,,dedicated ,,to ,,his ,,majesty ,,king ,,alfonso ,,xiii4 ,,of ,,spain ,spain is one great open-air museum containing the cultural wealth of the most varied epochs and peoples4 ,on the walls of the ,altamira cave is blazoned that much admired steer painted thousands of years ago by men of the ,ice ,age4 ,in ,barcelona stand the fantastic buildings of neo-,castilian present-day art4 ,celts1 ,iberians1 ,romans1 ,carthaginians1 ,moors and ,goths have fought and struggled for supremacy in ,spain4 ,of all this the stones tell us to-day4 ,they are the chronicles4 ,they relate of bitter strife2 of the culture and art aspirations belonging to times gone by4 ,much has vanished into dust and ruin4 ,that which has survived time's fretting tooth serves as a giant bridge to lead us back to the past4 ,fate was kind enough to let me spend five years in ,spain4 ,caught there by the war while engaged in studies1 ,i was cut off from home4 ,i made use of my involuntary stay to become acquainted with the country in its furthermost corners4 ,i roved to and fro from the pinnacles of the ,pyrenees to the shores of ,tarifa1 from the palm forest of ,elch to the forgotten ,hurdes inhabitants of ,estremadura4 ,on all my lonely wanderings ,i was accompanied by my faithful camera3 we covered over #dejjj kilometres together in ,spain4 ,we kept our eyes open diligently4 ,i say we1 for in addition to mine was a precious glass eye in the shape of the ,zeiss lens4 ,whereas my eyes only made me the intellectual recipient of what we saw1 that of my travelling companion made it a pictorial permanency4 ,i took over #bjjj photographs during our peregrinations4 ,this volume only presents a small selection4 ,it was not easy to make the final choice4 ,many a picture had to be omitted to which ,i was attached1 either for its peculiarity or its character4 ,i went at no one's instigation through ,spain but that of my own in search of the beautiful4 ,i was not guided by any constraining professional principles4 ,beautiful art treasures1 geographical peculiarities1 enchanting landscapes1 interesting customs that attracted my attention were retained by my camera4 ,i followed the same lines in making my selections for publication4 ,i entitle this volume 8,picturesque ,spain4 ,much will be unknown to many4 ,i begin however with a spot famous throughout the world4--,and yet ,i was bound to4 ,like the pilgrim who is drawn to the fabled ,fontana ,trevi once he has drunk of its waters1 so too was ,i drawn again and again to ,granada in my wanderings4 ,i believe too that ,i have succeeded in presenting the ,alhambra from one or two different points of view4 ,who indeed could exhaust this well of beauty8 ,nor could ,i pass heedlessly by ,cordoba1 ,seville and ,toledo1 for these towns are starting points4--,finger-posts to unknown ,spain4 ,without these monuments of ancient times1 those parts of ,spain situate far from the high-roads remain an almost insolvable riddle4 ,my pictures must speak for me4 ,those who know how to ask them will find that they tell much4 ,for this reason ,i shall limit myself to but a few initiatory words4 ,they serve to connect the known with the unknown2 to throw light on the paths along which ,i journeyed in ,spain4 ,granada6 ,thy name is music2 a joyous chord of beauty6 ,to pass the spring within thy gateways is to walk the heights of life4 ,spring has cast a shower of blossoms over the town and woven a delicate green carpet around the ,alhambra4 ,how many many centuries has it not worshipped thus yearly at the feet of the castle8 ,long ago passionate ,moorish women decorated their raven hair there with rosy almond blossoms4--,it is long since that the glory of those days has departed4 ,perhaps this is why the castle walls look down so sadly at the beauty of this blissful vernal soil4 ,bidding defiance in the grandeur of their strength the towers of the ,alhambra arise4 ,their fiery red lights skywards like the flames on giant altars4,a ,is it possible that these massive cyclopean walls should hide a fairy-land8 ,impatiently we climb the castle mount4 ,reaching an old stone gateway ornamented with pomegranates1 the noise of the streets is left behind as we enter a yew grove whose ancient giant stems are ivy-grown2 blue myrtle covers the ground1 the lights gleam golden through the foliage1 the wind murmurs among the branches1 nightingales sing in the boscage1 swallows dart twittering over the tree tops1 water hurries babbling down the hilly slope4 ,all this seems like a miracle in ,spain so poor in forests4 ,it is as though another world had opened its gates4 ,the great ,gate of ,judgment is passed1 and an inconspicuous door leads to the ,court of the ,myrtles4 ,here one feels surrounded by the spirit of the ,orient4 ,delicate jasper and alabaster columns support the airy arches which are swung like lace veils from arcade to arcade4 ,the emerald-green waters of the fountain gaze dreamily skywards and at all the bright beauty of the scene4 ,then there is the ,court of the ,lions1 subject of so many songs1 with the filigreed architecture of its covered walks4 ,enchanting in its delicate tracery and beauty1 it is a fairy-tale1 a poem in stone1 infinitely rhythmic with music4 ,and indeed1 music is the only language that can render such beauty4 ,the magnificent halls are full of a wealth of ornamentation4 ,the walls are rainbow-like with the colours of ,persian carpets and ,cashmere shawls4 ,arabic inscriptions are scrolled along these labyrynths of colour1 praising in exalted words the mystic beauty of the halls4 ,one runs joyously3 8,god has filled me with such a plentitude of beauty that even the stars stay in their course enchanted to gaze on me4 ,once beautiful sultanas looked out from the 8,seat of ,admiration 7as the ,arabs called that jewel of the ,alhambra1 the ,mirador de ,daraca17 into the pretty garden filled with the heavy scent of roses1 jasmines and oleanders4 ,a swaying mass of tangled climbing plants are festooned from laurel to cypress1 and from cypress to orange-tree4 ,in the middle there is a marvellously delicate fountain basin from the edges of which the water slides and drips with tuneful sound as if it fain would tell of long forgotten beauteous days4 ,we leave the glittering fairy-palace full of memories of the ,arabian ,nights1 and our lips whisper the wish of the ,arabic poem writ over a little niche3 8,may ,heaven's blessings rest upon these castle halls ,as long as pilgrims wend their way to ,mecca's walls6 ,nay1 as long as clouds sail the skies1 and seekers after beauty rove on earth6 ,this is the mood one is in when climbing further up the mountain to the ,moorish summer