but the pleasure of recognizing images mentally familiar or readily suggested--personalities1 incidents1 scenes--irrespective of any sensuous gratification from artistic qualities of presentation1 of design1 of composition6 ,how few1 in short1 appreciate the distinction between illustration that is merely reproductive and illustration that is both interpretative and decorative6 ,this appreciation is certainly on the increase1 but1 much as the artists and the makers of books are doing to stimulate it1 much remains to do4 ,the appeal of the picture-book is universal2 but the ,book ,beautiful1 in which the printed text and the illustrative scheme are conceived as a decorative whole1 is as yet a rare thing4 ,how much our joy in a book may be enhanced by pictorial embellishment must depend1 of course1 upon our individual conception of illustration in relation to the permanent elements of pictorial art4 ,that most human of book-lovers1 ,charles ,lamb1 admitted that he preferred to read ,shakespeare1 not in the ,first ,folio1 but in the common editions with plates so execrably bad that they served as maps1 or modest remembrancers1 to the text without pretending any supposable emulation with it4 ,but we must remember that ,boydell's ,shakespeare ,gallery engravings were then the example--the awful example1 one might say--of the highest illustration of the poet1 ,sir ,john ,gilbert's vigorous dramatic illustrative designs being1 of course1 of much later date4 ,perhaps few of us would not have agreed with ,lamb in his day4 ,in our own day1 however1 we have come to look in book-illustration for something more than 8maps1 or modest remembrancers1 to the text40 ,we are coming1 in fact1 if we have not already come1 to demand of illustration that it shall not merely interpret for us the literary idea1 or the mental image suggested by it1 but that it shall do this with decorative effect--that it shall take its place upon the page with charm1 dignity1 and beauty4 ,we are thus aiming at a higher standard of artistic book-illustration1 which certain modern tendencies and achievements1 as well as certain wider developments in the crafts of reproduction1 have enabled us to conceive4 ,i do not pretend1 of course1 that in all of the great mass of book-illustration to-day there is any attempt to conform to this artistic standard--though the general average is higher4 ,let us therefore be clear as to what we mean by artistic illustration4 ,to be regarded as a work of art1 ,i take it1 any graphic illustration must be composed of intrinsic decorative elements2 its pictorial expression of the visualized idea must be controlled by such qualities1 with harmonious balance1 of form and tone as could in themselves give satisfaction as design or pattern apart from any question of literary or dramatic significance4 ,when the expressive elements are perfectly fused with the decorative1 then we get great illustration which may outlive all changes and fashions of taste4 ,thus1 if we look with a sense of pictorial art at ,william ,blake's illustrations to the ,book of ,job or his own poems1 at the noble woodcut designs of ,millais1 ,sandys1 ,boyd ,houghton1 and the other great illustrators of the 8sixties10 or at ,aubrey ,beardsley's 8,rape of the ,lock0 designs1 we shall see why all these illustrations are likely to live for their own sakes as works of art1 and we shall gather confidence in the permanent artistic value of not a little of the book-illustration being done to-day4 ,we shall also understand why so much of the popular illustration of the period immediately preceding the 8sixties0 has died with the literature that called it forth2 why even the immortal 8,phiz0 lives artistically chiefly because the types and episodes he made visually familiar to us have long been absorbed in our popular memories2 why even the great ,george ,cruikshank1 with his infinity of illustrative invention and wit1 his enormous range and facility of graphic expression1 yet with his passion for significant detail uncontrolled by the decorative instinct1 seems quite old-fashioned--old-fashioned as no drawing of ,charles ,keene's1 whatever contemporary phase of life it presented1 could ever become4 ,the art of book-illustration in ,england has been of slow growth1 and till recent times its development has been sporadic4 ,this has depended largely on the mediums of