course of the ,sunday ,services1 and without any idea of its being noticed beyond the circle of its hearers4 ,as1 however1 the interest of the subject1 far more1 certainly1 than anything in its treatment1 has called some attention to the ,sermon since its delivery1 ,i have thought it right to comply with the request of some respected members of the ,congregation1 and commit it to the chances of publication4 ,in so doing1 ,i have made no attempt to supply its many deficiencies1 nor have ,i even removed from its opening sentences an allusion to other ,sermons of which it formed the continuation4 ,,doncaster1 ,september #d1 #ahfh4 ,a ,,sermon4 ,why repair ye not the breaches of the house8 #b ,kings xii4 #g4 ,,the ,house is the ,temple4 ,we have travelled1 therefore1 from the north to the south of ,palestine1 from the capital of ,israel to the capital of ,judah4 ,as soon as the two great prophets1 ,elijah and ,elisha1 are no more1 the interest of the story centres no longer in the kingdom of the ten tribes3 it reverts to the stock of ,david1 and finds its latest gleam of beauty and glory in the national reformations and personal pieties of ,hezekiah and ,josiah4 ,elisha is not yet dead3 but he has ceased to occupy the sacred page after the anointing of ,jehu1 until he appears once more1 and finally1 in the striking incidents of his death-bed and his grave4 ,meanwhile that ,baal-worship which ,jehu has extirpated in the north1 has found refuge in the southern realm1 under the fostering patronage of a daughter of the house of ,ahab4 ,jehoram1 son of ,jehoshaphat1 had married a second ,jezebel1 in the person of her daughter ,athaliah4 ,jehoram reigned eight years1 and was succeeded by his son ,ahaziah1 who perished1 as we read last ,sunday1 with his uncle ,jehoram1 son of ,ahab1 king of ,israel1 under the hand of the avenging ,jehu1 the scourge of ,god4 ,then ,athaliah1 seeing that her son was dead1 determined to reign for herself4 ,she was one of those masculine spirits1 one of those heroines of pride and crime1 who can brook no puny1 infant sovereigns2 she could not live to be ruled by a grandchild2 and so she took the decisive step of destroying all the seed royal1 after which1 it is said1 ,athaliah1 late the queen-mother1 did reign over the land4 ,but it is seldom1 on this earth--which is still ,god's1 however much1 at certain times1 the devil may claim it for his own--it is seldom1 ,i say1 that crime is quite prosperous1 quite thorough3 something is forgotten in every murder1 which rises at last into a testimony2 and some one1 some little babe perhaps1 is overlooked in every massacre2 there is a sister1 it may be1 or an aunt--as it was here--whose heart yearns over that little cradle1 and who contrives to rescue its unconscious occupant to be the heir of the throne and the avenger of the family4 ,such was ,king ,joash2 rescued by his aunt ,jehosheba from her own mother's fury1 and by her hidden1 during six years of earliest childhood1 in one of the chambers of the ,temple--for she was the wife of ,jehoiada1 the ,high ,priest4 ,in his seventh year1 there was a conspiracy1 a revolution1 and a coronation4 ,the little ,king was shown to the people in the temple-court1 the crown was put upon him1 the testimony 7or book of the law7 was given him1 he was made and he was anointed1 and all the people clapped their hands1 and said1 ,god save the king4 ,and when the usurping grandmother1 attracted by the tumult1 came upon the scene1 with the cry1 ,treason1 treason6 the ,high ,priest had her forth without the ranges2 she was allowed to pass unmolested through the crowd and through the guard1 till she was outside the consecrated ground2 and there she was slain4 ,this was the curious1 memorable entrance of the little ,king ,joash upon a reign of forty years in ,jerusalem4 ,you can imagine how that scene must have printed itself on his memory4 ,it must have given a strange1 a solemn importance to the house of ,god1 and all its belongings4 ,the recollection of that sudden command1 given by the ,high ,priest1 his uncle1 preserver1 and king-maker1 ,have her forth without the ranges1 must have written upon his heart an indelible impression of the sacredness of that spot which could thus arrest revolution and make the most righteous doom impious4 ,you will not wonder1 therefore1 if his young thoughts were first turned1 as a ,sovereign1 to the wretched1 the dilapidated state of the ,temple itself4 ,it appears