,besides1 it gives a boy pride in his appearance1 helps him toward self-confidence1 gives him a standing in the eyes of the public4 ,with boys dressed alike1 rich and poor1 a real brotherhood can be established40 ,how ,to ,do ,it ,there is one simple key to getting your ,unit uniformed4 ,your own attitude and example4 ,you have to make up your mind to get a ,uniform for yourself and wear it at all ,unit undertakings4 ,your boys will quickly realize that you take ,scouting seriously1 and they will soon get into ,uniform themselves4 ,see ,handbook for ,scoutmasters1 page #djd and ,cubmaster's ---------------------------------------- -------------------------------- ,illustration ,illustration3 ,,christmas ,,spirit ,by ,e4 ,urner ,goodman ,national ,program ,director ,scouting1 like ,christmas1 is a thing of the spirit4 ,everybody knows about the spirit of ,christmas6 ,it is a spirit which makes itself felt in the heart of man no matter where he may be4 ,there was the story of the landing at ,casablanca which tells of this spirit so vividly4 ,the story1 contained in a letter to home by a ,scout of yesterday1 relates3 8,it was ,christmas ,eve when we landed at ,casablanca4 ,we were among the first contingent to land1 so we didn't know what kind of reception we'd get4 ,our officers gathered us together and cautioned us about that4 ,no one could predict if it would be a friendly welcome or a welcome of machine gun fire4 ,so1 as we marched up the main street of ,casablanca1 we walked as silently as possible4 ,no one spoke to his neighbor4 ,everything was expectant and utterly tense4 8,the march led toward the ,east1 and as we marched1 my eye quickly picked out a bright star shining down near the ,eastern horizon4 ,at once ,i remembered another ,star that likewise shone so brightly on ,christmas ,eve4 ,but now things seemed so different4 ,danger and death apparently were lurking behind every house as we passed4 8,and then it happened--but not as we expected it4 ,for1 coming clearly and crisply from a group of buildings we were passing was the sound1 not of machine guns or rifles1 but the sweet and lovely strains of a blessed ,christmas carol4 8,the effect was electric4 ,we all felt it4 ,i looked at my buddy1 who was a hard boiled sergeant4 ,he caught his lip in his teeth and with tears coursing down his cheeks1 he marched on unashamed40 ,well1 there you have it4 ,with the spirit of good will moving in the hearts of men1 the ,christmas spirit overcomes the rattle of the machine gun4 ,it is wonderful to contemplate what effect the ,christmas spirit has even on souls hardened by men at war4 ,more familiar1 of course1 are the homey evidences of the ,christmas spirit 444 the smell of balsam boughs and turkey roasting2 the sight of the bright red berries on a wreath of holly2 the soft caress of a falling snowflake on a moonlit ,christmas ,eve2 the unforgettable taste of that red and white peppermint candy cane2 and above all1 the sweet notes of ,christmas carols falling on the ear--all these things bring to us the spirit of ,christmas at home4 ,but something deeper than all of that is there1 because ,christmas reminds us of the song of the angels1 of 8,peace on ,earth among ,men of ,good ,will40 ,so similar is the spirit of ,scouting1 which grows out of such vivid experiences as these3 ,the smell of woodfire with bacon broiling above it2 the call of the loon over the lake on a quiet night2 the sight of a great bird soaring over pines on a mountain top2 the comforting feel of your buddy's shoulder as you hike along a woodland trail at night2 the unforgettable taste of wild strawberries gathered to augment the ,patrol's menu4 ,these things have a part1 it is true1 in the spirit of ,scouting1 but there is something far deeper1 as we all know4 ,for ,scouting1 like ,christmas1 is a thing of the spirit4 8,happyfying0 ,no season is happier than the ,christmas season1 and the secret of that happiness lies in what our founder1 ,baden-,powell1 called 8happyfying40 ,it is the philosophy of the old song1 8,i want to be happy1 but ,i can't be happy1 'till ,i make you happy1 too40 ,our ,christmas turkey loses its taste and becomes dry fodder unless we have done something to make somebody else happy at ,christmas time4 ,now that is the spirit of ,scouting at ,christmas and at all other seasons4 ,it was put into the ,scout spirit by ,baden-,powell4 ,the implication is clear4 ,our happiness all year through1 as ,scouts1 grows out of the many acts we do to bring happiness to those around us4 ,it is a fine thing for the ,troop to engage in national or community programs of service4 ,we should do that as good citizens4 ,it is an even greater thing for a ,patrol to single out some very human service they can perform for somebody close at hand4 ,and when these ,scouts see the smile on the face of the neighbor they have helped1 then they know all about 8happyfying0 and their own lives are blest1 too4 ,and the ,scoutmaster1 or other ,unit ,leader1 knows about 8happyfying10 for is he not making a ,christmas gift to the nation every week in the year as he carries on his ,scoutmastership8 ,thus he1 himself1 receives dividends the like of which no billionaire in history ever knew4 ,so it was that one such ,scoutmaster speaking at the last meeting of our ,national ,council was able to say1 8,when the ,scoutmaster looks around him and counts his blessings1 he finds that his reward is the richest of all40 ,good ,will ,the youngest ,cub ,scout1 of course1 knows about good will1 for does not the ,law of the ,pack remind him that 8,a ,cub gives good will80 ,so1 in the ,boy ,scout experience he finds that 8,the ,scout is a friend to all and a brother to every other ,scout40 ,as he grows older he learns more of the ,world ,brotherhood of ,scouting and finds that good will among men knows no boundaries of race or creed1 or nationality4 ,the beloved song of the angels at ,christmastime1 then1 is the thing that ,scouting is trying to do all year round4 ,insofar as ,scouting builds its brotherhood and gives good will all year round1 will it be speeding that day of 8,peace on ,earth40 thing in common--we want that boy who lives on the farm to have a good break4 ,some of us believe that the ,scouting program can play a big part in his growth4 ,we should face this whole question objectively and constructively4 ,let's start by asking a rather blunt question3 ,do rural boys really need ,scouting8 ,or is their normal life already filled with the ingredients which make for character and good citizenship8 ,,vernon ,,nichols1 ,,scoutmaster3 ,they need it very much4 ,scouting not only builds character1 but it helps especially in developing leadership1 a quality often lacking in farm boys4 ,,howard ,f4 ,,fox1 ,,supervisor1 ,,vocational ,,agriculture3 ,the boys who live in small towns need ,scouting1 but ,i think those who live on farms need it in less degree4 ,,joe ,c4 ,,carrington1 ,,council ,,president3 ,i can't agree with ,mr4 ,fox4 ,farm boys need it even more than town boys1 who have more supervised playgrounds1 more church and school and club-sponsored programs4 ,the rural boy has very little to round out his life1 and really needs ,scouting4 ,l4 ,h4 ,,eleazer1 ,,cubmaster3 ,perhaps the elements are there on the farm1 but ,scouting can help bring them out4 ,sometimes when a man is close to a thing1 he doesn't see it in its real light4 ,also1 all rural boys do not stay on the farms where they were reared4 ,these boys need much of the same kind of training their city brothers get4 ,,carrington3 ,that raises a good point--when the rural boy moves to town1 he very often has no entering wedge into the youth programs there4 ,but if he is a ,scout in the rural area he can transfer his membership and make a transition which would have been difficult without ,scouting4 ,its universality is an important feature4 ---------------------------------------- -------------------------------- ,reaching ,out ,illustration ,illustration ,l4 ,o4 ,,parker ,county ,farm ,agent ,metter1 ,georgia ,,henry ,p4 ,,carstensen bother us8 ,of course it's hard to take ,scouting out to the boys in the open country1 but plenty of ,councils have proved that it can be done4 ,i'm thinking of ,draper in my ,south ,dakota country1 with a population of #aij1 ,barnard with #fj1 ,strandburg with #agg1 ,stratford1 ,northville and ,garden ,city adding #gjj more--six communities with a little better than #aajj1 supporting ten thriving ,scout ,units4 ,i think of places like ,tulare 7population #bdd7 with #ai ,scouts1 #ag of whom come from their farms4 ,it can be done4 ,,fox3 ,the crux of the problem is probably leadership4 ,can rural communities supply it8 ,there is no question in my mind but that it's there1 but will men who do hard physical work long hours every day in the week give the time needed for ,scouting8 ,,henry ,p4 ,,carstensen1 ,,master1 ,,state ,,grange3 ,part of the problem here is the tendency of parents of rural youth to take the attitude that ,scouting is a non-essential activity1 a luxury which they cannot afford4 ,some good parent education would make it easier to get leaders and thus to spread ,scouting4 ,,carrington3 ,there are ways to get men in the farm country4 ,as ,district ,chairman1 ,i used a well-known method that worked wonderfully4 ,i used a survey blank that asked boys the question 8,who do you think is the best man in your community1 and why80 ,the kids would name men whom we hadn't thought of1 and give good reasons4 ,when we went to such men and told them why the boys thought they were tops1 resistance faded away and we usually had our leaders4 ,in most communities the leadership is there if we know how to dig for it4 ,,nichols3 ,leadership may be there all right1 but believe me1 trained leadership is sure lacking4 ,that is where our ,local ,councils need to give us more help--short courses that busy men can attend4 ,i think time and money spent by the ,local ,council assisting new leaders would be well spent4 ---------------------------------------- -------------------------------- ,illustration ,,witcraft3 ,training becomes harder as the distance between your ,scout ,units increases4 ,here are a few ways we have been able to get training to our men3 7a7 ,we run week-end training courses4 7b7 ,our monthly ,round ,tables are packed with training as well as fellowship4 7c7 ,the ,one-,unit course is tops--the committee joins with the leaders in an at-home training experience4 ,this may lack some of the advantages of larger courses but it has some of its own4 7d7 ,we count heavily on personal coaching by our ,field ,executives and ,commissioner ,staff4 ,mc,m,i,l,l,e,n3 ,before we get too deeply into ,council methods of handling country ,scouting1 let's study it a bit more from the boy's angle4 ,what aspects of ,scouting are most interesting and helpful to boys8 ,,eleazer3 ,i would say the most interesting aspect to the rural boy is camping4 ,the most helpful is probably the achievement part of the program4 ,,fox3 ,i put this question to the forty students in my vocational agriculture class1 well over half of whom are or have been ,scouts4 ,the younger boys put camping first2 the older ones put it on a level with advancement skills4 ,all of them rated these two aspects of ,scouting tops4 ,,nichols3 ,one of the values ,i see my boys get out of camping is the ability to work with others4 ,too often rural boys do not have a chance to develop this important trait4 ,that's why group activity is especially important to rural boys too4 ,mc,m,i,l,l,e,n3 ,a very good point1 ,mr4 ,nichols4 ,our rural boys aren't different1 but sometimes their opportunity to develop certain abilities and traits is limited3 ,scouting's camping and its group activity can fill a big void4 ,speaking about program1 what do you think of the ,merit ,badge work8 ,,fox3 ,in the first place1 rural boys like to receive recognition for things they do1 as well as any youth4 ,i know that many of the ,merit ,badges encourage farm boys to improve their agricultural skills4 ,experienced farmers make good counselors in agricultural subjects4 ,,nichols3 ,the rural boy possibly needs the ,merit ,badge program more than does the city boy because he has less access to these 8idea sources40 ,he needs to know about trades and occupations1 too1 other than those found on the farm4 ,,witcraft3 ,in addition to the values the ,merit ,badge program holds for the boy1 it has two other big values2 it has sold many rural people on ,scouting because farmers readily see the value of such subjects as ,beef ,production and ,soil ,management4 ,it has also brought many men into ,scouting4 ,a man gets a taste of ,scouting while serving as a ,merit ,badge ,counselor and1 liking this experience1 accepts other leadership responsibilities4 ,mc,m,i,l,l,e,n3 ,mr4 ,witcraft's comment about adults reminds me of a frequent criticism heard in the rural field that such activities as ,scouting interfere with a boy's responsibilities to his farm home4 ,is this so1 and need it be so8 ,l4 ,o4 ,,parker1 ,,county ,,farm ,,agent3 ,it is true that they could interfere1 but ,i don't think it happens often4 ,when the ,unit ,leader and ,committee are rural people they will recognize this problem and avoid it4 ,,eleazer3 ,getting to and from meetings sometimes poses a problem4 ,perhaps a less frequent ,troop meeting would be the answer1 with ,patrol meetings in the boys' homes in between4 ,,nichols3 ,the camp may be the biggest problem1 if it comes in the middle of the harvest season4 ,,fox3 ,camp doesn't really have to interfere1 does it8 ,each ,troop would naturally schedule its camp dates to miss the busiest season in that area4 ,,nichols3 ,i didn't mean that the camping problem was hard to overcome4 ,certainly it is so important to a farm boy that we must get it in somehow4 ,going to the ,council camp helps us realize that we belong to something bigger than our own ,troop in our own little community4 ,in the same way1 inter-,troop activities help us keep on our toes4 ,,parker3 ,i certainly agree that camping is important1 but it is the ,scouting activity which is most likely to conflict with home responsibilities4 ,councils with rural territory should be very aware of the problem1 and should handle it realistically4 ,,carstensen3 ,this whole discussion of competitive activity raises another question which we in the ,grange feel is important4 ,that is1 that leaders of all youth movements should recognize the need for closer contact and understanding--the need for planning together so that their problems will be coordinated rather than conflicting4 ,we have tried to work this way in developing our ,juvenile ,grange program2 we have made an effort to support such activities as the ,boy ,scouts1 the #d;,h1 ,future ,farmers1 etc4 ,,fox3 ,i am not too much concerned about the danger of competition4 ,neither the #d;,h nor the ,f4,f4,a4 cover the entire country1 by any means4 ,furthermore1 my experience has been that boys can belong to both ,f4,f4,a4 and the ,scouts and do a good job of both4 ,then1 too1 since ,future ,farmers are all older boys1 their activities become a continuation of the leadership training received in ,scouting4 ---------------------------------------- -------------------------------- ,illustration ,,parker3 ,we in #d;,h like to have our boys active in ,scouting4 ,scouting and #d;,h strengthen one another4 ,for example1 ,scouting recognizes with its ,merit ,badge awards the work our boys do in #d;,h projects4 ,scouting provides programs in non-agricultural subjects which #d;,h does not offer4 ,,witcraft3 ,let's go even stronger than that4 ,there isn't nearly as much competition for a boy's time in the country as there is in the city2 that's one of the reasons ,scouting is so much needed in the country4 ,mc,m,i,l,l,e,n3 ,all of this brings us face to face with the pay-off question3 ,granted that ,scouting has a program needed by country boys1 and that there are ways of making it work1 what help is most needed by isolated rural ,units1 and how can the ,local ,council best provide this help8 ,,eleazer3 ,the help most needed by those of us who lead rural ,packs and ,troops is that which can be given by the ,executive or a ,field ,executive4 ,this is especially true when we start new ,units4 ,,nichols3 ,training is our ,no4 #a need1 and this includes our ,committees4 ,our ,council made a good move in filling its monthly ,district meetings with real training and a lot of good fellowship4 ,,witcraft3 ,that word 8fellowship0 is especially important4 ,when men live a long ways apart they need opportunities to get together4 ,the ,council must find ways to make this happen4 ,,fox3 ,financing rural work also seems to be a problem4 ,i am not too familiar with ,scouting1 but ,i wonder if this does need to be a problem8 ,,nichols3 ,this is probably more true in times