turmoil4 ,emin ,bey has not been rescued and ,stanley's whereabouts and safety are uncertain4 ,is it not time that the duty of the ,american of ,african descent to the land of his fathers should be pressed upon him1 and that the ,christian church should help to prepare him for that duty8 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,sioux ,,bill4 ,the friends of the ,indians have sought earnestly and successfully to secure proper legislation looking to the civilization of the ,indians4 ,the ,dawes ,bill and the ,sioux ,bill have been hailed with joy as important steps in this direction4 ,but ,senator ,dawes himself and other intelligent friends of the ,indians have foreseen the possible difficulties in the way4 ,the refusal of the ,indians to sign the treaty at the recent council at ,standing ,rock1 and the indication at this writing that the same refusal will meet the ,commissioners at the ,cheyenne1 ,rosebud and ,pine ,ridge ,agencies1 present the picket lines of these difficulties4 ,but beyond all these lie the stronger hindrances4 ,the great trouble is that the ,indian is still an ,indian1 in his ignorance1 his want of training for civilized life1 his dislike of work1 and his incompetency to make profitable use of the lands and teams and implements proffered to him4 ,of what use to any man1 white or ,indian1 is #afj acres of land if he doesn't want it1 if he doesn't know how to use it1 and can't make a living on it8 ,after all that has been said and done1 the thing that the ,indian needs is a ,christian education4 ,if he has that1 he will know how to work and will be inclined to work1 and will become a good and self-supporting citizen4 ,christian friends of the ,indian6 rally to the great work of ,christianing these ,indians4 ,the primer and the ,new ,testament are their great want4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,mountain ,,work ,,and ,,the ,,colored ,,people4 ,there are three things which give special emphasis to the importance of pushing forward the 8,mountain ,work40 #a4 ,the great material1 intellectual and spiritual destitution of the more than two million people of our ,southern mountains--a people of good natural endowments1 who respond readily to the life-giving impulses of a pure gospel--is the thing which appeals most directly to our sympathy4 #b4 ,many well-informed business men are confidently declaring that this is the richest mineral region of the world4 ,already they are either building or planning railroads through every part of the mountains1 which are made profitable not only by the wonderful mines which open at their approach1 but also by the great forests of black walnut1 poplar1 and other valuable timber4 ,this1 of course1 means that the present primitive condition of things cannot long remain4 ,it must give way to something else4 ,whether it shall be to godlessness and wickedness of every form1 or whether the natural religiousness of the people shall be met with pure and uplifting gospel influences--with the ,church and the ,christian school--depends in a large measure on what our churches and individual ,christians say through the treasury of this ,association4 ,what will take years of work and thousands of dollars in the future can now be done in months and with hundreds4 #c4 ,but this work has a connection with our other ,southern work which has been little noted4 ,these mountains extend down into the very heart of the ,south1 in a territory #bjj miles broad and #ejj miles long4 ,in the late war1 the people were loyal to the ,union almost to a man1 and thousands of them fought for its preservation4 ,slaves were few among them1 and colored people are now scarcely more numerous than they are in the ,north1 though the proportion is increasing4 ,the result is a natural affiliation with what are known as 8,northern ,ideas40 ,the feeling against a ,christian treatment of the colored people is neither so bitter nor so deep-rooted as elsewhere in the ,south4 ,it has been demonstrated that no-caste churches and schools can be established and maintained1 and the general sentiment of the whole region can1 by vigorous missionary work1 be moulded to the ,christian view4 ,the people of this region--vivified and developed1 intellectually and spiritually1 on the broad basis of ,congregational ,christianity2 believing in1 and practicing1 the doctrine that all men were created free and equal and should have equal rights in all public matters2 and1 in their new and fast-increasing commercial importance1 in constant contact with other portions of the ,south--would furnish an unanswerable argument against the fears of the ,southern white people with reference to the amalgamation of the races1 and other direful results1 which would follow a just treatment of the colored man4 8,and seeing the man which was healed standing with them1 they could say nothing against it40 99 99 99 99 99 ,,emancipation ,,in ,,brazil--,,what ,,is ,,to ,,follow8 ,it is a curious fact that1 in precisely the last fifty years1 slavery has been abolished by the four great nations holding the greatest number of slaves and representing the three great forms of the ,christian religion--the ,protestant1 the ,greek and the ,roman ,catholic4 ,thus ,england1 a ,protestant power1 emancipated her slaves in the ,west ,indies in #ahch2 ,russia1 of the ,greek ,church1 freed her serfs in #ahfa2 the ,united ,states1 a ,protestant nation1 emancipated her slaves in #ahfc2 and now1 ,brazil1 a ,roman ,catholic empire1 completes the circle by emancipating her slaves in #ahhh4 ,while these facts are remarkable1 and present cause for profound gratitude to ,god1 there is yet a lesson of vital importance to be learned which ,brazil needs to understand1 and which1 indeed1 the other nations are not fully practicing4 ,in the ,british ,west ,indies1 very few white people remained after emancipation1 and the blacks lacked their guidance and example2 and besides this1 it was years afterwards before the ,british ,government made any adequate provision for the education of the ex-slaves4 ,from these two causes have come nearly all the evils that have grown out of the emancipation4 ,russia presents a still more striking lesson4 ,in #ahfa1 as the result of a great national movement towards constitutional liberty1 her fifty millions of serfs were emancipated4 ,the next year1 she celebrated the thousandth anniversary of her national existence1 and the enthusiasm for a free government was intensified4 ,but all these hopes were dashed--no new constitution was given1 the ,czar ruled autocratically as before1 the serfs were not educated or enfranchised1 and largely sunk into ignorance and intemperance4 ,the result of all has been nihilism1 and the ,czar lives in hourly fear of death1 and rules his people by terror1 the prison and ,siberia4 ,the ,united ,states has done far better4 ,it enfranchised the slave and made him a citizen2 the ,national ,government1 through the ,freedmen's ,bureau1 expended several millions of dollars for his education2 the ,states organized public school systems1 and the benevolent people of the ,north rendered still more effective service1 being the first to introduce the work1 acting always1 when permitted1 in co-operation with the ,bureau and with the ,states1 and continuing its work1 blending the educational largely with the religious4 ,but in spite of all this1 a dark cloud gathers on our horizon--the blacks are not allowed the free enjoyment of their guaranteed rights1 and the facilities for educational and religious enlightenment are entirely inadequate4 ,three millions of the blacks of ten years of age and upward1 in #ahhj1 could not write4 ,america needs not only to ponder these facts1 but to act upon them promptly1 if it would avert the impending danger4 ,in these facts ,brazil should read her warning4 ,if her ex-slaves are left in ignorance and vice1 she has her work only begun1 and the last end may be worse than the beginning4 ,the laws of ,brazil have favored gradual emancipation4 ,it was the work of a woman that completed it4 ,in the absence of the ,emperor1 who was sick in ,italy1 his daughter1 as ,regent1 issued the final decree4 ,may we not hope that the womanly wisdom and philanthropy which dictated the initial act may prompt to the persevering use of the means of the last great duty8 ,and may we not hope that1 as thousands of the educated women of the ,north devoted themselves to the uplifting of the blacks in the ,southern ,states1 so their sisters in ,brazil may give the crowning glory to emancipation in ,brazil8 99 99 99 99 99 ,,inter-,,blending ,,of ,,missionary ,,work4 ,the great ,london ,missionary ,conference1 recently held1 awakened much enthusiasm on the spot in behalf of foreign missions1 and we believe that the published records and addresses will intensify and perpetuate that salutary influence4 ,the ,christian world needs arousing to the great work of the church in heathen lands4 ,there is1 however1 an inter-blending in all parts of missionary work that should never be overlooked4 ,the home field is the source of the means1 and men1 and prayers1 that must energize the work in the foreign field4 ,dead churches at home cannot give life to mission work abroad4 ,there is another form in which