promote the discussion and aid in its final and right settlement4 ,there are some good men and true who have written on this subject in a tone other than we would adopt1 but we give extracts no wish to influence the opinions of anybody1 believing1 as we do1 that no difficulties on this score are likely to arise4 ,on this point1 therefore1 our extracts are made with the utmost endeavor at next dry season1 which commences about ,november #a4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,the ,,nerve ,,of ,,missions4 ,the first effort on record1 so far as we know1 to cut the nerve of missions1 was made by ,satan himself in the ,garden of ,eden when he affirmed to our first parents1 8,thou shalt not surely die40 ,the reason for missions comes out in the great truth of ,scripture1 that men are lost without the ,gospel1 and are saved only by the ,gospel4 ,the advocacy of any view that relieves the mind of a sense of the lost condition of unbelievers cuts at the nerve of missions4 ,the purpose of ,god the ,father in sending his ,son was that 8,whosoever believeth in him might not perish40 ,the fact that ,christ came to seek and save the lost makes it clear that whatever serves to convince the world that men are not already1 and will not continue eternally to be1 lost without the obedience involved in the exercise of faith in ,christ1 runs counter to the whole drift of missionary endeavor4 ,the gospel of repentance was foremost in the preaching of ,john the ,baptist1 of ,christ and the ,apostles--repentance because 8,he will thoroughly purge his floor and gather his wheat into the garner1 but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire40 ,however much good may come from missions to civilization1 howsoever much they may add to the comfort1 the intelligence1 the personal enjoyment of those who may receive the benefit of them1 nevertheless the grand inspiring motive of missions is to save lost souls4 ,those in the closest sympathy with ,christ1 those who have consecrated themselves to work for him1 feel this most deeply4 ,there are many who appreciate the excellent example given us by our ,saviour when on earth1 many who are actuated by kindly impulses1 who wish well for the happiness of their fellow men here and hereafter2 but if these men fail to realize that ,christ's mission was to save the lost1 and that the lost can be saved only through the preaching of ,his cross1 they are not1 as a rule1 deeply interested in the work of promoting missionary efforts at home or abroad4 ,they do not manifest in any good degree the actuating power of any nerve of missions4 ,help must come1 progress must be made1 indeed1 the world must be brought to ,christ1 so far as we can see from history1 or from observation in the present generation1 by those who believe and are ready like ,christ himself to do all in their power to bring a lost world into the fullness and blessedness of the ,redeemer's kingdom4 ,illustration3 ,,the ,,john ,,brown ,,steamer4 99 99 99 99 99 ,,second ,,national ,,education ,,assembly4 ,this ,assembly1 to which reference was made in our ,july ,missionary1 was held at ,ocean ,grove1 ,aug4 #i1 #aj1 #aa and #ab1 for the purpose of bringing together prominent persons to awaken public sentiment in favor of aid for the education of the illiterate masses in our country4 ,the meetings were conducted by ,rev4 ,j4 ,c4 ,hartzell1 ,d4,d41 and the topics discussed embraced nearly every phase of educational work1 relating more especially1 however1 to the negroes1 the poor whites and the ,indians4 ,in our limited space1 we can give simply two or three leading features of the discussion4 ,the subject of ,national ,aid to ,education deservedly received large attention and found its way into addresses other than those on that particular topic4 ,secretary ,strieby presided during the session when it was considered1 and the time was occupied by ,prof4 ,painter1 ,hon4 ,j4 ,p4 ,wickersham1 ,senator ,h4 ,w4 ,blair and others4 ,mr4 ,wickersham gave a comprehensive rsum of the aid provided by foreign nations for schools1 pointing out its benefits and also its evils4 ,he argued that1 although it generally was the wisest and the only successful way for the people to provide education for themselves1 yet under conditions like those in a portion of our country1 help should be given by the government4 ,true patriotism1 he said1 requires us to keep an army of schoolmasters in the ,south now as much