of financial stress than it is now1 but there is a problem to face4 ,one thing is sure1 the stronger and more active the ,troop1 the easier it is to raise funds4 ,if the people of a community see that ,scouting is doing a lot for the boys1 they'll support it4 ,,carrington3 ,in our ,council we furnish ,scouting service all over our area1 but we think it's right to apportion more ,field ,executive time to the ,districts which are providing adequate funds to make that field service possible4 ,at the same time1 we carry on an organized extension program in all areas with the hope that all will make use of ,scouting and give it their support4 ,,witcraft3 ,it is true that the cost of rural ,scouting has often delayed ,councils in coming to grips with the rural problem4 ,usually we have assumed that ,scouting starts in the city1 moves out to the small towns and eventually filters down to the village and open country4 ,the ,council faces a practical problem4 ,it has a certain amount of time and money4 ,how can these be spent most wisely8 ,the same amount of work that will organize a rural ,troop of six boys at ,olson's ,corners will organize a ,troop of twenty boys in the headquarters city4 ,it has seemed to be sound business to spend ,council money where it would bring ,scouting to the most boys4 ,but consider what this means to ,olaf ,torkelson1 twelve years old1 out at ,olson's ,corners4 ,can we say to him1 8,sorry1 ,olaf1 but it will probably be several years before we can organize marginal places like ,olson's ,corners40 ,our ,council1 at its coming ,annual ,meeting1 will take action on a proposal by our ,organization and ,extension ,committee that we shall henceforth recognize an equal responsibility to all boys within our area1 regardless of where they live4 ,we believe such an approach would be financially sound1 and that the rural area will support it4 ,,fox3 ,i broached this question of cost1 but actually ,i don't think it's serious4 ,the open country has the boys1 and wants them to have their chance4 ,the money can be secured if we approach the right people4 ,for example1 some farm cooperatives now have educational programs4 ,they might see big dividends in efforts spent to help ,scouting develop leaders among rural youth4 ,farming has become so complex that the country can no longer afford to let its best youth go to the city4 ,today farming demands the best brains as well as the strongest bodies the nation can produce4 ,the modern farmer must organize1 manage1 finance1 produce1 and market4 ,scouting can1 and does help round out a rural boy's life4 ,it builds the kind of men the nation needs on its farms4 ,mc,m,i,l,l,e,n3 ,this has been good talk4 ,it has been all the more persuasive because we have heard the voices of men who have actually 8reached out40 ,rural ,scouting is a fact that grows all the time4 ,one thought in closing3 ,no one has much trouble to get boys into ,scouting4 ,but in order to keep the ,scout groups flourishing1 we need more men who will give leadership4 ,i would like to suggest that no ,council's annual dinner1 or outdoor event1 will be quite complete unless the top leaders in farm and rural business activities are personally invited to see and hear for themselves4 ,pay them more attention and they will pay more attention to ,scouting4 ---------------------------------------- -------------------------------- ,,scouting ,,on ,,main ,,street ,by ,edward ,belason1 ,assistant ,director of ,public ,relations ,,boy ,,scout ,,week will soon be upon us4 ,for one entire week in ,february you will hear and see a lot about ,scouting as the general public finds itself becoming ,scouting-conscious4 ,you will hear ,scouting on the radio1 see ,scouting in newspapers and magazines1 and rub elbows with ,scouting as ,scouts go to and from school in their uniforms4 ,as a ,scout leader1 you will want to make the best use of the nationwide publicity and direct the attention of people in ,,your community to the activities of ,,their ,scouts4 ,one ideal method for a local ,unit is through a ,scout display in a store window with a prominent location4 ,the three immediate advantages of a window display are3 ,,one1 the general public becomes ,scouting-conscious2 ,,two1 the ,unit has a live and unusual program for several days2 and ,,three1 boys who are not now ,scouts see an opening for themselves to join the ,unit4 ,plan ,your ,display ,before you ask a merchant for window space1 have some plans for your display on paper1 or at least in your mind4 ,explain to him the advantages to the community1 to ,scouting1 and to his store4 ,most storekeepers are willing to cooperate4 ,larger shops may even offer the services of trained window decorators4 ,once you obtain the space you have a responsibility to both the merchant and to ,scouting to install the neatest and most interesting display you and your staff can create4 ,no doubt you can get some valuable help from your ,local ,council4 ,build your display around the theme for #aidi--8;,adventure--,that's ,scouting60 ,show the folks in your community that your ,unit spells ,adventure with a capital 8,a40 ,make a list of the items you will want to display1 such as photographs1 handicraft articles1 posters1 flags1 collections1 knot boards1 books1 etc4 ,select those which you can make outstanding4 ,don't crowd the window2 use just what you have room for4 ,after the list is decided upon1 get the ,unit's specialists on the job4 ,get the shutter bugs busy on photographs1 the craftsmen to their work benches1 and the artists to their layout pads4 ,photos are one of the best mediums for telling your story4 ,select those that truly represent ,scouting activities4 ,enlarge them and mount them neatly1 with captions easily read4 ,the background1 too1 should be eye-catching4 ,it should be large enough that passersby will be arrested and enticed to step up close to look over the display4 ,you can make a good backdrop with a photo illustrating ,scout adventure1 and enlarged to take in practically the entire background4 ,if you cannot get extra size enlargements in your community1 choose several photos1 make #aa #ad enlargements and group them to form an artistic background4 ,or you might have your boys make a large ,scout emblem from beaverboard and color it4 ,another possibility is to mount several photos on wallboard cut to the shape of the ,scout badge4 ,illustration ,experiment with arrangements in advance1 so that when you enter the store you can trim the window in the quickest possible time4 ,chalk off the actual window area on the meeting room floor4 ,place smaller items in the foreground1 and gradually build up to the background4 ,if pedestals are needed1 perhaps the storekeeper may lend them to you4 ,if he has none1 make some of cardboard and gummed tape4 ,cigar boxes1 paper cartons1 and tin cans1 painted or covered with colored paper1 can be used4 ,extremely bright colors will sometimes detract from the items on display4 ,avoid them or use them carefully4 ,neutral colors can easily be arranged to compliment and flatter the displayed items4 ,for example1 when exhibiting a collection of leather-craft items1 a cream or light green will show them up better than bright red or blue4 ,illustration ,,adventure 444 that's ,scouting6 ,the large silhouette in this window was made1 as shown below1 by placing subject between light and wrapping paper tacked on wall1 tracing his outline and filling in with black poster paint4 ,arrange the articles to create continuity4 ,it isn't necessary that each item be seen from every angle4 ,avoid over-crowding2 it has a tendency to confuse and tire the window-shopper4 ,he may walk away and perhaps miss the essence of your message4 ,not until you have had your 8dress rehearsal0 are you ready to install your display in the store window4 ,the pet peeve of any shopkeeper is to have his store upset while windows are being dressed1 especially if the job takes too long4 ,agree on the time convenient to him1 then do the job rapidly and neatly4 ,don't send the whole gang over4 ,pick two or three good workers and let them handle it4 ,a good job done efficiently will undoubtedly get you a return invitation next year4 ---------------------------------------- -------------------------------- ,,the ,,dust ,,of ,,the ,,round-,,up ,,settles ,illustration ,the ,round-,up that started along the ,old ,scouting ,trail three months ago is heading for the biggest