto an unknown ,divine ,being or ,power2 supposing this ,power to be a ,spirit that can appear in any ,shape they shall call for or desire4 ,and all ,people being ignorant of the true ,god1 and the right ,devil1 as they themselves are1 so that the ,people have a ,faith in these ,witches1 being ignorant as aforesaid4 ,what the true ,god and right ,devil is1 and the ,witches ,faith1 and their ,faith being joyn'd together1 it becometh strong to atchieve such ,apparitions as their ,faith hath chose to be the ,object of their ,imagination3 ,for he that enquireth of a ,witch1 his ,faith and the ,witch's ,faith is all one4 ,also this is to be minded1 that all ,witches have some ,rule by which they do perceive those ,apparitions1 and hear those ,voices2 for their is no wicked ,knowledge or wicked ,wisdom as the ,wisdom of the ,world1 neither is there any good ,knowledge or good ,wisdom as the ,wisdom of ,god4 ,i say1 there is no ,knowledge or ,wisdom good or bad1 but those that have it they must go by some ,rule1 else it is meer ,nonsense2 as most of your ,quakers ,matters or ,principles are meer ,nonsense1 that hath neither ,bottom nor ,top4 ,,chap4 ,,iii4 ,but to the ,matter in hand1 we see the natural ,astrologers they go by a ,rule1 and their ,wisdom and ,knowledge in ,things of ,nature1 it is declared by them from and by a ,rule1 else that they say would be meer ,nonsense and ,foolishness4 ,yet ,i say1 your natural ,astrologers they are ,witches1 and have their ,figure to judge the ,effects of the ,stars2 but this ,witchcraft is allowed by the ,powers of the ,nations4 ,so ,i say1 these ,witches that doth do ,things by a ,familiar ,spirit1 they have a ,rule to walk by as the other hath2 for as the ,imagination of the other hath by the ,study of the ,figure1 attained to give some ,judgment upon the ,effects of the ,stars1 upon a particular ,person or ,nation4 ,so likewise those ,witches that hath a ,familiar ,spirit1 they have attained to this ,familiar ,spirit out of their ,imagination of ,reason1 as ,i said before4 ,and this ,familiar ,spirit being begotten in themselves by the ,strength of ,imagination their ,father2 now understand thus much1 that this diabolical ,wisdom that is begotten in ,man and ,woman by the ,imagination of ,reason1 the ,devil is that ,familiar ,spirit that ,men and ,women do act by4 ,and after this ,familiar ,spirit is begotten in ,man or ,woman by ,imagination their father1 as ,i said before1 then this ,familiar ,spirit of the ,witch will motion in the ,mind too fast1 and pray unto the ,host of ,heaven1 the ,sun1 ,moon and ,planets1 supposing that the good ,spirit in some of them1 and imagining the evil ,spirit or ,devil to be in other some of them4 ,now observe1 when this ,familiar ,spirit is produced in them1 then they observe every ,motion of the ,mind1 and their ,faith being in every ,motion of their ,minds1 it produceth either some farther ,knowledge in their own ,apprehension1 or else some ,visions are presented to their ,phantasies2 for they have dedicated some certain ,words to be said in their ,minds motional1 to be used when they would do any ,feats1 besides their ,fasting and ,prayer4 ,and this ,thing they have dedicated to enquire of1 is that which they divine with1 or tell any ,thing from it1 is much like unto the ,astrologers1 their ,figure is dedicated for that ,purpose1 that he may tell ,things from1 and without the ,knowledge of the ,figure4 ,he can tell nothing except he were skilled in it before1 but the ,figure was the ,thing he came to know more than others at the first2 for wonderful ,things may be accomplished through the ,imagination of ,reason1 when it hath set it self apart on purpose to attain unto such ,things4 ,for ,i find by ,experience within this seventeen ,years1 what strange ,things hath been atchieved by ,man and ,woman1 who hath given themselves up to an unknown ,god upon a ,religious ,account4 ,some hath by their ,fasting and ,prayer unto an unknown ,god1 attained unto ,visions1 ,apparitions1 ,appearance of ,angels1 ,voices1 and many other strange ,things2 yet altogether ignorant of the true ,god and the right ,devil1 and what ,angels are2 so that these ,things hath been all within them1 and they thought that ,god had revealed these ,things unto them2 when as they did attain unto these ,things aforesaid by their own ,endeavours2 as many ,quakers and others can ,witness at this ,day1 if they would1 by hearkening to the ,light within them1 and ,fasting1 and such like4 ,neither did ,god present any ,vision1 or speak any ,voice unto them1 but they do produce those ,things aforesaid by their own ,imaginations4 ,so is it with ,witches1 they do raise ,shapes and ,voices out of themselves1 and those ,voices they hear1 they are no other but motional ,voices in themselves2 and the ignorant ,people that believes them is ,partakers of those motional ,voices also with the ,witch4 ,for their is no ,spirit of the ,devil without them1 that doth assume any ,shape1 or speak any ,voice unto the ,witch1 neither doth any ,spirit without the ,witch reveal any ,knowledge unto them2 it is all produced by their own wicked ,imagination1 who hath begotten within themselves that ,familiar ,spirit they deal with1 and not from any ,devil or ,spirit without them4 ,but all cometh from the ,imagination within1 that is1 the ,devil and no other2 yet this ,familiar ,spirit is produced from within them1 to see ,shapes1 and hear motional ,voices1 meerly by watching the ,motion of the ,imagination that is placed in their ,minds or ,hearts1 even as the ,quakers do by hearkening to the ,light within them1 they do procure many strange ,visions and motional ,voices1 but they being ,groundless and ,nonsensical they come to nothing4 ,,chap4 ,,iv4 ,let the ,reader observe when ,king ,saul asked the ,witch of ,endor1 ,what ,form the ,gods was of1 she had seen ascend out of the ,earth2 ,the ,woman answered and said1 ,an old ,man with a ,mantle1 c4 ,but ,saul saw nothing but as the ,woman told him1 and ,saul believed her ,words1 and bowed himself to the ,ground4----,now mind the #aeth ,verse1 ,samuel said to ,saul1 why hast thou disquieted me to bring me up2 the ,meaning is this1 now the ,witch had full ,power over ,saul1 so that he did really believe the ,witch1 that she had indeed raised up ,samuel1 though he saw nothing----yet the ,fear of being destroyed by the ,philistines1 and the ,belief of the ,woman's ,words1 ,samuel began to speak in ,saul's ,conscience2 there came into ,saul's ,mind the ,words which ,samuel had told him in his ,life-time4----,so that these was no speaking to ,saul by ,samuel1 but the ,reasonings of ,saul's own ,heart2 and these ,voices that ,samuel spake to ,saul1 they were motional ,voices that did arise in ,saul's own ,heart4----,for an accusing ,conscience will speak dreadful ,voices in the ,conscience2 as the ,blood of ,abel cried for ,vengeance in ,cain's ,conscience1 and the ,saints that were slain under the ,altar2 cried for ,vengeance upon those that shed their ,blood2 so that a sinful ,conscience will have ,voices enough to torment him1 though ,god himself1 nor ,prophet without him1 doth never speak unto him4 ,a guilty ,conscience will speak with a motional ,voice their great ,terror and ,torment1 which is greater than can be born1 as it was with ,cain1 ,saul1 and ,judas4 ,yea1 it was ,fear1 and the ,remembrance of ,saul's ,disobedience to ,samuel's ,words in his ,life-time1 this did arise afresh in ,saul's ,mind1 and spake with motional ,voices in ,saul's ,conscience1 accusing him for his ,disobedience to ,samuel's ,words4 ,for the ,remembrance of ,samuel's ,words1 may be said to disquiet ,samuel2 for ,samuel's ,words were buried in ,saul's ,conscience4 ,but now1 by his going to enquire of a ,witch1 ,samuel is revived again in ,saul's ,mind1 and there ,samuel speaks ,fear1 ,wrath1 and ,terror2 for ,samuel's ,words spake in ,saul's ,conscience one motional ,voice1 and the ,guilt of ,saul's ,disobedience spake ,fear and ,horror in ,saul's ,conscience1 this was a motional ,voice in ,saul's ,conscience also2 for the ,voice of ,truth will speak1 or the ,voice of ,obedience1 and the ,voice of ,sin and ,disobedience will speak in ,man's ,conscience1 as if they were two distinct ,spirits4 ,this many guilty ,consciences can witness1 as we may read by ,cain that killed his ,brother1 and ,judas that betrayed his ,lord1 and many others who hath been guilty of the like ,crimes4 ,so that the ,witch did raise no ,samuel1 nor ,spirit1 but a meer ,shadow it was the ,witch saw1 which she could raise by her ,art2 neither was there any ,samuel or ,spirit not at all that did speak to ,saul1 but that motional ,voice in ,saul's ,conscience as aforesaid4 ,and in this ,sense ,samuel may be said to be disquieted2 for if ,saul had never gone to the ,witch to enquire of her1 ,samuel's ,words had been quiet in ,saul2 neither would ,saul have had such ,reasonings in himself1 nor have been so sensible of the ,worm of his ,conscience4 ,so that there was no ,voice of ,samuel spoke unto ,saul1 but a motional ,voice in ,saul's own ,mind or ,conscience2 his ,fear and his ,disobedience1 and what ,samuel had told him before1 these all speaking with ,voices in his wounded ,conscience4 ,samuel's ,words spake one ,voice1 and his own ,disobedience spake another2 so that the ,witch of ,endor did neither raise ,samuel1 but only made the ,king believe she did1 neither did ,samuel speak to the ,king but as aforesaid4 ,for the ,kingdom being rent out of his ,hands1 his ,sons being destroyed1 and all other ,threatnings of ,samuel1 they came into ,saul's ,mind afresh with strong ,motions1 so that they became as ,voices in ,saul's ,heart1 as if ,samuel had spake to the hearing of the ,ear3 ,for there was no ,samuel raised1 nor no ,samuel spake1 but what was motional in the ,mind of ,saul1 and what did visionally appear unto the ,witch1 which was a meer ,shadow which she could produce by her ,witchcraft-,art1 to all those that were more ignorant than her self1 or had ,faith in her ,power4 ,,chap4 ,v4 ,for the ,reader must mind1 that ,witches and all those that doth attain to the ,visions1 and hear ,voices within them1 they do use ,means to attain unto it2 also they have some standing ,rule or ,art1 by which they come to enquire or to know ,things1 that are above that ,knowledge which is common to other ,people1 it is much like unto the ,ways of ,god4 ,therefore let the ,reader mind the ,ground work laid down at the first1 that the ,imagination of ,reason had begotten a ,son out of the ,womb of the ,seed of ,reason in ,man1 which ,i call the ,mother1 and ,imagination the ,father1 and the ,son that is begotten in the ,womb of ,reason2 by ,imagination the ,father is that great ,wisdom1 ,knowledge and ,power1 by which they go beyond other ,people who are of a lower ,capacity4 ,this ,son is that ,familiar ,spirit ,witches doth deal with2 it is another ,spirit begotten in them1 which was not in their ,birth1 when they were born1 but begotten in themselves since by ,imagination as aforesaid2 ,neither is this ,familiar ,spirit produced1 or doth come from any ,thing1 or any ,devil without them1 as ,people do vainly imagine2 but the ,familiar ,spirit it is produced1 and doth come from within1 for out of the ,heart cometh evil ,thoughts1 ,murder1 ,adultery1 c4 ,and all ,familiar ,spirits1 they are all conceived in the ,heart1 and being conceived there1 in its ,season it bringeth forth such ,spirits as are conceived in the ,heart2 if ,envy and ,murder be conceived1 as it was in ,cain1 then it bringeth forth the ,spirit or ,deed of ,murder2 if ,lust be conceived in the ,heart1 it bringeth forth the ,spirit and ,act of ,adultery1 as it did in ,david2 and if a ,familiar ,spirit be conceived in the ,heart1 then it bringeth forth such a ,spirit that shall speak motional ,voices within them1 as if some ,spirits without them did appear without a ,body1 and speak to them1 and reveal those ,things unto them4 ,many wicked ,spirits more then is mentioned1 are conceived in the ,hearts of ,men and ,women1 and acted by them1 ,spirits1 ,i say1 that were never of ,god's ,creation1 but hath been conceived in the ,mind of ,man since2 for when ,sin is conceived1 as in ,james i4 #ae4 ,when ,lust hath conceived1 it bringeth forth ,sin2 and ,sin when it is finished1 bringeth forth ,death3 so that there is a ,conception of ,sin first in the ,heart2 and if it doth not die before it quickens into ,life1 that is1 into act2 then it bringeth forth ,death1 which is the ,punishment due to such ,sins1 that are alive in ,man's ,actions1 after they were conceived in the ,heart4 ,and as the ,evil of ,murder1 ,adultery1 and ,theft is conceived first in the ,heart1 so is that ,familiar ,spirit ,witches and ,wizards have2 they are first conceived in the ,mind1 and in a little ,season it groweth alive in them1 and speaketh unto them1 as if it were without them3 ,for this ,i say1 that a ,familiar ,spirit is conceived and begotten in the ,heart of ,man and ,woman1 as the other ,sins aforementioned are1 and the ,cause why ,god is more angry with those that deal with a ,familiar ,spirit1 and hath commanded them to be put to ,death1 more than for other ,sins conceived in the ,mind is1 because they imitate the ,way of ,god4 ,or the ,spirit of ,prophecy1 which causeth the ,people to believe in a meer ,fiction or ,shadow without any ,substance1 that a ,spirit may be raised out of the ,ground without a ,body1 and so they forsake the living ,god1 who hath a ,body of his own1 and gave ,life to every ,creature1 that hath a ,body and doth believe a ,lie1 which hath been conceived in the ,mind1 and hath quickned into a ,familiar ,spirit1 and this ,spirit doth always live within the ,witch1 and not without her2 and this ,familiar ,spirit thus conceived1 first in the evil ,mind1 and afterward quickning in the evil ,heart1 it goeth from ,strength to ,strength1 and from one ,degree of ,knowledge1 to a farther ,degree of evil ,knowledge1 and evil ,wisdom1 as all ,things else doth that hath ,life2 for ,sin hath ,life in it1 and the outward ,law causeth ,sin to revive in every one that doth evil1 as ,st4 ,paul saith1 ,rom4 vii4 #i4 ,thus in some ,measure the ,reader may understand what a ,familiar ,spirit is1 and how it comes to have a ,being in ,witches and ,wizards1 and how the ignorant are ,partakers with the ,familiar ,spirit4 ,in the next ,place1 ,i shall shew how those that have a ,familiar ,spirit do imitate the way of ,god1 or the way of true ,prophets2 observe the ,way and ,manner of true ,prophets1 ,high-,priests1 and all other ,people1 who are richly gifted with the ,spirit of ,prophecy1 or ,revelation2 for the ,seed of ,faith planted in the ,heart1 is the ,seed and ,nature of ,god1 as ,reason is the ,seed and ,nature of the ,serpent or ,devil2 and as the ,seed of ,reason is the ,womb or ,mother for ,imagination to get a ,son4 ,so likewise the ,seed of ,faith in ,man1 is the ,womb or ,mother for the ,revelation of ,faith1 to beget a ,son out of the ,seed of ,faith1 answerable as the ,imagination doth out of the ,seed of ,reason4 ,and this ,son the ,revelation hath begotten out of the ,seed of ,faith1 is that heavenly ,wisdom1 discerning ,knowledge and ,power over the ,spirits of others1 and ,knowledge of ,things above the ,stars1 and knoweth the true ,god in ,form and ,nature1 with many other heavenly ,secrets1 which none else can know but those that believe them4 ,so that the ,revelation of ,faith hath begotten this heavenly ,wisdom1 ,power and ,glory out of the ,seed of ,faith1 which is the ,seed of ,god1 even of his ,divine ,nature2 and this ,wisdom1 ,power1 and ,glory1 is that ,son or ,spirit1 by which all ,prophets1 ,high ,priests1 ,apostles and others that have it4 ,i say this is that by which they can truly divine by1 in that they can foretel truly what shall come to pass1 according to the ,knowledge of the ,revelation of ,faith2 and this ,wisdom1 and ,knowledge being produced by ,revelation out of the ,womb of the ,seed of ,faith1 it may and is called the ,spirit of ,god in ,man1 that doth teach and shew the ,wisdom of ,god to others1 so that others cometh to be taught and subjected by it1 to their great ,peace here1 and eternal ,joy hereafter4 ,,chap4 ,,vi4 ,and this ,spirit of ,wisdom1 ,knowledge and ,power1 which is produced by the ,revelation as aforesaid1 it hath motional ,voices in the ,conscience1 as the ,familiar ,spirit hath in the evil ,conscience2 but the motional ,voices in a good ,conscience speaketh ,peace4 ,likewise this motional ,voice in ,prophets1 ,high-,priests1 ,apostles1 and others1 is that by which they do foretel ,things by1 whether it be good or bad1 that shall befal those that shall enquire4 ,also the ,spirit of ,revelation hath a standing ,rule to enquire by1 as those have that doth tell ,things by a ,familiar ,spirit1 as ,i said before2 for the ,witches doth imitate the way of the ,prophets1 and the ,devil's ,way is as like ,god's ,way as he can4 ,now let the ,reader mind1 and he may see how ,men have enquired of the ,lord by motional ,voices in the ,mind1 by that ,spirit of ,faith which is gotten by ,revelation1 which is called the ,spirit of ,god4 ,in the ,time of the ,law of ,moses1 the ,ephod was a standing ,rule1 for to enquire of ,god for good or bad ,success4 ,now there was no ,man could tell what the ,event would be that looked upon the ,ephod1 but such ,men as had the ,spirit of ,revelation and ,prophecy in them2 as ,david and the ,high ,priest1 as soon as ever they looked upon the ,ephod1 they could tell whether they should prosper in ,battle or not2 but if any other ,man which had not the ,spirit of ,revelation and ,prophecy should look upon the ,ephod1 they could tell nothing by it4 ,though the ,ephod was appointed of ,god1 on purpose to enquire of ,god1 yet none could find out ,god's ,mind1 but such ,men aforesaid2 for as soon as ever ,david or the ,high-,priest looked upon the ,ephod1 they could tell what the ,event would be1 as may be seen1 #a ,sam4 xxiii4 #f1 #i4 how ,david called for the ,ephod and ,abiathar the ,priest to bring it to enquire of the ,lord4 ,yet ,god never spake to them by ,voice1 yet they had motional ,voices in themselves in their ,hearts1 assuring them that they prosper or not prosper2 yet ,god never appeared himself1 nor any ,angel1 neither did ,god speak by any ,voice1 yet they are bid to go and prosper1 as if they had heard some ,voice by looking upon the ,ephod1 so that those ,voices that bid them go and prosper1 they were motional ,voices that did arise from the ,revelation and ,spirit of ,prophecy within them by that ,skill they had in the ,ephod1 which was appointed of ,god for that ,purpose4 ,so that all ,david's ,voices1 and the ,high-,priest ,voices1 that were motional ,voices1 yet called the ,voice of ,god1 because they did arise from the ,seed of ,faith in ,david and others1 which is the ,divine ,nature of ,god1 therefore called the ,spirit of ,god4 ,for this ,i say1 if ,saul had not lost that ,spirit of ,prophecy by his ,disobedience1 as he once had1 when the good ,spirit departed from him1 he might have enquired of the ,ephod1 and have been answered with a motional ,voice by the ,ephod1 as he was by enquiring of a ,witch4 ,for the ,spirit of ,samuel did speak no more to ,saul1 then the ,spirit of ,god did speak to ,david1 they were both motional ,voices that did arise from their two ,seeds the one ,voice spake ,peace and ,deliverance1 and the other spake ,wrath and ,destruction2 the one did enquire in the ,way that ,god did appoint1 even of the ,ephod1 or of the ,lord's ,prophets2 the other did enquire of that which was forbidden1 and forsook the ,lord and his ,prophets1 and went to a ,witch to enquire3 ,it was because one was the ,seed of ,adam1 which is the ,seed of ,god1 and so chosen of ,god in ,mercy1 even ,david2 and the other was the ,seed of the ,serpent1 even the ,devil1 who was chosen ,king in ,god's ,wrath even ,saul4 ,this is the true ,interpretation of those ,voices that ,samuel spake to ,saul1 and of his being raised by the ,witch of ,endor4 ,therefore you that can understand these things as aforementioned1 you may see how the whole ,world lieth in ,darkness1 and are cheated of their ,sense and ,reason by this lying and vain ,imagination1 to believe that ,spirits can be without ,bodies1 or that ,spirits can be raised without ,bodies1 or that ,spirits can speak without ,bodies1 or that ,spirits departed can assume any ,shapes afterwards2 these ,things and many more are produced by the dark ,imagination of the ,heart of ,man3 ,and if the ,reader hath any true ,light of ,faith in him1 he may understand the ,interpretation ,i have given of the ,witch of ,endor1 and how a ,familiar ,spirit is produced or begotten in them1 and be satisfied in his ,mind as to that ,matter2 so much concerning those ,words in ,samuel aforementioned4 ,,chap4 ,,vii4 ,again1 it is said1 ,isa4 viii4 #bi4 the ,prophet speaking there to unbelieving ,israelites that did not believe the ,word of the ,lord through the ,prophets ,mouths1 concerning the ,destruction that should come upon ,israel2 this ,judgment did the ,lord threaten by the ,mouth of his ,prophet ,isaiah to bring upon ,israel for their ,unbelief2 and this ,prophet seeing the ,people would not hearken unto the ,voice of the ,lord's ,prophets1 nor inquire of them1 but altogether persecuted them as false ,prophets1 ,deceivers and ,liers1 and the ,inclination of their ,hearts was more willing and desirous to enquire of a ,witch or ,wizard1 who had a ,familiar ,spirit then of the ,prophet of the ,lord1 as you may see ,chapter and ,verse above-written2 the ,words are these as followeth4 ,and when they shall say unto you1 seek unto them that have ,familiar ,spirits1 and unto ,wizards that peep and that mutter1 should not a ,people seek unto their ,god for the living to the dead4 ,the ,meaning of these ,words is this1 that unbelieving ,men do think and believe that ,witches and ,wizards who hath a ,familiar ,spirit1 can rise out of the ,ground where dead ,men were buried1 living ,spirits without ,bodies that can reveal ,things unto them1 by that motional ,voice that doth proceed from these ,familiar ,spirits1 which doth peep and mutter4 ,that is1 the ,whisperings that proceeds from this ,familiar ,spirit1 that is begotten by the ,imagination of ,reason the ,father1 and the ,seed of ,reason the ,mother1 as ,i said before1 is that motional ,voice all ,witches and ,wizards have1 whereby they peep and mutter in themselves1 as if they did hear ,voices and see ,shapes1 and living ,spirits arise out of the ,ground1 as the ,witch of ,endor said to ,king ,saul1 ,she saw ,gods ascend out of the earth4 ,when as there was no ,spirit nor ,shape came out of the ,ground1 at all2 but the ,gods she saw ascend out of the ,earth came out of her own ,imagination1 even that ,familiar ,spirit begotten in her1 it seemed unto her as if it did ascend out of the ,earth1 but those ,gods she said she saw ascend out of the ,earth1 they ascended out of her own ,imagination1 and ,saul believed her1 and so was ,partakers with her1 and he did believe that she had raised ,samuel's ,spirit out of the ,earth1 as the ,witch had said4 ,and this is to be minded by the ,reader1 that when ,spirits are to be raised by ,witches1 her ,familiar ,spirit always ariseth out of her own self1 even from the ,seed of ,reason and ,imagination of her own ,heart1 whereby she doth hear ,voices within her1 whispering low ,voices1 as if some other ,spirits without her did spake with a low ,voice unto her1 and present ,shapes unto her dazled ,eyes1 which seemeth to the ,witch to be real ,voices of a ,spirit without her1 and a real ,shape without her2 when as in ,deed and in ,truth1 it ariseth out of her own self1 even from the ,seed of ,reason1 and ,imagination of her own ,heart1 whereby she doth hear ,voices within her1 whispering low ,voices1 as if some other ,spirit without her did speak with a low ,voice to her1 and present ,shapes to her dazled ,eyes1 which seemeth to the ,witch to be a real ,voice of a ,spirit without her1 and a real ,shape without her1 when as in ,deed and in ,truth it is nothing else but a motional ,voice begotten in her self1 and ,shapes begotten in her self1 by the ,imagination in the ,womb of ,reason as aforesaid1 which is that ,familiar ,spirit4 ,which is that ,familiar ,spirit she doth deal with1 she thinking it is from some ,spirit without her1 she not knowing it is begotten in her2 and this ,familiar ,spirit begotten in her1 it whispers within her with a low motional ,voice1 as if some ,spirit did whisper out of the ,ground4 ,according to that saying of the ,prophet1 ,isa4 xxix4 #d4 concerning the ,destruction or ,judgment of ,god upon ,jerusalem2 the ,words are these1 ,and thou shalt be brought down and shalt speak out of the ,ground1 and thy ,speech shall be low out of the ,dust1 and thy ,voice shall be as one that hath a ,familiar ,spirit out of the ,ground1 and thy ,speech shall whisper out of the ,dust4 ,as if the ,prophet should say1 ,seeing you have refused to hearken to the ,voice of the ,prophets1 which hath declared the ,mind of the ,god of ,israel openly with a loud ,voice2 you have heard them speak plain ,words with your ,ears1 but you have not believed they spoke ,truth unto you2 therefore you have rejected the ,word of the ,lord by his ,prophets1 and have persecuted and slain some of them as false ,prophets1 because they spake unto you in the ,name of the ,lord1 as it was revealed by the ,spirit of ,revelation in them4 ,they spake plain ,words unto you1 as might be heard to the outward ,ear by the ,standers-by2 they were visible ,men that spake unto you1 so that you need not to enquire after any that hath a ,familiar ,spirit1 who speaketh so softly and so low1 that no ,standers-by can hear this ,familiar ,spirit speak1 but he or she that hath it4 ,but as for plain ,words openly declared by the ,prophets1 and publickly heard by the outward ,ear1 these you have rejected1 despised1 persecuted1 and counted them ,liars1 ,deceivers1 false ,prophets1 and such like3 ,therefore ,god hath given you over to strong ,delusions1 to enquire of a ,witch1 who makes you believe that ,spirits may be raised out of the ,ground1 and that ,spirits do come out of the ,dust1 and whisper to the ,witch with a low ,voice1 that none can hear but her self4 ,so that those that enquire do believe as ,king ,saul did1 that a ,familiar ,spirit can enter into the ,dust or ,ground1 and bring up another ,man's ,spirit that is dead without its ,body1 and so their two ,spirits whisper so low together1 that none can hear that stands by1 nor tell what this ,spirit that is raised did say1 nor whether the ,spirit so raised is gone into the ,body again1 or into the ,ground from whence the ,witch said it was raised2 which ,spirit that is said to be raised1 or said to speak out of the ,ground1 ,i say1 it was raised out of the ,witches own ,body1 and no where else2 and those low ,voices and ,whisperings were both within her1 and not without her4 ,,chap4 ,,viii4 ,now how a ,man may be said to be brought down1 and shall speak out of the ,ground1 and their ,speech shall be low out of the ,dust3 ,the ,meaning is1 when a particular ,man or ,woman1 or a ,people or ,nation1 be in the same ,distress and ,condition as ,king ,saul was2 that is1 in ,danger of loosing his ,crown and ,kingdom1 his natural ,life2 and not only so1 but his ,soul is tormented with the ,fear of eternal ,death2 this maketh the ,heart of ,man to melt in him2 it makes his ,speech to grow weak and feeble1 so that his ,speech can hardly be heard2 it is even as if a ,man did speak out of ,death1 or out of the ,ground4 ,a ,man with the ,extremity of outward and inward ,trouble1 he becomes ,speechless1 yet he speaks in his ,thoughts1 but so low1 that none that stands by can hear or tell what he saith4 ,this many can experience1 that have seen their ,friend or ,relation in this ,condition2 this is like speaking out of the ,ground1 and low out of the ,dust4 ,and the ,voice of every such troubled ,soul1 who hath the ,plagues of this ,life1 and the ,horror of ,conscience as to the ,life to come1 as ,king ,saul had the ,voice such ,people have1 is as one that hath a ,familiar ,spirit out of the ,ground1 and their ,speech shall be as if one did whisper out of the ,dust4 ,this ,place of ,scripture hath the same ,meaning as the ,place before-mentioned1 ,isa4 viii4 #ai4 where such as ,king ,saul was1 are bade to seek unto them that have ,familiar ,spirits1 and unto ,wizards1 that peep and mutter1 7that is7 that whisper out of the ,ground2 for whisper1 peep1 and mutter1 signifies all one ,thing4 ,these ,things did ,manasseh1 #b ,kings xxi4 #f4 he dealt with ,familiar ,spirits1 and did great ,abominations2 he made his ,sons to pass thorough the ,fire1 in offering them up a ,sacrifice to an unknown ,devil1 which he thought was ,god2 and this he did by the ,whisperings of the ,familiar ,spirit within him1 and being acquainted with others1 who were known to have ,familiar ,spirits also4 ,and so did several other ,kings of ,israel deal with ,familiar ,spirits1 and had those low whispering ,voices in themselves1 as if ,spirits had risen out of the ,ground1 or from the ,dust to speak unto them2 and this they did attain unto by ,industry1 in that they forsook the ,words of the ,prophets1 and would not hearken unto them1 but gave themselves up to follow the ,imaginations of their own ,hearts2 imagining they might as well know ,god1 and what ,worship would please ,god as well as the ,prophets2 therefore why should we1 being ,kings1 hearken unto such mean inferiour ,men as these8 ,may not we by our ,familiar ,spirit as well know ,god1 and what ,worship will please him by our ,familiar ,spirit1 as the ,prophets do by the ,spirit of ,prophecy8 ,why should we be in such ,bondage1 that we can do nothing but what they say1 the ,lord commands us to do8 ,so the ,imagination saith1 ,come1 we will not be tied up thus2 we will see what our ,familiar ,spirit begotten in us will do2 we will erect and build ,altars in several ,places1 and sacrifice ,bullocks and ,lambs to an unknown ,god2 and so by this ,means they procure in themselves low motional ,voices1 which whisper in themselves1 which becomes in them a ,familiar ,spirit1 is produced in themselves3 ,and there is a more ,increase of low motional ,voices1 which doth whisper in the ,mind1 moving them to a further ,degree of ,knowledge1 and endeavour after more ,voices1 so that to attain to this diabolical ,wisdom in a more high ,measure4 ,they are moved by this low ,voice within them to offer up their own ,children in ,sacrifices to their imaginary ,god1 which they believe is an invisible ,spirit without a ,body1 which reveals these ,things unto them1 and whispers and speaks those ,voices unto them4 ,they count nothing too dear for this their imaginary ,god1 no not their own ,sons and ,daughters1 as ,manasseh and others did1 that made their ,sons and ,daughters pass through the ,fire as a ,sacrifice to their imaginary ,god1 that had spoke so many ,voices to them1 and had whispered to them4 ,but all these ,whisperings and low ,voices1 and peeping of ,spirits out of the ,ground1 as they thought1 ,i say1 they were all within them2 for when they came in any ,trouble1 their ,familiar ,spirit departs from them1 and will not comfort them any more1 let it be either in ,poor or ,rich1 nay1 ,kings that have dealt with ,familiar ,spirits1 when they have been in ,trouble1 all their comfort hath been lost1 as the poorest ,witch that is1 as may be seen by ,manasseh and other ,king spoken of in the ,scripture4 ,now observe1 when ,god doth bring upon a ,people1 ,nation1 or particular ,person1 some great ,judgment and ,destruction1 let it be either outward or inward in the ,mind1 when it comes upon a ,people1 ,nation1 or particular ,person1 for their ,sins and ,wickedness they have committed1 in forsaking the ,lord's ,prophets1 and dealing with ,witches and ,familiar ,spirits2 as ,saul forsook the ,lord and went to a ,witch1 and ,manasseh1 and several other ,kings of ,israel1 who ought only to have obeyed the ,prophets of the ,lord2 but they forsook him1 and enquired of ,witches and ,wizards1 and dealt with ,familiar ,spirits themselves1 and caused the ,people to worship the ,devil 7whom they imagined to be ,god7 instead of the true ,god1 whom the ,prophets would have had them to worship4 ,but when this ,punishment for ,sin is inflicted upon a ,people1 ,nation1 or particular ,person1 for dealing with ,familiar ,spirits1 and worshipping of ,devils2 when ,punishment comes1 it makes the ,heart or ,hearts to fail1 for the ,spirit is brought down by this ,judgment even to ,death1 and so goeth to the ,ground2 so that the very ,fear1 ,trouble1 and ,sorrow of ,heart1 shall speak as it were out of the ,dust1 or out of ,death2 for ,sin will speak out of the ,ground1 and the ,speech of ,death will be low in them that have escaped the ,destruction which others did go through2 for there will be a ,resemblance in those that have escaped1 how their ,friends and ,relations are fallen to the ,ground or ,dust of the ,earth for their ,wickedness1 so that ,sorrow and ,grief will speak in the ,mind of those that have escaped with a low ,speech1 even as one doth who hath a ,familiar ,spirit4 ,or as if their ,friends and ,relations1 the ,remembrance of their ,destruction being taken away in ,wrath for ,sin1 it speaks a small low ,voice of ,grief and ,sorrow in the ,heart of those that are alive1 even as one that hath a ,familiar ,spirit1 even a low motional ,voice of ,sorrow and ,grief1 and it cometh as it were out of the ,ground1 or out of the ,dust4 ,that is the very ,influence of ,grief and ,sorrow1 for their dead ,friends and ,people2 it causeth1 where ,grief is1 to hear as it were low ,voices and small ,speeches1 even out of the ,ground or out of the ,dust of the ,earth3 ,just as it was with ,cain in another ,case1 the ,lord said to ,cain1 ,thy ,brother's ,blood crieth from the ,ground for ,vengeance2 and so the ,blood of those that were slain under the ,altar did from the ,ground cry for ,vengeance1 as in ,rev4 vi4 #aj4 it crieth for ,vengeance in the ,consciences of all bloody ,persecutors4 ,so in like ,manner doth the ,death and ,destruction of a ,people1 who are destroyed for wicked ,idolatry1 as those were the ,prophet ,isaiah speaketh of1 they spake from the ,ground a low ,speech in the ,conscience of those that were concerned1 ,grief1 ,sorrow1 and ,fear of the same ,punishment1 and such like4 ,,chap4 ,,ix4 ,for where ,grief and ,sorrow is rooted and settled in the ,heart1 it speaketh with low motional ,voices in the ,mind2 that is1 the thought of ,fear in the ,mind1 both of temporal ,losses and the ,loss of eternal ,peace4 ,the ,fear moves to and fro in that ,mind1 as if it were a ,speech out of the ,ground2 for the ,thoughts of the ,heart are low ,voices which cannot be heard by any but themselves4 ,so is it with those that have a ,familiar ,spirit1 their ,voices and ,speech they hear from ,spirits without them1 as if ,spirits did speak to them out of the ,ground3 ,which ,speech they say they hear1 is nothing else but the ,thoughts that pass to and fro in their own ,minds1 a low motional ,voice in themselves1 as if ,spirits did speak to them with a low ,voice out of the ,ground1 or out of the ,dust4 ,for their ,faith is strong1 and above all those that come to enquire of a ,witch1 they do all believe that ,spirits may be raised without ,bodies out of the ,ground1 as the ,witch doth2 so they both do believe1 that the ,spirit came out of the ,ground that spake those low ,voices to the ,witch1 and she tells it to the other that enquire of her1 and they believe her as ,king ,saul did4 ,so they are wholly departed from the ,lord1 and believe a ,lye1 to think that ,spirits can be raised out of the ,ground without ,bodies after ,men have been dead2 it is a ,thing ,god never did2 we never read in ,scripture1 that ,god or his ,prophets did ever raise any ,spirits out of the ,ground without ,bodies after they were dead2 but we read in ,scripture1 that ,god and his ,prophets have raised some from the dead with ,bodies1 as that of ,lazarus being raised out of the ,ground by ,christ1 and the ,child that was raised from ,death by the ,prophet ,elijah1 and another ,child raised from ,death to ,life by the ,prophet ,elisha1 and several others come forth out of the ,ground at the rising again of ,christ from ,death1 as those ,saints that did arise out of the ,graves1 and appeared to many that were alive2 these all did arise out of the ,graves with ,bodies after they were dead1 and ,lazarus came forth out of the ,ground after he was dead1 but his ,spirit came not out of the ,ground without his ,body1 but ,body and ,soul came out of the ,ground together4 ,for it was always ,god's ,practice to raise ,soul and ,body together2 and because the ,imagination of ,reason in those that have a ,familiar ,spirit cannot do so1 nor those that enquire of them1 therefore they do imagine that ,spirit may be raised out of the ,ground without ,bodies1 or assume a ,shape and appear like a ,body1 yet it shall be of no ,substance1 a ,shape that can neither be felt nor handled by the ,hand of ,man4 ,now mind1 all those ,god doth raise out of the ,ground after they were dead1 they may be handled and felt1 though they be ,spiritual ,bodies1 yet they may be felt and handled1 as ,christ said to ,thomas1 ,feel me and handle me1 after he was risen from the dead1 