building could be built for #a1bjj4 ,to continue the work going on and to pay our debts1 ,i request the usual allowance for ,galveston4 ,a short while ago ,i administered the ,sacrament of ,confirmation to seventeen colored people2 this indicates about the results of our efforts here in ,galveston in the work of evangelizing the ,negroes40 ,,kansas ,,city1 ,,kansas4 ,the ,rt4 ,rev4 ,l4 ,m4 ,fink of ,kansas ,city1 submits the following communication touching the mission work in his diocese4 ,it will be found interesting4 8,the number of colored ,catholics has not been notably increased during the past year4 ,about one-half of the adults baptized since the last report obtained that grace in articulo mortis4 ,prejudice and ignorance will1 however1 be gradually removed1 it is hoped1 and then the work will go on more rapidly4 ,our schools are quite satisfactory1 both in point of attendance and in the progress made by pupils in their studies4 ,the ,guardian ,angel ,asylum is a very promising institution1 and well worthy of all encouragement4 ,here colored children1 in their tender years1 imbibe the principles and practices of ,christianity4 ,aloof from all contaminating influences1 their dispositions are carefully regulated1 their minds cultivated1 in a word1 they are wisely prepared to become faithful ,christians and useful members of an enlightened community4 ,the buildings now occupied are entirely inadequate for the work4 ,many of ,christ's little ones must grow up in filth and ignorance and sin1 because they who are otherwise so able and willing to keep them1 lack the means of providing ample accommodations for the helpless and forsaken4 ,one thousand dollars are needed for the ensuing year to keep up the ,sisters' schools at ,leavenworth and ,topeka1 make an addition to the ,colored ,orphan ,asylum at ,leavenworth1 and furnish part of support to one priest40 ,from a letter of ,bishop ,fink1 accompanying his report to the ,commission1 we quote the following3 8,last year ,i felt very much discouraged2 this year ,i feel more encouraged4 ,we have again a very good school for colored children at ,leavenworth4 ,we have about twenty-five colored boys in our orphan asylum4 ,the building being too small1 we were unable to take in any girls4 ,in order to give room to those we have1 and to take in a few more1 we have to put an addition to our present accommodations4 ,this will entail an expense of some #ejj4 ,i do not dare to ask for more than a thousand-- which will leave a small sum at my disposal to support two schools1 the ,colored ,sisters and give a fractional salary to the priest1 who is almost exclusively engaged in the colored work at ,leavenworth4 ,we have not recuperated from the loss we sustained at ,topeka1 by the ,oklahoma exodus1 about two years ago4 ,besides adding a sanctuary to the school-house1 separated by folding doors1 so as to give the colored people divine service on some ,sunday evenings1 nothing more was done1 except to keep up the colored school4 ,if ,i could have any hope of getting for once only1 an appropriation of #cjjj1 or #djjj1 ,i would feel encouraged to put the ,orphan ,asylum for colored children on a firmer basis4 ,for this purpose ,i would have to secure a site in the country1 with a sufficient piece of land1 to train the children to work and make the institution self-supporting in the course of a few years4 ,my diocese is poor2 it receives the poor from the eastern cities and towns4 ,for these we try to do the best we can1 but they do not become wealthy or able to give much help even to their own churches and schools1 much less to the ,negro cause4 ,even if they would like to be generous1 as many of them try to be1 still they are unable to contribute much4 ,thus in other words1 ,i can expect very little1 if any1 help from my own diocese4 ,we have a large ,negro population in ,kansas ,city1 perhaps some #fjjj souls1 among whom there are not over one half dozen ,catholics4 ,as soon as our missions become self-sustaining1 a beginning can be made here4 ,i have not a sufficient number of priests at present for the whites1 let alone the means40 ,,little ,,rock1 ,,arkansas4 ,bishop ,fitzgerald1 of ,little ,rock1 feels sanguine of the future success of ,catholic ,missionary work in his diocese4 8,there is at the present time a somewhat better prospect for conversions than existed last year1 as the colored people begin to see that we mean them good1 not harm4 ,the most flourishing school is at ,pine ,bluff4 ,here the usual common-school branches