event of all--the final 8branding10 when the 8mavericks10 the new boys brought into ,scouting this fall1 are formally and officially brought into the corral4 ,the 8branding0 ceremony1 which should be staged in early ,december1 can be one of the most colorful events your ,unit ever held4 ,put it on with all the spirit and zip of a real western event4 ,use imagination in the staging--a few corral fence rails in the background1 a fire 8burning0 in front1 and the investiture team in cowboy togs4 ,think in western terms when you write the investiture script4 ,act out the ,round-,up and branding with a nice combination of cowboy color and dignity1 and your new boys and your public will remember the night of the 8branding0 ceremony for a long1 long time4 ,when that final ceremony is staged1 the 8branding0 done1 we will have time to lean back against the old corral fence and take stock of the results4 ,what do we see as the dust of our ,round-,up settles8 ,how well did we round up the strays8 ,are there still boys 8out there0 who should be getting ,scouting1 and who could be1 if we were really on our toes8 ,before you hang up your spurs and lariat1 won't you check up once more on that boy that showed up at two or three meetings and looked as though he wanted to join but somehow didn't make it4 ,you might be surprised at what you would find if you called on his folks--so often boys are kept out of ,scouting because of misunderstandings which can be so easily cleared up when you talk to the parents4 ,lots of boys get that close to ,scouting before they are shut out4 ,the extra time given to this personal follow-up will be some of the best you ever spent on ,scouting4 ,this may seem like a lot about membership1 but remember1 all of us who really believe in ,scouting's value to a boy1 want to do our part to extend ,scouting opportunity to as many boys as we can handle in our ,unit4 ,membership facts1 by the way1 are a good measuring rod of our program4 ,when there's fun and adventure in a ,scout ,unit most every boy wants to join4 ,when there's always something new and interesting happening1 they want to stay in4 ,that's what our membership figures really represent--our ability to provide the opportunity to join1 plus the program that holds4 ,much of this fall's ,round-,up activity has been designed to provide more of the opportunity to join1 as well as a good deal of planning for the program that holds boys4 ,now we need to follow through on that program4 ,that means steady attention to the regular activities1 whatever they may be--the ,den meetings1 the ,patrol meetings and weekly ,troop or ,senior ,unit meetings1 and special attention to the highlights that serve to 8point up0 the boy's ,scouting experience4 ,what are some of these highlights8 ,in ,cub ,scouting the monthly ,pack meetings are highlight events2 each one is different and apparently more interesting than those that have gone before4 ,up and coming ,boy ,scout ,troops and ,senior ,units plan their highlights in a different way4 ,they schedule at intervals through the year a number of events specially chosen to give a lift and a purpose to the week-by-week program4 ,they use these special events as something to look forward to1 something to prepare for1 and afterward1 of course1 to look back on with happy memories4 ,the ,denner is probably the most neglected and forgotten leader in ,cub ,scouting4 ,yet he is one of the most important links between other ,cub ,scout leaders and the ,cub ,scouts themselves4 ,the ,denner is elected by the boys4 ,while their standards may be different from the standards of adults1 you can probably trust them to select the boy whose leadership they are most ready to accept4 ,if there is any influencing of the election1 probably the best point to bring out is that the older boy with more experience is usually the best4 ,usually the term of office is not long4 ,however1 there is no specific limit4 ,if the term is not too long1 more boys will have an opportunity to practice leadership4 ,on the other hand1 if it is too short1 no ,denner serves long enough to become a really helpful leader4 ,,his ,,responsibilities ,the ,denner is the right-hand man of the ,den ,chief4 ,here are a few of the responsibilities which the ,denner in most ,dens can and should assume3 #a4 ,arrive early to prepare meeting place4 #b4 ,meet with ,den ,chief and ,den ,mother to go over last minute plans for the meeting4 #c4 ,there are times when he can lead games or songs4 ,this will require coaching from the ,den ,chief1 and also some backing during the activity4 #d4 ,he often keeps and reads the ,den diary although in some ,dens another member of the ,den carries on this responsibility4 #e4 ,he can also help with simpler ceremonies4 ,for example1 he should lead the ,grand ,howl and ,living ,circle4 ,when the ,den repeats the ,den ,promise and the ,law of the ,pack1 he are not an award for service but a badge to designate the boy who holds the office4 ,it should be presented to the boy at a ceremony either at a ,den ,meeting or a regular ,pack ,meeting4 ,,some ,,general ,,tips #a4 ,if the office is to seem important and worthwhile1 the ,denner must have an active part in the leadership of ,den activities4 #b4 ,sometimes a boy becomes a little overbearing4 ,you may have to tone him down a bit1 and make clear to him that one mark of a good leader is to lead in such a way that folks like to follow4 #c4 ,make the election of a ,denner an important matter4 ,discuss it thoroughly4 ,make clear to the boys that the boy they elect will definitely be their leader once he is elected and they are then expected to follow him4 #d4 ,recognize the ,denner4 ,a bit of recognition will make his leadership more helpful4 #e4 ,the ,den ,chief and the ,den ,mother should see that the ,denner has a happy experience4 ,if the boys do not follow his leadership1 it will part of our program4 ,as usual1 ,blue and ,gold will be our program theme for ,february4 ,this has become a tradition in ,cub ,scouting4 ,it's an annual party occasion with ,boy ,scout ,week as its theme4 ,perhaps your ,blue and ,gold party will be in the form of a potluck where everyone brings his own food1 or perhaps you'll do it banquet style4 ,however you do it1 it will be the basis for a your ,pack will fit into some scheme for attending church on the ,sunday of ,boy ,scout ,week4 ,if your ,pack is sponsored by a church1 perhaps all boys who belong to that church will sit in a body with their parents on that particular ,sunday4 ,perhaps you could even work out some plan whereby ,cub ,scouts will participate in the church service or prepare an exhibit for the entrance hall of the church4 ,,your ,,sponsoring ,,institution ,perhaps your ,pack is sponsored by a ,p4,t4,a4 or a civic club which has regular monthly meetings4 ,if so1 why not start working on a plan where your ,pack might have some part in the ,february meeting of the organization4 ,it is not necessary for the ,cub ,scouts themselves to attend the meeting1 but an exhibit or a display and perhaps several representatives of the ,pack would help to put the spotlight on ,boy ,scout ,week4 ,,window ,,displays ,every ,pack should try to prepare a ,cub ,scout window display in a community store4 ,if possible1 pick a store window which is located in the neighborhood of your ,pack4 ,these are the folks who will be most interested in what you are doing4 ,you will find some suggestions on ,cub ,scout boys of ,cub ,scout age have come to camp and been admitted1 and four of the original five have attained their twelfth birthdays and are now enjoying their first meetings as a ,boy ,scout ,neighborhood ,patrol4 ,without exception1 the younger boys are all looking forward to their ninth birthdays so that they may join the envied group of ,cub ,scouts4 ,our first month was dedicated to getting acquainted with ,scouting literature1 its history and intent1 and fixing up the gravel-floored garage loaned to us as meeting place by the ,cubmaster4 ,we borrowed the unused school workbench1 decorated walls with ,cub ,scout plaques1 ,american and ,den ,flags1 and the framed ,den ,charter4 ,with the help of local men1 often not themselves fathers of ,cub ,scouts1 we made many things of wood1 tin1 and copper during the year4 ,but the regular meetings are held at the ,den ,mother's home1 or at the homes of all the boys in rotation when the ,den ,mother is out of town4 ,our theme