that1 on the one hand1 there were long1 careless arrears of temple income3 people had grown indifferent to the payment of their most unquestionable dues to the ,altar and the ,priesthood3 on the other hand1 there was a positive as well as a negative defalcation2 for on that sacred height of ,mount ,zion there had arisen1 side by side with ,god's ,temple1 a rival shrine of ,baal2 and the idolatress ,athaliah1 with her creatures1 seems to have taken from the one to build the other3 in short1 the very foundation and wall-stones of the ,holy ,house had been gradually pillaged and carted away1 and the ,house itself stood a monument at once of modern shame and ancestral glory1 needing the builder's hand to restore it to decency and even to safety4 ,as for the vessels of the ,house--all those costly priceless treasures with which the wealth and piety of king ,solomon had filled it--they had gone1 bit by bit1 to buy off the annoyances of powerful neighbours3 ,king ,rehoboam1 at the very outset of the schism1 had given ,shishak ,solomon's shields of gold1 and replaced them with pitiful shameful shields of brass3 it was too late1 or too soon1 to think of ornament--the present question was one entirely of use and substantial repair4 ,it seems that even the efforts and injunctions of the young ,king were for many years ineffectual4 ,in the twenty-third year of his reign the old breaches were still unrepaired4 ,it is astonishing--men would not believe till they had tried it--how long it takes to re-awaken one slumbering conscience1 or indeed to make one desired work of reparation1 be it never so small--we see it ourselves at this moment in a side-chapel of this ,church--a fact accomplished4 ,and so ,king ,joash1 stung to the soul by the disappointment of his own good intentions1 summons before him ,jehoiada the ,priest1 his own uncle and benefactor1 and expostulates with him and his brother-priests in the words of the text1 ,why repair ye not the breaches of the ,house8 ,and the result of it is1 that1 instead of leaving the money received for this purpose in the unaccountable hands of the ,priests1 they have a chest made1 with a hole bored in the lid of it1 and set beside the altar2 and the ,priests are to put all the money which they receive into this chest2 and then they have a civil auditor1 the ,king's scribe1 a sort of ,secretary of ,state1 to act with the ,high ,priest in counting and applying the sums thus accumulated1 and so it passes direct into the hands of the carpenters and builders1 and the work is done4 ,my brethren1 you will all perceive why ,i chose this text this evening1 when we are making our first collection1 under altered circumstances1 for the more substantial part of our annual expenditure upon this ,church4 ,it is true1 this ,house of ,prayer is not in all respects like ,solomon's ,temple3 ,i mean that1 in ,christian times1 it is not the fabric1 it is the ,congregation1 which is the ,temple or ,house of ,god4 ,nevertheless1 without a fabric a congregation is a rope of sand3 there must be a place if there is to be a worship3 and therefore the distinction1 though true1 may be overstrained2 and ,i am not afraid to apply to this ,church1 the building ,i mean1 the expostulation of ,king ,joash with ,jehoiada and the ,priests1 ,why repair ye not the breaches of the ,house8 ,i have not1 indeed1 one moment's anxiety as to your response4 ,you love the place1 this place at least1 where ,god's honour dwelleth4 ,i believe that your periodical offerings on this monthly occasion will be almost1 or perhaps quite1 equal to those which you make for any work of piety or charity3 and ,i may remind you that there is an especial reason why your offerings should be large at the outset1 inasmuch as already four months are gone by of the current year1 and we have to supply in eight months the resources 7as they hereafter will be7 of twelve4 ,but on this point ,i feel an entire security4 ,you will never allow those who undertake the office of your ,churchwardens to incur any responsibility but such as you cheerfully guarantee to them4 ,i will rather take the opportunity of saying one word upon the more general question4 ,we have never in this place--certainly not for many years past--laid a compulsory church-rate4 ,we have always allowed those who would to refuse payment4 ,even when the law was clearly with us1 we have never taken advantage of it4 ,so far1 we might1 if we would1 have regarded