as it did to maintain an army of soldiers to put down the rebellion4 ,the urgency of national aid to education at once was emphasized by ,judge ,tourgee in the expression that ten million dollars for this purpose to-day would be worth more than ten thousand millions twenty years hence4 ,senator ,blair1 who recognizes fully the value of aggressive and thorough methods of reform1 declared1 and we think truly1 that if every leading newspaper would give one strong editorial urging the importance of national aid1 if every popular lecturer would devote one hour to public discussion of the subject1 and if every minister would preach one sermon in its advocacy1 the next ,congress would pass a bill for an appropriation for the purpose among its earliest acts1 and the people of the nation would applaud with hearty commendations4 ,the ,negro in ,america came up for a full share of attention at a morning session4 ,a goodly number of colored bishops1 doctors of divinity and professors in educational institutions were present4 ,their zeal for bringing about reform had been heightened by the fact1 that in so good and moral a community as ,ocean ,grove1 they were requested to occupy a dining-room by themselves1 near the kitchen1 in the house where they were entertained4 ,there was no color-line drawn1 however1 at the meeting4 ,dr4 ,rust1 who presided1 claimed that as the ,africans came to this country as invited guests1 that as we even sent our ships for them1 they were entitled to more respect than ordinary foreigners4 ,that respect was certainly accorded them on this occasion4 ,dr4 ,ward1 of the ,independent1 led off with a clear-cut address on the ,danger-,line in ,negro ,education1 setting forth the folly of those who hold that education unfits men for useful labor4 ,the gist of this topic he gave in a sentence3 8,we must educate or we perish40 ,rev4 ,j4 ,c4 ,price 7colored7 of ,north ,carolina1 urged that the ,negro must solve his problem by his own impressibility4 ,so fitting and eloquent were his words1 that when his limited time had expired1 the audience1 with prolonged applause1 refused to allow the next speaker to be called1 and it was only when the ,chairman assured them that ,mr4 ,price was but one colored orator among the many he had to bring forward and announced ,bishop ,campbell that the speakers were allowed to proceed4 ,dr4 ,tanner1 also colored1 read a paper on 8,the ,color-,line10 taking the ground that in this country there must be no class distinction1 but that we must be one people4 ,a new code of ethics1 he said1 was proposed1 a code not known in any other nation4 ,it was that equals may associate with equals1 if they are of the same color4 ,the session1 which had been participated in by two white speakers1 was brought to a close by ,bishop ,campbell1 whose good-natured appearance brought freshly to mind the anecdote that had just been told by ,rev4 ,j4 ,w4 ,hamilton1 of ,boston1 the pith of which was the reply of the black man1 that if the negro had no soul1 religion made his body feel mighty happy4 ,an evening was given for a public reception of missionaries1 teachers and preachers who have labored in the ,south from the ,north since the war1 about #aej of whom were present4 ,gen4 ,john ,eaton presided over the it should not be carried out4 ,but if we desire to secure a foothold for ,congregationalism among the respectable white people of the ,south1 and enlarge our borders in that direction1 we must adopt collision between the two systems2 7#c7 the impossibility of drawing any line of demarkation between the two systems of missions on the same ground1 except a color line3 the emphasizing of the color fortifying it by new vested interests1 and defeating any kindly tendency toward the effacing of it from the ,christian ,church4 ,such considerations as these led the congregation 7we can hardly say side by side8 ,the ,home ,missionary4 ,,dr4 ,,walker',s ,,address4 ,there is no man in this house who has1 to the limit of his ability1 done more cordial and earnest work for the ,american ,missionary ,association than ,i have4 ,there is no man who maintains a more cordial relationship with the secretaries and officers of that society than ,i do4 ,personally1 each one of them is my friend4 ,but ,i do feel1 ,christian friends1 that we have here a question that we must meet2 and the best way to meet it is in the spirit of frankness and openness1 giving it the deliberation which it