for the second month was 8,books10 when we learned how to care for books and specialized in the ,reading ,achievement4 ,now the company-sponsored ,inca ,club has a children's book-shelf for the first time in its thirty years4 ,during ,april and ,may we made musical instruments and practiced using them--,i can hardly say playing them--for a minstrel act that was part of a five-part program we gave at the end of the school term in ,june4 ,in ,july we had our first 8,pack0 meeting--the same few boys1 but with their parents and the general manager and his wife as guests4 ,each boy personally prepared one dish to be served1 and each mother another1 so we had a generous banquet that night in the ,golf club4 ,in ,december1 with 8,service0 as our theme1 we collected odds and ends of broken or non-used toys and outgrown clothing4 ,by mid-month the garage was overflowing1 and with the mothers we managed to get the hopeless looking pile reduced to gifts in acceptable condition to distribute to the planned and put on4 ,it's going to be a big month1 and the following ideas will help make it so4 ,naturally1 we can't tell you which type of music is most typical in your section4 ,that is something ,pack and ,den leaders will discover during ,december in preparation for the ,january theme4 ,school music teachers can help1 as well as most libraries4 ,each ,den can choose a song and do it in costume for the minstrel show4 ,of course1 the boys of the ,southwest will be singing cowboy songs such as 8,home ,on the ,range10 8,headin' ,for the ,last ,round-,up10 8,cowboy's ,lament10 ,the boys of ,new ,england may choose to sing sea-farin' chanteys1 such as 8,blow the ,man ,down10 or 8,reuben ,ranzo40 7,a laughable stunt would be to have a ,cub ,scout on stage going through singing motions while a hidden 8basso profundo0 sings 8,rocked ,in the ,cradle of the ,deep407 ,boys of the ,south will probably sing southern ballads and spirituals4 ,,homemade ,,musical ,,instruments ,you will find this a most popular field with ,cub ,scouts4 ,they can actually make instruments that will have musical tones as well as being comedy take-offs of actual instruments4 ,you will find a page of ideas for homemade musical instruments on page #ag of this issue of ,,scouting4 ,naturally1 it's a lot more fun to make these instruments if the boys know they are going to use them in your ,pack meeting or minstrel show4 ,perhaps each ,den will have its own 8kitchen cabinet0 type of band4 ,all ,dens can practice the same songs1 then come together at the ,pack meeting in one big band and play them together4 ,another interesting field is to make rhythm instruments which boys play to the tune of a phonograph record4 ,rhythm instruments include pot cover cymbals1 rattles1 blocks of wood1 and tin cans4 ,,cub ,,scout ,,musicians ,perhaps there is a boy in your ,den who does most things poorly but plays or sings well4 ,this is the month he can shine4 ,encourage boys with musical instruments to practice their best numbers and play or sing solos for the minstrel4 ,you will probably find several boys in your ,den1 and surely a number in your ,pack1 who will be interested in writing ,den or ,pack words to old time songs4 ,occasionally we even find a boy or two who can compose simple music and words so that a ,den can have an entirely original song4 ,,group ,,and ,,family ,,sings ,why not suggest that each ,den ,mother invite boys and parents of her ,den into her home on a ,sunday afternoon4 ,they could sing old time songs together1 and boys who play instruments can put on an informal recital for parents4 ,perhaps there will be a dad or mother who can sing a solo4 ,in addition to ,den sings1 families will enjoy singing together occasionally4 ,none of these things will happen--,den ,mothers won't think to ask the parents over1 and boys won't be asked to play their instruments--unless you push the idea4 ,,january ,,pack ,,meeting ,,tips ,the ,cubmaster or member of the ,pack ,committee can give a short talk on the importance of parents looking for opportunities to recognize their sons for having done projects found in the ,achievement ,program4 ,many times boys will complete projects without realizing they are meeting a requirement for an ,achievement4 ,for example1 a boy may make a boat just because he is going to a lake and would like to have one to sail4 ,unless his parents point out that he has met the requirements for the ,model ,boats ,elective1 he may never receive credit for it4 ,opportunity should be given for parents to ask questions on the ,achievement ,program4 ,the ,cubmaster should also cover current items1 such as condition of the ,pack ,thrift ,plan1 attendance1 etc4 ,,joint ,,meeting4 ,you will find minstrel show tips on page #af1 minstrel show time4 ,before the show explain to the boys the program for the month ahead1 and interest them in the ,blue and ,gold party4 ,skip a formal closing this month4 ,close your ,pack meeting with the grand finale of the minstrels4 ,make all announcements before the show begins4 ,on page #af you will find some ideas on preparing and staging your minstrel show4 ,here we are concerned mostly with the regular ,pack meeting outline4 ,pre-,opening4 ,during the pre-opening1 boys remain in uniforms rather than wear minstrel costumes4 ,save the costumes as a surprise4 ,each ,den should have a table available for exhibits developed during the month1 especially homemade instruments1 music scrapbooks1 ,cub ,scout-composed music1 etc4 ,separate ,meetings4 ,during this period ,den leaders1 with the help of others if necessary1 should help the boys get ready for the minstrel show4 ,it will not be difficult in the time allowed1 because in most minstrels only end men wear blackface4 ,leaders should also make sure the boys know their songs1 jokes1 and stories4 ,just before opening the joint meeting1 the boys should be lined up ready to begin the minstrel4 ,while the boys are busy reading for the minstrel1 the ,cubmaster meets with all parents4 ,since the ,january ,pack ,leaders' meeting will probably take place before the ,january ,pack meeting1 plans will probably be well established for the ,blue and ,gold party in ,february4 ,the ,cubmaster should explain ,blue and ,gold plans to parents1 doing his best to build their enthusiasm for making it the high spot of the entire year4 ,he should explain the way in which food will be handled1 announce the names of those who will serve on committees1 etc4 99 99 99 99 99 ,you'll find specific helps for planning and producing your shows the cast remains in white-face with simple costumes1 while the end men wear bright1 comic costumes and blackfaces4 ,either way is good1 so take your choice4444 ,it's a good idea to have all boys except the end men dressed alike4 ,if they are to be blackfaced1 have each bring a black sock which can be pulled tight over the head to hide the hair4 ,a white shirt with a black tie 7cloth or paper71 black trousers and socks1 and dark shoes complete the costume4 ,it also adds a nice effect if every boy can wear white gloves4 ,even white canvas work gloves will serve nicely4 ,stage jokes and stories back and forth with the interlocutor4 ,the interlocutor can be either an adult or boy1 and it is his job to keep the show running smoothly and to prompt those who forget their cues4 ,calif4 ,illustration ,someone asked for volunteers to take over a ,den one night at our ,pack #eh meeting4 ,bewildered and afraid1 my wife said she would try4 ,after all1 there were just six youngsters from around our block and they were all nine years old and anxious to get a start in ,cub ,scouting4 ,the man in charge of the ,pack meeting said it would be nice if one of the dads would act as ,den ,dad1 so having three boys of my own1 out went my neck and there ,i was 444 ,den ,dad of ,den #e1 ,pack #eh4 ,the boys learned the ,cub ,scout ,law and ,promise1 and they also learned that discipline was the first word in the language4 ,in due time this became a part of their regular activities4 ,they learned fast1 because when they were obedient they were rewarded with special trips or treats4 ,and because one fellow's misbehavior penalized all the others1 they learned by living that the 8buddy system0 really works4 ,our ,den meetings always came first4 ,the program was planned so that each boy could advance within the six month period1 and the achievements were geared into the program so that what we