the new ,act as confirming and stereotyping our own local custom4 ,but there were these two differences4 ,we could no longer carry with us the influence1 the persuasion1 of an unenforced compulsion4 ,we could no longer say1 as heretofore1 ,he that may command1 entreats4 ,henceforth it was lawful to refuse4 ,again1 we could no longer extend our payments over the whole ,town2 and1 with whatever abatements from caprice or principle1 hope to enlist1 in the work of reparation or maintenance1 the sympathies of an entire population4 ,it became necessary1 therefore1 that we should look to the ,congregation alone2 and1 in one form or in another1 ask those to support1 who really love and use1 this ,house of ,god4 ,hence our appeal to you this evening4 ,and if on future occasions the appeal is commonly made to you in silence1 without special enforcement from this place1 yet let me hope that you will all register it in your minds as a just claim1 and not suffer these periodical gatherings to lose their interest or to fail in their amount4 ,why repair ye not the breaches of the ,house8 ,the subject expands itself before us1 and we read the remonstrance as applying no longer to the fabric1 but rather to these three larger and more sacred topics1 the ,congregation1 the ,church1 the soul4 #a4 ,that anxiety which we do not feel about the fabric1 for we are sure that you will attend to it1 we cannot stifle as regards the ,congregation4 ,for indeed it is this which makes the ,house4 ,the building is only valuable1 only significant1 for the sake of the inmates4 ,when it is asked of us1 ,why repair ye not the bleaches of the ,house8 we may look up indeed at our broken pinnacles1 our not watertight roof1 our falling flowers1 our patchwork pomegranates1 and think that these too require attention or deserve reproach2 but1 after all1 these are not the real things2 these altogether make not the ,house2 the ,house1 the ,temple1 now1 in these days of spirit and ,gospel1 is the community1 the congregation1 the living body within4 ,how is it with this8 ,are there no breaches here1 visible not to an eye of flesh1 but to ,one who seeth in secret8 ,for example1 my brethren1 is there not too great a disproportion here between the real and the nominal worshippers8 ,is it not lamentable1 is it not even discreditable1 that so many should be present at one ,service once on the ,lord's ,day1 and so few at any other ,service either on this ,holy ,day or on any other8 that so many should come together here this evening to listen to music or preaching1 so few to pray and to praise1 so few to break the ,holy ,bread1 or to drink the ,sacred ,wine8 ,is not this one of the breaches of the ,house1 the spiritual house1 which wants repairing amongst us8 #b4 ,but this carries me on to a somewhat wider field1 which ,i have called not the ,congregation1 but the ,church4 ,and here1 as is natural indeed in these eventful1 these quickly moving times1 my thoughts are upon our own ,church1 that communion which is the congregation of congregations2 that communion which we have heretofore known as the ,church of ,england by law established4 ,so rapid has been the course of events in late years--,i might single out the last ten1 or the last five1 or 7quite by exception7 the last year of all--that ,church-people must prepare themselves1 ,i feel sure1 for a speedy1 a scarcely gradual1 demolition of all that has been distinctive1 all that has been exceptionally advantageous1 in their position4 ,an eminent man and excellent ,bishop1 who was laid in his grave last ,friday1 was wont to say1 ,if ,i live ten years1 ,i shall be the last ,bishop of ,peterborough4 ,it is more than probable that some of my younger hearers this evening may live not only to see what we call the ,church of ,england thrown altogether upon voluntary offerings for its maintenance--in which case some of them may remember in old age the first collection made in the ,parish ,church of ,doncaster for the repairs of its fabric and the expences of its services--but also to find it at least an open1 perhaps a very doubtful1 question1 to whom shall belong the ,churches themselves and the glebe-houses--whether indeed there shall be left to the old ,church of ,england1 as we still fondly call it1 any vestige of that legal standing which has made her hitherto the calm shelter of her children1 the admiring wonder of foreigners1 and the mark of obloquy or envy 7as the case might be7 to