reproduction which happened to be ready to the designer's hand1 although on occasion men of genius1 such as ,blake and ,bewick1 have found for themselves the means for their pictorial needs1 and have incidentally enriched the method's possibilities4 ,english book-illustration can scarcely be said to have had any distinctive existence before the eighteenth century1 although the earliest printed books had pictorial woodcuts upon their pages4 ,these were of a more or less primitive character1 and bore little illustrative relation to the literary text1 being frequently of foreign origin and serving again and again for various books4 ,the printers would seem to have used them without any definitely decorative or illustrative intention1 and1 as a matter of fact1 in the ,england of ,caxton's day1 and for some decades later1 the graphic arts were not in a condition to offer much to the service of the new art of printing4 ,native design had little artistic significance1 and ,english wood-engraving was still in the crudest state1 even at a time when in ,germany ,drer1 ,burgkmair1 ,lucas ,cranach1 and ,holbein were using the woodcut for imperishable illustration--imperishable because of its intrinsic artistic qualities4 ,when1 in the middle of the sixteenth century1 copper-plate engraving was belatedly introduced into this country it was soon employed to add to the attractiveness of the printed book4 ,indeed1 it is in the books of the period that we must in a great measure trace the progress of the engraver's art in ,england1 though the illustrator's was still largely to seek4 ,few books of any importance in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were published without an engraved title-page or frontispiece1 or both1 ornately designed1 often with the author's portrait set amid allegorical or symbolic suggestions of the book's contents4 ,many of these pictorial title-pages and frontispieces have a quaint artistic charm1 though their significance is for the most part literary and fantastic4 ,occasionally1 as in the case of ,elstrack's ponderous frontispiece to ,sir ,walter ,raleigh's 8,history of the ,world10 we find the author thinking it necessary to explain 8,the ,minde of the ,front10 but1 as the engravers' names only appeared on the plates1 we must suppose them to have been also the designers1 and so we may associate with the beginnings of book-illustration in this country the names of ,william ,hole1 ,john ,payne1 ,william ,marshall1 ,robert ,vaughan1 and others of the early line-engravers4 ,but illustration in any modern acceptance of the term was not to be found in the books of the seventeenth century1 although occasionally among the pages would appear plates of a pictorial character4 ,the eighteenth century1 however1 saw a notable activity in the illustrating of books1 dating from the publication in #agbf of ,hogarth's plates to ,butler's 8,hudibras40 ,but perhaps the greatest stimulus to the still groping art was the influence of the charming and fertile ,french illustrator ,gravelot1 who lived and worked in ,london for some twenty years in the first half of the century4 ,his influence1 sadly needed at this time1 was in the direction of grace and delicacy in visualizing the mental image1 and of the many ,english artists of the period who addressed themselves to book-illustration none equalled the prolific ,thomas ,stothard in the display of these qualities4 ,the designs that ,stothard made in the course of his long career are practically countless1 and1 with much work that was feeble or merely pretty1 at his best1 as when illustrating the novels of ,richardson1 ,sterne1 and ,goldsmith1 and certain poems of ,samuel ,rogers1 his graphic fancy would translate the author's conceptions with sympathy into pictorial terms of grace and persuasion4 ,and the daintiness of his design would lend itself as readily to stipple-engraving as to line4 ,stothard's is one of the few outstanding names in eighteenth-century book-illustration2 another is ,flaxman's1 with his outline designs for ,homer1 schylus1 and ,dante2 but in the whole history of the art no name shines more brilliantly than that of their great contemporary1 ,william ,blake4 ,with that sublime and original genius1 it may be said1 ,english printed book-illustration came into being in its ideal condition as a work of art4 ,before ,blake produced his entrancing 