,,braiding ,,projects ,written and ,illustrated by ,charles ,e4 ,white1 ,jr4 ,for the convenience of craftsmen1 we have assembled in this booklet the directions for many of the popular gimp projects1 with suggestions for a multitude of patterns which can be made with any desired color combination4 ,these directions have been completely illustrated in color1 so that every step can readily be understood1 since the true simplicity of braiding has often been obscured by complicated instructions and illustrations4 ,the material itself is a special coated tape made in various colors and shapes4 ,standard gimp and ,titan lacing are flat and #c_/cb wide4 ,the special wide gimp also is flat4 ,round or cord gimp is available in either #c_/fd or #e_/fd diameters4 ,these various types of gimp can be purchased by the yard1 though they are much less expensive when secured by the spool4 ,leather lacings may be used in place of gimp where particular effects are desired4 ,general ,directions ,standard and wide gimps have a seam on one face4 ,always start braiding with this seam next to the core and be careful at the edge of the braid to fold each strand so that the seam remains inside or on the back of the work4 ,titan lacing is seamless1 and therefore can be used with either surface on the outside of the braid4 ,a well-made article1 however1 should have no twisted strands1 whether made of standard gimp1 or of seamless ,titan lacing4 ,in all work with gimp it is essential to keep all the strands pulled tight1 and to adjust every row of stitches1 in order to ensure that the braid will be uniform4 ,long working strands may be tied in coils to keep them from snarling4 ,if it is necessary to splice a strand1 slice away half the thickness of the gimp on both of the ends to be joined4 ,overlap the two ends and lead them through several stitches1 then trim off the extra material4 7,fig4 #a47 ,if it is necessary to set the braid aside before it is finished1 use ordinary paper clips or knot the strands to keep them in place4 ,steel ,bracelet ,cores ,the type of core most widely used for bracelet making is formed from a strip of spring steel either or wide4 ,make a narrow ,v-shaped slit half the width of the band at about from one end4 7,fig4 #b;,a47 ,mark off beyond this cut the circumference of your bracelet 7usually #h-i inches7 and make another slit half way through from the opposite side4 ,clip off the metal about beyond this second slit4 ,connect the band as shown1 with the ends on the inside of the bracelet4 7,figs4 #c and #d47 ,set the band on a solid surface and pound with a mallet or hammer until the edges fit smoothly4 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #a ,illustration3 ,fig4 #b ,illustration3 ,fig4 #c ,illustration3 ,fig4 #d ,illustration3 ,fellowcrafters ,,gimp ,,braiding ,,projects ,basket-,weave ,bracelets ,illustration3 ,bracelet ,the recently developed basket-weave bracelets are among the easiest and most popular projects for flat gimp4 ,this is in part due to the fact that they offer so many possibilities for originality of design4 ,the standard gimp types1 for instance1 may be made with from one to seven colors1 so it is possible to match them with any color schemes of belts or leashes1 or to make them harmonize with any costume4 ,wide ,gimp ,basket-,weave ,bracelet ,materials required3 #c strands of wide gimp1 #ab each #a strand of wide gimp1 #fj steel bracelet core ,fasten the ends of the short strands to the band with a paper clip in the position shown in figure #e4 ,leaving one half inch or so free at the start1 weave the long strand under one--over one--under one4 7,fig4 #f47 ,bring it around through the band and weave the next row of stitches over one--under on--over one4 7,fig4 #g47 ,pull the strands tight4 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #e ,illustration3 ,fig4 #f ,illustration3 ,fig4 #g ,continue alternating these two steps all the way around the band4 ,if the pattern does not come out even1 rip out the last few stitches and weave them again closer together to gain space for the extra stitch4 ,then remove the paper clip and weave each short strand back loosely through the first two stitches at the beginning4 7,fig4 #h47 ,cut off the beginning end of the weaving strand at the edge of the bracelet4 7,fig4 #i47 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #h ,illustration3 ,fig4 #i ,finish off by braiding along the start of the weaving strand 7,fig4 #aj71 around the outside of the band4 ,this makes the last weaving row under one--over one--under one4 ,pull all the ends tight and clip them off close to the braid4 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #aj ,the pattern shown above is made with three colors according to the direction illustrations4 ,checkerboard patterns are made by using one color on the band and a second color for weaving4 ,four more two-color patterns are made by placing the lighter color at the center of the band or at the edge1 and by using a dark or a light weaving strand4 ,three-color patterns have six additional possibilities for variation on the same principle4 ,illustration3 ,additional patterns ,illustration3 ,additional patterns ,standard ,gimp ,basket-,weave ,bracelet ,materials any of the ways shown below1 bringing the strand through the center after each row4 7,fig4 #ac47 ,several two-color combinations of these stitches are suggested here1 but do not let these limit your originality1 as there are very many possible patterns4 ,finish off the bracelet as described on page #b4 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #ab ,illustration3 ,fig4 #ac ,wood ,core ,basket-,weave ,bracelet ,materials required3 #e strands of standard gimp1 #ab each #a strand of standard gimp1 #e yds4 #a standard wood core ,made in exactly the same way as the preceding4 ,the beginning strands may be tied in place or fastened with adhesive tape4 ,additional ,projects ,the directions already given apply equally well to all of the following projects4 ,six-strand standard gimp bracelets are made like five-strand bracelets with an additional #ab strand on the core4 ,wood core napkin rings like that shown above require three1 four1 or five #h core strands and a #c yd4 weaving strand4 ,napkin rings made on shortened bands 7#f between the notches7 require either five or six #h standard gimp core strands and a #b yd4 weaving strand4 ,narrow band bracelets of the type shown at the top of the page can be made of standard gimp with three or four #ab core strands and a #b yd4 weaving strand4 ,narrow band napkin rings require three or four #h core strands and a #a yd4 weaving strand4 ,illustration3 ,two-color combinations ,leashes and ,lanyards ,illustration3 ,leash ,standard ,dog ,leash ,materials required3 #d strands of standard gimp1 #c yds4 each #a strand of core material1 #a yd4 #cj #a standard or ,french leash snap soft wire for binding1 #e ,the stout core necessary for a dog leash may be made of standard core braid or of extra heavy twine4 ,fold one end back to make a loop #g long4 ,bind the end with wire4 ,put the other end through the eye of the snap1 then bend it back and bind it with wire to make a loop #a long4 7,fig4 #ad47 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #ad ,tie the center of the strands to the center of the core with one end of a piece of cord4 ,tie the other end of the cord to any firm object so that you can keep the leash pulled tight while you are braiding4 ,arrange the strands as in figure #ae4 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #ae ,braid toward one end as follows3 ,bring the upper right strand around the back1 forward between the left strands1 and across the core to lie parallel to the other right strand4 ,in successive steps1 merely take the uppermost strand--left or right as the case may be--around the back1 between the strands of the opposite side1 and across the front4 ,keep the stitches pushed tightly together to achieve a uniform result4 7,figs4 #af and #ag47 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #af ,illustration3 ,fig4 #ag ,continue around the loop until you come back to the main braid4 ,then make a square as follows3 ,holding the braid as in figure #ah1 cross the two rear strands4 7,fig4 #ai47 ,bring the rear right strand down over the forward right strand4 7,fig4 #bj47 ,loop the latter over the first strand and bring it down between the other two strands4 7,fig4 #ba47 ,loop the third strand similarly over all the strands and bring it down in back4 7,fig4 #bb47 ,bring the fourth strand over the third and through the loop of the first4 7,fig4 #bc47 ,pull the strands tight 7,fig4 #bd7 so that the top appears as a square4 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #ah ,illustration3 ,fig4 #ai ,illustration3 ,fig4 #bj ,illustration3 ,fig4 #ba ,illustration3 ,fig4 #bb ,illustration3 ,fig4 #bc ,illustration3 ,fig4 #bd ,then make a square braid4 ,fold one strand back on itself4 7,fig4 #be47 ,fold the next strand 7,fig4 #bf7 back on itself over the first one4 ,fold the third strand over the second4 7,fig4 #bg47 ,fold the last strand over the third and through the loop of the first4 7,fig4 #bh47 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #be ,illustration3 ,fig4 #bf ,illustration3 ,fig4 #bg ,illustration3 ,fig4 #bh ,complete the stitch by drawing all the strands tight4 ,continue making squares in this way until the strands are only about #b long4 ,the spiral braiding described on page #f may be used in place of this square braiding or in combination with it4 ,end the braid with a lock knot by looping each strand under the loose end of the overlying strand and through the top stitch as shown in figures #bi-cb4 ,pull the ends tight1 making certain as you do so that none of the strands appear twisted4 ,then clip off the ends of the strands4 7,fig4 #cc47 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #bi ,illustration3 ,fig4 #cj ,illustration3 ,fig4 #ca ,illustration3 ,fig4 #cb ,illustration3 ,fig4 #cc ,follow the same steps in making the other half of the leash4 ,suggested ,variations ,spiral braiding may be substituted after the first square4 ,this is made in exactly the same way as square braiding except that each strand is bent over the top of the braid on the opposite side of the core1 rather than back along itself4 7,figs4 #cd-ch47 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #cd ,illustration3 ,fig4 #ce ,illustration3 ,fig4 #cf ,illustration3 ,fig4 #cg ,illustration3 ,fig4 #ch ,after completing the loops at the ends1 many craftsmen prefer to make several more ordinary stitches before starting the squares4 ,six-,strand ,leash ,materials required3 #f strands of standard gimp4 #c yds4 each #a strand of core braid1 #a yd4 #cj #a standard or ,french snap ,six-strand round braiding can also be used for leashes4 ,it is made in much the same way1 except that the top strand is brought around the back1 then forward below the first strand1 over the second strand1 and under the third strand4 7,fig4 #ci47 ,when in doubt about the order of the strands1 remember to weave the top strand so that it passes over the front strand on the opposite side4 ,you can see this clearly in figure #ci4 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #ci ,when making the square braiding1 lay an opposite pair of strands along the core and weave the remaining four as described above4 ,the strands on the core may be clipped with the others after making the lock knot4 ,illustration3 ,leash ,standard ,lanyard ,illustration3 ,lanyard ,materials required3 #b strands of standard gimp1 #c yds4 each #a snap ,lanyards are made in much the same way as leashes1 but without the core4 ,the snap is fastened securely so that the work can be pulled against it4 ,then both strands are run half way through the ring to give four equal braiding strands4 ,cross the strands on the ring in exactly the way shown in figure #dj4 ,this arrangement corresponds to the starting position of the leash4 ,the braiding is done in the same way as that described for the leash1 beginning with the upper right strand4 7,fig4 #af47 ,when only one foot of lacing is left1 form the loop of the lanyard by folding the braid back as in figure #da4 ,cross the two lower strands behind the main braid 7,fig4 #db71 and finish with the square or spiral braid and the lock knot as described for the leash4 ,if you wish the square braid to slip along the lanyard1 braid it loosely4 ,the alternative pattern shown is made by arranging the strands at the start as in figure #dc4 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #dj ,illustration3 ,fig4 #da ,illustration3 ,fig4 #db ,illustration3 ,fig4 #dc ,six-,strand ,lanyard ,materials required3 #c strands of small round gimp1 #c yds4 each #a snap ,this is made in the same way as the six-strand leash by starting as follows3 ,the rear left strand is brought around its forward part and bent to the right4 7,fig4 #dd47 ,both parts of the middle strand are brought to the right4 7,fig4 #de47 ,the forward part of the right strand is woven to the left over