and ,thomas laid his ,fingers in the ,print of the ,nails1 and on his ,side4 ,yet ,christ was at that time a ,spiritual ,body that was risen from the ,dead1 that might be felt and handled1 and not a ,spirit without a ,body1 as most ,people do vainly imagine that ,spirits may be raised without ,bodies4 ,and as for that ,lazarus and others1 that were raised by the ,power of ,god out of the ,ground after they had been dead1 they had ,bodies as well as ,spirits that might be seen with natural ,eyes1 and handled and felt with natural ,hands4 ,so that ,god's ,power in raising the ,dead1 it is no ,cheat2 the ,creature is not cheated nor deceived1 but is fully satisfied in his ,mind4 ,but for a ,familiar ,spirit to say or tell ,people1 they do or can raise ,spirits out of the ,ground in such a ,shape without a ,body or bodily ,substance2 or shall say1 they hear ,voices from this ,spirit so raised1 is a mere ,cheat to the ,ignorant and ,unbelieving1 and leads them into the ,pit of ,darkness1 and makes them fear where no ,fear is1 and are afraid of their own ,shadows2 for it is the ,nature of ,reason the ,devil to imagine1 that this way of raising of ,spirits without ,bodies1 to be of a more high ,nature then to raise ,spirit and ,body together1 as ,god doth2 and the ,imagination doth conceive it a more greater ,power1 to raise ,spirits without ,bodies out of the ,dust of the ,ground1 than it is to raise ,spirit and ,body together1 as ,christ did2 for ,christ always raised ,spirit and ,body together1 as the ,scriptures do testify4 ,for the ,reason in ,man doth send forth the ,imagination of the ,heart1 the unclean ,spirit in ,man walking through dry ,places1 seeking rest but can find none2 the ignorant dark ,thoughts of the ,imagination goeth out of a ,man1 to enquire of one that hath a ,familiar ,spirit1 seeking rest but can find none1 as ,king ,saul did3 ,for the ,imagination of the ,heart being continually ,evil1 it always walketh through dry ,places1 where no matter of ,life is to be had1 to quench the ,thirst of ,sin or a defiled ,conscience2 neither can the ,thoughts of ,imagination be satisfied with what a ,witch or a ,familiar saith2 therefore called dry ,places3 ,they may be called dry1 because the ,heart is never satisfied with what a ,witch saith1 for she always saith a ,lie4 ,to tell a ,man or ,woman1 that she doth or can raise ,spirits out of the ,ground without ,bodies1 as the ,witch of ,endor did to ,king ,saul1 or that she did hear any low ,voice or ,speech of ,samuel out of the ,ground1 as she told the ,king2 ,i say1 she did but cheat the ,king1 and made him believe she had raised ,samuel1 and had heard him speak to her with a low ,speech out of the ,ground1 which had revealed unto her what sad ,things would befal the ,king3 so he believing her ,words1 his ,spirit fainted1 so that no ,strength was in him2 when as in ,deed and in ,truth1 that ,samuel she said she saw arise out of the ,earth1 he did arise out of her own ,heart2 and that low ,speech she said ,samuel spake1 it was all in her self by the ,motions of the ,familiar ,spirit begotten in her4 ,and ,king ,saul believing her1 being ,partaker of her ,faith1 ,samuel spake a low motional ,voice or ,speech in him also1 he believing it was ,samuel spake out of the ,earth1 but it was nothing else but the ,voice of his own guilty ,conscience within himself1 as it was the ,voice her ,familiar ,spirit in her self that spake as aforesaid4 ,so that the ,meaning of the ,prophet ,isaiah1 ,chap4 xxix4 #d4 concerning the ,destruction of ,jerusalem1 that ,grief and ,sorrow of ,heart should speak in themselves2 as if the ,speech came put of the ,ground1 because they saw in themselves nothing but ,death and ,destruction did approach1 and was like to follow upon them all1 fearing they should all be destroyed by their ,enemies1 and slain and fall to the ,ground3 ,so that ,fear of ,heart of ,destruction1 it spake a low ,speech in every ,man's ,heart1 even as if it spake out of the ,ground1 or as one that hath a ,familiar ,spirit2 for it is the ,nature of a ,familiar ,spirit to speak as if the ,speech did proceed from the ,earth1 and the ,speech doth seem to the ,witch1 and those that enquire of her1 to whisper out of the ,dust3 ,when as the ,speech cometh not out of the ,ground1 neither doth it whisper out of the ,dust1 as is imagined by most ,people1 because ,ignorance and ,darkness hath overspread the ,minds of most ,people in the ,world4 ,but that low ,speech the ,familiar ,spirit speaks or whispers1 it is out of her own ,heart1 even that ,wisdom begotten by the ,imagination in her own ,thoughts1 that speaks as aforesaid1 and no ,spirit without her1 as hath vainly been imagined4 ,so likewise the ,people of the ,jews1 the ,fear1 ,grief1 and ,sorrow of ,heart1 being begotten in them for such like ,sins1 as that of ,witchcraft1 ,idolatry1 dealing with ,familiar ,spirits1 causing their ,sons and ,daughters to pass through the ,fire as burnt ,offerings and ,sacrifices unto ,devils1 which they supposed to be ,gods2 these ,things caused their ,hearts to fail and faint1 and their ,thoughts were troubled within themselves1 which causeth their ,speech to grow weak and low within them1 even as if some ,familiar did speak out of the ,ground1 or whisper out of the ,dust1 ,fear1 ,grief1 and ,sorrow of ,heart3 ,but all come out of their own grieved ,hearts1 who were punished for their ,sins2 and not out of the natural ,ground or natural ,dust1 as ,people do vainly imagine4 ,this is the true ,meaning of the ,prophet's ,words1 and how ,familiar ,spirits may be said to speak out of the ,ground1 and whisper out of the ,dust4 ,,chap4 ,x4 ,again1 it hath been objected by many1 that ,spirits may be raised without ,bodies1 and that ,spirits may be talked with after they have been dead and buried2 and that ,spirits have appeared in a ,shape to several ,people1 yet this ,spirit so appearing hath no ,body nor ,substance at all1 neither can it be felt or handled by mortal ,man1 nor no immortal ,creature neither3 this is the vain ,conceit of most ,people4 ,but to satisfy the ,reader in this1 ,i declare1 that there is no immortal ,spirit whatsoever1 but it hath a ,spiritual ,body suitable to its ,spirit2 if the ,spirit be immortal1 the ,body is immortal also3 ,for this ,i say1 no ,spirit can have any ,being at all without a ,body1 no not ,god himself1 who was from ,eternity2 his ,spirit could not be from ,eternity without a ,spiritual ,body1 in ,form like ,man2 they were both from ,eternity1 and the one was never divided nor separated from the other1 but they were both ,eternal4 ,and further ,i declare1 that ,god was a ,spiritual ,body from ,eternity1 in ,form like a ,man2 therefore ,god created ,man in his own ,image and ,likeness4 ,now observe1 if ,man hath a ,body suitable to his ,spirit1 so hath ,god a ,body suitable to his ,spirit1 else ,man was not created in his ,image1 if ,god hath never a ,body1 but is all ,spirit1 as ,people do vainly imagine4 ,for this ,i know1 that ,god was ,spirit and ,body1 in ,form like a ,man1 from ,eternity1 and his ,spirit was never divided nor separated from his ,body1 but they were both ,eternal4 ,so likewise is it with ,angels and ,men1 and all other ,creatures2 where-ever the ,spirit of ,life is1 there is ,bodies of ,life also2 let it be either in ,spiritual ,bodies1 or in ,natural ,bodies4 ,for if the ,body of either of these be dead1 the ,spirit is dead also2 and if the ,spirit be dead either in ,spiritual ,body or ,natural ,body1 the ,body is dead also3 ,for the one cannot have any sensible ,being without the other4 ,and further ,i say1 that they were both together ,spirit and ,body from ,eternity in ,god the ,creator1 and he hath ordered and created all his ,creatures1 both celestial and terrestrial1 that ,spirit and ,body should be one living ,being1 and that one should not subsist nor have no sensible being without the other3 ,even as ,god himself could not enjoy no sensible ,living being without a ,body1 he knowing this in himself4 ,therefore he created all his ,creatures ,spiritual and ,natural1 with ,bodies suitable to their ,spirits1 and ,spirits suitable to their ,bodies1 so that one might not be divided nor separated from the other2 for if one dieth1 the other dieth2 and if the ,spirit live1 the ,body liveth also4 ,for this ,i say1 that if the ,spirit of ,god himself could not be without a ,body from ,eternity1 how then is it possible that his ,creatures should have ,spirits without ,bodies1 seeing he himself his ,spirit could not have any ,being without his ,body from ,eternity4 ,but this ,conceit1 that the ,spirit or ,soul of ,man is immortal1 and cannot die1 and may have a ,being without a ,body1 and appear in a ,shape without any ,substance2 this vain ,conceit proceeded first from the ,imagination of ,reason in ,man1 even from ,cain1 the first ,devil in ,flesh and ,bone4 ,and this ,imagination in ,cain his ,posterity1 being ,heathen ,men1 who had no ,communion with ,god1 nor ,revelation of ,faith1 as the ,sons of ,adam and the ,sons1 of ,seth1 the ,generation of the ,righteous1 had2 they knew that the ,spirit and ,body was all one ,substance4 ,but the ,imagination of ,reason1 ,cain his ,posterity1 the ,heathen ,opinion1 do imagine the ,spirit of ,man to be immortal1 and cannot die2 and that ,spirits may appear in ,shapes without ,bodies2 and that ,spirits may go out of the ,body1 and go to ,heaven or ,hell and leave the ,body to be laid in the ,ground1 as the ,quakers and others do4 ,and this ,imagination of ,reason in ,man hath created to it self a new ,creation1 which ,god never created4 ,man hath created and made in his ,imagination a ,spirit without a ,body1 and that this ,spirit so created is immortal1 and cannot die1 nor is not capable of ,death1 that it can slip out of the ,body1 and that it can have a ,being when it is gone out of the ,body1 and appear in a ,shape without ,substance or hath ,power to assume what ,shape it please1 and yet this ,shape1 it doth assume1 shall have no ,substance yet it shall appear in a ,shape and fright ,people4 ,and the ,imagination of ,reason in ,man hath created ,man in his own ,image and ,likeness1 as ,god did ,adam3 ,as thus1 ,first1 he hath conceived in his ,imagination1 that ,god is a ,spirit without a ,body4 ,secondly1 he conceiveth in his ,imagination that the ,devil is a ,spirit flying in the ,air1 which can neither be seen nor felt2 yet this ,devil or ,spirit without a ,body doth tempt ,man to ,evil1 whereby ,man is punished1 and the ,tempter he is escaped away without ,punishment4 ,also it is conceived by the ,imagination1 that this ,devil or ,spirit is in ,hell-fire1 and in ,chains of ,darkness1 and can go no further then ,god will permit him1 because his ,chain is no longer then ,god hath limited him4 ,also it is conceived in the ,imagination1 notwithstanding the ,devil is chained1 and in ,hell-fire tormented1 yet he being a ,spirit without a ,body1 he is so swift that he can be in all ,places at one ,time1 so that he can tempt thousands of ,men and ,women to sin at one and the same ,time1 and they themselves never the wiser1 nor know him when he tempted them4 ,all this the imaginary ,devil can do1 and much more2 and yet be in ,hell fire1 and tied in a ,chain at the same ,time1 and all but one ,devil1 a ,spirit without a ,body4 ,also the ,imagination hath conceived that the ,soul of ,man is a ,spirit infused or put into the ,body by ,god himself1 and that ,man begets the ,body1 but not the ,soul or ,life of ,man1 that is conceived to be immortal1 or a ,spirit that is so invisible1 that cannot be seen nor known what it is1 and that it can live of it self when it is gone out of the ,body4 ,thus the ,imagination of ,reason the ,devil1 hath created its own ,soul in its own ,image and ,likeness2 and this hath been the ,occasion of producing of ,familiar ,spirits1 and of dealing with those that have a ,familiar ,spirit1 being conformed to the very ,image of the ,devil4 ,many ,things more of the like ,nature might be said in this ,point4 ,but here the ,reader may see if there be any true ,light of ,faith in him1 how the ,imagination of ,reason in ,man hath created ,spirits without ,bodies1 and that the ,devil is a ,body-less ,spirit1 and in ,hell-fire1 and in a ,chain of ,darkness1 and yet at ,liberty at the same time to tempt ,people2 and in ,hell-fire1 and yet out of the ,fire when he pleaseth2 and that he may be called out of ,hell1 or out of the ,ground1 when a ,witch by her ,familiar ,spirit doth call2 and that he shall appear in any ,shape they will have him1 yet he shall have no ,body nor ,substance1 but a mere ,shadow2 yet this ,shadow shall speak with a low ,voice or ,speech out of the ,ground2 as if ,speech could proceed from a ,shadow without ,substance4 ,so that the ,imagination of the ,heart of ,man hath created to it self a ,devil1 that ,god never created2 and the ,imagination of ,man's ,heart hath created his own ,soul in the ,image and ,likeness of the ,devil1 that is to say1 a ,spirit without a ,body2 and that a ,spirit without a ,body may be capable of ,joy or ,sorrow2 and that a ,spirit may subsist and have a being in ,joy or ,sorrow without a ,body1 which ,thing is impossible4 ,but observe the ,creation that the ,imagination of ,man hath created to himself2 for it is the ,nature of ,imagination of ,reason the ,devil1 he always creates ,spirits without ,bodies1 but ,god the ,creator he always creates ,spirits and ,bodies together1 for ,god never created any ,spirit without a ,body2 for when ,god made ,man after his own ,image and ,likeness1 he made him with a ,body as well as a ,spirit1 else ,man could not be made in the ,image and ,likeness of ,god1 if ,god had a ,body of his own as well as a ,spirit4 ,so that ,adam was made or created in the ,image and ,likeness of ,god2 for ,adam had a visible ,body and ,spirit1 undivided and unseparable one from the other2 they were but one visible sensible ,being1 and when the ,life was dead the ,body was dead1 and when the ,body is really dead1 the ,spirit and ,life was and is dead also2 and both are laid in the ,ground together1 as is declared in all our ,writings1 but more especially in that ,book entituled1 ,the ,mortality of the ,soul4 ,,chap4 ,,xi4 ,also ,i do further declare1 that ,god did never create any ,spirit without a ,body1 neither of ,angels1 nor ,men1 nor no other ,creature1 neither in ,heaven above1 nor in the ,earth beneath1 nor the ,waters under the ,earth4 ,there is no ,spirit or ,life whatsoever that is created of ,god1 but it hath a ,body to that ,life or ,spirit2 but if a ,spirit have any ,being without a ,body1 that ,spirit is none of ,god's ,creation2 for ,god never created any ,spirit whatsoever without a ,body1 as ,i said before4 ,but the ,imagination of ,reason in ,man1 which is the ,devil1 hath created all ,creatures in the ,imagination to have ,spirits without ,bodies1 both of ,angels above and ,man here on ,earth1 and all ,creatures upon the ,earth1 and in the ,waters1 that have the ,breath of ,life1 the ,imagination of ,reason saith1 their ,spirits may subsist without ,bodies1 or go out of those ,bodies they have1 and enter into other ,bodies1 and appear in the ,shape of a ,body1 and yet be of no ,substance3 so that the ,devil's ,creation is all of ,spirits without ,bodies1 and ,god's ,creation is all with ,bodies and ,spirits together4 ,and this ,darkness hath overspread the ,nature of ,man all the ,world over1 which is the ,occasion of that ,opinion of ,houses and ,places being haunted with evil ,spirits1 and ,spirits walking without ,bodies1 and dealing with ,familiar ,spirits1 that peep1 and mutter1 and whisper as it were out of the ,ground4 ,these ,things and many more are produced by the ,imagination of the ,heart of ,man1 for the ,imagination of ,man's ,heart is evil1 and continually evil2 for it hath given a ,being to ,spirits without ,bodies1 to fright it self to that which hath no ,being of it self4 ,for ,i declare and perfectly know1 that there is no such ,thing as ,spirits to walk without ,bodies1 nor assume any ,shape after ,death1 nor be raised out of the ,ground by any ,witch or any ,familiar ,spirit whatsoever2 it is all produced out of the dark ,imagination of the ,heart1 where ,ignorance beareth ,rule1 for there is no such ,thing can be presented but to the ,ignorant and dark minded ,people4 ,thus ,i have given the ,reader to understand something more concerning the ,power of ,witches1 and how they may be said to raise ,spirits out of the ,ground1 and from whence that low ,speech doth come1 with those ,scriptures opened that speak as if a ,familiar ,spirit did hear whispering out of the ,dust4 ,also ,i have given the ,interpretation of that in ,samuel concerning the ,witch of ,endor1 and those ,places of ,scripture in ,isaiah2 these ,places are the most concerning ,spirits being raised without ,bodies1 of any in the ,scriptures2 but there have been some other ,places of ,scriptures1 that do seem to carry a shew as if ,spirits might rise again without ,bodies1 and ,i have been desired by some to open those ,scriptures that seem to tend to that ,purpose1 though the common and general ,objection amongst all ,people is1 that of the ,witch of ,endor and ,king ,saul1 which ,i have opened before2 yet for the further ,satisfaction of the ,reader1 ,i shall open and interprete the other ,places objected1 that seem to tend to the same thing4 ,the ,places of ,scripture are three2 the first is ,isa4 lxi4 #a4 the ,words are these1 ,the ,spirit of the ,lord ,god is upon me1 because the ,lord hath anointed me to preach good ,tidings unto the ,meek3 ,he hath sent me to bind up the ,broken-hearted1 to proclaim ,liberty to the ,captives1 and the opening of the ,prison to them that are bound----,so ,luke iv4 #ah4 the ,words in ,luke are much to the same ,purpose1 and little ,difference2 only that which ,isaiah did prophesy of1 it was fulfilled by ,christ in his time----,so the first ,epistle of ,peter1 ,chap4 iii4 and #ah1 #ai1 #bj4 ,verses2 the ,words are these1 ,for ,christ also hath once suffered for ,sin1 the ,just for the ,unjust2 that he might bring us to ,god1 being put to ,death in the ,flesh1 but quickened by the ,spirit4 ,verse #ai4 ,by which also he went and preached unto the ,spirits in ,prison3 ,verse #bj4 ,which sometime were disobedient1 when once the ,long-suffering of ,god waited in the ,days of ,noah1 while the ,ark was a preparing1 wherein few 7that is7 eight ,souls were saved by ,water4 ,,chap4 ,,xii4 ,as for that ,saying of the ,prophet ,isaiah1 it was a ,prophecy of ,christ1 that he should be anointed to preach ,glad-tidings1 unto the ,meek1 and that he was sent to bind up the ,broken-hearted1 to proclaim ,liberty to the ,captives1 and the opening of the ,prison