palace1 the ,generalife4 ,we are met1 as it were1 and shown the way by a double row of slim black-green cypress--dark trees of silence4 ,the ,generalife is enthroned far up on the heights1 and embedded in terrace-shaped gardens4 ,the gardens6 ,in them nature has enfolded all her abounding wealth of colour4 ,crimson-ramblers1 wistarias1 vines and ivy smother the walls4 ,mangolias1 oleanders1 almond trees1 laurels1 cypresses1 araucarias1 olive trees1 agaves1 palms and mimosa vie with one another for precedence4 ,flaming pomegranate blossoms1 blood-red roses1 violet mallows1 blue fleurs-de-lis1 white jasmine1 yellow narcissi1 and golden oranges in dark green foliage are a riot of colour4 ,ball shaped myrtles surround the little fountain1 listening to the babbling of its silver waters1 and in the twigs the song of birds greeting nature in her holiday garments4 ,wondrous peace broods o'er this land4 ,through trees and halls and wall arches there is a magnificent view of the ,alhambra and the multi-coloured houses of the town at its feet1 and further on to the picturesque ,albaicin1 and over cactus-grown ,sacromonte with its gypsy cave-dwellings1 and still further to the snow-capped ,sierra ,nevada4 ,another glance shows the fertile plains of the ,vega through which the clear waters of the ,genil flow4 ,however full of radiant happiness the day may have been1 it is outshone by the sinking sun casting a golden halo over the country-side4 ,the walls of the ,alhambra1 once so fiercely fought for1 stand forth as though dipped in blood4 ,the distant mountains glitter golden-bronze1 and the snowy sides of the ,sierra ,nevada scintillate in flames4 ,slowly the fair fires die down1 and a chill spectral white falls upon the snow summits4 ,the eventide is there and with it the stars4 ,the ,spaniards have coined a proud sentence3 8,quien no ha visto ,granada1 no ha visto nada6 ,he who has not seen ,granada has seen nought6 ,and ,i should like to add3 ,he who has seen ,granada and the ,alhambra on sunny spring days1 bears with him a talisman to ward off sorrows in dull days1 and can never be completely unhappy again in life4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the ,mosque1 ,cordova4 ,a nation set forth to convert the world to its faith4 ,its battle-cry in this holy war was ,allah6 ,victory after victory was gained1 till finally the triumphal march of fanaticism was stopped by the opposing faith of its religious adversaries4 ,the waves receded1 and the ,cross triumphed over the ,crescent4 ,this struggle of two faiths and two continents left indelible marks on the fields of battle4 ,these wars had been carried on in the name of ,god4 ,sacred edifices were erected to the victor4 ,on the ruins of the mosque arose the most beautiful cathedral in the world as token of victory4 ,spain never would have received the impress she bears to-day without those bitter religious wars4 ,cordova was the jewel among ,moorish occidental towns1 destined to outshine the sister cities ,damascus and ,bagdad in the far ,orient4 ,it was here that all the wealth and pomp of ,moorish domination was displayed4 ,cordova's population exceeded a million souls4 ,it was the seat of ,arabic art and profound learning2 the centre of religious life4 ,the muezzin called the faithful to prayers from #cjjj minarets4 ,cordova became a new ,mecca which drew crowds of pilgrims from the ,east to the ,west4 ,what has now become of this metropolis8 ,a shadow6 ,wandering through narrow streets of the town one seems to be in ,cordova of a thousand years ago4 ,the old cobbled pavements are probably the same1 the houses too1 behind whose trellised windows the harem was hidden4 ,the old crooked1 narrow and confused mass of streets are still there4 ,once in a while a palm is seen leaning over white walls across the street2 open doors offer views into pleasant court-yards4 ,the ,mezquita1 the ,mosque1 stands like a dark rock surrounded by the white trembling light of the sea of houses4 ,a wonderful gateway leads to the ,orange ,court4 ,the fruit and flowers of these trees perfume the air with incense4 ,high up1 backed by the blue sky1 the palm trees are waving in the wind4 ,fountains are plashing4 ,once they served to refresh burnoosed dusty and foot-sore pilgrims come from afar to serve their ,god here4 ,the faithful bathed in these fountains before purifying their souls in ,allah's house4--,now the fountains are perpetually surrounded by the town maidens who come to fetch a cooling draught in their finely curved earthenware jugs4 ,the impression on entering the forest of columns that support the mosque is both unexpected and overpowering4 ,is this not a petrified palm wood8 ,and does not this stony grove incorporate the conception of infinity8 ,there is a mystic dusk among these columns that lends to them an endless space of silence and eternity3 the symbol of belief4 ,it is to the credit of the victorious ,christians that they did not cool their religious ardour by destroying this ,islamitic place of worship4 ,it is extremely regrettable that their descendants have treated this monument of ,mohammedan culture with such carelessness4 ,the mosque became a ,christian church4 ,where once the cry of 8,allah illah ,allah6 echoed thousandfold1 8,praise be the ,lord6 is now sung4 ,the first deed was to erect altars in the door-niches4 ,then seventy pillars were laid low1 and a choir with the ,high-,altar erected in their stead3 a church within a church4 ,charles ,v4 was reluctant to give his permission for these alterations4 ,when he came to ,cordova and saw what had been done1 he exclaimed in perturbation3 8,what you are building can be seen anywhere4 ,you have destroyed what was unique in the world4,b ,untouched in its pristine beauty1 hidden in semi-darkness1 not far from the ,holy of ,holies of the ,christian church1 stands the ,holy of ,holies of the mosque1 the ,mihrab or prayer-niche in which the ,koran was kept4 ,it is a jewel of ,moorish art4 ,whereas the rest of the mosque columns are connected by double horse-shoe arches1 banded in red and white1 here the beautifully chased dentated arches rise straight to the lovely curved dome4 ,the niche socle is white marble of lace-like texture above which a profusion of colours glow3 blood-red1 rust brown1 dark blue violet interwoven with a sublime sheen of gold4 ,perhaps the mosaic walls and lettered scrolls upon them have in some mystical manner caught the light of the thousand swinging lamps that once had cast their soft rays through the dim shades of space4 ,for six long centuries all these glowing colours were hidden4 ,before ,cordova was surrendered to the ,christians the