garment of ,christ4 ,forms and ceremonies well may serve the interest of missions1 but woe be the day when missions are wrested to serve the interest of a form or polity4 ,still another danger lies in the allurements of expedients4 ,the constant fluctuations in human affairs serve to unsettle the faith and to relax the hold on the steady1 enduring methods which alone can give success4 ,it is never to be forgotten that while the surface may have the appearance of a refluent stream when contending with the elements1 yet ,god's cause is imbedded in the deep under-current and moves right on despite apiece4 ,those who attend are quite sure to pass4 ,it is wise for the ,fisk student to be at that institute1 pay his fee and pass1 for when that institute is over the time for getting a school in that county is up4 ,this state of things does not exist in all places1 let us hope not in many1 but it does in some4 ,it is quite a common rule never to give a first-class certificate1 no matter what the scholarship1 to a colored student1 as in most ,states it increases his pay1 and perhaps it would not seem fit for a colored boy or girl to get a better certificate than some white young man or woman4 ,,prof4 ,,albert ,,salisbury4 ,it is hard to realize1 even when we make the conscious effort1 how much of the general culture1 intelligence1 and power of the ,american people is due to the habit of reading4 ,that there is not a more marked and easily discernible difference between the intelligence and practical efficiency of the college-bred man and of the man of less training is largely due to the fact that the one reads as widely and continually as the other4 ,even superficial and omnivorous reading is an efficient source of intelligence and power4 ,so universal is this habit of reading among the native-born people of the ,northern ,states1 that it is hard for them to conceive of its absence4 ,it costs us an effort to imagine the mental status of a person who cannot or does not read4 ,yet there are millions of people in the ,south who cannot read and millions more who do not4 ,it is one thing to teach a child how to read2 it is quite another thing to make him love to read1 to give him the habit of reading4 ,and the first has comparatively little value without the other4 ,it is of little moment that a million children have been taught the art of reading if they do not practice it freely4 ,now the fact is that of the hundreds of thousands who have been in the freedmen's schools but a very small part have ever formed the reading habit4 ,and1 as one consequence1 even college graduates of the colored race have far less general intelligence and intellectual efficiency than white people of much more limited education4 ,there is nothing singular or unaccountable about this4 ,it is the natural consequence of the circumstances existing4 ,the parents of these young people were slaves1 to whom reading was a forbidden art4 ,in their houses1 highly as the ability to read may be prized1 and earnestly as it may be sought for their children1 there are as yet no books1 no magazines1 no newspapers even4 ,if1 indeed1 there be any printed thing there1 it is almost without exception of the most trashy1 crude1 and worthless1 if not vile and corrupting1 sort1 from both the literary and the moral point of view4 ,the dime novel1 the 8,fireside ,companion10 the sloshy1 ungrammatical local newspaper are1 at the best1 all that one may hope to find4 ,in cultured homes1 children acquire the habit of reading by contagion4 ,it is fairly bred into them4 ,but in the homes of the freedmen there is no contagious example1 and there can be none4 ,there is for the colored youth no inheritance of culture in any way4 ,children in ,northern homes take in more of culture through the skin1 by unconscious absorption1 in the first ten years of life than the freedmen's children can ever acquire except by long years of schooling4 ,from the consideration of these facts1 two conclusions follow--first1 that for the intellectual uplifting of the colored race it is absolutely essential that the reading habit be established in some way2 and1 second1 that it should be the active endeavor of all the missionary schools to devise and employ the best agencies for stimulating and establishing this habit4 ,now comes the practical question1 ,what are the instrumentalities by which we can implant and cultivate the love of profitable and elevating reading8 ,of course1 something may be done in the regular course of instruction4 ,reading in school may be so taught as to give real culture of taste and appreciation4 ,the sips of good literature found in the reading-books may be so used as to create a desire to drink freely at the fountain-head2 though it is to be confessed that many teachers fail lamentably in this direction4 ,the student of history or geography may and should be pushed out of his text-book into the wide field from which text-books are gleaned4 ,yet all this has much of the flavor of the daily task about it4 ,can anything be done to make the act of reading more spontaneous1 to make it seem more like an indulgence and a recreation