the home and foreign fields are blended4 ,the ,american ,missionary ,association is ranked1 and properly1 as a home missionary organization1 but it has its relations to the foreign field4 #a4 ,it is called to train the ,freedmen of ,america for mission work in ,africa4 ,white men meet a speedy death in malarial ,africa1 and they come to the natives as strangers4 ,the ,freedmen can better endure the climate of their fatherland and will be welcomed by the people as brothers4 ,we believe that the great problem of ,african evangelization is destined1 in the providence of ,god1 to be largely solved by the ex-slaves of ,america4 #b4 ,the ,indians of the ,united ,states have been ranked heretofore as coming under the work of foreign missions4 ,at one time the ,american ,board had the largest share of its work among these people4 ,other ,christian denominations so classed their ,indian missions1 in part1 at least--and all this properly1 for the mass of the ,indians are still heathen4 ,the day will come when the ,indian will be lost in the man1 and then gospel work for him will be home or parish work4 ,but at present the ,american ,missionary ,association is doing foreign mission work in the home field1 among these ,indians4 #c4 ,the ,chinaman in ,america1 like the ,negro in ,america1 is cultured and ,christianized here very largely for the sake of ,china4 ,he comes here not to stay1 but to go back to the home of his fathers4 ,now1 if we don't stone him1 or mob him1 but imbue him with the gospel1 he goes back home as a missionary4 ,a specimen of the spirit in which he returns can be seen in the touching letter from a ,chinese convert in another column of this magazine4 ,the ,hong ,kong ,mission1 established under the auspices of the ,american ,board1 and to which our converted ,chinamen on the ,pacific ,slope contributed both men and money1 is an illustration of the way in which the ,american ,missionary ,association touches the foreign field in ,china4 #d4 ,last1 but not least4 ,the battle against caste must be fought1 and the victory won1 in ,america4 ,as the last battle against slavery was fought and won here for the world1 so we must fight the battle of caste here for ,india as well as for ,america4 ,fifty years ago very wise and good brethren said3 8,you ,abolitionists are right theoretically1 slavery is wrong and ought to be abolished immediately2 but practically you are a set of visionaries4 ,slavery is a local institution1 and if you wish to push your denominational interests in the ,south1 you must establish your churches there and let the question of slavery alone40 ,we have lived long enough to hear these brethren confess their mistake4 ,there are wise and good brethren now that say3 8,theoretically1 caste is all wrong1 but it exists and can't be overthrown1 and if you wish to press your denominational work in the ,south1 you must ignore that question and plant your churches on the color line40 ,somebody will live to hear those who take this position confessing for the enforcement of the law and the obtaining of our rights when they are denied us4 ,the colored people of this country need not expect that their white fellow-citizens are going to aid them in this struggle1 so we might as well put our shoulder to the wheel1 buckle on our armor and go forth to the conflict with stern faces and undaunted courage4 ,blessings never come to those who recline upon the indolent couch of ease and wait for them2 the honors of this life do not come unsought2 a tree planted does not grow to maturity and produce abundant fruit unless nurtured and cared for until organization of ,sunday-schools4 ,they were scattered throughout ,louisiana and ,mississippi1 and reached many needy fields4 ,they reported the following facts3 ,number of pupils in the day-schools which were taught by them #a1cih ,number of ,sunday-schools organized #ac ,these students were superintendents or teachers in #bb ,number of scholars in these ,sunday-schools #a1egd ,number of hopeful conversions to ,christ #afh ,five ,bands of ,mercy were organized with a membership of #aha ,four ,temperance ,societies were formed with a membership of #bda ,these facts furnish us excellent evidence of the judicious and enthusiastic efforts of these colored students to save and elevate their own people4 ,fifteen hundred and seventy-four children gathered into ,sunday-schools1 most of whom were absolutely unreached before1 by these twenty-two under-graduates of a single ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 school6 ,it is not strange that the ,president of ,straight ,university1 in giving these facts1 adds1 