sanctuary was walled up4 ,it was only discovered in #ahae4 ,we pass entranced along the colonnaded aisles1 enthraled by the wondrous beauty of this miracle in stone4 ,it is like awakening from a fantastic dream to set foot again in the blinding sun of the silent town that has become the shrine of one of the most precious jewels in the world 7#ej-fj74 99 99 99 99 99 ,moorish scenes far from the beaten track3 ,a burning hot day in ,august4--,the air trembles in the heat over the olive trees4 ,the day hangs heavy in the blue vault of heaven4 ,i had been wandering for long long hours1 when all of a sudden my eyes were caught by a fata morgana3 wafted perhaps from the coast of ,morocco8 ,no1 it was no mirage4 ,impossible6 ,yet it did not disappear as ,i approached4 ,strange indeed was the scene3 houses scattered like dice over a mountain 7#ia74 ,a timid lad of whom ,i asked the name of the spot1 slunk shyly past me4 ,my map was of no assistance to me4 ,at last ,i was informed that ,i had arrived at 8la muy noble y bel ciudad ,mochagar1 llave y amparo del reino de ,granada4 8,what1 ,i asked 8this hamlet still calls itself the key and guardian of the kingdom of ,granada8 ,but that kingdom was destroyed half a thousand years ago when the ,moors were driven from ,granada4 ,a miracle must have happened here that time should have remained stationary4 ,here was the pure ,moorish impress4 ,most of the houses are windowless4 ,the flat roofs are sometimes the road to the higher houses1 and always their foot-stool4 ,and although the water of baptism has wetted the women's hair1 they pass veiled in the ,moorish fashion along the streets4 ,with tucked up skirts and naked legs they step lightly along the steep alleys1 returning from the fountains with water amphorae4 ,they eye the foreign trespasser suspiciously and curiously4 ,and when ,i requested the veiled women to let me take their photographs they stared at me1 for they had never even seen a camera4 ,i showed them a picture1 and explained that ,i wanted to have theirs too4 ,they refused4 ,finally one girl agreed4 ,but an old scold hurried up and beat her for her frowardness3 throwing herself away like that6 ,in this ,christian country ,i found shamefacedness and adherence to the laws of ,mohammed4 ,let no mortal body serve as an image6 ,an old man with whom ,i spoke about this incident told me that if a girl no longer veiled her face1 but hid her legs1 there was not much left to spoil about her4 ,but ,i was determined that ,i would not leave without a picture of one of the veiled beauties4 ,at last ,i succeeded1 with the consent of the mother of one of the girls4 ,the eye of my camera winked slyly when ,i took my snap-shot4 ,in thanking the girl1 ,i held out my hand1 but she seemed quite taken aback1 and hid her hands behind her4 ,i pressed her to shake hands4 ,i should not do her any harm4 ,but her mother apologized for her saying3 8,no1 she doesn't mean to be rude1 but it is not the custom in our country for a girl to let a man touch her hand before marriage4 ,perhaps this little incident explains the once much-used expression employed by wooers 8will you give me your daughter's hand8 7#ij7 99 99 99 99 99 ,the ,palm ,forest of ,elch 7#ajj-ajc74 ,the only palm forest in ,europe4 ,it numbers more than #aaejjj trees1 and is also a ,moorish heritage4 ,they caused the water to flow to this spot from a distance of #e kilometres in order to create an oasis here in the desert--for the district is to-day little else4 ,palms must grow with their roots in the water and their crowns in the glaring sun4 ,for years no rain has fallen on this spot4 ,the view is strange from the church-tower down on white houses over which the palm tops are spread like a canopy4 ,beyond the palm forest the grey-yellow desert plain surrounds this isle of peace4 ,in the far distance the blue ocean sleeps in proud majesty4 ,death and life are here in close juxtaposition4 99 99 99 99 99 ,easter in ,seville4 ,the train is rushing southwards over the arid ,castillian high plateaux1 which in summer are as empty as a beggar's palm4 ,the bare treeless ,mancha has put on its modest spring garment which now shows in the distance like delicate green velvet4 ,a short-lived joy6 ,in but a few weeks the scorched ground will again be covered with a yellowish-gray pall4 ,at present the fresh breeze comes down from the mountains of the ,sierra de ,guadarrama4 ,scarcely1 however1 has the train wound its way through the wild caons of the ,sierra ,modena1 when spring opens wide her gate4 ,a warm damp hot-house atmosphere is wafted into the carriage windows4 ,we are soon surrounded by meadows that are like a great flower-garden in which the blood-red poppy and golden-yellow primrose struggle for supremacy4 ,once in a while a village is seen dreaming like ,sleeping ,beauty among the flower groves4 ,for a long stretch agaves and cacti fringe the track4 ,finally ,seville sends forth her messengers in the shape of blossoming rose-gardens and orange groves laden with their ripe golden fruit4 ,an ancient mangolia stretches a rosy blossom branch towards us1 lingering on in its old age in this scene so full of yearning life4 ,tall slim palms nod to us1 and yet new children of ,flora crowd upon us to bring us ,seville and spring's friendly welcome4 ,heedlessly the train clatters past all this beauty towards the white maze of ,seville's houses1 above which towers that beautiful emblem of the town1 the ,giralda4 ,at last the engine snorts noisily into the station4 ,but how different is everything to-day in front of the station4 ,no yelling hotel porters1 no carriages awaiting the passengers1 no electric-car with clanging bell1 no hooting of motor-cars4--,the square is lifeless at this early afternoon hour4 ,it is the 8,semana santa1 ,passion-week1 that has cast this almost oppressive spell of silence over the great city4 ,even the brazen voices of the church-bells are muffled1 as though that had gone into sacred mourning4 ,the wooden banging of the ,matraca calls hoarsely to prayers with dry and unmelodious voice4 ,the further you penetrate into the town1 the more the sacred holiday stillness is ousted4 ,all ,seville is crowding1 chattering and laughing to the ,cathedral to see the procession4 ,at last you have to stop4 ,there is no getting through the impenetrable human wall4 ,it is a strange procession that is passing by1 as though conjured up from the ,middle ,ages4 ,huddled figures stalk past slowly and stiffly4 ,they appear like spectres4 ,old pictures of witches and inquisitionary trials are recalled to my mind1 for nowhere else have ,i ever seen such terrifying apparitions2 never in life4 ,black cowls are wrapped around their bodies1 and on their head are huge black conical hats a yard high4 ,long sable cloths1 in which only two eyelets are pierced1 are suspended over their faces down to their waists4 ,a corded rope is wound round the penitential garments4 ,the hands of the apparitions clasp rough wooden crosses1 or metal staves1 as tall as themselves4 ,these figures march in front of a portable dais on which a life-like statue of the ,virgin ,mary is enthroned clad in magnificent garments thickly encrusted with gold4--,the procession stops4 ,the dais is lowered4 ,a young woman steps from the crowd1 turns her eyes to the ,queen of ,heaven and sings her praise4 ,when the twenty or thirty bearers who carry the heavy dais on their shoulders1 and who are hidden by drapery suspended round the frame1 have rested enough1 the signal to start is given by knocking on the front of the dais4 ,a jerk1 and the procession moves on a few paces4 ,one religious body of brethren follows on the heels of the other4 ,each of them wear their own distinctive multi-coloured badges4 ,some have a blue pointed hat1 others white1 brown1 violet or other coloured garments4 ,next to a father his ten-year old son in the same vestments is often seen1 as well as the miniature penitent of fifteen in the procession4 ,the various brotherhoods are filled with an ardent ambition to outdo the others in the magnificence of their ,pasos as the daises are called4 ,the whole story of the ,passion from ,gethsemane to the burial of our ,lord1 is shown on them as they pass before our eyes4--,of course the clergy in full canonicals1 as well as the town and state officials are also represented in the procession4 ,at intervals1 groups of ,roman legionaries of ,christ's day appear1 then angels1 and ,st4 ,veronica carrying the kerchief4 ,interspersed bands bray and flourish the same march without cess4 ,each brotherhood in the procession is cerimoniously received by the chief authority of the town in ,constitution ,square which looks like a huge theatre auditorium4 ,it is filled with rows of chairs of which not a single one is empty4 ,the surrounding balconies are a sea of heads4 ,hour by hour passes4 ,night falls4 ,and now hundreds of wax-candles blaze forth on the daises1 and each penitent carries a gigantic taper in his hand4 ,thus this endless and mysterious procession of lights moves on to the cathedral1 passes through its magnificent nave1 and out again through the other doors into the streets4 ,the cathedral has opened its treasure-house for the 8,semana santa and displayed all its pomp4 ,the candles of the gigantic bronze candelabrum 7the renowned ,tenebrario7 as well as on the altar the sacred wax-candle weighing several hundredweight4 ,a huge sepulchre has been erected to the glory of ,christ1 in which the ,holy of ,holies is kept during ,passion week4 ,hundreds of lamps and candles illuminate the golden-white four-storey edifice1 which is over #cj metres high1 and flooded with a wondrous glowing halo4 ,the celebrated miserere of ,eslava is performed in the cathedral on the night of ,good ,friday4 ,but1 alas6 it is impossible to enjoy the sacred tunes owing to the general noisy inattention around4 ,weary forms are sitting on the steps of the chapels and around the grave of ,columbus4 ,here a mother is suckling her infant1 there an animate heap of rags is wrapt in sleep1 and all the while there is a continual pushing and elbowing to get to the front4 ,however we must not judge of all this in the light of serious northern church festivals4 ,this would only lead us to drawing both severe and wrong conclusions4 ,perhaps this manner may be an historical development4 ,has not our ,teutonic ,christianity also wedded itself to much that is ancient heathenism8 ,for instance ,christmas and the winter solstice festival4 ,much that is ,moorish obtains in ,spain to this day4 ,perhaps even--unconsciously--the conception of the purpose of a place of worship4 ,was not the mosque often enough a secular place of meeting for the ,moslems1 and at the same time a university8 ,however1 enough of conjectures4 ,it is a fact that the worship of the ,lord and the ,virgin ,mary is for the ,spaniard a service of love4 ,whether the occasion be ,trinity or ,passion week1 it is one of joyful praise of ,heaven4 ,i shall always remember one quiet hour permeated with the holy spirit of ,easter among these joyful and yet pious ,easter days4--,i had mounted the ,giralda1 that jewel of erstwhile ,moorish minaret architecture1 the cathedral tower4 ,at my feet lay the white sea of houses4 ,the town was bathed in sunshine4 ,the beautiful blue dome of heaven spread its mighty arch over the holiday-making land as though protecting and blessing it4 ,the faint music of the mass far below was wafted up to me1 when suddenly a booming vibration filled the air1 and all the tower bells1 which had been silent so long1 peeled out across the sunlit country3 ,christ is arisen6 ,the sister bells of all the other towers echoed the message across the spring clad country4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the ,patio 7#dj1 #db-di74 ,it is a favourite expression to call ,seville the town of bright court-yards4 ,those court-yards which light and fill the house with sunshine4 ,the ,sevillian house1 or rather the ,andalusian house1 is not a building such as our houses1 fronting on the street1 but one that fronts to an inner court1 turning its back on the street4 ,the outsides of the houses are bare of ornament1 almost windowless2 a secret to the passer-by4 ,all their beauty is displayed yardwards4 ,there wealth obtains in all its pomp1 and poverty unfolds its modest ornaments4 ,the narrow passage--the ,zaguan--leading from the street to the court is closed by a railed gate4 ,the gallery--to which access is gained by steps leading from the court--is supported by columns4 ,the rooms of the upper stories lead to the gallery4 ,to cool the air there is a fountain in the middle of the court surrounded by palms1 araucarias1 laurels1 orange-trees1 oleanders and flowers in pots4 ,the walls are covered with multi-coloured tiles4 ,against them brightly up-holstered furniture1 chairs1 and sometimes even a piano2 the inevitable guitar is in a corner4 ,climbing plants festoon the court4 ,practically this is the centre of the whole family life4 ,friends are received here1 hours passed in argument1 singing1 music and dancing--whether in company or alone1 dreaming away the hours1 listening to the plashing of the fountain1 it is in the court--the soul of the house--that most time is spent4 99 99 99 99 99 ,there is nothing commonplace about ,spanish houses4 ,they still retain their peculiarity impressed on them by the patina of age4 ,many have tumbled down under the burden of years4 ,many are dead2 but they 8died in beauty4 ,the period of their prosperity still lingers on in the churches and ornate faades of deserted squares4 ,toledo is the most ,spanish of towns4 ,it was once the heart of the country1 pulsating with the great rhythm of epic history4 ,but its heart no longer beats4 ,resting on steep granite hills above the deep ,tajo valley stands the yellow-grey heap of houses as though rooted in the rocks4 ,two gigantic bridges span the river4 ,narrow alleys lead up hill and down dale2 many-cornered and dark4 ,the whole town seems in a fighting mood4 ,huge gateways and towers1 the houses fort-like1 the doors studded with heavy nails4 ,indeed1 there is hardly a town that has seen so many battles rounds its walls4 ,spain's history has passed over it with heavy steps4 ,and to-day8 ,rent walls1 ruin and silence3 the town the accumulated wreckage of a thousand years 7#aci-adh74 ,segovia1 ,toledo's sister city is situated similarly on rocks arising abruptly from the plain4 ,it is dominated by a great cathedral tower1 and guarded by the well-proportioned ,alcazar which stands forth like a fairy castle4 ,a miraculous building1 erected one would say to brave eternity in the days when ,christ was born4 ,but otherwise ,segovia is different to ,toledo4 ,it is the ,nuremberg of ,spain1 gay in its leafy setting 7#aeg-afd74 ,there are other brave old companions-in-arms of these two veterans1 dating from ancient war days3 circumvallated ,avila 7#afe-afi71 ,cuenca and ,albarracin with their swallow-nest houses clinging to lofty crags 7#abj1 #aba1 #aib-aid71 ,daroca protected by two mountains over which the whole of the battlemented walls have climbed 7#aie-aig71 ,alquezar in the ,pyrenees1 the northern outpost of the ,moors in ,spain 7#baj-bab71 ,sigenza1 ,jerica1 ,trujillo1 ,caceres1 ,niebla1 ,carmona1 ,martos1 ,antequera1 and many bold castillos4 ,ronda is the most boldly situated town lying on a high plateau encircled by a wide mountain arena 7#fb1 #fc74 ,running through the rocky plateau is a huge crevice which looks as though it had been split in rage by the mighty fists of giants4 ,the streams thunder down in all their wild force over the boulders1 hammer threateningly against the rocky walls1 break into scintillating spray1 rush round in whirlpools1 and hurry on their course4 ,and in close proximity to all this turmoil1 the rocky walls stand unshaken in their immobility against the sky-line1 an emblem of eternity cast in stone by the hand of ,god4 ,the rainbow in the spray has been copied by man in the shape of a bridge high over the abyss joining the rocky heights upon which the town stands4 ,let us pass from these stubborn old battle towns to a more smiling scene3 ,san ,sebastian 7#bhf-bij7 known throughout the world for its incomparably beautiful situation on the sea4 ,the view from ,monte ,ulia1 a mountain guarding the entrance to this paradise1 is wonderful beyond words4 ,here nature has modelled and painted a masterpiece4 ,the sea hugs the land in two gracefully curved bays and catches the beauties of the town in the reflection of its waters4 99 99 99 99 99 ,cave-dwellings and the simple life4--,this time ,i decided to leave the destination of my wanderings to chance4 ,i could have chosen no better guide4 ,i set out long before the dew was dry1 or the sun had risen4 ,the palm trees were just beginning to shake themselves in the early breeze when ,i approached a strange rocky landscape4 ,dark holes in the rock stared at me like dead eyes4 ,but nevertheless life was hidden there4 ,human forms stepped out of the holes to greet the morn4 ,what ,i saw was a towering rock wall with hundreds of cave-dwellings next to each other and over each other4 ,some of them were even five storeys high and approached from the outside 7#ib74 ,where the rocks were too steep1 the approaches had been dug from the inside1 and upper storeys created with outlook holes and loggias high up in the rocks4 ,tunnels had been cut in the soft stone to get from one rock valley to the other4 ,the children were running about in the costume ,god had given them4 ,but it is not to be supposed that they were troglodytes1 and as unaware of culture as those who lived in the ice period4 ,high on the rocks you can read in large black letters on a white background 8,el ,retiro4 ,every ,spaniard knows1 at least by name1 ,madrid's beautiful park the ,retiro4 ,for this reason it seems somewhat of a joke to suddenly come across the name in such a spot far up on the rocks4 ,el ,retiro1 like ,sanssouci1 means solitude1 retreat1 place of rest4 ,an enterprising hotel-keeper has levelled his portion of rocks into roof-terraces where the favourite gossip hour 7tertulla7 is spent1 skittles played1 and merry dances performed4 ,hence the alluring words on the wall for the benefit of passers-by4 ,on another rock is graven the brief significant inscription3 8,dios1 ,pan y ,cultura 7,god1 ,bread1 and ,culture4 #ib-ie74 ,during the course of another stroll ,i was again equally surprised4 ,i saw smoke arising in the distance from ground that looked like fantastic mountain erosions4 ,surely this was not the site of volcanic activity8 ,indeed this was out of the question4 ,and on drawing nigh ,i discerned human figures moving among the columns of smoke4 ,i then saw to my astonishment that little smoking towers--not unlike champagne corks in shape--were chimneys projecting out of the ground4 ,i had again strayed among cave-dwellers4 ,what ,homeric primitiveness was there6 ,the valleys are the streets1 the mountain sides the fronts of the houses1 the pinnacles villas4 ,front gardens are once and a while supplied by giant cacti and spiky agaves4 ,my wanderings in this interesting world-forgotten primitive spot lasted for hours as ,i passed up and down the so-called streets 7#if-ii74 ,my greetings were met with a cheerful response1 and ,i was invited to enter a cool cave1 provided with a drink of fresh water1 and shown the treasures of the modest household3 the bed on the ground1 the hearth with a copper kettle1 the earthenware pitcher1 the stool1 the oil-lamp and the image of the patron saint4 8,now as to work8 ,i asked4 8,well we don't do too much in that way4 ,we cultivate what we need over there where the river runs4 ,we make bricks for the towns where the people live in houses4--,truly a picture of an enviable state of modest requirements4 ,there are still those who are satisfied with the tub of ,diogenes4 ,indeed you may find many such all over ,spain4 ,i remember when at a little railway