,,lamb4 ,one fine summer's morning1 little ,susan's mother called her to come and have her breakfast4 ,she took her porringer1 and sat down on a green bank near the cottage door to eat the bread and milk she had that morning1 and liked it very much1 as she did not always have milk for breakfast4 ,while ,susan was eating her breakfast1 she thought about a very pretty book1 which had been given her the week before as a reward for her regular attendance at the ,sunday ,school1 during the last half year2 for it had pleased ,god that she should enjoy good health1 and ,susan knew too well the value of what she learned at the ,sunday school1 ever to be absent when she could attend4 ,i never heard of her playing about on a ,sunday with rude idle children1 she knew that would be breaking the ,sabbath1 and she desired to keep it holy4 ,which children do you think are the happiest1 those who play about1 and get into mischief on a ,sunday1 or those good children who attend public worship and endeavour to keep holy the ,sabbath day8 ,while ,susan was eating her breakfast1 she thought about her reward book1 as ,i told you--it was 8,little ,jane1 the ,,young ,,cottager10 and she wished that she might love the ,saviour and be happy like 8,little ,jane40 ,when she had nearly finished her porringer1 a man came by driving some sheep1 which he was going to sell at the next town4 ,several of the sheep had little lambs with them1 and some of these poor little creatures were so tired that they could hardly walk4 ,one little lamb laid down just as it came to the place where ,susan was sitting4 ,the man tried to make it get up1 but it could not rise1 and seemed to be dying4 8,well10 said he1 8,i'll have your skin at any rate40 ,so saying1 he was about to tie its legs together1 and take it upon his shoulder1 when ,susan spoke to him1 and begged very hard that he would leave the little lamb with her1 and she would nurse it4 8,why1 as for that10 said the man1 8,i suppose ,i might as well give it you at once1 for ,i don't reckon you can make much hand of it2 and ,i think ,i'll e'en give it to you1 for now ,i recollect1 you are the little girl who ran after me over the common last summer1 and told me of the boys who had driven two of my best sheep down yonder lane2 ,i should not have found them again in a hurry1 if it had not been for you4 ,well1 if you like to have the lamb1 take it and much good may it do you40 ,he then called his dog1 and drove his sheep on4 ,susan thanked him2 she put down her porringer1 and took up the lamb1 and began to think what she should do with it3 its eyes were shut1 and it seemed dying4 8,well10 said she1 8it is no great matter to you1 for ,i suppose they would have killed you to-morrow or next day1 but ,i should have liked you to have lived and played with me4 ,i would have tried to be kind to you1 for the ,bible says1 we are to be merciful to poor dumb creatures like you4 ,god made you1 as well as me1 and ,i recollect it is written1 #8that his tender mercies are over all his works4'0 ,while she was talking in this manner1 the lamb opened its eyes a little way1 and gave a faint bleat4 ,susan was delighted4 8,poor little thing1 perhaps you are hungry10 said she1 and taking her spoon1 she put a little of the milk into its mouth1 and to her great joy saw that it was swallowed4 ,susan then gave the lamb some more1 and wrapped it up closer in her apron4 ,it soon revived with the warmth1 and presently was able to stand1 it then went to the porringer and drank the rest of ,susan's breakfast2 you may be sure she did not grudge it4 ,susan now went to her mother1 and told all that had happened1 and showed her the little lamb4 ,her mother said she might put it upon the grass-plot behind the cottage4 ,the little girl did so1 and before night it was quite well again4 ,susan had to go every day to work1 but you may be sure she did not neglect her little lamb2 every morning when she had her own breakfast1 she went and fed it very carefully2--and the lamb was always ready to come as soon as it heard her little mistress call4 ,do not you think ,susan felt very happy when she looked at the little lamb8 ,she had been kind to it1 and felt much more pleased than if she had not taken any care about it4 ,i have known little boys1 and girls too1 who have taken pleasure in teazing poor animals1 but ,i have always remarked that they were bad children4 ,those who can take pleasure in killing flies1 or hurting dumb