one--under one--over one1 and the rear part of the same strand is woven over two--under one4 ,start braiding with the upper right strand4 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #dd ,illustration3 ,fig4 #de ,other ,types of ,leashes and ,lanyards ,unusual and very attractive results can be obtained by utilizing round gimp in making these projects4 ,leashes and lanyards1 for instance1 of either the six- or four-strand type are very smart when made with small round gimp4 ,the larger cord gimp is suitable for four- or six-strand leashes and for four-strand lanyards4 ,some of these possibilities are illustrated on this page4 ,the amount of material required is the same as for the standard gimp projects and the method of working is identical4 ,it is advisable1 however1 to use picture wire as a core for the leashes4 ,when making articles of large round gimp1 it will also be found more satisfactory to use spiral braiding in place of the square braiding4 ,heavy leashes for large dogs can be made of wide gimp braided over a stout rope core4 ,braided ,bracelets ,illustration3 ,bracelets ,these illustrated bracelets need no introduction1 since they are standard as braiding projects4 ,they are ordinarily made with from one to four colors1 but can be made with as many as eight colors1 so there is a wide range of possibilities for bright patterns4 ,the braid itself is an eight strand variation of the braiding used for leashes and lanyards4 ,standard ,flat-,weave ,bracelet ,materials required3 #d strands of standard gimp1 #b yds4 each #a steel band1 wide ,hold the center of all four strands against the inside of the band about beyond the joint4 7,fig4 #df47 ,if standard gimp is used1 be sure to have the seams next to the metal4 ,fold the strands on the left diagonally down across the band1 holding them with the thumb and forefinger of the left hand4 7,fig4 #dg47 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #df ,illustration3 ,fig4 #dg ,weave the top right strand across the band under the first1 over the second1 under the third1 and over the fourth strands4 7,fig4 #dh47 ,weave the next strand over the first1 under the second1 over the third1 and under the fourth strands4 7,fig4 #di47 ,weave the third strand under one--over one--under one--over one1 and weave the last strand under two--over one--under one4 ,make certain that none of the strands are twisted1 then tighten the braid on the band until the gimp lies flat without bulging4 7,fig4 #ej47 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #dh ,illustration3 ,fig4 #di ,illustration3 ,fig4 #ej ,pass the top right strand through the bracelet4 ,bring it forward between the two middle strands at the left4 ,then fold it back across the band over the third strand and under the fourth4 7,fig4 #ea47 ,pull it tight4 ,next do the same with the upper left strand 7,fig4 #eb71 and continue alternately weaving the top left and right strands in this way4 ,the last strand woven shows as the lowest on the inside1 so you can always tell which strand to weave next4 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #ea ,illustration3 ,fig4 #eb ,if the pattern does not come out even when you have woven the entire distance around the bracelet1 ease the braid back around the band to gain whatever additional space you need in order to complete the design4 ,clip the ends of the strands to make them pointed4 ,then weave the lower right strand under the beginning strand on the same side4 7,fig4 #ec47 ,weave the lower left strand over the first and under the second beginning strands on the left4 7,fig4 #ed47 ,then weave the free strand on the left over one--under one1 thus completing the face of the braid with all the strands woven to the edge4 7,fig4 #ee47 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #ec ,illustration3 ,fig4 #ed ,illustration3 ,fig4 #ee ,to finish off1 work inside the bracelet4 ,weave the upper left strand under the first two slanting strands on the right4 7,fig4 #ef47 ,weave the upper right strand under the two opposite strands4 7,fig4 #eg47 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #ef ,illustration3 ,fig4 #eg ,weave the rest of the strands in the same way 7,fig4 #eh71 then draw the work tight and trim off the ends4 ,many additional patterns can be made by varying the position of the strands at the start4 ,the strands may