8,songs of ,innocence0 in #aghg nobody had conceived the printed page as an harmonious combination of text1 illustration1 and decoration1 an ideal of beautiful book-making that has proved the inspiration of some of our best modern artists4 ,so we may call ,blake the first great ,english book-illustrator4 ,never were expression and decoration more perfectly blended than in those pages of ,blake's1 all smelling of ,april1 as ,swinburne happily phrased it1 with their script and their illustrative designs1 in decorative setting1 printed in tinted inks from plates etched in relief after a method of his own devising1 and their exquisite colour-harmonies built up by hand upon the impressions4 ,that ,blake's example was not followed in those days of the popularity of the stippled colour-print is surprising1 although it would have argued an artistic sense of book-decoration that was in ,blake's day1 and for long afterwards1 extremely rare1 if not almost non-existent4 ,but absolutely unique and original as was ,blake's genius1 and slow as was his influence1 we can trace in later book-illustration1 especially in some of to-day's1 something of the influence not only of his colour-books but of his nobly beautiful illustrations to the ,book of ,job and ,blair's 8,grave10 and of those wonderful little woodcut designs for ,philips's 8,pastorals10 in which he extended the capacity of the wood-engraver's art for the suggestion of colour1 showing how far more pliable it may be in the hands of the artist who cuts his own designs and gives his imagination play upon the block4 ,it was through the wood-engraver's art1 too1 that1 contemporary with ,blake1 yet beginning earlier than he to handle the block1 another man of genius stamped himself on the history of ,english book-illustration1 and exerted an extraordinary influence4 ,indeed1 in the hands of ,thomas ,bewick the craft of wood-engraving awakened from a moribund condition to new life1 invigorated by his revival of the 8white line10 used in a pictorial way of his own1 to serve the illustrator's art through many a year and one glorious decade1 while ,bewick's inimitable vignettes and tail-pieces gave ,english book-illustration fresh inspiration in the direction of original fancy4 ,and ,bewick's influence was splendidly transmitted through his gifted disciples and followers1 ,luke ,clennell1 ,william ,harvey1 and ,w4 ,j4 ,linton4 ,but book-illustration about the end of the eighteenth century and the earlier years of the nineteenth had at its service reproductive methods other than wood-engraving and the graven line4 ,innumerable books were published with pictorial plates in coloured aquatint and etched outlines1 for the most part of merely topographical interest1 and therefore scarcely illustrations in the strictly artistic acceptance of the term2 yet it was through this medium that the illustrative genius of ,rowlandson was reproduced4 ,notably in his famous 8,tours of ,dr4 ,syntax10 he represented a phase of book-illustration the influence of which in more recent times we may trace in the delightful work of ,randolph ,caldecott4 ,one does not think of ,turner strictly as an illustrator1 although countless books were 8embellished0 with his exquisite landscape drawings and vignettes1 translated to a nicety of reproductive art by a remarkable school of line-engravers on copper and steel1 trained by the great artist himself to mix the etched with the graven line in a manner never previously imagined4 ,glorious as he was in interpreting his own visions1 when ,turner set himself to illustrate another man's poems1 such as ,campbell's 8,lord ,ullin's ,daughter10 or 8,the ,soldier's ,dream10 or 8,the ,last ,man10 one can hardly regard his vignettes as impressive illustration4 ,but the ,turner-illustrated book loomed large in its day1 and that was not yet the day of any distinguished ideal of interpretative and decorative illustration1 ,blake's remaining still unique4 ,however1 amid an active period of book-illustration in which the dominant idea was vivacious1 scenic1 and characteristic representation1 with the decorative instinct largely to seek1 if not practically absent1 began suddenly the great period which we know as 8the sixties40 ,its opening was marked by ,moxon's publication in #aheg of an edition of ,tennyson's ,poems4 ,there was no attempt to make a beautiful book of it2 the format1 