are taught1 together with music1 vocal and instrumental4 ,the girls are taught sewing1 domestic work1 etc41 and the boys1 carpentry4 ,three ,sisters of ,charity are employed as teachers2 and also an instructor in carpentry and building4 ,the ,hot ,springs' ,school is also doing well4 ,in our five schools we have four hundred and fifty pupils enrolled4 ,on the whole1 ,i feel more encouraged than when ,i last wrote4 ,we have not as yet been able to open a school at ,little ,rock4 ,the colored people here are superabundantly supplied with schools1 public and private4 ,the ,colored ,industrial ,school1 although but three years1 founded1 is a pronounced success4 ,the attendance is much larger than usual1 and promises to reach1 when cotton picking time is over1 two hundred and fifty pupils4 ,in a few years it is hoped that a farm will be procured1 and a full course of trades and farm work gradually developed40 8,it is desired by the ,directors1 ,teachers and ,patrons of the school to commemorate the great centennial year of #ahib1 by the erection of a home for the ,sisters of ,charity1 a little church for the people and a small house for the pastor4 ,there are #cej1jjj colored people in ,arkansas1 the greater part in the cotton ,belt ,region1 of which ,pine ,bluff is the centre1 and there is not one ,catholic church for colored people in the whole ,state4 ,before the war many of the colored people were ,catholics1 but have fallen away from the church through want of that attention1 which the poverty of the diocese could not grant them4 ,a great number would now gladly return if a proper chance was offered4 ,at present1 ,mass is held every ,sunday in ,st4 ,joseph's ,church for their special benefit4 ,while they have always been invited to attend the regular services of the church here and elsewhere in the ,state1 they have1 as a rule1 refused to do so1 owing to the fear of feeling on the part of the whites1 and the demands of the regular congregation4 ,with the great success of the school and the sympathy of both colored and white citizens1 we feel1 that we are offering a rare opportunity to the charitably disposed4 ,we1 therefore1 most earnestly request all friends of the colored people to send us a donation1 large or small1 to aid us in this great work4 ,the usual masses and prayers will be offered for all benefactors40 ,an interesting history of this school will be found in last year's report of 8,the ,negro and ,indian ,commission40 ,,louisville1 ,,ky4 ,there are #djjc colored ,catholics in the diocese of ,louisville4 ,eight special schools for colored children are in good running order1 with an enrollment of #fhj pupils4 ,these schools are under the direction of the ,sisters of ,charity of ,nazareth1 of ,loretto and of lay teachers4 ,the colored ,catholics of ,louisville have a church of their own1 attended by a regular priest of the ,josephite order4 ,two hundred and four baptisms have been reported during the last year4 ,,mobile1 ,,ala4 ,according to the late census there are #gjf1bdc colored people in the diocese of ,mobile4 ,about #b1ejj of this vast number are ,catholics4 ,the total ,catholic population1 negroes and whites included1 is scarcely #ag1jjj souls4 ,these figures will give us some slight idea of the difficulty to be met with on every side in the work of propagating the faith4 ,priests1 money and moral support are absolutely necessary to achieve any missionary success4 ,bishop ,o',sullivan has five colored schools directed by the ,sisters of ,mercy and by lay teachers4 ,two hundred and thirty-five pupils attended them4 8,these schools do much good4 ,the attendance would be larger if they were entirely free4 ,in our present circumstances ,i think it advisable to exact a small fee for tuition4 ,people do not always appreciate what they get for nothing4 ,the children are well instructed in the catechism and make good progress in their studies4 ,through the children we hope to lead the parents to the church4 ,we have at last opened the mission for colored people in ,pensacola4 ,father ,fullerton generously took charge of the work4 ,we have a church and school combined4 ,it is a frame building1 two stories high1 #ge feet by #cb feet4 ,the first story is used for school purposes and the second as a church4 ,the ,sisters of ,mercy teach the school4 ,the building was blessed ,december #dth1 there being large congregations present at the three services4 ,the church is under the patronage of ,st4 ,joseph4 ,i am more than hopeful for the success of this mission4 ,we need a house for the ,pastor and as the church is yet to be built we have secured a lot in a fine situation4 ,we receive very few adult converts from among the colored people4 ,however1 the proportion of colored converts is equal to the number of white converts4 ,hence1 there is no good reason why we should look on the conversion of the colored people as hopeless2 on the contrary1 the outlook is encouraging4 ,if we plant the good seed1 our successors will reap a rich harvest4 ,we must work and wait and pray until the ,lord sends the harvest4 ,the ,catholics in the ,south are so few1 that it is impossible for them to supply missionaries and means to carry on the work4 ,help must come from outside4 ,may ,god bless all who help in this mission40 ,,nashville1 ,,tenn4 ,there is but forty colored ,catholics in this diocese4 ,the colored population numbers #dcd1cbj4 ,the contrast is very striking4 ,the diocese has suffered much on account of the ,civil ,war and the terrible yellow fever plagues that ravaged the ,south in #ahfg1 #ahgc1 '#gh and '#gi4 ,these successive plagues carried off twenty priests and many religious1 dealing a blow1 from the effects of which the diocese has not as yet been able to recover4 ,there is one special school for the colored people4 ,it is located in ,memphis and has a membership of #afg pupils4 ,bishop ,rademacher writes that in regard to this school1 ,father ,moran1 of ,st4 ,peter's ,church1 informs him that the progress of the pupils is very encouraging4 8,towards the close of the term1 however1 the #8,oklahoma fever' attacked our colored people and many of those who went out there were the parents of our children1 and of course we lost those children4 ,the tendency of the colored people to roam about is one of the chief obstacles to the success of the school4 ,the race trouble in ,memphis last ,spring had also an injurious effect4 ,the experience of the last four years has not been very encouraging4 #8,i believe' says ,father ,moran1 #8we are removing prejudice and gradually convincing the colored people that the ,church is honestly trying to do something for them4 ,the children are taught the catechism and prayers and are making satisfactory progress in them4 ,but for good and sufficient reason1 it has not been deemed prudent to receive1 as yet1 any of them into the church4'0 ,,natchez1 ,,mississippi4 ,in the ,state of ,mississippi the negroes out-number the whites4 ,the ,catholic population of the whole ,state numbers but #ae1jjj1 out of which #ahch are colored4 ,there is perhaps one colored ,catholic in every seven hundred of the population4 ,five colored schools are kept open with an average attendance of about two hundred children4 ,these schools are in charge of religious4 ,bishop ,heslin has a wide field for work4 ,one of his priests1 a very zealous man1 is engaged exclusively in ,negro ,mission work4 ,this priest1 the ,rev4 ,a4 ,n4 ,peters1 has just purchased a plot of ground in a locality easily accessible to the colored people4 8,this will entail additional expense10 writes ,bishop ,heslin1 8as almost every building that is required will have to be built new1 and the old place cannot be disposed of at once4 ,the ,rev4 ,father will have to seek help to enable him to erect church1 school1 convent and parsonage and to provide himself with a means of livelihood40 ,,natchitoches1 ,,la4 ,the colored ,catholics of this diocese number #ae1jjj1 or about half the total ,catholic population4 ,bishop ,durrier is doing his utmost to extend the work of ,catholic education4 ,the six schools within his diocese have been founded through aid granted him by the ,commission4 ,in a letter forwarded to the ,commission the bishop writes3 8,i ask for the same allocation as that granted me last year1 #bjjj4 ,this year ,i did not succeed in doing for ,catholic education all that ,i wished4 ,i hope to do better the coming year4 ,i have re-opened the school at ,bayou ,wallace which we were forced to close last year4 ,the prospects of the work hardly show a bright spot2 yet the work can stand on the principle1 that the salvation of a single soul is worth both any amount of money and any amount of labor4 ,the work will keep going on4 ,i have no special observation to submit to the ,commission4 ,i simply surmise that in the fight for the ,catholic education of the colored people1 the ,commission ought to give the honors of war1 even to those who come out from the battle field badly beaten1 provided they #8never despair of the ,republic4' ,the progress