creatures1 would delight in tormenting their brothers and sisters1 or companions1 if they dared to do so2 and when they grow up to be men and women1 unless their evil habits are broken off1 they will prove to be wicked people4 ,our hearts are naturally inclined to do what is evil1 and will always take pleasure therein1 if they are not changed by divine grace4 ,this is what ,jesus told ,nicodemus1 as you may read in the third chapter of ,saint ,john4 ,little ,susan had been taught this4 ,she felt that it was true1 and prayed to ,god to give her a new heart4 ,she prayed that she might love ,christ and believe in him4 ,christ has said that those who ask shall receive2 and in the book of ,proverbs1 which speaks of him as the ,true ,wisdom1 we read that those who seek him early shall find him4 ,now1 if ,susan had not thought about these things1 and been led to desire to do what was right1 perhaps she would have helped the naughty boys in driving away the sheep1 instead of telling them1 as she had done1 that it was wrong1 and following after their owner when she found they would not do what was right4 ,when we see others do wrong1 we should always try to persuade them to leave their evil ways2 but if they will not listen to us1 then we should do all we can to prevent them from succeeding4 ,the lamb soon grew very fond of ,susan1 and followed her about every where4 ,if she was absent from home longer than usual1 it would lie down before the cottage door1 and watch for her1 and as soon as she returned1 it would frisk about and look quite happy4 ,it was just the same with ,susan's companions1 they were always glad to see her1 because she was gentle and kind to them4 ,when ,i have seen little boys and girls cross1 and teazing each other1 ,i have sometimes wondered why they could like to make others uncomfortable1 for ,i have always observed that they did not look happy themselves4 ,but when ,i recollected that the ,bible tells us1 that the heart of man is naturally inclined to do evil1 ,i have not wondered any longer at what ,i have seen4 ,i then thought how very sad it was1 that children did not love the ,saviour1 for then they would have tried to be like him1 and would have been much happier4 ,i have longed to tell them about ,christ1 and how pleasant it is to know him1 and to love him4 ,sometimes when little boys and girls have read 8,janeway's ,token for ,children10 and other little books which told them about children who have loved ,christ1 they have desired to be like them4 ,susan was like these good children2 and if a poor man came to ask charity1 she was always glad if her mother could spare any thing for him4 ,remember1 that the ,saviour came down from heaven to seek and to save that which is lost2 he died upon the cross that we might be cleansed from our sins by his precious blood1 and he suffered for us1 that we might be sanctified or made holy by the power and influence of his holy ,spirit1 and thus be made the children of ,god1 and heirs of his kingdom4 ,my dear children1 do you love the ,saviour8 ,do you wish to be like him1 kind1 merciful1 patient1 and 8of great goodness80 ,your little hearts will tell you whether you really desire this1 and if you are still strangers to him1 pray that he will by the power of his holy ,spirit1 teach you to know him and to love him4 ,if you refuse to listen to these things1 and do not seek the ,saviour1 you will be unhappy in this world1 and miserable in that which is to come4 ,i have a little more to tell you about ,susan and her ,lamb4 ,susan's mother spun its wool every year1 and if you had gone to the cottage on a winter evening1 you would have seen her busy with her spinning-wheel1 while ,susan and her brothers were employed in other works1 and one of them read aloud the ,bible1 or some useful book4 ,after the wool was spun1 ,susan knit stockings for herself and her brothers1 which they found very warm and comfortable in the winter4 ,in the course of a few years1 the lamb grew up and had several other little lambs1 so that in time ,susan had a flock of sheep1 which were a great help to the family4 ,she was very glad that she had gone to the ,sunday school1 and had been taught the texts1 which made her wish to be kind to the little lamb4 ,i hope my little readers will try to remember all that they read in their ,bibles1 remembering that the ,bible tells us the commands of ,god1 and in keeping his precepts there is great reward4 ,,the ,,end ,,the