than an exaction and a duty8 ,the answer need not be a negative4 ,it is to be found in reading-rooms1 wisely placed and planned4 ,and much stress is to be laid on these qualifications4 ,the first requisite for a reading-room is accessibility4 ,it must be placed where it can be got at easily and continually4 ,a locked-up library1 open only once or twice a week at a stated hour1 with the issue of books held under formal regulations is utterly futile as a means of creating the reading habit2 it is useful only for those who have the habit already formed4 ,a reading-room must not only be conveniently placed where the pupils can not escape it1 as it were1 but it must also be open at all times2 so that in all the moments of leisure1 whether in the hours set apart for labor or those for recreation1 there may be the freest access1 that even 8he that runs0 may read a little4 ,it1 therefore1 becomes almost a necessity in a boarding-school that there be two reading-rooms1 one for each sex4 ,the second requirement for success is that the reading matter be well chosen1 selected with regard to the ends in view4 ,it is absurd to suppose that reading matter so stale1 dull or obstruse as to have no longer any value among a reading people should be worth sending to a people who have not yet learned to read4 ,musty libraries of defunct ministers are even more useless in a freedmen's school than at the ,north4 ,discarded ,sunday-school books are little better2 for in any library the readable books are worn to pieces before the rest are given away4 ,old files of religious or other newspapers have their uses2 but to make a reading-room tempting is not one of them4 ,the matter in a reading-room should be fresh1 interesting1 and adapted to the mental condition of those for whom it is provided2 otherwise it cannot be either profitable or inspiring4 ,the newspapers must contain current news4 ,the magazines must be adapted to the pupil's stage of development1 which is1 so far as reading is concerned1 usually the juvenile stage4 ,freedmen's children are not yet ready1 to any considerable extent1 for philosophy or high art4 ,the books--for there should be books as well as papers in our reading-rooms--should be fresh1 well printed1 and1 above all1 illustrated4 ,good pictures1 such as are found in the recent publications of the ,harpers and ,scribner1 illuminate the words of the book for these young people as nothing else can4 ,and a book closely printed1 on poor paper1 without illustration1 is a tax on any reader but the confirmed book-worm4 ,the books should relate1 largely1 to the world in its external aspects and to human achievement--books of travel and adventure1 of history in its romantic phases1 the great deeds of great men1 whether knights of war or labor4 ,to be specific1 such books as ,knox's ,boy ,traveler series1 ,coffin's ,histories1 ,butterworth's ,zizzag ,journeys1 ,swiss ,family ,robinson1 and even the productions of ,jules ,verne1 placed within the easy and constant reach of our pupils1 would be the most effective means imaginable for securing the valuable result desired4 ,were they well printed and illustrated1 ,i would add to the above list the old-time 8,rollo ,books40 ,indeed1 the list given is but a fragment of that which might now be made up4 ,among the periodicals1 ,wide ,awake1 ,st4 ,nicholas1 and ,harper's ,young ,people should have a prominent place alongside the ,century and ,harper's ,weekly and ,monthly4 ,i have not time to dwell upon the moral results1 even more important than the intellectual ones1 sure to come from the employment of the means herein imperfectly indicated2 but ,i am sure that reading-rooms such as ,i have in mind can be made a most valuable auxiliary of our work in its best and highest purposes4 ,if any persons chancing to read this1 desire fuller information with a view to co-operation in a good work1 ,i shall be happy to receive communications from them at any time4 99 99 99 99 99 ,a educating others4 ,they will find1 too1 from these reports that in all these years white men and women of learning and culture have labored1 often in the face of prejudice and within earshot of contumely and hate4 ,what these missionaries have done1 the world at large has made little note of1 but the days are not far distant when everywhere1 through the ,south at least1 it will be acknowledged as the greatest of all the great works accomplished in the ,united ,states since #ahfe4 ,from the ,potomac almost to the ,rio ,grande the academies and colleges of the ,american ,missionary ,society are to be found at nearly all the large centers of population1 and they are flourishing because their work is a practical work and their purpose the plain one of widening and deepening the stream of learning at which the once slaves of the ,south may drink freely and at will4 ,these institutions are the results of a generous benevolence1 and have been maintained by a self-denying zeal worthy of the glorious ,luther1 whose birth a grateful world is everywhere celebrating with gladness4 ,we recommend them to read the reports of the ,rev4 ,atticus ,g4 ,haygood1 of ,oxford1 ,ga41 who1 since he wrote the ,brother in ,black1 has launched into the work of furthering the education of the ,negro with the zeal of a missionary1 and the spirit of a soldier in a noble cause4 ,dr4 ,haygood1 not long ago1 made a tour of the ,south in the interest of the fund for which he is the dispensing agent1 and the result is a more fervent devotion to the good work and more fervid and appealing speeches in its behalf4 ,a gallant ex-,confederate1 a ,southerner by birth and breeding1 and the son of a slaveholder1 brought up1 too1 in a wealthy planting section of ,georgia1 he entered upon his1 at first1 self-appointed task as a mere private1 a volunteer in the ranks where he found so many noble workers4 ,but his knowledge of the ,negro1 of his capacity1 and his needs1 and the best methods of reaching practical educational results soon marked him for the high position he now occupies as the trusted and confidential agent of a fund bequeathed by a benevolent ,northern man1 whose desire for the advancement and betterment of the ,negro ,dr4 ,haygood is furthering by helping all the schools at the ,south that have these for their objects4 ,already1 in the first year of the existence of the fund1 this good1 strong man finds encouraging results following upon what he has expended of it1 and he pleads on every possible occasion with voice and pen for the extension of the practical system of education so long pursued by the ,american ,missionary ,association1 and in which he sees the best possibilities of the dark race4 ,dr4 ,haygood speaks plainly1 as well as eloquently4 ,he calls a spade a spade4 ,he does not spare any who set themselves in his way or in the way of the work he has so much at heart4 ,he knows that education makes every man better1 stronger and happier than he could be without it and he contends for its dissemination by compulsion if other means fail of making it general1 of bringing it into every man's house as essential to the maintenance of the peace that passes all understanding4 ,it is in the nature of things that such a man should encounter opposition2 that he should even be reviled1 abused and misrepresented1 but he has only to take counsel of those who have occupied the field he is now in during the past twenty years to find a sweet solace and a consolation for it all4 ,he can read in their lives the opening chapters of his own career in the field of ,negro education1 but he can also read of a generous if tardy recognition of their labors by the best educated men and women of the ,south1 who willingly ,indians1 where we saw established homes1 quite as good as those of their white neighbors4 ,we saw full-blooded ,indians in civilized dress1 riding their mowing-machines1 raking their hay1 and stacking their grain4 ,rev4 ,thomas ,riggs was away from home at the bedside of his venerable father in ,beloit1 but we were most kindly received by the lady missionaries in charge1 ,misses ,collins and ,irvine4 ,the mission home into which we were ushered1 is a long1 tastefully-built log-house1 standing sidewise to the road1 having in front two bay windows1 with porch between1 and in the rear a large lean-to attachment for kitchen and laundry4 ,the yard is beautiful with flowers and plants1 and hallowed by a little inner enclosure which holds the sacred dust of ,mrs4 ,riggs4 7,shown in the picture just to the left of the home47 ,the large mission garden would be famous in any neighborhood4 ,it is a sermon in vegetables and small fruits1 well cultivated and highly productive4 ,just east of the home is the little chapel1 a building capable of seating from #aej to #bjj persons1 having ceiled walls1 and seated with chairs2 having a neat pulpit and a good cabinet organ4 ,the interior of the home is most inviting4 ,the spacious sitting-room has little of luxury2 everything1 however1 is most cheery4 ,the walls are ceiled and adorned with pictures4 ,the bay window is beautiful with plants and vines and birds4 ,a ,steinway piano is at one end of the room1 statuettes here and there1 and books everywhere4 ,during the twenty-four hours of our stay1 our party wandered at liberty over the grounds1 visited the chapel1 were received by the ,indians in their homes1 and in the large room just described were several times entertained by their singing while their teachers led on the piano4 ,no honest enemy of ,indian missions could see and hear what we saw and heard1 without a change of heart4 ,time and again we were melted to tears4 ,our visit was entirely unexpected1 so nothing could be 8gotten up0 for our benefit4 ,we were the better pleased that it should be so4 ,everything was impromptu and natural4 ,the climax came unexpectedly just as we were about to go the next morning4 ,while two of the brethren were hitching the horses a party of ,indian women and two little boys1 who with their baskets were about to pass the door1 were called in by ,miss ,collins4 ,they hesitated1 and through their teacher apologized for their appearance1 explaining that they had just started on a berrying trip4 ,one of the men1 who had come on some errand1 was also invited in4 ,then