simply be crossed on the inside 7,fig4 #ei71 to make one series of patterns4 ,they may be looped to bring both ends of the same strand on the same side for another group of patterns4 ,titan lacing may be looped flat as in figure #fj1 but standard gimp should have the strands arranged as in figure #fa so that the seam sides will be toward the band4 ,combinations of straight1 crossed1 and looped strands offer further possibilities for patterns4 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #eh ,illustration3 ,fig4 #ei ,illustration3 ,fig4 #fj ,eight separate strands #d ft4 long may be started as shown in figure #fb4 ,an ordinary paper clip is sufficient to hold the braid in place4 ,weaving with eight strands extends the possibilities for unusual patterns1 but care must be exercised to keep the designs simple4 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #fa ,illustration3 ,fig4 #fb ,wood-,core ,flat-,weave ,bracelet ,materials required3 #d strands of standard gimp1 #b yds4 each #a standard wood core ,the stunning bracelets of the type shown here are made in exactly the same way as the standard bracelets4 ,narrow ,flat-,weave ,bracelet ,materials required3 #d strands of standard gimp1 #a yds4 each #a steel band1 wide ,these1 also1 are made in the same way as the standard bracelets1 offering the same opportunities for patterns4 ,six-,strand ,flat-,weave ,bracelets ,the preceding bracelets can be made equally well with three long strands instead of four4 ,the only difference in the braiding is that the strand which is carried around the back should be brought forward between the first two strands and woven across the band over one--under one4 7,fig4 #fc 47 ,the lengths of the strands required are as follows3 ,wide-band bracelet--#c strands1 #b yds4 each ,narrow-band bracelet--#c strands1 #a yds4 each ,wood-core bracelet--#c strands1 #b yds4 each ,illustration3 ,fig4 #fc ,napkin ,rings ,any of the above can be made as napkin rings4 ,if the core used is #f in circumference 7in metal bands1 #f between the notches71 use three-fourths as much material as is required for the corresponding bracelet4 ,illustration3 ,rings ,round ,gimp ,bracelets ,illustration3 ,bracelets ,these bracelets are typical of the colorful possibilities of the new round gimp4 ,both are made entirely of gimp without any special accessories1 and require very little time for the braiding4 ,square-,knotted ,bracelet ,materials required3 #b strands of small cord gimp1 #a yds4 each #a strand of wide gimp1 #ah ,make a double coil of wide gimp of whatever diameter is desired4 ,cut both ends on the same slant1 so that there will always be only two thicknesses of material in the finished core4 7,fig4 #fd47 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #fd ,tie the two strands of cord gimp together at one end1 leaving about #a beyond the knot to use later for finishing4 ,place the knot at the left side of the core4 ,select the color which is to show on the band and lead it across the outside of the core4 7,fig4 #fe47 ,lead the other strand through the core1 cross it over the top strand 7,fig4 #ff71 lead it back under the core and up through the loop at the left side4 7,fig4 #fg47 ,this process makes half a square knot4 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #fe ,illustration3 ,fig4 #ff ,illustration3 ,fig4 #fg ,in all succeeding knots1 merely choose the color which is to show on the band and lead it across in front4 7,fig4 #fh47 ,then loop the other strand over it1 around the back1 and forward through the loop on the opposite side4 7,fig4 #fi47 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #fh ,illustration3 ,fig4 #fi ,when you have gone completely around the bracelet1 untie the starting knot and tuck in the loose ends4 ,all the patterns shown above are made in exactly this way4 ,the core may either be of the same color as one of the working strands1 or of a third color to add little decorative touches between the stitches4 ,spiral ,bracelet ,materials required3 #b strands of heavy round gimp1 #b yds4 each #a strand of heavy round gimp1 #aj ,cross the strands at their midpoints4 7,fig4 #gj47 ,bring the right under strand around over the next two strands and down behind4 7,fig4 #ga47 ,do the same with the second strand4 7,fig4 #gb47 ,bring the third strand around and down through the loop of the first4 