be inserted in all copies of the above-listed manuals now in use or to be issued for use4 ,by order of ,lt4 ,col4 ,,zumwalt3 signature ,,henry ,e4 ,,bergschneider1 ,major1 ,air ,corps1 ,training suggested by the ,,boeing ,,aircraft ,,company1 manufacturers of the aircraft4 ,these positions were on trial1 but were as logical as could be devised without actual ditching experience4 ,the ,boeing procedure and its various modifications have all been steps in the right direction4 ,changes have been based on actual ditching experience and procedures set forth here are results of all ditching experiences to date4 ,they are not to be considered permanent4 ,as new ditching characteristics of the ,b-#bi are learned1 they will be incorporated to assure the safest procedures possible4 #b4 ,the importance of these approved methods cannot be stressed too highly4 ,modifications in these procedures may ,,not be made at the discretion of the airplane commander4 #c4 ,experience to date proves that ditching characteristics of the ,b-#bi are superior to those of any other aircraft now used by the ,army ,air ,forces4 ,the greatest factor in ditching is the airplane's buoyancy qualities4 ,the ,b-#bi has demonstrated1 even during mediocre ditchings1 that it will stay afloat for long periods and does not sink easily4 ,on a moderately successful ditching1 the aircraft is apt to stay afloat for at least ten 7#aj7 minutes and may float for several hours4 #d4 ,ditching impacts are severe4 ,every precaution must be taken to pad against impact in the ditching position4 ,parachute1 cushions1 clothing1 etc41 will be used for this purpose4 ,during impact the individual's head must be well protected4 ,the flak helmet will be worn only when the head can be braced against something substantial4 ,in all positions1 the legs should be flexed to absorb the effects of a sudden jar4 #e4 ,when injured crew members are aboard they will be put in the proper positions and_/or supported between the legs of other crew position4 ,this may be difficult1 but it has proven successful on numerous occasions4 #f4 ,ditching position practice1 as a part of completed ditching drill1 is a ,,must for all combat crews4 ,every step in ditching procedure must be practiced and learned thoroughly by the entire crew as a unit1 in order to eliminate confusion4 ,practice it against time until the entire process becomes second nature4 ,paragraphs #g through #ia are ,ditching ,procedure instructions for the various ,b-#bi crew positions4 ,these are reproduced separately for insertion in the applicable ,s4,o4,p4's for these positions4 #ib4 ,if time permits1 take one or more parachutes from the ditched aircraft4 ,the silk can be used to catch rain water and the shrouds have no end of use4 ,the web belt1 which supports the canteen1 should be buckled on after removal of flak vests4 #ic4 ,prior to ditching all escape hatches will be jettisoned or opened to prevent jamming in the event that the fuselage accordions4 #id4 ,an important phase of crew cooperation is the estimation of time remaining aloft and the position where the ditching will take place4 ,the most efficient ,air-,sea ,rescue ,agency is only as efficient as the cooperation it receives from crews in distress4 ,the rescue agency must get notification of the ditching and the position4 ,crews must practice transmitting procedure until it becomes ,s4,o4,p4 ,the engineer1 with the information available1 will make an estimate as to the time remaining aloft4 ,this information will to passed to the navigator1 who1 on the basis of the information supplied1 will estimate the position of ditching4 ,the position will be given to the radio operator who will transmit the information to personnel who can effect a rescue4 #ie4 ,this system of cooperation will not always be applicable1 but it is a framework for crew cooperation4 ,,equipment3 #if4 ,combat crews are subject to last-minute changes in aircraft4 ,therefore1 it is essential to standardize the location of emergency equipment within the aircraft4 ,individual responsibility for the removal of this equipment must also be fixed4 #ig4 ,the locations of the emergency equipment are based on their accessibility for the crews when in ditching position4 #ih4 ,the later ,b-#bi aircraft are equipped with the new modified ,e-#b raft4 ,this raft has its accessory kit lashed to the raft itself4 ,the older type utilizes the ,a-#c raft which stows the accessory kit in the airplane proper4 ,,changes3 #ii4 ,as new developments are made in the ,air-,sea ,rescue field1 existing procedures and equipment will be modified4 ,research in this field is being conducted in the ,united ,states as well as in the theatres of operation4 ,the new information1 as it becomes available1 will to disseminated to the units of the command via publications and by ,personal ,equipment ,officers4 ----------,,end---------- #ajj4 ,a combat crew thoroughly trained in