station finding only a lad deep in his after-dinner nap4 ,for the rest1 there was no one else to take my luggage1 so ,i woke him up and asked him to help me4 ,he stretched himself in all the bliss of laziness1 took a couple of coppers out of his pocket1 and showing them to me said3 8,i've earned #be centimos to-day already2 that's all ,i need1 turned over1 and went to sleep again4 ,i continued on my way recalling the words of the ,indian philosopher3 8,he who is without wants is nearest to ,god4 ,there is no cause to shrug one's shoulders4 ,diligence and happiness are but relative conceptions4 ,and just the poorest in ,spain understand the art of doing nothing combined with extracting joy from next to nothing4 ,they need a little shade in summer1 and the sunshine in winter2 a piece of bread1 a tomato1 a drop of wine4 ,the whole earth with the sky for a roof is their bed-room2 the highroad their field of labour4 ,there is no master they would exchange positions with2 they are their own masters2 masters of their own time--verily a great possession this4 ,why then should they not spend it generously8 8,he whom ,god helps will go further than he who rises betimes runs a ,spanish proverb4 ,and the ,bible tells us3 8,behold the fowls of the air3 for they sow not1 neither do they reap1 nor gather into barns2 yet your heavenly ,father feedeth them4 99 99 99 99 99 ,feria in ,seplveda4--,a bull-fight4 ,there is high holiday in ,seplveda1 7#agb1 #agc7 an ancient little town far from the turmoil of the great world1 and far even from the railroad1 which indeed is nearly #ajj kilometres away4 ,the feria is the greatest day of the whole year4 ,men and women crowd into the place on horses and donkeys4 ,old friends meet again4 ,once more they see #8life'4 ,above all it is the bull-fight that is the greatest attraction4 ,it has been for weeks already the only topic worth speaking about4 ,as however our little town has no arena1 the market-place is used instead4 ,all day the lively rat-tat of hammers is heard there4 ,the windows of the picturesque dignified old town-hall gaze smilingly down on the lively scene4 ,at last there is really something worth looking at again4 ,another long tedious sleepy year has gone by4 ,there is hardly any one who does not go the hour's walk outside the town to admire the bulls which have come from a long way off1 and for the present are being kept at pasture4 ,when the great day has come1 every one is up with the sun4 ,the arrival of the savage animals is feverishly expected4 ,the bravest show their courage by going forth to meet the procession4 ,a cloud of dust on the highway announces its approach4 ,and finally forms emerge from it4 ,at the head a picador on horseback with a lance1 behind him the black bodies of the bulls surrounded by tame steers1 and followed by a second picador4 ,as they rush through the narrow streets to the market-square a mighty cry goes up3 8,los toros6 ,los toros6 ,shouting1 whistling1 howling1 yelling1 and a general pandemonium rends the welkin4 ,finally the bulls are secured1 and it is only in the afternoon that the longed-for hour arrives4 ,the forenoon has its own pleasures4 ,young men demonstrate their daring by teasing a young bull specially selected for the purpose1 and earn acclamation or mocking laughter as the case may be4 ,these young heroes try to put into practice what they have seen at the ,torero2 only it is less dangerous4 ,no blood is shed1 only torn trousers and bruises are the honorific mementoes of the great day 7#agd1 #age74 ,my thoughts naturally harked back to the first bull-fight ,i had seen--in ,madrid4 ,the impression was stupendous3 fifteen thousand gay spectators in the great sweep of the arena all impatient for the nerve-racking fight to begin4 ,the arena was filled with the babble of voices4 ,it was a chaos of colours1 cloudy lace mantillas1 flower-embroidered shawls1 fans swaying nervously1 jet-black glowing eyes4--,shouts of applause greeted the bull-fighters4 ,yells saluted the great bull as he rushed in4 ,the game was a risky one for life or death4 ,deeds of audacity were met with idolatrous cheers1 the timid with desolating laughter4 ,all of a sudden a coloured form is tossed into the air4 ,a single scream from a thousand throats4--8,is he dead8 8,no6 ,a sigh of relief4--8,go on6--,the condemned bull is mad with rage1 his opponent cold as steel4 ,he wields the mortal instrument1 the sword flashes1 and a hurricane of applause bursts forth for the victor and his tottering victim4 ,white handkerchiefs flutter from every seat like pigeons4 ,hats are waved1 a shower of flowers descends1 and the fted hero returns thanks1 nonchalant and proud4--,the trumpets blare and a new fight begins 7#abe1 #abf74 99 99 99 99 99 ,crossing the ,picos de ,europa4--,masses of high mountains with peaks about #bgjj metres high rise among the ,asturian ,cantabrian coast range4 ,they bear the proud name of ,picos de ,europa 7,the ,peaks of ,europe74 ,they are the ,dolomites of ,spain4 ,but they exceed these considerably in inaccessibility4 ,tourist facilities in ,spain are of a very primitive nature4 ,for this reason there are no shelter huts for mountaineers in the ,picos de ,europa1 and there are likewise no trained guides4 ,there are it is true some game-keepers4 ,shepherds and miners acquainted with individual parts of the mountains act once in a while as guides4 ,i had been at the gateway of the ,picos de ,europa when at ,covadongo the celebrated place of pilgrimage4 ,since then the desire had never left me to become acquainted with this demure mountain beauty so alluring and yet so stand-offish in her loneliness4 ,thus ,i started for the mountains4 ,my path led me from ,unquera through the ,deva valley to ,potes at the foot of the ,picos4 ,i very soon noticed that my task would be no easy one1 for shortly after leaving ,panes the track winds through a mighty and deep valley known as the ,desfiladero de la ,hermida4 ,my reception was not a friendly one4 ,the rocky guardian of the valley looked down and frowned at me1 and the sky treated me at intervals to a cold shower-bath4 ,in ,potes the clouds were low down on the mountain sides on which ,i was going to test my prowess the next day4 ,but ,i was so enchanted with the spot1 that ,i willingly renounced the view for that day4 ,the little town is a very ancient spot4 ,it must once have been the seat of many a knightly family4 ,this is attested to by the various ,spanish coats of arms on the houses4 ,but those times are now no more4 ,where once ,spanish grandees strutted by with buckled shoes and sword1 clodhopping peasants plod along4 ,and the present generation is hardly