did as fun also resulted in advancement4 ,and we didn't have any spoiled boys at #aa either1 because our program helped them grow into ,scouting4 ,our ,denners were elected by democratic vote1 with ability1 interest1 and progress as the prerequisites4 ,believe me1 it worked1 and we never had any real problem with our ,denners 444 either before1 during1 or after they took office4 ,yes1 our ,den had its problems4 ,i remember one boy who just couldn't read4 ,his athletic ability was nil but you should have seen his beautiful art work4 ,another boy was a bully1 but one day one of the little fellows1 who had practiced diligently for weeks1 used a swell one-two punch during a ,den parents' meeting show1 and the bully never gave us any trouble again4 ,in fact1 he became one of the fairest1 squarest shooters in the ,den4 ,any personal problem of any of our boys was handled secretly by the ,den ,mother1 and many a mother called to express her grateful thanks for help in home problems involving her son4 ,we were pretty regular in our recognition for handicrafts and attendance at the monthly ,pack meeting1 and our skits and stunts were mighty good4 ,the highest honor ever given any of us was when we were invited to present our puppets at the ,council ,cubbers ,pow ,wow4 ,one of the mothers of the ,den made puppets as her hobby1 and after a while every boy in the ,den was in the act in the many stories we told with these little acting dolls4 ,every one of our boys was taught to mend his clothes and do simple cooking4 ,he learned a lot of handicrafts1 but most of all he learned to be clean in every sense1 and to be courteous and friendly4 ,all of this happened during the war years 444 at a time when most folks were singing the blues that we couldn't get leaders 444 that we were too busy to worry about the little fellows 444 that we had a war to win and nothing else counted4 ,all true stories must come to an end4 ,but my wife and ,i had our real thank-you as ,den ,mother and ,den ,dad when twelve of our thirteen ,cub ,scouts graduated with the ,scout-to-be and his dad4 ,we set them at ease and start to pass the boy on his tests4 ,he's ready all right and does a good job1 and we make it a point to let him know it4 ,then we tell of the #bnd ,class requirements1 how simple they are to pass1 and how with a little bit of help from dad there is no reason why he shouldn't be ,eagle in a couple of years4 ,dad1 pleased that his son is on the first step of ,scouting1 is in a receptive mood1 so we go on to explain the fun in ,scouting for man and boy1 how winter camps are the highlight of our ,troop activities and how other dads go along on these camps4 ,our ,troop registers about thirty-six ,scouts every year and this year we registered twenty-four dads4 ,they are ,scouters and take an active interest in problems confronting the ,committee4 ,on the average1 we have no less than fifteen dads at every monthly ,committee meeting4 ,not everyone can make every meeting1 but all can and do pitch in whenever we have a special project to work on4 ,for instance1 we needed money to buy camping equipment a year or so ago4 ,one dad took over as chairman of the project which turned out to be a waste paper and magazine drive4 ,he rallied twenty-eight ,scouts and twenty dads and their cars4 ,we put #bej into the ,troop treasury and had a swell time doing it4 ,four of the dads on the ,troop ,committee act as a ,board of ,review for the ,troop4 ,then at the subsequent ,court of ,honor this same group along with other members of the ,committee sit on the ,court and make the awards4 ,at these ,courts of ,honor we make it a point to invite and expect every mother and dad to attend--even though their son may not be up for an award4 ,we know he will be at a future ,court1 and know his mother and dad would want the same cooperation and interest shown by other parents4 ,as ,i've said1 we like to go camping1 to spend long week-ends in the woods1 and when one of these week-ends comes along another dad steps into the picture4 ,he's our ,transportation ,chairman and it's his job to see that the ,scouts get to and from camp4 ,because our dads come from every walk of life and all kinds of businesses1 we look into their daily jobs or hobbies for special talents that might be employed at a ,troop meeting4 ,one of our dads is ,lieutenant ,commander in the ,coast ,guard1 so some weekend this fall the ,troop will take a trip and visit the local ,coast ,guard ,station and see how it is operated1 and incidentally look over and into the workings of a submarine stationed there4 ,no you won't get them all4 ,you'll run across the dad who just can't do much because of his job1 and you'll run across the dad just not interested--even the fellow who is most willing to have you take the boys to camp1 his boy included1 and not even be able to lend a hand with transportation4 ,don't let these few discourage you however1 nor cause you to slacken your efforts to ask the next dad who comes along4 ,don't be ,,scout ,,week ,adventure ,by ,william ,e4 ,lawrence ,director of ,boy ,scouting ,in ,fun and ,fellowship ,it seems strange that ,,fun must be emphasized as a feature of ,scouting4 ,for that's what ,scouts expect when they join a ,troop4 ,that's what they must get if we are going to keep them interested 444 but it should be fun with a purpose1 a dignified sort of fun that ,scouts will always remember4 ,new games and inter-,patrol contests2 better ,patrol and ,troop meetings2 stunt nights2 special features1 such as ,troop attendance at the big basketball game or a ,troop swim at the school or 8,y0 pool2 wide games on every hike and camp2 these are only some ways to make ,scouting fun4 ,and don't overlook fellowship4 ,one way to stimulate wholesome companionship is to see to it that every boy is in the ,patrol where he fits--in a ,patrol where he has friends1 common interests with the other fellows1 a leader he will gladly follow1 activities he helps to plan and responsibilities he has to carry out for the welfare of his gang4 ,,there ,,is adventure in fun and fellowship and it's up to us to provide opportunities for it4 ,in the ,out-of-,doors ,many times1 when boys drop out of ,scouting they tell us it is because 8we didn't go hiking or camping often enough0 or 8our program is always the same old stuff40 ,scouts want to go ,,out4 ,we must take them out--out where they can master the skills of the pioneer1 explorer1 woodsman1 or sportsman4 ,scouting has the program for the out-of-doors--hiking and camping4 ,but let's make it hiking and camping with a purpose--to explore wilderness areas1 catch bigger fish1 track wild animals1 tramp the trails of the old pioneers4 ,let's help ,scouts learn outdoor skills--but then1 let's give them a chance to use those skills in seeking adventure4 ,every ,scout has the right to a rugged outdoor experience1 for ,scouting means outdoor adventure4 8,adventure--that's ,scouting40 ,but what is adventure8 ,webster says that it's 8,that which happens without design 444 hazard 444 a bold undertaking 444 a remarkable occurrence 444 a striking event 444 a stirring incident40 ,to adult minds such a definition conjures up visions 444 leaving the commonplace1 going into the unknown4 ,and 444 most of us find it only in reading about the great and hazardous adventures of others4 ,we go with ,perry and ,stefansson to the ,arctic or with ,shackleton1 ,amundsen1 ,scott and ,byrd to the ,antarctic4 ,we go up the ,mississippi with ,de,soto or down it with ,la,salle4 ,or we thrill to the determination1 courage and excitement in the conquest of ,mt4 ,everest1 or in flying faster than sound4 ,perhaps we as adults have few things happen to us now that we call adventures4 ,but 444 let's not forget that adventure is a relative thing4 ,a boy may put up a front of being sophisticated but he hasn't lived long enough to get around much4 ,there are still plenty of bold undertakings1 remarkable occurrences and stirring incidents ahead for him4 ,can't you recall some of your own early adventures8 ,they'd seem pretty tame to you now 444 but were they then8 ,within the last few years ,i have hiked and camped in some of the places where ,i hiked and camped as a ,scout4 ,i've been surprised to find that the forests are now only small wooded areas 444 the mountains ,i climbed just hills 444 the wide lakes hardly more than ponds4 ,adventure to a boy is something that is new and different 