we have made is not so encouraging as ,i had expected4 ,still1 ,i believe in trying and trying again40 ,this determination to succeed has the true ring to it2 ,bishop ,durrier's motto will always bear him out4 8,what ought to be done1 must and shall be done40 ,,new ,,orleans1 ,,la4 ,the diocese of ,new ,orleans still continues to lead in the work of ,negro education4 ,there are #hj1jjj colored ,catholics in the diocese1 #cf schools open to colored children1 a large orphan asylum and a home for aged women4 ,the schools are attended by over #bcji pupils4 ,two or three extra schools are opened each year4 ,archbishop ,janssens feels confident of the future good results to come from his labor1 in multiplying these colored schools4 ,his pithy letter is extremely interesting4 8,this year ,i notice a decrease in infant baptisms4 ,one year there are more1 another less4 ,an average of a certain number of years would enable us to draw a conclusion either one way or the other4 ,during the last year our schools have been increased by four new ones while we note an increased attendance of #djd pupils4 ,this is a consoling item4 ,there is a strong desire on the part of both priests and sisters to perform their full duty towards colored schools4 ,in many of our parishes the priests are anxious to open schools1 but the poverty of the parishes does not allow it4 ,if we had #bj1jjj to spend on this item alone1 it would not be adequate1 by any means1 to present and pressing wants4 ,however1 we are making arrangements to open three schools1 two of which will draw a very large number of pupils1 they being situated in parishes largely made up of colored people4 ,we have two churches especially for colored people4 ,one of these1 at ,petite ,prairie1 has long since existed but ,i was not aware of it1 until ,i made a visit there last year4 ,one new ,orphan ,asylum is so far finished that we have been able to transfer our orphan girls there4 ,it has cost #af1gdg1 on which is a debt of #djjj4 ,god's ,providence has visibly assisted us in this work4 ,when the debt is paid1 we will furnish it according to plan1 thus entailing a cost of #hjjj more4 ,it is of brick1 simple but beautiful style1 strongly constructed1 well ventilated1 with a capacity for #aej orphans4 ,this ,asylum1 more than anything else1 has lifted up our colored population in the city4 ,they feel grateful to the ,church for it4 ,at the laying of the corner stone1 the different colored societies paraded and there were about #gjjj colored people in and around the premises1 besides many whites4 ,the old ,asylum has been fitted up at an expense of #abjj1 7no debt7 and our aged colored women have it for a home4 ,it is able to accommodate about fifty people4 ,the year #ahia1 has been remarkable in the history of the ,church's progress in this diocese1 both for white and colored ,catholics4 ,deo ,gratias4 8,last ,september ,i made a pastoral visit to the chapel at ,petite ,prairie4 ,the road leads through swamps and is abominable in bad weather4 ,we were favored by a clear sky4 ,thirty colored cavaliers came to meet us1 to conduct us to the chapel1 an old store1 in a rather dilapidated condition4 ,the chapel was full to overflowing and the people delighted4 ,i confirmed sixty-nine colored people4 ,this is an exclusively colored settlement1 most of its inhabitants being free-men before the war4 ,they are industrious1 intelligent and very much devoted to the church and religion4 ,here there are about #ejj ,catholics1 but owing to the distance from the church and the many be brick-veneered4 ,an addition ought to be built to this church and also a school house constructed1 at least1 in course of time4 ,the ,government does not help in the least2 on the contrary1 these 7,oneidas7 ,indians having been ,protestants before1 made all difficulties possible4 ,the ,rector of ,freedom ,congregation1 heretofore attending to the ,oneida ,mission1 is hardly able to do so any longer1 as his congregation claims all his time1 and he is certainly unable to do full justice to the enterprise of converting many more ,oneidas4 ,wherefore it is absolutely necessary that a priest be given to the ,oneidas1 having care of them alone4 ,such a priest would1 without the least doubt1 convert many1 for the ,oneida ,indians are favorably impressed with the ,catholic ,religion40 ,,helena1 ,,mont4 ,there are twelve churches for ,indians in this diocese1 and sixteen ,indian ,schools with #icj pupils enrolled4 ,the ,ursulines have a mother-house located in the diocese as