to them that are bound4 ,this ,prophecy was fulfilled when he was upon ,earth1 as may plainly appear by those ,words in ,luke aforementioned4 ,also the ,reader may understand1 that these ,places of ,scripture have no ,relation at all to the raising of ,spirits without ,bodies2 nor of ,spirits being in ,prison1 nor delivered out of ,prison by the ,power of ,christ without ,bodies4 ,but the ,meaning is this1 that the ,spirit of the ,lord ,almighty was upon ,christ1 and in him1 and did anoint him to preach ,glad-tidings of ,salvation to the ,meek in ,heart1 who did believe in him and trusted in his ,words2 all such as were broken-hearted1 who were led ,captive by the ,error1 ,ignorance1 and ,darkness of the ,mind2 he came to proclaim ,liberty to the ,spirit of ,man1 who was in ,captivity2 and to open the ,prison-door of ,mens ,hearts4 ,for this ,i say1 all ,mens ,spirits by ,nature are shut up in the ,prison of ,spiritual ,darkness in the ,mind1 and are lead ,captive by the ,ignorance of ,truth2 so that the ,spirit or ,soul of ,man is shut up a ,prisoner in the ,body of ,man1 until the true ,god and ,saviour hath been preached to them1 as it was by ,christ himself1 when on ,earth he was anointed to preach ,glad-tidings of ,salvation2 and he anointed his ,apostles to preach ,glad-tidings of ,peace to ,men1 and to open the ,prison1 and to deliver the ,captive out of ,captivity1 and to set the ,spirits of many that were in a ,prison of ,darkness in their own ,minds go free3 ,this ,prophecy was fulfilled at that ,time by ,christ and his ,apostles in their ,commission4 ,but the same ,captivity and ,prison of ,darkness is now upon the ,spirits of all ,men1 as it was at that ,time3 ,for this ,i say1 and many ,people can ,witness1 that their ,spirits have been shut up ,prisoners in ,spiritual ,darkness in their own ,bodies1 until the true ,god the ,saviour hath been preached unto them by his last ,messengers4 ,for this ,i declare1 that those ,words of the ,prophet ,isaiah1 they were spoken with ,relation to a ,spiritual ,liberty1 and to a ,spiritual ,captivity1 of the ,mind or ,spirit of ,man1 and not to a ,natural ,captivity4 ,neither was it meant the opening of the natural ,prison ,doors1 to them that were bound by the ,powers of the ,nations2 but the ,doors of ,mens ,hearts were opened at the preaching of ,christ and his ,apostles1 in that ,light1 and ,life1 and ,salvation was preached unto them1 that whoever ,believed that this ,jesus is the ,christ1 the ,saviour of the ,world1 should be saved and delivered from the ,fear of ,eternal ,death3 ,so that the ,soul of ,man that was lead ,captive into ,prison1 and bound in ,chains of ,darkness1 and strong ,doors lockt fast to keep the ,spirit of ,men in ,prison1 by the ,works of the ,law1 and the ,expounders of the ,law before ,christ came1 the ,spirit of ,reason in them did lead the ,generality of ,people their ,spirits into ,spiritual ,captivity1 and shut them up in ,prison1 and tied their ,spirits up in the ,observation of the ,ceremonial ,law of ,moses4 ,which was as ,chains of ,darkness3 and not only so1 but shut the ,door of ,hope upon them1 so that there was no ,hope to be saved in them1 but by observing the ,law aforesaid1 which ,paul calls beggarly ,rudiments1 ,gal4 iii4 ,so that this ,spiritual ,captivity and being bound in ,prison1 and the ,doors being shut1 it was the ,spirits of ,people that were ,captives and ,prisoners in their own ,bodies1 kept by the ,legal and ,ceremonial ,righteousness of the ,law of ,moses2 and when ,christ came to preach1 and to give ,power to his ,apostles to preach the ,gospel of ,truth1 both to ,jew and ,gentile1 then was the ,door of ,hope opened in ,people's ,hearts1 and many that were bound in ,prison1 whose ,spirits were led ,captive1 they were set at ,liberty from that ,bondage of the ,ceremonial ,law1 wherein they were bound1 and brought out of that ,prison of ,darkness in the ,mind1 into the glorious ,light and ,life of ,faith1 by the preaching of ,christ and his ,apostles4 ,then was this ,prophecy of ,isaiah fulfilled in the ,apostles ,commission2 then was ,liberty preached to the ,spirits of many that were bound and in ,prison in their own ,minds1 the ,word of ,faith preached unto them1 it opened a ,door of ,hope of ,deliverance from the ,bondage of the ,law as aforesaid1 wherewith they were bound2 so that by ,faith they had in ,christ1 their ,chains fell off their ,feet1 and ,darkness of their ,understanding2 so that they were at perfect ,liberty1 and delivered out of ,prison1 and the ,prison-,door of ,hope in ,christ being opened1 all true ,believers in ,christ were set at ,liberty1 free from ,captivity1 and out of that ,spiritual ,prison of ,darkness into the glorious ,liberty of the ,sons and ,daughters of ,god for ever and ever4 ,so is it now in this ,commission of the ,spirit1 we the ,witnesses of the ,spirit have preached ,glad-tidings of ,salvation1 and have opened the ,prison-,doors of ,mens ,hearts1 and have let many out of that ,spiritual ,prison1 that were bound to the ,righteousness set up by the ,imagination of ,reason now in these last ,days1 who were led ,captive by their own ,traditions1 and kept in ,prison in their own ,bodies for many ,years2 but by the ,declaration of ,truth in all our ,writings and our ,speakings1 many ,people have been delivered out of ,captivity and out of ,prison1 their ,spirits have been let loose out of the ,chains of ,darkness1 because the ,door of their ,hearts hath been opened by the ,word of ,faith in the true ,god1 which we have preached and written2 this many can witness at this ,day the ,truth of it4 ,so that now that ,scripture is fulfilled again these last days2 and this is the true ,meaning of the ,prophet ,isaiah1 in those ,words concerning opening the ,prison1 and giving ,liberty to the ,captives that were imprisoned in their own ,bodies by the ,conceptions of the ,imaginations of their own ,hearts4 ,so that there is not the least ,colour or ,ground from those ,words1 for the ,reason of ,man to think that ,spirits may be let out of ,prison without ,bodies1 or that the ,spirit of ,christ did ,preach to any ,spirit in ,prison without his ,body4 ,,chap4 ,,xiii4 ,and as for those ,words of ,peter aforenamed1 where he saith1 ,christ was put to ,death in the ,flesh1 but quickened by the ,spirit2 by which also he went and preached unto the ,spirits in ,prison1 which sometime were ,disobedient1 when once the ,long-suffering of ,god waited in the ,days of ,noah1 while the ,ark was a preparing1 c4 ,the ,meaning of those ,words are as followeth2 that ,christ was put to ,death in the ,body of his own ,flesh1 this is confessed by most ,people that profess the ,scriptures of ,truth1 but very few do truly believe1 that the ,soul or ,spirit of ,christ did die1 or was put to ,death at all1 notwithstanding the ,scripture saith1 that ,he poured out his ,soul unto ,death2 and he himself saith1 ,his ,soul was heavy unto ,death4 ,therefore that the ,reader may understand what is meant in that ,christ was put to ,death in the ,flesh but quickened by the ,spirit2 mind1 ,i declare1 that it was the ,soul or ,spirit of ,christ1 which was the ,godhead-life that dwelt in that ,body of ,flesh and ,bone of ,christ2 for1 as the ,scripture saith1 ,in him all the ,fulness of the ,godhead dwelt ,bodily3 ,and this ,godhead-life that dwelt in the ,body of ,christ's ,flesh1 it was put to ,death in the ,body of ,christ's ,flesh1 and the same ,godhead-life that was put to ,death in the ,body of his ,flesh4 ,and when ,christ's ,body was crucified upon the ,cross1 then was the ,soul and ,life of ,christ1 or the ,godhead-life did die1 and was put to ,death in that ,flesh of ,christ2 for that ,flesh of ,christ was ,god become ,flesh1 as the ,scripture saith2 and the ,soul and ,life of ,christ was the ,soul and ,life of ,god4 ,and1 ,when ,christ poured out his ,soul unto ,death1 it was the ,godhead ,life that was poured out unto ,death2 so that the ,godhead ,spirit was put to ,death1 and did die in the ,flesh of ,christ when he was ,crucified4 ,but this ,godhead ,life which was put to ,death in the ,flesh of ,christ1 it quicken'd again where it was put to ,death1 even in the same ,flesh where it was put to ,death4 ,and in its quickening again1 it raised the same ,flesh again1 and so spiritualized the same ,flesh that suffered1 and made it uncapable to suffer ,death any more4 ,for this ,i say1 no ,spirit or ,life that is put to ,death whatsoever1 could possibly quicken again in the same ,body1 but the ,life of ,god only1 so that ,christ must needs be ,god as well as ,man2 for it was ,christ that was put to ,death in the ,flesh1 and the same ,life that was put to ,death1 and did die1 that which did die did quicken again1 and so is called a quickening ,spirit4 ,now observe1 it cannot properly be called a quickening ,spirit1 if it had not been once dead3 ,for if the ,spirit and ,life of ,christ did not die1 nor was not dead1 then ,i say1 there was no need that this ,spirit and ,life1 should quicken again1 for it was always quick and alive4 ,for the ,spirit quickening doth imply1 a sensible ,life is quickned out of an insensible ,life2 as a ,child in the ,womb before it is quick1 it feeleth no ,pain1 neither doth it stir in the ,womb1 and the ,midwife doth not care to destroy it to save the ,womans ,life1 because the ,child was not quick1 it was an insensible ,life1 no more capable of ,pain then there is in ,death1 or a dead ,lump of ,earth2 but when a ,child is quick in the ,womb1 it is capable of ,pain1 though it hath not ,strength to express it to us that are strong1 yet it is capable of ,pain1 because it is quickened into a sensible ,life1 that is1 a living ,soul1 a living ,spirit1 and so may be called a quickened ,spirit of ,life1 out of that which was dead2 yet by the ,appointment of ,god in his ,creation1 and the ,warmness of the ,womb1 there is new ,life or ,spirit doth quicken in the ,womb in its ,season1 according to the ,appointment of ,god when he created all ,things1 and placed a ,law of ,generation in them4 ,so likewise the ,spirit or ,life of ,christ was put to ,death in his own ,body of ,flesh1 as aforesaid2 and in its ,season he himself had appointed before1 namely three ,days and three ,nights1 this ,spirit of ,christ so put to ,death1 it quickened again in the same ,flesh a new and ,glorious ,life1 which made that ,flesh that suffered ,glorious also4 ,and this is the true ,interpretation of ,peter's ,words1 and the ,faith of all true ,believers1 that the ,spirit1 ,life1 and ,soul of ,christ did die1 and was put to ,death in the ,body of his own ,flesh1 that was ,crucified on the ,cross by the ,jews2 and that the same ,spirit that was put to ,death1 it did quicken again out of ,death into a new and ,glorious ,life by his own ,power1 therefore called a quickening ,spirit4 ,so that here is no ,ground at all for that vain ,conceit in ,people1 who do believe that ,spirits may be raised without ,bodies1 or appear without ,bodies1 but altogether to the contrary4 ,and as for that saying of ,peter1 ,by which also he went and preached unto the ,spirits in ,prison1 which sometime were disobedient1 when once the ,long-suffering of ,god waited in the ,days of ,noah while the ,ark was a preparing4 ,these ,words do seem to carry some shew1 as if the quickening ,spirit of ,christ1 after he was risen from the ,dead1 or in the time he did lie in the ,grave1 as if his ,spirit in that ,interim of ,time went into some local ,place where ,spirits were in ,prison without ,bodies1 to preach unto them1 who had been ,disobedient in the ,days of ,noah3 ,this is the vain ,conceit of most ,people from those ,words of ,peter1 who saith1 ,by which he went and preached unto the ,spirits in ,prison1 as if the ,spirits of the ,disobedient ,people in the ,days of ,noah had been in ,prison in some local ,place in the ,earth without ,bodies1 who had been departed in the ,days of ,noah1 in the ,destruction of the ,world by ,water4 ,this the ,imagination of ,reason in ,man doth imagine1 that ,spirits may be shut up in ,prison without ,bodies1 and that the quickening ,spirit ,christ might ,preach unto them without a ,body4 ,but the true ,light and ,revelation of faith doth know to the contrary1 that no ,spirits can have any ,being at all without ,bodies1 neither of ,god1 ,angels1 nor ,man1 nor no other living ,creature1 who hath the ,breath of ,life in it4 ,but to give the ,interpretation of this ,scripture1 that the ,reader may understand1 it is thus2 the ,spirit of ,christ1 that quickened from the ,dead to ,life again1 ,i say1 is the same ,spirit that preached to the ,spirits in ,prison in the ,days of ,noah1 and the ,spirits of the disobedient ,world were in ,prison in their own ,bodies in the ,days of ,noah1 as they were when ,christ came upon ,earth1 for then he opened the ,prison to them that were bound1 by preaching ,glad-tidings of ,freedom to those that were bound1 and ,liberty to those ,spirits that were in ,captivity4 ,now 7as ,i said before7 this ,captivity is ,spiritual ,captivity1 and to be bound and in ,prison1 it is meant a ,spiritual ,imprisonment in the ,mind1 and not a natural ,imprisonment of the ,body4 ,and this ,i say1 the very same ,spirit of ,christ that preached to the ,jews when he was upon ,earth1 did preach to the old ,world in the ,days of ,noah1 though in a twofold ,manner4 ,and as the ,spirits of ,men were in ,prison in their own ,ignorance1 ,blindness and ,darkness of ,understandings1 in that they were led ,captives and ,prisoners by their wicked and unnatural ,lusts in the ,days of ,noah3 ,so were both ,jews and ,gentiles in the ,days of ,christ when on ,earth1 their ,spirits were led ,captive1 and into the ,prison of ,unbelief and ,persecution of the ,lord of ,life1 in that their ,fathers persecuted the ,lord's ,prophets and ,messengers he did send2 so did these ,jews persecute the ,lord himself1 when he preached to their ,spirits that were in ,prison1 and led ,captives by their wicked murdering ,wills into the ,prison of ,unbelief2 for he did preach when on ,earth1 that whosoever did believe in him should be saved4 ,and as many as did truly believe in him1 their ,spirits were brought out of that ,captivity of ,unbelief1 and out of the ,prison of ,darkness in the ,mind1 into a glorious ,liberty and ,light of ,life ,eternal4 ,and thus did the preaching of ,christ ,spirit deliver many ,spirits of ,men and ,women out of ,prison1 in the ,days when he was upon ,earth4 ,so likewise this quickening ,spirit of ,christ1 it preached unto the ,spirits in ,prison in the ,days of ,noah4 ,and why were their ,spirits in ,prison in the ,days of ,noah8 ,because they were disobedient4 ,and how may they be said to be disobedient8 ,because they did not believe that good ,man ,noah1 who was a ,preacher of ,righteousness4 ,and how did he preach ,righteousness unto that wicked ,people8 ,in that he prepared the ,ark1 and being so many as a hundred ,years in building1 all that while ,god is said to wait for their ,repentance1 and that they might believe that ,god would destroy the ,world by ,water4 ,but instead of ,repentance and believing they hardened their ,hearts1 and mocked at ,noah and the ,ark2 so that while the ,ark was preparing1 ,god waited for the ,people's ,repentance2 and all that while that ,noah was building he preached to the ,people1 that the ,world would be drowned4 ,and the ,spirit of ,christ1 which is the ,spirit of ,god which was put to ,death in the ,flesh1 but quickened by the ,spirit1 by which he went and preached unto the ,spirits in ,prison in the ,days of ,noah1 it was the same ,spirit that instructed ,noah to build the ,ark2 so that the building of the ,ark by ,noah1 he being a ,preacher of ,righteousness1 in that he believed ,god1 and built it as the ,spirit of ,god had commanded and instructed him2 as ,god did ,moses1 shewed him the ,pattern of the ,tabernacle in the ,mount4 ,and in as much as ,noah did obey the ,commandment of the ,lord1 according as the ,spirit of the ,lord did reveal unto him1 ,noah may be said to be a ,preacher of ,righteousness2 and he doing all things by ,inspiration of the ,spirit of ,christ1 which was not at that time made of ,flesh1 but in the ,fulness of time became pure humane ,flesh1 and suffered the ,pains of ,death4 ,and the same ,spirit that suffered ,death1 that very same ,spirit that quickened1 was that ,spirit that preached to the ,spirits in ,prison in the ,days of ,noah1 as aforesaid4 ,and the making of the ,ark by the ,inspiration of ,god's ,spirit in the ,sight of the ,people1 who were in ,prison in ,ignorance and ,darkness of ,mind1 is called by the ,revelation of ,faith1 ,a preaching to the ,spirits in ,prison3 ,so that the ,spirit of ,god in ,noah may be said to preach unto those ,spirits in ,prison1 in the ,days of ,noah1 and that there was but eight ,persons saved from the ,flood4 ,so that this ,place of ,scripture doth no way prove1 that the ,spirit of ,christ did ever preach to ,spirits in ,prison without ,bodies2 neither did ,christ's ,spirit preach in the ,days of ,noah without a ,body2 for he always preached with a ,body himself1 or else chose ,men that have ,bodies1 and gave them ,power to preach to ,spirits in ,prison1 and to deliver the ,captives1 and to set the ,prisoner at ,liberty1 and the bound in ,prison to go free4 ,so that the ,reader may see how and in what ,manner the ,spirit of ,christ did preach unto the ,spirits in ,prison in the ,days of ,noah1 and how their ,spirits may be said to be in ,prison1 and how their ,unbelief in the ,days of ,noah was called ,disobedience1 to the preaching of ,noah all that while the ,ark was building4 ,and being built by the ,inspiration of the ,spirit of ,god1 it may and is called the preaching of ,christ's ,spirit to them that were in ,prison in ,spiritual ,darkness in their ,minds2 for their ,minds being darkened1 they did those ,things that were unseemly2 yea1 unnatural as the ,people of ,sodom did4 ,now1 were not the ,spirits of these ,people in ,prison1 and led ,captive of those unnatural ,lusts1 ,i think no sober ,man will deny2 yet these were those ,spirits in ,prison that ,christ's ,spirit preach unto in the ,body of ,noah1 in the ,days of ,noah2 and that there was but eight ,persons in the ,days of ,noah1 that were saved from the ,destruction by ,water1 by the preaching of that ,spirit of ,god in ,noah4 ,this is the true ,interpretation and ,meaning of those ,words of ,peter the ,apostle aforementioned2 and how the ,spirit of ,christ went and preached unto the ,spirits in ,prison in the ,days of ,noah4 ,,chap4 ,,xiv4 ,again1 there are some other ,places of ,scripture1 which several ,people have objected1 as if the ,spirit or ,soul of ,man might go out of the ,body1 and subsist