444 a change of surroundings 444 experiencing new things in new ways4 ,it is this promise of adventure 444 of camping and of life in the outdoors that lures the boy into ,scouting4 ,we must keep faith with him by giving him that adventure 444 not just to satisfy him but because it is the best way we have of holding his interest4 ,and 444 only as we hold his interest can we influence his development4 ,but if we give a boy a good1 old-fashioned1 rugged brand of ,scouting 444 if we teach him to take care of himself 444 if once a month we take him to a not-too-distant spot with a pack on his back 444 have him sleep on the ground and cook his meals 444 he will have adventure4 ,here1 with his ,patrol and ,troop he will establish a temporary settlement4 ,he will meet the problems of shelter and food and learn to get along with his fellows4 ,every new experience will bring new problems to be solved4 ,as he grows in ability1 his experiences can become longer and more difficult and thus more adventurous4 ,opportunities to live outdoors in rain and snow should be sought4 ,in this way he may learn additional skills which come only from living with1 and mastering difficulties4 ,when he can light a fire and keep warm with wet wood1 pitch his tent1 and make his bed in a rainstorm 444 then he will have had adventures and through them learned a lot about self reliance4 ,remember ,webster's definition 444 8a bold undertaking 444 a remarkable occurrence 444 a striking event 444 a stirring incident40 ,they are all there4 ,you can find them as you work and plan your ,troop program4 ,if you do1 you will help boys to know themselves4 ,you will develop in them a feeling of responsibility toward others4 ,you will go far ,it will point up to parents and friends the way ,scouting helps boys develop their latent leadership ability4 ,den ,chiefs1 too1 should be recognized for the important part they play--recognized in the ,troop1 before fellow ,scouts1 parents and friends4 ,a special investiture for ,troop leaders at the ,open ,house1 or another special occasion would be the ideal way to recognize this leadership4 ,n4,y4 ,there are two ways to get the know-how of winter camping4 ,one is the hard way1 by trial and error1 the other is profiting by the experience of others4 ,we did it the hard way1 which has certain advantages2 once you learn a trick1 you don't forget it4 ,but1 we're happy to let you in the easy way1 so let's take first things first3 ,illustration ,packing ,we usually have each ,patrol get personal equipment together and lay it out in neat piles4 ,patrol equipment and food is divided equally into as many piles as ,scouts in the ,patrol4 ,we consider both weight and bulk1 and try to even it up4 ,it's a good idea to fill your cook pots 7we use five ,no4 #aj cans7 with food or small articles which might possibly be greasy1 or break or freeze1 and place in the top of your pack4 ,if blankets are on the outside 7get them inside if possible7 protect them from the weather by rolling in waterproof groundcloth4 ,don't have the end of your blanket roll exposed4 7,we found we could keep the ,patrol canteen from freezing by putting it in the middle of a bedroll47 ,illustration ,clothing and ,equipment ,as you travel and begin to heat up1 peel off layers of clothing4 ,several layers are warmer than a few heavy pieces4 ,this goes for socks as well as shirts4 ,air space gives good insulation4 ,if it's raining or snowing1 be sure to wear a water-repellent outer garment1 removing the inner layers and packing them in the flap of your pack4 ,you'll want them--dry--later at night4 ,in snow country1 specially after a fresh snowfall1 you'll find a large amount of snow constantly dropping off trees onto your pack1 your back1 and down your neck4 ,carry a small stiff brush to remove it4 ,keep the brush handy in an outside pocket for removing snow from clothes and equipment4 8,it's easier to keep ',em dry than to dry ',em out60 ,damp socks may be dried during the night by laying them flat across your stomach outside whatever night clothing you are wearing4 ,in cold country1 shoes should be dried before the fire and placed inside or under your bedroll for the night4 ,i'll never forget the time we had the first really cold night and left our ski boots outside the bedroll4 ,they were like rocks and it took some time to soften them enough to get our feet in them4 ,we are strong believers in the ,swedish bow saw in country where we do a great deal of wood cutting4 ,we cut bed logs to hold the dead leaves1 boughs1 or grass4 ,we cut poles for our tents and reflector fires4 ,we cut large base logs on which to build the fire to keep it from burning itself out of sight in deep snow4 ,i'll never forget the day we 8lost our fire0 when we were on a day hike4 ,we were in a large frozen swamp and had made fires to cook our lunch4 ,you should have seen the expression on one face when1 with a hiss and sputter of steam1 his fire disappeared into the water1 leaving his hot dog dangling above floating charcoal4 ,one reason for emphasis on the bow saw1 is that it does twice the work with half the energy4 ,wood fills with frost in winter and axes bounce instead of cut1 no matter how sharp they may be4 ,in winter look for just the opposite type of campsite you would select in summer4 ,instead of a shaded open knoll1 seek low lands1 if they are frozen1 where trees are thick and provide good windbreak4 ,places you never visit in summer suddenly come into their own for winter camping4 ,a small roll of copper wire will come in handy for many things4 ,one fellow always carries about four wire pothooks of varying sizes4 ,oh yes1 he can make a wood pothook1 but that takes time1 and often when we have made camp a little late because of a long trip or late start1 his pothooks come in mighty handy4 ,he also added pot bags to our list4 ,strange as it may seem1 we don't have one ,scout who likes to wash the black off pots2 thus1 if we are making only one camp1 we just crush the #aj cans and bury them4 ,when we use a regular pot1 we just wash the inside1 pack it full of other food and equipment1 and slip on the pot bag1 which prevents it from dirtying up our pack4 ,illustration3 by ,remington ,schuyler ,tents ,tentage is a story in itself4 ,we use the ,tab tent 7,,scouting1 ,december1 #aidg71 which is a rectangular1 suspended tent4 ,it has thirty-seven tabs which give us a chance to pitch it in many different ways1 each providing twenty-inch walls1 which make for more room and efficient use of the tent's interior4 ,for winter camping we pitch it with an open front in either winter baker1 forester1 or explorer style1 using forty-penny nails or logs to anchor it on frozen ground1 or logs or sticks buried in deep snow4 ,we like logs best2 the same logs can be used for bed logs with the ,tab tent4 ,we bank the tent well with grass1 leaves1 or snow--for that wind can whistle under an open edge too easily4 ,we have a favorite tripod fire crane which works perfectly under any conditions--frozen ground1 in snow1 or mud4 ,it eliminates cutting crotched sticks and pounding them into hard or frozen ground4 ,the three uprights may be dead or live wood fastened at the top with a small piece of rope1 wire1 or even a neckerchief4 ,the lug pole is green wood about an inch in diameter4 ,this rig can be easily moved as your fire changes1 and works well with any type of fire lay4 ,don't forget a small food cloth for keeping food and cooking equipment off the ground4 ,keep one pot on the fire for a constant hot water supply2 it will come in handy in a dozen ways and is an excellent first aid precaution4 ,it is easier to melt snow in water than in a bare pot where it must be stirred to keep from burning4 ,let each individual prepare his own beverage with boiling water and the beverage powder he prefers4 ,this saves tying up another pot4 ,a good ground cloth is essential4 ,make it large enough to go under and over your bedroll4 ,build your bed of dried leaves1 grass1 or boughs4 ,don't rely on that summer sleeping bag alone--extra blankets are necessary4 ,newspapers are good insulation4 ,sleep with your head to the highest part of the tent so that your breath won't freeze and form a hoarfrost on the tent and fall off onto your blankets4 ,one fellow hit on a good idea on our last trip4 ,at night he prepared his tinder1 kindling1 and firewood in three neat piles inside his tent4 ,when morning came1 he