well as a novitiate4 ,they devote themselves entirely to the education of the ,indians of the different missions4 8,i will be called upon to pay for the debt of the ,indian school and novitiate and mother-house of the ,ursulines0 writes ,bishop ,brondel4 8,these nuns were living for seven years in small log cabins and now they have a decent building considerably in debt4 ,two or three thousand dollars would help considerably40 ,,idaho4 ,eleven hundred ,catholic ,indians are to be found in ,idaho1 four churches and three boarding schools have been erected for them4 8,our ,indian ,missions continue to be prosperous0 writes ,bishop ,glorieux4 8,last ,june ,i visited the ,coeur d',alnes1 at ,de ,smet1 the ,nez ,percs1 at ,lapnai and the ,kootenais1 near ,bonner's ,ferry1 in the northern part4 ,the magnificent reception they gave me as well as their piety1 showed that their faith is still lively4 ,all the ,coeur d',alnes and the ,kootenais are practical ,catholics4 ,about one-fifth of the ,nez ,percs1 viz41 #cjj are ,catholics1 nearly all of whom are practical ones4 ,many of the ,shoshones and ,bannocks in the south-eastern part of ,idaho were baptized about twenty-five years ago1 but owing to the ,government policy1 the missionaries could not visit them for a long time1 and consequently1 they have given up their religion4 ,the ,lemhis in the eastern part have never been visited1 to my knowledge4 ,they number nearly #ejj4 ,lack of priests and funds is the principal cause of this neglect4 ,i hope that in a short time ,i will be able to do something for them40 ,,indian ,,territory4 ,the ,indian ,territory is a great ,indian centre1 there being no less than #if1fdj ,indians within its borders4 ,of this great number but #cjjj are ,catholics4 ,these ,catholic ,indians have six churches which are regularly attended by six ,benedictine ,fathers1 of the ,sacred ,heart1 and one secular priest4 ,there are five ,catholic ,indian boarding schools in the ,territory with an enrolment of #bfb pupils4 8,a school should be built in the ,gwokow nation0 writes ,bishop ,meerschaert1 8for that nation and other small tribes around4 ,a church there is an absolute necessity4 ,another school should be built in the ,creek nation4 ,we will try a day school in ,muscogee where we can build and be able to have sisters4 ,the trouble is that day schools with our ,indians are impossibilities4 ,we have to clothe the children1 board them and teach them4 ,when our schools are built1 if we could have all the children we could accommodate it would be all right1 but the ,morgan system is there to destroy all4 ,he has been a perfect scourge for our ,indians-- refusing contracts1 diminishing them1 building other ,government schools at the expense of the ,indians1 where ,catholic schools already existed1 and this in order to destroy and ruin them4 ,the ,priest of ,muscogee ,creek ,nation attempts to visit nineteen places4 ,he writes that two priests more are needed there and they must be supported1 as no help comes from the ,indians4 ,i will try to get priests to work for that mission and for many others among the whites in the ,oklahoma ,territory4 ,these ,i will have to procure in ,europe1 as ,i cannot find them here4 ,hence1 more expense4 ,this country is being populated rapidly4 ,everywhere new settlements are springing up and towns and cities are developing4 ,these towns and cities are anxious to have churches and schools4 ,as yet there is little money and most is expected from the priest4 ,protestant associations are building handsome churches everywhere and keeping our work back where we cannot build4 ,notwithstanding our poverty several new churches have been built this year1 thanks to the great efforts and self-sacrifice of the priests on the ,missions4 ,their mass intentions and every cent they can get go to the good work4 ,they live very poorly in order to be able to do the work4 ,they are indeed hard workers and good1 pious and zealous priests4 ,the ,propagation allowance is #b1hig4gb4 ,about #cjjj below the sum given to me in former years4 ,as the funds of last year were exhausted before my arrival1 except #dej1 ,i had to use most of the present years' allowance for the improvements and work of the vicariate4 ,as regards the ,indian work2 ,i have opened a new mission among the ,creeks1 the ,guokows and other surrounding tribes4 ,i have to build a church and school for the ,guokows1 and must help the ,creek nation to do the same4 ,i hope the ,commission will help us in our poverty1 for the money