the type1 the paper1 the binding1 were all quite ordinary2 but among the illustrations happened to be masterpieces4 ,for among the noted artists engaged upon the work--including ,mulready and ,clarkson ,stanfield--were three young men who proved to be great illustrators1 and these1 by their wonderful designs for this volume1 drawn direct upon the wood-blocks for facsimile engraving1 initiated a movement that is remarkable in the history of ,british ,art4 ,millais1 ,rossetti1 and ,holman ,hunt brought to their task all the romantic and decorative pictorial ideals of their ,pre-,raphaelite ,brotherhood1 and no more inspiring matter than ,tennyson's early poems could have been illustrated by such artists with such ideals4 ,no sooner was it seen that1 in the hands of such contemporary reproductive engravers as the ,dalziels1 ,swain1 ,hooper1 and ,linton1 the wood-block could offer opportunities to the graphic artist such as it had not offered since the age of ,drer1 than most of the leading painters of the more imaginative order turned to it as a medium for expression4 ,book after book and magazine after magazine issued from the press with illustrations which were remarkable for fine expressive significance1 true interpretative vision1 and decorative beauty--designs1 in fact1 which created a new tradition in ,english book-illustration4 ,to attempt any enumeration of these books and magazines of that amazing period1 in which one may find masterpieces that would adorn the reputations of the greatest masters of design1 were beyond the scope of this article4 ,there was no attempt to make the books beautiful in themselves1 with artistic relation between type and illustration1 and harmonious decoration of the page2 the designs held in themselves all that the books offered in the way of adornment4 ,it must therefore suffice here to call to memory just the most individual and important of the artists whose work in line upon the wood-block made the years1 roughly speaking1 between #ahfj and #ahgj so gloriously memorable4 ,who shall say that ,john ,everett ,millais showed himself a greater artist in his paintings than he did in his black-and-white designs for 8,the ,parables of ,our ,lord0--superb things--or his illustrations to ,tennyson's poems and ,anthony ,trollope's novels8 ,with his unfailing gift of vital interpretation1 whether romantic or simply dramatic1 allied to masterly command of design1 he was the ideal illustrator4 ,how splendidly effective1 too1 was the pictorial imagination of ,dante ,gabriel ,rossetti when expressed within the limitations of the decorative line1 enriched with poetic symbol artistically conceived6 ,then there was ,frederick ,sandys1 one of the greatest masters of black-and-white of any time1 and a living influence to-day1 whose noble designs1 with their beauty and dignity of sweeping line and perfect balance of composition1 are instinct with fine dramatic vitality and emotional expression4 ,if the period had been artistically remarkable for nothing else1 it would have been memorable for the gift of ,sandys's designs1 which have surely influenced many later illustrators4 ,much these may owe1 too1 to ,arthur ,boyd ,houghton1 a truly original illustrator1 of the richest imagination when happily inspired by his subject1 as he certainly was in the most extraordinary degree by the stories of the 8,arabian ,nights02 an artist of extremely live and sensitive temperament1 a master of design in which vivacious line and white significant space were balanced with almost magic felicity4 ,two other names that shone with particular lustre in the book-illustration of the 8sixties0 were ,frederick ,walker and ,george ,john ,pinwell4 ,there was an idyllic fragrance about ,walker's work2 the charm of ,pinwell's was its vivid pictorial truth to life1 its dramatic feeling4 ,one must not forget the graces of ,arthur ,hughes's designs1 the tender naturalness of ,birket ,foster's and ,j4 ,w4 ,north's4 ,who would think now of ,whistler as an illustrator of other men's ideas8 ,yet even his original genius lent itself to the prevailing fascination of interpretative vision upon the wood-block4 ,but if we take up any of the illustrated books or periodicals of that period1 especially any issued under the auspices of the ,dalziels1 who did so much to encourage and stimulate the art of illustration1 we shall find famous