,,guide ,,to ,,the ,,canyon ,,area #ae ,illustration3 ,,national ,,park ,,service ,department of the ,interior ,this leaflet has been produced to increase your enjoyment of ,yellowstone ,national ,park by the ,yellowstone ,library and ,museum ,association in cooperation with the ,national ,park ,service4 ,u4 ,s4 ,department of the ,interior #d_/gh ,there are miles of trails in the ,canyon area4 ,many are well traveled1 short and paved2 others are maintained and marked1 but not paved4 ,the elevation of the ,canyon rim is about #hjjj feet1 which makes even the short walks surprisingly strenuous for many people4 ,take your time1 and wear good walking shoes or boots4 ,at times it is wise to carry raingear4 ,on the longer trails you may want to carry water and a lunch1 or whatever food you think necessary4 ,as you travel1 to avoid accidents1 watch your footing and please stay on the trails4 ,climbing into the ,canyon off the established trails is both dangerous and prohibited by law4 ,due to the steepness of the ,canyon walls many trails have been constructed in switchback 78zigzag07 fashion4 ,it is dangerous to cut across switchbacks4 ,you can easily slip and fall and you might knock rocks down on someone below you4 ,you would also cause ugly and unnatural erosion of the walls4 ,do not throw anything into the canyon4 ,rocks and other hard objects might injure someone below you4 ,litter is unsightly4 ,removing litter from the ,canyon is a dangerous and expensive job4 ,please help us keep the area clean4 ,if you plan to hike overnight in the backcountry be sure to pick up a backcountry permit at the ,ranger ,station4 ,while there you can also obtain the latest trail information and advice regarding the adequacy of your equipment for the trip4 ,for longer trips you should purchase a ,,usgs topographic map of the park4 ,these are available at any ,visitor ,center4 ,permits should be obtained before #e p4m4 ,most trails in ,yellowstone are marked with orange or yellow metal tags tacked to trees or posts4 ,in wooded sections the tags are fairly small 7about #ce inches72 in meadows they are larger 7about #h inches square74 ,please ,,stay ,,on ,,the ,,trails4 ,getting lost in ,yellowstone is no laughing matter4 ,the ,canyon area1 like all of ,yellowstone1 is grizzly bear country4 ,the backcountry traveler always runs some risk of an encounter with a bear4 ,to reduce this risk1 make noise as you hike through areas where you might accidentally startle a bear4 ,whistle1 or attach a bell to your pack4 ,in season1 guided horseback trips are regularly taken on some of the ,canyon area trails4 ,in addition there are many pleasant half day and full day rides that can be arranged4 ,the saddle horse concession is located #a miles south of ,canyon ,junction on the ,lake-,canyon road4 ,should you wish to bring in your own stock you should write the ,chief ,ranger well in advance of your trip for particulars4 ,if you intend to keep your animals overnight in any of the developed areas they must be boarded at the horse concession since there are no combined facilities for grazing and camping4 ,on the road in ,yellowstone you are on the threshold to wilderness4 ,plan your off-the-road1 wilderness trips with care4 ,savor the best that your ,national ,park has to offer--its backcountry4 ,please take only pictures--let no one regret that you walked here4 ,trail from ,grandview to 8,p0 ,loop ,cabin ,area--,park at either end of the trail4 ,about mile in length1 this paved trail is especially pleasant in the early morning4 ,trail offers essentially the same view of the ,lower ,falls as ,red ,rock1 but does not permit the viewer to get as close to the falls4 ,grandview ,trail--,park at the ,grandview parking area4 ,this is a very short paved walk to a view of much of the ,canyon4 ,inspiration ,point ,trail--,park at the northernmost parking area on the ,north ,rim ,drive4 ,several steps direct you down this short1 paved walk to an overlook providing a spectacular ,canyon ,view4 ,north ,rim ,trail--,portions of this trail are paved4 ,starting at ,chittenden ,bridge1 the first mile to the ,upper ,falls parking area takes the hiker close to the river1 a beautiful and impressive torrent as it approaches the ,canyon4 ,from slightly west of the ,upper ,falls parking area the trail continues past ,crystal ,falls1 on ,cascade ,creek1 to the ,lower ,falls parking area1 another mile1 then to ,lookout ,point 7 mile71 to ,grandview ,point 7 mile71 and finally to inspiration ,point 7#a miles74 ,by trail1 ,inspiration ,point is slightly more than #b miles from the ,upper ,falls parking area1 and #b miles from ,chittenden ,bridge4 ,though the full length of all trails is not shown on the map1 a number of longer hikes originate within the mapped area4 ,a brief description of these trails is given below4 ,backcountry permits are required for all overnight hikes4 ,howard ,eaton ,trail to ,cascade1 ,grebe1 ,wolf1 and ,ice ,lakes1 and ,norris--,from the trailhead mile west of ,canyon ,junction on the ,norris-,canyon road the hiker passes through forest1 meadow1 and marshland to ,cascade ,lake 7#c miles71 ,grebe ,lake 7#d miles71 ,wolf ,lake 7#f miles71 ,ice ,lake 7#h miles71 and ,norris 7#ab miles74 ,with the exception of the trail up ,observation ,peak from ,cascade ,lake1 trails in this area have little vertical rise4 ,the climb to ,observation ,peak is strenuous1 rising about #adjj feet in #c miles4 ,from the top the hiker is rewarded with an outstanding view of some of ,yellowstone's wilderness country4 ,a second spur from the ,howard ,eaton ,trail in this area takes the hiker from ,cascade ,lake to ,cascade ,lake ,picnic ,area1 which is #a miles north of ,canyon ,junction on the ,tower-,canyon road4 ,the hiker with limited time can take a very enjoyable walk from the picnic area to the lake1 then on to the trailhead at the ,norris-,canyon road1 covering about #e miles4 ,a third spur from the ,howard ,eaton ,trail offers easy access to ,grebe ,lake from the ,norris-,canyon road4 ,about #c miles west of ,canyon ,junction1 at the ,grebe ,lake parking area and trailhead1 a #c mile trail goes directly into ,grebe ,lake4 ,when coupled with the ,howard ,eaton ,trail from either ,cascade ,lake ,picnic ,area1 or the trailhead mile west of the junction1 half day walks of about #f and #g miles1 respectively1 are possible4 ,howard ,eaton ,trail to ,tower ,fall2 ,seven ,mile ,hole--,park at the ,glacial ,boulder4 ,until its juncture with the ,howard ,eaton ,trail1 this trail follows the ,canyon rim past a good view of ,silver ,cord ,cascade1 at #a miles4 ,at almost #b miles this rim trail joins the ,howard ,eaton4 ,continue north at this junction4 ,at #c miles the ,seven ,mile ,hole ,trail drops off to the right1 #abej vertical feet in about #b miles4 ,hike it carefully1 watch your footing1 and conserve your energy4 ,depending on your condition and the weather1 it can be a long climb back out of ,seven ,mile ,hole4 ,if you continue north past the ,seven ,mile ,hole ,trail junction you will approach ,washburn ,hot ,springs at about #e miles1 and come to another junction at #f miles4 ,this is the ,mt4 ,washburn ,spur ,trail1 a secondary trail which climbs about #bjjj feet in a little more than #b miles4 ,this1 too1 is a long climb even if you are in good condition4 ,from the top it is #c miles down the other side of the mountain to ,dunraven ,pass1 on the ,tower-,canyon road4 ,if you continue north from the ,mt4 ,washburn ,spur ,trail junction you eventually reach ,tower ,junction1 #bj miles from ,glacial ,boulder4 ,uncle ,tom's ,trail--,a short walk into the ,canyon at the base of the ,lower ,falls4 ,because this is a very strenuous walk1 dropping about #ejj feet over a series of stairways and paved inclines1 it is not recommended for people with heart and lung conditions4 ,much of the walk is constructed of perforated steel sheeting1 so you should wear comfortable1 flat-heeled walking shoes which will not get caught in the mesh4 ,portions of the walk are often wet1 which in the spring or fall1 or in the early morning1 may be a film of ice4 ,for those in good condition this is a very rewarding walk4 ,artist ,point ,trail--,a very short walk from the parking area at the north end of the ,south ,rim ,drive4 ,many people consider this the best view of the ,lower ,falls and much of the ,canyon4 ,clear ,lake ,trail--,from the ,uncle ,tom's ,trail parking area this trail takes the hiker through large rolling meadows and forested areas to ,clear ,lake4 ,it is about #b miles roundtrip4 ,bison and elk may be seen in these meadows in the early mornings and late afternoons1 especially in the fall4 ,large ground squirrel populations and an abundance of succulent grasses and plant roots often attract bears to these meadows in the spring1 where they spend hours digging and grazing4 ,south ,rim ,trail--,park at the large lot near ,chittenden ,bridge4 ,this partly paved trail parallels the ,canyon for #c miles to ,sublime ,point4 ,many striking viewpoints of both falls and the ,canyon can be reached on this trail1 as well as access to ,uncle ,tom's ,trail1 ,artist ,point1 ,lilypad ,lake 7about of a mile from ,artist ,point71 and ,sublime ,point 7about #a miles from ,artist ,point74 ,ribbon ,lake ,trail--,from the ,chittenden ,bridge parking area follow the markers along the ,wapiti ,lake ,trail until you come to a junction1 at about #c miles4 ,bear left 7north7 at the junction2 ,ribbon ,lake is about of a mile farther4 ,connecting trails to ,lilypad ,lake1 ,clear ,lake1 and the ,south ,rim ,trail offer several possible variations to this trip4 ,as with the longer trails on the north side of the ,canyon1 the full length of all trails is not shown on the map1 but all of the trips described below originate on the mapped area4 ,backcountry permits are required for all overnight hikes4 ,wapiti ,lake ,trail--,park at ,chittenden ,bridge parking area4 ,this full day's hike up and over the southern end of the heavily forested ,mirror ,plateau to ,wapiti ,lake is a reward in itself for the strong hiker4 ,the lake is about #ah miles from ,chittenden ,bridge4 ,sour ,creek ,trail--,park at ,chittenden ,bridge parking lot4 ,this very popular riding trail is also a beautiful walk4 ,allow a little more than a half a day for the roundtrip walk to ,wrangler ,lake4 ,follow the ,wapiti ,lake trail for about #a miles4 ,follow the signs at the junction1 bearing right 7south7 to the lake1 an additional #c miles4 ,most of the way is through large rolling meadows at the northern end of ,hayden ,valley4 ,elk often graze at ,wrangler ,lake early and late in the day4 ,howard ,eaton ,trail to ,lake--,allow a full day for the hike from ,chittenden ,bridge through ,hayden ,valley on the east side of the ,yellowstone ,river4 ,grizzly bear1 bison1 elk1 and moose--or their sign--are commonly seen on this walk4 ,all large animals are potentially dangerous and should not be approached4 ,a lone bull bison is alone for several reasons1 one of which may be that he just does not want any company4 ,also1 for your own safety and for their well-being you should never disturb wildlife with young4 ,the river teems with life4 ,it is closed to fishing in ,hayden ,valley so that nesting waterfowl can raise their young in peace4 ,look for ducks1 geese1 trumpeter swans1 pelicans1 muskrat1 mink1 otter1 and coyotes4 ,illustration3 ,,grand ,,canyon ,,and ,,falls ,,of ,,the ,,yellowstone