will be well spent in this large territory1 the home of nearly #ajj1jjj ,indians1 and will do a great deal of good4 ,i beg ,god that ,i may find self-sacrificing priests and means to do our work4 ,much good might be done here in a short time if priests and sufficient means could be had4 ,all the priests in charge of the missions work most faithfully and cheerfully1 notwithstanding all manner of hardships4 ,i enclose a check for #eb4ij1 the full amount of the collection taken up for ,negroes and ,indians4 ,the amount is small1 but it is the first collection ever taken up for that purpose1 ,i think4 ,and as it is an expression of the good will of our poor people1 may our dear ,lord accept their good will and give them an abundance out of which to contribute in the years to come4 ,we cannot expect all the means actually needed here in a new country like this1 where everything is wanting and resources few-- yet with a little1 much can be done40 ,,la ,,crosse1 ,,wis4 ,there are #ahjj ,catholic ,indians in this diocese out of an ,indian population of #cejj4 ,these ,catholic ,indians have nine churches visited regularly by three priests of the ,order of ,st4 ,francis4 ,four large schools1 attended by #caf ,indian children are in good running order1 under the direction of ,franciscan ,sisters4 ,these schools were materially assisted by last years allocation4 ,,marquette4 ,about #bgjj ,catholic ,indians dwell in this diocese1 over half of the resident ,indian population4 ,they have five churches and one school4 ,the churches are visited by two ,jesuit ,fathers and the school is conducted by the ,sisters of ,st4 ,joseph4 ,the ,missions and the priests attending them were helped by the ,negro and ,indian ,commission at the last yearly distribution4 ,,natchez1 ,,miss4 ,bishop ,heslin1 of ,natchez1 has four hundred ,catholic ,indians in his diocese4 ,they have one church and one school4 8,the number of ,catholic ,indians in ,neshoba ,co41 has now increased to #cce1 a considerable gain over last year4 ,rev4 ,b4 ,j4 ,bekkers1 with money lately collected from friends in ,holland1 has made a further purchase of some #fjj acres to be portioned out among the ,indians according to necessity4 ,he reports the ,indians are very much distressed in consequence of the low prices obtained for their crops1 which were chiefly cotton4 ,he cannot tell how they will be able to tide over the time lapsing before the new crops4 ,the poor people have no credit1 and they are now left dependent on ,divine ,providence4 ,i must confess that ,i am comparatively ignorant of the other ,indian ,colony situated back of the coast2 but ,i expect before long to get better acquainted with them1 and to be able to give a more accurate account of them4 ,a great deal has been said about the efforts made1 and the aid given by the ,indian ,bureau and by ,mother ,catherine ,drexel1 in behalf of the ,indians1 but we have as yet seen nothing of them in ,mississippi40 ,,nesqually4 ,this diocese has quite a large ,indian population1 there being no less than #ah1jjj within its limits4 ,about #f1jjj of these are ,catholics4 ,seven ,jesuit ,fathers are here engaged in ,indian missionary work while three diocesan priests visit the missions when opportunity affords4 ,there are seventeen churches exclusively for the ,indians1 while four schools conducted by the ,sisters of ,providence look to the instruction of the ,indian children4 8,we could have a great many more children at school10 writes ,bishop ,junger4 8,about three weeks ago eighteen children were brought to ,yakima to go to school1 but they were not received as there is no room there1 and besides the ,sisters of ,providence have a great number above their contract4 ,the same may be said in regard to the school at ,blanket and ,puyallup4 ,then there are several tribes which would willingly accept the teachings of the ,church1 but missionaries and priests are wanting4 ,in my last report ,i mentioned that the diocese of ,nesqually does not receive an allocation in proportion to other dioceses1 concerning schools1 missionaries and churches4 ,i would not reiterate this remark1 and it is against my feelings that ,i do it again2 but ,i think my conscience obliges me to do so4 ,neither do ,i begrudge the other dioceses what they receive4 ,in the pamphlet1 #8,mission ,work among the ,negroes and ,indians1' which was sent me a short time ago1 ,i see on page #ba1 under the heading #8,indian ,mission ,work1' that ,nesqually is not fairly represented in regard to priests and pupils1 