in ,bliss and ,happiness1 or in ,misery and a tormented ,condition1 without its ,body it always lived in2 from that ,place ,luke xxiii4 #dc4 ,jesus said to the ,thief on the ,cross1 ,verily ,i say unto thee1 ,this ,day shalt thou be with me in ,paradise4 ,now observe1 this no way proves that the ,thief's ,soul went out of his ,body into a paradisiacal ,place1 and so escaped suffering ,death1 or did not die2 for if the ,soul of ,christ did die at that time1 as is clear by ,scripture it did2 then the ,soul and ,life of the ,thief did die also4 ,then where was the ,paradise the ,thief's ,soul1 and ,christ's ,soul that was heavy unto ,death1 where did they go8 ,to this1 ,i say1 they went to a ,place of rest1 where all righteous ,souls go1 which is to the sleep of ,death1 for their was nothing did die but the ,souls of them both2 and the ,paradise ,christ and the ,thief went into that ,day they suffered ,death1 ,i declare it was this1 that ,christ was sure in himself that he should rise from the ,dead the third ,day1 and afterward should enter into eternal ,glory1 and this ,assurance in ,christ that he should rise again the third ,day1 it was ,paradise and ,peace to his ,soul1 that he should pass through that ,death1 he was now to suffer that very ,day into a new ,life1 that should not be capable to die any more4 ,so likewise when the ,thief did truly believe that ,jesus was the ,christ1 the ,saviour from eternal ,death to those that did believe2 as it is certain he did when he said1 ,lord1 remember me1 when thou comest into thy ,kingdom2 for he did really believe1 that ,christ would rise the third ,day1 and that he would raise him to eternal ,joy and ,happiness at the last ,day2 and the ,thief dying in this ,faith1 he entred into ,peace of ,mind1 and had ,rest and ,freedom to die1 in ,hope and full ,assurance that ,christ would raise him up ,soul and ,body to eternal ,happiness at the last ,day4 ,and this was that ,paradise that ,christ and the ,thief were in1 that very ,day they both suffered ,death2 for the ,assurance of everlasting ,life in a ,man's self here in ,mortality1 is the ,paradise of ,peace in this ,life4 ,this ,i know to be true1 and this was the ,paradise ,christ did mean the ,thief should be in that very ,day he believed2 and not that either of their ,souls went out of their ,bodies to any other ,place or ,paradise1 then what was in their own ,bodies1 as aforesaid4 ,in like ,manner ,people imagine1 that the ,soul of ,man goeth out of the ,body at his ,death1 from that ,saying ,acts #g4 #ei4 from those ,words of ,stephen1 when he was stoned to ,death1 he said1 ,lord ,jesus1 receive my ,spirit4 ,the ,meaning is this1 that when any ,man died in the true ,faith of ,christ1 in the ,hope and full ,assurance that ,christ will raise him up to eternal ,happiness at the last ,day1 he commits his ,spirit into the ,hands of ,christ1 knowing that though he doth lose his ,life for ,christ's ,sake here1 that ,christ will raise it again1 and save his ,soul hereafter2 and so ,christ may be said to receive his ,spirit4 ,for this ,i must tell the ,reader1 that there is not a quarter of an ,hour's time to the ,dead to his rising again1 no not a ,minute2 for there is no time to the ,dead1 not a ,minute of an ,hour1 though a ,man have been dead five thousand ,years1 yet it is not a ,minute of an ,hour to him that is dead4 ,for all time belongs to the living2 for after ,death there is nothing but ,eternity1 on the other side of ,death either eternal ,happiness or eternal ,misery3 ,so that when ,men die1 they may be said to go immediately to ,heaven or to ,hell1 to ,joy or ,torment1 to be receiv'd into ,christ's ,hands of ,mercy1 or into the ,hands of ,christ's ,wrath1 where they shall be tormented with the ,devil and his ,angels1 yet shall never see the ,devil1 nor his ,angels1 nor themselves1 to ,eternity2 as they did not know the ,devil here1 neither shall they know or see him hereafter1 yet be tormented with him4 ,and in this ,sense a faithful ,spirit or ,soul1 as ,stephen was1 may be said to commit his ,spirit into the ,hands of ,christ1 and that ,christ doth receive his ,spirit into his ,hands1 and will raise it up at the last ,day1 which will not be a ,minute of an ,hour's time to the ,dead1 as ,i said before2 therefore let not the ,seed of ,faith think the time long between ,death and the ,salvation of their ,souls1 because so many of the ,faithful have been so many hundred ,years in the ,grave3 ,and let not the wicked unbelieving ,people comfort themselves1 that the ,dead shall never rise again1 because the ,fathers are ,dead1 and the ,prophets are dead1 and we see none of them rise again2 therefore we conclude1 their ,spirits are gone to ,heaven without ,bodies1 and the ,spirits of the ,wicked are gone to ,hell without ,bodies1 but a ,minute of an ,hour's time will decide this ,matter1 when the dead are raised3 ,for they shall not remember they have been a ,sleep in the ,dust one ,minute of an ,hour1 for their is no ,remembrance of time in the ,grave4 ,therefore let that vain ,conceit that is in most ,people fall1 of ,spirits going to ,god without ,bodies3 ,for ,i can assure you there is no such ,thing1 neither can there be any true ,peace in that ,conceit4 ,i know it by ,faith now1 and by ,experience1 for ,i was of that ,opinion once my self1 when ,i was zealous in ,religion according to the ,puritan ,way2 but ,i knew no ,scripture truly1 neither was there one true ,interpreter of ,scripture1 no not one in those ,days1 that could shew a ,man the true ,righteousness of ,god1 or the true ,way to everlasting ,life4 ,,chap4 ,,xv4 ,there is another ,place of ,scripture that is objected1 that seems as if the ,soul went out of the ,body when they die2 as in #a ,kings xvii4 #ba4 where ,elijah prayed1 that the ,child's ,soul might come into him again4 ,the ,meaning is this1 that ,elijah did pray in ,faith unto ,god1 that he would assist him in this or other ,things2 as in shutting up the ,heavens that it should not rain1 and calling for ,fire from ,heaven to destroy those two ,captains and their ,fifties1 and many other wonderful ,things he did2 so he prayed unto ,god to strengthen his ,faith1 so that he might have ,power to raise this ,child's ,life out of ,death again4 ,therefore he stretched himself upon the ,child1 and prayed that the ,child's ,soul might come into him again2 that is1 that the ,child's ,soul or ,life might quicken in the ,body of the ,child again2 for ,elijah knew the ,soul of the ,child was dead1 and by the warm ,flesh of the ,prophet laid upon the ,child's dead ,flesh1 and the ,faith and ,prayer of the ,prophet together1 it begot ,life in the ,child again2 so that the ,soul that was dead it became ,life in the ,child again2 and that ,life that was quickened1 it run through the ,veins of the ,childs ,body1 and so the ,child's ,soul did come into him again4 ,for this ,i say1 if the ,soul of the ,child had been gone out of the ,body1 then ,elijah did not raise the dead ,child to ,life again2 for how can a ,man be said to be dead1 when as ,life doth not die1 but slips out of the ,body1 as most ,people do vainly imagine2 but it may be clear to those whose ,understandings are enlightened1 that ,elijah did raise the ,child from ,death to ,life1 and that the ,child's ,soul was dead in its ,body1 and that the ,soul of the ,child was revived in the ,child's ,body again by the ,power of ,faith in ,elijah4 ,and the very same thing was done by the ,prophet ,elisha1 as in #b ,kings iv4 #cd4 the ,prophet ,elisha did the same thing to the ,sunamite ,woman's ,son1 he went up1 and lay upon the ,child1 and put his ,mouth upon his ,mouth1 and his ,eyes upon his ,eyes1 and his ,hands upon his ,hands1 and he stretch himself upon the ,child2 and the ,flesh of the ,child waxed warm1 and ,elisha stretched himself upon the ,child a second time3 ,here the ,reader may see1 that the ,child was dead1 and by the ,faith and ,prayer1 and by the ,warmness of the ,prophet ,elisha his ,flesh1 the ,child revived to ,life again both ,body and ,soul4 ,and ,elisha did use the same ,means and ,way as ,elijah did8 for he went in and shut the ,door1 and prayed unto the ,lord as ,elijah did1 and stretched himself upon the ,child as ,elijah did1 and raise the ,child to ,life again by the ,power of ,faith4 ,yet ,elisha maketh no mention of the ,soul coming into the ,child again1 but he delivered the ,body and ,soul of the ,child1 that were both dead together1 he delivered them both alive together to the ,child's ,mother4 ,it was the same thing done by ,elijah1 only some difference in the ,words1 but the ,sense and ,meaning is all one4 ,so that the ,reader may understand1 if any true ,light of ,life be in him1 that the ,soul of the ,child went not out of its ,body1 but died in the ,body2 and by the ,power of ,faith in the ,prophet1 it quickened alive out of ,death in the ,child's ,body again2 for the ,soul or ,life of the ,child never went out of the ,body as is vainly imagin'd2 but the ,soul1 ,life1 and ,spirit of the ,child was absolutely dead in the ,body1 and by the ,power of ,faith in the ,prophet1 the dead ,soul or ,life of the ,child was quickened alive again1 and caused the ,body to live also4 ,for if the ,woman should have had the ,soul of the ,child given unto her without the ,body1 she would have given the ,prophet no ,thanks for raising her ,child's ,soul without a ,body2 but the ,body and ,soul being one ,person1 they were both dead together1 and the ,prophet raised them both together alive1 and the ,woman received them both together1 and rejoyced greatly in ,god1 and gave ,honour to the ,prophet4 ,thus in short1 ,i have given the true ,interpretation of all those ,scriptures that most seem1 or most commonly are objected against the ,mortality of the ,soul1 or to prove that ,spirits do go out of the ,body at the time of ,death1 or that ,spirits may be raised without ,bodies1 or have any ,being without ,bodies1 or that a ,spirit may appear in a ,shape without a ,body1 or that a ,spirit can assume what ,shape it please1 yet have no ,body or ,substance4 ,these things the vain ,imagination of ,reason in ,man hath created in it self1 to fright it self with1 for their is no such thing as ,spirits walking without ,bodies1 neither doth any ,spirit go out of the ,body when ,men die1 as is imagined by most ,people2 but these are ,fictions of ,mens ,brains1 created by the ,imagination in the dark ,minds of ,men and ,women1 for ,god never created any such thing1 as ,i have shewed before4 ,and as for that saying of ,solomon1 ,eccl4 xii4 #g4 ,then shall the ,dust return to the ,earth as it was1 and the ,spirit shall return to ,god who gave it4 ,his ,meaning 7,i suppose7 in these ,words is1 as is generally conceived by all ,people1 the ,body to the ,dust1 and the ,spirit returns to ,god that gave it when ,men die3 ,but these ,sayings of ,solomon are no ,scripture1 for ,solomon was no ,scripture ,writer1 for his ,writings were not written by the ,revelation of ,faith1 but by the ,revelation of ,reason2 yet it was the purest of ,reason1 and he had the greatest ,measure of the ,wisdom of ,reason1 and the ,knowledge of ,nature1 of any that was before him since ,adam1 or any that shall come after him4 ,therefore ,god chose him ,king1 and gave him the purest ,wisdom of ,reason1 according to his ,desire in his ,prayer to ,god1 that his ,wisdom might resemble ,heaven for ,glory1 as it did2 for what ,glory could a ,king have upon ,earth greater than he had8 ,which was a true ,resemblance of the ,glory of ,heaven2 and this ,glory was procured by that ,power and great ,wisdom of ,reason in him2 yet for all this he was ignorant of the ,revelation of ,faith1 and of spiritual and heavenly ,things1 ignorant of the true ,god1 and of the right ,devil1 and of some things in ,nature4 ,as that the ,spirit of a ,man should return to ,god that gave it without a ,body2 when as ,god never gave any ,spirit to ,man without a ,body1 nor to no other ,creature3 ,but ,solomon being ignorant1 that the ,spirit or ,soul of ,man is generated and begotten by the ,law of ,generation as well as the ,body2 this was in the ,creation when ,god made ,man in his own ,image1 the ,ignorance of this caused him to speak thus2 for he knew not where the ,spirit went when the ,body is laid in the ,earth1 no more than the learned ,philosophers do1 who say1 ,a ,spirit cannot die2 as if the ,spirit and ,life of every ,creature were the ,spirit or ,life of ,god1 else they think no ,creature could move and have a ,being4 ,and though ,solomon was a wise ,man1 as the ,heathen ,philosophers were wise ,men in ,nature2 yet they were all ignorant in this one thing1 of the ,law of ,generation or ,procreation1 to increase and multiply1 as ,god hath placed in ,nature1 when he created the ,world in the beginning2 for every ,creature as well as ,man1 were to increase and multiply by the ,law of ,generation2 and this ,i am sure1 they begot ,spirit1 ,life1 and ,soul by ,generation1 as well as ,bodies4 ,but if it be objected1 that ,god breathed into ,man the ,breath of ,life1 and he became a living ,soul2 and so ,man's ,spirit is of a more noble divine ,life or ,spirit than any other ,creature4 ,to this ,i say1 the ,law of ,generation to increase and multiply1 was placed in ,man's ,seed and ,nature by ,god the ,creator1 as in other ,creatures3 ,for this is to be observed1 that ,adam did not come to be a living ,soul by ,generation1 as we do ever since2 but he and ,eve were first made as a ,foundation for ,generation2 so that ,god made or created but one ,man and one ,woman1 all ,men and ,women that have been generated and begotten ever since1 cannot properly be said to be made nor created1 but begotten by ,generation2 for ,god never made and created but one ,man and one ,woman1 all others are generated and begotten4 ,therefore when ,man begets a ,son or ,daughter in the way of ,generation1 he begets the ,soul or ,spirit of the ,child as well as the ,body2 and the ,soul or ,spirit came out of the ,man's ,loin well as the ,body3 ,as it was said by ,jacob1 ,seventy ,souls came out of his ,loins2 if so then that ,spirit or ,soul that is begotten by ,generation1 it must and doth die3 ,for this ,i say1 ,god never breathed the ,breath of ,life into no ,man1 but into ,adam3 ,the ,spirit of ,life in all ,men and ,women else or since have been generated and begotten1 and what ,spirit and ,soul of ,man that is generated1 it doth die and turn to ,dust1 till the ,regeneration1 when ,god shall raise it again1 which will not be a ,minute of an ,hour to the dead ,spirit1 as ,i said before4 ,so it may be clear to those that have the true ,light of ,faith in them1 that the ,soul or ,spirit of ,man doth die as well as the ,body3 ,they both came into the ,world together alive1 and they shall both go out of the ,world again dead1 as ,i have shewed before4 ,also the ,reader may see1 that those ,scriptures have been misunderstood through the ,ignorance and ,darkness of ,mens ,minds1 to think that the ,soul or ,spirit of ,man doth not die1 but slips out of the ,body2 but to imagine that ,spirits may walk without ,bodies1 or that any ,witch can raise any ,spirit without a ,body2 and many other ,conceits that do arise out of the dark ,mind of ,man2 which have been grounded upon those ,scripture ,words2 therefore ,i have given the ,interpretation of all those ,places of ,scripture that are of most ,concernment1 and seem to bear such a ,sense1 as is generally conceived among ,professors of the ,scriptures3 ,so that whoever understands the ,interpretation1 may receive great ,satisfaction in their ,minds in this ,point2 so much for ,satisfaction of the ,understanding in ,heart1 and for the ,discontent of the ,ignorant and ,dark-minded ,people1 who believe by ,tradition that their ,spirits do not die1 but slide out of the ,body at the time of ,death2 and if they have been evil and wicked ,livers1 their ,spirits do walk afterwards1 and cannot be at rest4 ,these ,conceits have been exceeding brief in the ,world heretofore1 when ,people were in ,darkness1 and so is still where the ,darkness of ,mind ruleth4 ,,chap4 ,,xvi4 ,there is one thing more that would be necessary for the wise in ,heart to know1 which the ,scriptures speak of in several ,places2 but ,i never heard any of the ,ministry tell what that ,satan is the ,scriptures speak of1 therefore ,i shall speak a ,word or two to shew what ,satan is1 and so conclude4 #a ,chron4 xxi4 #a4 ,and ,satan stood up against ,israel2 and ,job i4 #f4 ,and ,satan came also among them2 and ,chap4 xxi4 #bb4 ,and the ,lord said to ,sathan1 ,from whence comest thou8 ,and ,god said to ,satan1 ,hast thou considered my ,servant ,job8 ,ezek4 iii4 #a4 ,and ,satan standing at his right ,hand4 ,mat4 xvi4 #bc4 ,get the behind me1 ,satan4 ,luke x4 #ah4 ,i beheld ,satan as ,lightning fall from ,heaven4 #a ,chron4 xxi4 #a4 ,and ,satan stood up against ,israel1 and provoked ,david to number ,israel4 ,this ,satan that provoked ,david1 it was the ,motions of ,reason in himself1 being lifted up in his own ,mind1 in that he had overcome the ,children of ,ammon1 he thought to make nothing of the ,philistines2 therefore the ,thoughts of his ,heart moved him to number the ,people1 to know his ,strength4 ,and this ,motion that did arise in his ,heart1 it was ,satan1 it is called ,satan1 because those ,motions proceed from the ,spirit or ,seed of ,reason in him4 ,in #b ,sam4 xxiv4 #a4 it is said1 ,the ,anger of the ,lord was kindled against ,israel1 and he moved ,david against them to say1 ,go1 number ,israel3 that is1 the ,lord suffered the ,motions of ,reason in ,david to be powerful and strong in him1 that no ,arguments should disswade him from it1 but the ,people must be numbred2 and this was that ,satan in ,david1 and no ,spirit without him4 ,so ,job i4 #f4 ,the ,sons of ,god came to present themselves before the ,lord1 and ,satan came also among them4 ,to this ,i say1 the ,book of ,job is no ,scripture1 neither are ,men to build their ,faith upon it1 because the ,book of ,job was written before ,moses1 therefore no ,scripture2 for ,moses his ,writing is the first ,foundation of ,scripture4 ,yet this ,i do confess1 that ,job was a good and faithful ,man2 and because he was afflicted by ,satan1 and ,satan is spoken of in several ,places of ,scripture1 yet none of them did declare what this ,satan is1 therefore ,i shall declare now what that ,satan was1 that came among the ,sons of ,god4 ,i declare1 the ,sons of ,god they were the ,sons of ,job1 who feasted their three ,sisters1 as you may read4 ,they were called the ,sons of ,god1 because they were that good and faithful ,man ,job's ,sons2 as the ,sons of ,seth were called the ,sons of ,god1 and they looked upon the ,daughters of ,men1 and saw that