names attached to designs worth pondering over3 ,leighton1 ,burne-,jones1 ,ford ,madox ,brown1 ,charles ,keene1 ,tenniel1 ,du ,maurier1 ,frederick ,shields1 ,simeon ,solomon1 ,john ,gilbert--all these1 besides those already named1 were expressing their pictorial inventions in line1 and most of them drawing direct upon the wood4 ,a very charming phase of book-illustration followed close upon this great black-and-white period1 and it was a phase of colour4 ,the flat wood-block process was developed by the late ,edmund ,evans1 the colour-printer1 and1 encouraged by him1 three gifted artists of severally distinctive styles exploited its possibilities with distinguished and popular success4 ,randolph ,caldecott1 ,kate ,greenaway1 and ,walter ,crane--their very names call to mind a captivating series of picture-books in which their fancies made dainty frolic and revel for the delight equally of children and grown-ups4 ,with all three the fairy tale and the nursery rhyme found fresh graces of pictorial expression and vivacities of invention1 and the children's picture-book entered upon a new era of artistic refinement and charm4 ,of the veteran ,walter ,crane1 and his influence on the decorative side of book-illustration1 one must speak presently1 for happily he is represented in this volume4 ,of ,randolph ,caldecott and ,kate ,greenaway1 what is there fresh to say in appreciation8 ,who has not laughed and rejoiced over ,caldecott's 8,john ,gilpin0 and his inimitable ,goldsmith and ,washington ,irving illustrations1 with their breezy humour1 their happy1 lively art8 ,is it only the middle-aged children who recall affectionately the dainty pictorial graces of ,kate ,greenaway's world of little people8 ,anyhow1 her very name has become almost established as an adjective4 ,the sweet1 tender simplicity of the colour-schemes of those books of ,caldecott's and ,kate ,greenaway's had an unforgettable fragrance1 and one may feel that without the influence of these artists many of the children's books of to-day might perhaps lack something of their charm4 ,the photographic reproductive processes began now to change the spirit of the illustrator's dream4 ,both in black-and-white and colour the artist had to readjust his methods and adapt them to the new mechanical conditions--to the domination of the camera1 in fact4 ,already the photographer had become an intermediary between the artist and the wood-engraver1 though the designer's lines were still at the mercy of the craftsman's knife4 ,now the artist made his designs with the camera in view1 knowing that his line would reproduce exactly as he drew it4 ,naturally this change had a considerable influence on the character of the designs made for book-illustration4 ,but1 meanwhile1 there were artists1 individual and in groups1 who1 setting themselves against the innovating photographic reproduction in book-illustration1 sought by the older methods to make books beautiful with pictorial adornment4 ,charles ,ricketts and ,charles ,shannon1 two artists inspired always by high ideals1 to whose originality and initiative modern book-decoration owes a great deal1 issued ,the ,dial in #ahhi1 and this was the beginning of an important movement in the making of beautiful books4 ,among the pages ,mr4 ,shannon set those exquisite lithographs of his in which his pictorial poetry is most eloquent2 while from this publication we may perhaps date the modern revival of original wood-engraving--,messrs4 ,ricketts1 ,shannon1 ,sturge ,moore1 ,reginald ,savage1 and ,lucien ,pissarro cutting their lovely designs upon the wood4 ,from the enthusiasm that produced ,the ,dial grew the ,vale ,press1 which1 with its remarkable series of beautiful books1 has given so much joy to bibliophiles1 a joy that ,mr4 ,pissarro continues to give with the delicately lovely books he issues from his ,eragny ,press--the ,vale's successor--books in which the ideal of harmonious decorative relation between the lettering of the page and its pictorial adornment is logically realized with exquisite results4 ,how splendidly this ideal was realized by ,william ,morris in his books from the ,kelmscott ,press has already been shown in 8,the ,art of the ,book0 7the ,special ,spring ,number of ,,the ,,studio1 #aiad72 to speak further of it here were beyond my province4 ,i wish only to suggest its great influence for beauty on the