and especially in regard to the latter4 ,there are only #aej pupils mentioned1 whilst if you count them up in my report you will find nearly #djj1 and this year there are about #dej40 ,,oregon ,,city4 ,two thousand1 five hundred ,indians dwell in this diocese4 ,eighteen hundred of them are ,catholics4 ,two priests attend the two churches erected for the ,catholic ,indians4 ,the two ,indian schools1 one of which is taught by the ,benedictine ,sisters1 report an enrollment of #aia pupils4 8,besides the current expenses10 writes ,archbishop ,gross1 8,i should like about two or three hundred dollars to erect a modest chapel on the site selected by me recently at the ,silety reservation4 ,i should also like some additional donations for the ,franciscan ,sisters for their school at the ,umatilla reservation4 ,in giving my report1 ,i must state that the ,klamath ,indians are large in numbers1 and many of them are ,catholics4 ,the reservation is in the hands of ,methodists4 ,i made an ineffectual attempt to visit them some time ago4 ,the next dry season ,i shall go again and preach there1 whether the government agent likes it or not4 ,i shall the next time not allow myself to be kept off the reservation4 ,there is a government school for the ,indians near ,salem1 but so far completely in the hands of the ,protestants4 ,i paid a most interesting visit to the ,silety4 ,these poor ,indians had been handed over to the ,methodists by ,general ,grant1 and the ,catholic priests were ordered to remain away from the ,silety reservation4 ,i went there uninvited this summer and spent quite a time among them4 ,i was astonished to see how many had preserved the faith4 ,nearly all of them came to confession4 ,i administered ,confirmation to a large number4 ,i am not quite sure as to the number of ,indians in this diocese4 ,for fear of exaggerating1 ,i have placed in my report a total1 which ,i believe to be in reality less than the true number40 ,,st4 ,,cloud4 ,we present an interesting letter from the ,mother ,superior of the ,sacred ,heart ,industrial ,school1 at ,morris1 ,minn4 8,i would have replied long since in answer to your kind letter1 but ,i met with a very severe accident1 a dislocation of my right shoulder1 and ,i am not well yet4 ,i can use only my thumb and first finger4 ,god grant that ,i may get the use of the others1 for it is a great loss to the poor children that ,i cannot work4 ,i am anxiously looking forward to ,september1 and ,i trust what our good ,bishop ,zardetti asked for us will be granted4 ,having lost all our crops by hail and having had to build an addition to our building by order of the ,government1 or lose our children2 we are greatly in need4 ,we had to mortgage cattle1 sheep and horses4 ,had ,i not promised to pay in ,september we would have lost all4 ,what we get from the ,government1 #i per month for the support1 clothing1 teaching and travelling expenses of each pupil1 falls far short of the actual expense4 ,for this reason we try to raise all we can4 ,if we secure what we expect all our difficulties will be over in regard to the ,industrial ,school1 as it will be self-supporting4 ,we are teaching the girls all kinds of work4 ,they make their own clothes as well as those of the boys4 ,they knit1 spin and weave4 ,we are now teaching them to do store work2 so that if any remain with us off the reservation they will be able to support themselves4 ,we are aiming at the plan of the ,industrial ,school at our convent in ,brooklyn1 which ,i organized some years ago4 ,if we can induce the parents of the children to let the latter remain with us when their schooling is finished1 it will be1 in our opinion1 the best method of civilizing them4 ,oh1 if we could but have help1 how much good we could do for the glory of ,god and the salvation of these dear souls6444 ,we are praying ,god to help us now in our struggles and if the ,commission will grant what is asked this year1 we will not apply again4 ,we are insuring our crops this year for fear of hail and storms40 ,bishop ,zardetti1 of ,st4 ,cloud1 endorses the foregoing letter in these words1 8,i remit to you the enclosed petition1 endorsing it from my heart4 ,the #h1jjj ,catholic ,indians in his diocese4 ,the total ,indian population aggregates #be1jjj4 ,there are #ah churches and #aa schools in the diocese exclusively for ,indians4 ,these schools have an enrollment of #dcc pupils4 ,three priests devote nearly their whole time to ,indian missionary work4 8,we intend to carry out our school work on a better