they were fair1 c4 as you may read in ,genesis4 ,now that ,satan came amongst them when they presented themselves before the ,lord1 it was the ,spirit of ,reason in ,job's seven ,sons1 when they feasted their three ,sisters1 they were moved in their ,minds to ,voluptuousness1 ,drunkenness and ,lust1 as the rest of the ,heathen were where they lived2 so that they did ,wickedness in the ,absence of ,job their ,father3 ,and ,job fearing in their ,wickedness his ,sons had cursed ,god in their ,hearts1 as you may see in the ,verse before4 ,so ,job caused his ,sons to present themselves before the ,lord1 and to worship the ,lord1 as it was the ,manner for ,job to do in those times1 and ,satan came with them1 that is1 the ,spirit of ,reason in his ,sons came with them1 reasoning in themselves2 why should their ,father ,job reprove them for their ,wickedness in their ,feasts2 this was that ,satan that came amongst them1 for he was in them1 and no other ,satan but what was within them4 ,and this is that ,satan that goeth to and fro in the ,earth1 to tempt and destroy those that are faithful3 ,so that this ,spirit of ,reason1 this ,satan1 it goeth to and fro in the ,earth1 to tempt and destroy the faithful4 ,it was that ,satan that did motion the ,sabeans and ,chaldaeans to take away ,job's ,oxen1 and slay his servants as they were plowing2 and fired the ,sheep1 and burnt up ,job's ,servants2 and the ,chaldaeans came with a ,band of ,men1 seeing ,job smitten and destroyed by the ,sabeans2 and they came with three ,bands of ,men1 and destroyed the ,camels and the rest of his ,servants4 ,for this must be minded1 that in those ,times there was no ,law to deliver or help the ,innocent1 but he that had the strongest ,sword carried the ,day4 ,and the ,lord for ,trial of ,job's ,faith and ,patience1 and for a ,pattern for the ,ages to come1 he suffered the ,spirit of unclean ,reason in the ,sabeans and ,chaldaeans to go to and fro in the ,earth1 to stir up their ,people to destroy ,job and all his ,house and ,cattle4 ,also ,god suffered the natural ,wind to blow down the ,house where ,job's ,sons were feasting1 and destroyed them according to the ,desire of the ,spirit of unclean ,reason in the ,sabeans and ,chaldaeans4 ,for the ,sons of ,job were wicked ,children1 though called the ,sons of ,god4 ,and last of all the ,spirit of unclean ,reason in ,job's ,wife was that ,satan that tempted ,job to curse ,god and die3 ,so that there is no other ,spirit or ,satan without ,man3 ,but that ,satan spoken of in ,job1 it was the ,spirit of unclean ,reason in the ,minds of the ,sabeans1 ,chaldaeans1 and in ,job's ,wife and ,sons2 that was the ,satan1 and no other4 ,and as for those ,disputes2 ,god had with ,satan1 and ,satan with ,god2 it was nothing else but the ,motions of ,job's ,heart passing through his troubled ,soul1 the ,seed of ,faith disputed in him for ,god1 persuading him to be patient1 and let that have its perfect ,work1 and so ,hope did increase in him2 and the ,seed of ,reason1 which was ,satan in him as well as in others1 it pleaded against ,god1 ,reasoning in him as if ,god did not do well or justly by him1 that had been so righteous in his ,life1 one who never did no ,wrong to his ,neighbour1 but always feared ,god2 yet that ,god should suffer the wicked to destroy his ,cattle and ,servants1 and suffer the ,wind to blow down his ,house1 and destroy his ,children2 and not only so1 but suffer his ,body to break out with ,boils and ,botches most loathsome1 as if he had been the greatest ,sinner in the ,world2 so that he thought that ,god dealt more cruelly with him then with any other ,creature4 ,and further1 he thought ,god dealt hardly with him1 that he would neither take away his ,life1 that he might die out of this troubled ,mind and ,pains of ,body1 nor restore him to ,health4 ,these and such like ,reasonings and thoughts passed through ,job's troubled ,soul even from the ,spirit or ,seed of ,reason in him1 which is the ,dispute of ,satan3 ,for as the ,seed of ,faith in ,job disputed for ,god so did the ,seed of ,reason in ,job dispute for ,satan2 for there is no other ,satan but what is in ,man1 as ,i said before4 ,so in ,zach4 iii4 #a4 here ,zachariah the ,prophet saw in a ,vision the ,redemption of the ,seed of ,faith by ,christ under the ,type of ,joshua the ,high-,priest1 standing before the ,angel of the ,lord1 and ,satan standing at his right hand to resist him4 ,this ,high-,priest was ,christ clothed with filthy ,garments1 when he became ,flesh1 when on ,earth he appeared unto ,men1 to be clothed in filthy ,garments1 being so mean1 and had not a ,place to lay his ,head yet professed himself to be the ,son of ,god1 the ,high-,priest that should offer up himself for to save his ,people2 for ,high-,priests in former ,times did appear to the ,people with rich and glorious ,garments2 but this ,high-,priest doth appear to the ,seed of ,reason1 to be clothed in filthy ,garments1 not fit 7as ,reason thinks7 to stand before the ,angel of the ,lord4 ,and this ,satan that stands as his right ,hand to resist him1 it was the ,spirit of unclean ,reason in those ,people of the ,jews when ,christ was upon ,earth1 and when that ,devil that tempted ,christ1 spoken of in ,matthew1 disputed with ,christ1 he resisted the ,high-,priest1 and stood at ,christ's right ,hand at that time2 and this ,devil that tempted ,christ1 it was a ,man endued with an high ,pitch of ,reason1 and that ,spirit of ,reason1 or ,wisdom of ,reason1 in that ,man that tempted ,christ the ,high-,priest1 it was ,satan that strove to resist ,christ in dispute1 whereupon ,christ said1 ,get thee hence ,satan4 ,this ,satan was a ,man1 and the ,spirit of ,reason in this ,man is that ,satan that always resisteth the ,wisdom of ,faith1 which is the ,wisdom of ,god4 ,but this hath been more largely treated upon in our other ,writings1 so ,i shall speak no more of that ,devil and his ,temptations here4 ,so in ,matth4 xvi4 #bc4 ,christ said unto ,peter1 ,get thee behind me ,satan4 ,here you see ,peter is called ,satan1 because it was the ,spirit of ,reason in ,peter that said1 ,master1 pity thy self3 ,that is1 the ,thoughts of ,peter's ,heart they did savour of the fleshly part1 that is1 those ,motions to persuade ,christ to save himself from ,death1 they did arise from the ,seed of ,reason in ,peter1 therefore called ,satan2 for there was no new ,spirit that came into ,peter at that time to cause him to speak those ,words1 but those ,words proceeded from the ,seed of ,reason in him1 as aforesaid1 therefore called ,satan4 ,and wheresoever that ,expression is used1 as ,peter said himself in the ,acts1 ,why hath ,satan filled thine ,heart to lie unto the ,holy ,ghost8 that is1 why hath the ,motions of ,reason in thee persuaded thy ,heart to tell a ,lie unto us1 that have the ,holy ,ghost in us8 ,so the ,reader may clearly see1 there is no other ,satan to tempt ,god or ,man1 but the ,motions and ,words that proceed from the ,seed of ,reason in ,man and ,woman4 ,so in ,luke x4 #ah4 ,and ,christ said unto his ,disciples1 ,i beheld ,satan as ,lightning fall from ,heaven4 ,this ,christ spake1 because his ,disciples rejoyced that the ,devils were subject to them4 ,the ,meaning of ,christ was1 that he saw the ,spirit of ,reason1 that was in the ,rulers of the ,jews1 very high in the ,righteousness of the ,law of ,moses1 even as if they were in ,heaven1 thinking in themselves that none could be more happy and surer of ,heaven and ,peace with ,god1 then they that kept to the ,law of ,moses4 ,now ,christ knowing that this ,righteousness of the ,jews1 should be thrown down by the ,righteousness of ,faith1 which his ,apostles should preach1 therefore he saw by ,faith that the ,spirit of ,reason in the ,rulers of the ,jews should fall like ,lightning from ,heaven2 and so it did1 and the ,disciples of ,christ should1 by the ,doctrine and ,righteousness of ,faith1 tread upon ,serpents1 and upon their ,persecution1 and upon their ,righteousness of the ,law of ,moses1 and upon all that which did fall like ,lightning from ,heaven2 they should tread upon ,satan1 that is1 upon the very ,wisdom of ,reason the ,devil4 ,this is the true meaning of ,christ1 when he beheld ,satan fall from ,heaven like ,lightning1 and what ,satan is so much spoken of in ,scripture4 ,much more might be said to enlarge this ,point1 but ,i have spoken more already then ,i did intend2 but ,i suppose there is enough written here in short to satisfy those1 that can understand by a little what a great deal ,means4 ,and also ,people may know when they speak of ,satan what ,satan is1 and when they speak of the ,devil1 they may know what the ,devil is4 ,so much concerning the ,interpretation of ,satan1 and the ,conclusion of this ,epistle1 written by ,lodowicke ,muggleton4 ,a ,copy of a ,letter written by the ,prophet ,lodowicks ,muggleton1 to ,mr4 ,edward ,fewterrill of ,chesterfield1 bearing ,date from ,london ,march #bi4 #affj4 ,friend1 ,i ,received your ,letter1 wherein ,i perceive you are a ,man that hath been led through several ,opinions1 yet not suffered to joyn with any1 but have been made to wait upon ,jesus ,christ the only ,god for ,satisfaction2 and now it hath been his great ,love1 which he hath loved you1 to let you have a ,sight of those infinite ,truths1 written by the ,hands of his two ,witnesses1 and ,lawrence ,claxton2 which ,writing of ours1 ,i perceive by your ,letter1 have given you more ,satisfaction than any that ever you read before4 ,only this ,i perceive1 that you did and do still much approve of ,jacob ,bemon's ,works2 and for this ,cause1 because you were as ,i perceive by his ,writings1 exhorted to resign your ,will unto ,god's ,will1 and to come unto that happy ,state1 neither to ,will or ,desire any thing1 but to abide in the ,will of ,god1 which is ,jesus ,christ1 into which ,estate the ,lord did twice bring you in some ,measure4 ,also you say1 ,that it is a hard thing to cast out that ,devil that is in us1 nor can it be done as we say or think1 but by that ,resignation and ,faith in the true ,god4 ,likewise you say1 that you were a great ,disputant against all ,forms and formal ,worship1 till the ,lord silenced you1 and did let you see it was but a vain ,thing to wrangle and jangle with the ,devil more4 ,but ,i shall pass by part of your ,letter1 and ,i shall answer you to those things that are of most ,concernment4 ,you say1 that there was that ,portion of ,scripture brought into your ,remembrance of his ,promise1 ,i will send the ,spirit of ,truth1 which shall guide you into all ,truth1 and there have you had your rest reposed4 ,in the last ,place ,i find1 that you would have some ,answer to some ,doubts1 concerning that ,devil that doth appear to ,witches1 and suck of their ,bodies1 and what that is that doth appear to ,conjurers1 and the ,authors of lying ,wonders of ,john ,robins2 though you do believe there is no ,devil but ,man1 you do believe also that the ,soul of ,man is mortal1 and must needs die1 and so cannot appear1 though you thought otherwise in your ,reason4 ,you say1 ,whether is there a ,spirit in ,man that surviveth and is allured by them1 or do they stir up awaking the ,power of the first fallen ,angel through their devillish ,faith1 or is these ,things from their vain ,imaginations4 ,if so1 how8 if not1 what it is1 is your ,desire to know of me4 ,to which ,i shall give you some ,answer both to the first of ,part your ,letter1 and also to the latter ,part of it4 ,first you say1 that you have been made to wait upon ,jesus ,christ the only ,god2 for ,satisfaction thereof1 ,i would have you to consider1 how could you wait and be satisfied in the ,belief of such a ,god which you never knew4 ,for the ,letter of the ,scriptures did never declare to you1 that ,jesus ,christ was the only ,god1 neither did ,god commissionate no ,prophet nor ,apostle for to declare it1 though their ,declarations was as necessary to be believed in their ,time and ,place1 as this ,commission of the ,spirit2 which ,commission of the ,spirit hath deeper ,mysteries held forth in it1 than the other two ,commissions had3 ,for ,god never did give to any ,prophets or ,apostles1 the ,knowledge of his own ,form or ,nature before he became ,flesh4 ,if they did know it1 they did not reveal it4 ,but he hath given it to his two last ,spiritual ,witnesses and ,prophets1 ,john ,reeve's and ,lodowicke ,muggleton1 who were those chosen ,witnesses of ,god1 which should have more ,understanding of the ,mind of ,god in the ,scriptures1 than all ,men in the ,world4 ,which ,knowledge of ,god's ,mind in the ,scriptures1 doth consist of these six ,heads4 ,first1 ,of the ,form and ,nature of ,god before he became ,flesh4 ,secondly1 ,of the ,form and ,nature of the ,devil before he became ,flesh4 ,thirdly1 ,of the ,place and ,nature of ,heaven4 ,fourthly1 ,of the ,place and ,nature of ,hell4 ,fifthly1 ,of the ,nature and ,persons of ,angels4 ,sixthly1 ,of the ,mortality of the ,soul4 ,upon the ,knowledge of these six ,principles1 depends the eternal ,happiness of many4 ,and the ,knowledge of the two ,seeds1 is those two ,keys that doth open those two1 namely1 the strait and narrow ,gate that leadeth unto ,life1 and the broad and wide ,gate that leadeth to ,destruction4 ,and those two ,keys are given unto us two aforesaid1 which hath the ,commission of the ,spirit given unto us4 ,so that there is no coming unto the ,knowledge of the true ,god1 nor the right ,devil1 but where the ,declaration of this ,spiritual ,commission doth open the ,doors or ,gates of ,mens ,hearts1 and lets them see what ,seed they are of1 and so ,men come to know the true ,god and the right ,devil4 ,and then a ,man may truly say1 that he can resign his ,will to ,god's ,will1 as you say ,jacob ,bemon in his ,writings doth declare4 ,yet this ,i would have you to know that ,jacob ,bemon had no ,personal ,god at all not to resign his ,will unto1 but his ,god was an ,infinite1 ,incomprehensible1 ,formless ,spirit1 as all the ,world hath4 ,neither had his ,devil a ,person nor ,form2 neither had his ,angels he speaketh so much of any ,body or ,form at all1 but they were all ,spirits without ,bodies1 which in the ,conclusion was no more but so many ,letters1 that is1 three ,letters1 ,g1 ,o1 ,d1 and so of the ,devil and ,angels4 ,and yet this ,man would resign his ,will into ,god's ,will1 and yet his ,god had no ,form nor ,nature at all2 therefore they could be no ,will in his ,god1 whereby any ,man should resign his ,will into ,god's ,will2 whereas there can be no ,will in ,god1 except he hath both ,form and ,nature4 ,and this is that ,will of ,god which you call ,jesus ,christ1 into which ,estate the ,lord did twice bring you1 which ,estate of yours in that ,faith of ,jacob ,bemon's1 could not be a true ,estate1 because there was not the ,knowledge of the true ,god2 and where there is not the ,knowledge of the true ,god1 there cannot be the ,knowledge of the right ,devil2 without the ,knowledge of these two1 there can be no true lasting ,peace in ,man4 ,and as for your being a great ,disputant amongst all formal ,worship1 ,i do not question the thing1 because ,i know that the ,wisdom of ,reason1 which is the ,devil1 doth love to be uppermost in ,disputes4 ,but how can you say1 that the ,lord did ,silence you1 and made you to see the ,vanity of all ,disputes2 whereas you did not know any other ,god1 but what is generally believed on in the ,world2 that is1 an ,infinite1 ,incomprehensible ,spirit1 not minding whether ,god had any ,nature or ,form at all4 ,therefore it could not be the true ,lord that did silence you1 but it was something that did arise out of your own ,seed1 which did shew you the ,vanity of all ,disputes4 ,in the next ,place you say1 that there was brought into your ,remembrance that ,portion of ,scripture concerning his ,promise1 that he would send his ,spirit of ,truth1 which should guide you into all ,truth1 and there have you had your rest reposed4 ,answer1 ,that this ,place of ,scripture did not belong unto you1 nor to any ,man in the ,world at this ,day2 for that ,promise was given only unto his ,disciples2 which ,disciples of his to whom those ,words were spoken1 were afterwards made ,apostles of ,christ2 so that the ,promise which ,christ did promise to his ,disciples before his ,death1 was that of the ,blood which was given unto his ,apostles1 which was called the ,spirit of ,truth1 because they should witness unto the ,truth2 that is1 unto his ,death and ,resurrection and ,ascension4 ,therefore take ,notice of this1 that that ,promise was fulfilled upon his ,apostles after he was ascended up to ,heaven1 as you may read in the second of the ,acts1 and to every ,man that doth read the ,promises1 which ,god did make to his ,commissionated ,apostles1 it doth not belong to every ,man that doth read them1 but every ,man is to mind that ,commission which he is under4 ,therefore for you to repose your ,trust upon such ,promises as was given to other ,men in their ,commissions1 that ,peace will not endure to the ,end1 but will vanish like ,smoke in the ,fire4 ,in the next ,place1 ,i shall give you some ,answers to those ,doubts1 which you spake of concerning that ,devil which doth appear to ,witches and ,conjurers1 and how those lying ,wonders were acted by ,john ,robins4 ,answer1 ,there is a twofold ,witchcraft1 the one is ,natural1 the other is ,spiritual4 ,now this natural ,witchcraft is acted by such as are called ,witches and ,conjurers4 ,now as for those ignorant ,women which are ,witches1 their ,witchcraft lies in their wicked ,nature1 by giving themselves up to believe1 that there is no ,god at all but ,nature only1 and so by that strong ,faith that they have in ,nature1 they have ,power over those whose ,understandings are of a lower ,capacity than themselves1 and so ,people being ignorant and fearful of them1 doth many times disturb and search their ,blood with ,extremity of ,fear1 which they have of one that is suspected for a ,witch1 and so by their own ,fear and ,imagination1 they come to be bewitched4 ,as a ,man being overcharged with extream ,grief1 or being prevented by one that he loves1 he goes ,distracted or runneth ,mad1 which is no other but his being bewitched4 ,and so it is with all those that are ignorant1 and over charged with ,fear3 and as for those ,children and ,cattle that are bewitched1 it is by some other ,sorcery which they do use with ,herbs and ,plants1 and some other things of ,nature1 they having some small ,knowledge of that ,sympathy1 and ,influence the ,stars have over those ,bodies and ,herbs1 and so mix their ,faith and ,experience together1 pretending to do all ,manner of ,good1 but intendeth nothing but ,evil4 ,so that there is no such thing as ,people do vainly imagine