,,son4 ,illustration ,charles ,dwight was the son of a ,christian missionary1 and was born in ,constantinople1 ,february #afth1 #ahcg4 ,when he was only four months old1 he lost his mother by the plague4 ,she was a good mother1 and desired above all things for her children that they might become the disciples of ,christ4 ,charles1 though a pleasant child1 needed a new heart1 as all children do1 however lovely they may be4 ,while yet young1 he was made to feel this4 ,when he was about seven years old a child of a mission family died4 ,this led him to think of death4 ,a sermon which he now heard made him pray very much for his sins to be forgiven4 ,the ,holy ,spirit was striving with him4 ,he soon yielded to ,his power1 and put his trust in the ,saviour4 ,he now entered upon a new life4 ,prayer was his delight4 ,the ,bible was a precious book4 ,he aimed to do right and to make everybody happy4 ,charles's companions could not help loving him1 for he was always kind in his ways4 ,some of these1 like himself1 were pious youths4 ,they never came together to spend any time in each other's society without praying before they parted4 ,as one of these loved friends was about to leave on one occasion1 ,charles said1 8,let us not part till we have prayed together20 so they went into a room by themselves1 and he read a chapter in the ,bible1 and they knelt down and prayed4 ,that very night--it was ,saturday1 ,february #eth1 #ahec--;he was seized with a headache4 ,the most skilful aid was called in1 but it could not help him4 ,his pains at times were very great1 but he never lost his patience1 nor his sweet hope in ,god4 ,a part of the time his mind wandered1 and then he kept talking1 now in ,english1 now in ,greek1 now in ,french1 now in ,turkish1--but it was about ,christ and his cause4 ,once1 when a dear friend who was siting by him asked him if he felt ready for whatever might be the result of his sickness1 he said1 8,my head is in such pain that ,i cannot collect my thoughts2 but sometimes ,i am able to do so1 and then my mind is in perfect peace4 ,but if ,i had not been led to make my peace with ,god before this disease came upon me1 ,i am sure ,i never could have done it now40 ,at another time1 in reply to a question from his father1 he said with great feeling1 8,i cannot yet say that ,i want to die now2 but ,i desire the will of the ,lord to be done4 ,if ,he wills that ,i die now1 ,i am ready40 ,but why1 do you suppose1 did he not want to die then8 ,it was not because it is so happy to live4 ,his life was indeed a happy one1 but he knew it is far better to be with ,christ4 ,the reason why he seems to have wished to live rather than to die1 was1 that he might do good4 ,his heart was set on being a missionary4 ,he hoped soon to visit his father's country for his education1 and then to return1 and preach the gospel4 ,it was this that seemed to him even more desirable than to go at once and be with ,christ4 ,prayer was very sweet to him4 ,once1 after his father had prayed with him1 he said1 8,it is such a comfort to have you pray with me60 ,he also prayed himself4 ,he asked of ,god that all the members of the church might 8lead holy lives10 and that those who are in their sins1 and the children1 might be converted4 ,he ended as follows3--8,o ,lord1 thou knowest how much greater than our words are our desires and necessities2 and do thou hear us and bless us as thou seest we need1 for the sake of ,jesus ,christ1 to whom be glory for ever4 ,amen40 ,he also found great comfort in the ,bible4 ,as his father repeated passages to him1 such as 8,in my ,father's house are many mansions10 8,this is a faithful saying1 and worthy of all acceptation1 that ,christ ,jesus came into the world to save sinners10 he would say1 8,oh1 how sweet6 how precious60 ,for twelve days he had been getting worse1 and it was now plain that the conflict was nearly over4 ,a little before the end1 his father bent over him1 and said1 8,charles1 can you now commit your soul into the hands of ,christ1 as your gracious ,saviour80 ,he replied1 slowly1 and with deep feeling1 8,i have done that long ago1 papa40 ,his father1 having heard these sweet words1 threw himself on a sofa1 and being very tired1 quickly fell asleep4 ,a loud call from a servant soon awoke him4 ,he sprang to the bed1 and found the poor sufferer in great pain1 and in a few minutes his spirit was with ,christ in heaven4 ,would you join him there8 ,then 8commit your soul into the hands of ,christ1 as your ,saviour10 that you too may be able to say1 at the end of life1 8,i have done that long ago40 ,benjamin ,pardon1 ,printer1 ,paternoster ,row4 ,illustration ,god loves the child that humbly prays1 ,and truly seeks his face2 ,that walks in all his holy ways1 ,depending on his grace4 ,god loves the child whose earliest youth ,is given to the ,lord2 ,who fears his name1 and speaks the truth1 ,and trembles at his word4 ,god loves all those who prize his love2 ,and1 till this life be past1 ,will shine upon them from above1 ,and save them to the last4 ,o heavenly ,father6 shine on me1 ,and all my heart unite ,to love1 and serve1 and honour thee1 ,and make thee my delight4