thousands of her domestic enemies4 ,i am far from regarding this prospect--be it far off or near--with unmixed alarm or dismay4 ,i never believed that the ,establishment1 as such1 was ,christ's ,church in ,england1 or that the withdrawal of the favour of the ,state would be the putting out in our communion of the ,divine ,shechinah4 ,it is not so much for the ,church that ,i fear3 for ,i firmly believe ,christ's words1 ,lo1 ,i am with you alway1 and doubt not that the old1 the everlasting benediction is able to repeat itself in many new1 many diverse forms4 ,i do fear something for the ,state1 when it ceases to have a religion4 ,i do fear something for the average tone of religion in our cottages and in our palaces1 when there is no longer one form of worship which has upon it the stamp of pedigree and of custom2 when it is an evenly balanced question with every man and with every family1 ,whither shall ,i go this day for ,god's worship8 whither1 or whether any whither8 ,i do fear that there will be more and more in many houses of a cold indifferent scepticism1 a ,christless education and a ,godless life4 ,i do fear that more and more may reach old age ignorant of a ,saviour1 and go to their graves without any sure and certain hope of a resurrection to eternal life4 ,for the ,church itself ,i fear not4 ,in so far as the ,church of ,england 7so called7 has had ,christ in her and ,god with her1 she is indestructible and immortal4 ,in so far as she has trusted in outward advantage1 and suffered herself1 in her priests or in her people1 to become sluggish1 lukewarm1 contemptuous1 or persecuting--in so far let a change into adversity--,god grant it--reform her4 ,the great question for all of us1 in our several stations1 more especially in the days which are now coming1 or almost come1 upon our ,church1 must be this one of the text1 ,why repair ye not the breaches of the ,house8 ,let the ,priests of the ,temple ask it--ask it of themselves--,are they trusting at all in the advantages of an ,establishment1 and negligent1 in the same degree1 of that personal industry1 of that individual self-sacrifice1 which alone can justify their endowment1 maintain their honour1 or do their work8 ,if the ,established ,church of ,england1 as such1 be swept away1 then1 along with it1 will go all idle1 inconsistent1 scandalous ,ministers3 those who are to serve at ,god's ,altar afterwards must be only such as are respected by their people3 let it not have to be said that ,england would gain as much as she loses by ceasing to have an endowed1 an established ,ministry1 inasmuch as1 quite as often as not1 the ,parish ,minister was an indolent1 an unworthy1 or an inefficient man6 ,this is the way in which the ,priests must set themselves to repair the ,temple-breaches4 ,then for the ,people4 ,to what end does a ,church exist amongst us8 ,to what purpose this costly1 this almost magnificent apparatus of vestment and ritual1 of ,cathedral ,church and elaborate minstrelsy8 ,does it mean anything1 or nothing8 ,if it represents to the country1 in symbol and form1 the wants of man's soul1 and the absolute necessity of a ,divine communion1 then prove it by the using6 ,do not talk of the duty of the ,state1 of the rights of the ,church1 of ,apostolical ,succession and an authorized ,ministry--and never use any6 ,when the ,church of ,england ceases1 with our will or without it1 to be an established1 privileged1 or favoured ,church at all2 then1 how many of you will be found to come forward in its maintenance8 ,how many of you will worship here1 when there is no longer any traditional or conventional propriety in doing so8 ,how many will accept their position1 in reference to man1 as only one out of fifty or a hundred denominations--treat with all respect and charity others who follow not with them--and yet1 for themselves1 become but the more earnest and devout ,churchmen1 in proportion as ,state aid and legal endowment become things of the past--things1 it may be1 of remote and almost forgotten history8 ,and1 meanwhile1 let me ask this of the ,churchmen here assembled this evening1 ,are we half as liberal--,i ask it advisedly--in giving for the maintenance of our ,church1 as are many bodies of ,nonconformists in their offerings for theirs8 ,you know that we are not4 ,let us look about us in this matter4 ,let us rise to the emergency4 ,show that you value your ,church1 by giving bountifully in her behalf4 ,if the ,church is