with evident satisfaction3 8,if a complete record could be made of all the work done in one year even1 by past and present members of our school1 or any of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 schools1 it would make an aggregate most wonderful40 99 99 99 99 99 ,turning now to the progress of ,sunday-school work in our great ,mountain field1 we find the same remarkable development4 ,calvary ,congregational ,church was organized at ,pine ,mountain1 ,tenn41 ,nov4 #bf1 #ahhg1 with thirteen members4 ,the following striking facts are just reported as the results secured in the past few months by the energetic ,christian workers in this church4 ,sunday-schools have been established in the following places1 with the enrollment given below3 ,calvary ,church ,sunday-school enrolled #adb ,shiloh 8 8 #abg ,new ,prospect 8 8 #fh ,lick ,creek 8 8 #gh making a grand total of #dae children and young people gathered into these ,sunday-schools on the mountain1 and only ten pupils of this whole enrollment had ever been in ,sunday-,school before66 ,another school is soon to be formed in this neighborhood4 ,this 8,pine ,mountain0 field is about #bj #fj miles1 and the little church which the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 built during the past few months is the only framed 8church house0 in the whole region4 ,think of it1 ,o ,christian friends1 you who hold the ,lord's money in trust1 #a1bjj square miles1 with cabin homes scattered along every 8cove0 and fertile valley1 left1 to this year of our ,lord #ahhh1 with only one suitable place of worship6 ,in building this new church1 the people themselves have strained every nerve and made large personal sacrifices4 ,they have had the occasional services of the ,general ,missionary of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 for that locality1 and ,i visited them once when ,field ,superintendent4 ,they have also been assisted from the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 treasury1 but they have labored in season and out of season themselves in order to establish this splendid work4 ,the rapid development of the ,sunday-schools is not the only feature of this work that merits our attention4 ,one member of this church has distributed during the year #dbd new ,bibles and #ade second-hand ,bibles4 ,he has visited #ejj families personally4 ,he found that #fj per cent4 of these people were without the ,word of ,god in complete form4 ,a few had mutilated copies of the ,bible4 99 99 99 99 99 ,there are hundreds of fields in the ,mountain ,work of the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 just as needy and just as hopeful as ,pine ,mountain4 ,all the facts indicate that ,god has now opened this field to us4 ,an intelligent mountaineer said to me1 some months ago3 8,our great and only hope lies in the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 and the ,congregational churches of the ,north40 ,surely these churches will not disappoint this hope1 nor refuse to heed the voice of ,god speaking to them in all the stirring events of this ,mountain ,work4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,busy ,,workers4 ,the hive of the ,american ,missionary ,association in the ,south has no use for drones4 ,the bees are at work summer and winter1 and they improve not only the 8shining hour10 but have to be busy in rainy days as well4 ,one of our workers who has long been in the field1 and who deserves to be kept there still longer1 writes as follows in accepting re-appointment3 ,i most cheerfully accept the work for another year1 and to show you that it means work for me ,helenwood4 ,made some calls on ,saturday and preached at night4 ,preached at #aa ,a4,m4 next day1 and walked eight miles to ,robbins and preached at night4 ,got up at #c o'clock and walked four miles to catch a train that would stop at ,glen ,mary4 ,reached ,spring ,city for breakfast at #f3cj4 ,came up home and answered what letters ,i needed to1 and went back to ,spring ,city to stay all night4 ,took train at six o'clock ,tuesday morning for ,sunbright4 ,rode out to ,deer ,lodge4 ,made four pastoral calls1 walking four miles to do it1 and was ready for an eight-mile ride in lumber wagon1 ,wednesday morning1 in the rain to ,mt4 ,vernon to deliver the oration of the day4 ,went back to ,sunbright next morning and found your letters of the #crd4 ,went to ,emory ,gap that evening4 ,walked out two miles in mud to see ,bro4 ,clark4 ,came back to ,sunbright ,friday1 so as to reach ,deer ,lodge for a church meeting that night4 ,made some calls ,saturday morning1 and then walked three miles to call on