plan10 writes the ,most ,rev4 ,archbishop4 8,the agents of ,commissioner ,morgan are doing all in their power to ruin our schools and to pervert our poor ,catholic ,indians1 by means fair and foul4 ,their efforts are especially directed against the faith and ,catholic allegiance of the ,pueblos4 ,if we could maintain our schools and especially if we had the necessary means to maintain two more missionaries to attend the ,pueblos of ,santa ,jamingo1 ,saguna1 ,acoma and ,zuni1 we could arrive at splendid results1 because those ,indians are better affected now towards the ,church1 than they have been in years past4 ,moreover the several thousand ,navajoes 7the tribe numbers over #bj1jjj1 most of whom reside in this archdiocese17 are in sad need of missionaries1 since the ,gospel has never been preached to them4 ,they need schools1 as we have absolutely none for them4 ,they are intelligent1 and doubtless1 many of them would be won over easily to ,catholicity40 ,bishop ,chapelle of the same diocese writes 8,i trust that the amount asked for in the names of the ,most ,rev4 ,archbishop and my own1 will be allowed us4 ,our ,indians are very poor indeed and the resources of the archdiocese1 ,i may say1 are nil1 for the work of evangelizing these poor people40 ,,san ,,francisco1 ,,cal4 ,this diocese contains #aejj ,indians1 #hjj of whom are ,catholics4 ,there are two ,churches and four schools for these ,catholic ,indians4 ,both schools and churches are in charge of the ,franciscans4 ,,sioux ,,falls1 ,s4 ,d4 ,there is a large ,indian population in the two ,dakotas4 ,in the diocese of ,sioux ,falls there are over #be1jjj4 ,of these1 #e1djj are members of the church4 ,ten churches are open to them4 ,these are under the charge of seven ,benedictine and six ,jesuit ,fathers4 ,the schools1 twelve in number1 with an enrollment of #ich pupils1 are directed by the above mentioned fathers4 8,the year has been a most prosperous one10 writes ,bishop ,marty1 8both in conversions and in the formation of new ,catholic centres among the ,sioux4 ,especially at the ,standing ,rock1 ,cheyenne and ,rosebud ,agencies4 ,a beautiful new church and parochial residence has been built at ,cheyenne ,agency1 and was dedicated1 ,july #crd1 on the occasion of the ,catholic ,congress4 ,on the #aith the church was blown down and the house partly destroyed by a cyclone4 ,only #ej per cent4 of the lumber can be used again for building4 ,five petitions were presented for new churches on the different reservations4 ,each of these churches would cost one thousand dollars1 as building material1 as well as labor1 is dear at a distance of fifty miles from railroad or river4 ,there is no building material on the prairie4 ,i also have to maintain the missionaries at ,grand ,river and ,cheyenne40 ,,vancouver ,,island1 ,,alaska ,,missions4 ,there are about #ce1jjj ,indians on ,vancouver ,island and in ,alaska4 ,only #djjj of these are ,catholics4 ,these ,indians have thirteen churches and seven schools open to them4 ,some idea may be had of the extent of the territory within which the ,indian ,missions are comprised1 when we reflect on the vast area1 7#eic1jjj square miles7 which is included within its limits4 ,fourteen zealous priests are here engaged in missionary work4 ,according to ,bishop ,lemmens the prospects for the future are bright4 8,we have good hopes that all the ,indians on the ,west ,coast will ultimately be ,catholics2 the majority are so now4 ,the ,missions on the ,yukon ,river and in the south-west of ,alaska are very successful4 ,in all this diocese there are only four churches1 in which it is possible to take up a regular ,sunday collection4 ,the ,cathedral is the only church which brings in any pew rent4 ,all the churches1 except four1 have to be entirely supported from the general funds of the diocese40 ,with the ,alaska missions of the diocese of ,vancouver ,island we bring our report to a close4 ,the foregoing reports from the ,bishops of the ,south and ,northwest speak louder than comment on them4 ,the ,negroes and ,indians stand in need of priests1 of churches and of schools4 ,much good could be done among them if the men and the means were available4 ,a rich field is here open to zealous missionaries1 and to the charitably disposed4 ,let all praise be meted out to the noble few1 both priests and sisters1 who have consented to consecrate their lives to this laudable work4 ,may heaven continue to bless their labors and to furnish them the meagre pittance of which they stand so sorely in need4