what you profess it to be1 surely it is worth something1 something even of self-sacrifice1 to maintain it in its efficiency4 ,you know that there are many amongst us to whom the ,church costs nothing4 ,on one pretext and another1 they evade all her burdens4 ,they grudge the very rents of their sittings2 and if those rents were exchanged to-morrow 7as ,i would they were7 for ,offertories1 still they would give nothing4 ,my brethren1 these things ought not so to be4 ,by this grudging1 this ungenerous spirit1 we are drawing down upon ourselves1 as a judgment1 the sentence of disestablishment and disendowment4 ,be it not so amongst us6 ,count no money better spent than that which is given for the repairing of the breaches of this ,house2 meaning now by the ,house1 not only or chiefly the fabric1 but rather the purpose for which the fabric stands--the edification and salvation of human souls4 ,above all1 see that you rightly1 earnestly1 industriously use the means of grace herein afforded you4 ,what would not they give1 who are gone from us this last week by disease or accident1 unrepentant1 unredeemed1 for one such feast of love as was accepted this morning by but six and twenty souls--for one such opportunity as we have enjoyed this evening of drawing nigh to the ,throne of ,grace through our one ,divine ,lord8 #c4 ,thus1 then1 we pass naturally1 in conclusion1 to that ,house1 or ,temple of ,god1 which is of all the most intimate1 the most sacred1 the most inaccessible2 yet in which1 if anywhere1 the true fire burns of an acceptable sacrifice--the real altar is built of lively1 living1 devoted stones4 ,that ,house is the soul2 and it1 too1 has its breaches4 ,yes1 we know it4 ,that ,temple--which ought to lie four-square1 which ought to have everything in its place1 which ought to be gleaming with the fire of the ,holy ,ghost1 and adorned with the precious stones of a meek and quiet and pure and ,godward spirit--that ,temple1 of which the light ought to be shining through into the life1 and making every act and word and thought gracious and beneficent and ,god-recalling--that ,temple is all jagged and disordered and spotted and sin-stained--that ,temple lets its altar-fire go out every half-hour1 and suffers a darkness that may be felt to settle down upon its chambers--making unbelievers at last say1 ,if that be faith1 give me reason2 if that be piety1 give me conscience2 if that indeed be religion1 let me know only the heathen's revelation--of good sense1 good nature1 and an elevated self-love6 ,why repair ye not the breaches of the ,house8 ,do we answer1 ,i cannot8 ,it is a reproach1 it is a calumny1 upon the ,gospel of ,divine grace4 ,that is the very revelation of the ,gospel--,god giveth more grace3 more1 as we need more2 more1 as we ask more2 more1 as we look and wait and make room for more4 ,i cannot8 ,no2 but ,god can4 ,ask1 and ye shall have4 ,or do we answer1 ,i need not8 ,i am well enough as ,i am--,god is very merciful--,he knows our frame1 and whatever deficiencies ,he sees in me1 ,christ will make them up8 ,alas6 it is too often the evangelical reply--if not with the lips1 then in the heart6 ,christ died to make sin less sinful1 to make sin less dangerous1 by substituting a figment of justification for a reality of holiness1 watchfulness1 and self-control6 ,thus even the ,blessed ,lord ,himself is made a minister of sin1 and man turns the very table of his blessing into a new occasion of falling6 ,or do we answer1 finally1 ,i will not8 ,i love the breaches of my soul's house2 ,i do not wish that the gusts of passion should be fenced out2 ,i do not wish that there should be no crack or cranny through which ,i may peep out on the world's vanities1 nor any secret neglected postern through which some delicious delirious lust may creep in to intoxicate me8 ,oh6 worst of all1 most hopeless1 this last answer--the answer of many consciences1 will they but speak1 in this great ,congregation2 the answer which not only virtually denies1 but wilfully refuses1 the ,gospel2 which makes the ,cross an offence1 and ,christ to have died in vain6 ,may it please ,god1 by some one of ,his thousand1 ,his myriad agencies1 to make us feel6 to bring us to our knees in hearty repentance before ,him2 and then1 even as it is written1 humbling ourselves first under ,his mighty hand1 at last to exalt us in due time6 ,,recent ,,works ,,by ,,dr4 ,c4 ,j4 ,,vaughan4 ,,the ,,church ,,of ,,the ,,first ,,days4