a ,congregational family that ought to unite with our church here1 and came back to preach at night4 ,taught a lesson in ,sunday-school next morning1 and preached4 ,walked to ,sunbright1 seven miles1 and preached at night4 ,got up at #b o'clock to walk seven miles to ,glen ,mary to take the early train to reach home and attend to correspondence so ,i can get off to ,crossville to-morrow4 ,i do not always have it put on quite so thickly as this1 but it is a pretty fair average4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,talladega ,,college4 ,,mrs4 ,l4 ,a4 ,,orr4 ,talladega ,college has just passed its eighteenth annual ,commencement which1 in many respects1 was the most successful ever held4 ,the exercises began on ,thursday night1 ,june #gth1 with an exhibition in the chapel by the second and third grades of ,cassedy ,school1 followed on ,friday by exercises in the ,primary ,department1 and at night by an exhibition by the fourth and fifth grades of ,cassedy ,school1 all of which reflected credit upon the teachers in charge4 ,to many of our ,northern friends1 these may seem a very insignificant part of ,commencement exercises1 but to these parents1 who consider all school work a failure which does not close with an exhibition1 and who will travel miles to hear their children 8say their pieces10 they are a very important part4 ,at these exercises the chapel was crowded almost to suffocation1 the hall and windows were full1 and many went away1 as they could not find even standing room4 ,on ,sunday1 in the absence of ,pres4 ,de,forest1 the baccalaureate sermon was preached by ,rev4 ,j4 ,m4 ,sturtevant1 ,d4,d41 of ,cleveland1 ,ohio1 and was full of rich thought and practical suggestions4 ,at night1 ,rev4 ,g4 ,m4 ,elliott1 of ,selma1 preached an excellent missionary sermon1 very helpful to the students who go out into the dark places to labor among their people4 ,the mornings of ,monday1 ,tuesday and ,wednesday were occupied with public examinations in the different departments1 and they all gave evidence of faithful work having been done by teachers and pupils4 ,the examinations in theology and moral philosophy were especially fine1 and would do credit to any ,northern white students4 ,monday night was given to the exercises of the three literary societies connected with the college and these were conducted wholly by the students4 ,on ,tuesday afternoon was the inspection of the industrial classes1 printing office1 barns1 c4 ,in the large airy sewing-room were samples of work done by the girls1 including quilts1 garments of all kinds1 and some very neat darning4 ,in the printing office several young men were engaged in type-setting1 presswork1 etc41 and the neatness of the printed programmes testified to the good work done by the 8college press40 ,visitors to the ,slater shop found the blacksmith at his forge1 the painter1 the glazier and the cabinet-maker busy at work1 and the wonder was that one small shop could accommodate so many trades4 ,the brick masons were laying the foundation for an addition to the building1 which will give better facilities for work4 ,the fine stock on the farm1 the new and improved farming tools1 the steam engine in operation1 and neat barns1 attracted many visitors4 ,a lecture at night by ,dr4 ,sturtevant1 on the subject 8,manners10 closed a very busy day4 ,thursday was ,commencement and the fullest day of the week4 ,first came the graduating exercises2 the class numbered seven1 three young women and four young men from the ,normal ,department4 ,next came the alumni address and essay1 after which the treasurer gave a brief statement of the resources of the college4 ,the increase in attendance as compared with last year was more than eighty4 ,at the alumni dinner1 in ,foster ,hall so heaby1 an' dis row am so long1 an' dis sun am so hot1 ,i tink dis nigger am called to preach de gospel40 ,next ,paul ,bledsoe of ,laredo1 ,texas1 spoke for 8,our ,normal ,work10 ,james ,brown for 8,our ,students10 and ,mr4 ,stephen ,childs1 of ,marion1 for the 8,parents of our ,students40 ,rev4 ,j4 ,silsby1 of ,tenn41 who was personally acquainted with the early history of the college1 responded to the toast 8,the ,founding of ,talladega ,college40 8,our ,churches0 was responded to by ,rev4 ,c4 ,b4 ,curtis1 of ,selma1 and ,j4 ,r4 ,sims1 of ,shelby ,iron ,works4 ,dr4 ,andrews closed with a few words for the college4 ,at night1 ,w4 ,p4 ,hamilton and ,j4 ,a4 ,jones1 who were graduated from the theological department in #ahhg1 were ordained to the work of the gospel ministry4 ,this closed the exercises of the week4 ,during the week1 many kind words were