book-decoration of to-day and yesterday1 an influence one would wish to see still more widely extended4 ,a more definite alliance between book-illustration and decoration developed during the nineties of the last century1 and the artistic activities in this direction were of a distinguished and interesting character4 ,several notable artists were at work1 and among them one must not forget ,mr4 ,william ,strang with his illustrative etchings1 for it would be difficult to find a more intuitive pictorial interpreter of ,burns or of ,stevenson4 ,one remembers also the expressively decorative designs of ,mr4 ,laurence ,housman and the graces of the so-called ,birmingham ,school2 above all1 one recalls the appearance of two great original draughtsmen of widely different temperaments1 both masters of line1 both vitally artistic1 both of enduring influence--,phil ,may and ,aubrey ,beardsley4 ,and both of these were content to let their lines speak through the photographic medium4 ,the ,yellow ,book and ,the ,savoy came and passed away1 but they left us ,beardsley1 and with him no fresh pictorial understanding of life and character such as we got from the humanly humorous genius of ,phil ,may1 but a new decorative value of line and the balance of black and white masses4 ,this is ,beardsley's influence1 quite distinct possibly from his fantastic manner of conception1 but it is the secret of the permanent artistic worth of his graphic interpretations of ,oscar ,wilde's 8,salome0 and ,pope's 8,rape of the ,lock40 ,at the present moment book-illustration is in an interesting phase1 with its spreading tendencies towards page-decoration1 and suggestive rather than realistic pictorial treatment of the text4 ,in the following pages a fairly representative selection of drawings will show what many of our leading illustrators have been doing of late4 ,it will be noticed that1 with the clearness and precision possible to the modern photographic process-block1 pure line is favoured for black-and-white2 while recent developments of the three-colour process place within the possibilities of the artist a very wide range of tones and harmonies4 ,indeed1 it would seem that1 however the book-illustrator may wish to vary his manner in sympathy with the character of the text he is illustrating1 the present mediums of reproduction will prove responsive to his need4 ,i have already mentioned ,mr4 ,walter ,crane and the fanciful and decorative charm of his colour-books4 ,it was on the wood-block in the 8sixties0 and 8seventies0 that he began his long and distinguished career as a book-illustrator1 and1 with his delicate feeling for expressive line and the harmoniously decorated page1 he has produced book after book1 in which ,shakespeare or ,spenser1 ,william ,morris1 the beloved ,grimm1 or the anonymous authors of immortal fairy tale and nursery rhyme1 have inspired his graphic fancy to sweet and dainty picturings1 whether in colour or in black-and-white4 ,genuine picture-books his1 with the pictorial adornment extending from end-paper to end-paper1 and the pages bearing their pictures happily balanced with their letterings amid decorative borders4 ,to name even the best of his books would involve quite a long catalogue4 ,turning from the veteran's sweet and gracious simplicity of fancy to the wizardry of ,mr4 ,arthur ,rackham's alertly imaginative art1 with its wide-ranged flights of grotesque or romantic fantasy1 is like going from a field of daisies1 daffodils1 and bluebells into a garden of wonderful exotics4 ,mr4 ,rackham stands apart from all the other illustrators of the day2 his genius is so thoroughly original4 ,scores of others have depicted fairyland and wonderland1 but who else has given us so absolutely individual and persuasively suggestive a vision of their marvels and allurements8 ,whose elves are so elfish1 whose witches and gnomes are so convincingly of their kind1 as ,mr4 ,rackham's8 ,his line1 with its distinctive accent1 is his very own2 so are his colour-tones2 and no little of the secret of his success lies in a subtly harmonious intimacy between design and colour-scheme adapted with peculiarly sympathetic understanding to the capacity and limitations of the photographic mediums of reproduction4 ,in the printed drawings of ,mr4 ,rackham we find the three-colour process never forced1 but always at its best1 and his happily