extended one arm1 in went the kindling1 a match1 and it's lighted1 with him still in bed4 ,a stick or two of wood and things began to warm up4 ,by the time he had to get up1 he didn't miss his warm blankets 444 well1 not much4 ,we carry two pairs of long underwear4 ,the one worn during the day is taken off and dried at night when going to bed and when it is warm4 ,the next morning clothes are put on over the set of underwear worn during the night1 eliminating too much exposure of bare skin--an important point1 especially when you are inside that bare skin4 ,first aid precautions in cold weather differ from regular summer first aid2 shock is greatly intensified in cold weather4 ,blankets and canteen hot water bottle are handy4 ,how to treat for frostbite is required knowledge4 ,make preparations against snow blindness in northern regions4 ,temporary sunglasses may be made with cardboard1 cloth1 or wood with slits cut through1 fastened in place with adhesive tape4 ,watch out for your feet4 ,wear several layers of light wool socks with large sized waterproof shoes1 shoe packs1 or ski boots4 ,tight-fitting ski boots will cause you trouble4 ,lay down boughs or branches around your fire2 you can walk on them and thus keep your feet out of wet snow or mud caused by the fire's heat4 ,you'll pick up other ideas as you go along4 ,it's not difficult1 and you don't need special equipment or skill4 ,all you need is the spirit of adventure--the spirit your ,scouts have--and the desire to try something different4 ,it's fun4 ---------------------------------------- -------------------------------- ,,the ,,early ,,scout ,,gets ,,the ,,bird ,killing two birds with one stone may have been satisfactory in the old days1 but in these days of inflation we figured we should be able to knock off at least six birds1 figuratively speaking of course4 ,it all started at a ,committee meeting when we were looking around for a ,scout ,week window display idea4 ,a mass display of bluebird houses made by the ,scouts was suggested4 ,but just making birdhouses as a craft project did not seem too practical1 unless we could put the houses to use and get birds to nest in them4 ,but why couldn't we do that8 ,we could4 ,we did4 ,and this is how it worked3 ,illustration3 ,boards were cut and kits were assembled in the basement workshops of ,committeemen and friends4 ,wolf ,photo ,first of all1 each ,committeeman made one birdhouse1 using the pattern shown here and an old apple crate or scrap lumber4 ,that was to prepare the ,committeeman to help the boys4 ,it also gave us a start with ten houses4 ,then each ,scout was given a copy of the pattern and asked to make a house in the next week4 ,most of the fellows came through and we had twenty more4 ,now we were ready for mass production4 ,we scouted the lumberyards in town1 and the building projects for scrap lumber--#a thick boards in various lengths and widths4 ,everyone was cooperative and we got all the wood we needed4 ,we bought the nails1 and then looked around for a 8basement shop0 or woodworking hobbyist to help us prefabricate the birdhouses4 ,the power saw was easily found1 and we went to work sawing up the boards to the proper sizes4 ,illustration3 ,birdhouses were used first in ,scout ,week window display and later were placed out in orchard country4 ,frederick ,avery ,photo ,wolf ,photo ,then we tied up the boards into 8kits10 each kit containing all the makings of a house4 ,in ,patrol ,meetings1 the ,scouts assembled the houses4 ,that gave us something over #aej more houses4 ,window ,display ,when the houses were complete1 just before ,scout ,week1 we gathered them all together and built our window display4 ,the photo shows what it looked like4 ,but the photo doesn't show all the interest it aroused4 ,mapping ,the craft work 8bird0 and the window display were knocked off--now for setting up the houses4 ,the ,buffalo ,ornithological ,society helped us1 and we placed them along fifty miles of highways radiating out from town4 ,the houses were placed in orchard country1 with the approval of the land owners4 ,each group made a sketch map of the roads along which they set up houses1 and we put the segments together to make a large map showing the location of all the houses4 ,illustration3 ,a map was made to show the location of each birdhouse so that check-ups could be made during the nesting season4 ,wolf ,photo ,bird ,study ,of course the chief purpose of the project was to attract birds and provide nesting places for them4 ,so two more 8birds0 fell before our one stone4 ,weekly hikes1 during the spring1 gave ,scouts a chance to see how successful the housing development was4 ,every house was checked and the tenants carefully observed4 ,landlords can't be too careful these days4 ,we found that we housed more than #djj young birds4 ,,the ,,early ,,scout ,,gets ,,the ,,bird ,illustration3 ,by ,h4 ,b4 ,hammill1 ,jr4 ,committeeman1 ,troop #fd1 ,williamsville1 ,n4,y4 ,in the fall too1 hikes were necessary1 to check on the houses to see how they were standing up1 and also to clean them out4 ,bluebirds won't use a house that contains the remnants of a last year's nest4 ,so the houses were all cleaned to be ready for the #aidi season4 ,community ,service ,of course there is one more 8bird0 that we haven't mentioned yet--and probably the most important4 ,this was one of the best community service projects we could try4 ,for bluebirds are insect eating birds1 and one family in one season can destroy an unbelievable number of harmful insects4 ,attracting the birds to orchard country should certainly help to improve the apple crop--at the same time the birds are among the first to arrive in spring and they stay all summer4 ,they are colorful1 cheerful birds and their very presence should help to make some people happier--just to see and listen to them4 ,so that's our birdhouse story4 ,it was a project that lasted for six months4 ,it is good ,scouting all the way through1 and it was not hard to organize4 ,we heartily recommend it to others4 ,but remember6 ,the early ,scouts get the ---------------------------------------- -------------------------------- ,,scoutmaster',s ,,minute ,illustration ,sometimes knowing the right thing to do in an emergency is just as important as having the courage to do it4 ,that's one reason why in ,scouting1 ,first ,aid is an essential part of the ,scout requirements4 ,for instance1 if ,second ,class ,scout ,gerald ,maley of ,cleveland1 ,ohio1 had not practiced his ,first ,aid1 his friend would not be alive today4 ,last ,november1 ,scout ,maley with his friend ,norman were crossing a railroad bridge when the wind blew ,maley's hat off4 ,it landed somewhere in the railroad yard under the bridge and the two boys climbed down to the yard to recover it4 ,they hunted1 but could not find it4 ,suddenly1 ,norman had an idea4 8,i'll bet it's on top of that box car over there40 ,up he climbed to look for it4 ,half way up he slipped1 tried to save himself and grabbed a live wire which was hanging low4 ,the shock knocked him to the ground and the ,scout ran to help him4 ,norman lay without moving and the ,scout thought at first he was dead4 ,but he had been practicing his ,first ,aid in his ,patrol4 ,he immediately started artificial respiration in earnest just as he had practiced it in meeting the week before4 ,soon ,norman was breathing again1 but screamed in agony as he came back to consciousness4 ,he was terribly burned about the hands and arms4 ,again the ,scout went into action4 8,hang on1 ,i'll get you up to the road1 we'll find somebody who can get you to a doctor40 8,transporting ,injured10 he said to himself1 8no chance for a four man carry now1 ,i'll have to use the good old #8pack-strap'40 ,he got ,norman's arms over his shoulders from his back and somehow managed to get up the bank to the bridge4 ,here he had to rest1 but fortunately a car passed soon4 ,scout ,maley hailed it and ,norman was on his way to the hospital for treatment4 ,after a few days he recovered4 ,the really remarkable part of this story is that ,scout ,maley was a smaller boy than his friend1 and has a crippled leg1 so that he is obliged to walk with a decided limp4 ,some of you fellows with two eyes and strong arms and whole limbs might think over what this ,boy ,scout accomplished1 as a result of his ,scout training1 to save his friend4 ,in recognition of ,scout ,gerald ,maley's skill1 the ,national