requires4 ,the ,american ,missionary ,association1 as has been suggested in the paper which has been presented to you1 is1 in my view1 handicapped for doing a part of the work which is necessary to be done4 99 99 99 ,now the question is3 ,is it not expedient for us to enter upon that work8 ,i am met by the objection3 8,why1 you are doing the same work that the ,american ,missionary ,association is doing4 ,why have two societies1 side by side1 doing essentially the same work80 ,they are not doing the same work1 in the fact that the subjects for which they labor are providentially made distinct4 ,it is impossible in this generation1 and in the generation to come1 for the ,american ,missionary ,association to plant ,congregational churches to any considerable extent through the ,south4 ,now1 the plain and practical question is3 ,is it wise for us to neglect the present opportunity and1 for the sake of what may be proved after all to be but sentiment1 let the present moment pass1 a moment so freighted with consequences to the future8 ,is it wise for us to insist upon the strength of ecclesiastical ties as sufficient to hold men together1 whom we cannot counsel to come together by strength of natural ties8 ,we cannot advise marriage among the races2 why insist upon a kind of work that forces them together in ecclesiastical relationships to which they are equally unfamiliar and averse8 ,the ,home ,missionary4 ,,no ,,clashing ,,must ,,be ,,allowed4 ,,editorial ,,in ,,advance4 ,what the ,american ,missionary ,association has done1 and is doing1 is only the prophecy of what it is to do in the near future1 if it is promptly sustained in its noble work4 ,and while we are on this subject1 we wish most emphatically to say3 ,there is not to be1 there must not be1 any clashing in the work between this society and the ,american ,home ,missionary ,society4 ,the ,american ,missionary ,association was organized for a specific work1 broadly and definitely understood to be for the uplifting of the colored races on this continent4 ,to that work they are pledged1 for that money is given to them1 and they are very wisely administering the trust committed to their hands4 ,to criticise that society because it does not organize what are known as white churches is the height of folly1 and for it to attempt to force mixed churches on the ,south would be equally absurd4 ,the ,american ,home ,missionary ,society should not go down ,south with the idea of starting white churches4 ,it should be allowed1 and must be allowed1 to go there and organize churches just as it does in ,iowa1 ,dakota1 ,missouri and ,kansas1 saying nothing at all about the race question or in any way excluding colored people from its membership2 giving them that freedom which is theirs1 to come in1 and the freedom also to stay out1 and to have their own churches1 and their own social circles1 just as they please4 ,any one who undertakes to force such things out of their natural and proper course will only work confusion and loss4 ,,no ,,trouble ,,need ,,be ,,borrowed4 ,,editorial ,,in ,,congregationalist ,as for the matter of the entrance of the ,home ,missionary ,society upon work in the ,south1 that may be trusted to take care of itself4 ,the two societies mutually have agreed upon a policy of comity and consultation4 ,unless there be a real and imperative demand for its services at the ,south1 the ,home ,missionary ,society probably will find all that it can do in its present field4 ,if such a demand arise1 the ,society will do its best to meet it1 not in rivalry of1 but in co-operation with1 the ,missionary ,association4 ,there may be localities where the former can work in the same line to better advantage than the latter4 ,nobody need borrow trouble on their account1 for both are pledged1 and honestly1 we are sure1 to keep out of each other's way when necessary1 and together to erase 8the color line0 as fast as possible4 ,,criticisms ,,noted4 ,,editorial ,,in ,,advance4 ,we fear that many of those who are criticising the policy of the society 7,a4 ,h4 ,m4 ,s471 in pushing its work in the ,south1 know little or nothing either of the ,new ,west or of the ,south4 ,we call the attention of ,dr4 ,bacon1 and the minority which he represents1 to a few facts4 ,in the first place1 the ,american ,missionary ,association cannot reach the white people of the ,south4 ,in proof of this we appeal to agents of that society1 who are in the field--,dr4 ,roy and the missionaries down ,south4 ,one of the missionaries has just been in this office and gave his testimony most freely1 while we were reading the proof of ,dr4 ,bacon's article4 ,he said3 8,i have been three years in ,alabama4 ,i am pastor of a colored church there4 ,we are prosperous4 ,we were never more so4 ,the ,southern people are coming more and more to labor with us1 and to co-operate with us in every way for the education of the negro4 ,but there must be a colored church for colored people1 and a white church for white people1 and this will be done without saying anything about it4 ,both races prefer it1 and it is a natural method4 ,our society cannot reach the white people1 we ought not to attempt to do so40 99 99 99 ,there is a call for the work of the ,american ,home ,missionary ,society in the ,south4 ,to refuse to go there would be wicked4 ,that society has just as much right to build a church in ,mississippi or ,georgia1 and to give it aid1 as it has to aid a church in ,iowa or ,dakota4 ,no other society has a right to bid it keep north of ,mason and ,dixon's line4 ,,who ,,shall ,,work ,,at ,,the ,,south8 ,,by ,,rev4 ,j4 ,e4 ,,roy1 ,d4,d4 ,to the ,editor of the ,advance3 ,in your response to ,dr4 ,bacon on this question1 you said3 ,we appeal to ,dr4 ,roy4 ,i did relation to the colored1 ,i wish to disavow it1 for ,i never held that view1 never expressed it4 ,i think that the ,a4 ,m4 ,a4 could do that work if the constituency shall so direct1 though1 as our these about #ij were present1 and many seemed deeply interested4 ,at the close quite a number rose for prayers and remained for personal conversation4 ,after the meeting that night1 which was also quite full1 the same girls remained1 and several expressed the hope that they had given their hearts to ,jesus4 ,some of them had been very thoughtful for weeks1 and seemed to need just the help that these meetings gave to bring them to a decision4 ,a meeting of the boys was also held4 ,the girls begged me to keep on with meetings for them1 which ,i have very gladly done every ,monday after school1 from twenty to thirty-five coming in4 ,nine or ten of them hope they have become ,christians4 ,several of them wish to unite with the church at once4 ,they were examined and their friends consulted1 and three were propounded for admission1 but will not be received until they have had a little time to test their sincerity4 ,influences have been brought to bear to draw them away from us4 ,they have been told that there is no religion where everything is so quiet1 and endeavors have been made to get them into revival meetings which are wild with excitement4 ,last week some of our teachers went into one of these meetings1 where several girls were rolling on the floor1 crying and moaning4 ,one lady thought she saw one of her scholars among them1 and going to her held out her hand and told her to get up4 ,she obeyed at once1 and her teacher led her to a seat1 where she talked to her quietly a few moments1 telling her that ,god did not require any such thing as that of her or any one else1 that her good conduct in school and elsewhere lately was stronger evidence that she had given her heart to ,jesus than anything she saw there4 ,afterwards she went to another part of faculty1 perhaps ,i should say double faculty1 of comprehending a great cause1 and at the same time of making individual cases all her own4 ,i have heard her talk of the work in the ,south as a work for the ,african race1 until her tongue thrilled with eloquence1 her face shone with a strange light1 and her whole person seemed to expand to the measure of her theme4 ,to her it seemed so strange that people did not see what to her was so plain3 that the churches were so slow to accept their opportunity2 that the very conjuncture of the death of slavery and the opening of the ,african continent by exploration and commerce were a demonstration that they were part and parcel of the same plan and pattern1 and meant the salvation of the ,african race4 ,why could not the churches see it8 ,had blindness happened to the people of ,god8 ,how hot and fast her words fell1 as she pictured the possibilities which lay in the ,southern work1 and as she expressed her amazement at the the facts4 ,like the ideal scientist seeking light from every quarter1 and open to its reception1 come from where it might1 she was ready to follow the truth wherever it might lead4 ,she submitted her