7,fig4 #gc47 ,bring the last strand around and down through both the first and second loops4 7,fig4 #gd47 ,insert the core through the middle so that about #a is beyond the knot4 ,then pull all the strands tight4 7,fig4 #ge47 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #gj ,illustration3 ,fig4 #ga ,illustration3 ,fig4 #gb ,illustration3 ,fig4 #gc ,illustration3 ,fig4 #gd ,illustration3 ,fig4 #ge ,continue braiding for about #h in this same way4 ,then fit the braid around your wrist to find the bracelet size needed4 ,cut the long end of the core so that it just touches the beginning of the braid4 7,fig4 #gf47 ,overlap the two ends of the core1 and complete the braid over the doubled strand4 ,tuck the loose ends through the beginning stitches and trim them off close to the braid4 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #gf ,braided ,belts ,belts to match bracelets and leashes or to harmonize with various costumes are favorite gimp projects4 ,they may be made from any type of gimp4 ,the popular twelve-strand braids can have as many as six colors1 if so desired4 ,the choice of the buckle is quite important4 ,standard buckles with tongues are the most widely used4 ,special decorative effects can be achieved with tongueless buckles4 ,other attractive results can be produced by covering the buckle with gimp1 using half hitches 7,fig4 #gg7 or basket stitches as shown in figure #gh4 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #gg ,illustration3 ,fig4 #gh #ab-,strand ,belt ,materials required3 #f strands of standard gimp or ,titan lacing1 #c yds4 each #c strands of standard gimp or ,titan lacing1 #f each #a buckle for or #a belt width ,fasten the buckle securely so that you can pull against it to keep the braiding tight4 ,hang three strands of gimp on each side of the tongue1 so that you have twelve strands of equal length4 ,since the order of the strands determines the pattern1 arrange the strands on the buckle as indicated for any of the patterns on page #aa4 ,bring the back part of the left strand forward and bend it across the other section of the same strand right side up4 7,fig4 #gi47 ,bring the lower part of the second strand forward and weave it over the front portion and under the forward part of the left strand4 7,fig4 #hj47 ,in the same way bring each strand around to the front and weave it to the left over one--under one--over one--etc4 ,when the work appears as in figure #ha1 check the strands to see that they are all right side up before beginning to braid4 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #gi ,illustration3 ,fig4 #hj ,illustration3 ,fig4 #ha ,take the upper right strand and weave it across over one--under one--etc4 7,fig4 #hb47 ,then weave the upper left strand under one--over one--under one--etc4 7,fig4 #hc7 ,bend the strands at the edge as in figure #hd4 ,if ,titan lacing is used1 the strands may be folded at the edge instead as in figure #he4 ,continue weaving the right and left strands in this way4 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #hb ,illustration3 ,fig4 #hc ,illustration3 ,fig4 #hd ,illustration3 ,fig4 #he ,when you have woven the full length you need for the belt1 make the last row from left to right and fasten the strands with a paper clip as shown in figure #hf4 ,turn the belt around and weave each strand loosely back along itself4 7,figs4 #hg and #hh47 ,pull the strands tight1 then trim the ends close to the braid4 ,illustration3 ,fig4 #hf ,illustration3 ,fig4 #hg ,illustration3 ,fig4 #hh ,make the loop of simple three strand braiding sewed at the ends and sewed to the belt #a below the buckle4 ,little need be said of the color patterns shown on page #aa4 ,at one end of each we have indicated the positions of the strands on the buckle4 ,other ,types of ,braided ,belts ,these same directions can be followed for belts with any number of strands looped through a buckle4 ,one of the most effective of these variations can be made with wide gimp4 ,this belt1 as made ten strands wide and a yard long calls for a #a buckle and five weaving strands1 #c yds4 each4 ,illustration3 ,additional belt patterns ,materials and ,supplies ,although there are several qualities of gimp lacing on the market1 only the highest grade is fit for use in craft work4 ,the gimp we carry is made to order under our own strict specifications4 ,it is