spoken for the college by friends from different parts of the ,state1 showing that the best colored people in the ,state appreciate the thorough work done here4 ,during the week ,president ,de,forest was very much missed1 but we all hoped that what was our loss would be his gain in health and strength from his trip across the ocean4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,trinity ,,school1 ,,athens1 ,,ala4 ,another year of pleasant work has just closed4 ,teachers and students1 though looking rather worn and weary1 are in the happiest mood1 for all feel it has been a good year4 ,the latter part of this school year has been specially characterized by very earnest study1 and an ambition to reach one hundred per cent4 in every thing4 ,one student has done this with a single exception1 and says that he 8shall surely make that up during vacation40 ,all have attained a higher standing than usual1 and our final examinations were excellent4 ,our sending a class to ,fisk ,university this year1 with favorable reports of them coming from month to month1 has proved a constant inspiration to our classes here1 and we hope as the years go by1 to send many more in the same direction4 ,but the great struggle with us is to hold our students long enough to take them through even an elementary normal course4 ,parents in their ignorance and extreme poverty1 are in such a hurry to have their children teach and earn money to help support the younger ones1 that1 as soon as they can get a third grade certificate to teach in the public schools of the ,state1 they are supposed to be educated4 ,and1 too often1 the people in the rural districts1 impressed with the wonderful attainments of the young teacher1 add to the folly of the parents in making these young people themselves1 7only the weaker ones71 think 8they know enough1 without going to school any more10 and so they drift into the ranks of those who 8think they are something1 when they are nothing40 ,this is one of our discouragements1 but we have very much for our encouragement in the beautiful homes that are springing up all over this fair ,south-land1 and in the noble band of intelligent1 consecrated1 ,christian workers who1 in pulpits and school-houses1 and in the conscientious and successful management of business1 are leading their people to a higher plane of living and to a truer citizenship4 ,our closing exercises were held on ,monday night1 ,may #bh1 our twenty-third anniversary4 ,our large and beautiful hall was packed as never before4 ,the audience was appreciative and very enthusiastic4 ,there were visitors from ,birmingham and ,decatur1 and all the towns along the lines of railroad4 ,they expressed great interest in what they saw and heard1 promising to send us many new students in ,october2 but the difficulty is to find suitable places for them to board1 as the parents all prefer to have their children in the ,institution under the constant supervision of teachers4 ,our exercises were quite novel1 and had some unique features that greatly pleased the patrons4 ,in all that was attempted1 the pupils acquitted themselves well1 and the little children especially pleased the patrons of the school in their beautiful and perfect ,scripture recitations4 ,all the ,sunday-school ,golden ,texts from ,october to ,june1 were recited without a mistake1 also several ,psalms and an entire chapter from ,isaiah4 ,bible truth planted in the hearts of these young children1 will1 we trust1 bear precious fruit in their future lives4 ,m4 company with two other young men1 also seeking summer employment1 both of whom opened subscription schools in the ,state4 ,i had taken two lessons a day in ,latin during the school year just ended1 and expected to 8double my ,greek0 the next year4 ,this would necessitate my being in at the beginning of the school year4 ,i had always been politically inclined1 and so had studied almost every artifice to win among strangers4 ,we three rode from ,hope1 ,arkansas1 to ,washington1 a distance of ten miles1 in an old-fashioned ambulance4 ,on arriving at ,washington1 we were taken to the house of the colored teacher of that place4 ,i looked at him2 he extended his hand2 ,i explained our business1 and immediately he volunteered to assist us4 ,i had a particular school in view on leaving ,nashville4 ,on arriving at ,washington1 ,i learned from ,mr4 ,shepperson1 the teacher referred to1 that one of the trustees of that school was in town4 ,i immediately started out in search of him4 ,in a short time ,i was presented to a stoutly-built1 heavy-set man1 who was introduced as the gentleman ,i desired to see4 ,i forthwith explained to ,mr4 ,holt1 for such was his name1 that ,i had been informed that there was a colored school to be taught that summer in his district1 and that ,i had come hoping ,i could get it4 8,yes10 said he1 8there is a school there1 but it will be a month before it can open40 8,is that so80 said ,i4 8,i don't see what ,i'll do4 ,have you any objections to its being opened now80 8,oh1 no2 if the colored people are willing1 ,i am10 said he4 ,but ,i could duster1 showed him my nice coat and shirt-stud1 at the same time telling him1 as fast as ,i could1 whence ,i came1 my object in coming1 and reading the ,fisk catalogue to let him learn something about the school4 ,he seemed satisfied with me4 ,his countenance had changed from its troubled appearance to a pleasant one4 ,but for ten minutes we argued the possibility of a cotton crop being made there if school opened then4 ,i made point after point1 but could not convince him1 so put out after his wife4 ,she was readily convinced of the desirability of having school open immediately2 she promised to send three children1 and to turn the old man4 ,i next encountered ,jack ,davis4 8,if you open school now1 we'll starve next winter10 said he4 ,i tried to show him differently1 but was unsuccessful4 ,i asked him for a drink4 ,on reaching the house for it ,i explained my mission to his wife1 and obtained her consent to open the school1 with her promise to send two4 ,i next met a man who had no children to send4 ,when ,i showed him the picture of ,fisk ,university 7,jubilee ,hall71 he immediately volunteered to work for me4 ,he and ,i went and saw nearly every man in the community before #i o'clock that night4 ,the majority were against me1 but ,i had resolved to open school there and then4 ,time would not permit me to delay longer4 ,the next day 7,sunday7 ,i was given a ,bible class to teach in the ,sunday-school4 ,to my surprise1 on going out doors ,i found that a preliminary school meeting had been held under the trees and that the ,sunday-school teacher1 though against me on coming there1 had changed and was marshalling his forces for the great meeting on the morrow4 ,at #aa o'clock that same morning ,i heard a rousing blast by a huntsman's horn4 ,on inquiring1 ,i found o-h6 ,i did not know there were little ,indian boys and girls60 but let me tell you1 little ,golden ,hair1 there are ,indian boys and girls4 ,they have some very funny names1 too4 ,but there is one thing pleasant about it2 their names are given to them because they mean something4 ,as ,i write this article1 ,i look out from my window and see an ,indian boy with a roughly-made sled drawing his little sister up the hill so that she can slide down again behind him4 ,little ,indians are not wholly unlike little white boys and girls4 ,they eat and sleep1 laugh and cry1 but they do not fight4 ,that comes with civilization4 ,i can from my window watch the boys and girls playing on the hillside every day as long as the snow lasts1 and ,i never have heard a child cry nor have ,i seen one child hurt another4 ,i can hear them laugh and shout and cheer when one tumbles off the sled1 but no angry or bad words are ever used4 ,they are very merry and happy when we remember that there is no ,indian child that does not know what it is to be hungry and have the mother say there is no food4 ,when a little baby comes into an ,indian home1 he is wrapped up in a blanket and it is tied all about him so that he cannot use his arms or legs1 and he looks very much like a rag doll1 but he cries and laughs just like a real flesh and blood and bones baby4 ,but1 little ,golden ,hair1 let me whisper to you one secret of the ,indian baby's happy life3 he never gets spanked6 ,they leave that to the uncivilized white mother4 ,so1 after all1 the white boy does not have all the good in life2 does he8 ,only think of sliding down hill a whole morning without even a board between the smooth snow and the trousers1 going home with wet and worn clothes and not getting whipped2 not even sent to bed6 ,indian children are never punished2 but1 after all1 they are not bad4 ,the boys like to hunt the snowbirds with bows and arrows4 ,they kill a great many too4 ,the little girls play with corn-cob dolls and little tents and travois1 or toshoes1 as they call them1 sometimes drawn by dogs4 ,the ,indian children have hard lives after all4 ,they cannot live to grow up unless they are pretty strong4 ,a great many little ones die for want of good1 wholesome food1 and many for want of fresh air and warm clothes4 ,we want all the little boys and girls in ,christian homes to remember the little