balanced tones seem to suggest the very atmosphere of mystery and enchantment proper to those worlds of romance and fary which this fascinating artist delights to picture4 ,but whether he expresses his visions in colour or black-and-white1 he gives always new meanings to old tales4 ,looking at his drawings1 one feels more at home even in 8,a ,midsummer ,night's ,dream10 one wonders with ,alice afresh and more zestfully1 frolics again with childish seriousness among the fairy tales1 and gives oneself up as readily to the romantic spell of the 8,nibelungen ,ring0 as to the whimsical supernaturalness of the beasts and birds of sop and the nursery rhyme4 ,with all this1 ,mr4 ,rackham's pictorial invention is essentially decorative4 ,a gentle graciousness of line and decorative design1 with simplicity of expression1 constitutes the peculiar charm of ,mr4 ,robert ,anning ,bell's illustrated books4 ,that he finds happy suggestion among the poets will be seen in the drawings representing him here2 but his 8,midsummer ,night's ,dream0 is a book to enjoy in its entirety1 so harmonious is its scheme1 while the ,masque of ,courteous ,monsters in 8,the ,tempest0 is a remarkable composition4 ,the distinguished graphic fancy of ,mr4 ,w4 ,heath ,robinson has also been inspired to beautiful pictorial interpretation by ,shakespeare's immortal fairy play1 and it is interesting to compare his more suggestive treatment with ,mr4 ,anning ,bell's1 the more definitely decorative significance of his design4 ,as a quaintly humorous draughtsman ,mr4 ,heath ,robinson is also represented in these pages4 ,there is no artist now devoting himself to book-decoration who has been truer to the ideals of his art than ,mr4 ,charles ,robinson4 ,from the time when he proved himself the ideal illustrator of ,stevenson's 8,child's ,garden of ,verses0 to the present he has aimed always at treating the book as an harmonious whole from cover to cover1 providing decoration or illustration just where the scheme seemed to call for it4 ,this unity of treatment may be noted particularly in his more recent books1 8,the ,sensitive ,plant10 8,the ,four ,gardens10 8,the ,happy ,prince10 and 8,the ,big ,book of ,nursery ,rhymes40 ,but ,mr4 ,robinson is a man of original if delicate imagination1 as well as an exquisite interpretative artist1 and the double-page drawing given here1 ,the ,dream1 will show him graphically illustrating his own fanciful vision--carrying out his pictorial ideas in a book of his own creation4 8,a ,dream of ,st4 ,nicholas in ,heaven0 is a sort of allegory on the modern aspect of maternity4 ,a wonderful contrast is the robust interpretative imagination of ,mr4 ,edmund ,j4 ,sullivan1 one of the greatest book-illustrators we have ever had1 as he is one of the finest living draughtsmen on the page4 ,his virility of mind and manner have found ,carlyle wonderfully inspiring1 and in the 8,sartor ,resartus0 drawings shown here1 as in the still greater 8,french ,revolution0 series1 his certainty of expressive effect is extraordinary4 ,mr4 ,sullivan's pictorial sense of character and incident is explicit also in the ,goldsmith illustrations4 ,mr4 ,w4 ,russell ,flint1 a very talented designer of rich pictorial imagination and fine colour-sense1 has1 within the last few years1 come into the front rank of book-illustrators1 and he has done this through the medium of a number of beautiful books issued from the ,riccardi ,press4 ,things of real beauty are many of the illustrations to the 8,song of ,solomon10 8,marcus ,aurelius10 8,le ,morte ,d',arthur10 ,kingsley's 8,heroes0 7one of which is reproduced here71 and the 8,canterbury ,tales40 ,mr4 ,flint adapts his expressive style artistically to the varying styles of the books1 and in his colour-schemes he gauges the powers of the reproductive process to a nicety4 ,poetry1 fantasy1 and romance are seen pictorially interpreted here by a group of artists who1 though severally distinctive in conception and manner1 are linked by the common aim of imaginative expression in orderly design for the purpose of page-decoration4 ,perhaps nothing more characteristic of ,mr4 ,edmund ,dulac's graces of invention in design and colour could be shown than the charming frontispiece to his 8,princess ,badoura10 with its engaging orientalism4 ,his versatility is well seen in the ,poe drawings4 ,if ,beardsley ever lent ,miss ,jessie ,king the decorative influence of his line she has made it all her own1 as evidenced in these three exquisite and original designs suggested by old romances4 ,tennyson and ,browning have furnished happy inspirations for the delicate art of ,miss ,eleanor ,fortescue-,brickdale2 while ,mr4 ,dion ,clayton ,calthrop shows with graphic charm how thoroughly he is at home in ,fairyland--being himself the most reliable of guides4 ,mr4 ,maxwell ,armfield has given all lovers of ,hans ,andersen a new joy in his charming coloured illustrations to the immortal stories1 while in his 8,flower ,book0 and 8,sylvia's ,travels0 he shows a fascinating fancy2 but here we see him only in two distinguished little woodcuts4 ,mr4 ,w4 ,graham ,robertson is as delicious as ever in his ,blake-like simplicity of expression and design1 whether illustrating his own books or those of that kindred spirit of fantasy1 ,mr4 ,algernon ,blackwood4 ,mr4 ,byam ,shaw's fecundity of illustrative invention is well represented1 if not the wide range of his fertility1 which is from ,shakespeare and ,boccaccio to ,flora ,annie ,steele in ,akbar's ,india4 ,mr4 ,vernon ,hill is a designer of remarkable imagination1 and he makes an ideal illustrator of 8,ballads ,weird and ,wonderful40 ,imaginatively expressive and decorative1 also1 with the best influences1 perhaps1 of the 8sixties10 are ,mr4 ,gerald ,metcalfe's illustrations to ,coleridge4 ,so1 too1 but in a manner of their own1 are ,mr4 ,harry ,clarke's to the 8,ancient ,mariner0 and ,mr4 ,john ,p4 ,campbell's designs for the 8,celtic ,romances40 ,in this same category we may include the illustrative drawings of ,miss ,dorothy ,payne1 ,mr4 ,harold ,nelson1 ,mr4 ,lee ,hankey1 ,mr4 ,a4 ,garth ,jones1 ,mr4 ,monro ,s4 ,orr1 ,miss ,beatrice ,elvery1 and ,mr4 ,j4 ,d4 ,batten4 ,mr4 ,r4 ,t4 ,rose1 however1 must stand by himself4 ,the three drawings here show his strong individuality1 but ,i wish it had been possible to represent his high-water mark in the beautiful designs for the ,book of ,job4 ,there are no more facile and prolific illustrators than ,mr4 ,hugh ,thomson and ,messrs4 ,c4 ,e4 and ,h4 ,m4 ,brock1 and all of them are most at home in the humours of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries4 ,so we have ,mr4 ,thomson sympathetically illustrating ,jane ,austen and ,mrs4 ,gaskell1 as well as picturesque highways and byways2 while ,mr4 ,c4 ,e4 ,brock shows us what pictorial suggestion he has found in the 8,essays of ,elia10 a subject1 by the way1 that might supply an essay in itself2 and ,mr4 ,h4 ,m4 ,brock's multifarious illustration is represented also by clever designs for essays1 ,leigh ,hunt's and ,douglas ,jerrold's4 ,humorous character1 besides1 we get from ,mr4 ,frank ,reynolds in his vivacious 8,pictures of ,paris10 and his delightful 8,pickwick0 illustration in colour4 ,the animal whimsicalities of ,mr4 ,stewart ,orr1 and ,mr4 ,carton ,moore ,park's decorative suggestions of beast and bird life1 are also illustrative examples we would not be without4 ,the ,irish character-studies of ,mr4 ,jack ,b4 ,yeats have an interest all their own2 they have life and atmosphere4 ,light and atmosphere distinguish ,mr4 ,d4 ,y4 ,cameron's two great little landscape drawings for 8,the ,tomb of ,burns40 ,one does not otherwise think of the great etcher as an illustrator4 ,mr4 ,frank ,brangwyn is entirely himself in the two virile pen-and-ink drawings for 8,the ,book of ,bridges10 and the colour illustration to ,kinglake's 8,ethen40 ,very charming1 and worthy of their theme1 are ,mr4 ,f4 ,l4 ,griggs's illustrations to 8,the ,sensitive ,plant02 nor is this accomplished artist less delightful in his designs for 8,the ,chronicles of a ,cornish ,garden40 ,but1 then1 how could he be with such a title to inspire him8 ,mr4 ,edmund ,h4 ,new is another artist of distinctive style who never fails us1 and in the 8,compleat ,angler0 and ,white's 8,selborne0 he had1 of course1 subjects after his heart4 ,the fanciful landscape is ,mr4 ,w4 ,t4 ,horton's design2 peaceful ,bruges is ,mr4 ,charles ,wade's theme4 ,fitz, gerald's 8,omar0 has suggested some quaintly fantastic designs by ,miss ,helen ,sinclair2 ,mr4 ,ren ,bull's facile pen has busied itself with the 8,arabian ,nights02 while here also are characteristic drawings by ,mr4 ,f4 ,h4 ,ball1 ,mr4 ,keith ,henderson1 ,mr4 ,sydney ,r4 ,jones1 ,mr4 ,donald ,maxwell1