aware of the plentitude of beauty surrounding it4 ,bold bridges span the glen4 ,narrow colonades with overhanging balconies cling to the steep river bank4 ,a multitude of archways offer innumerable enchanting glimpses4 ,a high watch-tower guards the houses clustering at its base4 ,before the sun had risen on the morrow ,i had set out4 ,dark and dismal-looking clouds hung low over the landscape4 ,but the ,picos pinnacles had rent them asunder1 and suddenly they stood forth in the glory of the rising sun4 ,dark night lay behind me as ,i marched towards the sunlight4 ,my guide met me by arrangement at ,espinama4 ,he was a grey-headed man with weather-beaten face and smiling eyes4 ,his feet were clad in leather sandals1 and under his arm was an ancient umbrella4 ,we soon discussed the itinerary1 filled our rucksacks and started for the ,puerto de ,aliva4 ,the old song came back to me3-- ,the sun on my way ,in his golden array ,is my fellow and guide4 ,he casts my shadow ,o'er flowery meadow4 ,i wander world-wide4 ,as we passed on our way1 the houses of the village became smaller and smaller4 ,we soon left the last tree behind1 and our path led over sweet green slopes1 till they too were lost under the stony debris of rocky giants4 ,there was a hunting-lodge close to the foot of the ,pea vieja cliff which the king of ,spain visits nearly every year when chamois hunting4 ,the day drew slowly to its end4 ,great streamers curled round the ,pea vieja1 pale shadows floated by like silver grey cobwebs1 and the mist rose and fell with every breath of wind4 ,the billowing fog had already wrapped us in its mighty veil when we reached the miners' inn at ,lloroza4 ,an overseer invited us to spend the night there4 ,and we were right glad to find shelter1 in spite of the fact that both the hut and its furniture looked like the first attempts of primitive man to scale the ladder of civilization4 ,the night we spent on the hard ground was not a very restful one1 and we were glad when the approach of day called us from our layer4 ,when we left the hut a surprising spectacle met our eyes4 ,the fog which had deprived us of any possibility of obtaining a view the evening before now lay at our feet in the valley4 ,the summits of the mountain rose like islands in the sea of mist4 ,the moment had arrived when day struggled with night for predominance4 ,the full-moon's silver disc hung in the deep blue of the western sky1 and the morning star held its own for a while against the rising light in the east4 ,at last both moon and star turned to pale glass when the sun sent forth his herald rays4 ,the horizon was tinged with pink2 long red streamers fluttered from the windows of heaven to greet us1 and then the sun rose above the misty expanse1 gilded the crests1 flooded the eastern pinnacles with the glory of his light1 and glowed on the rocky wall to which our hut clung4 ,o wonderful silence of that hour6 8,a new day beckons us to other shores4 ,for yet a short distance the beaten path used by the king when stalking showed us the way4 ,then we bent our steps over pathless boulders1 sharp edged rocks1 mounds of debris1 snow-fields strewn among the stony desert with its jagged rock walls and towers4 ,whole herds of chamois stared in astonishment at the strange intruders in their paradise4 ,for the rest1 they showed little inclination to run away4 ,the mountain fastness became progressively more barren and wild in its aspect4 ,an infinitely dismal mood seemed to brood o'er the scene4 ,yet the magnificence of these mountains augmented from minute to minute4 ,grotesque stone giants--cast in burning ore by the furnace of high heaven--stood guarding this great grave of nature4 ,woe to the wanderer whose ignorant footsteps err here6 ,death lies in ambush in the deep crevices and chasms4 ,at last we halted in front of the monarch of the magnificent mountain empire4 ,his throne stands high in everlasting snow2 a golden crown is on his head4 ,his picture is known to all from the most distant mountain valley to the shores of the restless ocean4 ,all admire his beauty1 all know his name3 ,naranjo de ,balnes4 ,this huge rock colossus rises #fjj metres over its surroundings4 ,its perpendicular walls show hardly a crevice4 ,and it seems incredible that nevertheless that bold mountaineer the ,marqus de ,villaviciosa de ,asturia climbed to its summit4 ,on our wanderings round this mighty and stubborn rock tower we seemed to be lightened of all earthly burdens high up there in the solitude above the depths of humanity4 ,we climbed up to the ,ceredo tower4 ,the rocks were as sharp as knives4 ,again the ghostly mist rose from the valleys and whirled spectrally around us4 ,it was #e o'clock and the ,cares valley with ,cain to where our steps were directed were not yet in sight4--,i asked my companion3 8,how far yet8 8,a few hours more was the not very consoling reply4--,the mist1 that enemy of mountaineers was getting thicker4 ,and ere long we could not see twenty paces ahead4 ,the feeling of insecurity grew apace4 ,and the sensation of climbing with mist-bound eyes was terrible4 ,again ,i questioned my guide4 8,severo1 is there no hut or shelter on the way8--8,i don't think so4 ,once more long minutes of silent groping4 ,at last we were1 at any rate for a while1 rid of the stony region4 ,here and there a rocky projection1 but it was quite impossible to tell if we were not suspended on it hundreds of meters over a yawning abyss4 ,it was impossible to see anything through that fog4 ,and at a quarter past six it was pitch dark4 ,suddenly we came across a few low rough huts of unhewn stone huts sheltered by a rock-wall4 ,there at last we could spend the night4 ,but my guide wanted to go on4 8,stop6 ,i cried4 8,can we get to ,cain to night8--8,i don't know4 8,well then we'll stay here6 ,suiting the action to the word1 we crept into one of the huts1 crouched down1 and slept fitfully through ten endless hours of night4 ,but even they passed4 ,the morning meant a dangerous and nasty descent4 ,we waded knee-deep in wet grass1 clambered over ledges with fog all around us4 ,woe to us had we slipped6 ,then we got lost and had to stop and climb back with the greatest care4 ,then we slid down a stony gully in which nearly every step set rocks thundering to the depths below4 ,at last the moist grey mist began to lift4 ,a rift showed the bed of the valley far beneath us1 and1 as we thought1 houses4 ,but no1 we were mistaken4 ,they were huge boulders1 the wreckage of some avalanche that filled the upper hollow4 ,down and down we scrambled till finally we broke through the foggy screen4 ,our goal was at our feet4 ,cain1 strangely walled