as for ,spirits to suck ,witches1 but all the ,devil that is1 is their own dark ,reason2 and that ,spirit that doth bewitch any ,creature1 it doth arise out of their own ,imagination3 ,and as for ,conjurers and ,magicians1 their ,reason is more enlightened than the others is1 because they do go altogether by the ,figure1 which is an ,art by which the ,reason of ,man hath produced ,characters and ,figures for the several ,stars and ,planets1 and so they came to imagine the ,influence of those ,stars and ,planets upon the ,bodies of ,men1 and many times they do hit rightly1 yet it is still but ,witchcraft4 ,for it is nothing else but the ,imagination of ,reason1 that doth pry into the ,secrets of ,nature4 ,and the first ,witchcraft that ever was1 it was produced by learning of ,numbers and ,figures2 ,i say1 it was first from the ,egyptians ,arts1 and from thence came ,conjuration1 and the ,knowledge of the ,influence of the ,stars and ,planets and the ,knowledge of ,physick1 which are no other in the ,original but ,witches1 only this their ,witchcraft is more tolerated by the ,power of the ,nations2 but ,i am confident that there is more ,people in the ,world bewitched with them1 than there is with the other ,sort of ,witches1 that is1 they are deceived both in ,body1 and in ,mind1 and ,estate4 ,for when a ,man is deceived in his ,expectations and ,faith which he had in that ,art1 he may very well be said to be bewitched3 ,but as for raising ,spirits without ,bodies1 there is no ,witch1 no ,conjurer1 or ,magician1 nor the greatest ,artist in the ,world can do2 neither can any ,spirit assume any ,body but its own4 ,so much for natural ,witches4 ,and for those lying ,signs and ,wonders which ,john ,robins did act1 it was by a more ,spiritual ,witchcraft2 his was not by the ,knowledge of the ,stars1 though he had some ,skill in that too1 but the ,power of his ,witchcraft did lye in the assuming and taking upon him the ,title of the ,great ,god1 as you may read in our ,books3 ,and so that his ,reason being more exercised in the ,scriptures upon ,spiritual ,matters1 because the whole ,body of the ,scriptures doth consist of ,spiritual and ,heavenly ,matter2 and he having more ,knowledge in the ,mystery of the ,scriptures at that time than all ,men in the ,world1 therefore he had many that did fall down and worship him2 because his ,knowledge in the ,scriptures1 did surpass other ,men1 and so produced ,voices in himself1 and could present lying ,signs and ,wonders1 unto all those that were deceived by him1 or that where afraid of him2 yet he did not deal with ,spirits that1 had not ,bodies2 but all that ,wisdom and ,witchcraft that he did shewn it came or arose out of his own ,spirit of ,reason1 which was inclosed in his own ,body4 ,and there is the ,influence of the same ,spirit of ,witchcraft doth now remain upon those ,people called ,quakers1 notwithstanding there seeming ,holiness1 for they have many ,times such fleshly ,fits falling upon them1 which doth seem as if they had the ,falling-,sickness1 and be as ,men dumb1 and will not speak a ,word for three or four ,hours together1 and upon a ,sudden they will break forth into strong ,language1 as if the ,spirit did immediately move them to speak4 ,this ,i say1 it is nothing else but an ,influence of ,john ,robins's ,spiritual ,witchcraft1 which is produced out of their own ,spirit within them1 and not from any ,spirit which hath no ,body without them4 ,and all this is1 they have no ,knowledge of the true ,god or the right ,devil4 ,therefore it is that the greatest ,part of the ,world doth lie under ,witchcraft1 either a ,natural ,witchcraft or a ,spiritual ,witchcraft1 there is a very few that is delivered from being under one or both of them2 there is none delivered but those that are come to have ,faith in this ,spiritual ,commission1 which is now extant in the ,world2 for ,faith in it doth lead ,men to the ,knowledge of the true ,god and the right ,devil1 with all those deep ,mysteries which doth depend on them1 the ,knowledge of which doth free a ,man from all ,witchcraft whatsoever4 ,therefore ,i would advise you to read the ,books of ours called the ,divine-,looking-,glass1 for that you may see there1 that there can be no ,spirits without a ,body1 neither can any ,witch or ,conjurer raise any ,spirit without a ,body3 ,but these ,conjurers may do through the ,ignorance and ,darkness of ,man's ,reason1 and that ,fear and ,belief that is in the ,ignorant1 they may by their ignorant ,power raise a ,shadow of things1 as if they were real ,bodies1 or ,spirits in the ,shape of ,bodies2 as the ,egyptians did before ,pharaoh ,king of ,egypt1 they did seem to raise ,frogs and ,grashoppers in the ,sight of ,pharaoh ,king of ,egypt2 but ,i say1 they were not real ,frogs and ,grashoppers1 but ,shadows of such things1 which as soon as ever the ,witchcraft ,power or ,art was over1 their ,frogs and ,grashoppers were gone also1 else would the ,king and his ,people been as much troubled at those ,frogs which the ,magicians did bring upon their ,land1 as they were with those which ,moses brought up1 which went into their ,houses4 ,and now if ,moses had not raised ,bodies as well as ,spirits1 or if he had raised ,spirits without ,bodies1 they would have been as little troubled at those things which ,moses did1 as they were at those ,shadows or seeming things1 which the ,magicians of ,egypt did4 ,there is something more in your ,letter you sent to me1 but ,i have not time at present to answer2 ,so resteth your ,friend1 ,lodowicke ,muggleton4 ,the ,prophet ,reeve's ,epistle to his ,friend1 discovering the dark ,light of the ,quakers2 written in the ,year #afed ,september the #bjth4 ,loving ,friend1 ,calling to ,mind the ,letter thou readest to me1 which was sent thee out of the ,country1 ,i am moved to present these ,lines to the ,view of thy ponderous ,spirit2 for as ,words of ,truth flowing from a real ,foundation1 drew forth ,humility and ,love to ,god and ,man1 from that ,soul that hath received an hearing ,ear1 so likewise thou mayst know the glittering ,words proceeding from ,man's ,carnal ,wisdom1 is that which hath occasioned many ,men to be exalted above ,measure1 and to imagine himself so essentially united to the ,divine ,glory1 that at length that ,man hath been so bewitched through the ,adorations of ,men and ,women in deep ,darkness1 with high ,conceits of his own ,spiritual ,wisdom1 that he hath been willing to deny his creaturely ,condition1 and to embrace the ,holy ,titles and ,honour of an infinite ,creator4 ,yea1 and to say in his ,heart and ,tongue also1 that there is no ,spiritual ,god or ,personal ,glory in the least1 but what is in ,man only1 notwithstanding1 as sure as the ,lord ,jesus liveth1 both he and all that is in him must turn into silent ,death and ,dust for a ,moment1 yea1 and would so remain unto all ,eternity1 if there were not a distinct personal ,majesty living without ,man to raise him again1 to everlasting sensible ,glory or ,shame1 according to the ,royal ,pleasure of that ,god1 that neither will nor can give his ,glory to another4 ,my ,dear ,friend1 be not deceived with ,mens crafty ,words1 who have no true spiritual ,distinction in them2 for if any mortal ,man have dwelling in him the eternal ,spirit1 all the ,motions1 ,thoughts1 ,words and ,actions of that ,man must needs be as pure1 holy and powerful as ,god himself1 because thou knowest they proceed from a pure1 holy1 and glorious ,spirit3 ,but of the contrary1 if thou perceivest a ,measure of ,light only abiding in thee1 which thou in ,mercy hast received from an everlasting ,jesus without thee1 then thou often seest ,darkness in thee as well as ,light4 ,for ,light entred not into ,sinners to make them spiritual ,gods one over another1 but it shined into them to discover their natural ,enmity continually warring against a ,god of eternal ,love towards them2 and not only so1 but to prevent also their former ,darkness from tyrannizing in them for ever1 yea and to consolate their elect ,brethren by their spiritual ,experiences4 ,wherefore1 from a ,divine ,gift which ,i have freely received from an unerring ,spirit1 ,i say unto thee1 that those ,men which labour to perswade their ,hearers1 that if they diligently hearken to the ,light that is in them1 they may attain to such a ,power1 as to be dead in this ,body from all ,kind of inward ,darkness1 ,sin1 or ,evil1 have uttered the falsest ,doctrine that ever was declared to ,men4 ,moreover1 if the ,light of ,life ,eternal be thy ,guide1 though must needs know then1 it was neither the justifying ,light of ,christ within ,man1 no nor the ,spirit of ,christ without ,man1 that moved those ,men to speak or write to the ,people2 but it was their own lying ,imagination which hurried them about to beget ,proselytes to themselves in the ,man ,christ ,jesus's stead1 who alone is ,god over all ,blessed for ever and ever4 ,amen4 ,he that is born of ,god sinneth not1 that is he is not left to his own ,heart to commit the unpardonable ,sin of ,unbelief in the true ,god1 in despising the ,spirit of ,christ ,jesus1 to be the only ,lord ,god of his ,salvation4 ,he that believeth shall be saved1 but he that believeth not is condemned already1 not because he hath not believed in a ,god1 or ,christ that is within him1 but because he hath not believed in a personal ,god or ,christ that is without him1 whose divine ,majesty is crowned with such immortal bright burning ,glory1 that if he did not vail his fiery ,nature within his own blessed ,body1 the ,glory of it is so transcendently infinite1 that he in a ,moment would consume all created ,beings to ,powder4 ,he that committed that ,sin of calling ,god a ,lyar1 which is the ,sin of not believing in our ,lord ,jesus ,christ as aforesaid1 or he that maketh glorious ,pretences of unfeigned ,love to ,christ and his tender-hearted ,people1 and yet secretly lyeth under the ,power of carnal ,filthiness2 such a ,man is not only of his ,father the ,devil1 7cursed ,cain7 but he also is a very ,devil himself4 ,he that saith he hath no ,sin in him1 is a ,lyar1 and the ,truth is not in him2 that is1 he that saith ,christ is so powerfully risen in him1 that all ,motions1 ,thought and ,desire of ,sin against ,god or ,man1 is perfectly done away1 that ,man is an horrible ,lyar1 and a deadly ,enemy to all humble and broken-hearted ,saints2 for their natural rebellious warring against the ,light within them1 and the ,lord of ,glory without them4 ,oh6 my precious ,friend1 for whom my ,soul spiritually travelleth1 till thou art firmly established with glorious ,things which are ,eternal2 not with empty ,notions proceeding from an imaginary ,god or ,christ within ,men1 only which with ,syrenion ,songs is very pleasing to the carnal ,ear1 which may delude some undiscerning ,spirits for a ,season1 nor with ,pharisaical ,looks1 ,sighs and ,groans1 to be seen of ,men1 which is nothing else but the ,effects of ,mens crafty ,words and ,gestures proceeding from ,man's fleshly ,wisdom1 which is abominable in the ,sight of our ,god1 who is the ,lord ,jesus ,christ in the ,eternal ,heavens above the ,stars4 ,my beloved ,friend1 give me leave a little to reason with thee1 about ,things of the greatest ,concernment3 ,what excellent ,truths above other ,men hast thou heard from the chief ,speakers of the ,quakers8 ,didst thou ever hear them speak to the ,purpose8 ,or speak at all of any ,god or ,christ1 but what is in ,man only8 ,or didst thou ever hear them speak of a bodily ,glory and ,misery to come sensibly to be enjoyed by the ,saints in the highest ,heavens1 and to be endured by the ,serpents in this ,world at the ,day of eternal ,accounts8 ,or dost thou see the ,image or ,likeness the true ,jesus in that ,ministry1 the true and living ,jesus1 rejected not the ,company of ,publicans and ,sinners1 even when his ,light appeared not in them2 but on the contrary1 do they not rashly condemn those ,men that soberly oppose them1 and shun the ,company of those that are not of their ,opinion1 as ,serpents2 much like unto those ,hypocrites of old1 who said1 stand farther off1 for we are more holy than you4 ,moreover1 in all their ,speakings and ,writings to the ,people1 do they not make a grand ,idol of the ,word ,light1 and occasion ,men to worship it as their only ,god2 as if meer ,words1 were to be adored without a ,person1 or worshipped within the ,bodies of sinful ,man as a ,god3 ,or as if those that enjoy true ,light in them1 have such a ,measure of ,god in them1 that they stand in no need of any ,god without them in the least4 ,my ,dear ,friend1 thou knowest ,men of unstable ,spirits1 ,child-like1 or rather ,fool-like1 are easily taken with every ,wind of ,doctrine3 ,but if thou hast a ,spirit of true discerning in thee1 thou wilt be made thorowly then to try the ,spirits and ,doctrines of ,men1 whether they be of ,god or no1 before thou embrace them2 having been in the ,fire of the ,devil already1 ,i hope thou hast gained ,experience4 ,wherefore for thy clearer ,sight concerning of the ,fallacy of all ,speakers1 which say1 the ,lord ,jehovah1 or ,jesus sent them1 ,i shall give some discovering ,characters2 he that saith the everlasting spiritual ,god or ,father1 became not a perfect ,man of unspotted ,flesh1 ,blood1 and ,bone1 was never moved by the ,spirit of ,god or ,christ1 to preach or speak to the ,people2 or he that saith1 that ,spirit which is dwelling in the glorious ,body of ,christ ,jesus1 is not the alone everlasting ,father1 ,god and ,man in one distinct ,person glorified1 is none of ,christ's ,messenger2 or he that saith1 ,god is not in the ,form of a ,man1 but is an infinite ,spirit essentially abiding in all ,creatures1 that ,man is a ,lyar1 and the ,truth is not in him2 or he that saith1 ,christ's ,godhead died not in the ,flesh1 and did not quicken and raise his ,manhood to ,life again1 and in that ,body of ,flesh and ,bone1 did not ascend into a ,kingdom of ,glory in another ,world1 the deep ,things of ,god is utterly hid from that ,man2 or he that saith all ,mankind proceeded from the ,loins of the first ,man ,adam1 is ignorant of the two ,scripture ,seeds 7namely7 the ,seed of the ,woman1 and the ,seed of the ,serpent1 therefore he is none of ,christ's sending2 or he that saith ,mens ,souls do not die with their ,bodies1 and sleep together in the ,dust of the ,earth1 till the ,lord ,jesus by the mighty ,power of his ,word speaking only1 do raise them unto ,life again at the last ,day1 that ,man is in deep ,darkness1 not knowing the ,scriptures or the ,power of ,god2 or he that says ,mens ,bodies of ,glory1 spake to me by ,voice of ,words three ,mornings together1 which ,speaking of his hath opened my dark ,understanding to declare such ,spiritual ,light to the ,chosen of ,god1 as never was so clearly manifested before1 especially in these ,six ,foundations4 ,first1 ,what the ,person of the true ,god is1 and his ,divine ,nature4 ,secondly1 ,what the ,persons of the holy ,angels are1 and their ,nature4 ,thirdly1 ,what the ,persons of the ,devils are and their ,natures1 and what the ,person of the ,devil was before he became a ,devil1 and begot ,millions of dark ,angels or ,devils1 it ,again1 ,if the ,lord ,jesus do not bear ,witness unto our ,testimony1 and make it evident that he hath sent us in a few ,months1 then you may conclude1 that there never was any true ,prophets nor ,christ1 nor ,apostles1 nor ,scripture spoken from the ,mouth of ,god to ,men4 ,but there is nothing but the ,wisdom of ,men and ,nature their ,god4 ,but this we know1 that those that are joyned with us1 are ,partakers of those ,truths1 and shall be blessed for evermore1 and shall in the mean time patiently wait for the fulfilling of our ,prophecy1 and shall have ,power over their ,thoughts1 ,words1 and ,deeds1 purifying their ,hearts by ,faith in the ,person of ,god even as he is pure1 trampling all the ,riches and ,honour of this ,world1 under the ,feet of their ,souls as ,dung1 because they have tasted of that ,glory to come1 that no ,tongue of ,men or ,angels can express1 and this makes them not only love one another in carnal ,things1 but for the ,truth's sake they are ready if 7need require7 to forsake all ,relations1 and ,life itself for one another2 and is that ,power of that one only ,faith and ,truth1 declared from the ,spirit of ,god1 the ,man ,jesus by us1 which none enjoys but those of this ,faith4 ,much more might ,i write1 but speaking ,face to ,face1 7if it may be7 is far more profitable3 ,farewell4 ,,john ,,reeve1 the true ,prophet1 of the only true ,personal you may know a ,man that hath not a ,commission from the true ,god1 to preach and speak unto the ,people4 ,if a searching ,speaker or ,writer1 deliver any thing unto those ,people that joyn with him1 then for fear of his ,weakness or ,ignorance being discovered1 he will counsel the ,hearers to stick close to the ,ordinances in the ,word of ,god1 or to hearken to them1 or to that in their ,eternity from the ever-living ,god1 revealed both by ,voice of ,words without1 and ,inspiration within1 unto his two last despised true ,messengers4 ,thus it is clear1 they have not the true ,spirit of ,paul in them1 who gave the true ,saints ,liberty to try all ,things or ,opinions of ,men1 7for that was his ,meaning7 but to hold fast to that which was good4 ,again1 that ,speaker or ,preacher to ,replication to mine doth but still harp upon the same ,matter as your former1 and yet you suppose you have given such ,arguments as may quite silence my former ,assertions1 were that there are no ,spirits without ,bodies1 but such as mere ,shadows2 and that ,god is not a bodiless ,spirit1 but hath and ever had ,form1 ,substance1 and ,shape1 and that is no other but the ,form of a ,man4 ,this is contradicted by you1 and so you affirm these ,particulars following4 #ast1 ,you take at those my ,words which said1 that if a ,spirit have no ,body or ,shape1 then it is no more then a meer ,shadow3 ,this you deny1 by saying1 that a ,shadow is only privative1 but a ,spirit1 say you1 is positive4 #b;dly1 ,you further say1 that there is such immaterial ,substances1 which have a separate ,existence from such gross ,bodies which we have about us2 witness say you the ,soul of ,man1 which is immaterial1 and lives after the ,body is dead1 which is1 say you1 confirmed by ,paul1 #b ,tim4 i4 #aj4 which saith1 that the ,gospel brings ,life and ,immortality to ,light4 #c;dly1 ,this ,doctrine1 say you1 was known by the ,light of ,nature to the ,heathen ,philosophers1 and hath since been confirmed by ,scripture of the ,new ,testament to us1 and so conclude it no ways repugnant to right ,reason4 #dthly1 ,you charge me with quoting the ,scripture falsly1 when ,i said1 that ,christ reply'd to the young ,man1 saying1 ,that no ,man was good but one1 which was ,god2 therefore say you1 it is false that the ,scripture saith1 that ,god is a ,man4 ,to each of these take this particular ,answer1 #a4 ,if your ,spirit have neither ,shape nor ,substance1 it is but a ,shadow1 and no more then what the ,egyptians ,sorcerers produced before ,pharaoh1 what ,moses brought up were real ,substances1 but their's no other but ,shadows1 but therefore a ,spirit without ,substance is not positive2 for that which is privative can have no ,being without a positive1 because that which is positive hath a ,being or ,substance3 ,now he that will not admit ,god to have a distinct ,being of himself1 his ,god that he worships is nothing but a ,shadow4 #b;dly1 ,where you speak of ,spirits being immaterial ,substances2 if they be immaterial1 how are they ,substances1 and what ,existence can they have1 and how can a ,soul be immortal in a mortal ,body2 it is said1 the ,soul that ,sins1 it shall die2 yet say you1 it is immortal and cannot die1 and would prove it in #b ,tim4 i4 #aj4 when as that ,place shews plainly1 that it was ,christ's ,death and ,resurrection which brought ,life and ,immortality ,light2 so that if there be not a ,resurrection1 then can there be no immortal ,life4 ,therefore it is1 that the ,scriptures doth affirm1 that there can be no ,salvation without a ,resurrection1 so that if the ,dead should not rise1 then were all ,faith vain1 and ,god the ,god of the ,dead 7seeing ,death is not abolish'd7 and not of the ,living2 so that there is no ,spirit that can subsist or have any ,existence without a ,body1 either ,spiritual or ,natural4 ,again1 doth not the ,gospel bring ,life and ,immortality to ,light1 and is this ,life and ,immortality brought to ,light without a ,body1 but it will have a ,spiritual ,body suitable to that mortal ,spirit made immortal4 ,and doth not the ,scripture affirm1 that it shall have a ,body like unto ,god's own ,glorious ,body1 and yet you say1 ,god hath no ,body1 and a ,soul hath no ,body4 ,do you not read also1 that ,christ had a ,body1 and that it was after the express ,image of his ,father's ,person3 ,would you trace substantial ,truth into an ,allegory1 and say ,righteousness1 ,knowledge1 and ,holiness is the ,image of ,god1 and yet must have no ,body to act for it self in4 ,when ,god said1 be ye holy1 as ,i am holy1 must we turn our ,souls out of our ,bodies1 to make them like your bodiless ,god4 ,when we are said to worship ,god in ,spirit and ,truth1 is this spiritual ,worship performed without a ,body1 although there is a ,mental1 ,privy1 and ,praise without a vocal ,expression1 yet it must arise from a ,heart1 and that ,heart must be placed in a ,body4 ,there is no ,light without a ,sun1 no ,stream without a ,fountain1 and no ,spirit without a ,body4 #c;dly4 ,as to your third particular1 this ,i must tell you1 that no ,light of ,nature can discover ,spiritual and ,evangelical ,truths1 and it is very gross for any ,man to subject the ,spiritual ,truths of the ,gospel1 to the heathenish ,principles of ,philosophers1 making the ,new ,testament no other but for the ,confirmation of the ,principles of ,nature1 which ,nature you call right ,reason1 which say1 you never repugns the ,gospel1 nor the ,gospel it4 ,by this your ,discourse ,i find1 that you own that ,christ came1 but to confirm the heathenish ,principles of ,nature1 as1 that ,god1 and ,spirits1 and ,angels1 were all without ,bodies1 being immaterial ,beings1 and you know not what4 ,now give me leave to be plain with you1 and to tell you1 that ,i could never read that the ,gospel of ,christ was ever sent to enlighten ,nature1 ,nature or ,reason hath no ,interest in it at all4 ,in the moral ,law it hath1 and therefore it is written1 the ,law came by ,moses2 and what to do1 but only to enlighten ,reason unto whom the ,law was given3 ,but as to the ,gospel1 it came by ,jesus ,christ1 and particularly belonged to another ,seed2 namely1 to the lost ,sheep of the ,house of ,israel2 so that you can no more distinguish between the ,law and the ,gospel1 than between the two ,natures of ,faith and ,reason1 it is all a ,mystery to you4 ,do you know what right ,reason is1 if you do1 you must ascend up into the ,kingdom of ,heaven1 and view it in the holy ,angels2 for you will not find neither pure1 nor right1 nor uncorrupted ,reason any where in this ,orb below the ,stars3 ,for it is evident that ,reason1 ,notion can never be capable to comprehend ,spiritual ,truths1 as from the ,power of its own ,nature1 it only serves to comprehend natural and temporal ,things1 it being but natural it self2 but ,gospel ,truths are comprehended by another ,light1 according as it is written by ,david saying1 in thy ,light shall we see ,light1 c4 ,so that from what is said1 we need not fear 7as the ,world have7 of the ,heathens rising up in ,judgment against us1 for maintaining ,gospel ,truths against their ,darkness of ,reason4 #dthly1 ,as to your fourth ,point1 where you charge me of fathering upon the ,scripture those things that are not1 and you make a ,wonderment of it1 that ,i should say1 that ,god was a ,man1 and to quote ,christ's ,words for it1 telling the young ,man1 that there was no ,man good but one1 which was ,god2 this you tell me was false1 for you say1 the ,text saith that none is good but one1 which is ,god4 ,here your ,ignorance appears very great1 and may be wonder'd at1 considering your great ,learning and continual ,study2 but it appears1 it is but in those heathenish ,philosophers2 for observe for better ,instruction1 did not that young ,man call ,christ ,master1 and own him to be a ,man and no more3 ,now to this you may find that ,christ's ,answer did tacitely imply1 that if he was but a ,man1 he was not perfectly good1 and that no ,man could be perfectly good4 ,and furthermore1 for a more full ,answer in the ,old ,translation1 attending to mark it1 is render'd thus ,word for ,word1 that there is no ,man good but one1 which is ,god4 ,this is plain ,scripture1 and yet you are ignorant of it2 ,i perceive you are not very conversant in ,scripture1 your ,philosophy turns you out of all ,scripture ,knowledge4 ,but to proceed farther1 cannot you find by ,scripture1 that ,god was ever called a ,man1 did not you ever read that ,scripture that saith1 ,god was a ,man of ,war4 ,much more might be said of this1 and several positive ,proofs from ,scripture might be produced to confirm it withal1 but because it is not the general received ,opinion1 therefore it must be quarrelled with2 for the ,honour of this ,world must be both sought after and submitted to4 ,and whereas you farther say1 that the ,apostles of ,christ did ever teach after they had received their ,commission1 that ,spirits were immaterial and could subsist without ,bodies1 now answer to this3 ,it is most certainly evident1 that the ,apostles never taught1 that any ,spirit could subsist without a ,body1 but the contrary altogether2 for their ,doctrine was1 that as the ,soul and ,body lives together1 so it dies together1 and at the ,last ,day rises together1 and is ever without ,separation4 ,when the ,apostles said1 ,that many ,spirits were generate into the ,world1 which denied that ,christ was come in the ,flesh1 did he mean ,spirits without ,bodies3 ,and when ,paul said1 that the ,spirit speaketh expresly1 that some shall depart from the ,faith3 ,now what ,spirit was that1 but ,paul's own ,spirit of ,faith1 in his own mortal ,body2 for without a ,tongue it could not be expressed4 ,and where the ,apostles tells of the ,doctrine of ,devils1 were those ,devils bodiless1 and teached damnable ,doctrine4 ,so that the ,apostles never taught that there was any ,spirits without ,bodies1 but always ,spirit and ,body went together1 and so makes ,longitude and ,latitude profoundly1 as your ,philosophical ,notions teacheth1 although you cannot apply it to any sublime or spiritual ,thing1 you knowing nothing of it1 but all is nothing and of no ,substance2 and so in that your ,darkness ,i leave you1 seeing you are no ,friend to the ,light2 and rest yours in all civil ,respects1 ,,john ,,reeve's1 the only true ,witness unto the very true ,god1 amongst many pretended ,spiritual ,messengers in this confused ,age4 ,an declared by the ,prophet1 concerning ,god's visible appearing in the ,flesh4 ,in your ,self-return1 you seem to mourn over the sunk ,spirit of both ,creations1 so termed by you4 ,also you write as though many from a ,satanical ,spirit write most accurately1 both of the ,works of ,creation and ,mystery of ,redemption by an immediate ,gift of ,god from our ,lord ,jesus ,christ4 ,to this ,i answer1 a little ,season will produce ,mourning enough in you1 when you shall see your ,angelical ,motions like ,lightning1 cast down with ,confusion of ,fear from their former ,perfection of more certain than ,reason or ,revelation1 which whether as ,i presume you were led into1 the ,lord will one ,day make manifest1 from the true ,light of ,life ,eternal4 ,to this ,i answer1 your ,light as terming of the true ,inspirations of the ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 written by me to you1 is because as yet his ,holy ,spirit vails them from your ,eyes2 but as for your new ,sound of teaching them from your ,god1 more certain than ,reason or ,revelation1 from the ,divine ,voice spoken in the ,ear1 through the ,glorious ,mouth of my ,lord4 ,i declare that in all ,ages the ,elect lost ,sheep of ,israel1 did never read or heard of any more than two original ,ways either ,natural or ,spiritual in ,mankind1 whether you call them ,creature or ,creator1 ,light or ,darkness1 ,truth and ,error1 teaching of all1 but he that expects that kind of ,teaching any more until ,men are immortalized1 lieth under at present as great an imaginary ,deceit1 as ever yet appeared in this ,land4 ,it is also granted that the most holy ,god speaketh to his ,chosen ,messengers by ,voice of ,words1 even to the hearing of the ,ear1 unto which ,truth for ,ends best known unto himself1 by his gracious ,power only1 can bear ,record in this present ,generation1 unto the ,grief only of all ,angelical1 ,wise1 ,envious1 ,proud1 ,inglorious1 ,hypocritical ,reprobates that hear of it4 ,moreover1 yet if your more sure way of teaching from ,god were ,vision it self1 yet it is impossible for you to enjoy any true and lasting ,peace1 unless it swallows up all your former ,writings produced from your own ,spirit1 without an immediate ,commission from ,god1 and in the room thereof1 perswade your ,soul to pour in your ,oil1 into the natural ,wounds of oppressed ,persons1 under what ,opinions or ,appearances not according to any fleshly ,imaginations1 but according to ,truth and ,righteousness of thine one ,ballance4 ,from the ,god of ,truth1 to this ,i answer1 concerning that ,spiritual ,captivity of the ,elect1 in ,reference of a right understanding of the ,creator1 you need not trouble yourself about that1 unless you think through much importuning the unchangeable ,god1 may be perswaded to loose their ,bonds before the decreed time thereof2 but if you think that ,glory of ,god's ,eternal ,love towards them1 will provoke to their ,spiritual ,darknesses through the invisible ,appearances of his own pure ,light1 then you may know1 until his own ,glorious ,season1 that all the ,desires of ,men or ,angels are of no ,effect1 no nor of the ,son himself1 if you imagine a ,father besides4 ',tis confess'd1 when the ,time draweth near of some great ,deliverance of the ,chosen of ,god1 usually the ,lord provokes his ,people to cry unto him with ,sighs and ,groans1 which cannot be uttered but from the innocent ,spirit of his ,spiritual redeemed ones1 as his ,due1 he may receive all ,honour1 ,praise and ,glory for their ,deliverance out of their natural ,darknesses1 unto his marvellous ,light4 ,again1 ,i declare from the true ,light of the true ,god1 that the ,spirit which entereth with the ,creator for all ,mankind1 upon the ,account of his ,eternal ,happiness1 was never principled upon a ,spiritual ,foundation of ,truth1 whatever subtile ,expressions of ,god's righteous ,ballance proceedeth from him4 ,moreover1 is it not the new heavenly ,glanses of ,christ ,jesus in ,man's dark ,soul1 which upon an immortal ,account1 becomes all ,light1 ,life1 or ravishing ,glory in him2 and of the contrary1 is it not the absenting ,voice or ,virtue of the uncreated ,spirit of the ,lord ,christ ,jesus1 that occasions ,mens ,spirits to be full of ,satanical aspiring ,wisdom about the ,creator2 and whence think you cometh this to pass1 or possible could be of the ,spirit1 if the ,creator were1 and ,angels were essentially living in one another there4 ,again1 if your literal ,request unto the ,lord ,god1 as in ,reference unto the miserable ,captivity of poor ,mankind1 lying under the miserable ,yoak of unmerciful rich ,tyrants1 especially over his own innocent ,seed or chosen ,people1 then this will most necessarily follow2 nay1 you cannot deny it1 if there be any ,light in you1 that all your conceived ,spiritual ,speakings1 or ,writings1 or ,prayers1 in the ,great ,day of the ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 will become but fiery burning ,death in you of utter ,darkness1 according to the true ,saying1 ,if that ,light in you be ,darkness1 how great is that ,darkness4 ,unless as before said1 answerable to your ,profession of ,love unto ,god1 and ,pity unto ,man1 you are a bountiful ,reliever of his oppressed ,ones1 according to his ,bountifulness towards you1 then mind the ,virtues of ,christ ,jesus thus shining in you1 will occasion from the refreshed ,bowels of his own ,seed new ,spiritual ,acknowledgments1 and a loving ,return in the ,lord for you1 why because it is rare to find a merciful rich ,man4 ,friend1 ,i certainly know that if you are one of ,god's ,elect1 you cannot be offended with me for writing the ,truth1 though at present1 ,i be contrary to you in ,spirit4 ,again1 you write that you would beg unto the ,lord for me1 both with ,tears and ,blood1 and you would speak somewhat concerning me1 but you are afraid to open the ,spirit before the ,season thereof4 ,friend1 ,as to that if ever the ,lord of ,life and ,glory manifest himself to your ,soul1 then you will see clearly the ,vanity of those ,words4 ,moreover1 if ,i should tell you1 that in the pure ,eyes of the ,lord ,christ ,jesus1 that one ,handful of your ,silver ,tears1 are of more ,value than a ,horse ,load of your ,tears and ,blood1 you might account it a very strange saying from me2 truly ,i unfeignedly believe it will be found a principal ,truth1 when our ,lord ,jesus ,christ shall say in the ,day of ,judgment1 ,come ye blessed of my ,father1 inherit the ,kingdom prepared for you1 for when ,i was a hungry1 ye fed me2 ,go ye ,cursed into everlasting ,fire1 when ,i was an hungry ye fed me not4 ,so that without ,controversy1 there is nothing in ,man comparable to ,love1 ,mercy and ,forgiveness1 even to his greatest ,enemies4 ,again1 ,it is a marvellous thing1 if you or any other ,man1 should have a ,spiritual ,gift to distinguish between ,divine and ,diabolical ,appearances1 and yet defer the ,examination thereof to another ,season1 or did the most wise ,god ever ,commission any ,man or ,angel to make a ,discovery of any ,spiritual ,counterfeits1 and yet that ,messenger remaineth dark in his own ,understanding1 concerning the ,creator that sent him4 ,i remember such a like ,scripture ,saying as this1 him whom you ignorantly worship1 declare ,i unto you4 ,moreover1 if the most wise ,creator1 either visible or invisible by himself or ,angel1 hath appeared in your ,spirit1 whereby unto your thinking1 ,i was clearly discovered as a deceived ,person among the rest1 is it not a strange thing that you should have ,power over that ,light above ,men or ,angels1 before you for the producing of it at another ,season1 the ,creator himself will visible make it manifest1 even so come ,lord ,jesus ,christ1 for thy glorious ,namesake1 come quickly1 and in the visible ,sight of ,men and ,angels bear ,record whether thy ,holy ,spirit sent me 7as ,i have declared almost these three ,years7 or no4 ,again1 when the ,lord made ,choice of such a simple poor ,man as ,i was1 as many can witness in the ,city of ,london1 that have known me about these twenty ,years1 that ,i might instrumentally discover the two principal ,heads of mischievous ,darkness in the ,land2 as namely1 ,john ,robins past1 and ,john ,tawney almost spent1 truly ,i had no ,power in me to put by his ,message until another time2 why because 7whether you can believe it or no7 his ,voice was so ,glorious in me1 that it shun as the ,sun1 and it was of ,motion swifter than ,thought1 and so pleasant to be declared by ,tongue2 yet for all that ,godlike ,glory piercing in me1 and through me1 there arose a ,desire in me to be eased of that ,burden of the ,lord committed to my ,charge1 because of that sharp ,sentence that ,i was to declare against any ,man that should despise it2 then the ,lord spake again unto my ,soul1 ,words of turning ,death1 of sensible unutterable ,darkness1 answerable to that ,jonas-like ,rebellion in me1 against so great convincing ,glory2 and truly ,i was compelled immediately to cry unto him for ,deliverance from the ,wounds or ,anguish of my ,soul1 that ,i might presently obey his ,word that shined in me with such ,light1 and ,majesty1 and ,glory in whatsoever it should command me4 ,wherefore ,friend1 happy are you if preserved from slighting an ,appearance1 that is contrary unto your ,light1 though it strike at the ,foundation on which is built all your ,spiritual ,enjoyments2 for alas1 you know in the ,end1 all false ,lights will be made manifest unto those that possess the true ,light of ,eternal ,life in them2 ,blessed therefore are those1 that in ,obedience unto the ,creator from a purified ,spirit are compassionate to all ,men1 but especially to those innocent ,appearances1 in the ,name of the ,lord1 though they all differ in their ,declaration for them4 ,if there be but one true ,messenger from the ,lord among the rest1 they shall as formerly1 receive an ,angel of ,god unawares1 and with him be ,partakers of the ,glorious ,secrets of the everliving ,god1 to their eternal ,consolation3 ,for this ,i know1 from the ,spirit of ,truth1 that those that are left under a ,spirit of rejecting and despising of false ,appearances1 coming forth in the ,name of the ,lord1 they not clearly knowing them to be so1 they will as readily despise a true ,messenger of the ,lord to their eternal ,hurt2 wherefore are all those1 that neither ,honour nor ,life it self is dear unto them1 but upon an ,account of ,spiritual ,wisdom amongst wise ,men1 when the ,glorious ,things of ,eternity1 though in base ,appearance