in by precipitous rocky cliffs rising sheer #aejj metres high4 ,we were there6 ,and we could rest4 ,some bread and butter was all we could find in the whole village to appease our hunger4 ,we would gladly have rested there a day1 but the place was too inhospitable4 ,we had therefore to shoulder our rucksacks again4 ,the distance we had climbed down the day before1 we had to climb up again on the opposite rocks of the ,pea santa4 ,hours and hours of strenuous efforts passed till we reached the ridge4 ,we re-descended valleywards in a drizzling rain4 ,lake ,enol was the last spot of beauty to be hidden from our view4 ,it was there we struck the main road1 and then marched another #aj kilometres down to ,covadonga which we reached as tired as dogs4 ,night had already cast her shadow over the valley1 and the stars were beginning to shine forth4 ,welcoming lights were seen burning in ,covadonga4 ,but it seemed as though we should never reach them4 ,however the prospect of a bed lent us strength1 and at half past eight we stumbled painfully over the threshold of a clean hospitable house4 ,i went to bed exhausted1 and my restless dreams were haunted with the beautiful and terrible wanderings in the ,picos de ,europa 7#bff-bgd74 99 99 99 99 99 ,my pilgrimage to the ,yuste ,convent 7#aec74--;,i left soon after midnight1 for marching is delightful in southern nights when the glittering stars shed their soft light from the great vault of heaven4 ,in the south the cool night is succeeded by summer days that are the misery of the pedestrian4--,the hours melted by but slowly in the furnace heat of the day4 ,i was beset with all possible ills3 infernal heat1 thirst1 and no water4 ,not a tree or a shrub was to be seen for miles2 no shade2 hours without passing a house2 not a soul abroad2 the melancholy mood that comes in the train of solitude4 ,my path was obstructed by a river--at any rate1 water--but nary a bridge6 ,so ,i had to wade1 and continue my journey4 ,at last ,i spied a shepherd4 ,what joy to feel that ,i was no longer alone6 8,is this the right road to ,yuste8 ,i enquired of him4--8,yes1 but where doest thou come from1 and what countryman art thou8 ,the good fellow addressed me with the fraternal tutoyer1 as though we were brothers4 ,when he heard that ,i was a ,german he was quite surprised4 ,he willingly agreed to accompany me to the next village1 and was quite curious to hear something about my country4 ,the news of the war had penetrated to this remote part of the world4 ,it was charming to listen to the questions of this child of nature4 ,he knew nothing of the three ,rs2 had never seen a railway1 had never left the neighbourhood of his village4 ,we soon met another shepherd on the mountain-side who was just as pleased and interested as the other4 ,and ,i must say1 that wherever ,i was in ,spain1 all classes of the population were friendly towards ,germans4 ,it was not long before we encountered other wayfarers who joined us1 for ,sunday enticed them into the village4 ,my entrance was therefore almost a triumphal procession4 ,we entered the inn1 ordered some wine1 and sat down to a well-earned rest4 ,when ,i wanted to pay the landlord1 he refused1 telling me that ,pepa had settled the bill4 ,however1 this wouldn't do4 ,and at last he agreed to my paying on condition that the next time ,i returned ,i should be his guest4 ,they all shook hands with me most-heartily and ,i continued joyfully on my way4 ,at last ,i stood in front of the monastery gates4 ,they were opened1 and the white haired abbot rode out on a little donkey1 holding a green parasol over his head4 ,i saluted the venerable ,father and enquired of him whether ,i could stay at the monastery for the night4 8,no1 he replied1 8impossible4--,discomfitted ,i exclaimed3 8,but where am ,i to go to-day8 ,i have travelled fifty kilometres and have come from ,navalmoral4--8,what1 on foot8 ,impossible6 8,yes1 but ,i have4 ,i am a ,german and want to see the spot which the emperor ,charles ,v4 exchanged for all the crowns in the world1 and where he closed his eyes4--8,you are a ,german8 ,of course you can't continue your journey4 ,i was most kindly and touchingly taken care of4 ,i was shown the monastery which had once been destroyed by the ,french4 ,decay and mould have continued the work of destruction4 ,but nature's eternal youth triumphs victoriously amongst the ruins and beautifies the decay of age4 ,and yet this is a place to think about the everlastingness of all things1 of the end of all terrestrial happiness4--,once that great monarch who had fled from the turmoil of the world had paced these halls4 ,at supper1 ,i1 the infidel sat at the monks' board and was treated like a brother4 ,the next morning ,i was awakened long hours before sunrise4 ,a lay brother lit me with a lantern through the dark and ancient park4 ,the monastery gate swung on its hinges1 the latch fell heavily1 and ,i was again out in the world all silvery with the moonlight4 ,for a moment ,i stood entranced4--,i heard the mass bell calling the monks to prayers4 ,and the gates of ,paradise were closed behind me4 99 99 99 99 99 ,the last echoes4--,my wanderings through ,spain filled me with the joy of life4 ,she had become my second home4 ,it was with a heavy heart that ,i left4 8,o follow me ye southern days ',neath colder skies and paler stars4 ,and fill my thoughts with golden rays6 ,the hour of departure had arrived4--,it was a wonderful moonlight night in which the little ,spanish steamer which was to bear me homewards sailed slowly out of ,ferrol harbour4 ,the moon cast a silver bridge over the water1 and along it my thoughts fled back to other moonlight nights when she had often shown me the way in picturesque ,spain4 ,the lights along the coast shone like the eyes of anxious friends looking a last farewell before darkness closed their lids4 ,and then the little ship ploughed homeward through the eternal waters with the eternal sky above us1 and the old old song of the waves accompanied me back to my familiar home4 99 99 99 99 99 ,and now that days and weeks of cloudy skies hang heavily over my country where the sun is not so generous as in southern climes1 my heart is filled with yearning for ,spain1 with nostalgia for the sun4--,then ,i look at my pictures1 and we hold converse together1 and re-live those unfettered days spent in wanderings in sun-kissed ,spain4 ,in this volume ,i send forth my sun harvest4 ,may it cast its light in the hearts of many6 ,may it tell of my love of ,spain1 and of my heartfelt thanks to her chivalrous people for all their kind hospitality6 ,,alphabetical ,,list ,,of ,,names ,,and ,,places ,albarracin #aib-aid
